Netzach (נצח) — Endurance / Victory
Core definition
Netzach is the seventh of the ten sefiros: the attribute of endurance, persistence, and victory — the power that holds fast against opposition and never changes course. It forms a pair with Hod (הוד, splendor/acknowledgment), the eighth sefirah; together Netzach and Hod stand as "l'var migufa" — outside the body proper, i.e., beneath the sefiros of intellect (ChaBaD) and emotion (ChaGaS) — yet their root reaches higher than the middos and even higher than the mochin [15966/maamar_027 :: §15].
The maamarim ground this in the verse "v'gam Netzach Yisrael lo yeshaker v'lo yinachem — ki lo adam hu l'hinachem" (Shmuel I 15:29): Netzach's root is "ki lo adam" — not "man" (i.e., not sechel and middos, which can change), but pnimiyus haKeter, the inner dimension of the crown, the simple essential ratzon (will) that has no cause and therefore never changes, like a father's will for his son, which flows from his Awtsmoos rather than from any reason [31640/maamar_021 :: §324, §328].
How the Rebbeim develop it
The corpus treats Netzach above all as the defining avodah of the present galut. Edom and Yishmael — the nations dominating this exile — are identified as Netzach and Hod d'kelipah; correspondingly, "this galut's avodah = Netzach/Hod specifically" [31640/maamar_021 :: §116, §118]. In the Beis HaMikdash era, Yisrael stood "panim b'panim" — bitul pnimi through seeing Divinity — but in galut there is hester panim, so the avodah becomes middat hanitzuach: standing strong in Torah and mitzvos without inner feeling or inspiration [31640/maamar_021 :: Summary p. קנב].
Netzach is "a strong peg" that does not move [31640/maamar_021 :: §983]. Unlike hasagah, hisbonenus, and even ahavah rabbah and ahavah b'ta'anugim — which need preparation, the fitting time, and heavenly help, and still alternate between katnus and gadlus — the power of nitzuach is equal at every hour, because it is not composed in anything: "the composite changes; the non-composite does not." Its root in the essence of the soul means it draws out the essence's own revelation [15966/maamar_027 :: §54].
Because Netzach is rooted in the essence, it opens the upper "treasuries": the verse "l'cha Havayah haNetzach" is read as Israel's arousal below opening the otzrot above — the "otzar shel yiras shamayim," the "stimin d'chol stimin" — and "motza ru'ach me'otzrotav" as the striking of Keter d'kelipah through the power of Netzach [15966/maamar_027 :: Overview]. Amalek is the counterforce: "koach hanitzachon d'le'umat zeh" — but kedushah's Netzach, being an essential power, breaks it, and Amalek has no lasting kiyum [31640/maamar_021 :: Overview].
Key distinctions
Netzach vs. Hod. Though paired, they differ in their mode of avodah. The maamarim map the two forms of prostration onto them: hishtachava'ah (full prostration — understanding, bitul pnimi, itkafya and ithapcha) is in Netzach, while keri'ah (kneeling — toiling in tefillah without full grasp, "knowing the truth" and accepting it) is in Hod [31640/maamar_021 :: Summary p. קנב]. Hod's own two levels are the two kinds of hoda'ah (acknowledgment): hoda'ah per taam v'da'as, and hoda'ah of "knowing nothing, only modeh" — rooted in the soul's Awtsmoos, parallel to the simple emunah of every Jew; this bitul d'hoda'ah is greater than the sechel's bitul [15966/maamar_027 :: Overview].
Netzach as anaf ChaBaD. One maamar notes a tentative identification — Netzach as "anaf ChaBaD" (an offshoot of the intellect, through re'i'ah) — but flags it "tzarich iyun," a question requiring further study [31640/maamar_021 :: Summary p. קנב]. The dominant, settled teaching is the Keter-root described above.
The two ratzons. Pnimiyus haKeter carries two levels of will: ratzon murkav (composite — with a cause, and therefore changeable) and ratzon atzmi (essential — with no cause, never changing). Netzach's root is the second [31640/maamar_021 :: Summary p. קנד].

- Hod — Netzach's pair; the power of hoda'ah (acknowledgment), rooted likewise in pnimiyus haKeter.
- Keser (crown) — Netzach/Hod's root in its pnimiyus, "ki lo adam."
- Mesirus nefesh — the essence-power Netzach draws out; the simple people's mesirus nefesh is more revealed than the ba'alei mochin's, which is why "this galut's avodah" requires laying sechel aside and conducting oneself with Netzach and hoda'ah [15966/maamar_027 :: §144].
- Galut — the historical setting of Netzach's avodah; the last galut's work against Netzach/Hod d'kelipah draws the future giluy of pnimiyus haKeter and pnimiyus haTorah [31640/maamar_021 :: Overview].
