Hod (הוד) — Splendor / Acknowledgment
Core definition
Hod is the eighth of the ten sefiros, paired with Netzach and standing directly above Yesod. Together the three form the lower triad NeH"Y (Netzach, Hod, Yesod), the third of the three vessel-groups — ChaBa"D (the intellect), ChaGa"T (the emotions), NeH"Y (the implements of action) [15911/maamar_002 :: עב׳ 106]. Its Hebrew name carries two senses held together in one sefirah: hod as splendor, radiance, majesty ("הוד והדר" — majesty and splendor), and hod as hoda'ah, acknowledgment — the admission of truth by one who cannot grasp it [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 66, 90].
How the Rebbeim develop it
The diagonal: Hod as Gevurah's branch. The maamar "מחר חדש" (תרס"ג) explains the inclusion (התכללות) of the middos through the "diagonal" (אלכסון): Netzach is Chesed's branch and Hod is Gevurah's branch [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 147–148]. This pairing answers a practical problem: when a person's intellect fails to reach proper contemplation — when he cannot birth true love and awe from his own understanding — then Netzach and Hod are needed. They operate even where "there is no great light and vitality" in them; service continues by endurance and acknowledgment rather than by illumination [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 147–148].
Acknowledgment as bitul. The core of Hod is hoda'ah: "We acknowledge to You that You are Havayah our Elokim" — מודים אנחנו לך שאתה הוא ה׳ אלקינו — said although we do not grasp how Havayah is Elokim; we acknowledge that the truth is so [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 90–91]. This is compared to one who admits to his fellow that the matter is true even though he cannot grasp it as his fellow does. Such acknowledgment "is the nullification of his essence": he nullifies himself, laying aside his intellect and desires — which take little place by him — so that he can feel and admit the truth though he does not understand [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 94–98]. The one whose intellect occupies him cannot do this: when he does not understand, "the force of his intellect's feeling" blocks even the feeling of truth, and all the more so its acknowledgment [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 97]. Hence: only one nullified in essence can say "מודים אנחנו" [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 100].
From acknowledgment to love. Hod's root-position is that "Hod is Gevurah's branch — and awe's: the aspect of bitul" [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 102–103]. But the inclusion runs both ways: sometimes Hod receives from Chesed — and then acknowledgment gives birth to love, as in the Shema: after one acknowledges the truth that "Havayah is one," he is aroused in love, wanting to be included in His unity, or that His unity be revealed below — and the same fire carries the mitzvos with force and self-sacrifice [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 104]. Thus "Hod is included of love and Tiferet" [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 105]: the cold bitul of acknowledgment is included with warmth.
Hod as revelation of light. In the same discourse, "הוד והדר" (majesty and splendor) is read as "the aspect of the light's revelation": Hod receives from Chesed as the splendor that shines forth [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 66]. Yesod, below it, receives from Netzach and Hod — "כליות יועצות" (the kidneys counsel) — joining heaven and earth, sovev and memaleh [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 113–115].
Higher Hod: the festivals. Hod also functions above: the generality of the festivals is the drawing-down of the mochin of Imma — within them, the Netzach-Hod-Yesod of Abba — i.e., the aspect of the Ohr Ein Sof, supernal holiness, into the weekdays [15911/maamar_007 :: Summary]. And the rooster below traces its root upward through angel Gavriel in Beriah to its root's root — Hod of Imma — a chain of hishtalshelus, level after level, from Hod of Imma to the rooster's crow [15911/maamar_004 :: Summary (phrases 115–155)].
Key distinctions
- Netzach vs. Hod: Netzach, Chesed's branch, receives from Gevurah — victory, "with the left repels," coercing the opposing sitra achra, mainly in "turn from evil"; Hod, Gevurah's branch, receives from Chesed — acknowledgment, which carries "some vitality" and serves "do good" more than victory alone [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 106–112]. From victory itself, vitality is made; from acknowledgment, love can be born.
- Acknowledgment vs. comprehension: comprehension is measured by grasp; acknowledgment begins precisely where grasp ends. Its precondition is bitul — the intellect not taking up place — not intellectual attainment [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 94–100].
- Two receivers, one Hod: Hod is Gevurah's branch by root (awe, bitul) and sometimes Chesed's receiver (love, "שמע ישראל"), included of both love and Tiferet [15911/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 102–105].
- Hod vs. "Havayah's splendor": elsewhere the corpus speaks of the heart's joy in Havayah's splendor (יוקר דמלכא) as Tiferet's contemplation — a different matter from the sefirah Hod itself [31642/maamar_019 :: Intro §(3)].
