Malchus as Leadership (מלכות) — Divine Rule
Core definition
Malchus (kingship) is the sefirah of divine leadership — the way He rules and conducts the worlds. The corpus stresses that Malchus is not only majesty but hanhagah: "ba'asher devar melech shilton — the king leads through speech and command," obeyed not through intellect but through kabbalas ol [31621/maamar_010 :: Summary p. נז–נט]. Malchus is "the word of Havayah" — "the world of speech" (all speech is to another): "when the king's word is ruling" [58836/maamar_001 :: Overview].
How the Rebbeim develop it
No king without a people. "There is no king without a people." The middos above are essential — chesed before emanation was "abundant chesed," revelation in itself, not yet to another. But Malchus is a name, and a name is for another. Yet "He and His name alone were" before creation — essential exaltedness: He is a king in essence ("who ruled before every creature was created") — though from essential exaltedness there is no influence, only complete concealment. The worlds come from Malchus: "when it arose in His will: 'I shall rule'" [58836/maamar_001 :: Overview].
Leadership through the people's acceptance. Rosh Hashanah is "the drawing of kingship" — "He was king in Yeshurun": the kesser of Malchus drawn through all the souls of Yisroel uniting in kabbalas ol (in the soul's essence all are one). The desire for kingship is rooted in Kesser Elyon — "Kesser elyon ihu basar malchus" — and "ana emloch" arose in the first thought; but the actual drawing comes "through 'that you make Me King' — Yisroel's total self-enslavement," which is why Rosh Hashanah is Adam haRishon's creation day [58836/maamar_001 :: Overview; 31682/maamar_002 :: Overview].
Two readings of "Yisrael li rosh." "The Holy One is head to Israel, and Israel are head, as it were, for the Holy One." From the hishtalshelut, Ze'ir Anpin precedes (Malchus is only a separate ha'arah, and the giluy in it needs Ze'ir Anpin); from the root, Malchus precedes — "the whole intent is hishavvus hayesh u'bitul hayesh ('dirah b'tachtonim'; 'sof ma'aseh alah b'machshavah techilah')" — and the intent is through Malchus alone. Hence "Israel are, as it were, head for the Holy One": through their avodah a great delight is made above and additional light is drawn in Ze'ir Anpin ("eishes chayil ateres ba'alah") [15962/maamar_018 :: Overview].
Leadership as concealment. Malchus leads precisely by concealing: "the world must be yesh, and yesh comes only through the light's concealment" — from the name Elokim, not Havayah. Malchus is concealment in essence (unlike Ze'ir Anpin, revelation in essence); it is called "sea and land" — the sea its inwardness, concealing Ze'ir Anpin's lights. From this exaltedness-separation comes the parsa between Atzilus and Beriah [58836/maamar_001 :: Overview]. The leader makes room for the led: the yesh's coming-into-being is for the yesh's bitul — "darkness turned to light."
Key distinctions
Essential exaltedness vs. actual rule. "He and His name alone were" — a king in essence before creation — yet with no influence; actual kingship requires the people's kabbalas ol drawing the kesser of Malchus [58836/maamar_001 :: Overview].
Malchus vs. Ze'ir Anpin in leadership. From the chain's perspective Ze'ir Anpin precedes; from the intent's perspective Malchus precedes — the whole purpose (dirah b'tachtonim) is through Malchus alone [15962/maamar_018 :: Overview].
Speech as the instrument of rule. The king leads through speech — command obeyed through kabbalas ol, not intellect. This is why Malchus is the world of dibbur: leadership addresses an other [31621/maamar_010 :: Summary p. נז–נט; 58836/maamar_001 :: Overview].
The ascent before the drawing. Rosh Hashanah's new drawing of will and delight in kingship comes through a raising first — Malchus's ascent to its first root, the Ein Sof's essence — like sleep, like the first tzimtzum: removal, "the light as if it is not" [58836/maamar_001 :: Overview].
