Kabbalas Ol (קבלת עול) — Acceptance of the Yoke

Core definition

Kabbalas ol is the acceptance of the "yoke" — performing Torah and mitzvos as the Supernal will, from nullification (bitul) of one's own wills, rather than from reason, feeling, or delight [15962/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 527–532]. It is the "yoke of mitzvos": "one must do the mitzvos in kabbalas ol, with desire, will, and joy — although he does this because they are the Supernal will, and not for feeling the light's essence in the mitzvos" [15962/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 510–511].

How the Rebbeim develop it

Kabbalas ol of mitzvos comes through kabbalas ol of Heaven's kingdom first. That means "laying aside his essence in general, in complete nullification of his wills" — then, when he does the mitzvah afterward, "he does in kabbalas ol, with vitality and joy" [15962/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 516–518]. Without that prior nullification, the mitzvah is done "without kabbalas ol of mitzvos — he does in the manner of compulsion — it is only as a yoke upon him" [15962/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 519–521]. The yoke accepted with joy ceases to be felt as a burden; the yoke without acceptance is felt as compulsion. Krias Shema is "to do in the land": the acceptance of the yoke of Heaven's kingdom makes the "earth" in which the mitzvos grow [15962/maamar_009 :: chunk summary].

Kabbalas ol of Heaven's kingdom is in the portion of Krias Shema — mesirus nefesh in "One": "in general the portion is kabbalas ol of Heaven's kingdom 'with all your might' — which is nullification above reason and knowledge" [15962/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 524–526]. This is why "fear Elokim" precedes "keep His mitzvos" in Koheles's "the end of the matter, all is heard": first the fear of Elokim (kabbalas ol), then the keeping of the mitzvos (ol mitzvos) — and through this, "this is all of man" — the revelation below [15962/maamar_009 :: chunk summary].

Kabbalas ol changes what the mitzvah draws. One who does the mitzvah in kabbalas ol "does this with vitality and joy, drawing near through this to the mitzvah's essence; he has a belonging to it, drawing through it supernal lights. Whereas when he does the mitzvos coldly, in the manner of 'mitzvos people, learned by rote,' he has no belonging to the mitzvah at all, and draws nothing through it — although he does it" [15962/maamar_009 :: עב׳ 512–515]. The same deed: with kabbalas ol it draws light; without it, nothing.

The paradigm: "whoever is in the aspect of nullification — the taste does not matter to him at all — doing all from the side of accepting the yoke — without investigating after the taste and the delight — even when he has no taste and delight, yet he fulfills and does all as is fitting" [15962/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 527–532]. Kabbalas ol is independent of inner experience; it is doing because He commanded.
