Kapparah (כפרה) — atonement
Core definition
Kapparah ("atonement") is the cleansing and removal of sin. A Shabbos Tazria-Metzora maamar gives its root meaning: "'kaparah' is a term of wiping (kinuach) — that it wipes and purifies the sin." The same maamar unpacks the three meanings of chatas (sin-offering) — cleansing, sin, and deficiency — all present in the korban chatas: the sacrifice wipes away the sin, which stems from the deficiency of the moon, of Malchus — whose ultimate root is the first tzimtzum in the Ohr Ein Sof, "without which sin could not exist" [31695/maamar_019 :: p.קפז].
How the Rebbeim develop it
The atonement comes from the Essence. A Yom Kippur derushah asks why the Torah says "yechaper" without naming who atones — and answers: "for the atonement comes from the Awtsmoos (Essence) of Ein Sof, blessed be He." Teshuvah is the neshama's return to its root and source — doing Torah, mitzvos, tefillah, and good deeds with inner, deep feeling — and the ten teshuvah days each elevate one of the ten soul-powers (three intellectual, seven middos); Yom Kippur is the tenth power's ascent, the shleimus of teshuvah. Hence "yechaper" is stated without a subject: the kapparah flows from Awtsmoos Ein Sof itself. On "mikol chatoseichem lifnei Havayah tiharu": the Gemara (Yoma 85b) — between man and his fellow, Yom Kippur atones only after he appeases him; "ki vayom hazeh yechaper aleichem" covers between man and Elokim [58841/maamar_047 :: Summary].
"Bring an atonement upon Me." The Rosh Chodesh sin-offering is "a sin-offering to Havayah" — and the Gemara's astonishing words: "The Holy One, blessed be He, said: 'Bring an atonement upon Me, for I diminished the moon.'" How can atonement apply Above, when "all atonements and pardons come from Him"? The Mishnah (Shevuos ch. 1) states that the goat of Rosh Chodesh and of the festivals would atone for the defilement of the Sanctuary and its holy things. A reshima reinterprets the kitrug (the moon's complaint): it was a dispute over the direction of avodah — the moon wanted berurim from Above downward, while the divine plan requires them from below upward, "because only ohr chozer returns to its former state." And "bring upon Me an atonement" is read not as an admission that the moon was right, but as the mechanism for removing the chitzonim's grip in the place of refinement — "effected above all by the Rosh Chodesh goat-offering and renewed monthly at the molad, the union of sun and moon" [31695/maamar_019 :: p.קפז; 31695/maamar_007 :: Overview].
Teshuvah as the neshama's return. In the derushah, teshuvah is "not only for aveiros, not only a way out for sinners, but a seder in avodas Hashem even for the sinless" — the neshama's return to its pre-descent purity, "tehorah hi" as in Atzilus. Through doing the Creator's will in the world, the neshama ascends — and the kapparah that purifies "mikol chatoseichem" is drawn from the Essence [58841/maamar_047 :: Overview].
Key distinctions
1. Three meanings of chatas — cleansing, sin, and deficiency: the sacrifice wipes the sin, which stems from Malchus's deficiency (the moon), rooted in the first tzimtzum [31695/maamar_019 :: p.קפז]. 2. Kapparah from Awtsmoos vs. from below — Yom Kippur's atonement comes from the Essence of Ein Sof (hence "yechaper" without a subject); the ten days' teshuvah elevates the ten soul-powers to receive it [58841/maamar_047 :: Summary]. 3. Between man and Elokim vs. between man and his fellow — Yom Kippur atones for the former outright; for the latter only after appeasing him [58841/maamar_047 :: Summary]. 4. "Bring an atonement upon Me" — not an admission against Above, but the mechanism removing the chitzonim's grip in the place of refinement, through the Rosh Chodesh goat [31695/maamar_007 :: Overview].
