Hashgachah Pratis (השגחה פרטית) — Particular Providence

Core definition

Hashgachah pratis — "particular Providence" — is the doctrine that Havayah's supervision extends not only to the general order of creation but to every individual creature and every detail of its life: "He supervises with individual providence (hashgachah pratis) over each and every one of the created beings and creatures — the smallest, lowliest, and most despised" [15644/maamar_003 :: עב׳ 34]. It is the Baal Shem Tov's signature teaching: "all the creatures of domem, tzomeiach, chai, medaber (inanimate, vegetative, animal, speaking) are all supervised by Him, blessed be He, in the finest details of their matters, each according to its level" [15644/maamar_003 :: עב׳ 43].

How the Rebbeim develop it

Providence as revealed Divinity. "Se'u marom eineichem u're'u mi bara eileh" (lift your eyes on high and see Who created these): hisbonenus in the world's creation — "the creation of all the domem, tzomeach, chai, medaber, and the hashgachah pratis in all the filling of their needs" — beholds "the wonders of Divinity" tangibly (Yiddish: men zeht di getliche vunder b'chol ha'pratey pratim mamash — one sees the divine wonders in all the details of details literally) [31682/maamar_023 :: Summary (הסימן)]. Against the denier who explains everything by nature: besides that nature itself is an Divine matter — "it is only in the bosom of the Creator, blessed be He, to imprint in the creatures their nature according to that intention for which they were created" — hashgachah pratis is "revealed Divinity, and not hidden Divinity" (hashgachah pratis iz ofene Getlichkeit — hashgachah pratis is open Divinity) — "seen by all who have a brain in his skull" [31682/maamar_023 :: Summary (הסימן)].

Many causes for every detail. "The Holy One, blessed be He, brings about many causes and reasons in order to effect some matter touching the created being" [15644/maamar_003 :: עב׳ 44]. Providence extends "equally to the highest Partzufim and the smallest worm, the torn leaf, the rolling straw" — Hashem arranges many causes, e.g., a sudden summer wind on a clear day, to effect each detail, even a straw tossed in the street, for a divine intent; certainly over man, and Israel "His close nation" in particular [15644/maamar_003 :: Summary]. This is possible because creation is not cause-and-effect but hischadshus — innovation from nothing, incomparable — so "the physical is as close to the Awtsmoos as the spiritual" [15644/maamar_003 :: Summary].

Every meeting is a divine wink. A letter of the Rebbe Rayatz teaches the Baal Shem Tov's practical rule: every meeting is by upper Providence, and its meaning must be used for a Torah matter — "every meeting is a divine wink"; even "small" happenings are hints from Heaven carrying assignments [31685/michtav_024 :: Summary]. Applied: the friend's bringing an acquaintance for an hour was no chance but hashgachah pratis's agency — "the true hashgachah pratis's agent, to bring a means of protection against a dangerous bodily danger of a Jew" [31685/michtav_024 :: Summary].

Yackov the believer. Yackov was "a believer in Havayah in hashgachah pratis": in everything that came to his hand, he used it for a high need — "to publicize His Divinity, blessed be He, in the world" [31682/maamar_023 :: Summary (הסימן)]. "Only by the decree of the supernal hashgachah they became rich" — even wealth is Providence's decree [31682/maamar_023 :: Summary (ביניים)].

Proof from the senses. Dovid proved hashgachah pratis from sight and hearing: "hanotei'a ozen halo yishma, im yotzer ayin halo yabit" — the Maker of ears and eyes must hear and see; from these powers we learn that Hashem created the world "and leads it with hashgachah pratis" [15799/maamar_006 :: Summary (section ד)].
