English translation 1
It is the first Shabbos after "the time of the giving of our Torah" in the diaspora
It is the first Shabbos after "the time of the giving of our Torah" in the diaspora
(unlike in Eretz Yisrael, where this is the second Shabbos after Shavuos),
where the majority of the quorum and the majority of the building of Bnei Yisrael are found in the present time,
which also indicates the state of spiritual matters.
That is, although Eretz Yisrael is "a land which Hashem your G-d always looks after, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"1,
which also indicates the Jews there, for whose sake the land is called by the name "Eretz Yisrael" — nevertheless,
after the Jews went into exile,
and there in exile are found the majority of the quorum and the majority of the building of Israel,
and "wherever they went into exile, the Shechinah went with them...
they went into exile to Edom, the Shechinah went with them, etc."2 — one must say that there is an advantage in this.
Beginning from this, as it is in Torah,
that although earlier there was the Talmud Yerushalmi
(the Talmud of Eretz Yisrael),
and afterwards in the Babylonian exile the Talmud Bavli was added,
nevertheless, the halachah is specifically according to the Talmud Bavli3,
because "they went into exile to Bavel, the Shechinah went with them, etc."4 or for another reason,
although the Talmud Bavli is connected with "He has made me dwell in darkness"5,
unlike the Talmud Yerushalmi which is in the aspect of direct light6,
and "there is no Torah like the Torah of Eretz Yisrael"
(according to the exposition of our Sages7 on the verse "and the gold of that land is good"8).
And so it is also understood regarding Jews in the diaspora in relation to Jews in Eretz Yisrael.
And this does not detract at all from the advantage and holiness of Eretz Yisrael,
and one may not touch it at all. For the Most High chose Eretz Yisrael from all lands
(and Yerushalayim from all cities, etc.)
as it is stated in the Mechilta9,
and "the eyes of Hashem your G-d are upon it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" —
nevertheless, the actual law is that the halachah is according to the Bavli in relation to the Yerushalmi.
And especially as we see recently how Jews in Eretz Yisrael need to come to the Jews in the diaspora — in the troubles and strange events that have recently occurred in Eretz Yisrael, which have never happened before. And it is not proper to cause pain to Jews with undesirable matters,
but on the other hand — one may also not conceal this,
therefore one mentions about this
(at least the main points).
So too regarding the festival of Shavuos,
that although in Eretz Yisrael,
where there was only one day of Shavuos,
today is the second Shabbos after Shavuos — nevertheless, there is an advantage in the diaspora
(where the majority of the quorum and the majority of the building of Israel are found),
where there were two days of Shavuos,
so that from this perspective, this is the first Shabbos after Shavuos.
And also in this very matter — in the second day of Yom Tov of the diaspora — there is an advantage over Eretz Yisrael where there is only one day of Yom Tov:
Although according to the explanation in Likkutei Torah10 and in many places11 regarding the matter of the second day of Yom Tov of the diaspora,
that from the perspective of the advantage of Eretz Yisrael, one can absorb the light of the holiness of Yom Tov there in one day, unlike in the diaspora where one needs to come to two days — nevertheless, from this actually emerges an elevation in the diaspora12,
that here one has an additional twenty-four hours of "the time of the giving of our Torah"13,
as we say it in every prayer of the Amidah
(on the second day of the festival of Shavuos)
when one stands before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He,
and several other matters on the second day of the festival of Shavuos where it is expressed that it is "the time of the giving of our Torah".
For this is indeed a second day of Yom Tov of the first day, and it has all the influences of that first day,
consequently, it turns out that in the diaspora one has two days of "the time of the giving of our Torah".
And the elevation in this is even greater on the second day of Yom Tov of Shavuos than on the second day of Yom Tov of Pesach and Sukkos — as discussed in the farbrengen beforehand14,
that the second day of Yom Tov of Shavuos is not due to "doubt of the day"
(like the second day of Yom Tov of Pesach and Sukkos),
for by then the messengers had certainly already arrived everywhere,
since the determination of Shavuos depends on the fiftieth day from the day after Pesach,
rather, the second day of Yom Tov of Shavuos is "so as not to create a division in the festivals"15,
therefore it has within it a power of certainty16.
It turns out that in the diaspora one has an advantage over Eretz Yisrael — that in the diaspora one has two days of "the time of the giving of our Torah",
and not due to doubt of the day,
but rather, even the second day is in the category of certainty.
And to add — based on what was discussed at the farbrengen before this17
(from the additions to Torah Or18),
that the festival of Shavuot is only one day, unlike the festivals of Pesach and Sukkot which are seven days,
because "the festival of Shavuot is the time of the giving of the Torah, which is in the aspect of Keter, which is the aspect of Yechidah, which is above the division of the seven middot, which are called seven days above, etc." And nevertheless, on Shavuot as well, in the Diaspora there is a second day of Yom Tov of the exile,
and with certainty — consequently it turns out that in the Diaspora they have the elevation of the extension of Shavuot, which is above the order of the chain of descent, over the course of two days.
After all this, it is understood
that this Shabbat is the first Shabbat after the time of the giving of our Torah
(in this year)
for the majority of the count and the majority of the building of Israel, who are in the Diaspora,
and they celebrated two days of Shavuot — on the sixth day and on the Shabbat day preceding this Shabbat.
The question arises:
What is the elevation in the first Shabbat after "the time of the giving of our Torah"?
Furthermore:
Since, according to all opinions, "the Torah was given on Shabbat"19 — then "the time of the giving of our Torah" itself already has the power of Shabbat,
so what is added in this Shabbat after "the time of the giving of our Torah"?!
And particularly in the determination of this year
(as was discussed14)
— when "the time of the giving of our Torah"
(the second day)
occurred on Shabbat
(with certainty,
as above14)
— then "the time of the giving of our Torah" itself has the quality of Shabbat,
so what is added in this Shabbat,
the first Shabbat after "the time of the giving of our Torah"?
It was once discussed
(and part of it has already been printed20),
that the command regarding the mitzvah of Shabbat in the Ten Commandments at the giving of the Torah only came "at the break of dawn"
("And there was thunder and lightning, etc.")
21. Consequently, it turns out that the eve of Shabbat and the night of Shabbat
(before "the break of dawn")
of that Shabbat did not possess the holiness of Shabbat from after the giving of the Torah,
and therefore there was also lacking at that time the completeness of the holiness of Shabbat of the daytime hours
(the day of Shabbat).
And even though they were commanded regarding Shabbat at Marah22,
as is explicit in the Ten Commandments themselves:
"as I commanded you"23 — "before the giving of the Torah at Marah"
(according to Rashi's commentary24 from the Sages25)
— nevertheless, at that time it did not yet have the force of the holiness of Shabbat that was revealed through the giving of the Torah,
as is understood from several matters in halachah.
As the Rambam writes26,
that "everything from which we distance ourselves or that we do today,
we do only by the command of the Holy One, blessed be He, through Moses our teacher, peace be upon him,
not because the Holy One, blessed be He, said this to the prophets before him",
as for example the mitzvah of circumcision:
"We circumcise not because Abraham our father, peace be upon him, circumcised himself and the men of his household
[even though this already had the quality of a mitzvah and its performance27,
and as "My covenant in your flesh for an everlasting covenant"28 [only afterward was the command that "on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised"29]],
but because the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded us through Moses our teacher that we should circumcise just as Abraham our father, peace be upon him, circumcised."
And likewise it is also understood regarding the mitzvah of Shabbat,
that even though they were commanded regarding it at Marah
(before the giving of the Torah),
we fulfill it not because of the command at Marah,
but because the Almighty commanded so in the Ten Commandments at the giving of the Torah.
And particularly according to what is explained in Kabbalah and Chassidus30
(in the explanation of the Midrash31),
that before the giving of the Torah there was a decree that the upper beings should not descend to the lower beings and the lower beings should not ascend to the upper beings,
but at the giving of the Torah the decree was nullified and the upper beings descended to the lower beings,
and this gave the possibility for lower beings to ascend to the upper beings. And therefore it is understood,
that the mitzvot that were fulfilled before the giving of the Torah,
including the mitzvah of Shabbat which they were commanded at Marah,
when the decree was still in its full force — did not have the elevation and the force of the mitzvah of Shabbat after the giving of the Torah,
when the decree was nullified.
And the nullification of the decree occurred "at the break of dawn",
when it was "and I began"31 — "and Hashem descended upon Mount Sinai"32.
That is, that only then was revealed the new force in the mitzvah of Shabbat that the giving of the Torah revealed,
unlike in the hours of the night and the eve of Shabbat before this,
the force of Shabbat was not yet present because at that time the decree was still in its full force.
Based on this, the elevation of the first Shabbat after the giving of the Torah is understood
(even in relation to the Shabbat of the giving of the Torah itself)
— because it was the first complete Shabbat that had within it the quality of Shabbat after the giving of the Torah
(after the nullification of the decree)!
And this is also understood regarding the "time of the giving of our Torah" each and every year,
when "these days are remembered and performed"33 and the matter of the giving of the Torah repeats itself as it was the first time,
in a manner of "new things",
and since the Torah of truth
says that it must be new,
it is a certain thing that this is so, that the time of the giving of our Torah each and every year brings in a new strength and impetus into the giving of the Torah and the commandments and the acceptance of the Torah and the commandments — and even if the animal soul,
the horse,
does not see it — this does not change the reality,34
and ultimately the horse must also perceive it, just as the wise ones who are in the wagon and travel to greet our righteous Mashiach see it
(as discussed above35) —
As it is stated further with emphasis in the fixed nature of this year,
when Shavuos
(the second day)
was on the Sabbath day:
Just as it was at the giving of the Torah the first time,
that the nullification of the decree and the new strength in the commandment of Shabbos
(and all the commandments)
was "when the morning came"
(at the time of the recitation of the Ten Commandments),
so too are they "remembered and performed" each and every year,
that the new drawing down from "the giving of the Torah" at "the time of the giving of our Torah" in a particular year,
in this case — the year 5746,
is "when the morning came"
(at the time of the Torah reading and the like),
but during the night hours and the eve of Shabbos that preceded it, it does not have the strength of "the giving of the Torah" in a manner of "new things" of the year 5746,
rather at that time there is still the drawing down from "the time of the giving of our Torah" of the year 5745.
That is, that the new drawing down and new strength in the commandment of Shabbos from "the time of the giving of our Torah" in the year 5746 begins only "when the morning came",
but during the hours of Shabbos that preceded it, it is still a Shabbos by virtue of "the time of the giving of our Torah" of the year 5745.
That is to say:
It is true, indeed,
that after the giving of the Torah in general, every Shabbos contains within itself the strength of the giving of the Torah
(and the nullification of the decree),
but within this itself, a new drawing down comes each and every year,
and this new drawing down occurs "when the morning came" of "the time of the giving of our Torah" in that particular year
(the year 5746),
but not so during the hours that preceded it — the drawing down from the previous year still shines
(the year 5745).
Only the first Shabbos after "the time of the giving of our Torah" — this present Shabbos — is the first complete Shabbos that contains within itself the strength of "the time of the giving of our Torah" of the year 5746.
Further:
Since on this Shabbos of the giving of the Torah and of "the time of the giving of our Torah"
(the preceding Shabbos)
the new drawing down of the year 5746 occurs "when the morning came"
(but during the hours that preceded it, it is still the drawing down from the time of the giving of our Torah of the year 5745)
— it is understood that also the hours after "when the morning came" are not with such completeness as on the Shabbos that follows this
(the first Shabbos after "the time of the giving of our Torah"),
when the entire Shabbos is a Shabbos that comes after the new drawing down at "the time of the giving of our Torah" in this year.
For "each day does its work"36,
each day is a single entity that has its specific task;
יעדער טאג איז א מציאות אחת וואס האט זיין עבודה מסויימת;
and since a day has twenty-four hours,
it is understood that the completeness of
(the work of)
that day is specifically through all twenty-four hours,
if an hour or a minute or a moment is missing,
the completeness of that day is lacking.
And nevertheless, the day is divided into smaller parts of time,
until each and every moment does its work
("all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven"37 and "in all your ways know Him"38)
— it is, however, understood that when several moments join together,
and especially from the same day,
it has further power and completeness.
As explained in tractate Sotah,39
that when two people lift a burden together,
they can lift more than twice as much as each one of them alone can lift.
All the more so with a multitude of people. And likewise regarding time — that when several moments join together, a higher completeness comes about
(more than several times as much as each one of them has individually).
This is the reason why when sixty parts
(minutes)
join together, through which one hour is formed — there comes about
(not merely an addition in quantity,
but an addition in quality —)
a new combination of the Name Havayah40 which has a specific function,
which this combination
(and specific function)
did not exist in the previous hour and will not exist in the following hour.
Afterwards,
when twelve hours come together - a completeness arrives, higher in time - the completeness of day
(twelve hours of the day),
or night
(twelve hours of the night),
which in generality more
(regarding hours)
divides the service of man into day and night - the order of service by day and the order of service by night.
And then - from day and night a new reality of a complete day is formed,
and in the language of Scripture *40:
"And there was evening and there was morning" - becomes a new reality - "one day",
that "each day does its work".
From this it is also understood regarding the day of Shabbat,
that its completeness is specifically when it consists of all the hours of the day,
the hours of the night and the hours of the day.
And therefore:
in that Shabbat of the Giving of the Torah and of the time of the Giving of our Torah,
the entire Shabbat did not have the completeness of the Giving of the Torah
(and in this year - of the new continuation of "the time of the Giving of our Torah" from the year 5746),
because the Giving of the Torah was only "when the morning came";
ווארום מ"ת איז ערשט געווען "בהיות הבוקר";
the completeness of Shabbat with the power of after the Giving of the Torah
(and in this year - with the power of the new continuation of the year 5746),
is only in that Shabbat after this,
which is a complete Shabbat after the Giving of the Torah.
And it is understood simply that all matters must be in completeness,
all the more so a matter connected with the Giving of the Torah and the Ten Commandments,
whose essence is to add completeness to all the work of creation,
all the more so in the matter of Shabbat,
which is a primary matter in the work of creation - "a remembrance of the work of creation",
as we say it in the Shabbat prayer.
And as is known, on Shabbat there are two matters,
"a remembrance of the work of creation" - "for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth etc."
(as it is stated in the Ten Commandments in Parshat Yitro),
and "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt" - "and you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt etc."
(as it is stated in the Ten Commandments in Parshat Va'etchanan).
And these two matters on Shabbat exist in every moment of each Shabbat.
That is, it is not only in a manner of "these and those are the words of the living God",
where both opinions are true,
but the practical law is only according to one opinion;
אבער די הלכה למעשה איז נאר לויט איין דיעה 47;
however, regarding "a remembrance of the work of creation" and "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt" on Shabbat - both matters exist in practical law in every Shabbat.
Just as this is regarding "Remember" and "Guard" on Shabbat - that although in the Ten Commandments in Parshat Yitro it says "Remember" and in Parshat Va'etchanan it says "Guard",
both matters exist in practical law in every moment of every Shabbat.
There is only a difference,
that on Shabbat eve the matter of "Guard" is more revealed
(Malchut),
and on Shabbat day the matter of "Remember" is more revealed
(Zeir Anpin),
(ז"א) 48,
which in generality is the difference between the aspect of cessation and rest from work
(Shabbat eve),
or rest in essence
(Shabbat day);
(יומא דשבתא) 49;
and similarly "a remembrance of the work of creation" is more revealed on Shabbat eve
(therefore we say "a remembrance of the work of creation" in the prayer of Shabbat night),
however on Shabbat day it is not so revealed
(therefore we do not say it in the morning prayer)
as explained in various places - but in generality both matters exist in every moment of Shabbat.
Regarding our matter, from this it is understood,
that the Giving of the Torah
(the Ten Commandments)
added a new power and completeness in the entire twenty-four hour period of Shabbat,
both Shabbat eve
(the aspect of Guard,
as it is written in the Ten Commandments in Parshat Va'etchanan)
and Shabbat day
(the aspect of Remember,
as it is written in the Ten Commandments in Parshat Yitro).
And these two matters exist in every moment of Shabbat,
as mentioned above.
And consequently it is understood,
that in order to have the completeness of Shabbat one must have the entire twenty-four hour period,
both Shabbat eve and Shabbat day.
With this is explained the superiority of the first Shabbat after the time of the Giving of our Torah over the Shabbat of the time of the Giving of our Torah itself - because this is the first complete twenty-four hour period of Shabbat that contains within it the new continuation of the Giving of the Torah
(in this year),
however in the Shabbat of the time of the Giving of our Torah the new continuation began only "when the morning came",
but Shabbat eve was still before the new continuation of the Giving of the Torah
(connected with the continuation of the previous year),
consequently there was then also lacking in the completeness of the later hours,
Shabbat day,
as mentioned above.
And in particular according to the difficulty in the Mechilta - that also a difficulty in the Torah is Torah;
ובפרט לויט דער קס"ד אין מכילתא 52 - וואס אויך א קס"ד אין תורה איז תורה 53;
Torah will not bring a difficulty that is contrary to the Torah - that the entire twenty-four hour period of Shabbat is one point. And consequently it turns out,
since the earlier hours of that Shabbat of the giving of the Torah and the time of the giving of our Torah were before the new extension of the giving of the Torah in this year,
it is also lacking in the later hours of that Shabbat
(after "it was morning").
6. A parenthetical statement:
The aforementioned matter that Torah will not bring a difficulty that is contrary to the Torah - is also regarding what the Semak writes,
that the opinion of householders is contrary to the opinion of Torah:
The very fact that the opinion of householders is excluded from the opinion of Torah is a proof that there is a difficulty that householders could indeed express an opinion. For if it is about ordinary householders who cannot study,
one would not need to exclude and say that their opinion is contrary to the opinion of Torah and they cannot render a ruling,
because then without that there is no such difficulty.
If the householders do not know the law,
one need do no more than show them the law in the Shulchan Aruch;
דארף מען ניט מער ווי זיי באווייזן די הלכה אין שו"ע;
rather it is about householders who can study and have ordination for the rabbinate,
but by Divine Providence he is a householder,
of Zevulun - one says in such a case that also his opinion
(even though he can study and has ordination)
is contrary to the opinion of Torah and he is not a decisor! Specifically one who, in addition to ordination, was also appointed,
by Divine Providence,
as a rabbi and decisor - specifically he can render a ruling of a law according to the opinion of Torah.
He asks the question:
Torah is indeed connected with wisdom and intellect and understanding and comprehension,
and he can indeed study until he has ordination - what difference does it make whether he is a householder or a rabbi?
There is upon this an explanation in simple terms and a story and a great deed
(which appears to be a true story)
- which is understandable in simple terms even to an ordinary householder who does not have ordination,
all the more so a householder who can study and has ordination:
The question is not why every student of Torah cannot render a ruling on a question in law - rather the question is exactly the opposite:
Since Torah is the Torah of the Holy One, blessed be He, and it is "longer than the earth and broader than the sea" - how can even a rabbi render a ruling on a question and be certain that he has aimed at the truth?!
To this the answer is - that for this he is given Divine assistance,
in the language of our Sages, of blessed memory - "and He is with him that the law is according to him":
When it is about the study of the part of analysis in the Torah
("these and those are the words of the living God")
and the fulfillment of the obligation of "to expand it" - it is required that he use his intellect and toil to understand the matter,
at which time he has the promise that "I have toiled and I have found." If he will go slowly and not exert himself etc. - he will not succeed;
וואס דעמולט האט ער די הבטחה אז "יגעתי ומצאתי" 60. אויב ער וועט גיין פאמעלעך און זיך ניט אנשטרענגען וכו' - וועט ער ניט מצליח זיין;
but if he will toil - there will be "and I have found."
When it is about rendering a ruling on a question for practical law - that it should be "the law is according to him" - his intellect and understanding and comprehension are not sufficient,
rather for this he is given Divine assistance
(in addition to the fact that he has ordination)
- "and He is with him",
that He who was, is, and will be as one becomes
("with him" -)
clothed in a flesh and blood person,
and this gives him the power that he should aim at the truth and it should be "the law is according to him."
From this it is understood,
that even when it is about one who can study and has ordination,
but by Divine Providence he is a householder - he can toil and understand Torah well,
but the Almighty does not give him the Divine assistance that he should be able to aim at the truth and render a ruling on a question in a manner that it should be "the law is according to him",
until - that one says that his opinion is not merely not according to the opinion of the Torah,
but contrary to the opinion of Torah!
Specifically one whom they appointed,
by Divine Providence,
to be a rabbi and decisor to render rulings on questions for practical law - to him they give Divine assistance that he should aim at the truth and render a ruling according to the Torah of truth.
And it is known the story about this
(as one used to tell)
with a great one in Israel,
whom they tested whether he is suitable to be a rabbi,
as it is customary that before one appoints a rabbi, they examine him in Torah — the aspect of this was specifically in his knowledge in Torah and halachah,
because this is the role of a rabbi,
and not with money,
or because he is a relative of his,
or because he
(the householder)
wants to be a "one who crowns kings" from "from whom are kings, from the rabbis",
and wants to prove that he is a householder and that he has the power to appoint a rabbi,
until this leads to the opposite of love of Israel and all the more so unity of Israel etc. —
they presented him with several questions,
and he answered all of them correctly except for one question. A debate began whether he is fit to be a rabbi since he could not answer correctly one of the questions. Until they asked the rabbi himself — what does he say about this, that he answered all the questions correctly except for that one question.
He answered,
that the question was not relevant to practical halachah,
therefore the Above did not give him the heavenly assistance in order to be directed to the truth.
That is to say:
when it is about a question that is relevant to practical halachah,
he receives heavenly assistance in order to be able to rule and be directed to the truth;
באקומט ער סייעתא דשמיא בכדי צו קענען פסק'נען ומכוון זיין אל האמת;
but when it is about merely a question that is not relevant to practical halachah,
and only for honor of flesh and blood — sometimes one is also warned about this,
but it is not necessary that one should be warned about it,
therefore he was not directed to the truth regarding it.
Afterwards they clarified and saw that the question was indeed not relevant to practical halachah,
rather it was a question from one who stirs up strife,
whose intention was not for the sake of heaven,
rather to provoke,
even though regarding the rabbi there was no suspicion,
as is understood from this very fact that he answered all the other questions correctly.
From this it is understood regarding the opinion of householders contrary to the opinion of Torah:
when it is about a debate in Torah,
everyone can toil and succeed to understand. But when it is about practical halachah — one needs for this to have heavenly assistance.
And therefore:
even a householder who knows how to learn and has ordination for rabbinate — if he is however
(by divine providence)
even occupied with communal needs,
which is even higher than Torah
(and therefore he is exempt from Torah study),
or he is occupied with saving lives,
which overrides the entire Torah — they do not give him assistance from above to rule on questions of halachah.
Specifically one whom they appointed
(by divine providence)
as a rabbi to rule on questions of halachah,
specifically to him they give heavenly assistance to be able to rule on questions and be directed to the truth of the Torah of truth.
End of the parenthetical statement.
Returning to our subject:
the aspect of this Shabbat,
the first Shabbat after the time of the giving of our Torah,
regarding the Shabbat of the time of the giving of our Torah — is in the manner and analogous to the aforementioned aspect of halachah regarding debate:
before there was the new drawing down "when it was morning" on the preceding Shabbat — this is in the manner of the level of "debate" that does not yet have the heavenly assistance of the new drawing down of the giving of the Torah in this year;
איידער ס'איז געווען די המשכה חדשה "בהיות הבוקר" בשבת שלפנ"ז - איז דאס ע"ד די דרגא פון "שקו"ט" וואס האט נאך ניט די סייעתא דשמיא פון דער המשכה חדשה דמ"ת בשנה זו;
specifically in this Shabbat comes the matter of heavenly assistance, that the entire twenty-four hour period of Shabbat
(from Shabbat eve and the day of Shabbat)
is a Shabbat that comes after the new drawing down and giving of power from the time of the giving of our Torah in this year.
And based on this, the superiority of today's Shabbat is understood:
as stated above that at the time of the giving of our Torah each and every year, a new drawing down and giving of power and strength in matters of Torah and His commandments is drawn in a manner of "new things" that until now had never been *66,
i.e., that after the time of the giving of the Torah in all the preceding years, the Above did not draw down such a drawing down in the matters of the Torah and His commandments;
ד.ה. אז לאחרי זמן מתן תורתנו בכל השנים שלפנ"ז האט דער אויבערשטער ניט ממשיך געווען אזא המשכה בעניני התורה ומצוותי';
but at the time of the giving of our Torah in this year,
"when it was morning",
the Above saw that now is the time fit to draw down the drawing down!
But the continuation came only in the middle of the Shabbat of the time of the giving of our Torah.
(“When it was morning”);
("בהיות הבוקר");
The innovation of today’s Shabbat is that it is the first complete Shabbat after the new continuation and empowerment from the time of the giving of our Torah in the manner of “new things,”
in a renewed manner with a new impetus. Consequently, it follows
that this Shabbat brings completeness in the new continuation of “the time of the giving of our Torah” in this year — as is known that on the day of Shabbat, “Vayechulu” is from the term completeness regarding the days preceding it,
most of the days of the week preceding it
(until Thursday)
were days of completion
(until the completion of the completions on the twelfth of Sivan)
of the time of the giving of our Torah in this year.
And from this emerges the instruction for each and every one:
When one contemplates the elevation of this Shabbat — everyone can take from it powers regarding an increase in his service,
in the study of Torah and the fulfillment of commandments, etc.
However, the question arises:
We are already after the reading of the Torah and certainly after the eve of Shabbat
(of the first Shabbat after the time of the giving of our Torah)
— what then is the practical difference now of the innovation of this Shabbat
(that even the eve of Shabbat is after the giving of the Torah)
regarding the previous Shabbat
(which also had the innovation of the giving of the Torah after “when it was morning”)?!
In addition to what was discussed above, that also the day of Shabbat of this Shabbat is higher than the day of Shabbat of the previous Shabbat
(because when the entire twenty-four hour period is a Shabbat after the giving of the Torah, it brings an elevation in all hours of the day,
in contrast to when not in all hours was there the new continuation,
then it is also lacking in the later hours)
— a Jew is a master also over the past,
certainly over the past of the same day
(the day of Shabbat),
because all hours of the day are connected,
until one point
(according to the known principle in the Mechilta),
as above:
From the perspective of the regular order of Torah and commandments, a Jew is a master only over the present and future;
מצד דעם סדר הרגיל פון תורה ומצוות איז א איד א בעה"ב נאר אויפן הוה ועתיד;
but from the perspective of the power of repentance, a Jew becomes a master also over the past,
he can redo and transform the past.
And not as the error of the world — as explained in Likkutei Torah — that repentance is only for deficiency,
or even lower,
rather repentance is an order of service for all Jews,
even for one who stands at the pinnacle of perfection,
and in the well-known phrase — “to bring the righteous to repentance.” He can be a completely righteous person,
but in addition, the perfection of the service of repentance must also come to him,
i.e., service that is beyond measure and limitation,
“with all your might,”
not only “with all your heart and with all your soul” of the service of the righteous.
And after Chassidus revealed that repentance is an order of service,
it becomes an order of service in the manner of “the regular daily offerings in their order” for all Jews according to law
(not only according to Kabbalah and according to Chassidus and beyond the letter of the law).
As discussed many times,
that after the Rema ruled in the Shulchan Aruch that there are those who practice as a custom that which is
(until then had been)
beyond the letter of the law — it becomes a law in the Shulchan Aruch for all Jews,
and “the children of Israel go out by the hand of the Rema,”
with the rulings of the Rema
(as is known the explanation regarding the witty expression on this).
And the service of repentance — service that is beyond measure and limitation — is found in every Jew according to his level,
as explained in Tanya that “the essence of repentance is in the heart,
and the heart has many aspects and levels, and everything is according to the person and according to the time and place, etc.”
And when a Jew performs his service in a manner of repentance — then he becomes a master also over the past.
And simply — regarding our subject:
When one did not do something completely or did not do it in the past — the advice for this is that now one should do it in a manner of “double for wisdom,”
and in the language of the Alter Rebbe in his glosses
(from Tanna Devei Eliyahu,
and as discussed previously that this is stated in Vayikra Rabbah):
“If one was accustomed to study one page, let him study two pages,
to review one chapter, let him review two chapters, their merit.” And then one also rectifies and completes the past.
And as stated above,
that this applies to all Jews — even to those who performed their service with complete perfection,
they can always further complete their service,
including “complete” from the term completeness.
And the matter is simply:
Everyone can imagine,
even from now onward
(all the more so regarding the past),
that he will not do all matters of divine service with perfect completeness,
in the manner of "with all your might",
above measure and limitation - because every person has his primary matters and line of divine service in which he is mainly engrossed,
and he does them with more completeness and fervor than the matters in which he is not so engrossed,
even though he also does these because I was created to serve my Maker *81,
he must also do these matters.
For example, the general difference between those who dwell in the tent and businessmen:
Those who dwell in the tent also need to have the matter of acts of kindness,
and one who says I have only Torah, even Torah he does not have,
rather it must be "Torah and acts of kindness",
and correspondingly businessmen must have fixed times for Torah
(as explained in Iggeret HaKodesh).
But it is understood,
since the primary service of those who dwell in the tent is the study of Torah,
in this is their main engrossment - it is understandable that they do this with more completeness,
up to "with all your might",
than they do the service of acts of kindness, indeed "with all your heart and with all your soul" but not "with all your might".
And correspondingly regarding businessmen in relation to the study of Torah.
And so forth.
If only everyone would do all matters of divine service in the manner of "with all your might",
but the reality is not so.
From this the practical instruction in this Shabbat is understood:
Standing in this first Shabbat after "the time of the giving of our Torah" in this year,
when one receives Torah and commandments in a renewed manner with new fervor and strength,
"new" - everyone must utilize the powers that are given to him to accept resolutions - and resolutions with truth,
whose characteristic is - at the time he brings it down immediately into actual deed and does not postpone it for later - to add with greater excellence and greater strength,
and in the manner of "double for the prudent",
in the study of Torah
(coming now from the time of the giving of our Torah when the Jewish people were given Torah in a renewed manner).
And great is study that brings to deed - an addition in the fulfillment of the commandments,
including the commandment of repentance,
which makes him a master also over the past.
And each and every one must derive from this the instruction measured according to his level of divine service and according to his matters.
And regarding this there is the promise and granting of power,
that one will succeed in this,
and in the language of his holiness, my master and father-in-law, the Rebbe - with great and extraordinary success.
Until that through an addition in one thought,
in one speech or in one deed - he tips the scales for himself and for the entire world to the side of merit and brings about for himself and for them salvation and deliverance
(as per the ruling of the Rambam),
until the primary salvation and deliverance for the entire world - the true and complete redemption,
in general and in particular,
when then they will receive "a new Torah from Me shall go forth",
and "they shall all know Me, from their smallest to their greatest",
and speedily in our actual days.
In the fixed calendar of this year
[according to the calculation of Rabbi Hillel (the grandson of Hillel the Elder) thousands of years ago]
the first Shabbat after the time of the giving of our Torah is Shabbat Parshat Nasso,
when we read in the Torah - according to the custom of Israel which is Torah - Parshat Nasso.
One must also derive from this particular fixed calendar an instruction in connection with the general instruction mentioned above of this first Shabbat after "the time of the giving of our Torah",
according to the well-known teaching of the Alter Rebbe that one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion.
And even though a commandment or a custom of Israel is itself a
(Torah means)
teaching,
an instruction that one should fulfill the commandment or custom - this is however
(in addition to this)
also an instruction in other matters and in the totality of divine service,
as understood a fortiori from the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that from every thing that a person sees or hears he must derive an instruction in divine service,
all the more so a matter in Torah and commandments and the fixing of months according to the Torah and the custom of Israel is Torah,
certainly there is from this an instruction in the totality of divine service,
As the Rambam writes, "Most of the laws of the Torah are only to correct the opinions and to straighten all deeds, etc." And although the commandments
(the laws of the Torah)
are an instruction in themselves and one must fulfill them because of that which "He sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us,"
a "bond and connection" with the Holy One, blessed be He,
nevertheless the Rambam writes that "they are only to correct the opinions and to straighten all deeds,"
and to such an extent is "opinions" an essential matter,
that the Rambam placed it
(Laws of Opinions)
at the beginning of his book of laws,
immediately after the Laws of the Foundations of the Torah.
It is also understood from the aforementioned teaching of the Alter Rebbe
(regarding living with the time)
— that one must live with the weekly portion not specifically at the time one reads and studies the weekly portion,
but rather this is primarily spoken about — that during the other times of the day,
when one is occupied with "in all your ways" and "all your deeds,"
one must also then live with the weekly portion.
The instruction from Parshat Nasso:
"Nasso"
(the name of the entire portion)
means — to lift up,
what does one lift up — "
(Nasso)
the head,"
and the general concept of the head is — the intellect.
And through this that it becomes "Nasso et Rosh,"
one sees in actuality that the rest of the parts of the body are lifted up, including even the heel of the foot.
That is, that "Nasso" indicates the concept that the matters of man are elevated to a higher level. Beginning from "Nasso et Rosh,"
that the intellect is elevated. And through this — the rest of the parts of the body are elevated higher.
And in divine service:
The commandments are dependent on the limbs of man,
commandments dependent on the head,
dependent on the heart, etc.
"Nasso" gives the power to elevate all these commandments dependent on the limbs of the body. Beginning from the commandment of Torah study which is dependent on the intellect in the head. And through this — all the other commandments dependent on the rest of the parts of the body are elevated,
beginning — from the spinal cord
(through which "the vitality is drawn from the intellect to all the limbs"),
the concept of the service of prayer *96,
until in a manner of "all my bones shall say,"
and through this there is a fulfillment in the Torah
(head),
as our sages, of blessed memory, said *97 "Because they are pious, their Torah is preserved" until "is blessed,"
And from this "Nasso" in the spinal cord
(prayer)
the eighteen vertebrae of the spine are also elevated,
until all the parts of the body,
the commandments dependent on the rest of the parts of the body,
until the foot and the heel of the foot,
and the commandments dependent on the heel of the foot,
and in general — "run to a commandment" *98,
which is dependent on the foot being lifted up
("Nasso")
from the earth, where then the concept of walking and running and jumping and leaping applies
("jumping and leaping"),
with all the details thereof as they are reflected in the service of man.
It is, that one should add with greater vigor and greater strength in Torah study and the fulfillment of the commandments
(as above, section 17 and onward).
When it occurs on Shabbat of Parshat Nasso — it adds to the instruction and the powers,
that the new effluence of Torah and commandments in this year
("new things")
is in a manner of "Nasso,"
elevated,
beginning from the lifting of the head — that the concept of Torah study
(a commandment dependent on the intellect in the head)
is elevated,
and through this — the rest of the parts of the body are elevated,
beginning from the service of prayer
(the spinal cord),
and all the rest of the commandments dependent on the body.
And all this — in a manner of "all your work is done" and the delight of Shabbat. And the gain in this is,
not only that he receives reward for the effort of doing in it,
but moreover:
from the outset it is indeed from within all delight.
From this one has the instruction simply:
One must utilize the powers to add more simply in Torah study with diligence and persistence,
the study of the revealed and the study of Chassidus.
And also — an addition in the service of prayer,
until in a manner of "all my bones shall say,"
which brings about a perfection in Torah,
as above.
And through this — there must also come "Nasso" in all the other commandments dependent on the body,
until the heel of the foot,
in general — the concept of "run to a commandment,"
which is specifically by means of the heel of the foot,
which one places on the ground,
and afterwards one lifts it up, etc.
And in addition to this "Nasso" which must be in one's own "body,"
one's own commandments dependent on the body — there must also come a "Nasso" in the service of influencing others,
that one should elevate also the other.
And the explanation regarding that just as every Jew has a "head" and powers of the soul
(in which they are "carried"),
so too does every Jew have the power to influence others.
As we see in the commandment of charity - that every Jew,
even a poor and destitute person
(the lowest level of poverty),
is obligated in the commandment of charity,
exactly as in the observance of Shabbat and the like.
And through this it is understood regarding spiritual charity,
that every Jew possesses matters in which he is obligated to influence others.
And that one has no desire for this - the Rambam has already warned about this:
"His evil inclination has overcome him." But in his innermost and true self, his will is to fulfill the will of G-d,
including - to give charity and influence others!
And on the contrary:
"More than the calf wants to suck, the cow wants to nurse,"
the influencer wants to influence more than the recipient wants to receive!
And since this is his true will - it is understandable,
that when he withholds his influence from others,
with all kinds of excuses,
he has no desire and no time,
it is not his concern,
it is a crooked thing,
let others do it etc. - all this comes from "his evil inclination has overcome him" to act contrary to his true will to fulfill the will of G-d!
And what emerges from this is that in addition to what then
(when he does not influence another)
is lacking in interpersonal matters,
in "love your neighbor as yourself,"
there is also lacking then in matters between man and G-d,
between him and the Almighty,
because he is not fulfilling the will of G-d to influence others.
And then we see,
that just as "one commandment brings another commandment" so too the opposite - that his lack of influence to others causes that in his own service there should also be lacking!
And nevertheless we see that after all this - there are those who do not conduct themselves this way - this is because "his evil inclination has overcome him" and with him there is a state of "they turned to Me their back and not their face,"
meaning, he stands near the Almighty,
"they turned to Me,"
but he is turned with his "back" towards Him. And moreover - "and not their face":
it could be that he stands with his back but also sometimes with his face,
or with his face and back;
אדער מיט זיין פנים ועורף;
here it says however that it is "they turned to Me their back and not their face,"
only with the back and entirely not with the face!...
And also for this we have the instruction from "Nasso,"
that just as one must elevate his own matters and matters of service,
so too must one elevate the other by influencing him.
And even if it is a state of "his evil inclination has overcome him"
(as above)
- one has the power from the blessings and answering of Amen of the seven called up and the Haftarah,
as discussed above
(section 2),
that greater is the one who answers Amen than the one who blesses,
the mighty ones who are victorious in the war against the evil inclination.
And being on the day of Shabbat
(when the entire portion of Nasso is read),
one has additionally the power that all this should be accomplished in a manner of rest and delight,
because "all your work is done."
And with revealed delight - not hidden kindnesses,
in a manner of "abundant goodness that they cannot bear,"
but specifically revealed kindnesses before our physical eyes,
as we request in the prayer "open the gates of heaven and open Your good treasure for us,"
and one connects
(as one instructs the cantor and children and the like to be precise)
"for us" to "the good,"
because the intention in this is - the drawing down of the kindness "which is good for us with goodness that is seen and revealed even below from now."
And we say it in a prayer that "prayer is a term of connection...
And in the language of the Mishnah, "the one who attaches an earthenware vessel,"
a Jew,
who is like an "earthenware vessel,"
and moreover - "like a broken shard" *116 - connects himself with the Supreme One,
and becomes attached to Him. So that through this he becomes "the one who attaches an earthenware vessel" - that he repairs the cracks in the "broken shard,"
or moreover
(if this concerns a "healthy earthenware vessel")
- through this the entire existence of the "earthenware vessel" is created. And this comes about through the fact that a Jew stands in a state of self-nullification,
like an "earthenware vessel"
(from earth, etc.,
whose meaning is self-nullification)
*117,
*117,
and moreover - "a broken earthenware vessel,"
he becomes a complete vessel for the Essence and Being and becomes connected with Him. And from this Jew - it is then drawn forth into the world,
which is also likened to a "broken earthenware vessel."
Until the prayer is fulfilled
(as we will soon pray)
- "May our eyes behold Your return to Zion with mercy,"
speedily in our days, literally.
16. Discourse (like a talk) beginning with the words "And all the people saw the voices, etc."
At a farbrengen on Shabbat, it is also customary to dwell on a matter in the weekly Torah portion together with Rashi;
אין א התוועדות פון שבת איז אויך רגיל אפצושטעלן זיך אויף אן ענין אין פרשת השבוע צוזאמען מיט פרש"י;
a matter in Pirkei Avot
(on the Shabbatot when we study Pirkei Avot);
(אין די שבתות ווען מ'לערנט פרקי אבות);
a matter in the current Rambam lesson;
אן ענין אין היינטיקן שיעור רמב"ם;
and a matter in the notes of the Tatte on the Zohar.
Based on the suggestion, they themselves raised - and may blessing come upon them - matters in Rashi on our portion that need to be completed and explained.
We will dwell on a matter at the beginning of the portion of Sotah in our portion - which has a special connection to the present time. Coming from the time of the Giving of our Torah,
which comes after the preparation of the Counting of the Omer
[as explained in the Ran in the name of the "Haggadah,"
that "when you take the people out of Egypt" the Jews counted the days when they would already arrive at "you shall serve God on this mountain"],
as discussed above that the Omer has a connection with the meal-offering of the Sotah,
because both are of barley,
animal food,
the service with the animal soul
(as explained above from the discourse of the middle Rebbe).
The portion of Sotah begins with "And God spoke to Moses, saying,
Speak to the children of Israel and say to them
[in the manner of the entire concept of the Giving of the Torah - "Moses received the Torah from Sinai and transmitted it, etc." down to all Jews]
Any man, any man, if his wife goes astray and commits a trespass against him, etc."
Rashi dwells on the words "any man, any man" and explains:
"To teach you that she is treacherous with two,
with the Man of War above
[as it is stated in the Song of the Sea in Parshat Beshalach 130 "God is a Man of War" *]
and her husband below."
The question was asked,
the "classic question":
What is missing here in the verse that Rashi needs to give an explanation at all? Earlier in the Torah, the phrase "any man, any man" appears several times, and Rashi does not explain it there at all,
and simply - because the explanation of this is very simple,
that by this the verse comes to include and emphasize that the command is for all Jews without exception. So why does Rashi need to give an explanation here on "any man, any man"?!
And the question is twofold:
Why does Rashi need to give an explanation at all as above?
And even if he does give an explanation,
he should have explained it simply,
that this comes to include every single man without exception. As the Gemara indeed explains on "any man, any man,"
that this comes to include the wife of a deaf-mute, etc.,
which is also consistent with the simple meaning
(at least as a teaching of our Sages that is close to the simple meaning);
(עכ"פ אלס א דרשה פון רבותינו וואס איז קרוב אל הפשט 132);
But from where does Rashi take, in the plain meaning of Scripture, the explanation that "any man, any man" means "to teach you
[this is an additional teaching]
that she is treacherous with the Man of War above and her husband below"?!
And specifically in this order
(first "Man of War above" and then "her husband below")!
And especially that for this one must also arrive at a proof from a verse in Parshat Beshalach,
which has no connection to this verse here!
For this, one must also find a connection of this matter in Rashi with love and unity of Israel - coming from the "time of the Giving of our Torah" which is especially connected with love and unity of Israel,
as discussed above at length.
It is also understood from the words of our Sages, of blessed memory,
that love of Israel is not merely a "great principle of the Torah" among other great principles of the Torah,
but rather "the entire Torah in its entirety, and the rest is its explanation; go and learn."
That is, that the aspect of whether one has studied and understood
(even in the manner of "learn,"
with comprehension and perception)
every matter in the Torah until the entire Torah in its entirety
(which was given at Mount Sinai)
is — if one sees in it an explanation of love of Israel!
There must certainly be a lesson in love of Israel from every single matter in the Torah,
including from this Rashi mentioned above.
And as will be explained further.
In the notes of my father on the Zohar in our portion, one need not seek a connection with love of Israel:
My father bases himself on what is stated in the Zohar:
"Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai rejoiced and said: 'Hashem, I have heard Your report; I am afraid.' There it was fitting to be in awe,
but we, the matter depends on love, as it is written: 'And you shall love Hashem your God,' and it is written: 'Because of Hashem's love for you,'
and it is written: 'I have loved you, says Hashem.'"
Here one sees clearly the emphasis on love of Israel and in connection with the giving of the Torah:
Regarding what Habakkuk said in connection with the giving of the Torah, "Hashem, I have heard Your report; I am afraid"
(as it is said in the haftarah of Shavuot)
— Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said that "we, the matter depends on love,"
where "matter" here refers to the subject of the giving of the Torah — that the "matter"
(the giving of the Torah)
about which Habakkuk says that it is connected with awe,
is "we, the matter depends on love."
And he brings on this three verses,
not only the verse of "And you shall love Hashem your God,"
which refers to love of Hashem,
from which one must arrive at the lesson of "love what the Beloved loves" in order to have love of Israel — but he also brings two verses where it is stated explicitly and clearly about love of Israel by the Holy One, blessed be He.
And on the contrary — he brings on this two verses,
"double for wisdom"
(relative to the one verse that speaks about love of Hashem by Israel):
"Because of Hashem's love for you" and "I have loved you, says Hashem." And this
(love of Israel by the Holy One, blessed be He)
also brings about love of Israel one for another,
for "just as He is called compassionate, so too you be compassionate;
just as He is called merciful, so too you be merciful, etc."
And as will be explained further. On this Shabbat
(the first after Shavuot)
one studies the first chapter of Pirkei Avot — according to the custom of "some who are accustomed" to read or study Pirkei Avot on the Shabbatot of the summer,
and as was heard from His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe.
As one also sees in several discourses of our Rabbis, our leaders,
from His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and the leaders before him,
that a discourse was said on the Shabbatot of the summer with an opening phrase from the chapter of that Shabbat.
And as will be explained further.
Similarly, there is also the custom that was accepted and spread to study the daily portion in the Rambam — and as will be explained further.
And may it be His will that each one should increase in his Torah studies,
each one according to his measure,
and together with this, it is all a part of one Torah. As one sees it simply:
From one matter in the Torah comes an addition of comprehension and perception in all the other matters of the Torah,
until a principle in the entire Torah. As one sees it in practice,
and if one does not see it himself,
another can prove it to him.
And especially when one studies the Torah lessons in public and in a group — for then it has the advantage of Torah in a group,
as the Alter Rebbe innovates in Iggeret HaKodesh,
that "the occupation with Torah and commandments in a group of ten" has within it the advantage of prayer in a group,
for "behold, God is mighty and does not despise,"
as explained there in the explanation of the Mishnah: "Ten who sit and occupy themselves with Torah, the Divine Presence dwells among them."
And this is especially connected with the redemption of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the leader of our generation,
for after his redemption he issued [the instruction] to study in public the discourse beginning "Ten who sit and occupy themselves with Torah."
And the advantage of a group exists regarding all matters of service — as explained in Kuntres HaChalutz
(in the talk and in the discourse,
which is already printed)
that "the agreement that many make has much more strength than the agreement that one makes by himself."
And through the fact that there is a congregation of Jews, not only is Ahavat Yisrael
(but each one remains an independent entity)
but also Achdut Yisrael,
that they become a single entity of one minyan,
until even if there are more than ten of Israel,
even ten minyans or more than that,
they are not ten minyans and the like,
but one minyan. Through each additional person, certainly "b'rov am hadrat melech" is added,
but all the people together are a single entity.
As the law is regarding Birkat HaMazon
[which includes - from His full, open, holy and broad hand]
that even with a hundred and a thousand and a myriad
[and in the broad sense, "myriad" also means a multitude,
even more than ten thousand]
- one recites the same formula of zimmun as with ten.
And in addition, it also has the advantage of the place - that one is located in this Beit HaKnesset and Beit HaMidrash,
a place where Torah and prayer are magnified,
of His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation,
where he was during the ten final years - the conclusion and seal - of his life and vitality in this world.
Therefore,
as is customary,
those who have sent bottles for various occasions in the coming days in order to connect them with the place and the farbrengen - should now go up to the front and themselves say "L'Chaim",
and announce and inform everyone about the occasions,
and afterwards distribute a portion of the beverage here
(since it is Shabbat *156),
and the rest - at the continuation of each individual occasion.
And at the occasions, they will certainly accept good resolutions,
or do so in actual practice,
or both together - in the matter of Ahavat and Achdut Yisrael,
through the very concept of gathering together in one occasion,
which brings about not only Ahavat Yisrael,
but also Achdut Yisrael - one entity of a single congregation,
as above.
And from this congregation and public, may there soon be literally "Kahal Gadol Yashuvu Hena",
"b'neareinu u'v'zekeineinu, b'baneinu u'v'noteinu",
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,
speedily in our days, literally.
[Afterwards, the Rebbe Shlita gave a bottle of beverage to:
R. Z. HaKohen K. Shy"a (for Melaveh Malkah for the benefit of "Ma'amad").
R. Y.A. Shy"a (for the completion of the tractate Nezikin in the Rambam - for those learning one chapter per day).
R. B.L. Shy"a (for the wedding of twenty couples from Russia).
R. A.Tz.Z.Tz. Shy"a (for the completion of a Sefer Torah in Queens).
And each one announced about the time and place of the occasion.
Afterwards, the Rebbe Shlita began to play "V'Harikoti Lachem Bracha"].
Before proceeding to the explanation of Rashi, we wish to arouse attention to a simple matter,
which ostensibly one should not need to repeat each time due to its great simplicity.
And that is - regarding the matter of the collection:
that when a special day comes, such as
(in our case)
the conclusion of the completion days of Atzeret,
or Erev Rosh Chodesh and Erev Shabbat,
or another day that contains an abundance of blessing and an abundance of joy - one must increase in giving charity,
in addition to the giving every day in any case.
And as mentioned,
one need not mention this every single time,
after having spoken about it so many times,
and the main point - that this is not an independent matter,
one need not come to a wondrous novelty regarding it,
because it is already stated in the Shulchan Aruch,
that in general, every Jew
(after Bar Mitzvah)
must give charity every single day,
and especially before prayer - "Yahiv peruta l'anya v'hadar matzli",
all the more so on a special day,
such as Erev Rosh Chodesh and the like.
And when speaking about Chassidim - one educates and accustoms Chassidic children that immediately upon reaching the age of education, they should give charity,
both boys and girls. And on the contrary - girls have an advantage in giving charity over boys,
as explained in the Gemara that the charity that women give is "mekareva hana'ata"
("she gives a food item to the poor"),
unlike men who give money with which one must first buy food. This indicates the quality and spiritual advantage
(regarding charity)
of women and girls - even small girls who do not yet cook food and the like.
Therefore, it is a simple matter,
that when a special day and an auspicious day comes,
such as the conclusion of the completion days of the time of the giving of our Torah - one must immediately increase in giving charity.
And specifically in this time and in this country in particular - when one has,
without any evil eye,
a livelihood in abundance,
incomparably more than it was in a small town in Russia. Of course from several letters of the old Rebbe where he speaks about the situation of livelihood in those days,
and one need not repeat it. Now one needs to have only a livelihood in abundance,
and may the Almighty add in this again and again,
so that every Jew should have a broad sustenance. And as the precise wording in this - "broad sustenance",
meaning that even though there are three things
(in the language of our Sages of blessed memory *162)
"children, life, and sustenance",
one emphasizes specifically "sustenance" - "broad sustenance" and as the phrase commonly used by all:
"children, life, and broad sustenance, and in all of them broad."
Therefore one now arouses,
that each and every one who has not yet added in the giving of charity on the twelfth of Sivan or has not done it completely - should complete it,
and in a manner of "double for wisdom",
in order to complete the deficiency of the past
(as discussed above (section 9) from the letters of the Rebbe).
And from the aspect of "and you shall love your fellow as yourself" - one should publicize it and convey it to Jews in every place,
so that everyone should add in the giving of charity.
Or on the other hand
(the holy Rebbe of blessed memory smiled,
and said):
Since "your fellow" adds in charity - he wants to be "as yourself",
he imitates the other and also gives charity.
And regarding the practical - there is no difference how it comes - deliverance will come from any place - as long as the poor person or the institution actually receives the charity!
The explanation in Rashi - and with an introduction:
Before this Rashi
(on "any man any man")
there is in this verse a previous Rashi:
Rashi stands on "any man any man, if his wife goes astray",
and explains "what is written above the matter: 'and a man, his holy things shall be his' - if you withhold the priest's gifts, you will be liable to come to him to bring him the sotah."
In simple terms, the first Rashi speaks about the connection of the portion of the sotah to the preceding portion
("and a man, his holy things shall be his");
("ואיש את קדשיו לו יהיו");
however, the second Rashi
("any man any man,
to teach you that she is unfaithful with two etc.")
speaks about the portion itself,
and it has no connection with the first Rashi.
But one can say that in this there is another matter - a continuation of the two explanations in Rashi,
and according to the first Rashi the second Rashi will be sweetened,
as follows.
And the explanation:
All previous times where it says "any man any man",
the simple explanation in this is that it comes to include each and every man,
all types of people,
as above.
But in this verse
("any man any man, if his wife goes astray and commits a trespass against him")
one cannot explain it thus - because:
When one explains that "any man any man" comes to include each and every man,
it indicates that it speaks about a regular occurrence that can happen many times to each and every man,
for which one needs to warn "any man any man".
But regarding "any man any man, if his wife goes astray etc." one cannot explain it thus - because it is explicitly not a regular occurrence that "his wife goes astray",
"that a spirit of folly enters her" *163,
and especially that this came after the husband's jealousy and she did not heed 164 and "there are witnesses to seclusion" * - an entirely irregular occurrence - so how does it fit that the verse should come to include "any man any man" regarding this,
all types of people,
as if it speaks about the most regular thing?!
The difficulty in this becomes even stronger - according to the aforementioned Rashi above that the matter of the sotah comes as a result of "withholding the priest's gifts"
(about which it speaks in the preceding portion):
According to this Rashi it turns out that the "any man any man" regarding the sotah refers to the same "man" about whom it speaks in the preceding portion
(regarding priestly gifts)
who withheld priestly gifts,
because of which the matter of "any man any man, if his wife goes astray" occurs,
"you will be liable to come to him to bring him the sotah."
The question becomes:
In the portion of priestly gifts it says only once "man" - so how can it be that the matter of the sotah,
which comes as a result of withholding priestly gifts,
should be with "any man any man",
with multiple people as it says regarding priestly gifts?!
From where does an additional "man" come here when regarding priestly gifts
(the cause for the sotah)
it says only once "man"?
Furthermore:
The Sotah is indeed even rarer than withholding priestly gifts - because for withholding priestly gifts he can later repent and then the matter of Sotah will not occur,
and so forth.
Now, why does the verse say "Ish Ish" regarding Sotah,
more than the "Ish" who does not give priestly gifts?!
All of this compels Rashi to explain
(according to the simple meaning)
that "Ish Ish" here does not mean to include every single man
(as the usual interpretation of this phrase),
but rather a new teaching - "to teach you that she is unfaithful with two: the Man of War above and the woman below."
That is, that "Ish Ish" here does not come to increase the possible quantity regarding such a situation
(all types of people)
more than regarding priestly gifts,
but rather it comes to teach and increase the defect in quality - that "she is unfaithful with two: the Man of War above and the woman below."
And as proof that the Most High is called "Ish," Rashi brings the verse from the Song of the Sea - "Ish Milchamah." And Rashi is precise to also bring the word "
(Ish)
Milchamah" because this is relevant to the content of his explanation
(in addition to the proof that the Most High is called "Ish")
- because regarding "when his wife goes astray and commits a trespass against Him,"
a transgression,
contrary to the will of Hashem - the Most High is "Ish Milchamah,"
He wages war with her.
And based on this
(precisely Rashi's "Ish Milchamah")
one will understand why the amplification of "Man of War above"
("Ish Ish")
is stated specifically in the portion of Sotah,
and not earlier in the portion of priestly gifts regarding one who "withholds the priest's gifts" - the reason for Sotah.
And with a preface of another question on Rashi:
When one withholds priestly gifts, he apparently commits a transgression,
contrary to the command to give priestly gifts. He therefore deserves a punishment
(as for all transgressions).
It should have stated that he deserves a punishment for this - why does Rashi say here something else,
(that the juxtaposition of the portions comes to teach)
that "if you withhold the priest's gifts, you will be liable to come to him to bring him the Sotah"?
The explanation of this is:
Withholding priestly gifts can be in a manner permitted by the Torah. He can do various things to extricate himself and be exempt from giving priestly gifts. For example:
He does not bring the granary into the house,
in which case it is not Tevel,
consequently he is exempt from giving Terumah and Maaser.
And so forth, various stratagems to extricate himself from giving priestly gifts.
And since this is not a transgression - one cannot give a punishment for it;
און וויבאלד אז דאס איז ניט קיין עבירה - קען מען אויף דעם קיין עונש ניט געבן;
but because this is conduct that is not proper,
indeed in a permitted manner,
but nevertheless he extricated himself from fulfilling a commandment of the Holy One, blessed be He - the Most High says regarding this
(by juxtaposing the portion to the portion of Sotah),
that one conducts Himself with him measure for measure:
"If you withhold the priest's gifts,"
just as he extricated himself from going to the priest to give him Terumah;
פונקט ווי ער האט זיך ארויסגעדרייט פון גיין צום כהן געבן אים תרומה;
if the priest comes to him,
he will give him Terumah,
but he will not run after the priest and so forth - he receives for this measure for measure - "you will be required to come to him to bring him the Sotah."
And based on this it is also understood why "Ish Milchamah" is not stated regarding the one who withholds priestly gifts,
because this can be in a permitted manner,
consequently one cannot say about this that the Most High punishes him and wages war with him;
במילא קען מען אויף דעם ניט זאגן אז דער אויבערשטער איז אים מעניש און האט מלחמה מיט אים;
but rather what then - this brings measure for measure - that eventually the matter of Sotah will occur,
a matter of transgression,
regarding which it is fitting to say "she is unfaithful with two: the Man of War above etc." And then he will have to come to the priest "to bring him the Sotah."
From this there is a lesson in the greatness of the matter of the love of Israel of the Holy One, blessed be He:
Regarding that which Rashi explains that in the portion of Sotah there is the matter of "Ish Milchamah,"
that the Most High wages war with her - the question arises:
Why does the Most High wage war with her - she did this because "a spirit of foolishness entered her."
That is, simply - because of insanity. Now, how is it fitting that the Most High should wage war
(so to speak)
with an insane woman?!
It is understandable that the Supreme One should have nothing to do with her. Because she transgressed a sin - the Supreme One has nothing to do with her,
and He does not continue any reward for her,
"And I will give your rains in their time" - but why does He go to wage war with her?
Granted, when it says "God is a man of war" at the Song of the Sea - the Supreme One went to wage war with Pharaoh and the Egyptians because they wanted to enslave Jews;
בשלמא בא "ה' איש מלחמה" בשירת הים - איז דער אויבערשטער געגאנגען מלחמה האבן מיט פרעה און די מצריים אויף דעם וואס זיי ווילן משעבד זיין אידן;
but why does the Supreme One go to wage war with a sotah?
So the explanation in this is - that this comes from the greatness of the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel:
When the Supreme One sees that among a Jew "a spirit of foolishness has entered into her" and she conducts herself improperly - out of the greatness of His love for Jews,
the Supreme One Himself goes to wage war
("a man of war")
with that evil thing in order to nullify the evil!
As explained in the aforementioned holy epistle with the parable of "a great and awesome king who washes in his honor and himself the excrement of his only son out of his great love."
And in the end the Supreme One brings it about,
and "surely his end is to repent, etc., for no outcast is cast away from Him,"
and not only does the undesirable matter become nullified,
but on the contrary:
an elevation is brought about - "and she shall be cleared and shall be sown with seed" *171,
as Rashi explains:
"If she gave birth in pain she will give birth with ease,
if she gave birth to dark ones she will give birth to light ones."
So instead of the darkness
(darkness)
of the exile
("gave birth to dark ones"),
as the words of our Sages of blessed memory "Achashverosh...
the faces of Israel were darkened in his days like the bottom of a pot" - it becomes transformed into "she will give birth to light ones";
שהושחרו פניהם של ישראל בימיו כשולי קדירה" - ווערט עס נהפך צו "יולדת לבנים";
and instead of the pain of the birth pangs of Mashiach
(birth pangs,
"she gave birth in pain")
- it becomes "she will give birth with ease."
All the more so from this, as it was already in the Egyptian exile - "and for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings,"
that while still being in the Egyptian exile and in an Egyptian house,
the "light" accompanied them
(as explained in the words of our Sages of blessed memory),
all the more so in this last exile,
when "all the deadlines have passed" and one is turning in exile and has nothing to do
(because "all the deadlines have passed")...
Until others delude themselves,
that it is good for them in exile and this is their place, Heaven forbid.
One must know, however - that it cannot be good because the true place of a son is - near his father's table,
and moreover - in a manner that he has "Solomon's feast in its time,"
and as it was earlier
(in the Egyptian exile)
"and for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings,"
all the more so now when "all the deadlines have passed,"
where every moment after "have passed" is worth more than an hour before "have passed,"
as is simple to understand.
And since "all the deadlines have passed,"
one no longer needs to come to the birth pangs of Mashiach
("she gave birth in pain"),
and even not to "a man of war,"
"a great and awesome king who washes in his honor and himself the excrement of his only son out of his great love" - because although this is indeed "out of his great love,"
it is nevertheless concealed kindnesses,
and now there need to be revealed kindnesses,
as his holy honor, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains the change of language in the aforementioned holy epistle,
that earlier it says "and like a merciful, wise, and righteous father who strikes his son"
(because of his great love for his son),
and afterwards he concludes "before his merciful, righteous, and pious father" - because when one mentions "who strikes his son" one cannot say the term "pious,"
revealed kindness.
One must therefore reveal specifically the "pious" in the Supreme One,
and through this the "pious" in every Jew - as is known what the Alter Rebbe said,
that Chassidus is not for a specific party,
but for all Jews,
only that the revelation of Chassidus came through the leaders of the general Chassidus and then the leaders of the particular Chassidus,
not the particular - rather Chassidus Chabad,
and from them it reaches all Jews.
In the manner that the entirety of the matter of the Torah was given through Moshe Rabbeinu
("Torah was commanded to us by Moshe")
and through him it reaches all Jews
("an inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov")
- as it says in today's chapter
(in the first chapter):
"Moshe received the Torah from Sinai,"
and then "and he transmitted it to Yehoshua, and Yehoshua to the elders, etc.,"
until "and they established many students,"
until it reaches all Jews.
What in this very thing is emphasized the concept of love of Israel,
influence and revealed kindness - "Chassid":
First and foremost must be "and raise up many students." But there is the question that the recipient stands on a low level and he can also harm the influencer? To this one says afterwards - "and make a fence for the Torah."
But the order in this is precisely - order in Torah is also Torah - first "raise up many students" and afterwards "make a fence for the Torah":
If one would begin with "make a fence for the Torah",
that one would lock oneself behind a wall,
and I have saved my soul,
and only afterwards would one begin to think about "raise up many students" - it is then understandable what kind of effort he will have to raise up many students!...
Rather the order in this must be - first and foremost "raise up many students",
and afterwards,
in order to protect against undesirable matters,
there must be "make a fence for the Torah."
As the Gemara relates that "on that day they removed the guard of the entrance and gave permission to the students to enter,
for Rabban Gamliel proclaimed and said: any student whose inside is not like his outside shall not enter the study hall,
on that day many benches were added."
That is, that first of all one must raise up many students,
and afterwards,
if the student is not "his inside like his outside",
there must be "make a fence for the Torah."
The matter in the Zohar:
It has already been spoken about once
(and it is already printed)
the explanation of the three verses that the Zohar brings regarding the matter of love
(affection),
and how the words of Rashbi
("we depend on affection")
correspond with the words of Chavakuk that the giving of the Torah is connected with awe
("Hashem, I heard Your report, I was in awe"),
we will not repeat it now.
We will only add an addition and novelty
(which I did not see printed there)
upon what was spoken about previously. The first of the three verses,
"And you shall love Hashem your God" - speaks about love of Hashem by Israel.
The other two verses,
"Because of Hashem's love for you" and "I have loved you, says Hashem" - speak about love of Israel by the Holy One, blessed be He.
And one can say that these three loves correspond to the three pillars upon which the world stands,
Torah, service, and acts of kindness
(in the current chapter)
- love connected with Torah,
love connected with commandments
(and acts of kindness includes all the commandments),
and love connected with prayer
(service):
"And you shall love Hashem your God"
(love of Hashem)
- through the service of prayer,
there is no worship like the worship of love.
And the two verses that speak about love of Israel by the Holy One, blessed be He,
"Because of Hashem's love for you" and "I have loved you, says Hashem",
correspond to love of Israel
(by the Holy One, blessed be He)
from the aspect of their Torah,
and from the aspect of their commandments:
The verse "Because of Hashem's love for you" appears in the portion of Va'etchanan as a reason for the exodus from Egypt:
"Because of Hashem's love for you, Hashem brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt." And the intention of the exodus from Egypt is - the giving of the Torah,
as it is said "when you bring the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain",
the matter of the giving of the Torah to the Jewish people. It follows that "Because of Hashem's love for you" refers to the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel connected with the giving of the Torah
(at the giving of the Torah).
The verse "I have loved you, says Hashem" appears in Malachi - "I have loved you, says Hashem, and you said: with what have You loved us? Was not Esau a brother to Jacob? And I loved Jacob,
and Esau I hated":
Jacob and Esau existed before the giving of the Torah,
therefore this love is not connected with the matter of Torah,
but rather with that which Jacob was specifically distinguished from Esau
(before the giving of the Torah)
- in the matter of fulfillment of the commandments,
for example - the matter of the rods by Jacob,
which was in the manner of tefillin.
But by Esau it was the exact opposite of fulfillment of the commandments - "he committed five transgressions on that day." It follows that "I have loved you, says Hashem" refers to the love for the Jewish people
(Jacob)
from the aspect of fulfillment of the commandments.
And based on this, the connection of love of Israel also with the current chapter is understood
(chapter one)
- where the Mishnah states "the world stands on three things: on Torah, on service, and on acts of kindness" - as discussed above,
that the three loves correspond to Torah, service
(prayer)
and acts of kindness
(the entirety of the matter of commandments),
upon which the world stands,
and also the world endures
(as it is said at the conclusion of the chapter).
And this can also be connected with that which we learn this chapter on the first Shabbat after "the time of the giving of our Torah"
(as discussed above, the matter in this)
- that "we depend on affection" speaks about the giving of the Torah:
With the giving of the Torah, the concept of "the world stands" was revealed
(and "the world endures")
- as the words of our Sages of blessed memory on the verse "the earth feared and was quiet",
that before the giving of the Torah it was "the earth feared" perhaps it would become nullified,
and with the giving of the Torah it became "and was quiet" - "the world stands"
(and endures).
And the giving of the Torah
(which revealed "the world stands")
was connected specifically with the concept of love,
"we depend on affection"
(not like the Days of Awe,
which are primarily connected with awe):
Chassidus explains that the concept of "the Holy One, blessed be He, coerced them [and held] the mountain over them like a vat" was the drawing down of the great love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel,
even in a manner of "a great protest against the Torah" - "because of the love of the L-rd for you"
(which is specifically connected with the giving of the Torah,
as above)
and "I have loved you, says the L-rd".
And "as water reflects a face [back to] a face" - the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel at the giving of the Torah aroused the love of Israel for the Holy One, blessed be He - "and you shall love the L-rd your G-d",
the concept of prayer
(service).
We will also add another concept in Rashi's commentary on our portion upon which we have not focused
(just as we added in the explanation of the Zohar):
At the end of our portion one sees a most perplexing thing - the portion ends with a verse that is seemingly completely out of place:
At the end of the portion it speaks about the offering of the sacrifices of the twelve princes for the dedication of the altar,
and afterwards it concludes with the total sum,
"on the day of his anointing it" and "after his anointing it".
Afterwards comes the portion of Behaalotecha as a continuation of this,
as Rashi explains:
"Why is the portion of the menorah juxtaposed to the portion of the princes?
Because when Aaron saw the dedication of the princes his spirit was weakened that he was not with them in the dedication, etc.,
the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: By your life, yours is greater than theirs, for you light and tend the lamps",
"when you raise up the lamps, etc.".
In between, however, comes a verse - the last verse in our portion - which seemingly has no connection here at all:
"And when Moses came into the Tent of Meeting to speak with Him, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the cover that was upon the Ark of Testimony, from between the two cherubim, and He spoke to him"?!
And since this is a perplexing thing in the plain meaning for a five-year-old studying Scripture - Rashi should have alerted [the reader],
and nevertheless one does not find that Rashi alerts [the reader]!
Furthermore:
Rashi gives an explanation on this verse,
and from his explanation the question is not only not answered,
but it makes the question even stronger!
Rashi explains:
"Two verses that contradict each other, a third came and decided between them,
one verse says 'and the L-rd spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting' and it was outside the curtain,
and one verse says 'and I will speak with you from above the cover',
this one came and decided between them,
Moses came into the Tent of Meeting and there he hears the voice that comes from above the cover".
Without Rashi one could say that this verse has a connection here
(to the matters before it and after it);
(צו די ענינים שלפניו ושלאחריו);
but according to Rashi's explanation it turns out that the only reason why this verse stands here - is in order to decide between two verses that contradict each other - this is entirely incomprehensible:
How does it fit to insert a verse at the end of the portion of Nasso before the portion of Behaalotecha in order to decide between a verse in the book of Exodus and a verse in the book of Leviticus?!
And one can say the explanation in this:
Rashi does not need to alert [the reader] because the five-year-old will understand it himself according to what he learned earlier.
The five-year-old learned earlier that before the establishment of the Tabernacle and the service in the Tabernacle, there had to be the preparation of the dedication of the Tabernacle and Aaron and his sons during the seven days of inauguration in order to accustom them to the service,
as Rashi explains
(in the portion of Tetzaveh):
"And you shall fill their hand - every 'filling of the hand' is an expression of inauguration, when one enters into a matter to be established in it from that day onward, etc.".
And the inauguration had to be regarding all matters of the Tabernacle,
both regarding Aaron and his sons and regarding the parts of the Tabernacle,
including the Tent of Meeting,
and through the dedication of the Tabernacle the Tabernacle became fit for the indwelling of the Divine Presence,
and specifically - for the primary purpose of the Tabernacle,
which is the offering of the sacrifices and "and I will meet with you there and I will speak with you from above the cover, etc.".
That is, also regarding the matter of "and I will meet with you there and speak with you,"
the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, with Moses our teacher,
required preparation and training.
And it can be said that for this even more preparation was required
(like the seven days of consecration).
As is evident from what is stated regarding "and He called to Moses and the Lord spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting"
(the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, with Moses in the Tent of Meeting),
that between one calling and another there were "interruptions,"
"and what purpose did the interruptions serve?
To give Moses respite to reflect between one section and another and between one topic and another."
That is, that even Moses needed to have preparation in order to be a vessel to receive the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, to him in the Tent of Meeting.
It follows,
that the order of the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Moses in the Tent of Meeting
(in the Sanctuary)
actually began only after the appropriate preparations for it — certainly after the seven days of consecration and the erection of the Sanctuary,
and in this very matter — there also needed to be preparation.
And based on this, it can be said,
that the verse
(at the end of our portion)
"and when Moses came into the Tent of Meeting to speak with Him, and he heard the voice speaking to him from above the ark cover etc." is specifically in its place — after the preparation of the offerings of the twelve princes which came after the seven days of consecration and the erection of the Sanctuary
(on the eighth day of the consecration),
therefore immediately after the conclusion of the offerings of the princes the verse states "and when Moses came into the Tent of Meeting to speak with Him etc.,"
because specifically then the order of the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Moses in the Tent of Meeting actually began
(unlike before this, it had not yet occurred).
And based on this, it can be explained why Rashi interprets here that the verse comes to decide between two verses that contradict each other
(in the portion of Terumah and in the portion of Vayikra)
— for seemingly, Rashi already noted this in its place,
when a five-year-old studying Scripture learns it for the first time
(in the portion of Terumah),
and in the portion of Vayikra
(where the contradiction appears)
he does not explain at all — rather, the five-year-old understands that the main place where one must note the contradiction is when the matter
(of the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, with Moses)
actually begins,
because then it is practically relevant how the manner of speech was
(from above the ark cover or in the Tent of Meeting).
And that is at the end of our portion,
as mentioned above — therefore Rashi primarily needs to note it here.
Now we will proceed to the daily study in the book of the Rambam.
And although the main study on the day of Shabbat should be in the inner dimensions of the Torah
(according to the practice of the AriZal and the great ones of the world)
— nevertheless, the study of the revealed aspect becomes the vessel,
"his study is in his hand,"
in order to be able to receive the inner dimensions of the Torah
(in the Garden of Eden,
and in the World to Come,
and a semblance of this — in this world)
[as explained in the discourse of the middle Rebbe (which will soon, with the help of Heaven, be printed) regarding the matter of the giving of the Torah which comes from the source and source of the source until Essence and Being etc.] —
In today's lesson regarding the laws of oaths, the Rambam writes:
"If one swore not to sleep for three days or not to eat anything for seven days and the like, which is a vain oath,
we do not say: let this one stay awake until he suffers and fast until he suffers and he has no strength to bear it, and afterwards he may eat or sleep,
rather, we flog him immediately for a vain oath and he may sleep and eat whenever he wishes"
(in the language of the Gemara — "one who says: an oath that I will not sleep for three days, we flog him and he may sleep immediately").
Regarding this, the Kessef Mishneh brings the opinion of the Ran who argues on the Rambam and distinguishes between sleep and eating:
"The reason that he may sleep immediately is because it is something impossible, for against his will he will sleep within three days, therefore the oath does not take effect upon him at all,
but regarding one who swore...
not to eat for seven days, it is different, for he can uphold his oath etc."
(were it not for the prohibition of one who destroys himself knowingly),
consequently, the law regarding one who swore not to eat for seven days should be
that "we wait for him until he eats and we flog him."
And in explaining the dispute between the Rambam and the Ran, the Rogatchover writes:
"And in truth, the difference between sleep and eating is because the fact that danger does not nullify the prohibition, rather we also permit him to do the prohibited act, therefore it is not a vain oath,
but this applies only to a matter where we need to permit him to act, but a matter that comes on its own
[the matter of sleep]
this does not apply to a permission that we permitted him etc., and therefore it is properly called a vain oath
[according to the opinion of the Ran],
but our teacher, of blessed memory, does not hold this way, rather he holds that through danger the prohibition is entirely nullified,
and therefore it is a vain oath
[also regarding eating]."
There is an inquiry regarding this - in connection with "the time of the giving of our Torah" *213:
When Moses was on Mount Sinai to receive the Torah, "forty days and forty nights he did not eat bread and did not drink water."
[And even according to the opinion that Moses did eat,
as it is said "a man ate the bread of the mighty" - this is "the bread that the ministering angels eat,"
a spiritual eating,
as it is said in the Midrash "he was nourished by the radiance of the Shechinah"].
An inquiry can arise:
If Moses were to make an oath before he ascended the mountain - that he would not eat anything during
(seven days until)
forty days
[because he knew that he would be there forty days and forty nights,
all the more so during the last forty days,
which were like the first forty days,
"and I stood on the mountain like the first days, forty days and forty nights,"
and likewise regarding the middle forty days]
- whether this is a vain oath or not:
On one hand, one can say,
that even though on the mountain "forty days and forty nights he did not eat bread and did not drink water"
(a matter of a miracle),
nevertheless the nature of his body
(during these forty days)
was not fundamentally changed,
and the nature of his body
(that he cannot survive without eating for seven days)
is exactly like that of other human beings
(only in this instance the Almighty performed a miracle so that he could actually live without eating or drinking for forty days).
And based on this - there is also in Moses our teacher a vain oath not to eat for forty days,
just as with all people
(because from his own perspective he cannot survive seven days without eating);
(ווארום ער מצדו קען ניט בלייבן קיים שבעה ימים בלי אכילה);
On the other hand, one can say,
that while on the mountain the nature of his body was entirely changed and elevated completely above nature,
and during the forty days he became different from other human beings in that he could live more than seven days without eating or drinking.
And according to this - it is not a vain oath not to eat for forty days.
Based on this, another inquiry can arise:
If Moses made an oath before he ascended the mountain
(the third time)
- that he would not eat anything for 46 days - whether this is a vain oath,
all the more so than an oath not to eat for seven days,
or whether the oath is indeed valid:
If one says that even though on the mountain "forty days and forty nights he did not eat bread and did not drink water,"
nevertheless the nature of his body
(during these forty days)
was not completely changed,
i.e., he did not entirely depart from the natural order,
and consequently - when he came down from the mountain, the forty days during which he did not eat or drink are combined with the subsequent days during which he would not eat,
i.e., that he did not eat or drink for a period of forty days,
which is not within the capacity of a flesh and blood being - consequently it is a vain oath;
וואס דאס איז ניט בגדר א בשר ודם - במילא איז דאס א שבועת שוא;
If, however, one learns,
that when Moses was on the mountain he was entirely changed and elevated completely above nature - then according to this the days on the mountain are not counted and are not combined with the subsequent days,
and when Moses came down from the mountain he was like a new entity,
consequently he could still go without eating for six days
(a little less than seven days)
- consequently the oath is valid.
The same inquiry can apply regarding Elijah the prophet - with whom it was "and he ate and drank and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights."
But regarding Elijah the prophet one can say that he did not know beforehand how many days he would go "in the strength of that food,"
whether six days,
seven days,
or forty days
(not like with Moses who knew in advance,
as above).
But also here one can raise the inquiry - if Elijah the prophet made an oath not to eat, then as long as he had vessels,
he poured and poured!
All the more so when the vessel for this is "my cup is full,"
a cup that holds 221 log
(larger than the vessel that Elisha had).
And especially according to what is explained in various places that 221
(log)
is the letters of "long,"
the aspect of Arich,
which is above the order of the chain of descent.
And after this, the physical feast of the World to Come will be; they will come to the time of "the World to Come, in which there is no eating and no drinking,"
which refers to the World of Resurrection,
souls in bodies
(according to the opinion of the Ramban)
[contrary to the opinion of the Rambam that this refers to the Garden of Eden,
the World of Souls. Regarding which the question is: what does it inform us that in the World of Souls (without bodies) there is no eating and no drinking?],
in the manner of "he did not eat and he did not drink" of Moses our teacher on the mountain
(as explained in the Mishneh Torah).
And even according to the opinion
(mentioned above)
that "bread of the mighty did man eat,"
Moses our teacher — this is a matter of enjoying the radiance of the Divine Presence
(as above, section 33),
in the manner of the continuation of the statement of our Rabbis of blessed memory: "The World to Come has no eating and no drinking, etc., but the righteous sit with their crowns on their heads and enjoy the radiance of the Divine Presence."
And may it be His will that each one should perform the service of "when you raise up the lamps"
(as we will soon read),
to kindle the lamp of the soul of the Jewish people,
"until the flame rises by itself."
And even if it is a "body that does not ascend with the light of the soul,"
which then "they beat it" — now this is done not through beating in its simple sense
(hidden acts of kindness),
but rather one fulfills it through "beating" in the study of Torah,
in the manner of what is said in the Zohar in explanation of "with hard labor, with clay and with bricks" — "with hard labor, this is a difficulty,
with clay, this is a fortiori reasoning, etc.,"
and "crushing labor,"
a change from one's habit
(women's work for men),
that he studies Torah with labor and toil until a change from his habit.
But regarding physicality and the simplicity of matters — the Most High gives expansion in all matters,
"from His full, open, holy, and wide hand,"
including also "overflowing," as it is stated in the Siddur of the Baal Shem Tov.
According to the ruling of the Rambam *247 that one gives a Jew all physical rewards so that he can study Torah with peace of mind and peace of body.
And even though the Mishnah says "whoever fulfills the Torah out of poverty will ultimately fulfill it out of wealth" — this is also dependent upon the Jew:
he can be "one who fulfills the Torah out of poverty,"
not poverty in its simple sense,
but rather through "there is no poor except in knowledge" — through the fact that he feels that however much Torah he knows,
he is in the category of poverty relative to how much he can still know — then "he will ultimately fulfill it out of wealth,"
there is no rich except in knowledge,
a wealth of knowledge, understanding, and comprehension in Torah.
That is, not like one who considers himself a great scholar and a dialectician and a profound thinker, etc. — and with him it is inconceivable that he should receive an additional knowledge in Torah:
if he receives many knowledges in Torah — how good and how pleasant,
if he receives one knowledge — it is also good,
and if he receives nothing at all — it is still good for him,
for he is already a great man in any case!
Rather, "whoever fulfills the Torah out of poverty" means,
that however much he can learn — he feels that he is poor relative to what can still come to him,
and therefore he strives with all his might to increase in the study of Torah. And then he has the promise that "he will ultimately fulfill it out of wealth,"
a true wealth in Torah.
And this is the explanation of the statement of our Rabbis of blessed memory: "One who learns from his fellow a single chapter, or a single law, or a single verse, or a single statement, or even a single letter — must treat him with honor, etc." And as it is brought in the Gemara: "Even if he enlightened my eyes only in one Mishnah, this is his teacher, etc.,
such as Rav Sachora who explained to me 'zohama listron.'"
He can be a rich man in Torah,
a great scholar — but he does not feel that when an additional knowledge comes to him it is inconceivable,
rather when he learns from his fellow a "single Mishnah,"
"even a single letter,"
it is to such an extent an addition for him
(and to such an extent he feels himself poor in relation to that single letter)
that "he must treat him with honor"!
For he feels that this "single letter" is a "single letter" in Torah,
and every letter in Torah is a matter of the greatest magnitude,
and from it he can learn and from it a great wealth in Torah can come to him!
As this is in the aforementioned example in the Gemara — "such as Rav Sachora who explained to me 'zohama listron,'"
"Even if he learned from his teacher only this matter alone, he is considered his teacher thereby,"
and according to Rashi's commentary:
"It is taught in the Order of Purities
('zohama listron'),
and I did not know what vessel it is, and he taught me that it is a large ladle with which they remove the scum of the pot and the cauldron to the sides."
Even though there is not so much novelty in it, he is called his teacher because he studied it with him;
דאע"פ וואס "אין בו כ"כ דבר חידוש" 255 ווערט ער אנגערופן רבו ווייל ער האט דאס מיט אים געלערנט;
And from this small matter in Torah
(apparently)
- "zohama listron" - he learns a great wealth in Torah and in the service of G-d:
When he finds himself in a place in the world where there is "zohama" - he might think that he will flee to the chambers of holiness,
to the synagogue and study hall and the like,
and the place where there is "zohama" he will leave for the One Above,
for this is indeed the world of the Holy One, blessed be He!
Regarding this, he has the general directive from what his teacher taught him the explanation of "zohama listron" - that the Holy One, blessed be He, desired to have a dwelling place in the lower realms,
and this must be a clean dwelling
(as per the precise wording of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe *256),
and this mission was given to every Jew together with the powers to carry it out.
Consequently,
when a Jew finds himself in a specific place in the world through Divine Providence - he cannot cry out that when he sees "zohama" in a part of the world of the Holy One, blessed be He, he will flee to another place in the world to make there a "dwelling place for Him, blessed be He,"
and the "dwelling" that is unclean
(where there is zohama)
he will leave for the One Above, heaven forfend - rather, he must know that he is a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation"
[as the Gemara says regarding "the one who says 'Vayechulu' on Friday evening],
and he has a duty and responsibility and together with this a merit to take a "zohama listron,"
"a large ladle with which one removes the scum of the pot and cauldron to the sides" - and to cast out the zohama and make the place a clean dwelling for the Holy One, blessed be He!
And it is correct that because of this one matter - "zohama listron" - his soul descended down here,
consequently it is understood that however much the Jew possesses,
even if he is a great wealthy person - he still stands in the aspect of a poor person regarding the fulfillment of his mission and the descent of his soul into the world!
Like the wondrous Torah of the Baal Shem Tov
(transmitted by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe)
- that a soul comes down below and lives seventy eighty years in order to do a Jew a favor one time!
That is, he can be a person who laid tefillin every single day,
and studied Torah and fulfilled commandments,
up to a complete righteous person and a hidden righteous person
(as in the story connected with the aforementioned Torah)
- nevertheless, he has not accomplished the purpose of the descent of his soul below until he does the Jew a favor one time!!
[Afterwards there are those who will come and say,
that this Torah is only in a list,
and who knows whether my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, validated it or even saw it...].
And this is the unique role of a rabbi in Israel - as it states in Tanna Devei Eliyahu,
that the Great Sanhedrin had upon themselves the role "to tie iron belts around their waists and to lift their garments above their knees and to go around all the cities of Israel etc. in all places of Israel and to teach Israel etc."
That is, even though the place of the Great Sanhedrin was in the Chamber of Hewn Stone,
and they were great people of lineage,
and among all the rabbis in Israel they were the most important
(who were elevated from the Lesser Sanhedrin etc.)
- nevertheless, Eliyahu says
(Tanna Devei Eliyahu),
that their role and responsibility is to teach Jews how one must conduct oneself,
and when it is necessary - they must gird themselves with "iron belts around their waists and lift their garments above their knees and go around all the cities of Israel etc. and teach Israel etc."!
From this it is understood a fortiori and all the more so regarding the role of rabbis nowadays regarding instructing Jews how one must conduct oneself. And to such an extent that he must go out to seek a Jew who needs a directive and instruction on how he should conduct himself!
If the rabbi is meritorious and the Jewish man and Jewish woman come to him with a question - it is good;
אויב דער רב איז זוכה און דער איד און אידענע קומען צו אים מיט א שאלה - איז גוט;
but if they do not come to him - which is the situation today regarding many of Israel - the rabbi must gird himself and go around the cities of Israel and teach Israel.
And not like those who think,
that when he will go to that one - specifically if they will provide him with an automobile or an airplane. And specifically to travel first class,
and when he arrives,
there should be "fifty men running before him" *261 who are proclaiming and announcing that the rabbi, the gaon, so-and-so son of so-and-so has arrived,
because specifically this is the honor of the Torah and the honor of the rabbinate - teaches him the Tanna of the school of Elijah,
that even the Great Sanhedrin,
the most distinguished rabbis who sat in the Chamber of Hewn Stone - had an obligation and responsibility to go around to all the cities of Israel,
to the most distant places,
even if it requires "to tie iron bands around their waists and to lift their garments above their knees"!
All the more so when it concerns rabbis nowadays,
they have the obligation and responsibility to go to their householders and to Jews in every place and place and show them how one must conduct oneself.
And even if it concerns a distant place - it is not the interpretation,
that then one must remain in his place,
rather one seeks advice for this,
one girds oneself,
with "iron bands around their waists and to lift their garments above their knees" and the like,
which will protect that the garments of the rabbi should remain whole,
because if not they will tear and he will have to remain stuck in the middle of the road,
because a rabbi may not go naked,
and even not with torn garments,
as the law that for a rabbi there must be "for honor and for glory" before his householders - the advice for this is,
not to go back home,
rather to put on "iron bands etc." and the like which will protect that he should be able to arrive at the distant place and there teach Jews!
From this one has the lesson regarding the role of rabbis in this generation of ours - about which it is now a fitting time to mention,
because there are here many rabbis who have arrived here for the holiday of Shavuot,
both rabbis from the Holy Land,
and also rabbis from other places.
As was discussed,
that in Lubavitch they used to call the holiday of Shavuot by the name "the holiday of the Matzot",
because then the rabbis used to travel to Lubavitch,
because during the seven days of Passover and Sukkot they could not come due to the multitude of questions and matters of livelihood connected with the days of the holiday etc.
And although who can compare to the capital city of Lubavitch - but we are found within the four cubits and the synagogue and the study hall of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the president of our generation,
and where he went, with him went the Divine Presence and holiness *263,
up to this very place,
the place where he performed his service during the last ten years of his life and vitality in this world!
And especially when one stands on the second of Sivan,
that between the second and the fifteenth of Sivan they arrested His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and his imprisonment began - which afterwards was revealed that this was in the category of hidden kindnesses,
and through this there came with greater emphasis and greater strength the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
until this time and place.
And now one can no longer have hidden kindnesses - Heaven forbid that it should be so,
and one does not agree to this,
rather one must have specifically revealed kindnesses,
"the good for us."
Which is especially accomplished through the rabbis - whose role is to educate and influence in a manner of revealed kindnesses to all Jews.
And especially Chassidic rabbis,
who rule according to the rulings of the old Rebbe,
the middle Rebbe and the Tzemach Tzedek.
The rabbis who are found here now must know their responsibility - and they must about this arouse all the other rabbis - about their mission and special role to teach and show Jews in every place and place how one must conduct oneself according to the instruction of the Torah,
and this means,
not only when the Jewish man or Jewish woman comes to go to the rabbi with a question,
rather even when the Jew does not come to him to go,
the rabbi must go to him and influence him.
And in particular when it speaks about rabbis of our generation, this especially - they must know their unique role - being rabbis of the heels of Mashiach,
a unique generation both in that now there has been added a double and multiplied darkness,
consequently the rabbis have more to protect,
and also in that - and this is also the main point - that in our generation there has been added an abundance of Torah and goodness and holiness that was not in previous generations.
And simply it means:
every rabbi in Israel has the unique role to be the guide of his householders and householders' wives,
and to show them how to conduct themselves according to the instructions of the Torah.
And this speaks about all Jews - men, women, and children:
to men and boys in their Torah and commandments,
and to women in their commandments,
first and foremost - the three commandments unique to them whose acronym is "the grace":
lighting candles of the holy Shabbat,
challah - the kashrut of eating and drinking,
and niddah - family purity.
And in particular since the rabbi has a rebbetzin - she must together with the rabbi,
or the rabbi together with his rebbetzin
(or by appointing other women),
especially work with the women and daughters of Israel.
And especially - there must be an emphasis on doing in the matter of the education of the children of Israel,
"Train the youth according to his way, even when he grows old he will not depart from it",
because this becomes a foundation for all subsequent generations.
And the role of the rabbi is not only regarding Jews who are observers of Torah and commandments,
but to all Jews - because every Jew is a "desirable land" *264 which possesses precious stones and pearls
(according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov),
and it is a certain thing that in the end he will do repentance, for no rejected one is rejected from Him *265,
and then there will be added an elevation:
intentional sins become for him like merits,
a new type of merits.
A rabbi has the role to cleanse the "impurity" and to reveal the "desirable land" in every Jew,
as discussed above.
Every thing must have a suitable preparation. And especially with a physical matter,
as is known from what is said in the discourses of the Ran,
that through connecting a matter with a physical thing it gives power that it should have a permanence in the physicality of the world.
Therefore it is a proper thing,
that the rabbis who are here should now say "L'Chaim" on a physical thing - a cup of wine,
"which gladdens God and men",
in this synagogue and study hall of the prince of our generation.
And if one wants more - one can go after Shabbat to the "secretariat" and from there take a drink.
And together with this one should also sing melodies of joy - "We want Mashiach now",
"Nyet nyet nikavo" and "He will build the Holy Temple".
And after this beginning in a gathering in this place - each rabbi should make a gathering in his own place,
and there speak words of awakening,
including - the inner dimensions of the Torah,
and matters relating to actual practice - setting fixed times for Torah,
the service of prayer
("He gives:
a coin to a pauper and then prays"),
and charity,
etc.
And may it be His will that this should add more strength to the rabbis in carrying out their holy role to influence and to be guides for Jews in every place.
And especially since one stands within the four cubits of the prince of our generation,
and in this time,
in continuation of the time of the giving of our Torah,
And in particular since to each rabbi there also comes the Yud - the matter of self-nullification - then it becomes "Rabbi" from "Rav",
as explained in many places in the elucidation of the matter "Every Rav in Babylon and every Rabbi in the Land of Israel".
And this should further hasten the true and complete redemption,
so that while still standing on this day,
even before the reading of Parshat Beha'alotcha - Mashiach our righteousness comes,
and "In the future, synagogues and study halls in Babylon - and in all places outside the land - will be established in the Land of Israel",
"A land which the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year",
and especially in the synagogues and study halls,
in the true and complete redemption through Mashiach our righteousness,
literally speedily in our days and literally quickly in our time,
with joy and a good heart.
[His Holiness the Rebbe Shlita began to sing "We want Mashiach now".
Afterwards they sang "Nyet nyet nikavo".
(The prayer leader Shy"a began "Yehi ratzon etc.") "He will build the Holy Temple etc.".
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing].
