English translation 1
In all Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh there is a general concept and common point:
In all Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh there is a general concept and common point:
Shabbos Mevarchim is distinguished from the other Shabbosos of the year by that, in addition to that which Shabbos is blessed from the six or seven days of the week,
Hashem has invested powers in the auspicious day of Shabbos Mevarchim that it should be able to bless an entire month.
Therefore there is the institution of our Rabbis, our Nesi'im,
as my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, established, publicized, and requested that it be instituted throughout all the dispersions of Israel,
that on every Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh, Jews should gather together and hold a farbrengen2,
where words of Torah and words of awakening, founded on Ahavas Yisrael and Ahavas HaTorah and all good matters, should be spoken.
And then — at the time when Jews gather together — the "note that descended from Heaven" is known
(as the Alter Rebbe transmitted3)
regarding the greatness of the matter that a Chassidic farbrengen accomplishes,
and that it brings in a blessing of success in all the matters of those participating in the farbrengen,
beginning with success in the thing that causes this — the farbrengen itself,
which, being the cause
(of all these matters of success that come about through the farbrengen)
certainly takes the first portion — that the farbrengen itself should be with success,
and all the matters and good resolutions in general that are accepted at that farbrengen should be with success,
and particularly in the special matters of the farbrengen.
In addition to this general concept in every Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh,
it is understood that each Shabbos Mevarchim also has within itself a special concept corresponding to the special concept and special service of each and every month.
All the more so from that which "each day does its work"4,
certainly each and every month has within itself a multitude of matters that distinguish it from the other months. And this is not necessarily in a manner of higher and lower,
that the matters in one month are higher than the matters in another month,
but rather this is in a manner that each month has its own special matters,
and this one has that which that one does not, and that one has that which this one does not,
and this does not diminish from the other months at all.
And just as each and every month does its work,
so too each Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh has its own special service
(distinguished from all other Shabbosos Mevarchim),
corresponding to the special service of the month that this Shabbos Mevarchim blesses.
That is, even though Shabbos in general is "sanctified and established"5,
but when it comes to Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh,
where the concept of Rosh Chodesh is connected with the service of man — "Israel sanctified the times"6,
its determination depends on the Beis Din,
to the extent that "you, even if you are unintentional, even if you are intentional, even if you are mistaken"7 — it is understood that Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh also has a connection with the service of man.
And the concept of Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh
(both the general concept and the special concept of this Shabbos Mevarchim)
is not only for select individuals,
but for every single one of Israel, male and female. As is evident from the very institution of Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh:
The reason why it was instituted that Birkas HaChodesh should be on the Shabbos before Rosh Chodesh
(Shabbos Mevarchim)
— for ostensibly the determination of Rosh Chodesh depends on
(the night or day when it was seen)
the molad of the moon,
which, for the most part, is not on that Shabbos before Rosh Chodesh — because now the determination of the months is according to the calculation. Consequently, one knows in advance when Rosh Chodesh will be;
וואס ע"פ רוב איז דאס ניט אין דעם שבת שלפני ראש חודש - ווייל איצטער איז קביעות החדשים ע"פ החשבון. במילא ווייסט מען אין פאראויס ווען עס וועט זיין ראש חודש;
and in order that all Jews should know when it is Rosh Chodesh so that they should know when to observe all the prayers, laws, and customs connected with Rosh Chodesh — which during the weekdays one might forget about due to the distractions — therefore one announces about it at a time of gathering,
on the Shabbos day before Rosh Chodesh,
when all Jews
(from villages,
cities and towns, etc.)
gather together in the synagogue8
[because Shabbos is even more a time of gathering than Monday and Thursday].
One sees from this that Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh,
including also the special concept of this Shabbos Mevarchim HaChodesh,
pertains to every single one of Israel, male and female.
And thereby the concept of gathering — Ahavas Yisrael and Achdus Yisrael — is further emphasized,
which adds even more to the blessings of success in all the matters connected with Shabbos Mevarchim,
as above.
In order to know what is the special aspect of this Rosh Chodesh – Rosh Chodesh Shevat,
and consequently,
in this Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh – one looks first and foremost in the Written Torah,
which even the Sadducees admit to,
and this is relevant
(be it with the distinction)
also to a child of five years for Scripture,
who has not yet reached a child of ten for Mishnah and a child of fifteen for Gemara, etc.
We find that the full verse states: "In the eleventh month, on the first day of the month"9
(Rosh Chodesh Shevat)
Moshe said to the Jewish people "Mishneh Torah",
and in the manner of "He explained this Torah – he interpreted it to them in seventy languages."10
And the explanation of this:
With this, Moshe prepared the Jewish people for the time, situation, and condition when they would need to come into contact with seventy languages in order to carry out their service in the world.
As long as the Jewish people were in the desert,
above the world,
they did not need to come into contact with the nations of the world, and
(consequently also not)
with seventy languages.
But after this,
when the Jewish people would enter the world,
they would indeed have to deal also with other lands where the seventy nations are found, and they would need to come into contact with seventy languages.
And not only because of the matter of "we were exiled from our land"11,
but also before the time of exile, the Jewish people were in the lands of the nations as part of an order in the service of Hashem.
As this was regarding the tribe of Zevulun,
who "Zevulun shall dwell at the shore of the seas"12,
because their order of service was to travel around the entire world and there conduct business in the manner of "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven"13 and "in all your ways know Him"14 – as an order in the service of Hashem.
And coming into the lands of the nations, they encountered the gentiles who lived there,
and they had to trade with the gentiles and influence them by speaking with the gentiles about the seven Noahide commandments,
consequently they needed to know the seventy languages,
and how the Torah is explained in seventy languages.
And in addition, they also encountered Jewish people who lived outside the Land – as is known
(and as is understood from several stories of our Sages of blessed memory)
that even during the time of the Temple there were Jewish people who were settled in distant lands,
outside the Land of Israel. During the time of the Second Temple there were many Jewish people who lived outside the Land;
חוץ פון ארץ ישראל. בזמן בית שני זיינען געווען א ריבוי אידן וואס האבן געלעבט אין חוץ לארץ;
and even during the time of the First Temple it is understood from several stories of our Sages of blessed memory that there were Jewish people outside the Land
(for whatever reasons).
It follows that the Jewish people then needed to have knowledge of the seventy languages.
And therefore Moshe prepared them and prepared the Jewish people for this,
while still in the desert – through the fact that
(on Rosh Chodesh Shevat)
"Moshe began to explain this Torah – he interpreted it to them in seventy languages." For this is the aspect of a faithful shepherd,
that "just as below he stands and serves, so too above he stands and serves"15 on high16,
and he will not abandon the flock of his pasture17,
therefore Moshe did all that depended on him,
while still being a soul in a body in this physical world,
in order to prepare and ready the Jewish people for the matters they would need in the generations after this,
including the matter of "he explained this Torah,
he interpreted it to them in seventy languages."
This is similar to what we find regarding the cities of refuge – that while still in the desert, "then Moshe set apart three cities on the other side of the Jordan" as cities of refuge18,
"even though they do not provide refuge until those in the land of Canaan are set apart"19,
and Moshe already knew then that "you shall not cross over there"20,
he set apart the cities of refuge,
because he did all that depended on him as a prince in Israel to prepare the Jewish people for the situation that would be later.
From this we see the special aspect that exists on Rosh Chodesh Shevat
(as is explicit in the Written Torah)
– that then Moshe said "Mishneh Torah",
and "Moshe began to explain this Torah,
he interpreted it to them in seventy languages."
And on Rosh Chodesh Shevat, year after year, "these days are remembered and fulfilled"*20,
according to the explanation of the AriZal on this21,
that the matters that occurred on Rosh Chodesh Shevat the first time are repeated.
And from this is also understood the special aspect of Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Shevat – which blesses and gives powers so that one can perform the service of Rosh Chodesh Shevat,
"explain this Torah."
What the general lesson from this is—that just as "Moshe began to explain this Torah,
he interpreted it to them in seventy languages" on Rosh Chodesh Shevat,
so too must it be with every Jew22,
because every Jew has within himself a spark of Moshe Rabbeinu,
and this is not merely a spark that helps him get by,
but it affects him in all aspects of his service,
as explained in Tanya23,
that because every Jew has the spark of Moshe within him—for him "fear is a small matter"24,
"as it is written25 'And now, Israel, what does Hashem your G-d ask of you but to fear Hashem your G-d, to walk in all His ways and to love Him etc., to keep the commandments of Hashem,'"
with all the details enumerated in the verse.
In addition to this special matter mentioned above in the month of Shevat that is stated in the Written Torah
("he explained this Torah")
—there is another matter in the month of Shevat that was added in our generation:
On the tenth of it,
"the tenth shall be holy"26,
was the hillula of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Nasi of our generation,
when "all the toil of man that his soul toiled in his life"27 is revealed and is "the One who works salvations in the midst of the earth"28.
And since this is a matter that was added in our generation, which is more relevant to our generation and to ourselves—it is with more storm,
even though this is a matter that was added thousands of years later than the matter of "he explained this Torah" on Rosh Chodesh Shevat.
This is similar to what is explained in the commentaries on the prayer29 regarding the text of the prayer "Our G-d and G-d of our fathers," explaining the reason why we precede "Our G-d" before "G-d of our fathers," even though in chronological order "G-d of our fathers" came first and then "Our G-d,"
and especially since in prayer we seek to emphasize the merit of the fathers because that would accomplish more—so why do we precede "Our G-d" before "G-d of our fathers"? They explain,
that we begin with "Our G-d" because it is more relevant to us.
However, the simple answer is not understood:
Since in prayer it is relevant to accomplish with the prayer,
and with the merit of the fathers one can accomplish more than with one's own merit—what difference does it make what is more relevant to us?!
From this very point the explanation is understood,
because "Our G-d" is more relevant to us,
therefore it evokes a loftier prayer with greater storm and with more "service before the Master"30,
consequently, it indeed accomplishes more!
And similar to this is the explanation of the Rebbe Maharash
(as the Rebbe, my father-in-law, related31)
regarding a wondrous matter,
that in the Gemara we find a dispute of Tannaim and Amoraim regarding all the claims that a half-freed maidservant can claim,
that she can claim in this way and in that way etc.
That is, in order to grasp all these claims of a half-freed maidservant, one must attain the level of a Tanna or a great Tanna,
an Amora or a great Amora,
who studies Torah even in a manner of self-sacrifice. So how can it be said that a half-freed maidservant,
who has not yet been completely freed,
consequently she does not have the status of a Jewish daughter—can grasp this?!
The explanation of this is—because it is relevant to herself,
and when a matter is relevant to oneself,
one can grasp a rationale that ordinarily would have required a Tanna and Amora who studies Torah in a manner of self-sacrifice!
Thus it is also understood regarding the text of the prayer "Our G-d and G-d of our fathers,"
that we begin specifically with "Our G-d,"
because since it is relevant to him himself,
it is a prayer with more storm,
and with more self-nullification "as a servant before the Master"30,
until "to Him and not to His attributes"32,
consequently it accomplishes more and more deeply;
במילא פועל'ט עס מערער און טיפער;
and only afterwards does one say "G-d of our fathers"
(and in this very matter one proceeds in order—"Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob").
From this it is also understood regarding our matter:
Even though the matter of "he explained this Torah" on Rosh Chodesh Shevat occurred thousands of years before the hillula on the tenth of Shevat,
and it is a matter that was done by Moshe Rabbeinu,
and the recitation of Mishneh Torah,
which Mishneh Torah means that it also includes the first four books,
and Rosh Chodesh Shevat in every year occurs before the tenth of Shevat,
and in addition to this—Rosh Chodesh Shevat includes all the days of the month,
also the tenth of Shevat,
consequently it turns out that Rosh Chodesh Shevat has both advantages,
both the advantage of Rosh Chodesh Shevat and the advantage of the tenth of Shevat—
Nevertheless,
since the Tenth of Shevat that occurred in our generation is more relevant to us,
it is with more storm and it stirs more.
And from this is also understood the elevation of this Shabbat Mevarchim Shevat — which has the powers to bless and give strength to the service in Rosh Chodesh Shevat and throughout the month of Shevat,
including the tenth which shall be holy.
The lesson from this:
Standing on Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh and the month of Shevat, which blesses the Rosh Chodesh and the entire month,
including the tenth thereof — one must know the preciousness of this Shabbat and of the farbrengen on this Shabbat,
in which were invested special powers to bless and draw down powers to perform the service in Rosh Chodesh Shevat and throughout the month of Shevat,
the service of "explain this Torah" and the service connected with the Tenth of Shevat,
Thus from this is understood the matters that can be accomplished on this Shabbat itself
[as discussed above that although Shabbat is "sanctified and established,"
it is also connected with the service of man,
for it is Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh,
for "Israel sanctified the festivals"],
for the Shabbat itself blesses and gives strength to every Jew.
Consequently, one must certainly utilize the arousal of the farbrengen on this Shabbat,
by utilizing every moment of this Shabbat
(for every moment is precious and blesses and gives strength to each one)
to accept good resolutions regarding actual deed
(for the deed is the main thing)
in the matters connected with the month of Shevat,
beginning with oneself — "and from your flesh do not hide"33,
and also regarding other Jews,
in the matters connected with the month of Shevat,
Beginning from Rosh Chodesh Shevat — the service of "explain this Torah,
in seventy languages he explained it to them,"
which includes the entire Torah,
And primarily
(which is especially relevant in our generation)
— which is also connected with the service of "explain this Torah" — the service that the Baal HaHillula of the Tenth of Shevat intended — the matter of "your springs shall spread forth outward,"
and the matter of "immediately to repentance, immediately to redemption"34,
which in truth are both matters one and the same,
for when your springs spread forth outward, "the Master has come," the King Messiah35,
in the true and complete redemption, speedily in our actual time.
In this matter of Shabbat Mevarchim Shevat itself, it occurs in this year that it is on Shabbat Parshat Shemot,
and it is known the teaching of the Alter Rebbe36 that one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion.
In Parshat Shemot there are a multitude of matters ad infinitum.
And all the more so from this, that even in one verse of the Torah there are a multitude of matters,
certainly in an entire portion.
But together with this,
as discussed many times,
the entire portion is included in the name of the portion,
according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov37 that the name by which it is called in the Holy Tongue is the life-force and content of the thing.
That is:
The name of the portion is simply after one of the first words of the portion,
as in our case:
"Shemot" is the second word of the portion,
after the word "Ve'eleh." And the reason why it is not called after the first word,
is because there are other portions that begin with the same word
(like "Eleh toldot Noach,"
"Ve'eleh toldot Yitzchak"),
therefore they choose the first distinct word of the portion;
במילא קלייבט מען אויס דעם ערשטן אויסגעטיילטן ווארט פון דער פרשה;
And although sometimes we find,
as in Parshat Va'eira,
that the name of the portion is after a word that appears several words into the portion — there too it can be explained that this is the first distinct word.
Nevertheless,
since everything is by Divine Providence,
all the more so a name of a portion in the Torah — one must say that the portion is called by this name with Divine Providence,
because the name expresses the content and life-force of the entire portion38.
Thus it is also understood regarding Parshat Shemot — that the name of the portion,
"Shemot,"
expresses the content and life-force of the entire portion.
One must understand the connection of the content of Parshat Shemot with the name of the portion "Shemot" which simply means "names,"
for at first glance one does not see a connection between them:
The content of the entire Parshat Shemot is — the exile and bondage of Egypt.
The descent into Egypt begins already at the end of the Book of Bereishit
(as it is written39 "we went down, we went down"),
but the actual exile and bondage begins in Parshat Shemot.
Beginning immediately from the start of the parshah - "And Yosef died, and all his brothers, and all that generation"40,
that specifically after this the exile and enslavement began,
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said41
(as Rashi brings down in his commentary on the Torah42)
"As long as one of those who descended to Egypt was alive, the Egyptians did not enslave Israel."
Only in order to explain how Jews came to be in Egypt at all when their place is in the land of Canaan
(in the land of his father's sojournings)
- the parshah begins with the introduction that "And these are the names of the children of Israel coming to Egypt etc.";
- הויבט זיך אן די פרשה מיט דער הקדמה אז "ואלה שמות בני ישראל הבאים מצרימה וגו'";
but this is only as an introduction to that which is discussed afterwards regarding the actual exile and enslavement of Egypt,
which began after "And Yosef died, and all his brothers etc."
And so too in the continuation of the parshah, it always discusses the enslavement in exile. And further on in the parshah,
the more the difficulty of the enslavement increases. Until one comes close to the end of the parshah where Pharaoh adds to the difficulty of the enslavement even regarding the labor "with rigor" "with mortar and bricks" which is discussed at the beginning of the parshah43 - that "You shall no longer give straw to the people to make bricks as before; let them go and gather straw for themselves"44. Until one comes to the end of the parshah where Moshe complains to the Most High "Why have You done evil to this people? Why have You sent me?"45,
and it is understood that since the attribute of Moshe is the attribute of truth,
so indeed was the truth that "You have done evil to this people."
One sees from this that the entire content of the parshah is - only the exile and enslavement of Egypt.
And regarding the beginning of the ascent and redemption from Egypt,
including even the answer to Moshe regarding his complaint "Why have You done evil etc.",
it begins to be discussed only in Parshat Va'eira,
and its conclusion - in Parshat Bo;
וסיומה - בפ' בא;
but in Parshat Shemot it discusses only descent and exile.
One must understand:
What connection does the name of the parshah "Shemot"
(which must give the content and vitality of the parshah)
have with the content of the parshah regarding the exile and enslavement of Egypt?!
The explanation of this is:
In the connection of a name
("Shemot")
to the person who bears the name - there is a thing and its opposite46:
On one side one sees,
that the name is merely an external matter of the person47,
and therefore from a name one cannot have any concept of the essence of the person who is called by that name. As Chassidus48 gives the proof for this:
There are several people with the same name Reuven
(for example),
even though in their essence they can be opposite one from the other,
one can be rich,
one poor,
and so too regarding wealth of intellect:
one is wise,
one is not wise,
etc.
That is, that in the name of the person, the essence of the person stands in concealment and exile,
because in the name one sees entirely not what kind of essence of person he is.
From the second side, however,
it is stated in the books49 that the name of a person has a connection to the very essence of the person,
the life-force of the soul is drawn into the body through the letters of the name
(which connects the soul with the body),
according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that his name which is called to him in the Holy Tongue brings him into being, enlivens him, and sustains him. Until Chassidus50 gives the proof for this,
that when someone is in a faint, heaven forbid - which means that the life-force of the soul is in a state of concealment and withdrawal from the powers of the body - one awakens him by whispering his name in his ear,
which is a proof that the name touches the very life-force of the soul,
and therefore it has the power to draw the life-force back into the powers of the body.
And the simple difference between these two extremes in a name is - whether one speaks of the externality of the matter of the name or the inwardness of the matter of the name:
The first matter in a name
(that it is an external matter which conceals the essence of the person)
is as the matter of the name is simply and revealed;
איז ווי דער ענין השם איז בפשטות ובגלוי;
but the second matter
(that a name reveals the very essence of the person)
is not seen openly in the name,
rather it is a matter that exists in the name in inwardness.
And therefore there is also the difference,
that regarding the first matter in a name one does not need proofs,
because everyone sees it openly,
that from the name one cannot know
(in simple matters)
the essence of the person;
מהות האדם;
but in order to know the second matter in a name one must arrive at that which is stated in the books,
because by oneself one cannot see it openly in the name.
One sees it simply from the above-mentioned proof in Chassidus:
There are several people with the same name Reuven,
even though outwardly one can be completely different from the other,
in his essence,
in his intellect,
in his standing and situation etc.
True, indeed, that his name which is called in the Holy Tongue animates the thing that is called by that name,
and consequently the name certainly has a connection to his essence — but this is not seen openly,
and for this one must come to the Baal Shem Tov and to Midrash Tehillim 51,
and this is a matter that one must learn and understand etc.,
and not everyone,
even an intellectual,
can attain this,
until one emphasizes that specifically "Rabbi Meir would delve into names" 52.
On the contrary — one can easily test this:
After a farbrengen, let them gather several Jews who have the same name
(Reuven etc.)
over the course of thirty days 53,
or even non-Jews,
and let one see for himself whether one can find a connection between them
(since they have the same name which animates them)!
On the contrary:
The differences between them and that "their opinions are not equal" 54 — this everyone can see openly:
Let them be told a matter,
one will see that one will say yes and another will say no,
for this is the nature of human beings, since their opinions are not equal;
ווארום דאס איז טבע בני אדם מצד אין דיעותיהן שוות;
but in order to understand the connection between them — for this one must come to a Mar bar Rav Ashi,
and to a great sage in the wisdom of the soul,
and even then, hopefully, after much contemplation on this, one may be able to perceive it!
Based on this, one will understand the connection of the name of the portion "Shmos" with the content of the entire portion regarding the exile and bondage of Egypt:
According to the above, it is understood that in a name
(simply)
the person is found in concealment,
for in the name one does not see at all what kind of essence of a person he is,
he can be the most elevated person, but in his name it is in the utmost concealment. And even the most elevated matters that exist in the name
(the very essence of the person)
— are in concealment in the name.
This is the concept of exile — that one becomes displaced from his place and from his essence and from his true existence
(his soul)
and he is in a place and standing and situation where his essence and existence
(his soul)
are in concealment;
שטייט בהעלם;
and this is the beginning that gives room for the concept of exile in the world — where G‑dliness is in concealment,
"Our signs we have not seen... and we know not until what" 55
(not as in the time of the Temple when G‑dliness was revealed).
Just as redemption means that one returns to his essence and existence,
i.e., to the revelation of the essence and existence,
so exile is exactly the opposite — that his true essence and existence are in concealment.
What, for a Jew, is the explanation of this,
both in exile and in redemption,
is not that he goes away from,
or returns to, his essence and existence,
rather, exile means that his essence and existence are in concealment
(in exile),
and redemption means that he reveals it.
This is the content of the concept of the name,
in which the essence of the person is in concealment.
And with this, the connection of the name of the portion "Shmos" with the content of the portion regarding the exile and bondage of Egypt is understood:
"And these are the names of the children of Israel coming to Egypt":
How can there be for Jews the state of "coming to Egypt" and the concept of exile and bondage? The true place of Jews is surely not exile!
— This is only through that which "And these are the names of the children of Israel",
for in "the names of the children of Israel"
(simply, the concept of the name)
the essence and soul of the Jews are in concealment,
consequently, this is a cause that allows room for the concept of "coming to Egypt" and exile,
where one becomes displaced from his place and true state,
and G‑dliness is in concealment,
"Our signs we have not seen",
which begins from the fact that there is a concept of "names",
that the soul and essence of the children of Israel are in concealment.
In the Midrash 56 it states that "Israel were redeemed from Egypt" because throughout the entire exile there remained "these are the names of the children of Israel". "They did not change their name etc.",
"Reuven and Shimon descended, Reuven and Shimon ascended";
"ראובן ושמעון נחתין ראובן ושמעון סלקין";
but the simple meaning of the concept of "names" is a concealment of the essence of the person,
which gives room for the concealment and descent in exile* 56.
Therefore the parshah is called by the name "Shmos",
because specifically the word "Shmos" expresses the content,
and moreover - this
(the concealment and hiding of the essence of man from "Shmos")
is the reason for the matter of the exile and slavery of Egypt which is discussed further in the entire parshah,
with all the stages in the descent in the difficulty of the slavery.
Until Pharaoh's decree at the end of the parshah that "you shall not give straw to the people to make bricks as yesterday and the day before; they shall go and gather straw for themselves",
which is a further descent in the difficulty of the slavery more than the very matter of hard labor,
and to such an extent is the descent and the concealment and hiding,
that even though this is not logical,
as the foremen indeed complained to Pharaoh:
"Straw is not given to your servants, and they say to us, 'Make bricks,' and behold your servants are beaten, and your people sin"57,
so how,
he reasoned,
will the slaves be able to build for him Pithom and Raamses when they have no strength? For this is indeed a rationale that should have entered Pharaoh's intellect,
because it is indeed for his benefit that in order to build Pithom and Raamses one needs healthy and strong slaves.
Nevertheless, the concealment and hiding
(which initially comes from the concealment and hiding in "Shmos")
was so great,
that it caused Pharaoh to act contrary to his own intellect!
Until one comes to Moshe's complaint at the conclusion of the parshah "Why have You done evil to this people",
which is a true evil,
as is understood from the fact that this is the complaint of Moshe whose attribute is truth.
One sees from this that "Shmos"
(the name of the entire parshah)
expresses the content of the entire parshah,
and moreover - this is the reason for the entire parshah,
where it discusses the darkness of exile and the difficulty of slavery,
until the conclusion of the parshah "Why have You done evil, etc."
And only the last verse in the parshah - in order to conclude with good58 - discusses a matter of good:
"And with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land."
Moreover:
In truth, even the conclusion with good is only a good relative to what is discussed earlier in the parshah,
but this is also not the ultimate good
[as we find elsewhere in the Talmud,
that the conclusion with good is only relative to the matters that precede it.
And elsewhere].
And the explanation:
Regarding the exodus from Egypt, one will need to come to "with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land" because there will be Jews who do not want to leave the exile,
even when one tells them that the time has come to leave the exile and one tells them all the good things - they do not want to leave,
and therefore one must drive them out from there!59
And the primary reason for this is also the matter of "Shmos":
Because their essence and soul as Jews is in concealment,
it allows room for exile to the extent that the self does not want to leave the exile.
From all the above, the connection of the name of the parshah "Shmos" with the content of the parshah is understood - according to the simple interpretation of "Shmos"
(that the essence of man is concealed in the name):
The content of the parshah simply is - the slavery and exile of Egypt. And the reason for this is the matter of "Shmos" according to the simple interpretation of it,
that in it the essence and existence is concealed,
consequently it allows room for the descent of the Jews into exile,
with all the details thereof that are discussed in the parshah.
Together with this, however, there is the second matter in
(the name of the parshah)
"Shmos"
(as it is stated in the books)
- the matter for the positive - that the name draws down the vitality of the person
(through the letters of the name, the vitality of the soul is drawn into the body),
and the name touches and reveals the essence of the person,
which the essence of Jews is never touched and remains always in perfection,
even when in the concealment and hiding of "Shmos"
(which conceal the essence of man)
and in the concealment and hiding of exile.
That is, when one discusses the simple aspects of matters,
as one sees the matters in revelation - the matter of "Shmos" is a matter of deficiency that conceals the essence of man,
and correspondingly the content of the parshah is - exile and slavery of Egypt
(which comes from the fact that "Shmos" conceals the soul);
(וואס דאס קומט מצד דעם וואס "שמות" איז מעלים אויף דער נשמה);
But when speaking about the inner aspects of matters
(which are not seen openly and for which one must arrive at what is written in the books)
— the concept of "names" is connected to the vitality and essence of the person,
which always remains whole,
and so too the inner content of Parshat Shemot,
that exile does not touch the essence of Jews at all.
And from the aspect of this concept in "names"
(that they did not change their name)
"Israel was redeemed from Egypt."
And the explanation:
Even when the essence of a Jew is concealed in his name,
which therefore gives a place for the descent into exile,
where the soul and essence of a Jew is concealed
(as opposed to the concept of redemption where the essence and soul are revealed)
— this is only regarding revelation and concealment,
but his essence remains completely whole even then.
As per the ruling of the Rambam60
(the Guide of the Perplexed of all generations)
that the true and inner will of a Jew is "to perform all the mitzvot and to distance himself from transgressions",
and that which this is sometimes concealed and he conducts himself otherwise,
is due to the fact that "his evil inclination overpowered him".
And the reason — because a Jew always has a "veritable part of G-d from above"61 by virtue of which he always desires to fulfill the will of Hashem. And in the language of the verse62 "You are children to Hashem your G-d",
and the nature of a child is similar to the nature of the father, and the will of the child is to fulfill the will of the father,
except when the child is not healthy,
which comes from an external and extraneous thing — "his evil inclination overpowered him",
which temporarily conceals his inner self and essence;
וואס איז מעלים לפי שעה אויף זיין פנימיות ועצם;
but his true nature and will even then is to fulfill the will of the father.
And this is also a refutation of the claim,
that it is inappropriate to speak to a Jew about putting on tefillin or wearing tzitzit and the like as long as he is not yet connected to it and does not understand what he is doing — because then he is a hypocrite,
he does something that he is not connected to, etc.
This claim is entirely unfounded — because it is precisely the opposite:
The true reality and will of a Jew is — to fulfill the Torah and mitzvot,
"to perform all the mitzvot and to distance himself from transgressions",
for he has a soul,
a "veritable part of G-d from above",
and is a child of the Holy One, blessed be He,
who desires to fulfill the will of his Father. Consequently,
when he puts on tefillin or performs another mitzvah — he does that which is good for his soul — his true essence and reality,
and that which he truly wants to do from the inner aspect of his soul.
Whether he does not yet understand it intellectually or is not yet connected to it — this is all due to extraneous things,
due to his body and animal soul,
"his evil inclination overpowered him" and the like,
but it is certainly not logical to say,
that since his body is not yet at the point of understanding what is truly good for his soul
(for his true reality)
— he should refrain from doing something that is good for his soul!
And this is analogous to a parable regarding bodily needs:
It is not logical to say that when a child is not healthy, G-d forbid, the parents will not give the child the medicines that the doctor prescribes until the child himself understands with his intellect how the medicines will help him! And especially when the medicine is not always sweet,
but it can be sharp and sometimes even bitter!
One understands on his own,
that if it concerns healthy parents,
they will certainly give the child the medicines,
before he studies the science of medicine and before he understands how it helps him! And on the contrary:
By giving him the medicine and he becomes healthy again,
he can have the strength and health to study the science of medicine and understand how the medicines help him!
So too regarding eating and drinking in general
(which is a closer example to our matter — Torah and mitzvot which are compared to eating, etc.163):
There is a sickness where a person loses his appetite and does not want to eat. Not only does he have no desire to eat,
but he has a specific desire not to eat. And when one tells him that by not eating he weakens his health,
he answers,
since his desire is not to eat,
by wanting to force him to eat one will make him even more unwell! Even though he becomes weaker from not eating — he holds that this comes not from the lack of eating and drinking,
but because of some extraneous matter!
This proves that his sickness is very strong,
to the extent that he does not know at all that he is sick,
and that which he becomes weaker — he thinks this comes from an extraneous matter,
not because of his lack of eating and drinking!
It is therefore understood,
that one cannot wait to give that person food until he understands with his intellect why he needs to eat,
rather, first and foremost he needs to eat in actuality for the sustenance of his body,
afterwards he can sit and learn about the reasons for this.
And in the same manner, it is also regarding Torah and mitzvos — which are compared to eating and drinking 63 that give a person vitality in his soul and thereby in his body — as it is written 64 “Come, eat of my bread,”
and as it is stated regarding Torah and mitzvos “which a man shall do and live by them” 65,
as is known that the 248 positive commandments and 365 negative commandments — through the 248 and 365 powers and vitalities in the soul — are the true existence and source of vitality and health of the 248 limbs and 365 sinews,
[As explained in Tanya 66 that although the soul in itself has no connection to the division and form of 248 limbs and 365 sinews,
but because in the body there are 248 limbs and 365 sinews whose vitality is from the soul,
“613 kinds of powers and vitalities are included in it (in the soul) in its essence and substance, to emerge into actuality and revelation from concealment to give life to the 248 limbs and 365 sinews of the body through their enclothing in the animal soul which also has these 248 and 365 powers and vitalities”:]
Since Torah and mitzvos are the source of vitality and health of the soul and body,
one cannot wait until the person understands it with his intellect,
rather, first and foremost there must be “we will do” 67,
and this itself will give him vitality so that afterwards there can be “we will hear”
(and we will understand),
that he should learn and understand the matters.
Based on the above, one will also understand the two extremes that exist in “Shmos”:
In the simple sense of matters, “Shmos” conceals the essence of Jews,
therefore it gives a place for the matter of exile
(as discussed at length).
That is, as matters are simply as one sees them revealed in this physical world — one does not see from the name of the person what kind of person this is. This is the simple content of the parshah — that Jews are in a concealment and hiding of exile where their true essence is not seen. And to the extent that the attribute of judgment can argue “what distinguishes these from those,
these are idol worshippers and those are idol worshippers” 68,
because in the revealed one does not see the difference between them.
Together with this, however, there is the inner and lofty matter in “Shmos”
(which is not seen openly,
and one must arrive at it because it is stated thus in the books)
— that the name draws down and reveals the essence of the soul’s vitality and the essence of the person,
and through the letters of the name the vitality of the soul is drawn into the body,
until the name of the person encompasses the essence of the person,
so that from the essence of a Jew his true will is “to perform all the mitzvos and distance himself from transgressions”,
and that which he sometimes does not conduct himself thus is only because “his evil inclination overpowered him”.
That is,
that the matter
(inner)
of the name
(that it is connected with the essence of the person)
brings out that although externally Jews are in exile and externally one cannot see their true essence and one might think that they are no different from the nations,
“these are idol worshippers and those are idol worshippers” — but in truth there is a difference between them from one extreme to the other:
When a gentile serves idolatry — he serves idolatry,
but when a Jew serves idolatry, heaven forbid,
this is only because “his evil inclination overpowered him”,
but from his inwardness and essence he has no connection to it and only wants to fulfill the will of Hashem.
And in the merit of this, that they did not change their name — from the aspect of the inner matter in "names" — "Israel were redeemed from Egypt."
Until Chassidus reveals further:
Thus is the explanation
(as above at length),
that in revelation and externality, a name conceals the essence of the person and thereby leaves room for exile,
and only from what is stated in the books does one know that a name has within it the virtue that it is connected with the inwardness and essence of the person
(through the letters of the name, the life-force of the soul is drawn into the body),
which is not affected by exile,
and the external matters are only due to his evil inclination compelling him.
Chassidus, however, is not satisfied with this
(that through the letters of the name, the life-force of the soul is drawn into the body),
but adds69 that the name reveals the essence,
with the proof from something openly revealed in the physical body — that when someone is in a faint, heaven forbid,
one awakens him by whispering his name in his ear,
which is proof that the name touches and reveals the essence of the life-force of the soul,
and therefore it has the power to draw the life-force back into the faculties of the body.
Seemingly:
Why does Chassidus need to bring this matter — is there not a greater matter in a name,
that the entire life-force of the person is drawn into the body through the letters of the name?
The explanation in this is:
Every matter in Torah must be expressed and reflected openly in the physicality of the world. Therefore Chassidus adds that this matter — that a name grasps the essence — is expressed openly in the physical body of a person,
that when he is in a state of faint, may the Merciful One save us,
one awakens him by whispering his name in his ear.
And not only is it so stated in Chassidus
(which is also a matter of revelation),
but it is so revealed in this physical world that it was seen with physical eyes:
When it was actually tested with a person who had fainted, may the Merciful One save us,
it was seen that this awakened him!
To the extent that this can be so even with a non-Jew70,
from the aspect of the matter of choice
[I did not find it stated explicitly anywhere regarding a non-Jew,
therefore one can ponder this:
but from the aspect of the matter of choice, one must say that something similar is so also with non-Jews]
— to such an extent is this revealed.
From this one sees the innovation that was added in the latter generations through the revelation of Chassidus:
Before the revelation of Chassidus, the essence of the person was not revealed in the person's name. In revelation, one only saw that a name is an external matter that does not indicate the essence of the person,
and one only knew from books that a name is connected with the life-force of the soul,
but this was a matter that stood hidden and concealed in the name.
After, however, it became "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom"71,
until the revelation of Chassidus
(whose general matter is the revelation of the hidden)
— the revelation of the essence through the name emerged from the category of hidden and became a matter revealed and simple in this physical world
(for the discourses are printed and everyone can study in them),
to the extent that one sees it openly with physical eyes when one awakens a person who has fainted by whispering his name in his ear.
And Chassidus revealed it to everyone,
to the extent that even a young bochur who is just beginning to learn Chassidus and learns this matter — that a name reveals the essence of the soul and therefore one awakens through it a person who is in a faint — repeats it with innocence and simplicity,
from the aspect that he is a believer the son of a believer,
even though he does not understand it!
The lesson from this:
When you meet a Jew on the street, in whose externality you see the first matter in "name" — one sees that he has a Jewish name
(Reuven or Shimon and the like),
but his essence stands hidden,
one does not see openly his connection with Torah and mitzvos —
You are told:
"Do not look at his appearance"72,
do not look at his externality,
rather at the inwardness of the matter of the name,
for after it became "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom" and the revelation of Chassidus,
the order became that everyone can see openly the

lofty matter that exists in a name — the revelation of the essence of a Jew,
by virtue of which he is at the ultimate level of perfection!
And one only needs to call out his name,
in a manner of words that come from the heart73 — then one immediately arouses him from his fainting in matters of Judaism,
for through this one arouses his essential life-force of the soul which is above his internal powers, and this restores his vitality in all his powers.
And on the contrary — in this there is an advantage over the order of service with the internal powers:
When one needs to arouse in that person the internal powers,
one must proceed in order from the light to the heavy,
it must pass through the three intellects
(Wisdom, Understanding, and Knowledge)
and the seven emotions and the three garments,
which takes time and effort, and not everyone can do it equally, etc.;
וואס דאס נעמט צייט און מרץ און ניט ביי אלעמען קען מען אויפטאן בשוה וכו';
But not so when one arouses his essence
(through calling his name)
— then one arouses him immediately,
and immediately — in actual deed,
and afterwards it already affects all the powers from below upward!
And through that which one arouses the essence of a Jew by means of calling his name — the aspect of advantage in "names" — then one effects that, regardless of the fact that he is in exile
(as it speaks in Parshat Shemot),
the redemption comes immediately — the exodus from the concealment and hiding of "names."
And in the language of the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in connection with his redemption on 12 Tammuz:74
When one meets a Jew who "is called by the name Israel,"
he claims that the name Israel is for him merely a nickname75 — one must know that his true name "Israel" reveals the essence,
and from the perspective of the essence of every Jew, "Not only me did the Holy One, blessed be He, redeem,"
not only the head of Israel,
but in the same redemption there is also redeemed "all who are called by the name Israel,"
the lowest level in Israel,
and certainly the intermediate levels.
For this, it is only required that there be
(in the language of the leader of our generation76)
"stand ready, all of you,"
and that one arouse every Jew by means of calling his name and by means of the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah
(which reveals the essence of a Jew through calling his name)
in a manner of words that come from the heart and by showing a living example — then one is certainly successful in "awakening" all Jews from their fainting, heaven forbid, in exile,77
and going to the true and complete redemption.

Discourse (in the style of a talk)
Beginning with the words "And these are the names of the children of Israel, etc."
Regarding a verse and Rashi in our portion — there is a perplexing Rashi commentary,
where Rashi addresses a matter that is seemingly completely understandable in the simple meaning of the verses,
and nevertheless Rashi writes on it a commentary that is seemingly the opposite of the plain meaning!
At the beginning of the portion it states79 "And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shifrah and the name of the second was Puah,
and he said, 'When you deliver the Hebrew women, etc., if it is a son, you shall kill him, etc.'" Rashi comments and explains:
"Shifrah — this is Yocheved
(and she is called by the name 'Shifrah')
because she beautifies the newborn
(as is known that when the newborn emerges from its mother's womb it is covered in blood, and the midwife (Yocheved) cleans and beautifies it80],
Puah — this is Miriam
(and she is called 'Puah')
because she coos and speaks and murmurs to the newborn, in the manner of women who pacify a crying baby, etc."
A stormy question arises:
The explanation of the verses is completely understandable without Rashi,
and when Pharaoh told them "if it is a son, you shall kill him" they did not obey him,
"the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had spoken to them, and they kept the children alive."81
What is missing here in the plain meaning, that Rashi needs to come and extract the matter from its plain meaning,
and to innovate in the plain meaning of the verse that Shifrah and Puah do not mean Shifrah and Puah but rather Yocheved and Miriam,
and then he needs to go and explain why they were called here Shifrah and Puah
(when in truth they are Yocheved and Miriam)?
In addition to the difficulty that Miriam was a midwife — even though she was a young girl of a few years old82
(being before the birth of Moshe)!
Commentators83 explain that Rashi's compulsion is from his later commentary on the verse84 "And it was, because the midwives feared G-d, that He made for them houses",
where he quotes "And He made for them houses" and explains "houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty, which are called houses,
and he built the house of Hashem and the house of the king85,
priesthood and Levite from Yocheved and royalty from Miriam,
as it is brought in tractate Sotah86,
and since Rashi there is compelled to explain that this refers to Yocheved and Miriam
(from whom were established houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty),
this compels Rashi to explain earlier that Shifrah and Puah
(the midwives)
are Yocheved and Miriam
(and therefore he also needs to explain why they are called Shifrah and Puah).
The truth, however, is
that not only does this not answer the question,
but it makes the question even stronger:
If the verse "And He made for them houses" would compel straightforwardly
(according to the plain meaning)
that there it must be speaking about houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty,
and consequently about Yocheved and Miriam — then one could say that this compels Rashi to explain that Shifrah and Puah are Yocheved and Miriam;
ובמילא וועגן יוכבד ומרים - וואלט מען געקענט זאגן אז דאס איז מכריח רש"י'ן צו מפרש זיין אז שפרה ופועה זיינען יוכבד ומרים;
But we see from Rashi himself that this is not so straightforward:
a) Rashi needs to bring a proof for this from a verse,
that "houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty" are called by the name "houses". b) And he does not bring a proof from the Five Books of the Torah,
but rather he needs to come to a verse in the Prophets. c) Then Rashi needs to add — "as it is brought in tractate Sotah",
even though he does not write that "they expounded" or "they alluded" in tractate Sotah,
from which it is understood that this is an explanation according to the plain meaning — but from this we see that this is not understood from the study of the plain meaning on the spot,
but rather one needs to come to a Gemara for this.
And accordingly, the same question arises on Rashi on the verse "And He made for them houses"
(as was asked on that Rashi that Shifrah and Puah are Yocheved and Miriam)
— what compels Rashi to take the verse out of its plain meaning,
that "And He made for them houses" means simply,
that even though Pharaoh should have punished them for not obeying him,
but because "the midwives feared G-d" and they did not obey Pharaoh — their reward for this is that "He made for them houses",
they established families*86.
Also, one must understand:
Rashi only explains the word "houses",
that this means "houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty" — why does he also quote the words "And He made for them" in which he seemingly adds no explanation?
With yet several more precise points,
and as will be explained further.
It is also customary to dwell on a matter in the notes of the Tatte on the Zohar of our parshah.
In the current parshah, the Tatte87 dwells on the statement of the Zohar
(Part II, page 5, side a)
"If the people of the world knew the great honor of Yaakov at the time that the Holy One, blessed be He88 said 'I will go down with you to Egypt', they would be licking dust three parasangs near his grave,
for thus explain our great masters, the masters of the Mishnah89,
it is written90 'And Moshe went out to meet his father-in-law, etc.' it was found that all of Israel, all of them went out, etc. it was found that because of Moshe all of them went out,
and if because of Moshe so, because of the Holy One, blessed be He, when He said 'I will go down with you to Egypt', all the more so."
And he explains many details in this Zohar,
including — "why specifically licking dust,
what is the benefit in this",
"why specifically three parasangs",
"what need is there for the a fortiori argument from Moshe to the Holy One, blessed be He,
if even regarding Moshe this was not so,
all the more so regarding the Holy One, blessed be He,
as understood"91
(and especially since regarding Moshe and Yitro no proof and a fortiori argument is brought from another place],
and more.
He does not, however, explain the lesson that can be derived from this in the service of Hashem — and as will be explained further.
It is also customary lately to speak about a matter in the daily study of the Rambam.
In today's lesson, we begin learning the laws of neighbors.
Immediately. At the beginning of the lesson in the Rambam
(at the start of Hilchot Shecheinim)
one sees a wondrous and novel thing:
Since the Rambam calls these laws "Hilchot Shecheinim" and after this comes "Hilchot Sheluchin veShutafin" — it would be fitting that in Hilchot Shecheinim he should speak about the laws of neighbors,
and in Hilchot Sheluchin veShutafin he should speak about the laws of partners.
In practice, however, we see that he begins to speak in Hilchot Shecheinim not about the laws of neighbors themselves,
but rather about the laws of partners — one of the ways one becomes neighbors:
that initially there are partners in a piece of land,
and afterwards the partners divide the land and each takes his portion,
and only after a great length with many laws about the division of the land between the partners,
at which point they become neighbors,
does the Rambam continue regarding the laws connected with neighbors!
It is not understood:
Being Hilchot Shecheinim, he should have begun speaking about the laws of neighbors themselves,
and about the laws of partners he should have written later in Hilchot Shecheinim
(if it is relevant to Hilchot Shecheinim),
or in Hilchot Sheluchin veShutafin — but why does he begin Hilchot Shecheinim with a lengthy discussion about the laws of dividing land between partners,
"One who buys from his fellow half his field, or two who buy a field from one, or who inherit, or to whom it is given as a gift, etc.,
in short, whenever there is partnership in land between them and one of the partners seeks to divide and take his portion alone,
if that land is subject to division, he forces the other partners and they divide with him,
and if it is not subject to division, none of them can force his fellow to divide, etc.,"
and only after a lengthy discussion on this does he speak about the laws of neighbors?!
And as will be explained below, how the matter is according to the method of study "to correct the opinions and straighten all deeds"92.
In this lesson of Rambam — at the end of the lesson — one also sees the great precision of the Rambam's language:
At the end of the lesson93 the Rambam writes:
"The people of the river irrigate in order,
if one of them wants to dam up so that the water returns to him and he irrigates first and then opens,
and one wants to irrigate first — whoever prevails acquires."
Here one sees the clear language94 and pure language95 of the Rambam
(in the language of the Mishnah96),
and how he expresses several matters in his clear and precise language:
The usual language for this matter in the Talmud is — "kol d'alim gavar"97. The Rambam, however, writes the language "kol hamitgaber zachah"98. And the difference:
The language "kol hamitgaber zachah" is much more refined than the language "kol d'alim gavar",
consequently it is more fitting for a law in the Torah:
"D'alim" indicates that there is still some element of violence in it,
i.e. — the opposite of fairness;
ד.ה. - היפך היושר;
whereas "hamitgaber" can be entirely in a holy manner — as it is written99 "Let not the mighty boast in his might, etc.",
rather he must boast in that his might is from the Most High — a strengthening in holiness,
a strengthening in the service of Hashem,
strengthening against the evil inclination,
and so forth.
"Gavar" indicates that even though he indeed obtained,
it is, however, in a manner of "gavar",
not necessarily a matter of superiority;
לאו דוקא אן ענין למעליותא;
whereas "zachah" is a much more refined language,
a language of superiority — that he is not merely stronger,
but he has also merited it.
Another matter in today's lesson of Rambam — in the middle of the lesson:
Among the laws of dividing lands between partners, the Rambam writes the law100:
"One who rents from his fellow part of a courtyard or a field that is not subject to division, or two who rent a place together in partnership,
each one can force his fellow and say to him: either rent my portion from me or rent your portion to me,
and if it is subject to division, they divide."
The Ra'avad, however, argues on this and holds,
that "they said 'gud o agud' only regarding inheritance and a gift",
where the partnership came not by his will,
whereas in a partnership through rental or purchase,
which was by his will,
one cannot say "gud o agud",
because he willingly took the other as a partner,
knowing whom he takes as a partner,
consequently he cannot later regret it.
In this dispute between the Rambam and the Ra'avad, one sees a general principle in the method of the Rambam and the Ra'avad.
And as will be explained below.
This Shabbos has an additional aspect:
It falls between the 20th of Teves,
the yom hilula of the Rambam,
and the 24th of Teves,
the yom hilula of the Alter Rebbe.
In the fixed calendar of this year, this Shabbos falls between the 20th of Teves and the 24th of Teves — Shabbos Parshas Shemos,
and both days
(the 20th of Teves and the 24th of Teves)
have a special connection to Shabbos Parshas Shemos:
The 20th of Teves, in the fixed calendar of this year, occurred on the fourth day of Parshas Shemos,
which has a special connection to the following Shabbos
(Shabbos Parshas Shemos)
— being the beginning of the ascent of Shabbos101,
when we say the "small Lechu Neranena"
(in the language of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe102).
And the 24th of Teves this year is on the conclusion of this Shabbos — Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Shemos.
The connection of the 24th of Teves to Shabbos Parshas Shemos is further:
The histalkus of the Alter Rebbe also occurred on Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Shemos. This date can be recorded in two ways:
a) the night of Sunday of Parshas Va'eira,
or b) Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Shemos. We see that the language of the Tzemach Tzedek regarding the time of the histalkus103 is — "on Motzaei Shabbos of Shemos."
The emphasis and novelty in this is further:
The Gemara104 says that "one who dies on Erev Shabbos is a good sign for him
(that he enters into rest immediately105),
[but] on Motzaei Shabbos it is a bad sign for him." The Tzemach Tzedek had the choice to emphasize that the histalkus was on the night of Sunday,
whereby the deficiency of Motzaei Shabbos would not be so emphasized,
and the advantage of Sunday, the first day, etc., would be emphasized,
nevertheless he writes that it was "on Motzaei Shabbos of Shemos"!
From this it is understood:
Since both days
(the 20th of Teves and the 24th of Teves)
are connected
(in the fixed calendar of this year)
and, as is known*105, all matters and events of the week are alluded to in the parshah of the week — with the Shabbos of Parshas Shemos,
the content of the avodah of both baalei hilula
(the Rambam and the Alter Rebbe)
is alluded to in Parshas Shemos.
Previously it was explained
(and it has already been printed106)
the connection of the 20th of Teves and the 24th of Teves to Parshas Va'eira — according to the fixed calendar in several years when both days occur in the week of Parshas Va'eira;
די שייכות פון כ"ף טבת וכ"ד טבת צו פ' וארא - לויט דער קביעות בכמה שנים ווען ביידע טעג קומען אויס אין דער וואך פון פ' וארא;
but corresponding to the fact that in the fixed calendar of this year they both occur in Parshas Shemos — they must also have a connection to Parshas Shemos. And a connection both from the aspect of the common denominator between them,
and from the aspect of the differences between them,
regarding which differences between them we will primarily speak now,
because regarding the common denominator between them we have already spoken previously
(and it is printed).
And the explanation:
In Torah Ohr on our parshah and in the Chassidic discourses that follow it
(a part of which was reviewed earlier)
it is explained regarding the two times that it is written "And these are the names of the children of Israel etc." — in Parshas Vayigash107 and at the beginning of Parshas Shemos,
that the purpose of the descent of the soul into the body is in order to draw down the aspect of His great Name into revelation below,
which is accomplished through Torah,
because "the entire Torah is the Names of the Holy One, blessed be He"
(as the Ramban writes in his introduction to the Torah108).
And in this itself, there are generally two levels in the revelation of the aspect of supernal Names below through the children of Israel
("these are the names of the children of Israel",
"that the children of Israel draw down and effect the aspect of the revelation of supernal Names below" through the Torah)
— the aspect of Names of the concealed worlds
(corresponding to which is "these are the names of the children of Israel" in Parshas Vayigash),
and the aspect of Names of the revealed worlds
(corresponding to which is "these are the names of the children of Israel" in Parshas Shemos).
It can be said that analogous to this is the difference between the Torah of the Rambam and the Torah of the Alter Rebbe — both of which are "Names of the Holy One, blessed be He",
but in particular, the Torah of the Rambam is analogous to the revelation of the aspect of Names of the revealed worlds, and the Torah of the Alter Rebbe is analogous to the revelation of the aspect of Names of the concealed worlds.
And the explanation:
Although in general there is a common denominator between the Torah of the Rambam and the Torah of the Alter Rebbe,
in that both produced books in the revealed Torah
(up to definitive halachic rulings)
and in the hidden Torah:
The Rambam — the revealed Torah in his book Yad HaChazakah,
and the hidden Torah
(relative to the Rambam)
— concerning Maaseh Merkavah and Maaseh Bereishis — in his book Moreh Nevuchim,
and in the first four chapters of the book Yad;
און אין די ערשטע פיר פרקים פון ספר היד;
and the Alter Rebbe — the revealed Torah in his Shulchan Aruch,
and the hidden Torah in his Tanya and his Maamarim
[as discussed at length in the aforementioned sicha]
— nevertheless, one sees a fundamental difference between their Torah — the Torah of the Rambam is in a manner of revealed
(worlds of revelation)
in contrast to the Torah of the Alter Rebbe, which is in a manner of the revelation of the hidden
(concealed worlds):
The Rambam in his halachic book
(Yad HaChazakah)
writes the halachos without their reasons.
In contrast, the Alter Rebbe in his halachic book
(Shulchan Aruch)
writes the "halachos with their reasons" 109.
The difference between them:
In the reasons are found the innerness, soul, and hidden aspect of the laws. It follows,
that in the Torah of the Rambam only the matters of the revealed are openly stated, and not the matters of innerness and soul — the laws themselves without their reasons,
in contrast to the Torah of the Alter Rebbe, where the revealed is openly stated
(the laws themselves)
together with the soul, innerness, and hidden aspect
(the reasons of the laws).
This difference between them is seen even more in their hidden Torah:
Although his book Moreh Nevuchim and the first four chapters in the book Yad are a matter of the hidden aspect of the Torah
(which speaks about Maaseh Merkavah and Maaseh Bereishis)
relative to the rest of the Rambam's Torah,
as the Rambam writes in his introduction to his book Moreh Nevuchim the cautions one must have in order to study it, etc. 110 — one sees that there too the matters of the revealed are in a manner of revealed,
in contrast, the matters of the hidden are in a manner of hidden,
i.e., that openly one sees primarily the matter of the revealed,
and the hidden aspect within it remains concealed.
As one sees at the beginning of the book Yad HaChazakah
(at the start of the first four chapters where he speaks about Maaseh Merkavah and Maaseh Bereishis)
— that the Name Havayah
(a matter of the hidden)
the Rambam only hints at in an acronym of the words "Yesod HaYesodos v'Amud HaChochmos",
and openly he writes only the phrase "Metzui Rishon",
a term of the revealed,
and in order to know the acronym one must first reach his grandson 111.
Seemingly:
If the Rambam wishes to mention the Name Havayah — why does he not write it openly,
as he writes it openly in many places 112,
and specifically here at the beginning of the book Yad
(the halachic book)
does he only hint at it and write openly only the phrase "Metzui Rishon" etc.?
Rather, from this very thing one sees,
that in the Rambam's book
(even in the matters of Maaseh Merkavah etc.)
he writes openly only the matters of the revealed, whereas the matters of the hidden remain in concealment and hint.
And certainly when comparing the Torah of the Rambam to the Torah of Chassidus, and particularly that of the Alter Rebbe — one sees that even the hidden Torah in the Rambam's books
(Moreh Nevuchim and the first four chapters of the book Yad)
are revealed relative to Chassidus.
In contrast, in the hidden Torah of the Alter Rebbe it is exactly the opposite: specifically the matters of the hidden and innerness of the Torah are openly stated,
to the extent that even the matters of the revealed that are in his Chassidus are openly the innerness of the Torah,
as one sees in his Tanya and certainly in his Chassidic Maamarim.
Based on this, one can explain the connection of the two days of the Hilula of the Rambam and the Alter Rebbe
(the 20th and 24th of Teves)
to Parshas Shemos:
The Torah of the Rambam and the Torah of the Alter Rebbe are both
(a part of the entire Torah which is)
"the names of the Holy One, blessed be He",
which reveals and draws down here below the aspect of the names above
(up to the aspect of His great Name).
But in particular, the Torah of the Rambam
(where the revealed is openly stated and the hidden and the Name Havayah are concealed)
is connected with the drawing down and revelation of the aspect of the names of the worlds of revelation,
and the Torah of the Alter Rebbe
(where the hidden aspect of the Torah is openly stated)
is connected with the drawing down and revelation of the aspect of the names of the concealed worlds,
similar to the future revelation of "And the glory of Hashem shall be revealed 113 — the aspect of the name of the Holy One, blessed be He
(the Name Havayah)
114 — and all flesh together shall see etc.",
the revelation of the aspect of the names of the concealed worlds. Not as the Name Havayah is concealed
(in the present time)
as it is in the Torah of the Rambam.
And this should be connected with the two extremes that exist in a name,
as explained above at length:
Even when a name draws down and reveals the essence
(therefore it has the power to rouse from fainting),
nevertheless, in the name itself, no inner intentions and lofty matters that have the power to draw down the essence are heard explicitly,
rather, what is heard explicitly is a simple physical name,
and the only thing seen explicitly is the result of calling the name — that it rouses from fainting;
און די איינציקע זאך וואס מ'זעט בגלוי איז די תוצאה פון קריאת השם - אז דאס איז מעורר מהתעלפות;
nevertheless, it is specifically the name that draws from the inwardness and essence of the person.
This is analogous to the aforementioned difference between the Torah of the Rambam and the Torah of the Alter Rebbe:
In the Torah of the Rambam there are also matters of the hidden and the inward,
analogous to how in a name there is the inner power to draw down the essence,
but explicitly one sees only matters of the revealed,
and the hidden remains concealed,
just as the inner power in a name remains concealed.
However, in the Torah of the Alter Rebbe, the hidden aspects of the Torah are explicitly stated,
the inner power in a name that draws from the inwardness and essence of the person.
Here is the place to continue the explanation of Rashi from last Shabbos115 on the verse116 "and he expired and was gathered" — "and death was not stated regarding him, and our Sages said117 'Yaakov our father did not die'."
It was explained then that "Yaakov our father did not die" does not mean that he remained alive,
rather that he "did not die" with an ordinary death that comes as a punishment for the sin of the Tree of Knowledge
("for on the day you eat from it you shall surely die"118).
However, this answer is entirely untenable according to the plain meaning,
and I relied on the fact that they would challenge this and make a great storm about it — because a five-year-old studying Scripture understands no practical difference whether this is a death that comes as a punishment for the sin of the Tree of Knowledge or not,
in terms of practical outcome there is no difference,
because either way
(even if Yaakov's passing did not come from the sin of the Tree of Knowledge)
he is absent as a soul in a body here below — so how can one say of him that he "did not die"?
Furthermore, a five-year-old studying Scripture does not understand how one can say that the sin of the Tree of Knowledge did not affect Yaakov — when Yaakov
(like all people)
descends from Adam the First,
therefore the sin of Adam the First certainly has an effect on all his children and grandchildren*118
(according to the plain meaning).
And although one could explain that Yaakov had no connection to the sin of the Tree of Knowledge because, had he been there at that time, he would not have sinned — this is not according to the plain meaning. And primarily: what is the practical difference? In practice, Adam the First transgressed the sin,
and consequently it has an effect on all his descendants in all the generations that came after him.
And furthermore, primarily:
What is the practical difference regarding Yaakov's passing? Yaakov actually passed away,
so what practical difference does it make whether this came from a connection to the sin of the Tree of Knowledge or not,
as above?
Moreover:
I have not yet found anyone,
even among older Jews
(even a hundred-year-old who is already completely completely...),
who can explain what indeed is the practical difference whether the death comes because of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge or not119,
whether it comes
(only)
from "the venom of the serpent"120 or not — either way it is a matter of the departure of the soul from the body,
so what is the practical difference?!
And the reasoning that ordinary death
(from the sin of the Tree of Knowledge,
and also from one's own sins)
comes through an angel and messenger,
whereas death that does not come through the sin of the Tree of Knowledge comes through the Holy One, blessed be He,
death by a kiss*120 — this is still a matter of death that is called death by a kiss — so what is the practical difference?!
And behold:
Even in the letters of Kabbalah and the letters of Chassidus it is difficult to explain this — all the more so according to the plain meaning for a five-year-old studying Scripture!
Therefore, one must still understand the explanation in Rashi's words "and death was not stated regarding him, and our Sages said 'Yaakov our father did not die'"?
So the explanation of this is
(as we began to discuss last Shabbos)
— that this is similar to how Rashi explained earlier regarding Chanoch:
Also regarding Chanoch, the language of death is not stated,
rather the language "and he was no more, for G-d took him"121. Rashi explains the reason for this:
"He was a righteous man, but light-minded in his thought to return and be wicked, therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, hastened and removed him and caused him to die before his time,
and this is why Scripture changed [the wording] regarding his death, writing 'and he was no more in the world' to fulfill his years."
And based on this, one will also understand regarding Jacob, that "death was not mentioned regarding him...
Jacob our father did not die":
The explanation of "Jacob our father did not die" is - that the "he expired and was gathered to his people" was not through "death",
but rather in the manner of "God took him"
(like Enoch),
who passed away before his time
(like Enoch).
And the proof that Jacob passed away before his time,
because he should have lived longer is - as explained in the plain meaning of Scripture,
as we learned earlier that Jacob said
(complained)
to Pharaoh "few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained the days of the years of the lives of my fathers".
That is, that Jacob complained about the fact that he would not live as many years as his parents - "few have been the days of the years of my life" relative to my fathers*.
As it was in practice, that Jacob lived only one hundred forty-seven years,
less than the one hundred eighty years of his father Isaac and less than the one hundred seventy-five years of Abraham.
From this it is understood that according to nature, Jacob should have lived like the days of the years of the lives of his fathers,
and when he lives less than that - this is a death before his time. Therefore he complained "few have been" about the fact that he would pass away before his time.
[And although we spoke last Shabbat,
that Jacob did not pass away before his time because he lived several years after the age of his mother* (and according to nature, a person can live in proximity to the years of his mother or to the years of his father) - this is a separate question regarding Jacob,
how does it come that he should complain about the fact that "few have been the days of the years of my life" relative to my fathers when he lived several years after the age of his mother;
ווי קומט עס אז ער זאל זיך קלאגן אויף דעם וואס "מעט גו' היו ימי שני חיי" לגבי אבותי ווען ער האט געלעבט כמה שנים לאחרי פרק אמו;
but in practice we see that Jacob complained about this].
This is indeed a matter that we find only by Jacob, that he should complain about this and protest the fact that "few have been" relative to the years of my fathers
[we find by others that their death was so many years before their father;
[מ'געפינט ביי אנדערע אז מיתתם איז געווען כו"כ שנים לפני אביהם;
but only by Jacob do we find that he protested this].
And therefore specifically by Jacob "death was not mentioned regarding him and our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said Jacob our father did not die",
because the "he expired and was gathered to his people" was not through "death" but rather in the manner of "God took him"
(like Enoch),
because his passing was before his time
(like Enoch)
and this bothered Jacob until he complained about it.
And one must add in the explanation of Rashi and the matter - that in all this there is a fundamental difference between Jacob and Enoch:
By Enoch, the reason for "God took him" before his time was because he was "light-minded to return and become wicked". Consequently, it is difficult to say that the matter of the opposite of good
(light-minded to return and become wicked)
is a reason for the negation of the matter of death entirely
(that all his passing was only through that which "God took him").
Therefore Rashi explains that in his passing there was a kind of death,
only "the Scripture changed regarding his death"
("the Holy One, blessed be He, hastened and removed him and caused him to die before his time").
However, by Jacob
(whose passing was not because he was "light-minded etc." heaven forbid)
- there was entirely no matter of death - "death was not mentioned regarding him...
Jacob our father did not die".
One must still understand
[in addition to the above - how does Jacob's claim accord with the fact that he lived several years after the age of his mother]:
Jacob's words to Pharaoh "few and evil have been the days of the years of my life etc." were simply when Jacob came to Egypt,
which was seventeen years before his death
(as it is written "and Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years").
Now, how did Jacob already know then,
and primarily - how does it fit that already then
(so many years before his death)
Jacob should complain "few have been the days of the years of my life" relative to his fathers
(it would be understandable if he says it at the end of the seventeen years,
but how does it fit to complain seventeen years before his death),
he then lived seventeen years and perhaps he would live more years,
until the days of the years of the lives of his fathers?!
From this we have the lesson,
that according to nature, every Jew must have length of days and good years at least like the years of the lives of his fathers,
and on the contrary:
There must be a special reason why this should not be so!
Therefore every Jew has the power
(from Jacob our father)
to demand that he should have length of days and good years! And when a Jew demands this - he brings it about and it becomes so in practice!
All the more so at a time when a Jew urges that the redemption should already come,
because it is already "all the deadlines have passed and the matter depends only on repentance,"
and the leader of our generation has already ruled that all Jews have already repented - "immediately to repentance,"
and now it must already be "immediately to redemption" - consequently one cries out:
"Until when?!"...
There are those who say:
How is it that a person sits and torments Jews for several hours,
and speaks here and there,
and then suddenly he cries out "enough of exile,"
and urges them that they should also cry out "until when,"
because it is already over,
Friday and the early hours of Shabbat,
and it is already afternoon after several hours that we have been speaking here,
and still he has not come!
They argue:
Why must one remind them on the day of Shabbat about the pain of exile,
and furthermore one must have complaints against the Most High
(as it were)
and say opinions to the Most High - we do not want to quarrel with the Most High. We want to live in peace with the Most High!
And especially since the Most High knows what He needs to do,
and knows what is stated in the Gemara that "all the deadlines have passed and the matter depends only on repentance,"
and knows that the leader of our generation ruled that Jews have already repented - so how does a "yell" come and urge that we must already have the redemption?!
One answers them,
that here it is not relevant to enter into any calculations,
what is relevant is only the matter - that the redemption should already come in actuality,
and in a manner of "I will hasten it" and "I will hasten it" within "I will hasten it"!!
If Jews sit at the farbrengen and sleep - they will be placed sleeping upon "the clouds of heaven,"
and waking from sleep they will open their eyes and see that they suddenly find themselves in Jerusalem the holy city,
or if they do not know where they are, they will be told,
and they will wash netilat yadayim and they will be told which blessing to make according to the Shulchan Aruch!...
If one has questions - in good health! But first let the redemption come,
and then Elijah will surely have mercy on him, seeing that he cannot sleep and he is distressed by the fact that he has a question, and Elijah will surely answer him the question.
But Jews - get out of exile!
[The Rebbe shlita interrupted at this moment and smiled,
and said:]
L'chaim,
l'chaim and blessing
[and made a motion with his hand indicating "yes".]
The lesson "to correct the opinions and to straighten all deeds" that can be derived from the fact that the Rambam begins the laws of neighbors with the laws of partners, and after the division of partners in land that involves division they become neighbors, and then the Rambam begins regarding the laws connected with neighbors:
The matter of "partners" and "neighbors" are two orders in the service of G-d,
and the order in this
(in the usual manner)
is - first comes the service of "partners" and then comes the service of "neighbors."
And the explanation:
In general - first and foremost comes the person himself
(the person in relation to himself),
who consists of "partners" - the soul and body which are two partners. Then comes the matter of how the person becomes a "neighbor" with others,
as the Rambam writes that man is political by nature - the matter of "neighbors."
And in particular - within the person himself:
First and foremost,
in order for there to be the very existence of a person,
"there are three partners in a person,
the Holy One blessed be He, and his father, and his mother,"
the father and mother give him the body and the Most High gives him the soul;
דער אב ואם גיבן אים דעם גוף און דער אויבערשטער גיט אים די נשמה 129;
afterwards a person also has within himself "neighbors,"
a good neighbor - the good inclination,
and a bad neighbor - the evil inclination,
And regarding this he must know the laws of the laws of neighbors,
in order to know how to conduct himself in relation to his neighbors
(the good inclination and the evil inclination)
- he should guard himself from damage of sight and general damage from the bad neighbor
(the evil inclination),
and strive that his close neighbor should be the good neighbor - the good inclination,
until the Most High Himself becomes his good neighbor,
which assists him in his service,
as it is said "a close neighbor is better than a distant brother"
(as explained in Ohr HaTorah of the Tzemach Tzedek on the verse),
until he also clarifies and transforms the bad neighbor
(the evil inclination)
- "with all your heart, with both your inclinations."
Afterwards one is elevated to a higher level in avodah - the level of "partners",
that not only is one a "neighbor"
(openly)
with the Most High
(one is in proximity to Him),
but one becomes a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation".
What this is, in general, is the difference between the avodah during the weekdays and the avodah on the day of Shabbos:
During the weekdays the avodah is to add to the world,
and to engage with the evil inclination
(the evil neighbor),
and to add so that one becomes
(openly)
a "close neighbor" with the Most High;
א "שכן קרוב" מיטן אויבערשטן;
afterwards, on the day of Shabbos, the avodah is to become a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation",
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said: "Whoever prays on Friday evening and says Vayechulu is considered as if he became a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation".
And in the avodah of man - this is the matter of the study of Torah,
because Torah is the level of Shabbos,
as understood from the words of our Sages, of blessed memory, that "according to everyone, the Torah was given on Shabbos",
because Torah and Shabbos are identical - that through Torah a Jew becomes a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation".
Afterwards one comes to an even higher level in avodah - the avodah of "neighbors" which comes after the avodah of "partners",
"partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation"
(as is the order in the Rambam):
First one is a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation". What a partner means is that in every single point of the thing he is a partner. And in the avodah of man this is that in every single matter a Jew must come to "the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him",
"and were it not for the Holy One, blessed be He, helping him, he could not overcome it".
That is, that in every single matter that the Jew does and in every matter in Torah that he learns, the Most High is a partner in it,
because "the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him".
Afterwards, however, he is elevated to a higher level - that he ceases to be a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He
(in all matters)
and he becomes a "neighbor" to the Holy One, blessed be He,
for which
(that from partners they should become neighbors)
it is required that the thing in which they are partners should have a division,
"for if it were divided among the partners, the least of them would receive a portion upon which the entire name is called, etc."
(four cubits in a courtyard, etc.).
And in avodah - that he also has the avodah in his own portion,
a "portion upon which the entire name is called",
Torah is called by his name,
by virtue of which he can demand "with force"
(by the merit in their hand,
not like "the entire world" which "is sustained by charity",
by the charity of the Holy One, blessed be He, and not by the merit in their hand)
. Then the Most High is not a "partner" with him in all matters,
but a "neighbor",
because he has a "portion upon which the entire name is called",
the avodah in his own portion which is called by his name,
by virtue of which he can demand "with force" from the Most High. Also then he needs to come to the help of the Holy One, blessed be He,
just as sometimes one also needs to come to the help of a neighbor,
but this is not like a partner who has a share in every single detail.
What this is, is the order in the Rambam,
that one begins with partners - the avodah of "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation",
that in every single matter of the Jew the Most High is a partner,
"the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him". Afterwards one is elevated from being a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He" to becoming a "neighbor" to the Holy One, blessed be He,
because one has a "portion upon which the entire name is called",
the avodah in his own portion.
And it can be said that this is also connected to the study of this matter in the Zohar:
Just as the Most High descended to Egypt together with our father Yaakov,
"I will go down with you to Egypt",
so too He descends into exile together with all Jews - because the soul of Yaakov is "inclusive of all the souls of Israel from the beginning of the world until the end of the world" - as it is stated "in all their affliction, He was afflicted".
Furthermore:
The precise point in this is,
that "in all their affliction, He was afflicted",
that is, that the "He was afflicted" is not a matter of "affliction" as it is from the aspect of Above - where there are powers to bear the affliction,
but "in all their affliction",
exactly as the affliction is below,
where there are not the powers to bear the affliction,
so is "He was afflicted" Above!
And when speaking about a Jew, it is understood that every small thing is a matter of "their affliction" - because Jews are the children of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov,
and therefore "even if you make them a feast like that of Shlomo in his time, you have not fulfilled your obligation towards them".
And it is known, the word of His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation,
that every Jew by the Most High is like a son-in-law living on board! For with a son-in-law living on board, every small action is "hard labor,"
as it is known that "hard labor" does not necessarily mean difficult labor,
but rather an unusual labor,
for example - women's work for men is for them "hard labor" because they are not accustomed to it. And since a son-in-law living on board is accustomed that his father-in-law should provide him with everything,
every small action is "hard labor"!
So too regarding every Jew,
who is like a son-in-law living on board by the Most High - that every small thing that he needs to do in this physical world is a matter of "their distress." One tells him that he should have to do with physicality and materiality - he cries out that this is "their distress,"
because he is not accustomed to this,
he is accustomed to sit and study Torah and the Most High should provide him with everything!
One says to a Jew,
"I will descend with you to Egypt,"
"In all their distress, He is distressed,"
that the Most High descends together with him into exile and into all the matters of distress that he has in exile,
until in a manner that "in all their distress
(according to the value of a created being)
He is distressed"
(as above).
And since "I will descend with you to Egypt" - one has the instruction from the Zohar - that all matters of exile
(Egypt)
come out to help the Jew
(all the more so as it was by Moses that at the time "Moses went out to meet his father-in-law" "all of them went out")
to clarify, refine, and elevate the exile,
until drawing down the Aleph of the Alufo Shel Olam into "Golah"
(exile),
immediately becomes "Geulah."
And especially at a time when Jews add further in this and perform the service with joy,
joy breaks all boundaries,
even the boundaries of holiness,
all the more so the boundaries of the opposite of holiness,
of exile - and immediately comes the redemption.
All the more so when one performs the service in public,
for even an individual can tip the scales for himself and for the entire world to the side of merit and bring about salvation and deliverance for himself and for them
(according to the ruling of the Rambam),
all the more so a multitude.
And this is the connection with the "gathering" that is now taking place,
and will continue also at the conclusion of Shabbat, etc.,
where Jews have gathered together in public in order to strengthen themselves in matters of Judaism.
And in order to include all those assembled here in this matter through a physical thing - they will now distribute beverage from the farbrengen for the "gathering,"
and they should distribute a part of it here
(since it is Shabbat),
and the rest - at the farbrengen that will take place at the conclusion of Shabbat.
And all this will further hasten the true and complete redemption,
and especially since the continuation of the "gathering" takes place at the Melaveh Malkah meal at the conclusion of Shabbat, which is called "the meal of King David, the Messiah."
In addition to this, there is another celebration connected with the old Rebbe that begins at the conclusion of Shabbat;
נוסף לזה איז דא נאך א מסיבה פארבונדן מיטן אלטן רבי'ן וואס הויבט זיך אן במוצאי שבת;
And they also sent beverage for a celebration that will take place at the conclusion of the coming Shabbat,
which in this year is Rosh Chodesh Shevat,
which is blessed from this Shabbat.
They will also participate in these celebrations by giving beverage for the celebrations,
and they should also announce about this now.
And may it be His will that from these joys they should come to "everlasting joy upon their head" in the eternal redemption for the eternal nation,

The explanation in Rashi in our portion regarding Shifrah and Puah:
When a child of five years of age studying the Written Torah learns the verse "And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the first was Shifrah and the name of the second was Puah," a "difficult question" arises for him,
and this compels Rashi to explain that Shifrah and Puah are Yocheved and Miriam, etc.:
It says earlier "And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty,"
until Rashi explains "that they gave birth to six at one birth" – now how did the entire Jewish people manage with only two midwives
(Shifrah and Puah)?!
Even if all these women had given birth in the usual manner, it is also not understandable how they managed with only two midwives,
because for every birth one must have a midwife,
all the more so "that they gave birth to six at one birth"?!
This compels Rashi to say that these two midwives
(Shifrah and Puah)
were not ordinary midwives,
but rather exceptional midwives,
righteous women,
who had the power to be midwives for so many Jews and for a birth of six at one birth. Therefore Rashi explains that Shifrah and Puah were not simply two women who were named Shifrah and Puah,
but rather Yocheved and Miriam,
who were righteous women
(and that which they are called here Shifrah and Puah is "because she beautifies the child, etc.").
This, however, is also not sufficient,
because even if one says that these two midwives were righteous women
(Yocheved and Miriam)
– one must also come to a very great miracle that they could be midwives for so many Jews,
and even for those who gave birth to six at one birth!
Rashi does not need to address this,
because the verse itself addresses it:
When Pharaoh argued with the midwives "Why have you done this thing, and have saved the boys alive,"
they answered him "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,
for they are lively, and before the midwife comes to them, they give birth." From this we see,
that the Hebrew women at that time did not need to come to midwives,
because they gave birth "before the midwife comes to them"!
And from the simple meaning of the verses it is understandable that this was not a lie
(in order to remove Pharaoh's claim),
but rather this was indeed the reality – because it is a matter that is exposed to public knowledge:
The Egyptians saw when a woman was pregnant, consequently they could investigate and clarify whether the women gave birth by themselves or with the help of a midwife,
and it could not be hidden
[as it says further "And she could no longer hide him,"
"the Egyptians counted for her, etc., and they investigated after her at the end of nine months"];
"שמנו לה המצרים כו' והם בדקו אחרי' לסוף ט'"];
so if the reality was not as the midwives said that "before the midwife comes to them, they give birth" – Pharaoh could have easily found out whether they were telling the truth,
and if they were not telling the truth, Pharaoh certainly would not have accepted the excuse,
and he would certainly have responded to them about it,
and we do not find that he questioned them.
Therefore from this
(that we do not find that Pharaoh did not accept their excuse)
it is understood that this was indeed the reality that "before the midwife comes to them, they give birth."
Furthermore:
Since it is a matter that is exposed to public knowledge – the midwives themselves would not have said this excuse,
knowing that Pharaoh could easily find out whether they were telling the truth.
[Our Sages of blessed memory say that the women would go out to the field to give birth to children,
and according to this the midwives could do nothing at all;
ועפ"ז האבן די מילדות גארניט געקענט טאן;
but according to the simple explanation, one does not need to come to this.]
It turns out that according to the simple explanation, the reality was indeed that "before the midwife comes to them, they give birth."
According to this, the question also falls away: how did two midwives manage with so many births? Because indeed, at that time, they did not need to come to the midwives.
(Because they gave birth "before the midwife came to them").
Only in order to calm the women,
so that if something happens, they should know that there are midwives — there were two midwives. In practice, they may never have needed to come to them,
but in order to calm the women, these two midwives were there.
But regarding this itself
(in order to calm the women)
one also needed to have distinguished women,
whom all women know that they can rely on them to come if something happens — therefore Rashi explains that Shifrah and Puah were not ordinary women,
but special women — Yocheved and Miriam,
righteous women,
upon whom one could rely,
consequently, they were calm.
[The simple meaning of the verse itself only compels that they were special midwives,
but from the simple meaning of the verse one does not know who they were;
אבער פון פשוטו של מקרא ווייסט מען ניט ווער זיי זיינען געווען;
and for this Rashi needs to come to the Oral Torah that they were Yocheved and Miriam,
because of that "which was a tradition in their hands" that Shifrah and Puah are Yocheved and Miriam,
or one knows it from that which is stated later "and He made them houses" (which refers to Yocheved and Miriam,
as Rashi explains later),
as explained in the commentators of Rashi,
and as follows].
According to this, the question arises — in what did the reward and goodness consist for the midwives "and He made them houses" because of that which "the midwives feared God":
Granted, if Pharaoh had not accepted their excuse
(that "before the midwife comes to them, they give birth")
and had wanted to punish them for that which "they kept the children alive" — one could learn that the Almighty paid them with the reward and goodness of "and He made them houses",
that they were not punished by Pharaoh, but they established families;
אז זיי זיינען ניט נענש געווארן פון פרעה נאר זיי האבן אויפגעשטעלט משפחות;
But since Pharaoh accepted their answer and did not proceed to punish them — what is then the reward and goodness that they will establish families,
for this would be the natural course in any case
(even without a special reward from the Holy One, blessed be He),
because so it was with all the Jews
("and the children of Israel were fruitful and swarmed and multiplied and became very, very mighty",
"and the people multiplied and became very mighty").
One must say that "and He made them houses" was a special reward and goodness,
not only that they would establish families
(houses),
but that they would establish special families and houses in Israel.
Therefore Rashi explains,
that "and He made them houses" means "houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty which are called houses",
and brings upon this the proof from a verse in the Prophets that "and he built the house of the Lord and the house of the king",
"priesthood and Levite from Yocheved and royalty from Miriam",
and concludes with his source for this — "as it is stated in tractate Sotah".
That is:
from the simple meaning of the verse it is compelled that "and He made them houses" does not mean literally
(establishing families)
but special houses
(as above);
(כנ"ל);
however, in order to know in what these special houses consisted,
Rashi needs to come to the Oral Torah — "as it is stated in tractate Sotah" — that this means "houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty etc.".
That is, that the teaching from tractate Sotah is not contrary to the plain meaning,
because the plain meaning compels that they were special houses,
the Gemara in tractate Sotah only specifies which special houses they were
(houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty).
Therefore he writes only "as it is stated in tractate Sotah"
(not "our Rabbis, may their memory be blessed, expounded" and the like),
because the explanation in the Gemara is entirely consistent with the plain meaning,
only the source for this is not from the plain meaning of the verses but from the Gemara.
And since Rashi already brings here
(from the Gemara)
that "and He made them houses" refers to houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty which come from Yocheved and Miriam,
and this is consistent with the plain meaning — he knows from this already also that the special Hebrew midwives Shifrah and Puah
(of whom the simple meaning of the verse compels that they were special women)
— were Yocheved and Miriam. Or one can say that he knows it from that "which was a tradition in their hands".
That is, it is not as the commentators of Rashi learn,
that Rashi's proof that Shifrah and Puah are Yocheved and Miriam is from what he writes later on "and He made for them houses" that this refers to the houses of Yocheved and Miriam
[and as discussed many times that the commentators learn the matters in Rashi in the manner of pilpul and derush etc.,
but primarily Rashi is the plain meaning of Scripture]
- rather, Rashi's proof is from that which the plain meaning of Scripture compels that Shifrah and Puah were not ordinary women,
but special women;
נאר ספעציעלע נשים;
and how does he actually know who they were - he knows it either from "that it was a tradition in their hands,"
or from what it says later "and He made for them houses,"
houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty of Yocheved and Miriam.
According to the above, one will also understand why Rashi quotes the words "and He made for them":
Although the source of Rashi
(in the plain meaning of Scripture)
that "and He made for them houses" refers specifically to houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty is "as it is brought in tractate Sotah,"
and this is not contrary to the plain meaning
(because the plain meaning compels that "and He made for them houses" means special houses,
as above)
- there is also a support for this from the plain meaning of Scripture itself,
from that which it says "and He made for them houses":
The usual expression in such a case is "and they had houses" or "and he built for them houses,"
as it says "if HaShem does not build a house, in vain do its builders labor on it,"
and the like - why does it say an unusual expression "and He made"?
Rather, the expression "and He made" emphasizes that thereby the Creator makes a new reality - "and He made" from the language of a new creation.
Which further compels one to say that here it is not speaking about simply establishing houses among Israel,
because then it should have said "and he built for them houses,"
"and they had houses,"
rather about creating and renewing a new reality and type of houses,
that the Creator repays the midwifery with the special reward of "and He made for them houses" - that He makes for them not ordinary houses as for all Jews,
rather He makes for them a new type of houses.
For which houses is it fitting to say that they are a new type of houses? It is fitting to say only for "houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty" - because then such a reality did not yet exist,
and in order for there to be a reality of such houses, a new creation from the Creator was required that He should first make them anew
("and He made").
And the explanation:
Now, the matter of houses of priesthood is a matter that is not natural.
That is, that after the Creator chose the tribe of Levi and the children of Aharon,
one who is born to a father who is a kohen,
he is consequently also a kohen:
But then
(in Egypt)
the entire reality of houses of priesthood did not yet exist
(a special house from which kohanim emerge).
Even after the exodus from Egypt, the service was still with the firstborns, not with the kohanim,
for the matter of firstborns is not a new reality,
rather a natural thing,
that the firstborn in every house of Israel
(regardless of which tribe and house he is from)
is the choicest and consequently he performs the service
[as the Rambam writes,
that "everything that is for the name of the good God" must be "from the beautiful and excellent etc. from the comely and good" as it says "all the fat is for HaShem").
But in order for the reality of houses of priesthood to exist - the Creator needed to make a new reality,
He needed to choose Aharon and his sons,
that they should be the kohanim.
So too, the matter of houses of Levite did not exist then,
and the Creator first needed to make a new reality of houses of Levite,
that should be separated from the rest of the tribes.
So too the houses of royalty
(the kingdom of the house of David,
from the house of Judah)
was not demolished;
איז דעמולט ניט געווען;
and were it not for this that the Most High had chosen the house of David, kings could have been from all the tribes,
and as the reality indeed is,
as the Rambam rules,
that there can be kings from all the tribes but the Most High specifically chose the house of David,
therefore specifically their kingdom is an eternal kingdom forever and ever.
That is, that in order that there should be houses of royalty
(the kingdom of the house of David)
the Most High needed to perform a new act of creation,
and in the language of the Scriptures - "I have found David My servant",
"David My servant whom I have chosen",
that is, that for this a new act of creation of the Holy One, blessed be He, was required.
Based on this it is understood that the expression "and He made for them houses" applies specifically to the three types of houses - houses of priesthood and Levites and royalty - because in order that there should be an existence of such houses, "and He made" was required,
that the Most High should establish them anew.
And this is the reward that the Most High paid Yocheved and Miriam for that "because the midwives feared God" - "and He made for them houses",
special houses that the Most High establishes anew - houses of priesthood and Levites
(Aaron and Moses)
from Yocheved,
and houses of royalty from Miriam.
And based on this it is also understood why Rashi in his commentary also quotes the words "and He made for them"
(even though he ostensibly only explains the words "houses")
- because the expression "and He made for them" provides support from the plain meaning of the verse for this
(which he brings from tractate Sotah)
that this speaks about houses of priesthood and Levites and royalty
(which require a new act of creation - "and He made"),
and this also strengthens the special reward that Yocheved and Miriam received.
And may it be His will that very soon Moses and Aaron should be with them,
in fulfillment of the prophecy "awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust" and they among them,
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah,
David the king Messiah,
and speedily in our very own days.
Afterward he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
