This farbrengen is connected with Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Sivan.
"Sivan" is the name of this month according to the "names of the months that came up with them from Babylon"1,
but in addition to the "names that came up with them from Babylon" each month has another name,
and on the contrary —
a name that the month had even before the descent into Babylon,
and even before the entry into the Land —
which are the names
(according to numbers)
ordinal numbers of the months as they stand in the Written Torah:
the month of Nissan is "this month shall be for you the beginning of months, it shall be for you the first of the months of the year"2,
the first month,
and the names of the rest of the months are in continuation of this number —
the month of Iyar is the second month,
the month of Sivan is the third month,
etc.
א.א.וו.
Some months also have names in the Holy Language in the Prophets and Writings,
like the month of "Ziv"3 and the like —
but all months are called in the Chumash according to ordinal numbers.
Regarding the ordinal number of the month of Sivan
(the third month)
one need not come to the calculation that the month of Nissan is "the first month" and consequently the month of Sivan is
(the third month from Nissan)
"the third month" —
because it is stated explicitly in the verse:
"In the third month after the children of Israel went out of the land of Egypt, on that day they came to the wilderness of Sinai."
[And the verse refers to Rosh Chodesh Sivan4 —
as the Gemara learns5 from the gezerah shavah "this this" that this refers to Rosh Chodesh Sivan,
"it is written here 'on that day they came to the wilderness of Sinai' and it is written there2 'this month [like this you shall see and sanctify6] shall be for you the beginning of months,
just as there it is Rosh Chodesh7, so too here it is Rosh Chodesh".]
Since Torah is from the word hora'ah (instruction)8 —
there must be an instruction from that which the Torah calls the month by the name "the third month".
As in all matters of Torah,
which is Torat Chayim (Torah of life),
an instruction in life,
and also Torat Emet (Torah of truth).
That is, in addition to that which Torah is Torat Chayim,
an instruction in life,
"for they are our life and the length of our days"9 —
it is also Torat Emet:
it gives instructions in life and says that "they are our life and the length of our days"
(and by conducting oneself according to the instructions one will receive reward etc.) —
not only in order to calm the person and the like,
but one should say that it is not necessarily that the instruction itself is not true, Heaven forbid,
rather all its instructions are true.
And the explanation of this:
In the education of children,
or in matters of medicine,
one of the ways in this —
since one speaks with a child and wants to influence him,
sometimes one tells him something that is only in order to calm, in order to soothe him,
but in essence this is not the truth,
and afterwards when he is already calmed one can speak to him further about true matters.
Similarly in medicine:
Sometimes there is a situation where the doctor does not yet have a cure for the patient at the moment. But one must calm him,
which is also relevant to his healing,
one gives him something,
or tells him something,
that calms him
(even though the thing itself is not true,
rather it is only in order to calm),
and afterwards,
later one can give him a cure etc.
And according to the laws of medicine and the like there is a place for such conduct
(that one should do something that is not true in order to calm the person).
Even that this is entirely upheld according to the law,
because "nothing stands before the saving of life etc."10,
saving a life overrides the entire Torah,
including also the prohibition of "distance yourself from a false word"11.
This, however, was all said regarding medicine or education;
דאס איז אבער אלץ גערעדט געווארן בנוגע צו רפואה אדער חינוך;
but when speaking about the Torah of Hashem,
it is certain that every instruction in life in the Torah —
"our life and the length of our days" —
is not only in order to calm the person
(that by conducting oneself thus he will have "our life and the length of our days"),
rather it is indeed a true "cure",
that truly effects,
and also the reward etc. for it is true.
And the difference is
(between medicine and education, and, by way of distinction, the Torah of Hashem):
The matter of medicine was given over to human beings,
flesh and blood,
who are bound by the laws of nature and the laws of medicine. Consequently,
when they do not have a cure for a patient,
they have no choice and they must sometimes use methods only to calm the patient, even though in essence this is not true;
האבן זיי קיין ברירה ניט און זיי מוזן דערוויילע נוצן דרכים נאר בכדי צו בארואיקן דעם חולה אע"פ וואס בעצם איז דאס ניט אמת;
however, the Holy One, blessed be He, is surely omnipotent,
and with Him there is no concept of having no choice —
consequently, He established the Torah in such a way that every directive that is there,
is a true directive that truly accomplishes,
and truly accomplishes "our life and the length of our days."
This also makes it understood regarding our matter:
Since the sequential names of the months are in the Torah —
one cannot say that they are names that are only due to lack of choice until the time comes when we will have the names of the months that came up with them from Babylon:
Rather, since they are in the Torah of truth,
they are certainly true in their own right,
and from this there is certainly a true directive in life;
און דערפון איז זיכער דא א הוראה אמיתית בחיים;
and since the Torah is eternal12 —
the sequential names are certainly eternal even after we have the names "that came up with them from Babylon,"
and consequently, from this there is a true and eternal directive in life in all generations,
also now.
And since "the main thing is the deed"13 —
the directive of "the third month" must come out in actual deed.
And this is a fundamental point in Torah that needs to be emphasized. Because, according to Torah there must also be understanding and comprehension and give-and-take and dialectic14,
a person could remain in the give-and-take and dialectic —
therefore one must emphasize that "the main thing is the deed,"
that it must come down into actual deed.
And on the contrary —
since a Jew is from "a wise and understanding people"15,
with him the main thrust is in intellect,
and the main thrust of intellect is specifically not in relation to actual deed,
specifically when there is not yet a clear halachah:
When it comes to a definitive halachic ruling,
then "if it is a halachah
(that you received from your teacher),
we accept"16,
and it is not possible for him to engage with it with his intellect<sup>17</sup>;
און ס'איז ניט שייך אז ער זאל זיך דינגען אין דעם מיט זיין שכל 17;
his intellect applies only "if it is for judgment,"
where "there is a response"18:
The thrust of understanding and comprehension, of intellect, is specifically when there are several lines of reasoning,
a reasoning this way and a reasoning that way,
and specifically reasonings in intellect,
and particularly true intellect,
the intellect of Torah,
until, according to Torah, both reasonings are "these and those are the words of the living God"19,
and the simple explanation of this is,
that the two reasonings in the Oral Torah are both founded on the Written Torah,
upon which applies "words of the living God." As one sees simply,
that when there is a dispute in the Gemara, each opinion brings a proof
(and proofs)
from verses in the Written Torah.
And specifically then,
when there are several reasonings,
this way and that,
and true reasonings,
until "these and those are the words of the living God" —
the thrust of intellect applies,
by delving into one reasoning and then into the second reasoning, etc.
However, after the halachah has been decided according to one opinion and reasoning,
no dialectic and give-and-take is possible regarding it.
Actually,
even though after the halachah has been decided, dialectic and give-and-take regarding how one must actually conduct oneself is not possible —
nevertheless, even then dialectic and give-and-take is possible.
As one sees in practice,
that in the Gemara there is give-and-take and dialectic in intellect also regarding the opinions that the halachah is not like them,
for example —
the opinion of Beit Shammai,
and when one studies the Gemara
(even after the halachah has been decided)
one also studies that part.
There is indeed the rule20 that when there is an extended dialectic and give-and-take regarding one opinion, it is a proof that the halachah is thus
(which is why one delves so much into it),
but this is specifically when there is an extended give-and-take;
אבער דאס איז דוקא בשעת ס'איז דא א שקו"ט ארוכה;
and one sees in practice that even regarding opinions that the halachah is not like them, there is give-and-take in the Gemara.
And all the more so in the poskim —
where there are also rules as to which is the primary opinion and who is the "yesh omrim" —
nevertheless, one delves also into the opinion that the halachah is not like him,
what its source is and what its reasoning is, etc.
But when one speaks about a ruling of halachah regarding action —
then there is no longer any place for pilpul and give-and-take in intellect,
because then the halachah is only according to one reasoning,
and not in a second manner or a third manner,
consequently all other reasonings fall away,
consequently there is no longer any place for debate and pilpul in intellect,
whether this reasoning is better or the other reasoning etc.
And with a halachic ruling one cannot bargain —
thus the halachah remains and thus one must conduct oneself in actual deed,
thus and not otherwise.
Therefore a Jew needs to have a primary and special emphasis —
who specifically engages in intellectual debate —
that the deed is the main thing,
that all the instructions in the Torah must be brought down into actual deed in a definite manner,
and not remain with the give-and-take and intellectual pilpulim in the matter.
And regarding our matter,
there must be an instruction in actual deed from that which the name of the month in the Written Torah is "the third month". And this instruction must already be learned while standing on Shabbat Mevarchim of the third month,
when one blesses the month.
And although the month is also called "Sivan",
and so one calls it in the blessing of the month —
this is connected with the blessing of the month,
i.e., with the realm of blessing and prayer;
ד.ה. מיטן שטח פון ברכה ותפלה;
but the name "the third month" stands in the Written Torah —
this is connected with the realm of Torah. And regarding learning an instruction in action —
it is specifically from Torah, from the word hora'ah (instruction),
i.e., from how the name of the month stands in the Torah.
But how one calls it in the blessing of the month,
in prayer,
this is a separate matter.
And the explanation of this:
The entirety of man's service to serve his Creator is divided into two lines —
prayer and Torah,
service from below upward and service from above downward:
Prayer is service from below upward,
that the man below takes all his matters and needs and elevates them from below upward through the request of his needs during prayer.
And as it is written21 "a ladder set upon the earth and its head reaches the heavens",
as explained in many places22 that this refers to the service of prayer,
which is like a ladder set upon the earth and its head reaches the heavens through which one elevates the matters below from below upward.
And as the matter is also in the simple meaning of the verses:
"A ladder set upon the earth and its head reaches the heavens" is stated regarding our father Yaakov
(in his dream)
when he was in a situation in which he specifically needed a prayer and request to the Most High that He should guard him and that all matters should be in perfection —
because it was after he fled from Esav,
and he went to Charan,
"And Yaakov went out from Be'er Sheva and went to Charan"23. And as it states afterwards —
that he said24 that the place is "the house of G-d and this is the gate of heaven",
"a place of prayer to raise their prayers heavenward"25,
and therefore he prayed there to the Most High and asked "If G-d will be with me and guard me on this way etc. and I will return in peace to my father's house"26.
[And afterwards there was the fulfillment of his request (a drawing down from above downward)].
This is no contradiction to what is stated in the Midrash27 that "the ladder is Sinai
(the letters of this are the letters of that)",
for Sinai indicates the drawing down of the Torah from above downward,
"From the heavens He made you hear His voice"28 —
because29 through this "ladder set upon the earth and its head reaches the heavens" there are both matters,
elevation from below upward
(prayer)
and drawing down from above downward
(Torah),
and the order is:
first "angels of G-d ascending... on it",
elevation from below upward,
and afterwards "descending on it",
drawing down from above downward.
As it was in actuality,
that first there was the prayer and request of our father Yaakov by means of the ladder,
elevation from below upward,
and in generations after this,
there was the matter of "Sinai"
("the ladder is Sinai"),
the drawing down of the Torah by means of the ladder from above downward.
And these are the two lines into which the entirety of man's service to serve his Creator is divided:
Prayer —
elevation from below upward,
the man below elevates all his matters and needs of below from below upward. And Torah —
drawing down from above downward,
that Torah gives instructions from above to a Jew down here how he should conduct himself in his daily life.
And the order of service is,
first prayer and then Torah
(as it was with the "ladder standing on the earth",
that first there were "ascending" and then "descending",
as mentioned above).
As this is in the order of a person's daily service —
"from the synagogue to the study hall"30,
first the matter of prayer in the synagogue,
and from there he then goes "from strength to strength"31,
to the study of Torah in the study hall.
Regarding this in our matter:
The two names of this month are connected with two distinct matters —
prayer and Torah:
In the blessing of the month, the month is called by the name "Sivan" —
because this is connected with prayer and blessing. But in the Written Torah, the month is called by the name "the third month". And in Torah it is also stated in connection with the matter of Torah —
"In the third month...
on this day they came to the Sinai desert" to receive the Torah.
Based on this, it is also understood that regarding our matter —
to derive a directive from this in actual deed —
this is primarily from the name in Torah "the third month":
Also in the matter of "Sivan" there is much discussion and debate,
but regarding practical halachah
(which is only in a defined manner,
and in this there is no discussion and debate,
as mentioned above) —
this is the matter of Torah from the term hora'ah (instruction),
drawing down from above to below,
it draws down the instructions from Above to a Jew here below.
And the directive for deed must be understandable to seemingly everyone,
from "your heads, your tribes" to "your wood hewer" and "your water drawer"*31. Because in addition to that which the entirety of the matter of Torah
(and especially that in our matter "in the third month" is connected with the Giving of the Torah)
is connected with every Jew,
"Torah was commanded to us by Moses, an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob",
this is an inheritance of every Jew down to the smallest of the small,
the matter of the unity of all Israel is also emphasized in "in the third month...
on this day they came to the Sinai desert etc."4 —
"and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain"32,
as interpreted by our Sages, may their memory be blessed33 —
"and he encamped
(in the singular) —
as one person with one heart".
Therefore the study from this must be understandable also to the smallest of the small,
and therefore it must be not in the manner of remez, drush, and sod,
but in the manner of pshat,
and in pshat itself —
not in deep pilpul. Rather in simple pshat,
in a way that every Jew
(even a child)
can derive from it a clear directive regarding actual deed.
The matter of "third"
("the third month")
a child understands simply:
One,
he understands simply,
means that there is only one thing,
therefore doubts, disputes, and choice are not applicable there,
because there is only one thing.
Two means,
that there is already a division and separation between two things,
because if there is no difference whatsoever between the two things —
they are not two,
and certainly not two in truth. And therefore,
it is understood that when there are two,
there is a place for dispute,
because either one goes according to the first or according to the second.
From this it is understood that with two comes the advantage of choice:
With one, choice is not applicable,
there is initially only one option,
therefore he has nothing to choose from. When there are two,
he can choose either the first or the second.
This is the entire advantage and achievement of a human being,
the speaking being —
that he is a being with free choice34,
because he has before him two paths:
An inanimate object has no choice,
it is compelled only in one manner.
But a human has the choice of two paths,
and he chooses one of them.
If for a human there were also only one path open —
there is no achievement in him over an inanimate object,
he is demoted like an inanimate object,
because he has no choice and is compelled to conduct himself in one manner
(he has no other path at all).
And one cannot say that the achievement of a human over an inanimate object
(even if the human has only one choice)
is that —
"I was created to serve my Master"35,
and the human serves his Master through that one manner —
because so it is also regarding an inanimate object,
as the Mishnah states36 "Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created only for His glory",
which "everything" includes also the animal species,
and also the plant species and the inanimate species.
The function of a human being relative to the inanimate is —
to serve his Creator through his choice. Through the fact that there is the concept of two,
and he uses his intellect and his powers to choose one of the two.
And as it is written37 —
"See, I have set before you today the life and the good" and the opposite path,
"and you shall choose38 life":
The Most High created both paths,
as even a simple person understands,
that the Most High created everything,
there is nothing in the world that the Most High did not create,
but the intention of creating two paths is —
that an I should show that he is from "a wise and understanding people" and use his intellect to select
(choose)
between the two paths —
"and you shall choose life".
And based on this, the concept of "See, I have set before you today the life and the good" and its opposite is understood,
at first glance:
"From the mouth of the Most High, evil does not issue"39 —
what does it mean that the Most High created evil,
also the second path which is the opposite of life and good?!
The verse itself continues and answers —
that the intention in this is "and you shall choose life",
that the entire reason why the Most High also created evil, is
(not so that one should conduct himself thus, Heaven forbid, but)
so that a person should come and show his virtues,
and he should choose life,
and not conduct himself in the opposite manner.
That is, the Most High indeed created both paths,
but with an essential difference:
the life and the good He created so that one should choose them and conduct himself accordingly,
but evil He created so that it should be a negative commandment,
so that one should show his own virtues and not conduct himself thus.
When one says to the simple person further —
"third",
he understands simply,
since "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create a single thing in vain"40,
this is not simply so,
rather there must be an intention in it.
Consequently, he understands simply:
If one is that there is no dispute and choice;
אויב איינס איז אז ס'איז ניטא קיין מחלוקת ובחירה;
and two is the concept that dispute is possible,
and consequently choice is possible —
then what is the concept of three? He understands —
that it reveals and explains more clearly the two paths which are good and which is the opposite of good,
so that he can know which of the two paths he should choose.
And the explanation of this is:
When one has only two paths,
there is indeed a place for choice,
to choose one of the two,
but one still needs a third thing
(which is not a part of either of the two)
that brings him and decides in which of the two he should choose.
For without this he cannot know which of the two he should choose,
because since the choice is in order to bring out the intellect and virtues of a Jew,
one must give him two similar paths,
where one cannot immediately see openly which of them is good and which is the opposite
(for if one could immediately see,
choice would not be possible),
and nevertheless he should demonstrate his virtues that he can know and choose life.
For example:
When it comes to light and darkness —
one does not need to resort to intellect to choose that this is light and this is darkness. One only needs healthy eyes to see what is light and what is darkness;
דארף מען אויף דעם ניט אנקומען צום שכל צו בוחר זיין אז דאס איז אור און דאס איז חושך. מ'דארף אויף דעם נאר האבן געזונטע אויגן קען מען זען וואס איז אור און וואס איז חושך;
When, however, the light is not so strong,
and the darkness is not so powerful,
or it is a state of mixture,
or twilight,
between the suns —
then one needs intellect to be able to discern what is light and what is darkness.
Simply put:
The evil inclination comes to him and does not tell him that if he commits sins he will go to Gehinnom,
because then the inclination would not fulfill its function,
whose function is to place a person in a trial so that he should choose, through his free choice, the path of life,
as is known the parable of the harlot,
as explained in the Zohar41 brought in Tanya42,
consequently, if the inclination would tell him that if he commits sins he will go to Gehinnom,
the person would certainly not obey him,
and thus the inclination would not carry out its function;
במילא וועט דער יצר אזוי ניט דורכפירן זיין תפקיד;
Rather, he comes to a person and tells him:
You live in this world and you can derive pleasure from it now,
and he brings a proof from what King Solomon says43 "For the lips of a strange woman drip honey."
Gan Eden —
the inclination tells him —
is something that will only be relevant after one hundred and twenty years,
and even then you are not sure whether you are going to Gan Eden or to the other place,
to the extent that even Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai said "I do not know on which path they are leading me"<sup>44</sup>;
ביז אז אפילו ר' יוחנן בן זכאי האט געזאגט "איני יודע באיזו דרך מוליכים אותי" 44;
however, pleasure in this world —
is a certain thing that you can have now —
so grab it,
"Snatch45 and eat"!
And the inclination adds:
It is written in the Torah itself "See, I have set before you today the life and the good" and its opposite —
consequently you see that according to the Torah you have two paths which you can choose,
and as mentioned,
the second path has an advantage —
argues the inclination —
that you have the pleasure immediately in this world!
From this we see that the two paths, in themselves, are in a manner that a person cannot know which one to choose. Because the inclination comes and makes them appear as two similar ways. Moreover —
that the path of the opposite of good has even more advantages relative to the first path. And the intention in this, that the two paths appear similar — is,
as mentioned,
so that an "I" should demonstrate its virtues and use its intellect in order to choose the correct path.
Therefore there must be a third thing
(which is not part of the other two),
which should illuminate for him and reveal the two paths,
what is good and what is evil,
and how he should choose.
And the third matter reveals the inner essence of the two paths,
that although the Most High created both paths,
nevertheless, the entire intention why the Most High created them —
is so that there should be free choice,
and the intention in the two ways is different:
The path of life and good a person must choose and conduct himself accordingly,
whereas the path opposite to this, its intention is that there should be a "do not do,"
that an "I" should demonstrate its virtues and choose not to conduct itself in this path.
That is, the matter of the third does not nullify one of the previous two,
but on the contrary —
it reveals their inner essence and thus decides between them:
When a person chooses the path of good and not the path of evil,
it is not that he nullifies the path of evil,
but on the contrary —
he reveals its inner intention,
that its entire purpose is only to bring out the powers of the Jew and that he should not conduct himself in this path.
And the explanation of "three" is the same as is explained in the books,
that the matter of peace is specifically connected with three:
When there is only one,
peace is not applicable —
everything is one. When there are two, there is only division. Three makes peace between the two,
by the third revealing and explaining the truth of the two.
As this is in the study of Torah —
"Two46 verses that contradict each other until the third verse comes and decides between them":
True "decision" does not mean that it rules like one and negates the other. Rather, both verses
(which inherently contradict each other)
"agree" together according to the decision of the "third verse."
Just as the matter of "third" is in the totality of man's service
(choice)
and in the study of Torah
(the third verse) —
so too it is expressed in time —
in the days47:
"One day" —
It states in the Midrash48 that the first day of Maaseh Bereishis is called not "day one" but "one day"49 —
"on which the Holy One, blessed be He, was alone in His world",
then there was only G‑dliness,
only one thing,
consequently there was then no place for choice.
By "second day" it does not say "that it was good" because then Gehinnom was created,50
the matter which is the opposite of Gan Eden. Then there were two things,
which gives a place for choice. But then it is possible to choose also in the opposite side, G‑d forbid.
On the third day "that it was good" was doubled,51
then the choice in the side of good was opened. However, the plain meaning is not that the third day nullified the matter of the second day,
rather then "that it was good" was doubled,52
because this reveals the good that exists in the innerness also on the second day.
So too is this in the months:53
In the first month
(the month of Nissan)
"the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He, was revealed to them in His glory and His very Self and redeemed them"54 —
only one thing —
the revelation of G‑dliness, etc.
Then comes the second month
(the month of Iyar) —
as an ordinal number, second,
not a number of inclusion as in Sefiras HaOmer —
"today is two days of the Omer",
"three days of the Omer", etc. —
because the second month is a separate thing from the first month,
consequently it turns out that in the second month the matter of division comes —
two separate things,
the first month and the second month. Consequently there is then a place for choice, etc.
Then comes the third month which mediates between them. And in the aforementioned manner —
that it does not negate or nullify one of them,
rather it reveals their innerness and consequently it mediates and makes peace between them.
And even though the third month mediates between them, it is called "the third month"
(as an ordinal number),
separate from the first two,
and not "three" that it includes them within itself,
like by "two verses that contradict each other" and "let the third verse come and mediate between them" —
because:
"Two verses that contradict each other" does not mean merely that there is a difference and a superficial contradiction from one verse to the other,
and if one toils in the two verses themselves one will reconcile between them,
rather one must come to a third verse,
and were it not for the third verse they would truly contradict each other.
That is, that from the perspective of the two verses in themselves
(in their place)
there would never be a mediation,
and on the contrary —
from their perspective they "contradict each other",
rather the mediation comes by means of there being a third verse that "lifts" the two verses to its level, and from this perspective that the two contradicting verses are included in the third verse
(which is different from how they are in themselves in their place) —
a mediation is made between them.
That is, the plain meaning is not that also after the mediation all three verses are in the same level and all contribute to the mediation —
rather they remain separate,
therefore it is called "the third verse",
separate from the first two contradicting verses,
and not "three" which means that all three are on the same level.
And from this it is understood regarding "the third month".
According to the above explanation of the matter of "the third month", one will also understand its connection with the general matter of the Giving of the Torah which was in the third month —
"In the third month ... they came to the Sinai desert" in order to receive the Torah,
from which it is understood that the matter of Torah has a special connection with "third",
As our Sages, of blessed memory,55 say and emphasize: "Blessed is the Merciful One who gave the threefold Torah to a threefold people through a third [Moshe] on the third day in the third month"56:
"The entire Torah was given to make peace in the world"
(as per the ruling of the Rambam57 from the Sifri58).
And the matter of peace pertains specifically when there is division,
"two",
and the "third" unites and mediates and makes peace between them. It turns out that Torah is connected with three,
because specifically Torah brings about peace in the world.
That is, that the intention according to Torah is,
that there must be a state of "two",
division
(because without this the matter of peace is not possible),
and specifically in the place of division one must bring in peace through the Torah.
And this was the accomplishment of the Giving of the Torah —
that it brought peace into the world.
From the fact that it is said that "the Torah was given to make peace in the world," it is understood that in the world, by itself, the concept of peace does not exist,
and specifically the Torah was given to make peace in the world,
because the world, by its very nature, was created in a manner of division
("two"),
and therefore,
during the twenty-six generations from the creation of the world until the Giving of the Torah, when the Torah was not given in the world, there was no peace in the world. And it is understood that if it could have been otherwise
(that there could be peace in the world without the Torah)
it would certainly have been so;
וואלט זיכער אזוי געווען;
from this it is understood that without the Torah, the concept of peace cannot exist in the world.
And after the twenty-six generations, there was the Giving of the Torah,
and this accomplished peace in the world —
the concept of "third."
And the explanation of this in more detail:
As a preparation for the Giving of the Torah, the Jewish people said "we will do and we will hear" 59.
That is, that first of all, the foundation of the entire Torah is that one accepts upon oneself to fulfill it in actual deed
(we will do),
without regard to how it appears in the intellect. Afterwards, however, this cannot remain only in "we will do" from the aspect of acceptance of the yoke and that one need not do more,
rather there must be "we will hear,"
from the term comprehension and understanding —
since a person has an intellect,
he must utilize it to learn and understand Torah,
until he utilizes his entire capacity of intellect —
through pilpul and give-and-take in the study of Torah.
And the difference between "we will do"
(actual deed)
and "we will hear"
(comprehension and understanding)
is analogous to the aforementioned difference between one,
two and three:
When it comes to practical halachah in actual deed, there is only one manner in this,
and division and other opinions etc. are not applicable to this —
all must conduct themselves according to how the halachah is
(as above, section 4).
This is analogous to the concept of one.
But after the preface of "we will do," there must also be "we will hear" —
that one must study Torah with comprehension and understanding of the human intellect,
and as the Rambam also emphasizes at the beginning of his book —
"The foundation of foundations and the pillar of wisdoms is to know
(and not "to believe" 60)
that there is a First Existence, etc.,"
and similarly he writes in the Counting of the Mitzvos at the beginning of the book Yad, "The first commandment...
to know that there is a God,"
And the essence of the study of Torah with comprehension and understanding of the intellect is specifically connected with division,
with many opinions,
one opinion here and another opinion there. And in general, "their opinions are not equal" 61,
there is a difference between how one person understands Torah and how another understands it. This is analogous to the concept of "two,"
division of opinions to here and to there.
And specifically then the concept of "choice" is applicable —
that one should choose one opinion over the other. As discussed earlier, specifically when there are several opinions,
where each opinion is according to intellect and according to Torah,
and one does not see openly and immediately which opinion is closer to the truth,
for example —
as above, that the light and darkness are not so powerful —
specifically then the concept of the intellect engaging in pilpul in the opinions is applicable.
And the intention is —
that from the give-and-take and pilpul in the differing opinions,
and because "their opinions are not equal" —
one should arrive at a conclusion,
the practical halachah. This is analogous to the concept of "third" which decides and unifies all the opinions;
די הלכה בפועל. וואס דאס איז בדוגמא ווי דער ענין פון "שלישי" המכריע והמאחד די אלע סברות;
unity that comes after division.
And based on this, the connection of the Torah specifically with "third" is understood,
the concept of peace
(the entire Torah was given to make peace in the world) —
because the main concept of the study of Torah is comprehension and understanding
("we will hear") —
where there is the concept of "third" which decides and unifies after the division of opinions to here and to there. This is the concept of peace,
which applies specifically when there is a division,
and afterwards comes the third concept which makes peace between them.
When there is only the concept of deed and practical halachah,
which is only "one" —
it is not possible to make peace in this,
there is no one between whom to make peace;
ס'איז ניטא צווישן וועמען מאכן שלום;
specifically when there is "we will hear," the division from the aspect of comprehension and understanding in opinions to here and to there,
and the division of "their opinions are not equal" —
then it is possible to say that the entire Torah was given to make peace in the world,
to make peace between the various opinions and people.
And in addition to this:
Regarding "Naaseh" —
which comes from the simple faith of Jews —
no choice applies. Because Jews are by nature "believers, children of believers"62,
and as the ruling of the Rambam63 that every Jew fundamentally desires to fulfill the will of Hashem,
consequently they have only one option,
therefore no choice applies in this. The only choice he has in this is merely —
that it could be that "his evil inclination overpowered him"
(as the Rambam writes there),
he must remove the coercion of the evil inclination,
but with this he only reveals his true will.
However, regarding "Nishma",
the study of Torah with understanding and comprehension —
where there are rational arguments on both sides —
there, the concept of "choice" applies
(in the intellect),
that he should labor with his intellect until he selects between the rational arguments and arrives at a decision and conclusion —
the third element that decides and unifies.
Based on the above, one will also understand the connection of "And Israel encamped there opposite the mountain" —
which occurred "in the third month, on the first of the month" —
with "the third month"
(the concept of unity that emerges after division)64:
"In the third month, on the first of the month, they came to the Sinai desert... and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain." It states in Rashi
(in general65 —
from the Mechilta) on the verse
(as mentioned above):
"And Israel encamped there —
as one man with one heart,
but all the other encampments were with complaints and strife." And in the Tanchuma66 he adds,
that when the Holy One, blessed be He, saw that Jews stood in unity, only then did He give them the Torah.
And at first glance, the entire matter is perplexing:
It states in the Ra"n67 that when leaving Egypt, the Jews stood with a desire and longing for "you shall serve God on this mountain"68,
and therefore they counted the days,
the first day after leaving Egypt —
"today is one day",
the second day —
"today is two days",
etc.
א.א.וו.
[And from this emerges the concept of the Counting,
as explained in the Ra"n].
Now, since all Jews stood with a desire to go and arrive at the same place —
"you shall serve God on this mountain" —
how is it possible to say that from their departure from Egypt until their arrival at Mount Sinai, "all the encampments were with complaints and strife"?!
One will understand it based on what is said after the Counting of the Omer —
"May it be Your will... that in the merit of the Counting of the Omer that I counted today, that which I blemished in the Counting be rectified
(the specific one pertaining to that night [Chesed sheb'Chesed,
until Malchus sheb'Malchus])
and I will be purified and sanctified with the holiness of Above,
and through this, abundant bounty will flow in all the worlds, etc.":
Although all the days of the Counting are counted with the same general intention —
(also)
as preparation for the Giving of the Torah,
nevertheless, in this itself, there is a different manner on each day —
different forty-nine manners
(seven times seven Sefiros),
each day corresponding to a different Sefirah,
beginning from Chesed sheb'Chesed,
then Gevurah sheb'Chesed,
until Malchus sheb'Malchus.
And likewise regarding the Jews leaving Egypt:
They all stood with a desire for the same thing —
the Giving of the Torah,
but in this itself, there were differences between them in the manner of the desire,
for their opinions are not equal,
consequently, in the desire itself, there were forty-nine manners,
from Chesed sheb'Chesed until Malchus sheb'Malchus.
And therefore,
when leaving Egypt, "all the encampments" were "with complaints and strife."
But when it came to "in the third month, on the first of the month" —
that "third" has the property to make peace and unity from division,
and the Torah was given to make peace in the world,
consequently, when the Jews stood "opposite the mountain",
Mount Sinai
(where the Giving of the Torah took place),
and "in the third month, on the first of the month" —
it effected among the different types of Jews the novelty that "and he encamped
(encamped in the singular)
there, Israel, opposite the mountain —
as one man with one heart."
And although this was still on the first of the third month,
before they had reached the completeness of the forty-nine aspects —
malchus sheb'malchus —
nevertheless at that time (on Rosh Chodesh) there was already tiferes sheb'malchus,
the forty-fifth day of the counting,
and as explained in Torah Ohr 69 the concept regarding this,
that already "in this week, on the third day thereof, it is as if the entire week has already entered, etc." because in tiferes sheb'malchus (the third Rosh Chodesh) "it is as if all the nine sefiros of this week have been completed and have entered malchus",
and therefore "there is in it something of the totality of the forty-nine gates".
From this is understood the instruction in actual deed, standing on Shabbos Mevarchim the third month
(Sivan) —
"In the third month, on the first of the month, etc., and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain",
"as one man with one heart":
At the time one blesses the month, one must know what one is blessing. One says to a Jew that one is blessing the third month,
[In the text of the blessing and prayer, one indeed says the month of Sivan —
because this is connected with prayer,
as above,
and as explained in the books of Kabbalah and in many places the concept of Sivan;
וכמבואר בספרי קבלה ובכ"מ דער ענין פון סיון;
but regarding an instruction in actual deed —
one must extract from this how the month is called in the Torah, the language of instruction,
as above],
That its concept of "third" is —
unity after division.
And it is also emphasized in the very concept of the blessing of the month in prayer:
The entire congregation,
the whole assembly,
including "the people who are in the fields"
(as explained in Maseches Rosh Hashanah 70) —
which is the unity of all Israel after the division of separate individuals —
bless the month,
"renew it" etc.,
and afterwards say "and let us say Amen",
that all are together in agreement to say "Amen",
and they actually say "Amen",
which is the completion of the victory,
as explained at the conclusion of Maseches Nazir.
So the instruction from this is:
A Jew must go out into the world, into the street,
the public domain 71,
to the place of division,
where there are people with different opinions etc. —
and there make peace through Torah,
until among everyone there should be a state of "as one man with one heart". And in general —
the concept of love of Israel,
that "Love your fellow as yourself" 72 is a "great principle in the Torah" 73,
and "this is the entire Torah" 74 —
love of Israel until the unity of Israel.
It is not enough that he remain within his own four cubits,
which according to law has the status of a private domain,
and also it is not enough that he decide to go out and act in the street of the public domain —
rather "the entire Torah was given to make peace in the world" —
he must actually go out into the public domain and there make peace through the Torah.
Which is in addition to the instruction regarding oneself:
Since "the trait of the Beinoni is the trait of every person, and after him every person should draw" 75,
where with a Beinoni "both [inclinations] judge him" 76 —
he must make peace between his good inclination and evil inclination,
i.e., not to nullify the evil inclination,
but to cause that even he should agree to the will of the good inclination,
to fulfill the commandments of the Torah.
And standing on Shabbos Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh the third month,
when one blesses and takes powers for the service of "In the third month, on the first of the month, etc., and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain",
"as one man with one heart" —
One must already accept a good resolution in this, to make among all people in the "public domain" the concept of "as one man with one heart".
But the resolution must be specifically in a manner of in order to do,
it is not sufficient with thought and speech alone,
rather it must come down into a unity in actual deed.
And it is also emphasized in the matter that was "In the third month, on the first of the month":
Following "In the third month, on the first of the month" the verse states "And they journeyed from Rephidim and came to the wilderness of Sinai etc.",
and following that it states "And Israel encamped there opposite the mountain".
Chazal say 77 that "Rephidim" is because "they weakened their hands from words of Torah". The well-known question on this is:
What is the connection between "words of Torah" and "their hands"?
Torah is connected with understanding and comprehension,
or as it comes down into a person's feeling —
desire in the heart and the like,
but what is the connection of this to "their hands"?
So my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, explains 78 the emphasis in this —
that the main intent of the Torah is,
that this must come down into actual deed,
into "their hands",
whose concept is actual deed.
The lesson and instruction from this is that the matter of "and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain,"
"as one man with one heart"
(which follows "and they journeyed from Rephidim") —
must come to actual deed.
And simply —
that every Jew makes the proper preparations for the Giving of the Torah and for the Receiving of the Torah,
through being united with all Jews in the unity of Israel as a preparation for the Giving of the Torah,
"opposite the mountain,"
and through this one has the proper preparation for receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness,
with joy and goodness of heart,
"as one man with one heart."
The above is an instruction from the Shabbat of blessing the third month in every year.
In addition, there are variations in the determination of the years from year to year —
both regarding the day of the week on which Rosh Chodesh occurs,
and consequently when Shavuot occurs,
and also regarding the weekly Torah portion.
This year Rosh Chodesh Sivan occurs —
on the sixth day of the week. And consequently the first day of Shavuot occurs —
on the fourth day of the week. Since all matters are with Divine Providence,
it is certain that also these details are exact,
and from this there must be an instruction.
And as discussed many times,
that although the instruction from this is learned specifically from the determination of this year,
it is nevertheless an instruction from the eternal Torah,
consequently it is an eternal instruction for all years,
and in the language of the yeshivas —
a "continuous effect." The difference is only,
that in this year it is revealed and emphasized,
but from this we learn for all years.
For example79 as this is regarding the holiday of Pesach,
"the head of the festivals"80:
Although the main impact of the Exodus from Egypt is during the days of Pesach,
and specifically then we perform the "Seder of Pesach,"
with drinking the four cups and eating the three matzot etc. —
it is nevertheless drawn down for the entire year,
and therefore we mention the Exodus from Egypt every day,
by day and by night81,
and even for the future82:
Similarly regarding "the time of the Giving of our Torah":
The main impact of the Giving of the Torah is at the time of the Giving of our Torah. But this is drawn down for the entire year —
as we say every day "He gives the Torah" in the present tense83.
And likewise it is also understandable regarding the determination of the days of the week on which the time of the Giving of our Torah occurs —
this year on the fourth day —
that this is an instruction for the entire year and for all years.
And the instruction from this
(as mentioned above)
must be for every Jew,
from "your heads, your tribes,"
and "your little ones and your wives,"
until "your hewer of wood" and "your drawer of water"*31.
That is, both for the smallest of the small,
and for the greatest of the great,
although the great have certainly already engaged in Torah study in a lofty manner,
there must come to them
(also)
an instruction in their service from the special determination of the time of the Giving of our Torah in this year.
The lesson of the fourth day —
and with an introduction:
Regarding the general days of the week
(Sunday,
Monday etc.)
the question is known:
"Behold, tens of thousands of days have passed from the six days of creation until now, so how can we say today is Sunday etc."?84
The Alter Rebbe explains84,
that "every Sunday is literally Sunday like the Sunday of the six days of creation etc.,"
therefore each week begins anew with Sunday —
corresponding to that Sunday of the act of creation,
Monday —
corresponding to Monday of the act of creation etc.
And therefore the "song that the Levites would say every day in the Temple"85 corresponds to what was on that particular day of the act of creation:
"On the first day they would say 'To Hashem is the earth and its fullness'" —
"because it is the beginning of the act of creation"86 etc. —
because on each day of the week, what occurred on that day in the act of creation is repeated.
Based on this, it follows that when Shavuot this year occurs on the fourth day of the week, then the matters that occurred on the fourth day of the act of creation are repeated. And according to this, one will be able to understand the instruction from this.
Regarding the fourth day of the act of creation it is written in the Torah87:
"And God made the two great luminaries,
the great luminary etc. and the small luminary etc.,
and God placed them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth" —
"on the fourth day the luminaries were suspended"88.
Here one sees a contradiction:
Until the fourth day, the entire world was with creations without the “to illuminate the earth” of the two great luminaries. From this it seemingly follows that it is not necessary from the perspective of “world” that there should be two great luminaries to illuminate the earth,
and the proof is that until the fourth day the Supreme One did not place them in the firmament. On the other hand —
when the fourth day comes, then the matter of “the great luminaries were hung to illuminate the earth” comes,
because now one needs to have this.
From this there is a general directive in the service of man:
A person should not say,
since until now there was not a specific matter in the world,
in our case —
the matter of “to illuminate the earth” by means of the two great luminaries,
and this was not in the world because the Supreme One did not place it there —
this is a proof that also further on it must be so,
rather he must know that when the proper time comes —
then a new thing must come into the world —
that there must be the “to illuminate the earth.”
For this is the task of a Jew —
that he should be a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation89:
Even if the Supreme One has already created an entire world,
and in the manner of “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created”90,
“generations” is written plene91,
meaning that it is a world in its fullness —
nevertheless the Supreme One created it in a manner of “which God created to do —
to rectify”92,
so that I should be a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He,
and effect a rectification and addition in the world that the Supreme One created. And through the service of man in the world, there comes about “These are the generations of Perez”93,
“generations” is written plene91,
and the “plene generations” is more perfect than the “plene generations” of “These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created” by the Holy One, blessed be He.91
And as the words of our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing94, that the world was created like a “colonnade”,
whose three sides are closed and fenced, and “the northern side is not enclosed”. And the reason for this is explained in the Midrash95:
If someone comes and says “He is God”,
they will answer him —
on the contrary,
the northern side remains,
which needs to have a rectification,
let him rectify and complete it!
And the inner explanation of this is —
according to the explanation in Chassidus96 on the statement of our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing97, “could be like Me”,
that this is with satisfaction,
that a Jew can be “like Me”,
as our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing, said98, “the righteous are similar to their Creator”,
and “just as the Holy One, blessed be He, creates worlds, so too your father
(Jacob)
creates worlds”99,
just as the Supreme One created worlds,
so too “whoever looks into the Torah and toils in it,
as it were, sustains the entire world”100.
From this one sees that a Jew has the power and must add and complete even in the creation of the Holy One, blessed be He.
That is, even when there is already a world in its fullness —
a Jew must add to it —
“to illuminate the earth.”
And as our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing, said101 on the verse102 “The earth feared and was still” —
“If it feared, why was it still, and if it was still, why did it fear? Rather, at first it feared and afterwards it was still. And why did it fear?...
For it is written103, ‘And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.’ Why is the extra ‘the’ needed?
It teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, made a condition with the work of creation and said to them: If Israel accepts the Torah, you will endure, and if not, I will return you to chaos and void.”
That is:
Notwithstanding that there was already an entire world, for here “earth
(feared and was still)
” refers to the entire world,
also to the heavens and all their hosts,
as is understood simply] that the Supreme One created,
and in the world there were the Patriarchs who “they are the chariot”103,
and Moshe and Aharon —
nevertheless the world trembled
(“the earth feared”)
and shook for twenty-six generations,
until even when there was the matter of the giving of the Torah
(from above)
the world was still “fearing”;
איז די וועלט נאך אלץ געווען "יראה";
only after they “accepted” the Torah,
“on the sixth day”,
the known sixth104,
the day of the acceptance of the Torah —
then it was “still”,
the world became calm!
One sees that specifically through the service of Jews —
the acceptance of the Torah by the children of Israel –
completeness comes to the entire world,
even to a world created by the Holy One, blessed be He,
and to a world that had the Patriarchs and Moshe and Aharon!
And based on this, the lesson from the fact that the giving of the Torah and the acceptance of the Torah was on the fourth day is understood:
Not looking at the fact that the world created by the Holy One, blessed be He, already stood for three days without the great luminaries to shine upon the earth –
Then on the fourth day it came that the luminaries were hung to shine upon the earth.
Regarding this, it must be in the service of man:
Not looking at what there is a world that the Almighty created and it has already stood for a duration of time etc. –
Nevertheless, he must come and become a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation and perform the "to rectify" in the world,
by adding through his service more in "to shine upon the earth",
in illuminating the world.
And the "to shine upon the earth" through the service of man must be through the "two great luminaries",
the sun and the moon
[which also the moon is called in the eternal Torah "the great luminary" even after the diminution of the moon –
because relative to the stars it is great105.
And the concept in this in the service of man:
The two great luminaries in Torah are –
the Written Torah and the Oral Torah106:
Just as the moon receives from the sun,
so too the Oral Torah
(is founded and)
receives from the Written Torah –
"From where are these words,
as the verse says",
there is nothing that is not hinted at in the Torah107.
On the other hand:
A person can receive in inwardness specifically the light of the moon and not the light of the sun
(in a direct manner).
As the simple meaning of the matter:
A person can look only at the moon,
but regarding the sun, on the contrary:
Not only can he not look at the sun and cannot receive the light of the sun
(in a direct manner),
but when he looks at the sun –
it harms him.
As this applies in halachah:
The sanctification of the moon is performed every month,
and before this one looks at the moon *107.
But the blessing of the sun is performed only once in twenty-eight years108,
and it is understood that even at the time one looks at the sun it is not with such intensity as looking at the moon
(since it is more difficult to look at the sun,
as above).
Regarding this, it is also regarding the Written Torah and the Oral Torah
(sun and moon in Torah):
Although the holiness of the Written Torah is greater than the holiness of the Oral Torah,
for which reason one may place a Chumash on a Mishnayos but not the reverse *108, nevertheless regarding the understanding and comprehension and inward perception of a person, this applies specifically as the Written Torah is expressed in the Oral Torah,
but not in the Written Torah itself.
As we see in practice,
that the Written Torah is not so connected with understanding and comprehension in human intellect,
unlike the Oral Torah.
And in order for a person to know an instruction how to fulfill a mitzvah in practice, it is not enough to study the Written Torah,
rather he must study the explanation of the Written Torah in the Oral Torah109.
As this is regarding the sun and moon:
Specifically through the light of the sun coming forth in the light of the moon –
it does not burn the world,
rather it becomes the rectification and sustenance of the world
(as above).
And these two things –
both luminaries,
the Written Torah and the Oral Torah –
must come together,
until they become one thing. The Karaites separated between the Written Torah and the Oral Torah, may G-d forbid,
but in the true reality of matters, it is one Torah for all of it,
the Written Torah and the Oral Torah,
until as it states in the Yerushalmi110
(as discussed in the farbrengen of before111)
on the verse112 "from this side and from that side they were written",
that in the tablets was engraved the entire Torah,
including everything that a diligent student will innovate in the future113.
And based on this, the lesson of the fourth day is understood –
that the "to shine upon the earth" through the service of man must be with both luminaries of the Written Torah and the Oral Torah together,
i.e., that I must illuminate the world
(more than the world has in itself)
with the instructions of the Written Torah and the Oral Torah.
And the "to shine upon the earth" must be not only with spiritual light,
but also with physical light in its simple sense.
What this is connected with the portion that is read before "the time of the giving of our Torah":
The portion of Bechukosai is always read before Atzeret
(the festival of Shavuos)114,
only because of the curses in it, one interrupts with the portion of Bamidbar115.
From this it is understood that the portion of Bechukotai has a connection specifically with Atzeret,
therefore it must be read every time before Atzeret. And simply, the reason is:
Before the time of the giving of our Torah,
when the commandments were given to the Jewish people,
one must know that "If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and do them"116
("'If' is nothing other than an expression of supplication" *116),
then there will be "I will give your rains in their time, etc."117,
"I will give peace in the land"118,
with all the blessings enumerated there,
until "I will lead you upright"119,
as it will be in completeness with the coming of Mashiach our righteousness.
That is, before the giving of the Torah a Jew must know,
that through his study of Torah and fulfillment of the commandments he brings about "to illuminate the earth" not only spiritually,
but also physically –
that there will be "I will give your rains in their time" and "I will give peace in the land",
until "I will lead you upright" with the coming of Mashiach our righteousness.
Until one then comes to the Book of Countings
(the name of the entire book of Bamidbar)120,
"Countings" in the plural,
because it includes all the censuses of the children of Israel,
including the tenth census121 in the true and complete redemption through Mashiach our righteousness,
when then all Jews come into our holy land,
"a land which etc. the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"122,
and to Jerusalem the holy city,
"the city of the great King"123,
and "to the mountain of the House of Hashem"124,
when then there will also be "and nations shall walk by your light"125,
and there will be "a new Torah shall go forth from Me"126,
and Mashiach will teach all the people127,
including Moshe Rabbeinu
(as the Alter Rebbe explains128,
and the Mitteler Rebbe elaborates on this at length129),
speedily in our days, literally.
Discourse (in the manner of a talk)
beginning "And Hashem spoke, 'Lift up the head etc.'"
It is also customary to study a matter in the weekly portion together with Rashi –
an explanation in the words of Rashi,
or why Rashi does not explain a matter that requires explanation according to the plain meaning and does not even write "I do not know" or "I do not know"
(as in several places130).
As discussed many times, Rashi established a rule131 that "I have come only for the plain meaning of the verse",
which means that through his commentary one must understand the plain meaning of the verse in its completeness. From this it is understood that Rashi must address all matters that are not understood in the plain meaning,
or write "I do not know". And consequently, when there is a matter that requires explanation in the plain meaning and Rashi does not explain it at all –
one must know why,
whether because the five-year-old understands it from what he has previously learned,
or he understands it on his own.
It is also customary to speak about a matter in connection with the notes on the Zohar of our portion. And on the Shabbats when it is customary to study Pirkei Avot –
also a Mishnah in the appropriate chapter.
In our portion there is a most perplexing matter in the plain meaning of the verse,
and the proof is that Ibn Ezra,
who is among the literalists of the verse
(and other commentators)
dwells upon it,
and even with great length
(contrary to his custom to write with extreme brevity),
but Rashi,
who is "the interpreter of the Torah"132,
does not dwell upon it:
In our portion the tribes are counted three times, and each time in a different order:
At the beginning of the portion133 the princes of the tribes are counted,
prince for the tribe of Reuben,
Shimon,
Yehudah,
Yissachar,
Zevulun, Yosef
(Ephraim and Menasheh),
Binyamin, Dan, Asher, Gad,
Naftali. And this alone is already a question –
why are they counted in this order,
which is neither according to the order of their birth,
nor according to the order of the matriarchs?!
Afterwards it states how Moshe counted the Jews –
"as Hashem commanded Moshe, and he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai"134. And the order is different:
the children of Reuben,
the children of Shimon,
the children of Gad,
the children of Yehudah,
the children of Yissachar,
the children of Zevulun. The children of Yosef
(the children of Ephraim and the children of Menasheh),
the children of Binyamin,
the children of Dan,
the children of Asher,
the children of Naftali.
Afterwards the tribes are counted according to their banners –
and again in a third order:
The banner of the camp of Yehudah,
"and those encamping alongside him, the tribe of Yissachar etc., the tribe of Zevulun"135. The banner of the camp of Reuben,
"and those encamping alongside him, the tribe of Shimon etc., and the tribe of Gad"136. The banner of the camp of Ephraim,
"and alongside him, the tribe of Menasheh etc., and the tribe of Binyamin"137. The banner of the camp of Dan,
"and those encamping alongside him, the tribe of Asher etc., and the tribe of Naftali"138.
Counted three times –
and in three different orders!
And as mentioned,
even the first time alone is already a question on the order,
all the more so when three times that one counts them,
is this each time with a different order?!
And Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah stops on this and elaborates on it.
Certainly this is a question that arises for a five-year-old when he learns the verses,
and nevertheless Rashi does not stop on this!
Seemingly, the advice for this is –
that one should look in the commentators of Rashi.
Firstly –
I looked and found nothing there. And secondly –
as discussed many times,
one cannot say that Rashi relied that in a few hundred years
(after Rashi's time)
the "Sifsei Chachamim" or the Ra"am would come,
or the "Gur Aryeh",
and explain his intention!
One must say that since Rashi does not answer it, the five-year-old studying Scripture understands it either from what he learned previously,
or on his own, etc.
In the glosses on the Zohar of our portion, there is a brief gloss where he directs to look in his glosses on the Zohar of Parshat Kedoshim:
In the Zohar of our portion139 it says: "After he arose, he entered the synagogue, adorned with frontlets
(tefillin)
covered with the covering of tzitzit
(tallit)
". The commentators of the Zohar140 question this,
how does it accord with the halachah141 that one first puts on the tallit and then the tefillin.
My father, in his glosses, also addresses this142 and directs:
"See what is noted, with the help of Heaven, above in Parshat Kedoshim page 1 column 1". There too in the Zohar it states the order: "When a person dons tefillin and wraps himself in the covering of the mitzvah". And in his glosses on this, my father writes143:
"And it can be said: 'and wraps himself in the covering of the mitzvah' –
the intention is not the donning of the tallit
(for in truth the donning of the tallit must be before the donning of tefillin),
but rather that which he covers the tefillin after he has donned them with the tallit, as stated in the Mishnah Berurah, Laws of Donning Tefillin, chapter 2, end of paragraph 9, see there",
and as it also states in halachah144 that after donning the tefillin, one covers the head tefillin with the tallit.
He does not, however, explain
(as discussed many times)
the lesson from this in the service of man.
And as will be explained below.
This Shabbat we study the fifth chapter. In Mishnah 12
(according to the division of the Mishnayot of the old Rebbe in his Siddur,
which in any case differs from the division in other Mishnayot145)
it states:
"Four traits among students:
quick to hear and quick to lose – his gain is offset by his loss;
slow to hear and slow to lose – his loss is offset by his gain;
quick to hear and slow to lose – this is a good portion;
slow to hear and quick to lose – this is a bad portion."
One must understand:
a) And with an introduction:
In the Mishnayot in general, Rabbi did not include all the statements of the Tannaim,
as explained in the Epistle of Rav Sherira Gaon,
and as is also obvious simply. And as the Alter Rebbe writes in his Hilchot Talmud Torah146:
"There was not brought from it
(from all the dialectic of the Tannaim, etc.)
in the Talmud except a minute amount,
as we find in chapter two of Shabbat147 regarding Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, that for every difficulty of Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair he offered twenty-four resolutions,
and such is not found in all our Talmuds,
and Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi posed twenty-four difficulties on every statement of Rabbi Yosi148 and we do not find in the entire Talmud twenty-four difficulties on a statement of Rabbi Yosi, only seven or eight at most, and the rest were forgotten",
and in the Mishnah one does not find even once the words of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai on the statement of Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair.
In the Mishnah, Rabbi included only "the essence of the matters...
such as general principles and concise language,
so that even from one matter many reasons and mounds upon mounds of halachot and great aggadot, etc., are learned from it"149.
Accordingly, the Mishnah is entirely incomprehensible:
Every teacher who has several students knows simply that their opinions are not equal,
one student is not like another student.
If someone were to ask a teacher whether his students are different one from another –
the teacher would look at him like a fool,
because it is utterly simple that different students have different faculties and different modes of thinking, etc.
And in general –
every teacher understands regarding students,
that there are students who understand quickly what he teaches them,
and those who do not understand so quickly,
and those who forget quickly and others who do not forget so quickly. And consequently it turns out that this combines in general into four categories:
"quick to hear and quick to lose",
and it is simple that then "his gain is offset by his loss". "Hard to hear and hard to lose",
and it is simple that then "his loss is offset by his gain". "Quick to hear and hard to lose",
which is a good thing
("a good portion").
And "hard to hear and quick to lose",
which is not good
("a bad portion").
Now, since this is so simply understood –
why did Rebbi include this in a Mishnah
(as above, that he only included novellae that one cannot understand on one's own),
even not in a Baraita of the sixth chapter of Avot,
since not all Baraitot became Mishnayot,
simply,
but specifically included it in a Mishnah?!
b) The Gemara asks in many places "What is the difference between them?",
"What is the practical difference?" So too we must understand regarding this Mishnah:
Let us assume that a novelty will be found in this Mishnah –
but what is the practical difference of the entire matter that there are "four categories among students",
can one perhaps do something about it?
c) And in particular, since Pirkei Avot is "matters of piety"150,
i.e., that according to Halachah one is not obligated to do so much,
rather according to "matters of piety" the conduct must be beyond the letter of the law. Now, what is the "matters of piety" in this Mishnah? Even according to Halachah the difference between them in the Mishnah is not understood,
all the more so according to "matters of piety"!
d) The precise wording –
"a good portion"151,
"a bad portion". Here the term "a good quality",
"a bad quality",
or "a good nature",
"a bad nature" etc. would be more fitting.
And in particular, since at the beginning of the Mishnah it indeed says "four categories among students",
should it not have corresponded and said at the end of the Mishnah "a good quality",
"a bad quality"?!
i.e., in addition to the fact that since in general the language of the Mishnah is extremely precise,
we must understand the term "portion" –
all the more so here where there is a change of language:
at the beginning of the Mishnah it says "categories",
and at its end –
"portion"?
e) Since this is a part of Torah
(instruction)
there must be from it an instruction for each and every one.
At least an instruction for teachers and students.
And as will be explained below.
Since after the last day of Pesach we engage in the study of the Rambam.
Now we will also dwell on one detail in today's lesson in the book of the Rambam
(Laws of Mezuzah ("Laws of Tefillin, Mezuzah and Sefer Torah") chapters 5-7 –
as marked in the "study guide"):
At the end (of chapter 6)
of the Laws of Mezuzah the Rambam concludes:
"A person is obligated to be careful with Mezuzah because it is an obligation upon all at all times. And whenever he enters and exits he will encounter the unity of the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and will remember His love and awaken from his sleep and his errors in the vanities of time
[in the manner that the Rambam writes earlier in the Laws of Repentance152 regarding the shofar blast:
"Although the shofar blast on Rosh Hashanah is a decree of the Scriptural verse, there is a hint in it, as if to say: Awaken, sleepers, from your sleep etc. those who forget the truth in the vanities of time etc."),
and know that nothing endures forever and ever except knowledge of the Rock of the world, and immediately he returns to his senses and walks in upright paths. The early Sages said: Anyone who has tefillin on his head and on his arm and tzitzis on his garment and a mezuzah on his doorway is guaranteed not to sin, for he has many reminders,
and they are the angels who save him from sinning,
as it is said153 The angel of Hashem encamps around those who fear Him and delivers them,
Blessed is the Merciful One who helps us".
What connection the Rambam has with the Zohar in our parshah and in Parshat Kedoshim and the notes on this from the Tatte, where it discusses tefillin and tzitzis
(tallis) –
because the Rambam mentions in the halachah "Anyone who has tefillin on his head and on his arm and tzitzis on his garment etc.".
And in particular, since the source of a part of this halachah is only from the Zohar,
one finds it almost nowhere else
(most matters in the Rambam have their source in the Talmud,
and a part –
in Midrash,
and in rare places the source of the Rambam is from the Zohar154. And this is one of those places):
The conclusion of the halachah
("The early Sages said: Anyone who has tefillin on his head and on his arm and tzitzis on his garment and a mezuzah on his doorway is guaranteed not to sin etc.")
has its source<sup>155</sup> from Tractate Menachot<sup>156</sup>;
איז מקורו 155 פון מסכת מנחות 156;
But the beginning of the halachah,
"As long as he enters and goes out, he will encounter the unity of the Name, the name of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and he will remember His love and awaken from his sleep and his errors in the vanities of time, and he will know that nothing stands forever and for all eternities except the knowledge of the Rock of the world, and immediately he returns to his mind and walks in the paths of the upright" –
its source is from the Zohar, Ra'aya Mehemna, Parshat Va'etchanan157:
"The commandment to fix a mezuzah on the gate, etc.
[And after the Zohar says that this is connected with protection –
"so that every person will be guarded by the Holy One, blessed be He,
when he goes out and when he enters, and the secret is 'Hashem will guard your going out and your coming in from now and forever'158. Because the secret of the mezuzah stands constantly at the entrance, etc." –
he continues with another matter in the mezuzah:
"so that a person will never forget the remembrance of the Holy One, blessed be He,
like the manner of tzitzit, as it is said159 'And you shall see it and remember all the commandments of Hashem etc.',
when a person sees this remembrance, he reminds himself to perform the commandment of his Master and the secret of faith, the mezuzah, etc.".
In this Rambam, however, one must understand:
A) The Rambam himself says that through these three things of "tefillin on his head and on his arm, and tzitzit on his garment, and a mezuzah on his door," "he is assured that he will not sin, etc."
[And as explained in the Gemara160 that regarding these three things David said "Seven times a day I praise You" –
"Tefillin on the head and on the arm, that is two,
and four tzitzit and a mezuzah, that is seven"161].
Now, why did the Rambam place this specifically in the laws of mezuzah and not in the laws of tefillin and the laws of tzitzit;
היינט פארוואס האט דאס דער רמב"ם אריינגעשטעלט דוקא אין הלכות מזוזה און ניט אין הלכות תפילין והלכות ציצית;
why does it have more connection with
(one)
matter of mezuzah than with tefillin
(two,
on the head and on the arm)
and tzitzit
(four,
the four tzitzit)?
B) The Rambam's conclusion "Blessed is the Merciful One who aided us" is a phrase common in the Rambam at the end of his books –
but what connection does it have here,
where it is not the end of a book,
and not even the end of a section of halachot
(because afterwards comes chapter seven,
the beginning of the laws of a Torah scroll),
rather this comes in the middle of the laws of tefillin, mezuzah, and a Torah scroll?
And as will be explained below.
In connection with the study of the book of the Rambam –
I was informed of good and joyous news:
that at the conclusion of the Book of Knowledge of the Rambam
(according to the fixed lessons in the Rambam) –
they made the conclusion at the grave of the Rambam in Tiberias,
a celebration for the completion of the Torah162,
and this was also connected with
(printing there a book of Tanya of)
the Alter Rebbe.
The connection of this Rambam with the Alter Rebbe is known –
as one sees immediately at the beginning of Likkutei Torah
(which the Tzemach Tzedek,
the successor of the Alter Rebbe,
in Parshat Pekudei164
(even before the book of Vayikra)
the Alter Rebbe addresses a matter in the Moreh Nevuchim of the Rambam and explains it.
And likewise at the beginning of the book of Tanya165 he brings from the Rambam.
And likewise
(regarding the same matter)
also in Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah166,
and it is known
(as they tell among Chassidim)
167 that the Alter Rebbe had an intention to begin his book of Tanya with Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah.
And they also connected it with making a Chassidic farbrengen there,
which adds more to the joy,
and afterwards, before Shabbos, they brought here from the mashkeh of that farbrengen to the place of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation,
the successor of the Alter Rebbe.
And in order to connect and join that farbrengen with this farbrengen,
they will give mashkeh from this farbrengen mixed with the mashkeh from there.
And it is understood the greatness of the matter of studying the book of the Rambam at the grave of the Rambam,
where "here he is buried"
(in the well-known phrase),
and especially that in addition they also have the study in his book,
which is like the Holy One, blessed be He, says "I gave My soul in writing"168,
so too regarding righteous ones who author books,
that they gave themselves into their books,
and consequently, when one studies their books, one becomes united with them169.
And may it be His will that from this conclusion of the Book of Knowledge in the Rambam,
which is connected with
(the beginning of the Book of Knowledge)
"the foundation of foundations and the pillar of wisdoms, to know that there is a First Existence, etc.",
one comes to the fulfillment of the promise at the end of the book of the Rambam –
"for170 the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea",
What is accomplished through the totality of our deeds and service in this time,
which includes the study of the Rambam's book within Torah study in general,
and study in a manner of "to know" etc.,
and "to know" not only in a manner of "entering" the orchard,
but also "to stroll in the orchard"171,
because even though for this one must be filled with the entire Talmud and halachic works,
and in the language of the Rambam172 –
"his belly is filled with bread and meat,
and bread and meat is to know the forbidden and the permitted etc." –
however today,
after that in all the generations before us there was the "his belly is filled with bread and meat etc.",
one stands as a "dwarf on the shoulders of a giant"173,
therefore the "to stroll in the orchard" can already be.
And this is done all out of joy and goodness of heart –
just as the conclusion of the Book of Knowledge
(joy for the completion of the Torah)
they seized the opportunity to connect with a Chassidic farbrengen,
out of joy
As is known the great emphasis and length of the Rambam specifically that every Jew must fulfill the mitzvos with great joy –
which one does not find such emphasis and length regarding the obligation of joy in the other halachic authorities
[the actual obligation of joy is stated in the halachic authorities,
but not such emphasis and length that each and every one is obligated in this)
As the Rambam writes at the conclusion of the Laws of Lulav –
which is connected with the four species,
which correspond to all four types of Jews174
[like the "four characteristics among students" in Pirkei Avos],
which further emphasizes the relevance of the joy explained in the Laws of Lulav to each and every Jew:
After the Rambam speaks about the distinctions that were to be among the Jews at the Celebration of the Water Drawing –
that the joy was through "the great ones175 of the sages of Israel etc., they were the ones who danced etc.,
but all the people, the men and the women, all came to see and to hear" –
he continues176:
"The joy that a person rejoices in the performance of a mitzvah and in the love of God who commanded them is a great service." And he is not satisfied with this, but he adds the negation in this:
"And whoever prevents himself from this joy is worthy of being punished,
as it is said177 because you did not serve Hashem your God with joy and with goodness of heart",
and afterwards he further elaborates on this,
and negates that "whoever is arrogant and honors himself and considers himself honored in these places is a sinner and a fool,
and about this King Solomon warned saying178 do not glorify yourself before a king".
And on the other hand –
he continues –
"And whoever humbles himself and makes his body light in these places is the great and honored one who serves out of love,
and likewise King David said179 and I will be even more lowly than this and I will be humble in my eyes." And the Rambam concludes:
"And there is no greatness and honor except to rejoice before Hashem, as it is said180 and King David was leaping and dancing before Hashem etc."
From this one sees the great necessity that all matters of man's service should be out of joy,
including the study of the Rambam's book etc.
And through the totality of our deeds and service and out of joy and goodness of heart –
one further hastens the time when there will be "for the earth will be filled with knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea",
with the coming of David, King Moshiach,
And very soon one will go to the Holy Land,
and there specifically to Jerusalem, the holy city,
"the city of the great King"123 –
David, King Moshiach,
and there specifically to the Temple Mount.
Just as there is here the one who brought here the drink from the farbrengen that was made in connection with the completion of the Book of Knowledge at the grave of the Rambam in Tiberias –
it is in the language of our Sages181 "the reader of the letter, he should be the messenger" –
he will be given the drink as a participation from the farbrengen mixed with the drink from that farbrengen –
Because the great joy connected with the completion of the Book of Knowledge must begin from him,
and from him it will be drawn to all the others,
through his distributing from the drink to all the others –
beginning now on the Sabbath day to distribute it to several people at least
(due to the burden on the community),
and afterwards –
to continue the distribution,
And through this to increase the joy of every Jew and of all Jews in connection with the completion of the Book of Knowledge,
and in general with the study of the Rambam's book,
and with the study of the Torah in general.
May it be His will that we draw in more Jews to the study of the Rambam according to the established daily study portions,
and how good it would be if it would be completed with alacrity,
in one year,
close to the birthday of the Rambam in the coming year –
similar to what the Rambam writes regarding the completion of the Written Torah182 that "the custom throughout all Israel is to complete the Torah in one year",
so too should it be regarding "Mishneh Torah",
that how good it would be if it would be completed in one year.
And in the meantime, Mashiach our righteousness will surely come,
and Moshe and Aharon with them183,
and the Rambam with them,
then one will be able to go to the Rambam himself and ask him questions and doubts that one has in his book,
and he will have to answer,
because he himself writes that one need only study the Written Torah
(the Five Books of Moses)
and his book,
through this one has "the entire Oral Torah",
consequently one must understand his entire book,
and especially since he himself emphasizes
(in Hilchos Lulav)
the greatness of the matter of joy
(as above),
and there is no joy like the resolution of doubts184.
And as mentioned,
this comes about through our deeds and our service now,
including the study of the book of the Rambam.
And one should connect the book of the Rambam also with our portion:
It is known the saying about the Rambam from the great ones of Israel –
that "from Moshe to Moshe none arose like Moshe"185.
And it can be explained that just as it states at the beginning of our portion "And Hashem spoke to Moshe etc. 'Take a census of the entire assembly of the children of Israel etc. by their skulls'",
and the verse repeats several times in the portion the term "by their skulls" –
so too regarding the Rambam
(from Moshe to Moshe none arose like Moshe),
the book of the Rambam is in the manner and likeness of the aspect of "skull":
The human skull encompasses and protects the brain and intellect within the head. This indicates that spiritually its meaning is that it is above the intellect etc.186.
And corresponding to this is the book of the Rambam:
he wrote in his book only definitive laws,
without any reasons
(in the intellect).
And this is analogous to study in a manner of seeing,
which is above understanding and comprehension.
[His Holy Presence, the Rebbe, shlita, gave a bottle of mashkeh to the esteemed R. L.B. shiy'a].
Afterwards he said:
From one subject to another within the same topic:
Since in this week there takes place a gathering
(a "dinner" –
as it is called here)
in connection with the Jews in Russia,
that Jews who have already left from there help them to get out with assistance and support etc. –
let it be announced again about this,
and as participation in this, they will be given mashkeh from the gathering.
Similarly, there takes place next week,
in the days of restriction,
a gathering in connection with "Ohalei Torah" –
let it also be announced again about this,
and they will also be given mashkeh.
After the announcement regarding the above –
His Holy Presence, the Rebbe, shlita, gave a bottle of mashkeh to the esteemed R. Sh.N.Z. HaLevi S. shiy'a
(for the gathering of the institution "Pri" for the benefit of the Jews of Russia).
To the esteemed R. M.T. shiy'a
(for the gathering of the institution "Ohalei Torah").
Afterwards, His Holy Presence, the Rebbe, shlita, began to sing "Veharikosi Lachem Bracha".
[Afterwards, he instructed the announcer of the above announcements –
the esteemed R. M.P. HaKohen K. shiy'a to say "L'chayim"].
The explanation why Rashi does not explain the different orders in which the tribes are listed in our portion –
because the five-year-old student of Scripture understands it on his own from studying the verses,
and also –
waiting until the conclusion of the subject,
as discussed many times187 that as long as one is still in the middle of a subject,
the five-year-old student of Scripture waits until the conclusion of the subject in case a question he might have will be answered then.
And the explanation of this:
Regarding the first order of the princes:
After the verse lists the princes,
the verse concludes188:
"These are the ones summoned of the assembly, the princes of the tribes of their fathers." And Rashi explains:
"These are the ones summoned of the assembly –
those who are called for every matter of importance of the assembly."
Consequently, the five-year-old student of Scripture should no longer need an explanation why the princes are in this order –
because this is the order of their importance
[and not that one counts according to the order of their birth189,
because here there is no practical difference when the tribes were born,
and whether one is from one mother or from another,
here only their importance is relevant].
Then the Torah counts how the tribes were counted,
and counts them in a different order. This is not a difficulty for a five-year-old studying Scripture –
because:
He understands simply that when one counts many people,
the order in this matter is,
that first the counter counts those who are closest to him,
and then those who are a bit further,
and then those who are even further,
and so forth –
all according to the order of the tribes' proximity to him. Consequently, there is no question why he counted them in this order –
because in this order they stood before him:
the closest were the children of Reuben,
then the children of Simeon,
then the children of Judah,
then the children of Gad,
and so forth.
א.א.וו.
The question, however, is –
why were they indeed standing in this order?
The five-year-old studying Scripture waits until the conclusion of the matter,
and there it is answered:
At the conclusion of the matter, where it speaks about the count of the tribe of Levi,
regarding what is written 190 "the families of the children of Kohath shall encamp on the south side,"
Rashi explains:
"And next to them is the banner of Reuben who encamp on the south side; woe to the wicked, woe to his neighbor,
therefore Dathan and Abiram and the two hundred and fifty men with Korah and his assembly, who were drawn after them in their dispute, were stricken from them."
And correspondingly, on the good side, Rashi explains on the verse 191 "and those who encamp on the east side... Moses and Aaron and his sons":
"And next to them is the banner of the camp of Judah and those who encamp with him, Issachar and Zebulun;
good for the righteous, good for his neighbor,
because they were neighbors of Moses, who was engaged in Torah, they became great in Torah, as it is said 192 'Judah is my lawgiver,'
and from the children of Issachar, those who had understanding of the times... two hundred heads of Sanhedrin,193
and from Zebulun, those who wield the scribe's staff."194
From this the five-year-old understands that the proximity and closeness in place of the tribes to each other is connected with the fact that their characteristics were close to each other. And just as it is stated regarding the two banners
(the banner of Reuben and the banner of Judah),
it is understood that it was also so regarding the other two banners,
that their proximity was connected with their close characteristics.
And from this it is also understood,
that within each banner itself,
the closest neighbors were also closer in characteristics,
and those who were a bit further –
a bit further in their characteristics. For example:
In the banner of Judah were Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun,
whose proximity was connected with the fact that they were all righteous,
and within this itself –
the camp of Issachar was closer to the camp of Judah,
because they were closer in their righteousness,
and Zebulun came a bit further because their righteousness was a bit less,
and so forth regarding the rest of the tribes.
Based on this, the five-year-old already understands why the tribes stood in this order before Moses our teacher
(when he counted them),
and therefore he indeed counted them in this order –
because in this order they were arranged in their banners,
due to their proximity and closeness in their characteristics:
first the banner of Reuben,
Simeon and Gad. Then the banner of Judah,
Issachar and Zebulun. Then the banner of Ephraim,
Manasseh and Benjamin. Then the banner of Dan,
Asher and Naphtali.
Based on this, another matter is answered:
Why does the lesson of "woe to the wicked, woe to his neighbor," etc., come specifically in our portion –
seemingly it would be fitting to bring it several times before in the Chumash. For example –
on the verse 195 "and the men of Sodom were evil," Rashi says:
"And nevertheless Lot did not refrain from dwelling with them."
And correspondingly, on the verse 196 "when he took Rivkah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean, from Padan Aram," Rashi explains:
"To tell of her praise, that she was the daughter of a wicked man and the sister of a wicked man, and her place was of wicked men,
and she did not learn from their deeds" –
there it would have been appropriate to say "woe to the wicked, woe to his neighbor."
The commentators 197 say that Rashi's proof here is from the fact that it is stated in the verse
(regarding the children of Kohath)
"they shall encamp on the side of the Tabernacle, southward" –
and not "on the side of the Tabernacle they shall encamp southward"
(as it is stated correspondingly earlier),
from this Rashi deduces that "the verse 198 does not come to state the command 'they shall encamp southward,'
but rather an explanation,
that they were already southward,
and it comes to say that since they were southward, they were drawn after them in the dispute, etc."
But this itself needs to be understood:
Why is it necessary to change the verse here in order to teach that "woe to the wicked, woe to his neighbor"?
Seemingly, Rashi could have written it earlier
(in the Chumash of Genesis)
as above.
Based on the above, this is understood:
Specifically in our parshah, the matter of "Woe to the wicked..." and "Good for the righteous..." comes not merely as an independent lesson –
Rather, this is relevant to the content of the matter discussed there,
that with this it is explained why the verse lists the tribes in this order,
because this was the order of their standing according to their proximity to each other, which is connected to their characteristics,
as above.
Based on this, the aforementioned precise points are understood,
and also several other precise points and matters.
The explanation of the mishnah in Pirkei Avot:
According to law, there is an obligation of "And you shall teach them to your children"199,
and "And you shall teach them to your children, these are the students",
as ruled in the laws of Torah study200:
"It is a commandment of the Torah upon every wise man from Israel to teach all the students, even if they are not his offspring,
as it is said, 'And you shall teach them to your children...' and the Sages received200 that 'your children' are your students, etc."
In this obligation is included,
that one should teach the student the Written Torah and the Oral Torah,
and how to fulfill the commandments, and the like.
However, there is no obligation according to law that a teacher must improve the character traits of his student. He has no obligation that he must look into the characteristics and talents of the student and endeavor to improve them, and the like.
Regarding this comes the mishnah in Pirkei Avot –
"Matters of piety" –
and it adds,
that from the aspect of the measure of piety
(beyond the letter of the law)
a true teacher must also do in this:
The mishnah tells a teacher that "There are four types of students,
quick to hear, etc.",
not merely as information that this is the reality,
but in a practical sense –
so that he should know that it is not enough that he only teach his student,
and afterwards he is not concerned with what happens with the student, but rather he must look into and see the characteristics and talents of each one of his students,
and act with each student according to his situation:
"Quick to hear and quick to lose, his gain goes out in his loss":
When he sees that his student hears and immediately grasps what he teaches him –
he can be satisfied with himself and say "Rejoice, my innards": Aha! –
I have a student who immediately understands what is being said,
and consequently
(he thinks to himself)
I have a great reward,
and afterwards lie down to "sleep" and no longer be interested in what happens with the student. The mishnah says –
"And quick to lose,
his gain goes out in his loss":
You must look into what happens afterwards with the student,
what happens with him when he lies down to sleep –
whether he remembers what he learned or not. And if he is "quick to lose" –
then "his gain goes out in his loss":
You have gained nothing,
because he forgot what you taught him. Therefore you must further occupy yourself with him and endeavor to correct the trait of "quick to lose".
"Hard to hear and hard to lose, his loss goes out in his gain":
When he teaches a student who is "hard to hear",
even after he explains with good reasoning
(in the manner of "set it before them"201,
and "put it in their mouths"201)
nevertheless he must toil with him and review several times –
he can do this without vitality,
and think to himself that it is better to use the time to teach one who is "quick to hear", etc.
The mishnah further tells him –
"And hard to lose,
his loss goes out in his gain":
You must further look into what happens with this student after you teach him,
and it could very well be that he is "hard to lose",
that he remembers everything you taught him,
and consequently then "his loss goes out in his gain",
that you receive reward for this
(the opposite of when you teach one who is "quick to hear and quick to lose").
"Quick to hear and hard to lose":
When he teaches a student who immediately grasps what he says and does not forget it –
he might think that he should be "patted on the shoulder",
that he has such a student.
The mishnah tells him –
"This is a good portion":
This is not your
(the teacher's)
accomplishment –
This is the "good portion" of the student:
He has these talents by nature,
and you have not accomplished anything in this. Consequently, the teacher must know that it is not enough that he only teach the student,
but rather he must do with him and improve his virtues, and the like.
"Hard to hear and quick to forget":
When one teaches such a student, he may think that the student is guilty and it is lost,
one can no longer do anything with him. The Mishnah says:
"This is an evil portion" –
the student is not guilty in this,
because "this is an evil portion" that the Omnipresent gave him202. And certainly one can change it
(as follows).
And regarding this is also the instruction of the Mishnah to students:
If he has talents and is "quick to hear",
he must not be a haughty person,
because it can be that "quick to forget,
and his reward comes out in his loss". And even "quick to hear and hard to forget" –
he must still not be a haughty person,
because "this is a good portion" that the Omnipresent gave you;
ווייל "זה חלק טוב" וואס דער אויבערשטער האט דיר געגעבן;
and you did not labor for it. And "man is born for toil"203 –
therefore you must labor and add more than the "good portion" that the Omnipresent gave you.
And regarding this, conversely:
If with him it is "hard to hear",
he may become downcast within himself and fall into despair, Heaven forbid.
One tells him that it can be that "hard to forget,
and his loss comes out in his reward".
And furthermore:
Even if he is "hard to hear and quick to forget",
he should also not fall into despair,
because "this is an evil portion",
he is not guilty in this,
rather this is the portion that was given to him from Above,
but certainly he can overcome it and change it.
As the Rambam rules204 that "every person is given free will; if he wishes to incline himself to a good path and be righteous, the choice is in his hand, etc.",
"Let not this thing pass through your mind that the fools of the nations say, etc., that the Holy One, blessed be He, decrees upon a person from the beginning of his creation to be righteous or wicked, etc.",
and he elaborates on this,
and explains that the matter of free will "is a great principle and it is the pillar of the Torah and the commandment, etc.",
and the foundation of all reward and punishment, etc.
The explanation in the Rambam, Laws of Mezuzah will be understood based on what is explained in the Zohar, Parshat Va'etchanan
(which is the source of the Rambam,
as above):
In the Zohar he says there,
that "it is a commandment to affix a mezuzah on the gates,
so that all people be guarded from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He,
when they go out and when they come in, and the secret is 'Hashem will guard your going out and your coming in from now and forever'. Because the secret of the mezuzah stands constantly at the entrance,
and this is the supernal entrance and this is the level called Guardian, to be found in protection. And furthermore, that a person should never forget the remembrance of the Holy One, blessed be He,
like the manner of tzitzit, as it is said 'And you shall see it and remember all the commandments of Hashem, etc.',
when a person sees this remembrance, he remembers within himself to perform the commandment of his Master, and the secret of faith is the mezuzah, etc."
And as he continues further in the Zohar204 how a mezuzah effects the matter of protection:
"At the time that harmful species approach the entrance of a person, they raise their heads and look at the holy Name that appears outside, which is Sha-dai, that is adorned with its crowns; this Name rules over all of them, and they are afraid and flee, and do not approach the entrance of the person."
That is to say, the unique aspect of mezuzah is –
that in it one sees Divinity in a revealed way down here
(at the entrance of the house of a Jew).
And in the language of the Rambam –
that this is "the unification of the Name,
the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He". And therefore,
through a mezuzah "a person will never forget the remembrance of the Holy One, blessed be He",
and "when a person sees this remembrance, he remembers within himself to perform the commandment of his Master". In the language of the Rambam –
that through a mezuzah
(which is "the unification of the Name")
"he will remember His love and awaken from his sleep and his errors in the vanities of time,
and know that there is nothing that endures forever and ever except the knowledge of the Rock of the world, and immediately he returns to his knowledge and walks in the paths of uprightness",
since the mezuzah is connected with the Omnipresent in a revealed way.
And since the body of the mezuzah is connected with "the unification of the Name" in a revealed way,
therefore a mezuzah also brings about the matter of protection over the person and all matters of the house
("Hashem will guard your going out and your coming in from now and forever",
also when the person is not at home) –
as per the acronym of "Sha-dai" that stands on the mezuzah –
"Guardian of the doors of Israel"205 or "Guardian of the dwellings of Israel"206,
because,
as explained in the aforementioned Zohar,
that when an undesirable angel and the like sees the mezuzah on the door of the house,
on which one sees the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He,
"the unification of the Name",
in a revealed way –
which is "the truth of His existence" from Whom all existences are found,
and if He wishes He can annihilate them from existence –
he is afraid to approach.
We see the special aspect of mezuzah
(that the body of the mezuzah is connected with the "Oneness of Hashem" in a revealed way,
and therefore it provides protection) –
also in halachah:
In general, there is a prohibition of "You shall not test Hashem your G-d"207,
except for the mitzvah of tzedakah, about which it says208 "Test Me now with this",
as explained in the poskim209,
and as also explained in the poskim, there are several limitations regarding this.
In this, however, there is one exception –
the mitzvah of mezuzah
(as discussed at length previously210)
that the aspect of protection through mezuzah is a part of "the body of the mitzvah itself"211,
and furthermore –
this is a fundamental point in the mitzvah of mezuzah –
"it is made for protection"212.
And since this is the only mitzvah where protection is a result and part of the mitzvah itself,
there is no deficiency in the completeness of fulfillment when it is done for the sake of protection,
because this is indeed among the matters of the mitzvah.
And the reason for this
(why mezuzah is different from other mitzvos) –
is as above:
The reason why a mezuzah brings protection,
is not because of the mezuzah itself,
that the mezuzah is like an "amulet"
(and the like) heaven forbid
[as the Rambam rejects in the halachos preceding this213],
but because the mitzvah of mezuzah is a mitzvah of Hashem214,
and the mitzvah
(the mitzvah of mezuzah)
is the "Oneness of Hashem" in a revealed way,
and therefore it also brings the protection of the Holy One, blessed be He,
as above, that when the unwanted angel sees the mezuzah, he sees the "Oneness of Hashem",
consequently he has fear from it.
That is, the main point here is the One Above,
and He protects the house,
and how the "Oneness of Hashem" is expressed –
is through the mezuzah,
and therefore when one sees the mezuzah –
through this one sees the "Oneness of Hashem" in a revealed way –
it protects the house.
And based on this, one can explain the reason why the Rambam specifically in the halachos of mezuzah
(not in the halachos of tefillin or the halachos of tzitzis)
brings the matter of "Whoever has tefillin on his head and arm, and tzitzis on his garment, and a mezuzah at his entrance, is guaranteed not to sin, etc.":
Because specifically in the mitzvah of mezuzah
(not so the mitzvah of tefillin and the mitzvah of tzitzis)
the aspect of the "Oneness of Hashem" in a revealed way is emphasized,
as he says in the preceding halachah,
and therefore through mezuzah "he will remember his love, etc." And therefore specifically in the mitzvah of mezuzah there is the aspect of protection
(as a part of the body of the mitzvah),
the protection of the Holy One, blessed be He.
And therefore also the aspect of protection that "he is guaranteed not to sin" comes specifically through the mitzvah of mezuzah,
more than through the mitzvah of tefillin and tzitzis. As the matter is also simply:
Through a mezuzah, the One Above protects all of a person's possessions that are in the house,
including the tefillin and tzitzis and sefer Torah and the like that are there.
Therefore the Rambam writes it specifically in the halachos of mezuzah.
And based on the above, one can also explain why the Rambam adds at the end of the halachah –
"Blessed is the Merciful One who assisted us" after he writes that "Whoever has, etc., a mezuzah at his entrance is guaranteed not to sin, etc.":
With this, the Rambam further emphasizes the aforementioned aspect in mezuzah –
the "Oneness of Hashem" in a revealed way
(and therefore it brings "he will remember his love, etc." and "he is guaranteed not to sin") –
that the only thing that effects the protection through the Holy One, blessed be He
("he is guaranteed not to sin")
is the One Above –
"Blessed is the Merciful One who assisted us".
And that which it says "the Merciful One" in the Aramaic language –
one can say the hint in this:
The aspect of protection through mezuzah
(due to the "Oneness of Hashem")
descends even to the very lowest level in the world. As related in the Yerushalmi215,
that "Artban, a non-Jew216, sent to Rabbeinu HaKadosh a precious pearl of great value.
He said to him: Send me something good of equal value.
He sent him a mezuzah.
He said to him: I sent you something that has no price,
and you sent me something worth a single prutah
(a small coin)
." Rabbeinu HaKadosh answered him:
"You sent me something that I must guard,
and I sent you something that you will sleep and it will guard you",
and as it actually happened, the mezuzah protected the possessions of Artban!217
From this we see that the aspect of protection through the mezuzah
(the "Oneness of Hashem")
descends also to a non-Jew,
who does not understand the Holy Tongue,
but only the Aramaic language,
i.e., to the very lowest level,
and even he perceives the aspect of the "Oneness of Hashem" in a revealed way
(through the mezuzah).
And this is hinted in that the language here is "Berich Rachmana d'sayei'an",
in Aramaic –
that even one who understands only this language hears that "Berich Rachmana d'sayei'an",
that the Most High is the One Who helps and protects etc.
The explanation in this Zohar –
"After he arose, he entered the synagogue, adorned with Totepei
(Tefillin)
covered with the covering of Tzitzit
(Tallit)" –
in the service of man
[which is connected with what was discussed above in the Rambam –
"Whoever has Tefillin on his head and on his arm, and Tzitzit on his garment, and a Mezuzah at his entrance etc."]:
The general intent of making for Him, blessed be He, a dwelling place in the lower realms –
is connected
(in addition to the matter of the Mezuzah,
"the unification of the Name")
with two things:
the matter of Makif and the matter of Penimi,
as explained in many places.
Which in the mitzvot are expressed the two things
(of Makif and Penimi)
in the two mitzvot of Tallit and Tefillin:
Tallit is the aspect of Makif,
the cloak of the King218,
acceptance of the yoke
(as explained in Tanya219),
and simply –
it encompasses the person. And Tefillin is the aspect of Penimiyut220. And in the language of the verse221:
"Bread to eat
(Penimiyut)
and a garment to wear
(Makif)
"222.
" 222.
And in this there are two orders:
The order of actual service is from the light to the heavy,
one begins with Makif,
acceptance of the yoke,
a general matter,
and afterwards one enters into Penimiyut.
And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said223: "Why was the portion of Shema preceded to Vehayah Im Shamoa? So that one should first accept upon himself the yoke of the kingdom of heaven and afterwards accept upon himself the yoke of the mitzvot."
And thus the order is expressed in donning the Tallit and laying the Tefillin –
that one first puts on the Tallit
(Makif),
and afterwards the Tefillin
(Penimi)224,
because "one ascends in holiness and does not descend"225,
i.e., from the light to the heavy.
But when it speaks about making for Him, blessed be He, a dwelling place in the lower realms in actuality –
then first and foremost the emphasis must be on Penimiyut and the innermost Penimiyut,
that Divinity should permeate the lower realms in Penimiyut and the innermost Penimiyut,
and afterwards an aspect of a higher Makif etc. is drawn down.
And about this he speaks in the Zohar
(the emphasis on actualizing the dwelling place in the lower realms) –
"He entered the synagogue, adorned with Totepei, covered with the covering of Tzitzit" –
that first comes the matter of laying Tefillin
(after donning the Tallit beforehand),
the matter of Penimiyut,
and afterwards one covers the Tefillin with the Tallit –
the drawing down of Makif –
because regarding the dwelling place in the lower realms in actuality, the emphasis is primarily on the matter of Penimiyut.
That is, that the emphasis in this Zohar is specifically the superiority of Penimiyut,
and therefore he begins with the order of Tefillin,
and afterwards the drawing down of a higher Makif through his covering the Tefillin with the Tallit.
That the emphasis is specifically on Penimiyut is also seen in the future to come –
as explained in Pri Etz Chaim226,
that all matters and revelations in this time are only from the externality of Atika Kadisha,
but in the future to come there will be the revelation of the Penimiyut of Atika Kadisha,
because this is the perfection of all matters.
Standing in the days before Shavuot,
the time of the giving of our Torah,
which the matter of the giving of the Torah was opened through the introduction that "our children are our guarantors"227,
both boys and girls. And on the contrary –
as an introduction to the giving of the Torah, it was first228: "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob"229 –
"these are the women"230 and afterwards "and tell the children of Israel"229 –
"these are the men"231.
It is the place to mention,
as mentioned in the previous years232,
that also in this year,
one should bring all Jewish children to the synagogue on Shavuot to hear the "Ten Commandments" during the Torah reading. And do this in this year with greater vigor and strength,
and publicize this etc.
Also:
Since as a preparation for the giving of the Torah was "our children are our guarantors" –
one should arouse,
as in recent years,
that before Shavuot a gathering of "Tzivot Hashem" should be held,
and speak with them about the giving of the Torah and their role in this as guarantors etc.,
"as one man with one heart".
And this should be a fitting preparation for receiving the Torah with joy and with Penimiyut233,
"as one man with one heart".
And standing at the time of the ratzon d'ratzin of Shabbat Parshat Bamidbar,
when one will soon read Parshat Nasso –
one enters from "Raise the head of the children of Israel" which is in Parshat Bamidbar,
into "Raise the head of the children of Israel" in Parshat Nasso,
What this has as an advantage relative to Parshat Bamidbar:
In Parshat Bamidbar
(where the entire portion is called "Bamidbar")
the matter of "Raise the head" is emphasized as being "in the desert";
איז בהדגשה ווי דער ענין פון "שאו את ראש" איז "במדבר";
however, in Parshat Nasso
("Raise the head")
the name of the entire portion is "Nasso",
therefore the matter of "raising" stands more emphatically and openly,
It also includes the matter of the offerings of the princes which is discussed in the portion,
where each prince
(from the term "Nasso")
through his offering on his day lifts up
("Nasso")
his tribe,
each tribe ascends in its own path,
and together with this the matter of the unity of all Jews and tribes is also emphasized,
as it says in the Midrash 234
(as discussed at length many times)
"Scripture considers them as if all of them offered on the first day and as if all of them offered on the last day" 235,
and through the unity on the first day and on the last day –
there was unity on all the intervening days 236.
And since in Parshat Nasso there is the unity of all Jews
(and together with this each one ascends in his own path) –
this then gives strength to Aharon the High Priest that afterwards there should be "When you raise the lamps, toward the face of the menorah shall the seven lamps give light" 237,
that all seven lamps which correspond to the seven types of Jews 238,
stand as "one piece" 239 with the menorah,
and they all shine,
even to the extent of "the flame rising by itself" 240,
until they ascend on high, high up into the innermost aspect of the Ancient Holy One.
His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, commanded the holy prince, may he live, to sing "Yehi ratzon... that the Holy Temple be built speedily in our days, and give us our portion in Your Torah."
Afterwards, he himself began to sing "Nyet nyet nikavo".
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to recite the after-blessing,
will certainly recite the after-blessing.
