English translation 1
On Shabbat in general,
On Shabbat in general,
including this Shabbat,
the "Vayechulu hashamayim veha'aretz vechol tzeva'am" is opened and from the six weekdays,
With the two explanations of "Vayechulu"
(as the Tzemach Tzedek explains in Ohr HaTorah2):
from the term kelayah (consumption)
(the first explanation),
and from the term ta'anug (delight)
(the second explanation).
That is:
on Shabbat the elevation and consumption of the six weekdays occurs,
and through this, afterward, the matter of drawing down delight into the six weekdays. And in general, these two matters
(consumption and delight) –
are an elevation from below to above
(consumption of the six weekdays)
and a drawing down from above to below
(drawing down delight into the six weekdays).
And regarding this Shabbat –
then the "Vayechulu"
(the elevation and consumption,
and delight)
is of the past week,
including the fifteenth of Shevat.
And according to what was discussed and explained3 regarding the matter that Shabbat blesses all the days4 of the coming week,
that this means that Shabbat blesses not only the six weekdays
(that follow it),
but also the coming Shabbat –
so too regarding the "Vayechulu"
(consumption and delight)
on Shabbat,
that this is not only in the six weekdays that precede it,
but also in the past Shabbat.
In our case –
the tenth of Shevat.
And the explanation of the matter:
The two matters on Shabbat –
"Vayechulu"
(consumption and delight)
of the preceding days and that Shabbat blesses all the following days –
are two levels in Shabbat and two opposite extremes:
Shabbat blesses all the days is that Shabbat influences blessing and drawing down into the six weekdays and into the following Shabbat,
and "Vayechulu" on Shabbat is that it "receives" from the six weekdays and the preceding Shabbat
(and Shabbat effects in them an elevation and consumption and drawing down of delight),
as our Sages said5 "One who toils on Shabbat eve will eat on Shabbat",
meaning that the foods and matters of Shabbat come
(they receive)
from the "toil on Shabbat eve",
and Shabbat effects in this "toil" the "will eat" –
the matter of
(consumption and)
delight
(which comes through eating).
But on the other hand:
Both the matter of Shabbat blesses all the days and the "Vayechulu" on Shabbat effect in the days
(including the Shabbat)
that follow or precede an elevation incomparably greater than what the days have in themselves:
Regarding Shabbat blesses all the days:
It is explained in many places6 the matter of blessing,
that the one who blesses stands higher than the thing being blessed, therefore he can bless it. So too regarding Shabbat:
Shabbat stands higher than the coming days that follow it,
therefore Shabbat can bless them and through this effect in them an addition and elevation which they do not have in themselves.
And the blessing of Shabbat is not only for the six weekdays,
but also for the coming Shabbat,
as elaborated above.
So too the "Vayechulu" on Shabbat elevates not only the six preceding days,
but also the preceding Shabbat –
the tenth of Shevat.
So too the "Vayechulu"
(elevation and consumption,
and drawing down of delight)
on Shabbat effects an elevation and drawing down that is higher
(of delight)
in the preceding days incomparably greater than what the days have in themselves:
On Shabbat we say that "all your work is done"7. It is a day of rest.
That is, that then all the matters that were prepared in the days before Shabbat – "toil on Shabbat eve" –
are in a level and state of rest
(without any exertion).
And moreover –
in a manner of delight,
as the law is8 that on Shabbat it is a mitzvah to delight in eating and drinking,
for delight is the highest level,
in the statement9 "There is nothing above delight".
That is, that on Shabbat one has not only good and pleasure,
but delight,
which nothing is above it.
And not only delight as it is on Shabbat in its own right,
"it is inherently holy"10,
but additionally, a Jew through his service adds more delight to the delight of Shabbat in its own right,
until he "delights in Shabbat"11.
Now, one has both advantages:
The advantage of delight that is in Shabbat from its own side,
"sanctified and established,"
which is also a very lofty level. As this is simply according to the revealed aspect,
that on Shabbat we do not say "Who sanctifies Israel and Shabbat,"
as on Yom Tov "Who sanctifies Israel and the seasons"12,
because the sanctity of Shabbat is "sanctified and established,"
it is drawn from above. So much so that Shabbat is the level of "a holy matter in itself"13.
Accordingly, it is also understood regarding the matter of delight on Shabbat,
that in delight itself,
in which there are levels –
the delight on Shabbat is analogous to delight that is "a matter in itself,"
the very highest level in this. And in addition to this, one also has the addition of delight through the service of man,
"he who delights the Shabbat."
It follows that even though
("Whoever toiled on the eve of Shabbat will eat on Shabbat"),
Shabbat receives from the preceding days –
nevertheless, Shabbat is completely separate from the work and labor of the preceding days.
From this it is also understood regarding "And the heavens and the earth and all their host were completed" from the preceding days –
that this is an ascent to a very lofty level –
delight,
and in this itself, the highest level,
which is incomparably higher than the level of the days preceding Shabbat in their own right,
which are days of labor.
For further clarification:
"All your work is done" on Shabbat means that eating, drinking, and the other matters on Shabbat are completely unconnected with exertion and labor.
For prima facie, there is room to say that since Shabbat comes in sequence to the preceding days of labor,
the rest and "all your work is done" on Shabbat is not in a manner that he is completely above the matter of labor,
but rather, even on Shabbat when he eats and drinks, etc., he feels fatigue from his toil during all the preceding days,
only that since it is Shabbat,
he is at rest from this labor,
but even in this rest he still feels weariness. And particularly at the Shabbat night meal, which comes after he toiled on the eve of Shabbat,
and to such an extent that according to Torah a Jew runs in the public domain on the eve of Shabbat14,
he is certainly weary from this running.
But in truth, this is not so:
"All your work is done" simply means
(not only that a Jew on Shabbat has actual rest from labor, but)
that all the labors of a Jew are completed,
and he has not even any impression of exertion, toil, and weariness. Consequently, when he eats and drinks on Shabbat, this is true delight,
because "all your work is done,"
he has no labors or exertions,
everything is completed for him. And therefore, eating and drinking on Shabbat is delight in its perfection.
Also on weekdays, eating is a matter of delight,
but then it is connected with "By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread"15. It is true that one makes a blessing over this bread
(and all foods),
so that "You shall eat and be satisfied and bless"16,
eating with delight
(to the point of satiety),
but it is nevertheless an eating connected with "the sweat of your brow"
(over which "the sweat of your brow" one does not make a blessing);
(וואס אויף "זיעת אפיך" מאכט מען ניט קיין ברכה);
not so the eating of Shabbat, which is not from "the sweat of your brow,"
but rather from delight in perfection,
because "all your work is done." Consequently, the blessing over this is a complete blessing.
And in the language of Chassidus
(in the Maamarei Rosh HaShanah17):
There are two levels in rest –
rest from labor,
in which there is also delight –
he sees that he has completed his work,
and from this he has pleasure and delight. But in this rest and delight, the toil and exertion of the labor are still felt;
האט ער דערפון הנאה ותענוג. אבער אין די מנוחה ותענוג איז נאך מורגש יגיעה וטירחת המלאכה;
and a higher level –
intrinsic rest,
in which no weariness from the toil and exertion is felt. And the rest of Shabbat is intrinsic rest. When he eats the Shabbat meal, this is entirely permeated with delight
(without any impression of toil and exertion).
And this concerns all the Shabbat meals,
also the Shabbat night meal. Even though the three meals are distinct levels in rest and delight,
as explained in many places18,
nevertheless, in general they are the same thing –
a Shabbat meal,
when "all your work is done,"
and the concept of "all your work is done" on Shabbat applies
(not only on the day of Shabbat, but)
also on Shabbat night. Consequently, they are
(all three meals)
from intrinsic rest,
so that he has no feeling of toil.
In simple terms:
Even the Shabbat evening meal comes after the evening prayer of Shabbat
(just as all meals come after prayer),
which comes after Kabbalat Shabbat,
which comes after adding to Shabbat,
by which time it is already "all your work is done" for this reason –
consequently, there is an increase in quantity of time,
and certainly a distinction in quality,
between the work on Shabbat eve and the eating of the Shabbat meal,
so that at the time of eating the Shabbat meal, the feeling of exertion and toil of Shabbat eve is no longer present.
From this it is understood that the "Vayechulu" on the Shabbat day of the work of the preceding days is on a level that is entirely separate from the level of work during the weekdays –
because during the weekdays his service is with toil and exertion and he becomes fatigued,
"by the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread",
but on Shabbat and the Shabbat meal it is "all your work is done",
the level of rest and delight in essence,
in which he has no feeling of fatigue from the service and work of the weekdays.
Based on what was discussed above –
that Shabbat is entirely separate from weekdays –
one will also understand the matter regarding which there was an inquiry, investigation, and discussion whether "Shabbat from which all days are blessed" is not only the six weekdays,
but also the seventh day
(the coming Shabbat),
and it was explained
(as above in section 1)
that it is logical to say so,
because:
It is a perplexing thing to say that specifically the weekdays receive a blessing from Shabbat, and
(the coming)
Shabbat itself does not receive a blessing! And especially according to what is explained in Chassidus and in many places that the Shabbat day concludes the order of times,
it is not fitting to say that in this conclusion of the order of times there is no blessing from the preceding Shabbat
(and the weekdays do have the blessing)!
Therefore it was said that it is logical to say that "Shabbat from which all days are blessed" also applies to the coming Shabbat.
A question was asked on this20:
From what the Father writes in his notes on the Zohar21 that the Shabbat day "is the seventh day, Binah
(the mother of the children)...
from which the six days of Zeir Anpin are blessed",
there appears to be a contradiction to the above that the blessing of Shabbat is also for the seventh day,
unlike what the Father writes with reasoning that Shabbat,
Binah,
blesses "the six days of Zeir Anpin",
and Zeir Anpin does not have seven extremities but only six extremities?
In the "Kovtzim" there were printed several explanations that were intended to be said about this. But as discussed many times,
when answering a question one can answer the matter in itself,
without regard to whether it aligns with the continuation of the discussion before and after on this matter. A more correct resolution, however, is one that explains the matter in a way that is consistent with the flow of the discussion on this topic.
Regarding our matter:
It was intended to answer that the matter under discussion, that Shabbat also blesses the seventh day, aligns with a second opinion in the Zohar there that the blessing of Shabbat is
(not only in Zeir Anpin, but)
also in Malchut,
which corresponds to Shabbat.
But one cannot say this,
because according to this it would turn out that there are two opinions on this matter
(one opinion that the blessing is only in the six extremities of Zeir Anpin,
six days,
and a second opinion –
also in Malchut, Shabbat) –
and in general one must always endeavor to explain as "one said one thing and one said another, and they do not disagree"22. And especially in our case:
The matter that was discussed, that Shabbat is also blessed from the preceding Shabbat –
is based on a logical reasoning
(it is unthinkable to say that Shabbat does not receive a blessing),
it is not possible to say that it is connected to a dispute:
If it were learned from a verse,
from the words of our Sages and the like,
then if there is a question about it,
one could say that there is a dispute on the matter,
"these and those are the words of the living God"23,
But when the entire foundation is a logical reasoning
(it is unthinkable that Shabbat does not receive a blessing) –
if there is another reasoning,
i.e., that there is a reasoning for this and a reasoning for that –
then the second reasoning weakens the entire reasoning
(why Shabbat is also blessed).
And so the explanation of the matter is –
simply,
and specifically for this reason one does not pay attention to it and one does not ponder what is being discussed.
As discussed many times,
human nature is that simple and ordinary things are not paid attention to,
specifically because of the simplicity of the matter:
It states24 "Lift up your eyes on high and see who created these,"
and "The heavens declare the glory of G-d."25 One must understand:
What is this coming to teach us?
It is speaking here about a believer in Tehillim and verses of Tanach and sayings of Chazal,
he certainly believes in the verse "In the beginning G-d created the heavens and the earth." Consequently, he himself understands that the heavens and the earth and all their hosts were created by the Most High,
and when he goes out into the street,
or he has windows in his house,
he sees the sky and this automatically evokes in him the "see who created these." And "the glory of G-d" –
so why is it necessary to inform him and tell him in a verse "Lift up your eyes on high and see who created these" and "The heavens declare the glory of G-d"?!
And regarding this is the question on the words of Chazal26 on the verse27 "Let every soul praise G-d,"
"For every breath a person breathes, a person must praise the Creator":
He is a believer in this statement of Chazal,
he certainly also believes that the Most High created man,
"Let us make man, etc.,"28
and created him from absolute nothingness,
even if he does not yet know from the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov29 that the coming into being from nothing to something is at every single moment, he believes that the Most High created the world and man from nothing to something –
so what is this coming to teach us, that he must praise the Most High for every breath he breathes, that one needs to inform him of this?!
And all the more so, a fortiori:
When a miracle happens to him,
for example –
he wins a "lottery,"
it evokes in him praise and thanksgiving to Hashem,
even though winning the "lottery" is not something necessary for his life,
and as we see that many others also participated in the "lottery" and they did not win. Nevertheless, they continue their lives with joy and a good heart,
because the win is not something necessary. Nonetheless, it evokes in him praise and thanksgiving to Hashem –
how much more so when it comes to breaths. For this is something necessary for a person and at every single moment,
constantly there must be in him "run and return" through his breath,
this should certainly evoke in him praise and thanksgiving to Hashem.
So why do Chazal need to inform and tell us that "for every breath a person breathes, a person must praise the Creator"?
The answer to this is –
as above:
The nature of man is that regarding simple and ordinary things he becomes accustomed to them and pays no attention to them:
Since that which the Most High created the heavens and earth is so simple for him,
it is possible that he will pay no attention to it and forget what it is about,
and consequently not see through this "who created these" and "the glory of G-d." Therefore one must inform him:
"Lift up your eyes on high" –
raise your eyes and see what is there –
"and see who created these"!
Since his breathing has become for him the most ordinary thing,
at every single moment of his life,
and he also sees that animals and beasts breathe,
all the more so the ignorant –
it is specifically because of this habituation that it can be that a person breathes for 120 years and, heaven forbid, does not grasp that he must praise and thank the Most High for it...!
Therefore Chazal need to inform us of this.
And this applies to intellectual matters:
When one is immersed in the intellect of a certain most simple matter,
due to the great sharpness and deliberation about how the matter is in the intellect –
one can forget what it is about. He is immersed in the intellect of the thing,
consequently he first thinks of reasons this way:
then when he thinks himself deeper into it,
he finds contradictions to this;
געפינט ער סתירות לזה;
and then he arrives at yet a deeper reason, etc., etc.,
consequently he can forget about the essential matter about which he began to think...
And this applies to this matter –
that Shabbat, from it are blessed the days that follow –
that because one thinks only about the intellect and reasoning within this,
one has forgotten the essential matter about which one is speaking –
the matter of blessing.
A blessing –
as we see it in the blessings in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah –
means,
that one blesses the one who is in need of a certain matter that he should have it.
And simply:
Previously it was customary that on Erev Shabbat and similarly on Erev Yom Kippur, children and also married children with their children,
also small children –
would come to their parents in order to receive a blessing.
And it is simple to understand,
that the father or grandfather blessed each child according to the measure of his years and the things that he needs,
and not with a blessing equal for all children:
He did not bless a small child that he should merit to stand under the wedding canopy,
because such a child is not yet at the stage of getting married,
rather he blessed him that he should succeed in learning Alef-Beit and the like.
A child who had already married and has children, he did not bless that he should make a good match and have children –
because he already married and already has children;
ווייל ער האט שוין חתונה געהאט און האט שוין קינדער;
rather he blessed him that he should have what he needs.
And the reason for this is simply:
A blessing must be (a)
relevant to the one being blessed,
i.e., a matter that the one being blessed needs to attain because he does not have it otherwise, and (b)
according to the vessels of the one being blessed.
That is, that he has the vessels to receive the blessing.
Consequently, it is not fitting that a father should bless a small child with a blessing that he should succeed in learning the deepest secrets, which is relevant for "one of forty years for understanding"30,
because this is a matter that (a)
has no relevance to him,
he does not need to attain it, and (b)
he does not have the vessels to receive it. This is not even within the category of "He bestows good upon them, they cannot bear it"31,
because the study of the secrets of the Torah and the like is entirely not in the "world" of the child. Rather, one must bless him that he should succeed in learning Alef-Beit, which is relevant to him and he has the vessels to receive it.
And similarly regarding the blessing for an adult who has already married,
that it must also be a matter that he needs and according to the measure of his vessels.
And similarly a child who is before marriage –
one must bless him in a matter that he needs and according to his measure,
and so on regarding each one.
If someone would not hold thus –
he would be regarded as one who is entirely not put together regarding what it is about:
they would say that he is not normal...
And this is not speaking about blessings of several different
(two,
three,
four and so on)
fathers, each of whom blesses his child according to his measure,
rather about one father who has several children,
and he blesses each one according to his measure,
in that which the child needs to attain and for which he has vessels.
Similarly regarding the blessing of Shabbat upon the days that follow it:
Shabbat blesses each of the days according to the measure of that day,
i.e., a blessing in that which (a)
the day needs, and (b)
that which the day has vessels to receive:
The weekdays –
which correspond to the six extremities of Zeir Anpin –
Shabbat blesses with a blessing regarding the matter and work of the weekdays,
the days of action,
i.e., regarding action and labor and exertion,
as in "And Hashem your God will bless you in all that you do"32. If Shabbat were to bless the weekdays with a blessing of "and they ceased"
(cessation and delight)
"all your work is done" (!) –
it would have absolutely no place. Similar to how it is not fitting that a father should bless his young son that he should marry.
However, the day of Shabbat, Shabbat blesses
(the preceding one)
regarding the matter of Shabbat –
"and they ceased"
(ascent and delight)
"all your work is done" and the like.
If Shabbat were to bless the coming Shabbat with a blessing regarding matters of labor and the like (!) –
it would have absolutely no place. Similar to how it is not fitting that a father should bless his married son that he should make a good match.
[And similarly, each weekday in particular, Shabbat blesses it with its unique blessing in accordance with the matter of that day:
Sunday, Shabbat blesses with the matter of "Let there be light"33. It is not fitting to bless that day with the matter of "Let us make man in our image etc." of the sixth day. Monday, Shabbat blesses with the matter that the "and He separated"34 should be transformed for good35. Tuesday –
with the matter of the doubling of "it was good" in it36.
And similarly the remaining days –
each one regarding its unique matter].
But these two blessings—
the blessing for the six weekdays and the blessing for Shabbos—
come from the one and the same Shabbos.
This is like all blessings of children come from the one and the same father.
And based on this, the difference is understood between what is discussed in the Zohar and in the note of my father that Shabbos blesses the six days,
the six extremities of Zeir Anpin,
and what was discussed at the farbrengen that Shabbos also blesses the coming Shabbos:
In the Zohar
(and in the note)
it speaks about the blessing of Shabbos for the six weekdays
(corresponding to the six extremities of Zeir Anpin),
one cannot mix in and speak about the blessing for the coming Shabbos—
because it is an entirely different type of blessing:
The blessing for the six weekdays is in matters of work,
"in all that you do",
and this blessing is entirely not fitting for Shabbos. Therefore it is stated in the Zohar
(and in the note)
that the blessing is from Binah
(only)
to the six extremities of Zeir Anpin,
because the blessing
(which is appropriate for weekdays)
about which the Zohar speaks indeed does not apply to Shabbos.
Additionally, the Zohar adds,
that the blessing for the six weekdays
(the six extremities of Zeir Anpin)
is also for the Sefirah of Malchus, i.e.
[not the day of Shabbos,
Malchus in itself,
because this Zohar speaks about the blessing for the six weekdays (Zeir Anpin) and not for Malchus in itself (Shabbos) which requires a different type of blessing, but rather]
the night of the weekdays
(not only the day),
as is known37 that night corresponds to the Sefirah of Malchus
(and day corresponds to Zeir Anpin),
which is like Malchus being included in Zeir Anpin,
not as Malchus is in itself
(which is the day of Shabbos),
because this Zohar speaks about the blessing to Zeir Anpin,
not to Malchus in itself
(Shabbos)
which requires a different type of blessing.
And at the farbrengen another thing was revealed:
that Shabbos has not only the power to bless the six weekdays
(Zeir Anpin),
(ז"א),
the days of work,
as discussed in the Zohar,
because Shabbos is higher than them—
but also the power to bless
(the coming) Shabbos,
i.e., that although Shabbos itself has holiness from its own essence,
"it is inherently sanctified",
nevertheless, the preceding Shabbos adds even more through its blessing. Because Shabbos has within itself a matter that is higher
(even)
than Shabbos
(not only higher than the weekdays),
therefore Shabbos has the power to bless the coming Shabbos.
And this is similar to how all days are blessed from Shabbos,
that Shabbos blesses not only the six days of the week,
but also the seventh day
(Shabbos),
so too is this on the other side—
regarding the "Vayechulu"
(ascent and completion,
and delight)
on Shabbos,
that on Shabbos there is an ascent not only from the six days of the week that preceded it,
but also from the previous day of Shabbos.
That is, just as Shabbos has within itself the power to bless not only the six days of the week
(because Shabbos is higher than them),
but also Shabbos
(because Shabbos has within itself also a matter that is higher than Shabbos)—
so too does Shabbos have the power to elevate not only the six days of the week
(that preceded it),
but also the
(previous)
day of Shabbos,
which has holiness and delight from its own essence,
to an even higher level. Additionally:
Shabbos not only elevates the six days of the week to their source and root—
the place of delight—
from which they descended,
for then "buyer and seller are called merchants
(in vain)
"38,
" 38,
nothing would have been gained,
rather a descent for the purpose of ascent—
to an even higher level in delight than that from which the six days descended.
Regarding our matter, it follows from the above,
that on this Shabbos there is an ascent up to the level of delight
("Vayechulu")
of the previous Shabbos—
Yud Shevat.
That is, however high Yud Shevat is from its own essence,
as is known the elevation of a day of hilula of a tzaddik,
that then there is an ascent higher and higher
(as explained in Iggeres HaKodesh, siman 27 and 28,
and in the discourses of Lag BaOmer39 and in other discourses of our Rebbes, our leaders,
up to the one of the hilula and his father and his father's father,
that he invested in all the matters of the concept of "from the outset, go over")—
on this Shabbos there is an even higher ascent and drawing of delight into the day of hilula of Yud Shevat
(higher than Yud Shevat has from itself),
because holiness is infinite,
consequently ascents up to infinity are applicable to it.
But after all the elevations in this and after the aforementioned pilpulim,
which are all fine and good,
the main thing is however as the words of the Mishnah40 –
the deed is the main thing. As the Baal HaHilula and all the Rebbeim demand,
that after all the most elevated matters there must be a "therefore" in actual deed41 –
"Tafaro da placho"42.
And it is emphasized also in the current Torah portion
(when the day of the hilula falls) –
Parshat Yitro –
in the portion of the Giving of the Torah:
At the Giving of the Torah the Ten Commandments were given –
"And Elokim spoke all these words, saying"43. Our Nesi'im ask the question44,
why was this with such a great noise,
with "thunder and lightning"45,
"and Mount Sinai was all in smoke"46,
"thunder and flaming torches"47? –
The Ten Commandments are simple matters,
that even if they had not been commanded one would have had to fulfill them,
as our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said48 "Had the Torah not been given
(Heaven forbid –
(ח"ו –
as the Rebbe (the Maharash"b), of blessed memory, would add many times)
we would learn modesty from the cat, etc.",
so what is the storm about this?!
Nevertheless, we see that the Giving of the Torah with all the noise and thunder and lightning was specifically regarding simple matters in actual deed
(as the explanation of this is explained in the maamarim of our Nesi'im49).
And so too regarding the day of the hilula:
One might think:
We are speaking about the day of the hilula of the Nasi of our generation,
which is connected with the secrets of secrets of secrets of the Torah,
the most elevated level in Torah,
and he
און ער
(the person)
studies these matters –
he has no connection to them,
but since he merited to hear and study them,
he reviews the words of our Nesi'im which became Torah called by their name50,
and in addition this is his day of hilula,
at which time all these matters are elevated even more to a more elevated level –
so what does one speak with him about at that time? About actual deed:
Give charity,
act in "love your fellow as yourself"51:
and they make a farbrengen and trouble him for hours!
He is holding at a most elevated level of the secrets of secrets of the Torah –
one should speak with him about the most elevated matters,
not about the simplest matters of actual deed,
which he knows himself:
He knows himself that one must have ahavat Yisrael because it is an explicit verse in the Torah,
and likewise charity –
"open, you shall open"52,
even many times
(as Rashi explains53),
etc.?!
One tells him:
So it was at the Giving of the Torah –
although the Giving of the Torah is a most elevated matter,
"And Hashem descended upon Mount Sinai"54 etc. –
what did the Holy One, blessed be He, say? Specifically the simplest matters in actual deed,
which seemingly even without Torah one could learn from animals!
Nevertheless, specifically at the Giving of the Torah were these things said,
and specifically about this there was a great noise! –
Thus Chassidus explains.
And "And Elokim spoke all these words, saying"55,
as is known the explanation of "saying"56,
that the Holy One, blessed be He, spoke the Ten Commandments
("all these words"),
simple matters,
in such a manner,
that every Jew,
until the end of all generations,
should be able to repeat and say them over –
"saying" –
in the manner that the Holy One, blessed be He, said them at the time of the Giving of the Torah.
That is, not only as "and Elokim will answer him with a voice"57,
with the voice of Moshe,
as discussed in the previous farbrengen58 that every Jew has this power,
but every Jew has the power of "saying" –
that which "And Elokim spoke".
That is, that after the Giving of the Torah, in every Jew there is the emphasis and the entire storm –
even when it comes to the most elevated matters,
like the day of the hilula –
the matter of actual deed of simple matters
("all these words").
"Had the Torah not been given" Heaven forbid, one would indeed have learned these matters from animals and beasts. Before the Giving of the Torah there were also animals and one could have learned from them these matters. As it was with the Patriarchs before the Giving of the Torah.
But a Jew after the Giving of the Torah –
the entire storm and noise of the Giving of the Torah is that one should fulfill the simple matters in actual deed.
And regarding this: a Jew who studied after Matan Torah in a "cheder" or yeshivah of our Rebbeim, Nesi'einu,
where the Rebbeim declared that the students are "nerot leha'ir"59 –
this is the reality, and one has no choice in the matter,
one must be "nerot leha'ir"!
The difference is only –
since free choice was not taken away –
he has the choice:
if he is a wise man,
he does not put this off for later and immediately fulfills all these matters in actual deed and does everything as a "ner leha'ir",
but if he is, Heaven forbid, a fool,
he can put it off,
and ultimately one must compel him –
coercion through words.
I was asked:
If someone was born a fool,
this comes from the fact that the angel so proclaimed60,
so if one has a complaint –
one should have the complaint not against him, but against the angel!
The answer to this is:
Torah is the master of reality and can change a reality. As we see even regarding a minor girl who finds herself somewhere at the ends of the earth61,
all the more so can Torah change his reality. Consequently, even if the angel proclaimed upon him that he would be a fool,
he can become master over this by connecting himself with Torah and changing the reality!
This is like what was with the chosen one of the Patriarchs62 –
Yaakov Avinu:
he had the power to wage war with an angel,
and through this, from "Yaakov" his name became "Yisrael",
on account of "for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed"63.
So too every Jew –
for "even though he sinned, he is still a Jew"64 –
has the power to wage war with the angel who proclaimed that he would be a fool,
and he should be transformed into a wise man!
And this is the lesson in connection with the day of the hillula:
After all the storm and the most sublime elevations of the day of the hillula –
it must come down "taforo da plaho" –
actual deed.
And not "cheder lifnim micheder",
rather "yafotzu ma'aynotecha chutzah" –
to be "nerot leha'ir",
and to illuminate and influence also upon the surroundings.
And from this Shabbat, when the day of the hillula is elevated to a more elevated place, up to the level of delight –
one has the power that the service should be with delight and "kol melachtecha asuy".
It only needs to be –
in the language of the Baal HaHillula65 –
"imdu hechen kulchem" to receive all these matters,
one receives them all with all the blessings and effluences,
"miyado hamlei'ah hapetuchah hakedoshah veharechavah"66,
and also –
as it states in the Baal Shem Tov's siddur –
"hagedushah"
(with a gimel).
And since only a few moments remain,
and at most –
a few days,
until the coming of Mashiach Tzidkeinu,
if there is still someone who is not yet a wise man –
one cannot wait for him,
one compels him,
in pleasant ways and in ways of peace, that he should become a wise man, G-d-fearing and a scholar,
so that he too should run together with all Jews,
"be'na'areinu uvezkeineinu, be'vaneinu uvevnoteinu"67 –
to greet Mashiach Tzidkeinu,
"na'oh".
This is similar, but not exactly,
as regarding the question and explanation mentioned above concerning the matter of Shabbat, from which all the days are blessed –
this also pertained to what was discussed in the farbrengen of the previous [Shabbat]*67:
It was then discussed that among the four "Rashei Shanim" that the Mishnah68 enumerates –
on all of which
(also on the fifteenth of Shevat69)
one does not say Tachanun –
the fifteenth of Shevat
(Rosh Hashanah La'Ilanot,
according to the opinion of Beit Hillel)
is distinguished from the others regarding the recitation of Tachanun:
During the first three New Years
(on the first of Nisan,
on the first of Elul,
on the first of Tishrei)
one does not recite Tachanun simply:
"The first of Nisan." "The first of Elul" and "the first of Tishrei" are Rosh Chodesh,
and on every Rosh Chodesh the law is that one does not recite Tachanun
[as is known that Rosh Chodesh is called a Moed and it is not a day of work,
according to the custom of women not to do any work on Rosh Chodesh, at least not the work of sewing (and the like) –
as it is written the first time in Chavah "and they sewed fig leaves"].
In addition to this, since "the first of Tishrei" is a Moed according to the Torah, therefore one does not recite Tachanun at that time.
However, regarding the fifteenth of Shevat, one does not find in the Gemara and Rishonim etc. any source that one should not recite Tachanun at that time
(this is understandable according to the opinion of Beit Shammai that the New Year for trees is on the first of Shevat,
it is understandable,
but according to the opinion of Beit Hillel, that the law is like him, this is not understandable).
Rather, the rationale for this is according to the explanation of the commentators regarding the prohibition of fasting on the fifteenth of Shevat –
based on the Gemara in Moed Katan
(regarding a different matter)
that when several matters "are concluded together,
we learn from each other",
so too regarding our matter,
since the Mishnah lists the four "together" –
therefore "they are similar to each other",
and just as the first three New Years are forbidden for fasting,
so too on the fifteenth of Shevat.
And so too one can say regarding the recitation of Tachanun,
that just as one does not recite it on the first three New Years,
so too one does not recite it on the fourth New Year –
for trees,
the fifteenth of Shevat.
It was discussed that based on this it is understood that there is an elevation in the fifteenth of Shevat relative to the other New Years:
It is explained in Chassidus the superiority of a custom of Israel
(which is not written in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah)
relative to a law in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah,
that this derives from a higher "place",
a level that the "limitations" even of the Written Torah and even of the Oral Torah –
which has "maidens without number" –
cannot contain it,
therefore the custom is not written there. As this is explained regarding the superiority of Hakafot
(which is a custom of Israel)
relative to the wine libation
(which is written in the Written Torah)
and the water libation
(which is written in the Oral Torah).
So too one can say also regarding the fifteenth of Shevat:
Since the non-recitation of Tachanun on this day is not explicitly stated in the Gemara etc.
[And even though it is stated in the responsa of the great ones of Israel,
which is also a part of the Oral Torah,
but it is not stated in the Gemara,
this shows that the Gemara part of the Oral Torah cannot contain it]
this shows that it comes from a higher level
(in this matter)
than the other New Years where it is explicitly stated
(in the Gemara)
that one does not recite Tachanun at that time.
In addition, it was discussed that there is an elevation in the fifteenth of Shevat,
the New Year for trees,
relative to the other New Years:
Regarding the New Year for trees, there is a dispute in the Mishnah between Beit Shammai and Beit Hillel,
according to Beit Shammai it is on the first of Shevat and according to Beit Hillel –
on the fifteenth of Shevat. And the law remains like Beit Hillel.
It turns out that the fifteenth of Shevat also contains within it the superiority of the advantage of light over darkness –
that initially there is a dispute in this,
similar to the matter of "darkness"
(in the Torah),
and afterwards the clarification of the law becomes like Beit Hillel,
the advantage of light over darkness.
In the Sefirot:
Hillel corresponds to the Sefirah of Chessed and Shammai –
the Sefirah of Gevurah. And initially both opinions of Shammai and Hillel were in force. Afterwards, "when a Bat Kol went forth, the law is always like Beit Hillel",
until in a manner that "Beit Shammai in the place of Beit Hillel is not a Mishnah",
and then comes the superiority of the Sefirah of Tiferet
(Rachamim),
the middle line,
from the aspect of "and Hillel, the law is like him",
and the middle line is even higher than Chessed.
That is to say, that from the aspect that the law is like Beit Hillel, there is both the matter of Chessed and the matter of Rachamim
(Tiferet),
the middle line. 85*
And this matter exists always,
because even after the law was decided like Beit Hillel, the opinion of Beit Shammai exists,
"these and those are the words of the living God",
and furthermore –
in the future the law will be like Beit Shammai.
It was also explained,
that the fifteenth of Shevat and the elevation mentioned above have a connection
(not only with that day itself, but)
with every single day in the service of each and every one of Israel –
because Hillel is from the term "behilo nero",
he illuminates the "candle of Hashem is the soul of man",
as explained and discussed there. And in addition, there is the matter in the service of man of the advantage of light from darkness,
by virtue of the law being like Hillel.
Regarding this, a "blatant difficulty" was asked, seemingly:
Also concerning "the New Year for animal tithes" there is a dispute in the Mishnah:
The first Tanna holds that it is "on the first of Elul" and Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon hold "on the first of Tishrei". And the law remains like Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon.
It would seem, superficially, that the elevation of the advantage of light from darkness is not only regarding the New Year for trees,
but also regarding the "New Year for animal tithes"?
It is as discussed many times,
when one comes upon a difficulty, one should not remain in doubt with it and then walk away from it,
rather –
think deeply into it for an additional period of time,
a mil's journey,
at least a few minutes,
in that matter you will also come upon an answer!...
The explanation of this:
In disputes themselves, there are levels:
A dispute in an entire matter. A dispute only in one detail,
i.e., that both opinions hold the same thing in the generality of the matter,
only they argue about one detail.
For example, as we find in the dispute of Shammai and Hillel themselves:
"In three places Shammai and Hillel disagreed."
I.e., that in most matters they had the same opinion,
and only in three things did they argue. Because they both learned and received the same Torah from Shmaya and Avtalyon,
as explained in the continuation of the year 5672, that they received in general the same matter, only
(when it comes down)
in some details there are differences between them. Afterwards,
because there was a decline in the Torah –
the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel had a dispute in many matters.
In addition –
A dispute of two who derive a matter from the same hermeneutical principle
(from the principles by which the Torah is expounded),
or from the same verse,
only in that itself there is a dispute. Or a dispute where the two opinions derive from two separate principles or verses.
According to this, one will also understand in our matter –
the difference between the dispute between the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel regarding the New Year for trees and the dispute between the first Tanna and Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon regarding the New Year for animal tithes:
Regarding animal tithes (a)
both opinions hold that the New Year is on a Rosh Chodesh
(the difference is only that according to the first Tanna it is "on the first of Elul",
and according to Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon "on the first of Tishrei").
And consequently, according to both opinions, one does not say Tachanun on that day simply
(because it is Rosh Chodesh). And (b)
both opinions derive it from the same verse –
"they expounded the same verse"
(as the Gemara explains it).
However, the dispute between the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel regarding the New Year for trees is a stronger dispute: (a)
The House of Shammai hold that it is on the first of Shevat and the House of Hillel –
on the fifteenth of Shevat
(not like the New Year for animal tithes where according to both opinions it is on a Rosh Chodesh).
And consequently, there is also the novelty according to the opinion of the House of Hillel
(as the law is)
that one does not say Tachanun on that day
(even though it is not Rosh Chodesh),
as above. (b)
Their dispute does not consist of a derivation from a verse,
and moreover the same verse
(like the two opinions regarding the New Year for animal tithes),
rather from two separate logical reasons.
Therefore, the emphasis on the advantage of light from darkness is stronger in the fifteenth of Shevat
(the New Year for trees)
than in the New Year for animal tithes.
In addition to this, one could say –
and with an introduction:
There has, unfortunately, become a practice among teachers and even among heads of yeshivas,
that one teaches a student only matters in the Torah,
but not how he should learn Torah,
i.e., the methods of study.
One teaches him a topic in depth and understanding and sharpness,
until "uprooting mountains and grinding them against each other",
consequently the student goes away and he knows the topic;
במילא גייט דער תלמיד אוועק און ער ווייסט די סוגיא;
but when one asks him about a second topic,
he does not know how to approach it,
because he was not taught the methods of study,
how he should learn Torah.
And regarding the methods of study itself, there are differences between the various parts of the Torah;
ובנוגע לדרכי הלימוד גופא זיינען דא חילוקים צווישן די פארשידענע חלקי התורה;
Each part of the Torah has its method of study as one must study it. So too regarding the study of the Mishnah,
that there is a method of study in the Mishnah.
That is, in addition to the knowledge of what is stated in the Mishnah,
and if one does not understand the Mishnah, one studies the Gemara,
and if one does not understand the Gemara, one studies Rashi, Tosafot, and commentators –
one must teach a student how one must study a Mishnah:
How the Gemara derives an explanation in the Mishnah. And whether the explanation of the Gemara in the Mishnah is in a manner that the Gemara negates all other possibilities in the explanation of the Mishnah and nothing remains except the explanation of the Gemara,
or the Gemara teaches one manner according to the halachah,
but one can study the plain meaning in that Mishnah differently than the Gemara.
And so forth, many details regarding the method of study in the Mishnah.
As we find in the Commentary on the Mishnah of the Rambam, that he explains an explanation in the Mishnah not like the explanation of the Gemara in that Mishnah. The Tiferet Yisrael explains,
that "although in the Gemara they did not explain thus,
since regarding the law it does not make a difference,
permission is given to explain",
therefore the Rambam explains a different explanation in the Mishnah because it is according to the plain meaning more straightforward than the explanation of the Gemara.
And a proof for the matter:
Although there is the explanation of Avot deRabbi Natan on the Mishnahs in Tractate Avot –
we see that the commentators of the Mishnah in most places explain different explanations in the Mishnahs than the explanation of Avot deRabbi Natan when it is not relevant to halachah
(of course based on the principles by which the Torah is expounded).
Furthermore:
In the Book of the Hand,
which is a book of halachah
("halachot halachot"),
it is known that the Rambam brings many times verses as a proof for a matter where the Gemara does not bring the proof from a verse. And furthermore:
He sometimes brings a different verse than the Gemara brings on the same matter!
One explains regarding this
(in the principles of the Rambam from the great ones of Israel),
that when the verse is not relevant to halachah,
and the verse is closer to the plain meaning of the matter –
the Rambam can bring a verse that the Gemara does not bring,
or even a different verse than the Gemara brings
(of course based on the principles by which the Torah is expounded).
And this itself is a part of halachah
(of course from this that the Rambam brings the verses in his book of halachot).
About this one can say regarding the Mishnah at the beginning of Tractate Rosh Hashanah –
concerning the four New Years:
Regarding that which the Mishnah says that "there are four New Years" –
the Gemara says that "four, according to everyone".
That is, that also according to Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon, that "the New Year for animal tithe" is "on the first of Tishrei"
(and not "on the first of Elul"),
according to which it would seemingly turn out that there are only three New Years
(the first of Nisan,
the first of Tishrei, and the fifteenth of Shevat),
they also hold that "there are four New Years" –
because "according to Rabbi Shimon, there are four, excluding the second tithe",
that is, that one indeed does not count the New Year for the second tithe,
but one counts as the New Year for the Festivals the fifteenth of Nisan. Consequently, it turns out "four New Years"
(the first of Nisan,
the fifteenth of Nisan,
the first of Tishrei, and the fifteenth of Shevat)
[However, according to Rabbi Meir,
who holds that "on one Festival one transgresses 'do not delay'",
one does not count the fifteenth of Nisan as the New Year for the Festivals,
and the four New Years are from the aspect of the New Year for animal tithe on the first of Elul].
Incidentally:
Also according to this,
that according to the view of Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon, the fifteenth of Nisan is also a New Year
(not only the first of Nisan) –
there is a novelty regarding the New Year for trees on the fifteenth of Shevat from the aspect of the recitation of Tachanun,
because on the fifteenth of Nisan one does not recite Tachanun in any case, due to the fact that it is the first day of Passover,
but regarding the recitation of Tachanun on the fifteenth of Shevat, it is a novelty from the custom of Israel.
According to this, a question arises on the Rambam and Bartenura
[whom Chassidus brings in several places]:
In their commentary on the first Mishnah in Rosh Hashanah, "there are four New Years", the Rambam and Rabbi Ovadiah Bartenura explain several matters –
but they do not address the aforementioned difficulty in the Mishnah,
which is a "blatant difficulty" –
how does it turn out "four New Years" according to the view of Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Shimon, who do not hold that "the first of Elul" is the New Year for animal tithe!
The Tosefot Yom Tov and other later authorities indeed take issue with this in their commentary on the Mishnah,
and answer what the Gemara says, that in their opinion the fourth New Year is the fifteenth of Nisan;
און ענטפערן וואס די גמרא זאגט אז לדעתם איז דער פערטער ר"ה חמשה עשר בניסן;
but the Rambam and Raavad do not take issue with this, even though there is a "blatant difficulty" in the Mishnah?!
According to the above, it can be said that the Rambam follows his own system,
that when it does not pertain to practical law, one may interpret the Mishnah with a different interpretation than the Gemara's interpretation,
an interpretation that is more straightforward according to the simple meaning than the Gemara's interpretation.
Rabbeinu Shimon and Rabbi Eliezer,
who hold that the New Year for animal tithes is on the first of Tishrei,
hold that there are indeed only three New Years and not four.
And even though the Gemara says "four, according to everyone"
(and explains that even according to Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbeinu Shimon there are four New Years) –
this is the law and not otherwise, Heaven forbid,
but according to the Rambam's system, this does not preclude a different interpretation of the Mishnah
(which has no practical difference in law),
that according to the simple reading, Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbeinu Shimon learn that there are only three New Years. And especially since in the Gemara itself there are those who say there are five,
six,
seven, etc. New Years
(and not specifically four),
consequently one can also say that according to Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbeinu Shimon there are three New Years.
Therefore, the Rambam does not protest at all in his commentary on the Mishnah.
And likewise, neither does the Raavad.
However, the Tosefot Yom Tov brings the Gemara's interpretation –
even though he also knew the Rambam's system,
as he himself explains it
(as above) –
because he wants to protest that in addition to the interpretation of the Rambam and the Raavad in the Mishnah, there is also the Gemara's interpretation,
that even according to their opinion there are four New Years.
Likewise, regarding Rashi on the verse of the previous Shabbat, "A dwelling place for You, You have made, Hashem; the Sanctuary, my Lord, Your hands have established,"
"The reason for the zakef gadol is to separate it from the Divine Name that follows it,
the Sanctuary which Your hands have established, Hashem,
the Holy Temple is beloved, for the world was created with one hand, etc., and the Sanctuary with two hands,
and when will it be built with two hands? At the time when Hashem will reign forever and ever, in the future to come, when all the kingship is His" –
a question was asked about this:
All the commentators and
(most)
of our Sages of blessed memory learn that "the Sanctuary, my Lord, Your hands have established" refers to the same Holy Temple as "a dwelling place for You, You have made, Hashem,"
and that "Hashem will reign forever and ever" is an entirely separate matter;
און אז "ה' ימלוך לעולם ועד" איז לגמרי א באזונדער ענין;
however, Rashi interprets differently from all the commentators and our Sages of blessed memory –
that "the Sanctuary, my Lord, Your hands have established" is a separate matter from "a dwelling place for You, You have made, Hashem,"
"the Sanctuary –
which Hashem has established,"
a different Sanctuary,
which specifically will be "established by [two] hands,"
and when will it be –
forever and ever,
when "Hashem will reign forever and ever"?!
Several explanations were written about this, as printed in the "Kovtzim" –
and may their strength be increased,
and may they continue writing –
and in each of these explanations there is a point that is upheld according to the simple meaning,
but even according to these explanations, it still remains not understood:
Firstly –
since it must be explained according to the simple meaning for a five-year-old studying Scripture,
and indeed points were written in the "Kovtzim" that are according to the simple meaning –
why was it necessary to write an explanation that contains a page and a half and the like,
when it could have been written with great brevity in one point so that a five-year-old could understand it?!
When one writes such length –
the five-year-old argues:
Why is he being troubled,
let them give him an answer simply and briefly,
and then he can go play!...
One should not have written with such length, but rather write the point briefly, as it is according to the simple meaning.
Furthermore, there were those who brought in their lengthy explanations sources from early authorities, later authorities, and commentators,
even including one –
from Likkutei Sichot,
volume such-and-such, note such-and-such. The child argues:
What do they want from him,
he wants a simple explanation briefly and simply,
and not that they should send him to look in other places,
and among them –
also Likkutei Sichot of I, the Holy One,
volume such-and-such in such-and-such a note,
which note is without punctuation...
And furthermore, the main point:
If the explanation in Rashi is so simple
(according to the plain meaning),
and one cannot learn it in another way,
because in the verse two things stand,
"a place for Your dwelling, etc." and "the Sanctuary of the Lord, etc." one must say that this refers to two separate things –
as was explained in the "Kovtzim" –
why do all the commentators
(including the plain-sense interpreters of Scripture)
and most of our Sages, of blessed memory, not learn this way,
but rather that "a place for Your dwelling, etc." and "the Sanctuary of the Lord, etc." are one matter?!
One must surely say that there is a strong source and foundation to learn not like Rashi,
so why does Rashi not learn this way?
And this is a question that even a five-year-old will one day ask,
because when he grows older and will see what the commentators, etc. say,
he will ask the question:
How was he told that the explanation in Rashi is so simple –
when all the commentators,
including the plain-sense interpreters of Scripture,
learn differently?
And the explanation regarding this:
All these commentators follow their method and Rashi follows his method,
and this compels each of them to learn according to their interpretation:
The method of all the commentators
(Ibn Ezra,
Radak, etc.) is,
that in a song
(in the Tanakh)
there can be a duplication for the beauty of the rhetoric. Consequently, there is no difficulty why it says twice about the same thing in a song. Therefore, they do not learn that "a place for Your dwelling, etc." and "the Sanctuary of the Lord, etc." must mean two separate things,
and one must innovate that "the Sanctuary of the Lord, etc." refers to the future Sanctuary, etc. –
because in the manner of song, one duplicates a matter for the beauty of the rhetoric,
as we see in the Song of the Sea that in every verse there is a duplication in the same matter.
However, the method of Rashi is,
that when two expressions stand in a song
(even)
the second expression adds something.
And even though Rashi explains at the beginning of the Song of the Sea
(on the duplication of the phrase "gloriously glorious")
"and so the entire song you will find duplicated,
'My strength and song, Yah, and He was my salvation,
'The Lord is a man of war, the Lord is His name,
and so all of them'" –
nevertheless, we see that in practice Rashi explains what the duplication adds in every verse in the song
[as he says in this verse itself:
"The duplication came to say that He did something that is impossible for flesh and blood to do when he fights with his fellow and overcomes him, throws him off the horse,
and here 'horse and its rider He threw into the sea.'"
And likewise in every verse Rashi explains the addition of the duplication),
One must say that according to Rashi's method, indeed "the entire song you will find duplicated,"
but the explanation in this is,
not merely a duplication for the beauty of the rhetoric but not necessarily that the duplication adds something
(as the commentators learn),
but according to his method, the duplication is only in the general matter,
i.e., a duplication in the same matter,
but the duplication adds something in that same matter itself –
more force,
an additional detail, and so forth,
as Rashi explains the addition of the duplication in every verse. That is to say:
In a regular verse in the Torah, it is not the way to write a duplicated phrase in order to add force and an additional detail in the matter,
however, in the Song of the Sea, it is the way of Scripture to write a duplicated phrase
(the entire song you will find duplicated),
not for the beauty of the rhetoric,
but in order to add through the duplication more force and additional details in that same matter itself,
[For example, as it says, "And as for the repetition of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it is because the matter is established from God, and God is hastening to do it,"
i.e., that the duplication of the dream adds more force –
swiftness –
in that same matter itself,
the dream].
Therefore, according to Rashi's method, it is compelled that when in the verse it says "the Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established" in addition to what it says before "a place for Your dwelling, You made, O Lord" –
it is indeed a duplication in the same matter,
but it must add another point
(in the matter of the Holy Temple)
that is not expressed in "a place for Your dwelling, etc."
So this compels Rashi to explain his explanation there,
that the duplication "the Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established" adds a force in the matter of the Holy Temple
(a place for Your dwelling)
itself,
that this speaks about "the Sanctuary which Your hands established, O Lord" –
a different Sanctuary than "a place for Your dwelling" –
and specifically this Holy Temple is "beloved" because it is built "with two hands,"
"and when will it be built with two hands? At the time when the Lord will reign forever and ever,
forever and ever, for all sovereignty is His,"
however, "a place for Your dwelling, etc." refers to the Sanctuary that existed before and was not built with two hands, etc.
And based on this, it is understood why Rashi must explain this interpretation even though it is a great wonder,
and different from all the commentators and our Sages of blessed memory explain –
because according to Rashi's method, the repetition must add something.
One must still understand, however:
According to Rashi that "the Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established" "when will it be built with two hands,
when the Lord will reign forever and ever,
in the future to come, etc.,"
and specifically the Holy Temple is "beloved" etc. –
it apparently follows that it is an emphasis on a distressing matter,
because with this one emphasizes that until the future to come they will not have a Temple in its perfection!
The song was indeed said while going out from Egypt on the way to the Land of Israel,
and Moses himself says earlier in the verse
(in the song)
"You will bring them and plant them on the mountain of Your inheritance,"
which speaks about the entry of the children of Israel into the Land of Israel,
a good and spacious land,
and there will be "the foundation of Your dwelling that You, Lord, have made,"
the Temple –
all of which are good matters;
וואס דאס זיינען אלץ ענינים טובים;
afterwards Moses comes and adds according to Rashi's method –
"the Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established,"
that "when will it be built" the Holy Temple which is "beloved" and built with two hands –
not now when you will enter the Land of Israel,
but specifically...
in the future to come,
but until then all these things,
the entry into the good and spacious land,
the building of the Temple –
are not in their perfection! –
a most distressing thing...
And particularly according to Rashi's words earlier on the verse "I will be that which I will be,"
that Moses said "Master of the Universe, why should I mention to them another trouble? They have enough with this trouble,
He said to him 'You have spoken well, etc.'" –
now why does Moses here in the song emphasize a distressing matter that what the Jews have is not in its perfection,
because they will apparently not have the "Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established" since that will be only in the future to come?!
The answer is –
simply
(as a five-year-old understands):
If the Jews had been worthy,
the future redemption would have come then when they went out of Egypt,
because had it not been for the sin of the spies, the Jews would have entered the Land of Israel in three days,
and then there would have immediately been the future redemption and the future Holy Temple. And since Moses
(at the time of the song)
did not know that there would be the sin of the spies and that the Jews would not be worthy etc.
[because if he had known he would not have mentioned a distressing matter,
as Moses said earlier "why should I mention to them a trouble"],
with "the Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established" Moses was emphasizing
(not, heaven forbid, a matter of deficiency,
but on the contrary –)
a matter of superiority,
that the Jews should know that if they would immediately then have the "Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established,"
a Temple in its perfection.
And based on the above, Rashi on "You will bring them" is also understood –
"Moses prophesied that he would not enter the land, therefore it does not say 'You will bring us,'"
and "even though the decree of the spies had not yet been decreed, nevertheless he prophesied and did not know what he prophesied":
If Moses had known what he prophesied he would not have said it,
because it is not fitting that he should mention here a distressing matter
(as Moses said earlier "why should I mention to them a trouble").
However, regarding "the Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established" it does not state in Rashi that "he did not know what he prophesied"
(that there would be a length of exile,
and only in the future to come there would be the "Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established") –
because one does not need to come to that,
since had they been worthy, the future redemption would have been then.
And may it be His will that since now "all the ends have passed and the matter depends only on repentance" –
immediately to repentance and immediately to redemption:
Jews immediately do repentance in one hour and in one day,
and even shorter –
in one moment,
consequently the true and complete redemption and the "Sanctuary of the Lord, Your hands established" come immediately in one moment,
"now,"
and one has the perfection of the people,
"with our young and with our old etc. with our sons and with our daughters,"
together with the perfection of the Torah,
together with the perfection of the land,
until in a manner of "the Lord your God will expand your border,"
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days literally,
"and eternal joy upon their heads."
It is also a custom to study a verse from the weekly portion together with Rashi's commentary,
and a matter in the notes of the father on the Zohar of our portion.
In our parshah, on the verse
(as was discussed in the maamar)
"And all the people saw the voices, etc." Rashi comments on "And all the people saw" and explains:
"It teaches that there was not among them one blind person,
and from where [do we know] that there was not among them a mute person? The verse states, 'And all the people answered,'
and from where [do we know] that there was not among them a deaf person? The verse states, 'We will do and we will hear.'"
Afterwards, it is noted as referring to the Mechilta,
but according to the simple understanding, the citation is not from Rashi,
which is why it is not found in the manuscripts and early printings of Rashi - as has been discussed many times that the subject of Rashi in his commentary on the Torah is the simple meaning of the verse,
and even when he brings a matter from the Midrash, it is not as a homiletical interpretation,
but rather because that is the simple meaning of the verse. And particularly in this Rashi, where he writes "it teaches, etc.,"
meaning, it is not that Rashi is giving an interpretation,
but rather the verse itself "teaches,"
it comes to teach thus and so,
from this it is understood that Rashi's commentary is the literal simple meaning of the verse.
On the other hand,
it is also worthwhile to examine the source of Rashi's commentary,
in this case - the Mechilta on the verse
(as is noted in the Rashi before us).
When one looks there, a question arises on Rashi:
In the Mechilta, he brings two additional types that are learned from verses that they were healed:
"And from where [do we know] that there were not among them lame people? It is stated, 'And they stood at the bottom of the mountain,'
and it teaches that there were not among them fools
[The Rebbe, may he live for many good years, laughed,
and said:
Even those whom the angel had proclaimed to be fools (as above, section 3) - they were changed at the giving of the Torah!]
as it is stated, 'You have been shown to know.'"
Thus the question on Rashi arises:
Since he brings three types that were healed at the giving of the Torah with proofs from verses - why does he not bring all the types that are in the Mechilta,
also the lame and the fools,
for which there are also proofs from verses?
One cannot say that he does not bring "fools" because the proof is from a later verse
(in the parshah of Va'etchanan),
because also the verse "We will do and we will hear" that Rashi brings
(as a proof "that there were not among them deaf people")
is from a later verse
(in the parshah of Mishpatim).
On the other hand - the proof in the Mechilta that "there were not among them lame people"
("And they stood, etc.")
is from an earlier verse - and nevertheless Rashi does not bring it!
Also, one must understand:
The proof that "there was not among them a mute person" is from an earlier verse - "And all the people answered." And it is known the rule in Rashi that he explains a commentary on the spot,
not waiting until later in the Torah - so why does Rashi not explain on the spot, at the verse "And all the people answered," that this teaches that there was not among them a mute person?
Along with several other precise points. And as will be explained further.
In the notes on the Zohar of our parshah, he comments on the statement of the Zohar: "And Yitro, the father-in-law of Moses, and his sons and his wife came to Moses, all of them were one unity,
and his sons, the sons of Yitro, for after Moses came to him, he had sons. And so it was with Jacob, that when he came to Laban and established his dwelling with him, he had sons,
so too here, Moses, when he established his dwelling with Yitro, Yitro had sons,
and all his household he brought with him to bring them under the wings of the Shechinah,"
meaning, to convert.
As it is also stated in the Midrash:
"Two men hosted two righteous men and were blessed on their account, and they did not have children initially, and from the time they entered their homes, the Holy One, blessed be He, gave them children - Laban and Yitro. Laban, perhaps he had a son,
and his daughter shepherded his flock
['If he had sons, how could his daughter shepherd?' because even among the nations of the world at that time, it was contrary to modesty for a girl to be a shepherd of flocks),
rather, he did not have sons,
from the time Jacob entered his home, he was blessed with property and with sons, etc.
Yitro, as it is written: 'And to the priest of Midian were seven daughters,'
perhaps he had sons,
and his daughters shepherded,
rather, he did not have them,
and from the time Moses entered his home, he was blessed and had sons, etc.'"
However, there is a difference between Laban and Yitro:
The influence of Moses on Yitro was to such an extent that Yitro converted
(as it is stated here in the Zohar).
This is not the case with Laban, who did not convert.
And all the more so, with a fortiori reasoning:
Since he said to Jacob, "The daughters are my daughters and the sons are my sons,"
that even Jacob's sons are Laban's,
all the more so,
that he did not allow his own sons to convert due to Jacob's influence.
In this note of his, the father explains the precise points and allusions in the Zohar according to Kabbalah. But not the lesson from it in the service of God,
which certainly there is in this a lesson,
and all the more so and a fortiori:
How much more so that from every thing in the world that a person sees or hears he must derive a lesson in the service of God,
all the more so from a matter in Torah. And as will be explained below.
Continuing from what was discussed above regarding the Tenth of Shevat and the Fifteenth of Shevat,
and the Shabbat following them when there is the "Vayechulu" of all these matters on these days - here is the place to mention another point in connection with the month of Shevat in general,
which was not mentioned about this, relying that one will remember what was spoken about in past years:
The month of Shevat has a special distinction from the rest of the months - as it is stated in the Written Torah that "In the eleventh month
(the month of Shevat)
on the first of the month, Moses began to explain this Torah,"
"In seventy languages he explained it to them."
And as it is also said "And you shall write all the words of this Torah very clearly,"
in seventy languages,
and it is known that "clearly" in its numerical value (hei, hei yud,
hei yud tet,
hei yud tet bet)
equals seventy. And this
(explaining this Torah continued throughout the entire month of Shevat and afterwards in the month of Adar until the seventh of Adar (when Moses our teacher passed away).
It follows that the month of Shevat is specially distinguished by the fact that the entire month is connected with "explaining this Torah,"
the translation of the Torah into seventy languages.
This was also partially in the month of Adar
(until the seventh of Adar),
but not the entire month,
and on the contrary - most of the month this was not the case
[And regarding a leap year (as in this year) - according to the opinion that the year of Moses' death was a leap year [and regarding this there is a discussion concerning the year of Moses' birth whether it was a leap year,
and according to the reasoning that it was not a leap year this corresponds to the time of the giving of the Torah,
as discussed previously] it is known the discussion whether Moses' death was in the first Adar or in the second Adar],
and according to the reasoning that it was in the first Adar,
it follows that only in part of the month of Adar was there "explaining").
However, the entire month of Shevat was "explaining this Torah." From this it is understood that this has a special connection specifically with the month of Shevat.
And one can say the connection in content between the matter of "explaining this Torah,"
"In seventy languages he explained it to them" with the month of Shevat:
The month of Shevat, its constellation is Yosef,
for we are of the seed of Yosef. And this is the special connection of this month with the master of the hillula of the month of Shevat - His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose name is Yosef. And the service of the master of the hillula was specifically in this matter of "Yosef" on the name "May God add for me another son,"
to make from the "other" a "son,"
the matter of "May your springs spread forth outward" in the most extensive manner.
And just as his main service regarding Israel was in the manner of "May God add for me another son" - so too was this his main service in relation to the world,
through that which he emphasized specifically to translate the springs of Torah,
the inner dimension of Torah into seventy languages - "explaining this Torah,
in seventy languages he explained it to them" - the special matter of the entire month of Shevat. Similar to and as an example of the destiny "For then I will turn to the peoples a clear language, to call all of them in the name of God, to serve Him with one accord,"
"And God will be King over all the earth."
And the reason for this that the master of the hillula was so engrossed in this:
Standing in the last time of exile,
immediately before the coming of our righteous Mashiach,
on the eve of Shabbat after midday,
there must be "Those who taste life merit,"
a taste from every dish and dish of the revelations of the future to come,
also from the matter "For then I will turn to the peoples a clear language, to call all of them in the name of God, to serve Him with one accord" and "And God will be King over all the earth" - one has a semblance and example of this through "explaining this Torah,"
"In seventy languages he explained it to them."
The lesson from this:
Standing still in the month of Shevat, each person in his place has special powers to fulfill his mission from the master of the hillula, especially in engaging in spreading the springs outward,
until the manner of "explaining this Torah,
in seventy languages he explained it to them."
And even though it is already after the Tenth of Shevat,
since we are still in the month of Shevat,
which the entire month is connected with "explain this Torah,"
the special service of the Baal HaHillula - if one has not done or has not completed in its fullness the fulfillment of this mission, one can still complete it,
until "complete" from the term completion,
until "double of wisdom,"
which does not mean only twice as much,
but incomparably more than that.
As is understood from the Midrash in Shemot Rabbah which brings this verse
("double of wisdom")
in connection with the addition of the second Tablets,
that then were added "laws of Midrash and Aggadot,"
which is more than twice as much. In addition to this, the addition is not only in quantity but also in quality. And especially when one speaks about a matter and intellect in Torah,
when it comes to even one logical argument, it adds understanding in all of one's previous knowledge,
as is seen in practice,
all the more so when "laws of Midrash and Aggadot etc." were added.
And in general it means:
to do - and in a manner of "double of wisdom" - in the dissemination of Judaism in general,
and in general - the commandments:
love of Israel and unity of Israel,
educating oneself and educating others,
Torah,
Tefillin,
Mezuzah,
charity,
a house full of books - Yavneh and its sages,
Kashrut etc.,
Shabbat candles,
family purity,
that each Jew should receive a letter in one of the general Torah scrolls,
and the nullification of the terrible decree of "Who is a Jew,"
in a manner that no trace remains of it because it is nullified from the outset,
so that conversion is only according to Halachah.
Which this - conversion according to Halachah - also has a connection with the effort that also non-Jews should fulfill the Seven Commandments of the Sons of Noah
(as per the ruling of the Rambam),
because the fulfillment of the Seven Commandments of the Sons of Noah is generally connected with the status of a Ger Toshav
(not a Ger Tzedek,
who is a Jew,
but a Ger Toshav),
"a partial conversion,"
through that he
(the non-Jew)
fulfills his role in the world - the fulfillment of the Seven Commandments of the Sons of Noah,
through which the settlement of the world is accomplished,
and this helps Jews to do their service.
Which this is in the example and likeness of "and kings shall be your caretakers and their queens your nursemaids,"
and "and strangers shall stand and shepherd your flocks,"
and as explained in Tractate Shabbat that "one who is careful with Tzitzit merits and is served by two thousand eight hundred servants,
as it is said, 'Thus says the Lord of Hosts: In those days, ten men from all the languages of the nations shall take hold, and they shall take hold of the corner of a Jewish man, saying, Let us go with you etc.,'"
"in reward for the corner, ten men from every language take hold of the corner; behold, seven hundred for seventy languages,
and he has four corners, behold two thousand eight hundred"
[the concept of "power,"
only as "power" stands in its completeness - "power" includes ten and ten of ten:
one hundred times twenty is two thousand,
and one hundred times eight is eight hundred].
Which this speaks of how non-Jews are on the level of "servants,"
a Ger Toshav
(not a Ger Tzedek),
that they are secondary to Jews and help Jews fulfill their service.
And similarly, a Jew must already do now in the last days of exile
(those who taste life merit)
- by exerting oneself that non-Jews should fulfill their Seven Commandments. And in general - the aforementioned service of "explain this Torah,"
"in seventy languages he explained it to them,"
as above.
And may it be His will that standing in a farbrengen,
and it is known the greatness of the matter in this,
that this accomplishes more than the angel Michael can accomplish,
and in addition this farbrengen is in a time of favor and in a place of favor,
a place where they increase Torah and where they increase prayer - may this give even more powers to accept good resolutions to do in all these aforementioned matters,
and in general Torah and commandments and the dissemination of Judaism and the spreading of the wellsprings outward.
And as much as one resolves to do now,
when another moment passes - one resolves to do even more.
And then one is certainly successful in this and one receives not only in the manner of "according to the pain is the reward,"
but in the manner of "I toiled and I found,"
in the manner of a find — incomparably greater than one's toil. And furthermore:
not only is one's reward incomparably greater than one's toil,
but also one's toil from the outset is incomparably higher than what one did until now — as is known the rule "one who has one hundred wants two hundred, one who has two hundred wants four hundred" — that thus the Almighty has implanted in human nature — consequently, when one already has two hundred,
one desires for oneself four hundred, etc.
א.וו.
Until one receives the greatest reward — the true and complete redemption,
through our righteous Mashiach.
Here is the place also to speak about the gathering in connection with the daughters of Israel that takes place on this Shabbat — and with an introduction:
It is known how much the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the leader, always insisted on order. And in connection with this gathering one sees why:
A program was printed in connection with the gathering with all the details and minutiae,
and in several pages etc. — but one thing is missing:
The date when the gathering takes place!
Since I received the pages through Divine Providence on the eve of this Shabbat,
on Thursday night,
it presumably has a connection with this Shabbat — Shabbat Parshat Yitro.
One sees the connection openly:
In Parshat Yitro it is written that as an introduction to the giving of the Torah the Almighty told Moses to precede the women to the men — "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob — these are the women,
(and then)
and tell the children of Israel" — these are the men.
From this it is understood that on this Shabbat it is a special time for success for the women and daughters of Israel in all their matters to fulfill their role,
and also a time of success for their husbands,
to whom they are a "helpmeet opposite him,"
and for their children,
for all Jews and for the entire world,
because upon the women and daughters of Israel in particular depends the existence of the entire world and all the people of the world,
as follows.
And in practical terms this means — that on this Shabbat in particular women and girls must take strength to fulfill their role,
all the matters that were specifically given over to them.
And in particular — the matter of "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it."
And as discussed many times — one must do this without calculations and limitations etc.,
"where will one take food to feed another child,"
and similar all these "claims" about this,
but one must rely on the calculations of the Almighty,
Who is "He who sustains the entire world with His goodness, with grace, with kindness, and with mercy,"
as every Jew says in the Grace After Meals to the Almighty,
which certainly one does not say "smoothly" so, Heaven forbid,
but one means what one says,
and consequently — there is no place to make a calculation of where one will take sustenance for another child,
because the Almighty sustains "the entire world with His goodness, with grace, with kindness, and with mercy." And He has done so for five thousand seven hundred and three hundred years,
and for yet several months — He will also sustain the newborn child,
a boy or a girl!
And on the contrary:
Through the fact that the Almighty "with His goodness, with grace, with kindness, and with mercy" will sustain the newborn child,
sustenance and the flow of blessings will come to all people in the entire world,
as is the nature of kindness,
that when one bestows kindness, this arouses a flow of kindness to all without exception.
As one sees this even in human nature:
When one's attribute of kindness shines within him, this arouses a flow of kindness to all around him,
and he is not particular to bestow kindness specifically to those in need of it,
and he does not make calculations of how much kindness to bestow,
but he bestows the kindness that he has to all,
and furthermore — he seeks recipients and vessels to whom he can bestow kindness.
All the more so that this is so regarding the attribute of kindness above,
from the Almighty,
that He bestows kindness to all,
not only to those in need of it,
and not in a limited measure,
but a flow of kindness without limitations. And He seeks out recipients and vessels to whom He can bestow kindness.
We see this with Abraham our father - that he was in the likeness of the attribute of kindness above
(Therefore the attribute of kindness said: all the days that Abraham was in the world, I did not need to do my work, for Abraham stood and served in my place)
- he bestowed kindness to everyone without limitations,
and he sought out recipients for this,
until even Arabs,
until the flow of kindness consisted of giving them food and drink which becomes blood and flesh like his own flesh from that Arab,
because from the perspective of the attribute of kindness, the influence is to everyone without limitations.
It follows,
that through the matter of "be fruitful and multiply" and bringing additional children into the world,
women perform the greatest kindness for the entire world
[in addition to that which the very thing itself is the best thing and the best blessing,
and through this comes a good to the entire Jewish people in particular,
because through this they establish "houses of priesthood and Levites and royalty etc." ]
- because through this they arouse the attribute of kindness above that the Almighty should bestow and sustain the new children,
and consequently He is already also bestowing kindness to everyone without limitations!
This is particularly relevant in our time - when the state of the world is in a manner of "darkness shall cover the earth and thick darkness the nations",
and the world shakes and trembles,
and surely it will not touch Jews, as long as they hold onto Torah and commandments,
"all your deeds shall be for the sake of Heaven" and "in all your ways know Him",
but in practice the state of the world is thus - in such a time the flow of kindness from the Almighty to the entire world and to all inhabitants of the world is particularly relevant.
Therefore now even more and even more strongly emphasized is the great benefit and kindness that women bring to the world - by bringing another child into the world,
and through this arousing the attribute of kindness above.
One sees the greatness in this:
Through that which a woman brings even one single child into the world - she brings a flow of kindness from the Almighty to everyone,
and He seeks out recipients and those influenced to whom to bestow kindness!
In addition to the general great benefit that women bring to the entire world - there is also the great benefit that they bring specifically to their husbands and to their own home:
The Gemara explains the matter that a woman is a "helper opposite him" to her husband
("I will make him a helper opposite him"):
"In what way does a woman help a man..
A man brings wheat - he chews wheat
(literally),
flax - he wears flax
(literally)
(But does a man eat wheat as it is and wear flax as it is?) No,
she enlightens his eyes and sets him on his feet."
All physical matters come because it is so in spirituality:
Why is a woman "enlightening his eyes and setting him on his feet" physically
(through that which she makes from the wheat bread to eat,
and from flax a garment to wear etc.)
- because it is so in spirituality:
The "helper opposite him",
the woman,
brings about peace in the home and a state of tranquility in the home,
so that the man can study Torah in tranquility without disturbances in his home.
And this is in the study hall - because "you shall know that your tent is at peace etc.",
he knows that he has a wife at home who "the wisdom of women builds her house",
and she ensures that there should be peace in the home and peace in your tent etc.
This matter is even more emphasized on the day of Shabbat - and from this there is a wonderful lesson:
The six weekdays and the day of Shabbat are in the likeness of bestower and recipient,
that is Zeir Anpin and Malchut,
husband and wife. And simply, the bestower is seemingly higher than the recipient, therefore he can bestow to him.
When one contemplates, however, the matter of Shabbat in relation to the weekdays,
and the words of the Zohar on this,
that from Shabbat all the days are blessed. And in the sefirot - that Binah,
"the mother of the children",
blesses Zeir Anpin,
and simply - that the service of the weekdays and the power of influence that they have to bestow to the recipient
(the coming Shabbat)
comes through the power and through the drawing of blessing from Shabbat - it turns out that the woman
(in the likeness of Shabbat,
Malchut),
the recipient,
bestows blessing and flow to the husband
(in the likeness of the weekdays,
Zeir Anpin),
ז"א),
the bestower!
From this is understood simply the lesson for Jewish women - the greatness of the responsibility that lies upon them to fulfill their great mission and role.
And this is also regarding Jewish women who prepare themselves to get married and establish their own homes in Israel and have their own children and be "the mother of the children is joyful" - this itself
(that they prepare themselves for this)
is the beginning of the matter.
And all the more so and certainly from "a good thought the Holy One, blessed be He, joins to action",
as is known the explanation of this, that when one has a good thought, the Most High provides the vessels,
"and He will sustain you",
so that the thought should come down into actual deed. But in actuality, the deed is the deed of man
(not the deed of the Holy One, blessed be He),
because the intention is that he should perform his service in actual deed,
only in this there are both advantages:
the deed of man below,
and together with this the power from above that provided the vessels.
All the more so regarding Jewish women, who not only have the good thought to establish their own homes,
but they already receive in actual deed the education for this - this is certainly more than "joins to action".
Consequently, Jewish women must also know and prepare themselves for the great mission that has been given to them - to engage both in their homes,
for their families and children,
and also for the entire world,
as mentioned above.
Based on the above - that Jews must engage in the entire world - one can also understand, possibly, the instruction from the Zohar of our portion, and particularly according to what is explained in the note of my father on this:
Since we are close to the coming of our righteous Mashiach,
the eve of Shabbat after midday,
there must be the "those who taste life merit" of all the matters mentioned above.
And moreover - we must do all that is dependent on us to hasten the redemption - by engaging through our deeds and our service as much as we can as preparation for the redemption.
Therefore, now there is even more emphasis
(in addition to the emphasis in general)
that a person should engage in the entire world,
also with the nations of the world - from the aspect of "those who taste life merit" and as preparation for the state mentioned above when it will be "for then I will turn to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord",
"and the kingdom shall be the Lord's" etc.
And as has been spoken many times at length.
And as is also emphasized regarding Yaakov - that he effected that in Lavan's house there should be children
(as related in the Zohar)
- that he said to Esav "until I come to my lord, to Seir",
which will ultimately be "in the days of Mashiach, as it is said, 'And saviors shall come up on Mount Zion to judge the mount of Esav, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's'". One sees that ultimately there must and will be the clarification of the world and the clarification of the nations.
Among the nations of the world themselves, there are levels,
and correspondingly there are levels in the clarification of the nations and the clarification of the world. And in general, three levels:
(a) The level of "strangers":
They remain gentiles in their simple sense,
and they are strangers and have no direct connection with Jews. The clarification among them must be only in the manner of "and strangers shall stand and shepherd your flocks",
but even afterwards they remain "strangers".
(b) A higher level - those who are on the level of a resident alien,
which is already "a partial conversion"
(as mentioned in the section)
- whose clarification is in a manner that one effects upon them that they should fulfill the seven commandments of the children of Noah.
(c) The highest level in clarification - a righteous convert,
which is conversion according to law,
that one transforms the gentile into a Jew.
An example of this is the matter of "many from the peoples of the land became Jews
(converted)
for the fear of the Jews fell upon them",
according to the interpretation of the Rema that "the fear of the Jews" is the fear of the Lord,
meaning that the fear of the Lord that came from Mordechai and the Jews fell upon them).
And it can be said that in general these are the two levels of clarification of Lavan and of Yitro discussed in the Zohar
(and in the note on this):
Lavan was before the giving of the Torah,
when at that time it was applicable to clarify him only in the manner of "and strangers shall stand and shepherd your flocks",
but not that he should become a convert. Therefore, Yaakov's action and influence upon him was only a clarification in such a manner,
but not that he and his sons converted.
However, Yitro came to Moshe after the giving of the Torah - when at the giving of the Torah there were all
(the souls)
that were destined to be created
(as explained in Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer)
also the souls of converts - therefore Moshe was able to clarify him in the highest manner that he should convert
(a righteous convert).
The lesson from this:
Standing very close to the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu, one must do especially in the clarification of the nations and the clarification of the world,
in all the aforementioned manners,
according to the level of the nations:
Those who are related to becoming a convert - because their souls were at the Giving of the Torah - one must convert them. From where does one know who they are? There are the aspects according to Halacha of how one converts a convert,
he must go through all the aspects,
one must inform him "some of the light commandments and some of the severe commandments" with the rest of the aspects in this,
and then one knows that he is related to converting himself,
because he is a convert who converted,
since his soul was at the Giving of the Torah.
The gentiles who are not related to this clarification - one must speak with them about fulfilling their seven commandments of the children of Noah with all their branches and details,
as the explicit ruling in the Rambam:
"Moshe Rabbeinu commanded from the mouth of the Almighty to compel all the inhabitants of the world to accept the commandments that the children of Noah were commanded."
And as discussed many times,
that now there is the full possibility to do this
(not as in previous generations),
and especially in this country where several of the seven commandments etc. are engraved in the laws of the country.
And now there is a situation that when one will do it in a manner of "to compel" in pleasant ways and in ways of peace,
and tell the non-Jew that he must fulfill them not
(only)
for the settlement of the world but "because the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded them in the Torah and made them known to us through Moshe Rabbeinu",
because the Almighty Himself commanded him
(through Moshe Rabbeinu)
- one will certainly effect upon him:
The spark of Moshe that is in every Jew must only approach the gentile and speak with him in a manner of "to compel" in pleasant ways and in ways of peace - that he should know that the Almighty thinks especially about him
(the gentile)
where he is located,
and wants
(as the Almighty commanded)
that he should fulfill the seven commandments with their branches and details,
matters that the gentile himself understands - "Do not steal",
"Do not covet",
all the more so "Do not murder",
and faith in G-d
[about which also gentiles are commanded. However, regarding partnership there is a dispute whether the children of Noah were commanded],
and about this honoring father and mother,
which is a rational commandment,
and so forth,
and tell the gentile that he must fulfill it because the Almighty Himself commanded him
(through Moshe Rabbeinu) -
It is certain that with such an approach it will be accepted by the gentile and one will effect upon him. And he will even thank for it,
and consequently there will also come from this a benefit for Jews
(as discussed many times).
Regarding receiving weapons from the nations of the world, to our sorrow one does not always receive this. And this is not the place to speak about a distressing matter. But regarding effecting upon gentiles that they should accept upon themselves the seven commandments and all their branches - one can effect this,
as has been seen in practice.
Parenthetical remark:
In contrast to this, there is another conduct, G-d forbid - those who want to bribe a gentile so that he should help one Jew against another Jew, G-d forbid!...
Which will certainly not be accepted by the gentile - because he himself knows what is written in the Torah
(only he knows it in English)
"And I will bless those who bless you" and also the end of the verse. Consequently, such conduct will not be accepted by the gentile,
and if one then has troubles,
the gentile will say that one brought it upon oneself because one wanted to touch another Jew...
And in addition, one even uses Torah to do such things,
that according to Torah, as it were, one must touch another Jew,
and threaten that one will inform on him etc. - when in the Torah it is written that "all Jews are presumed to be of kosher lineage",
and even if he sinned - "even though he sinned, he is a Jew"
[Israel is an acronym for "there are six hundred thousand letters to the Torah"].
They use Torah not for its own sake. Which is the most degraded thing - this is like the well-known parable that I do not want to mention - "one who grabs the head of the king etc."...
After the parenthetical remark - in our time especially is a time conducive to speak with gentiles about their seven commandments and when one speaks in a suitable manner - it will be accepted by them. And from this specifically there will also come a benefit for Jews
(as above).
And may it be His will that through the service of refining the nations, there will be, even during the time of exile, the fulfillment of "And kings shall be your attendants and their queens your nursemaids,"
as the incident in tractate Zevachim.
And this prepares further the world for the fulfillment of the prophecy "For then I will turn to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord,"
"And the kingdom shall be the Lord's,"
in the true and complete redemption.
And all this — immediately and forthwith,
in a single moment,
as discussed numerous times — one takes hold and finds oneself together with our righteous Mashiach in our holy land,
"a land which the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year,"
and there specifically in Jerusalem, the holy city,
"the city of the great King,"
may it be built and established speedily in our days, Amen.
And in the future, Jerusalem will spread out over all the land of Israel,
and there specifically — to the Temple Mount,
and into "the Sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established,"
when "the Lord shall reign forever and ever."
Speedily, in our actual days.
The explanation in Rashi's commentary — in brief:
When one learns the verse "And all the people answered together," there is no necessity that from "And all the people answered" it is proven that "there was not among them a mute" — because in the preceding verse it is stated "And Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words,"
consequently, one could say that the verse then states "And all the people answered"
(not in order to say that "there was not among them a mute,"
but rather to teach another thing —)
in order to negate that here it is no longer speaking only about the elders of the people but about all the people. But not that "all the people" intends to innovate that literally everyone answered because the giving of the Torah caused that "there was not among them a mute."
However, when one comes to the verse "And all the people saw the sounds," there is no other thing that "all" comes to teach,
except for the matter that "it teaches that there was not among them a single blind person."
And since here Rashi already has a necessity from the plain meaning of Scripture that the verse "teaches" that there was a miracle that the giving of the Torah effected a correction also in the physical body of the Jewish people
(that there was not among them a single blind person),
one can already also learn simply that from what it says earlier "And all the people answered," one learns that "there was not among them a mute."
And likewise, from what it says further "We will do and we will hear," one learns that "there was not among them a deaf person."
Regarding, however, the other two matters that are stated in the Mechilta, that "there was not among them lame people, as it is said 'and they stood at the foot of the mountain'" and "there was not among them fools, as it is said 'You have been shown to know'" — according to the plain meaning, there is no necessity from these verses that it was so:
Regarding lame people, "and they stood" is possible with firmness,
in this there is no difference between lame people and others,
because even a lame person can stand firmly;
ווייל אויך א חיגר קען שטיין בתוקף;
the difference between them is only regarding walking,
so if it had stated walking regarding "all the people," from this there would have been a necessity that there were no lame people,
but from "and they stood at the foot of the mountain" there is no necessity.
Similarly, from "You have been shown to know" there is no necessity according to the plain meaning that "there was not among them fools" — because "to know" is applicable
(according to the plain meaning)
also to the greatest fool,
for the greatest fool saw at that time the splitting of the Red Sea and all the miracles just as the greatest sage saw them,
consequently, "to know" was applicable to him.
This is, however, all according to the plain meaning
(that there is no necessity that "there was not among them fools"),
but according to the halachah
(the method of study of the Mechilta)
— how a Jew must conduct himself in practice,
and also Rashi himself says that "I have come only for the plain meaning of Scripture,"
meaning that regarding practical halachah, how a Jew must conduct himself, he must look in the halachah
(not in Rashi's commentary)
— in the halachah
(Mechilta)
it is stated that "there was not among them fools,"
meaning that one must strive not to be a fool,
but rather a wise person!
And at the time of "a wise person's heart is to his right," one then also transforms "a fool's heart is to his left,"
until in a manner of transformation,
as the Baal Shem Tov interprets "Turn away from evil and do good" — "meaning that he should make from evil good,"
"with all your heart — with both your inclinations,"
Until one effects thus not only regarding the "fool's heart" in itself, but also in the world — among the nations of the world,
that one prepares the world for the state of "And the kingdom shall be the Lord's,"
that in the entire world, Divinity is revealed,
In the true and complete redemption,
speedily, in our actual days.
His Holiness, our Master, our Teacher, and our Rebbe, may he live for many good years, Amen, began to sing "Niet niet nikavo."
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
