English translation 1
First of all, this farbrengen is connected with Yud Shevat,
First of all, this farbrengen is connected with Yud Shevat,
the day of the histalkus and hillula of the Rebbe, my father-in-law,
the one who fills the place of the nesius before him until the Alter Rebbe,
the founder of Chabad Chassidus and the first of the nesius of Chabad.
And as has been discussed many times, since he is called by Torah the name "Memaleh Makom",
he certainly fills the entire place of the one before him
(until the Alter Rebbe).
And on the contrary –
in the manner of "maalin bakodesh"1,
"keflayim letushiyah"2.
And all the more so and certainly:
Since regarding every Jew it is said "maalin bakodesh",
how much more so regarding a nasi b'Yisrael,
from whom they shall see and so shall do,
and in the language of the Rambam3 –
he is "the heart of the entire congregation of Israel",
and the heart reaches to all limbs4,
meaning that from the nasi emanates to all limbs
[and as was discussed at the farbrengen before this5 in connection with the wording of the prayer "v'tza'etza'einu"),
it is certain that he is not only the one who fills the place of those before him,
but in the manner of maalin bakodesh. Because since a dwarf on top of a giant sees further
(and has greater powers)
than the giant6,
how much more so a giant on top of a giant.
The content of Chabad Chassidus –
which the Alter Rebbe founded,
and the Baal HaHillula fills the entire place
(in the true essence of the matters),
and in the manner of maalin bakodesh,
from the nesius of Chabad before him,
until the Alter Rebbe –
one can begin to understand through the Torah of Chabad Chassidus,
because all matters begin from Torah,
as the saying7 "He looked into the Torah and created the world." And in the Torah itself –
from the Written Torah,
as the Rambam writes in the introduction and beginning of his book HaYad, that the Torah was given with its explanation,
where "Torah" refers to the Written Torah,
and "its explanation" refers to the Oral Torah.
Meaning that first and foremost comes the Written Torah.
This means in our context,
that the content of Chabad Chassidus
(and the nesius of Chabad,
until the Baal HaHillula)
is expressed in the Written Torah of Chassidus –
in the book of Tanya8.
[And particularly when we are just before "the king Moshiach stands",
who comes when "your wellsprings spread forth outward"9,
the wellsprings of the inner dimension of Torah that emerge in the manner of "yisparnun minei" *9 through Chabad Chassidus].
And especially it has a connection to the book of Tanya which was printed close in time to Yud Shevat,
and in addition –
Yud Shevat of this year
(the day of hillula of the Rebbe, my father-in-law,
the one who fills the place of the nesius of Chabad before him until the Alter Rebbe),
is a time that causes matters of Chabad Chassidus.
And in addition to this,
the Tanya was printed in a special place connected with the Baal HaHillula –
for place also causes
(as is explained also in the revealed dimension of Torah) –
in "Crown Heights",
near the beis medrash and shul of the Baal HaHillula,
where he lived for ten consecutive years
(and known is the superiority in several matters also in halacha)
of ten years).
It follows that this is a Tanya that is both connected with time that causes and with place that causes matters of Chabad Chassidus,
and it is known that time and place are connected with each other10.
Therefore it is an appropriate thing that we should begin the farbrengen with learning a matter in this Tanya11.
And in addition to this, we must also derive a lesson from the name of the neighborhood
(for place causes)
where the Tanya was printed
(where the Baal HaHillula lived for ten years) –
"Crown Heights",
even though it is a name given to this neighborhood by non-Jews,
nevertheless everything is with hashgacha pratis,
and since the name of this neighborhood came to a Jew, he must learn from it the primary purpose of his creation –
"I was created to serve my Maker"12,
a lesson in ahavas Hashem and yiras Hashem
(as will be discussed later page 16 and onward).
The concept that place causes [an effect] in connection with matters of Torah –
is understood from the saying of our Sages, of blessed memory13 "There is no Torah like the Torah of Eretz Yisrael." It is known the difference between the Torah scholars in Eretz Yisrael and in Bavel,
as per the saying of our Sages, of blessed memory14 "No'am – these are the Torah scholars in Eretz Yisrael who sweeten [the law] for one another in halachah,
Chavallim – these are the Torah scholars in Bavel who harm one another in halachah,"
"Torah scholars in Eretz Yisrael
are gentle with one another in halachah, etc. Torah scholars in Bavel
are bitter with one another in halachah." As explained in many places15 the difference in study between the Babylonian Talmud and the Jerusalem Talmud
(the Torah of Eretz Yisrael),
that in the Bavli there is an abundance of dispute and give-and-take and pilpul,
"He has made me dwell in darkness16 – this is the Talmud of Bavel"14,
but not so in the Yerushalmi
[to the extent that Rabbi Zeira fasted one hundred fasts when he went over from the (Talmud of) Bavel to the (Talmud of) Yerushalmi ("Rabbi Zeira, when he ascended to Eretz Yisrael, sat one hundred fasts so that the Babylonian Gemara should be forgotten from him"17)].
One sees from this how place causes [an effect] regarding Torah.
On the other hand –
"There is no Torah like the Torah of Eretz Yisrael" etc. does not, Heaven forbid, detract at all from the Babylonian Talmud,
and on the contrary –
the halachah is specifically like the Babylonian Talmud18. Because the broad explanation of "There is no Torah like the Torah of Eretz Yisrael" is
(not that this is connected to a limited place in the world,
Eretz Yisrael, but rather)
that the study is in a manner of Eretz Yisrael,
i.e., in a manner of "they sweeten [the law] for one another in halachah, etc. they are gentle with one another in halachah,"
without dispute.
Consequently, also in Bavel, in the Babylonian Talmud
[not looking at the difference between the Babylonian Talmud and the Jerusalem Talmud] –
the study can and must be
(not in a manner of "they harm one another in halachah, etc. they are bitter with one another in halachah," but rather)
"like the Torah of Eretz Yisrael,"
like a study of Eretz Yisrael
(the study of the Jerusalem Talmud),
"they sweeten [the law] for one another in halachah, etc."
Regarding the well-known saying of the Tzemach Tzedek19 "Make here Eretz Yisrael,"
i.e., in every place in the diaspora a person must make there Eretz Yisrael,
Eretz [Yisrael] on account of [the explanation] "that desired to do the will of her Master"20.
Regarding this in the study of Torah:
In every place
(also in the diaspora, Bavel)
the study of Torah must be in a manner of Eretz Yisrael,
that "they are gentle with one another."
As per the saying of our Sages, of blessed memory21 "A teacher and his student who engage in Torah in one gate become enemies of one another
(because they press one another and one does not accept the words of the other22)
and they do not move from there until they become lovers of one another, as it is said23 'And Vahev in Sufah,'
do not read 'in Sufah' but rather 'in Sofah'
(thus he expounds it: the book of wars. A war that is through a book,
love is at its end22)."
And the explanation of this is not that at the beginning of the study there must indeed truly be dispute and "they harm one another in halachah, etc." and at the end is "And Vahev in Sufah,"
"they become lovers" –
rather, also at the beginning of the study the intention of the students is not dispute,
but peace,
and therefore it is heard that "they are gentle with one another,"
"the words of the wise are heard in gentleness"24,
because the intention of the study of the entire Torah is in order to bring about peace –
"the entire Torah was given in order to make peace in the world"25,
beginning from peace within oneself and afterwards peace in one's portion in the world until the entire world. And therefore it is necessary that the study of Torah be in a manner of "they are gentle with one another." Only because in order to arrive at a proper conclusion there must be give-and-take and pilpul –
therefore the beginning of the study is in a manner of give-and-take and pilpul and dispute for the sake of Heaven, and
(only)
externally it appears as if "they become enemies." And at the end of the study the truth is revealed –
"And Vahev in Sufah,"
"they become lovers."
And it is understood simply that the intention in "He has made me dwell in darkness – this is the Talmud of Bavel" is not that one should, Heaven forbid, remain in settlement
("He has made me dwell")
in "darkness,"
in the darkness of exile. As others wish to claim, may the Merciful One protect us,
that exile and darkness are good,
and regarding this "darkness" in the study of Torah,
dispute and give-and-take and difficulties in Torah. Rather, the intention is only that the darkness should bring to the greatest light,
i.e., that the give-and-take and pilpul and dispute in Torah should bring a conclusion and halachah properly,
and at its end should be "love,"
consequently the "in darkness" must be only as much as is needed in order to bring "And Vahev in Sufah,"
the matter of love.
It follows that also in the Babylonian Talmud there is the concept of "Torah of the Land of Israel",
because we learn it in a manner of "agreeing with one another". And during the study of Torah in Babylonia it is in the manner of studying the Jerusalem Talmud
(in the Land of Israel)
and the Babylonian Talmud comes after the study of the Jerusalem Talmud –
then in the Babylonian Talmud as well there is the advantage of "Torah of the Land of Israel". And therefore one also arrives in the Babylonian Talmud at a conclusion and halachah
(after the give-and-take and dispute etc.).
That is, then one has both advantages:
the advantage of the Babylonian Talmud,
by virtue of the give-and-take and pilpul etc.,
and the halachah specifically in accordance with it,
and together with this one has within the Babylonian Talmud itself the advantage of "there is no Torah like the Torah of the Land of Israel",
because the study of the Babylonian Talmud is "like the Torah of the Land of Israel".
From this there is a directive how a Jew must study Torah –
in a manner of "agreeing with one another",
and "the words of the wise are heard with pleasantness",
and not, heaven forbid, like others conduct themselves, may G-d protect us,
in a manner that brings about dispute and the opposite of love of Israel,
the utter opposite of the entire matter of the Torah which was given to make peace in the world!
And they go around and claim that "it is permitted for a person to alter for the sake of peace"26 –
when in truth their very conduct is the opposite of peace,
and even more:
it is permitted to lie for the sake of peace26 –
when their entire conduct is the opposite of peace!
And when one uses Torah for the opposite of peace it becomes, may G-d protect us, the opposite of an "elixir of life"27! One takes, may G-d protect us, the Torah and instead of using it for an "elixir of life" –
to enliven Jews and the entire surroundings,
one takes the Torah and uses it for the opposite of an "elixir of life"...
The Torah says that "immediately adjacent to Torah scholars is blessing"28,
and "the words of the wise are heard with pleasantness"
(as above),
so it is understood that a Torah scholar is specifically one who conducts himself with love of Israel;
איז פארשטאנדיק אז א תלמיד חכם איז דוקא דער וואס פירט זיך מיט אהבת ישראל;
and if through his Torah the opposite of blessing and the opposite of "heard with pleasantness" emerges –
he is not a Torah scholar! And here one means a wise person in true wisdom –
the wisdom of the Torah,
which was given by the Most High, who is by nature good and whose nature is to do good29.
In addition to what is stated in the Written Torah –
which even the Sadducees admit to30,
all the more so Jews –
"And I will bless those who bless you" and the opposite of this...31
Therefore it is necessary in general,
and particularly in the study of Torah –
that there be peace,
and not, heaven forbid, dispute and the opposite of love.
Since it is Shabbat,
it is not a time to distress Jews with distressing matters and matters of war,
but rather there must be peace and rest.
Except one continues
(on Shabbat)
a war that began before Shabbat32,
or a war of mitzvah,
where the opposing side oppresses the cities of Israel,
he constricts Judaism and consequently Jews. The Torah then says that this is a war of mitzvah to fight against the oppressor –
for such a war one must go out even on Shabbat33.
But the going out to war is in a manner of "when you go out to war against your enemies"34,
the going out from the outset is in a manner that he stands above –
"against your enemies",
and "Hashem your G-d will give them into your hand"34,
in a manner of giving, for all who give give with a generous eye35,
and this comes specifically from "Hashem your G-d",
not "by my power and the might of my hand"36,
even one who has strong powers,
it is not by virtue of his powers,
but rather "Hashem your G-d will give them into your hand".
And regarding our matter:
The dispute and the opposite of "elixir of life" of those who use Torah for the opposite of peace –
will certainly not harm any Jew. Neither him nor his household,
all the more so those who hold onto the "cleat" of the Alter Rebbe,
who explains at length in chapter 32 of Tanya the greatness of the matter of peace and love of Israel. And no impression will remain of dispute and war etc.
On the contrary:
The only impression that will remain from it will be the "so shall they multiply and so shall they spread out" that comes about through "as much as they afflicted him"37.
And also the Jews whose evil inclination overpowered them and they stumbled with this conduct –
there is the promise that "no outcast shall be cast out from Him"38,
they will ultimately repent.
Those who already repented yesterday –
fortunate is their lot. Those who repented today –
fortunate is their lot. And all others will certainly repent,
and will also influence their students,
whom they educated in this path,
that they should repent etc.
And along with this, there is also the instruction from the Alter Rebbe in his Tanya:
If one might think that it is a difficult service for him to do teshuvah regarding a conduct of his to which he has become accustomed, the Alter Rebbe brings in the title page of the Tanya the explicit verse in the Torah39 "For this matter is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it,"
and he says that his book Likkutei Amarim is founded on this verse,
"to explain well how it is very near, in a long way and a short way, with the help of the Holy One, blessed be He."
So that one should not think that the service of teshuvah
(and the other services)
is difficult for him to perform,
because "this matter is very near to you." Even if he was born under the constellation of Mars, whose nature is the opposite of mercy
(as the Gemara says in Tractate Shabbos40),
and his habit has become an improper conduct,
and habit becomes a second nature41,
until, according to the second version42, habit becomes nature –
even in such a case, the service of teshuvah and Torah and mitzvos in general is also for him "very near to you..."
very."
And "this matter is very near to you" –
"in your mouth and in your heart, to do it":
His teshuvah must come forth in speech
("in your mouth"),
he must verbally confess with a full mouth regarding what he has done and do teshuvah upon it. And not only confess "in your mouth" externally,
because he was forced,
but also "in your heart" –
with his whole heart,
and "your heart" with two beis letters. And "to do it" –
even if the doing of teshuvah regarding that conduct is against his nature,
because habit becomes nature
(second) –
he forces himself, "do"
(to do it)
from the term coercion43
[which is the meaning of the term "do" (in the language of creation or formation) –
from the term coercion].
And even if he thinks that this is a "long way",
he is told that if he enters into this way,
it will be a "short way". And additionally, "with the help of the Holy One, blessed be He":
He has help and assistance from Above. And this is written even by the Alter Rebbe –
even though he was a new soul44,
he certainly had all the powers, etc. –
nevertheless, he writes "with the help of the Holy One, blessed be He",
that one must have help and assistance from Above.
All the more so, other Jews need and actually have the help of Hashem in their service.
And afterwards –
at the beginning of the body of the Tanya –
the Alter Rebbe adds further "they administer an oath to him: be righteous and do not be, etc.":
Even before he is born, a Jew is already administered an oath,
"administer an oath" from the term satiety –
they satiate him with all the powers,
powers that are drawn from His very Essence,
as explained by the Tzemach Tzedek regarding this matter45. Consequently, he certainly has powers throughout his entire life to perform his service,
including the service of teshuvah.
After the parenthetical remark –
since now a Tanya has been printed at a propitious time
(in proximity to Yud Shevat)
and in a propitious place
(in this neighborhood) –
it is fitting now to begin learning a topic in this Tanya.
Which topic in the Tanya should one learn? Since we are standing on the day of the hillula,
it is simple that it is fitting to learn in the Tanya where the Alter Rebbe speaks about the histalkus and hillula of a tzaddik –
Chapter 27 and Chapter 28 in Igeres HaKodesh

Igeres HaKodesh Chapter 27, the Alter Rebbe begins with:
"My beloved."
In this, the matter of ahavas Yisrael is emphasized. And with this he begins,
because ahavas Yisrael
("and you shall love your fellow as yourself"46)
is the most essential and all-inclusive matter in the Torah,
and not merely a general principle of the Torah,
but "a great principle in the Torah"47. Furthermore:
"This is the entire Torah, and the rest is its explanation"48.
That is, all parts of the Torah are an explanation of ahavas Yisrael. As explained in Tanya, chapter 32.
In ahavas Yisrael itself, there are levels. The Alter Rebbe continues:
"My beloved, my brothers and my friends, who are like my soul, etc.",
that this love is not merely like towards a stranger,
but love for "my brothers and my friends, who are like my soul",
and "etc." which includes all the other levels in this.
He continues:
"Hashem shall grant them life until eternity, and their descendants with them."
And according to what was explained in a previous farbrengen5 that "our descendants" includes all descendants until the end of all generations,
as is the ruling of the Alter Rebbe in Shulchan Aruch49 and in his Siddur –
it is understood that also "and their descendants with them" includes all descendants until the end of all generations.
And "and their descendants with them" adds a further novelty in this:
Although "their descendants" includes until the end of all generations,
one might have said that the descendants are not together and are on a different
(lower)
level than the first generation –
"and their descendants with them" emphasizes that "their descendants" will be "with them",
together and on the same level as they
(the patriarchs)
themselves.
And it can be said that "and their descendants with them" comes in continuation of what was written before, "My beloved ones, my brothers and my friends, etc.":
When there is the matter of Ahavas Yisrael,
they have the blessing that "Hashem shall grant them life until eternity, and their descendants with them",
that their descendants until the end of all generations will be "with them"
(with the first generation).
Afterwards, the Alter Rebbe continues writing about the reason for his letter
(consoling mourners on the passing of a tzaddik):
"I came to speak to the heart of the crushed, who sigh and groan, and to comfort them doubly for their strength."
And it can be said that with this the Alter Rebbe explains to them two things:
That there must be grief over the passing;
אז עס דארף זיין צער על ההסתלקות;
And together with this, one must know that "this brings 'double for strength'". For, seemingly, how does it happen that a tzaddik and great one in the revealed part of Torah and a tzaddik and great one in the inner dimension of Torah should pass away? This is so that there should be "double for strength".
The expression of the verse2 "double for strength" appears in the Midrash50 regarding Torah –
for every matter begins from Torah –
the Tablets:
The Midrash relates that "Moshe began to grieve over the breaking of the Tablets,
and the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: Do not grieve over the first Tablets, which contained only the Ten Commandments, for in the second Tablets I will give you that they will contain
halachos, midrashim, and aggados,
as it is said2 'He will declare to you the secrets of wisdom, for they are double for strength.'" From this, incidentally, it is understood that "double for strength" does not necessarily mean only twice as much,
but it can mean many times more.
One must understand:
Moshe himself should have grasped that which the Almighty later told him, that in the second Tablets there would be the advantage of "double for strength" –
why was there grief within him, and the Almighty had to reveal it to him and thereby comfort him?
Even if Moshe did not grasp this,
why does the Midrash need to relate a deficiency of Moshe and say that he grieved? Could it not have stated immediately that even though there was the breaking of the first Tablets,
the second Tablets had "double for strength"?
From this very point it is understood,
that a part of the lesson and instruction from this Midrash is –
that the breaking of the Tablets must bring about grief.
That is, even though the result of this is "double for strength",
nevertheless, the very reality of the breaking of the Tablets must bring about grief.
And so in our case
(regarding the letter):
The passing of the tzaddik must bring about grief.
And all the more so:
If even over the passing of every Jew it is said that it is comparable to a Torah scroll that was burned51,
how much more so a tzaddik.
But one says that from this comes "double for strength" –
does the Almighty not have many ways,
and He could have brought "double for strength" without the passing. And even if you say that this is the only way for this –
does it diminish the grief over a Torah scroll that was burned when one knows that one will have another two,
three,
four, and more Torah scrolls?!
All the more so when speaking of the passing of the tzaddik,
that although there will be "double for strength",
and the tzaddik receives reward above, etc. –
one nevertheless wants and needs to have the tzaddik below in this world, soul in body,
consequently, one has grief when he is taken up above.
[And so regarding the general matter of exile:
Even though a descent is for the purpose of an ascent,
one must grieve over the exile,
and not, Heaven forbid, be satisfied with it and claim that it is good for him in exile, Heaven forbid].
On the other hand –
he must not fall into despair due to the grief of the passing,
because through this comes "double for strength".
And on the contrary:
Through the grief over this comes "double for strength".
And this is to be connected with the sign of the letter –
"Zach"
"ז"ך"
(as set forth by the sons of the gaon the author):
"Zach" contains within itself a thing and its opposite:
It is not possible to say "zach" except regarding a matter that is in the category
(and was previously)
the opposite of purity. On the other hand, one says that now it is a pure thing.
Regarding "shemen zayit zach katit lama'or"52:
"Shemen zayit zach" emphasizes that it is possible that the olive oil be mixed with sediment
(from the olive),
one says that it must be
(not merely "shemen zayit", but)
"shemen zayit zach". As is known53 that within oils themselves there are several levels of purity,
from a third of a third until the first of the first, etc.
And through having "shemen zayit zach" one can use it "lama'or" –
in the Menorah to illuminate the surroundings.
It follows that "zach" emphasizes regarding the matter of "the advantage of light from darkness"54:
One takes olive oil that can be mixed with opposite matters
(sediment, etc.),
and one makes it pure,
and from this one can use it "lama'or", light,
and not merely the advantage of light,
but light.
One sees that in "zach" the subject of the letter's sign "Zach" is emphasized:
That from the passing of the tzaddikim
(a descent)
becomes "double for wisdom". The advantage of light from darkness.
After the sign Zach comes the sign Koach where the Alter Rebbe continues to speak about the passing of the tzaddik. And here he adds
(among other things)
further emphasis on the quality of the advantage of light from darkness that comes about through the passing of the tzaddik:
He explains in the letter
(based on the words of our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing55)
the connection and proximity of the passing of tzaddikim with the Red Heifer,
"Just as the heifer atones"
(and at the end of the letter he brings the version and in the Yalkut on Parshat Shemini –
"mei chatat")
so too does the death of tzaddikim atone:
Just as the Red Heifer
(mei chatat)
atones and effects purification from the father of fathers of impurity
(which is "lowest below nogah",
unlike the offering of sacrifices upon the altar which only refines the 70 nations),
darkness is transformed into light,
so too through the passing of tzaddikim there is atonement and darkness is transformed into light,
even from intentional sins, etc.
One sees in this letter further emphasis on the advantage of light from darkness that is brought about through the passing of the tzaddik,
in the manner of the elevation that comes through the Red Heifer,
mei chatat.
And the greatness of the elevation of the Red Heifer and mei chatat is known –
as the words of the Mishnah56 that there are five levels –
Chullin,
Ma'aser,
Terumah,
Kodesh,
and Chatat is the fifth level,
the highest level
[regarding "the fifth to Pharaoh"57,
"all lights are broken forth"58].
And in spiritual service it means:
After the service of the Jewish people in the time of exile,
they will come to the fifth level in the days of Mashiach,
as is known what is stated in the Midrash59
(in the manner of a narrative,
but from it one can learn a lesson),
that the tenth heifer will be specifically in the days of Mashiach,
and Moshe and Aharon with them60,
and from this it is understood that the tenth heifer has a special connection specifically with the elevation in the days of Mashiach:
Regarding the other sacrifices
(especially regarding the Paschal sacrifice)
there is a dispute among the poskim61,
and there are those who conclude,
that one may offer sacrifices in this time
(as already brought in the books of the early and later authorities),
but the tenth Red Heifer will be only in the days of Mashiach
(not earlier).
And this is to be connected with the sign of the letter –
"Koach":
"כח":
It is explained in many places –
also in chapter 14 of the continuation of the Hilula "Bati LeGani"
(which corresponds to this year),
and at length in the middle Rebbe's maamarim62 –
the concept of light, vitality, and koach,
and the aspect of koach becomes invested internally,
and therefore the investment causes a change and effect
(unlike in the aspect of light where there is no change or effect at all).
And in other words it means,
that koach is a level in Divinity that descends and becomes invested internally in the lowest levels in order to effect a refinement there,
until they cause in Him Himself a change, as it were,
as it is written63 "dyed garments from Bozrah... and all my raiment I have stained",
"I am with him in distress"64.
And the need for this descent and investment is,
for seemingly, even if He remains in the aspect of light, would one not suspect Him, Heaven forbid, that He would not accomplish all that is required in this refinement below? The explanation of this is:
Based on the law that when one is a party to the matter,
it affects him personally,
he acts in an entirely different manner compared to when he stands above the matter.
This is the content of Igeret Siman 28 –
that through the passing of the righteous
(just as through the red heifer)
the enrobement and refinement of the lowest levels is accomplished,
and through this there is the advantage of light from darkness.
The above discussion in the Igeret HaKodesh of the Alter Rebbe in connection with the passing of the righteous –
is particularly relevant to today, the day of the passing of the Baal HaHilula of Yud Shevat:
With him there was a particular emphasis on spreading your fountains outward into the outermost exterior,
in order to accomplish the refinement of the lowest level.
And his service is also alluded to in his name by which he is called in the Holy Tongue65:
"Yosef" –
on account of "Yosef Hashem li ben acher"66,
as is known the explanation of this67 that from this "acher" one makes a "ben".
"Yitzchak":
"יצחק":
in the future they will say specifically of Yitzchak "for You are our father"
(and not of Avraham nor of Yaakov)68,
as explained in Torah Or69 the reason for this,
because the future is connected with the elevation of the righteous who repent70,
all the more so the repentance of the intermediate ones
[and the Tanya is the book of intermediate ones].
all the more so the repentance of the wicked
(a wicked person who is not completely wicked or even a completely wicked person),
that also regarding them "no outcast shall be cast out" –
the matter of the transformation of darkness into light,
which is the primary service of Yitzchak.
(And this is connected with the service of the red heifer which will be specifically in the future (the tenth heifer)).
This also includes that from the aforementioned war and dispute
(connected with using Torah contrary to peace etc.)
no trace remains,
rather –
the advantage of light from darkness,
"so shall it increase and so shall it spread forth".
And in this time
(after there was already the exile of Egypt)
we have the promise that there will no longer be the matter of "hard labor" literally,
"with mortar and bricks"71 literally,
and likewise war and dispute literally,
rather one achieves this through exertion in Torah study –
"with mortar – this is a fortiori reasoning,
with bricks – this is clarification of the halacha etc."72,
as explained in Torah Or73.
And through this the victory of the war is automatically accomplished. Including the war against Amalek,
"the war of Hashem against Amalek from generation to generation"74,
one nullifies the coldness of Amalek,
until one transforms it,
the transformation of darkness into light,
and one comes to "the war of Amalek from generation to generation",
the generation of Mashiach
(as it states in the Targum75).
And from "the word of Hashem – this is the halacha"76,
that one holds with the ruling of the halacha in Torah,
and one does not wage war, heaven forbid, against it,
one comes to "the word of Hashem – this is the end"76,
and speedily, in our very own days.
According to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov77 that everything is by Divine Providence and one must derive from it a lesson in the service of Hashem –
one must also derive a lesson from the name of the neighborhood where the Tanya was printed
(where the Baal HaHilula lived for a period of ten years) –
"Crown Heights".
And as mentioned, even though it is a name given to this neighborhood by non-Jews,
and the name existed before the Baal HaHilula came here –
nevertheless, after the Baal HaHilula came here it became his place,
he became the master of the place,
and since the name of the neighborhood is by Divine Providence78, a Jew must learn a lesson from it.
The name of the neighborhood consists of two words –
"Crown Heights"
[and the printers indeed intended and printed the name of the neighborhood on the title page accordingly],
"Crown" means Keter. When one says Keter according to Torah –
the Mishnah says79 what this means:
"Three crowns are there: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of kingship." It follows that "Crown"
(Keter)
emphasizes that there must be the matter of Keter –
the three crowns,
the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of kingship:
The crown of Torah –
one must study Torah,
the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner aspect of Torah.
The crown of priesthood –
which "Aharon merited"80:
one must conduct oneself in the manner of Aharon the Kohen,
as per the instruction of the Mishnah81 "Be of the disciples of Aharon
(the High Priest)
loving peace and pursuing peace, loving the creatures and drawing them near to Torah." Simply –
conducting oneself with love of Israel. As explained in Tanya chapter 32,
and there that "loving the creatures" means "mere creatures".
The crown of kingship –
which "David merited, as it is said82 'His seed shall endure forever etc.'"80:
faith in the coming of David, King Mashiach,
"for Your salvation we hope all day long"83.
And regarding these three crowns, the main emphasis that applies to each individual is on the crown of Torah –
as the Rambam
(and the Alter Rebbe)
rules,
that the crown of kingship and the crown of priesthood are connected to conditions and specific individuals:
the crown of kingship is specifically connected to the house of David;
כתר מלכות איז פארבונדן במיוחד מיט בית דוד;
the crown of priesthood –
to lineage
(from Aaron the Kohen).
However, the crown of Torah is "placed, standing, and ready for every Jew..
whoever wishes may come and take it." And in other words, the Torah is "rolled up and placed in a corner; whoever wishes to learn may come and learn." He only needs to know that the "corner" is his place,
then he becomes connected to the Torah that is placed in the corner.
But the "crown of Torah" is connected and must come down into actual deed –
study is greater because it leads to action,
and especially –
in peace and love of Israel
(the crown of priesthood).
As our Sages said, "The entire Torah was given to make peace in the world,"
and "If the rabbi is similar to an angel of the Lord of Hosts, they shall seek Torah from his mouth,
and if not, they shall not seek Torah from his mouth,"
meaning that the rabbi who teaches Torah must conduct himself in a good manner, out of love of Israel
(and not that "evil reports go out about him" – ),
and in faith in the coming of the Messiah
(the crown of kingship),
to the point of knowledge and recognition of this –
because this is a foundation and principle of the entire Torah.
That is, the touchstone for the "crown of Torah" is when it comes down into the "crown of priesthood" –
peace and love of Israel,
and the "crown of kingship" –
faith and knowledge and recognition of the coming of the Messiah.
Afterwards, it is added,
that the name of the neighborhood is
(not "Crown" alone. Rather)
"Crown Heights":
"Heights" means a high place,
an elevation. And "Crown Heights" means "heights" within the "Crown" itself,
that is, that within the "Crown" itself there is an elevation and raising. And this is the continuation of the Mishnah:
After it is said that "Three crowns are: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, and the crown of kingship,"
the Mishnah continues, "and the crown of a good name rises above them."
That is, "heights"
(an elevation and raising)
in the "crown"
(in the crown) –
"the crown of a good name rises above them."
The lesson in this:
In addition to the study of Torah
(the crown of Torah),
love of Israel
(the crown of priesthood)
and faith in the coming of the Messiah
(the crown of kingship),
there must be a "crown of a good name" –
in every place his "good name" should be spread,
the good deeds that he does.
Furthermore:
"Crown Heights" is one name,
meaning that the "crown"
(crown)
and the "heights"
(the elevation within this itself –
"the crown of a good name rises above them")
must come together
(not as separate things,
the study of Torah,
love of Israel and faith in the coming of the Messiah and a separate matter –
the crown of a good name") –
and with an introduction:
The question on this Mishnah is known:
Since the Mishnah enumerates four crowns –
the Mishnah should have begun not "Three crowns are,"
but rather "Four crowns are,"
and then explained that the "crown of a good name" rises above the other three crowns?
One of the explanations of this is:
The "crown of a good name" is distinguished from the other crowns in that it does not come as a crown in itself.
That is, the "good name" does not come as a separate matter from Torah,
love of Israel, and faith in the coming of the Messiah,
for example –
that he has a "good name" because he bribed the newspapers to write about him,
and that the government should praise him and pat him on the shoulder and so forth,
Rather, the "good name" comes as a result and continuation of the first three crowns,
it "rises above them."
That is, his "good name" consists of the fact that he is absorbed in the study of Torah
(the crown of Torah)
and love of Israel
(the crown of priesthood)
and faith in the coming of the Messiah
(the crown of kingship),
to such an extent that in every place he arrives and in every place he is, he is passionate about the study of Torah,
love of Israel, and faith in the coming of the Messiah. And then he is given
(he does not take it himself)
the "crown of a good name,"
so that his "good name" is spread in every place that he is passionate about these three matters.
And on the contrary:
The "crown of a good name" "rises above them":
It is based on the first three crowns,
"above them,"
but the "crown of a good name" "rises above them,"
higher than them.
And this is the meaning of the name of the neighborhood "Crown Heights" as one name,
that one has all three crowns,
the crown of Torah,
the crown of priesthood and the crown of royalty,
and together with this and in continuation of this one also has the "Heights" in the "Crown" –
the "crown of a good name rises above them",
as it comes as one thing
(one name)
with "Crown".
May it be His will that the printing of the Tanya in this neighborhood among the rest of the Torah and commandments that are fulfilled in this neighborhood,
the neighborhood where the Baal HaHilula lived the last ten years in this world,
where his synagogue and study hall were –
should hasten even more that the synagogues and study halls in the diaspora,
including the synagogue and study hall of the Baal HaHilula,
and the entire neighborhood "Crown Heights" which is secondary to this study hall and synagogue –
will be transplanted to the Land of Israel,
"Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust",
and among them the Baal HaHilula and all the Nesiim before him,
until the Alter Rebbe etc.,
souls in bodies,
speedily in our days, literally.
According to the well-known teaching of the Alter Rebbe that one must live with the time,
with the daily portion of Chumash of the weekly portion and the day that one learns at that time –
one must also live and derive a lesson in life from today's daily portion of Chumash –
the seventh portion until the end of Parshat Beshalach.
At the beginning of the daily portion of Chumash, it discusses the incident of the waters of strife:
"And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed etc. and they encamped in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink etc. And the people complained against Moses, saying etc. And Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, 'What shall I do for this people? A little more and they will stone me.' And the Lord said to Moses etc. 'Take your staff in your hand and go etc. and strike the rock, and water will come out of it, and the people will drink etc.' And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah because of the quarrel of the children of Israel and because they tested the Lord, saying, 'Is the Lord among us or not?'" In continuation of this, the Torah tells about the war with Amalek:
"And Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim",
until the conclusion "The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation".
Our sages of blessed memory explain:
"Rephidim is nothing other than a weakening of the hands,
because Israel weakened their hands from words of Torah, therefore an enemy came upon them
(Amalek)
because the enemy comes only because of a weakening of the hands from the Torah".
Based on this, the juxtaposition of the portions is understood
(the portion of Amalek and the portion of the waters of strife),
as Rashi also explains:
"He juxtaposed this portion to this verse to say: 'I am always among you and ready for all your needs, and you say, "Is the Lord among us or not?"
By your lives, the dog comes and bites you, and you cry out to Me, and you will know where I am etc.'"
Upon this, the Baal HaHilula stands and explains the matter of "a weakening of the hands,
that Israel weakened their hands from words of Torah etc.",
for at first glance, regarding Torah, the matter of intellect is appropriate,
not hands,
and what is the matter of "a weakening of the hands" at all?
And he explains that the essence of the study of Torah must be for the sake of doing and fulfilling,
i.e., fulfilling that which one learns, and the learning is in order to know what one must do. Therefore, the term "hands" is used here
(not intellect),
because their function
(of the hands)
is action –
as Torah descends into actual deed,
and when the Torah descends into his hands,
into actual deed,
there is a "thus",
this is the touchstone that his study of Torah
(in intellect)
was proper.
But when "Israel weakened their hands from words of Torah",
one becomes weak in the essence of Torah,
for the sake of doing and fulfilling,
then "they give, heaven forbid, a place to Amalek who comes to fight with Israel,
and as it is written, 'The voice is the voice of Jacob, and the hands are the hands of Esau',
that when the voice of Jacob is not heard in synagogues and study halls etc., then, heaven forbid, the hands of Esau rule etc.",
there is a giving of place for the hands of Esau to threaten Jacob,
or even more –
to raise his hand against Jacob
[for even "one who raises his hand against his fellow" the Torah says that he is etc.).
Instead of him using his hands for that for which the Creator created them,
to be a hand that distributes charity
(as explained in Tanya ),
there is for him "a weakening of the hands",
and he uses the "pointed finger" not for the study of Torah,
but against another, may the Merciful One protect us...
Not so when Jacob strengthens himself in his voice in the study of Torah
(the voice is the voice of Jacob)
there is no place for "the hands are the hands of Esau".
From this is the lesson:
The Torah of a Jew must descend into his hands,
into actual deed
(study for the sake of doing and fulfilling),
and actual deed itself not in a manner of "a weakening of the hands",
but with fervor etc.
For superficially, a Jew can claim:
What is so relevant about Torah being actual action
(hands)?
Torah is indeed the wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and the Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, are entirely one
(as the Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya the superiority of Torah over commandments),
so why is there such a necessity for actual deed? One tells him that the essence of Torah study is for the sake of doing and fulfilling,
and this is the aspect that the Torah is his Torah,
unlike when with him there is no actual deed
(hands),
or actual deed in the manner of "weakness of hands,"
then even though he fulfills the Shulchan Aruch etc.,
the Torah is not called by his name.
And specifically when he has the "hands,"
it protects that Amalek "the hands are the hands of Esau" should not be able to meddle with him.
And one may add to this the connection of the above with the incident of the waters of Meribah at Rephidim,
where it was expressed that "Israel let their hands become weak from words of Torah,"
and the miracle of "strike the rock and water will come out of it":
Even though "the people quarreled with Moses,"
"the people complained against Moses,"
and "Israel let their hands become weak from words of Torah,"
until Moses argued that he could not turn back with them,
"and Moses cried out to the Lord saying, what shall I do with this people, a little more and they will stone me,"
so why should he go and act with them –
nevertheless the Almighty tells him that he can and must go down to their level
(the level of "hands,"
and "weakness of hands")
in order to act with them –
"pass before the people and take with you from the elders of Israel and your staff etc. take in your hand and go,"
and then "strike the rock and water will come out of it."
That is, as above:
It must not be "Israel let their hands become weak from words of Torah,"
Moses cannot refuse to act with the Jews,
rather he must go and act with them in actual deed, "take
(the staff)
in your hand and go"
(the opposite of weakness of hands),
because the essence of Torah is for the sake of doing and fulfilling.
And this is also the lesson from the very matter that the Almighty said to Moses "and your staff etc. take in your hand and go etc. and strike the rock and water will come out of it,"
and this will effect upon the Jews.
For superficially, one must understand:
Why was the miracle that specifically from a rock water came out –
a rock by nature does not have water in it,
and on the contrary:
from a rock one can bring out fire
(by striking (not speaking of Shabbat) one rock against another,
or iron against a rock,
sparks of fire come out from which one kindles a fire),
the opposite of water;
היפך פון מים;
and on the other hand, there are several stones which have water in them –
why was the miracle here that specifically from a rock
(which is the opposite of water)
water should come out?
Rather, from this is the lesson:
Even if one has to do with someone who is in the category of rock,
he does not have in himself
(openly)
any water,
and on the contrary –
he is entirely the opposite of water,
to the extent that "their hands became weak from words of Torah,"
one might think that one cannot act with him.
The Almighty says:
"and your staff etc. take in your hand and go,"
he should take with him the staff of God in his hand, that is
(in spiritual service)
the strength
(staff,
which means strength)
of Torah
[for "the Torah that Moses commanded us is an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob,"
every Jew received the Torah (and the strength of Torah) as an inheritance from Moses],
and "strike the rock,"
that is, striking through speech –
speech of the Torah of Moses,
a word of Torah –
to the one who is in the category of rock,
and this will surely effect "and water will come out of it,"
that from this Jew who was in the category of rock should come out "water,"
because one has revealed the water that exists within him in his innerness.
That is, that instead of him having "weakness of hands from Torah,"
from him will go "water" in actual deed;
וועט פון אים גיין "מים" בפועל;
and he will fulfill Torah and commandments in actual deed.
And through this that one brings about that "water" should also come forth from the Jews who are in the aspect of "rock,"
"their hands are slack from words of Torah" –
one also prevents that Amalek and the hands of Esau should come to disturb the service,
as is known that the essence of Amalek is coldness and doubts,
he wants to bring about that an I should be in the aspect of "rock" and that there should be "slackness of hands" from the Torah –
therefore one prevents against Amalek through "and you shall strike the rock." And one brings about among the Jews who are in the aspect of "rock" and their hands are slack from words of Torah that from them should come forth "water,"
they should repent and fulfill the Torah and commandments in their completeness.
The question arises:
If "Rephidim" is such a place where "the hands of Israel were slack from words of Torah" –
why did Moses bring them there,
"before a blind person do not place a stumbling block"?
One cannot answer that the cloud led them there –
because according to this the question not only does not become weaker,
but it becomes even stronger:
Since "before a blind person do not place a stumbling block" –
why did the Most High
(through the cloud)
lead them there?
The answer to this is:
In general, in the service of man, one presents a person with trials –
"the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God":
And on the contrary –
a descent is for the sake of an ascent. Through the trial in its simple sense,
that one tests him,
one comes to the second interpretation of trial,
from the term "I will lift up my banner" upon the mountains,
in the manner of what is stated at the end of our portion "the Lord is my banner" –
an elevation and ascent "upon the mountains,"
due to the advantage of the light that comes forth from the darkness,
as is also emphasized in the following portion –
the portion of Yitro,
from the term the advantage of the light from the darkness.
And so in our matter:
That which one brought Jews into "Rephidim,"
a place that is liable to cause slackness of hands from words of Torah –
was a trial,
in order that Jews should utilize their powers to overcome the trial. And through withstanding the trial they should be elevated to a higher level to which they would not have arrived were it not for the trial.
In the service of man, this is the service of "Yosef" based on "the Lord has added for me another son,"
that one makes from the "other" a son
(as above section 63):
Even at the time that one encounters a Jew who is in the aspect of "other,"
his hands are slack from words of Torah,
one should not despair of him, heaven forbid,
rather one must make from him a "son." And on the contrary:
The intention of the descent in him
(that he is in the aspect of "other")
is in order to bring forth even higher powers. As the Alter Rebbe writes in Tanya that the trial of foreign thoughts is in order to reveal the hidden powers of the son of the king.
As is explained regarding Elisha Acher:
Even though he heard a heavenly voice "return wayward children except for Acher,"
he should have striven with all his might to repent. Seemingly he can argue:
He heard a heavenly voice that he cannot repent? They say to him:
What does a heavenly voice matter to him? He is after all "sworn and standing from Mount Sinai"! The heavenly voice is only a trial to bring forth his powers from potential to actual,
that even though he was in the aspect of "other," from him should become a "son,"
through that which he will repent.
And in this was the emphasis and transmission of the master of the celebration –
the service of "Yosef":
To do with Jews who are in the aspect of "other" from whom others have already despaired,
and make from them sons
(openly)
to our Father in heaven.
That this is in general the role of a leader in Israel,
"the heart of the entire congregation of Israel" –
to awaken and reveal the heart of every Jew. For even at the time of "I am asleep" in exile, "my heart is awake" to the Holy One blessed be He and to His Torah and commandments
(as is interpreted in the Midrash).
And one should connect the above also with the haftarah of the current portion:
There it states "the righteousness of his unwalled towns in Israel." The sages of blessed memory say on this "the Holy One blessed be He did a righteous act with Israel by scattering them among the nations."
That is, that the descent into exile
(scattering them among the nations)
is for the sake of an ascent,
through this becomes "the righteousness of his unwalled towns,"
in the manner of "unwalled towns shall Jerusalem dwell"
(which is stated in the later prophets).
There is also a lesson from today's haftarah
[which is also read on the eve of Shabbat together with the weekly Torah portion which one reviews with the practice of "shnayim mikra ve'echad targum"] –
which also emphasizes the aforementioned point,
that there must be actual deed
(hands):
In the haftarah it is told that although Deborah the prophetess said to Barak son of Avinoam that he should go to war against Sisera etc.,
because this pertains to him,
Barak demanded that she go together with him. And so it was indeed in actuality.
Deborah could have thought:
There is indeed a Barak son of Avinoam,
so why must she go?
Nevertheless, the Torah relates that she went along,
because for various reasons it could be that Barak would not be able to do it perfectly or that he wanted to give her merit.
From this is the lesson regarding every Jew,
including every Jewish woman and daughter:
Every man and every woman must fulfill his service
(her service).
Not looking at the fact that there is present a great tzaddik –
like Barak son of Avinoam,
this is not sufficient to accomplish the service that belongs to the person.
For example –
lighting candles of the holy Shabbat on the eve of Shabbat
[as on this eve of Shabbat –
the tenth of Shevat):
Every Jewish woman,
daughter and little girl
(who has reached the age of education.
That is, education regarding this matter (the Neshek) even though regarding other matters she may not have reached the age of education)
must light candles of the holy Shabbat and festivals
(on the eve of Shabbat and festivals).
That is, not looking at the fact that the little Jewish girl knows that in the house there is her father, a complete tzaddik,
and her mother, a complete tzadeket,
and brothers and sisters –
she must light a little candle. And even though in the house there is already light –
through her little candle she adds even more light
(as it is stated in the Shulchan Aruch)
which illuminates her house,
the entire surroundings,
and the entire world
(especially if the little candle stands by a window,
then one sees openly how it illuminates the outside).
In the example of how it was with our mother Rivkah,
that already at three years she lit candles,
even though there were other great ones around her. As Rashi explains on the verse "And Yitzchak brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother." Where it is stated explicitly that she lit candles at three years,
and it could be that even before that she lit. And to such an extent –
that she lit a candle that was "a lamp burning from one Shabbat eve to the next Shabbat eve."
And likewise regarding a little boy in connection with wearing tzitzit and the like,
that it makes no difference if around him there are tzaddikim etc.,
because the child has reached the age of education regarding this matter
(even though regarding other matters it could be that he has not reached the age of education) –
he must fulfill it.
And likewise –
both for little boys and for little girls –
regarding the recitation of "Modeh ani" every morning. And the recitation of "Hareini mekabel alai mitzvat aseh shel ve'ahavta lerei'acha kamocha"
(before the prayer), and
(at the conclusion of the prayer)
"Ach tzaddikim yodu leshimcha yeshvu yesharim et panecha"
(as is being emphasized recently).
And through even one deed even of a small child
(a little boy or little girl)
he can tip "himself and the entire world to the scale of merit and bring him and them salvation and deliverance."
As per the ruling of the Rambam.
And even though "the harvest has passed, the summer has ended, and we have not been saved,"
and especially that Amalek comes and approaches him and throws into him doubts and coldness,
that Mashiach is not yet here etc.,
so what will help –
a small child's – doing?!
He (she)
is not affected by this,
because he knows that his

one deed,
all the more so more than that,
comes in combination together with all the good deeds and services of all Jews throughout all generations,
and with his one deed he adds another "brick" in this great building;
און מיט זיין מעשה אחד שטעלט ער צו נאך א "ציגל" בבנין גדול זה;
he is like a dwarf on the shoulders of a giant
(all the generations before him),
consequently he can see and hear further than the giant,
but also the dwarf must have eyes and ears to see and hear,
consequently he must do his service
(and cannot rely only on the service of the giant).
Through this one act, one tips the entire world to the side of merit and brings salvation and deliverance in actuality,
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah,
And from the "charity that the Holy One, blessed be He, performed with Israel by scattering them among the nations",
"the righteousness of our dispersion",
becomes "open cities shall Jerusalem dwell",
speedily in our days, literally,
and out of joy and a good heart.
He commanded to play a melody and delivered a discourse beginning with the words "I have come to my garden."
In order to make it easier, the source reference will also be mentioned in the discourses of the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab) of blessed memory
(which was not mentioned in the discourse "With the other leaders")
where it discusses the matter of the light of the living creatures and the power that was discussed in the discourse:
It discusses this in the discourse beginning with the words "You are standing today"
(in the continuation of the year 5672),
and afterwards in continuation of this in the discourses of Rosh Hashanah.
It is also customary every year to make a completion of a tractate on the tenth of Shevat,
in order to also fulfill according to those who are accustomed to fast on the day of passing,
through a completion of a tractate,
which causes joy at the conclusion of the Torah *125,
one then does not need to fast.
As is known, there are two customs regarding a yahrtzeit of a righteous person:
Regarding the day of passing of Moses our teacher on the seventh of Adar, it is said that it is a matter connected with the opposite of joy. On the other hand –
Regarding the day of passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai on Lag BaOmer, he requested that it be a day of celebration –
a day of joy. And there are customs this way and that,
those who conduct themselves that a yahrtzeit is the opposite of joy
(and they fast etc.),
and those who celebrate then a joy,
because then is a time of favor to request all matters etc. since then an elevation occurs for that righteous person.
One must therefore fulfill according to both opinions,
and especially since we are standing close to the days of the Messiah.
And as the Gemara says on the verse "And I will make your windows of kadkod",
regarding which there is a dispute between two Amoraim
(or two angels),
"one said shoham and one said yashfeh",
the Gemara concludes "The Holy One, blessed be He, said to them: Let it be like this and like this
(according to this one and according to this one,
and that is kadkod from shoham and yashfeh shall be built –
Rashi)."
From this we have,
incidentally,
a lesson:
When an Amora,
a rabbi and the like rules a halachah,
who is indeed connected person from person until Moses our teacher,
and his ruling has the force of a positive commandment and a negative commandment
(as the ruling of the Rambam),
even though another Amora or rabbi rules in a different manner –
the Almighty ultimately brings it about that both are correct,
"like this and like this",
because they rule according to the Torah and are connected until Moses our teacher etc.
And especially according to what is explained in Likkutei Torah, the matter in the spirituality of matters –
that "like this and like this" corresponds to Joseph and Benjamin,
two paths of service.
Regarding this in our case:
In order to fulfill according to both customs regarding the day of passing –
one conducts oneself every year
(on the day of passing of the tenth of Shevat)
to make a gathering,
a matter of joy,
and together with this –
to make a completion of a tractate,
joy at the conclusion of the Torah,
in order to nullify the matter of fasting according to the second custom.
This applies when the yahrtzeit is on a weekday,
when there is room for the opposite of joy and the matter of fasting on that yahrtzeit;
ווען ס'איז דא א נתינת מקום אויף היפך השמחה וענין התענית אין דעם יארצייט;
but when the yahrtzeit occurs on the Sabbath day,
when there may not be a matter of mourning and the opposite of joy and fasting,
and on the contrary –
it is a mitzvah to delight it with eating and drinking –
it is a logical reason to say that one should not then make a completion of a tractate
(to fulfill according to the second custom),
because this would emphasize as if there is a concern that were it not for the completion, a fast etc. would have been required on the Sabbath day, heaven forbid,
consequently, it diminishes the power of the Sabbath. Like the ruling of Father that on the Sabbath day one should not engage in any matters of joy that could involve a concern of mourning on the Sabbath.
On the other hand:
Since every year one conducts oneself to make a completion of a tractate on this day,
and it has already become three times, which constitutes a chazakah,
not making a completion could cause melancholy,
that one does not conduct oneself as one conducts oneself every single year.
And especially since the Sabbath day has a special connection with Torah
(and consequently –
a completion in Torah),
as explained in Torah Or,
based on the words of our Sages of blessed memory "everyone agrees that on the Sabbath the Torah was given."
Therefore, it is a logical reason to say that also when the yahrtzeit occurs on the Sabbath day, one should then make a completion of a tractate.
In order to fulfill it according to both rationales –
one will make a conclusion from a "non-conclusion." And based on this it will also be explained that
(also)
the conclusion of Tractate Niddah is not with a matter contrary to good
(as was discussed about this at length).
It was previously discussed that the conclusion of Tractate Niddah
(Gemara)
in the Jerusalem Talmud is not with a good matter,
because the Gemara in Tractate Niddah ends with chapter three,
as it is printed in the Talmud
(not like Tractate Niddah in the Babylonian Talmud where there is Gemara until the end of the tractate,
and there the conclusion is with good),
and there it does not discuss a good matter.
And even though the Gemara on the subsequent chapters in Tractate Niddah
(in the Jerusalem Talmud)
has not reached us –
nevertheless, this very fact is through Divine Providence,
and in practice it turns out that the conclusion of Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud is not with a good matter –
how does this accord with the principle that one concludes with good?
One can explain it,
that also in the Jerusalem Talmud of Tractate Niddah there should have been printed
(after chapter three)
the Mishnayot of the subsequent chapters
(even though they do not have any Gemara on them),
and then the conclusion of Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud would also be with a good matter
[“Taluyin” –
and it thereby negates the “bad culture” that appears before this,
according to Rashi’s explanation of “Taluyin” –
“If she does not see a discharge (and it concludes and seals:
) she is pure, etc., exempt”].
The rationale for this:
The order of printing the Mishnayot and the Gemara was:
In the Talmud they printed the thirty-six tractates which also have Gemara. And the tractates which do not have Gemara, only Mishnayot,
they did not print as a part of the Talmud,
but as a separate section –
Mishnayot.
Thus arises the inquiry regarding tractates where only a part of the tractate has Gemara on the Mishnayot,
whether one prints in the Talmud only the part of the tractate that has Gemara,
or one also prints the chapters that do not have Gemara
(in continuation of the chapters that have Gemara).
One finds several examples of this:
Tractate Tamid in the Babylonian Talmud –
only the first four chapters have Gemara
(unlike the last three chapters).
Nevertheless, they printed in the Talmud the entire Tractate Tamid,
also the chapters without Gemara,
in continuation of the chapters with Gemara. And in practice –
those who study the “daily page” indeed conduct themselves to study the entire tractate in Tractate Tamid
(not only the chapters that have Gemara!).
Tractate Shabbat in the Jerusalem Talmud:
In the Jerusalem Talmud, Kerenstein edition,
Piotrków and Zhitomir, only the chapters of Tractate Shabbat that have Gemara are printed,
and not the chapters without Gemara. But in the Vilna edition they also added the chapters without Gemara
(in continuation of the preceding chapters with Gemara)
[I do not know whether the printers asked anyone about doing this,
but this is what they did, and presumably they did ask].
Based on this, one need not say that what in Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud only the chapters that have Gemara are printed –
is according to the instruction of the great ones of Israel,
because there is no necessity to say so,
and on the contrary:
it is logical to say that also Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud
(where only a few chapters have Gemara)
should be printed also with the chapters without Gemara
(in continuation of the preceding chapters) –
for why should it be less than Tractate Tamid in the Babylonian Talmud and Tractate Shabbat in the Jerusalem Talmud
(Vilna edition).
And accordingly, it turns out that the conclusion of Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud is not at the end of chapter three
(which then would be with a matter not good),
but at the conclusion of the Mishnayot of Tractate Niddah,
which is with a good matter
(as above).
According to this, one need not arrive at the explanation that was discussed that time, that according to the Jerusalem Talmud the order of the six orders is Nezikin, Kodashim, Taharot,
it ends with Nezikin,
consequently the conclusion of the entire Talmud is not with the conclusion of Tractate Niddah –
because according to the above it turns out that also the conclusion of Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud is with a good matter. And in addition to this, according to that explanation it is only an explanation regarding the conclusion of the entire Talmud,
but the question still remains regarding the conclusion of Tractate Niddah and the conclusion of the Order of Taharot itself –
how is this a conclusion with a good matter.
And according to the above it is understood,
because the conclusion is truly with the conclusion of the Mishnayot.
However, there is still a question regarding the above discussion:
The Munkatcher
(author of Minchas Elazar)
made completions on several tractates,
and as is his way, he is meticulous in every matter and detail in the Torah
(and he wanted that others should also do so),
also in his completions,
not like others who make only a completion in connection with the general content of the topic,
and especially on tractates that deal with monetary laws,
as "he who wishes to become wise should engage in monetary laws etc.,
and he who wishes to engage in monetary laws should serve Shimon ben Nannas."
One sees in his books that he made a completion on Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud,
on chapter three
(where the Gemara ends),
but not on the Mishnayos.
This is seemingly a contradiction to the above,
that the completion of Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud must be at the end of the Mishnayos.
In truth, however, this is not a contradiction. And the reason:
It is known that the Munkatcher endeavored to learn a lesson from every single detail in the world,
also matters that were among non-Jews. As it is brought in the book that collects all his customs. As it is brought there, that even when he would travel on an iron train
(i.e., a "train"),
where each car had a number,
he would learn a hint or gematria from that number as it is connected to him,
and the service of Hashem etc.
Which is truly the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that everything is through Divine Providence,
and from everything that a Jew sees or hears, he must learn a lesson in the service of Hashem.
Now, if the Munkatcher endeavored to do so regarding a number of a car on a "train,"
then all the more so was he meticulous in every single detail in a matter of Torah
(to distinguish).
Therefore:
Since in the Jerusalem Talmud before us, only the first three chapters of Tractate Niddah are actually printed,
and the completion is at the end of chapter three –
the Munkatcher was meticulous in this
(because it is through Divine Providence),
and he made a completion on it.
But there is no necessity to say that from this there is a proof that in practice Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud need not be completed with the Mishnayos.
Why is one so lengthy about this?
Because from this emerges also a practical difference:
Among those who have taken upon themselves the good custom to learn the "daily page,"
they also began to learn the tractates in the Jerusalem Talmud –
it emerges from the above that one must learn in Tractate Niddah in the Jerusalem Talmud not only the first three chapters but also the Mishnayos in the subsequent chapters
(just as one learns all chapters of Tractate Tamid in the Babylonian Talmud,
not only the chapters with Gemara).
With this, one fulfills the custom of making a completion of a tractate on the tenth of Shevat.
There is a custom at a gathering on the day of Shabbos,
to explain a verse in the weekly portion together with Rashi's commentary,
and a matter in the notes of the father on the Zohar of our portion.
At the end of the Song of the Sea in our portion it says "Mikdash Adonai konenu yadecha." Rashi cites the word "Mikdash" and explains:
"The cantillation mark on it is a zakef gadol to separate it from the name of Hashem that follows it
(i.e., that the explanation in the words is not that this refers to "Mikon leshivtecha paalta Hashem" that precedes it –
as all commentators say –
and so in the words of our Sages, that the Mikon is with two hands – rather:)
the Mikdash –
asher konenu yadecha Hashem" –
a different Mikdash –
that specifically it will be "konenu yadecha,"
and specifically the Holy Temple is beloved etc.
("The Holy Temple is beloved, for the world was created with one hand, as it says 'Even my hand founded the earth,'
and the Mikdash with two hands")
and when will it be –
in the future to come –
when "Hashem will reign forever and ever"
("And when will it be built with two hands? At the time when Hashem will reign forever and ever, in the future to come, when all kingship is His") –
unlike all the commentators and our Sages who say that "Hashem will reign forever and ever" is entirely a separate matter!
It is entirely incomprehensible:
a) Rashi –
unlike all commentators and in the two verses. b) It is completely unusual in Rashi to bring and explain the
(reason -) trope
("the cantillation mark on it is a zakef gadol")
of the words of the verse that he is explaining?!
c) And one novelty leads to another novelty:
In addition to the novelty in the entirety of Rashi as above –
this compels Rashi to say a completely new matter:
"the world was created with one hand etc.,
and the Mikdash with two hands,"
The simple meaning of the verse –
and in Rashi himself on the spot –
that the creation of the world and all created beings was through the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He –
"And God said, 'Let there be light,'"
and the other utterances, until
(the last utterance)
"And God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness'" 145**;
"ויאמר אלקים נעשה אדם בצלמנו כדמותינו" 145**;
and here Rashi innovates that "the world was created with one
(hand),"
and also "the Sanctuary with
(two)
hands";
ידים";
and further several precise points in this Rashi.
The commentators of Rashi –
the Ra"am,
Gur Aryeh
(of the Maharal of Prague),
and others –
explain Rashi's intention in several ways;
זיינען מפרש כוונת רש"י בכמה אופנים;
but –
as is their way in every place:
the Ra"am primarily according to the halachah,
the Gur Aryeh
(also)
according to the allusion and the secret,
not according to the plain meaning,
and not necessarily –
the actual plain meaning of Rashi,
which is the manner of study of the son of the house for the verse –
who has not yet come to the study of Mishnah, Gemara, and secret. In a slightly different style:
their commentary explains how Rashi is sustained in the way of halachah and secret etc. –.
It is not a matter to ask questions and difficulties simply on the commentaries of the great ones of Israel,
except –
in order to explain their words,
through "uprooting mountains and grinding them against each other" one should come to clarification in the mountains themselves,
but together with this and as discussed many times –
the subject of Rashi in his commentary on the Torah is as Rashi emphasizes:
(first and foremost)
the simple meaning of the verse,
one must understand this Rashi according to the plain meaning
(in addition to the halachah and allusion and secret that are in Rashi) –
and as explained in the commentators of Rashi on this verse –
that the aforementioned commentaries are not the plain meaning of Rashi here:
in the Gur Aryeh –
regarding the Ra"am,
in several commentators of Rashi –
regarding both etc.].
Thus, according to the above, it is understood,
that in this verse there is a question in the simple meaning of the verse which Rashi must answer,
and the question compels Rashi, according to his method in the commentary on the Torah, to explain a commentary different from all commentators –
and to bring a support for such a great innovation –
from the cantillation note,
the trope in this verse
("the cantillation note upon it is a zakef gadol").
In the notes of my father on the Zohar in our portion, he explains
(in the last note on the portion),
that the day of Shabbat "is the seventh day, Binah
(the mother of the children)...
from which the six days and the six extremities of Zeir Anpin are blessed."
One must understand:
At first glance, this is a contradiction to what was discussed the previous Shabbat, that from Shabbat all the days are blessed
(not only for the six weekdays, but)
for all seven days of the week
(the encompassing),
including the coming Shabbat day. And he says a matter with reason that the day of Shabbat,
Binah,
is "from which the six days and the six extremities of Zeir Anpin are blessed"?!
One cannot say that a printing error has fallen into the note –
it should say "six,"
because in Zeir Anpin there are six extremities –
attributes.
Here is the place to explain the Rashi of the last Shabbat –
on the verse "And against all the children of Israel no dog shall sharpen its tongue, against man or against beast, so that you shall know that the Lord distinguishes between Egypt and Israel."
The questions were: (a)
What is the assumption that at the time of the plague of the firstborn the dogs would bark,
and therefore a special miracle is needed that "against all the children of Israel no dog shall sharpen its tongue"? (b)
Why specifically through this will it be "you shall know that He distinguishes between Egypt and Israel" –
more than through the plague of the firstborn itself? And one should add:
Here one finds a great innovation –
which was not in any of the plagues –
that "no dog shall sharpen its tongue
(not only)
against man
(but also)
and against beast etc." –
what is the reason for this? (c)
Why is the term "yacharatz" used here,
and not "yinbach" –
the usual term regarding dogs?
And particularly according to Rashi on "yacharatz" –
"I say that it is an expression of sharpening etc." –
that charitzah is stronger and sharper than barking
(ordinary) –
it makes the aforementioned difficulties even stronger:
What is the assumption that at the time of the plague of the firstborn the dogs would not only bark ordinarily
(barking)
but bark with sharpness –
charitzah,
and why specifically through this "you shall know that He distinguishes etc."?!
Also: (a)
Why does Rashi quote from the verse all these words "no dog shall sharpen its tongue" –
when he only explains the word "yacharatz"? (b)
From Rashi's language "I say that it is an expression of sharpening etc. and likewise 'lo charatz' etc. 'az tacharatz'" it is understood,
that he does not bring from these verses a proof here,
rather he explains all these verses according to the commentary that he states here from his own mind
("I say").
It is not understood:
Why does Rashi bring here all these verses after this where the term
(charitzah)
is found?!
And we must add another question:
Among the verses that Rashi brings is the verse from Isaiah "to a sharp-toothed threshing sledge",
which is a heavy tool that makes grooves. That is, that Rashi wants to bring out with this that "yecharetz" in our verse can mean not only a sharpness of people,
a great voice
(more than a mere barking),
as the interpretation is in the other verses that Rashi brings –
but rather in the manner of a sharpness of a tool,
which can be harmful.
[See the interpretation of the Targum on the verse:
"A dog will not harm with its tongue to bark"].
One must understand what Rashi wants to emphasize with this?
This time, in the "Kovtzim", many answers are printed,
and among them there are answers that began to go on the correct path,
according to the simple meaning,
but afterwards they "descended" from the path,
from the way of the simple meaning...
The explanation regarding all this:
It has been said many times that matters that are most simple, which the five-year-old student of Scripture knows by himself –
Rashi does not need to write in his commentary. And for example:
When Rashi explains a word in the vernacular,
he does not need to add anything more,
because the five-year-old who lives in France knows what the word means,
for he is accustomed to speak the language with his friends,
his parents,
and even with Rashi himself.
And regarding our matter:
The five-year-old knows that when there is a commotion with shouting –
dogs bark. Therefore,
when the plague of the firstborn came, there was a commotion in the street,
so that "there was a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as there has never been and such as there will never be again" –
the five-year-old student of Scripture understands by himself that naturally the dogs in Egypt barked.
So too, the five-year-old knows that dogs bark at the light of the moon. –
When the five-year-old student of Scripture used to finish his studies in the "cheder",
and it had already extended into the night,
the teacher would say to the children:
You should not be afraid of the fact that the dogs bark,
because the dogs do not bark at you,
but rather at the...
moon! And so they indeed saw when they went out into the street –
that the dog looks at the moon and barks. I do not know why it is so,
but such is the reality.
[In one of the "Kovtzim" they brought what is stated in the Radbaz that in the middle of the night dogs bark. –
The five-year-old, however, did not study the Radbaz.
But regarding this matter, he does not need to come to the Radbaz,
because he sees it himself when he goes home from the "cheder"].
And based on this:
Since the plague of the firstborn was "around midnight" of the night of the fifteenth of Nissan,
when there is a full moon –
the five-year-old understands that naturally the dogs in Egypt barked at that time
(without any connection to the plague of the firstborn).
[Regarding dogs, we do not find that "nature changed"...
Therefore, it stands to reason that just as the nature of the dogs in France in the time of Rashi is to bark at the moon,
so too was the nature of the dogs in Egypt].
It follows that the five-year-old student of Scripture knows simply that naturally, at the time of the plague of the firstborn, the dogs in Egypt barked –
both because of the cries,
and also at the moon.
Since the barking of the dogs at the plague of the firstborn
(both on account of the cries,
and at the moon)
is in the natural way,
and this does not cast any fear upon the Jews,
as a five-year-old understands that from a dog's barking there is nothing to fear
(even when the dog barks at the person),
and the dogs will not harm the Jews. Because it is about dogs of that place and its location,
who are accustomed to them and they to it –
there is no reason that the Almighty should make a miracle that the dogs should not bark,
as the five-year-old understands by himself that the Almighty does not perform a miracle without benefit,
and in the language of our Sages, "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not perform a miracle for nothing."
It can be, however, that the dogs bark with a special sharpness
(which comes from the "great cry throughout the land of Egypt, the like of which had never been")
which indicates a special anger and wrath of the dog,
which can cast a fright upon the Jews,
to terrify and frighten them
(from the damage that can result from the dog becoming so angry until it will snap),
this must be negated,
because this is the opposite of the joy of the redemption:
"And thus you shall eat it" etc.,
and additionally the five-year-old learned "And Moses said, 'With our young and with our old we will go, with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds we will go,'"
in order to be able to sacrifice to the L-rd,
"for it is a feast of the L-rd for us." So too in the continuation of the portion:
"Also your flocks, also your herds, take,"
"and flocks and herds, very heavy livestock." "Not a hoof shall be left."
So if the dogs would have barked with a sharpness
(snapping)
and this would have cast a terror and fright upon the Jews and their animals,
and at least one animal would have fled because of the fear
(as is the nature of animals that they flee because of fear) –
this would be the opposite of Moses' announcement to Pharaoh "Not a hoof shall be left."
Therefore the miracle had to be that "against all the children of Israel, no dog shall sharpen its tongue, from man to beast,"
specifically "sharpen,"
a sharp barking,
which is liable to terrify and frighten etc.;
וואס איז עלול להבהיל ולהפחיד כו';
but regarding ordinary barking there was no need for a miracle to nullify it,
because there is no benefit in such a miracle
(as above).
And this is the precision in the language of Rashi "I say that it is an expression of sharpening":
The source and proof for his interpretation that the miracle of "no dog shall sharpen its tongue" is only regarding a sharp barking
("expression of sharpening"),
and not regarding ordinary barking is –
from the opinion of Rashi himself,
"I say"
[and not because it is proven from the verses that Rashi brings –
because Rashi's language is "I say etc. and likewise 'did not sharpen' etc.,"
meaning that from this interpretation here one learns regarding the other verses,
and not the opposite (as above)],
because it stands to reason that one does not perform a miracle without benefit.
Upon this –
that since it is speaking about dogs of that place and location which are accustomed to them and they to it, therefore the Jews are not afraid of ordinary barking,
therefore there need not be a miracle without benefit for this –
it is explained why Rashi quotes
(from the verse)
not only the word "sharpen,"
but "no dog shall sharpen its tongue":
"Sharpen" regarding a dog applies by its tongue and by its teeth
(its teeth) –
as is emphasized in the verses which Rashi brings in the continuation of his commentary
[and therefore Rashi brings the verses,
because they explain the matter simply here –
the two manners of sharpening that apply by a dog,
by its tongue and by its teeth):
"He did not sharpen for the children of Israel, for any man, his tongue." And in addition to this Rashi also brings the verse "a sharp threshing sledge,"
meaning sharpness with an implement
(which makes incisions,
as above),
regarding sharpness
(not by its tongue but)
by its teeth,
which the sharpness
(by teeth)
is damaging
(not like sharpness by its tongue which casts a fright).
But regarding sharpness by teeth –
damage –
one does not need a miracle
(that "no dog shall sharpen"),
because it is speaking about a dog of its place which will not harm a Jew;
ווייל עס רעדט זיך וועגן כלב מקומו וואס וועט ניט מזיק זיין א אידן;
but regarding "its tongue" of this dog,
which becomes sharp through the "great cry throughout the land of Egypt etc." –
it can indeed cast incidentally a fright upon the Jews,
the opposite of the joy of the redemption,
and the animals can flee –
therefore there must be a miracle that "no dog shall sharpen its tongue."
Therefore Rashi quotes from the verse also the words "no dog shall sharpen its tongue,"
because this brings out a part of the interpretation of the matters in this verse,
and the reason why Rashi brings
(several of)
the verses from later in the Tanach in his commentary –
that the sharpening here speaks specifically about "its tongue"
(not by teeth),
because specifically regarding sharpening of the tongue one needs to have a miracle here.
The answer mentioned above why the miracle was specifically regarding "his tongue" and not teeth,
because the dog is accustomed to him, therefore it will not bite him –
is forced,
because here it speaks about a "great cry" in all of Egypt "such as there has never been and such as there will never be again",
and consequently the dogs are confused etc.,
it is possible that the dog would bite even those who are in his land and in his place.
So the main answer to this –
and an utterly simple answer
[and as discussed many times regarding a "blatant question" that one pays no attention to it,
so too regarding a "blatant answer" that is most simple, that one pays no attention to it]:
The Jews were in the house all the time of the night of the fifteenth
(the time of the plague of the firstborn),
and there is no possibility that the dogs would bite them.
However, regarding sharpening of the tongue –
which frightens and terrifies when heard in the house. And especially since the Jews know that in the morning they will be forced to go outside
(by Pharaoh,
and also by Moses and G-d).
Therefore the miracle had to be that "no dog shall sharpen its tongue".
And based on this, a "blatant question" on the verse "against all the children of Israel no dog shall sharpen its tongue etc. so that you may know etc." is also answered:
Since the Jews were in their houses,
how is it possible that the dogs would
(bark or)
sharpen against Jews, that the verse needs to negate this.
According to the above, this is understood,
because the sharpening is with their tongue which terrifies and frightens when one hears it in the house etc.
Based on this, one will understand the continuation of the verse –
"so that you may know that the L-rd makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel":
The fact that the plague
(the plague of the firstborn)
was upon Egypt and not upon the Jews –
there is no novelty in this regarding the plague of the firstborn,
because in all the plagues before this, the Egyptians saw that the plague was only upon them,
and not upon the Jews.
The unique novelty that was in the plague of the firstborn was –
that besides the fact that the plague of the firstborn was only upon Egypt,
an additional and unique distinction was expressed "between Egypt and Israel",
in that "against all the children of Israel no dog shall sharpen its tongue".
And in detail regarding the matter: (a)
The very fact that even dogs discern the difference between Egypt and Jews,
and therefore they bark with sharpness
(sharpening)
in a place where Egyptians are found,
but in a place where Jews are found "no dog shall sharpen its tongue" –
this brings out the wondrous and unique distinction between them. (b)
Furthermore:
In the very places of the Jews, the dogs also bark at the Jews
(in their houses) –
a bark in the usual manner,
and not that they become "mute dogs that cannot bark";
און ניט אז זיי ווערן "כלבים אלמים לא יוכלו לנבוח" 166;
but when it comes to "sharpen",
they go away from the place where Jews dwell and they run to the Egyptians,
and there they sharpen their tongue!
Therefore,
"against all the children of Israel no dog shall sharpen its tongue" most strongly emphasizes the "so that you may know that the L-rd makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel".
And based on this, several other precise points are understood.
In continuation of the fact that it is the tenth of Shevat,
there will surely be "stand ready all of you" and one will utilize the powers and blessings that one receives on this day to do the service that the master of the hillula intended and for which he gave powers and blessings,
as explained in his talks in Likkutei Dibburim and in many places that he intended and gave for this powers etc.
In order to give an additional strength in this –
they will give mashke from the farbrengen of the tenth of Shevat to all those who travel to other places, and each one will do in his place in all these matters that the master of the hillula intended in the dissemination of the Torah and the dissemination of the wellsprings outward,
And in general –
the campaigns:
love of Israel up to unity of Israel,
educating oneself and others,
Torah,
tefillin,
mezuzah,
charity,
a house full of books –
Yavneh and its sages,
family purity,
kashrut of food,
and candles of the holy Shabbat and festivals.
And the nullification of the terrible decree of "who is a Jew". And the "Torah scroll campaign" –
to endeavor that every Jew should receive a letter in one of the general Torah scrolls,
"Your people who are found written in the book".
Up to the "campaign" to bring our righteous Mashiach.
Due to the burden of the community and the holiness of the Shabbat day –
they will give the mashke in the "secretariat" and tomorrow one should go in there to take the mashke.
And the mashkeh will bring close the "day that is entirely mashkeh",
according to the teaching of the Alter Rebbe as the Rebbe Maharash brings,
whose "slogan" was "from the outset, go over" –
consequently, the mashkeh gives power that the service now should be "from the outset, go over",
and this should be a preparation for the coming of Moshiach on the "day that is entirely mashkeh" in a manner of "from the outset, go over".
And speedily in our days, literally.
Just as there will also be a "Chanukas HaBayis" –
they will also be given mashkeh from the farbrengen. And so as not to differentiate –
they should also take the mashkeh tomorrow in the "Mazkirus".
And here is also the place to mention regarding the "Maggbit" in connection with Yud Shevat,
that one should not forget to give to the Maggbit
(not speaking about Shabbos)
after Shabbos. And whoever wishes may also write his name and his mother's name –
and likewise all those who take mashkeh who travel to other places should write their names and their mothers' names and give it in the "Mazkirus" –
in order to read it at the "Tziyun" of the Baal HaHilula.
His Holy Majesty the Rebbe Shlita commanded the holy shliach Shy"a to play "Yehi Ratzon etc. that the Beis HaMikdash be built speedily and give our portion in Your Torah".
