It was spoken many times about the expression "each day does its work".
There are special days that contain many details,
and in truth, every day has many details,
because since "I was created to serve my Maker"2 in every moment,
there are in a day
(which has many moments)
many matters of
(serving one's Maker through)
Torah and mitzvos,
"your deeds"<sup>3</sup> and "your ways"<sup>4</sup>;
"מעשיך" 3 און "דרכיך" 4;
But in general, each day does its work,
because the many details of each day are included in the general category of that day –
the first day,
the second day, and so on until the seventh day.
Just as regarding the days of the week it is said that
(in general)
each day does its work,
the first day,
until the seventh day –
and the days of the week are connected with the sun,
because upon the sun depends "and there was evening and there was morning",
which constitutes a complete day –
so too is this regarding the days of the month,
which depend on the moon –
that each and every day of the days of the month does its work.
That is, in addition to what every day of the week or every day of the month has in common with all other days of the week or days of the month –
there is the unique work of each individual day.
B
ב
Among the days of the week themselves
(each of which does its work)
the seventh day stands out,
the day of Shabbos –
"You called it the delight of days"5.
Similarly, among the days of the month themselves
(each of which does its work)
one day stands out –
Rosh Chodesh,
which is analogous to the "delight of days" among the days of the week –
as explained in many places6 that Rosh Chodesh in relation to the days of the month is analogous to the head of a person in relation to the body,
and similarly Rosh Hashanah in relation to the year.
And on this day, both things come together,
the "delight of days" of the days of the week and the "delight of days" of the days of the month –
that it is Shabbos Rosh Chodesh.
In Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh themselves, there are two matters: (a)
A common aspect with all Shabbosos and Roshei Chodashim of the year. (b)
Their unique matter in and of itself,
in which this Shabbos or Rosh Chodesh is –
"once in a year".
So too with all days,
and Shabbosos and Roshei Chodashim,
that they have a common aspect among themselves
[for example:
the days of the week of a particular week have a general common aspect that they are all in this week.
Similarly, the days of the month have a common aspect among themselves that they are all in this month,
and similarly the days of the year are all in this year];
ועד"ז ימי השנה זיינען אלע בשנה זו];
and also a unique matter in and of itself.
And because of this unique matter, the day is –
"once in a year".
And it is especially emphasized regarding
(the Roshei)
Chodashim:
There is a general matter regarding all Roshei Chodashim –
that "You gave Roshei Chodashim to Your people"7. Afterwards, there is the unique matter of each individual Rosh Chodesh.
And in particular, according to what is explained in the writings of the Arizal and in many discourses9,
that each and every month has its own unique combination of the Name Havayah,
and Havayah is from the term "brings into being"10, gives life and sustains,
consequently, each combination in it is connected with a different life-force,
it follows that each month has a different life-force from a different combination. And from this it is understood regarding each Rosh Chodesh,
which is the head of the entire month.
And because of this unique matter of each Shabbos and month,
in which it is "once in a year",
it is understood from many discourses and matters that a matter of "once in a year" is drawn down upon the entire year until that matter comes again in the following year.
Because of the fact that the day is a Shabbos in general –
it blesses only the coming days of the week11.
And similarly, Rosh Chodesh in general has a connection only with the days of this month;
ועד"ז ראש חודש בכלל האט א שייכות נאר מיט ימי חודש זה;
however, because of the unique matter of this Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh,
which is "once in a year",
it is drawn down upon the entire time of the year until that matter comes again.
So too with this Shabbos Rosh Chodesh:
It has in it a common aspect with all Shabbosos and Roshei Chodashim of the year,
but it also has a unique matter in and of itself,
in which it is "once in a year" –
that it is the first Shabbos after the month of Tishrei and the first Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei
[in addition to the fact that it is Shabbos Parshas Noach (as is known the teaching of the Alter Rebbe12 that one must live with the time,
with the unique parshah at that time of the year) and it is Rosh Chodesh Mar-Cheshvan],
and in this matter, this Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh are "once in a year",
it is only once in a year.
And from this special aspect,
that in this, Shabbos Rosh Chodesh is "one in a year" –
it is drawn down upon the entire year until there again comes the first Shabbos after Tishrei and the first Rosh Chodesh after Tishrei.
It turns out that on this day there are three special aspects
(in which it is "one in a year")
that are drawn down upon the entire time until these aspects come again: (a)
It is the first Shabbos after the month of Tishrei. (b)
The first Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei. (c)
Both things together
(for there is no necessity that the first Shabbos after the month of Tishrei be on the same day as the first Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei,
and in this year they come together,
consequently a third aspect comes about).
From this special aspect of this Shabbos Rosh Chodesh
(that it is the first Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei)
there must also be a lesson in the service of man,
A lesson that is understandable for everyone,
from "your heads, your tribes" to "the hewer of your wood" and "the drawer of your water"13,
because it is one Torah for all Jews of all types.
From this it is understood that the lesson must be connected with actual deed,
and on the contrary –
the deed is the main thing14,
for in the matter of deed, all Jews from "your heads" to simple people are equal.
And on the contrary –
with "your heads" one must emphasize the matter of deed even more than with simple people:
When one tells a simple person that there must be deed and the deed is the main thing,
one need not argue with him,
because he understands it simply. But the Torah emphasizes it for him –
so that he should know it not only because such is his situation
(that he is a simple person, consequently he is only connected to deed),
but so that it should be established for him that such is also the truth of the matter, that the deed is the main thing.
However, when it comes to "your heads",
one must argue with him that the deed is the main thing –
because he is after all "your heads",
a great one in Israel,
a leader of Israel,
a leader in the entire world,
so what does it mean that he must occupy himself with deed?!
One must argue with him and say:
Listen well –
in the Torah it is written that the deed is the main thing,
which was also said to you,
consequently you too must do in actual deed. And not only "too",
but the deed is the main thing.
From this it is understood that there must be a special lesson in connection with actual deed from this special aspect of this Shabbos –
the first Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei.
A question arises:
What is the boast that one stands in the first Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei? Chassidus15 explains
(based on what is written in the Baal HaTurim16)
that Tishrei is the letters of "Reishis",
because Tishrei is a head for the entire year. And the emphasis on the virtue of the month of Tishrei need not be sought in a distant place, for the name of the month itself
(Tishrei, letters of Reishis)
emphasizes it,
so when one finds oneself in the first Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei, this is seemingly a descent –
so why does one boast that there is a special lesson from this first Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei?!
It will be understood after the aforementioned introduction that the deed is the main thing –
because the main emphasis on actual deed in this year begins on this first Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei,
as will be explained.
Also in the month of Tishrei the emphasis is on deed,
because the principle that the deed is the main thing applies throughout the entire year.
As one sees immediately on Rosh Hashanah
(the beginning of the month of Tishrei):
The Rambam writes17,
"Although the shofar blowing on Rosh Hashanah is a decree of the Scriptural verse, it contains a hint, meaning: Awake, sleepers from your sleep, etc." But nevertheless, it is understood that the main mitzvah on Rosh Hashanah is –
the actual deed of shofar blowing:
The mitzvah of the day is not "in a hint" but "with a shofar". Only in addition there is also a "hint",
that "Awake, sleepers, etc."
One sees thereby the emphasis that the deed is the main thing.
Likewise, regarding all the mitzvos, the principle is that the deed is the main thing.
There is indeed also action in thought and action in speech,
and conversely, thought and speech within deed –
but obviously, "the deed is the main thing" means primarily the action within action.
Thought and speech that are part of action also affect that the action should come out in actuality. Furthermore:
There are mitzvos where the thought and intention of the mitzvah is a part of the action of the mitzvah –
as it is regarding Sukkos18
(as the Alter Rebbe brings in his Shulchan Aruch19.
And likewise regarding Tefillin20 and other mitzvos20):
In the verse21 it says "In sukkos you shall dwell for seven days, so that your generations may know that I caused the children of Israel to dwell in sukkos etc." So the law is that the intention of "so that they may know" is a part of the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah.
That is, that the thought and intention in the mitzvah is a part of the mitzvah itself,
not merely a "hint" in the mitzvah
(as regarding shofar,
as above).
Nevertheless, the essence of the mitzvah –
is the action of dwelling in the sukkah in actuality
[according to the Yerushalmi21 the making of the sukkah is also a mitzvah. But the Alter Rebbe rules22 that the primary mitzvah is dwelling in the sukkah,
and therefore one does not recite a blessing on the making of the sukkah,
because "its making is not the completion of the mitzvah"].
As it is also regarding the mitzvah of taking the Four Species on Sukkos,
"And you shall take for yourselves etc."22:
In this mitzvah there is also the intention of unity,
and holding the Four Species corresponding to the chest and heart as the Alter Rebbe writes in the Siddur23
(although these intentions are not a part of the fulfillment of the mitzvah,
as is the intention of "so that they may know" in the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah) –
nevertheless, the essence of the mitzvah is the actual action of taking the Four Species.
Likewise regarding Yom Kippur, one sees the emphasis specifically on a matter of action:
On Yom Kippur there are many matters,
matters of actual action that one must do or not do,
and spiritual matters,
teshuvah etc.
In what does Yom Kippur particularly distinguish itself as "one in a year" –
that it is a day of fasting and affliction.
The matter of teshuvah also exists throughout the entire year,
as the Rambam writes24 that "teshuvah and crying out are always beneficial",
only "during the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur it is most beneficial and is accepted immediately",
and during the Ten Days of Repentance themselves "Yom Kippur is a time of teshuvah for every individual and for the community etc."
However, regarding the matter of fasting and affliction, Yom Kippur is "one in a year",
because this exists only on Yom Kippur and not during the rest of the days of the year. And on the contrary:
During the rest of the days of the year this is forbidden,
because then there must be "and you shall greatly guard your souls"25 and the service and refinement throughout the year must be in a manner of closeness and positivity,
not through distance, rejection, and negation.
And although the Alter Rebbe writes in the Shulchan Aruch26 that because of the matter of teshuvah one may fast
(also during the rest of the days of the year) –
this is nevertheless because of a new matter,
an undesirable matter,
that has come upon that person,
he needs to have a new rectification through a fast;
דארף ער האבן א תיקון חדש ע"י תענית;
but the order of teshuvah in itself is not connected with fasting.
And on the contrary:
The perfection of teshuvah,
which is the higher teshuvah –
is specifically from within joy, as explained in Igeres HaTeshuvah27,
connected with the study of Torah28 etc.,
And even the lower teshuvah
(at the beginning of service) –
the Alter Rebbe says in Igeres HaTeshuvah29 that "the mitzvah of teshuvah from the Torah is only the abandonment of sin",
complete regret over the past and a good acceptance for the future,
"and not as the common people think that teshuvah is fasting." Only "in order to hasten and speed the completion of the atonement of his soul",
there is also the matter of fasting.
However, on Yom Kippur the order of service is that it is a day of fasting.
And actually,
even on Yom Kippur the fast is not merely a matter of negation etc.,
but it is in a manner of "to sustain them through hunger"30,
then one receives vitality through the fast,
"their vitality is from the aspect of hunger itself",
as the Alter Rebbe explains in Likkutei Torah31.
There are those who specifically require an explanation from gentiles and gentile-ness,
an explanation for the animal soul or at least the intellectual soul.
Consequently, they want an explanation specifically from gentiles regarding the questions that were asked about the matter of fasting among Jews
(regarding Yom Kippur and the like),
that ostensibly this is a wild thing
(G-d forbid),
(ח"ו),
how is it that a rational person should do it,
it is contrary to intellect etc.
One sees that recently it has been revealed in the science of medicine
[- not the Book of Medicine that Hezekiah hid 32,
the Book of Medicine was a matter of holiness etc.
And this is one of the reasons why he hid it,
because the world was not worthy of it –
but rather medicine in its simple sense for people],
that there are conditions in human beings where the matter of hunger through fasting is beneficial for their life –
"to keep them alive through hunger".
King David already wrote it in the Book of Psalms 30 thousands of years ago. But the Almighty wanted that in human intellect it should take thousands of years until one would come to it on one's own...

From the above one sees that also in the month of Tishrei the matter of "the deed is the main thing" is emphasized.
Nevertheless, the main matter of actual deed of this year begins in the month of MarCheshvan,
as one sees in actuality,
and why do I need a proof? It is logical:
Everyone sees in actuality regarding himself that however much effort he puts in the month of Tishrei that it should be actual deed,
he must,
with no alternative,
give at that time so many hours to matters of thought and speech.
Only after the month of Tishrei,
beginning from the first Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh after Tishrei,
does the main emphasis on actual deed begin.
As is known 33 that after the month of Tishrei
(in general)
the order of service of "and Yaakov went on his way" 34 begins,
which emphasizes the order of service of actual deed:
"And Yaakov":
"ויעקב":
It is known that Jews are called by three names
(in order from above downward) 35,
"Yeshurun",
"Yisrael",
and "Yaakov",
as is understood from their simple meaning that "Yeshurun" is the highest level,
then "Yisrael",
then "Yaakov".
And as explained in many places the difference between "Yisrael" and "Yaakov",
that "Yisrael" is the letters "li rosh" (to me a head) 36,
which is connected to Tishrei, the letters of reishit (beginning),
a matter of head.
But "Yaakov" is from the term "eikev" (heel). And eikev is the matter of action in a person,
and in the deed itself –
the deed within the deed.
"Went":
"הלך":
In the deed itself there is walking
(with the feet) –
the deed within the deed.
"On his way":
"לדרכו":
"On his way" of Yaakov.
That is, it is not a way of Yisrael,
"li rosh",
but a way of Yaakov whose essence is actual deed.
And the order of service of "and Yaakov went on his way" begins for every Jew
(primarily)
at the beginning of the month of MarCheshvan –
when one departs from the month of Tishrei,
the letters of "reishit",
and one enters the world,
each to his place to do his service in actual deed.
And knowing that "the deed is the main thing" –
one need not have any further explanation of the superiority of the first Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei,
when the order of service of actual deed begins –
"and Yaakov went on his way".
And since "all beginnings are difficult" 37,
and the beginning of the service in actual deed,
"and Yaakov went on his way",
begins on the first Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei –
it is understood,
that at that time one has special powers to break through the path in the order of service of actual deed.

ט
From this is understood the lesson of the first Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei:
Departing from the month of Tishrei and entering the month of MarCheshvan is seemingly a descent,
as even a simple person sees:
Tishrei has in it festivals,
and not just that,
but "abundant in festivals" 38.
But the month of MarCheshvan has not a single festival.
As has been discussed many times,
that every month has a festival,
in Kislev is Chanukah.
And so on in all the months. With one single exception –
the month of MarCheshvan,
which has not a single festival.
Moreover:
It states in the Yalkut 39 that the first Holy Temple was built in the month of MarCheshvan,
but it was not inaugurated until the following month of Tishrei.
Similar to what was with the Tabernacle that Moshe built,
that its work was completed in the month of Kislev,
and it was erected only in the month of Nissan. But according to this, the month of Kislev remains owed –
"and from now Kislev lost out, in which the work was completed,
the Holy One, blessed be He, said: Upon Me to repay,
what did the Holy One, blessed be He, repay him? The dedication of the Chashmonaim",
which was in the month of Kislev 40.
And he concludes in the Midrash,
that thus one also owes the month of Cheshvan for the fact that then the First Temple was completed and it was not inaugurated,
therefore –
"and likewise MarCheshvan, the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to repay it",
in the Third Beis HaMikdash
(similar to how Kislev was repaid with the inauguration of the Second Temple on Chanukah),
and moreover –
in the Third Beis HaMikdash it will be "double for wisdom".
From this we see that in the month of MarCheshvan there is a great sorrow,
over the fact that then the First Temple was completed and nevertheless it was not inaugurated!
And this is a true sorrow,
and the proof of this is that it is said "MarCheshvan, the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to repay it".
It turns out that in the month of MarCheshvan there is a sorrow already for thousands of years since the completion of the building of the First Temple in the month of MarCheshvan!
One only hopes that speedily in our days, in the month of MarCheshvan, the Third Beis HaMikdash will be established.
And the precision in "speedily in our days" is:
In the month of MarCheshvan itself there are many days. And especially in this year,
which is a full year,
there are thirty days in the month of MarCheshvan –
one hopes and prays that the Third Beis HaMikdash will be established not at the end of the month,
but speedily in our days –
in MarCheshvan itself,
at the beginning of the month,
and indeed "now"!
In any case –
from this it is understood that until the Third Beis HaMikdash is established,
in the month of MarCheshvan there is a great sorrow because of the fact that then the building of the Beis HaMikdash was completed and it was not inaugurated.
In addition to this, that in this month there are no festivals.
It turns out that in this month there is a state of great descent relative to the month of Tishrei which is abundant in appointed times.
Nevertheless, a Jew is not affected by all these calculations –
because he knows only that "I was created to serve my Maker"2,
and that the Supreme One says that "the deed is the main thing",
and this matter exists also in the month of MarCheshvan. And moreover:
Not only "also" –
but then begins the primary service connected with actual deed in the world,
which is "the deed is the main thing" –
"And Yaakov went on his way".
One does not pay attention that "I was created to serve my Maker" also has a connection
(at least in a manner of pleasantness)
with the month of Tishrei:
"To serve" –
is the letters of Tishrei
(without a yud).
And when there is the "to serve my Maker",
where "my Maker" refers to the World of Atzilus41,
"blessed is your Maker"42,
which corresponds to the yud of Chochmah,
one has a yud in the word "to serve",
consequently it becomes the letters of Tishrei.
And the concept of "Tishrei" letters of "to serve" my Maker,
a Jew has throughout the entire year,
because in every moment that he lives
(throughout the entire year)
it is "I was created to serve my Maker". And moreover:
In the month of MarCheshvan he has it even more,
because then "the deed is the main thing" is more emphasized.
And furthermore:
Then is the beginning and opening of the path of the order of service in this year in "the deed is the main thing"
("And Yaakov went on his way"),
one then has even more strength to perform the service,
because "all beginnings are difficult" and one must then break through the path for the order of service throughout the entire coming year
(as above).
The Jew can further ask:
"And Yaakov went on his way" is seemingly a lowly state relative to how he was beforehand.
For the concept of "And Yaakov went on his way" in the simple meaning of the verses regarding our forefather Yaakov was seemingly a descent relative to his state beforehand:
Previously he was in the land of his father's sojournings,
Yitzchak and Avraham
(for also his father's father is called by the name father,
as Rashi explains43 regarding the name of Yisro "Reuel"),
in Be'er Sheva. And afterwards was "And Yaakov departed from Be'er Sheva and went to Charan"44,
"the burning anger of the Place in the world"45,
to Lavan,
which is obviously a state opposite to "And Yaakov dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings"46
(which was later, when Yaakov came).
The Jew asks –
how can he engage in the service in "Charan"?
One tells him:
Going to Charan, Yaakov also feared Lavan and Esav47,
the Supreme One promised him that "And behold, I am with you and I will guard you wherever you go, etc."48. And Yaakov had with him in Charan "the Fear of Yitzchak" and "the God of Avraham"49.
When the Most High promised Yaakov, as he was going to Charan50, "And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and you shall spread out to the west and to the east, etc., and all the families of the earth shall be blessed through you and through your seed." That is, not only that he himself would spread out and conquer the entire earth,
but also "your seed" would do it. This is the greatest blessing that can be given to a person in general, and to a Jew in particular,
that also your seed will be like him*50.
And upon hearing the blessing from the Most High, it brought about in Yaakov that "Yaakov lifted his feet and went to the land of the people of the east"51,
because "when he was informed of the good news that he was assured of protection, his heart lifted his feet and he became light to walk"52.
That is, even though Yaakov was going from the land of his father's sojourning to Charan,
he knew that there the Most High is with him and protects him,
and moreover –
specifically there he would be blessed with the greatest blessings.
From this, the lesson for now is also understood:
At the time when the beginning of the month of Mar-Cheshvan arrives,
and a Jew departs from the month of Tishrei, which is abundant with festivals, etc.,
and for him it becomes "and Yaakov went on his way",
that he goes out into the world to do his service,
and in general –
the service of actual deed,
he has nothing to fear,
because even then, "I was created to serve my Maker",
consequently the Most High is with him. And on the contrary –
specifically "the deed is the main thing".
So that specifically when he performs his service in actual deed in the world
(beginning from the month of Mar-Cheshvan)
he is blessed with all these blessings,
including a blessing also upon "your seed",
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said53 that "the main progeny of the righteous are good deeds",
"What are fruits? –
commandments"54.
The lesson from this is as stated:
Standing at this first Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei,
when it is the beginning of the entry into the service of actual deed in the world,
"and Yaakov went on his way" –
one must accept good resolutions,
not only in thought and speech,
but primarily in actual deed,
for the service in the coming time.
And that one should do it to the extent of a manner of "and you shall spread out".
Which will further hasten,
and further spur on,
the "I will hasten it"55 of "the breaker has gone up before them"56,
And the third Beis HaMikdash is established in the month of Mar-Cheshvan
(as it states in the Yalkut39),
and that very thing –
speedily in our days.
And even during the time of exile, there is a continuous increase of light in all matters of Torah and commandments and in all matters that Jews need,
so that even in exile "for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings"57.
So that very soon, the true and complete redemption comes,
and the nations will bring Jews to the Land of Israel as one brings a meal-offering in a pure vessel
(as it states in today's haftorah58),
And speedily in our days.
In addition to what was stated above,
there is another aspect in this Shabbos –
that it is Shabbos Parshas Noach. But we are now speaking about the matter unique to this year –
that this day is both the first Shabbos and also the first Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei.
For all that was discussed above is the general lesson from the fact that it is the first Shabbos and the first Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei,
that this is connected with the advantage of "the deed is the main thing".
It is, however, also understood that in this very matter of "the deed is the main thing", there are two lessons –
one from the aspect that it is the first Shabbos after the month of Tishrei,
and a second from the aspect that it is the first Rosh Chodesh after the month of Tishrei.
The matter in this will be understood based on the difference between Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh:
Shabbos is from the days of the week,
which are connected with the course of the sun
(because "it was evening and it was morning" (which constitutes a day) is dependent on the course of the sun).
Rosh Chodesh is connected with the course of the moon
(as above, section 62 and onward).
The difference between the sun and the moon is:
In the sun, there are no changes.
Even though a year is dependent on the course of the sun for 365 days,
and every 365 days a new year occurs –
nevertheless, no innovation occurs in the sun and in the "to give light upon the earth"59 of the sun,
it merely repeats again the order of the sun's course,
as it was before 365 days.
With the moon it is exactly the opposite:
In it there are always changes. And on every Rosh Chodesh there is an actual renewal in the light of the moon on the earth:
Before the molad there was no light,
"He will visit your dwelling"60,
and at the time of the molad the moon begins to shine anew,
and each day its light becomes greater.
And as the saying61 "The moon has no 'shanah' at all,
just as the sun has no 'chodesh' at all":
The meaning of "shanah"
(which is connected to the sun),
is from the term shanah62,
that the order that was in the previous year repeats itself again.
However, "chodesh"
(which is connected to the moon)
its meaning is from the term chiddush63.
"He has placed the world in their heart"64 –
every matter in the conduct of the world is reflected in a Jew.
On the contrary:
It is not that the conduct of the world is reflected in a Jew,
rather the conduct of the world in heaven and on earth is dependent on the conduct of a Jew. As even a simple person understands from what is written in the verse "If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and do them –
the deed is the main thing –
then I will give your rains in their time and the land will give its produce etc."65.
That is, that it is dependent on the service of man below that rains come from heaven and "the land will give its produce".
Accordingly, it is also understood regarding the course of the sun and the course of the moon in the world that this is reflected,
and this is dependent on the service of a Jew below.
The concept of the sun and the moon in the service of man:
As discussed earlier at length66, there are two general categories in the service of man:
Matters in service which are in the category of "it shall not be exchanged",
without any change whatsoever. For example, like the sun:
Regardless of the state of the person and who he is etc. –
one must say every morning immediately upon awakening67 "Modeh Ani". This is a matter that "shall not be exchanged".
Regardless of whether beforehand he simply slept,
or his soul was above and innovated innovations in Torah
(as it states in Chassidus68)
[Where is it stated in Nigleh? It is stated in Bereishis Rabbah69 that at night the soul "ascends and draws life for him from above". What life is for a soul above –
"He is our life"70,
Torah. It follows that at night the soul ascends above and draws Torah. Only afterwards, when the soul descends back into the body, there must be "I toiled and I found"71 and the Torah must come down to him in understanding and comprehension.
For example, as it was at the Giving of the Torah,
that first there was "from the heavens He made you hear His voice"72,
and afterwards it comes down in the study of Torah with understanding and comprehension. And just as this was at the Giving of the Torah,
at the time of "You revealed Yourself in the cloud of Your glory upon Your holy people"73,
so is it drawn down to Jews in all the years and in all the generations] –
He must say "Modeh Ani" when he arises from sleep.
And after that he says the morning blessings.
And in addition, there are several other things that must be said without change every day:
One must recite the Shema twice daily,
as it is written74 "and when you lie down and when you rise up",
in the morning and in the evening,
and one also recites it before going to sleep
(the Shema on the bed).
And each time one recites the same portions of the Shema,
and so it has been recited in all the days and in all the previous generations,
until the time of Moshe,
and even before that –
in the time of Yaakov,
as is known that Yaakov and the tribes recited "Shema Yisrael" –
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said75 that the tribes said "Just as there is only One in your heart, so too there is only One in our heart". One sees that this is a matter without change in all times.
In addition, regarding the silent prayer,
one recites it without change three times daily. And regarding the first three and last three blessings –
one recites them without change both on Shabbos and Yom Tov and on weekdays.
It is true that each time one reads the Shema,
or prays the silent prayer and so on in all matters of Torah and mitzvos which are in the category of "it shall not be exchanged"*75,
it must be "as something new"76,
with more vitality and liveliness than the previous time,
until "new things"*76 –
but each time one recites the same words without change, Heaven forbid,
only the recitation itself is with renewed vitality etc.
And in the constant matters in the service of man, which are analogous to the sun,
in a manner of "it shall not be exchanged" –
we have the instruction from the first Shabbat after the month of Tishrei
(for Shabbat is connected with the course of the sun),
that now begins a new year of the service in which "the main thing is the deed" in the constant matters.
That is:
Even in the constant matters in the service of man there must be a novelty.
Although one has already read the Shema and prayed many times, and so forth,
one must now read the Shema and pray,
in a manner of "new things",
with such new vitality as if one had not done it until now.
He asks:
But we are speaking about the service connected with the sun,
in which there are no novelties –
how then does one tell him that his constant service
(analogous to the sun)
must be in a new manner?
They answer him:
In matters of the world there is indeed no change or novelty,
as it is stated in Tanya77 that all created beings
(animals, etc.),
including the host of heaven, do not change their function,
and they only repeat that which was before, etc.;
און ס'חזר'ט נאר איבער דאס וואס עס איז געווען לפנ"ז כו';
but Israel are likened to the moon*77,
and "they are destined to be renewed like it"78 –
with a Jew there must be a novelty in every moment in his service,
for a Jew must feel that in every moment the creation is brought into being anew from absolute nothing and naught,
consequently he is in that moment a new existence –
there must be with him a new service.
Consequently,
even if yesterday morning he read the Shema,
today in the morning he is a new existence,
having just been created anew –
he must now read the Shema anew in a new manner,
as if until now he had not read it!
The second type in the service of man is analogous to the moon:
Service in a way of novelty and in a way of ascending in holiness,
so that new matters come to him in his service.
And also in this there is the instruction from the first Rosh Chodesh
(which is connected with the course of the moon)
after the month of Tishrei –
that now begins a new year in which "the main thing is the deed" of the order of service in a new way and in a way of ascending in holiness
(analogous to the moon).
That is,
that the service in a manner of novelty and ascent in holiness must be not only once a year or once a month,
or once a day and so forth –
but a constant service,
for "we ascend in holiness"79 is a constant commandment.
Furthermore:
There are several constant commandments,
such as love of Hashem80 and so forth –
but love of Hashem is expressed in practice twice a day,
in the Shema of the morning and the Shema of the evening;
בק"ש של שחרית וק"ש של ערבית;
however, the commandment of "we ascend in holiness" is a constant commandment in every moment of the day in all matters of service that a Jew does.
And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said81 that "Torah scholars have no rest, etc., as it is stated82 'They go from strength to strength, He will appear before God in Zion'."
And every Jew has the potential to be a Torah scholar,
consequently there must be with him the "they go from strength to strength"83 in a manner of "they have no rest",
i.e., constantly ascending from strength to strength. For if he rests for a moment, that is not "they have no rest".
And the explanation of this
(as every Jew has the potential to be a Torah scholar):
When one asks a Jew who is an ignoramus whether he wants to be a Torah scholar,
he will usually answer that he is already a Torah scholar!...
When one asks him, however, on the day of Shabbat,
when even an ignoramus does not lie84,
he will tell the truth,
that he is not a Torah scholar,
but he certainly wants to be a Torah scholar.
And since he wants it –
"in the place where a person's will is, there he is found"*84,
consequently he is already at the level of a Torah scholar,
and especially since he has the promise that "if one toiled and found, believe"71,
he need only toil and he will attain it,
and not only according to his toil but in a manner of "and found" –
it is a matter of lacking time, not a matter of lacking action85.
And in particular, this does not refer to him needing to toil in order to receive something that does not belong to him,
but rather this refers to Torah,
which "Moshe commanded us, an inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov"86,
it is found with him
(and with every Jew)
in his "pocket",
he only needs to "put his hand into his pocket" and take it out from there.
That is, he only needs to sit down to learn,
he will certainly receive the entire matter also in a revealed way,
and it is a rule that "whatever is ready to be reaped is considered as already reaped".
It follows that with every Jew,
even an ignoramus,
there is something of the movement of a Torah scholar.
In order to be an actual Torah scholar in practice –
he needs to have ordination and be a scholar,
which requires time and toil:
but the movement of a Torah scholar is already present with him now,
because he has the potential to be a Torah scholar and "whatever is ready etc.".
Consequently, with him there is the matter of "they shall go from strength to strength" in the manner of "they have no rest" which exists by Torah scholars. Until that through this "they shall go from strength to strength" he comes to "appear before Hashem in Tzion".
That is, he is not in a situation where first he hears
(by hearing,
not by sight)
what is being spoken,
afterwards he goes to rest. Afterwards he considers himself in it,
afterwards he thinks how this is suited to him and what he needs to do about it. If he conducts himself in such a manner and he goes to rest,
he is not in a state of "they have no rest";
איז ער ניט אין א מצב פון אין להם מנוחה;
in order to be a Torah scholar –
one cannot rest,
rather it must be "they shall go from strength to strength" in the manner of "they have no rest"!
These two types of service mentioned above –
constant service
(analogous to the sun),
connected with Shabbos,
and service in a manner of renewal and ascent in holiness
(analogous to the moon),
connected with Rosh Chodesh –
correspond to the two paths brought in the Mishnah87:
"a plastered cistern that loses not a drop" –
constant service without change. And "a spring that grows ever stronger" –
service in a manner of renewal and constant strengthening and ascent in holiness.
And the matter that the service in a manner of renewal must be in a constant manner,
"they have no rest" –
is also seen in the matter of "a spring that grows ever stronger",
that it is constantly in a manner of strengthening.
In this there is a "big question" to which one does not pay attention88:
The praise and virtue of "a plastered cistern that loses not a drop" is seemingly only a one-time thing:
If he is like a "cistern",
and moreover a "plastered cistern that loses not a drop",
he holds within himself all the drops that entered into him,
and afterwards he no longer needs to have any service –
so how can one therefore count his praise of Rabbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus in the present,
and therefore call him "Rabbi" in the present because of his service which was seemingly only in the past?
The praise of "a spring that grows ever stronger" is a constant thing –
that he is constantly "like a spring that grows ever stronger";
אז ער איז שטענדיק "כמעין המתגבר";
but "a plastered cistern that loses not a drop" is seemingly only a one-time thing.
From this it is proven,
that "a plastered cistern that loses not a drop" is also a constant service,
because the virtue in this does not consist only in that he has a good memory and remembers what he once learned,
but he also reviews it,
and conducts himself like the early Chassidim in order to effect that "his Torah be preserved"89.
It follows that there are two modes of service –
"a plastered cistern that loses not a drop" and "a spring that grows ever stronger",
which correspond to the two types of service mentioned above analogous to the sun and analogous to the moon.
And these are the two modes of service that are learned from Shabbos
(in our case –
the first Shabbos after Tishrei)
and Rosh Chodesh
(the first Rosh Chodesh after Tishrei).
And in this year, Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh come together on the same day –
so this is not in a manner that part of the day is Shabbos and part is Rosh Chodesh,
rather every single moment of the day is both Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh.
And this teaches that both services of "a plastered cistern that loses not a drop" and "a spring that grows ever stronger" must come together.
That is:
Even though the two modes of service –
"a spring that grows ever stronger" and "a cistern that does not lose a drop" –
are opposites. Moreover:
The true essence of overcoming
("a spring that grows ever stronger")
is specifically when he is losing something,
and the loss and deficiency then bring him to a greater overcoming to compensate.
This is as explained in the discourses of Parshat Noach in connection with the flood,
"many waters," that through concealment and obstruction and a hindering thing –
there comes a greater overcoming, etc.90
Nevertheless, in this year Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh come together on the same day,
which teaches that both services of "a cistern that does not lose a drop" and "a spring that grows ever stronger" must come together.
And to perform both services with delight,
which is the essence of Shabbat –
"and you shall call the Shabbat a delight"91,
for delight is a matter of rest and absence of change
[connected also with our parshah –
"Noach",
meaning rest,
"this one will comfort us" (and not "Menachem"*91)],
a constant service,
and together with this there must be the service of Rosh Chodesh –
renewal and they have no rest.
And even though they are opposite services –
but it is said to a Jew,
that there are auspicious times when he is then given the power to do both things together.
And as mentioned above,
that from this power in "once a year"
(of Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh together)
to do both services together –
the power is drawn forth until the next time when there will be the same arrangement.
And may it be His will that from this matter of the new month and the Shabbat in our deeds and our service –
we should come to the [fulfillment of] "And it shall be that from new moon to its new moon and from Shabbat to its Shabbat, all flesh shall come to prostrate themselves before Me, says Hashem"
(as it states in today's haftarah92),
in the true and complete redemption,
and the third Beit HaMikdash will be built,
may it be built speedily in our days,
Amen, may it be His will.
Maamar (like a sicha)
beginning "And it shall be that from new moon to its new moon etc."
It is also customary to study a verse from our parshah together with Rashi's commentary,
and a matter in the notes of my father on the Zohar of our parshah.
In our parshah, chapter 9, verse 16, there is a Rashi commentary full of questions like a pomegranate,
and nevertheless none of the commentators
(that I have seen)
address this Rashi!
In the verse it states,
that the Almighty says:
"And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will see it, to remember the everlasting covenant between G-d and every living soul etc." Rashi quotes the words "between G-d and every living soul" and explains:
"Between the attribute of justice above and between you,
(and Rashi brings a proof for this:)
For it should have written 'between Me'
(and not "between G-d")
and between every living soul,
but this is its midrashic interpretation: when the attribute of justice comes
[which "G-d" refers to,
as Rashi explained earlier in Parshat Bereishit93 that "G-d" refers to the attribute of justice]
to prosecute against you, I see the sign and remember."
One must understand:
A) Rashi apparently explains only the word "G-d" of the verse –
why does he quote in the opening words also the words "between G-d and between every living soul"? Even if Rashi wants to quote another word for completeness of the matter,
the word "between"
(G-d) is sufficient,
but what is the relevance of also quoting "and between every living soul"?
B) Why does Rashi in his commentary change from the language of the verse "between every living soul" and write "between you"?
Because as we see in the preceding verses94
(regarding the covenant of the bow)
that both expressions "between you and between every living soul" appear,
from which it is understood that they are two separate matters –
now, since here in the verse it only says "between every living soul",
how does Rashi change and write "between you"?!
Moreover:
Further on in this very commentary Rashi writes in the language of the verse "it should have written 'between Me and between every living soul'"!
C) "Between Me" in this verse simply refers to "G-d",
because in the entire section regarding the flood and its aftermath, only the name G-d is stated regarding the Almighty,
consequently one must say that also "between Me" refers to "G-d" –
now what is the precision "for it should have written 'between Me'" and since it says "G-d" Rashi derives that "when the attribute of justice comes etc.";
היינט וואס איז דער דיוק "שהי' לו לכתוב ביני" און וויבאלד אז עס שטייט "אלקים" לערנט ארויס רש"י אז "כשתבוא מדת הדין וכו'";
even if it had only said "between Me",
one would also have known that this refers to "G-d",
the attribute of justice?
Why does Rashi say "this is its midrash"?
Rashi's subject is the plain meaning of Scripture. And even though Rashi says earlier in Parshat Bereishit95 that sometimes he brings "aggadah that settles the words of Scripture" –
Nevertheless, his commentary on this verse is seemingly forced and understood in the manner of the plain meaning,
as Rashi himself writes here that his proof is from the verse itself –
"It should have written etc."?
The entire length in Rashi is not understood:
If Rashi had only written that "between Elokim and every living soul" means "between the attribute of judgment above and you"
(with the proof "that it should have written etc."),
one would have already understood on his own that although there is the attribute of judgment
("Elokim"),
through seeing the rainbow the Holy One, blessed be He, remembers His covenant,
as it is stated in the verse "And the rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will see it to remember the everlasting covenant between Elokim and every living soul" –
Why does Rashi then add "When the attribute of judgment comes to prosecute against you, I see the sign and remember",
it is seemingly the same thing that is stated earlier?
In addition to all this, one must understand:
The "blatant difficulty":
The entire verse is seemingly superfluous. Because previously it already states everything that is stated in this verse:
That the Holy One, blessed be He, made a rainbow as a sign of the covenant so that there should not be another flood,
and it states between whom the covenant is –
"between Me and you and between every living soul that is with you for everlasting generations",
with all the details
(both "between you" and "between every living soul",
not as it states in our verse only "between every living soul") –
So what does this verse add?!
And Rashi does not comment on this at all!
To this comes additionally the greatest "blatant difficulty":
The five-year-old seemingly does not understand what Rashi's question is "that it should have written 'between Me and between every living soul'"
(and from the fact that it states again "Elokim" we derive that "when the attribute of judgment comes etc.") –
Because earlier in Parshat Bereishit he already learned about this and there was no question:
In connection with Lemech's speech,96
regarding which there is no practical difference
(and even if there is, it is a rare thing97),
previously there was no necessity98 to explain that this is because "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus".
That is, as mentioned,97 that as long as it is not forced,
Rashi does not explain,
and especially an explanation that is not so smooth.
Previously there was no necessity98 to explain that this is because "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus". And the five-year-old understands99 that Lemech said "wives of Lemech"
(not "my wives"),
and the Torah relates this
(although it is a duplication of language),
because Lemech wanted to have a stronger effect on them as above,
and the Torah relates this in order to emphasize Lemech's effort.
And the five-year-old understands99 that the Holy One, blessed be He, said "between Elokim",
in order to emphasize that even "when the attribute of judgment comes to prosecute against you, I see the sign and remember".
And also here in the Zohar there is an explanation100 on the words "great mountains"
(regarding the bones of the people of the generation of the flood).
My father explains101 in the notes on the Zohar,
that the subject of the "great mountains" is "the kings of Tohu",
who are in the category of "coarseness and haughtiness like high mountains etc." And Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda were "corresponding to Zeir Anpin of rectification of holiness,
and opposite them and corresponding to them are the great mountains, which are the sparks of Zeir Anpin of Tohu".
He explains this according to Kabbalah
(and in the continuation of the explanation he brings (and compares it to) a further story in the Zohar ("later on page 63a") "It was said: Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yossi were walking on the road, they encountered these mountains of Kardu, they saw marks, cracks in the road that were from the days of the flood etc.",
and "mountains of Kardu" is "the mountains of Ararat"*102,
as stated "And the ark rested etc. upon the mountains of Ararat"103,
and he explains this according to Kabbalah],
relying that one will understand on his own how this is according to Chassidus.
One must understand:
What kind of matter is this at all, that two great Tannaim went walking among the bones of the people of the generation of the flood?!
The place of a Torah scholar is in the study hall,
and in a city of sages,
"the place of Torah"
(as it states in the Baraisa of "Kinyan Torah"103),
and especially when it speaks about great Tannaim like Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda
(as is related in their praise in the revealed aspect of Torah,
and particularly in the glosses on the Zohar) –
now what is the significance in this, that instead of being in the study hall, Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda went out and strolled among "great mountains,"
among the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood,
and inside one bone –
they specifically went...
three hundred cubits
(300 steps)?
And especially since these bones are impure. The dead of gentiles are indeed not impure with impurity of a tent according to the opinion of Rashbi104 –
the author of the Zohar –
but these Tannaim went inside the bone of one of the people of the generation of the Flood,
this is the impurity of contact, which is impure according to all opinions105!
B) Torah is from the term "instruction."106 Every matter that is in the Torah must be an instruction for a Jew in the service of Hashem. What is the instruction from this story, that Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda went among the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood,
and that inside one bone they went 300 steps?!
And as will be explained below.
Here is the place to note and add in connection with this, regarding what has been spoken many times concerning the matter of the unity of Israel.
Coming from the festivals in the month of Tishrei, there is a special emphasis and special powers regarding this matter of unity:
On the festival of Sukkos, one receives power for this, that "all of Israel are fit to dwell in one sukkah."107
In addition to this:
The mitzvah of "And you shall take for yourselves on the first day..."108 the four species,
also emphasizes the matter of unity,
because in addition to this that each species by itself of the four species emphasizes unity,109
one must also take all four species and make from them one bundle,110
one mitzvah,
"and they shall all make one bundle to do Your will with a perfect heart."111
In this, two opposites at once are emphasized:
It is not the simple meaning that one makes from all four species one thing in a manner that the difference between them is not recognizable,
rather it must be recognizable that they are four separate species. If one would take four esrogim, he would not fulfill the mitzvah. And together with this, one must make from all four species one bundle,
one mitzvah.
And accordingly, it is also understood regarding the unity of Jews,
who correspond to the four species.110
The matter of unity comes out even more on Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah,
as explained in the words of our Sages, of blessed memory,112 regarding Shemini Atzeres,
that "one bull, one ram"113 that is offered up is "corresponding to Israel,"
and this is like a parable of "children114 who take leave of their father, and he says to them, 'Your separation is difficult for me; stay one more day.'" And in the language of the Gemara:115
"A parable: A king of flesh and blood said to his servants, 'Make for me a great feast'
(the seventy bulls that are offered during the days of Sukkos),
He said to his beloved, 'Make for me one small feast, so that I may derive pleasure from you'"
(the single bull on Shemini Atzeres, corresponding to the unique nation).
Why should the Most High think that there will be "your separation" –
is it not
(so to speak)
"suspicious of the innocent"?
Rather, the Most High created man such that "their opinions are not equal,"116
and in addition to this, each person has his unique place that he needs to refine,
consequently there is a division among Jews.
Even in the time of Shlomo,
"And Shlomo sat on the throne of Hashem,"117
when there was completeness of peace and tranquility,
it states118 "And Yehuda and Israel dwelt securely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, all the days of Shlomo."
That is, there was the division of a vine and fig tree, etc.,
and in addition this was "every man under his vine and under his fig tree."
One sees from this that there must be division among people. And each one should be in his place
(not in the place of his fellow).
Consequently, the intention is not to nullify the division,
because the division must remain.
One must, however, ensure that "your separation is difficult for me,"
that is, that although there is a division among Jews,
there should not be between them a distance, and certainly not a split,
through this, that each one in his place and in his matter,
has the same intention –
to fulfill the will of Hashem in his place and in his particular matter,
for then, in the place where a person's thought is, there he is found –
all Jews find themselves in one place,
even though their service is in separate places and there is division among them.
It is brought up that in the division, unity should be heard.
Now, division and unity are seemingly opposites –
the Mitteler Rebbe explains
(in Toras Chayim specifically in Parshas Noach119,
our parshah)
that on the contrary:
division comes specifically from the simplicity of the Essence.
How does one guard against "it is hard for Me your separation"? Through that which "stay yet one more day" and one eats together a meal of one bull,
as follows.
Based on this (that there must be division among Jews,
but one must guard that there should not be "your separation",
distance and division,
rather all should have one intention)
one will understand the matter of the "small meal"
(of the one bull)
that is conducted on Shemini Atzeres in order to guard against "it is hard for Me your separation",
For seemingly:
the seven days of Sukkos before Shemini Atzeres, Jews were together,
together with the Most High,
"and you shall rejoice before Hashem your God seven days"108,
and they ate a meal together,
so how is it that this did not yet guard against "it is hard for Me your separation",
and one guards against it specifically when Shemini Atzeres comes and one offers one bull,
one eats together a "small meal",
"and we will roll120 I and you in what you will find etc."?
The explanation of this is:
The intention is,
as above,
not to nullify the division among Jews,
because the Most High desires that there should be division,
and each one should refine his particular place. Rather, in the division itself one must bring about that each one should have one intention –
to fulfill the will of Hashem,
and then they become united.
Therefore,
in order to bring about the unification, it is not sufficient that one only celebrate the festival together,
as an example of eating a meal together,
which is connected with division,
seventy bulls,
rather one must have that one eat a meal connected with a singular matter,
one bull,
which is offered for the sake of all of Israel
(the "unique nation"),
which unites them all together.
Not like the offering of seven lambs,
in which it is emphasized that one offers the lambs specifically as seven lambs,
not as one.
So too the lighting of the seven branches of the menorah,
which emphasizes that there is a division of seven pipes.
However, the offering of one bull emphasizes that there is only the Most High and "His beloved"
(Jews),
not as Jews are divided into seventy types121,
or six hundred thousand,
and in this itself six hundred thousand particulars etc.122 –
rather as they are one entity.
And this "one bull" is eaten in a meal,
and it becomes blood and flesh like his flesh122 of all Jews who eat from it,
consequently it effects upon all Jews that in their blood and flesh like their flesh, the unity of the "one bull" is heard.
[So too as the Rebbe Maharash explains123 that when one eats matzah on Pesach, one eats Elokus,
Essence and Being –
so he writes!
That is, when one eats matzah on Pesach, Elokus becomes "blood and flesh like his flesh". He eats "food of faith"124 (the matzah itself is a food of faith),
faith becomes "blood and flesh like his flesh"].
Therefore, the eating of the "one bull" gives strength that after Shemini Atzeres,
when Jews go apart from each other, each to his place to do his service,
when then the division among Jews is seen –
there is also heard in the division the "one bull",
the one intention that all Jews have,
and in the place where a person's thought is, there he is found125,
consequently they are truly all one thing within the division.
In continuation126 of this, it is a correct thing and most correct that coming from the month of Tishrei and from Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah,
until the seventh of Cheshvan inclusive
– which the seventh of Cheshvan contains both matters:
it is the conclusion and seal of the festival127,
the conclusion of the month of Tishrei,
and the beginning of the month of Cheshvan when the service of all of Israel in his place begins
(division) –
one should make special gatherings
(at least one gathering),
for men separately,
women separately and children separately,
where one will gather together in "one group",
and there make an accounting and summary of what was done in the month of Tishrei.
And even if an enemy has already made a gathering for this Shabbos,
on the contrary:
One who has one hundred wants two hundred; one who has two hundred wants four hundred128. And this is even according to the nature of the animal soul,
that if one has two hundred and does not want more,
something is not right.
All the more so that this is the nature of the divine soul in matters of holiness.
Consequently, even if one has already made a gathering with the purpose of love and unity of Israel,
one must now,
until the 11th of Cheshvan inclusive,
do it with greater vigor and strength.
One should make the gatherings in every place,
whether in the Holy Land,
whether outside the Land,
for there is in this something that is not in this in connection with the emphasis that must be on love and unity of Israel. Because that which was spoken earlier129 about love and unity of Israel is not
(as those who think it is)
only for certain individuals,
but it pertains to everyone, each according to his matter,
And each one should be a "spreader that causes to spread" especially in matters connected with love and unity of Israel. Until he becomes more than a "spreader that causes to spread,"
because he does it as an emissary of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the leader of our generation,
consequently, "a servant of a king is a king"130,
and he has in this the power of all the sages and great ones of Israel until Moses our teacher,
for the extension of Moses is in every generation131,
until the leader of our generation, the Rebbe, my father-in-law.
Consequently, one should make the gatherings in every place,
even also in "the distant islands" as it says in today's haftarah*131
[and there*131 it also says about "drawers of the bow,"
which is in the manner and likeness of what is discussed in our parshah about a bow].
The intention of the gatherings is first and foremost –
the matter of love and unity of Israel,
as mentioned that at this gathering one must assemble in a manner that all those gathered become one "single group,"
in which two things are emphasized simultaneously:
"Group" can be said at least about three,
or five or more.
That is, it is a matter of division. And together with this, one says that it should be a "single group."
And each gathering should be "in a multitude of people is the King's glory"132,
with as many people as possible. For also in this both things are emphasized:
It is "in a multitude of people,"
a multiplicity of division,
and together with this the "multitude of people" is with one intention and purpose –
"the King's glory."
Therefore, one must see to gather as many Jews as possible at the gatherings,
not only three
(the minimum for a group),
but thirty and more.
And as soon as one will merely exert oneself in this, one will certainly succeed and more than one expected,
as has been seen in the past that those who exerted themselves in all matters connected with spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings, etc., succeeded more than they themselves expected.
The matter of the gatherings for the sake of love and unity of Israel has an additional special emphasis on this Shabbos:
The maamar "Hitchaltzu Mei'itchem Anashim" of the Rebbe
(the Maharash)
of blessed memory133,
נ"ע 133,
which there134 discusses at length about love and unity of Israel135, the Rebbe of blessed memory said twice
(in the year 5659)
as it says in the date in the "header" of the maamar:
Simchas Torah and Parshas Noach 5659136.
And since "these days are remembered and performed"137,
on Shabbos Parshas Noach of this year, the matters that were on Shabbos Parshas Noach in the year 5659 are repeated,
one now has a special power and assistance to act in love and unity of Israel.
True, the verse "Hitchaltzu Mei'itchem Anashim" is in Parshas Mattos138,
and the Alter Rebbe explains it in Likkutei Torah*138 –
but since the Rebbe of blessed memory said the maamar
(also)
on Shabbos Parshas Noach 5659 and in it explained at length the greatness of the matter of love of Israel and unity of Israel,
it is understood that this gives additional help and support to carry out these matters on this Shabbos Parshas Noach,
in addition to "the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him"139,
and the help of all the leaders,
and the help of the pure days in the continuation of the month of Tishrei.
The world always wants a novelty,
so one will also connect the gatherings with a novel thing:
In addition to the gatherings that will be held in all places,
also in Kfar Chabad and Nachalat Har Chabad in the Holy Land
(and especially since now there is already certainly among them the matter of true love and unity of Israel,
as discussed above129) –
the gatherings should also be held in the "four lands" known in the Holy Land,
Jerusalem the holy city,
Hebron the holy city,
Zefat and Tiberias140.
It is understood that to hold the gathering in Hebron, one must obtain permission from those who manage the order and the security personnel there,
and the gathering should be held exactly according to the instructions of the security personnel
(where and when to hold it),
and not in a wild manner, Heaven forbid,
for we must have that it should come about in the order of the world. In addition to that which is connected with security in its simple sense.
And likewise, gatherings should be held in all places where it is possible to hold them in the Holy Land,
and in places where a permit is needed –
first obtain a permit for it.
In order to connect the gatherings in all places with a physical object from the farbrengen that takes place in the "place where Torah is magnified" and "place where prayer is magnified"*140 where my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, was during the last ten years of his life in this world,

and the farbrengen is on Shabbat Parshat Noach, which is a beginning, and thereby the gatherings are connected
(as above, that the discourse "Hitchaltzu" is especially connected with Shabbat Parshat Noach),

The mashkeh for the gathering in Jerusalem should be taken by a rabbi from there,

The mashkeh for Hebron will be given to a rabbi from the Vaad Rabbanim of Chabad.
For Zefat –
the mashkeh will be given to those who lead "Kiryat Chabad" in Zefat;

that we should reach all Jews from "your heads, your tribes" to "your woodcutters" and "your water drawers"13. On the contrary:
primarily we must work with those who are not found within and within the innermost.
May it be His will that very soon the prophecy with which the Rambam concludes and seals all of his Laws of Fasts be fulfilled –

The explanation in Rashi's commentary:
Why did the verse repeat again about the covenant of the rainbow –
this is no question for a five-year-old studying Scripture,
because he knows by himself that a matter which is very relevant to him and which is important to him,
he repeats in order to emphasize it further.
And similarly, as the five-year-old already learned earlier at the beginning of the parshah,
that even though Hashem told Noach once that he should bring into the ark "from all living things, two each"144,
Hashem repeated it again a few verses later145,
"from the animals that are not clean, two each" –
because due to the importance of the matter, one emphasizes it by saying it again.
And even though the second time that Hashem said it, additional details come that He did not say the first time –
He did not, however, need to say the command the first time,
and say it only the second time;
און זאגן עס נאר דעם צווייטן מאל;
from the fact that He says it twice, it is understood that regarding an important matter, one may repeat a matter twice
(and (this is not only because of the new details,
but because) the principle145 that a matter is repeated a second time for things that are newly added in it –
the five-year-old has not yet learned).
[In the plain sense of Scripture, one has not yet learned the principle146 that "the verse repeated it to indicate it is essential",
but even without this, the five-year-old understands on his own and from what he learned in the portion of Noach that an important matter may be repeated].
That is, even though the five-year-old knows that every word in the Torah is tremendous and one learns from it many matters,
nevertheless, an important matter that needs emphasis, the Torah may say it more than once.
Regarding the covenant of the rainbow, Rashi earlier147 explained to the five-year-old that "Noach was worried about engaging in procreation until the Holy One, blessed be He, promised him not to destroy the world again",
and therefore Hashem gave the sign of the rainbow. From this it is seen that the rainbow is a very important matter, and specifically this calmed Noach,
but without the rainbow, Noach would have worried,
as is the nature of a person after he sees a great destruction like the flood.
Therefore, there is no question why Hashem repeated again to Noach regarding the sign of the rainbow,
because with this, Hashem further emphasized the matter in order to further calm Noach.
The explanation
(at least briefly,
so as not to trouble the audience)
of Rashi's precision,
that in our verse it says "between Elokim" and not "between Me"
("for it should have written 'between Me' etc."),
even though earlier we find that it says "And Lemech said to his wives etc. wives of Lemech" and not "my wives"
[incidentally:
from "wives of Lemech" there is also an example (from an earlier verse in the Torah) of the aforementioned matter (above) that a verse repeats a thing twice),
and likewise further in the portion of Vayeira "And Hashem rained etc. from Hashem from the heavens",
and there Rashi says "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus":
We spoke several times148 regarding the principle in Rashi's commentary
(which is derived from Rashi in various places,
and it is also understood on its own),
that he does not answer a question until it reaches the place where the question arises. This is also obvious in the plain sense,
that it is contrary to common sense to answer a question before one knows that there is a question.
Likewise, it is also understood,
that as long as it is not necessary to explain a particular interpretation in a verse,
Rashi does not explain it,
and he relies that one should learn the verse in its plain sense. Especially if the interpretation is not simple –
Rashi certainly does not explain it until such an interpretation is necessary.
Accordingly, one will also understand the difference between (a)
the verse in the portion of Bereishis –
"And Lemech said to his wives etc. wives of Lemech", (b)
the verse in our portion –
"between Elokim", and (c)
the verse in the portion of Vayeira –
"And Hashem rained etc. from Hashem from the heavens":
Until the verse in the portion of Vayeira, Rashi has no necessity to say that "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus". Therefore, he does not say it regarding "wives of Lemech",
and not regarding "between Elokim";
און ניט בא "בין אלקים";
but when it comes to the portion of Vayeira, Rashi is compelled to explain thus,
so he explains thus, and then he already says that this is also the interpretation of "wives of Lemech". And the explanation of this:
The verse "And Lemech said to his wives, etc. 'Wives of Lemech'" is not necessarily [proof] that "it is the way of the verses to speak thus,"
because regarding a five-year-old there is no difficulty why the verse relates that when speaking with his wives, Lemech said "wives of Lemech"
(not "my wives")
even though previously it states that the speech of Lemech
("And Lemech said to his wives") –
because Lemech wanted to effect something upon his wives, a matter in which they held opposite [to his view]
(as Rashi explains there),
consequently he emphasized it more strongly by saying "wives of Lemech"
(and not "my wives").
Therefore, in addition to what the verse says "And Lemech said to his wives," it repeats the matter again that Lemech said to his wives "wives of Lemech,"
in order to emphasize the effort of Lemech to effect upon them the matter that he wanted.
And especially as one would say in cheder that Lemech was a "Lemech." And in addition he needed to effect upon his wives,
and effect upon them in a matter that they held opposite to what he wanted, etc. –
it is therefore understandable what kind of effort Lemech needed to have in this. Therefore Lemech said to his wives "wives of Lemech"
(not "my wives"),
and therefore he also said to them twice "hear my voice" and "give ear to my speech" –
and would that these two times Lemech,
(being a "Lemech")
would effect upon them...
All this is said regarding a verse in connection with the speech of Lemech:
When it comes, however, to the verse in our portion where it says "between God"
(not "between Me")
even though previously it says "And God said" –
one cannot bring a proof that it must be thus because it is thus by Lemech,
because it is understood that one cannot bring a proof from the speech of Lemech,
a flesh and blood [being],
to the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He:
Lemech, being a flesh and blood [being],
needed to have a great effort to effect upon his wives, etc.,
therefore he said "wives of Lemech"
(not "my wives")
even though previously it says "And Lemech said to his wives";
כאטש פריער שטייט "ויאמר למך לנשיו";
but the Most High does not need to come to this.
Consequently, the question
(of Rashi)
on that which is written here "between God":
Since previously it says "And God said" –
"should it not have written 'between Me,' etc." and not "between God"?
[That which in Parshat Noach there is a repetition in the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He,
that the Most High said to Noach twice the command that he should take from the animals and fowl, etc. (above, section 32) –
regarding a five-year-old studying Mikra there is no difficulty,
because he learns a matter in Chumash with proper attention.
A Jew with a white beard thinks that his matter is to be innovative in Rambam,
consequently when he learns Chumash he learns it quickly because he learns Chumash with Rashi out of obligation! –
Thus it is written in Shulchan Aruch,
and there is a directive of our Nesi'im...
And consequently he does not pay proper attention to it;
ובמילא איז ער דערצו ניט משים לב כדבעי;
but a five-year-old learns it with full attention. –
The five-year-old knows from the verses that the first command to Noach regarding the animals, etc., was at the time of the command regarding the building of the ark,
but the second time the Most High told him before their entry into the ark,
which was 120 years after the command regarding the building of the ark. And especially that for 120 years Noach was occupied with the building of the ark,
and he needed to answer the questions that people asked him "What is this to you?",
and answer in a manner that he would effect upon them to do teshuvah. Consequently, there is no wonder in the simple meaning of the verse why the Most High repeated the command].
And from that which in this verse it says "between God" and not "between Me," Rashi proves
that the verse thereby comes to teach that "when the attribute of judgment
(to which 'God' refers)
comes to prosecute against you, I see the sign and remember."
Because, as discussed above,
since "Noach was worried, etc.,"
the Most High needed to calm him,
therefore the Most High emphasizes again and adds with greater strength to Noach that –
"And the bow shall be in the cloud, and I will see it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and between every living soul,"
"between the attribute of judgment above and between you...
When the attribute of judgment comes to prosecute against you, I see the sign and remember."
The aforementioned
(Section 33)
is applicable to say regarding the verse in Parshat Bereishit "And Lemech said to his wives etc. Wives of Lemech",
and the aforementioned
(in Section 34)
is applicable to say regarding the verse in our parshah "between Elokim";
איז שייך זאגן אין דעם פסוק בפרשתנו "בין אלקים";
but when one comes to the verse "And Hashem rained etc. from Hashem from the heavens" in Parshat Vayeira –
one has no simple explanation why it should say twice and the second time it should not say "from Him",
Because there it is not about emphasizing an important matter twice
(like the promise of the Supreme One to Noach regarding the covenant of the rainbow,
because "Noach was concerned"),
or about wanting to effect a matter
(like by Lemech),
or about a command that is repeated after 120 years
(like the command to bring from every animal etc. into the ark),
rather here it is told as a narrative of events –
"And Hashem rained etc. from Hashem from the heavens".
So this compels Rashi to explain,
that what it says "And Hashem rained etc. from Hashem from the heavens" and not "from Him" is –
because "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus".
And since in that verse Rashi is compelled to explain thus,
Rashi there also explains that thus is the explanation of the verse "Wives of Lemech",
"and He did not say 'my wives'",
that this is because "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus":
When one studied the verse "Wives of Lemech" in Parshat Bereishit,
and one had not yet studied the verse in Parshat Vayeira –
there was no compulsion to explain that what the verse says "Wives of Lemech"
(not "my wives")
is because of "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus",
because there one had a simple rationale
(as above section 33);
(כנ"ל סל"ג);
But when one comes to the verse "And Hashem rained etc. from Hashem from the heavens" in Parshat Vayeira and Rashi is compelled to explain that "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus",
he likewise explains by "Wives of Lemech" –
because after all the aforementioned explanations why there it says "Wives of Lemech" and not "my wives",
the question still remains:
True, indeed, that Lemech said "Wives of Lemech"
(in order to effect upon his wives),
but why does the Torah need to write this?
Simply, in its place in Parshat Bereishit one can learn that since the Torah is the Torah of truth,
it tells as the truth is,
that Lemech said "Wives of Lemech"
[in the Torah itself it is not possible to "copy" the words of Lemech and write "etc."...].
Consequently, when one learns the verse in Parshat Bereishit
(before one comes to Parshat Vayeira),
one can explain that Lemech said "Wives of Lemech" simply,
because he wanted to effect upon his wives etc.
On the other hand:
The Torah does not tell everything that Lemech said in his lifetime. Lemech lived many years,
he certainly said many things,
nevertheless the Torah does not tell everything that he said,
the Torah tells only the things that are relevant,
but the things that are not relevant and there is no compulsion to tell them,
the Torah does not tell them. Consequently, the Torah did not need to tell that Lemech said
(also)
"Wives of Lemech".
In Parshat Bereishit this is not such a difficulty
(as above),
but after when it comes in Parshat Vayeira and there Rashi has a compulsion
(from the verse there)
to explain that "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus" –
he also explains that thus is the explanation in "Wives of Lemech" in Parshat Bereishit,
and therefore there is no question why the Torah also tells the detail that Lemech said "Wives of Lemech",
because "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus".
And regarding this Rashi there also brings the proofs that "it is the way of Scriptures to speak thus" from David and Achashverosh.
And one may add to all this,
and give to you and may you become wiser.
At this gathering there are those who could not come here during the month of Tishrei due to their involvement in spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings in their places;
בא דער התוועדות געפינען זיך אזוינע וועלכע האבן האבן ניט געקענט קומען אהער במשך חודש תשרי מצד זייער התעסקות אין הפצת היהדות והפצת המעינות במקומות שלהם;
but since they wanted to participate in a gathering connected to the month of Tishrei, they came to the gathering of Parshat Noach,
which is the conclusion of the month of Tishrei.
Just as it is the custom to distribute mashkeh on Motzaei Simchat Torah,
which this year was on Motzaei Shabbat Bereishit,
and they were not there then –
they will be given mashkeh at the conclusion of this gathering.
That this is a matter of "great is the feast that brings close,"
accompanied also by the matter of words of Torah that were spoken,
and the matter of prayer that will be through singing the melody "He will build the Beis HaMikdash, etc." That these are the three pillars,
Torah, service
(prayer)
and acts of kindness,
upon which the world stands—
"small world," this is man,
and the large world in its simple sense. Likewise the gatherings that will be made—
one should connect them with these two pillars—
Torah,
prayer and charity.
And the drink is given to them as participation and in order to further add to their activities in their places—
in spreading Judaism in general and in spreading the wellsprings outward in particular,
through which "the Master has come," the King Messiah,
And in particular through that which one adds in all this with greater vigor and strength—
addition in Torah and mitzvos in general and in spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings outward.
That the matter
(of engaging in spreading the wellsprings outward in all places)
is also connected with the explanation in the Zohar
(as follows, section 3).
To this:
לזל
The explanation in the note on the Zohar:
The father explains in the note that the matter of the "great mountains" to which Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda arrived while walking on the road,
are the "kings of Tohu,
who were in the aspect of coarseness and haughtiness like high mountains, etc.,"
specifically the kings of Zeir Anpin of Tohu. And Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda correspond to Zeir Anpin of rectification of holiness,
"and opposite them and corresponding to them are the great mountains, the six extremities of Zeir Anpin of Tohu."
"And that they encountered there the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood,
who were also from the aspect of Tohu,
and were in the intensity of great gevuros and judgments
(like the mountains that were great),
this is 'bones,' meaning bones,
this is that their bones were large,
a bone that is hard alludes to harsh judgment, etc.,
and these are the gevuros and judgments of Tohu, etc."
"And this is that Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Chiya were astounded,
because they saw bones that are from the aspect of Tohu,
therefore they were astounded,
'astounded' is from the word Tohu,
and the letters of Tohu, etc.
And this is that they said that the generation of the Flood were not afraid of judgment,
because they themselves were in the aspect of very great judgments and gevuros,
therefore they were not afraid of judgment,
and they do not desire the aspect of chassadim of rectification."
The lesson from this for each and every one:
Every "I" can elevate regarding all matters of the world.
So much so that even if there exist in the world undesirable matters,
like the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood,
as explained in tractate Sanhedrin and in Rashi at the end of the portion of Noach,
the greatness of the descent of the generation of the Flood,
so much so that they had a very strong force,
as one sees from that after the entire destruction of the Flood that "He wiped out all existence that was upon the face of the earth,"
nevertheless the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood remained in the world,
that a bone in general is a hard thing,
alluding to harsh judgments,
and in particular a very large bone over which one walked three paces,
that this is all from their root in the aspect of Tohu,
which fell downward and became an undesirable matter with a very great force—
even in this an "I" can elevate!
First and foremost through that which he engages in the study of Torah in these matters concerning the people of the generation of the Flood,
concerning their force and great judgments and gevuros, etc.,
as Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Chiya did,
that thereby
(through the study of Torah in a specific matter)
one elevates that matter in which one engages,
as our sages said, "Whoever engages in the Torah of etc., it is as if he offered etc."
Thus there is also a particular lesson from this in the service of each and every one
(in addition to the aforementioned lesson—
in connection with the study of Torah in these matters):
The great force of the bones of the people of the Flood whose root is from the six extremities of Zeir Anpin of Tohu—
is the matter of the force of the midos,
in the language of the Zohar "great mountains."
That the midos of Tohu are opposite and corresponding to the midos of rectification.
And in the language of our sages "hard as a cedar"—
the force of the midos of Tohu,
and "soft as a reed"—
the midos of rectification.
And in this there is the lesson—
"A person should always be soft as a reed and not hard as a cedar,"
a person's midos should be "soft as a reed,"
midos of rectification,
and not "hard as a cedar,"
the force of the midos of Tohu.
From the above:
ממ
The above is only an explanation of how the matter of the people of the Flood is connected with the service of man and the study of Torah,
and why Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda engaged in the study of Torah concerning the people of the generation of the Flood;
און פארוואס ר' חייא ור' יהודה האבן זיך עוסק געווען בלימוד התורה וועגן די אנשי הדור המבול;
This is, however, not an explanation of the fact that they actually walked among the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood,
and there specifically they walked three hundred steps within one bone? That also in this there must be a matter and a lesson for each individual according to his understanding.
The explanation of this is:
It is known the teaching on the verse "The steps of a man are established by G-d, and He delights in his way",
that every step of a Jew is connected with the Above. In every place in the world where a Jew arrives, there is a supernal intention,
that he should fulfill there a commandment etc.
As is known the story that the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, told, that a spring of water waited thousands of years since the six days of creation until I should come there and make a blessing on the water of that spring and through this reveal there that "everything was created by His word",
and through this elevate the spring.
Accordingly, it is also understood regarding this that the Tannaim were in this place where the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood were lying,
and they walked within one bone three hundred steps –
that "The steps of a man are established by G-d, and He delights in his way",
every step there was with a supernal intention in order that they should accomplish something there,
and that the bones should contribute to their service.
First and foremost –
that through seeing the bones there should come to them the contemplation of "How great are Your works",
that He created such large bones,
so much so that within one bone one walks three hundred steps.
Additionally, the bones also serve as a matter that brings out the greatness of G-d –
like "From the stone with which they wrestle, you know the strength of His might"
Notwithstanding what great bones the people of the Flood had,
so much so that within one bone one walked three hundred steps,
which the magnitude in quantity indicates a greatness in quality,
and as discussed, the root of the generation of the Flood is in Tohu,
which is even higher than Tikkun,
and they had such intensity that even after the Flood their bones remained,
and furthermore:
from Rashi in our portion it is understood that if:
If the generation of the Flood had unity,
they would have stood at a level like the generation of the Dispersion,
that "nothing will be withheld from them" to reach the heavens,
so much so that even the supernal names would have helped them
(because they knew how to use the power of the supernal names etc.),
as explained in Torah Ohr –
Nevertheless,
notwithstanding the greatness and intensity of the generation of the Flood,
the Almighty contended with them –
this brings out the greatness of the Victor,
of the Almighty.
And as explained in the continuation of the Hilula, that specifically the opponent brings out the attribute of victory of the King,
which is the deepest matter in the King,
and therefore "for the sake of defeating the opponent, he squanders all the treasures of precious wealth gathered and collected over many years from generation to generation, which he never used for anything,
and hidden and sealed from every eye".
From this we see two things: (a)
The intensity of an opposing thing,
to such an extent that in order to defeat it one must squander the most hidden treasures,
because with ordinary and revealed matters one cannot defeat it. (b)
That specifically the opponent brings out the attribute of victory and the squandering of the most hidden treasures etc.
From this it is understood,
that when one sees the greatness of the opponent,
the large bones of the people of the generation of the Flood,
and that nevertheless the Almighty contended with them –
this brings out even more the greatness and the "most hidden treasures" of the Almighty
(the Victor).
The above
(section M)
is regarding how the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood bring out greatness from the side of holiness,
but it does not speak about what is accomplished in the bones themselves.
And it is understood that in order for there to be the perfection of "And the kingdom shall be the L-rd's" in the entire world,
that one should see openly in the entire world that there is no place devoid of Him –
one must accomplish a refinement in the bones themselves
(not only that they should bring out greatness from the side of holiness),
and not in a manner of suppression
(subjugation),
but to transform them themselves to holiness.
Why, as long as they do not transform it into holiness,
there remains an entity in the world that was opposed to G‑dliness,
consequently it is not manifestly revealed throughout the world that there is no place devoid of Him.
Therefore, the perfection of the elevation is specifically at the time when "intentional sins become as merits,"
when the intentional sins themselves are transformed into merits,
and not merely "as merits" but actual "merits."
As our Sages, of blessed memory, said in Menachot: "The bedding that she spread for him in a forbidden manner, she spread for him in a permitted manner." This is seemingly an astonishing thing:
Did he lack bedding,
a pillow,
a bed,
that he had to use specifically that which she spread for him in a forbidden manner?!
Rather, if a "pillow" remains that was not transformed into holiness,
there is a lack in the perfection of the revelation that there is no place devoid of Him,
therefore the perfection of the matter is specifically when one transforms the bedding that she spread for him in a forbidden manner, through their becoming the bedding that she spread for him in a permitted manner.
And it is also emphasized regarding Yom HaKippurim:
The Mishnah relates that on Yom HaKippurim they would tie "a tongue of scarlet
(wool dyed red,
crimson worm)
on the head of the scapegoat...
and to the one that was slaughtered
(the goat for the L‑rd)
opposite the place of its slaughter,"
"and when the goat reached the wilderness, the tongue would turn white."
And it is seemingly not understood:
All the services specific to Yom HaKippurim,
which includes the services of the two goats,
the Kohen performed specifically in white garments,
and explicitly not in garments of scarlet,
even scarlet of holiness,
in order not to arouse the accuser, etc. –
now why did they tie specifically a thread of scarlet on the goat for the L‑rd?!
Granted, that which they tied it on the scapegoat –
it is because that goat is connected to the opposite of good,
but why did they tie it also on the goat for the L‑rd?
The explanation of this is
(as above):
the perfection of the matter is specifically when one transforms also the matter of the thread of scarlet so that it becomes a thread of white,
in the manner of intentional sins becoming as merits.
And as is known the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov on the interpretation of "Turn away from evil and do good,"
not as the world interprets, that "turn away from evil" and "do good" are two separate things,
rather it is one continuum:
"Turn away from evil and do good –
that one should make good from evil." The order is only,
that one begins with the service of subjugation,
"turn away from evil,"
and afterwards one comes to the service of transformation,
that from the evil one makes good.
And this is the perfection of the matter that the Tannaim accomplished by walking among the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood
(not only that it should come to the side of holiness,
but also) –
to transform those bones of the other side into holiness.
For this it is not sufficient that they remain in their place in the study hall and learn about the generation of the Flood,
because then they cannot refine and transform the bones themselves as they are in their place,
rather in order to refine and transform them they had to go physically
(step with their feet)
among the bones,
even to go into one bone a number of steps.
In the manner of the above,
that transformation is specifically when one takes the "bedding that she spread for him in a forbidden manner" and from it becomes "bedding that she spread for him in a permitted manner,"
specifically from a thread of scarlet becomes a thread of white.
In the manner of what was discussed earlier, that the spring had waited since the six days of creation so that an I should come and reveal that "everything exists by His word."
Where is it stated in the revealed
(that through actual walking in a specific place one can accomplish)?
It is stated explicitly regarding Abraham our father:
Through "Arise, walk through the land, to its length and to its breadth"
(which the Almighty said to him)
he acquired the place of his walking
(and known is the discussion regarding this, what kind of acquisition this was and what he acquired through it).
Similarly regarding the walking of Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehuda in the place of the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood,
that through this they "acquired" the bones from the kelipah –
for holiness.
The elevation in the clarification and transformation of the essences of the generation of the people of the flood from impurity to holiness is not only in this, that through this one reveals the "there is no place empty of Him" also in the matter and in this place,
but through this there comes an additional elevation, higher still,
which one would not have had without this,
including the generation of the flood –
because the Patriarchs were already a preparation for the Giving of the Torah,
and also Noah is connected specifically with the virtue of the Jewish people,
therefore it is said "And God remembered Noah etc." in the verses of remembrance on Rosh Hashanah,
because the "and He remembered" was "from the aspect of the inner and essential love...
from the aspect of the essential virtue of the souls of Israel",
consequently Noah is also connected with the Giving of the Torah –
consequently it turns out that the main matter of being nourished by the kindness of the Holy One, blessed be He, before the Giving of the Torah itself is in the ten generations from Adam to Noah.
One must understand:
The Mishnah says in Avot:
"Ten generations from Adam to Noah, to make known how long-suffering He is, for all the generations were provoking Him to anger until He brought upon them the waters of the flood."
And according to the above it is understood, since the ten generations
(especially)
were nourished by the kindness of the Holy One, blessed be He,
the kindness of Tohu which is above the order of the chain of descent,
which is drawn down also to one who is not worthy –
the existence of the ten generations could be, even though "they were provoking Him to anger".
But this itself is entirely not understood:
How do these two things accord?
On one side, the ten generations
(especially)
are connected with the most exalted level –
the kindness of the Holy One, blessed be He,
the kindness of Tohu
(greatness),
which is above measure and limitation;
שלמעלה ממדידה והגבלה;
and together with this they are on the lowest level –
"they were provoking Him to anger"?!
Also one must understand:
The Torah does not speak even in disparagement of an animal,
so how does it come that a Mishnah should speak in disparagement of human beings,
and moreover in disparagement of ten generations?!
It is understood from this itself that which is written in the Torah,
that this is not a matter of disparagement.
And the explanation of this:
It is precisely this that proves it:
Whatever is highest, most high, falls lowest, more low
(as above),
this itself, that the ten generations until the flood received their influence from the aspect of the kindness of Tohu
(higher, more high),
at the time it came to them it became a descent and fall –
that is the lowest, most low –
"they were provoking Him to anger until He brought upon them the waters of the flood",
"it consumed everything",
in order to purify the world from "they were provoking Him to anger".
But on the other hand:
The intention of the flood is in order "to purify the land",
and to clarify and return and elevate the ten generations back to their root and source in Tohu.
And based on this one will understand why the Torah
(the Mishnah in Avot)
writes about this
(even though it is seemingly a disparagement),
for from this itself it is understood that it is not a disparagement:
It has already been spoken many times regarding "Jacob and Esau mentioned in the portion" that as Esau is written in the Torah
(in the portion)
he is not the opposite of the good,
but a part of the Torah,
with the entire holiness of the Torah,
and on the contrary:
Through Esau a portion in the Torah comes about. In a different style:
That as Esau is written in the Torah he is Esau of holiness –
as he is from the aspect of his root in Tohu.
For every matter that is written in the Torah, the Most High Himself said it. As the father writes that "everything that is stated in the Written Torah and in the Oral Torah, both in Halachah and in Aggadah etc., and likewise the Halachah that they said afterwards is a fabrication –
as the Gemara says regarding Rav Ashi that 'that of Rav Ashi is a fabrication' –
all of them truly God said etc.,
and God Himself said the Halachah and He Himself said that it is a fabrication etc."
That is, that also the undesirable matters that are written in the Torah,
the Most High said them. And therefore, as these matters are written in the Torah, they are not undesirable things,
but a part of the Torah that the Holy One, blessed be He, said.
That is, as the matter is in its root and source in holiness.
And through that which one learns about this matter in the Torah, one draws down the source and root of this matter as it is in holiness,
in Tohu and the like.
Regarding this it is understood in the Mishnah about the ten generations from Adam to Noah that "they were provoking Him to anger until He brought upon them the flood":
As the matter is written in the Torah, this is not an undesirable matter,
but a part of the Torah that the Holy One, blessed be He, said,
And on the contrary:
As it is written in the Torah, it becomes elevated to such an extent that it becomes a part of a Mishnah,
and in the Mishnah itself –
a part of "matters of piety".
And through the fact that one learns about this matter in Torah, one returns the ten generations to their root and source in the world of Tohu
(which were nourished by the kindness of the Holy One, blessed be He,
the kindness of Tohu),
which then becomes a very great elevation,
because Tohu is higher than Tikkun.
And in the letters of Kabbalah:
Through the refinement of the name BaN by means of the name MaH,
since BaN is below MaH,
BaN ascends into SaG
(in the world of Tohu)
which is higher than MaH
(of Tikkun)
. Through this matter of the SaG letters and the coarseness of the kelipah, one arrives at SaG and the coarseness of holiness in the world of Tohu
(higher than MaH).
Similar to the matter of "A female shall surround a man" etc.
For from the aspect of this elevation of the world of Tohu, one wishes that the abundant lights of Tohu should be revealed and drawn down
(which are more than the limited lights of Tikkun),
the matter of "hard as cedar",
only one wants that the abundant lights of Tohu should be drawn down into the abundant vessels of Tikkun,
"soft as a reed".
That is, one should have the "hard as cedar" within the "soft as a reed".
That is:
Specifically through the ten generations from Adam until Noah,
including the generation of the Flood,
who "kept provoking and coming",
the coarseness of kelipah,
the intensity of the gevurot and judgments –
when one refines them and transforms them and returns them to their root and source in Tohu,
the abundant lights of Tohu are drawn down,
the kindness of the Holy One, blessed be He,
the kindness of Tohu
(greatness)
into the vessels of Tikkun
("soft as a reed").
Specifically through the Flood which "consumed everything",
the purification and refinement and transformation of the generation of the Flood is effected,
who then stand at the most elevated level in the world of Tohu
(as this is drawn down into the vessels of Tikkun).
Therefore it is said that the generation of the Flood "have no portion in the World to Come" as a virtue,
as explained in the words of our Rabbis, of blessed memory, "The generation of the wilderness have no portion in the World to Come."
And likewise is the matter that Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yehudah opened up in the bones of the people of the generation of the Flood –
the refinement and transformation of the bones from kelipah to holiness,
until they returned the bones as they are in their root in Tohu,
higher than Tikkun.
The lesson from this:
When a Jew goes out into the world and sees there a wildness. And not that he sees it somewhere in a remote corner,
rather he takes steps in the matter itself –
he must know that he has nothing to fear,
because "the steps of a man are established by God, and He delights in his way",
every step that he takes is from the One above.
Consequently he has nothing to fear from it,
and on the contrary:
He must utilize it so that it should add to him in the contemplation of "How great are Your works". Until this brings out the greatness of God, that He is victorious over the wild things.
And the intention is,
that he should learn Torah and fulfill commandments in that place,
and through this accomplish the refinement of the place.
Until he effects that the wildness itself,
the "bones",
should be transformed into holiness and perceive the truth.
And since he goes there with the power of the Holy One, blessed be He,
he certainly has the power to accomplish this.
And may it be His will that there should be the matter of "Noach" meaning "rest for the upper ones, rest for the lower ones":
Through the service of Jews in the lower realms, there is rest in the upper realms –
satisfaction and delight of the Creator. And from rest for the upper ones, there is rest for the lower ones –
the delight of the Creator becomes the delight of the created being.
And from this one arrives at Parshat Lech Lecha
(as one begins reading at Minchah),
that one goes in a journey
("Lech")
out of the inner exile and out of the external and general exile,
and one goes into the Holy Land,
in the true and complete redemption,
And those who are physically already now in the Land of Israel
(for them going ("Lech") there literally is not applicable) –
but in the future redemption a perfection will come –
in spirituality,
and from this it also descends in physicality –
in the Land of Israel through the fact that there will be all its inhabitants upon it,
consequently, for the inhabitants of the Land of Israel as well, "going" is applicable in the content of the matter to the Land of Israel as it will be in its perfection in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach,
may he come and redeem us and lead us upright to our land,
And there will be the perfection of the people,
"with our young and with our elders etc. with our sons and with our daughters",
together with the perfection of the Torah,
together with the perfection of the land,
and added to this –
"God your Lord will expand your border",
And the nations bring Jews into the Land of Israel just as Jews brought
(in the time of the Temple)
a "meal-offering in a pure vessel",
And speedily, in our very days,
in the language of the Rambam –
"immediately they are redeemed",
and out of joy and goodness of heart.
He instructed the holy Rebbe Shlita to sing "Yehi ratzon etc. that the Beis HaMikdash be built speedily in our days and give us our portion in Your Torah".
Afterwards he began to sing "Nyet nyet nikavo".
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will presumably make a final blessing,
and afterwards they will distribute the jugs of wine
(liquor).
His Holy Honor our Master our Teacher and our Rebbe Shlita distributed bottles of beverage for the gatherings in the four lands in the Holy Land,
and to the emissaries Shlita who did not receive beverage on the night after Simchas Torah.
In the middle of the distribution he said:
Since it is Shabbos,
there is the advice that those who have received bottles of beverage should now distribute a little of the beverage here,
and the rest in their places.
Afterwards he said:
The Kohanim who did not receive bottles of beverage at the time it was distributed
(at the farbrengen connected with)
Simchas Torah –
should now approach and take.
Afterwards he said:
One repeats again that since it is Shabbos,
one should not forget now to give another person a little beverage,
and if one cannot find another person –
one may give oneself!
Afterwards he began to sing the melody of the Hakafos of his father of blessed memory.
He gave the food items to the honorable M.Y. Shlita.
