English translation 1

A.
א.
In the verse "And the kos and the shalach and the yanshuf" 1
אין פסוק "ואת הכוס ואת השלך ואת הינשוף״
Rashi first stands on the word "shalach" and explains: "Our Sages explained2
שטעלט זיך רש״י פריער אויפן ווארט "השלך" און איז מפרש: "פירשו רבותינו
This is the one that draws fish from the sea.
זה השולה דגים מן הים.
And this is what Onkelos translated 'veshalinona',"
וזהו שתרגם אונקלוס ושלינונא",
And afterwards he explains the other two species,
און נאכדעם איז ער מפרש די אנדערע צוויי מינים,
"kos" and "yanshuf"
"כוס" און "ינשוף"
(as follows sec. 2).
(כדלקמן ס״ב).
One must understand:
דארף מען פארשטיין:
A)
א)
In the verse it says "the cup" <b>before</b> "the pelican" — why does Rashi change their order in his commentary and interpret the word "cup" only after his commentary on "the pelican"3?
אין פסוק שטייט דאך "הכוס" פאר ״השלך״ — פארוואס איז רש״י משנה זייער סדר אין זיין פירוש און פארטייטשט דעם ווארט "כוס" ערשט נאך זיין פירוש אויף "השלך" ?
B)
ב)
When Rashi gives the translation of the other kinds of birds in the portion
בעת רש״י זאגט דעם אפ־ טייטש פון די אנדערע מיני עופות אין פרשה
(also regarding "cup and owl" which is in that same verse)
(אויך ביי "כוס וינשוף" וואס אין דעם פסוק גופא)
he brings <b>not</b> any source for his commentaries.
ברענגט ער ניט קיין מקור צו זיינע פירושים.
Why specifically here,
פארוואס דוקא דא,
regarding "the pelican",
ביי "השלך",
does he write "our Rabbis explained" and further adds "and this is what Onkelos translated etc." and is not satisfied merely with stating the commentary itself: "this is the one that draws out etc."?
שרייבט ער "פירשו רבותינו" און איז נאך מוסיף "וזהו שתרגם אונקלוס כו׳" און באגנוגנט זיך ניט בלויז מיטן זאגן דעם פירוש אליין: ״זה השולה וכו'״ ?
3)
ג)
The wonder is even greater: when Rashi brings from Targum Onkelos a proof for his explanation
די תמי׳ איז נאך גרעסער: ווען רש״י ברענגט פון תרגום אונקלוס א ראי׳ צו זיינעם א פירוש
(because the explanation is not so clear),
(צוליב דעם וואס דער פירוש איז ניט אזוי גלא־ טיק),
he says the language "וכן תרגם" and the like.
זאגט ער דעם לשון "וכן תרגם" וכיו״ב.
Why does he say in our verse the language "וזהו שתרגם כו׳" from which it is implied that he is entirely outside
פארוואס זאגט ער אין אונזער פסוק דעם לשון "וזהו שתרגם כו׳" וואס דערפון איז משמע אז ער איז גאר אויסן
(not to bring a proof from Targum Onkelos,
(ניט צו ברענגען א ראי׳ פון תרגום אונקלוס,
but)
נאר)
to explain the Targum — and this is completely not understood: Rashi wrote his commentary on <b>Chumash</b> and not on Targum Onkelos?
צו מפרש זיין דעם תרגום — און דאס איז לגמרי ניט מובן: רש״י האט דאך געשריבן זיין פירוש אויף חומש און ניט אויף תרגום אונקלום?
4)
ד)
To know what "your" means,
אויף צו וויסן וואס עם מיינט "שלך",
it would seemingly be enough when Rashi says "השולה <b>דגים</b>"
וואלט געווען לכאורה גענוג ווען רש״י זאגט "השולה דגים "
(and "fish" are indeed in the sea)
(און ״דגים״ געפינען זיך דאך אין ים)
— just as Targum Onkelos4
— אזוי ווי דער תרגום אונקלוס
translates: "ושלינונא" — why does Rashi need to add that he is "שולה" the fish "מן הים"?
פאר־ טייטשט: ״ושלינונא״ — צוליב וואס דארף רש״י צוגעבן אז ער איז "שולה" די דגים "מן הים"?
2.
ב.
After Rashi translates the word "hashlech",
נאכדעם ווי רש״י טייטשט אפ דעם ווארט "השלך",
he continues: "Cos v'yanshuf — they are tzuitush that cry out at night and have jaws like a man.
זאגט ער וויי־ טער: ״כוס וינשוף — הם צואיטוש הצועקים בלילה ויש להם לסתות כאדם.
And another similar to it that is called yivatz".
ועוד אחר דומה לו שקורין ייב״ץ".
Learning Rashi's commentary at first glance,
לערנענדיק דעם פירוש פון רש״י בהשקפה ראשונה,
it turns out,
קומט אויס,
that the words "v'od acher domeh lo etc." come as a continuation to the very beginning of the commentary "hem tzuitush etc." — i.e.
אז די ווערטער "ועוד אחר דומה לו כו׳" קומען בהמשך צום סאמע אנהויב פונעם פירוש ״הם צואיטוש כו׳״ — ד.
that
ה.
that speaking about both kinds of birds "cos v'yanshuf" Rashi explains: "hem"
אז ריידנדיק וועגן ביידע מיני עופות׳ "כוס וינשוף" איז רש״י מפרש: ״הם״
(the two birds are — one of them is)
(די צוויי עופות זיינען — איינער פון זיי איז)
"tzuitush etc. v'od acher domeh lo
"צואיטוש כו' ועוד אחר דומה לו
(and the second of them,
(און דער צוויי־ טער פון זיי,
which is similar to the tzuitush)
וואס איז ענליך צום צואיטוש)
shekurin yivatz".
שקורין ייבץ".
And this that Rashi says also by "tsoitus" in plural language,
און דאס וואס רש״י זאגט אויך ביי "צואיטוש" לשון רבים,
"<b>the screechers</b> etc. and <b>to them</b> etc." — although he speaks here about only <b>one</b> species of bird
" הצועקים כו׳ ויש להם כו׳ ״ — הגם אז ער רעדט דא וועגן בלויז איין מין עוף
("kos" or "yanshuf")
(״כוס״ אדער ״ינשוף״)
— this is because,
— איז דאס דערפאר וואס,
unlike by other species,
אנדערש ווי ביי אנדע־ רע מינים,
about the species "tsoitus" is spoken in a plural language
ווערט וועגן מין "צואיטוש" גערעדט אין א לשון רבים
(as one finds in the holy tongue,
(אזוי ווי מען געפינט אין לשון קודש,
for example,
לדוגמא,
that by certain species of things,
אז ביי געוויסע מינים פון זאכן,
such as water,
ווי למשל מים,
only plural language is used).
ווערט גענוצט נאר לשון רבים).
And for this reason Rashi also calls the name of the species: "tsoitus"
און מהאי טעמא רופט רש״י אן אויך דעם נאמען פונעם מין: "צואי־ טוש"
(and not "tsoit")
(און ניט "צואיט")
with the addition of the letter shin at the end of the name which indicates
מיטן צוגאב פון אות שי״ן ביים סוף פונעם־ נאמען וואס ווייזט
(in the French language)
(אין דער פראנצויזישער שפראך)
plural language
אויף לשון רבים
(as in Yiddish and English)
(אזוי ווי אין אידיש און ענגליש)
— because by this species one always uses a language that refers to the birds as plural.
— ווייל ביי דעם מין באנוצט מען אלע מאל א לשון וואס באציט זיך צו די עופות אלס רבים.
3.
ג.
But in truth, one cannot learn this way,
אבער אין אמת׳ן קען מען אזוי ניט לערנען,
because
ווייל
(besides that Rashi himself,
(לבד זאת וואס רש״י גופא,
in his commentary on the Talmud,
אין זיין פירוש אויף ש״ס,
translates the same species in the singular: "ציאיט" 5
פארטייטשט דעם זעלבן מין אין א ל׳ יחיד: ״ציאיט״
or "צואיטה" 6)
אדער ״צואיטה״ )
at the end of the commentary itself, Rashi says that the second species,
ביים סיום פון דעם פירוש גופא זאגט רש״י אז דער צווייטער מין,
"יַעֲנָה",
"ייבץ",
is "similar <b>to him</b>"
איז "דומה לו "
(to "צואיטוש")
(צו "צואיטוש")
in the singular — one can no longer assume that for "צואיטה" specifically the plural form fits: and it is also difficult to say,
בלשון יחיד — קען מען דאך שוין ניט אננעמען אז אויף צואיטא פאסט דוקא דער לשון רבים: און ס׳איז אויך שווער צו זאגן,
that in the same commentary Rashi should first speak about the species in the plural and immediately afterwards — in the singular.
אז אין זעלבן פירוש זאל רש״י פריער ריידן וועגן דעם מין בלשון רבים און באלד דערנאך — בלשון יחיד.
Thus it is proven from this,
איז דערפון מוכח,
that with his commentary "they are <b>צו׳איטוש הצועקים</b> at night and <b>they have</b> cheeks like a man"
אז מיט זיין פירוש "הם צו׳איטוש הצועקים בלילה ויש להם לסתות כאדם"
(in the plural)
(בלשון רבים)
Rashi intends to explain both species that both "כוס" and "ינשוף" are the birds that are called "צואיטוש"7
מיינט רש״י צו מפרש זיין ביידע מינים אז סיי "כוס" און סיי "ינשוף" זיינען דאס די פייגל וואס רופן זיך "צואיטוש"
4.
ד.
5.
ה.
Although in French both species are designated by <b>one</b> general name,
הגם אז אין פראנ־ צויזיש ווערן ביידע מינים באצייכנט מיט איין אלגעמיינעם נאמען,
nevertheless the verse distinguishes them through separate names — "כוס" and "ינשוף" — because in the Holy Tongue there is no name that would include them together.
פונ-דעסטוועגן צעטיילט זיי דער פסוק דורך צורי באזונדערע נעמען — ״כוס״ און ״ינשוף״ — ווייל אין לשון־קודש איז ניטא אזא נאמען וואס זאל זיי כולל זיין צוזאמען.
But since it is difficult to say that in Lashon HaKodesh there should not be a general name for both sorts of tzuita8
אבער היות ס׳איז שווער צו זאגן אז אין לשון־קודש זאל ניט זיין קיין שם כללי פאר ביידע סארטן צואיטוש
(which have a commonality between them, which is why they are called by one name in French)
(וועלכע האבן א געמיינזאמקייט צווישן זיך וואס דערפאר רופן זיי זיך מיט איין נאמען אין פראנצויזיש)
— therefore Rashi adds
— דעריבער איז רש״י מוסיף
(for the sake of completeness)
(לרווחא דמילתא)
another explanation: "ועוד אחר דומה לו שקורין ייבץ": that since also the species yavetz is similar to tzuita,
נאך א פירוש: "ועוד אחר דומה לו שקורין ייבץ": אז היות ווי אויך דער מין ייבץ איז ענליך צו צואיטא,
one can say that one of the two,
קען מען זאגן׳ אז איינער פון די צוויי,
"כוס" or "ינשוף",
"כוס" אדער "ינשוף",
is a name for
איז א נאמען פאר
(all sorts)
(אלע סארטן)
"צואיטא",
"צואיטא",
and the second is "ייבץ"9.
און דער צווייטער איז "ייבץ" .
ד.
ד.
But it is not understood: since it is smoother to say,
ס׳איז אבער ניט מובן: וויבאלד ס׳איז גלאטיקער צו זאגן,
as above,
כנ״ל,
that with the two names the verse means two separate species
אז מיט די צוויי נעמען איז דער פסוק אויסן צוויי באזונדערע מינים
(and <b>not</b> such that can be designated as two branches of the same species itself)
(און ניט אזעלכע וואס קענען באצייכנט ווערן ווי צוויי אפצווייגן פון דעם זעלבן מין גופא)
— why then does Rashi teach at the beginning of <b></b>
— פארוואס׳זשע לערנט רש״י בתחילת
(main)
(עיקר)
his explanation that "כוס" and "ינשוף" are both included in the species tzuita?
פירושו אז "כוס" און "ינשוף" זיינען ביידע נכלל אין דעם מין צואיטא?
Therefore one must learn,
דעריבער מוז מען לערנען,
that the words "כוס" and "ינשוף" carry within themselves a certain meaning that shows that thereby is meant the species "צואיטא"
אז די ווערטער "כוס" און "ינשוף" טראגן אין זיך א געוויסע באדייטונג וואס ווייזט אז דערמיט ווערט געמיינט דער מין "צואיטא"
that one of them means something else, Rashi emphasizes "similar to him"10,
אז איינער פון זיי מיינט ייבץ איז רש״י מדגיש "דומה לו" ,
that that which one can say that "כוס" or "ינשוף" means something else, it is because it is similar to צואיטא].
אז דאס וואס מען קען זאגן אז "כוס" צי "ינשוף" מיינט ייבץ איז עס דערפאר ווייל ער איז דומה צו צואיטא].
One must understand: Where lies in the words "כוס" and "ינשוף" the indication of the species "צואיטא"?
דארף מען פארשטיין: וואו ליגט אין די ווערטער "כוס" און "ינשוף" די אנדייטונג אויפן מין "צואיטא"?
Seemingly, one could explain: That which Rashi teaches
לכאורה האט מען געקענט מסביר זיין: דאס וואס רש״י לערנט
(at the beginning of his commentary)
(בתחילת פירושו)
that "כוס" and "ינשוף" are both "צואיטה",
אז "כוס" און "ינשוף" זיינען ביידע "צואיטה",
it is because thus he heard from his teachers.
איז עס דערפאר וואס אזוי האט ער געהערט פון רבותיו.
And since regarding knowing which bird is called by a specific name it is not possible to say logical arguments,
און וויבאלד אז בנוגע צו וויסן וועלכער עוף ווערט אנגערופן מיט א בעשטימטן נאמען איז ניט שייך צו זאגן סברות,
and the only source for this is solely "מסורה",
און דער איינ־ ציקער מקור אויף דעם איז בלויז "מסורה",
therefore Rashi writes at the beginning of his commentary
דערפאר שרייבט רש״י בתחילת פירושו
(which is the <b>main</b> part of his commentary)
(וואס דאם איז דער עיקר פון זיין פירוש)
that both of them are "צואיטוש".
אז ביידע זיי־ נען "צואיטוש".
And even after Rashi teaches further,
און אפילו נאכדעם ווי רש״י לערנט ווייטער,
that it can be that one of them is "ייבץ"
אז עם קען זיין אז איינער פון זיי איז "ייבץ"
(as it stands to reason that the two words of the verse are two separate species),
(ווי עס לייגט זיך ע״פ שכל אז די צוויי ווערטער פון פסוק זיינען צוויי באזונדערע מינים),
he nevertheless adds "דומה לו",
איז ער פונדעסטוועגן מוסיף "דומה לו",
because in order to be able to teach that "כוס" or "ינשוף" is "ייבץ"
ווייל בכדי צו קענען לערנען אז "כוס" אדער "ינשוף" איז "ייבץ"
(<b>differently</b> than he heard from his teacher that both are צואיטוש)
( אנדערש ווי ער האט געהערט פון זיין רבי׳ן אז ביידע זיינען צואיטוש)
Rashi relies on that which ייבץ is similar to צואיטה,
איז זיך רש״י סומך אויף דעם וואס ייבץ איז ענליך צו צואיטה,
and due to the similarity between them,
און מצד דער ענליכקייט צווישן זיי,
they also accepted the second species-"ייבץ" as "צואיטה"
האט מען אויך דעם צווייטן מין־״ייבץ" אנגענומען ווי "צואיטה"
(i.e.,
(ד.
5.
ה.
that is,
ה.
that also the second explanation is founded upon the מסורה).
אז אויך דער צווייטער פירוש איז באגרינדעט אויף דער מסורה).
But the explanation does not hold out.
אבער דער הסבר האלט ניט אויס.
Because in his commentary on the Talmud11
ווייל איז זיין פירוש על הש״ס
Rashi says clearly,
זאגט רש״י קלאר,
that "karya"
אז "קריא"
(the translation of "kos")
(דער תרגום פון "כוס")
is "yavetz",
איז "ייבץ",
and "kapufa"
און "קפופא"
(the translation of "yanshuf")
(דער תרגום פון "ינשוף")
is "tzoita" — and it is understandable,
איז ״צואיטא״ — און ס׳איז דאך פארשטנאדיק,
that also his commentaries in the Talmud
אז אויך זיינע פירושים אין ש״ס
(regarding name-words)
(בנוגע נעמען־ווערטער)
he received from his teachers.
האט ער מקבל געווען מרבותיו.
So it is difficult to understand why in his commentary on Chumash he assumes
איז במילא שווער צו פארשטיין פארוואס אין זיין פירוש אויף חומש נעמט ער אן
(at the beginning and main part of his commentary)
(בתחילת ועיקר פירושו)
that both,
אז ביידע,
both "kos"
סיי "כוס"
(karya)
(קריא)
and "yanshuf"
און סיי "ינשוף"
(kapu- fa)
(קפו־ פא)
are tzoitus — <b>differently</b> than in his commentary on the Talmud?
זיינען צואיטוש — אנדערש ווי בפירושו על הש״ס?
6.
ו.
Also regarding the translation of "tinshemet"12
אויך ביים טייטש פון "תנשמת"
(in a verse further on)
(אין א פסוק ווייטער)
one finds,
געפינט מען,
that in his commentary on the Torah Rashi changes regarding his commentary on the Talmud;
אז בפירושו על התורה איז רש״י משנה לגבי פירושו על הש״ס;
In his commentary on Gemara13
אין זיין פירוש אויף גמרא
Rashi gives <b>two</b> interpretations of tinshemet: first he interprets that it means "ציאיט" and then he says "ולי נראה שקורין קלבא שוריץ"14
זאגט רש״י צוויי טייטשן אויף תנשמת: צום ערשטן פארטייטשט ער אז דאס מיינט "ציאיט" און דערנאך זאגט ער "ולי נראה שקורין קלבא שוריץ"
; in his commentary on the Torah he says <b>simply</b>: "התנשמת היא קלבא שוריץ etc." and the interpretation of "ציאיט" he does not mention at all
; בפירושו על התורה זאגט ער בפשיטות : "התנשמת היא קלבא שוריץ כו׳ " און דעם פירוש פון "ציאיט" דערמאנט ער אינגאנצן ניט
(even not as a <b>second</b> interpretation),
(אפילו ניט אלס א צווייטן פירוש),
despite the fact that it is the <b>first</b> in his commentary on the Talmud.
טראץ דעם וואס ער איז דער ערשטער בפירושו על הש״ס.
But there is a difference between them: here,
ס׳איז אבער דא א חילוק צווישן זיי: דא,
in the commentary on tinshemet,
ביים פירוש אויף תנשמת,
the reason for the change is understandable: although according to Rashi himself it turns out
איז פארשטאנדיק דער טעם פונעם שינוי: הגם ביי רש״י אליין קומט אויס
("נראה לי")
("נראה לי")
that tinshemet is "קלבא שוריץ",
אז תנשמת איז "קלבא שוריץ",
he nevertheless, in his commentary on the Talmud,
וויל ער אבער בפירושו על הש״ס,
which is relevant to halacha,
וואס איז נוגע להלכה,
does not want to rely entirely
ניט בויען אינגאנצן
(or even primarily)
(אדער אפילו באופן עיקרי)
on the interpretation that <b>he</b> prefers and he therefore brings <b>first and foremost</b> the interpretation that he heard from his teacher15.
אויף דעם פשט וואס אים געפעלט און ער ברענגט דערפאר לכל לראש דעם פירוש ששמע מרבו .
(And from this same reason,
(און מהאי טעמא גופא,
because it is relevant to halacha,
ווייל ס׳איז נוגע להלכה,
he also brings his interpretation: for just as he must reckon with the interpretation that he heard from his teacher,
ברענגט ער אויך זיין פירוש: ווארום כשם ווי ער מוז זיך רעכענען מיטן פירוש ששמע מרבו,
so too he may not conceal the interpretation that occurs to him16.
אזוי טאר ער אויך ניט מעלים זיין דעם פירוש וואס ביי אים קומט אויס .
No more,
ניט מער,
that regarding halacha the interpretation that he received from his teachers outweighs for him,
וואם בנוגע להלכה וועגט ביי אים איבער דער פירוש וואס ער האט מקבל געווען מרבותיו,
and therefore <b>his</b> interpretation — the second one).
און דער־ פאר איז זיין פירוש — דער צווייטער).
But not so in his commentary on the Torah,
משא״כ אין זיין פירוש על התורה,
where he teaches the verses according to the simple meaning,
וואו ער לערנט איין די פסוקים על דרך הפשט,
he does not hold that he must teach according to what he received from his teacher,
האלט ער ניט אז ער דארף איינלערנען לויט דעם וואס ער האט מקבל געווען פון זיין רבי׳ן,
when to him it seems that the simple meaning is in another manner — and therefore brings only <b>his</b> interpretation17.
ווען אים אליין איז "נראה" אז דער פשט איז באופן אחר — און ברענגט דערפאר נאר זיין פירוש .
But regarding the interpretation of "kos v'yanshuf",
אבער בנוגע דעם טייטש פון "כוס וינשוף",
which also from the intellect it is appropriate to say as above,
וואס אויך מצד השכל לייגט זיך צו זאגן כנ״ל,
that the two na- mes are two separate species,
אז די צוויי נע־ מען זיינען צוויי באזונדערע מינים,
the aforementioned question remains: why does he teach at the beginning
בלייבט די קשיא הנ״ל: פארוואס לערנט ער בתחילת
(main)
(עיקר)
his commentary "hem tzuitush",
פירושו "הם צואיטוש",
and not as in his commentary on the Talmud that "kos" is a separate species
און ניט ווי בפירושו על הש״ס אז "כוס" איז א באזוג־ דערער מין
(yavetz)?
(ייבץ)?
Even more surprising: even his se- cond commentary
נאך מער תמי: אפילו זיין צוויי־ טער פירוש
(in Chumash)
(אין חומש)
does not match his commentary on the Talmud: in his commentary on the Talmud Rashi says clearly that kos
גלייכט זיך ניט אויס מיט זיין פירוש אויף ש״ס: בפירושו על הש״ס זאגט רש״י באופן ברור אז כוס
(kria)
(קריא)
is yaventz,
איז יבנץ,
and yanshuf
און ינשוף
(kfufa)
(קפופא)
is tzuita; but in his
איז צואיטה; אבער אין זיין
(second)
(צווייטן)
commentary on Chumash he says only that one of the two
פירוש אויף חומש זאגט ער בלויז אז איינער פון די צוויי
(kos v'yanshuf)
(כוס וינשוף)
is yaventz and the second is tzuita,
איז יבנץ און דער צווייטער איז צואיטה,
not stating thereby which is what.
ניט זאגנדיק דערביי ווער איז וואס.
7.
ז.
One more thing must be understood here:
נאך א זאך דארף מען דא פארשטיין:
In Rashi's commentaries on the names of the birds in Chumash,
אין די פירושים פון רש״י ביי די נעמען פון די עופות אין חומש,
there are three ways18
זיי־ נען פאראן דריי אופנים
how he translates them: There are names of birds that Rashi translates only into French
ווי ער פארטייטשט זיי: ס׳זיינען דא נעמען פון עופות וואס רש״י פארטייטשט זיי בלויז אויף פראנצויזיש
(<b>not</b> giving any signs to identify them),
( ניט אנגעבנדיק קיין סימנים צו דערקענען זיי),
as with "Netz" where he gives only the French name "Epervier"; for other of the birds he says,
אווי ווי ביי "נץ" וואו ער גיט בלויז דעם פראנצויזישן נאמען "איש־ פרויר"; ביי אנדערע פון די עופות זאגט ער,
conversely,
פארקערט,
only their identifying signs and not what they are called in French — as with "Shalach": "the one who pulls fish from the sea"; and there is a case where he translates the names of the birds through both ways,
בלויז זייערע דערקענונג־סימנים און ניט ווי זיי רופן זיך אין פראנצויזיש — ווי ביי "שלך": "השולה דגים מן הים"; און פאראן א פאל וואו ער פארטייטשט די נעמען פון די עופות דורך ביידע וועגן,
as with "Kos V'yanshuf": "they are tzouettes" and he also adds — "the ones who cry out at night and have jaws like a man."
ווי ביי "כוס וינשוף": "הם צואיטוש״ און ער גיט אויך צו — "הצועקים בלילה ויש להם לסתות כאדם".
Regarding the first two ways, one can say,
בנוגע די ערשטע צוויי אופנים קען מען זאגן,
that Rashi uses the "blaz" words only19
אז רש״י נוצט זיך מיט די "בלעז״־ווערטער בלויז
in a case where by depicting the signs of the bird,
אין פאל וואו דורך אויסמאלן די סימנים פו־ נעם פויגל,
the "ben chamesh lamikra" will still not know exactly what kind of bird this is.
וועט דער "בן חמש למקרא" נאך ניט וויסן גענוי וואס פאר א פויגל דאס איז.
But regarding the third way
אבער בנוגע דעם דריטן אופן
(where Rashi explains the species of bird through both means — through its French name and also through its unique characteristic — such as for example by כוס וינשוף)
(וואו רש״י איז מפרש דעם מין עוף דורך ביידע מיטלען — דורך זיין פראנ־ צויזישן נאמען און אויך דורך זיין אייגנארטיקער תכונה — אזוי ווי למשל ביי כוס וינשוף)
requires explanation: since Rashi assumes that <b>one must</b> arrive at the translation into French
פאדערט זיך ביאור: וויבאלד רש״י נעמט אן אז מ׳מוז אנקומען צום טייטש אויף פראנצויזיש
("tzoitus")
("צואיטוש")
why does he still need, in addition to this, also to add the interpretation "the ones that cry out at night etc." — if the laaz-word is sufficient by "netz",
איז פאר־ וואס דארף ער נאך נוסף לזה אויך צוגעבן דעם אפטייטש "הצועקים בלילה כו׳״ — אויב דער לעז־ווארט איז גענוג ביי "נץ",
for example,
למשל,
why should it not be sufficient by "cos v'yanshuf"?
פארוואס זאל עס ניט מספיק זיין ביי "כוס וינשוף״ ?

So the explanation in all this:
איז דער ביאור בכל זה:
According to the simple approach it is possible to say,
עפ״י דרך הפשט לייגט זיך צו זאגן,
that the name of each thing indicates its essence.
אז דער נאמען פון יעדער זאך ווייזט אויף איר תכונה.
As the Ibn Ezra
ווי דער אבן עזרא
(whose commentary is also according to the simple approach — only not the simple approach of Rashi)
(וואס אויך זיין פירוש איז לויט דרך הפשט — נאר ניט דער דרך הפשט פון רש״י)
explains regarding all the names of the birds,
איז מבאר ביי אלע שמות העופות,
how the name expresses the characteristic,
ווי אזוי דער נאמען דריקט אויס די אייגנשאפט,

(etc.)
(אד״ג)
of the bird.
פון דעם עוף.
And therefore, for his interpretation that "shalakh" is "the one who pulls out fish, etc.,"
און דערפאר איז פאר זיין פירוש אז "שלך" איז "השולה דגים כו׳",
Rashi must preface "our Rabbis explained" — because were it not for this,
דארף רש״י מקדים זיין "פירשו רבותינו" — ווארום אלולא זאת,
the reasoning would incline to learn as Ibn Ezra says,
וואלט די סברא נוטה געווען צו לערנען ווי דער אבן עזרא זאגט,
that shalakh is a bird that "its natural habit is to cast its young":
אז שלך איז א פייגל וואס "מנהג תולדתו להשליך ילדיו״:
Since the word "shalakh" is closer
היות אז דער ווארט "שלך" איז נעענטער
(corresponding with all the letters)
(גלייכנדיק זיך מיט אלע אותיות)
to the language of casting than to the language of pulling out
צום לשון השלכה ווי צום לשון שולה
(and especially that its meaning is casting from above downward,
(ובפרט אז אין באדייט איז השלכה מלמעלה למטה,
the opposite of "pulling out" — from below upward)
דער היפוך פון ״שולה״ — מלמטה למעלה)
Therefore Rashi says "Our Rabbis explained this one who catches fish etc.',
דערפאר זאגט רש״י "פירשו רבותינו זה השולה דגים כו׳"׳,
that thus did "Our Rabbis" explain,
אז אזוי האבן מפרש געווען "רבותינו" ,

איז דאך ניט שייך צו בוחר זיין אין אן אנדער פירוש וואס איז מער לפי דרך הפשט,

The student asks a question: Just as with the shalakh there is the quality to "catch" fish,
פרעגט דער תלמיד א שאלה: כשם ווי ביים שלך איז דא די תכונה צו "שולה" זיין דגים,
so too with other birds of prey there is the quality to "catch" — another kind of prey — so why should specifically the fish-catcher be called by the name shalakh?
אזוי איז דאך אויך ביי אנדערע עופות טורפות פא־ ראן די תכונה צו ״שולה״ זיין — אן אנדער מין טרף — היינט פארוואס זאל מען דוקא דעם שולה־דגים אנרופן מיטן נאמען שלך?
Because of this Rashi adds "who takes fish <b>from the sea"</b>: all birds of prey take only things that are on the surface.
צוליב דעם איז רש״י מוסיף "השולה דגים מן הים" : אלע עופות הטורפות זיינען שולה בלויז זאכן וואס זיינען אויבנאויף.
But not so <b>this</b> bird,
משא״כ דער פייגל,
since it takes fish from the depth20
וויבאלד ער איז שולה דגים פון דער טיפעניש
— from the sea,
־ פון ים,
that the quality of lifting up and drawing out
וואס די תכונה פון ארויפהויבן און ארויסציען
("taking")
("שולה")
is with it in a prominent and great manner
איז ביי אים אין א בולט׳ן און גרויסן אופן
(not like with the other birds whose "taking" of their prey is from the dry land,
(ניט ווי ביי די אנדערע עופות וואס זייער "שולה" זיין דעם טרף איז פון דער יבשה,
or even from the sea but from the surface),
אדער אפילו פון ים אבער פון אויבנאויף),
therefore specifically for it is suited the name "shalach".
דערי־ בער איז דוקא פאר אים צוגעפאסט דער נאמען "שלך".
Y.
י.
Based on this one will also understand,
עפ״ז וועט מען אויך פאר־ שטיין,
what Rashi continues "and this is <b>that he translated</b> Onkelos and shelinuna",
וואם רש״י איז ממשיך "וזהו שתרגם אונקלוס ושלינונא",
because from this he brings a proof that it is possible to call the bird by the name "shalach" from the language <b>"sholeh"</b> — although in the <b>general</b> quality of "sholeh" it is <b>not</b> distinguished from other birds:
ווייל פון דעם ברענגט ער א ראי׳ אז ס׳איז שייך אנצורופן דעם פייגל מיטן נא־ מען ״שלך״ פון לשון ״שולה״ — הגם אז אין דער כללות התכונה פון "שולה" איז ער ניט אויסגעטיילט פון אנדערע פייגלאך:
From the fact that the name of the bird in Aramaic is <b>sheli</b>nuna — because Onkelos with his translation "veshelinuna" does not mean here to explain and elucidate the characteristics of the bird — he merely translates
פון דעם וואס דער נאמען פון דעם פויגל בלשון ארמי איז שלי נונא — ווארום אונקלוס מיט זיין מתרגם זיין "ושלינונא" מיינט דאך דא ניט מפרש ומבאר זיין די תכונות פון דעם פויגל — ער איז בלויז מתרגם
(as Rashi infers "and this is <b>that he translated</b> etc."),
(ווי רש״י איז מדייק "וזהו שתרגם כו׳"),
he translates its name into Aramaic: i.
ער זעצט איבער זיין נאמען אין לשון ארמי: ד.
e.
ה.
that the bird is <b>called</b> after the name that it is <b>sholah</b> 21,
אז דער פויגל ווערט גערופן על שם וואם ער איז שולה ,
therefore it suggests to say that also the name "shalach"
לייגט זיך דעריבער צו זאגן׳ אז אויך דער נאמען "שלך"
(in the Holy Tongue)
(בלשון קדש)
is because it is <b>sholah</b>,
איז מצד דעם וואס ער איז שולה ,
And therefore Rashi says the wording "and this is that he translated etc.",
און דערפאר זאגט רש״י דעם לשון "וזהו שתרגם כו׳",
because his proof from the Targum that for "shalach" the wording "sholah" fits,
ווייל זיין ראי׳ פון תרגום אז אויף "שלך" פאסט דער לשון "שולה",
is indeed through <b>explaining</b> the Targum22
איז טאקע דורך מפרש זיין דעם תרגום
: through his explanation that what Onkelos translates "veshelinuna" is that therefore the bird is called by this name because it is sholah — from this emerges the proof,
: דורך זיין ביאור אז דאס וואס אונקלוס איז מתרגם "ושלינונא" איז עס אז דער־ פאר הייסט דער פייגל מיט דעם נא־ מען מצד דעם וואס ער איז שולה — דערפון קומט ארויס די ראי׳,
that this is also the reason for the name "shalach"
אז דאס איז אויך דער טעם פון דעם נאמען "שלך"
(in the Holy Tongue),
(אין לשון קדש),
as above.
כנ״ל.
as above.

יא.
Based on the above,
ע״פ הנ״ל,
that Rashi seeks to explain how the names of the birds indicate their matter,
אז רש״י זוכט צו מפרש זיין ווי די שמות העופות ווייזן אויף זייער ענין,
one will also understand the reason that after Rashi explains that "כוס וינשוף" are "צואיטוש",
וועט מען אויך פאר־ שטיין דעם טעם וואס לאחרי ווי רש״י איז מפרש אז "כוס וינשוף" זיינען "צואיטוש",
he adds "that they cry out at night and have jaws like a man" — although the student understands French 23
איז ער מוסיף "שהם צועקים בלילה ויש להם לסתות כאדם" — הגם אז דער תלמיד פארשטייט פראנצויזיש
— because thereby he hints how the characteristics of "צואיטוש" are hinted in the names "כוס" and "ינשוף":
— ווייל דערמיט איז ער מרמז ווי די תכונות פון "צואיטוש" זיינען מרומז אין די נעמען "כוס" און "ינשוף":
"כוס" is from the term "מכוסה"24
״כוס״ איז פון לשון ״מכוסה״
— indicates something related to night
— ווייזט עם אויף עפעס א שייכות מיט לילה
(opposite of light,
(היפך פון אור,
day),
יום),
when everything is covered with the darkness of night; and so too with "ינשוף" that the name itself,
ווען אלץ איז פארדעקט מיט דער פינסטערניש פון נאכט; און אזוי אויך ביי "ינשוף" וואס דער נאמען גופא,
from the term "נשף" 25,
מלשון ״נשף״ ,
indicates night 24
ווייזט אויף לילה
— and their connection with night,
— און זייער שייכות מיט לילה,
Rashi teaches,
לערנט רש״י,
consists in that they are the "צואיטוש <b>that cry out at night</b>".
באשטייט אין דעם וואס זיי זיינען עס די "צואיטוש הצועקים בלילה ".
But with this alone Rashi is not in doubt.
אבער דערמיט אליין איז זיך רש״י ניט מסתפק.
Because there are still other kinds of birds with the quality that has a special connection to night — such as "tinshemet" which is "flying at night"26
ווארום ס׳זיינען דא נאך מינים פייגל מיט דער תכונה וואס האט א באזונדער שייכות מיט לילה — אזוי ווי "תנשמת" וואס איז "פורחת בלילה״
— one must say,
— מוז מען זאגן,
that that which "tzoitus" are called "kos" and "yanshuf" is
אז דאס וואס "צואיטוש" הייסן "כוס" און "ינשוף" איז
(not only because these names indicate "night",
(ניט בלויז דער־ פאר וואס אט די נעמען ווייזן אויף "לילה",
but)
נאר)
also because of additional qualities of these particular birds that are hinted at in "kos v'yanshuf".
אויך צוליב נאך תכונות פון די דאזיקע פייגלעך וואס זיינען מרומז אין "כוס וינשוף".
— And this is what Rashi adds "and they have jowls like a man": also this matter is hinted at in their names,
— און דאס איז וואס רש״י איז מוסיף "ויש להם לסתות כאדם": אויך דער ענין איז מרומז אין זייערע נע־ מען,
because by that which their cheeks are prominent,
ווייל דערמיט וואס זייערע באקן זיינען בולט׳ע,
full,
פולע,
as with humans
אזוי ווי ביי א מענטשן
(and not sunken as with other fowl)
(און ניט קיין איינגעפאלענע ווי ביי אנדערע עופות)
it is fitting to compare them to a "kos",
איז מתאים צו פארגלייכן זיי צו א "כוס",
which can take into itself water or other beverages;
וואס קען ארייננעמען אין זיך וואסער אדער אנדערע משקאות;
And so too regarding "ינשוף": the student has already learned in a previous sedra 27,
און אזוי אויך בנוגע "ינשוף": דער תלמיד האט שוין געלערנט אין א פריערדיקער סדרה ,
that "נשיפה" means blowing — and when blowing, the cheeks become full and prominent — and this is the indication of the name "ינשוף" for the צואיטוש which have "לסתות כאדם".
אז "נשיפה" מיינט בלאזן — און ביים בלאזן ווערן דאך די באקן פול און בולט — און דאס איז דער אנדייט פון נאמען "ינשוף" אויף צואיטוש וואס האבן "לסתות כאדם".
But with the matter of "ויש להם לסתות כאדם" alone Rashi is not satisfied,
אבער מיטן ענין פון "ויש להם לסתות כאדם" אליין באגנוגנט זיך ניט רש״י,
because that which "יש להם לסתות כאדם" has nothing to do with the characteristic,
ווייל דאס וואס "יש להם לסתות כאדם" האט ניט צו טאן מיט דער תכונה,
but with the form of the birds — and it is plausible to say that the name should express the characteristic,
נאר מיטן געשטאלט פון די פייגל — און ס׳איז מסתבר צו זאגן אז דער נאמען זאל אויסדריקן די תכונה,
which is more essential than the appearance
וואס איז מער עיקר־זאך ווי דער אויסזען
(and as one indeed sees by "שלך" which indicates the characteristic of "<b>השולה</b> דגים")
(און ווי מען זעט טאקע ביי "שלך" וואס צייגט אויף דער תכונה פון ״ השולה דגים״)
— therefore Rashi takes as the first detail the matter of "הצועקים בלילה" which is the <b>characteristic</b> of the צואיטוש; only since this is still not sufficient,
— דערפאר נעמט אן רש״י אלס ערשטן פרט דעם ענין פון "הצועקים בלילה" וואס דאם איז די תכונה פון צואיטוש; נאר היות אז דאס איז נאך ניט מספיק,
as above,
כנ״ל,
he therefore <b>adds</b> "ויש להם לסתות כאדם".
איז ער דעריבער מוסיף "ויש להם לסתות כאדם".
12.
יב.
But here the student asks a question 28
אבער דא פרעגט דער תלמיד א שאלה
: from the very fact that one bird is called "cos" and another "yanshuf" it is thus implied,
: פון דעם אליין וואס איין פייגל הייסט "כוס" און אייגע "ינשוף" איז דאך משמע,
that the difference between the two species of birds is expressed in the <b>difference</b> between their names.
אז דער חילוק צווישן די צוויי מינים פייגל דריקט זיך אויס אין דעם חילוק צווישן זייערע נעמען.
But according to the above that the two names
אבער לפי הנ״ל אז די צוויי נעמען
(both "cos" and "yanshuf")
(סיי "כוס" סיי "ינשוף")
both indicate the same characteristic
ווייזן ביידע אויף דער זעלבער תכונה
("they cry at night")
("צועקים בלילה")
and the same appearance
און אויף דעם זעלבן אויסזען
("jaws like a person")
("לסתות כאדם״)
— that is,
— דאס הייסט,
that the names indicate only the general characteristics of the owl,
אז די נעמען ווייזן בלויז אויף די תכונות כלליות פון צואיטוש,
but not the particular characteristics in which one type of owl is distinguished from the other — then why is one owl called by the name "cos" and the other by the name "yanshuf"?
אבער ניט אויף די תכונות פרטיות אין וועלכע עס איז אפגעטיילט איין סארט צואיט פון דעם צווייטן — היינט פארוואס הייסט פארט איין צואיט מיטן נאמען "כוס" און דער צווייטער מיטן נאמען "ינשוף" ?
Therefore Rashi adds "and another similar to it that is called yibetz",
דעריבער איז רש״י מוסיף "ועוד אחר דומה לו שקורין ייבץ",
that there is another bird that is only <b>similar</b>
אז ס׳איז דא נאך א פייגל וואס איז בלויז דומה
(<b>similar</b> in form29)
( ענליך אין געשטאלט )
to the owl,
צו צואיט,
i.
ד.
e.
ה.
that it has only "jaws like a person"30,
אז זי האט בלויז "לסתות כאדם" ,
but it does not cry at night31
זי איז אבער ניט צועק בלילה
— and consequently one can say,
— ובמילא קען מען זאגן,
that the difference between "cos" and "yanshuf" is,
אז דער חילוק צווישן "כוס" און "ינשוף" איז,
that one of them also indicates32
אז איינער פון זיי ווייזט אויך
the characteristic of "cries at night" and is called "owl"; and one of them indicates <b>only</b> the matter of "jaws like a person" and it is the name for "yibetz".
אויף דער תכונה פון "צועק בלילה" און ווערט גערופן "צואיטה"; און איינער פון זיי ווייזט בלויז אויף דעם ענין פון "לסתות כאדם" און ער איז דער נאמען פאר "ייבץ".
But he has no proof
אבער ער האט ניט קיין הוכחה
(according to the simple interpretation33)
(עפ״י דרך הפשט )
which is cos and which is yanshuf"34.
וועלכער איז כוס און וועלכער איז ינשוף" .
But Rashi gives this explanation only as a <b>second</b> interpretation,
אבער דעם פשט זאגט רש״י בלויז אלס א צווייטן פירוש,
because according to this explanation it would turn out that one of the two names indicates only the form of the bird and not its nature — and it is not logical to say,
ווייל לויט דעם פשט וועט דאך אויסקומען אז איינער פון די צוויי נעמען ווייזט בלויז אויף דעם געשטאלט פון דער פייגל און ניט אויף איר תכונה — און אין שכל לייגט זיך צו זאגן,
that when a thing is called by a name that denotes something in the thing,
אז בשעת א זאך ווערט גערופן מיט א נאמען וואס באצייכנט עפעס אין דער זאך,
it is done first and foremost in relation to the nature of the thing — therefore Rashi initially adopts as his <b>primary</b> interpretation "they are tzou-itus",
ווערט עס צום אלעם ערשטן געטאן בשייכות דער תכונה פון דער זאך — דערפאר נעמט רש״י אן בתחלת ועיקר פירושו "הם צו־ איטוש",
according to which it turns out that the names "kos and yanshuf" indicate the nature,
וואס לויט דעם קומט אויס אז די נעמען "כוס וינשוף" ווייזן אויף די תכונה,
the nature of "those that cry out at night",
די תכונה פון "הצועקים בלילה",
And this is also the reasoning that Rashi precedes his explanation of "hashalach" before he explains "kos" — because his explanation of "hashalach — this is the one that catches fish"
און דאס איז אויך די הסברה וואס רש״י איז מקדים זיין פירוש אויף "השלך" איידער ער איז מפרש "כוס" — ווייל זיין פי׳ אין ״השלך — זה השולה דגים"
(that the name "shalach" is because of the <b>nature</b> of the bird)
(אז דער נאמען "שלך" איז צוליב דער תכונה פון די פויגל)
proves,
איז מוכיח,
that presumably it is likewise regarding the other names of the birds.
אז מסתם איז אזוי אויך ביי די אנדערע שמות העופות.
Therefore it is plausible
וואס מצד דעם איז מסתבר
(as explained above)
(כפי׳ הא׳)
that kos and yanshuf are tzou-itus,
אז כוס וינשוף הם צואיטוש,
as above,
כנ״ל.
as above.
כנ״ל.
as above.
כנ״ל.
13.
יג.
From the matters of "the wine of Torah" in Rashi's commentary of ours: Regarding the shark,
פון די ענינים פון "יינה של תורה" אין פירוש רש״י דידן:בנוגע צו שלך,
the Gemara says2
זאגט די גמרא
: R' Yochanan, when he saw a shark, said "Your judgments"35
: ר׳ יוחנן כי הוה חזי שלך אמר משפטיך"
great deep.
תהום רבה.
Rashi translates: And Your judgments even in the great deep that You prepared a shark to judge and to take Your vengeance on the fish of the sea to kill those destined to die.
טייטשט רש״י: ומשפטיך אף בתהום רבה שזמנת שלך לשפוט ולעשות נקמתך בדגת הים להמית המזומנים למות.
And from the Gemara the Alter Rebbe brought a proof36
און פון דער גמרא האט דער אלטער רבי געבראכט א ראי׳
to the method of the Baal Shem Tov that <b>all</b> matters are in Divine Providence — <b>not</b> like those who say that Divine Providence is only in the human species37
צו שיטת הבעש״ט אז אלע ענינים זיינען בהשגחה פרטית — ניט ווי די וואס זאגן אז השגח״פ איז נאר במין האדם
— because one sees indeed,
— ווארום מען זעט דאך,
that also upon fish there exists a judgment and sentence <b>particular</b>,
אז אויך אויף דגים איז פאראן א דין ומשפט פרטי ,
and the Most High prepares the shark that it should catch <b>the</b> fish
און דער אויבערשטער איז מזמין דעם שלך ער זאל כאפן די דגים
(particulars)
(פרטים)
upon which the judgment above was decreed.
אויף וועלכע ס׳איז אפגע׳פסק׳נט געווארן דער דין שלמעלה.
And this matter Rashi hints at with the words "our Rabbis explained: this one who pulls fish from the sea",
און אט דעם ענין איז רש״י מרמז מיט די ווערטער "פירשו רבותינו זה השולה דגים מן הים",
as follows.
כדלקמן.
14.
יד.
It is known 38,
ס׳איז ידוע ,
that the word "nature" is from the term "they sank39
אז דער ווארט "טבע" איז פון לשון "טבעו
in the Red Sea".
בים סוף".
And the explanation of this is: just as things that are drowned in the sea,
און דער פירוש בזה איז: כשם ווי די זאכן וואס זיינען פארטרונקען אין ים,
they are nevertheless present there in completeness,
זיינען זיי דאך פאראן דארט בשלימות,
it is only — that one does <b>not see</b> them
ס׳איז נאר — וואס מען זעט זיי ניט
(because of that which the sea covers them)
(מצד דערויף וואס דער ים איז אויף זיי מעלים)
; so too is the matter of "nature": also in it <b>there is</b> Divinity,
; אזוי איז אויך דער ענין פון "טבע": אויך אין אים איז פאראן אלקות,
and as mentioned above that <b>all</b> events that are in the world <b>in all</b> their details and particulars of particulars are with particular providence from the Most High,
וכנ״ל אז אלע מאורעות וואס אין וועלט בכל פרטיהם ופרטי פרטיהם זיינען בהשגחה פרטית פונעם אויבערשטן,
only what then — the garments of nature are
נאר וואס דען — די לבושי הטבע זיינען
(according to the will of the Creator made such that they are)
(לויט׳ן רצון הבורא געמאכט אזוי אז זיי זיינען)
<b>covering</b> the Divine vitality,
מעלים אויף דעם חיות אלקי,
so that one should not see it <b>openly</b>.
אז מען זאל אים ניט זען בגלוי .
And this is the hint in the language of Rashi "השלך — פירשו רבותינו זה השולה דגים מן הים",
און דאס איז דער רמז אין לשון רש״י ״השלך — פירשו רבותינו זה השולה דגים מן הים",
that what "פירשו רבותינו"40
אז דאס וואס "פירשו רבותינו"
regarding "שלך" — the explanation that "רבותינו" say in connection with it "משפטיך תהום רבה",
בנוגע צו "שלך" — דער פירוש וואס "רבותינו" זאגן בשייכות מיט אים "משפטיך תהום רבה",
<b>That</b>41
דאס
("זה")
("זה")
is what takes out
איז וואס נעמט ארויס
("השולה")
("השולה")
the "דגים" from their concealment and hiding — "ים":
די "דגים" פון זיי־ ער העלם והסתר — "ים":
Were it not for the aforementioned Gemara about "שלך",
אלולא די גמרא הנ״ל וועגן "שלך",
one could think that the conduct of fish is by way of chance, heaven forbid
וואלט מען געקענט מיינען אז די הנהגה ביי דגים איז בדרך מקרה ח״ו
"מה דגים שבים כל הגדול מחבירו בולע כו׳"]
"מה דגים שבים כל הגדול מחבירו בולע כו׳"]
; and the aforementioned explanation of רבותינו regarding "שלך",
; און דער פירוש הנ״ל פון רבותינו בנוגע צו "שלך",
takes out the fish from the concealment of the sea and shows that their conduct is with particular providence.
נעמט ארויס די דגים פון דעם העלם הים און ווייזט אז זייער הנהגה איז בהשגחה פרטית.
And from this one learns also regarding all other animals43,
און דערפון לערנט מען אפ אויך בנוגע צו אלע אנדערע בעלי חיים ,
and also regarding vegetation and even regarding the inanimate44
און אויך בנוגע צו צומח און אפילו בנוגע צו דומם
— that <b>all</b> their matters are <b>with Divine Providence</b>.
— אז אלע זייערע ענינים זיינען בהשגחה פרטית .
