English translation 2

In this week's Torah portion1

English translation 3

it is told about the tribes of Gad and Reuben — that since they had "much livestock",

English translation 4

they asked that they be given their inheritance on the other side of the Jordan

English translation 5

(which was a "land of livestock")

English translation 6

; and finally Moses our teacher agreed to this2,

English translation 7

and — "And Moses gave to the tribe of Gad and to the tribe of Reuben and to half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon etc. Og etc."3.

English translation 8

The question arises: Half the tribe of Manasseh — where is his name mentioned?

English translation 9

! In all these discussions between Moses our teacher and the tribes of Gad and Reuben, it is not mentioned even once that also "half the tribe of Manasseh" participated in the request that they be given an inheritance on the other side of the Jordan4.

English translation 10

In the Yerushalmi5

English translation 11

it stands

English translation 12

(regarding the bringing of first fruits),

English translation 13

that there is a difference between the inheritance of the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben and the inheritance of the half-tribe of Menashe: In connection with the inheritance of the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben it is not fitting to say "which6

English translation 14

You have given me

English translation 15

(God)

English translation 16

" — because "I have taken for myself from myself"7,

English translation 17

And therefore

English translation 18

(according to the opinion of R. Yose HaGelili)

English translation 19

they did not bring first fruits,

English translation 20

but regarding "the half-tribe of Menashe did not take for themselves" — "Dotan8

English translation 21

gave to them Moses etc. is written,

English translation 22

and they did not choose for themselves initially like the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad".

English translation 23

One must have an explanation: Since "they did not choose [it] for themselves initially" — why did Moshe Rabbeinu offer them a heritage on the other side of the Jordan?

English translation 24

The Ramban

English translation 25

explains that "at first the tribe of Menashe did not come before him,

English translation 26

but when he divided the land for the two tribes, he saw that it was a land larger than was fitting for them, and he sought whoever would want to settle with them,

English translation 27

and there were men from the tribe of Menashe who wanted it, perhaps they were men of livestock, and he gave them their portion."

English translation 28

But superficially this is not understandable.

English translation 29

For Moses our teacher was indeed very dissatisfied with the request of the children of Gad and the children of Reuben "Let this land be given ..

English translation 30

as a possession"11

English translation 31

(not "the land which He gave them

English translation 32

the L-rd"12),

English translation 33

until he compared them to the spies13

English translation 34

! It is only that after they promised "And we will be armed hastily etc."14

English translation 35

and accepted this with a double condition15

English translation 36

and so,

English translation 37

did Moses our teacher agree to it —

English translation 38

It is indeed completely perplexing: how does it come that Moses our teacher should initially seek and propose — "He sought whoever would want to settle with them"

English translation 39

(and not inherit in the "land which the Lord gave them")16,

English translation 40

and — therefore that "it is a land greater than the fitting"17

English translation 41

(for the children of Gad and the children of Reuben)18?

English translation 42

Or: from that which in the verse is not mentioned at all that half the tribe of Manasseh had a desire to take a part in Transjordan — they are mentioned only at "And Moses gave to them, etc."19

English translation 43

— it is implied,

English translation 44

that this came entirely from the side

English translation 45

Moshe20

משה

English translation 46

(And according to the simple language of the aforementioned Yerushalmi "they did not take from themselves").

English translation 47

2.

ב.

English translation 48

One will understand this with an introduction to what one finds in Midrash21

English translation 49

regarding the hints in the offerings of the princes for the dedication of the altar — that so many details of the offering of Menashe were connected with the inheritance of the land,

English translation 50

and one of them: "And for the peace-offering, two oxen" corresponding to the tribe of Menashe which was divided into two and took two portions in the land, half on the other side of the Jordan and half in the land of Canaan.

English translation 51

From this it is understood,

English translation 52

that the half-tribe of Menasheh taking a portion on the other side of the Jordan,

English translation 53

is considered an advantage

English translation 54

(as we see by the other hints of the offerings of the princes22,

English translation 55

that they indicated various advantages and good matters etc.).

English translation 56

It turns out,

English translation 57

that there is a fundamental difference between the inheritance of the children of Gad and the children of Reuven and the inheritance of the half-tribe of Menasheh23

English translation 58

Regarding the inheritance of the children of Gad and the children of Reuben on the other side of the Jordan, it stands in the Midrash24,

English translation 59

that even after they received approval for their request,

English translation 60

it is considered an undesirable matter — "You loved your cattle more than the souls ...

English translation 61

about them it is said25

English translation 62

a hasty inheritance etc.";

נחלה מבוהלת וגו׳";

English translation 63

But by half the tribe of Menasheh this was not only not a deficiency,

English translation 64

but on the contrary — a lofty matter,

English translation 65

which is connected with a special sacrifice to the Most High!

English translation 66

And they loved their money and settled for themselves outside the Land of Israel"26,

English translation 67

These are the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad. The Holy One, blessed be He, said to them: You loved your cattle...

English translation 68

About them it is said: An inheritance hastily gained etc."24,

English translation 69

not mentioning thereby "half the tribe of Manasseh"22

English translation 70

— because that half the tribe of Manasseh took a portion on the other side of the Jordan — was not due to love of money28,

English translation 71

rather it was a good matter29

English translation 72

(and furthermore,

English translation 73

they did not choose it themselves,

English translation 74

rather Moshe Rabbeinu gave it to them,

English translation 75

as mentioned above)].

English translation 76

One needs an explanation: What is the virtue in receiving a portion on the other side of the Jordan?

English translation 77

Air: from the precision of the language of the Midrash21

English translation 78

— "corresponding to the tribe of Menasheh that was divided into two and took two portions in the land, half on the other side of the Jordan and half in the land of Canaan" — implies,

English translation 79

that the advantage is not so much in their receiving a portion

English translation 80

(Air)

English translation 81

on the other side of the Jordan,

English translation 82

but rather that which "was divided into two".

English translation 83

It is not understood: wherein consists the superiority of dividing their inheritance "into two"30?

English translation 84

that this is counted as a punishment — "Menasseh caused the tribes to be torn, therefore his inheritance was torn, half in the land of the Jordan and half in the land of Canaan": but from this aforementioned Midrash by the offerings of the princes it emerges,

English translation 85

that this is a matter of superiority32].

English translation 86

3.

ג.

English translation 87

And one may say the explanation of this:

English translation 88

The Torah relates33

English translation 89

"And Hashem showed — to Moshe Rabbeinu before his passing — all the land etc. And Hashem said to him: This is the land which I swore to Avraham etc. to your seed I will give it; I have shown it to you with your eyes etc."

English translation 90

And it is understood,

English translation 91

that this was not merely for the sake of seeing alone,

English translation 92

rather Moshe's seeing effected a matter of "sanctification"24,

English translation 93

as the Gemara25

English translation 94

says "Whoever

English translation 95

that the Holy One, blessed be He, showed to Moshe

English translation 96

(as it is written: And Hashem showed him etc.)

English translation 97

is obligated in tithe."

English translation 98

Essence of the explanations why specifically Moshe Rabbeinu had to see "the entire land"

English translation 99

(and perform the "Kiddush")

English translation 100

All matters which are connected with the essential existence of Jews were performed through Moshe Rabbeinu.

English translation 101

As we find regarding Torah — that Moshe received Torah from Sinai and transmitted it etc.36,

English translation 102

and everything that a veteran student will innovate in the future was all given to Moshe from Sinai37.

English translation 103

And it is known the saying38

English translation 104

that "There will not be again another giving of the Torah."

English translation 105

Because also that which Mashiach will teach with Jews

English translation 106

(in the language of Rashi39)

English translation 107

"the secret of reasons and hidden mysteries"

English translation 108

(of the Torah),

English translation 109

and furthermore

English translation 110

(in the language of the Midrash40),

English translation 111

"A new Torah from Me shall go forth" — was already given at the giving of the Torah41

English translation 112

(by Moshe Rabbeinu),

English translation 113

and Mashiach will reveal it.

English translation 114

Similarly, one finds regarding the redemption of Israel,

English translation 115

that the entire matter of the redemption,

English translation 116

the atmosphere of the future redemption is connected with Moshe Rabbeinu42.

English translation 117

And this is also one of the explanations that at the redemption

English translation 118

that is to come in the future, the verse43

English translation 119

emphasizes "As in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt, I will show him wonders"

English translation 120

(And similarly in additional verses44

English translation 121

the future redemption is compared to the Exodus from Egypt)

English translation 122

— because since the future redemption will be a greater redemption than the redemption from Egypt45

English translation 123

(a complete and eternal redemption after which there is no exile)

English translation 124

— however, the redemption from Egypt

English translation 125

(through Moshe Rabbeinu)

English translation 126

is the root and gives the power for the future redemption46.

English translation 127

And therefore also

English translation 128

(inheritance of)

English translation 129

the Land — being a fundamental matter in the existence of the people of Israel47

English translation 130

(in addition to that this is a fundamental matter in the fulfillment of the Torah and mitzvos,

English translation 131

many of which are dependent on the Land48)

English translation 132

— is connected with the action of Moshe Rabbeinu.

English translation 133

And therefore,

English translation 134

although "there you shall not cross"49,

English translation 135

he had

האט

English translation 136

(at least)

English translation 137

to have the "I have shown you with your eyes"49.

English translation 138

D.

ד.

English translation 139

Regarding the matter of the inheritance of the Land one finds,

English translation 140

that in the future there will be a fundamental novelty — "Hashem your G-d will expand your border"50

English translation 141

Jews will then come—

English translation 142

Come

קומען

English translation 143

(Not only the land of the seven nations,

English translation 144

but)

English translation 145

also the land of the Kenite, Kenizzite, and Kadmonite51.

English translation 146

And since all matters must “pass through” Moses our teacher — and as above,

English translation 147

that even the “new Torah that will go forth from Me,”

English translation 148

which the King Messiah will reveal,

English translation 149

was given through Moses — one must say,

English translation 150

that also the matter of the inheritance of the land of the Kenite, Kenizzite, and Kadmonite

English translation 151

(which were not included in the “And Hashem showed him”52)

English translation 152

has a connection to Moses our teacher53.

English translation 153

And it is to say,

English translation 154

that the reason why Moshe Rabbeinu gave a portion in Ever HaYarden to half the tribe of Menasheh,

English translation 155

because the matter of Ever HaYarden is more

English translation 156

and analogous to the matter of "Hashem your G-d will enlarge your border",

English translation 157

it is an addition upon "your border".

English translation 158

Because even according to the opinions54

English translation 159

that also Ever HaYarden is included in the lands that were promised to Avraham in the Covenant Between the Parts — it is nevertheless an addition upon "the land of Canaan according to its borders"55

English translation 160

(as they are enumerated in Parshat Masei56)

English translation 161

— analogous to ,

English translation 162

Hashem your G-d will enlarge your border".

English translation 163

that in addition to this that also the land of Keini Kenizi and Kadmoni — Edom Moav and Amon57

English translation 164

— are in

English translation 165

(and adjacent to)

English translation 166

Ever HaYarden58

English translation 167

— the conquest of the land of Sichon and Og included a part of the land of Ammon and Moav,

English translation 168

as Chazal59

English translation 169

"Ammon and Moav were purified through Sichon"].

English translation 170

And it can be said that this is a fundamental difference between the inheritance of the children of Gad and the children of Reuven and the inheritance of the half-tribe of Menasheh:

English translation 171

The inheritance of the sons of Gad and the sons of Reuben on the other side of the Jordan is

English translation 172

(a)

(א)

English translation 173

came from their request,

English translation 174

(b)

(ב)

English translation 175

because of that which "they loved their money" and

English translation 176

(c)

(ג)

English translation 177

in a manner that because of this they were ready to forgo their portion in the land "which the Lord gave them"12.

English translation 178

But not so by half the tribe of Menasheh, it was in the opposite manner — the portion on the other side of the Jordan Moshe Rabbeinu gave them,

English translation 179

and through this the inheritance of the land at the first entry was a likeness and example of the inheritance of the land in the future60

enumerates them — "the six cities of refuge etc. besides them you shall give forty-two cities".

And afterwards comes the section of the cities of refuge77,

and the Torah says78

that the six cities of refuge,

were "three cities" on the other side of the Jordan and three — "in the land of Canaan".

English translation 262

It is a wonder: since we see that the matter of receiving a heritage in Ever HaYarden was not a desirable thing

— then how is it that the Almighty should command that one should give the Levites cities for dwelling in Ever HaYarden?

English translation 274

According to plain meaning, one must say: when saying to give cities to the Levites "to dwell",

English translation 275

the verse81

English translation 276

is precise "Command the children of Israel and they shall give to the Levites from the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell".

English translation 277

d.

ד.

English translation 278

e.

ה.

English translation 279

It is not the explanation that the cities are given to them as an inheritance from the Most High82,

English translation 280

rather this is an obligation upon the children of Israel,

English translation 281

that they must give a portion of their inheritance to the Levites

English translation 282

(in the manner83

English translation 283

as they must separate tithe from their grain and fruits etc.).

English translation 284

And since Jews have actually received an inheritance in Transjordan,

English translation 285

therefore automatically the obligation applies upon the Jews to give a portion of their inheritance for the Levites84.

English translation 286

In other words: this does not mean,

English translation 287

that the Torah initially established that the place of the inheritance of a part of the Levites is specifically in Transjordan,

English translation 288

rather the Torah obligated Israel to give a part of their inheritance for the Levites.

English translation 289

And it is no question — how is it that Levites,

English translation 290

whose essence is service and ministry in the Temple,

English translation 291

should have their cities in Transjordan?

English translation 292

— Because not all Levites were occupied

English translation 293

(at the same time)

English translation 294

in the service in the Temple; and as we see from this itself that they were given forty-eight cities85

English translation 295

to dwell.

English translation 296

Moreover: it is explicit in Scripture that one must give the Levites "open land for the cities around them...

English translation 297

for their cattle and for their possessions and for all their living creatures"86.

English translation 298

It can be,

English translation 299

that among the sons of Levi there were also cattlemen87,

English translation 300

for whom it is fitting to live in Transjordan,

English translation 301

a land of cattle.

English translation 302

1.

י.

English translation 303

After all, however, this is not entirely smooth.

English translation 304

Because knowing that the main place of the inheritance of Jews must be in the land of Canaan —

English translation 305

why should a Levite want to live in Transjordan?

English translation 306

And especially since we find that the tribe of Levi was not drawn into88

English translation 307

the sin of the spies89

English translation 308

(like the rest of Israel)

English translation 309

— then certainly there was among them a strong desire to enter the land of Israel!

English translation 310

According to what was explained above regarding half the tribe of Menasheh,

English translation 311

one must say,

English translation 312

that this is precisely the proof — and with emphasis:

English translation 313

The aforementioned matter,

English translation 314

that receiving a heritage in Transjordan is considered an undesirable thing,

English translation 315

is only when it is in the manner that the children of Gad and the children of Reuben wanted it

English translation 316

(because of that which "they loved their money").

English translation 317

But the very taking of Transjordan as a place of heritage can be,

English translation 318

is,

איז,

English translation 319

on the contrary,

English translation 320

a likeness and example to the inheritance of the land in the future to come,

English translation 321

as mentioned above.

English translation 322

And therefore,

English translation 323

is on the contrary: specifically by the tribe of Levi,

English translation 324

who were not ensnared in the sin of the spies,

English translation 325

because by them was love of the land most of all

English translation 326

(in the manner of Menashe90),

English translation 327

by them was the settlement in the land as an example for the future,

English translation 328

that they had cities for dwelling
