It has already been spoken several times,
מ׳האט שוין גערעדט כמה פעמים,
that the essence of Rashi's commentary on the Torah is to explain the plain meaning of the verse
אז ענינו פון פירוש רש״י על התורה איז צו מפרש זיין פשוטו של מקרא
(as Rashi says in several places in his commentary1).
(ווי רש״י זאגט בכמה מקומות בפירושו ).
And in the places where Rashi brings an "aggadah" — it is as Rashi himself says2
און אין די ערטער וואו רש״י ברענגט אן ״אגדה״ — איז עם ווי רש״י אליין זאגט
: and I have not come except
: ואני לא באתי אלא
(for the plain meaning of the verse and)
(לפשוטו של מקרא ו)
for the aggadah that settles the words of the verse, each word in its proper place.
לאגדה המיישבת דברי המקרא דבר דבור על אופניו.
That is,
דאס הייסט,
that Rashi brings an aggadah only a)
אז רש״י ברענגט אן אגדה בלויז א)
when there is a difficulty in the plain meaning of the verse that requires a resolution,
ווען עם איז דא א שווערקייט אין פשט המקרא וואם פא־ דערט א ישוב,

און ב)
the ,
די ,
aggadah
אגדה

settles the words of the verse";
מיישבת דברי המקרא";
Thus, in the places where the verse can be interpreted literally without any difficulty — Rashi does not bring any "aggadah"
משא״ב אין די ערטער וואו דער מקרא קען געטייטשט ווערן כפשוטו ממש אן קיין שווערקייט — ברענגט ניט רש״י קיין "אגדה"
(even not such an aggadah that "fits" into the language of the verse "a matter spoken in its proper way").
(אפילו ניט אזא אגדה וואס ״פאםט״ ארײן אין לשון המקרא "דבר דבור על אופניו").
Based on this, a great wonder arises regarding a verse in our parshah,
עפ״ז ווערט א תמי׳ גדולה בנוגע א פסוק בפרשתנו,
where one finds that
וואו מען געפינט אז
(most)
(רוב)
literal commentators interpret it according to its simple meaning,
פשטנים זיינען עם מפרש כפירושו הפשוט,
and specifically Rashi interprets it
און דוקא רש״י איז עם מפרש

according to a derash!
לויט א דרש!
Among the first statements that Balaam said in praise of Israel,
צווישן די ערשטע דיבורים וואס בלעם האט געזאגט בשבחם של ישראל,
is the verse3
איז דער פסוק
— "For from the top of rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him; behold, a people that dwells alone, etc."
— "כי מראש צורים אראנו ומגבעות אשורנו הן עם לבדד ישכון גו׳".
are the simple interpretations4
זיינען פשטנים
(Ibn Ezra5,
(אבן עזרא ,
Rashbam,
רשב״ם,
Ramban,
רמב״ן,
Ralbag and others)
רלב״ג ועוד)
interpret the words "from the top of rocks I see him" according to their simple meaning,
מפרש די ווערטער "מראש צורים אראנו" כפשוטם,
that Balaam was then standing on a mountain peak
אז בלעם איז דעמאלט געשטאנען אויף א שפיץ בארג
("top of rocks")
("ראש צורים")
from where he saw the Jews
פון וואנעט ער האט געזען די אידן
("I see him"),
("אראנו"),
and seeing them he praised them — "behold, a people that dwells alone, etc."
און זעענדיק זיי האט ער זיי משבח געווען — "הן עם לבדד ישכון גו׳".
Rashi, however, stands on the words "For from the top of the rocks I see him" and explains
רש״י אבער שטעלט זיך אויף די ווער־ טער "כי מראש צורים אראנו" און איז מפרש
(in the manner of the Midrash6)
(ע״ד ווי אין מדרש )
: I look at their beginning and at the start of their roots, and I see them established and strong in these rocks and hills through the patriarchs and matriarchs.
: אני מסתכל בראשיתם ובתחלת שרשיהם ואני רואה אותם מיוסדים וחזקים בצורים וגבעות הללו על ידי אבות ואמהות.
It is entirely not understood: Why does Rashi abandon7
איז אינגאנצן ניט מובן: פארוואס לאזט אפ רש״י
the simple interpretation of "From the top of the rocks I see him"8
דעם פירוש הפשוט פון "מראש צורים אראנו"
and interpret the words according to a homiletic exposition9?
און טייטשט די ווערטער לויט א דרש ?

Commentators10
מפרשים
explain,
זיינען מבאר,
that according to the simple interpretation it is difficult — what relevance is there to tell where Balaam was standing then?
אז לויטן פירוש הפשוט איז שווער — וואם איז דא נוגע צו דערציילן וואו בלעם איז דעמאלט געשטאנען?
And therefore one says
און דערפאר זאגט מען
(and the Midrash expounds),
(און דרש׳נט דער מדרש),
that also
אז אויר
"From the top of the rocks etc." is a part of the praises that Balaam said about the Jews.
"מראש צורים וגו׳" איז א טייל פון די שבחים וואם בלעם האט געזאגט וועגן אידן.
But according to the simple meaning, this is no question at all,
אבער לויטן דרך הפשט איז דאם כלל קיין קשיא ניט,
And on the contrary — from the continuation of the verses it is absolutely necessary
ואדרבה — פון המשך הכתובים איז גאר מוכרח
(at first glance)
(לכאורה)
to interpret simply:
צו׳ טייטשן כפשוטו:
After Balaam finished the first statements of praises and blessings upon the Jews,
נאך דעם ווי בלעם האט פארענדיקט די ערשטע דיבורים פון שבחים וברכות אויף אידן,
Balak said to Balaam: "What have you done to me? To curse etc. and behold you have blessed etc. Please go with me to another place from where you will see him; only the edge of him you will see and all of him you will not see etc."11,
האט בלק געזאגט צו בלעס׳ן: "מה עשית לי לקוב גו׳ והנה ברכת גו׳ לך נא אתי אל מקום אחר אשר תראנו משם אפם קצהו תראה וכולו לא תראה וגו'" ,
And from this it is forced,
וואט דערפון איז געדרונגען,
that Balak thought that the reason that Balaam had previously blessed the Jews was that he had seen "all of him".
אז בלק האט געמיינט אז די סיבה יפאר־ וואם בלעם האט פריער געבענטשט אידן איז געווען דאס וואם ער האט געזען "כולו".
Where does it say earlier that Balaam saw the people of Israel "entirely"?
וואו שטייט פריער אז בלעם האט געזען דעם עם ישראל "כולו"
(And on the contrary: earlier12
(ואדרבה: פריער
it says even "And Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal13
שטייט גאר "ויקח בלק אח בלעם ויעלהו במות בעל
and from there he saw
וירא משם
(only)
(נאר)
the edge14
קצה
of the people"15)?
העם״ )?
— So when one translates the words "For from the top of the rocks I see him" according to its simple meaning,
— איז ווען מ׳טייטשט די ווערטער "כי מראש צורים אראנו" כפשוטו,
then there is no question: Balaam himself said it and emphasized — "From the top of the rocks I see him",
איז דאם קיין שאלה ניט: בלעם אליין האט עם געזאגט און מדגיש געווען — "מראש צורים אראנו",
and moreover he said it as a beginning
און נאכמער ער האט דאס גע־ זאגט אלם התחלה
(and an explanation in a hint)
(און ביאור ברמז)
to the blessings that follow in the continuation of the speech16.
צו די ברכות שבהמשך הדיבור .
It turns out,
קומט אוים,
that specifically according to the simple interpretation of "For from the top of the rocks I see him" the continuation of the verses is understood.
אז דוקא לויטן פירוש הפשוט אין "כי מראש צורים אראנו" איז מובן דער המשך הכתובים.

ג.
Air must be understood [in the] language of Rashi:
אויר דארף מען פארשטיין לשון רש״י:
The source of Rashi's commentary — that the verse speaks about the fundamentality and strength of Jews from the side of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs — is in the Midrash17,
דער מקור פון פירוש רש״י — אז דער פסוק רעדט וועגן דער גרונטי־ קייט און שטארקייט פון אידן מצד די אבות ואמהות — איז אין מדרש ,
but there the wording is: "For from the top of the rocks18
אבער דארט איז דער לשון: "כי מראש צורים
these are the Patriarchs, and from the hills these are the Matriarchs."
אלו אבות ומגבעות אלו אמהות".
And the foundation of the exposition is19
און דער יסוד פונעם דרש איז
that which one finds20
דאס וואס מען געפינט
that the "Patriarchs" are called
אז די "אבות" ווערן אנגערופן
(in several verses21)
(בכמה פסוקים )
"mountains"
"הרים"
as it stands in — Isaiah23
ווי עם שטייט אין— ישעי׳
"Look to the rock from which you were hewn etc., look to Abraham your father etc."].
"הביטו אל צור חצבתם גו׳ הביטו אל אברהם אביכם גו׳"].
It is not understood: a)
איז ניט מובן: א)
Why does Rashi say the wording "by means of fathers and mothers",
פארוואם זאגט רש״י דעם לשון "על ידי אבות ואמהות",
not like the wording of the Midrash — "these are fathers ..
ניט ווי לשון המדרש — ״אלו אבות ..
these are mothers"?
אלו אמהות"?
b)
ב)
Why does Rashi not bring any proofs from verses24
פארוואם ברענגט ניט רש״י קיינע ראיות פון פסוקים
that "Tzurim" is a term for "fathers" — which would have strengthened
אז "צורים" איז א כינוי אויר ״אבות״ — וואם דאם וואלט מחזק געווען
(at the very least)
(לכל הפחות)
that the derash is compatible
אז דער דרש איז מתאים
(also)
(אויר)
with the plain meaning of Scripture?
מיט פשוטו של מקרא?
However, when one delves well into Rashi's wording, it is proven,
אמנם כד דייקת שפיר בלשון רש״י איז מוכח,
on the contrary,
אדרבה,
that he is indeed out to change,
אז ער איז טאקע אויסן לשנות,
to explain not like the Midrash that "Rosh Tzurim these are fathers and Migba'ot these are mothers",
צו מפרש זיין ניט ווי דער מדרש אז "ראש צורים אלו אבות ומגבעות אלו אמהות",
but as Rashi is precise in his wording: "I look at their beginning and at the start of their roots and I see them — the Jews — founded
נאר ווי רש״י איז מדקדק בלשונו: "אני מסתכל בראשיתם ובתחלת שרשיהם ואני רואה אותם — די אידן — מיוסדים
(in their roots)
(אין זייערע שרשים)
and established like these rocks and hills".
וחוקים כצורים וגבעות הללו".
That is,
דאם הייסט,
that the Jews are the
אז די אידן זיינען די
(who are strong like)
(וועלכע זיינען חזקים ווי)
"rocks and hills",
"צורים וגבעות",
and the Patriarchs and Matriarchs are the "from the head
און די אבות ואמהות זיינען דער ״מראש
(rocks)
(צורים)
" — the "beginning" and "roots" of Jews
״ — די "ראשית" און "שרשים" פון אידן
(that make the Jews rocks,
(וואס מאכן די אידן צורים,
strong)
חזקים)
; and therefore Rashi is precise "through Patriarchs and Matriarchs" — not that rocks and hills are the Patriarchs and Matriarchs,
; און דערפאר איז רש״י מדייק ״על ידי אבות ואמהות״ — ניט אז צורים וגבעות זיינען די אבות ואמהות,
but that becoming a rock — the strength,
נאר אז ווערן א צור — דעם חוזק,
the Jews receive through
באקומען די אידן דורך
(their "head" and roots)
(זייער "ראש" ושרשים)
the Patriarchs and Matriarchs.
די אבות ואמהות.
It remains, however, not explained — the very reason is needed: since that in any case Rashi learns
עם בלייבט אבער ניט מוסבר — הא גופא טעמא בעי: וויבאלד אז סיי־ווי לערנט רש״י
(not literally,
(ניט כפשוטו,
but)
נאר)
that "from the head of rocks" denotes the strength in connection with the Patriarchs and Matriarchs — why does he deviate from the Midrash,
אז "מראש צורים" באצייכנט די שטארקייט אין פארבינדונג מיט די אבות ואמהות — פארוואם איז ער משנה פון מדרש,
and instead of learning that "rocks" means the Patriarchs
און אנשטאט צו לערנען אז "צורים" מיינט די אבות
Rock of their quarry etc. "Abraham your father"25],
צור חצבתם גו׳ אברהם אביכם" ],
he explains that rocks and hills refer to Jews,
איז ער מפרש אז צורים וגבעות באציט זיר צו אידן,
and the Patriarchs and Matriarchs are only "head of the rocks"?
און די אבות ואמהות זיינען בלויז "ראש צורים"?
4.
ד.
Then the explanation of this — simply: as an introduction to the words of Balaam the verse says26
איז דער ביאור בזה — בפשטות: אלם הקדמה צו דברי בלעם זאגט דער פסוק
: "And he took up his parable and said."
: "וישא משלו ויאמר".
The word "his parable" Rashi here27
דעם ווארט ״משלו״ איז רש״י דא
does not explain,
ניט מפרש,
from which it is understood,
וואם דערפון איז מובן,
that according to Rashi its meaning is — its simple literal sense,
אז לויט רש״י איז פירושו — פשוטו כמשמעו,
that Balaam spoke here with a parable,
אז בלעם האט דא גערעדט מיט א משל,
in its simple meaning — "a parable, to what is the matter similar."
במובנו הפשוט — "משל למה הדבר דומה".
(three times)
(דריי מאל)
speeches of Balaam,
רייד פון בלעם,
where it also says "and he took up his parable"28,
וואו עם שטייט אויר "וישא משלו" ,
he praised Jews using thereby parables — "like the horns of a wild ox"29,
האט ער משבח געווען אידן נוצנדיק דערביי משלים — "כתועפות ראם" ,
"like a lioness ... and like a lion"30,
"כלביא גו׳ וכארי" ,
"like streams ...
"כנחלים ..
like gardens etc.31,
כגנות גו ,
"a star treads"32].
"דרך כוכב" ].
Thus the question: which of his utterances were in the manner of a parable33?
ווערט די שאלה: וועלכע פון זיינע דיבורים זיינען געווען בדרך משל ?
The beginning of his words "From Aram led me Balak etc. Come etc. How shall I curse etc."34
התחלת דבריו "מן ארם ינחני בלק גו לכה גו׳ מה אקוב גו'"
is not a parable,
איז ניט קייז משל,
but these words are as they are and the subsequent words of blessing and praise — "Behold, a people that dwells alone and among the nations is not reckoned" — are also not a parable35.
נאר דאס זיינעו דברים כהווייתן און די ווייטערדיקע דברי ברכה ושבח — "הן עם לבדד ישכון ובגוים לא יתחשב״ — זיינען אויך ניט קיין משל .
At first glance one could say that "his parable" refers to the

"Who has counted the dust of Jacob",
"מי מנה עפר יעקב",
as commentators37
ווי מפרשים
explain,
טייטשן,
that this means that because of the immense multitude of Jews one cannot count them,
אז דאס מיינט אז צוליב דעם ריבוי עצום פון אידן קען מען זיי ניט ציילן,
as for example "dust",
אזוי ווי ע״ד משל "עפר",
which cannot be counted; and as it says in the verse earlier38
וועלכער קען ניט ווערן גע־ ציילט; און ווי עם שטייט אין פסוק פריער
"And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth, which if a man can count etc."
"ושמתי את זרעך כעפר הארץ אשר אם יוכל איש למנות גו'".
— But Rashi himself rejects this explanation:
— איז אבער רש״י אליין שולל דעם פירוש:
On "Who has counted the dust of Jacob" Rashi brings
אויף "מי מנה עפר יעקב" ברענגט רש״י
(in his first commentary)
(בפירושו הראשון)
"like its Targum: the subtle ones of the house of Jacob etc.",

מלשון
“fawns of the rams”43,

which means [choice].

all the more so according to the second interpretation in Rashi — “there is no account of the commandments that they fulfill with dust”,
עאכו״כ לויטן צװײטן פירוש אין רש״י — "אין חשבון במצות שהם מקיימין בעפר",
which according to this interpretation the meaning of “dust” is in its simple sense,
וואם לויט דעם פירוש איז דער טייטש פון "עפר" במובנו הפשוט,
actual dust
עפר ממש
(but [it] refers to the commandments that one fulfills with dust44).
(נאר געמיינט די מצות וואם מ׳איז מקיים בעפר ).
And likewise the words "and counting the fourth of Israel" are also not a metaphor — according to the first explanation in Rashi
ועד״ז זיינען אויר די ווערטער "ומספר את רובע ישראל" ניט קיין משל — לויטן ערשטן פירוש אין רש״י
(according to the Targum)
(ע״פ התרגום)
means "four
מיינט עם "ארבע
(banners)
(דגלים)
and according to the second explanation — "their fourths".
און לויטן צווייטן פירוש — "רביעותיהן".
The only words among Balaam's words,
די איינציקע ווערטער צווישן דברי בלעם,
which can be interpreted allegorically,
וועלכע קענען אויםגעטײטשט ווערן על דרך המשל,
are — "For from the top of rocks I see him, and from the hills I behold him"45,
זיינען — "כי מראש צורים אראנו ומגבעות אשורנו" ,
and for this reason Rashi does not want to accept to interpret them simply,
און מהאי טעמא וויל רש״י ניט אננעמען צו טייטשן זיי בפשטות,
but allegorically: "I look at their beginnings etc. and I see them established and strong in these rocks and hills etc."
נאר בדרך משל: "אני מסתכל בראשיתם כו׳ ואני רואה אותם מיוסדים וחזקים בצורים וגבעות הללו כו׳".
H.
ה.
Based on this — that Rashi's interpretation is founded on the necessity to explain "from the top of the rocks" as a metaphor — it will also become clear why Rashi cannot learn like the Midrash that "from the top of the rocks refers to the Patriarchs"
עפ״ז — אז רש״י׳ס פירוש איז מיוסד אויף דעם הכרח צו טייטשן ״מראש צורים״ אלס משל — וועט אויך רעכט ווערן פארוואס רש״י קען ניט לערנען ווי דער מדרש אז "מראש צורים אלו אבות"
(in the manner as in other
(ע״ד ווי אין אנדערע
verses where the Patriarchs are called "rock,"
פסוקים וואו די אבות ווערן אנגערופן ״צור״,
"mountains")
״הרים״)
Because since the word "Tzurim" is
ווארום וויבאלד אז דער ווארט "צורים" איז
(according to the Midrash)
(לפי המדרש)
a nickname
א כינוי
(in the Torah)
(אין תורה)
for the Patriarchs,
אויף די אבות,
then it is not a parable
איז עס דאך ניט קיין משל
(whose meaning is an example from another thing),
(וואם ענינו איז א דוגמא פון אן אנדער זאך),
but a name46
נאר א נאמען
with which the Patriarchs are called.
מיט וועלכן די אבות ווערן גערופן.
Therefore Rashi must learn that the words "Tzurim" and "Gevu'ot" Balaam said as a parable for the strength of Jews,
דעריבער מוז רש״י לערנען אז די ווערטער "צורים" און "גבעות" האט בלעם געזאגט אלם משל אויף דער שטארקייט פון אידן,
that they are "strong like these rocks and hills",
אז זיי זיינען "חזקים בצורים וגבעות הללו",
like physical rocks and hills47.
ווי גשמית׳דיקע צורים וגבעות .
6.
ו.
According to this, one can explain another perplexing Rashi commentary in our parshah — at the conclusion of Balaam's prophecy: on "First of nations is Amalek"48
לויט דעם קען מען מבאר זיין נאך א פירוש רש״י תמוה בפרשתנו — בסיום נבואת בלעם: אויף "ראשית גוים עמלק"
Rashi explains "He preceded all of them to wage war against Israel, and so Onkelos translated"49
איז רש״י מפרש "הוא קדם את כולם להלחם בישראל וכן תרגם אונקלוס
And his end is to be destroyed by them, as it is said50
ואחריתו להאבד בידם שנאמר
You shall blot out the memory of Amalek."
תמחה את זכר עמלק".
One must understand:
דארף מען פארשטיין:
a)
א)
What is the necessity according to the homiletic interpretation to explain "first of nations Amalek" — "he preceded all to fight against Israel",
וואם איז דער הכרח ע״ד הפשט צו טייטשן ״ראשית גוים עמלק״ — "קדם את כולם להלחם בישראל",
and not according to its simple meaning
און ניט כפשוטו
(according to the commentary of the Ramban)
(כפירוש הרמב״ן)
that Amalek is
אז עמלק איז
"First51
"בראש
of the nations he is considered because they were mighty and men of valor for war"
העמים יחשב כי גבורים היו ואנשי חיל למלחמה"
("first" from a praiseworthy term52,
("ראשית" פון לשון משובח ,
and as we find in Rashi above53
און ווי מען געפינט אין פרש״י לעיל
"first of the heavens — important")54?
״בשמים ראש — חשובים") ?
b)
ב)
Why does Rashi bring the proof on "and its end until destruction" from the later verse "you shall blot out the memory of Amalek" and not55
פארוואם ברענגט רש״י די ראי׳ אויף "ואחריתו עדי אובד" פון דעם שפעטערדיקן פסוק "תמחה את זכר עמלק" און ניט
from the earlier verse56
פון פריערדיקן פסוק
"I will surely blot out the memory of Amalek"?
"מחה אמחה את זכר עמלק"?
Simply, the reason is because Rashi wants to bring a proof that "and its end is to be destroyed by their hand"
בפשטות איז דער טעם ווייל רש׳י וויל ברענגען א ראי׳ אז "ואחריתו להאבד בידם"
(through Jews),
(דורך אידן),
and therefore he brings the proof from "you shall blot out the memory of Amalek"57.
און דער־ פאר ברענגט ער די ראי׳ פון "תמחה את זכר עמלק״ .
But this itself is not understandable: why does Rashi need to add the word,
אבער הא גופא איז ניט פארשטאנ־ דיק: פארוואם דארף רש״י צולייגן דעם ווארט,
"by their hand" and be compelled to bring the proof from the later verse "you shall blot out the memory of Amalek"?
בידם" און זיין מוכרח צו ברענגען די ראי׳ פון שפעטערדיקן פסוק ״תמחה גו״׳?
— In the verse it only says "and his end is destruction",
— אין פסוק שטייט דאך נאר "ואחריתו עדי אובד",
not mentioning by whom,
ניט דער־ מאנענדיק דורך וועמעז,
it could mean Hashem,
קען עם מיינען השם,
"I will surely blot out"58.
"מחה אמחה" .
The Maharal59
דער מהר״ל
explains that one cannot say that "end is destruction" means "by itself",
איז מבאר אז מען קען ניט זאגן אז "עדי אובד" מיינט "מעצמו",
because "if so, what is its relevance to the beginning of nations Amalek".
ווייל ״א״כ מה ענינו אל ראשית גוים עמלק".
Therefore Rashi says that this will be "in war with Israel".
דערפאר זאגט רש״י אז דאס וועט זיין "במלחמה עם ישראל".
But the answer is seemingly not sufficient: from where is the necessity,
אבער דער תירוץ איז לכאורה ניט מספיק: דמנ״ל ההכרח,
that just as "the first of nations" is related to
אז כשם ווי "ראשית גוים" איז בשייכות צו
(the war with)
(דער מלחמה מיט)
Jews,
אידן,
therefore must "and his end until destruction" also be interpreted thus — through the Jews58?
דערפאר מוז "ואחריתו עדי אובד" אויך געטייטשט ווערן אזוי — דורך די אידן ?
One can simply explain,
מען קען דאך מפרש זיין פשוט,
that since Amalek was the first to make war with Jews,
אז היות עמלק איז גע־ ווען דער ערשטער צו מלחמה האבן מיט אידן,
his punishment will be "and his end until destruction" — that he will
וועט זיין עונש זיין "ואחריתו עדי אובד״ — אז ער וועט
(completely)
(אינגאנצן)
be destroyed
נאבד ווערן
(as it says further60
(ע״ד ווי עס שטייט ווייטער
in relation to another nation "and also he until destruction").
בשייכות צו אן אנדער אומה "וגם הוא עדי אובד").

And one may say the explanation in this — in the manner of the above:
ויש לומר הביאור בזה — ע״ד הנ״ל:
The verse introduces — "And he saw Amalek and he raised his parable and he said: First of nations etc."
דער פסוק איז מקדים — "וירא את עמלק וישא משלו ויאמר ראשית גו׳".
Is difficult for Rashi: apparently there is no parable in this verse — the words "First of nations Amalek" are simple and clear,
איז ביי רש״י׳ן קשה: לכאורה איז אין דעם פסוק ניטא קיין משל — די ווער־ טער "ראשית גוים עמלק" זיינען פשוט און קלאר,
that Amalek is the "first",
אז עמלק איז דער "ראשית",
the first praiseworthy
דער ערשטער משובח
(in strength)
(אין שטארקייט)
of all nations; "and his end" — and his end will be "until destruction"!
פון אלע גוים; ״ואחריתו״ — און זיין סוף וועט זיין "עדי אובד"!
Therefore Rashi explains "First of nations Amalek" — "He preceded them all to fight against Israel",
דערפאר איז רש״י מפרש "ראשית גוים עמלק״ — "הוא קדם את כולם להלחם בישראל",
that "First of nations" means here not in its simple sense,
אז "ראשית גוים" מיינט דא ניט במובנו הפשוט,
but this is a description that brings out by way of parable another thing in Amalek,
נאר דאם איז א תואר וואם ברענגט ארוים בדרך משל אן אנדער זאך בעמלק,
which does not lie in the plain meaning of the words —
וועלכער ליגט ניט אין פשטות פון די ווערטער —
"First of nations" alludes to that which "he preceded them all to fight against Israel" — and therefore the phrase "he took up his parable and said"61 fits it.
״ראשית גױם״ איז מרמז דאס װאם ״הוא קדם את כולם להלחם כישראל" — און דערפאר פאסט דערויף דער לשון ״וישא משלי ויאמר" .
And with this is also understood the continuation in Rashi — "and his end to be destroyed by them": because "first of nations is Amalek" is a parable that points to a special matter,
אוו דערמיט איז אויך מובן דער המשך אין רש״י — "ואחריתו להאבד בידם": וויבאלד אז "ראשית גוים עמלק" איז א משל וואט ווייזט אויף אן ענין מיוחד,
namely in connection to the Jews as above,
והיינו בשייכות צו די אידן כנ״ל,
it is logical,
איז מסתבר,
that also the continuation "and his end" its meaning is
אז אויך דער המשך "ואחריתו" איז מובנו
(not
(ניט
(only)
(נאר)
literally: "his end",
כפשוטו: "זיין סוף",
but)
נאר)
a parable to indicate a new matter.
א משל צו אנדייטן אויף אן ענין חדש.
And since the meaning of "beginning ..
און וויבאלד אז דער מובן פון "ראשית ..
and its end" is a parable,
ואחריתו" איז א משל,
it follows to say,
לייגט זיך צו זאגן,
that both of them are a parable in relation to the same matter,
אז ביידע זיינעו א משל בשייכות צו דעם זעלבן ענין,
the "beginning" and "end" of one matter62,
ס׳איז דער "ראשית" און "אחרית" פון איין עניו ,
the war of Amalek and Israel.
מלחמת עמלק וישראל.
— Therefore Rashi specifies "and its end to be destroyed by them": "and its end" is like a concluding matter of "beginning",
— דערפאר איז רש״י מדייק "ואחריתו להאבד כידס": "ואחריתו" איז ווי אן אויספיר־ענין פון "ראשית",
that Amalek was the "beginning" in war,
אז עמלק איז געווען דער "ראשית" במלחמה,
to attack the Jewish people,
צו אנפאלז אריחי די אידן,
its "end" will be — "to be destroyed by them" in war.
וועט זיין "אחרית" זיין — ״להאבד בידם״ במלחמה.

ח.
from the above explanation — that according to Y.-Sh.-Y. "from the top of the rocks" is a mashal — comes a tasty point in "the wine of Torah" in Rashi's commentary:
פון דעם ביאור הנ״ל — אז לויט י־ש״י איז ״מראש צורים״ א משל — קומט צו א געשמאקער ענין אין "יינה של תורה" שבפירוש רש״י:
The necessity of a mashal is specifically when one speaks about a matter
די נויטיקייט פון א משל איז דוקא ווען מען רעדט וועגן אן ענין
(that is)
(הכי)
deep63,
עמוק ,
that the matter as it is in itself cannot be depicted and explained.
וואם דעם ענין כמו שהוא לעצמו קען מען ניט מצייר ומסביר זיין.
Therefore one gives a mashal for it — one finds another matter in which one can have comprehension and depiction,
דערפאר גיט מען דערויף א משל — מ׳געפינט א צווייטן ענין אין וועלכן מ׳קען האבן א השגה וציור,
whose content is like and similar to the nimshal,
וואס זיין תוכן איז כעין ומעין הנמשל,
and through this one gets a
און דורכ־ דעם באקומט מען א

understanding of the nimshal.
הבנה אין דעם נמשל.
And likewise in our matter: That which Balaam said that Jews are "strong as these rocks and hills" is only a parable — because the true strength and might of Jews
ועד״ז בעניננו: דאס וואס בלעם האט געזאגט אז אידן זיינען "חזקים כצורים וגבעות הללו״ איז בלויז א משל — ווייל דער אמת׳ער חוזק ותוקף פון אידן
(which they receive "through the Patriarchs and Matriarchs")
(וועלכן זיי באקומען "על ידי אבות ואמהות")
is entirely not comparable to the strength of "rocks and hills",
איז גאר ניט בערך דעם חוזק פון "צורים וגבעות",
it is a strength of which Balak can have no conception — only so that he should have some comprehension and grasp of it,
ס׳איז א חוזק אין וועלכו בלק קען קייו ציור ניט האבן — נאר כדי ער זאל האבן א קצת השגה ותפיסא אין דעם,
they gave him a parable of "these rocks and hills".
האט מען אים גע־ געבן א משל פון "צורים וגבעות הללו".

The explanation in this:
די הסברה אין דעם:
The true strength of a Jew is — not "the hands
די אמת׳ע שטארקייט פון אן אידן זיינען — ניט "הידים
(the hands of Esav)
(ידי עשיו)
physical power and the might of his hand,
כח הגוף ועוצם ידו,
but rather his spirituality,
נאר זיינע רוחניות,
the powers of the soul,
כחות הנשמה,
and especially his power of self-sacrifice,
ובעיקר כח המסירת נפש שלו,
which overcomes all his powers
וועלכער איבערוועלטיקט אלע זיינע כוחות
(also the physical ones,
(אויך די גשמיות׳דיקע,
"the hands")
״הידים״)
— he is after all willing to give up everything,
— ער איז דאך מוסר דאם אלעס,
And in the levels of the soul,
ובמדריגות הנשמה,
this is,
איז דאס,
as the Tzemach Tzedek64
ווי דער צ״צ
explains it: "Rosh Tzurim" alludes to the level in the soul from which every Jew has the readiness "to give his life for the sanctification of G-d's name without any
איז דאס מבאר: "ראש צורים" איז מרמז אויף דער מדריגה אין נשמה פון וועלכער יעדער איד האט די גרייטקייט "למסור נפשו על קידוש השם בלי שום
Reason and knowledge ..
טעם ודעת ..
And therefore it is called "head of rocks," which is the aspect of very great strength,
ולכן נקרא ראש צורים שהוא בחי׳ חזקה מאד",
The strength of a Jew is his faith in G‑d,
דער תוקף פון א אידן איז זיין אמונה בה׳,
For which a Jew is prepared to go to self-sacrifice65
אויף וועלכער א איד איז מוכן צו גיין אויף מסירת נפש
for the sanctification of G‑d's name, "not to deny the one G‑d"66,
על קידוש ה׳ "שלא לכפור בה׳ אחד" ,
And in a manner "as if it is something that it is altogether impossible to deny the one G‑d"66.
און אין אן אופן "כאלו הוא דבר שאי אפשר כלל לכפור בה׳ אחד" .
And this is what Rashi says: "I look at their beginning etc. I see them established and strong ..
און דאס איז וואס רש״י זאגט "אני מסתכל בראשיתם כו׳ רואה אותם מיוסדים וחזקים ..
through the Patriarchs and Matriarchs" — because the "strength" of self-sacrifice for the sanctification of G‑d's name was inherited from the Patriarchs67
על ידי אבות ואמהות" — ווייל דער "חוזק" פון מסירת נפש על קידוש ה׳ האט מען בירושה פון די אבות
(and Matriarchs),
(ואמהות),
What the power of self-sacrifice is is precisely the opposite of the concept of "power" in relation to worldly matters: the definition of the world is — existence and reality,
וואס אט דער תוקף פון מסירת נפש איז פונקט דער היפך פין דעם מושג פון "תוקף" בשייכות צו עניני העולם: דער גדר פון וועלט איז — פאראנענקייט ומציאות,
and a strong thing in the world means,
און א שטארקע זאך אין וועלט מיינט,
that the reality of the thing is powerful: but self-sacrifice, its essence is,
אז די מציאות פון דער זאך איז בתוקף: אבער מסירת נפש איז ענינה,
on the contrary,
פארקערט,
one is completely self-nullifying,
מען איז זיך לגמרי מבטל,
one gives oneself entirely away to the Above.
מען גיט זיך אינגאנצן אוועק צום אויבערשטן.
And therefore the Alter Rebbe explains66
און דערפאר איז דער אלטער רבי מבאר
that the power for self-sacrifice comes from the aspect that "Hashem is One" shines in every Jew
אז דער כח אויף מסירת נפש קומט מצד דעם וואם "ה׳ אחד" איז מאיר ביי יעדער אידן
(in the soul,
(אין נשמה,
which
וואם
is a "part of G-d from above literally"68),
איז א "חלק אלקה ממעל ממש" ),
and from this is in Jews the matter of faith and self-sacrifice.
וואס דערפון איז אין אידן ענין האמונה ומסירת נפש.
Because self-sacrifice is opposite of the nature of the created being — a created being does not do a thing through which he
ווייל מסירת נפש איז היפך פון דעם טבע הנברא — א נברא טוט ניט א זאך דורך וועלכער ער
(his existence)
(זיין מציאות)
is nullified — only this is a G‑dly power and strength.
ווערט אוים — נאר דאם איז א ג־טלעכער כח און שטארקייט.
And this is the continuation in the verse: "For from the top of the rocks I see him, etc. Behold, a people that dwells alone and among the nations is not reckoned" — the strength of the Jew
און דאם איז דער המשך אין פסוק: "כי מראש צורים אראנו גו׳ הן עם לבדד ישכון וכגויס לא יתחשב״ — דער חוזק פון אידו
("rocks")
("צורים")
is in a manner that makes them completely "alone",
איז אין אן אופן וואם מאכט זיי אינגאנצן "לבדד",
(higher,
(העכער,
until — completely),
ביז — לגמרי),
not in the category of all nations,
ניט אין דעם גדר פון אלע פעלקער,
"and among the nations is not reckoned"69.
"ובגוים לא יתחשב" .
Yud-Yud-Daled.
יי״ד.
And this is the explanation in the words of Rashi "I look at their beginning etc. and I see them
איו דאס איז די הסברה אין דברי רש״י "אני מסתכל בראשיתם כו׳ ואני רואה אותם
(Jews)
(אידן)
established and strong ..
מיוסדים וחזקים ..
through the Patriarchs and Matriarchs" — so the strength of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs is transmitted to Jews
על ידי אבות ואמהות״ — אז דער תוקף פון די אבות ואמהות ווערט איבערגעגעבן צו אידן
(until the end of all generations),
(עד סוף כל הדורות),
without changes:
אן שינויים:
If it were speaking about a strength that is a created thing,
ווען עס וואלט זיך גערעדט וועגן א שטארקייט אלם נברא,
it is not possible that the strength be transmitted from generation to generation in the same manner: by nature a thing becomes weaker and weaker over the course of time.
איז ניט שייר או דער חוזק זאל איבערגעגעבן ווערן מדור דור אין דעם זעלבן אופן: ע״פ טבע ווערט א זאך בהמשך הזמן שווא־ כער און שוואכער.
But since the strength of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs derives from the fact that
וויבאלד אבער אז דער חוזק פון די אבות ואמהות נעמט זיך דערפון וואס
in them was illuminated "Hashem is One" — and this is transmitted as an inheritance "to their children after them forever"70
אין זײ האט מאיר געװען ״ה׳ אחד״ — און דאס גיט זיך איבער בירושה "לבניהם אחריהם עד עולם״
— is in
— איז אין
There are no changes to this,
דעם ניטא קײנע שינויים,
it is transmitted with the same force to every Jew until the end of all generations,
דאם גיט זיך איבער מיט דעם זעלבן תוקף צו יעדער איד עד םוף כל הדורות,
in a manner of "I have not changed."
אין אן אופן פון ״לא שניתי".
