From the verse1
פון פסוק
"And God saw the light that it was good, and God separated between the light and between the darkness" — Rashi cites the words "And God saw the light that it was good, and He separated" and explains: "Even regarding this we need the words of Aggadah2,
"וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל אלקים בין האור ובין החושך" איז רש"י מעתיק די ווערטער "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל" און איז מפרש: "אף בזה אנו צריכים לדברי אגדה ,
He saw it3
ראהו
that it is not fitting4
שאינו כדאי
for the wicked to use it, and He separated it5
להשתמש בו רשעים והבדילו
for the righteous in the future to come6,
לצדיקים לעתיד לבא ,
And according to its plain meaning, explain it thus: He saw it that it was good, and it is not proper for it and for darkness that they should be used7
ולפי פשוטו כך פרשהו ראהו כי טוב ואין נאה לו ולחושך שיהיו משתמשין
in mixture, and He set for this its boundary by day and for this its boundary by night."
בערבובי׳ וקבע לזה תחומו ביום ולזה תחומו בלילה".
The commentators learn8,
לערנען מפרשים ,
that that which Rashi needs
אז דאס וואס רש"י דארף
("Even regarding this")
("אף בזה")
to come to words of Aggadah,
אנקומען צו דברי אגדה,
is because "and He separated" here cannot be explained according to its plain meaning
איז ווייל דעם "ויבדל" דא קען מען ניט מפרש זיין כמשמעו
(separation <b>between</b> light and darkness),
(הבדלה צווישן אור וחושך),
since "separation" applies only to things that intermingle,
היות אז "הבדלה" איז שייך נאר בא דברים המתערבים,
but not by light and darkness which cannot mix together,
אבער ניט ביי אור וחושך וועלכע קענען זיך ניט צונויפמישן,
for at the time that light shines, darkness cannot then be there9
ווארום בשעת עס איז מאיר אור קען דארט ניט זיין דעמאלט חושך
Therefore Rashi must come to aggadic words: "He saw that it was not fitting to use it etc. and He separated it for the righteous,"
דעריבער דארף רש"י אנקומען צו דברי אגדה: "ראהו שאינו כדאי להשתמש בו כו' והבדילו לצדיקים",
and according to this the explanation of "and He separated" is not in its plain sense — a separation between light and darkness — but that which He separated the light for the righteous for the future to come10.
וואס לפ"ז איז דער פירוש פון ויבדל ניט כמשמעו — א הבדלה צווישן אור וחושך — נאר דאס וואס ער האט מבדיל געווען דעם אור לצדיקים לעתיד לבא .
And in continuation of this Rashi says further "according to its plain meaning — that the separation should be in its plain sense11
און בהמשך לזה זאגט רש"י ווייטער "לפי פשוטו — שיהי׳ ההבדל כמשמעו
— so explain it,
— כך פרשהו,
He saw it that it was good and it is not fitting for it and for darkness that they should be used<b> in mixture</b>,"
ראהו כי טוב ואין נאה לו ולחושך שיהיו משתמשין בערבובי ׳",
meaning a mixture
מיינענדיק אן ערבובי׳
(not in place,
(ניט אין מקום,
together in one place,
צוזאמען אין איין ארט,
but)
נאר)
in time — that there was no fixed time when there should be light and when darkness,
אין זמן — אז ס׳איז ניט געווען קיין זמן קבוע ווען עס זאל זיין אור און ווען חושך,
but it was sometimes light and sometimes dark.
נאר ס׳איז געווען לפעמים ליכטיק ולפעמים פינסטער.
And the separation consisted in that which "He fixed for this its boundary by day and for this its boundary by night".
און די הבדלה איז באשטאנען אין דעם וואס "קבע לזה תחומו ביום ולזה תחומו בלילה".

ב.
According to this, however, it is not understood:
לפ"ז איז אבער ניט פארשטאנדיק:
Even though Rashi has not yet said <b>explicitly</b> that "I have come <b>only</b> for its plain meaning"
אע"פ אז רש"י האט נאך ניט געזאגט במפורש אז "אני לא באתי אלא לפשוטו"
(He says this only after several verses12),
(דאס זאגט ער ערשט מיט כמה פסוקים נאכדעם ),
however, the simple interpretation of peshat,
איז אבער דער איינפאכער אפטייטש פון פשט,
aggadah,
אגדה,
derash — says that to everything first comes the open meaning,
דרש — זאגט אז צו אלעם ערשטען קומט דער אפענער מיין,
and only afterwards
און ערשט דערנאר
(and especially — if it is not smooth)
(ובפרט — אויב עס איז ניט גלאטיק)
has a place "and go <b>to expound</b>"13
האט אן ארט אויף ותלך לדרוש
to seek what is not openly [visible]
זוכן וואס איז דא ניט אפענערהייט
(derash,
(דרש,
aggadah,
אגדה,
a reason,
א טעם א.
etc.,
ז.
etc.).
וו.).
And as it is also itself proven from Rashi's language "even in this14
און ווי ס׳איז אויך דא גופא מוכח פון לשון רש"י "אף בזה
<b>we need</b> the words of aggadah",
אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה",
that first and foremost is the plain meaning of Scripture,
אז לכל לראש איז פשוטו של מקרא,
only here one must come to the words of aggadah
נאר דא מוז מען אנקומען צו דברי אגדה
(as Rashi explains in the above-mentioned verse15
(ווי רש"י פירט אויס אין דעם אויבנדערמאנטן פסוק
"and to the aggadah <b>that settles</b> the words of Scripture" — in <b>that</b> Scripture there lacks settlement).
"ולאגדה המיישבת דברי המקרא" — אין דעם מקרא פעלט יישוב).
So since according to the aforementioned explanation Rashi has an explanation "according to its simple meaning" according to which the "ויבדל" is "in its literal sense" — why does Rashi need to come at all to the explanation of "words of Aggadah",
איז וויבאלד אז לפי פירוש הנ"ל האט רש"י א פירוש "לפי פשוטו" לויט וועלכן דער "ויבדל" איז "כמשמעו" — פארוואס דארף רש"י איבערהויפט אנקומען צום פירוש פון "דברי אגדה",
that according to this explanation the "ויבדל" is <b>not</b> "in its literal sense"
וואס לפי פירוש זה איז דער "ויבדל" ניט "לפי משמעו"
(a separation between two things16),
(א הבדלה צווישן צוויי זאכן ),
but rather "He separated it for the righteous"?
נאר "הבדילו לצדיקים"?
Even assuming that the explanation "according to its simple meaning" is not so smooth,
אפילו אננעמענדיק אז דער פירוש "לפי פשוטו" איז ניט אזוי גלאטיק,
because according to this the separation is not between the light and darkness themselves17,
ווייל לפ"ז איז די הבדלה ניט צווישן דעם אור וחושך עצמם ,
but rather a separation in the determination of their <b>time</b> — and therefore "we need
נאר א הבדלה אין קביעות זמנם — און דערפאר "אנו צריכים
the words of Aggadah" — but the explanation according to its simple meaning is closer to the <b>implication</b> of the word "ויבדל"18
לדברי אגדה" — איז אבער דער פירוש לפי פשוטו נעענטער צו דער משמעות פון ווארט "ויבדל"
and to the content of the subsequent words of the verse
און צום תוכן פון די ווייטערדיקע ווערטער פון פסוק
("ויבדל etc. between the light and between the darkness")
("ויבדל גו׳ בין האור ובין החושך")
than the explanation of words of Aggadah in "ויבדל" — and according to this Rashi should have at least preceded the explanation "according to its simple meaning" before the explanation of "words of Aggadah".
ווי דער פירוש פון דברי אגדה אין "ויבדל" — ולפ"ז האט רש"י עכ"פ געדארפט מקדים זיין דעם פי׳ "לפי פשוטו" פאר דעם פי׳ פון "דברי אגדה".
Also one must understand: since the difficulty in the verse that Rashi comes to answer
אויך דארף מען פארשטיין: וויבאלד אז די שוועריקייט אין פסוק וואס רש"י קומט פארענטפערן
(because of which "we need the words of Aggadah")
(וואס צוליב דעם "אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה")
is — as is appropriate to say separation between light and darkness
איז — ווי פאסט צו זאגן הבדלה צווישן אור און חושך
(since they do not intermingle),
(וויבאלד זיי זיינען זיך ניט מתערב),
Rashi should have nevertheless copied
האט דאך רש"י געדארפט מעתיק זיין
(<b>also</b>)
(אויך)
(also)
(אויך)
the continuation of the verse "
דעם המשך הכתוב "
(and He separated)
(ויבדל)
God between the light and between the darkness",
אלקים בין האור ובין החושך",
or at least allude to the words with "etc."?
אדער עכ"פ מרמז זיין די ווערטער מיט "וגומר"?
3.
ג.
From this it is understood that the question and the necessity for his interpretation is specifically from the words "And God saw the light that it was good, and He separated" —
פון דעם איז פארשטאנדיק אז די שאלה און דער הכרח אויף זיין פירוש איז דווקא פון די ווערטער "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל" —
What here is not understood19
וואס דא איז ניט מובן
— how is "And God saw the light, that it was good" a cause and reason for "and He separated"?
— ווי אזוי איז "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב" א סיבה וטעם צום "ויבדל"?
Therefore Rashi says "even regarding this we need the words of Aggadah <b>He saw it</b>
דעריבער זאגט רש"י "אף בזה אנו צריכים לדברי אגדה ראהו
(that it was good — and consequently)
(כי טוב — ובמילא)
that it is not fitting for the wicked to use it <b>and He separated it</b>".
שאינו כדאי להשתמש בו רשעים והבדילו ".
Based on this, one could also explain why Rashi precedes the interpretation of Aggadic words before the interpretation "according to its simple meaning",
עפ"ז וואלט מען געקענט אויך מסביר זיין וואס רש"י איז מקדים דעם פירוש פון דברי אגדה פאר דעם פירוש "לפי פשוטו",
And with the introduction of the precise wording of Rashi in this interpretation "according to its simple meaning" — "He saw it that it was good and it is not <b>seemly</b> for it and for the darkness that they should function in mixture."
ובהקדים דיוק לשון רש"י אין דעם פי׳ "לפי פשוטו" — "ראהו כי טוב ואין נאה לו ולחושך שיהיו משתמשין בערבובי׳".
For at first glance it would be more fitting that Rashi should say in the language of the verse "He saw it etc. and it is not <b>good</b>20
דלכאורה וואלט מער גע־ פאסט אז רש"י זאל זאגן כלשון הכתוב "ראהו כו׳ ואין טוב
for it and for the darkness that they should function in mixture" —
לו ולחושך שיהיו משתמשין בערבובי׳" —
But according to its "simple meaning" "it is not <b>good</b> for it and for the darkness" is <b>not</b> correct
נאר לויט "פשוטו" איז "אין טוב לו ולחושך" ניט ריכטיג
(it cannot be a reason for "and He separated")
(קען עס ניט זיין א סיבה צו "ויבדל")
— because since there was among them no mixture <b>in actuality</b>,
— ווארום וויבאלד אז עס איז ביי זיי ניט געווען קיין עירבוב בפועל ,
each one functioned in a separate time
יעדער איינער האט משמש געווען אין א באזונדער זמן
(there was only not a fixed order in their times),
(ס׳איז נאר ניט געווען א סדר קבוע בזמנם),
one cannot say that it is "not good for it",
קען מען ניט זאגן אז ס׳איז "אין טוב לו",
because it did not harm the light at all
ווייל עס האט גארניט געשאט דעם אור
(or the darkness),
(אדער דעם חושך),
but it is merely "not <b>seemly</b> for it": because "And God saw the light that it was good",
נאר ס׳איז בלויז "אין נאה לו": וויבאלד אז "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב",
it is not "becoming" that such an important thing as "light" should be "in mixture" with darkness and not have a fixed time for itself.
איז ניט "שיין" אז אזא חשוב׳ע זאך ווי "אור" זאל זיין "בערבובי׳" מיט חושך און ניט האבן א קבוע׳דיקן זמן פאר זיך.
Based on this it comes out,
עפ"ז קומט אויס,
at first glance,
לכאורה,
that according to "words of Aggadah" "And God saw ..
אז לויט "דברי אגדה" איז "וירא אלקים ..
that it was good" is a more vague reason for "And He separated"
כי טוב" א מער וואגיקע סיבה צום "ויבדל"
(since that "that it was good" — "it is not <b>worthwhile</b> for the wicked to use it"21)
(וויבאלד אז "כי טוב" — "אינו כדאי להשתמש בו רשעים" )
than "according to its simple meaning",
ווי "לפי פשוטו",
that according to this from "that it was good" is only "it is not <b>fitting</b> for him" and therefore "And He separated".
וואס לויט דעם איז מצד "כי טוב" נאר "אין נאה לו" און דערפאר "ויבדל".
But also this explanation cannot be accepted in Rashi's commentary as a reason to bring — and even more so,
אבער אויך דעם פירוש קען מען ניט אננעמען אין פירוש רש"י אלס טעם צו ברענגען — און נאך מער,
to precede — the words of Aggadah — because <b>the</b> reason for "And He separated" is not at all hinted even in the verse,
צו מקדים זיין — די דברי אגדה — ווייל די סיבה צו "ויבדל" איז כלל ניט מרומז אפילו אין פסוק,
it is only a matter of "Aggadah".
ס׳איז נאר אן ענין פון "אגדה".
And especially the explanation according to the continuation of the verse "And God separated between the light and between the darkness" is not smooth.
ובפרט איז ניט גלאטיק דער פירוש לויט דעם המשך הכתוב "ויבדל אלקים בין האור ובין החושך".
4.
ד.
And one can explain this by prefacing what Rashi <b>repeats</b> in <b>his commentary</b> "according to its simple meaning" — "He saw it <b>that it was good</b>",
וי"ל הביאור בזה בהקדים וואס רש"י חזר׳ט איבער בפירושו "לפי פשוטו" — "ראהו כי טוב ",
after he quotes in that entry <b>the</b> words "And God saw the light <b>that it was good</b>"; in the usual manner he should have begun "He saw it that it was not fitting for him",
נאכדעם ווי ער איז מעתיק אין דעם ד"ה די ווערטער "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב "; ע"ד הרגיל האט ער געדארפט אנפאנגען "ראהו שאין נאה לו",
exactly as in the commentary on words of Aggadah,
פונקט ווי אין פירוש פון דברי אגדה,
where he says
וואו ער זאגט
(not "He saw it that it was good and it is not fitting to use it etc.",
(ניט "ראהו כי טוב ואינו כדאי להשתמש בו כו'",
but)
נאר)
"He saw it that it is not fitting to use it etc.".
"ראהו שאינו כדאי להשתמש בו כו'".
And the explanation of this,
והביאור בזה,
that this is indeed one of the differences between the first commentary in Rashi and the second commentary:
אז דאס איז טאקע איינער פון די חילוקים צווישן דעם ערשטן פירוש אין רש"י און דעם צווייטן פירוש:
Since it says "And God saw the light that it was good, and He separated",
וויבאלד עס שטייט "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל",
not "And God saw that it was good, and He separated",
ניט "וירא אלקים כי טוב ויבדל",
it is understood,
איז מובן,
that the "and He separated" is connected with the "And God saw <b>the light</b> that it was good" — and Rashi makes this clear with that which he brings in the beginning of the passage only "And God saw the light that it was good, and He separated"
אז דער "ויבדל" איז פארבונדן מיט דעם "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב" — און דאס מאכט רש"י קלאר מיט דעם וואס ער ברענגט אין דיבור־המתחיל נאר "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל"
(not the subsequent words,
(ניט די ווייטערדיקע ווערטער,
and he does not even hint at them with "etc."22),
און איז זיי אפילו ניט מרמז מיט "וגו׳" ),
that the "and He separated"
אז דער "ויבדל"
(according to this interpretation)
(לפירוש זה)
does not refer
באציט זיך ניט
(only)
(נאר)
to later but only to earlier,
אויף ווייטער נאר אויף פריער,
namely,
דהיינו,
the separation was in the light itself:
די הבדלה איז געווען אין דעם אור גופא:
Since "And God saw the light that it was good" He saw
וויבאלד "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב" וירא
(an additional thing)
(א דבר נוסף)
that there is in it <b>also</b> the matter of "good" — [therefore] "and He separated",
אז ס׳איז דא אין אים אויך דער ענין פון "טוב" — איז "ויבדל",
He separated23
ער האט אפגעטיילט
the "good" from the "light",
דעם "טוב" פון דעם "אור",
and there remained revealed only the luminosity of light,
און ס׳איז געבליבן בגלוי בלויז די ליכטיקייט פון אור,
but not the "good"24.
אבער ניט דער "טוב" .
And to explain the reason why it was necessary to separate the "good" that is in the light,
און צו מסביר זיין דעם טעם פארוואס מ׳האט געדארפט מבדיל זיין דעם "טוב" שבאור,
Rashi brings the interpretation of "words of Aggadah",
ברענגט רש"י דעם פירוש פון "דברי אגדה",
"He saw that it was not fitting for the wicked to use it".
"ראהו שאינו כדאי להשתמש בו רשעים".
Based on this, it is understood:
עפ"ז איז מובן:
(a)
(א)
Why a child of five years for Mikra does not immediately become a question: What does "He separated it for the righteous"25 mean,
וואס בא א בן חמש למקרא ווערט ניט גלייך קיין שאלה: וואס מיינט "הבדילו לצדיקים" ,
when one sees the "light" now?
בעת אז מ׳זעט דעם "אור" איצט?
(Because,
(ווייל,
as above,
כנ"ל,
only the "good" within the light He separated).
נאר דער "טוב" שבאור הבדילו).
(b)
(ב)
Why Rashi brings that "He separated it for the righteous <b>for the future to come</b>" and is not satisfied with saying merely "He separated it for the righteous"24
וואס רש"י ברענגט אז "הבדילו לצדיקים לעתיד לבוא " און איז זיך ניט מסתפק מיט זאגן בלויז "הבדילו לצדיקים"
— because with this Rashi indicates that the "good" within the light is not a matter that is relevant to know now,
— ווייל דערמיט דייטעט אן רש"י אז דער "טוב" שבאור איז ניט קיין ענין וואס איז שייך צו וויסן איצט,
for27
ווארום
also for the righteous it will only be in the future to come.
אויך בא צדיקים וועט דאס ערשט זיין לעתיד לבא.
5.
ה.
Based on this, it is understood why Rashi precedes "Even in this we need the words of Aggadah" before the explanation "according to its simple meaning",
לפ"ז איז מובן וואס רש"י איז מקדים "אף בזה אנו צריכים לדברי אגדה" פאר דעם פירוש "לפי פשוטו",
because specifically according to the explanation of "words of Aggadah" the word "and He separated" is more precise:
ווייל דוקא לויטן פירוש פון "דברי אגדה" איז מדויק יותר דער ווארט "ויבדל":
Since between light and darkness one cannot translate "ויבדל" literally as one separates two things that are joined together,
וויבאלד אז צווישן אור וחושך קען מעז ניט טייטשן "ויבדל" כפשוטו ווי מען טיילט פאנאנדער צוויי זאכן וואס זיינען מחובר יחדיו,
therefore in order to explain the interpretation of "ויבדל" and the continuation of the verse "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל" — "we need the words of Aggadah"28.
איז בכדי צו מסביר זיין דעם פירוש פון "ויבדל" און דעם המשך הכתוב "וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ויבדל" — "אנו צריכים לדברי אגדה" .
What with the words of aggadah is answered the plain meaning of the verse,
וואס מיט די דברי אגדה ווערט פארענטפערט דער פשט הכתוב,
that the explanation of "vayavdel" is according to its simple meaning29
אז דער פירוש פון "ויבדל" איז כפשוטו
: a separation in the thing itself — between the good of light and the light of light
: א הבדלה אין דער זאך גופא — צווישן דעם טוב שבאור און דעם אור שבאור
(in the manner of "let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters and let it divide between water and water"30).
(ע"ד ווי "יהי רקיע בתוך המים ויהי מבדיל בין מים למים" ).
And therefore the explanation according to its simple meaning comes as second in Rashi,
און דערפאר קומט דער פירוש לפי פשוטו אלס צווייטער אין רש"י,
because although this is "according to its simple meaning" of the content of the verse29,
ווייל כאטש דאס איז "לפי פשוטו" פון דעם תוכן הפסוק ,
the division "between the light and between the darkness",
די הבדלה "בין האור ובין החושך",
this is however "further" from the simple explanation of the word "vayavdel" as
איז דאס אבער "ווייטער" פון פירוש הפשוט של תיבת "ויבדל" ווי
according to the explanation of "words of aggadah",
לויטן פירוש פון "דברי אגדה",
because "according to its simple meaning" there was not opened here any division between two connected things
ווארום "לפי פשוטו" איז דא ניט אויפגעטאן געווארן קיין הבדלה צווישן צוויי זאכן מחוברים
(not in place,
(ניט במקום,
not in time),
ניט בזמן),
but a setting of a boundary for each one.
נאר א קביעת תחום פאר יעדן איינעם.
And from this reason Rashi needs to add in his commentary "according to its simple meaning" — "He saw it <b>that it was good</b>" — although he bases himself on the language of the verse,
און מהאי טעמא דארף רש"י מוסיף זיין אין דעם פירוש "לפי פשוטו" — "ראהו כי טוב " — כאטש ער שטעלט זיך אויף לשון הפסוק,
"And God saw the light <b>that it was good</b>",
"וירא אלקים את האור כי טוב ",
And as above,
וכנ"ל,
To emphasize that "according to its simple meaning" the explanation of "that it was good" is according to its simple meaning,
אויף מדגיש זיין אז "לפי פשוטו" איז דער פירוש "כי טוב" כפשוטו,
That the "good" is not <b>another</b> matter in the light,
אז דער "טוב" איז ניט נאך אן ענין אין אור,
As according to the first explanation,
ווי לויטן ערשטן פירוש,
But <b>He saw it</b> — the light <b>itself</b> — <b>that it was good</b>.
נאר ראהו — דעם אור גופא — כי טוב .
6.
ו.
Based on the above one can also explain the understanding of the Torah in Rashi's language "<b>even in this</b> we need the words of Aggadah",
ע"פ הנ"ל קען מען אויך מבאר זיין ביינה של תורה שבפרש"י לשון רש"י " אף בזה אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה",
Which according to its simple meaning comes in continuation to Rashi's words earlier on "Bereishis"31
וואס כפשוטו קומט עס בהמשך צו דברי רש"י פריער אויף "בראשית"
— "This verse says nothing but 'expound Me'."
— "אין המקרא הזה אומר אלא דרשוני".
At first glance it is not smooth — what is the practical difference that this that "we need words of aggadah" is it not the first time?
דלכאורה איז ניט גלאטיק — למאי נפק"מ אז דאס וואס "אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה" איז עס ניט דעם ערשטן מאל?
Even if earlier Rashi would not have brought any aggadah,
אפילו ווען פריער וואלט רש"י ניט געבראכט קיין אגדה,
But since here there is "need for words of aggadah",
וויבאלד אבער אז דא איז "צריכים לדברי אגדה",
Rashi must bring it here.
דארף עס רש"י דא ברענגען.
From the language "even in this we need words of aggadah" it is implied,
פון דעם לשון "אף בזה אנו צריכים לדברי אגדה" איז משמע,
that the words of aggadah here have a connection,
אז די דברי אגדה דא האבן א שייכות,
similarity to the derash on Bereishit bara.
ענלעכקייט צום דרש אויף בראשית ברא.
Is the explanation in this: In the commentary on the first verse "Bereishis bara" Rashi explains "This verse says nothing but darshuni,
איז דער ביאור בזה: אין דעם פירוש אויפן ערשטן פסוק "בראשית ברא" איז רש"י מפרש "אין המקרא הזה אומר אלא דרשוני,

By this that the Torah precedes <b>Bereishis</b>

איז מגלה די פנימית ואמיתית פון דער בריאה; דאס איז ניט א מציאות צוליב זיך נאר בשביל התורה ובשביל ישראל.
Thus it is regarding the existence of the light,
עד"ז איז עס בנוגע צו מציאות האור,
that "even in this we need words of aggadah",
אז "אף בזה אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה",
one must also reveal the inner aspect of the light: light is not an existence for its own sake —
מ׳דארף אויך מגלה זיין די פנימיות האור: אור איז ניט א מציאות בשביל עצמו —
created beings are an existence in their own right,
נבראים זיינען א מציאות בפ"ע,
set apart from all of them is light,
אויסגעטיילט פון זיי אלעמען איז אור,
it is <b>simply</b> only <b>for the sake of</b>,
ער איז בפשטות נאר בשביל ,
its essence is <b>solely</b> that through it the things that exist in the creation are revealed and made visible
ענינו איז בלויז וואס דורך אים ווערן נתגלה ונראה די זאכן וואס זיינען פאראן אין דער בריאה
(without the light they are in hidden darkness)36
(אן דעם אור זיינען זיי בהעלם חשוך)
"Aggadah" however reveals the innerness of the light,
"אגדה" איז אבער מגלה פנימיות האור,
that the innerness of his existence is not only the matter of the revealer — "the light" within it — but the "good" within it37.
אז פנימיות מציאותו איז ניט נאר ענין המגלה — "האור" שבו — נאר דער "טוב" שבו .
And this is also an introduction which explains Rashi's commentary in the verse after this:
און דאס איז אויך א הקדמה וועלכע איז מבאר דעם פירוש רש"י אין דעם פסוק שלאח"ז:
Rashi explains on this verse38
רש"י איז מפרש אויף דעם פסוק
"And it was evening and it was morning, one day" — "According to the order of the language of the passage, it should have written 'first day' etc. Why did it write 'one'? Because the Holy One, blessed be He, was alone in His world, for the angels were not created until the second day."
"ויהי ערב ויהי בקר יום אחד" — "לפי סדר לשון הפרשה הי׳ לו לכתוב יום ראשון כו׳ למה כתב אחד לפי שהי׳ הקב"ה יחיד בעולמו שלא נבראו המלאכים עד יום שני".
And at first glance: Even though the angels were created on the second day,
ולכאורה: אע"פ אז מלאכים נבראו ביום שני,
nevertheless, on the first day the creation of light came about — how can one say "that the Holy One, blessed be He, was <b>alone</b> in His world",
איז דאך אבער ביום ראשון צוגעקומען בריאת האור — ווי קען מען זאגן "שהי׳ הקב"ה יחיד בעולמו",
which indicates that there was no other creation?
וואס ווייזט אז ס׳איז ניט געווען קיין שום אנדער בריאה?
And the answer to this is explained based on the words of Aggadah which reveal the "good" that exists in this light.
און דער תירוץ אויף דעם ווערט מבואר ע"פ די דברי אגדה וואס איז מגלה דעם "טוב" וואס איז דא אין דעם אור.

ז.
The explanation of this:
די הסברה בזה:
It is explained in many places39
ס׳איז מבואר בכ"מ
in the interpretation of the verse40
בפירוש הכתוב
"See I have placed before you today the life and the good and the death and the evil" and following this one says41
"ראה נתתי לפניך היום את החיים ואת הטוב ואת המות ואת הרע" ובהמשך לזה זאגט מען
"And you shall choose life" — then life and death does not mean literally,
"ובחרת בחיים" — אז חיים ומות מיינט ניט כפשוטו,
because "who is so foolish"42
ווארום "מי זה פתי"
who would not choose life and good instead of the opposite.
וואס וועט ניט אויסקלייבן אין חיים וטוב אנשטאט ההיפך.
Rather the explanation in this is that every created being during its life and existence there is in it life and death.
נאר דער פירוש אין דעם איז אז יעדער נברא בשעת חיותו וקיומו איז דא אין אים חיים ומות.
The physicality of the thing and its materiality is "death" because the thing does not create and enliven itself.
די גשמיות הדבר און חומריותו איז "מות" ווארום אין הדבר בורא און מחי׳ זיך אליין.
And the spirituality,
און די רוחניות,
the power of the Creator, the G‑dly within it, is the matter of life.
כח הבורא האלקי שבו איז דער ענין פון חיים.
The created being's life and — in general,
דעם נברא׳ס חיים און — בכלל,
in this there is no annihilation,
אין דעם איז ניטא קיין כליון,
it is "in the manner of eternal existence"42.
ס׳איז "בבחי׳ קיום נצחי" .
And in this itself there are two levels43
און אין דעם גופא זיינען דא צוויי מדריגות
: The life in every created being is the level of G‑dliness that enclothes itself in it to enliven it,
: דער חיים אין יעדן נברא איז די מדריגה פון אלקות וואס איז זיך מתלבש אין אים להחיותו,
the aspect of immanent; and the good
בחי׳ ממכ"ע; און דער טוב
(about which it is said44
(וואס אויף דעם ווערט געזאגט
"for Your loving-kindness is better than life")
"כי טוב חסדך מחיים")
is the aspect of G‑dliness that is higher than the enclothing to enliven created beings,
איז די בחי׳ פון אלקות וואס איז העכער פאר התלבשות צו מחי׳ זיין נבראים,
the aspect of transcendent that is in the immanent.
בחי׳ סוכ"ע שבממלא.
And the aggadah of the Torah reveals also the secret and inwardness of "light"45,
און אגדה שבתורה איז מגלה אויך דעם רז ופנימיות פון "אור" ,
that the true reality of it is not that which it causes, that the physicality and reality of the created being is revealed,
אז אמיתית מציאותו איז ניט דאס וואס עס פועל׳ט אז עס ווערט אנטפלעקט די גשמיות ומציאות הנברא,
but rather that which is revealed is the true reality that is in the created being,
נאר דאס וואס עס ווערט נתגלה די אמת׳ע מציאות שבנברא,
the word of God that constitutes it, enlivens it, and sustains it,
דער דבר ה׳ וואס איז אים מהווה מחי׳ ומקיים,
up to the level of "good" of Divinity,
ביז צו מדריגת "טוב" פון אלקות,
the aspect of the Transcendent One that is present in all created beings.
בחי׳ סוכ"ע וואס איז דא אין אלע נבראים.
And this matter is "He saw that it was not fitting for the wicked to use it",
און דעם ענין איז "ראהו שאינו כדאי להשתמש בו רשעים",
because then there would be lacking46
ווארום דעמאלט וועט פעלן
the matter of free choice47.
דער ענין הבחירה .
<b>Seeing</b> the truth in every created being, that its true reality is the divine life-force,
זעענדיק דעם אמת שבכל נברא אז אמיתית מציאותו איז דער חיות אלקי,
it is then not possible to choose its opposite,
איז דאך ניט שייך צו בוחר זיין הפכו,
therefore "He set it apart for the righteous in the future",
דעריבער "הבדילו לצדיקים לעתיד לבא",
when there will be <b>and every being shall know</b> that You have made it etc.48,
וואס דעמאלט וועט זיין וידע כל פעול כי אתה פעלתו כו׳ ,
until "and all flesh shall see49
ביז אז "וראו
together that the mouth of God has spoken",
כל בשר יחדיו כי פי ה׳ דיבר",
the "by the word50
דעם בדבר
of God the heavens were made" etc.51.
ה׳ שמים נעשו גו׳ .
And this is the continuation of "אף בזה אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה" to the homily in בראשית ברא:
און דאס איז דער המשך פון "אף בזה אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה" צום דרש אין בראשית ברא:
Just as in the creation in general — although Torah and Israel are seemingly a matter that comes later in creation — one immediately reveals that this is the <b>purpose</b> of creation,
כשם ווי אין דער בריאה בכלל — כאטש תורה וישראל זיינען לכאורה אן ענין וואס קומט אין דער בריאה שפעטער — איז מען גלייך מגלה אז דאס איז מטרת הבריאה,
"For the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel",
"בשביל התורה ובשביל ישראל",
Regarding this in the matter of the light,
עד"ז בענין האור,
Although that the "good" of the light He separated for the righteous <b>for the future to come</b>,
אע"פ אז דעם "טוב" שבאור איז הבדילו לצדיקים לעת"ל ,
Is <b>this</b> however the true essence of the light.
איז דאס אבער די אמיתית הענין פון אור.
And therefore the creation of the light on the first day is no contradiction to that which one says that on the first day "the Holy One, blessed be He, was alone in His world".
און דעריבער איז בריאת האור ביום ראשון קיין סתירה ניט דערצו וואס מ׳זאגט אז ביום הראשון "הי׳ הקב"ה יחיד בעולמו".
Because on the contrary,
ווארום אדרבה,
The true essence of the light that was created on the first day is
דער אמת׳ער ענין פון אור שנברא ביום ראשון איז
(the encompassing light that is above the chain of descent52)
(אור הסובב שלמעלה מהשתלשלות )
the aspect of good53
בחי׳ טוב
in it,
שבו,
whose essence is to reveal in the creation itself that there is no existence besides Him54,
שענינו איז צו מגלה זיין אין דער בריאה גופא אז ס׳איז ניטא קיין שום מציאות זולתו ,
"the Holy One, blessed be He, is alone in His world"55.
"הקב"ה יחיד בעולמו" .

With this, Rashi also hints at a directive in the Torah study of a Jew,
דערמיט איז רש"י אויך מרמז א הוראה אין דעם לימוד התורה פון א אידן,
Therefore he emphasizes "even in this <b>we</b> need the words of Aggadah" and does not say simply "even in this we need the words of Aggadah":
וואס דערפאר איז ער מדגיש "אף בזה אנו צריכים לדברי אגדה" און זאגט ניט סתם "אף בזה צריכים לדברי אגדה":
A Jew can have a question: Granted, those Jews who are constantly occupied with matters of creation,
בא א אידן קען ווערן א קס"ד: בשלמא אט די אידן וואס האבן שטענדיק צו טאן מיט עניני הבריאה,
"the heavens and the earth",
"את השמים ואת הארץ",
and in general, the Children of Israel who are businessmen,
ובכללות בנ"י בעלי עסק,
they need to arrive at "this verse says nothing but 'seek Me'",
דארפן זיי אנקומען צו "אין המקרא הזה אומר אלא דרשוני",
to the exposition in the Torah,
צו דרש שבתורה,
to reveal that "In the beginning, He created" — is "for the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel".
אויף מגלה זיין אז "בראשית ברא" — איז "בשביל התורה ובשביל ישראל".
Since he has to do with matters of the world,
וויבאלד ער האט צו טאן מיט עניני העולם,
this can confuse him and disturb him from his service of G‑d,
קען דאס אים מבלבל זיין און שטערן צו זיין עבודת ה׳,
or at least the existence of the world occupies space for him — he must come to the discourses of the Torah that should reveal to him and remind him that the world is not an independent existence,
אדער עכ"פ די מציאות העולם איז בא אים תופס מקום — דארף ער אנקומען צו דרשות התורה וואס זאלן אים מגלה זיין און דערמאנען אז די וועלט איז ניט קיין מציאות בפ"ע,
but was created for the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel.
נאר איז באשאפן געווארן בשביל התורה ובשביל ישראל.
And this effects upon him that his having to do with matters of the world does not disturb his service of G‑d,
און דאס פועל׳ט אויף אים אז זיין האבן צו טאן מיט עניני עולם שטערט ניט צו זיין עבודת ה׳,
and on the contrary,
ואדרבה,
through his service for the sake of Heaven56
דורך זיין עבודה לשם שמים
and in all your ways know Him57
ובכל דרכיך דעהו
he makes <b>the world</b> into a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He.
מאכט ער די וועלט פאר א דירה לו ית׳.
But a Jew, a dweller of the tent,
אבער א איד א יושב אהל,
who has to do only with matters of "light"58,
וואס האט צו טאן בלויז מיט עניני "אור" ,
"a candle is a commandment and the Torah is light"59,
"נר מצוה ותורה אור" ,
he is constantly within the luminous four cubits of halachah
ער איז שטענדיק אין די ליכטיקע ד׳ אמות של הלכה
(and of prayer),
(ושל תפלה),
he does not need to come to the study of aggados and the inner dimension of the Torah.
דארף ער ניט אנקומען צום לימוד האגדות ופנימיות התורה.
On this Rashi says the instruction "even <b>in this we</b> need <b>words of Aggadah</b>": also in this dealing with matters of the light of the Torah
אויף דעם זאגט רש"י די הוראה "אף בזה אנו צריכין לדברי אגדה ": אויך אין דעם עסק בעניני אור שבתורה
(until Rashi says "even we" he includes also himself),
(ביז אז רש"י זאגט "אף אנו" ער איז כולל אויך זיך),
must come to words of Aggadah,
דארפן אנקומען לדברי אגדה,
and in the language of the old Rebbe in Hilchos Talmud Torah60
ובלשון פון אלטן רבי׳ן בהל׳ ת"ת
that the study must be also "in the homilies of the Aggadot to contemplate from them moral instruction to know God as the Sages said 'Do you wish to know He who spoke and the world came into being? Study <b>words of</b> <b>Aggadah</b> for through this you come to know the Holy One, blessed be He, and cleave to His ways, for most secrets of the Torah which is the wisdom of Kabbalah and knowledge of God are hidden in the Aggadot'",
אז דער לימוד דארף זיין אויך "בדרשות ההגדות להתבונן מתוכם מוסר השכל לידע את ה׳ כמו שאמרו חכמים רצונך שתכיר מי שאמר והי׳ העולם למוד דברי אגדה שמתוך כך אתה מכיר את הקב"ה ומתדבק בדרכיו כי רוב סודות התורה שהיא חכמת הקבלה וידיעת ה׳ גנוזים באגדות",
The study of the inner dimension of the Torah61,
דער לימוד פנימיות התורה ,
which in our time has been revealed in the teachings of Chassidus,
וואס בימינו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות,
one must have not only for the sake of learning and knowing <b>another</b> part of the Torah and for the sake of fulfilling the command62
דארף מען האבן ניט נאר צוליב לערנען און וויסן נאך א חלק פון תורה און צוליב מקיים זיין דעם ציווי
"Know the God of your father",
"דע את אלקי אביך",
but it pertains "even in this",
נאר עס איז נוגע "אף בזה",
in the matter of the light,
אין דעם ענין האור,
in the study of Torah [which is] light.
אין לימוד התורה אור.
It must be that the blessing over the Torah is <b>first</b>63
עס מוז זיין ברכו בתורה תחלה
— then the Torah — Torah is light,
— דאמאלס איז די תורה — תורה אור,
becomes for him an elixir of life64,
נעשית לו סם חיים ,
when he knows and perceives the inner dimension and the truth of Torah,
ווען ער ווייס און דערהערט די פנימיות און דעם אמת פון תורה,
the good that is in the Torah,
דעם טוב שבתורה,
that this is "He gave us <b>His Torah</b>",
אז דאס איז נתן לנו את תורתו ,
the Torah of God,
תורת ה׳,
and through it he connects himself with the Giver of the Torah.
ועל ידה פארבינדט ער זיך מיטן נותן התורה.
And this is indeed the content of the blessing over the Torah,
וואס דאס איז דאך דער תוכן ברכת התורה,
as the Baal HaTurim65
ווי דער ב"ח לטור
— the revealed dimension of Torah — explains "so that our soul may be absorbed in the essence and spirituality and holiness of the source of the Torah's origin ..
— נגלה דתורה — איז מבאר "כדי שתתעצם נשמתינו בעצמות ורוחניות וקדושת מקור מוצא התורה ..
a chariot and sanctuary for His Shechinah, may He be blessed..
מרכבה והיכל לשכינתו ית׳..
the Shechinah literally within them".
השכינה ממש בקרבם".
And to this one comes through the study of the inner dimension of Torah,
און צו דעם קומט מען צו דורכן לימוד פון פנימיות התורה,
which is of the aspect of the Tree of Life66
וואס איז בחי׳ עץ החיים
— Divinity is revealed in it openly.
— אלקות איז אין איר מאיר בגלוי.
And through the study of the inner dimension of Torah
און דורך דעם לימוד פון פנימיות התורה
(together with the study of the revealed dimension of Torah"67),
(צוזאמען מיטן לימוד פון נגלה דתורה" ),
says Ra'aya Mehemna that one goes "from exile with mercy"68,
זאגט רעיא מהימנא אז מען גייט "מן גלותא ברחמים" ,
in the true and complete redemption,
בגאולה האמיתית והשלימה,
when there will be revealed the light that was set aside for the righteous for the future to come,
ווען עס וועט נתגלה ווערן דער אור שהבדילו לצדיקים לעתיד לבא,
speedily in our days literally,
במהרה בימינו ממש,
in our time.
בעגלא דידן.
