From the verse1
פון פםוק
"And Israel encamped there opposite the mountain"
״ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר
Rashi quotes the words "And Israel encamped there" and explains: "as one person with one heart, but all the other encampments were with complaints2
איז רש״י מעתיק די ווערטער "ויחן שם ישראל" און איז מפרש: "כאיש אחד בלב אחד אבל שאר כל החניות בתרעומות
and with dissension."
ובמחלוקת".
As one learns simply3,
ווי מ׳לערנט בפשטות ,
the precision and explanation in Rashi is as in the Mechilta4,
איז דער דיוק ופירוש אין רש״י ווי אין מכילתא ,
that here it says "and he encamped" - singular form,
אז דא שטייט ״ויחן״ - לשון יחיד,
not as everywhere where it says "and they encamped" - plural form.
ניט ווי אומעטום וואו עם שטייט ״ויחנו״ - לשון רבים.
Rashi explains,
איז רש״י מבאר,
because the encampment at that time was "as one person with one heart, but all the other encampments were with complaints and with dissension"
ווייל די חני׳ דעמאלט איז געווען "כאיש אחד בלב אחד אבל שאר כל החניות בתרעומות ובמחלוקת"
(and therefore everywhere it says "and they encamped" plural form).
(און דערפאר שטייט אומע־ טום "ויחנו" לשון רבים).
According to this, however, one must understand: since the entire precision of Rashi is from "ויחן
לפ״ז דארף מען אבער פארשטיין: ווי־ באלד דער גאנצער דיוק פון רש״י איז פון "ויחן
(singular form)
(לשון יחיד)
Rashi should have quoted only the word "ויחן"; why does he also bring down the words "שם ישראל"?
האט דאך רש״י געדארפט מעתיק זיין נאר דעם ווארט ״ויחן״; פארוואם ברענגט ער אראפ אויך די ווערטער "שם ישראל"?
That which Rashi also brings the word "שם" - one can say: according to Rashi, also that which "all the other encampments were with complaints and strife" is learned,
דאם וואם רש״י ברענגט אויך דעם ווארט ״שם״ - יש לומר: לויט רש״י איז אויך דאם וואם "שאר כל החניות בתרעומות ובמחלוקת" לערנט מען אפ,
not only - as in the Mechilta - from that which <b>there</b> it says "ויחנו" plural form,
ניט נאר - ווי אין מכילתא - פון דעם וואם דארט שטייט "ויחנו" ל׳ רבים,
but from the verse itself - "ויחן <b>שם</b>"5,
נאר פון דעם פםוק גופא - "ויחן שם " ,
that
אז
Only "there" was "and he encamped" in the singular
בלויז ״שם״ איז געווען ״ויחן״ ל׳ יחיד
("as one person with one heart"),
("כאיש אחד בלב אחד"),
and not regarding "the rest of the encampments".
און ניט ביי "שאר כל החניות".
And on the contrary - <b>only </b>from there one sees that the rest of the encampments were with complaints and with dispute,
ואדרבא - נאר פון דאנעט וויים מען אז שאר החניות בתרעומות ובמחלוקת,
<b>from the superfluity </b>of the verse "<b>there</b>".
מיתורא דקרא " שם ".
But what it says "and they encamped" - can be <b>literally</b>,
דאם אבער וואם עם שטייט "ויחנו" - קען זיין כפשוטו ,
it speaks about several
עם רעדט זיך וועגן עטלעכע
(different)
(פארשידענע)
people tribes etc. - but they are not at all in dispute and complaints with each other.
מענטשן שבטים וכו׳ - אבער זיי זיינען כלל ניט במחלוקת ותרעומות זע״ז.
But the question remains: why does Rashi also bring down the further word "Israel"6?
עם בלייבט אבער די שאלה" פארוואם ברענגט רש״י אראפ אויך דעם ווייטער־ דיקן ווארט "ישראל" ?
And on the contrary: with this that Rashi quotes the word "Israel" the commentary will become very difficult.
ואדרבה: מיט דעם וואם רש״י איז מעתיק דעם ווארט "ישראל" ווערט גאר שווער זיין פירוש.
Because since it says the expression "Israel",
ווארום וויבאלד עם שטייט דער לשון "ישראל",
which means all Jews as <b>one</b> collective
וואם מיינט אלע אידן ווי איין כלל
(nation),
(פאלק),
then accordingly the expression "they encamped"7 is appropriate
איז דאך דערביי מתאים דער לשון ״ריחן״
singular expression - and from where does he derive that this means "as one person with one heart"?
לשון יחיד - ומנ״ל לדייק אז דאם מיינט "כאיש אחד בלב אחד"?
2.
ב.
Seemingly one can say that Rashi's proof is not
לכאורה קען מען זאגן אז רש״י׳ם הכרח איז ניט
(so)
(אזוי)
from the expression "and he encamped" by itself,
פון דעם לשון "ויחן" פאר זיך,
but from the <b>change</b> in the verse itself: earlier it says in
נאר פון דעם שינוי אין דעם פםוק גופא: פריער שטייט אין
Verse "<b>And they encamped </b>in the wilderness"
פסוק " ויחנו במדבר"
(plural)
(ל׳ רבים)
And immediately afterwards it says "And he appointed there"
און תיכך לאח״ז שטייט "וימן שם״
(singular)
(ל׳ יחיד)
- From the fact that in one continuation of the verse the Torah changes from "and they encamped" to "and he encamped" it is proven that "opposite the mountain" they were "as one man with one heart".
- פון דעם וואס אין איין המשך הכתוב איז די תורה משנה פון "ויחנו" צו "ויחן" איז מוכח אז "נגד ההר" זיינען זיי געווען "כאיש אחד בלב אחד".
One must however understand: We find in many places in the Torah that in the same verse and in one continuation, regarding the Jewish people, both expressions are said - plural expression and singular expression,
מ׳דארך אבער פארשטיין: מ׳געפינט בכ״מ בתורה אז אין דעמזעלבן פסוק ובהמשך אחד ווערן בנוגע עם ישראל געזאגט ביידע לשונות - לשון רבים און לשון יחיד,
as we find further in our parshah8
ווי מען געפינט ווייטער בפרשתנו
: "<b>And saw </b>the people <b>and they moved and they stood </b>from afar",
: " וירא העם וינועו ויעמדו מרחוק",
and also in the previous parshah9
און אויך אין דעם פריערדיקער סדרה
: "<b>And saw </b>Israel the great hand etc. <b>and they feared </b>the people etc. <b>and they believed </b>etc."10
: " וירא ישראל את היד הגדולה גו׳ וייראו העם גו׳ ויאמינו גו׳" .
3.
ג.
Also one must understand: the source of Rashi,
אויך דארף מען פארשטיין: דער מקור פון פרש״י,
in plain sense,
בפשטות,
is from the Mechilta11,
איז פון מכילתא ,
but the wording in the Mechilta is: "Every place that it says 'and they journeyed' and 'and they encamped' they journey in dissension and they encamp in dissension, but here they were equal
אבער דער לשון אין מכילתא איז: "כל מקום שהוא אומר ויסעו ויחנו נוסעים במחלוקת וחונים במחלוקת אבל כאן הושוו
as one heart, therefore it is said 'and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain'".
לב אחד לכך נאמר ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר".
From the differences between the language of Rashi and the language of the Mechilta13
פון די שינויים צווישן ל׳ רש״י און ל׳ המכילתא
: a)
: א)
In the Mechilta it stands "here they were equal
אין מכילתא שטייט "כאן הושוו
(all12)
(כולם)
(all)
(כולם)
as one heart"14,
לב אחד" ,
and Rashi
און רש״י
It specifies "as one person with one heart"15.
איז מפרט "כאיש אחד בלב אחד" .
b)
ב)
In the Mechilta it says "they travel etc. and they encamp in dispute"16
אין מכילתא שטייט "נוסעים כו׳ וחונים במחלוקת״
and in Rashi's commentary there are <b>two</b> expressions "with resentment and in dispute".
און אין פי׳ רש״י שטייען צוויי לשונות "בתרעומות ובמחלוקת".
c)
ג)
In the Mechilta it concludes "therefore it says 'and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain'"17,
אין מכילתא פירט זיך אויס "לכך נאמר ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר" ,
and Rashi only comments on "and Israel encamped there" and does not quote "opposite the mountain".
און רש״י שטעלט זיך נאר אויך "ויחן שם ישראל" און איז ניט מעתיק "נגד ההר".
d.
ד.
Also one must understand: the same content of Rashi's commentary here,
אויך דארף מען פארשטיין: דעם זעלבן תוכן פון רש״י׳ס פירוש דא,
but with changes,
אבער בשינוים,
is found in his commentary in the previous Torah portion:
געפינט מען בפירושו אין דער פריערדיקער סדרה:
From the verse18
פון דעם פסוק
"And the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, Egypt was journeying after them" — Rashi cites the words "journeying after them" and explains "with one heart as one man."
"וישאו בנ״י את עיניהם והנה מצרים נוסע אחריהם" איז רש״י מעתיק די ווערטער "נוסע אחריהם" און איז מפרש "בלב אחד כאיש אחד".
One sees that there Rashi does <b>not</b> cite
זעט מען אז דארט איז רש״י ניט מעתיק
(also)
(אויך)
the word "Egypt
דעם ווארט "מצרים
(journeying after them)
(נוסע אחריהם)
" — not as in his commentary here where he does cite the word "Israel" — and the reason simply is,
״ - ניט ווי בפירושו כאן וואו ער איז יע מעתיק דעם ווארט "ישראל" - און דער טעם בפשטות איז,
as above,
כנ״ל,
because this <b>contradicts</b> the precision of "journeying" in the singular,
ווייל דאס איז סותר דעם דיוק פון "נוסע" ל׳ יחיד,
since it refers to the nation as <b>one</b> collective.
וויבאלד עס באציט זיך צום פאלק אלס איין כלל.
But there the question arises: a)
עם שטעלט זיך אבער דארט די שאלה: א)
In the <b>verse</b> it says indeed "<b>Egypt</b> journeying after them" — does this not contradict Rashi's precision "with one heart as one man"19?
אין פסוק שטייט דאך " מצרים נוסע אחריהם״ - איז דאם דאך סותר דיוק רש״י "בלב אחד כאיש אחד" ?
b)
ב)
What does Rashi quote
וואס איז רש״י מעתיק
(also)
(אויך)
the word "after them"?
דעם ווארט "אחריהם"?
c)
ג)
In his commentary here in our parshah, the order is "as one man with one heart",
בפירושו כאן בפרשתנו איז דער סדר "כאיש אחד בלב אחד",
and there - "with one heart as one man"20.
און דארטן - "בלב אחד כאיש אחד" .
5.
ה.
The explanation of all this:
דער ביאור בכל זה:
That which regarding a multitude or an entire nation is sometimes used plural language and sometimes singular language,
דאס וואס בנוגע א רבים אדער א גאנצן פאלק ווערט לפעמים גענוצט לשון רבים און אמאל לשון יחיד,
it is reasonable to say in the simple sense that this is when it speaks about <b>an action</b>.
מסתבר לומר ע״ד הפשט אז דאס איז ווען עס רעדט זיך וועגן א פעולה .
In which there are two manners: when a multitude does the action in a manner <b>equal and unified</b>,
וואס אין דעם זיינען פאראן צוויי אופנים: ווען א רבים טוען די פעולה באופן שוה ואחד ,
then they can all be designated as a single one,
דעמאלט קענען זיי אלע באצייכענט ווערן אלס א יחיד,
because it is one and the same action21
ווייל עס טוט זיך איינע און די זעלבע פעולה
; and when the action is done in <b>multiple</b> manners by different people from the group
; און ווען די פעולה ווערט געטאן באופנים רבים דורך פארשידענע מענטשן פון דער קבוצה
(nation)
(פאלק)
it is said in plural language,
ווערט געזאגט לשון רבים,
there is in this no matter that should unify them as one collective.
ס׳איז ניטא אין דעם אן ענין וואס זאל זיי מאחד זיין אלס איין כלל.
But not so when it speaks about a feeling,
משא״כ בשעת עס רעדט זיך וועגן א געפיל,
intellectual thought and the like of a multitude - which in this there is indeed in their opinions
מחשבת שכל וכיו״ב פון א רבים - וואס אין דעם איז דאך אין דיעותיהם
(or their feelings etc.)
(או רגשותיהם וכו׳)
equal22
שוות
is this
איז דאס
Always in <b>many</b> ways23
אלעמאל אין אופנים רבים
- then the plural is said.
- דעמאלט ווערט געזאגט לשון רבים.
Therefore it is no wonder that one finds,
דעריבער איז ניט קיין תמי׳ וואס מ׳געפינט,
that regarding the general principle of a people and nation the verse uses both languages - both plural language and singular language,
אז בנוגע דעם כלל פון א פאלק ואומה נוצט דער פסוק ביידע לשונות - סיי לשון רבים און סיי לשון יחיד,
and sometimes even both in one verse - because this depends on what it refers to.
און לפעמים אפילו ביידע אין איין פסוק - ווייל דאס איז תלוי צו וואס עס באציט זיך.
And as we see in the aforementioned verse "And Israel saw the great hand etc. and the people feared etc. and they believed etc.": "And he saw" of the Jews,
און ווי מיר זעען בפסוק הנ״ל "וירא ישראל את היד הגדולה גו׳ וייראו העם גו׳ ויאמינו גו׳": "וירא" פון די אידן,
which means seeing literally
וואס מיינט ראי׳ כפשוטה
(their seeing "which the Lord did in Egypt"),
(זייער זען "אשר עשה ה׳ במצרים"),
they were all equal in this
זיינען זיי אלע געווען גלייך אין דעם
(therefore "and he saw" is singular language)
(דערפאר איז "וירא" ל׳ יחיד)
; but in their fear of the Lord and in their "and they believed in the Lord",
; אבער אין זייער יראה מה׳ און אין זייער "ויאמינו בה׳",
there were certainly many levels,
איז דאך זיכער געווען כו״כ דרגות,
in this there was "and they feared" and "and they believed"
אין דעם איז געווען "וייראו" און "ויאמינו"
(plural language)
(לשון רבים)
- for each one in a particular manner24.
- ביי יעדן איינעם אויף א באזונ־ דער אופן .
And similarly regarding the verse in our portion "<b>And they saw </b>the people <b>and they moved and they stood </b>from afar": the matter of "and they saw",
ועד״ז בנוגע דעם פסוק בפרשתנו " וירא העם וינועו ויעמדו מרחוק": אינעם ענין פון "וירא",
seeing <b>simply</b>,
ראי׳ כפשוטה ,
they were all equal - one seeing
זיינען זיי אלע געווען גלייך - איין ראי׳
(united them as one),
(האט זיי פאראייניקט כאחד),
as above; but "and they moved" and "and they stood from afar",
וכנ״ל; משא״כ "וינועו" און "ויעמדו מרחוק",
which are connected with their feeling and excitement and the like,
וועלכע זיינען פארבונדן מיט זייער געפיל און אויפטרייסלונג וכיו״ב,
is in the plural due to the multiplicity of manners and differences among them25.
איז מתאים לשון רבים צוליב דעם ריבוי האופנים והחילוקים ביניהם .
6.
ו.
In the verse "And Pharaoh drew near and the children of Israel lifted their eyes and behold Egypt <b>was traveling after them</b>",
אין דעם פסוק "ופרעה הקריב וישאו בנ״י את עיניהם והנה מצרים נוסע אחריהם ",
the emphasis is not on <b>traveling</b>26
איז די הדגשה ניט אויף נוסע
- the act of traveling but on <b>after them </b>- the <b>intent </b>of the travel,
- פעולת הנסיעה נאר אויף אחריהם -דער מכוון הנסיעה,
that this is a <b>pursuit after them </b>which is connected with and He turned <b>the heart </b>of Pharaoh and his servants,
אז דאס איז א רדיפה אחריהם וואס איז פארבונדן מיט ויהפך לבב פרעה ועבדיו,
with their wickedness and evil intentions -
מיט זייער רשעות און כוונות רעות -
And in this not all Egyptians were equal,
און אין דעם זיינען ניט אלע מצריים געווען גלייך,
certainly they were divided: Pharaoh,
זיכער זיינען מחולק: פרעה,
the magicians of Egypt,
חרטומי מצרים,
those who were "fearful of the word of the Lord"27,
די וואס זיינען געווען "ירא את דבר ה׳" ,
and those who did not fear the word of the Lord,
און די וואס לא יראו דבר ה׳,
and in particular - those who begged Pharaoh that he should let the Jews out of Egypt - it should seemingly have stood "traveling" in the plural.
און בפרט - די וואס האבן זיך געבעטן בא פרעה׳ן ער זאל ארויסלאזן די אידן פון מצרים - האט דאך לכאורה געדארפט שטיין "נוסעים" לשון רבים.
So Rashi explains and innovates "with one heart as one man",
איז רש״י מפרש ומחדש "בלב אחד כאיש אחד",
that on the contrary,
אז אדרבה,
that which it says "traveling" in the singular is because their journey was "<b>after them</b>",
דאס וואס עס שטייט "נוסע" לשון יחיד איז דערפאר וואס זייער נסיעה איז געווען " אחריהם ",
pursuing the Jews28
נאכיאגן די אידן
- in this pursuing the Jews there was among them
- אין דעם נאכיאגן די אידן איז ביי זיי געווען
(not as one might think,
(ניט ווי מ׳קען מיינען,
that in this there were differences on account of and in the manner of the various types mentioned above,
אז אין דעם זיינען געווען חילוקים מצד וע״ד די סוגים שונים הנ״ל,
but rather all of them were)
נאר זיי אלע זיינען געווען)
"one heart" - with one heart that is full of hatred towards the Jews29,
"לב אחד" - מיט איין הארץ וואס איז פול מיט שנאה צו די אידן ,
and this caused
און דאס האט גורם
was that they should be "like one person"30
געווען אז זיי זאלן זיין ״כאיש אחד״
(and therefore the order is: "with one heart - like one person").
(און דערפאר איז דער סדר: "בלב אחד - כאיש אחד").
7.
ז.
Accordingly, it is understood in our parshah,
עד״ז איז מובן בפרשתנו,
in the explanation of the verse "and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain": regarding the actual encampment
אין דעם פירוש הפסוק "ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר": בנוגע דער עצם חני׳
(in its simple sense)
(במובנה הפשוט)
of the Jews in that place, the verse informs earlier - "and they encamped in the wilderness"; one must say that what the verse adds "and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain" comes to explain the "and they encamped" - their manner of the encampment31
פון די אידן אין יענעם ארט איז דער פסוק מודיע פריער - " ויחנו במדבר"; מוז מען זאגן אז דאס וואס דער פסוק איז מוסיף "ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר" קומט צו מבאר זיין דעם ויחנו - זייער אופן החני׳
and preparation for receiving the Torah,
און הכנה צו קבלת התורה,
which they needed to receive there.
וואס זיי האבן דארטן געדארפט מקבל זיין.
The question arises: the spiritual preparation and the will and preparation for the giving of the Torah was indeed in every Jew according to his level and spiritual state — different than in another Jew; starting from Moshe,
שטעלט זיך די שאלה: די הכנה נפשית און דער רצון און הכנה צו מתן תורה איז דאך בא יעדן אידן געווען לפי מדריגתו ומצבו הרוחני - אנדערש ווי ביים צווייטן אידן; אנהייבנדיק פון משה,
Aharon and the seventy elders,
אהרן און שבעים זקנים,
and others
און אנדערע
various levels until such a level
פארשידענע דרגות ביז צו אזא דרגא
(at the opposite extreme)
(אין קצה השני)
of Jews,
פון אידן,
who
וועלכע האבן
(even after the miracle of the
(אפי׳ נאכן נס פון קי
sea)
ם)
argued "Is the Lord in our midst?"32
גע׳טענה׳ט "היש ה׳ בקרבנו"
and the like.
וכיו״ב.
According to this, it should have also stood here "and they encamped there Israel
לפ״ז האט דאך אויך דא געדארפט שטיין ״ויחנו שם ישראל
(opposite the mountain)
(נגד ההר)
-in the plural34.
-בלשון רבים .
Rashi explains and quotes from the verse the words "and he encamped there Israel"
באווארנט רש״י און איז מעתיק פון פסוק די ווערטער "ויחן שם ישראל"
(but not the following words "opposite the mountain"),
(אבער ניט די ווייטערדיקע ווערטער "נגד ההר"),
that here the verse means that all "Israel" were all Jews "as one man"35,
אז דא מיינט דער פסוק אז אלם " ישראל " זיינען אלע אידן געווען "כאיש אחד" ,
with a unity of one with the other - and not from the aspect of their standing
מיט אן איחוד פון איינעם מיטן צווייטן - און ניט מצד זייער שטייען
(according to their levels in the preparation and desire)
(לפי דרגותיהם אין דער הכנה ורצון)
"opposite the mountain" to receive the Torah.
"נגד ההר" צו מקבל זיין תורה.
And the unity caused among them that they should be "with one heart",
און די אחדות האט ביי זיי ארויסגע־ רופן אז זיי זאלן זיין "בלב אחד",
all with one and the same will in heart to receive the Torah36.
אלע מיט איין און דעם זעלבן רצון בלב צו מקבל זיין תורה .
8.
ח.
This is also the change and difference between the "with one heart as one man" by the Egyptians and the "as one man with one heart" of the Jews:
דאם איז אויך דער שינוי והפרש צווישן דעם "בלב אחד כאיש אחד" בא די מצרים און דעם "כאיש אחד בלב אחד" פון אידן:
In Egypt their becoming "as one man" came as a result of the "one heart" in the "traveled <b>after them</b>",
בא מצרים איז זייער ווערן "כאיש אחד" געקומען אלם מסובב פון דעם "בלב אחד" אין דעם "נוסע אחריהם ",
of the Jews,
נאך אידן,
but they themselves as "Egypt" were not all as one37
אבער זיי אליין אלס "מצרים" זיינען ניט געווען אלע ווי איינס
- and therefore Rashi quotes the words "traveled after them" and not the preceding word "Egypt
- און דעריבער איז רש״י מעתיק די ווערטער "נוסע אחריהם" און ניט דעם פריערדיקן ווארט "מצרים
(traveled after them)
(נוסע אחריהם)
But in our portion, among the Jews the unity
משא״כ בפרשתנו איז ביי אידן די אחדות
("as one man")
("כאיש אחד")
was from the very fact that they are <b>Jews </b>-"as one man",
געווען מצד דעם גופא וואס זיי זיינען אידן -"כאיש אחד",
and therefore here Rashi quotes and emphasizes the "<b>and he encamped </b>there <b>Israel</b>"39,
און דעריבער איז דא רש״י מעתיק ומדגיש דעם " ויחן שם ישראל " ,
and the unity had for them
און די אחדות האט ביי זיי
Called the "with one heart" - to the receiving of the Torah.
ארויםגערופן דעם ״בלב אחד״ - צו קבלת התורה.
According to the Mechilta however, their unity expressed itself in that they "were equal
לויט דער מכילתא אבער האט זיך זייער אחדות ארויםגעזאגט אין דעם וואם " הושוו
(all of them)
(כולם)
with one heart"40,
לב אחד" ,
All Jews were alike in having one heart and one will for the receiving of the Torah41
אלע אידן האבן זיך אויםגעגליכן אין האבן א לב ורצון אחד צו קבלת התורה
-therefore the Mechilta concludes "therefore it is said 'and Israel encamped there <b>opposite the mountain</b>'".
-דעריבער פירט אוים די מכילתא "לכך נאמר ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר ".
9.
ט.
According to the above,
ע״פ הנ״ל,
So according to Rashi there were two matters: "as one man" - the unity among Jews,
אז לויט רש״י זיינען דא געווען צוויי ענינים: ״כאיש אחד״ - די אחדות צווישן אידן,
"with one heart" - the one will to receive the Torah,
״בלב אחד״ - דער רצון אחד צו קבלת התורה,
One will also understand the duplication of language in the continuation of Rashi's language "but all the other encampments were with complaints and with quarreling": since the verse emphasizes "and he encamped <b>there </b>Israel",
וועט מען אויך פארשטיין דער כפל הלשון אין המשך לשון רש״י "אבל שאר כל החניות בתרעומות ובמחלוקת": ווי־ באלד דער פםוק איז מדגיש "ויחן שם ישראל",
it is understandable,
איז פארשטאנדיק,
that this unity was only "there",
אז אט די אחדות איז געווען בלויז "שם",
at Mount Sinai; "but all the other encampments were with complaints and with quarreling"42
ביים בארג םיני; ״אבל שאר כל החניות בתרעומות ובמחלוקת"
: by all the oth-
: ביי אלע אנדע־
Evil qualities were the opposite of unity in both matters: "division" between <b>themselves</b> - opposite of "as one man"; and "complaints" regarding the matter of the Above - the opposite of "with one heart"
רע חניות איז געווען דער היפך האחדות אין ביידע ענינים: "מחלוקת" צווישן זיך - היפך פון "כאיש אחד"; און "תרעומות" בענין פון דעם אויבערשטן - דער היפך פון "בלב אחד"
(to the giving of the Torah)43.
(צו קבלת התורה) .
Tenth.
יו״ד.
The essence of the Torah in Rashi:
מיינה של תורה בפרש״י:
The world as it is in itself is a public domain44,
די וועלט ווי זי איז מצד עצמה איז א רשות הרבים ,
in which the connection and bond of one thing with another is not prominent45.
אין וועלכן עם איז ניט בולט די שייכות און פארבונד פון איין זאך מיט דער צווייטער .
And this is also expressed in the nature of the desert in particular and in general: The Most High created people in a manner that "no one of them is similar to his fellow"46,
און דאם זאגט זיך ארוים אויך אין דעם מין המדבר בפ״ע ובפרט: דער אוי־ בערשטער האט באשאפן די מענטשן אין אן אופן וואם "אין אחד מהם דומה לחבירו" ,
and in their opinions they are not equal22
און אין דעותיהם שוות
; and this also affects the actions of people,
; און דאם ווירקט אויך אויף די פעולות פון די מענטשן,
which are done according to the intellect and feeling of the person,
וועלכע ווערן געטאן לויטן שכל והרגש פון דעם מענטשן,
so that the actions of one person are not similar,
אז די פעולות פון איין מענטשן זיינען ניט בדומה,
and even to the point of opposition,
און ביז - אפילו אין קעגנזאץ,
to the actions of another person.
צו די פעולות פון א צווייטן מענטשן.
The concept of unity in the world is connected with the revelation of its Creator the One - Hashem the One,
דער ענין האחדות אין וועלט איז פארבונדן מיט דעם גילוי פון בוראו האחד - ה׳ אחד ,
His seeing is above the world.
רואם איז העכער פון וועלט.
And with this one can explain the difference between the Mechilta and Rashi:
און דערמיט קען מען מבאר זיין דעם חילוק צווישן דער מכילתא און פרש״י:
The revelation of Hashem the One in the world is brought about through two things which are higher than the world – Torah and Israel48,
דער גילוי פון ה׳ אחד אין וועלט טוט זיך אויף דורך צוויי זאכן וועלכע זיינען העכער פון וועלט - תורה און ישראל ,
and that because of them the world was created49.
און וואם צוליב זיי איז באשאפן געווארן די וועלט .
According to the Mechilta, the revelation of
לויט דער מכילתא האט דער גילוי פון
(the giving of)
(מתן)
Torah,
תורה,
which is higher than the world,
וואם איז העכער פון וועלט,
also affected the Jews even earlier – in the time of erev Matan Torah,
געפועלט אויך די אידן נאך פריער - אינעם זמן פון ערב מ״ת,
that already then,
אז שוין דעמאלט,
when they came into the desert Sinai,
ווען זיי זיינען געקומען אין מדבר םיני,
"they were all equal as one heart"50
"הושוו כולם לב אחד"
to receive the Torah51.
צו מקבל זיין די תורה .
But according to Rashi,
אבער לויט פרש״י,
the plain meaning of the verse,
פשוטו של מקרא,
since in actuality it was then the time of <b>before </b>the Giving of the Torah,
וויבאלד אז לפועל איז דאן געווען דער זמן פון פאר מ״ת,
one cannot
קען מען ניט
say that the revelation <b>in the future </b>had previously effected also for them the unity,
זאגן אז דער גילוי בעתיד האט פריער גע׳פועל׳ט אויך זיי די אחדות,
rather the unity came from the side of the Jews themselves52
נאר די אחדות איז געקומען מצד די אידן גופא
- from the aspect of the yechidah of the Jewish soul,
- מצד בחי׳ יחידה פון דער אידישער נשמה,
which is above reason and intellect
וואם איז העכער פאר טעם ודעת
(whose opinions are not equal).
(וואם דעותיהן אין שוות).
From the side of the point of Judaism which resides primarily
מצד די נקודת היהדות וואם איז שורה בעיקר
(not in the mind,
(ניט במוח,
rather)
נאר)
in the heart53
בלב
this caused and effected the "and Israel encamped there - <b>as one man</b>"55.
(וואם דאם איז נתגלה געווארן בא אידן ביציאתם ממצרים ),
And this itself,
און דאם גופא,
that they stood "as one person",
וואם זיי זיינען גע־ שטאנען "כאיש אחד",
from the aspect of the revelation of the point of Judaism,
מצד דעם גילוי פון נקודת היהדות,
awakened in them the will and desire for the receiving of the Torah - "with one heart".
האט ביי זיי דער־ וועקט דעם רצון ותשוקה צו קבלת התורה - "בלב אחד".
Yes.
יא.
Even though the true unity comes from the aspect of the point of Judaism,
אע״פ אז די אחדות אמיתית נעמט זיך מצד נקודת היהדות,
the yechidah of the soul,
יחידה שבנפש,
which the level exists only56
וואם די בחי׳ איז פאראן בלויז
among Jews57
ביי אידן
- nevertheless,
- פונדעםטוועגן,
since "God made this corresponding to that"58,
וויבאלד אז "את זה לעומת זה עשה האלקים" ,
there is at least a semblance of the matter of unity also found among non-Jews59
איז עכ״פ א מעין פון ענין האחדות אויך בנמצא ביי ניט אידן
(for the shell
(ווארום קליפה
Wants to resemble holiness like a monkey before a man60).
וויל זיך גלייכן צו קדושה כקוף בפני אדם ).
And with this it is understood,
און דערמיט איז מובן,
that also by the Egyptians61
וואם אויך ביי די מצרים
was the matter of "with one heart" which caused "as one man".
(בדוגמא צו דעם וואם איז געווען ביי די בנ״י)
The difference is, however,
דער חילוק איז אבער,
as above: by non-Jews, the manner of true unity from their own essence is not applicable
כנ״ל: ביי ניט־ אידן איז ניט שייך דער אופן פון התאחדות אמיתית מצד עצמם
("as one man")
("כאיש אחד")
and it is no more than a result and cause from the hatred "with one heart."
און ם׳איז ניט מער ווי א תוצאה ומםובב פון דער שנאה ״בלב אחד״.
But by Jews,
משא״כ ביי אידן,
that the point of Judaism is their true existence,
וואם נקודת היהדות איז זייער אמת׳ע מציאות,
through this a complete unity is opened — "as one man."
ווערט דורכדעם אויפגעטאן א התאחדות גמורה -"כאיש אחד".
12.
יב.
Although the true unity,
אע״פ אז די אחדות אמיתית,
which exists by Jews from the aspect of yechidah,
וואם איז דא ביי אידן מצד בחי׳ יחידה,
is not applicable by non-Jews — nevertheless,
איז ניט שייך ביי ניט־אידן - אעפ״כ,
since the giving of the Torah opened up,
וויבאלד אז מתן תורה האט אויפגעטאן,
as is known,
כידוע,
the nullification of the decree that had separated between "upper ones" and "lower ones"62
דעם ביטול הגזירה וואם האט מפםיק געווען צווישן "עליונים" און "תחתונים"
this opened up also for the Bnei Noach,
(צווישן אלקות און נבראים),
that also they should be able to perceive the G‑dly power that is clothed within them —
האט דאם אויפגעטאן אויך אויף די בני נח,
And through this that they hear the G‑dly power
און דורך דעם וואם זיי דערהערן דעם כח אלקי
(whose meaning is unity)
(וואם ענינו איז אחדות)
there is also opened up in them a certain matter of unity - similar to the unity of
ווערט אויך ביי זיי אויפגעטאן א געוויםער ענין פון אחדות - בדוגמא צו דער אחדות פון
Jews
אידן
(but not exactly,
(אבער ניט ממש,
because they are not capable of hearing
ווייל זיי זיינען ניט שייך צו דערהערן
(as it is by Jews)
(ווי דאם איז ביי אידן)
the aspect of G‑dliness that is entirely above worlds,
די בחינת אלקות וואם איז לגמרי העכער פון עולמות,
that specifically from that aspect in G‑dliness comes the true unity - "as one man").
וואם דוקא מצד דער בחינה אין אלקות ווערט די אמת׳ע אחדות - "כאיש אחד").
And the concept—that after the Giving of the Torah, even non-Jews have a connection to the aspect of G‑dliness etc. which is <b>higher</b> than intellect
און דער ענין - אז נאך מ״ת האבן אויך ניט־אידן א שייכות צו בחי׳ אלקות כו׳ וואם איז העכער פון שכל
(and from division)
(ומהתחלקות)
—is expressed in a <b>halachah</b>,
- דריקט זיך אוים אין א הלכה ,
that the fulfillment of the Seven Noahide Laws must be,
אז דער קיום פון שבע מצות בני נח דארף זיין,
<b>not</b> “because of intellectual compulsion”
ניט "מפני הכרע הדעת"
(and even not because of the command of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Adam the First and Noah),
(און אפילו ניט מצד דעם ציווי הקב״ה צו אדם הראשון ונח),
but—“because the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded them <b>in the Torah</b> and informed us through Moses our teacher that the children of Noah were previously commanded in them”63.
נאר - "מפני שצוה הקב״ה בהן בתורה והודיענו ע״י משה רבינו שבני נח מקודם נצטוו בהן" .
And since “each and every person is obligated to say: For my sake the world was created”46,
און וויבאלד אז "כל אחד ואחד חייב לומר בשבילי נברא העולם" ,
then for his sake the entire world was created
אז צוליב אים איז באשאפן געווארן די גאנצע וועלט
(from the category of the silent to the category of the speaker),
(פון דעם םוג הדומם ביז דעם םוג המדבר),
and he must make it a “private domain for His exclusive unity”44,
און ער דארף איר מאכן א "רשות היחיד ליחודו ית׳" ,
Therefore every Jew must endeavor to be as much as is dependent on him
דארף דעריבער יעדער איד זיך משתדל זיין ככל התלוי בו
(not only to disseminate Torah and Judaism among Jews,
(ניט נאר צו מפיץ זיין תורה ויהדות צווישן אידן,
but)
נאר)
to also effect upon the nations of the world that they should fulfill the seven commandments incumbent upon them64,
צו פועלן אויך אויף ב״נ אז זיי זאלן מקיים זיין די שבע מצות דידהו ,
and fulfill them — "because the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded them <b>in the Torah</b>".
און מקיים זיין זיי - "מפני שצוה בהן הקב״ה בתורה ".
