English translation 1
On the verse 1
אויפן פסוק
On the verse 1
אויפן פסוק
"Thus said the Lord, 'Around midnight I am going out into the midst of Egypt'",
"כה אמר ה׳ כחצות הלילה אני יוצא בתוך מצרים",
Rashi brings two explanations of "around midnight":
ברענגט רש״י צוויי פירושים אין "כחצות הלילה":
1.
א)
a)
א)
"Its plain meaning, to settle it on its tracks" is,
"פשוטו לישבו על אופניו" איז,
that the translation of "around midnight" is "as the division of the night" — when the night divides,
אז דער טייטש פון "כחצות הלילה" איז ״כהחלק הלילה״ - ווען די נאכט צע־ טיילט זיך,
which according to this explanation, "midnight" is not a noun of "half" — half the night,
וואס לויט דעם פירוש איז ״אין חצות שם דבר של חצי״ - האלבע נאכט,
rather it is a verb2
נאר ס׳איז א פעולה
(and Rashi brings for this several examples).
(און רש״י ברענגט דערויך כמה דוגמאות).
b)
ב)
"And our Rabbis expounded3
״ורבותינו דרשו
like "as at midnight"4
כמו כבחצות
of the night,
הלילה,
and they said that Moses said "as at midnight" which implies near it..
ואמרו שאמר משה כחצות דמשמע סמוך לו..
lest the astrologers of Pharaoh err and say 'Moses is a liar': "חצות" here is the "noun of half" — the middle of the night,
שמא יטעו אצטגניני פרעה ויאמרו משה בדאי הוא": "חצות" איז דא דער ״שם דבר של חצי״ - האלבע נאכט,
and that which Moses said "כַּחצות" — "near it",
און דאס וואס משה האט געזאגט ״ כ חצות״ - "סמוך לו",
and not "בַּחצות"
און ניט " ב חצות"
(exactly)
(בדיוק)
— is because he was concerned "lest they err etc. and say 'Moses is a liar'".
- איז ווייל ער האט חושש גע־ ווען "שמא יטעו כו׳ ויאמרו משה בדאי הוא".
And afterwards Rashi concludes
און דערנאך איז רש״י מסיים
(according to several versions5)
(לויט כמה גירסאות )
"but the Holy One, blessed be He, knows His times and moments, said 'at midnight'".
"אבל הקב״ה יודע עתיו ורגעיו אמר בחצות".
The Mizrachi learns
לערנט דער מזרחי
(and other commentators),
(און נאך מפרשים),
that the difficulty in the verse,
אז די שוועריקייט אין פסוק,
which Rashi comes to answer with the two explanations,
וואס רש״י קומט פארענטפערן מיט די צוויי פירושים,
is — in the manner of the question in the Gemara6
איז - ע״ד ווי די קשיא אין גמרא
— "Is there any doubt before Heaven?":
- "מי איכא ספיקא קמי׳ שמיא":
If one would say that "Chatzot" is "a noun of half",
אויב מען זאל זאגן אז "חצות" איז "שם דבר של חצי",
then it would follow that the "kaf" of "keChatzot" is a "kaf of estimation" like the examples which he brings: keAseret haYamim7,
דארך אויסקומען אז דער כ״ך פון "כחצות" איז א "כ״ף השיעור" נווי די דוגמאות וועלכע ער ברענגט: כעשרת הימים ,
keEfah Se'orim8],
כאיפה שעורים ],
that is,
דאס הייסט,
approximately,
אומגעפער,
about,
בערך,
around the time of Chatzot.
ארום דער צייט פון חצות.
Then it is,
הייסט עס דאך,
that "the matter is doubtful"9
אז ״הדבר מסופק״
(one does not know the exact time when this will occur)
(מען ווייס ניט דעם גענויעם זמן ווען דאס וועט פארקומען)
- and so one cannot say this regarding Above10.
- און אזוי קען מען דאך ניט זאגן כלפי מעלה .
Also this Rashi brings two explanations: a)
אויך דעם ברענגט רש״י צוויי פירושים: א)
"keChatzot halailah" means "keChelek halailah" as in an action the "kaf" means "when": "keChatzot halailah" - "when the night is divided"11,
"כחצות הלילה" מיינט "כהחלק הלילה" נוואס ביי א פעולה באדייט דער ״כ״ף״ - "כאשר": "כחצות הלילה" - ״כאשר יחלק הלילה״ ,
<b>exactly</b> at midnight],
פונקט אין האלבער נאכט],
it follows,
קומט אויס,
that in this there was no doubt.
אז ס׳איז אין דעם ניט געווען קיין ספק.
"keChatzot" means indeed "like keChatzot halailah ..
"כחצות" מיינט טאקע "כמו כבחצות הלילה ..
which implies near it",
דמשמע סמוך לו",
and <b>Moshe</b> said thus "lest they err etc.",
און משה האט אזוי געזאגט "שמא יטעו כו׳",
but the Almighty indeed said "beChatzot" - the exact time.
אבער דער אויבערשטער האט טאקע געזאגט ״בחצות״ - דעם גענויעם זמן.
b)
ב.
2.
ב.
One must, however, understand:
מען דארף אבער פארשטיין:
What is the necessity to say,
וואס איז דער הכרח צו זאגן,
that when the kaf of "keChatzot" is a kaf hashi'ur, it is "it must be that the thing is <b>doubtful</b>"9?
אז ווען דער כ״ף פון "כחצות" איז א כ״ף השיעור איז ״יחוייב שיהי׳ הדבר מסופק ״ ?
- One could, after all, assume,
- מען קען דאך אננעמען,
that he says "keChatzot"
אז ער זאגט "כחצות"
(kaf hashi'ur)
(כ׳ השיעור)
not because of a doubt in the matter,
ניט צוליב א ספק בדבר,
but because it will indeed occur "<b>close to</b> chatzot"12?
נאר ווייל דאס וועט טאקע פארקומען " סמוך לחצות" ?
And in particular,
ובפרט,
as the Levush asks: even when a person says in the language of "about" the measure,
ווי דער לבוש פרעגט: אפילו ווען א בן־אדם זאגט בלשון כ׳ השיעור,
it does not necessarily mean that it is for him a "doubtful thing"; it is only that "he did not care" to say the exact amount
מיינט עס ניט דוקא אז ס׳איז ביי אים א "דבר מסופק "; עס איז נאר וואס "לא חש" צו זאגן דעם גענויעם סכום
(with specific numbers,
(מיט מספרים פרטיים,
and therefore says near to a certain general number).
און זאגט דערפאר סמוך צו א מספר כללי מסוים).
The simple reason why one cannot say so is13,
דער טעם בפשטות פארוואס מ׳קען אזוי ניט זאגן איז ,
because it says further in the verse14
ווייל עס שטייט ווייטער אין פסוק
"And it was at midnight, and the Lord struck every firstborn, etc." - that the plague of the firstborn was exactly "at midnight",
"ויהי בחצי הלילה וה׳ הכה כל בכור גו׳״ - אז מכת בכורות איז געווען גענוי "בחצי הלילה",
and not "near midnight".
און ניט " סמוך לחצות".
It is however not plausible to say that this is the proof of <b>Rashi here</b>—because if the entire proof of Rashi is from the <b>later</b> verse "And it was at midnight,"
עס איז אבער ניט מסתבר צו זאגן אז דאס איז דער הכרח פון רש״י דא -ווארום אויב די גאנצע הוכחה פון רש״י איז פון שפעטערדיקן פסוק "ויהי בחצי הלילה״,
Rashi would have needed to bring down the verse in his commentary here
וואלט רש״י געדארפט אראפ־ ברענגען דעם פסוק בפירושו דא
that Rashi
אז רש״י
(in his commentary on the Torah)
(בפירושו על התורה)
does not rely on a verse that the five-year-old has not yet learned]
פארלאזט זיך ניט אויף א פסוק וואס דער בן־חמש האט נאך ניט געלערנט]
And in particular, that earlier on the verse
ובפרט אז פריער אויפן פסוק
(in the portion of Lech15)
(אין פ׳ לך )
"And he divided against them at night,"
"ויחלק עליהם לילה",
brings
ברענגט
Rashi brings down
רש״י אראפ
(from Midrash Aggadah16)
(פון מדרש אגדה )
"that the night was divided ..
"שנחלק הלילה ..
and its second half was guarded ..
וחציו השני נשמר ..
for the midnight of Egypt",
לחצות לילה של מצרים ",
that is,
דהיינו,
that the "midnight of Egypt" is not necessarily connected specifically with the moment of midnight,
אז דער "חצות לילה של מצרים" איז ניט פארבונדן דוקא מיטן רגע פון חצות לילה,
but with the "second half" in general17
נאר מיט׳ן "חציו השני" אין אלגעמיין
Then Rashi certainly should have brought down here the verse "Vayehi bachatsi halaylah etc."
האט דאך רש״י זיכער געדארפט אראפברענגען דא דעם פסוק "ויהי בחצי הלילה גו׳".
Since Rashi does not bring the verse,
וויבאלד אז רש״י ברענגט ניט דעם פסוק,
and writes
און שרייבט
(on the first explanation)
(אויפן ערשטן פירוש)
"This is its plain meaning to settle it on its course" — it implies,
״זהו פשוטו לישבו על אופניו״ - איז משמע,
that the "plain meaning" of <b>the verse </b>
אז "פשוטו" פון דעם פסוק
(<b>in itself</b>)
( מצד עצמו )
compels to interpret "kechelek halaylah".
איז מכריח צו טייטשן "כהחלק הלילה".
3.
ג.
Also one must understand:
אויך דארף מען פארשטיין:
a)
א)
In what way is the first explanation of Rashi more "peshuto" than the second explanation
מיט וואס איז דער ערשטער פירוש פון רש״י מער "פשוטו" ווי דער צווייטער פירוש
(which Rashi calls "derash")?
(וועלכן רש״י רופט אן "דרש")?
One cannot say,
מען קען ניט זאגן,
that according to its simple meaning "in ḥatzot there is no word of half"
אז לפי פשוטו איז "אין חצות שם דבר של חצי"
that "in ḥatzot there is no word of half" is a <b>giving of a reason</b> for "this is its simple meaning"]
אז "אין חצות שם דבר של חצי" איז א נתינת טעם אויף "זהו פשוטו״]
- because the word "ḥatzot" appears twice in the verse18,
- ווייל דער ווארט "חצות" שטייט צוויי מאל אין מקרא ,
and in
און אין
<b>both</b> places "ḥatzot is a word of half"19
ביידע ערטער איז "חצות שם דבר של חצי״
that with the phrase "this is its simple meaning ..
אז מיטן לשון ״זהו פשוטו ..
"that there is no 'chatzot' as a noun of 'half'" Rashi means: in order "to settle it in its proper way" according to <b>its simple meaning</b>,
שאין חצות שם דבר של חצי" מיינט רש״י: כדי "לישבו על אופניו" לויט פשוטו ,
one must
דארף מען
(<b>renew</b> and)
( מחדש זיין און)
say "that there is no chatzot
זאגן "שאין חצות
(<b>in our case</b>20)
( בנדו״ד )
a noun of 'half'"].
שם דבר של חצי"].
Now, since there where it says "chatzot" it is a "noun of 'half'" - why should one say,
היינט וויבאלד אז דארט וואו עם שטייט "חצות" איז עם א "שם דבר של חצי״ - פארוואם זאל מען זאגן,
that the "simple meaning" of "kechatzot" here is
אז דער "פשוטו" פון "כחצות" דא איז
(not a noun of 'half',
(ניט א שם דבר של חצי,
but)
נאר)
"like the portion of the night"
"כהחלק הלילה"
(which has no [parallel] in Scripture),
(וואם אין לו עד במקרא),
and the interpretation that this means "close to chatzot" is only a matter of "derash"21?
און דער פירוש אז דאם מיינט ״םמוך לחצות" איז נאר אן ענין של ״דרש״ ?
that Moshe said "ka'chatzot" in order to prevent "lest they err etc." - this is, however,
אז משה האט געזאגט "כחצות" כדי צו באווארענען ״שמא יטעו כו׳" - איז דאם אבער,
at first glance,
לכאורה,
irrelevant
אן ענין
(and concern)
(וחשש)
that has a place also according to the simple explanation22].
וואם האט אן ארט אויך לויט דרך הפשט ].
b)
ב)
What does Rashi mean
וואם מיינט רש״י
(in the second explanation)
(אין צווייטן פירוש)
"lest they err etc. and say Moshe <b>is a liar</b>" - why should Moshe assume the <b>concern</b> of <b>lest</b> with such certainty
"שמא יטעו כו׳ ויאמרו משה בדאי הוא ״ - פארוואם זאל משה אננעמען דעם חשש פון שמא מיט אזא זיכערקייט
(and consequently when all the firstborn
(ובמילא ווען אלע בכורות
will die all at once
וועלן בבת אחת שטארבן
(according to the calculation of Pharaoh's astrologers)
(לויטן חשבון פון אצטגניני פרעה)
"close to midnight" and not exactly at the moment of midnight,
״םמוך לחצות" און ניט גענוי אין דעם רגע פון חצות,
they will say that "Moses is a liar"23)
וועט מען זאגן אז "משה בדאי הוא" )
until changing the wording of the verse <b>at midnight</b> and saying <b>about midnight</b>?
ביז צו משנה זיין לשון השם בחצות און זאגן כחצות ?
c)
ג)
In the understanding of Rashi's commentary - "but the Holy One, blessed be He, knows His times and moments24
אין דעם םיום פון פירוש רש״י -״אבל הקב״ה יודע עתיו ורגעיו
said 'at midnight'" - it is not understood:
אמר בחצות״ - איז ניט מובן:
as discussed several times,
ווי גערעדט כמה פעמים,
even when Rashi brings Chazal's midrashim,
איז אפילו ווען רש״י ברענגט מדרשי חז״ל,
he only copies <b>the</b> matters that settle the words of the verse and have a place in the plain sense - one must understand in our case: although the matter was taken from "our Rabbis"25
איז ער נאר מעתיק די ענינים וואם זיינען מיישב דברי המקרא און האבן אן ארט ע״ד הפשט - דארף מען פארשטיין בנדו״ד: אע״פ אז דער ענין איז גענומען געווארן פון ״רבותינו״
- what is, however, the necessity in the plain sense to say that "the Holy One, blessed be He ..
- וואם איז אבער דער הכרח ע״ד הפשט צו זאגן אז ״הקב״ה ..
said 'at midnight'",
אמר בחצות",
and according to this one must say that Moses <b>changed</b> from the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He
וואם לפי זה דארף מען זאגן אז משה האט משנה געווען מדיבורו של הקב״ה
(as commentators elaborate on this)
(ווי מפרשים זיינען אין דעם מאריך)
- one can indeed learn,
- מען קען דאך לערנען,
that also the Almighty said to Moses
אז אויך דער אויבערשטער האט געזאגט משה׳ן
(to announce to Pharaoh)
(צו אנזאגן פרעה׳ן)
"<b>a</b>bout midnight",
" כ חצות",
due to that same reason itself: "lest they err etc."26?
מצד דעם זעלבן טעם גופא: "שמא יטעו כו׳" ?
why does Rashi copy from the verse also the word "the night" - seemingly,
פארוואם איז רש״י מעתיק פון פםוק אויך דעם ווארט ״הלילה״ -לכאורה,
both explanations are only regarding the word "about midnight"
זיינען ביידע פירושים נאר בנוגע דעם ווארט ״כחצות״
("like the half" or "like at midnight")?
(״כהחלק״ אדער "כמו כבחצות")?
d)
ד.
4.
ד.
This will be understood with an introduction of the precision in Rashi's language - "this is its simple meaning <b>to settle it on its tracks</b>",
וועט מען דאם פארשטיין בהקדם הדיוק אין לשון רש״י - "זהו פשוטו לישבו על אופניו ",
for seemingly this is superfluous language; Rashi should have said in his language as everywhere in his commentary "this is its simple meaning,
דלכאורה איז דאם א יתור לשון; רש״י האט געדארפט זאגן כלשונו בכ״מ בפירושו "זהו פשוטו,
and our Rabbis expounded etc.<b>/"</b>.
ורבותינו דרשו כו .
But with this Rashi indicates,
נאר דערמיט דייטעט רש״י אן,
that the difficulty in the words "around midnight"
אז די שוועריקייט אין די ווערטער "כחצות הלילה"
(which he cites)
(וועלכע ער איז מעתיק)
is
איז
(not from the aspect of the explanation of the word "around midnight",
(ניט מצד דעם פירוש פון ווארט "כחצות",
and even not because of the reason that it does not allow itself to be <b>translated</b> thus regarding Above,
און אפילו ניט צוליבן טעם וואם עם לאזט זיך אזוי ניט טייטשן כלפי מעלה,
but)
נאר)
from the aspect of the <b>content</b> of the matter in the verse: the "simple meaning" must be such an explanation that settles the verse "on its tracks" - that the words "around midnight" should fit into the totality of the content of the matter in the verse.
מצד דעם תוכן הענין שבהמקרא: דער "פשוטו" דארף זיין אזא פירוש וואם זאל מיישב זיין דעם מקרא "על אופניו״ - אז די ווערטער "כחצות הלילה״ זאלן אריינפאםן אין כללות תוכן הענין שבהמקרא.
The explanation in this:
דער ביאור אין דעם:
Learning the verse "Thus said the Lord,
לערנענדיק דעם פםוק ״כה אמר ה",
about midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt" immediately a simple question arises: what is the practical difference to say that this
כחצות הלילה אני יוצא בתוך מצרים" שטעלט זיך גלייך א שאלה פשוטה: למאי נפק״מ צו אנזאגן אז דאם
("I will go out")
("אני יוצא")
will take place "about midnight"?
וועט פארקומען "כחצות הלילה"?
One cannot say,
מען קען ניט זאגן,
that with this the Most High
אז דערמיט האט דער אויבערשטער
(סתם)
(םתם)
wanted to inform Pharaoh of the <b>time</b> of the plague - because by most of the plagues the Most High did not determine the exact time when the plague would occur -
געוואלט מודיע זיין פרעה/ן דעם זמן פון דער מכה - ווייל ביי רוב המכות האט דער אויבערשטער ניט באשטימט דעם גענויעם זמן ווען די מכה וועט פארקומען -
Even by "Dever,"
אפילו ביי ״דבר״,
"Barad" and "Arbeh"27
״ברד״ און ״ארבה״
- by "Dever"28
- איז ביי ״דבר״
and "Arbeh"29
און ״ארבה״
the Most High had fixed the
האט דער אויבערשטער קובע געווען דעם
<b>The day </b>"tomorrow" and not the hour in the day30
טאג "מחר" און ניט די שעה אין טאג
; and by "barad"
; און ביי "ברד"
(where the Almighty said "<b>at this time </b>tomorrow"31,
(וואו דער אויבערשטער האט געזאגט " כעת מחר" ,
and according to Rashi's explanation: "at this very hour tomorrow,
וכפירוש רש״י: "כעת הזאת למחר,
he drew a line on the wall etc./")
שרט לו שריטה בכותל כו/״)
- there is a special reason why this was necessary32
- איז דא א טעם מיוחד פארוואם דאם איז געווען נויטיק
-in order to ensure that the one who "fears the word of the L-rd"33
-בכדי צו באווארענען אז דער "ירא את דבר ה/״
should know the time in order to be able to save "his servants" and "his livestock" from the plague - unlike in our case.
זאל וויםן דעם זמן כדי צו קענען ראטעווען "עבדיו" און "מקנהו" פון דער מכה - משא״כ בנדו״ד.
but only that it would occur "at about midnight" - Pharaoh could therefore not know with <b>certainty </b>the time of the plague34
נאר בלויז אז ם/וועט פארקומען ״כחצות הלילה״ - קען דאך פרעה םיי ווי ניט וויםן מיט א זיכערקייט דעם זמן פון דער מכה
One must say,
מוז מען זאגן,
that the intention in saying "at midnight" is not to announce the fixed time of the plague,
אז די כוונה אינעם זאגן "כחצות הלילה" איז ניט צו מודיע זיין דעם זמן קבוע פון דער מכה,
rather this is a special matter in the manner and quality of the plague: "at midnight" shows and emphasizes and reveals that "<b>I</b> will go out",
נאר דאם איז אן ענין מיוחד אין אופן ואיכות המכה: "כחצות הלילה" ווייזט און איז מדגיש ומגלה אז " אני יוצא",
the <b>Almighty</b> Himself goes out and brings the plague
דער אויבערשטער בעצמו איז יוצא און ברענגט די מכה
(in the manner that it is written
(ע״ד ווי עם שטייט
Earlier35
פריער
"so that you will know that there is none like the L-rd our G-d").
"למען תדע כי אין כה׳ אלקינו").
This, however, requires explanation: in what does the special superiority consist in the time "around midnight of the night"?
דאס איז אבער דורש ביאור: אין וואס באשטייט דער עילוי מיוחד אין דעם זמן " כ חצות הלילה"
(around midnight),
( ארום חצות),
that this brings out the wonder of "I will go out"?
אז דאס ברענגט ארויס די הפלאה פון "אני יוצא"?
And on the contrary: after Pharaoh saw at the plague of hail that it came at the exact time,
ואדרבה : נאך דעם ווי פרעה האט גע־ זען ביי מכת ברד אז זי איז געקומען אין דעם פינקטלעכן זמן,
at the moment that the One Above had said in advance: "At this time tomorrow ..
אין דעם רגע וואס דער אויבערשטער האט פאראויס געזאגט: ״ כעת מחר ..
when the sun reaches here the hail will fall"
כשתגיע חמה לכאן ירד הברד״
- would on the contrary weaken the "faith" in Moshe's saying that "I will go out" will take place "around midnight of the night"
- וועט אדרבא - אפ־ שוואכן די "נאמנות" פון משה׳ן זיין זאגן אז "אני יוצא" וועט פארקומען " כ חצות הלילה"
(approximately,
( לערך,
close to midnight)?
סמוך לחצות)?
5.
ה.
Therefore Rashi explains,
דעריבער איז רש״י מפרש,
that "as midnight" means "<b>as the part </b>of the night",
אז "כחצות הלילה" מיינט " כהחלק הלילה",
according to which explanation indeed the exactness of the specific time is brought out in the most precise manner
וואס לויט דעם פירוש ווערט טאקע ארויסגעבראכט די פינקטלעכקייט פון באשטימטן זמן באופן הכי מדויק
(even more than by "as tomorrow"37)
(נאך מער ווי ביי "כעת מחר" )
The difference between the two ways of expressing the time of "half the night" - "midnight" or "as the part of the night" - is:
דער חילוק צווישן די צוויי אופנים ווי צו אויסדריקן דעם זמן פון "חצי הלילה" - "חצות הלילה" אדער "כהחלק הלילה" - איז:
"Chatzot halailah" speaks about <b>time </b>
"חצות הלילה" רעדט וועגן זמן
(specific)
(מסוים)
; "Kechetz halailah" - when the duration of the night <b>di‑ vides </b>itself into two - describes
; "כהחלק הלילה״ - ווען משך הלילה צע־ טיילט זיך אויף צווייען - איז מתאר
(not time,
(ניט זמן,
but)
נאר)
an action.
א פעולה.
And with the addition that this ac‑ tion does not occur in a <b>continuum </b>of time,
ובהוספה אז די דאזי־ קע פעולה טוט זיך אויף ניט אין א המשך זמן,
but in a <b>point </b>of "time".
נאר אין א נקודה פון "זמן".
The point that divides the two halves of the night is not a <b>duration </b>
די נקודה וואס צעטיילט די צוויי חצאי הלילה איז ניט קיין שהות
(continuum)
(המשך)
of time that can be measured
זמן וואס מען קען עס מעסטן
(if it can be measured - it would also need to be divided - half to the first half of the night,
(אויב מען קען עס מעסטן - דארף זי אויך נתחלק ווערן - האלב צו דעם ערשטן חצי הלילה,
and the second half - to the second).
און די צווייטע האלב - צו דעם צווייטען).
And this is the meaning of "<b>around midnight </b>I will go out etc." - the Supreme One will "go out" precisely at the <b>point </b>of "as the division of the night"38
און דאס איז דער אויפטו פון " כחצות הלילה אני יוצא גו׳״ - דער אויבער־ שטער וועט "ארויסגיין" פונקט אין דער נקודה פון ״כהחלק לילה״
For He is "knower of its times and its moments."
ווארעם ער איז "יודע עתיו ורגעיו".
6.
ו.
It is, however, not understood: Why does one say <b>around midnight </b>which has <b>two </b>meanings,
עס איז אבער ניט מובן: פארוואס זאגט מען כחצות וואס האט צוויי טייטשן,
<b>And on the contrary</b>: the simple meaning here must come to proofs
ואדרבה : דער פשט דא דארף אנקומען צו ראיות
(and one is not enough)
(און איינע איז ניט גענוג)
and the proofs are not entirely similar to our case39,
און די ראיות זיינען ניט אינגאנצן גלייך צו נדו״ד ,
for both speak about a starting point which afterwards had a continuation, a <b>duration </b>of time
ווארעם ביידע ריידן וועגן א נקודת ההתחלה וואס האט דערנאך געהאט א המשך א משך זמן
(out of a point),
(אויס נקודה),
but here it remained a point <b>literally </b>as above - when he could have said <b>in the plainest sense </b>at midnight with a <b>bet</b>40
משא״כ דא איז געבליבן א נקודה ממש כנ״ל - בשעת ער האט געקאנט זאגן בפשטות ממש בחצות מיט א בית
! - therefore Rashi must come to a second interpretation,
! - דערפאר מוז רש״י אנקומען צו א צווייטן פירוש,
although it is not smooth according to the <b>simple meaning </b>
כאטש ער איז ניט גלאטיק ע״ד הפשט
(but not - the homiletical meaning)

כ חצות.
But also according to the explanation of our Rabbis is - "The Holy One, blessed be He, knows its times and its moments
אבער אויך לויט דעם פירוש פון רבותינו איז - "הקב״ה יודע עתיו ורגעיו
(and consequently, is there any doubt before Heaven?)

and this emphasizes the

"<b>I </b>will go out" - in the land of Egypt,
״ אני יוצא״ - בארץ מצרים,
after the millstones etc.
אחר הרחיים וגו׳
as above section 4 at length].
כנ״ל ס״ד באורך].
"Rabboseinu" also claims,
"רבותינו" טוען אויך,
that when it came to conveying the words of Hashem to <b>Pharaoh</b>,
אז ווען עס איז געקומען צום איבערגעבן דברי ה׳ אל פרעה ,
Moshe changed [it] due to the concern "lest they err etc."
האט משה משנה געווען מצד דעם חשש "שמא יטעו כו׳"
(and certainly this itself was the will of Hashem41).
(און זיכער איז דאס גופא געווען רצון ה׳ ).
And for this reason this is only a matter of "derash",
ומהאי טעמא איז דאס בלויז אן ענין של "דרש",
because in the <b>plain meaning</b> of the verse it does not state about two <b>separate</b> utterances
ווייל אין פשט המקרא שטייט ניט וועגן צוויי באזונדערע אמירות
said 'at midnight'",
אמר בחצות",
and Moshe — "about midnight"],
און משה - "כחצות"],
this is only a matter of "derash".
דאס איז בלויז אן ענין של "דרש".

Moreover: seemingly there is a difficulty - what does the first explanation answer at all: since "like the division of the night" is a <b>point</b> in time,
יתרה מזה: לכאורה איז דא א קשיא - וואס פרעגט אינגאנצן אפ דעם ערשטן פירוש: וויבאלד אז "כהחלק הלילה" איז א נקודת זמן,
which only the Most High can pinpoint,
וואס נאר דער אויבער־ שטער קען עס מכוון זיין,
and a person cannot discern it - then what will be accomplished by informing Pharaoh and his magicians and all Egypt about it,
און א מענטש קען דאס ניט מבחין זיין - איז וואס וועט צוקומען דורך מודיע זיין פרעה׳ן און זיינע חרטומים און כל מצרים וועגן דעם,
when <b>he</b> and all of them will not be able to pinpoint it anyway - whether it occurred exactly at the point when the night is divided or not42.
בשעת אז ער און זיי אלע וועלן עס סיי ווי ניט קענען מכוון זיין - צי דאס האט געטראפן פונקט אין דער נקודה ווען דער לילה איז נחלק אדער ניט .
- This is answered by Rashi's bringing
- דאס ווערט פארענטפערט דורך רש״י׳ס בריינגען
(lengthiness)
(אריכות)
of the midrash
ל׳ המדרש
(reminding people about whom one had not spoken at all -)
(דערמאנען מענטשן וועגן וועמען מ׳האט אינגאנצן ניט גערעדט -)
- <b>I will not</b> [go in] to Pharaoh,
- אי־ צטגניני פרעה,
Not Pharaoh and his servants <b>etc.</b>
ניט פרעה ועבדיו וכיו״ב .
- as explained
- ווי מפורש
In the verse that Moses spoke to Pharaoh and the magicians who were at their speaking in order to demonstrate <b>with their enchantments</b> at the time of the deed that they too can do it and also "all these your servants"43,
בכתוב אז משה האט גערעדט צו פרעה והחרטומים וועלכע זיינען געווען בא זייער רעדן כדי צו באווייזן בלהטיהם בשעת מעשה אז זיי קענען עס אויך טאן און אויך "כל עבדיך אלה" ,
The aforementioned that it does not come about through saying the point-in-time because one cannot intend the moment, this is regarding <b>Pharaoh and all Egypt</b>,
דאס אויבנדערמאנטע אז עס קומט ניט צו דורך זאגן נקודת הזמן ווייל מען קען ניט מכוון זיין את הרגע איז דאס בנוגע פרעה וכל מצרים ,
With <b>one exception</b>: <b>Pharaoh's astrologers</b> — seers of constellations and stars who see <b>in general</b> the truth44
מיט איין אויסנאם : אצטגניני פרעה - חוזים במזלות וכוכבים וועלכע זעען בכלל דעם אמת
And Pharaoh reckoned with them and acted according to their instructions45
און פרעה האט זיך מיט זיי גערעכנט און געטאן לויט זייערע אנווייזונגען
And in general they discerned knowledge of the moment of God's action46,
און בכלל האבן זיי מבחין געווען וויסן את הרגע פון פעולת השם ,
There was only the concern <b>lest they err</b>.
ס׳איז נאר געווען דער חשש שמא יטעו .

And one must say,
ויש לומר,
Then with the phrase "But the Holy One, blessed be He, <b>knows its times and its moments</b> said at midnight",
אז מיט דעם לשון "אבל הקב״ה יודע עתיו ורגעיו אמר בחצות",
Rashi intends to allude to his <b>previous</b> commentary:
מיינט רש״י צו מרמז זיין אויף זיינעם א פריערדיקן פירוש:
On "And God finished on the seventh day"47
אויף ״ויכל אלקים ביום השביעי״
Rashi brings down the statement of Rabbi Shimon "The Holy One, blessed be He, <b>who knows its times and its moments</b> entered into it <b>like a hair's breadth</b>".
ברענגט רש״י אראפ מאמר ר׳ שמעון "הקב״ה שיודע עתיו ורגעיו נכנס בו כחוט השערה ".
The plain meaning of this is: a human being can be precise — at least with great effort — even in a moment; but also a moment has a measure — "one of five etc. moments as they say"48,
דער פשט דערפון איז: א בשר ודם קען מדייק זיין - עכ״פ ביגיעה גדולה - אפילו אין א רגע; אבער אויך א רגע האט א שיעור - "אחד מחמשת כו׳ רגע כמימרי׳" ,
to pronounce <b>three</b> letters.
ארויסריידן דריי אותיות.
But a "hair's breadth",
אבער א "חוט השערה",
a hair,
א האר,
means the smallest point of time that is
מיינט די קלענסטע נקודה פון זמן וואס איז
Generally not within the category of a human being to be able to distribute it and grasp it — even astrologers and Balaam49
איבערהויפט ניט אין גדר פון א בשר ודם צו קענען זי אויסטיילן און תופס זיין -אפילו אצטגנינין ובלעם
who can discern the <b>moment</b> of <b>the act of God</b>50,
וועלכע קענען מבחין זיין די רגע פון פעולת השם ,
but specifically the One Above who knows "His <b>times</b> and moments" can discern it.
נאר דוקא דער אויבערשטער וואס איז "יודע עתיו ורגעיו" קען דאס מבחין זיין.
And this Rashi indicates in our portion by saying "but the Holy One, blessed be He, knows His times and moments, said 'at midnight'":
און דאס דייטעט אן רש״י בפרשתנו מיטן זאגן "אבל הקב״ה יודע עתיו ורגעיו אמר בחצות":
By "בחצות" is meant not simply the moment of חצות that even a human being can intend
מיט "בחצות" ווערט געמיינט ניט סתם די רגע פון חצות וואס אויך א בן אדם קען מכוון זיין
(at least with great effort,
(עכ״פ בטורח גדול,
and in the language of the ראב"ע51
ובלשון הראב״ע
: "with great effort in large copper vessels"),
: "בטורח גדול בכלים גדולים של נחושת"),
rather this is the "חוט השערה" of חצות52,
נאר דאס איז דער " חוט השערה " פון חצות ,
which can be intended only by "הקב"ה
וואס דאס קען מכוון זיין נאר "הקב״ה
(Who is)
(וואס ער איז)
יודע עתיו ורגעיו".
יודע עתיו ורגעיו".
