At the conclusion of the series1
בסיום הסדרה
Rashi stands on “
שטעלט זיך רש”י אויף „
(Also the sons of Machir etc. were born)
(גם בני מכיר גו׳ יולדו)
on Joseph’s knees” and explains: “As the Targum,
על ברכי יוסף” און איז מפרש: „כתרגומו,
they were raised between his knees.”
גדלן בין ברכיו”.
Simply, one learns,
בפשטות לערנט מען,
that by Rashi the wording “were born on Joseph’s knees” is difficult — how can one say that “the sons of Machir” were <b>born</b> “on Joseph’s knees”?
אַז ביי רש”י׳ן איז שווער דער לשון „יולדו על ברכי יוסף" — ווי קען מען זאָגן אַז „בני מכיר” זיינען געבוירן געוואָרן „על ברכי יוסף”?
Therefore Rashi explains,
דעריבער איז רש"י מפרש,
that the intention of the verse is
אַז כוונת הפסוק איז
(not that they were born “on Joseph’s knees”,
(ניט אַז זיי זיינען געבוירן געוואָרן „על ברכי יוסף”,
but)
נאָר)
that — “they were <b>raised</b> between his knees.”
אַז — „ גדלן בין ברכיו”.
One must however understand: this itself
מען דאַרף אָבער פאַרשטיין: דאָס גופא
(that the verse means "his greatness etc.")
(אַז דער פסוק מיינט „גדלן כו׳”)
can be learned in two ways:
קען מען לערנען אויף צוויי אופנים:
a)
א)
as the Ibn Ezra teaches,
ווי דער אבן עזרא לערנט,
that the meaning of "yoldu" <b>here</b> is — "his greatness".
אַז דער טייטש פון „יולדו" דאָ איז — „גודלו”.
b)
ב)
as the Targum says on "yuldu al birchei Yosef" — "itilidu verabi Yosef",
ווי דער תרגום זאָגט אויף „יולדו על ברכי יוסף" — „ אתילידו ורבי יוסף”,
from which it is understood2,
וואָס פון דעם איז מובן ,
that "verabi Yosef" is related and is the translation
אַז „ ורבי יוסף” איז שייך און איז דער אָפּטייטש
(not of "yuldu",
(ניט פון „יולדו”,
but)
נאָר)
of "al birchei Yosef"3
פון „ על ברכי יוסף”
and like a concise verse
וכמו מקרא קצר
(and afterwards)
(און דערנאָך)
vayihyu al birchei
ויהיו על ברכי
("verabi")
(„ורבי”)
Yosef"
יוסף”
(— he raised them)].
(— ער האָט זיי מגדל געווען)].
and Rashi assumes
און רש”י נעמט אָן
(not like the Ibn Ezra4,
(ניט ווי דער אבן עזרא ,
but as he says explicitly)
נאָר ווי ער זאָגט בפירוש)
"KeTargumo" — and therefore
„כתרגומו” — און דערפאַר
(a)
(א)
he does <b>not</b> copy in the opening discourse the word "Yuladu"
איז ער ניט מעתיק אין דעם דבור־המתחיל דעם וואָרט „יולדו"
(because he only explains the words "al birchei Yosef")
(ווייל ער איז נאָר מפרש די ווערטער „על ברכי יוסף”)
(b)
(ב)
he says "Gedlan"
ער זאָגט „גדלן"
(not "Gudlu" — which corresponds to "Yuladu")
(ניט „גודלו" — וואָס איז מתאים צו „יולדו")
is perplexing: why does Rashi teach "KeTargumo"
איז תמוה: פאַרוואָס לערנט רש”י „כתרגומו”
(which, according to this, one must strain that the verse is as if it is a "Mikra Katar"),
(וואָס לפ”ז מוז מען דוחק זיין אַז דער פסוק איז כאילו ווי אַ „מקרא קצר”),
and does not teach that "Yuladu" here means "Gudlu"?
און לערנט ניט אַז „יולדו” דאָ מיינט „גודלו”?
And one cannot answer,
און מ׳קען ניט ענטפערן,
that according to the plain meaning it is difficult to learn that "yoldu" means "gidlu" — because we find that Rashi himself
אַז ע”ד הפשט איז שווער צו לערנען אַז „יולדו" מיינט „גודלו" — ווייל מ׳געפינט אַז רש"י אַליין
(in parshas Bamidbar5)
(אין פ׳ במדבר )
explains "V'eileh toldos Aharon u'Moshe" — "and the offspring of Moshe are called because he taught them Torah ...
איז מפרש „ואלה תולדות אהרן ומשה” — „ונקראו תולדות משה לפי שלמדן תורה ..
whoever teaches his friend's son Torah, Scripture considers it as if he gave birth to him";
שכל המלמד את בן חברו תורה מעלה עליו הכתוב כאילו ילדו”;
one sees,
זעט מען,
that
אַז
(also)
(אויך)
according to the plain meaning "leidah" can mean "taught him Torah"
ע”ד הפשט קען „לידה” מיינען „למדן תורה”
(birth in spirituality),
(לידה ברוחניות),
and all the more so in our case that he <b>raised </b>them6
ועאכו"כ בנדו"ד אַז ער האָט זיי מגדל געווען
(not only regarding Torah,
(ניט נאָר בנוגע תורה,
one detail,
איין פרט,
but)
נאָר)
in all details of raising children.
אין אַלע פרטים פון גידול בנים.

ב.
The explanation in this:
דער ביאור בזה:
In parshas Vayeitzei7
אין פ׳ ויצא
it says "And she said
שטייט „ותאמר
(Rachel)
(רחל)
etc. come to me
גו׳ בא אלי׳
(Bilhah)
(בלהה)
and she gave birth on my knees".
ותלד על ברכי”.
Rashi translates: "on my knees — as its Targum: and I will raise"; there one cannot learn that the translation of "and she gave birth" is
טייטשט רש"י: „על ברכי — כתרגומו ואנא ארבי”; וואָס דאָרטן קען מען ניט לערנען אַז דער טייטש פון „ותלד” איז
(And I will build)
(ואנא)
“I will be built” — because the word “ותלד”
ארבי” — ווייל דער וואָרט „ותלד”
(she will give birth)
( זי וועט געבוירן)
can certainly not refer to Rachel.
קען זיך דאָך ניט באַציען צו רחל.
One must say,
מוז מען זאָגן,
that the concept of “And I will be built” is in the words “על ברכי” by itself; i.e.
אַז דער ענין פון „ואנא ארבי” איז אין די ווערטער „על ברכי” פאַר זיך ; ד.
that
ה.
“ותלד” means birth literally
„ותלד” מיינט לידה כפשוטה
(as the Targum indeed translates there “ותלד — ותליד”)
(ווי דער תרגום טייטשט טאַקע דאָרט „ותלד — ותליד")
— Bilhah will give birth to a child that will be “על ברכי”
— בלהה וועט געבוירן אַ קינד וואָס וועט זיין „על ברכי”
(“I will be built”).
(„אנא ארבי”).
And since in our parshah there is a similar expression — "
און וויבאַלד אַז בפרשתנו שטייט אַן ענלעכער לשון — „
(were born)
(יולדו)
upon [Joseph's] knees",
על ברכי”,
there is no place to say,
האָט ניט קיין אָרט צו זאָגן,
that <b>here</b> should "and [Joseph]
אַז דאָ זאָל „ורבי
(Joseph)
(יוסף)
" be the interpretation
” זיין דער טייטש
(not of "upon [Joseph's] knees
(ניט פון „על ברכי
(Joseph)
(יוסף)
" alone,
” אַליין,
but)
נאָר)
of the word "were born".
פון וואָרט „יולדו”.
Therefore Rashi says,
דערפאַר זאָגט רש”י,
that here
אַז דאָ
(as in parshas Vayeitzei)
(ווי אין פ׳ ויצא)
the interpretation of "were born" is <b>literally</b>,
איז דער טייטש פון „יולדו” כפשוטו ,
and "upon Joseph's knees" is — "according to its Targum".
און „על ברכי יוסף” איז — „כתרגומו”.
3.
ג.
One must, however, understand the lengthiness in Rashi's language in his commentary here:
מ׳דאַרף אָבער פאַרשטיין די אריכות בלשון רש”י בפירושו דאָ:
a)
א)
Rashi's way8
דרכו של רש”י
in every place is,
בכ”מ איז,
that when he says "like its Targum,"
אַז ווען ער זאָגט „כתרגומו”,
he is satisfied with that and relies that one will look up the Targum on one's own; and even when he also copies the language of the Targum,
באַנוגנט ער זיך דערמיט און פאַרלאָזט זיך אַז מ׳וועט אַליין נאָכקוקן אין תרגום; און אפילו ווען ער איז אויך מעתיק דעם לשון התרגום,
he
איז ער
(generally)
(בדרך כלל)
does not explain the Targum
ניט מפרש דעם תרגום
(and as we see in his commentary above on "upon the knees" in parshas Vayeitzei where he says "like its Targum, and I raised")
(און ווי מ׳זעט עס בפירושו הנ”ל אויף „על ברכי” אין פ׳ ויצא וואו ער זאָגט „כתרגומו ואנא ארבי”)
It is not understood: why does Rashi here in our parshah need to interpret the translation of Targum in the Holy Language — "Gedlan etc."?
איז ניט מובן: פאַרוואָס דאַרף רש”י דאָ בפרשתנו אָפּטייטשן דעם פירוש התרגום אין לשון הקודש — „גדלן כו’”?
Furthermore: if the interpretation of Targum requires an explanation in the Holy Language — should Rashi have done it earlier in Parshas Vayeitzei9?
ועוד: אויב פירוש התרגום פאָדערט אַן אָפּטייטש אין לשון הקודש — האָט עס רש”י געדאַרפט טאָן פריער אין פ׳ ויצא ?
b)
ב)
Even if one finds an explanation why Rashi needs to interpret the word "V'Rabbi"
אפילו מ׳זאָל געפינען אַ הסברה פאַרוואָס רש”י דאַרף אָפּטייטשן דעם וואָרט „ורבי”
("Gadlan")
(„גדלן”)
— it is not understood: why does he need to copy — add the words "between his knees"?
— איז ניט מובן: צוליב וואָס דאַרף ער דערצו מעתיק זיין — צוגעבן די ווערטער „בין ברכיו”?
c)
ג)
The difficulty in this is even stronger: the addition of "between his knees" is seemingly in contradiction to "Targumo":
די תמי׳ אין דעם איז נאָך שטאַרקער: די הוספה פון „בין ברכיו" איז לכאורה אין סתירה צו „תרגומו”:
When interpreting "on the knees of Yosef" the Targum does not say "and Yosef upon my riders"
ביים אָפּטייטשן „על ברכי יוסף” זאָגט ניט דער תרגום „ורבי יוסף על רכובי ”
(and the like).
(וכיו”ב).
From this it is understood,
דערפון איז משמע ,
that according to the Targum the explanation of "on the knees" is not literally in a physical sense,
אַז לויטן תרגום איז דער פירוש פון „על ברכי” ניט כפשוטו במובן גשמי,
rather this is an expression that means that he raised them —
נאָר דאָס איז אַן אויסדרוק וואָס באַדייט אַז ער האָט זיי מגדל געווען —
It comes out,
קומט אויס,
that by adding the words "between his knees" — which the addition
אַז מיט צולייגן די ווערטער „בין ברכיו” — וואָס די הוספה
(in the language of the Targum)
(אויפן לשון התרגום)
emphasizes that the "raiser" was "between his knees" is in Rashi according to his method,
איז מדגיש אַז דער „גדלן” איז געווען „בין ברכיו” איז בפרש"י כשיטתו,
literally — not "like his Targum"
כפשוטו — ניט „כתרגומו”
At first glance one could answer,
לכאורה וואָלט מען געקענט ענטפערן,
that this itself is Rashi’s intention to protect — that also according to “his Targum” the meaning of “upon the knees of Yosef” <b>literally</b> and in accordance with “and Rabbi”,
אַז דאָס גופא איז רש”י אויסן צו באַוואָרענען — אַז אויך לויט „תרגומו” איז דער טייטש פון „על ברכי יוסף” כפשוטו ובהתאם צו „ורבי”,
because when one raises a child one often holds him “upon his knees”
וואָרום בשעת מ׳איז מגדל אַ קינד האַלט מען אים אָפטערס „על ברכיו”
(as one sees tangibly).
(ווי מ׳זעט במוחש).
With this would also be justified what Rashi <b>changes</b> from the language of the verse “<b>upon</b> the knees of Yosef”,
דערמיט וואָלט אויך געוואָרן רעכט וואָס רש”י איז משנה פון לשון הכתוב „ על ברכי יוסף”,
and says “<b>between</b> his knees”13
און זאָגט „ בין ברכיו”
— because raising a child includes not only the age when one holds him “upon his knees”,
— ווייל מגדל זיין אַ קינד נעמט אַריין ניט נאָר דעם גיל ווען ער האַלט אים „על ברכיו”,
but also later and for a longer period when he is “between his knees”.
נאָר אויך שפּעטער און אַ מער לענגערע צייט ווען ער איז „בין ברכיו”.
It remains, however, not understood,
עס בלייבט אָבער ניט פאַרשטאַנדיק,
as above: if Rashi needs to safeguard,
כנ”ל: אויב רש”י דאַרף באַוואָרענען,
that
אַז
(a)
(א)
also according to his Targum one must interpret "al birkhav" <b>physically</b>,
אויך לויט תרגומו דאַרף מען טייטשן „על ברכיו” בגשמיות ,
and
און
(b)
(ב)
that "al" here means "between" — Rashi should have done this <b>earlier</b>,
אַז „על” דאָ מיינט „בין” — האָט עס רש”י געדאַרפט טאָן פריער ,
in parshas Vayeitzei,
אין פ׳ ויצא,
and not only here in parshas Vayechi.
און ניט ערשט דאָ אין פ׳ ויחי.
d.
ד.
The explanation in this:
דער ביאור בזה:
By adding the words "raised upon his knees" Rashi wants to negate the interpretation of Targum Yonatan "when they were born they were circumcised by Yosef",
מיט צוגעבן די ווערטער „גדלן בין ברכיו” וויל רש”י שולל זייז דעם פירוש פון תרגום יונתן „כד אתילידו גזירינון יוסף”,
(according to the interpretation14)
(לויטן אָפּטייטש )
that their circumcision was upon the knees of Yosef
אַז זייער ברית מילה איז געווען על ברכי יוסף
(he was their sandek)
(ער איז געווען זייער סנדק)
— at first glance this interpretation has a place
— דלכאורה האָט דער פירוש אַן אָרט
(also)
(אויך)
according to the plain meaning,
ע”ד הפשט,
because:
ווייל:
a)
א)
According to this, the words "upon the knees of Yosef" are interpreted in their most literal sense — he held them upon his knees.
לפ”ז ווערן די ווערטער „על ברכי יוסף” געטייטשט כפשוטם ממש — ער האָט זיי געהאַלטן על ברכיו.
b)
ב)
also the word “yuladu” is smoother according to <b>the </b>interpretation.
אויך דער וואָרט „יולדו” איז גלאַטיקער לויט דעם פירוש.
According to Targum Onkelos one can ask: how does it fit to mention here the matter of birth
לויטן תרגום אונקלוס קען מען פרעגן: ווי פּאַסט צו דערמאָנען דאָ ענין הלידה
(“itilidu”)
(„אתילידו”)
— here it is only relevant that Joseph had <b>raised </b>them
— דאָ איז בלויז נוגע אַז יוסף האָט זיי מגדל געווען
where there it does not say that Joseph “saw” that they were <b>born </b>“to Ephraim, sons of thirty”,
וואָס דאָרט שטייט ניט אַז יוסף האָט „געזען” ווי עס זיינען געבוירן געוואָרן „לאפרים בני שלשים”,
but simply that he saw them].
נאָר סתם אַז ער האָט זיי געזען].
However according to Targum Yonatan,
משא”כ לויטן תרגום יונתן,
where “upon the knees of Joseph” speaks about the time of the covenant,
וואָס „על ברכי יוסף” רעדט וועגן דעם זמן הברית,
is
איז
(more)
(מער)
fitting the word “yuladu”,
מתאים דער וואָרט „יולדו”,
because the covenant is quite in proximity to the time of birth15.
ווייל דער ברית איז גאָר בסמיכות צום זמן הלידה .
3)
ג)
And the main point: it is more plausible to learn that Yosef was the sandek at "Bnei Machir",
ועיקר: עס איז מער מסתבר צו לערנען אַז יוסף איז געווען דער סנדק ביי „בני מכיר”,
than to say that being a viceroy and occupied with the governance of the state and without him "no man could lift his hand or his foot"16,
ווי צו זאָגן אַז זייענדיק אַ משנה למלך און פאַרנומען מיט הנהגת המדינה ובלעדו „לא ירים איש את ידו ואת רגלו” ,
he himself occupied himself with raising his grandchildren.
האָט ער זיך אַליין אָפּגעגעבן מיט מגדל זיין זיינע אוראייניקלעך.
And therefore,
און דערפאַר,
even though in parshas Vayeitzei Rashi translates "al birchai — like its Targum v'ana arebi",
אע”פ אַז אין פ׳ ויצא טייטשט רש”י „על ברכי — כתרגומו ואנא ארבי”,
one might have thought,
וואָלט מען געקענט מיינען,
that here one must translate "yuldu al birchai Yosef" like the explanation of Targum Yonasan.
אַז דאָ דאַרף מען טייטשן „יולדו על ברכי יוסף” ווי דער פירוש פון תרגום יונתן.
And in order to negate this interpretation,
און כדי צו שולל זיין אָט דעם פירוש,
Rashi does not suffice with saying only
באַנוגנט זיך ניט רש”י מיט זאָגן נאָר
"like its Targum,"
„כתרגומו”,
but adds to explain the <b>content</b> of the interpretation of "its Targum" — "they raised him etc.,"
נאָר איז מוסיף לבאר דעם תוכן הפירוש פון „תרגומו” — „גדלן כו׳”,
to emphasize,
להדגיש,
that the necessity to translate here "like its Targum" is
אַז דער הכרח צו טייטשן דאָ „כתרגומו” איז
(not
(ניט
(only)
(נאָר)
due to the Targum and translation of the words "upon the knees of Joseph,"
מצד דעם תרגום און טייטש פון די ווערטער „על ברכי יוסף”,
but)
נאָר)
from the <b>content</b> of the verse,
פון דעם תוכן הכתוב,
as follows.
כדלקמן.
5.
ה.
In the verse it says, “And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation,
אין פסוק שטייט „וירא יוסף לאפרים בני שלשים,
also the children of Machir the son of Manasseh were born upon Joseph’s knees.”
גם בני מכיר בן מנשה יולדו על ברכי יוסף”.
From the fact that the verse says “<b>also</b> the children of Machir etc.” it is proven,
פון דעם וואָס דער פסוק זאָגט „ גם בני מכיר גו׳” איז מוכח,
that in this lies a novelty regarding “And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation” —
אַז דערין ליגט אַ חידוש לגבי „וירא יוסף לאפרים בני שלשים" —
It is not understood: That which Joseph merited to see “children of the <b>third generation</b>” from Ephraim indicates a longer span of time than that which “the children of Machir the son of Manasseh” were born in his lifetime — because
איז ניט מובן: דאָס וואָס יוסף האָט דערלעבט צו זען „בני שלשים ” פון אפרים׳ן ווייזט אויף אַ לענגערן משך זמן ווי דאָס וואָס „בני מכיר בן מנשה” זיינען געבוירן געוואָרן בחייו — ווייל
(a)
(א)
they are only “second-generation children”17,
זיי זיינען בלויז „בנים שניים” ,
and
און
(b)
(ב)
from <b>Manasseh</b>,
פון מנשה׳ן ,
who was older than Ephraim18?
וואָס איז געווען עלטער פון אפרים׳ן ?
According to Targum Onkelos, however, it is understandable: the "thirty-year-olds" of Ephraim, Yosef only <b>saw</b>
לויט תרגום אונקלוס אָבער איז עס פאַרשטאַנדיק: די „בני שלשים” לאפרים האָט יוסף בלויז געזען
(when they were very small)
(ווען זיי זיינען געווען גאָר קליין)
; but the "children of Machir son of Menashe" was the novelty,
; משא”כ די „בני מכיר בן מנשה” איז געווען דער חידוש,
that
אַז
Yosef <b>raised</b> them19
יוסף האָט זיי מגדל געווען
(which means until an older age).
(וואָס דאָס מיינט ביז צו אַן עלטערן גיל).
And in order to emphasize even more,
און כדי צו נאָך מער מדגיש זיין,
that this speaks about raising one's children until an older age
אַז דאָס רעדט זיך וועגן מגדל זיין קינדער ביז צו אַן עלטערן גיל
(not like the "thirty-year-olds" of Ephraim),
(ניט ווי די „בני שלשים” לאפרים),
Rashi adds that "on the knees of Joseph" means "between his knees" — which means,
איז רש”י מוסיף אַז „על ברכי יוסף” מיינט „ בין ברכיו” — וואָס דאָס מיינט,
as above,
כנ”ל,
the raising to an older age"20.
דעם גידול אין אַן עלטערן גיל” .
6.
ו.
From the verse "were born on the knees of Joseph" — both according to the interpretation of Targum Yonatan and according to the interpretation of Targum Onkelos and Rashi — one can also derive matters in the halachic part of the Torah,
פון דעם פסוק „יולדו על ברכי יוסף” — סיי כפירוש התרגום יונתן און סיי כפירוש תרגום אונקלוס ורש”י — קען מען אויך אַרויסנעמען ענינים אין חלק ההלכה שבתורה,
and among them:
ומהם:
The Alter Rebbe says in Shulchan Aruch21,
דער אַלטער רבי זאָגט אין שו”ע ,
that the beginning of the entry of the holy soul into the body is at the time of circumcision
אַז תחילת כניסת נפש הקדושה בגוף איז בשעת המילה
(which is why — "one who is careful from touching the minor from the day of circumcision onward, holy shall he be called").
(וואָס דערפאַר — „הנזהר מנגיעת הקטן מיום המילה ואילך קדוש יאמר לו”).
On this law in the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch it is not marked
אויף דעם דין אין אַלטן רבי׳נס שו”ע איז ניט אָנגעצייכנט
(on the margin)
(אויפן גליון)
the source.
דער מקור.
Once it was explained22,
אַמאָל האָט מען מבאר געווען ,
that it can be said that the source is in the book Seder HaYom23
שי”ל אַז דער מקור איז אין ספר סדר היום
and before this in Menorat HaMaor24
ולפני זה במנורת המאור
(by Rabbi Yisrael Alnakawa)
(לר׳ ישראל אלנקאווה)
and Reishit Chochmah,
וראשית חכמה,
which
וואָס
He rules
ער פּסק׳נט
(like the opinion25)
(ווי די דיעה )
that "a minor from when does he come to the World to Come etc. from the time he is circumcised."
אַז „קטן מאימתי בא לעולם הבא כו׳ משעה שנימול”.
According to what was said above, one can say,
ע”פ הנ”ל יש לומר,
that this is connected to a much earlier source — Targum Yonatan mentioned above on "were born on the knees of Joseph" — "when they were born, their circumcision was by Joseph" — it turns out,
אַז דאָס איז פאַרבונדן מיט אַ גאָר פריערדיקן מקור — תרגום יונתן הנ”ל אויף „יולדו על ברכי יוסף” — „כד אתילידו גזירינון יוסף” — קומט אויס,
that the covenant
אַז דער ברית
("their circumcision")
(„גזירינון”)
is the time of "they were born."
איז דער זמן פון „אתילידו”.
And at first glance,
ולכאורה,
the time of the covenant is indeed in proximity to birth,
דער זמן הברית איז טאַקע בסמיכות צו לידה,
but not "when they were born"?
אָבער ניט „ כד אתילידו”?
And according to the words of the Alter Rebbe mentioned above, it is understandable — then is the <b>entry</b> of the holy soul into the body,
וע”פ דברי אדה”ז הנ”ל איז פאַרשטאַנדיק — דעמאָלט איז די כניסת נפש הקדושה בגוף,
which is analogous to birth.
וואָס איז דוגמת לידה.
7.
ז.
Another matter in halachah that one can derive from the Targum Yonasan mentioned above:
נאָך אַן ענין אין הלכה וואָס מ׳קען אַרויסנעמען פון תרגום יונתן הנ”ל:
It is a Jewish custom26
ס׳איז אַ מנהג ישראל
that one should not honor the same person with sandeka'ut (being sandek) for two brothers.
אַז מ׳זאָל ניט מכבד זיין דעמזעלבן מענטשן מיט סנדקאות ביי צוויי ברידער.
And the reason for this: circumcision is compared to the service of the incense-offering,
און דער טעם דערפון: מילה ווערט פאַרגליכן צו עבודת הקטורת,
and regarding the incense-offering it says27
און ביי קטורת שטייט
"Never did a person repeat in it"26.
„מעולם לא שנה אדם בה“ .
One asks28
פרעגט מען
on this from Targum Yonatan: it states here that "the sons of Machir" "Yosef circumcised them",
אויף דעם פון דעם תרגום יונתן: עס שטייט דאָך דאָ אַז „ בני מכיר” „גזירינון יוסף",
that Yosef was the sandek for the sons of Machir — plural?
אַז יוסף איז געווען דער סנדק ביי בני מכיר — לשון רבים?
And one could say,
ויש לומר,
that from this there is a support to the words of the Chasam Sofer29,
אַז פון דעם איז אַ סמך צו דברי החתם סופר ,
that a mara d'asra
אַז אַ מרא דאתרא
can be sandak for several children of the same parents — and similar to the burning of the incense,
קען זיין סנדק ביי מערערע קינדער פון די זעלבע עלטערן — וכדוגמת הקטרת הקטורת,
that the law of "new [ingredients] for the incense"30
וואָס דער דין פון „חדשים לקטורת”
is only regarding other kohanim,
איז נאָר בנוגע אַנדערע כהנים,
but not in relation to a Kohen Gadol,
אָבער ניט בשייכות צו אַ כהן גדול,
who could offer the incense whenever he wanted31.
וואָס האָט געקענט מקטיר זיין קטורת ווען נאָר ער האָט געוואָלט .
And likewise Yosef,
ועד”ז יוסף,
since he was "the ruler over the land"32
וויבאַלד ער איז געווען „השליט על הארץ”
(like)
(בדוגמת)
a master of the place.

From Targum Onkelos and Rashi one can learn from this verse a law in the laws of Talmud Torah:
פון תרגום אונקלוס ופרש”י קען מען אָפּלערנען פון דעם פסוק אַ דין אין הלכות תלמוד תורה:
From the verse33
פון דעם פסוק
"And you shall make them known to your children and your children's children" we learn34
„והודעתם לבניך ולבני בניך” לערנט מען אָפּ
an obligation to teach Torah not only with his son but also with his son's son.
אַ חיוב צו לערנען תורה ניט נאָר מיט בנו נאָר אויך מיט בן בנו.
Regarding a son's son's son
וועגן בן בן בנו
(a great-grandson)
(אַן אור־אייניקל)
But the law is35,
אָבער איז דער דין ,
that he is obligated to teach them only in a case when he is
אַז ער איז מחוייב מיט זיי לערנען נאָר אין פאַל ווען ער איז
(a "wise man" that is)
(אַ „חכם” וואָס איז)
obligated to teach with students <b>in general</b>
מחוייב צו לערנען מיט תלמידים בכלל
(in which case he must give precedence to "his own offspring over other students").
(וואָס דאַן דאַרף ער מקדים זיין „יוצאי יריכו לתלמידים אחרים").
But not so if in the city there are "greater in wisdom than him" in which case he is not obligated to teach with students
משא"כ אויב אין שטאָט זיינען פאַראַן „גדולים בחכמה ממנו” וואָס דאַמאָלס איז ער ניט מחוייב צו לערנען מיט תלמידים
(in general),
(בכלל),
then upon the elder grandfather there is no obligation that he should teach with his great-grandson.
איז אויפן עלטער זיידן ניטאָ קיין חיוב אַז ער זאָל לערנען מיט זיין אור־אייניקל.
According to Targum Onkelos and Rashi however,
לויט תרגום אונקלום ופרש”י אָבער,
that Joseph raised the children of Machir son of Menashe — which simply means also
אַז יוסף האָט מגדל געווען די בני מכיר בן מנשה — וואָס בפשטות מיינט דאָס אויך
(and primarily36)
(ובעיקר )
that he taught them Torah37
אַז ער האָט מיט זיי געלערנט תורה
— it implies not so:
— איז משמע ניט אַזוי:
Simply, it is implied,
בפשטות איז משמע,
that Yosef was not obligated to teach students at all,
אַז יוסף איז ניט געווען מחוייב צו לערנען מיט תלמידים בכלל,
because
ווייל
(a)
(א)
Yehudah led a yeshivah there — "and Yehudah he sent etc. to instruct before him in Goshen"38,
יהודה האָט דאָרט אָנגעפירט אַ ישיבה — „ואת יהודה שלח גו׳ להורות לפניו גושנה” ,
and it is logical that Yehudah
און ס׳איז מסתבר אַז יהודה
(who led a yeshivah all those years)
(וואָס האָט די אַלע יאָרן אָנגעפירט אַ ישיבה)
was "greater in wisdom than him"39.
איז געווען „גדול בחכמה ממנו” .
(b)
(ב)
Since Yosef was viceroy and occupied with the affairs of state of the land of Egypt including also Yaakov and his household — and in the language of halachah, engaged in communal needs faithfully — he is exempt40
וויבאַלד אַז יוסף איז געווען משנה למלך און פאַרנומען מיט עניני המדינה פון ארץ מצרים כולל אויך יעקב וביתו — ובלשון ההלכה עוסק בצרכי צבור באמונה — איז ער פטור
from teaching students41
פון צו לערנען מיט תלמידים
Why then did Yosef himself teach the children of Machir42,
פאַרוואָס־זשע האָט יוסף אַליין געלערנט מיט בני מכיר ,
the children of his grandson43?
בני בן בנו ?
One sees from this,
זעט מען דערפון,
that Rashi — in his commentary on the Torah — holds,
אַז רש”י — בפירושו על התורה — האַלט,
that also upon a great-grandfather there is an obligation to teach Torah to his great-grandchildren
אַז אויך אויף אַן עלטער־זיידן איז דאָ אַ חיוב צו לערנען תורה מיט זיינע אור־אייניקלעך
(like a grandfather with grandchildren)44.
(ווי אַ זיידע מיט אייניקלעך) .
And therefore Yosef himself taught them Torah.
און דעריבער האָט יוסף אַליין געלערנט מיט זיי תורה.
T.
ט.
From this there is also a directive for practice45,
פון דעם האָט מען אויך אַ הוראה למעשה ,
that when a Jew merits to live to see great-grandchildren, he must himself teach them Torah.
אַז בשעת אַ איד איז זוכה צו דערלעבן אור־אייניקלעך דאַרף ער מיט זיי אַליין לערנען תורה.
And if he himself cannot teach them — because he does not have the strength,
און אויב ער אַליין קען מיט זיי ניט לערנען — ווייל ער האָט ניט קיין כח,
or he is not suited for this and the like — he must give a large sum46
אָדער ער איז דערצו ניט מסוגל וכיו”ב — דאַרף ער געבן אַ גרויסן סכום
to support the yeshivah in which his great-grandchildren study.
אויף אויסצוהאַלטן די ישיבה אין וועלכע עס לערנען זיינע אור־אייניקלעך.
And in particular according to the words of our sages, may their memory be blessed47
ובפרט ע”פ מחז”ל
(Regarding
(בנוגע צו
Jacob)
יעקב׳ן)
: "Just as his seed is in life, so he is in life"
: „מה זרעו בחיים אף הוא בחיים”
(That "his seed" means here not only sons and sons' sons,
(וואָס „זרעו” מיינט דאָך ניט נאָר בנים ובני בנים,
but all who came from his loins,
נאָר כל יוצאי חלציו,
also the son of his son)
אויך בני בן בנו)
— he must do all that depends on him so that those who came from his loins should be
— דאַרף ער טאָן כל התלוי בו בכדי אַז יוצאי חלציו זאָלן זיין
In the true life,
בחיים האמיתיים,
learning Torah — also because in this consists his own vitality — "he too is in life".
לערנען תורה — אויך ווייל אין דעם באַשטייט זיין אייגענער חיות — „אף הוא בחיים”.
