Tiferes (תפארת) — Harmony / Beauty
Core definition
Tiferes — "harmony," "beauty," "glory" — is the sefirah of the middle line: the attribute of mercy (rachamim) that joins and harmonizes Chesed (kindness) and Gevurah (severity), the two opposed lines. It is Yackov's middah — "titen emes leYackov" — the "middle bar passing from end to end," rising to Keter above and bestowing into Malchus below, including right and left [15911/maamar_016 :: Overview; 19801/maamar_019 :: Overview].
How the Rebbeim develop it
Yackov himself is the truth-middah: Tiferes joining Chesed and Gevurah without opponent [15911/maamar_016 :: Overview]. Among the six middos of the Nefesh HaElokis, Tiferes is mercy — alongside Netzach (victory), Hod (acknowledgment), and Yesod, which unites sovev kol almin and memale kol almin [15962/maamar_004 :: Overview]. These six middos undergo hiskalelus (inter-inclusion): love from distance, love from closeness, awe from closeness — each middah containing the others [15962/maamar_004 :: Overview].
The classic exposition is Iyov 25:2 — "the ruler and the fear with Him, He makes peace in His heights." Rashi: Michoel (water, Chesed) and Gavriel (fire, Gevurah) — opposites by nature, yet in His will they exchange their actions (as in Eliyahu's Minchah prayer); the water does not extinguish the fire. The Zohar continues: "the ruler" (72) is Yackov — "you are a prince of Elokim among us" — Chesed; "the fear" is Yitzchak — "the fear of Yitzchak was to me" — Gevurah; opposites. "He makes peace in His heights" is Yackov: Yackov makes peace, since he holds this and this — Tiferes, the middle bar passing from end to end, from Keter to Malchus's last level [19801/maamar_019 :: Overview]. In the seating of the sefiros in three lines — Chochmah, Chesed, Netzach on the right; Binah, Gevurah, Hod on the left — Tiferes stands in the middle line, rising until Keter, its bestowal in Malchus including right and left [19801/maamar_019 :: Overview].
It is precisely this middle-line structure that makes Tiferes the vessel for the highest truth: the gift of emes la'amito (the truth of truth) to Yackov is this truth drawn into Tiferes — which alone resembles it, through its inclusion of Chesed and Gevurah [15962/maamar_007 :: Overview]. And in the order of Atzilus, the two lines of Chesed and Gevurah stand opposed to the middle line — Yackov's "nachalah bli metzarim" (inheritance without straits), the boundlessness of the one who includes both [15911/maamar_016 :: Overview].
The mercy-middah itself is examined for its apparent boundlessness: it seems to have no gevul, yet it has its real boundary — "ein merachamim badin" (there is no mercy in judgment) [15911/maamar_016 :: Overview].
The joining itself comes from above both: opposites by nature, in His will they exchange their actions (as in Eliyahu's Minchah prayer) — how much more so kneaded, not opposites at all. "He makes peace": the opposites complete each other through a light's revelation from Him, higher than both — as two high ministers, each an existence opposite the other, are united before the king through their nullification to the king [19801/maamar_019 :: Overview].
Key distinctions
- The three lines. Right (Chesed), left (Gevurah), middle (Tiferes) — the middle alone rises to Keter and includes both sides in its bestowal [19801/maamar_019 :: Overview].
- Mercy vs. kindness. Tiferes-rachamim is not Chesed: it is the harmony of the opposites, with its own boundary in judgment [15911/maamar_016 :: Overview].
- Tiferes as truth's vessel. Only the middle line, including Chesed and Gevurah, can receive the truth of truth [15962/maamar_007 :: Overview].
