Techiyas HaMeisim (תחית המתים) — The Resurrection of the Dead

Core definition

Techiyas hameisim is the future revival of the dead — the thirteenth principle of faith — when the neshamas shall stand in bodies again. "Ahavah ba'ta'anugim" (Shir HaShirim 7:7) is for techiyas ha'meisim: "the physical body, as before the sin" [58849/maamar_022 :: עמוד רנ]. It comes after yemos haMashiach: "Known: techiyas hameisim shall be after yemos haMashiach" [58837/maamar_046 :: עמוד תיד].

How the Rebbeim develop it

Techiyas hameisim and yemos haMashiach are "very high in madregah above Gan Eden — even above Gan Eden ha'elyon," which is only for the time being; "the main thing is olam ha'ba and techiyah" [57652/maamar_024 :: עמוד רמו]. In the future, in techiyas ha'meisim, will be the revelation of Eden itself — "sha'ashu'ei ha'melech b'Awtsmooso" (the King's delights in His very Self) — while all of Gan Eden's revelations are only a ha'arah (hence the multitude of grades there) [58849/maamar_022 :: עמוד רנא]. In the future "the body will live from hasagos Divinity — as the neshamah now — the main reception of chiyus through the body — the neshamah will need bodies" [57652/maamar_024 :: עמוד רמו].

The mechanism is not according to hishtalshelus at all: not like the nefesh's chiyus through blood and flesh, but "a great jump from above the order of hishtalshelus — from 'tala d'natif me'Atika'" (the dew that drips from Atika), above chochmah, the root of Atzilus [57652/maamar_024 :: עמוד רמו]. The neshamas shall stand in bodies: through "tal techiyah" (the dew of revival) skin and flesh shall rise over them — as in Yechezkel's revived bones [58837/maamar_046 :: עמוד תטו]. These will not be bodies from physical father and mother, but heavenly bodies — "from the Holy One through 'tal techiyah'" — holy and utterly pure bodies, like Adam HaRishon's body ("his heel dimmed the sun's orb"), refined like light; "holy, utterly guarded, living eternally" [58837/maamar_046 :: עמוד תטו].

All shall arise: every neshama from Yackov to the last generation, and also the high neshamas included in Adam HaRishon until Yackov [58837/maamar_046 :: עמוד תיד]. Through a novelty they shall receive the Ohr Ein Sof's essence: "in the future the essence revealed mamash" — the neshama's clothing in the body, body and soul the male and female aspect, for through a novelty they shall receive the essence [58837/maamar_046 :: עמוד תטו].

The essential revelation of techiyas ha'meisim is earned through the practical mitzvos of now: Eden's hidden essential pleasure will be revealed then — "the reward received in the body specifically" [58849/maamar_022 :: עמוד רנו]. "In techiyas ha'meisim they will all come to be enclothed in bodies — to receive the essential, simple pleasure of the level of Eden" [58849/maamar_022 :: עמוד רנו].

Key distinctions

• Techiyas hameisim vs. yemos haMashiach. The resurrection is after Mashiach's days: in Mashiach's days the bodies are utterly refined (the birur's completion), yet still born of physical father and mother; in techiyas hameisim the bodies are heavenly, through tal techiyah [58837/maamar_046 :: עמוד תיד–תטו].
• Techiyas hameisim vs. Gan Eden. Gan Eden — even the supernal — is only ha'arah, and only "for the time being"; techiyas hameisim is the revelation of Eden itself, above Gan Eden ha'elyon [57652/maamar_024 :: עמוד רמו; 58849/maamar_022 :: עמוד רנא].
• Not per hishtalshelus. The revival is not the soul vitalizing the body through blood and flesh, but a leap from "tala d'natif me'Atika," above chochmah [57652/maamar_024 :: עמוד רמו].
• The body's dignity. The reward is received specifically in the body; the future body's root is from sovev kol almin, though received through the neshama [58849/maamar_022 :: עמוד רנו; 57652/maamar_024 :: עמוד רמו].
