Gevurah as restraint (גבורה בצמצום) — the concealing, measuring mode

Core definition

Gevurah — the left line's attribute — is not only judgment (din) but restraint: the power of arrest, concealment, and measure by which the light is held back so that it can be received. "For a sun and a shield is Havayah Elokim": the sun can only shine "through the sheath (nartik), which conceals and restrains the luminary (ma'or) and the light included in the luminary — and the more it is in the aspect of arrest and restraint, the more there will be the aspect of light and revelation" [31678/maamar_015 :: עב׳ 379–385]. Without gevurah's restraint there is no revelation at all: the essence, wholly beyond revelation, flows outward only through the restraining shield [31678/maamar_015 :: עב׳ 599].

How the Rebbeim develop it

The three reasons. Why does restraint produce revelation? Three reasons are given: (1) restraint brings the intellect down into the measure (erech) of the receiver — as "va'atzalti" means "I shall bring down"; Atzilus itself is "the revelation outside His essence through a descent into the measure of the worlds"; (2) through the restraint, "the light has something to take hold of (davar hane'echaz), and through this it becomes in the aspect of light" — like the wick for fire, or the garment in "oteh ohr kasalmah"; (3) through the very arrest and restraint, "the essential will — that there be the aspect of a revelation of light — is revealed" [31678/maamar_015 :: עב׳ 442–490].

The teacher and the student. "The same holds for a teacher: only by arresting his own intellectual light within himself does the light fitted to the student emerge." "The brain's matter is the restraining vessel (keli) of the intellect — which is why a sage who cannot restrain his light cannot teach, while one with a strong 'vessel' can" — and "that revealed intellectual light flows from the power of maskil... through the restraint — through being restrained and concealed within itself" [31678/maamar_015 :: עב׳ 508–571].

The law in avodah. "From below to above, the same law is tangible: 'a person does not grasp a matter of halachah unless he has stumbled in it' — the stumbling is the restraint through which deeper revelation comes." "The slow student whose thick 'membrane' forces great toil ends up understanding far more deeply than the quick one." Likewise "a seed must decay in the earth before it grows." In mitzvos: "positive mitzvos draw immediately... while negative mitzvos draw over time but on a far higher level" — concealment's drawing is deeper [31678/maamar_015 :: Summary — restraint from below (pages קב–קג)]. And "through this specifically is the revelation" — "through restraint, specifically, is the revelation" [31678/maamar_015 :: עב׳ 851].

Atzeres: restraint as joy's vessel. The word atzeres (עצרת) is "the term עכבה (restraint/detention)": "restraint is not joy's opposite but its vessel — absorption comes through restraining expansion." For there to be "absorption of the intellect, it is through the restraint that restrains the intellect's expansion — but the absorption's essence is specifically through restraint." Shemini Atzeres is keser Torah — the revelation of Kesser: not simchah (the mochin's revelation) but gilah — "joy covered by prevailing fear ('gilu bir'adah'), inward joy with outward fear." "Joy is encompassing and transient, liable to strange mixture; joy covered by fear is absorbed inwardly and permanent — hence Shemini Atzeres's drawing-down, kabbolas ol for the whole year, is 'atzeres': restraint, absorption" [66495/maamar_004 :: Summary — pages 39–40; Summary — pages 44–47].

The letters through gevurah. The letters' revelation is "only through Gevuros and tzimtzumim (contracting/hiding the Chochmah-light's essence)": fire's nature is to contract — "כביש באשא = contraction through fire — the Gevuros burning/drying the Chochmah-waters' inwardness — revealing its externality and hinder part — the letters" [15893/maamar_019 :: Summary of section ג]. The vessels themselves "come from the tzimtzum (reshimu, the power of limit)" [58837/maamar_013 :: Chunk 2 summary].

Key distinctions

Restraint vs. judgment. Both are gevurah: as din it judges the recipient — "the blow is from the Elokim name"; as restraint it arrests the light — "the shield... that conceals and restrains the luminary." The final question of the maamar: "restraint applies to revealed light — but how can the magen restrain the ma'or, whose light is not revelation at all? The answer: the essential will — that there be revelation — is itself the object of the restraint" [31678/maamar_015 :: עב׳ 1112–1121].

Arrest vs. absence. The shield does not remove the light; it is "that conceals and restrains" so that the light gains davar hane'echaz — something to take hold of — and becomes light [31678/maamar_015 :: עב׳ 442].

Simchah vs. gilah. Simchah is revelation — expansiveness, transient; gilah is "joy covered by fear" — inward, absorbed, permanent. Restraint turns joy into absorption [66495/maamar_004 :: Summary — pages 44–47].
