Achdus (אחדות) — Unity

Core definition

Achdus, "unity," is both a Divine attribute and a human task: the oneness of Havayah ("Havayah's achdus"), and the joining of Yisrael into a single body. "All our Torah's foundation and our people's upholding's foundation in the world is the achdus and tzedakah" [31654/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 1006], as in "v'ahavta l'rei'acha kamocha" [31654/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 1007]. On Rosh Hashanah, "then Havayah's achdus is drawn in Knesses Yisrael in Krias Shema and Shemoneh Esrei" [58845/maamar_011 :: עב׳ 255] — the Divine unity is received by the collective soul.

How the Rebbeim develop it

The philosophical core is the distinction between two kinds of oneness. Yachid expresses "union from one" — a unity that is essential and simple; Echad is "the counted one," a unity composed of parts [58838/maamar_066 :: עב׳ 137–139]. The Divine unity is "not the aspect of union from particulars" — it is essential [58838/maamar_066 :: עב׳ 168–170]. This generates the standing question: "how are drawn multitude of opinions and multitude of hashgachos from the simple achdus?" [58838/maamar_066 :: עב׳ 234–236] — how multiplicity emerges from a oneness that precedes all composition.

In avodah, achdus is the perfection of souls joining: "Yeshurun = the Jewish souls' generality's joining together" [58845/maamar_011 :: עב׳ 371]. Tefillin is "our hisachdus and dveikus in Divinity" (Maharsha) [58837/maamar_052 :: עב׳ 115]. The mechanism runs through the mochin: "through mochin-degadlus is made the birur in wholeness — to be in a real shalom and achdus aspect" [58837/maamar_052 :: עב׳ 310]; "the evil will be nullified from them — and through this there will be in them shalom and achdus" [58837/maamar_052 :: עב׳ 342]. The hearts' uniting below draws the response above: "as 'k'mayim hapanim el hapanim' — i.e., the hearts' uniting below, so the upper man's heart to the lower man" [31654/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 1156].

The unity of Yisrael draws from His unity: those who make achdus below are "drawing of His unity, blessed be He" [31654/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 1367]. It is made "in the hishtalshelut's order's aspect through the Torah and mitzvot's keeping" [31654/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 1069], as "ramach pikudin, ramach eivrin d'malka" — the 248 commandments are the King's 248 limbs [31654/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 1070]. Its power is such that even the generation of the dispersion, "though having unity — 'hen am echad v'safah achat' — for this the middah of judgment could not rule in them" [31654/maamar_012 :: עב׳ 1040–1041].
