It has already been spoken about many times regarding the custom of speaking and hearing "words of rebuke" on a fast day and public fast.
מ'האט שוין גערעדט כמ"פ וועגן דעם מנהג פון רעדן און הערן) "דברי כבושין" אין א יום צום ותענית
(Which today is a "day of favor to Hashem",
(וואס יעמולט איז א "יום רצון לה'",
a "time of favor",

"Words of rebuke" have already been spoken several times on fast days

we will only speak the main points:

The Alter Rebbe explains in Igeres HaTeshuvah<sup>2</sup>,
דער אלטער רבי איז מבאר אין אגרת התשובה 2,
that a fast is a "day of favor",
אז א צום איז א "יום רצון",
based on what is stated in Isaiah "Is this the fast I choose, a day of favor to Hashem" –
מיוסד אויף דעם וואס עס שטייט אין ישעי' "הלזה תקרא צום ויום רצון לה'" –
which verse is said in the haftarah of Yom Kippur, the
וואס דעם פסוק זאגט מען אין דער הפטורה פון יום הכפורים, דער
(only)

fast that is explicit in the Written Torah –
צום וואס שטייט מפורש אין תורה שבכתב –
"from which it is derived that the desirable fast is a day of favor".
"מכלל שהצום הנרצה הוא יום רצון".
The explanation of a "desirable fast"
דער פירוש אין א "צום הנרצה"
(which specifically is a "day of favor to Hashem") –
(וואס דוקא איז "יום רצון לה'") –
is understood from what is explained there in Isaiah:
איז פארשטאנדיק פון דעם וואס עס ווערט מבואר דארטן אין ישעי':
It states there

as is said in the haftarah of Yom Kippur:
ווי מ'זאגט אין דער הפטורה פון יוהכ"פ:
"Is this the fast I choose, a day for a man to afflict his soul,
"הכזה יהי' צום אבחרהו יום ענות אדם נפשו,
to bow his head like a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes?
הלכף כאגמון ראשו ושק ואפר יציע,
Is this what you call a fast, and a day of favor to Hashem?<sup>3</sup>
הלזה תקרא צום ויום רצון לה' 3
(Is that so)?! – Rather:
(בתמי")?! – נאר:
"Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and to bring the poor that are cast out to your house,
"הלוא פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית,
when you see the naked, that you cover him, etc.<sup>6</sup>".
כי תראה ערום וכסיתו גו' 6 ".
That is:

Although on a fast day and public fast there are matters that one must do in a simple sense –
אע"פ וואס אין א יום צום ותענית זיינען דא ענינים וואס מ'דארף זיי טאן בפשטות –
abstaining from eating and drinking,
מניעת האכילה ושתי',
and on Yom Kippur –
וביוהכ"פ –
the five afflictions<sup>4</sup>,
די חמשה עינויים 4,
nevertheless this is not the main and true essence of a fast,
איז אבער ניט דאס דער עיקר און אמת'ער ענין פון א צום,
and one may not fulfill it only with that which "to bow his head like a bulrush",
און מ'טאר ניט יוצא זיין נאר דערמיט וואס "הלכף כאגמון ראשו",
that one bows the head with humility and submission and lowliness,
אז מ'בויגט איין דעם ראש בעניוות ובהכנעה ושפלות,
until the ultimate lowliness –
ביז בתכלית השפלות –
rather the main and true essence of a fast,
נאר דער עיקר און אמת'ער ענין פון א צום,
a "day of favor to Hashem",
א "יום רצון לה'",
is<sup>5</sup> –

"to share your bread with the hungry, and to bring the poor that are cast out to your house, etc."
"פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית גו'".
And although it is a mitzvah that there be affliction on a fast day,
והגם אז ס'איז א מצוה אז ס'זאל זיין עינוי ביום צום,
and as it states explicitly in the Written Torah regarding the afflictions on Yom Kippur,
און ווי עס שטייט בפירוש אין תורה שבכתב בנוגע העינויים ביום הכפורים,
in contrast, the matter that the essence of a fast is "to share your bread with the hungry, etc." is stated only in the words of the Prophets,
משא"כ דער ענין אז דער עיקר פון א צום איז "פרס לרעב לחמך גו'" שטייט ערשט אין דברי קבלה,
and this only later became the haftarah of Yom Kippur –
און דאס איז ערשט דערנאך געווארן די הפטורה פון יוהכ"פ –
nevertheless, the haftarah itself reveals and explains,
אעפ"כ איז די הפטורה עצמה מגלה און מסביר,
that the main and true essence of a fast is –
אז דער עיקר און אמת'ער ענין פון א צום איז –
not the afflictions,
ניט די עינויים,
rather "to share your bread with the hungry, etc.",
נאר "פרס לרעב לחמך גו'",
and as below
וכדלקמן

Which, in general, "to share your bread with the hungry, and to bring the poor that are cast out to your house" is the matter of charity,
וואס בכללות איז "פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית" דער ענין הצדקה,
And along with this there must also be the matter of prayer,
און דערביי דארף אויך זיין ענין התפלה,
the inner aspect
דער פנימיות הענין
(in service)

of "sackcloth and ashes",

And this is also connected with the study of Torah. For in order to know how prayer should be,
און דאס איז אויך פארבונדן מיט לימוד התורה. ווארום בכדי מ'זאל וויסן ווי אזוי ס'זאל זיין תפלה,
and how the giving of charity should be,
און ווי אזוי ס'זאל זיין נתינת הצדקה,
and how one must conduct oneself in general on a fast day and public fast –
און ווי אזוי מ'דארף זיך בכלל פירן ביום צום ותענית –
one must study Torah,
דארף מען לערנען תורה,
for Torah teaches and gives understanding of how all things should be.
וואס תורה לערנט און גיט צו פארשטיין ווי אלע זאכן דארפן זיין.
Which are the three pillars upon which "the world stands"<sup>7</sup> and "the world endures"<sup>8</sup> –
וואס דאס זיינען די שלשה עמודים שעליהם "העולם עומד" 7 און "העולם קיים" 8 –
Torah,
תורה,
service
עבודה
(prayer)
(תפלה)
and acts of kindness.
און גמילות חסדים.
From this it follows,
דערפון קומט אויס,
that the main and true essence of a fast,
אז דער עיקר און אמת'ער ענין פון א צום,
i.e. a "desirable fast",
ד.ה. א "צום הנרצה",
which specifically is a "day of favor to Hashem", is
וואס דוקא דאס איז א "יום רצון לה'", איז
(not the afflictions, etc., rather)

that this brings about an increase with greater vigor and greater strength in the performance of the three pillars upon which the world stands,

And especially in these times:

It has already been spoken about many times that in these times one sees tangibly how the world is shaking and trembling and is on the verge of collapse.
מ'האט שוין גערעדט מערערע מאל אז בזמנים אלו זעט מען במוחש ווי דער עולם שאקלט זיך און טרייסלט זיך און האלט זיך בא פאנאנדערפאלן.
One must know,
דארף מען וויסן,
that this is not "a chance occurrence",
אז דאס איז ניט "נקרה נקרית",
rather the intention in that this occurs is,
נאר די כוונה אין דעם וואס דאס טרעפט איז,
that Jews should do something about it.
אז אידן זאלן דערצו עפעס טאן.
Which a fast in general comes to teach:
וואס דאס קומט לערנען א תענית בכלל:
The Rambam writes in his Laws of Fasts<sup>9</sup>,
דער רמב"ם שרייבט בהלכות תעניות שלו 9,
that a fast demonstrates and emphasizes,
אז א תענית באווייזט און איז מדגיש,
that the event which is the reason for establishing the fast –
אז דער מאורע וואס איז די סיבה אויף באשטימען דעם תענית –
is not, heaven forbid, "a chance occurrence",
איז ניט ח"ו "נקרה נקרית",
Rather "it is from the ways of repentance". The intention in this is,
נאר "מדרכי התשובה הוא". די כוונה אין דעם איז,
that this should bring Jews to repentance.
אז דאס זאל ברענגען אידן צו תשובה.
And so it is also regarding the four fasts
וואס אזוי איז עס אויך בנוגע צו די ד' צומות
(among them –
(בתוכם –
the Tenth of Tevet),
עשרה בטבת),
that they are "to arouse the hearts to open the ways of repentance, and let this be a reminder of our evil deeds and the deeds of our forefathers which were like our deeds now, until it caused them and us those troubles" and "by remembering these things we will return to do good"<sup>10</sup>.
אז זיי זיינען "כדי לעורר הלבבות לפתוח דרכי התשובה ויהי' זה זכרון למעשינו הרעים ומעשה אבותינו שהי' כמעשינו עתה עד שגרם להם ולנו אותן הצרות" וואס "בזכרון דברים אלו נשוב להיטיב" 10.
So too in our matter:
אזוי איז אויך בעניננו:
When one sees that the world is shaking and trembling and on the verge of falling apart –
בשעת מ'זעט אז דער עולם שאקלט זיך און טרייסלט זיך און האלט זיך בא פאנאנדערפאלן –
one must know that this is not "it happened by chance," heaven forbid,
דארף מען וויסן אז דאס איז ניט "נקרה נקרית" ח"ו,
but rather the intention in this is,
נאר די כוונה אין דעם איז,
that this should bring Jews to repentance –
אז דאס זאל ברענגען אידן צו תשובה –
to rectify deficiencies in their service in matters that brought about the irregular conduct in the world
טאן אויף חסרונות אין זייער עבודה אין ענינים וואס האבן געבראכט צו דער הנהגה בלתי רגילה בעולם
(that it shakes, etc.),
(אז עס שאקלט זיך וכו'),
which in simple terms are –
וואס דאס איז בפשטות –
the matters upon which "the world stands" and "the world endures"
די ענינים וואס עליהם "העולם עומד" און "העולם קיים"
(the opposite of the world shaking, etc.),

and acts of lovingkindness.

That is,

that one must increase in Torah,
אז מ'דארף מוסיף זיין טאן אין תורה,

and then automatically the cause that resulted from the lack in "the world stands" and "the world endures" will also be nullified –
וואס דעמולט וועט בדרך ממילא אויך בטל ווערן דער מסובב וואס איז ארויסגעקומען פון דעם וואס עס האט געפעלט אין "העולם עומד" און "העולם קיים" –
that the shaking and trembling will cease,
אז עס הערט זיך אויף דער שאקלען זיך און טרייסלען זיך,
and all the more so the falling apart.
און עאכו"כ דער פאנאנדערפאלן זיך.
What was discussed above is the common element in all the fasts;
המדובר לעיל איז דער דבר השווה אין אלע צומות ותעניות;
as has been said many times, each fast came because of and due to a specific event that was the cause that brought about that particular fast,
כמדובר כמ"פ אז יעדער צום ותענית איז געקומען צוליב ובסיבתו פון א מאורע מסויים וואס ער איז די סיבה וואס האט געבראכט צו דעם צום ותענית מסויים,
by virtue of which this fast is distinguished from the other fasts,
וואס מצד דעם איז דער צום ותענית אויסגעטיילט פון שאר הצומות ותעניות,
and accordingly there must also be a specific lesson from it,
ובמילא דארף אויך פון דעם זיין א הוראה מיוחדת,
According to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov<sup>11</sup>,
כתורת הבעש"ט הידועה 11,
that from every thing and event that a Jew hears or sees, he must learn a lesson for his service to Hashem,
אז פון יעדער זאך און מאורע וואס א איד הערט אדער זעט דארף ער דערפון אפלערנען א הוראה בעבודתו לה',
and all the more so from an event because of which a fast was established for all Israel in all generations –
ועאכו"כ פון א מאורע וואס צוליב אים איז געווארן א צום ותענית פאר כל ישראל בכל הדורות –
from this one certainly must
דארף מען דערפון זיכער
learn a lesson appropriate to the event that brought about the fast. That is:
אפלערנען א הוראה מתאימה צו דעם מאורע וואס האט געבראכט דעם צום. דאס הייסט:
When one knows the specific event that brought about a specific fast –
בשעת מ'ווייסט דעם מאורע מסויים וואס האט געבראכט צו דעם צום מסויים –
one knows in what "the ways of repentance" and "we will return and do good" must consist in order to rectify the matter.
ווייסט מען אין וואס עס דארפן באשטיין "דרכי התשובה" און דער "נשוב להיטיב" בכדי צו מתקן זיין דעם ענין.
The event that occurred on the Tenth of Tevet
דער מאורע וואס האט געטראפן בעשירי בטבת
(for which the "fast of the tenth" was established<sup>12</sup>)
(וואס דערפאר האט מען מתקן געווען דעם "צום העשירי" 12)
is –
איז –
that "on it the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar the wicked, laid siege against Jerusalem"<sup>13</sup>,
וואס "בו סמך מלך בבל נ"נ הרשע על ירושלים" 13,
and with this began the siege of Jerusalem,
און דערמיט האט זיך אנגעהויבן די באלאגערונג פון ירושלים,
"and brought it into siege and distress",
"והביאה במצור ומצוק",
And this was the beginning<sup>14</sup> that later had a continuation and led to the events that subsequently occurred,
און דאס איז געווען די התחלה 14 וואס האט דערנאך געהאט א המשך און האט דערפירט צו די מאורעות וואס זיינען דערנאך געטראפן,
which caused the other fasts,
וואס האבן גורם געווען די אנדערע צומות,
the "fast of the fourth"
דעם "צום הרביעי"
(the Seventeenth of Tammuz),
(שבעה עשר בתמוז),
"the fast of the fifth"
"צום החמישי"
(the Ninth of Av)
(תשעה באב)
"and the fast of the seventh"
"וצום השביעי"
(the Fast of Gedaliah),
(צום גדלי'),
as the Rambam<sup>15</sup> cites from the verse and explains all these fasts.

In simple terms, the matter was:
ווי דער ענין איז געווען בפשטות:
All the events that subsequently occurred,
אלע מאורעות וואס זיינען דערנאך געטראפן,
up to the destruction of the Holy Temple and the exile until this very day, etc. –
ביז צו דעם חורבן ביהמ"ק און דער גלות עד היום הזה כו' –
came from the fact that it was allowed that "the king of Babylon, etc., laid siege against Jerusalem",
זיינען געקומען דערפון וואס מ'האט צוגעלאזט אז ס'זאל זיין "סמך מלך בבל כו' על ירושלים",
it was allowed that the barrier between Jerusalem and "the king of Babylon" be weakened,
מ'האט צוגעלאזט אז עס זאל שוואכער ווערן די מחיצה צווישן ירושלים און "מלך בבל",
so that there be "the king of Babylon, etc., laid siege against Jerusalem",
אז עס זאל זיין "סמך מלך בבל כו' על ירושלים",
that "the king of Babylon" stand in proximity to Jerusalem.
אז "מלך בבל" זאל שטיין בסמיכות צו ירושלים.
The lesson and instruction from this in the service of Hashem for everyone,
דער לימוד און הוראה דערפון אין עבודת השם פאר יעדערן,
from the smallest to the greatest,
מקטן עד גדול,
"your heads, your tribes" to "your hewer of wood" and "your drawer of water"<sup>16</sup>:
"ראשיכם שבטיכם" ביז "חוטב עציך" און "שואב מימיך" 16:
"Jerusalem" is from the term "yireh shalem" (fear of the Perfect One)
"ירושלים" איז על שם "ירא שלם"
(as Tosafot<sup>17</sup> cites from the Midrash<sup>18</sup>),
(ווי תוספות 17 ברענגט אראפ פון מדרש 18),
the concept of perfect fear
דער ענין פון שלימות היראה
(of the Most High),
(פאר דעם אויבערשטן),
and as it was also in simple terms<sup>19</sup>,
און ווי ס'איז אויך געווען בפשטות 19,
that the pilgrimage to Jerusalem brought about in Jews an increase in fear of Heaven<sup>20</sup>,
אז די עלי' לרגל אין ירושלים האט געבראכט בא אידן א הוספה אין יראת שמים 20,
up to perfection in fear of Hashem.
ביז צו שלימות אין יראת השם.
It is therefore possible that there be a situation of "the king of Babylon laid siege against Jerusalem" –
קען דאך זיין א מציאות אז עס זאל זיין "סמך מלך בבל על ירושלים" –
that gentiles and gentile-ness come and touch the fear of Heaven,
אז גוים און גוי'אישקייט זאלן צוקומען און אנרירן די יראת השם,
up to the perfect fear of a Jew,
ביז שלימות היראה פון א אידן,
and in general –
ובכלל –
touch Jews and Judaism –
אנרירן אידן און אידישקייט –
The lesson from the fact that on the Tenth of Tevet there was "the king of Babylon encamped etc. against Jerusalem" and what resulted from it –
האט מען די הוראה פון דעם וואס בעשירי בטבת איז געווען "סמך מלך בבל כו' על ירושלים" און וואס דערפון איז ארויסגעקומען –
that one may not even allow that there should be "the king of Babylon encamped etc. against Jerusalem",
אז מ'טאר אפילו ניט צולאזן אז עס זאל זיין "סמך מלך בבל כו' על ירושלים",
"encamped" from the term of proximity and closeness,
"סמך" מלשון סמיכות וקירובים,
one may not allow that "the king of Babylon",
מ'טאר ניט צולאזן אז "מלך בבל",
gentiles and gentileness,
גוים און גוי'אישקייט,
should even come in proximity to "Jerusalem",
זאל אפילו צוקומען בסמיכות צו "ירושלים",
i.e., before it touches

the "walls" of "Jerusalem"
די "חומות" פון "ירושלים"

the perfection of awe),

or that which is found in "Jerusalem" itself –

one must guard that it should not come to begin with,

even in a manner of proximity,

and also against this one already wages war<sup>21</sup>;

And if there is "the king of Babylon encamped etc. against Jerusalem" G‑d forbid –
און אויב ס'ווערט "סמך מלך בבל כו' על ירושלים" ח"ו –
one goes out to war to nullify it entirely,
גייט מען ארויס למלחמה דאס אינגאנצן מבטל זיין,
For the very fact that one allows gentileness to surround "Jerusalem",
ווארום דאס גופא וואס מ'לאזט גוי'אישקייט ארומרינגלען "ירושלים",
Judaism,
אידישקייט,
even if this is only in a manner of "encamped",
איז אפילו אויב דאס איז נאר אין אן אופן פון "סמך",
that the evil inclination wants to convince that this
אז דער יצר וויל איינרעדן אז דאס
(gentileness)
(גוי'אישקייט)
is a matter that is in proximity to Judaism,
איז אן ענין וואס איז בסמיכות צו אידישקייט,
it is not so far,
ס'איז גאר ניט אזוי ווייט,
and on the contrary –
ואדרבה –
it is even close
דאס איז גאר נאענט
(G‑d forbid) –

it then brings that "Jerusalem" has from it "siege and distress",
ברענגט עס דערנאך אז "ירושלים" האט דערפון "מצור ומצוק",

if one does not rectify it, may G‑d spare us –

a continuation of undesirable events can result from it

that the "king of Babylon encamped etc. against Jerusalem" on the Tenth of Tevet,
אז דער "סמך מלך בבל כו' על ירושלים" בעשירי בטבת,
afterwards brought to "siege and distress",
האט דערנאך געבראכט צו "מצור ומצוק",
until from this resulted the continuation of events that caused the "fast of the fourth",
ביז אז דערפון איז ארויסגעקומען דער המשך המאורעות וואס האבן גורם געווען צו דעם "צום הרביעי",
"fast of the fifth" and "fast of the seventh").

And the reason for this
והטעם לזה
(why even "the king of Babylon encamped etc. against Jerusalem" brings "siege and distress" there,
(פארוואס אפילו "סמך מלך בבל כו' על ירושלים" ברענגט "מצור ומצוק" דארטן,
and therefore one may not allow it (even)):

Between "Babylon" and "Jerusalem" –
צווישן "בבל" און "ירושלים" –
it is entirely impossible that there
איז כלל ניט שייך אז עס
should be a proximity:
זאל זיין א סמיכות:
"Babylon" is the concept of the world –
"בבל" איז דער ענין פון וועלט –
in the world all matters are in a manner of "Babylon",
אין וועלט זיינען אלע ענינים אין אן אופן פון "בבל",
mixed up<sup>22</sup>,

one does not distinguish between them,
מ'קלייבט זיך ניט פאנאנדער,
because it is not clear –
דערפאר וואס ס'איז ניט קלאר –
what is holiness and what is permissible and what is a forbidden thing –
וואס עס איז קדושה און וואס ס'איז רשות און וואס איז א דבר האסור –
one must come to "Torah Ohr<sup>23</sup>" in order to distinguish between them;
מ'דארף אנקומען צו "תורה אור 23 " כדי צו פאנאנדערקלייבן זיך אין דעם;
"Jerusalem" is the concept of
"ירושלים" איז דער ענין פון
("yireh shaleim",
("ירא שלם",
the perfection of awe,
שלימות היראה,
particularly,
במיוחד,
and in general –
ובכלל –
the concept of)
דער ענין פון)
holiness,
קדושה,
connected with the Holy Land –
פארבונדן מיט ארץ הקודש –
Jerusalem is the capital city of the entire Land of Israel,
ירושלים איז די עיר הבירה פון גאנץ ארץ ישראל,
and connected with the holy nation,
און פארבונדן מיט דעם עם קדוש,
Israel:
ישראל:
Jerusalem unifies all Jews together,
ירושלים איז מאחד אלע אידן צוזאמען,
as it is written<sup>24</sup>

"the city that is united together". And it is also known that the entire Land of Israel was divided among the tribes,
"עיר שחוברה לה יחדיו". וכידוע אויך אז גאנץ ארץ ישראל נתחלקה לשבטים,
but not so Jerusalem,
משא"כ ירושלים,
the "city that is united together",
די "עיר שחוברה לה יחדיו",
"was not divided among the tribes<sup>25</sup>". And it can be said that therefore Jerusalem became the capital of the entire Land of Israel,
איז "לא נחלקה לשבטים 25 ". ויש לומר אז דערפאר איז ירושלים געווארן די בירה פון גאנץ ארץ ישראל,
and particularly that in the future Jerusalem will spread throughout the entire Land of Israel<sup>26</sup>.
ובפרט אז עתידה ירושלים שתתפשט בכל ארץ ישראל 26.
Therefore, any proximity between "Babylon" and "Jerusalem" is entirely impossible –
וואס דעריבער איז גאר ניט שייך קיין שום סמיכות צווישן "בבל" מיט "ירושלים" –
it is "to distinguish between holy and profane",
ס'איז "להבדיל בין קודש לחול",
"to distinguish between Israel and the nations"
"להבדיל בין ישראל לעמים"
(between Jerusalem and Babylon),
(צווישן ירושלים און בבל),
connected with "to distinguish between light and darkness<sup>27</sup>".
פארבונדן מיט "להבדיל בין אור לחושך 27 ".
And therefore,
און דעריבער,
if there is any proximity between Babylon and Jerusalem –
אויב עס ווערט עפעס א סמיכות צווישן בבל מיט ירושלים –
this itself becomes "siege and distress" to Jerusalem etc.
איז דאס גופא ווערט "מצור ומצוק" צו ירושלים וכו'.
And therefore one may not allow that there should be "the king of Babylon encamped against Jerusalem",
און דעריבער טאר מען ניט צולאזן אז עס זאל זיין "סמך מלך בבל על ירושלים",
one may in no way allow that "the king of Babylon" should come even in proximity to "Jerusalem",
מ'טאר בשום אופן ניט צולאזן אז "מלך בבל" זאל צוקומען אפילו בסמיכות צו "ירושלים",
And if he does come, G‑d forbid –
און אויב ער קומט יע צו ח"ו –
one must nullify it entirely.
דארף מען דאס אינגאנצן מבטל זיין.
And even though this is indeed "the king of Babylon",
ואע"פ אז דאס איז טאקע "מלך בבל",
and he has a minister above,
און ער האט א שר למעלה,
and he has in himself the superiority that "the earthly kingdom is like the heavenly kingdom<sup>28</sup>" and all the other superiorities of a king –
און ער האט אין זיך דעם עילוי וואס "מלכותא דארעא כעין מלכותא דרקיע 28 " און שאר כל העילויים פון א מלך –
One must remember, however, that this is "the king of Babylon",
דארף מען אבער געדענקען אז דאס איז "מלך בבל",
and this is "Jerusalem",
און דאס איז "ירושלים",
and between them there may not be even a proximity.
און צווישן זיי טאר ניט זיין קיין סמיכות אפילו.
Jews are now in the time of exile –
אידן געפינען זיך איצטער אין זמן הגלות –
the aforementioned lesson
איז די הוראה הנ"ל
(that one takes out from (the event that occurred on) the Tenth of Tevet)

is particularly relevant now in the time of exile:

A Jew must know,
א איד דארף וויסן,
that even though one finds oneself in "Bavel",
אז אע"פ וואס מ'געפינט זיך אין "בבל",
simply –
בפשטות –
one finds oneself in exile,
מ'געפינט זיך אין גלות,
in exile where "our signs we have not seen",
וואס אין גלות איז "אותותינו לא ראינו 29 ",

as known the saying of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, in the name of his father
כידוע דער פתגם פון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בשם אביו
(the Rebbe (the Rashab) of blessed memory),
(דער רבי (מהורש"ב) נ"ע) 30,
that "not by our will did we leave the Land of Israel and not by our powers will we return to the Land of Israel. Our Father, our King, may He be blessed, drove us into exile and He, may He be blessed, will redeem us, etc." –
אז "ניט מיט אונזער ווילען זיינען מיר אוועק פון ארץ ישראל און ניט מיט אונזערע כחות וועלן מיר צוריק קומען אין ארץ ישראל. אבינו מלכנו ית' האט אונז פארטריבן אין גלות והוא ית' וועט אונז אויסלייזען כו'" –
Together with this, however, one must know
צוזאמען דערמיט דארף מען אבער וויסן
(as he continues in the aforementioned saying),
(ווי ער איז ממשיך אין דער פתגם הנ"ל),
that "our souls were not driven into exile nor were they given over to the subjugation of the kingdoms, etc.",
אז "אונזערע נשמות האט מען אין גלות ניט פארטריבן און אין שעבוד מלכיות ניט איבערגעגעבן כו'",
therefore the soul
וואס דערפאר האט די נשמה
(the spiritual Jerusalem that exists in every Jew)
(די ירושלים הרוחנית וואס איז דא בא יעדער אידן)
has no connection and no attachment to exile,
קיין שייכות ניט און קיין סמיכות ניט צו גלות,
to "Bavel";
צו "בבל";
exile has no influence, heaven forbid,
גלות האט קיין השפעה ניט, ח"ו,
upon the soul,
אויף די נשמה,
and since they make their soul primary and their body secondary –
און וויבאלד אז עושים נשמתם עיקר וגופם טפל 31 –
all matters of the body become secondary to the soul,
ווערן אלע עניני הגוף טפל צו דער נשמה,
so that just as the soul
אז אזוי ווי די נשמה
(spiritual Jerusalem)
(ירושלים הרוחנית)
has absolutely no connection and no attachment to exile,
האט אינגאנצן קיין שייכות ניט און קיין סמיכות ניט צו גלות,
so too are the matters of his body in the manner of "Jerusalem",
אזוי אויך זיינען עניני הגוף שלו בבחי' "ירושלים",
so that they have absolutely no connection and no attachment to exile,
אז זיי האבן אינגאנצן קיין שייכות ניט און קיין סמיכות ניט צו גלות,
to "Bavel".

Simply, it means and this is expressed in the service of man –
בפשטות מיינט עס און דאס דריקט זיך אויס אין עבודת האדם –
that the main thing for a Jew in his service each and every day is –
אז דער עיקר ביי א אידן בעבודתו בכל יום ויום איז –
the spiritual Jerusalem within him
ירושלים הרוחנית שבו
(in general –
(בכללות –
his soul),
זיין נשמה),
the matter of "complete awe",
דער ענין פון "יראה שלם",
the perfection of awe,
שלימות היראה,
so that all his matters begin and are permeated with awe of Hashem,
אז אלע זיינע ענינים הויבן זיך אן און זיינען דורכגענומען מיט יראת השם,
until the perfection of awe;
ביז שלימות היראה;
and matters of the world,
און עניני העולם,
"Bavel",
"בבל",
are for him at a spiritual distance:

A Jew begins his day
א איד הויבט אן זיין טאג
(as he must begin it)
(ווי ער דארף אים אנהויבן)
with matters of "Jerusalem",
מיט ענינים פון "ירושלים",
awe of Hashem –
יראת השם –
with saying "Modeh ani lefanecha, etc.",
מיט זאגן "מודה אני לפניך כו'",
and afterwards he goes to the synagogue –
און דערנאך גייט ער לבית הכנסת –
he prays,
ער איז מתפלל,
and afterwards he goes "from the synagogue to the study hall" –
און דערנאך גייט ער "מבית הכנסת לבית המדרש 32 " –
he studies Torah,
ער לערנט תורה,
which teaches and shows him how he must conduct himself in all matters,
וואס לערנט און באווייזט אים ווי ער דארף זיך פירן אין אלע ענינים,
and he gives charity before prayer,
און ער גיט צדקה לפני התפלה,
during prayer and after prayer, etc.,
בתוך התפלה ולאחרי התפלה וכו',
and afterwards he goes to "conduct yourself with them in the way of the land".
און דערנאך גייט ער צו "הנהג בהם מנהג דרך ארץ 33 ".
These are the three pillars upon which the world stands that must be on a fast day,
וואס דאס זיינען די דריי עמודים שעליהם העולם עומד וואס עס דארף זיין ביום צום ותענית,
and especially in these times of ours
ובפרט בימינו אלו
(as discussed earlier):
(ווי גערעדט פריער):
in the synagogue –
אין בית הכנסת –
the matter of prayer
דער ענין התפלה
(service);
(עבודה);
in the study hall –
אין בית המדרש –
the matter of Torah;
דער ענין התורה;
and "conduct yourself with them in the way of the land" –
און "הנהג בהם מנהג דרך ארץ" –
the matter of charity,
דער ענין הצדקה,
for the intention in conducting business,
ווארום די כוונה אין הנהגת העסק,
"conduct yourself with them in the way of the land" is,
"הנהג בהם מנהג דרך ארץ" איז,
that he should be able to do charity with the matters with which he occupies himself –
אז ער זאל קענען טאן צדקה מיט די ענינים מיט וועלכע ער פארנעמט זיך –
through the refinement of the sparks that are found in the matters with which he occupies himself,
דורך בירור הניצוצות וואס געפינען זיך אין די ענינים מיט וועלכע ער פארנעמט זיך,
and primarily –
ובעיקר –
through charity in its simple sense,
דורך צדקה כפשוטה,
the matter of "distribute your bread to the hungry and bring the poor wanderer into your house".
דער ענין פון "פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית".
And also these three matters themselves begin
און אויך די דריי ענינים גופא הויבן זיך אן
(and consequently –
(און במילא –
are permeated) with
זיינען דורכגענומען) מיט
("Jerusalem")
("ירושלים")
awe of Hashem
יראת השם
(in addition to that which the entire day begins with "Modeh ani lefanecha, etc."):
(נוסף לזה וואס כל היום כולו הויבט זיך אן מיט "מודה אני לפניך כו'"):
As an introduction to prayer there must be the matter of fear of Heaven,
בהקדמה לתפלה דארף זיין דער ענין פון יראת שמים,
acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven –
קבלת עול מלכות שמים –
"one does not stand to pray except from a state of heaviness of head",
"אין עומדין להתפלל אלא מתוך כובד ראש 34 ",
from a state of submission and lowliness.
מתוך הכנעה ושפלות 35.
And in prayer itself, still before the silent prayer,
און אין תפלה גופא איז נאך קודם תפלת העמידה,
he recites the Shema,
זאגט ער קריאת שמע,
the first portion of the Shema
פ' ראשונה פון קריאת שמע
("Shema Yisrael...
("שמע ישראל..
") –
36 ") –
"acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of Heaven",
קבלת עול מלכות שמים",
and the second portion of the Shema –
און פ' שני' פון קריאת שמע –
acceptance of the yoke of Torah and commandments
קבלת עול תורה ומצוות 37
(all –

fear of Heaven);
יראת שמים);
Afterwards, also in the study of Torah –
דערנאך אויך אין לימוד התורה –
there must be the introduction of "let my soul be as dust to all",
דארף זיין דער הקדמה פון "נפשי כעפר לכל תהי'" 38,
and only then is "open my heart to Your Torah";
און ערשט דערנאך איז "פתח לבי בתורתך 38 ";
and afterwards in "conduct yourself with them in the way of the land" –
און דערנאך אין "הנהג בהם מנהג דרך ארץ" –
before he occupies himself with matters of Zevulun,
איז איידער ער פארנעמט זיך מיט עניני זבולון 39,
the way of the land in its simple sense,
דרך ארץ כפשוטה,
the work of commerce,
עבודת המסחר,
there must be for him the introduction,
דארף ביי אים זיין די הקדמה,
that he knows that what he is about to do is not "my power and the might of my hand have made me this wealth"
אז ער ווייסט אז דאס וואס ער גייט טאן איז ניט "כחי ועוצם ידי עשה לי את החיל הזה 40 "
Even though he knows that he will certainly succeed in what he does,
אע"פ וואס ער ווייסט אז זיכער וועט ער מצליח זיין אין דעם וואס ער טוט,
because he has the promise in the verse "And the L-rd your G-d will bless you in all that you do,"
ווארום ער האט די הבטחה אין פסוק 41 "וברכך ה' אלקיך בכל אשר תעשה",
and even though there must be the "that you do" –
און אע"פ וואס עס דארף זיין דער "תעשה" –
he knows, however, that it is not "my power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth,"
ווייסט ער אבער אז ס'איז ניט "כחי ועוצם ידי עשה לי את החיל הזה",
to the point that this is a negative commandment that one should not think that "my power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth"
ביז אז דאס איז א מצות לא תעשה אז מ'זאל ניט טראכטן אז "כחי ועוצם ידי עשה לי את החיל הזה"
(as the SeMaG says).

And only after he has all these matters,
און ערשט דערנאך ווי ער האט די אלע ענינים,
all begun and conducted with fear of Heaven
אלע אנגעהויבן און דורכגענומען מיט יראת השם
("Jerusalem") –
("ירושלים") –
does the tone begin for him in the matters of "Babylon,"
הויבט זיך ביי אים אן דער טאן אין די ענינים פון "בבל",
the worldly matters.
די עניני העולם.
And furthermore:
און נאכמער:
Also then, when he has to do with matters of "Babylon,"
אויך דעמולט ווען ער האט צו טאן מיט עניני "בבל",
worldly matters –
עניני העולם –
he is essentially in a distant place from them spiritually,
איז ער בעצם בריחוק מקום מהם ברוחניות,
because he does them "without a heart and a heart":
ווארום ער טוט זיי "בלא לב ולב 43 ":
it is for him only like "that you do,"
ס'איז ביי אים מערניט ווי "אשר תעשה",
he does them only with his power of action,
ער טוט זיי נאר מיט זיין כח העשי',
but his wisdom and his intellect,
אבער זיין חכמה און זיין שכל,
and his ChaBa"D and the emotions of the heart,
און חב"ד שלו און מדות שבלב,
his "heart and heart" –
זיין "לב ולב" –
lie in matters of "the Land of Israel" and of "Jerusalem,"
ליגן אין ענינים פון "ארץ ישראל" און פון "ירושלים",
and between them,
און צווישן זיי,
between the matters of "Babylon,"
צווישן די עניני "בבל",
worldly matters,
עניני עולם,
and the matters of "the Land of Israel" and "Jerusalem"
מיט עניני "ארץ ישראל" און "ירושלים"
(in which he lies) –
(וואס אין דעם ליגט ער) –
there is no proximity or connection.
איז ניטא קיין סמיכות און שייכות.
What this then does to a Jew,
וואס דעמולט טוט אויף א איד,
that not only is he protected that the world
אז ניט נאר וואס ער איז באווארנט אז וועלט
("Babylon" and "the king of Babylon")
("בבל" און "מלך בבל")
has no influence on him,
האט אויף אים ניט קיין השפעה,
even not in a manner of "the king of Babylon leaned" –
אפילו ניט אין אן אופן פון "סמך מלך בבל" –
but on the contrary:
נאר אדרבה:
he makes the world a dwelling place for the Omnipresent, blessed be He, in the lower realms –
ער מאכט פון דער וועלט א דירה לו ית' בתחתונים –
he breaks through the partition and the separation between "Jerusalem" and "Babylon,"
ער איז פורץ די מחיצה און די הבדלה צווישן "ירושלים" און "בבל",
he, however, breaks through for good,
ער איז דאס אבער פורץ לטובה,
in a manner that in the future the Land of Israel will spread to all the lands through this preparation,
אין אן אופן אז עס ווערט עתידה ארץ ישראל שתתפשט בכל הארצות דורך דער הקדמה,
and together with this –
און צוזאמען מיט דעם –
in the future Jerusalem will spread throughout all the Land of Israel,
עתידה ירושלים שתתפשט בכל ארץ ישראל,
so that he draws down the matter of "the Land of Israel,"
אז ער איז ממשיך דעם ענין פון "ארץ ישראל",
in preparation and together with the matter of "Jerusalem"
בהקדמה וביחד מיט דער ענין פון "ירושלים"
(fear of Heaven)
(יראת שמים)
which is present with him,
וואס איז ביי אים דא,
also in "all the lands,"
אויך אין "כל הארצות",
in "Babylon" and in the entire world
אין "בבל" און בכל העולם כולו
(in contrast to what was "Babylon leaned upon Jerusalem" on the Tenth of Tevet and the subsequent events,
(לעומת זה וואס ס'איז געווען "סמך בבל על ירושלים" בעשירי בטבת און דער המשך מאורעות לאח"ז,
that "Babylon" had breached "Jerusalem" not for good).
אז "בבל" האט פורץ געווען "ירושלים" ניט לטובה).

A Jew begins the day with "Jerusalem,"

fear of Heaven,

And then,
און דעמולט,
when he afterwards goes out,
ווען ער גייט דערנאך ארויס,
ostensibly,

from the four cubits of prayer and from the four cubits of Torah etc. and goes to do in the world,
פון די ד' אמות של תפלה און פון די ד' אמות של תורה כו' און גייט טאן אין וועלט,
in "Babylon" –
אין "בבל" –
he does not go "out" from them
גייט ער ניט "ארויס" פון זיי
(from the four cubits of prayer and the four cubits of Torah) G-d forbid,
(פון די ד' אמות של תפלה און ד' אמות של תורה) ח"ו,
rather he takes them with him,
נאר ער נעמט זיי מיט,
and they transform the world,
און זיי מאכן איבער די וועלט,
"Babylon,"
"בבל",
so that the world should become not world, not
אז די וועלט זאל ווערן אויס וועלט, אויס
(world from the term)
(עולם מלשון)
concealment and hiding,
העלם והסתר 44,
but rather it becomes a dwelling place for the Omnipresent, blessed be He, in the lower realms.

The above discussion regarding the lesson from this "to the tenth"

is a matter that is equal from the Tenth of Tevet in all years;

on the day of the week on which the Tenth of Tevet falls in this year, and (b)
אין דעם יום בשבוע אין וועלכן עשירי בטבת קומט אויס בשנה זו, און (ב)
on which Torah portion the Tenth of Tevet falls in this year.

In the determination of this year, the Tenth of Tevet falls (a)

on the third day of the week,

the day on which "it is good" was doubled, and (b)

in the week

as is known from the teaching of the Alter Rebbe,

with the weekly portion and the portion of the day from the Torah portion of the week

The matter that the Tenth of Tevet falls in the determination of the year on the third day of the week –

is a unique matter connected with this entire year,

as we see that the entire year is conducted with the matter of the third day:

that this year there is an emphasis on the matter of the third day on which "it was good" was doubled –

and consequently several primary matters occur during the year on the third day of the week,

has its specific lesson and its specific directive in the service of man to his Maker and in the utilization of man for his Maker,
האט זיין לימוד מיוחד און זיין הוראה מיוחדת בעבודת האדם לקונו ובשימוש האדם לקונו,
as discussed and explained in many places –
כמדובר ומבואר בכ"מ –
but the common denominator among them all
אבער דער צד השווה בין כולם
(this year) is,
(בשנה זו) איז,
that they all occur on the third day of the week,
אז זיי קומען אלע אויס ביום השלישי בשבוע,
by virtue of which there is a lesson and a directive common to them all.
וואס מצד דעם איז דא א לימוד און א הוראה שווה לכולם.
And since also the Tenth of Tevet occurs in the fixed calendar of this year on the third day of the week –
און וויבאלד אז אויך עשירי בטבת קומט אויס בקביעות שנה זו ביום השלישי בשבוע –
there is also this directive for the Tenth of Tevet.
איז אויך דא די הוראה פאר עשירי בטבת.
The point of the directive of the third day on which "it was good" was doubled:
נקודת ההוראה פון יום השלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב:
The third day on which "it was good" was doubled is connected with "good for heaven and good for the creations".
יום השלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב איז פארבונדן מיט "טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות 54 ".
And as discussed many times,
וכמדובר כמ"פ,
that the simple meaning of the third day on which "it was good" was doubled,
אז דער פשט אין יום השלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב,
"good for heaven and good for the creations",
"טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות",
is not,
איז ניט,
that "good for heaven" and "good for the creations"
אז "טוב לשמים" און "טוב לבריות"
(the two (doubled) "good")
(די צוויי (כפל) טוב)
are two separate things that he does on that day,
זיינען צוויי באזונדערע זאכן וואס ער טוט אין דעם טאג,
that part of the day he does in "good for heaven" and part of the day in "good for the creations" –
אז א חלק פון טאג טוט ער אין "טוב לשמים" און א חלק פון טאג אין "טוב לבריות" –
rather that every moment of the day is a moment of the day on which "it was good" was doubled,
נאר אז יעדער רגע פון טאג איז א רגע פון טאג וואס הוכפל בו כי טוב,
"good for heaven and good for the creations".
"טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות".
From this it is understood,
איז דערפון פארשטאנדיק,
that the directive of the third day on which "it was good" was doubled is –
אז די הוראה פון יום השלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב איז –
that in every action that he does there is "good for heaven" and "good for the creations",
אז אין יעדער מעשה וואס ער טוט איז דא "טוב לשמים" און "טוב לבריות",
to the extent that they are both equally,
ביז אז זיי זיינען ביידע בשווה,
in the same action in the same moment.

That the matter
וואס דער ענין
(that in the service of man there should be "good for heaven
(אז אין עבודת האדם זאל זיין "טוב לשמים
and "good for the creations" together) –
און "טוב לבריות" צוזאמען) –
is connected and can be understood more through studying in depth the appropriate chapter thirty-two in Tanya,
איז פארבונדן און מ'קען דאס פארשטיין מערניט דורך לערנען בעיון המתאים פרק לב אין תניא,
where he explains

(and makes it understandable also simply)

that there must be and there can be love also for "creations",

through knowing that "the Father of them all is one, and therefore all Jews are called real brothers from the aspect of the root of their soul in the one G‑d, etc." –

the matter of "good for heaven" and "good for the creations" together.

That here the precise wording is "good for heaven and good for the creations"
וואס דא איז דער דיוק "טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות"
(that one must have love for "creations" ("good for the creations") together with "good for heaven"),
(אז מ'דארף האבן אהבה צו "בריות" ("טוב לבריות") צוזאמען מיט "טוב לשמים"),
the language is not "good for heaven and good for human beings",

as in the example of "the heavens are heavens for the L‑rd and the earth He gave to human beings" –

because "human beings",

have at least the advantage of "human" from the term "earth for the supernal one";

I want to emphasize, however, that there must be love even for the lowest type,

who are called "mere creatures",

those who are "distant from the Torah of Hashem and His service, and therefore are called mere creatures",

i.e., their only virtue is that they were created by the Most High,

that You made me",

his only virtue is that he was created by the Most High,

and this must go together

The lesson from this in actual deed,

for the deed is the main thing:

There must be in actuality "Share your bread with the hungry, and bring the poor wanderers into your house",

and "When you see the naked, cover him" –

the matter of "good to creatures",

And especially according to what is stated in Tana D'vei Eliyahu Rabbah,
און בפרט לויט ווי עס שטייט אין תנא דבי אליהו רבה 60,
that "the hungry" and "the poor" and "the naked" refers to Jews who
אז "לרעב" און "עניים" און "ערום" גייט עס אויף אידן וואס
are "hungry" and "poor" and "naked" of Torah and mitzvos,
זיינען "רעבים" און "עניים" און "ערומים" פון תורה ומצוות,
"There is no hunger but hunger for words of Torah, and no bread but words of Torah",
"אין רעב אלא הרעב מן דברי תורה ואין לחם אלא דברי תורה",
"There is no naked person in Israel except one who has no Torah and mitzvos",
"אין לך ערום בישראל אלא מי שאין בו תורה ומצוות",
i.e., "mere creatures" as he interprets in Tanya –
ד.ה. "בריות בעלמא" ווי ער טייטשט אין תניא –
"those distant from the Torah of Hashem and His service" –

There must be "Share your bread with the hungry, and bring the poor wanderers into your house" and "When you see the naked, cover him":

One must give and provide the Jews with words of Torah
מ'דארף געבן און באזארגן די אידן מיט דברי תורה
("bread")
("לחם")
and mitzvos
און מצוות
("cover him" with garments);
("וכסיתו" מיט לבושים);
"If you see a person who has no words of Torah, bring him into your house and teach him the Shema and prayer, and teach him a verse each day or a halachah, and urge him to perform mitzvos."
"אם ראית אדם שאין בו דברי תורה הכניסוה לביתך וילמדוה קריאת שמע ותפלה וילמדוה פסוק א' בכל יום או הלכה וזרזהו במצוות".
This is simply the matter of spreading Judaism wherever one can reach,
וואס דאס איז בפשטות דער ענין פון הפצת היהדות בכל מקום שידו מגעת,
and all the more so the spreading of the soul of Judaism,
ועאכו"כ הפצה פון דער נשמה פון יהדות,
the inner dimension of Judaism,
פנימיות היהדות,
the inner dimension of the Torah –
פנימיות התורה –
the matter of "May your springs spread outward".
דער ענין פון "יפוצו מעינותיך חוצה".
Based on this, the connection is understood between the lesson derived from the third day, which was doubled with "it was good", and the fast of the Tenth of Teves,
עפ"ז איז פארשטאנדיק די שייכות פון דער הוראה וואס מ'נעמט ארויס פון יום השלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב מיט דעם צום פון עשירי בטבת,
which occurs this year on the third day of the week:

And when the fast of the Tenth of Teves occurs on the third day of the week –

there comes an added emphasis and empowerment for the service –
קומט צו א תוספות הדגשה און נתינת כח אויף דער עבודה –
for the third day, which was doubled with "it was good", teaches and gives power that there should be "good to Heaven" together with "good to creatures" –
ווארום יום השלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב לערנט און גיט כח אז ס'זאל זיין "טוב לשמים" צוזאמען מיט "טוב לבריות" –
the matter of "Share your bread with the hungry, and bring the poor wanderers into your house etc.",
דער ענין פון "פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית גו'",
love of Israel even for those who are in the category of "mere creatures",
אהבת ישראל אויך צו די וואס זיינען בבחי' "בריות בעלמא",
"poor" etc.
"עניים" כו'.
Upon this, however, the question arises:
אויף דעם ווערט אבער די שאלה:
The service of "Share your bread with the hungry, and bring the poor wanderers into your house etc.",
די עבודה פון "פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית גו'",
"good to creatures"
"טוב לבריות"
(together with "good to Heaven") –
(צוזאמען מיט "טוב לשמים") –
is seemingly a most difficult service;
איז לכאורה אן עבודה קשה ביותר;
and along with this, it is said that "Love your fellow as yourself",
און צוזאמען דערמיט זאגט מען אז "ואהבת לרעך כמוך 61 ",
"good to Heaven and good to creatures",
"טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות",
is incumbent upon every Jew,
מאנט מען בא יעדן אידן,
from the smallest to the greatest –
מקטן ועד גדול –
how do these two things reconcile?!
היינט ווי שטימען די ביידע זאכן?!
It will be understood by first explaining this,
וועט מען עס פארשטיין בהקדם דעם ביאור בזה,
that although it is stated in Isaiah
אז כאטש עס שטייט אין ישעי'
(as discussed earlier)
(ווי מ'האט פריער גערעדט)
that the primary and true essence of a fast is not that it is a "day of afflicting one's soul" and "bowing one's head like a bulrush, and spreading sackcloth and ashes",
אז דער עיקר און אמת'ער ענין פון א צום איז ניט דאס וואס ער איז א "יום ענות אדם נפשו" און "הלכף כאגמן ראשו ושק ואפר יציע",
but rather it should be "Share your bread with the hungry etc." –
נאר עס זאל זיין "פרס לרעב לחמך גו'" –
nevertheless, the matter of affliction on a fast day
איז אבער דער ענין פון עינוי ביום צום
("a day of afflicting one's soul etc.")
("יום ענות אדם נפשו גו'")
is a positive commandment from the Torah on Yom Kippur
א מצות עשה מן התורה ביוהכ"פ
(the verses in Isaiah are recited in the haftarah of Yom Kippur),
(וואס די פסוקים אין ישעי' זאגט מען אין דער הפטורה פון יוהכ"פ),
and likewise it is a commandment in the four fasts which are from the words of the Prophets –
ועד"ז איז דאס אויך א מצוה אין די ד' צומות וואס זיינען מדברי קבלה –
and on the contrary –
ואדרבה –
"The words of the Sages are more beloved than the words of the Torah" –
"חביבין דברי סופרין מדברי תורה 62 " –
it is certain that on a fast day there must be the matter of "afflicting one's soul" and "bowing one's head like a bulrush etc.",
איז א זיכערע זאך אז עס דארף זיין ביום צום דער ענין פון "ענות אדם נפשו" און "הלכף כאגמן ראשו גו'",
even though the main thing is "Share your bread with the hungry etc.",
כאטש דער עיקר איז "פרס לרעב לחמך גו'",
an addition with greater strength and vigor in acts of kindness
א תוספות ביתר שאת ויתר עוז אין גמילות חסדים
(and in Torah and mitzvos in general).
(און אין תומ"צ בכלל).
And the explanation of this –
והביאור בזה –
simply:
בפשטות:
In order that one should be able to engage in "Distribute your bread to the hungry and bring the wretched poor into your house" and "When you see the naked, clothe him",
בכדי אז איינער זאל קענען טאן אין "פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית" און "כי תראה ערום וכסיתו",
"Be good to creatures",
"טוב לבריות",
although this is a very low level relative to his level –
כאטש דאס איז א דרגא תחתונה ביותר לגבי דרגתו –
he must have the introduction of "Bowing his head like a bulrush"
דארף ביי אים זיין די הקדמה פון "הלכף כאגמן ראשו"
(and "Afflicting one's soul",
(און "ענות אדם נפשו",
the general concept of a fast),
דער כללות ענין פון א תענית),
that he stands in humility and lowliness and the concept of pride is absolutely negated in him,
אז ער שטייט בהכנעה ושפלות און ביי אים איז מושלל בתכלית דער ענין הגאוה,
"Not even a trace of it".
"לא מינה ולא מקצתה 63 ".
When he will become a true Torah scholar –
ווען ער וועט ווערן א תלמיד חכם באמת –
then the question will arise whether he needs "the eighth of the eighth";
דעמולט וועט ווערן די שאלה צי ביי אים דארף זיין "שמיני 63 שבשמינית 64 ";
but before he is certain that he has had "I toiled and found",
אבער איידער ער איז זיכער אז ביי אים איז געווען "יגעתי ומצאתי 65 ",
and "Open my heart to Your Torah",
און "פתח לבי בתורתך",
he must have "And let my soul be like dust to all",
דארף ביי אים זיין "ונפשי כעפר לכל תהי'",
humility and lowliness and absolute negation of the concept of pride,
הכנעה ושפלות און שלילה בתכלית פון ענין הגאוה,
"Not even a trace of it".
"לא מינה ולא מקצתה".
What this is simply is the concept of a fast,
וואס דאס איז בפשטות דער ענין פון א תענית,
that through the fact that a person fasts and afflicts himself –
אז דורך דעם וואס א מענטש פאסט און ער איז זיך מענה –
it effects in him a nullification and humility and lowliness,
פועל'ט עס אויף אים א ביטול און הכנעה ושפלות,
absolute negation of pride, – which
שלילה בתכלית פון גאוה, – וואס
then he can more easily do
דעמולט קען ער גרינגער טאן
(in the essential and true purpose of a fast –)
(אין דעם עיקר און אמת'ן תכלית פון א צום –)
the service of "Be good to creatures",
די עבודה פון "טוב לבריות",
"Distribute your bread to the hungry etc.".
"פרס לרעב לחמך גו'".
And furthermore:
און נאכמער:
The very service of nullification,
די עצם עבודה פון ביטול,
"Bowing his head like a bulrush"
"הלכף כאגמון ראשו"
(which exists on a fast day and fast),
(וואס איז דא אין א יום צום ותענית),
in the aspect of "small" in service,
בחי' "קטן" בעבודה,
and the result thereof,
און די תוצאה דערפון,
that he engages in "Be good to creatures",
אז ער טוט אין "טוב לבריות",
"Distribute your bread to the hungry etc.",
"פרס לרעב לחמך גו'",
with those who are in the aspect of "small" in their service –
מיט די וואס זיינען בבחי' "קטן" בעבודתם –
is a vessel that receives Essence and Being.
איז א כלי וואס נעמט עצמות ומהות.
As it says earlier in Isaiah
ווי עס שטייט פריער אין ישעי' 66
(which is said in the haftarah of Yom Kippur)
(וואס מ'זאגט אין די הפטורה פון יוהכ"פ)
"High and exalted, dwelling eternally, and holy is His name, I dwell in the high and holy place, and with the contrite and lowly of spirit etc.",
"רם ונשא שוכן עד וקדוש שמו מרום וקדוש אשכון ואת דכא ושפל רוח גו'",
i.e., that the Supreme One,
ד.ה. אז דער אויבערשטער,
Essence and Being,
עצמות ומהות,
dwells with those who are in the aspect of "contrite and lowly of spirit".
איז שוכן בא די וואס זיינען בבחי' "דכא ושפל רוח 67 ".
Knowing this –
וואס וויסנדיק דאס –
gives further taste and strength to engage in the service of "Be good to creatures",
גיט דאס נאכמער טעם און כח אויף טאן אין דער עבודה פון "טוב לבריות",
"Distribute your bread to the hungry etc.".
"פרס לרעב לחמך גו'".
And therefore specifically a fast day and fast –
און דעריבער איז דוקא א יום צום ותענית –
is a "day of favor to God",
א "יום רצון לה' 68 ",
and specifically through a fast day and fast,
און דוקא דורך א יום צום ותענית,
"a day of afflicting one's soul",
"יום ענות אדם נפשו",
and when there is "Bowing his head like a bulrush etc." –
און ווען ס'איז "הלכף כאגמון ראשו גו'" –
there comes an addition with greater vigor and strength in the service of Torah and mitzvot in general –
קומט צו א הוספה ביתר שאת ויתר עוז אין דער עבודה פון תורה ומצוות בכלל –
the three pillars upon which the world stands,
די דריי עמודים שעליהם העולם עומד,
Torah, service, and acts of kindness
תורה עבודה וגמילות חסדים
(as above section 1),
(כנ"ל ס"א),
and as follows.

The explanation of this will be understood according to what is explained in the Chumash lesson of the Tenth of Tevet in the fixed calendar of this year,
דעם ביאור בזה וועט מען פארשטיין ע"פ המבואר אין דעם שיעור חומש פון עשירי בטבת בקביעות שנה זו,

What this

(that the Tenth of Tevet is connected in this year with the Chumash lesson)

gives an additional strength that makes it even easier to carry out the service:
גיט א תוספות כח וואס מאכט נאך לייכטער צו דורכפירן די עבודה:
In the Chumash lesson from second to third
אין דעם שיעור חומש פון שני ביז שלישי
(in Parshat Vayechi)
(אין פ' ויחי)
it discusses that Joseph brought his two sons,
רעדט זיך וועגן דעם אז יוסף האט געבראכט זיינע צוויי זין,
Manasseh and Ephraim,
מנשה און אפרים,
to Jacob to bless them:
צו יעקב'ן ער זאל זיי בענטשן:
"And Joseph took both of them, Ephraim in his right hand from Israel's left, and Manasseh in his left hand from Israel's right, and brought them near to him",
"ויקח יוסף את שניהם את אפרים בימינו משמאל ישראל ואת מנשה בשמאלו מימין ישראל ויגש אליו 69 ",
because Joseph wanted Jacob to bless Manasseh, who was
ווארום יוסף האט געוואלט אז יעקב זאל בענטשן מנשה'ן וואס איז געווען
the firstborn,
דער בכור,
with his right hand.
מיט ידו הימנית.
But in practice it was "And Israel stretched out his right hand and placed it on Ephraim's head, though he was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh's head, guiding his hands deliberately, for Manasseh was the firstborn".
אבער בפועל איז געווען "וישלח ישראל את ימינו וישת על ראש אפרים והוא הצעיר ואת שמאלו על ראש מנשה שכל את ידיו כי מנשה הבכור 70 ".
Afterwards begins the Chumash lesson of today
דערנאך הויבט זיך אן דער שיעור חומש פון היינטיקן טאג
(the Tenth of Tevet),
(עשירי בטבת),
from third –

"And Joseph saw that his father placed his right hand on Ephraim's head, and it was displeasing in his eyes,
"וירא יוסף כי ישית אביו יד ימינו על ראש אפרים וירע בעיניו,
and he supported his father's hand to remove it from Ephraim's head onto Manasseh's head. And Joseph said to his father, 'Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn; place your right hand on his head.'"
ויתמוך יד אביו להסיר אותה מעל ראש אפרים על ראש מנשה. ויאמר יוסף אל אביו לא כן אבי כי זה הבכור שים ימינך על ראשו 71."
"But his father refused and said, 'I know, my son, I know; he too will become a people, and he too will be great,
"וימאן אביו ויאמר ידעתי בני ידעתי גם הוא יהי' לעם וגם הוא יגדל,
but his younger brother will be greater than he, and his descendants will become a multitude of nations.' And he blessed them on that day..
ואולם אחיו הקטן יגדל ממנו וזרעו יהי' מלא הגוים. ויברכם ביום ההוא..
placing Ephraim before Manasseh."
וישם את אפרים לפני מנשה 72."
That is:

Joseph held that the blessing of Manasseh should be before Ephraim and Jacob's right hand should be on Manasseh's head,

and Jacob said "I know, my son, I know" –
און יעקב האט געזאגט "ידעתי בני ידעתי" –
Jacob also knows of the approach that Manasseh comes first
אויך יעקב ווייסט פון דער שיטה אז מנשה קומט פריער
(because he is the firstborn),
(דערפאר וואס ער איז דער בכור),
but "his younger brother will be greater than he",
אבער "אחיו הקטן יגדל ממנו",
therefore the younger must come first. And so it was in practice.
דעריבער דארף דער קטן קומען פריער. און אזוי איז געווען בפועל.
In this there are several lessons. One of them,
אין דעם זיינען פאראן כמה הוראות. איינע פון זיי,
which is a simple lesson for small and great alike:

based on this which is understood by itself that both the approach of Joseph and the approach of Jacob are upheld according to the Torah:
על יסוד זה וואס ס'איז מובן מעצמו אז סיי שיטת יוסף און סיי שיטת יעקב זיינען אויסגעהאלטן ע"פ תורה:
Jacob's blessing to Joseph and his sons was a blessing of increase –
ברכת יעקב צו יוסף ובניו איז געווען א ברכת הריבוי –
"and let them multiply abundantly in the midst of the land."
"וידגו לרוב בקרב הארץ 74 ".
"Joseph thought that it is more fitting to attribute the blessing of increase to the firstborn son because to him a double portion
"יוסף חשב שיותר ראוי לתלות ברכת הריבוי בבן הבכור כי אליו פי שנים
(as it is stated in the Torah)

double in inheritance, therefore also the blessing of increase is most fitting for him, it must be 'the firstborn according to his birthright,'

and all the more so that the firstborn should not come after the younger,
ועאכו"כ אז דער בכור דארף ניט קומען נאכן צעיר,

Jacob agreed to this and said "I know, my son, I know,"

I know that Manasseh is the firstborn
איך ווייס אז מנשה איז דער בכור
(and from this perspective a 'double portion' should come to him) –

"but nevertheless his younger brother will be greater than him
"אבל מ"מ אחיו הקטן יגדל ממנו
(and the answer to the claim of 'the firstborn according to his birthright' is:)

for the Holy One, blessed be He, chooses most in the small ones, and any person who has in him an aspect of smallness, then most does the Holy One, blessed be He, elevate him to set him to thousands of myriads, as it is said regarding the Jews in general, 'not because you are more numerous than all the peoples did the Lord desire you, for you are the fewest,' and in this vein Jacob is 'small is he' and 'David is the small one,'

which applies to all Jews, that they are in the aspect of 'small,' and it is written 'the small one will become a thousand and the young one a mighty nation etc.,'

and therefore the "verdict"

that Ephraim

comes before Manasseh,

"and he placed Ephraim before Manasseh,"

and Jacob's right hand was on Ephraim's head.

that which a certain matter is a "small"

specifically the small one is a vessel for the Essence and Being,

and specifically he receives the greater blessings etc.
און דוקא ער באקומט די גרעסערע ברכות וכו'.
As it was with Ephraim and Manasseh:
ווי דאס איז געווען בא אפרים ומנשה:
even though Ephraim was the smaller one –
אע"פ וואס אפרים איז געווען דער קטן –
specifically he was the

vessel for Jacob's blessings,

and he comes first in Jacob's blessing,
און ער קומט פריער אין ברכת יעקב,
and although Manasseh receives the blessing,

"he also will become a people and he also will be great,"
"גם הוא יהי' לעם וגם הוא יגדל",
nevertheless "his younger brother will be greater than him."

The matter in the service of man:

In Torah:

specifically through the conduct of "let my soul be like dust to all,"
דוקא דורך דער הנהגה פון "נפשי כעפר לכל תהי'",
that he stands in the aspect of self-nullification,
אז ער שטייט בבחי' ביטול,
he is a "small one,"

even to the extent of "like dust" –
ביז אין אן אופן פון "כעפר" –
one is a vessel and receives "open my heart to Your Torah."

In prayer:

specifically through "one should not stand to pray except from a state of heaviness of head,"
דוקא דורך "אין עומדין להתפלל אלא מתוך כובד ראש",
from a state of submission and lowliness
מתוך הכנעה ושפלות
(that he is in himself a "small one") –

he brings about through his prayer that all
טוט ער אויף ע"י תפלתו אז עס זאל נמשך ווערן אלע
blessings be drawn down even to an aspect that is above all measure and limitation.

According to the explanation in the distinction between prayer and blessing,
ע"ד* המבואר אין דעם חילוק צווישן תפלה און ברכה 82,
that prayer makes "may it be His will,"
אז תפלה מאכט "יהי רצון",
that a new will is created,
אז ס'ווערט א רצון חדש,
an entirely new drawing down,
א המשכה חדשה לגמרי,
above all measure and limitation,
למעלה מכל מדידה והגבלה,
more than a blessing which brings about that it be drawn down only from the root and source
מער ווי ברכה וואס טוט אויף אז עס זאל נמשך ווערן נאר פון דער שרש ומקור
(of the one being blessed),

as it is said "each man according to his blessing he blessed them,"

The lesson from this for each one in his service in general:

A Jew must learn from the conduct of Jacob –
א איד דארף זיך אפלערנען פון הנהגת יעקב –
for every Jew is from the seed of Jacob,
ווארום יעדער איד איז פון זרע יעקב,
and "his seed lives" through that which each one conducts himself as Jacob conducted himself,
און "זרעו בחיים 84 " דורך דעם וואס יעדערער פירט זיך ווי יעקב האט זיך געפירט,
whereby he brings about that "he also
וואס דעמולט טוט ער אויף אז עס זאל זיין "אף הוא

that just as Jacob gave precedence to Ephraim before Manasseh because of his superiority in the aspect of smallness –

so does a Jew give precedence to the matter of smallness within him before the matter of greatness within him:

The matter of greatness within him is that which he is a student of Torah and fulfills commandments,
דער ענין הגדלות שבו איז דאס וואס ער איז א לומד תורה און מקיים מצוות,
even to the extent of "mehadrin from mehadrin"

(as was done in the days of Chanukah);

which is a vessel that receives essence and being,

And this is then drawn down also into the revelations within him –
און דאס ווערט דערנאך נמשך אויך אין די גילויים שבו –
that this draws down great and abundant success in his study of Torah,
אז דאס איז ממשיך הצלחה רבה ומרובה אין זיין לימוד התורה,
in his fulfillment of the commandments,
אין זיין קיום המצוות,
including his service of prayer,
כולל זיין עבודת התפלה,
and in his children, life, and ample sustenance, and in all of them ample so that it becomes

more ample than it was before,

above all measure and limitation.

And likewise it is also understandable regarding a fast,

that through the nullification and submission and lowliness that a fast brings about

one receives essence and being,
נעמט מען עצמות ומהות,
and this is then drawn down into revelations,

that this adds with greater strength and vigor in the service of Torah and commandments,

in the three pillars upon which "the world stands" and "the world exists",

Torah, service, and acts of kindness

"which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow" is simply the matter that Jacob conquered the land of the Amorite

(and this later became the inheritance of Ephraim and Menashe in the land of Israel),

for the Amorite is the strongest of all the seven nations,

consequently it is understandable that what Jacob conquered includes within itself

In spirituality, the matters and in spiritual service:

that the seven nations "the Canaanite, the Amorite etc." are the seven evil character traits that are opposite corresponding to the seven holy character traits of the heart. And the main and most difficult evil trait and husk –

The matter of conquering the seven nations

(which begins from the main and most difficult husk –

is the service of

a Jew to conquer and refine the seven evil character traits and to make from them holiness,
א אידן צו כובש זיין און מברר זיין די ז' מדות רעות און מאכן דערפון קדושה,
so that the seven character traits of his heart should be seven holy character traits. And since "the heart follows all the limbs" –
אז די ז' מדות שבלב שלו זאלן זיין ז' מדות קדושות. און וויבאלד אז "לבא פליג לכל שייפין 90 " –
he conducts himself automatically as is proper,
פירט ער זיך בדרך ממילא ווי ס'דארף צו זיין,
and from the land of the seven nations he transforms it so that it should be "the land of Israel",
און פון ארץ שבעה אומות מאכט ער איבער אז עס זאל זיין "ארץ ישראל",
"a land that desires to do the will of its Master".
"ארץ שרצתה לעשות רצון קונה 91 ".
In order to accomplish this, a Jew must have the "with my sword and with my bow",
בכדי דאס צו אויפטאן דארף א איד האבן דעם "בחרבי ובקשתי",
the "with my prayer and with my supplication"
דעם "בצלותי ובבעותי
(as he translates it in Targum),
(ווי ער טייטשט עס אפ אין תרגום),
the matter of the service of prayer,

and in both ways –

"with my prayer" and "with my supplication",

"with my sword" and "with my bow",

as Chassidus explains this at length

The difference between a sword and a bow simply is:

with a sword one can reach and kill only an enemy who is near and revealed,

but not an enemy who is far and hidden;
אבער ניט קיין אויב הרחוק און הנסתר;
however, with a bow one can reach and kill an enemy who is far and hidden,

whom one does not see,
וואס מ'זעט אים ניט,
he is somewhere hidden,
ער איז ערגעץ וואו באהאלטן,
by shooting with the bow and the arrow reaches the far place and the hidden place where the enemy is located.
דורך דעם וואס מ'שיסט מיטן קשת און דער חץ דערגרייכט למקום רחוק ולמקום הנסתר וואו עס געפינט זיך דער אויב.
But how can one reach with the bow the far enemy
אבער ווי קען מען דערגרייכן מיטן קשת דעם אויב הרחוק
(and the hidden one) –

this is specifically by drawing the string of the bow downward, downward,
איז דאס דוקא דורך דעם וואס מ'איז מושך היתר שבקשת למטה מטה,
and this shoots

בחי' "אויב הסמוך והגלוי",
and the second –

which he cannot feel in his soul because it is in a very great concealment within him,
וואס ער קען ניט מרגיש זיין בנפשו דערפאר וואס זי איז בהעלם גדול ביותר ביי אים,
in the aspect of "the enemy who is distant and hidden",
בחי' "אויב הרחוק והנסתר",
And in particular

But in order to subdue the klipa that is within him in the very greatest concealment

he must reach a level in service
דארף ער אנקומען צו א דרגא אין עבודה
(prayer)

of "Bausi",

the aspect of "bow",

that he effects within himself a self-nullification and humility and lowliness that is the greatest,

he does not only bow like "bowing his head like a bulrush",
ער בויגט זיך ניט נאר ווי "הלכף כאגמון ראשו",
but he "draws" the "string of the bow" downward downward –

that he effects within himself a self-nullification and humility and lowliness that is the greatest and most immense,
אז ער פועל'ט בא זיך א ביטול והכנעה ושפלות הכי גדולה ועצומה,
through that which he prays
דורך דעם וואס ער בעט
(in prayer)

to the Most High with bitterness and immense lowliness in soulful supplications that there should be "Hashem helps him" from the "enemy and avenger",
בא דעם אויבערשטן במרירות ושפלות עצומה בתחנונים נפשיים אז עס זאל זיין "הקב"ה עוזרו 95 " פון דעם "אויב ומתנקם",
the evil inclination.

And then he is certainly successful,

because he has the promise of "I have toiled and found" and "Hashem helps him" –

that it will be "to still the enemy and the avenger" with all the interpretations of the matter.

This success is further assured when one begins with "from the mouths of infants and sucklings You have established strength",

through which it becomes "to still the enemy and the avenger",
וואס דורך דעם ווערט "להשבית אויב ומתנקם",
as it is stated explicitly in the verse,

And the service is –

that he specifically sees to it that every Jewish child and all Jewish children should be "established strength" –

that they should receive the education of "there is no strength except Torah",

Then it becomes "to still the enemy and the avenger",
וואס דעמולט ווערט "להשבית אויב ומתנקם",
and the world ceases to shake,
און די וועלט הערט זיך אויף צו שאקלען,
because there is the sustenance of the world,
ווארום עס ווערט קיום העולם,
"the world stands" and "the world endures",
"העולם עומד" און "העולם קיים",
and also within this –
און אויך בתוך זה –
that his own world,
אז זיין אייגענע וועלט,
"the small world" that is man,

stands in a manner of "standing" and "enduring" –

through "the breath of their mouths

because it comes through children,

who are in the aspect of "small",

In continuation of what was discussed above regarding the matter of "I have taken from the hand of the Emorite",
בהמשך להמדובר לעיל וועגן דעם ענין פון "לקחתי מיד האמורי",
the matter of the conquest of the land,
דער ענין פון כיבוש הארץ,
in the spiritual aspects –
ברוחניות הענינים –
it is from the matters as they are in spirituality that one comes to the matters as they are then brought down in physicality below ten handbreadths:
איז פון די ענינים ווי זיי זיינען ברוחניות קומט מען צו די ענינים ווי זיי ווערן דערנאך נשתלשל בגשמיות למטה מעשרה טפחים:
There will be the "I have taken from the hand of the Emorite" in physicality –
ס'ווערט דער "לקחתי מיד האמורי" בגשמיות –
that in addition to the portions of the Land of Israel that the Most High has already now given over with free grace and open miracles and as a gift and with a pleasant countenance to each and every one of Israel,
אז אין צוגאב צו די חלקים פון ארץ ישראל וואס דער אויבערשטער האט שוין איצטער אפגעגעבן בחסד חנם ונסים גלויים ובתורת מתנה ובסבר פנים יפות צו כל אחד ואחת פון אידן,
to each individual and to all Israel until the end of all generations,
צו יעדער איך און צו אלע אידן עד סוף כל הדורות,
And in truth –
און באמת –
beginning from the Covenant Between the Parts, every Jew is a master over the entire Land of Israel,
אנהויבנדיק פון דעם ברית בין הבתרים איז יעדער איד א בעה"ב אויף גאנץ ארץ ישראל,
even over a "handbreadth" of the Land of Israel –
אפילו אויף א "שעל" פון ארץ ישראל –
So even though there must be "do not provoke the nations" regarding the remaining parts of the Land of Israel
איז אע"פ וואס עס דארף זיין "אל תתגרה בגוי 99 " בנוגע צו שאר החלקים פון ארץ ישראל
(which the Most High has not yet given over to Israel),
(וואס דער אויבערשטער האט נאך ניט אפגעגעבן אידן),
as discussed above,
כמדובר לעיל,
that "not with our powers will we return to the Land of Israel" –
אז "ניט מיט אונזערע כחות וועלן מיר צוריק קומען אין ארץ ישראל" –
However
איז אבער
(as a continuation of the saying)

the Most High will redeem us from exile,
דער אויבערשטער וועט אונז אויסלייזען פון גלות,
and will also give over to Israel the entire Land of Israel in its completeness,
און גיט אויך אפ צו אידן גאנץ ארץ ישראל בשלימותה,
to its borders,
לגבולותי',
And immediately after this –
און גלייך נאך דעם –
"Hashem your God will enlarge your border".
"ירחיב ה' אלקיך את גבולך 100 ".
The preparation for this is, however,
די הכנה לזה איז אבער,
that already now one holds firmly to the portions of the Land of Israel that the Most High has given over to Israel with open miracles and as a gift.
אז שוין נאך איצטער האלט מען בתוקף די חלקים פון ארץ ישראל וואס דער אויבערשטער האט אפגעגעבן אידן בנסים גלויים ובמתנה.
And heaven forbid to despise it, God forbid,
און ח"ו מבעט זיין, ר"ל,
the miracles of Hashem and His gift,
בנסי השם ובמתנתו,
by letting in there,
דורך אריינלאזן דארט,
and giving it over, God forbid,
און דאס אפגעבן, ר"ל,
to gentileness,
גוי'אישקייט,
or to a literal gentile.
אדער א גוי כפשוטו.
And it is a certain thing that specifically this is the way to
און ס'איז א זיכערע זאך אז דוקא דאס איז דער וועג צו
peace,
שלום,
because this is the way according to the Torah,
ווארום דאס איז דער דרך ע"פ תורה,
and especially after he conducts himself with good character traits:
ובפרט נאך אז ער פירט זיך מיט מדות טובות:
at the time that the Most High gives a gift with a pleasant countenance and with open miracles the portions of the Land of Israel that Jews now have in their hand –
בשעת דער אויבערשטער גיט א מתנה בסבר פנים יפות ובנסים גלויים די חלקים פון ארץ ישראל וואס אידן האבן איצטער בידם –
one is not an ingrate
איז מען ניט קיין כפוי טובה
(may it not be said)
(ר"ל)
to not accept the gift.
אויף ניט אננעמען די מתנה.
And all the more so that one does not despise this by giving away something to non-Jews and non-Jewishness.
ועאכו"כ אז מ'איז ניט מבעט בזה דורך עפעס אפגעבן גוים און גוי'אישקייט.
And in addition to this:
און נוסף לזה:
by a Jew there is the principle of "and you shall walk in His ways",
ביי א אידן איז דא דער "והלכת בדרכיו 101 ",
that he emulates his character traits and conduct to the character traits and conduct of the Holy One, blessed be He.
אז ער איז מדמה מדות והנהגות שלו צו מדותיו והנהגותיו של הקב"ה 102.
And in this matter:
ובנדו"ד:
just as the Most High gave with His kindness and with a pleasant countenance to Jews the portions of the land that they now have in their hand –
פונקט ווי דער אויבערשטער האט אפגעגעבן בחסדו ובסבר פנים יפות צו אידן די חלקי הארץ וואס זיי האבן איצטער בידם –
so too does a Jew conduct himself,
אזוי אויך פירט זיך א איד,
that he explains with a pleasant countenance to each and every one,
אז ער איז מסביר בסבר פנים יפות לכל אחד ואחת,
even to non-Jews,
אפילו צו ניט אידן,
that this belongs to Jews as an eternal inheritance by virtue of the Covenant Between the Parts,
אז דאס געהערט צו אידן אלס א נחלת עולם מצד דעם ברית בין הבתרים,
"an eternal covenant",
"ברית עולם",
and this was given to every Jew in a manner of an eternal inheritance by the Eternal God. And it cannot be otherwise!
און דאס איז אפגעגעבן געווארן צו יעדער אידן אין אן אופן פון נחלת עולם דורך אלקי עולם. און עס קען ניט זיין אנדערש!
And whoever will come and say that he wants to forgo this,
און ווער ס'וועט קומען און זאגן אז ער וויל מוותר זיין אויף דעם,
or that it is a proper thing to forgo etc. –
אדער אז ס'איז א גלייכע זאך צו מוותר זיין וכו' –
he has no right whatsoever to do this,
האט ער קיין שום רעכט ניט דאס צו טאן,
because the Land of Israel belongs to every Jew throughout all the generations,
ווארום ארץ ישראל געהערט צו יעדער אידן במשך כל הדורות,
and no one has any ownership over it to give it away to someone else;
און קיינער האט ניט קיין בעה"ב'ישקייט אויף דעם דאס צו אימעצן אפגעבן;
it is against justice and fairness,
ס'איז נגד הצדק והיושר,
even according to the justice and fairness of non-Jews,
אפילו לויט צדק ויושר פון ניט אידן,
to act as a master over matters,
צו בעה"ב'טעווען אויף ענינים,
even over a "portion" of them,
אפילו אויף א "שעל" מהם,
that do not belong to him!
וואס געהערן ניט צו אים!
And the explanation that one has from the evil inclination,
און די הסברה וואס מ'האט פון דעם יצר,
that this
אז דאס
(giving away portions of the Land of Israel to non-Jews)
(אפגעבן חלקים פון ארץ ישראל צו גוים)
will bring a "good thing",
וועט ברענגען א "דבר טוב",
to "peace" and the like –
צו "שלום" וכיו"ב –
one must know,
דארף מען וויסן,
that from a thing that is contrary to the Torah cannot come forth a good matter,
אז פון א זאך וואס איז היפך התורה קען ניט ארויסקומען אן ענין טוב,
and especially such a good as peace,
ובפרט אזא טוב ווי שלום,
for when there is peace here, everything is here!
וואס בשעת שלום כאן הכל כאן 103!
And on the contrary –
ואדרבה –
through conducting oneself contrary to the Torah is the way that leads, may it not be said,
דורך פירן זיך היפך התורה איז דער וועג וואס פירט, ר"ל,
to the opposite of peace entirely.
צו היפך השלום לגמרי.
And when someone comes and wants to persuade someone else,
און אז ס'קומט צוגיין איינער און וויל אימעצן איינרעדן,
that giving away the portions of the Land of Israel is permissible according to the Torah –
אז אפגעבן די חלקים פון ארץ ישראל איז אויסגעהאלטן ע"פ תורה –
one must know,
דארף מען וויסן,
that this is absolute falsehood,
אז דאס איז שקר גמור,
because it is contrary to an explicit ruling in the Shulchan Aruch,
ווארום ס'איז היפך א פסק-דין גלוי אין שו"ע 104,
and this is a ruling in laws connected with life-threatening situations,
און דאס איז א פסק-דין אין הלכות פארבונדן מיט פקוח נפשות,
may it not be said, Heaven forbid,
ר"ל היל"ת,
as discussed multiple times.
כמדובר כמ"פ.
And to accept testimony from witnesses that this is not a life-threatening situation,
און מקבל זיין עדות פון עדים אז דאס איז ניט פקוח נפשות,
when one knows that the witnesses have accepted a bribe and not to ask the experts in these matters whether this is a life-threatening situation,
וואס מ'ווייסט אז די עדים האבן מקבל געווען שוחד און ניט פרעגן בא די מומחים אין די ענינים צי דאס איז פקוח נפשות,
and then to rule accordingly –
און דערנאך פסק'נען לפי"ז –
this is entirely contrary to the Torah!
איז דאס היפך התורה לגמרי!
And since this concerns life-threatening situations –
און וויבאלד אז דאס רעדט זיך וועגן פקוח נפשות –
the only way that "the world –
איז דער איינציקער וועג אז עס זאל זיין "העולם –
"a small world" this is man –
"עולם קטן" זה האדם –
should exist"
קיים"
(the opposite of life-threatening situations),
(היפך פון פקוח נפשות),
is this through going in the way of the Torah,
איז דאס דורך דעם וואס מ'גייט בדרך התורה,
the Torah of truth,
תורת אמת,
without accepting a bribe, may it not be said,
אן קבלת שוחד ר"ל,
all the more so without accepting testimony from those who belong to the four groups that "do not receive the face of the Divine Presence",
עאכו"כ אן קבלת עדות וואס זיי געהערן צו די ד' כתות וואס "אין מקבלות פני שכינה 105 ",
as discussed multiple times.
כמדובר כמ"פ.
And especially when one has already said about another that he is "not normal",
ובפרט אז איינער האט שוין געזאגט אויף א צווייטן אז ער איז "ניט נארמאל",
and as the matter is well-known in the Holy Land,
וכמפורסם הדבר בארץ הקודש,
and nevertheless he still has dealings with him in the future,
און אעפ"כ האט ער מיט אים נאך אלץ צו טאן להבא,
because –
ווארום –
"a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous",
"השוחד יעור עיני חכמים ויסלף דברי צדיקים 106 ",
and as one has already seen in the past what came about through this conduct,
און ווי מ'האט שוין געזען בעבר וואס איז ארויסגעקומען ע"י הנהגה זו,
which is not the place to elaborate on this.
וואס אין כאן המקום להאריך בזה.
And especially on a "day of favor"
ובפרט אין א "יום רצון"
(a fast day) –
(א יום צום) –
one must surely speak then only in the merit of Israel,
דארף מען דאך דעמולט רעדן נאר בזכותם של ישראל,
and as the Alter Rebbe says and instructs in Tanya chapter 32,
און ווי דער אלטער רבי זאגט און הייסט אין תניא פרק לב,
that love of Israel for every Jew,
אז אהבת ישראל צו יעדער איד,
even for "mere creatures",
אפילו צו "בריות בעלמא",
is within the power of each and every one of Israel
איז בכחו של כאו"א מישראל
(as above).
(כנ"ל).
It is a certain thing that "He will pour upon them a spirit from on high",
איז א זיכערע זאך אז "יערה עליהם רוח ממרום 107 ",
and the witnesses who accepted a bribe,
און די עדים וועלכע האבן מקבל געווען שוחד,
and brought about a failure,
און האבן געבראכט צו א כשלון,
a matter,
אן ענין,
a ruling –
א הוראה –
"as if" according to the Torah,
"כאילו" ע"פ תורה,
which is however in truth contrary to a law in the Shulchan Aruch –
וואס איז אבער באמת היפך א דין אין שו"ע –
will confess
וועלן זיך מתוודה זיין
(before themselves,
(בפני עצמם,
or not before themselves)
אדער שלא בפני עצמם)
what they have done here.
וואס זיי האבן דא אפגעטאן.
And "nothing stands in the way of repentance" –
און "אין לך דבר שעומד בפני התשובה 108 " –
therefore they can,
דעריבער קענען זיי,
and they must endeavor to rectify
און זיי דארפן זיך משתדל זיין צו מתקן זיין
(and ask others that they should help them rectify)
(און בעטן אנדערע אז מ'זאל זיי העלפן מתקן זיין)
the distortion,
דעם מעוות,
the undesirable matters that were in the past,
די ענינים בלתי רצויים וואס זיינען געווען בעבר,
at least those that can still be rectified
עכ"פ זיי וואס מ'קען נאך מתקן זיין
(as much as it is possible to rectify),
(עד כמה שאפשר לתקן),
and actually a very large part can still be rectified in practice
און אייגענטלעך איז גאר א גרויסער טייל קען מען נאך מתקן זיין בפועל
(and afterwards they will continue in the rectifications of repentance in the matters that are in their power to rectify),
(און דערנאך וועלן זיי ממשיך זיין אין תיקוני תשובה אין די ענינים וואס אין בידם לתקן),
Through this that they will come to those before whom they gave the testimony,
דורך דעם וואס זיי וועלן קומען צו די פאר וועמען זיי האבן געזאגט די עדות,
and confess and supplicate before them and ask them with heartfelt mercy,
און זיך מתוודה און מתחנן זיין בא זיי און בעטן זיי ברחמים נפשיים,
"with my prayer and my supplication",
"בצלותי ובבעותי",
that since they
אז וויבאלד אז זיי
(the witnesses)
(די עדים)
caused them to stumble,
האבן זיי מכשיל געווען,
and in a matter connected with danger to life,
און אין אן ענין פארבונדן מיט פקוח נפשות,
they should publicize that the ruling that was given was based on the testimony of one who accepted a bribe,
זאלן זיי מפרסם זיין אז די הוראה וואס מ'האט געגעבן איז געווען על יסוד פון עדות פון א מקבל שוחד,
and it is null and void from the outset.
און זי איז בטל ומבוטל מעיקרא.
And this is the only way to bring peace,
און דאס איז דער איינציקער וועג אויף ברענגען צו שלום,
for this is the only way that our Torah,
ווארום דאס איז דער איינציקער וועג ווי תורתנו,
the Torah of truth,
תורת אמת,
dictates to conduct oneself,
הייסט פירן זיך,
which it
וואס זי
(the Torah of truth)
(תורת אמת)
does not tolerate any matter of falsehood,
פארטראגט ניט קיין ענין פון שקר,
bribery,
שוחד,
flattery and evil speech, may G-d forbid,
חניפה און לה"ר, ר"ל,
all the more so not the opposite of love of Israel,
עאכו"כ ניט היפך פון אהבת ישראל,
And as the Rambam concludes his laws of fasts –
און ווי דער רמב"ם איז מסיים הל' תעניות שלו –
"and truth and peace love".
"והאמת והשלום אהבו".
And although it is not a pleasant thing,
און אע"פ וואס ס'איז ניט קיין געשמאקער זאך,
and it is a great service,
און ס'איז אן עבודה גדולה,
to admit that he gave false testimony –
צו מודה זיין אז ער האט געזאגט אן עדות שקר –
but the Almighty gives strength to every Jew,
גיט אבער דער אויבערשטער כח יעדן אידן,
even the one who caused others to stumble, may G-d forbid,
אפילו דער וואס האט מכשיל געווען אנדערע, ר"ל,
that even he should be able to repent,
אז אויך ער זאל קענען תשובה טאן,
to take upon himself the "and truth and peace love".
אין נעמען אויף זיך דעם "האמת והשלום אהבו".
And all this should be done "in one hour, in one day, in one moment",
און דאס אלעס זאל אפגעטאן ווערן "בשעתא חדא ביומא חדא ברגע חדא",
as it is stated regarding the general matter of repentance,
אזוי ווי ס'שטייט אויף כללות ענין התשובה 109,
that this is "in one hour, in one day, in one moment",
אז דאס איז "בשעתא חדא ביומא חדא ברגע חדא",
with all the matters explained in this,
מיט די אלע ענינים המבוארים בזה 110,
including also simply:
כולל אויך בפשטות:
"in one hour, in one day, in one moment" –
"בשעתא חדא ביומא חדא ברגע חדא" –
immediately and at once in time.
תיכף ומיד אין זמן.
And as mentioned,
און כאמור,
specifically this is the only way to bring peace.
דוקא דאס איז דער איינציקער וועג צו ברענגען שלום.
For one conducts himself according to Torah,
ווארום מ'פירט זיך ע"פ תורה,
there is the "if you walk in my statutes" –
ס'איז דא דער "אם בחוקותי תלכו 111 " –
"that you shall be toiling in Torah":
"שתהיו עמלים בתורה 112 ":
one does not rely on the fact that there comes along a one-day scholar,
מ'פארלאזט זיך ניט אויף דעם אז ס'קומט צוגיין א בר בי רב דחד יומא,
who accepted a bribe and gives false testimony,
וואס האט באקומען שוחד און זאגט אן עדות שקר,
and with this one fulfills all the investigations and inquiries that must be before one rules a law,
און דערמיט איז מען יוצא די גאנצע חקירות ודרישות וואס דארפן זיין איידער מ'פסק'נט אפ א דין,
and especially a law connected with danger to life –
ובפרט א דין פארבונדן מיט פקוח נפשות –
rather there is the "toiling in Torah",
נאר ס'איז דא דער "עמלים בתורה",
that one labors in Torah as Torah wants one to labor in it,
אז מ'הארעוועט אין תורה ווי תורה וויל מ'זאל אין איר הארעווען,
and one makes all the investigations and inquiries as one needs to make them.
און מ'מאכט די אלע חקירות ודרישות ווי מ'דארף עס מאכן.
And especially further,
ובפרט נאך,
as we learn from today's Chumash lesson,
ווי מ'לערנט אפ פון דעם היינטיקן שיעור חומש,
as discussed above
כמדובר לעיל
(page 68),
(ס"ח),
that as an introduction to the study of Torah there is the matter of "and let my soul be like dust to all" –
אז בהקדמה צו לימוד התורה איז דא דער ענין פון "ונפשי כעפר לכל תהי'" –
with him there is the matter of self-nullification,
ביי אים איז דא דער ענין הביטול,
and consequently he does not go around and shout that one must obey him because he received testimony from witnesses who accepted a bribe,
ובמילא גייט ער ניט ארום און שרייט אז מ'מוז אים פאלגן דערפאר וואס ער האט באקומען אן עדות פון עדים וואס קבלו שוחד,
rather he knows –
נאר ער ווייסט –
as every Jew knows –
ווי יעדער איד ווייסט –
that "and let my soul be like dust to all",
אז "ונפשי כעפר לכל תהי'",
and specifically this is the beginning to "open my heart to your Torah",
און דוקא דאס איז די התחלה צו "פתח לבי בתורתך",
in the Torah of the Almighty,
אין דעם אויבערשטן'ס תורה,
that all rulings of laws in the Torah are only as the Almighty wants,
אז אלע פסקי דינים בתורה זיינען נאר ווי דער אויבערשטער וויל,
not as "many thoughts in the heart of a man", G-d forbid.
ניט ווי "רבות מחשבות בלב איש 113 " ח"ו.
Then it is certainly "toiling in Torah" with him,
וואס דעמולט איז ביי אים זיכער "עמלים בתורה",
and especially when he needs to rule on a question.
ובפרט בשעת ער דארף פסק'נען א שאלה.
And afterwards there is also the continuation –
און דערנאך איז אויך דא דער המשך –
"and you shall keep my commandments and do them",
"ואת מצוותי תשמרו ועשיתם אותם 111 ",
And specifically this brings
און דוקא דאס ברענגט
(as the continuation of the verses)
(כהמשך הכתובים)
"and I will give peace in the land".
"ונתתי שלום בארץ 114 ".
Which this is also connected with the destiny "and I will lead you upright"
וואס דאס איז אויך פארבונדן מיט דעם יעוד "ואולך אתכם קוממיות"
(which is also stated in the verses),
(וואס שטייט אויך אין די פסוקים 115),
that every Jew and all Jews stand with an "upright posture",
אז יעדער איד און אלע אידן שטייען מיט א "קומה זקופה 116 ",
for the soul did not go into exile,
ווארום די נשמה איז ניט געגאנגען אין גלות,
and they make their soul primary and their body secondary –
און עושים נשמתם עיקר וגופם טפל –
with him the main thing is as the standing and situation of the soul is,
ביי אים איז דער עיקר ווי דער מעמד ומצב פון דער נשמה איז,
that there is no exile
אז ס'איז ניטא קיין גלות
(as above, section 7).
(כנ"ל ס"ז).
He indeed fulfills the "do not provoke a nation",
ער איז טאקע מקיים דעם "אל תתגרה בגוי",
because thus
ווייל אזוי
The Torah told him,
האט תורה אים אנגעזאגט,
but this speaks specifically about matters
אבער דאס רעדט זיך דוקא וועגן זאכן
(not connected with Judaism)
(ניט פארבונדן מיט אידישקייט)
that entice,
וואס זיי זיינען מגרה,
they provoke,
זיי רייצן אויף,
the gentile;
דעם גוי;
but when it comes to matters of Judaism –
אבער ווען עס קומט צו זאכן פון אידישקייט –
a gentile has no ownership over this,
האט א גוי אויף דעם ניט קיין בעה"ב'ישקייט 117,
and a Jew stands upon this with all strength.
און א איד שטייט אויף דעם בכל התוקף.
And certainly not come to a gentile and say to him, Heaven forbid,
ועאכו"כ ניט קומען צום גוי און זאגן אים, ר"ל,
that even though the Most High gave Jews as a gift and with open miracles and with free grace portions in the Land of Israel,
אז אע"פ וואס דער אויבערשטער האט געגעבן אידן במתנה ובנסים גלויים ובחסד חנם חלקים אין ארץ ישראל,
he does not have it from his own power and the might of his hand,
ער האט עס ניט מצד כחו ועוצם ידו,
but only from the power and the might of the hand of the Holy One, blessed be He –
נאר מצד כחו ועוצם ידו של הקב"ה –
he starts up with the gentile,
שלאגט ער זיך אן צום גוי,
that he wants to give it back to him, Heaven forbid!
אז ער וויל אים דאס אפגעבן צוריק ר"ל!
Such a thing never was in Israel,
וואס אזא זאך איז קיינמאל ניט געווען בישראל,
it is certainly a sure thing that also now it will be "it shall not stand,"
איז דאך א זיכערע זאך אז אויך איצטער וועט עס זיין "לא יקום 118 ",
and it will not come to that –
און ס'וועט ניט צוקומען דערצו –
for "until old age" is "I will bear" and "I will deliver,"
ווארום "ועד זקנה" איז "אני אסבול" און "אמלט 119 ",
and therefore "He devises a plan and it is foiled, He speaks a word and it shall not stand, for God is with us" –
און פאר דעם איז "עוצה עצה ותופר דברו דבר ולא יקום כי עמנו א-ל 118 " –
we go together with the Most High,
מיר גייען צוזאמען מיטן אויבערשטן,
and together with His Torah,
און צוזאמען מיט זיין תורה,
as the Torah is the Torah of truth,
ווי תורה איז תורת אמת,
having cast out from it bribery and falsehood,
ארויסגעווארפן פון איר שוחד ושקר,
and with this one also approaches the gentiles,
און דערמיט קומט מען צוגיין אויך צו די גויים,
and one says to them:
און מ'זאגט זיי:
"Do not provoke a gentile" –
"אל תתגרה בגוי" –
we do not conduct with you any trickery and we do not speak with you any falsehoods and we do not speak with you any "diplomacy";
מיר פירן ניט מיט אייך קיין דרייעריי און מ'רעדט ניט מיט אייך קיינע שקרים און מ'רעדט ניט מיט אייך קיין "דיפלאמאטיע";
we tell you about the "Covenant Between the Parts,"
מ'דערציילט אייך וועגן "ברית בין הבתרים",
and we say to you that no gentile is an owner over matters of Judaism,
און מ'זאגט אייך אז קיין גוי איז ניט קיין בעה"ב אויף ענינים פון אידישקייט,
and Judaism means,
און אידישקייט הייסט,
that when one receives a gift from the Most High one may not be an ingrate, Heaven forbid, to not accept the gift!
אז בשעת מ'באקומט א מתנה פון דעם אויבערשטן טאר מען ניט זיין קיין כפוי טובה ר"ל אויף ניט אננעמען די מתנה!
And certainly not to even think,
עאכו"כ ניט צו טראכטן אפילו,
and certainly not to express in speech,
עאכו"כ נאך ארויסברענגען בדיבור,
God forbid,
היל"ת,
about such a terrifying thing,
וועגן אזא דבר מבהיל,
that it could be a desecration of God's name,
אז ס'קען זיין א קס"ד,
that when the Most High "took it from them and gave it to us" now portions of the Land of Israel,
אז בשעת דער אויבערשטער איז "נטלה מהם ונתנה לנו 120 " איצטער חלקים פון ארץ ישראל,
as a gift and with open miracles –
בתורת מתנה ובנסים גלויים –
he should be the one who wants, Heaven forbid,
זאל ער זיין דער וואס וויל, ר"ל,
to take it from Israel and give it back to gentiles! Certainly this is nothing less than a desecration of God's name,
נטלה מישראל און דאס אפגעבן צוריק צו גויים! זיכער איז דאס מערניט ווי א קס"ד,
for,
ווארום,
as mentioned,
כאמור,
"He devises
"עוצה
a plan and it is foiled, He speaks a word and it shall not stand, for God is with us,"
עצה ותופר דברו דבר ולא יקום כי עמנו א-ל",
and "Many thoughts are in a man's heart, but the counsel of the Lord, it shall stand,"
און "רבות מחשבות בלב איש ועצת ה' היא תקום 113 ",
and "the Torah promised" that Jews will surely repent,
און "הבטיחה תורה" אז אידן וועלן זיכער תשובה טאן,
for it is already "at the end of their exile."
ווארום מ'האלט שוין "בסוף גלותן 121 ".
The main point is,
דער עיקר איז,
as discussed above,
כמדובר לעיל,
that there should be the matter of love of Israel for every single one of Israel,
אז עס זאל זיין דער ענין פון אהבת ישראל לכל אחד ואחת מישראל,
even for "creatures,"
אפילו צו "בריות",
and as explained at length in chapter 32 of Tanya,
וכמבואר בארוכה אין פרק לב פון תניא,
and as mentioned above also the emphasis of this year,
וכמוזכר לעיל אויך די הדגשה פון שנה זו,
that "good to creatures" should be together with "good to Heaven."
אז "טוב לבריות" זאל זיין צוזאמען מיט "טוב לשמים".
The matter of love of Israel for all Jews begins
דער ענין פון אהבת ישראל צו אלע אידן הויבט זיך אן
(as discussed many times) –
(כמדובר כמ"פ) –
through the fact that one unites Jews through Torah,
דורך דעם וואס מ'איז מאחד אידן דורך תורה,
And particularly and especially that which is necessary in these times –
ובפרטיות ובמיוחד וואס ס'נויטיקט זיך בימינו אלו –
to unite Jews in a Torah scroll,
מאחד זיין אידן אין א ספר תורה,
as it says in Daniel,
ווי ער זאגט אין דניאל 122,
that "at that time
אז "בעת ההיא
(the time close before the coming of Mashiach)
(דער זמן סמוך פאר ביאת משיח)
your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book."
ימלט עמך כל הנמצא כתוב בספר 123 ".
Therefore let each one of us,
דעריבער זאל יעדערער פון אונז,
and each one of one,
און יעדערער פון איין,
and every Jew –
און יעדער איד –
have a letter written in the book "this Torah,"
האבן אן אות כתובה אין ספר "התורה הזאת",
and a letter that is connected with the Jew –
און אן אות וואס איז פארבונדן מיט דעם איד –
through the fact that he purchased it by giving a prutah or more than that,
דורך דעם וואס ער האט איר געקויפט מיט געבן א פרוטה אדער יותר מזה,
that "he could purchase with this the life of his soul"
וואס "הי' יכול לקנות בזה חיי נפשו"
(as it states in Tanya)
(ווי עס שטייט אין תניא 124)
And simply:

One should see that all Jews,
מ'זאל זען אז אלע אידן,
from "your heads, your tribes" until "your woodcutters" and "your water drawers,"
פון "ראשיכם שבטיכם" ביז "חוטב עציך" און "שואב מימיך",
and certainly "your little ones" –
עאכו"כ "טפכם" –
should purchase a letter in a Torah scroll.
זאלן קויפן אן אות אין א ספר תורה.
And certainly there must be the effort regarding Jews who find themselves "behind the Iron Curtain,"
ועאכו"כ דארף זיין די השתדלות בנוגע צו אידן וואס געפינען זיך "מאחורי מסך הברזל",
besieged and captive –
נתונים במצור ובשבי' –
that one should purchase a letter in a Torah scroll for each one of them,
אז מ'זאל קויפן אן אות אין א ספר תורה פאר יעדערן פון זיי,
or that he himself
אדער אז ער אליין
(the one who finds himself "behind the Iron Curtain")
(דער וואס געפינט זיך "מאחורי מסך הברזל")
should purchase a letter in an appropriate manner
זאל קויפן אן אות באופן המתאים
(of course).
(כמובן).
and become a "found written in the book"
און ווערן א "נמצא כתוב בספר"
(in a renewed and refreshed manner).
(אין א באנייטן און אפגעפרישטן אופן).
And then one has the promise,
און דעמולט האט מען די הבטחה,
that it will be "your people will be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book,"
אז ס'וועט זיין "ימלט עמך כל הנמצא כתוב בספר",
until in a manner of the completeness of the people,
ביז אין אן אופן פון שלימות העם,
for one will go together with the completeness of the Torah,
ווארום מ'וועט גיין צוזאמען מיט שלימות התורה,
the Torah in its completeness,
תורה בשלימותה,
having cast out from it matters that came about through bribery and falsehood and flattery and slander and the like,
ארויסגעווארפן פון איר ענינים וואס זיינען געקומען ע"י שוחד ושקר וחניפה ולה"ר וכיו"ב,
for there will also be the completeness of Jerusalem,
ווארום ס'ווערט אויך שלימות פון ירושלים,
the city "that was joined together as one,"
דער עיר "שחוברה לה יחדיו",
which goes together with the completeness of the land.
וואס דאס גייט צוזאמען מיט שלימות הארץ.
What is in the completeness of the land is assured –
וואס אין שלימות הארץ איז מען פארזיכערט –
because that which one has and that which one receives of the Land of Israel is not through "my power and the might of my hand,"
ווארום דאס וואס מ'האט און וואס מ'באקומט ארץ ישראל איז דאס ניט ע"י "כחי ועוצם ידי",
but through the power and the might of the hand of the Holy One, blessed be He,
נאר בכחו ועוצם ידו של הקב"ה,
Who guards the Land of Israel together with the "one lamb" –
וואס ער היט ארץ ישראל צוזאמען מיט דער "כבשה אחת 125 " –
all Jews,
אלע אידן,
as it is said "He will not slumber nor sleep, the Guardian of Israel,"
כמ"ש 126 "לא ינום ולא יישן שומר ישראל",
both "by day" and "by night" it is "Hashem is your guardian, Hashem is your shade upon your right hand,"
סיי "יומם" און סיי "בלילה" איז "ה' שומרך ה' צלך על יד ימינך 127 ",
and guards in a manner of "and I will grant peace in the land,"
און היט אין אן אופן פון "ונתתי שלום בארץ",
because there is the "If you walk in My statutes –
ווארום ס'איז דא דער "אם בחוקותי תלכו –
that you be toiling in Torah –
שתהיו עמלים בתורה –
and observe My commandments and perform them"
ואת מצוותי תשמרו ועשיתם אותם"
(as above).
(כנ"ל).
May it be His will that each one should add, in its simple sense, in all three lines –
ויהי רצון אז יעדערער זאל מוסיף זיין כפשוטו אין אלע שלשה קוים –
Torah,
תורה,
divine service
עבודה
(prayer)
(תפלה)
and acts of kindness,
און גמילות חסדים,
and primarily charity.
ובעיקר צדקה.
And doing this beginning on the fast day of the Tenth of Tevet,
און טאן דאס אנהויבנדיק אין דעם יום צום פון עשירי בטבת,
"a day of favor,"
"יום רצון",
and in a manner that this should afterwards become a "continuous action,"
און אין אן אופן אז דאס זאל דערנאך ווערן א "פעולה נמשכת",
a continuation in this manner
א המשך באופן זה
(with addition in the three lines)
(בההוספה בהשלשה קוים)
throughout the entire year.
במשך כל השנה.
And just as the year began with a day that was the third upon which it was doubled that it was good,
און אזוי ווי דער יאר האט זיך אנגעהויבן מיט א יום השלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב,
"good for heaven and good for creatures" –
"טוב לשמים וטוב לבריות" –
so should every Jew and the entirety of the children of Israel,
אזוי זאל יעדער איד און כללות בני ישראל,
and especially "everyone who is found written in the book"
ובמיוחד "כל הנמצא כתוב בספר"
(in a renewed and refreshed manner) –
(אין א באנייטן און אפגעפרישטן אופן) –
through having a letter in one of the Torah scrolls –
דורך האבן אן אות אין איינע פון די ספרי תורה –
see in the good that is seen and revealed: children, life, and ample sustenance, and in all of them, ample:
זען אין טוב הנראה והנגלה. בני חיי ומזוני רויחי ובכולם רויחי:
When one is still "in their settlements,"
ווען מ'געפינט זיך נאך "במושבותם",
in the last days of exile, still before the beginning of the redemption –
אין די לעצטע טעג פון גלות נאך פאר אתחלתא דגאולה –
it is "and for all the children of Israel there was light in their settlements."
איז "ולכל בני ישראל הי' אור במושבותם 128 ".
And immediately afterwards comes the redemption,
און גלייך דערנאך קומט די גאולה,
according to the ruling of the Rambam –
כפסק דין הרמב"ם 129 –
"immediately they are redeemed."
"מיד הן נגאלין".
And the redemption comes "through my prayer and my supplication,"
און די גאולה קומט "בצלותי ובבעותי",
through the prayer of Israel,
ע"י תפלת ישראל,
who pray every day and several times every day –
וואס זיי זיינען מתפלל בכל יום וכמה פעמים בכל יום –
"The shoot of David Your servant, may it sprout forth speedily,"
"את צמח דוד עבדך מהרה תצמיח",
with emphasis on the word "speedily,"
מיט דער הדגשה אויפן ווארט "מהרה",
and afterwards continues "and may our eyes behold Your return to Zion with mercy,"
און דערנאך ממשיך "ותחזינה עינינו בשובך לציון ברחמים",
and afterwards
און דערנאך
(at the end of the prayer) –
(בסוף התפלה) –
"But the righteous will give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence,"
"אך צדיקים יודו לשמך ישבו ישרים את פניך 130 ",
speedily, in our days, literally.
במהרה בימינו ממש.
When Jews go out from exile with Mashiach our righteousness,
אז אידן גייען ארויס פון גלות מיט משיח צדקנו,
together with the Shechinah,
צוזאמען מיט שכינתא,
because there was "the Shechinah in exile,"
ווארום ס'איז געווען "שכינתא בגלותא",
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said "in every place to which they were exiled
כמאחז"ל 131 "בכל מקום שגלו
(Israel)
(ישראל)
the Shechinah was with them..
שכינה עמהן..
they were exiled to Babylon, the Shechinah was with them"
גלו לבבל שכינה עמהן"
("they were exiled to Edom, the Shechinah was with them") etc.,
("גלו לאדום שכינה עמהן 132 ") כו',
and "even when they are destined to be redeemed, the Shechinah is with them, as it is said 'and Hashem your God will return your captivity,'
און "אף כשהן עתידין ליגאל שכינה עמהן שנאמר 133 ושב ה' אלקיך את שבותך,
'and He will bring back' is not said, but rather 'and He will return,'
והשיב לא נאמר אלא ושב,
teaching that the Holy One, blessed be He, returns with them from among the exiles."
מלמד שהקב"ה שב עמהן מבין הגליות".
And even before this,
און נאך קודם לזה,
still in the time of exile –
נאך בזמן הגלות –
one has the Shechinah in its entirety,
האט מען די שכינה גאנצערהייט,
not looking at the fact that one is in exile,
ניט קוקנדיק אויף דעם וואס מ'איז אין גלות,
because one has and one studies Torah in its entirety,
ווארום מ'האט און מ'לערנט תורה גאנצערהייט,
without bribe and without compromises and without matters that are the opposite of truth
אן שוחד און אן פשרות און אן ענינים פון היפך האמת
(and this is not the place to elaborate on this,
(ואין כאן המקום להאריך בזה,
and especially since we have already mentioned about this previously).
ובפרט אז מ'האט וועגן דעם שוין פריער דערמאנט).
And especially since with him there is the introduction to the study of Torah of "and may my soul be like dust to all," as above
ובפרט אז ביי אים איז דא די הקדמה צו לימוד התורה פון "ונפשי כעפר לכל תהי'", כנ"ל
(section twenty-seven).
(סכ"ז).
And one goes "with our young and with our elderly etc. with our sons and with our daughters,"
און מ'גייט "בנערינו ובזקנינו גו' בבנינו ובבנותינו 134 ",
"everyone who is found written in the book,"
"כל הנמצא כתוב בספר",
to the Land of Israel,
אין ארץ ישראל,
together with all the Torah scrolls that have already been completed,
צוזאמען מיט אלע ספרי תורה וואס זיינען שוין נגמר געווארן,
and those that are still in the midst of their writing –
און די וואס מ'האלט נאך באמצע כתיבתם –
they will complete them in the Holy Land,
וועט מען זיי גומר זיין בארץ הקודש,
"a land which etc. the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year until the end of the year."
"ארץ אשר גו' תמיד עיני ה' אלקיך בה מרשית השנה ועד אחרית שנה 135 ".
And one goes in a manner of "upright"
און מ'גייט אין אן אופן פון "קוממיות"
("and I will lead you upright"),
("ואולך אתכם קוממיות"),
in its entirety,
גאנצערהייט,
"and their silver and their gold with them" in spirituality,
"וכספם וזהבם אתם 136 " ברוחניות,
all the more so "their silver and their gold with them" in physicality,
עאכו"כ "כספם וזהבם אתם" בגשמיות,
and in the language of the Rambam –
ובלשון הרמב"ם 137 –
that in the future to come there will be "delicacies as common as dust," – and
אז לע"ל וועלן זיין "מעדנים מצויין כעפר", – און
And (as the Rambam continues there)
און (ווי דער רמב"ם איז דארטן ממשיך)
"the occupation of the entire world" will then be "to know Hashem alone,"
"עסק כל העולם" וועט דעמולט זיין "לדעת את ה' בלבד",
"the Jews will be great sages and know hidden matters and will comprehend the knowledge of their Creator,"
"יהיו ישראל חכמים גדולים ויודעים דברים סתומים וישיגו דעת בוראם",
and in the language of the Rambam in the Laws of Repentance –
ובלשון הרמב"ם אין הל' תשובה 138 –
"in those days
"באותן הימים
(in the future to come)
(לע"ל)
knowledge and wisdom and truth will increase."
תרבה הדעת והחכמה והאמת".
And as a preparation for this –
און אלס צוגרייטונג דערצו –
one is occupied, still in the time of exile, with "to know Hashem..
איז מען זיך עוסק נאך אין זמן הגלות אין "לדעת את ה'..
and will comprehend the knowledge of their Creator,"
וישיגו דעת בוראם",
in matters of "know the God of your father,"
אין ענינים פון "דע את אלקי אביך 139 ",
and in the dissemination of truth
און אין הפצת האמת
("knowledge and wisdom and truth").
("הדעת והחכמה והאמת").
Simply –
בפשטות –
through the fact that all Jews conduct themselves in a manner of truth,
דורך דעם וואס אלע אידן פירן זיך אין אן אופן פון אמת,
and as the Rambam writes at the conclusion of the Laws of Fasts "love truth and peace" –
און ווי דער רמב"ם שרייבט בסיום הל' תעניות "האמת והשלום אהבו" –
that every Jew invests efforts so that there should be peace between every Jew and all Jews,
אז יעדער איד לייגט איין וועלטן אז עס זאל זיין שלום צווישן יעדער איד מיט אלע אידן,
and does this with truth,
און טוט דאס מיט אן אמת,
because he conducts himself according to the Torah of truth.
ווארום ער פירט זיך לויט תורת אמת.
And then one merits soon actually to the fulfillment of the prophecy of "these days shall become 'for joy and for gladness and for good festivals'"
און דעמולט איז מען זוכה בקרוב ממש צו דעם קיום היעוד פון יהפכו 140 ימים אלה "לששון ולשמחה ולמועדים טובים 141 "
(which stands for "and truth and peace love"),
(וואס שטייט פאר "והאמת והשלום אהבו"),
as the Rambam concludes
ווי דער רמב"ם איז מסיים
(bringing down the verse in)

the laws of fasts of his.

In this Rambam mentioned above

there is a wonderful precision:
איז דא א דיוק נפלא:
The Rambam writes there
דער רמב"ם שרייבט דארטן
(in the last halachah):
(אין די לעצטע הלכה):
"All these fasts are destined to be nullified in the days of the Messiah,
"כל הצומות האלו עתידים ליבטל לימות המשיח,
and moreover, they are destined to become festivals and days of joy and gladness, as it is said, 'Thus said the Lord of Hosts: The fast of the fourth, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth shall become for the house of Judah for joy and for gladness and for good festivals, and truth and peace love.'"
ולא עוד אלא שהם עתידים להיות ימים טובים 142 וימי ששון ושמחה שנאמר 141 כה אמר ה' צבאות צום הרביעי וצום החמישי וצום השביעי וצום העשירי יהי' לבית יהודה לששון ולשמחה ולמועדים טובים והאמת והשלום אהבו".
And as explained previously,
וכמבואר אמאל 143,
that the Rambam says here two things: (a)
אז דער רמב"ם זאגט דא צוויי זאכן: (א)
that "all these fasts are destined to be nullified in the days of the Messiah",
אז "כל הצומות האלו עתידים ליבטל לימות המשיח",
that all these fasts will become nullified in the days of the Messiah, and (b)
אז די אלע צומות וועלן בטל ווערן לימות המשיח, און (ב)
"and moreover, they are destined to become festivals and days of joy and gladness" –
"ולא עוד אלא שהם עתידים להיות ימים טובים וימי ששון ושמחה" –
that (not only will they become nullified, but)
אז (ניט נאר וואס זיי וועלן בטל ווערן, נאר)
they will be transformed into "festivals and days of joy and gladness".
זיי וועלן נתהפך ווערן צו "ימים טובים וימי ששון ושמחה".
And upon this second matter he brings the proof from the verse
און אויף דעם צווייטן ענין ברענגט ער די ראי' פון פסוק
(in Zechariah),
(אין זכרי'),
that the very matter of "the fast etc. shall become etc. for joy and for gladness and for good festivals etc.".
אז דער עצם ענין פון "צום גו' יהי' גו' לששון ולשמחה ולמועדים טובים גו'".
The Rambam, however, changes from the language of the verse
דער רמב"ם איז אבער משנה פון לשון הכתוב
(in Zechariah):

In the verse it says "for joy and for gladness
אין פסוק שטייט "לששון ולשמחה
(and then)
(און דערנאך)
and for good festivals",
ולמועדים טובים",
whereas the Rambam writes "festivals
משא"כ דער רמב"ם שרייבט "ימים טובים
(and then)
(און דערנאך)
and days of joy and gladness"?!
וימי ששון ושמחה"?!
One of the explanations regarding this:
איינער פון די ביאורים בזה:
The Rambam in his book of laws speaks of how the redemption comes in all manners,
דער רמב"ם אין ספר הלכות שלו רעדט ווי די גאולה קומט בכל האופנים,
also in the manner of necessity,
אויך באופן המוכרח,
in a manner that is impossible without it,
אין אן אופן וואס אי אפשר בלאו הכי,
in a manner of "they did not merit" –
אין אן אופן פון "לא זכו 144 " –
i.e., when Jews stand in a most lowly state
ד.ה. ווי אידן שטייען אין א מצב תחתון ביותר
(due to their service),
(מצד עבודתם),
then the redemption comes in a manner of "in its time".
וואס דעמולט קומט די גאולה אין אן אופן פון "בעתה 145 ".
Therefore one cannot "jump" from one extreme to the other –
דעריבער קען מען ניט "שפרינגען" מן הקצה אל הקצה –
that the fast days which become nullified in the days of the Messiah should immediately be transformed into "days of joy and gladness",
אז די ימי צום וואס ווערן בטל לימות המשיח זאלן גלייך נתהפך ווערן צו "ימי ששון ושמחה",
rather one must go with an order of "from the light to the heavy",
נאר מ'דארף גיין מיט א סדר פון מן הקל אל הכבד",
gradually

(in accordance with "they did not merit" and "in its time").

As an example, as our Sages of blessed memory say,
בדוגמא ווי חז"ל זאגן 146,
that "the men of the watch would fast four days a week..
אז "אנשי המעמד היו מתענין ארבעה ימים בשבוע..
and not on the first day of the week, so that they should not go from rest and delight to exertion and fasting and die". That is to say:
ולא באחד בשבת כדי שלא יצאו ממנוחה ועונג ליגיעה ותענית וימותו". דאס הייסט:
One cannot immediately jump from the day of Shabbat, which is a commandment to delight it with food and drink, into a fast day which is forbidden in food and drink,
מ'קען ניט גלייך אריינשפרינגען פון יום השבת וואס מצוה לענגו במאכל ובמשתה 147 אין א יום תענית וואס אסור במאכל ובמשתה,
it is too great a leap,
ס'איז צו גרויס א שפרונג,
rather in between there must be a day

of weekday when one is not obligated in delight of food and drink.
חול ווען מ'איז ניט מחוייב אין עונג במאכל ובמשתה.
And similarly in our case:

One cannot jump immediately from fast days that have become nullified to a state that they become transformed into "days of joy and gladness",

rather one must go with an order of "from the light to the heavy",

In the present time these days are –

"All these fasts are destined to be nullified in the days of the Messiah",

the fasts become nullified,

and afterwards one passes from the nullification of the fasts to the state that the fasts become "festivals"
און דערנאך גייט מען איבער פון ביטול הצומות צו דעם מצב אז די צומות ווערן "ימים טובים"
("and moreover, they are destined to become festivals"),
("ולא עוד אלא שהם עתידים להיות ימים טובים"),
and a festival is in an order of gradually:
וואס א יום טוב איז אין א סדר פון לאט לאט:
first the festival begins,
פריער הויבט זיך אן דער יום טוב,
and only after some time
און ערשט מיט א זמן לאח"ז
(from when the festival began)
(פון ווען ס'האט זיך אנגעהויבן יו"ט)
comes the time of the meal,
קומט דער זמן הסעודה,
which then is the
וואס דעמולט איז דער

joy of the festival,
שמחה פון יו"ט,
as it is said "there is no joy except with meat" and "there is no joy except with wine".

And similarly in our case:

First the nullified fasts become "festivals",
פריער ווערן די צומות הבטלים "ימים טובים",
and only afterwards do they become "days of joy and gladness".

Whereas in the verse

he speaks of how the redemption comes from above,
רעדט ער ווי די גאולה קומט מלמעלה,
and in a manner of "they merited",
און באופן פון "זכו 144 ",
i.e., that Jews stand in a most elevated state,
ד.ה. אז אידן שטייען במצב נעלה ביותר,
which then the redemption comes in a manner of "I will hasten it" –
וואס דעמולט קומט די גאולה באופן פון "אחישנה 145 " –
as "Michael the great prince" explains that thus it must be and thus it will be,
ווי "מיכאל השר הגדול" איז מסביר אז אזוי דארף זיין און אזוי וועט זיין,
as it is written in Daniel,
ווי עס שטייט אין דניאל 122,
And therefore immediately when the redemption comes –
און דעריבער גלייך ווען עס קומט די גאולה –
one comes immediately
קומט מען גלייך
(in a manner of "I will hasten it")
(באופן פון "אחישנה")
to the main point,
צו דעם עיקר,
that the nullified fasts become "days of joy and gladness",
אז די צומות הבטלים ווערן "ימי ששון ושמחה",
in a manner of joy that breaks all boundaries,
אין אן אופן פון שמחה וואס איז פורץ אלע גדרים 149,
in accordance with the fact that the redemption comes in a manner of "I will hasten it",
בהתאם מיט דעם אז די גאולה קומט באופן פון "אחישנה",
and only afterwards does it come down into "good festivals",
און ערשט דערנאך קומט עס אראפ אין "מועדים טובים",
into matters of time
אין ענינים פון זמן
(festival its meaning and interpretation is time).
(מועד ענינו ופירושו זמן).
The two manners mentioned above
די ביידע אופנים הנ"ל
(as it is stated in the Rambam and as it is stated in the verse) –
(ווי עס שטייט אין רמב"ם און ווי עס שטייט אין פסוק) –
in the service of man:
אין עבודת האדם:
There are times
עס זיינען דא זמנים
(and so it is most of the time),
(און אזוי איז רוב הזמן),
when the service must be in a manner of "the perpetual offerings in their order",
וואס די עבודה דארף זיין אין אן אופן פון "תמידים כסדרם",
that the serving man goes from the light to the heavy in order and gradation:
אז דער אדם העובד גייט מן הקל אל הכבד בסדר והדרגה:
first the nullification of the fasts,
פריער ביטול הצומות,
and afterwards
און דערנאך
(they become)
(ווערן זיי)
"festive days",
"ימים טובים",
and only afterwards does one come to the "feast",
און ערשט דערנאך קומט מען צו די "סעודה",
which then is the "days of joy and gladness".
וואס דעמולט איז דאס "ימי ששון ושמחה".
There are, however, special times when the service must be in a manner of "snatch and eat, snatch and drink":
עס זיינען אבער דא זמנים מיוחדים וואס די עבודה דארף זיין אין אן אופן פון "חטוף ואכול ואשתי 150 ":
It does not matter what was a moment beforehand,
ס'איז קיין נפק"מ ניט וואס איז געווען מיט א רגע לפנ"ז,
whether then
צי דעמולט
there was a fast or not –
איז געווען א צום אדער ניט –
because since the fast has ended, there must immediately be "snatch and eat, snatch and drink",
וויבאלד אז ס'איז געווארן אויס צום דארף גלייך זיין "חטוף ואכול חטוף ואשתי",
immediately the matter of "joy and gladness" over meat and wine;
גלייך דער ענין פון "ששון ושמחה" על הבשר ועל היין;
and only afterwards does one extend this into time,
און ערשט דערנאך איז מען דאס ממשיך אין זמן,
without measure and limitation,
אין מדידה והגבלה,
into "good festivals".
אין "מועדים טובים".
For in these two manners themselves, both services exist
וואס אין די ביידע אופנים גופא זיינען פאראן ביידע עבודות
(of "the perpetual offerings in their order" and "snatch and eat, snatch and drink").
(פון "תמידים כסדרם" און "חטוף ואכול חטוף ואשתי").
The difference between them is which service is the primary one and comes first:
דער חילוק ביניהם איז וועלכע עבודה איז דער עיקר און קומט פריער:
In the first manner, the primary one is,
אין דעם ערשטן אופן איז דער עיקר,
and it comes first,
און עס קומט פריער,
the ordered service,
די עבודה מסודרת,
"the perpetual offerings in their order",
"תמידים כסדרם",
and only afterwards does the service that is beyond measure and limitation come;
און ערשט דערנאך קומט די עבודה שלמעלה ממדידה והגבלה;
in contrast, in the second manner, the service is the primary one,
משא"כ אין דעם צווייטן אופן העבודה איז דער עיקר,
and it comes first, the
און עס קומט פריער די
(introduction of the)
(הקדמה פון די)
service of "snatch and eat, snatch and drink",
עבודה פון "חטוף ואכול חטוף ואשתי",
the service of "with all your might",
די עבודה פון "בכל מאדך 151 ",
and afterwards comes the service of the second paragraph of the Shema,
און דערנאך קומט די עבודה פון פ' שני' דקרי"ש,
"with all your hearts and with all your souls",
"בכל לבבכם ובכל נפשכם 152 ",
an ordered service,
אן עבודה מסודרת 153,
"the perpetual offerings in their order".
"תמידים כסדרם".
In these days of ours,
בימינו אלו,
and especially in these very days –
ובפרט בימים אלו ממש –
it is well known the letter from the Rebbe, of blessed memory,
איז דאך ידוע דער מכתב פון דעם רבי'ן נ"ע 154,
that now the service must be of "snatch and eat, snatch and drink":
אז איצטער דארף זיין די עבודה פון "חטוף ואכול חטוף ואשתי":
As soon as one sees a Jew who is "hungry" or "naked" of Torah and commandments –
גלייך ווי מ'דערזעט א איד וואס ער איז א "רעב" אדער אן "ערום" פון תורה ומצוות –
there must immediately be "share your bread with the hungry and bring the poor wanderer into your house",
דארף גלייך זיין "פרס לרעב לחמך ועניים מרודים תביא בית",
"when you see the naked, cover him",
"כי תראה ערום וכסיתו",
"if you see a person who has no words of Torah, bring him into your house and let him learn the Shema and prayer and let him learn a verse of Aleph-Beit every day or a halachah and urge him in the commandments
"אם ראית אדם שאין בו דברי תורה הכניסוה לביתך וילמדוה קריאת שמע ותפלה וילמדוה פסוק א' בכל יום או הלכה וזרזהו במצוות
(as he explains in Tanna Devei Eliyahu Rabbah (above, section 63)) –
(ווי ער איז מבאר אין תנא דבי אליהו רבה (כנ"ל סי"ג)) –
one must immediately grab the Jew and give him and provide him with Torah and commandments!
מ'דארף גלייך כאפן דעם אידן און אים געבן און באזארגן מיט תורה ומצוות!
And likewise it must also be regarding service in Torah and commandments for oneself –
ועד"ז דארף אויך זיין בנוגע עבודה בתומ"צ לעצמו –
that this must be a service with alacrity in a manner of "snatch and eat, snatch and drink".
אז דאס דארף זיין אן עבודה בזריזות באופן פון "חטוף ואכול חטוף ואשתי".
And through this that one does all this with alacrity,
און דורך דעם וואס מ'טוט דאס אלץ בזריזות,
both regarding oneself and regarding the other,
סיי בנוגע צו זיך און סיי בנוגע צו דעם זולת,
that one draws him in immediately into Judaism,
אז מ'ציט אים אריין גלייך אין אידישקייט,
and through this –
און דורך דעם –
into the completeness of the Torah –
אין שלימות התורה –
one makes of him with alacrity a complete Jew,
מאכט מען פון אים בזריזות א גאנצן איד,
(the completeness of the people – the people)
(שלימות העם – העם)
and one gives him a complete Torah
און מ'גיט אים א גאנצע תורה
(the completeness of the Torah),
(שלימות התורה),
and one leads him very soon,
און מ'פירט אים בקרוב ממש,
with alacrity,
בזריזות,
in the midst of the collective of Israel,
בתוככי כלל ישראל,
into a complete Land of Israel
אין א גאנצע ארץ ישראל
(the completeness of the land),
(שלימות הארץ),
in the true and complete redemption,
בגאולה האמיתית והשלימה,
through our righteous Mashiach.
