With the help of Heaven.

With the help of Heaven.
Regarding the month of Elul — the month of will and mercy1 — there is the well-known parable of the Alter Rebbe2,
of "a king in the field"3:
Before the king enters his royal
(-capital)
city and palace,
he first passes through the field
(field)
which surrounds the city,
and while he is in the field, the people of the city go out to greet the king,
and then everyone can approach him,
and the king then receives them with a pleasant countenance and a smiling face to all4,
with a satisfied and joyful face. And afterwards,
when he goes into the city —
they follow him.
So too in the month of Elul,
the Supreme One
(the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He)
is together with the Jewish people "in the field",
as they are in ordinary days and do ordinary work
(field work),
and there every Jew can greet His countenance,
and the Supreme One receives him with a pleasant countenance etc.
As is hinted in the name of the month of Elul
(as the Alter Rebbe brings there on the spot)
— the initials "I am to my beloved and my beloved is to me"5,
for "my beloved" is the Holy One, blessed be He,
and He is called "my beloved" because of His love for the Jewish people9, which love stands in revelation to every Jew in the month of Elul.
And afterwards,
in the month of Tishrei,
the Supreme One enters His "city" and "palace",
and the Jewish people follow Him
(but then they must already come with preparation etc. in order to be able to see the king10).
With this the Alter Rebbe explains why the days of the month of Elul are ordinary days
(weekdays),
not a festival,
even though then the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy shine11 — because the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy in the month of Elul is
(to every Jew as he is)
"in the field",
in an ordinary state and condition12.
But it requires explanation:
A) Both in the parable and in the moral, he does not explain a seemingly essential matter:
How does the "king" come to be in the "field" at all
(in the month of Elul)?
The place of a king is in the palace of his kingdom — not in the "field".
Moreover:
From the language of the parable
("before his entry into the city, the people of the city go out toward him etc. in the field")
it implies that the king's place initially is in the field
(for it does not say "the king goes out to the field",
as it says regarding "the people of the city"),
as if this is his natural place
(only afterwards —
he goes into the city).
B) A true parable
(according to Torah)
is a reflection of the moral as it stands above,
from which the parable below is drawn13.
Since in the parable we see that specifically in the field everyone can approach the king and the king receives everyone with a pleasant countenance etc.
(unlike in the king's palace in the city of his kingdom)
— from this there is proof
(and this is drawn from it)
that so it is in spirituality,
that by going out
(in the month of Elul)
into the "field",
into the ordinariness of the field,
every Jew can approach the Supreme One,
and He receives everyone with a pleasant countenance etc.
(unlike this in the king's palace in the month of Tishrei).
One must understand:
What is the concept of "this" in spirituality
(in the moral),
that specifically there the Supreme One reveals Himself to every Jew with a pleasant countenance etc.?
C) Why does the Alter Rebbe give specifically regarding this matter a lengthy and detailed parable
(relatively),
something not found so often in his Chassidic discourses?
It will be understood by prefacing another precision in the parable:
Even though the Alter Rebbe says that "the people of the city go out...
in the field"
(which emphasizes that their place and life is in the city,
but now they go out to the field,
and this is in order to greet the king)
— one must say,
that the explanation of this is not,
that throughout the entire time the Jewish people are in the city,
and in the month of Elul they go out to the field,
for this is the opposite of the moral:
The allegory comes to explain why the days of the month of Elul are weekdays,
i.e.
ד. ה.
(in the allegory) –
that Jews are in the "field",
in a state of weekday (chol),
when one says Tachanun,
which pertains to undesirable things,
and the novelty of Elul is the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy even in their place,
in the field.
And as simply that most days of the year are weekdays and a minority
(in number,
quantity)
are Shabbats and Festivals.
And in the majority of days - there is no revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy.
From this it is understood,
that also in the allegory the Jews are found most of the time in the "field",
in weekday-ness and worldliness. And that which the Alter Rebbe says "the townspeople go out... to the field" comes to add another thing
(as follows).
(as follows).
The explanation in this:
That Jews are in the "field" - means the general concept of the descent of the soul into the body,
that a soul which is from the "townspeople",
as every Jew begins his day,
every day,
with the explanation of the blessing:
"The soul You have placed within me is pure" - descends
("the townspeople go out")
into the "field",
into a physical and material body
(in this physical and material world),
"which in its materiality is comparable to the bodies of the nations of the world" - externally he appears like a "man of the field" even like a "man of the field" of the other side.
And to such an extent that were it not for the matter of the choice of the Most High
("and in us You chose" in the material body etc.)
there would be no difference in the materiality of the body in its essence between the body of a Jew and the bodies of the nations of the world
(were it not for the soul in the body).
That is, that from the perspective of intellect and emotions etc. - there is no advantage and difference between the "material body" of a Jew and the bodies of the nations of the world;
ד. ה. אז מצד שכל און מדות וכו' - איז ניטא קיין מעלה וחילוק צווישן דעם גוף החומרי" פון א אידן און גופי אומות העולם";
the difference is -- from the aspect that "so has Hashem chosen",
so the Most High wanted!
[This does not pertain to the wondrous advantage in the aspect of revelations (according to intellect and emotions etc.) that a Jew possesses from the aspect of his soul - but this is from the aspect of his soul,
not from the aspect of the body,
"which in its materiality is comparable to the bodies of the nations of the world".]
From this it is understood on the other hand - the greatness of the advantage and wonder of the body specifically,
the aspect of "field"
(even relative to the soul),
that specifically in it the Most High chose
(and in this consists its advantage - that the Most High chose in it)
- for true choice is only in Essence and Being,
that which has no cause preceding it, Heaven forbid
(unlike below Essence,
even in the highest levels of light etc.,
there is a tendency and a clarification and a decision - and consequently a kind of compulsion as the tendency etc. necessitates).
And so it is regarding the purpose of all creation - that the Holy One, blessed be He, desired to have a dwelling place in the lower worlds,
not in the upper worlds,
but specifically in the lower worlds,
where the physical body of a Jew is found and a Jew serves His service with the physicality of the world
(lower worlds)
- specifically there a dwelling place is made for His Essence, blessed be He.
From this emerges a fundamental difference between the love of the Most High for Jews from the aspect of their soul and the love from the aspect of their body:
The soul of a Jew has a wondrous advantage
(also relative to the body)
- from the aspect of revelations
(intellect and emotions etc.),
that the soul itself
(from the aspect of its definitions)
has a connection to Divinity to the extent that it is actually - "a veritable part of G-d above",
"You are children to Hashem your G-d". But from the aspect of these very advantages - it emerges that the soul in its essence does not have in itself
(does not need to "come to")
choice of the Most High. Therefore the love of the Most High for Jews from the aspect of the soul - is like a natural love, so to speak
(because the root of love is from a level where there is a grasp of place of a lover,
and consequently this is below the love of the Essence,
His Essence, blessed be He, which is above all cause etc.);
עצמותו ית' שלמעלה מכל סיבה כו');
in contrast, the love for the body - which has no inherent advantages and has no connection from the aspect of its definitions to Divinity - is from the aspect of the choice and love of His Essence, blessed be He.
In another style:
The soul of a Jew
("townspeople")
- reveals the highest levels in Divinity in the aspect of revelations;
- איז מגלה די העכסטע דרגות אין אלקות בבחי' הגילויים;
The body of a Jew
("man of the field")
- reveals
(points to)
His Essence, blessed be He.
And as explained regarding the essence of the coming into being of existence,
that specifically the physical existence that was created from absolute nothing and absolute naught, without any other cause or reason preceding this existence, reveals, so to speak, His Essence, for He alone, by His power and ability, can create something from nothing, etc., since His existence is from His Essence and is not caused by any reason that preceded Him, Heaven forbid.
This is not the case with the higher worlds,
in the aspect of lights, etc.,
and spirituality in general—they reveal only the aspect of the revelations within Divinity.
And in addition to this:
Specifically to a soul in a body did the Most High give the power of choice, which comes specifically from His Essence—as it is written, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us,"
that the man below has choice, in a likeness, so to speak, like the power of choice of the Most High
("like one of Us").
That is, that specifically a body below that has choice reveals the power of choice in His Essence
(because specifically His Essence,
who alone has true choice,
was able,
so to speak,
to give to another the concept of choice).
On the other hand:
Through the fact that the Most High chose the body—
there also comes to the soul
(clothed in the body)
the advantage of the choice of His Essence
(in addition to its advantages in the aspect of revelations).
With this it is understood that the place of the Most High
(the King)
is "in the field,"
where the soul clothed in the physical body of a Jew is found
("a man of the field,"
resembling in his materiality the bodies of the nations of the world)
for in the "field" is the choice of His Essence,
and the dwelling place for His Essence.
This is not the case in the King's palace in His royal city—where primarily the aspect of revelations and attributes, etc., shine.
And
ו
And therefore in the "field" is revealed the greatest love of the Most High
("and my Beloved is mine")
—the essential love that comes from His choice—for every Jew,
He receives every Jew with a pleasant countenance and shows them a smiling face,
and every Jew without exception,
even as he finds himself in his standing and situation in the "field,"
on a weekday and occupied with weekday work
(even—before he does anything in matters of holiness,
such as learning Torah and fulfilling commandments)
—for the love and choice of the Most High in the body of a Jew,
is not dependent on his,
the Jew's,
level and advantage
(in his revelations),
his understanding and comprehension in Torah,
his meticulousness in fulfilling the commandments,
rather it is a choice in the physical body
("a man of the field")
—and therefore because the Most High so desires.
On the other hand, however, the intent is,
that in addition to a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He,
where all the Essence is found—the Essence must there
(also)
be in revelation.
And regarding this, concerning a soul and body of a Jew—the intent is,
that in addition to the choice of the Essence in the body
("a man of the field"),
this must also stand in revelation
(through the soul,
"people of the city").
Therefore the order is,
that after the King is "in the field" in the month of Elul—the King goes in the month of Tishrei to His royal city
(the aspect of revelations),
and when He goes to the city, they
(all Jews)
"go after Him";
הולכים אחריו" 32;
but since this comes after the service in the "field"—the choice of the Essence in the body—there also comes to the soul the advantage of choice,
as above.
And it can be said that therefore the Alter Rebbe also adds,
that "the people of the city go out to the field"
(even though in practice Jews are found in the field,
as above)
—in order to hint:
a) The going out and descent of the soul
("people of the city")
into the body,
b) That the reason that every Jew
(even while being in the "field")
hears

(in revelation)
the illumination of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy and love of the Holy One, blessed be He, in the month of Elul is due to the root of his soul
(which is in revelation as "people of the city").
And it can be said that according to this, one will also understand why the Alter Rebbe gives a parable
(and at length regarding the details)
on the matter of the revelation of love and mercy to every Jew in the month of Elul:
The concept of a parable is—that it gives understanding of a matter to such people who cannot yet understand the allegory itself,
by explaining it to them with a parable from things that are closer and more accessible to that person.
D. H. That although this is only a parable for another thing
(the moral),
until it becomes descended from the moral
(as above),
and the essence, substance, and truth of the matter is specifically the moral
(not the parable) —
it does a wonder regarding a parable
(in relation to the moral),
that even one who is found in the lowest low
(a "man of the field"),
he has no comprehension in a matter of "city",
a spiritual matter,
and he has not yet been elevated above so that he should understand spirituality — he can, through the physical parable, grasp and understand the spiritual matter. Until he can have a feeling in it,
until — further:
it should stand before him in a revealed manner that he can see it with his eyes — "pointing with the finger and saying 'this'",
for he sees before him a physical thing from his daily life,
which is a parable for a spiritual matter which he cannot see and understand from its own essence.
As the matter is
(beginning)
in Torah:
Our Sages say that "the Torah spoke in the language of man". That is, that although the Torah is from heaven,
and even higher —
the wisdom and will of the Holy One, blessed be He,
essence and substance,
"the Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, are entirely one",
and even in the order of descent it is known the principle that "the Torah speaks primarily about the supernal and lofty matters, and secondarily about the lower ones" — but because the Torah was given below to human beings,
in order that they should study it and understand it with their physical intellect down here —
therefore "the Torah spoke in the language of man",
in their language and by explaining to them through a parable from things which they understand
(the physicality of the world),
Together with this — within this "language of man"
(as in a parable)
lies the entire intellect as it "speaks about the supernal", until,
as it were,
in essence and substance,
for the same Torah as it is one with the Holy One, blessed be He,
"the Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, are entirely one",
"from there it traveled and descended in the concealment of the levels from level to level in the descent of the worlds until it became clothed in physical things and matters of this world, etc."

"And He looked into the Torah and created the world":
So too is the order in making another understand a matter which is not yet according to his

vessels of comprehension — that one explains it to him with a parable from things which he already understands. And within this parable lies the entire moral.
And in the language of the verse — "From my flesh I perceive God":
Through my physical flesh I see,
as it were,
Elokus,
Godliness. That is, that in order that Elokus should be able to be understood until seeing with the eyes of flesh — the Supreme One created the physical body
(and human nature)
in a manner that is in the pattern of above,
"likeness to the Supernal",
in order that a person who has comprehension in the present,
dwelling only in flesh,
can through this see Elokus.
Z. From this it is understood,
that a physical parable
(and the seeing of Elokus which comes through "my flesh")
has in itself an advantage even over the moral —
because with the moral itself one could not reveal Elokus in the lowest low
(to one who does not understand the moral),
but through "my flesh" and the parable of physical things which such a person can understand — one brings a revelation of Elokus even in such a place!
And it can be said that this proves that a parable reveals a level in Elokus which is even higher than the level which is revealed through the moral. As is known that "the higher something is, the more it descends to the lowest low".
Until that through "my flesh"
(and a physical parable)
— one attains a deeper understanding in Elokus
(deeper than the understanding that one has from the moral itself),
because through understanding the matter in "my flesh",
one understands that this comes from a level in Elokus which has the power and will that this should descend
(not only into spiritual levels,
but also)
into the physicality of the world,
which reveals that this comes from His Essence,
that specifically He has the power and ability to create something from nothing. As discussed above,
that specifically the physical body —
reveals a higher level in Elokus than the soul reveals
(until that through this one also attains the advantage of the soul).
Thus, the explanation of why we find in the words of our sages, of blessed memory, etc., that when explaining a matter,
even the highest matters of the Torah and Divinity are specifically with a parable and proof from a flesh and blood being,
and not specifically from a Jew,
but also from a non-Jew,
even from impure animals of the earth,
the three impure shells, is even more understandable.
For example:
Our sages, of blessed memory, say that "Adino the Eznite" refers to King David,
that "when he would sit and engage in Torah study, he would make himself as tender as a worm" — an impure creeping thing! What is written, "Who teaches us from the beasts of the earth..."
"This is a flea..."
"Had the Torah not been given, we would have learned modesty from a cat,
(from a camel)
and theft from an ant, etc.!"
And likewise regarding a non-Jew, a wicked person:
The Gemara brings the verse, "Good news fattens the bone"
(the greatness of the elevation of the power of pleasure)
— in connection with the wicked Vespasian,
and among the wicked — who destroyed the Holy Temple!
And so on.
And the explanation of this is as follows:
Through the fact that one sees that such has become the nature of the flesh
(of a flesh and blood being)
in the world — this reveals that it originates from a higher level in Divinity than the analogue itself
(in spirituality)
brings forth.
So much so, that even if this comes forth in the nature of the flesh of the three impure shells — this reveals, as it were, an even higher level in Divinity,
for, heaven forbid, to say that the three impure shells created themselves
("Woe to them who say, 'I have made myself'"),
but certainly the Supreme One created them,
and on the contrary —
their very existence reveals His Essential Self, blessed be He, in a manner that matters of holiness cannot reveal,
because through their existence one sees that this comes from such a high level that only it can create such concealment and hiding — "these are His mighty deeds."
And therefore, a parable is given specifically from these matters — for their existence and their nature
(in particular)
is not their own,
but a revelation of the manner and will with which the Supreme One desired and created them.
With this, it is also understandable why the Alter Rebbe gives a parable
(at length and in detail)
of "the king in the field":
The parable is not specifically of a king of Israel,
but of a flesh and blood king in general
(also of the nations of the world),
each of whom has his custom and nature — to go out to the field, etc.
And this becomes a parable for the Supreme One, as it were — that in the month of Elul, "I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me,"
and this itself
("I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me")
is a parable
(from "my beloved" below)
— for the revelation of the love and choice of His Essential Self, blessed be He, in Jews, which is revealed specifically in the "field,"
the physical body in this physical world.
And based on this, the reason for bringing the parable in general is understood —
because in addition to the parable giving understanding, in "the language of man," the matter of the revelation of the attributes of mercy during the weekdays of the month of Elul —
it is even more relevant to bring it in this matter in particular,
for thereby one wishes to bring forth the revelation of the love and choice of His Essential Self, blessed be He, which is revealed specifically in the lowest depths, in the body of every individual Jew as he stands as a "man of the field"
(resembling in his materiality the bodies of the nations of the world),
that is, even as he stands in weekdays and occupies himself with weekday matters,
and his soul is not yet revealed,
and he does not yet have revelations in understanding and comprehension, etc. — to him, too, comes the revelation of the love and choice of the thirteen attributes of mercy.
Therefore, one must give him to understand according to his comprehension,
even as he is a "man of the field,"
at the level of "flesh,"
before one elevates him higher. Therefore, it is necessary to explain this matter with a parable — a parable that every Jew can understand,
of a flesh and blood king.
Furthermore:
The general content of a parable
(every parable) —
reflects the analogue in this particular matter,
that specifically in the "field"
(the lowest depths)
the revelation of the love and choice of the king occurs,
to the extent that this reveals a higher level in Divinity than the soul and all the emanations above reveal,
as mentioned above.
The matter is further emphasized in the fixed nature of this year —
that the Shabbat of blessing the month of Elul is Shabbat Parshat Re'eh:
See (vision)
The service of G-d is refined in the manner of vision. That this is the perfection of service - as is known that when one sees a thing, it is immediately verified in the person in such a way that nothing can change it.
When "see" occurs on the Shabbat of blessing Elul - it is understood that this gives a strength to the very first in the service of "the king in the field" in the month of Elul
(which is blessed in and from this Shabbat):
That in addition to that which we have the physical parable of a king of flesh and blood —
from which alone there can be a divine grasp
(as above)
- "see" gives even more strength that this should be in a manner of vision,
that is, that every Jew,
as he finds himself in "the field",
should see with the eyes of intellect,
until with eyes of flesh - the "king in the field",
the Most High.
The lesson from this for every Jew in this time:
When a person considers that his soul finds itself in the exile in the "field" of the physical and material body,
and especially in the darkness of exile,
and in the most particular detail —
in the twofold and manifold darkness of the footsteps of the Messiah,
and especially when he makes an accounting of the soul where he stands etc. - he can, G-d forbid,
fall into despair.
We have the lesson of the month of Elul and the giving of strength - that even as a person finds himself in "the field",
the Most High finds Himself with him,
"in all their affliction He is afflicted",
"they went into exile, the Divine Presence is with them etc.",
and not only that He finds Himself with him
(throughout all the days of the year)
in the manner of "behold, G-d stands over him etc. and looks upon him and examines the kidneys and heart if he serves Him properly" —
but He receives him with a pleasant countenance and a smiling face,
out of love and affection of "I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me"!
Furthermore:
The entire reason why he,
the Jew,
finds himself in "the field" - is for a higher purpose,
in order to bring out an even higher revelation
(even from the revelation of the soul in "the city"),
until - the revelation of the love and choice of the Essence and Being
(which is higher than all matters),
And also the revelation of the power of choice of the Jew,
that not looking at the concealment and hiding of "the field" he demonstrates his powers,
seeing that the "king" finds Himself with him in "the field" - he understands that this is in order to evoke in him
(the Jew)
that he should go out to receive the Most High,
that is, to do his service which the "king in the field" yearns for,
so to speak,
"the work of Your hands You desire".
And the tremendous preciousness
(the choice and love)
of the Jew in particular - is so great,
that for his sake alone the Most High is and remains in exile,
and holds millions of Jews in exile,
until that one and only Jew will finish adding the last button! And will be able to go out, and
(and the main point)
- out in actuality,
by being an example to the great congregation
(and)
(און)
"they shall return".
Even if it were speaking about the most elevated of the nation - it is also a most great wonder that for his sake all Jews should be held in exile.
All the more so when it speaks about a "man of the field",
"and a man knows his own soul". From this is understood the preciousness that every Jew has before the Most High.
And this is revealed openly —
specifically when one finds oneself in the twofold and manifold darkness of exile,
unlike in the time when the Holy Temple was standing etc.
(when Divinity stood in revelation)
- the tremendous revelation was not brought out as much.
Therefore a Jew has nothing to fall into despair, G-d forbid:
Despair is specifically without knowledge,
but when he has knowledge - he understands and sees the "king in the field" with him,
despair is not applicable,
and on the contrary:
then there is in him a most great joy.
And especially when the Most High shows him a pleasant countenance and a smiling face - it certainly becomes "as water reflects a face etc.".
And furthermore, the main point:
The knowledge and contemplation of this - evokes in a Jew that he should do the service in actuality which is connected with the month of Elul:
He should see in actuality with the eyes of intellect until with eyes of flesh - the "king in the field",
and how the king receives him with a pleasant countenance and a smiling face,
and waits - "the work of Your hands You desire" —
he should do his service to receive His countenance, may He be blessed!
What the power over this he has from this that he contemplates the physical parable of the king of flesh and blood,
through which there is an attachment to G-dliness,
and especially when it is
(also see) see.
This means simply:
In addition to this that every day there must be "I place Hashem before me always",
and all the more so to negate himself "G-d is before his eyes",
and even "fear of G-d is before his eyes"
(that is, that G-d is before his eyes,
but this does not cause him to have fear of G-d,
like a thief at a tunnel [who] calls out to the Merciful One)
— he must see before himself the "king in the field",
and how he receives him with a pleasant countenance and smiling face,
And also a main point — that the king waits for him to receive the Supernal One through doing his service — the service of the month of Elul —
in the three pillars: Torah, service, and acts of kindness, and the service of repentance,
as is hinted in the acronym of the word "Elul",
And also
(and the main point)
in the matters that hasten the true and complete redemption
(which is also hinted in the acronym "Elul"),
including and especially — the spreading of the wellsprings outward.
And this will bring the redemption in actuality —
(after)
on Rosh Chodesh Elul,
the coming days will automatically be Messianic days and redemptive days,
And one will
(automatically)
perform the mitzvah of Hakhel in the coming year — in the third Holy Temple,
and with joy and goodness of heart.
[Completions to the above talks]
[In explanation of the details of the parable of the king in the field]:
It is understood that just as in every matter in Torah —
the veteran student must come and reveal new points and details in the parable. Therefore, not all details are explicit in the parable —
so that the veteran student should come and reveal the details through his toil.
[Conclusion of the talk]:
From this is understood the superiority of the holy Shabbat Mevarchim Elul over other holy Shabbat Mevarchim and over other Shabbats:
Although every Shabbat has within itself a most lofty superiority,
to the extent that it is "sanctified and established" from the Essence and Being —
there is added in this Shabbat Mevarchim Elul,
that in addition to this that also this Shabbat is "sanctified and established" from above,
it also has the superiority of Shabbat Mevarchim which comes through the service of man —
through this that a person gathers together with another nine Jews,
one can bless the month with blessing etc.,
and bless an entire month
(not only the days of the week,
which are blessed from each Shabbat),
and which month —
the month of Elul,
when the "king" is found in the field,
the revelation of the love and choice of His Essence, may He be blessed, toward every one down here below.
As emphasized in the name of the month
[which enlivens and brings about the thing,
and expresses its content] —
Elul —
the name which is mentioned in the blessing of the month "Rosh Chodesh Elul on the day etc."]:
"Elul" is an acronym for "I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me". This expresses the revelation of love
("my beloved")
of the Supernal One toward the Jewish people.
That in this itself one also sees how the revelation of love is specifically down below
(in the "field"):
In the blessing of the month, one does not mention the month as it is called in the Written Torah by ordinal number
(the sixth month),
but specifically the name of Elul,
from the names that came up with them from Babylon,
in exile. Until —
that in documents one writes specifically the name "Elul".
On the other hand:
Specifically in this name that came up with them from Babylon
(Elul)
it is revealed how the month is connected with "I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me" —
the revelation of the love of the Supernal One toward the Jewish people.
And correspondingly, there is also the superiority in general of the words of the Scribes over the words of Torah
(in our case —
the name Elul from the words of the Scribes over the name in the Written Torah) —
that on one side, the words of the Scribes are lower than the words of Torah,
and most enactments and safeguards etc. of the Scribes were added specifically in the time of the Second Temple,
because of the decline of the generations;
מפני ירידת הדורות;
but on the other hand, it is said that "beloved" and "more stringent" "are the words of the Scribes more than the words of Torah",
this has within it a special endearment and love,
and also a special stringency
[both extremes —
beloved and more stringent).
And correspondingly, the enactments and safeguards of the Scribes indicate the greatest love of the Supernal One toward the Jewish people.
The two extremes are also seen in the days of the month of Elul:
On one side, they are specifically weekdays and one says Tachanun then
(as above),
Along with this, then the "King in the field" is present,
and one says "LeDavid Hashem Ori" every day,
which indicates the revelation of the light of His countenance, may He be blessed, of the King in the field.
And especially since the days of the month of Elul are "days of favor" —
then it was,
on Rosh Chodesh Elul,
the ascent of Moses to the mountain for the last forty days which are days of favor,
to receive the latter tablets.
The matter is emphasized further in the determination of Rosh Chodesh Elul in this year —
"on the third day and on the fourth day"
(as one says in the blessing of the month):
"On the third day" —
"in which it was doubled that it is good",
a revelation of double good and double love.
"And on the fourth day" —
"on which the luminaries were hung",
the "two great luminaries",
and afterwards there was the descent and diminution of the "small luminary",
"go and diminish yourself",
but on condition that it will ascend to a higher ascent —
"a female shall surround a man",
the quality of penitents.
And furthermore, the main point —
the main matter of the month of Elul is,
as one says in the blessing of the month —
"for salvation and for consolation",
and especially since this comes after the consolation and double consolation in the month of Menachem Av,
and one concludes "and let us say Amen",
which indicates the completion and perfection and fulfillment of the matter in actual practice,
That already on this Rosh Chodesh Elul —
it should already be "for salvation and for consolation" in actuality,
in the true and complete redemption,
And especially since it is also a year of Shemittah,
"a Sabbath for Hashem",
and a preparation for the year of Hakhel —
this gives further power that one should go to greet the day that is entirely Shabbat and rest etc.,
and fulfill the commandment of Hakhel in the third Holy Temple.
And as mentioned —
the redemption and building of the third Holy Temple should already be on this Shabbat Mevarchim Elul in the year of Shemittah,
and certainly on Rosh Chodesh Elul,
the coming days of the month of Elul will be
(instead of weekdays) —
Moshiach days,
and furthermore —
redemption days,
one will automatically fulfill the commandment of Hakhel in the coming year in the third Holy Temple,
speedily in our days, literally literally,
and not later even for the blink of an eye.
In addition to the aforementioned common element in Shabbat Mevarchim Elul every year,
there is also a special lesson from the special determinations of this year.
That also this lesson is drawn out over all the days of the year,
as discussed many times —
but nevertheless, it stands emphasized and revealed in the determinations of this year.
Like the innovation that an elder student innovates —
that although this was given to Moses from Sinai,
it is nevertheless an innovation that came out revealed through the elder student in his generation,
and from there it is drawn out to the generations after him and before him.
With this, however, the question arises —
what is the practical difference in actuality:
Since the lesson is drawn out for all times - what is the practical difference in actuality that one learns it from today's determination etc.?
The practical difference is simply —
and a most great practical difference:
This demonstrates the preciousness of the time and moment that is worthy and auspicious,
and consequently —
the practical difference in actual deed,
how one must utilize every moment of such a precious time!
Shabbat Mevarchim Elul in this year occurs —
on Shabbat Parshat Re'eh. And this is indeed a fundamental matter —
as is known the saying of the old Rebbe that one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion.
And during the days of the month —
this is in the month
(Menachem Av).
The matter in Parshat Re'eh:
Although in the portion there are a multitude of matters without end,
and every detail is also without end,
because it is a part of the essence,
and one who grasps a part of the essence is as if he grasps the entire essence,
and the essence is without limit —
Nevertheless, the content of the entire portion is expressed in its name "Re'eh".
The matter of "Re'eh" in the service of Hashem —
is the service in the manner of sight. And this is the ultimate perfection of service.
Beginning as this is in Torah:
The perfection of Torah study is in the manner of sight,
as it will be in the future to come.
The superiority in this regarding actual practice —
is explained with an example in actual deed from the AriZal
[as discussed above,
that a parable explains the matter to everyone]:
The AriZal once saw a matter in two or three hours that to express it in speech would have required sixty or eighty years
(and sixty or eighty years of the AriZal)!
When one brings it down as an example regarding the study of Torah in a manner of seeing,
(as it will be by every Jew in the future to come) —
it is a proof that this is not the halachah of Mashiach,
but something similar to this applies to every Jew in his study of Torah and in his service of G-d now.
The concept of the twentieth day of the month
(Menachem Av) —
can be extracted in a revealed and clear manner from "Torah Or",
from the Torah classes of that day.
And especially the Torah classes that came from the enactment of the Nasi of our generation,
and with emphasis when one finds himself in his synagogue and his study hall —
the classes of Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya,
and in our matter —
the class of Tehillim of the twentieth day of the month
(as the Nasi of our generation connected it also with the Baal Shem Tov):
In the current class of Tehillim, one recites the fifteen "Song of Ascents".
The concept in this:
A song of ascents indicates a matter of ascent.
All the more so when one emphasizes that this is "Song of Ascents".
And here it is added,
that it is not merely one ascent,
but ascent after ascent,
until fifteen ascents —
fifteen "Song of Ascents". And not in a manner that they are separate ascents,
but each ascent itself contains within it another ascent.
This is like it was in the Holy Temple,
as the Rambam writes that "the entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain"
[as discussed in a farbrengen previously],
and afterwards there were in the Holy Temple ascents upon ascents,
as he enumerates there in detail.
That is to say, that even though the Holy Temple itself was on the Temple Mount,
there were there itself ascents upon ascents,
until fifteen ascents —
"The fifteen Songs of Ascents were said by David for the Levites to say on the fifteen steps that ascend from the Women's Courtyard to the Men's Courtyard, etc."
Another concept in "Song of Ascents":
It states in the teachings of our sages that when Jacob was in the exile of Laban —
where Laban sought to uproot everything —
he withstood it all through his recitation there of the fifteen "Song of Ascents";
איז ער דאס אלץ בייגעשטאנען דורך דעם וואס ער האט דארטן געזאגט די ט"ו "שיר המעלות";
"A Song of Ascents of David, had it not been for G-d who was with us, let Israel now say,"
Israel the elder
(Jacob our father)
[That is to say, that even though "Song of Ascents" became a part of Torah —
it is called by the name of the veteran student who innovated it —
"Israel the elder"].
The lesson from both matters —
"See" and "Song of Ascents"
(the twentieth day of the month):
One is aroused and impelled regarding the fulfillment of the mission of the Nasi of our generation in spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings outward,
as the Baal Shem Tov heard from Mashiach in the Hall of Mashiach
(the Hall that is called by his name) —
that "when your wellsprings spread outward" will be "the Master will come".
One has the lesson from "See" —
that this mission must stand before his eyes in a manner of seeing,
and through this —
the actual service and fulfillment of the mission
(the spreading of Judaism and the spreading of the wellsprings outward)
will also be in a manner of seeing,
until he will also effect upon the other Jew that by him this should also be in a manner of seeing —
as is known in the books of education,
and about this it is brought in the discourses and especially in the talks of the Nasi of our generation —
that true education is when the student becomes an example like the educator. And in our matter:
Just as the service of the educator is in a manner of seeing —
he effects that it should be so also by the student.
And the service in the manner of seeing itself —
one may not remain standing in one place,
but it must be in a manner of "Song of Ascents",
so that each ascent arouses and brings out a more elevated ascent.
And the fifteen (T"V) ascents
("Song of Ascents")
must stand before him in a revealed manner,
in a manner of seeing, similar to and as an example of how it will be in the future to come —
when there will be the revelation of the aspect of Y"V
(in gematria fifteen*),
which stands from the side of the attribute in a manner of "the hidden things are for Hashem our God" —
it will then be revealed,
as our Sages said: "Just as it is written, so it is read,"
until then there will be the revelation of the aspect of Y"V within the aspect of V"H
("and the revealed things,"
V"H —
ו"ה —
revealed things),
and it will become two times Y"V —
as explained in the writings of the Ariza"l,
that in the future to come the name Havayah will be in the manner of two times Y"V
(the Vav of V"H will become a Yud),
"On that day shall Havayah be one"
[one must have an explanation of how there will be a change in the name Havayah —
for seemingly the name Havayah (Y"V and V"H) is the explicit name and the unique name and the essential name,
so how will a Vav become a Yud,
and so forth].
Thus
כ
And in the service:
V"H refers to the actual service of Torah and commandments,
and Y"V refers to love and fear.
In this time, however, there is the "hand that was sent forth against Your Sanctuary,"
and "hand upon the throne of Y"V" —
"His name is not complete and His throne is not complete until the name of Amalek is blotted out," Amalek
(in gematria doubt)
which conceals and separates between the Y"V and V"H,
and in general —
between Divinity and the world,
and within Divinity itself —
between the Y"V and V"H.
The service consists of this,
that when one sees in another Jew a matter of separation, heaven forbid, between him and Divinity,
or a separation between his love and fear
(Y"V)
(י"ה)
and the fulfillment of Torah and commandments
(V"H),
(ו"ה),
or any matter of separation —
one must endeavor to unify the two,
until revealing the aspect of Y"V within V"H,
so that it becomes two times Y"V.
And through the service now —
one will soon actually merit to the study of Torah in a manner of seeing in the future to come,
and to the revelation of the aspect of Y"V,
two times Y"V,
And the fulfillment of the prophecy —
"And I will restore your judges as at first,"
the "Judges and officers shall you appoint in all your gates" which one will soon recite in the Minchah prayer —
"Hashem your God will enlarge your territory,"
That initially the Sanhedrin of the future to come
("your judges as at first")
will be in Tiberias —
good is its sight,
and from there they will be transferred —
into the Holy Land itself —
to the Temple,
to the Chamber of Hewn Stone in Jerusalem,
"the city of the great King" 45*,
the essence of the Holy Land,
on the Temple Mount in the Holy Temple,
to the Chamber of Hewn Stone,
Speedily in our days, literally,

It is well known the discourse in Likkutei Dibburim regarding the conduct in Lubavitch beginning from the Shabbat of blessing Elul —
a discourse that was said in a place that was far from Lubavitch,
and also a completely different time.
In that discourse he also speaks about the various discourses that our Nesiim said on the Shabbat of blessing Elul,
and among them —
discourses that began with the opening words "See, I place before you today,"
and also —
the discourse beginning "I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine"
(on the Shabbat of blessing Elul,
even before the month of Elul itself).
Discourse (in the manner of a talk)
beginning "I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine."
It is also customary to dwell upon a matter in Rashi on the weekly Torah portion,
a matter in the notes of my father,
a matter in the daily study of the Rambam,
and a matter in Pirkei Avot
(according to the custom of "some who are accustomed" to study Pirkei Avot "all the Sabbaths of the summer"),
and particularly that on this Shabbat one studies the sixth chapter,
the conclusion of Pirkei Avot —
as it is printed in the prayer books.
Regarding Rashi, several matters were raised. However, one cannot explain all matters at once,
so we will select a few of them,
and among them —
a question why Rashi does not explain a matter that requires explanation in the plain meaning of the verse,
and also a matter that Rashi does explain,
but it requires explanation according to the view of the commentators.
One paused on what is stated in our portion "Do not listen to the words of that prophet or to that dreamer of dreams, for the L-rd your G-d is testing you to know whether you love the L-rd your G-d, etc."
And one asked:
Why does Rashi not pause on the simple question
(on which other commentators of Scripture pause,
the Ramban,
Sforno,
and the Radak briefly) —
what is the meaning of "to know,"
does the Most High not already know "whether you love, etc.,"
so why is it necessary to come to a special miracle that a prophet should come and give a "sign or wonder" —
is it not a principle that "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not perform a miracle for no reason"?!
The commentators explain that this "to know" does not refer to the Most High,
but rather to the Jews
(those undergoing the test).
But if Rashi learns thus —
he should have explained.
One also paused on that which Rashi explains on the verse "And you shall spend the money for whatever your soul desires, for cattle, for sheep, for wine, for strong drink, and for whatever your soul asks of you":
"For whatever your soul desires — a general principle,
for cattle, for sheep, for wine, for strong drink — a detail,
and for whatever your soul asks of you —
it returned and made a general principle,
just as the detail is explicitly the offspring of the land and fit for human consumption, etc."
And one asked:
Rashi is not a book of laws —
so why does Rashi bring the entire matter of general principle, detail, and general principle,
and why does Rashi here give an explanation at all, especially since he does not complete the matter
(as it is stated in the Sifrei),
he only writes "etc."?
At the end of our portion, on the verse "And you shall be only joyful," Rashi explains:
"According to its simple meaning, this is not an expression of command but an expression of promise,
and according to its Talmudic interpretation, they learned from here to include the nights of the last Festival day for joy."
One asked:
a) Why does Rashi bring a second interpretation,
and especially that this is an interpretation "according to its Talmudic interpretation"? b) What is the meaning of "the nights of the last Festival day":
does this mean not only Sukkot but also Pesach and Shavuot,
or only Sukkot,
and if only Sukkot —
why specifically?
And as will be explained below.
On the Zohar of today's portion there are no notes from Father;
אויף דעם זהר פון היינטיקע פרשה זיינען ניטא קיינע הערות פון טאטן;
but in his notes on Tractate Kiddushin he explains, according to Kabbalah, the matter of the grant in our portion,
"You shall surely grant him from your flock, from your threshing floor, and from your winepress." One must still understand the lesson from this regarding action.
And as will be explained below.
In today's chapter there is a matter which has not yet been discussed. And it is in that which is stated:
"Beauty, strength, wealth, honor, wisdom, old age, gray hair, and children, etc., these are the seven qualities that the Sages enumerated for the righteous, all of them were fulfilled in Rabbi and in his sons." And he brings proofs for this,
and on the matter of "honor" and "old age" he brings the proof from the verse "And the moon shall be confounded and the sun shall be ashamed, for the L-rd of Hosts shall reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and before His elders shall be honor."
One must understand:
The proof from the verse is from the words "and before His elders shall be honor" —
why does one also bring the beginning of the verse?
One cannot answer that one does not wish to bring a half verse
(due to the principle that "any verse that Moses did not divide,
we do not divide it") —
because we see in many places,
and also earlier in Pirkei Avot,
that one brings a half verse. For example —
earlier in the Mishnah "And from where [do we derive] even three
(the Divine Presence dwells among them)
as it is said 'In the midst of judges He judges'"
(and does not bring the beginning of the verse —
"G-d stands in the congregation of G-d").
And similarly earlier "Ten who sit, etc., as it is said 'G-d stands in the congregation of G-d'"
(and does not bring the end of the verse).
One cannot distinguish that there he brings only a half verse,
because the second half is a contradiction:
"G-d stands in the congregation of G-d" is a proof for ten,
whereas "In the midst of judges He judges" is a proof for three —
Because also in our case the beginning of the verse
("And the moon shall be confounded and the sun shall be ashamed, for the L-rd of Hosts shall reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem")
is a contradiction,
to the matter that is discussed in the Baraitha:
The Baraitha concludes that "these are the seven qualities that the Sages enumerated for the righteous, all of them were fulfilled in Rabbi and in his sons",
i.e., that "and before His elders shall be honor" is fulfilled in this time
(in the time of the Mishnah)
in Rabbi and in his sons;
ברבי ובבניו;
whereas the beginning of the verse "And the moon shall be confounded, etc." is a prophecy for the future to come,
and that is not present in this time!
According to this, the question becomes even stronger:
The beginning of the verse
("And the moon shall be confounded, etc.")
is not merely superfluous —
rather, it is seemingly a contradiction to the matter?
And as will be explained below.
In the current lesson of the Rambam, there is a wonder upon which the commentators do not focus:
The Rambam writes:
"Although all the statutes of the Torah are decrees...
it is fitting to contemplate them, and whatever you can give a reason for, give a reason,
for the early Sages said that King Solomon understood most of the reasons for all the statutes of the Torah, etc."
Based on this, one must ponder the reason for the distinction between statutes and ordinances in general? As is known, there is a fundamental difference between statutes and ordinances —
statutes are commandments that have no reason in the intellect,
and ordinances are rational commandments. As the Rambam himself explains,
and emphasizes regarding sacrifices that "they are among the statutes,"
and similarly regarding the laws of ritual baths,
"that impurity is not mud or excrement that can be removed by water,"
rather, this is a statute.
And this distinction is relevant to practical law. For example:
statutes must be fulfilled in a manner of "I wish I could, but what can I do, for my Father in heaven has decreed upon me,"
in contrast to ordinances, which must be in a manner of "I do not desire" —
as the Rambam explains in his Eight Chapters. And also in his book of laws —
an actual law —
that "statutes I have decreed for you, and you have no permission to question them."
Thus the question arises:
Since regarding statutes as well there is
(and one can and should give)
a reason, do they not seemingly become ordinances?
[To add,
that specifically in the Eight Chapters —
where the discussion concerns the matter of character traits —
the Rambam distinguishes between statutes and ordinances (as above),
in contrast to his book of laws —
where the distinctions of laws between statutes and ordinances should be heard,
and it is a novelty to say that even statutes have a reason and they are "to correct opinions and straighten all actions" —
there he innovates this!].
And as will be explained below.
In practical terms, we see from the aforementioned Rambam,
that in every matter where one can contemplate and find a reason, "it is fitting to contemplate them, and whatever you can give a reason for, give a reason,"
and to delve into it and have enjoyment in it.
Similarly, it is understandable regarding the matter of "great is drinking that brings close,"
and the "note that descended from heaven" regarding the greatness of the elevation of a gathering of Jews,
that this accomplishes more than the angel Michael can accomplish —
one must fulfill this with fervor and enjoyment.
The explanation in Rashi regarding "for the Lord your God is testing you to know":
Since the Omnipresent knows "whether you love [Him],"
one must say that the Omnipresent made the test —
"the Lord your God is testing you" —
not for Himself, but for the sake that it should be "to know" for another.
As is simply understood,
that the test came from the Omnipresent:
The Omnipresent brought it about that "a prophet will arise among you" and he will show a "sign or wonder,"
because surely the false prophet does not have the power to do this on his own
(as explained in the Midrash that indeed a sign and wonder was seen);
(וכמבואר במדרש אז מ'האט טאקע געזען אן אות ומופת);
and similarly, "one who dreams a dream" surely also comes from the Omnipresent —
for a person is not a master over himself to dream.
[The Gemara indeed says in Berachot,
that when one thinks about a matter during the day, one dreams about it at night —
but: a)
the five-year-old has not yet studied the tractate of Berachot,
b) even if he knows about the matter in the Gemara —
the five-year-old sees in himself, however, that he can think all day about a candy —
and it is not necessarily that he will dream about it at night!].
One must say that by making the test, the Omnipresent had an intention that for another there should be "to know whether you love the Lord your God."
And Rashi does not need to explain who this is —
because he relies on the fact that the five-year-old student of Scripture will remember what he previously learned regarding the first test in the Torah —
the test of the Binding at Mount Moriah by Abraham our father.
And even though this is in the Chumash Bereishit
(and now we are in the Chumash Devarim) —
Rashi relies that the child will remember it,
because the test of the Akeidah is a great wonder and evokes a storm,
that the Almighty commands Avraham Avinu to sacrifice "your son, your only one." After Avraham Avinu had barely begged the Almighty, as it were, for a child,
and when he already had a son at one hundred years,
the Almighty commands him to slaughter him!... —
Consequently, an impression remains from this upon the five-year-old.
Therefore the five-year-old for Mikra remembers that after the test of the Akeidah it says "Now I know that you are a G-d-fearing man,"
and Rashi explains:
"From now on I have what to answer the Satan and the nations who wonder what is My love for you, etc."
That is, that even though it says "Now I know"
(which is a stronger expression than "to know" in our portion),
Rashi explains that this is not for the Almighty to know
(because the Almighty knows without this),
but rather for the Satan and the nations to know,
consequently "I have what to answer the Satan and the nations, etc."
And likewise the explanation in our portion regarding "to know whether you love"
is that this does not refer to the Almighty but to the people around. And Rashi does not need to repeat this, relying on his explanation regarding "Now I know."
The explanation in Rashi regarding general principle, detail, and general principle:
When the five-year-old learns the verse —
a question arises for him in the plain meaning of the text:
After it says in the verse "And you shall give the money for whatever your soul desires" —
it is not understandable why the verse needs to continue "for cattle, for sheep, etc., and for whatever your soul asks of you" —
is this not already included in "for whatever your soul desires"?
And the difficulty compels Rashi to say an explanation,
that this is written in the manner of general principle, detail, and general principle,
in order to teach that "just as the detail is explicit, etc."
(not like a general principle and detail,
which teaches that the general principle includes only what is in the detail).
That is, that Rashi says this explanation here not in order to give the halachah of the matter
(because Rashi is not a book of halachot,
as mentioned above),
but rather to explain the plain meaning of the text
(the continuation of the verse after "for whatever your soul desires").
And therefore Rashi does not continue and conclude the matter,
because he does not come here to state a halachah,
but only to answer the verbosity in the verse,
that this is in the manner of general principle, detail, and general principle in order to teach that "just as the detail is explicit, etc."
The matter in the notes of my father:
My father explains,
"And it can be said that the matters written regarding the grant,
your flock, your threshing floor, your winepress,
they are opposite the intellects."
That is, that even though he is a Hebrew slave or maidservant —
it is not enough to give him only from his own attributes and powers that are below this,
but one must give him from the intellects.
The lesson from this in the service of G-d:
One gives a grant to a Hebrew slave and a Hebrew maidservant.
And even though today this reality does not exist in practice —
it is, however, present here in spiritual service in each and every Jew,
[And as this is regarding all matters of the Torah,
that they exist in every Jew in spiritual service,
even though according to the revealed aspect this is only for a certain type. For example —
the division of Kohen, Levi, and Yisrael:
according to the revealed aspect, a Kohen is only one who was born a Kohen,
unlike one who was born a Levi or Yisrael, he is not a Kohen (except for Pinchas,
who became a Kohen afterward,
from which there is also a lesson in service,
as explained elsewhere].
But from the aspect of spiritual service —
every Jew has the service of a Kohen and Levi],
as explained in the discourses of Parshat Mishpatim,
and especially in the "very esteemed discourse" of the old Rebbe
(as the Tzemach Tzedek writes) —
Hebrew slave, and Canaanite slave in the service of each and every Jew.
In this comes the commandment of the grant,
and its meaning in service:
When one deals with a Jew,
for every Jew has within him the aspect of Hebrew slave and the aspect of Hebrew maidservant —
one must give him a "grant,"
and in this it is not enough that one give him only attributes,
or levels below this —
but one must give him "your flock, your threshing floor, your winepress,"
which are "opposite the intellects,"
not only from one intellect,
but from all three intellects,
Chochmah, Binah, Daat.
In this is emphasized the matter of love of Israel —
that one gives a Jew not only attributes and powers that are below,
but also intellects.
One can also say:
The concept of "granting"
is revealed through the teachings of Chassidus —
what the innovation of Chassidus upon Kabbalah is,
that Chassidus explains every concept in the intellect,
Chochmah, Binah, and Daas,
and so too regarding the concept of the three types of slaves
Chassidus explains each type and the service connected with each type —
in the intellect,
Chochmah, Binah
(Rechovos HaNahar)
and Daas,
the source of the emotions,
and from there it is drawn into the emotions until into actual service in thought, speech, and deed.
It follows that Chassidus reveals the concept of "granting" in spiritual service —
the drawing down of the intellect
(Chabad) into
(the service of)
a Hebrew slave and a Hebrew maidservant.
The explanation in Pirkei Avos:
Our Sages of blessed memory say that "today is to do them and tomorrow to receive their reward"
(as is also alluded to in Pirkei Avos).
That is, that the reward in the World to Come is dependent upon the service in this world.
And based on this, one can say the reason why the Baraisa also brings the beginning of the verse "And the moon shall be confounded and the sun shall be ashamed, for the Lord of Hosts shall reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem" —
because with this the Baraisa alludes
(in clear and lucid language like the language of the Mishnah),
that through "and before His elders is glory" today
(in this world),
one will receive the reward in the World to Come that "and the moon shall be confounded, etc."
According to this, however, the order in the verse is not so smooth,
that first the reward is stated and afterwards the service that brings the reward.
Therefore, one can say a second interpretation —
that the concept of "and the moon shall be confounded, etc." is included in the concept of "and before His elders is glory." In a different style:
The honor that is given to elders —
an elder is one who has acquired wisdom —
because of their study of Torah is to such an extent,
that "the moon shall be confounded and the sun shall be ashamed"
(in this world),
because even though they also receive honor from Jews
(in a manner permitted according to the Torah)
at the time of Kiddush Levanah and Birkas HaChamah,
it does not, however, at all compare to the honor that the elders receive
[as explained in the Gemara the kal vachomer that if the Torah itself receives great honor, all the more so those who study Torah],
so much so that for the moon and sun this is entirely "disgrace" and "shame."
The explanation in Rashi on the verse "and you shall be only joyful" —
and with an introduction of a few more questions:
A) Rashi gives a rule that "all 'ach' and 'rak' in the Torah are limitations." And based on this —
how does Rashi write that "only joyful" comes "to include the nights of the last Festival day"?!
And also according to the first interpretation
(according to its simple meaning) —
the "ach" is not understandable. B) "Nights of the Festival" —
who mentioned it? C) What is the meaning of "nights of the Festival" —
the night after the Festival or the night before the Festival?
D) Whether the amplification of "only joyful"
(comes to include the nights of the last Festival day for joy)
is only regarding Sukkos,
or also regarding the other Festivals —
whether Pesach which also has a last Festival day
(being a Festival of seven days),
and even Shavuos
(which is only one day) —
is also a question regarding the night of Shavuos.
What here they had mashed together potatoes and beets,
and they wanted to make a "compilation" of this concept. And to explain that this applies to all Festivals and that "nights of the Festival" means the night after the Festival.
The matter, however, is —
that this is entirely untenable. Because the interpretation in Rashi is simply:
"Nights of the last Festival day" simply means —
not the last night after the Festival,
rather the night of the Festival,
the night before the last Festival day.
And this concept exists only in Sukkos,
because only Sukkos has a last Festival day —
Shemini Atzeres,
as we learned earlier,
that after the seven days of Sukkos is "on the eighth day, it shall be a solemn assembly for you",
which is a "Festival in its own right",
but not so Pesach and Shavuos do not have a last Festival day
(that comes after the Festival of Pesach and Shavuos).
And after this introduction, one will understand the words of Rashi:
Rashi finds it difficult why here the conclusion "and you shall be only joyful" is stated at all —
after the command "and you shall rejoice in your Festival" was already stated earlier.
Therefore, he explains,
that "according to its simple meaning, this is not a language of command but a language of promise",
it comes to add a promise that one will indeed be joyful.
The explanation is however difficult,
because we find nowhere in the Torah that one should come to add a promise after the commandment
(we do not find it by the commandment "If you walk in My statutes",
and not by the commandment of Shabbat and the like).
Now why by the commandment "and you shall rejoice in your festival" of Sukkot does the verse add a promise
("and you shall be only joyful").
[One could say that the promise ("and you shall be only joyful") also applies to the joy of Shavuot (in addition to the commandment of joy on Sukkot) —
because also by Shavuot the commandment "and you shall rejoice" is stated before it;
ווייל אויך בא שבועות שטייט לפנ"ז דער ציווי "ושמחת" 89;
but one cannot say that this applies to Pesach —
because there a commandment of joy is not mentioned].
Therefore Rashi gives a second explanation —
that "according to its Talmudic interpretation they learned from here to include the nights of the last festival day for joy":
According to the above that "the last festival day" refers to Shemini Atzeret,
as we learned earlier that Shemini Atzeret comes in continuation of the seven days of Sukkot —
a question arises here:
Since the commandment "and you shall rejoice" is stated here only regarding the seven days of Sukkot
(until it mentions "seven days" twice,
both at the beginning of the matter and at the conclusion),
and Shemini Atzeret is not mentioned at all —
it seemingly follows that on Shemini Atzeret there is no commandment of joy.
Rashi says —
that "according to its Talmudic interpretation" "and you shall be only joyful" comes to include "the nights of the last festival day for joy" —
that also on the night of Shemini Atzeret there is an obligation of joy.
And this also corresponds with the fact that "akh" is a limitation and not an amplification —
because on Sukkot there are additional matters besides the matter of joy
(sitting in the sukkah,
taking the four species, etc.);
נטילת ד' מינים וכו');
and "and you shall be only joyful" excludes all these matters from Shemini Atzeret except for the matter of joy.
Nevertheless, a question still remains:
If the obligation of joy is also on Shemini Atzeret —
why is it not stated explicitly in the verse
(as it is stated explicitly regarding the seven days of Sukkot),
and only hinted at in "only joyful"?
Therefore Rashi specifies "the nights of the last festival day" —
that this speaks only about the night of Shemini Atzeret,
where the obligation of joy then is due to the fact that it comes in continuation of the seven days of Sukkot
(not as an obligation of Shemini Atzeret in and of itself),
unlike the day of Shemini Atzeret where there is no obligation. Therefore it can be hinted at in "only joyful"
(unlike if the commandment were on the day of Shemini Atzeret,
i.e., not merely as a continuation of Sukkot —
it would have had to be stated explicitly in the verse).
The explanation in the Rambam —
one must say:
After the Rambam writes that "it is fitting to contemplate them
(the statutes)
and whatever reason you can give, give a reason for it" —
he brings an example of this from "it and its substitute shall be holy" and "if the one who consecrates redeems his house, he shall add a fifth of the silver of your valuation to it",
and explains the reasons for this,
that this is "in order to subdue his inclination and correct his character traits"
(as explained there,
and as follows),
and then the Rambam concludes:
"And most of the laws of the Torah are nothing but counsels from afar from the Great Counselor to correct the character traits and straighten all actions." He brings two verses "counsels from afar" and "the Great Counselor".
That is, that the reason for the statutes is a "distant" or "great" reason —
in order to understand them one must arrive at "counsels from afar" or "the Great Counselor".
[And it can be said that these two proofs in the Rambam —
correspond to the two examples that the Rambam explains:
The reason for the law of the fifth is explained by the Rambam,
because "the Torah penetrated to the end of man's thought, etc., that man's nature tends to increase his possessions and to be sparing with his money,
and even though he vowed and consecrated, perhaps he has reconsidered and regretted and will redeem it for less than its value,
the Torah said: if he redeems for himself, he shall add a fifth".
To this reason and logic, human intellect cannot arrive on its own.
Rather, to this one must arrive specifically at the "Great Counselor" of the Torah,
which "the Torah penetrated to the end of man's thought that man's nature tends to increase his possessions, etc., perhaps he has reconsidered and regretted and will redeem it for less than its value",
and to such an extent —
that even if there are other people who will possibly buy it for more money,
it affects him so much,
that he will also confuse them,
as long as he can get it.
Afterwards, the Rambam brings another example:
"If one consecrates an animal with sanctity of the body, perhaps he will reconsider, and since he cannot redeem it, he will exchange it for a lesser one.
And if you give him permission to exchange the bad for the good, he will exchange the good for the bad and say it is good.
Therefore, the text closed the matter before him so that he should not exchange, etc."
For this
(to this reason and rationale)
it is no longer sufficient merely "Great of counsel"
(which is indeed "great" but still of the same type and value) —
because in order to be able to descend to the depth of man's thought and foresee,
that "if you give him permission to exchange the bad for the good" —
which ostensibly proves that he has a nature to give to the sanctuary —
he may come to "exchange the good for the bad" —
a change from one extreme to the other —
one must reach for this "counsels from afar".
And based on this, one can say the distinction between chukim and mishpatim:
The reason that "you can give" in chukim is
(in the language of the Rambam in the continuation)
a "distant" or "great" reason. And therefore they are chukim
(unlike in mishpatim, where one can understand the reasons by oneself with intellect,
one does not need to reach "counsels from afar" and "Great of counsel").
However, the explanation is not entirely sufficient —
because the Rambam writes nevertheless regarding chukim "whatever reason you can give for it, give a reason"?
Therefore, there is another matter:
In the Guide for the Perplexed, the Rambam writes that the details of the commandments
(also of mishpatim)
have no reason
[and regarding this, the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeret HaKodesh. In this, one sees a correspondence between Nigleh and Chassidus].
And based on this, it will be difficult, ostensibly, that in all the commandments
(in all of which there are details) —
there is the matter of a decree —
"A decree I have decreed."
The explanation in this is,
that the distinction between mishpatim and chukim consists in this —
whether the reason
(that is in the commandment)
or the chukah prevails and decides:
In chukim —
the chukah prevails over the reason,
and in mishpatim —
the reason prevails over the chukah.
And the matter
(that the chukah prevails over the reason) —
can be in two ways:
(a) The multitude of details
(in the commandment)
that have no reason prevails over the general principles of the commandment that have a reason. As in sacrifices,
which "are among the chukim",
that even though the general principle of the matter has a reason
(that the actions that are done with the sacrifice should truly have been done with the person,
only through the kindness of the Creator was the sacrifice taken in his place),
nevertheless,
since the details of the laws that have no reason are numerous,
this is in the category of a chukah;
איז דאס בגדר פון א חוקה;
(b) And above this —
that the general principle and essence of the matter has no reason,
like immersion from impurities,
which "the impurity is not mud or excrement that passes through water",
and as much as one will contemplate this,
even an entire day —
one will not be able to understand it with intellect,
how physical water can purify a spiritual impurity
[and in this itself —
specifically the waters of a mikveh of forty se'ah or a drop of spring water,
but other waters in the entire world —
cannot purify].
Therefore, this is considered a chukah,
even when one can find reasons for details in the commandment.
And based on this, it follows,
that what the Rambam writes that "King Solomon understood most of the reasons of all the chukim of the Torah" —
this excludes not only the detail of the Red Heifer,
which is only one thing,
but also the matter of the multitude of details of the commandments.
That is, that also in chukim where he understood the general reason
(unlike in the Red Heifer,
where he did not understand the general principle,
"I said I will be wise, but it is far from me")
the matter of the multitude of details in them was distant from him,
which prevail over the understood general reason,
and therefore they are chukim.
In this, one also sees a revealed connection between a matter in Chassidus with Nigleh
[as discussed many times that every matter in Chassidus is also found in Nigleh]:
It is explained in the discourses of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe,
that one must fulfill all the commandments,
also mishpatim,
with acceptance of the yoke as one fulfills chukim
(which are above intellect).
And correspondingly, on the other side —
one must fulfill chukim with the delight as one fulfills mishpatim
(rational commandments).
And this corresponds with the above explanation in the Rambam,
that all commandments
(both chukim and mishpatim)
have in them both the matter of chukim
(which are above intellect),
regarding the details of the commandments
(in mishpatim),
and the matter of mishpatim
(reasons).
May it be His will that from this speech in all these matters, the request and cry and outcry of the Jews be fulfilled —
"Until when!"
And it will be "And I will restore your judges as at first,"
as we will soon read —
"Judges and officers you shall appoint for yourself in all your gates,"
in Tiberias,
and from there they will be transferred to the Chamber of Hewn Stone in the third Holy Temple,
Still in this Shabbat,
the Shabbat of blessing Elul,
and especially during the time of Ratzon deRatzin,
and all the more so at the conclusion of the holy Shabbat and Sunday —
the feast of King David the Messiah,
And may our eyes behold Your return to Zion with mercy,
and not only "and may our eyes behold" in the future tense,
but in the present tense and in the past tense,
And simply,
speedily in our days, literally.
Continuing from what was said above regarding the matter of "See,"
that there must be seeing in the service of G-d,
and especially —
in the fulfillment of the mission of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation,
by those who go in his ways and in his paths,
forever and ever
(in the language of the Igrot Kodesh) —
One should add to this, in a possible and nearly certain manner —
the connection with the matter of "The King in the Field" in the month of Elul
(which was not explicitly discussed earlier),
standing on the Shabbat of blessing Elul, which is the Shabbat of Parshat Re'eh:
"See" teaches and gives strength to a Jew,
that for him the "King in the Field" must stand in a manner of seeing —
he must see before his eyes
(the eyes of intellect,
until the eyes of flesh)
how the "King" stands near him and receives every Jew with a pleasant countenance and with a smiling face,
and the "King" waits —
"for the work of your hands He longs" —
that I should receive Him!
From this is understood the simple instruction of "See" on the Shabbat of blessing Elul,
and also understood —
the lesson from this regarding those who have convinced themselves that they have already fulfilled their obligation,
and have studied Torah, etc.,
and now nothing remains for them to do:
The simple instruction is —
that in the month of Elul, one demands of every Jew that he should see how the "King in the Field" stands near him!
From this it is understandable,
that even if he convinces himself that he has already fulfilled his obligation in the service of G-d,
he has studied Torah and given charity,
and has done a favor and exerted himself with other Jews, etc., etc. —
if he does not fool himself —
for it is no trick to fool a fool
(as is known the saying about this) —
he understands that even if he indeed did all these matters,
he has not, however, begun to do the service of the month of Elul:
that he should see the "King in the Field,"
how the Almighty stands near him!
He can indeed have all good things,
much Torah and commandments,
and the Almighty blesses him with children, life, and ample sustenance, and with all ample,
with peace of mind and peace of body,
and "you will see your world in your lifetime,"
he has Gan Eden here in this world, etc. —
Nevertheless, the service of the month of Elul is lacking:
actually seeing the "King in the Field"!
You can have all things —
but perhaps you will already think about the King!
And as was discussed previously,
that there are two levels:
One level —
that "there is no fear of G-d before his eyes,"
meaning that "G-d" Himself is "before his eyes,"
"I have set the L-rd before me always,"
but "there is no fear of G-d before his eyes,"
this does not affect him that he should have "fear of G-d,"
and it is like "a thief calls out to G-d at the entrance of the tunnel":
in practice he is a thief,
but together with this, "he calls out to G-d" that the Almighty should still help him in his theft.
A second level —
that "there is no G-d before his eyes":
he is so occupied with himself and with his desires
(indeed with permissible things,
but his desires) —
that he has no time to think about the Almighty. And in the place where a person's thought is, there he is —
since he does not think about the Almighty,
the Almighty is not found with him, G-d forbid!...
And it requires great deliberation which of the two is worse:
whether "there is no G-d before his eyes" is worse,
or "there is no fear of G-d before his eyes" is worse —
because then he is one who knows his Master and intends to rebel against Him,
and he still wants the Almighty to help him in his theft.
And may it be His will that one should not need to come to a dispute about this —
because it will be "God is before his eyes" and "the fear of God is before his eyes,"
and furthermore:
standing in the month of Elul, "before his eyes" —
the "King in the field,"
and as He stands as "my Beloved,"
with love and a pleasant countenance and a smiling face.
And He waits —
"You desire the work of Your hands" —
that the "I" should turn to Him,
and turn to Him as a "King,"
as his Master.
That is, it is entirely insufficient
that one should think that he has already done everything,
and since now he already has nothing to do —
he will fulfill his obligation and recite a chapter of Tehillim,
from where would it come,
it can certainly not harm,
if it does not help, it will not cause damage!...
Rather, he must turn to the "King in the field," knowing that He is his King and Master,
and in this consists his primary service
(in the month of Elul).
And if he does not do this —
it may indeed be that he has all the good things,
but the matter of seeing the "King in the field" is lacking.
In this, there is even further emphasis —
when he has those who are influenced by him,
who look to him,
and see that he does not conduct himself as one should conduct oneself —
they make the calculation and a fortiori:
Since so-and-so is indeed an important person,
he receives an aliyah to the third, sixth, and maftir,
(the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, smiled and said:)
maftir as well —
and nevertheless he does such and such —
can I not then do half of it,
a third of it,
a quarter of it, and so forth!
One understands from this —
the great responsibility that lies upon the one to whom others look.
On the other hand, there is the instruction of the month of Elul to every Jew:
Even if your mentor, etc., conducts himself in such and such a manner —
you must not learn from him,
because in the month of Elul, the "King in the field" stands next to you yourself,
and waits for you to turn to Him —
consequently,
what relevance do all these calculations that occur by others have,
when the "King in the field" stands next to you yourself?!
Another lesson in this:
Since the Almighty stands
(in the month of Elul)
next to every Jew and receives him with a pleasant countenance and shows him a smiling face —
it is understood that there is no place for the Jew to be in melancholy, etc.,
to the point that he distorts himself and distorts others,
distorts the members of his household,
distorts his lawyers, etc.,
and wishes to bring them all to a state of melancholy.
Rather —
as per the instruction of our Nesi'im —
think good,
it will be good!
And especially since the Almighty stands next to you and shows you a pleasant countenance and a smiling face —
consequently, why should you be in melancholy?!
When the Almighty stands next to you with a pleasant countenance and a smiling face —
it is understood that He cannot tolerate when you stand with an angry face!...
If you have matters that confuse you —
you are told:
think good,
it will be good.
What the meaning of this is, is not that one thinks good to fulfill his obligation,
and one writes a note that he has already fulfilled the obligation of thinking good,
but now he stands in melancholy... —
this is not called thinking good;
דאס הייסט ניט טראכטן גוט;
thinking good means —
that he means it truthfully and in a practical manner,
then it will certainly be good.
And especially,
as mentioned,
that the Almighty stands next to him with a pleasant countenance and a smiling face —
this must certainly evoke joy in him.
And all the more so, a fortiori:
Even when he speaks with his lawyer —
a flesh and blood being —
he will certainly not immediately tell him all his reasons for melancholy,
rather, he will listen to him,
and afterwards —
he will offer him his advice,
and if the lawyer wishes,
he will accept it,
and if he holds that it is not appropriate advice —
he will do as he sees fit.
How much more so when one stands before the King in the field, who shows him a pleasant countenance and a smiling face —
there is certainly no place for him to be in melancholy, etc.!
And in a practical manner —
one should bring down the instruction of "see" into actual deed —
that each one should see how the "King in the field" stands next to him,
And this should bring his actual service,
beginning from the special service connected with the month of Elul —
in the three pillars of Torah, service, and acts of kindness, and the service of repentance,
as hinted in the acronym of the word "Elul"
(as discussed many times,
and already printed),
until that this will further hasten the true and complete redemption
(which is also hinted in the acronym of Elul) —
and He will build the Holy Temple speedily in our days,
and not delay even for the blink of an eye,
speedily in our days literally,
and in this itself —
in a manner of the blink of an eye,
and out of joy and goodness of heart.
His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, may he live for many good years, commanded to sing "He will build the Holy Temple, etc."
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to recite a final blessing,
will certainly recite a final blessing.
