English translation 1
It was mentioned in the farbrengen of the previous year,
It was mentioned in the farbrengen of the previous year,
that the determination of these days is
(almost)
the same determination as last year.
For then too, Shabbat Parshat Shemot was Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Shevat,
including and especially —
the tenth of Shabbat
("the tenth shall be holy"),
the day of the hillula of the Rebbe, my father-in-law,
and the 23rd of Tevet,
the eve of the hillula of the Alter Rebbe,
and in the language of the Tzemach Tzedek:
"In Moshk, on Parshat Shemot, the 23rd, towards the 24th of Tevet, at midnight, at the eleventh hour, the holy ark, the light of Israel, the anointed of the Lord, was captured";
"במוש"ק דשמות כ"ג אור לכ"ד טבת בחצות שעה י"א נשבה ארון הקדש מאור ישראל משיח ה'";
And then
(on Shabbat Parshat Shemot last year)
there was also a farbrengen. And several proposals were discussed,
and we reviewed from the words of our Rabbis and leaders,
and from the Written Torah and the Oral Torah in general,
Consequently, there is now no need to repeat what was then discussed,
because surely it is remembered,
and especially since it has already been printed with references,
and the well-known saying of the Tzemach Tzedek is that print is for its generation and for generations
(plural),
and everyone can look into it themselves.
Rather than repeating the main points,
because although last year had the same determination and it was already discussed then,
nevertheless it must be that "each day they should be new in your eyes",
and especially according to what the Alter Rebbe writes that each year "a new, higher light descends, such a lofty light that has never shone since the days of the world",
And regarding the other matters that were then discussed —
one reminds that they should remember or look into the printed material. And more than that need not be reminded,
because whichever way you look at it:
Those who hold by it —
will look into it,
and those who do not —
it will not help to speak about it again,
for here the matter of "we compel him until he says 'I want'" does not apply...
And in addition to this:
In addition to that which this year must be "new" also in the matters of last year
(and especially since this year too a "new light etc." has descended) —
there are also innovations in the simple meaning of this Shabbat
(Parshat Shemot)
this year compared to last year
(and previous years).
Beginning with the Torah study portions of this day:
Regarding the study portions of Chitas
(Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya)
for this day,
they are the same this year and last year
(and regarding the Tanya study portion, the only difference is whether it is a simple year or a leap year);
(און בנוגע להשיעור תניא איז דער איינציקער חילוק איז צי ס'איז א שנה פשוטה אדער א שנה מעוברת);
but regarding other Torah study portions, a change is found from year to year.
For example, regarding the study portion of Rambam,
as is the custom of Israel in many places in recent times —
and it is already three years that Jews conduct themselves this way,
whereby the custom then attains the force of three times constituting a chazakah:
One sees simply that the Rambam study portion each year is different from the year
(and years)
previous.
Similarly, regarding the Rambam study portion of this Shabbat Parshat Shemot,
it is different —
an innovation compared to the Rambam study portion of Shabbat Parshat Shemot of last year.
And according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that everything is by Divine Providence,
all the more so a matter connected to Torah
(and a Torah study portion that has become a custom of Israel for three years),
it is understood that what is learned of the Rambam study portion on this day
is by Divine Providence,
and surely has a connection to the day.
And likewise regarding the custom in recent years to dwell on a matter in Rashi on the weekly portion —
there is an innovation in this from year to year:
Actually, there are seemingly two options in this:
One option is to speak about the same matter in Rashi that was spoken about last year,
and in a manner of "turn it over" and innovate in it etc.,
in accordance with that which "each day they should be new in your eyes",
whereby then there will be an innovation at least in pleasure;
וואס דעמולט וועט צוקומען א חידוש עכ"פ אין תענוג;
However, there is an incomparably easier and simpler and more straightforward way —
by speaking about a truly new matter in Rashi that was not spoken about last year:
That is, not only "turn it over" in the Rashi that was spoken about last year,
but "turn it over and turn it over" and speak about a new matter in Rashi.
And especially since from last year to this year, the innovation was added,
that it was requested that one should themselves propose matters in Rashi,
and with emphasis —
in order to ensure that one does not speak about a matter that has already been spoken about before.
According to the understanding,
then there is not the farbrengen on Shabbat Parshat Shemot
(in this year),
it comes to a novelty in the simple explanation
(regarding the farbrengen of last year in this fixed arrangement) —
due to the matter in the daily study of Rambam and the matter in Rashi in our portion that we will speak about,
as will be discussed below.
Regarding the day itself —
Shabbat Parshat Shemot,
Rosh Chodesh Shevat,
the twenty-third of Tevet —
since we find ourselves in the four cubits of His Holiness, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe,
we must first of all begin by speaking about His Holiness, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe,
whose day of passing is blessed from this Shabbat,
and about the old Rebbe,
whose day of passing is today, the eve,
and that His Holiness, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe, is his successor,
according to the simple explanation of "successor,"
that he is his successor entirely,
and furthermore —
each "luminary" adds relative to the "luminary" before him,
novelties come to him,
in his Torah and his manner of service and his conduct, etc.
Regarding the ones of the yahrtzeits
(of the twenty-fourth of Tevet and the tenth of Shevat)
there are many matters. One must choose a primary matter. But in this there are also many primary matters,
and one cannot speak about everything at once,
rather one must choose one primary matter —
"Let us choose for ourselves a book and let us see,"
in the Torah of the one of the yahrtzeit,
and before this —
a Torah teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that was explained and elucidated by the old Rebbe —
regarding the greatness of the matter of the name,
that it brings into being and gives life to and sustains the thing that is called by this name.
And furthermore, this also has a connection with our portion —
Parshat Shemot,
the matter of names.
From this it is understood,
that the primary matter with which we must begin to speak about the ones of the yahrtzeits —
is in connection with their names
[in which there are no differences of opinion or questions,
because everyone knows their names],
that bring into being and give life to and sustain,
and indicate their essence:
"Shneur Zalman"
(the name of the one of the yahrtzeit of the twenty-fourth of Tevet),
and "Yosef Yitzchak"
(the name of the one of the yahrtzeit of the tenth of Shevat).
[The continuation of the talk —
the explanation of the lesson from "Shneur Zalman," etc.,
together with the instructions in connection with the twenty-fourth of Tevet —
was reviewed by His Holiness, the Rebbe, may he live for many good days, Amen,
and was printed in a separate booklet.
And below come the matters that were not included there.]
[In continuation of the matter that the Alter Rebbe —
"Shneur" —
illuminated the world with the revealed Torah and the hidden Torah,
and as they are combined into one matter (as is hinted in the one name "Shneur") — he said:]
It is known that the revealed Torah and the hidden Torah are analogous to a soul and a body —
the soul of the Torah and the body of the Torah,
that the soul and body are two separate things,
but they become unified,
until they are truly one. So that one cannot learn only one part
(either only the revealed part of the Torah or only the inner dimension of the Torah),
rather one must learn both things,
and how they become together one thing —
as the one of the yahrtzeit says:
the perfection of the body of the Torah is specifically when one learns its inner dimension in the soul of the Torah,
and the perfection of the soul of the Torah is specifically when one has in addition also the study of the revealed Torah —
"his Talmud is in his hand."
And to such an extent,
that the one of the yahrtzeit rules,
"Any matter about which the Kabbalists, etc., disagree with the Gemara or the codifiers, etc.,
follow the Gemara or the codifiers, etc." And as the Tzemach Tzedek writes
(regarding a matter in the laws of mikvaot):
"And the things that I wrote are the words of my master, my father, the Rebbe, the Gaon, of blessed memory, according to the well of living water. And even though we do not derive from the teacher, nevertheless the words are correct and acceptable."
And even though the discussion about this is known
(in the Shaar HaKlal and in the books of Rabbi Naeh),
it was weighed,
that in a dispute between the codifiers and the Kabbalists,
one decides according to the Kabbalists,
and he explained that this is not a contradiction to what he writes in the aforementioned Shulchan Aruch,
because the codifiers write that one follows the opinion of the codifiers against the Kabbalists,
and in his Shulchan Aruch
(that he wrote for those involved in the revealed Torah)
the Alter Rebbe followed the codifiers,
in contrast, the Kabbalists write that one follows the opinion of the Kabbalists against the codifiers,
and in the Siddur
(that was made primarily for those who are connected to the service of prayer,
at least simply)
the old Rebbe followed the Kabbalists
(and accordingly there is no reason to wonder about the contradictions between the Shulchan Aruch and the Siddur of the Alter Rebbe) —
This is not a contradiction to what was said above
(that the inner dimension of the Torah must reach the revealed dimension of the Torah to such an extent,
that one rules a halachah according to the revealed dimension of the Torah against the Kabbalah (as per the ruling of the Alter Rebbe in his Shulchan Aruch)) —
because also in the places where one rules like the Kabbalists,
there is a source for this
(or at least a hint)
in the revealed dimension of the Torah,
that in this place the conduct must be according to the opinion of the Kabbalists.
[Regarding the matter,
that the instruction of the 24th of Tevet is for all of Israel,
also for young boys and young girls,
that even to them one can explain matters of the Torah of the Alter Rebbe,
in letters that are appropriate for them,
and especially from his Siddur,
which is equal for every soul]:
Because although the entire Torah is an inheritance for all Jews
(even a one-day-old infant) —
nevertheless, according to the Torah there is an order of study with which one studies with a Jew:
first, at five years of age for Scripture,
then at ten years of age for Mishnah,
at fifteen years of age for Gemara. And when a child is five years old or younger,
one can only teach him "Scripture",
but not teach matters of the inner dimension of the Torah with understanding and comprehension
(unless one clothes it in his letters, etc.).
And although it is stated in Likkutei Torah,
that "in the category of Scripture is also included the study of the inner dimension of the Torah" —
nevertheless, when one studies the inner dimension of the Torah with understanding and comprehension,
in a manner of "they shall be nourished" from it,
this is in the category of Talmud
(Gemara).
And the practical difference for halachah —
regarding the fulfillment of the law that "a person should always divide his years into three: one third in Scripture, one third in Mishnah, one third in Gemara".
Based on this, it is understood that when one wants a child
(five years old for Scripture, etc.)
to derive an instruction from studying the books of the Baal HaHillula,
he must study it primarily from the Siddur of the Baal HaHillula. Beginning from the beginning of the Siddur,
"it is good to accustom oneself to say immediately upon awakening, etc., 'Modeh Ani, etc.'",
even before Netilat Yadayim,
"while one's hands are not yet clean".
And since it is written this way in the Siddur —
the child understands,
that this is what the Almighty tells him
(as a child understands,
that something written in the Siddur is from the Almighty) —
that the Almighty cares about what happens with his "I",
that his "I" should be "grateful...
before You",
"a living and enduring King".
And the child does it upon awakening from his sleep,
when he is still lying in bed by himself in his room,
and he does not have before him his teacher,
or his father to tell him what to do,
and even before Netilat Yadayim.
On the contrary:
A child says "Modeh Ani, etc." simply with his entire storm,
unlike by an adult, where there is a whole discussion,
how can he think about the meaning of the words at that time,
because he has not yet washed his nails with water,
and the discussion is known whether one may meditate on matters of prayer before the blessing on the Torah,
consequently he decides that he must say it in a manner of "a commandment of men learned by rote",
not thinking about the meaning of the words at that time!
What does "a commandment of men learned by rote" mean —
by a Jew it is not possible to fulfill a commandment in a manner of "a commandment of men learned by rote", Heaven forbid,
because it speaks about a commandment of the Holy One, blessed be He,
through which a bond and connection is formed between him and the Almighty —
so what does it mean that he will do it like "a commandment of men learned by rote"?!
Every matter by a Jew must come with effort,
and in the language of our Nesiim:
There is no "automatically". By a Jew it is not possible that he does one thing and through this another thing comes automatically,
rather every matter must come with effort.
However, in the effort itself there can be two manners:
either the effort is with understanding and comprehension and contemplation,
or because he holds that before the blessing on the Torah he must do the effort without contemplation and understanding and comprehension in the recitation of "Modeh Ani, etc.".
[Continuing from this that the Tzemach Tzedek writes regarding the time of the passing of the Alter Rebbe,
"on Motzaei Shabbat of Shemot, the 23rd, towards the 24th, etc." (as above in section 1) —
and it is noteworthy,
regarding the special connection of the Tzemach Tzedek to the Alter Rebbe —
according to the saying of our Sages, of blessed memory, "If a man emits seed first, the woman gives birth to a female;
if a woman emits seed first, she gives birth to a male",
the daughter of the Alter Rebbe who gave birth to the Tzemach Tzedek,
and even that through this saying they influenced the Tzemach Tzedek to accept the Nesius ]:
And one must say the reason why the chassidim needed to arouse the Tzemach Tzedek regarding this
(It is obvious that the Tzemach Tzedek himself knew about this hint,
being a great expert etc.,
and certainly a matter that is brought in Rashi on the Torah) —
because chassidim need to demonstrate that they are making a vessel for it,
and show that there are "ears that hear," consequently one sees that there is someone to speak to.
And regarding this concerning a farbrengen:
When one sees that there are "ears that hear,"
then there is something to make a farbrengen and speak etc.
But unfortunately there can be "ears that do not hear,"
he sleeps or he thinks why does he need to trouble himself here,
when he could have been in another place and have enjoyment there?!
The only reason why he comes to the farbrengen,
is because it is not fitting for his grandson. And the sanctification of G-d's name for the grandson overrides all matters...
Consequently he shows "see that I have come,"
he has come to the farbrengen,
but what does he do in practice —
he sleeps,
or he thinks about other things,
and in the place where a person's thought is, there he is —
consequently he has brought about,
that he indeed did not come to the farbrengen
(because he is located through his thought in a different place!)
And this is not the place to speak about a matter of which I do not know who derives pleasure from it.
And especially since one has already spoken about this for many years. One speaks again, perhaps the situation will finally become better,
and the Most High,
Who is the essence of good and whose nature is to do good,
should reveal the true good that is in it.
What is better —
I do not know:
whether he should stop coming to the gatherings and disturb with his sleeping,
or better is —
he should come and begin to hear what is being said,
even though he thinks that he has already heard everything,
and on the contrary —
he knows better. And on every matter that is said he has twenty-four
(not twelve,
but twenty-four)
questions...
[Conclusion of the talk]:
And may it be His will that from Parshat Shemot one should go directly to Parshat Vaera
[which comes immediately adjacent to Parshat Shemot,
as emphasized in that one begins reading Parshat Vaera immediately in the Minchah prayer,
at the time of the ratzon ratzon,
of Shabbat Parshat Shemot] —
the revelation of "I am the Lord,"
in a manner of seeing
("and I appeared"),
with the coming of Mashiach our righteousness,
and he will teach the entire world in a manner of seeing,
And throughout the entire world there will be seeing of G-dliness —
"and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see etc.,"
And as explained in Chassidus the greatness of the superiority of seeing even over hearing,
hearing is not comparable to seeing,
and truly one does not need to come to Chassidus,
because even Rashi brings it down in his commentary on the Torah,
below ten handbreadths,
and "with our young and with our old etc., with our sons and with our daughters,"
and out of joy and goodness of heart.
[In this talk was discussed regarding the novelty in the fixing of the 24th of Tevet in this year,
in the year of Shemittah (the elevation of Malchut),
whose beginning is on the day of Shabbat (the elevation of all the ten Sefirot).
And the lesson from this is,
that there must be service with the revealed powers (all ten powers of the soul ("with all your heart and with all your soul") that have descended from the ten Sefirot),
and contemplation and joy,
feeling of the heart etc.,
but together with this,
in all matters of service it is evident openly and with emphasis that their performance is due to the command of the King,
the matter of self-nullification and acceptance of the yoke (Malchut). —
All this is included in the aforementioned kuntres that was proofread by the Rebbe shlita.
And in continuation of the matter, it was also discussed regarding the education of young children]:
Also with children, the matter of contemplation and feeling of the heart is applicable
(service with the ten powers of the soul).
The education must be in a manner,
that in every matter with which one educates him,
and in every matter that the child learns and contemplates and feels etc.,
the matter should be heard that he is thereby obeying the Most High.
And simply:
When one tells a child a story about the Patriarchs,
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
or about a tzaddik,
a Tanna or Amora,
about the Rebbes,
even about his grandfather
(with a long white beard)
and grandmother —
he gathers himself together and is able to contemplate about this,
and in addition to this he must think how this is relevant to him in his life in his obeying the Most High.
And all the more so with a kal vachomer:
How much more so that he can differentiate regarding a nut or a toy —
which thing pleases him and he wants to have,
and which thing does not please him and he does not want to have —
all the more so that this must be regarding a story that he hears about his grandfather,
that he should think how this is relevant to his life.
And on the contrary:
Specifically with a child it comes much more easily than with an adult. Because with a child it is simple that every thing that he hears or does is relevant to actual deed in his actual conduct, how he should obey the Almighty.
And if with someone the question arises —
from where does one know that such is the reality,
one also has the best advice:
Try it out —
you will see!
Until that one will see how the children will add to their parents —
"And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children —
through the children".
From this there is a general lesson regarding the education of boys and girls
[the Rebbe shlita smiled,
and said:
And regarding those advanced in years —
it is a pity that one would even need to reach as much as one truly needs. As everyone sees in himself,
that sometimes he is in a state of a "minor" or a "minor" ...]:
For whatever reason it may be, the actual reality is,
that most parents pay more attention to educating their children in matters of actual deed,
reciting "Modeh Ani",
reciting blessings,
washing the hands,
fulfilling the commandments and the like.
But only a part of parents also emphasize education also in matters of opinions,
matters of ethics,
fear of G-d and love of G-d,
and in general —
knowledge about the Almighty and that one must obey the Almighty etc.
And as the Rambam complained in his time —
although he writes it in the language and style of halachah,
this is, however, in the language of a claim:
"Do not say that repentance applies only to transgressions that involve action...
Rather, just as one must repent from these, so too must one search in opinions...
And these sins are more severe than those that involve action etc."
One has the aforementioned instruction —
that one must educate children also in this matter, that they should know that there is a Master of this palace,
and that He is not located somewhere in the seventh heaven and looks in through a small window to see what is happening with the child in his room,
but rather He is located together with the child in his room,
and on the contrary —
first the Almighty is located there,
and only afterwards did it become a room also of the child,
And consequently the child must make from his room a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He,
regarding which the Almighty says "And I will dwell in their midst".
— A small child does not know about this detail of "
(a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He)
in the lower realms",
he does not know the difference between "upper realms" and "lower realms" —
he knows, however, that this is his room. He must make there a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He, in a revealed manner.
And how does he accomplish this —
first and foremost by making it a room and vessel upon the three pillars upon which the world stands,
both the great world,
and also the "small world, that is man"
— That this
("small world", that is man)
includes —
contrary to the opinion of those who err —
not only one who is already bar-mitzvah and an adult in years,
but also a small child. As is understood from our Sages, of blessed memory, in Avot d'Rabbi Natan that the Holy One, blessed be He, "created in man everything that He created in His world",
and he enumerates there all the parts of the great world as they are reflected in the human body
(small world) —
the head of the world is reflected in the head of man,
and so on regarding the rest of the 248 limbs
(and correspondingly the number of limbs in a female);
(ועד"ז דער מספר אברים ביי א נקבה) 58;
and one sees simply,
that from birth every child has all the limbs and all the parts of the body,
including also hairs and nails —
in which consists the "small world, that is man",
in the pattern of all these parts in the great world —
A child must also cause that his "small world" should be "standing" —
through that his life and his private room and private house become a house and vessel upon the three pillars upon which the world
(his small one)
stands,
Torah, prayer, and acts of kindness.
And afterwards one demands of him also,
that he should influence his friends,
and girls —
their friends,
by them showing how his room and house is a house of Torah, prayer, and charity,
and speaking with them that they should do so as well
(as discussed above).
And at the time when one accepts the resolution in public and in the community —
it has in it more force,
as explained in Kuntres Hitaltzu.
And not only more force regarding the individual
(who joins himself to the community),
but this gives more force to the entire community —
as the law is
(as discussed numerous times)
regarding "In a multitude of people is the glory of the King,"
that when there is already a minyan of ten from Israel,
and even a hundred and a thousand,
until even a myriad —
ten thousand Jews —
even one individual must join himself to the community,
not only for the sake of his completeness,
but because through this there is added to the "In a multitude of people is the glory of the King" of the entire collective of a myriad,
all ten thousand Jews!
And in all this there is an additional power from the day of the hillula of the old Rebbe,
when "all his deeds and his Torah and his service which he served all the days of his life,"
"is revealed and shines in a manner of revelation from above to below...
and works salvations in the midst of the land."
That is, even if one finds oneself "in the midst of the land" —
one has nothing to despair about,
because on the contrary:
there "He works salvations."
And according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov
(which his holiness, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe, ordered to be printed),
that every Jew is a "desirable land,"
which possesses precious stones and pearls.
That is, even when he stands in the aspect of "land,"
and moreover —
"in the midst of the land" —
a Jew is a "desirable land."
And if one does not see it openly in another Jew —
it proves that he lacks in his contemplation, etc.,
and in the well-known expression:
For it is not an empty thing from you,
and if it is empty,
it is from you.
And through that which he will exert himself, he will reveal how that one is a "desirable land."
And in the language of our portion —
that not looking at that which "And these are the names of the children of Israel coming to Egypt" —
in the time of exile,
and also outside the land —
"for the sake of the redemption of Israel they are mentioned here,"
until as it states in the haftarah:
"Those who come, Jacob shall take root, Israel shall blossom and sprout, and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit" —
being a "desirable land."
And may it be His will that thus it should be fulfilled in actuality,
"Israel shall blossom and sprout,"
until that Jews take over the entire world —
"and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit,"
And they all go to the land of Israel,
as it states in the continuation of the haftarah "And it shall be on that day, etc., and you shall be gathered one by one, children of Israel,
And it shall be on that day, a great shofar shall be blown, and those lost in the land of Assyria and those cast away in the land of Egypt shall come and bow down to the L-rd on the holy mountain in Jerusalem,"
in the third Holy Temple,
and in the future Jerusalem will spread over all the land of Israel,
and the land of Israel will spread over all the lands,
and their silver and their gold with them,
with all the matters that one acquired during the time of exile in the land and outside the land,
until in a manner of "the L-rd your G-d shall expand your border,"
out of expansion,
And speedily in our days, literally.
Discourse (like a talk)
beginning with the words "Those who come, Jacob shall take root, etc."
At a gathering on the day of Shabbat it is also customary
(as mentioned earlier)
to speak about a topic in Rashi on the weekly portion,
a topic in the notes of the father on the Zohar,
and a topic in the current lesson of Rambam.
And as discussed above,
that one has the choice to speak about a topic that was already spoken about in previous years,
but in order to emphasize the novel point in the matter,
it is easier to speak about a new topic that until now has not been spoken about
(at least as recorded in memory).
Regarding Rashi —
the Rashi in our portion was proposed
(chapter 4, verse 20)
on the verse "And Moses took his wife and his sons and mounted them on the donkey." Rashi focuses on the words "on the donkey" and explains:
"The designated donkey,
it is the donkey that Abraham saddled for the binding of Isaac,
and it is the one upon which the King Messiah is destined to be revealed, as it is said 'poor and riding on a donkey.'"
And several questions were also asked about this,
as printed in the journals,
but most surprisingly, the
(at least in the journals that I have seen)
"classic question" was not asked.
Since not all who are here have seen the journals,
and we are speaking here in a manner that all should be able to understand —
therefore we will review the questions that were asked in the journals,
and with the addition of the "classic question," etc.
A) To begin with —
Regarding this discourse beginning from Rashi:
Since Rashi explains only the word "the donkey"
(with a definite article hei),
which indicates "the designated donkey" —
why does Rashi also quote the word "upon"? Even if one were to say that Rashi wishes to bring the entire matter —
he should have quoted "and he mounted them upon the donkey." However, since he does not quote the entire matter,
only the words "upon the donkey," this is proof that also the word "upon"
(the donkey)
is relevant to the understanding of the matter.
B) In order to demonstrate that this is "the designated donkey," Rashi brings the continuation "it is the donkey that Abraham saddled." But why does Rashi write "
(that Abraham saddled)
for the binding of Isaac" —
what is the practical difference?
And especially since the Torah relates only one time about a donkey that Abraham saddled —
at the binding of Isaac,
why does Rashi need to emphasize,
is it not understood by itself? And from this itself it is proven,
that this detail that it was "for the binding of Isaac" is relevant to the understanding of the matter here in this place.
C) Why does Rashi then add "and it is upon which the King Messiah is destined to be revealed, as it is said 'poor and riding upon a donkey'" —
why is it not sufficient that "it is the donkey that Abraham saddled"?
D) What is the precise language "the King Messiah,"
and not "Messiah" —
as Rashi writes earlier the language "
(in the days of)
the Messiah"?
E) In the verse here, the matter of riding upon the donkey is relevant
("and he mounted them upon the donkey") —
why does Rashi here introduce a new matter
(and from where does Rashi take it) —
"and it is upon which the King Messiah is destined to be revealed,"
he should have written "and it is upon which the King Messiah is destined to ride"! Furthermore:
the proof that Rashi brings is from the verse "poor and riding upon a donkey" —
specifically "riding,"
there it says nothing about "to be revealed upon it"!
F) A "powerful question"
(that was not asked):
According to the content of Rashi that "the donkey"
(with a definite article hei)
means "the designated donkey, etc." —
then also regarding the donkey of the Messiah it should have stood in the verse "poor and riding upon the donkey"
(with a definite article hei),
and all the more so and a fortiori:
Since here in the verse it says "the donkey,"
(also)
on account of the future,
the donkey of the Messiah
(in addition to on account of the past,
the donkey of Abraham) —
then certainly regarding the donkey of the Messiah it should have stood "the donkey,"
on account of the reality that already existed in the past,
both by Abraham and by Moses?!
G) The strongest "powerful question":
A five-year-old knows
(and if he does not know,
he asks about it)
that a donkey, according to nature, lives several decades.
When Rashi tells him that "and he mounted them upon the donkey" means "the designated donkey,
it is the donkey that Abraham saddled for the binding of Isaac,
and it is upon which the King Messiah is destined to be revealed, as it is said 'poor and riding upon a donkey'" —
he raises an outcry:
From the time of Abraham until the time of Moses, 400 years pass
(approximately),
and from the time of Moses until the time of the Messiah, more than a thousand years had already passed until the time of Rashi
(when Rashi wrote this commentary),
and the Messiah had still not come,
all the more so for a five-year-old studying Scripture in our generation,
when several thousand years have already passed.
It thus turns out,
that the donkey is several thousand years old!
When one tells this to a five-year-old studying Scripture —
he will not let it pass simply —
because it is a very strange miracle,
that a donkey should live several thousand years —
completely incomparable to the life of a donkey according to nature!
Furthermore:
The five-year-old knows that there were righteous ones and great ones of the world,
and they did not live so many years —
and here when it is about a donkey
(to distinguish) —
one makes a miracle that it should live long and live...
several thousand years!!
And especially since the five-year-old knows the greatness of a miracle —
as he learns in the very portion,
that the Almighty says that Moses our teacher,
he should show Pharaoh king of Egypt a miracle,
and because of this Pharaoh should release the Jews from Egypt:
The gentile Pharaoh had six hundred thousand slaves,
who built for him Pithom and Raamses,
and he did not have to pay them anything for it. The Almighty says to Moses our teacher:
Tell Pharaoh to free the Jews —
and why,
because you show him a miracle. And what kind of miracle,
that from a staff becomes a serpent... —
will Pharaoh therefore immediately release his six hundred thousand slaves,
and even in the manner of "and you shall despoil Egypt"?! —
To such an extent is the power of a miracle
(even a miracle of turning a staff into a serpent).
Afterwards Rashi teaches with a five-year-old [student] studying Scripture according to the simple meaning —
he should know that there is a donkey that lives several thousand years!!
And Rashi does not warn at all that there is a wonder in this,
rather he says it as if everything is simple!
As if to say: Oh! —
Do you think that making a staff into a serpent is a miracle —
Here you have a donkey that lives thousands of years!
And as will be explained below.
Here is the place to continue the explanation in this Rashi from last Shabbat:
Rashi focuses on what Joseph said to Jacob
(in response to his question "Who are these?")
"They are my sons whom God has given me here,"
and he explains:
"Here —
he showed him the document of betrothal and the document of marriage contract."
People raised a question about this,
that it was explained,
that "here" compels that Joseph showed Jacob something,
pointing with a finger and saying "this,"
and a thing that is proof of the fitness of his children,
in order that Jacob should bless them. Therefore Rashi explains "he showed him the document of betrothal and the document of marriage contract" —
because this is proof for Jacob that the children were born with utmost fitness.
With this they asked:
Why did he not show him a "document of marriage"?
A whole discussion began,
and they wrote wild things,
and things contrary to the law,
and they already held it at printing. They caught it at the last minute.
With this, however, they did not catch a "blatant difficulty" in this matter
(which according to the explanation in this will also understand the matter of "document of marriage",
as below):
The Rambam writes that before the giving of the Torah the entire reality of betrothal and marriage from the outset did not exist —
"Before the giving of the Torah a person would meet a woman in the market,
if he and she desired to marry her he would bring her into his house and cohabit with her in private and she would be his wife"
(only after the giving of the Torah —
"since the Torah was given, Israel was commanded that if a man desires to marry a woman he must acquire her first before witnesses and afterwards she will be his wife, as it is said 'When a man takes a wife and comes to her...'
with money, a document, or sexual intercourse.")
And also regarding divorce there was no document,
a bill of divorce,
rather "and he sends her from his house."
According to this the question on Rashi "he showed him
(Joseph)
the document of betrothal and the document of marriage contract" becomes —
that before the giving of the Torah there was no place from the outset for this entire matter of betrothal and marriage contract. And it is obvious that Rashi in his simple meaning will not explain a thing that did not exist in reality. And there is no place to say that Rashi argues with the Rambam about a reality.
The difficulty becomes even stronger:
It is stated in the Rambam,
that "all of Israel have already customarily betrothed with money or with an item worth money"
(and not with a document).
Now when Rashi explains that "he showed him the document of betrothal" the five-year-old asks:
What is a "document of betrothal"? Rashi cannot show it to him,
because such a reality did not exist then!
And even though the Patriarchs fulfilled the entire Torah before it was given,
as the five-year-old learned by Abraham "and he kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws",
"decrees for distancing etc. such as secondary forbidden relations...
the Oral Law, a law given to Moses at Sinai",
and so came Isaac,
and so came Jacob,
and so it is understood regarding Joseph —
However regarding the laws of betrothal one sees that by the Patriarchs the laws of betrothal were not as after the giving of the Torah, as the five-year-old remembers that Jacob married sisters, and
(he will learn that)
Amram married his aunt, and more
[as discussed at length previously regarding this].
And a striking example of this:
Laban brought his daughter Leah to Jacob in the evening and with deceit "and he came to her",
and nothing was added in this
(and Jacob's complaint was only "why have you deceived me?"),
and the marriage stands until today.
One sees from this,
that also according to the simple explanation, by the Patriarchs there were not the laws of betrothal
(betrothal and marriage)
as after the giving of the Torah. And through that which "he came to him and he came to me,"
without any other matters,
she became his wife.
As the Rambam writes as above,
that before the giving of the Torah there was not the reality of the law of betrothal and after the giving of the Torah.
From this itself it is proven that that which Rashi writes here by Joseph that "he showed him a document of betrothal and a document of marriage contract" does not mean "a document of betrothal and a document of marriage contract" as it was innovated after the giving of the Torah.
And the explanation of this:
Before the giving of the Torah, indeed by Joseph there was not
(and the Patriarchs,
although they fulfilled the entire Torah)
the reality of betrothal and marriage contract according to Torah law. Because the entire matter was innovated at the giving of the Torah.
And the matter of marriage before the giving of the Torah
(also by the Patriarchs)
was through that which they lived together
("if he and she desire, he brings her into his house etc. and she becomes his wife"),
as it was by Jacob and Leah
(as above).
And the explanation of "document of betrothal" is —
not a document that effects the matter of betrothal
(as it was after the giving of the Torah,
where he writes "behold you are betrothed to me"),
but a document that is merely a proof and clarification
(like a document of a will,
or a document of sale,
which does not effect a reality,
but is only clarifying the reality)
that there was a preparation and introduction before the marriage,
that is, not in the manner of "one who encounters a woman in the market etc.,"
but after the introduction that he informs her beforehand,
and they set a time and make a preparation etc.
[And there is no question from where does the five-year-old know that there is a reality of a preparation before marriage —
because he knows that in a wedding there are two stages (even if he does not know that they are called "betrothal" and "marriage" —
as he learns further: "And who is the man who betrothed a woman and did not take her." And even if one will say that he has not yet learned this,
he has, however, previously learned that Abraham sent Eliezer his servant "and take a wife for my son Isaac,"
and Eliezer gave her "a golden nose ring etc.,"
but through this she did not yet become the wife of Isaac,
but afterwards there was another stage,
that "Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebecca and she became his wife"].
And regarding "document of marriage contract" it means —
a document where it is written that he obligated himself to give her money,
like it is written by Shechem son of Hamor "increase upon me very much the dowry,"
"marriage contract,"
but not a document of marriage contract as one writes today according to Torah law.
And based on this it is understood,
that Joseph's intention in showing Jacob "a document of betrothal and a document of marriage contract" —
was to show him that he did not simply take Asenath daughter of Potiphera in the manner of "one who encounters a woman in the market etc.,"
but there was with it a preparation and consequently an additional caution etc.
And the proof of this is —
"with this" —
"he showed him a document of betrothal and a document of marriage contract,"
not a document that is in the Mishnah,
which effects the betrothal,
but merely a clarifying document that tells what happened.
And based on this it is understood how Rashi agrees with the reality as the Rambam writes that before the giving of the Torah there was not "betrothal" according to Torah law,
and I thereby [address] that which in the time of Rashi there was altogether no reality of "document of betrothal" —
because "document of betrothal" here does not mean the "document of betrothal" from after the giving of the Torah,
but merely a clarifying document etc.,
as above.
Based on this, however, the question arises:
Why did he not show him a "document of marriage"? And one cannot answer that according to Torah law there is no reality of a document of marriage —
because,
as discussed above,
we are not speaking here about Torah law,
but about a clarifying document that merely reveals the events —
therefore, would it not have been more fitting to show a "document of marriage" that tells about the actual matter that she is his wife,
rather than showing a "document of betrothal" that tells only about the preparations for this etc.?
So the explanation of this is —
that this itself is the proof:
Since before the giving of the Torah the reality of betrothal and marriage according to the law of the Torah did not exist,
and a woman became the wife of a certain person through their living together
("before the giving of the Torah, a person would meet a woman in the marketplace,
if he and she desired, he would take her into his house etc. and she would be his wife") —
Joseph did not need to bring a proof from a document that there was a marriage
(that she is his wife),
because Jacob himself could see that they were living together
(see, and especially according to what is said in the Midrash that Asenath was the daughter of Dinah and Shechem),
that according to the simple explanation, Asenath was then still living
[and even if one would say that she was no longer living then,
there were many witnesses who remembered and could tell Jacob that they had lived together],
consequently Jacob himself understands from this
(before he asked "who are these")
that it was a marriage,
and for this Joseph does not need to bring a proof to Jacob from a document;
און אויף דעם דארף יוסף ניט ברענגען א ראי' צו יעקב'ן פון א שטר;
Joseph needed to bring a proof,
that for this there was an additional preparation and consequently an additional precaution
(and not merely in the manner of "a person would meet a woman in the marketplace etc."),
therefore he said to him "they are my sons whom God has given me in this place",
"he showed him the document of betrothal",
and also "the document of marriage".
May it be His will that very soon the "wonders" in Rashi's commentary be revealed.
And one may explain the matter according to the words of the Midrash in the portion of Bo
(regarding the redemption from Egypt) —
that "this world is betrothal
(between the Holy One, blessed be He, and Israel)
were etc. but in the days of the Messiah there will be marriage etc.
[as it is said "on that day etc. you shall call Me my husband")
at that time He gave them everything".
And although marriage will be only in the days of the Messiah,
nevertheless a semblance of this exists also now,
because all matters of the future
(including this matter of marriage)
are dependent on our deeds and service in this time
(the time of betrothal).
And based on this, the "wonders" in Rashi's commentary are understood:
Even when Jews find themselves in the time of exile,
in the land of Egypt,
"a land of affliction" —
they stand in ultimate fitness,
"you are entirely beautiful, my beloved, and there is no blemish in you". And although there is a concern that the descent into exile has had an effect on a Jew —
one says:
No! "they are my sons whom God has given me in this place",
"he showed him the document of betrothal and the document of marriage",
points with a finger and says this —
"this is my God and I will glorify Him" —
behold, our deeds and service in the time of exile,
upon which the redemption and the marriage then are dependent;
וואס אין דעם איז תלוי' די גאולה 106 און די נישואין דעמולט;
and therefore they are "my sons whom God has given me in this place":
not looking at the fact that it is "a land of affliction" —
it becomes
(Ephraim from the term)
"God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction", and
(Manasseh from the term)
"God has made me forget all my toil and all my father's house",
until Jacob himself says "by you shall Israel bless, saying: May God make you like Ephraim and like Manasseh".
And since "he showed him the document of betrothal and the document of marriage" —
the law according to the Torah regarding the relationship of a husband to his wife is —
and since "He relates His words to Jacob, His statutes and judgments to Israel",
so too must be the relationship of the Holy One, blessed be He
(the husband)
to the Congregation of Israel
(His wife)
[and on the contrary:
it begins from the conduct of the Holy One, blessed be He, in such a manner,
and from this the law among human beings is derived] —
that the Supreme One must provide all needs to Jews "her food, her clothing, and her conjugal rights he shall not diminish",
and provide all things "according to the custom of Jewish husbands"
(in the language of the marriage document),
and "one must be very careful about wronging his wife, not to distress her with words, because since her tears are frequent, the punishment for wronging her comes quickly,
and a person should always be careful about the honor of his wife etc."
(as the Alter Rebbe ruled at the end of the laws of wronging),
and furthermore:
"our Sages said: a person should honor his wife more than his own body"!
And although the husband's obligation to his wife is after the marriage,
which will be only in the days of the Messiah,
unlike now which is only betrothal —
this applies,
when the wife has sustenance for all her needs between the time of betrothal and the time of marriage,
but if she does not have it —
her groom must provide sustenance,
food and clothing *,
and also the bride's adornments
(during the twelve months until the marriage),
so that it should be "you are entirely beautiful, my beloved, and there is no blemish in you".
And regarding the practical application:
the Supreme One obligated Himself in His Torah to provide Jews with children, life, and sustenance, and profit, and in all of them profit,
and all things,
"according to the custom of Jewish husbands"!
Because even though during the time of betrothal
(before the marriage) —
the Jews have no one else from whom to receive their needs
[in addition to that which the marriage above is dependent on our actions and service now],
for the Almighty is the master of the entire world!
And especially when it speaks about Jews —
as it is ruled in the Mishnah in Bava Metzia regarding the reward that is due to every Jew,
that "even if you make for them a feast like that of Solomon in his time
(even on an ordinary weekday)
you have not fulfilled your obligation to them, for they are the children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob"
(and the daughters of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah)!
This applies even when we are still in "Bava Metzia" of exile —
it is understood that the three Bavot correspond to the three exiles and redemptions;
כמובן מזהר 116 אז די דריי בבות זיינען כנגד די דריי גליות וגאולות;
all the more so when we are already in "Bava Batra" of exile,
that even at its beginning
(of Bava Batra)
it speaks about "the partners",
"who have a courtyard in partnership, etc., both of them open into it."
That is, in spirituality:
we already have the third Holy Temple
(corresponding to the third Bava,
Bava Batra)
standing ready and built above,
we only need to draw it down below,
and we already have "the partners",
as the Almighty testifies that a Jew is "a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation",
and especially after we have made Kiddush and said "Vayechulu" on Friday night,
where "whoever prays on Friday evening and says Vayechulu, Scripture accounts it as if he became a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation",
and partners means
(as discussed many times)
that they are both equal owners in the entire matter
("the place and the stones belong to both of them"),
and both have an equal opinion,
whether to build the partition of unhewn stone,
hewn stone,
bricks or mortar
("if the custom is to build with unhewn stone, his fellow cannot say, 'I do not desire anything but unhewn stone'"),
Then, however, there is still a partition that separates between the partners,
a partition between matters of the mundane and matters of holiness and matters of commandment and "mehadrin min hamehadrin" etc.
Afterwards, one comes to the conclusion of "Bava Batra"
(which indicates the end of the exile) —
"whoever wishes to become wise should engage in monetary laws, etc., and whoever wishes to engage in monetary laws should serve Shimon ben Nannas":
Even though through engagement in monetary laws one attains wisdom —
there is, however, a higher level than wisdom
(of the world) —
the essence of Torah,
and how wisdom becomes a part of Torah.
And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said: "There is wisdom among the nations, believe...
Torah among the nations, do not believe."
And based on this, it is understood,
that even though the Mishnah itself says "whoever wishes to engage in monetary laws should serve Shimon ben Nannas",
that is, that with him was the essence of wisdom
(which comes through engagement in monetary laws),
to such an extent that if another wishes to attain wisdom, he must serve ben Nannas —
nevertheless,
Shimon ben Nannas did not have semichah
(at least at that time),
and he is called "ben Nannas",
and moreover:
the Gemara says that in the Mishnah itself, the law is not ruled like Shimon ben Nannas,
Because even though with him was the essence of wisdom
(from the aspect of engagement in monetary laws) —
this, however, is monetary laws,
the wisdom of the world
(before it becomes a part of Torah),
which is lower than Torah. Therefore, the halachah is not like Shimon ben Nannas.
That is, in service:
there are times when the mundane matters of a Jew
(children, life, and sustenance)
are separated by a partition from matters of holiness;
זיינען אפגעטיילט מיט א מחיצה פון דברי קדושה;
afterwards, one is elevated so that these very matters become a part of Torah and holiness.
And then one comes to the conclusion of "Bava Batra"
(also the conclusion of the Gemara),
And especially when one stands on the day of Shabbat, which is then most fitting to conclude a tractate in general,
and especially tractate Bava Batra and all three Bavot —
The conclusion of all three exiles,
and from it we immediately dance in,
immediately and at once,
into the third redemption,
and the third Holy Temple —
"immediately they are redeemed",
and "immediately" as it is according to halachah and according to human perception,
And out of joy and goodness of heart.
Here is the place to mention again regarding the matter of establishing
(or expanding)
new Chabad Houses
(Houses of Torah, Prayer, and Charity)
in every place;
בכל מקום ומקום;
and regarding the matter of "make for yourself a master";
און וועגן דעם ענין פון "עשה לך רב";
and especially —
regarding the preparations for the "examinations" as a preparation for the Tenth of Shevat —
the first examination that took place on the Twentieth of Tevet
(the day of the yahrtzeit of the Rambam),
the second examination on Rosh Chodesh Shevat,
which is blessed from the Shabbat Mevarchim
(with all the expressions of blessing,
and with the conclusion of "and let us say Amen",
which "greater is the one who answers Amen than the one who blesses",
as discussed many times recently regarding the conclusion of tractate Nazir),
and the third examination on the Tenth of Shevat.
And in continuation of this —
those who have provided bottles of liquor in connection with the establishment of "Chabad Houses" and the like should now go up and say "L'chaim",
and distribute a portion of it here
(since it is Shabbat),
and the remainder at the gatherings;
און די איבעריקע בא די מסיבות;
and announce the time and place and invite all those gathered here to the gatherings. That the participation of those present here in body or in soul and the like,
will add further success in all these matters.
And there is to say a hint in the weekly Torah portion regarding this matter of "Chabad House" —
immediately at the beginning of the portion:
"A man and his house",
a house literally,
in addition to the interpretation that "his house" means "his family". And as a five-year-old studying Scripture understands simply
(therefore Rashi does not need to explain it to him),
that "his house" is connected with the man and the people of his house
[Chassidus makes a great commotion that the essence of the man dwells in the house,
but a five-year-old understands it simply].
And as Onkelos translates it —
"a man and the people of his house",
meaning that through the house there also comes to the members of the household
("the people of his house"),
a change in the members of the household from before,
until also an addition of more people.
Therefore it is an appropriate thing,
that when one establishes a new Chabad House,
through which there comes to "the people of his house" —
one must make a commotion and distribute liquor at a farbrengen within the four cubits of His Holiness my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the leader of our generation,
through which the beginning of the matter is from these four cubits,
and afterwards the continuation in each Chabad House in its place.
And may it be His will that this should be a close preparation for the establishment of the House of Torah, Prayer, and Charity, speedily and in our days —
in the Third Holy Temple,
"for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations",
which then it will be with a great commotion and in an eternal manner —
an eternal house,
in the eternal redemption,
after which there is no exile,
and the Torah that one learns will endure in an eternal manner —
because then there will be no forgetfulness,
and also the prayer will be eternal and in the most elevated matters,
And this will have an influence not only upon Jews,
but "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations",
that they too should hear that "Hashem is One and His Name is One"
[as is known the dispute that the Tzemach Tzedek brings from the later authorities whether the children of Noah are warned against association,
or regarding them the matter of "call me God of gods" may be],
in our holy land,
in Jerusalem, the holy city,
on the holy mountain,
in the Third Holy Temple,
and in every Jew there will be "and I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob",
as the Alter Rebbe explains regarding the matter "one does not call 'forefathers' except for three,
and one does not call 'foremothers' except for four",
that every Jew has within himself from the three forefathers and four foremothers.
And the main point of all main points —
that all this should be in simplicity,
below ten handbreadths,
in this lowly world, below which there is no lower,
"in the midst of the land",
"and the glory of Hashem shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see".
[His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, distributed bottles of liquor to everyone.
At the time of the announcement regarding the Melaveh Malkah in connection with the descendants of the Alter Rebbe,
His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, instructed to invite all those present (not only the descendants of the Alter Rebbe)].
Since I was not invited to this Melaveh Malkah of the "descendants" of the Alter Rebbe,
even though I am also among the descendants —
therefore, although I will not participate in person,
I will at least give a participation of a physical thing from my own —
a small bottle of liquor,
on condition that it be distributed there.
And may it be His will that very soon there should be the fulfillment of the prophecy "awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust",
and the Alter Rebbe and the Rebbe, my father-in-law, among them,
and all together we will go to our holy land,
to Jerusalem, the holy city,
to the holy mountain,
and to the Third Holy Temple,
and out of joy and goodness of heart.
[His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, gave a jug of beverage to the honorable R. Sh.M.M.B., may he live, for the Melaveh Malkah of the descendants of the Alter Rebbe.
And afterwards, His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, began to play the melody "And I will empty out for you a blessing"].
Regarding the father's notes on the Zohar, there is a matter here connected to "house":
The father stands on that which is stated in the Zohar of our portion on the verse "And it was when Moses finished erecting the House of the Lord" —
"That is the Holy Temple, such as the courtyards and chambers and the Hall and the Sanctuary",
and he explains:
"That it enumerates four things,
courtyards,
chambers,
Hall,
Sanctuary,
corresponding to the four letters of the Name Havayah,
and this is the House of the Lord,
and this is that these four things that are in the Holy Temple are vessels of reception for the four letters of the Name Havayah".
And one may say the matter in the context of Divine service:
Every Jew is compared to the Holy Temple,
and just as the Holy Temple was a vessel for the indwelling of the Divine Presence,
so must every Jew be a vessel for the indwelling of the Divine Presence,
as it is stated "And I will dwell in their midst",
and the Oral Torah explained —
"It does not say 'in its midst' but rather 'in their midst',
within each and every one".
And just as the Holy Temple is a "House of the Lord",
which consists of four parts,
which are a "vessel of reception for the four letters of the Name Havayah" —
so too is it regarding "And I will dwell in their midst,
within each and every one" of Israel —
as is known that the soul of every Jew is "a part of the Lord from above, etc.",
a part of the Name Havayah, blessed be He,
and it is divided into the four letters of the Name Havayah,
And so too, the entirety of Divine service is divided into the four letters of the Name Havayah,
and in general — Yud-Hei
(the hidden things are for the Lord our God),
intellect
(Wisdom and Understanding),
and Vav-Hei are the revealed things
(and the revealed things are for us and for our children),
emotions and action,
Torah and commandments,
and as is also explained in the introduction to the book of Tanya —
that "the revealed things" refers to "the laws of the forbidden and the permitted",
and "the hidden things" refers to "awe and love in the mind and heart".
And in more particular detail, all the commandments are dependent on the four letters of the Name Havayah,
as is explained in the writings of the Ari, may his memory be for a blessing, regarding the intentions of the recitation of Shema.
And according to what is explained in the book Charedim, that all the commandments are opposite to and dependent on all the limbs of man —
it follows that all the limbs of man are also divided into the four letters of the Name Havayah.
And the Divine service in this must be,
that just as the Holy Temple is a "House of the Lord",
and this is that these four things that are in the Holy Temple are vessels of reception for the four letters of the Name Havayah" —
so must every Jew be a "House of the Lord",
meaning that all the limbs of man and his soul
(which are divided into the four letters of the Name Havayah) —
should become a "vessel of reception for the four letters of the Name Havayah",
through that which he performs his Divine service corresponding to all the four letters,
intellect,
emotions and action,
Torah and commandments,
which are opposite to his limbs.
According to this, a wondrous thing emerges:
Even though every Jew is only an individual,
and within him there is only "a part of the Lord from above" —
he is a complete "House of the Lord"
(the Holy Temple),
a vessel for all the four letters of the Name Havayah,
and for all the Torah and all the commandments
(which are opposite to the four letters of the Name Havayah,
and opposite to the limbs of man).
And corresponding to this, on the other hand:
Even though the Torah contains within itself a multitude of details and parts and a multitude of commandments which are divided into the four letters of the Name Havayah —
the entire Torah belongs to every Jew,
as it is written "The Torah that Moses commanded us is an inheritance for the congregation of Jacob",
every Jew,
immediately upon being born,
receives the entire Torah as an inheritance that has no interruption
[and to such an extent,
that if a non-Jew touches it —
it is considered theft].
And the rationale for this is —
because the essence, when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it,
as is known from the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov in the name of the Saadia Gaon
(and as the source references for this have already been noted):
Since every Jew,
and correspondingly every detail in the Torah,
is a part and a portion of the essence —
he grasps the entire essence,
the entire Torah,
and the entire "House of the Lord". And through the Torah —
the true essence,
the Almighty Himself,
as the statement of the Zohar that through the Torah, Israel and the Holy One, blessed be He, become completely one.
And this can be connected with the well-known story about the Rebbe
(the Maharash”b)
of blessed memory and his brother the Raza —
that when they were children they once played. And as is the nature of children, they played in a matter that they were accustomed to seeing:
Since they used to see how chassidim come
(in wagons or on foot)
and go in to the Tzemach Tzedek for yechidus —
they played Rebbe and chassid. One brother
(simply the older one)
put on a gartel and sat on a bench like a Rebbe,
and the second brother also put on a gartel and conducted himself like a chassid who goes to the Rebbe for yechidus in order to ask him for a blessing.
But a chassid cannot simply ask for a blessing,
rather he must also ask a question and a matter of Chassidus. So he asked the brother:
What is a Jew? The brother answered:
A Jew is a fire. He further asked him:
If so —
why when I touch you do I not burn myself?
He answered him:
Because being a Jew you are also a fire,
and fire does not burn fire!
From the very fact that the story has reached us —
two things are understood:
A) That the content is true.
And the explanation in this is:
Every Jew has a soul that is a spark from the Above,
i.e., a spark of fire. And therefore he is one with the Above. For the Above is also compared to “fire,”
as it is said “Hashem your G-d is a consuming fire.” And the unity of a Jew with the Above is through Torah —
because Torah is also fire. “Behold My words are like fire.” And as mentioned above —
that through the Torah, Yisrael and the Holy One blessed be He become completely one.
B) From this there is a lesson for each and every one.
And first and foremost from this is the lesson —
regarding the education of children:
Even though they were children,
and they simply did not even know what transpires in the Tzemach Tzedek’s room during the yechidus,
they only saw how chassidim go in there —
but from the fact that they saw that when the chassid goes out from there he looks completely different,
they understood in general the things that brought this about,
and this had such an influence on them that they went to play Rebbe and chassid. And they said the word that a Jew is a fire,
and when fire touches fire it is not burned —
and from this a lesson emerges one hundred years later for a Jew of seventy eighty years!
And may it be His will that from this “House of Hashem”
(the Holy Temple)
that is within each and every one of Yisrael —
one should come to the “House of Hashem”
(the Holy Temple)
the third,
and the inauguration of the third Holy Temple,
when there will be given “many gifts,”
just as it was at the inauguration of the Mishkan and the inauguration of the first Temple,
as it is stated in Yechezkel regarding the inauguration of the third Holy Temple,
at least in hint, and there not all the details are clarified,
but very soon will be “awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust,” and Yechezkel among them,
and he will show the Jews all the details in this,
similar to how the Gemara says that when the third Holy Temple will be built, Moshe and Aharon will be with them in order to show the Jews how to perform the service in the Holy Temple,
and speedily in our actual days,
and out of joy and goodness of heart.
The explanation in Rashi:
When a child of five years of age for Mikra learns the verse “And Moshe took his wife and his sons and mounted them on the donkey” —
a question arises for him
(as the commentaries indeed ask):
How could one donkey carry Moshe’s wife and his two sons? And furthermore:
From the fact that afterwards it is stated “And Moshe took the staff of G-d in his hand” it is understood,
that all his other belongings he loaded onto the donkey
(because if not, the verse would have had to explain how he took all the belongings) —
so how could one donkey carry all their belongings together with his wife and his sons.
[The commentaries say,
that at that time Moshe only had one son (and that which is stated “his sons” is for the future etc.).
But the difficulty in this according to the simple meaning is understood. And especially since regardless there is a question —
how could one donkey carry his wife and his son (even one son) and all the belongings].
When the five-year-old learns Rashi, Rashi answers the question incidentally
(as is Rashi's way, that he does not ask a question and give an answer,
but rather he says an explanation that prevents the difficulty from the outset):
Rashi explains "on the donkey" —
"the designated donkey,
it is the donkey that Abraham saddled for the binding of Isaac,
and it is the one upon which the King Messiah is destined to reveal himself, as it is said, 'poor and riding on a donkey'."
Since it was such a designated donkey that lived thousands of years —
it is no longer wondrous how one donkey could carry so many things!
And upon this it is understood why Rashi also quotes the word "on the donkey":
The entire aforementioned difficulty
(how could one donkey carry so much)
is based on the word "on
(the donkey)" —
that everything was placed upon
(on)
the donkey,
as opposed to if it had not said "on," one could interpret
that the donkey was only the guide,
and to the donkey was attached a wagon that dragged the people and objects,
or that the objects were hanging on the donkey,
and so forth.
Therefore Rashi also quotes the word "on" —
because if Rashi had not quoted it,
the five-year-old would have asked the aforementioned question.
But after Rashi quotes and explains that it is speaking about "the designated donkey" that lived several thousand years —
the question falls away,
as above.
However, this itself becomes a question:
Why did the Almighty need to make such a great miracle that one donkey should live so many years and be able to carry so many things —
when the Almighty could simply have given Moses our teacher two donkeys or three donkeys and so forth,
so that he could carry all his objects in a natural manner,
without any extra miracles.
This itself compels Rashi to say —
that there was a special reason here why the Almighty made such a miracle,
that it should be "the designated donkey,
it is the donkey that he saddled, etc."
And the explanation of this:
With this, the Almighty hinted to Moses an answer to his claims:
One claim that Moses had was,
that "he did not want to take greatness over Aaron his brother who was greater than him, etc." A second claim was "send now by the hand You will send,"
"by another whom it is fitting to send, for my end is not to bring them into the land and to be their redeemer in the future,"
that is, that he should send Joshua who will bring the Jews into the land of Israel,
or the Messiah our righteous one who will be their redeemer in the future.
And one does not find in the verse that the Almighty answers Moses regarding his claim "send now by the hand You will send." And even regarding his first claim
(concerning Aaron),
to which the Almighty answered "is it not Aaron your brother, I know that he can speak well, and also, behold, he is coming out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart,"
"not as you think that he will be upset with you that you are rising to greatness" —
one does not know what was before this,
and also after "he saw and was glad in his heart,"
one does not know if this was with a complete heart,
and that no trace of resentment remained, etc.
Therefore,
in order to hint to Moses our teacher regarding the two claims —
the Almighty presented him with "the donkey,"
"the designated donkey,"
and the distinctiveness of this donkey consisted of two things:
a) "it is the donkey that Abraham saddled for the binding of Isaac." And this removes the first claim
("he did not want to take greatness over Aaron his brother who was greater than him, etc.").
b) "and it is the one upon which the King Messiah is destined to reveal himself, as it is said, 'poor and riding on a donkey',"
and this removes the second claim
("send now by the hand You will send,"
"for my end is not to bring them into the land and to be their redeemer in the future"):
a) Rashi infers that the donkey that Abraham saddled was "for the binding of Isaac." And with this, an answer is hinted to the first claim:
When Abraham saddled the donkey for the binding of Isaac
(on the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He)
this was not in order to do a kindness to Isaac,
but rather a matter of bloodshed, may it not be so
(the binding of Isaac).
And nevertheless, Abraham went to do this
(and he saddled his donkey for this matter),
because so the Almighty had commanded him.
And therefore:
Since Moses was indeed afraid that he would touch Aaron
("to take greatness from Aaron his brother"),
that is, a matter of bloodshed from Aaron —
therefore the Most High provided Moses our teacher with the same donkey
("it is the donkey that Abraham saddled for the binding of Isaac") —
in order to show him,
behold you see the donkey of Abraham that led Abraham to the binding of Isaac to fulfill the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He, not looking at the fact that this was connected with bloodshed —
so too you, Moses,
must learn from this and go with the donkey,
knowing that the donkey will go with you
(just as it went with Abraham our father)
to Egypt in order to fulfill the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He, to take out Jews from Egypt,
not looking at the fact that you are afraid that thereby you will touch and be a "shedder of blood" of your brother Aaron.
b) With that which the donkey will also be the donkey upon which "the King Messiah is destined to be revealed" —
the Most High hinted to Moses regarding his second claim,
"send now by the hand of him whom You will send",
"that it is not my end to bring them into the land and to be their redeemer in the future" —
that even though Moses our teacher will indeed not be the final redeemer
(the King Messiah),
but just as "the King Messiah is destined to be revealed upon it",
so too they provide Moses our teacher,
the first redeemer
(from the exile of Egypt)
the donkey,
with which he becomes revealed
(as the redeemer of Israel)
and redeems Jews.
(It is not clear.)
Based on this it is also understood why Rashi writes the language a) "the King Messiah"
(and not "Messiah" alone),
b) "and it is he upon whom the King Messiah is destined to be revealed"
(and not "will ride upon it",
as it is stated in the verse "poor and riding upon a donkey") —
because this is connected with the claim of Moses,
"that it is not my end to bring them into the land and to be their redeemer in the future" —
a) that this is not merely "Messiah",
which also applies to King Saul and King David,
but specifically "the King Messiah",
the final redeemer. And b) furthermore, it is not relevant that "the King Messiah is destined to ride upon it",
but rather that "the King Messiah is destined to be revealed upon it",
as the final redeemer.
Based on this one will also understand why in this verse
(which Rashi brings)
it is stated "poor and riding upon a donkey"
(and not "the donkey" with the definite article):
The verse reveals that the King Messiah will generally ride upon a donkey,
not only at the time of "destined to be revealed upon it",
but also to do other things,
and of course,
that there is no necessity to say that he will always ride upon the same donkey to do all his things. Rather, it is simple that he can ride upon various donkeys.
Therefore it is stated in the verse "poor and riding upon a donkey". Because the fact that he rides generally upon a donkey is not specifically upon "the designated donkey"
(but upon various donkeys);
(נאר אויף פארשידענע חמורים);
and specifically at the time of "destined to be revealed" it will be upon this "designated donkey",
which Abraham saddled and with which Moses went to Egypt to redeem Jews.
According to the above explanation, one may add regarding the precision of the language
(which Rashi quotes from the verse)
"poor and riding upon a donkey" —
for ostensibly a five-year-old could ask a question:
When it speaks about the revelation of "the King Messiah"
(and especially with the emphasis "the King Messiah")
how does the language "poor" fit here?
This is not a difficulty. Because when the five-year-old will have this question,
he will go look
(or inquire)
what Rashi explains on the verse "poor and riding upon a donkey",
and he will see that Rashi explains that "poor" means "humble".
And with this he will understand that in this is hinted an answer to another claim of Moses our teacher:
Moses our teacher also claimed "who am I
(what am I important to speak with the kings)
that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should take out the children of Israel from Egypt".
That is, that Moses was humble
[and as we will learn further,
"and the man Moses was very humble, more than any man upon the face of the earth"].
To this is the answer:
Also the King Messiah is "poor",
"humble",
and nevertheless
(and on the contrary —
specifically for this reason)
he is "the King Messiah" who will redeem Jews.
So too must Moses know,
that not looking at this
(and on the contrary, specifically for this reason)
that he considers himself humble,
he is worthy to redeem Jews.
And based on this, all the aforementioned precise points are understood,
and additional precise points,
including also why Rashi does not copy the end of the verse
("poor and riding on a donkey")
"and on a colt, the foal of a donkey",
and also why Rashi brings only the two matters that "it is the donkey that Abraham saddled for the binding of Isaac, and it is the one upon which the King Messiah is destined to reveal himself" —
because
(as discussed many times)
Rashi does not copy the language of the Midrash,
he brings only that which is relevant to understanding the plain meaning of Scripture,
and here the matter that the donkey was created at twilight on the eve of the Sabbath is not relevant.
In today's lesson of the Rambam, the Rambam discusses the laws of a single witness:
"We do not adjudicate any judgment based on the testimony of a single witness,
neither monetary cases nor capital cases,
as it is said: 'A single witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity or for any sin,'
and from the oral tradition we learned that he does rise up for an oath, as we explained in the Laws of the Plaintiff
[and there (in the Laws of the Plaintiff):
"And if a single witness testifies that he is liable to him, behold, this one swears from the Torah,
and from the oral tradition they learned that wherever two obligate him in monetary payment, one obligates him in an oath,
and similarly they learned from the oral tradition that a single witness does not rise up for any iniquity or for any sin, but he does rise up for an oath."].
"In two places the Torah believed a single witness: in the case of a Sotah, that she should not drink the bitter waters,
and in the case of the heifer whose neck is broken, that it should not be broken, etc.
[Because the commandment of the heifer whose neck is broken is specifically at the time of "it is not known who struck him",
"but if it were known, they would not break the neck,
even if a single witness saw the killer"].
And it is noteworthy that the definition of a single witness can be learned in two ways:
A) "A single witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity or for any sin" —
means —
that the testimony of a single witness is entirely not a reality according to the Torah,
he has absolutely no power to reveal a reality.
That is, that "a single witness shall not rise up" means he does not "rise up" at all,
because he is not a reality of a witness according to the Torah. And that which he obligates an oath is only in order to remove the reality of the claim that the single witness has the power to create,
but not the reality of the matter.
B) Since the reality of two witnesses
(who are a testimony according to the Torah)
is composed of the testimony of two people,
each of whom performs and reveals a reality —
it follows to say,
that the testimony of a single witness is
(reveals)
a reality
(he does not reveal the reality),
only since he is only a single witness,
and therefore "we do not adjudicate any judgment based on the testimony of a single witness";
און דערפאר "אין חותכין דין מן הדינין על פי עד אחד";
but since his testimony reveals the reality,
it is a "weak" reality,
and therefore "we do not adjudicate any judgment based on the testimony of a single witness";
און דערפאר "אין חותכין דין מן הדינין על פי עד אחד";
but since his testimony reveals the reality,
he obligates an oath in order to remove the reality.
And according to this, the interpretation of "a single witness shall not rise up" is,
that his testimony "shall not rise up",
but it does create a reality,
only not a reality that can obligate monetary payment according to the Torah.
And along these lines is the question regarding the definition of a half-measure:
A) Whether it is essentially not a reality according to the Torah,
or B) It is a reality,
"since it is fit to combine, he eats a forbidden thing",
only not a complete reality. And the practical difference is —
the dispute between Rabbi Yehudah and Reish Lakish whether a half-measure of a prohibition is permitted or forbidden from the Torah:
"Rabbi Yehudah said it is forbidden from the Torah, since it is fit to combine, he eats a forbidden thing.
Reish Lakish said it is permitted from the Torah,
the Torah said 'eating' and there is none."
And along these lines regarding a single witness:
A) Whether the single witness is entirely not a reality according to the Torah,
or B) He is a reality,
because from him the reality of two witnesses is created,
only since the "measure" that is required according to the Torah is lacking in him,
therefore "we do not adjudicate any judgment based on the testimony of a single witness".
[Of course, then this investigation and practical difference between the two approaches regarding the definition of a single witness is only concerning a reality of clarifying witnesses,
who are only revealing the reality [that according to the first approach —
a single witness is not even a clarifying witness,
as opposed to according to the second approach],
but not concerning witnesses of establishment (like witnesses of establishment of betrothal, etc.) —
because since the Torah says "a single witness shall not rise up",
it is understood that even if a single witness can reveal a reality according to the Torah (in the second manner mentioned above),
this is only concerning clarification of matters,
but not in order to establish a reality,
because even if he is a "weak" reality and can reveal a reality,
he cannot, however, by virtue of this, establish a new reality which requires two witnesses in order to establish it.
Like one person cannot at all lift a load that requires the strength of two people].
And there is a rationale and proof according to the second approach:
According to the second approach, the law is more understandable,
that "in two places the Torah believed a single witness. In the case of a sotah that she shall not drink the bitter waters,
and in the case of a decapitated heifer that it shall not be decapitated, etc." —
because since the single witness is a reality and has the power to reveal the reality of matters
(only being a single witness, he does not have the power to obligate monetary payment),
therefore "the Torah believed a single witness in the case of a sotah that she shall not drink the bitter waters and in the case of a decapitated heifer that it shall not be decapitated",
because thereby "it became known who struck him" through the single witness;
ווייל דערביי איז געווען "נודע מי הכהו" ע"י העד אחד;
as opposed to according to the first approach
(that his testimony does not at all reveal the reality) —
the question arises why "the Torah believed",
when there was not at all a matter of "it became known who struck him",
because the testimony of a single witness is exactly like "it is not known",
and not only "it is not known who struck him",
but one cannot even accept his testimony that there is a corpse in the field,
consequently one does not know at all whether a decapitated heifer is required.
And one may add
(according to the service of God),
that since every person is a reality
(according to the Torah),
to the extent that "a person is obligated to say: for my sake the world was created" —
it is plausible to say like the second approach,
that the testimony of a single witness reveals a reality,
only that this is a weak reality,
because he is only one witness
(in addition to what was stated above,
that the reality of testimony according to the Torah (two witnesses) is composed of the testimony of two people).
Regarding this, there is another investigation —
concerning that which the Rambam writes in the lessons of the coming days:
Further on in the Laws of Testimony, the Rambam writes:
"The wicked are disqualified from testimony by Torah law, as it is said: 'Do not place your hand with the wicked to be a violent witness.'" And in the continuation of this chapter and the chapters after it —
the Rambam elaborates regarding the details of the laws in this matter.
One can learn the reason for the prohibition in two ways:
A) Because a wicked person is not in the presumption of fitness,
he is in the presumption of being a liar,
therefore he is disqualified from testimony. B) It is a law —
a decree of the verse —
that a wicked person is disqualified from testimony.
A practical difference between the two ways:
If one knows for certain that the wicked witness is trustworthy in a particular matter
(for example, in the matter of "do not go as a talebearer",
and the like):
According to the first way, the prohibition regarding testimony in this matter in which he is trustworthy does not apply to him. According to the second way, he is disqualified from testimony also in this matter.
And based on this, it is understood,
that the investigation is only concerning clarifying witnesses,
not concerning witnesses of establishment
(like witnesses of betrothal) —
because regarding witnesses of establishment
(where the testimony establishes a reality,
as above)
his trustworthiness is not relevant,
only whether he can at all establish the reality:
and since "the wicked are disqualified from testimony by Torah law", there is no practical difference whether he is trustworthy or not,
he does not have the power to establish a reality.
Nevertheless, concerning the present exile —
one certainly has more than a single witness,
and more than two witnesses,
and more than ten witnesses,
and more than a hundred witnesses, etc. —
that "all the deadlines have passed, and the matter depends only on repentance",
and regarding repentance, the law is that even if one contemplates repentance, he immediately becomes a completely righteous person, and his previous personal status is not at all relevant,
and one has the ruling of the Rambam,
that when Israel repents, "immediately they are redeemed",
"immediately" according to the law,
as Jews already say "We want Mashiach now"!
And in particular after this that his holiness, our master, teacher, and rebbe, the president of our generation, testified,
that one has already completed everything,
it only needs to be "stand ready all of you,"
and that one only needs to finish "polishing the buttons,"
and this itself one has already also done —
one has already polished and further polished and repolished, etc. —
the redemption must surely come immediately. And the third Holy Temple
(which is standing and built above)
must immediately descend "within the land,"
and "with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters" we will all go to our holy land,
and with joy and goodness of heart.
His holiness, our master, teacher, and rebbe, may he live for many good years, commanded to play "He will build the Holy Temple, etc."
[He spoke here about the instructions regarding the 24th of Tevet —
edited by his holiness, our master, teacher, and rebbe, may he live for many good years, and published in a pamphlet in practice].
His holiness, our master, teacher, and rebbe, began to play "He will build the Holy Temple, etc."
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will surely make a final blessing.
After the afternoon prayer and the evening prayer,
before Havdalah —
he commanded to play "He will build the Holy Temple, etc." for a long time,
until the time of Havdalah.
