English translation 1
The aspect of Shabbos is –
The aspect of Shabbos is –
to renew. As the simple meaning of the matter –
that from Shabbos one receives new and fresh powers for the service in the days that follow.
In the language of the Zohar1 –
Shabbos, from it are blessed all the days regarding the matter of the manna
("bread from heaven"2),
i.e., that on the day of Shabbos there was renewed above
(in heaven)
the matter of the manna,
and from it the matter of the manna is blessed in all the days,
"the matter of a day in its day"2.
From this it is understood that the blessing of Shabbos
(the blessing of the manna)
is in perfect completeness –
bread from heaven,
so that even when the bread comes down below to those who eat the manna, it remains with them in perfect completeness,
as our Sages, may their memory be blessed, say3 that the manna had no waste in it,
"was absorbed in the limbs"
(it did not exit from the intestines).
And this was so for all who ate the manna without exception:
both for those who received the manna with great effort,
and for those who had the manna readily available without any effort4. –
The difference in this was only regarding the manner of reception,
but the manna itself had no waste in it for everyone equally.
And just as this was for those who ate the manna,
the recipients of the Torah
(for the Torah was not given etc. except to those who eat the manna5),
the men of Moshe,
Moshe Rabbeinu's people6,
the generation of knowledge7 –
all matters of Moshe
(and the men of Moshe8)
are true9 and in perfect completeness –
so it is in every Shabbos throughout all the generations
(because the Torah is eternal9,
in every place and in every time),
that on Shabbos a blessing is renewed in perfect completeness for all the days of the week that follow.
It follows that on Shabbos there are two extremes:
on one hand, it is a part of the nature of creation in the manner of "they shall not cease"10,
and every Shabbos without exception
(not looking at the particular determination of that Shabbos)
blesses all the days;
איז מברך כולהו יומין;
on the other hand –
each Shabbos brings a novelty in creation,
in all the days –
a new blessing.
And the novelty itself is drawn into the "they shall not cease" of the nature of the world. As is understood from this that the blessing of the manna above
(on Shabbos)
is specifically on Shabbos
(and not on the weekdays) –
one must say that this comes from a level
(in heaven)
that is connected with the boundary of time that can distinguish between Shabbos and the weekdays.
What was said above
(that in every Shabbos in all times this is the matter of "from it are blessed all the days",
a renewal in the nature of creation)
does not contradict that the first Shabbos of the act of creation was the completion of creation
(not that "from it are blessed all the days",
the days of creation) –
because it is known11 that there was a Shabbos before the seven days of creation,
and from it are blessed all the days of the days of creation.
And this is not the place to elaborate on this,
even not in brief –
even though the matter requires an explanation,
a brief explanation or a lengthy explanation,
as it accords with the teaching of the Maggid
(brought from the Alter Rebbe12)
that time is a created thing.
I.e., that "In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth"*12 includes the creation of place and time –
so how can one say that there was a Shabbos even before the creation of time
("In the beginning He created etc.").
But since it is written thus in the Torah,
it is certainly true,
that this is the matter,
whether one understands it or not.
And according to the principle13 that "their end is embedded in their beginning and their beginning in their end",
one may say,
that the Shabbos before the act of creation,
from which a renewal is blessed in the days of creation,
is embedded in the Shabbos after the act of creation,
that then the completion and perfection of creation occurs.
Returning to our subject –
it follows that Shabbos brings a renewal in the "they shall not cease" of the nature of creation.
And this is in the manner of the general elevation of Rosh Hashanah and the month of Tishrei in general
(which comes after Shabbos,
as will be explained) –
as is explained in Chassidus the difference between
(the service of)
the month of Tishrei and
(the service of)
the month of Nissan14:
The month of Tishrei indicates a natural conduct –
because then
(on Rosh Chodesh Tishrei)
the world was created with a natural conduct;
איז באשאפן געווארן די וועלט מיט א הנהגה טבעית;
The month of Nissan indicates a miraculous conduct –
"Nissan" with two nuns,
wonders of wonders15 –
because then was the Exodus from Egypt,
the overturning of nature.
And each of these two manners brings out a different elevation in the revelation of G‑dliness:
Miraculous conduct brings out the unlimited power of the Supreme One, which is above the boundaries of the world.
Therefore, He can break the systems of nature. And the "head" of miraculous conduct is Rosh Chodesh Nissan.
And although the main storm is seemingly in the matter of the miracle –
natural conduct brings out a different elevation in the revelation of G‑dliness. One of the matters in this:
The absence of change of natural conduct,
"they shall not cease",
reveals "I, Hashem, have not changed"16 of the power of the Infinite One, blessed be He, which is in the nature of the world.
And the "head" of natural conduct is Rosh Chodesh Tishrei –
Rosh Hashanah. For on Rosh Hashanah, each and every year, all things return to their original state17
(as before creation),
and afterwards creation is renewed anew
(as it was at the time of creation the first time),
as explained in Iggeret HaKodesh,18
that "the light of each and every year ascends to its root at the time of the new moon when the month is covered in it,
and afterwards, through the shofar blast and the prayers, a new light is drawn down, etc., a higher one that had not yet shone from the days of the world, such a superior light, etc."
And it can be said that in this there is an incomparable elevation even regarding the service in the month of Nissan:
From the perspective of miraculous conduct, the matter of renewal is not a novelty –
for renewal is indeed the entire essence of a miracle. But to introduce a novelty into natural conduct, which in its own essence stands in a manner of "they shall not cease"
(from the aspect of holiness,
the power of the Infinite One, blessed be He),
the absence of change and renewal –
is a very great novelty.
And correspondingly and by way of example, each and every Shabbat introduces –
a renewal in the "they shall not cease" of the nature of creation.
In this very matter, an addition and renewal comes about through the service of man.
It is known that all matters are dependent
(and must be reflected)
in our deeds and our service,
even the matters of the future to come,19
and likewise the matters before creation.
And as it is written,20 "You yearn for the work of Your hands",
the Supreme One yearns, desires, and longs for the work of His hands,
our deeds and our service. And the Supreme One desired that through "the work of Your hands"
(the service of man)
there should come an addition and renewal in creation, more than what creation possesses in its own right.
That is, that even in the creation of the Holy One, blessed be He, in the manner of "they shall not cease"
(from the aspect of the power of the Infinite One, blessed be He)
a Jew introduces a renewal through his service –
"My children have defeated Me, My children have defeated Me."21
From this it is understood that even the matter of the renewal of nature on Shabbat and the renewal of nature on Rosh Hashanah is connected with the service of man22 –
as the saying of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe,23 that there is nothing in a way of automatic –
and the service introduces that the renewal of nature
(on Shabbat)
should be in a more elevated manner
(and likewise regarding the renewal on Rosh Hashanah –
as will be explained in the following section):
In addition to what Shabbat has from its creation by the Holy One, blessed be He,
"sanctified and established",24
a Jew introduces an addition and renewal in Shabbat through his service.25
In particular, Shabbat contains within itself both matters –
renewal and "they shall not cease",
as above;
כנ"ל;
but in general, Shabbat in its own essence is a matter of the nature of creation,
and through the service of man, an addition and renewal comes into Shabbat.
It is known that in Shabbat there are two matters:26
That Shabbat is "a remembrance of the work of creation". This is like Shabbat as it is from creation by the Holy One, blessed be He,
"sanctified and established". And afterwards
(through the service of man)
there was added in Shabbat the matter of "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt",27
miraculous conduct
(renewal),
which is above measurement and limitation. And this is connected with the addition and renewal that the service of man introduces in Shabbat,
and especially after the giving of the Torah,
more than what Shabbat has from the aspect of creation –
the matter of "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt",
which is incomparable to creation in its own right.
And in Shabbat, both matters stand together
("a remembrance of the work of creation" and "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt")
on the same day –
the drawing down of renewal into the nature of the world.
And it can be said,
that the renewal in Shabbat that comes from the service of man
(the drawing down of the unlimited (miracle,
renewal) into the "they shall not cease" of Shabbat in its own essence)
is expressed in the matter of joy on Shabbat –
"And on the day of your rejoicing –
these are the Shabbatot."28
Joy breaks boundaries.29
That is, that even in a place where the matter of boundary is applicable,
and moreover –
not only applicable,
and within a boundary,
but there where the matter of boundary exists in actuality
(even a boundary of holiness) –
joy breaks the boundary.
That is, that joy introduces the matter of renewal that is above measurement and limitation into the place of boundary,
into "they shall not cease"
(the boundary of nature and the boundary of the world).
And the matter of "Jerusalem shall be inhabited as unwalled villages"30 for the future –
the breaking of the walls and fences of holiness. The question is –
then one must have a wall? The Most High answers –
"I will be to her, says Hashem, a wall of fire"31,
that the wall and fence will be from Essence and Being32.
And the concept of joy
(which breaks a fence)
is –
איז –
"your joy",
the joy of yours,
a joy that comes through the service of man.
And based on this, one can explain the well-known question33:
How does one say "on the day of your joy, these are the Shabbats" –
for seemingly "Shabbat34 is not a time of joy, but rather a level of delight"35, unlike Yom Tov whose essence is joy –
"festivals for joy"36?
[There is an explanation of this37,
that delight includes within itself the concept of joy, because in general, two hundred maneh38,
but it is understood that in joy there is an advantage over delight,
as follows]:
And the explanation:
The concept of joy on Yom Tov comes from a command in the Torah and
(consequently)
an empowerment from Above;
נתינת כח מלמעלה;
however, regarding Shabbat, one has
(openly)
in the Torah a command only for delight,
and the concept of joy is innovated through the service of man –
"your joy",
our deeds and our service,
"the work of your hands",
for which "You yearn" the Holy One, blessed be He,
and through this comes an addition and innovation
(without limit) –
joy –
into Shabbat,
more than Shabbat has inherently,
from the aspect of "it is holy and established"
[like the general activity of Yom Tov "holy convocations",
that one calls forth and draws down from the aspect of the holy Shabbat, a word in itself *38].
It follows that in this concept of joy on Shabbat
("and on the day of your joy, these are the Shabbats")
there is the connection of these two matters:
Through the service of man, one draws down into Shabbat
(the nature of creation)
an innovation that is above measure and limitation and breaks the fence of creation –
the concept of joy.
And to add,
that the difference between the concept of delight on Shabbat
(Shabbat inherently)
and the concept of joy on Shabbat
(the addition and innovation in Shabbat through the service of man)
is like the difference between "they shall not cease" and innovation
(miracle):
Specifically joy breaks a fence29 –
a matter of innovation,
and this expresses itself in a conduct above measure and limitation –
dancing, etc.:
However, delight,
on the contrary39:
the perfection of delight is specifically in the manner of "he sits on his chair"40,
he wants to be at rest in order to have enjoyment from the thing being delighted in,
and cannot tolerate any dancing and breaking of fences,
matters that cause confusion –
like "they shall not cease",
the absence of change and innovation.
And a Jew, through his service
("your joy")
draws down joy –
innovation –
into the "they shall not cease" of the delight of Shabbat.
All the above is regarding each and every Shabbat throughout the year
(in the manner of "they shall not cease",
as above);
כנ"ל);
but this matter stands more openly in the Shabbats of the month of Elul:
Elul is an acronym for "I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me"4142. And this indicates service from below upward,
first the arousal from below
("I am for my Beloved"),
afterwards the arousal from above in response to the arousal from below
("and my Beloved is for me"43).
That is, that the service of the month of Elul consists of service from below –
our deeds and our service,
"the work of your hands",
like the concept of "your joy",
which opens an innovation in creation
(because "You yearn for the work of Your hands").
And the reason for this –
because the month of Elul is a preparation for Rosh Hashanah
(and the month of Tishrei),
when there is a renewal in the "they shall not cease" of creation,
which innovation is opened through the service of man. Therefore, one must have a preparation similar to this –
the service of "I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me"
(service from below)
in the month of Elul,
which opens an innovation in creation.
And in more detail:
The four letters of "Elul" are an acronym for "I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me", indicating four stages in the service of Elul:
First of all, one begins with "I" –
the existence of man. And this "I"
(the existence of man)
itself stands in a manner of "for my Beloved" –
the service of man to serve his Master
(my Beloved);
(דודי);
"I" alone –
one cannot know what its content is. But when one says "I am for my Beloved", it means the service of man.
And this then brings "and my Beloved"
(with a vav that adds) –
I will go up to the palm tree,
and in the manner of "to me" –
that "my Beloved" becomes unified with the "I"
(the existence of man),
until it is called by his name,
i.e., that even though it speaks about "my Beloved",
the Supreme One Who is above the measure and limitation of the world,
He is drawn into "to me",
in the existence and boundaries of man
[similar to what is stated regarding the Torah –
that the Torah is the Names of the Holy One, blessed be He44 (above the world),
and together with this "it is called by his name"45 (not because someone in the world happened to merit this...,
but because this is the truth,
as related in the Torah of Truth)],
namely –
the connection of the existence of man
(the nature of the world in general)
with G‑dliness
(similar to the renewal in "they shall not cease" of the nature of the world).
And the first letter of "Elul" is the Alef,
acronym for "Ani" (I). From this it is understood that "Ani" is the essence and includes within itself and gives forth the content of the entire month of Elul –
as is known that the first letter is the essence46 and includes within itself the entire word and leads all the details of the word
(just as the head of man includes within itself the life-force of the entire body,
and leads all the powers even as they stand in their place),
similar to what is explained regarding Rosh HaShanah47 and Rosh Chodesh48 etc.
That is, that the essence and "head" of Elul –
which includes all the other details of Elul –
is the "Ani",
the existence and service of man. And this includes and leads the other details in Elul,
even as they stand in their place.
From this it is understood,
that in the Sabbaths of the month of Elul the concept of
(Shabbat in general –)
renewal through the service of man in the "they shall not cease" of nature is revealed even more,
as preparation for the renewal of creation on Rosh HaShanah.
In the month of Elul itself –
it is understood that the further one progresses in the month of Elul and the closer one comes to Rosh HaShanah,
the stronger the preparations for the month of Tishrei must be,
and consequently the concept of "Ani" is increasingly emphasized
(the service of man)
which must bring about renewal in the nature of creation.
All the more so when one comes to the last Shabbat of the month of Elul,
the conclusion and seal of the Sabbaths in the month of Elul,
the Shabbat before Rosh HaShanah
(which blesses Rosh HaShanah49) –
then the concept of "Elul" and "Ani" stands with greater strength and power.
And the explanation of the matter:
As stated above
(section 4),
(ס"ד),
nothing is automatic and all matters are dependent on our actions and our service. So too the renewal of creation on Rosh HaShanah is dependent on the service of man,
for "You desire the work of Your hands",
and this service has the power to bring about a novelty in the creation of the Holy One, blessed be He.
That is,
notwithstanding that on Rosh HaShanah of the previous year the world was renewed anew,
and from this new life-force was drawn throughout the entire year –
a Jew must, through his service during the entire year,
and especially in the month of Elul
(preparation for Rosh HaShanah),
bring about that on the coming Rosh HaShanah, may it be for good, the renewal of creation should be in a more elevated manner.
One might think,
since the renewal of creation was already drawn on Rosh HaShanah of the previous year,
what need is there for him to add further?
And especially according to what is stated in the Tur50,
"What nation is like this nation that knows the character of its G‑d... they wear white and wrap themselves in white... because they know that the Holy One, blessed be He, will perform a miracle for them",
because they know that they will be vindicated in judgment.
And furthermore:
Since "the custom of Israel is Torah"51,
to the extent that a custom is even higher than Torah,
as understood from the fact that in several matters custom overrides law52 –
it is already "from the beginning of the month of Elul" –
"it is customary that when a person writes a letter to his friend... he hints to him... that he should merit in the coming days of judgment for good to be written and sealed in the book of good life"53.
That is, that even in a letter,
which is a temporary matter
(as explained in Chassidus54),
and even a letter that does not speak about Rosh HaShanah and a good writing and sealing etc.,
but about entirely other matters –
one wishes the other a good writing and sealing. And this requires no effort –
one need only remind him about it,
he does it simply –
to such an extent is it a clear matter that one will have a good writing and sealing.
Nevertheless,
in addition to all this, a Jew must add even more in his service
(in the month of Elul) –
"I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine" –
in order to bring about that the renewal of nature on Rosh Hashanah should be in a more elevated manner.
And in the month of Elul itself –
this additional aspect is emphasized in the Shabbosos of the month of Elul,
when the service of Jews to renew the nature of creation is further underscored,
"and on your joyous days – these are the Shabbosos";
"וביום שמחתכם אלו שבתות";
and in them themselves –
it stands with greater strength and power on the last Shabbos of the month of Elul,
the Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah.
The connection between this Shabbos
(the last)
before Rosh Hashanah and Rosh Hashanah
(the matter of renewal in the nature of creation) –
is also seen explicitly in the Torah portion read on this Shabbos –
Parshas Nitzavim,
which "we always read before Rosh Hashanah"55,
and sometimes
(as in this year) –
Nitzavim-Vayeilech,
and the Haftarah of "Sos Asis"56:
When there is a state of "You are standing today, all of you, before Hashem your G-d" –
it is understandable the joy that this brings out in a Jew;
איז פארשטאנדיק די שמחה וואס דאס ברענגט ארויס ביי א אידן;
what greater joy can there be than the joy of standing "before Hashem your G-d"! And especially according to the explanation of Chassidus57 that "Nitzavim" is not merely in the presence of Hashem your G-d,
but "before Hashem your G-d",
in the innerness of Hashem your G-d –
this adds even more to the joy.
From this it is understood that on Shabbos Parshas Nitzavim
(the portion that is always read on this Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah)
the matter of "and on your joyous days – these are the Shabbosos" is emphasized and revealed even more –
the innovation and breaking of boundaries of joy that comes through the service of man. And this is an innovation
(joy)
that comes from the matter of "Nitzavim",
strength and absence of change
("they shall not cease").
This matter is also seen in today's Haftarah. And in this, one need not seek explanations,
because the connection is seen explicitly and simply:
The beginning of the Haftarah is –
"Sos Asis baHashem". And "Sos Asis" is the matter of joy –
the innovation and breaking of boundaries that comes through the service of man. And especially "Sos Asis" twice –
an extra emphasis on the matter of joy,
as is known in Halacha that when a matter is stated twice it means multiple times,
and it is essential58.
Further:
Chassidus explains59 that "Asis" is a causative term,
meaning that Jews cause joy
("Asis")
"baHashem",
the elevation of "You shall desire the work of Your hands".
That is, Jews cause a joy above, even in a level of "baHashem" where there is no matter of joy from their own side
(because if there is the matter of joy there,
then what is the novel point that Jews cause joy there,
"Asis"?)!
And it can be said,
that this is the aforementioned matter,
that in the level of "I, Hashem, have not changed"
(from which comes "they shall not cease" of the nature of creation)
Jews cause, through their service, an innovation
(the matter of joy).
And this "Sos Asis"
(joy)
itself is drawn down –
"all the days of the world"
(as the conclusion of the Haftarah),
meaning, in a constant and eternal manner,
"they shall not cease".
This is also seen in today's portion –
Parshas Nitzavim-Vayeilech:
It has been discussed many times60 that "Nitzavim" and "Vayeilech" are opposites:
"Nitzavim" indicates a state of strength without movement or change
("they shall not cease") –
that one stands firmly in one place,
"Nitzavim",
as it is written61 "she arose... and also stood". And especially according to the explanation62 that "Nitzavim" is from the term "the king's deputy"63,
meaning that the "deputy" is with the strength of a king,
the ultimate strength
(without change),
because no one can express opinions against a king,
for "there is none above him except Hashem his G-d"64. Even a mortal king has "none above him except Hashem his G-d". And "the earthly kingdom is like the heavenly kingdom"65 –
the strength of the kingdom below derives from the strength of the kingdom above.
"Vayeilech" means exactly the opposite –
the matter of going,
that he does not remain standing
("deputy")
in one place without change,
rather he keeps going,
innovation and change to the utmost. And especially according to what is explained in Chassidus66 that true going is –
a going without limit,
beyond comparison.
And when Parshas Nitzavim-Vayeilech are joined –
they become one portion,
only a portion that has two names67
[like a single person who has two names68].
That is, Nitzavim-Vayeilech emphasizes the connection of both matters –
the innovation of "Vayeilech" within the "they shall not cease" of "Nitzavim".
And this is analogous to the matter of joy that a Jew draws into Shabbat, whose essence is delight.
Joy is a matter of "Vayelech",
one does not remain in one place,
rather one goes beyond measure and limitation,
breaking boundaries.
However, delight is in a manner of "Nitzavim",
sitting on a chair,
as above.
The connection of "Nitzavim Vayelech" is also seen in the content of Parshat Vayelech:
At the beginning of Parshat Vayelech there is a glaring difficulty to which one does not pay attention:
When was "Vayelech Moshe"? At the time Moshe said "I am one hundred and twenty years old today, I can no longer go out and come in"69,
"I am not permitted, for permission was taken from me and given to Yehoshua",
or "to go out and come in in matters of Torah,
teaching that the traditions and wellsprings of wisdom were sealed from him"69.
This is a contradiction:
"I can no longer go out and come in" –
is the exact opposite of "Vayelech"!
Furthermore:
At the time of "today my days and years are complete"69,
when Moshe stands at the ultimate perfection,
so that he lacks not a single moment
(according to the simple interpretation of "my days and years are complete") –
how does the matter of "Vayelech" fit then,
he has nowhere to go,
because he stands at the ultimate perfection
(it would have been fitting that it be "Nitzavim",
that he remain in his place) –
how does "Vayelech" come to him then?!
It is understandable
(the first time in the Torah)
"And Moshe rose and went to Dasan and Aviram" –
it is understandable,
because when one must quell a dispute,
there must be a going and an addition in service. But when Moshe stands at the ultimate perfection –
why must there be "Vayelech Moshe"?
The explanation of this is –
that this is precisely the point:
Specifically at a time when one is in a situation that seemingly should be "Nitzavim"
(I have not changed,
they shall not cease) –
specifically there one must draw forth a novelty and a going
("Vayelech"):
When Moshe stood on his last day,
and he felt that then another matter came to him,
that "I am one hundred and twenty years old today",
and "I can no longer go out and come in",
"the traditions and wellsprings of wisdom were sealed from him" –
Moshe knew that "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created only for His glory"70,
therefore he understood that when another moment and a new standing and situation comes to him,
he must use that very thing for an addition to the glory of the Holy One, blessed be He,
more than was through his service during all those days and years at the ultimate perfection
("complete");
("מלאו");
Therefore it brought about in him "Vayelech Moshe",
a new going,
and he went to tell the Jewish people a new matter –
that "I am one hundred and twenty years old today, I can no longer go out and come in",
because "permission was taken from me and given to Yehoshua",
"Yehoshua is the one who passes before you as Hashem spoke",
and now the time had come to transfer the leadership to Yehoshua with a generous eye,
"face like the moon"70,
and one matter for a generation and not two matters for a generation71,
"as Hashem spoke",
and Moshe added from his own in this –
"And Moshe called Yehoshua and said to him before the eyes of all Israel, be strong and courageous etc."72,
and the rest of the details that Moshe conveyed to the Jewish people in this parshah.
And so too –
when Moshe stands at the ultimate perfection,
"today my days and years are complete",
he does not remain standing there,
rather he goes further –
"Vayelech",
a going to a higher level.
And this "Vayelech Moshe" itself was while Moshe was a soul in a body
(i.e., that the novelty and boundlessness is drawn into the nature of the world,
soul in a body),
and in the "wilderness of the nations"73:
It does not speak of when Moshe stands and serves74 on high75
(soul without a body),
after his one hundred and twenty years,
for there the "Vayelech Moshe" and conveying to the Jewish people all these details in the parshah could not be.
Certainly there are for Moshe many ascents after the ascent of his soul on high,
and it is known that also above there is the matter of time76
(as they bring77 the proof for this from the Chassidic discourse etc.78),
and as it is brought in Chassidus79 that Moshe
(and the Patriarchs)
has already been sitting for three thousand years in Gan Eden and is elevated there from level to level,
in addition to the ascents during his one hundred and twenty years.
But "Vayelech Moshe" speaks about his going and ascent while still being a soul in a body. And as it will also be later in the future redemption –
that Moshe and Aharon are with them80,
souls in bodies,
as is simply understood,
because specifically as a soul in a body can they rule on the questions and doubts regarding the laws of the offerings.
The lesson from this regarding each and every one:
From the aspect of the Moshe within him81, every Jew has the potential,
that even when he is already in a state of "my days and years are fulfilled" –
surely every Jew lives until one hundred and twenty years,
but in particular there is this "my days and years are fulfilled" each and every day,
at the time he performs his service in completeness –
he has the potential that even now there should be "and he went",
a new and incomparable progression.
And regarding our matter:
Even when one stands in the month of Elul,
and is already blessed with a good writing and sealing
(as above),
he nevertheless has everything in ultimate perfection –
so what does he need to add now? They tell him,
that this is the ultimate perfection relative to the state until now,
but now another day has arrived –
there must be "ascending in holiness"
(and certainly "not descending")
82 in his service,
"I am for my Beloved and my Beloved is for me",
and he must attain a higher level in the renewal of creation on the coming Rosh Hashanah.
And particularly when one stands on a Shabbat in the month of Elul,
and especially –
the last Shabbat of the month of Elul,
the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah
(as discussed above),
And now itself –
at the time of ratzon deratzon83,
that although the time of Shabbat is connected with "there is84 in it neither eating nor drinking"85 –
Chassidim demonstrate a cleverness and they make at that time a Chassidic farbrengen,
and they arouse that one should say "L'Chaim" on physical wine or physical whiskey. One cannot fulfill it only by saying "L'Chaim" on the words of Torah that he hears,
rather he must say "L'Chaim" on a physical thing.
And particularly when one stands on Shabbat, "You are standing today, all of you, before Hashem your G-d" –
there is no better time to say "L'Chaim",
and the Almighty answers "for life and for blessing"86,
"for a good life and for peace"86,
in all matters,
And "L'Chaim" in physicality,
souls in bodies,
where also a soul derives pleasure from it.
L'Chaim.
In addition to this general lesson mentioned above from this Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah in the service of a Jew as preparation to attain the renewal of creation on Rosh Hashanah,
one must also derive from this a lesson from the specific determination of this year
(according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov87):
This year the festival of Rosh Hashanah occurs on Shabbat. And this gives a specific directive regarding the preparations in the service of man for Rosh Hashanah in this year:
Rosh Hashanah in general requires preparation. And in general –
the preparation consists of the days of Selichot. But in this itself there are variations from year to year:
When Rosh Hashanah occurs on Thursday –
one has the days of Selichot as preparation for Rosh Hashanah.
When Rosh Hashanah occurs on Monday or on Tuesday –
one has more than a full week of Selichot.
When Rosh Hashanah occurs on Shabbat –
one has a preparation from all six days of the week in order,
so that then one has completeness in the preparations for Rosh Hashanah
(more than in the other determinations).
And the explanation:
The principle is that "one who toils on Erev Shabbat will eat on Shabbat"88. That although it says "Erev Shabbat",
it nevertheless means in general all six days of the week89. As one sees it simply –
that the "will eat on Shabbat" is not specifically from that which he "toiled" on the sixth day
(the actual Erev Shabbat),
rather from the toil during all six days of the week. But on the other hand –
specifically from the toil during the six weekdays before Shabbat,
not from the previous week,
because the "will eat" from the toil of the previous week was on the previous Shabbat.
And accordingly it emerges,
that specifically when Rosh Hashanah occurs on Shabbat,
one has a complete preparation of "toil" during all six days of the week.
In contrast, when Rosh Hashanah occurs on Thursday,
one has a preparation of only four days. And when Rosh Hashanah occurs on Monday or Tuesday –
there is indeed more than six days of Selichot,
but in the meantime there is a Shabbat,
when there is an ascent and new drawing down,
and the "will eat" from the toil of the days of Selichot before that Shabbat is on that previous Shabbat,
not on Shabbat Rosh Hashanah.
And the completeness
(of the six days of preparation for Rosh Hashanah)
is revealed in the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah –
for from it the days of preparation for Rosh Hashanah are blessed,
and a blessing commensurate with the service of the days of Selichot and preparation for Rosh Hashanah –
to attain on Rosh Hashanah a renewal in the nature of creation in the most elevated manner.
And in particular, Rosh Hashanah itself is on Shabbat –
"the day of your rejoicing, these are the Shabbats"
[which is the discourse that begins several maamarim of Rosh Hashanah fixed when the festival of Rosh Hashanah occurs on Shabbat] –
the innovation and breaking of boundaries of joy that comes through the service of man.
In this itself, there is additional completeness in a leap year:
It is stated many times,
that a leap year is called a "complete year"90. This indicates that in such a year one has special powers so that the service should be in a manner of completeness and perfection.
And the completeness and perfection of a leap year extends until the end of the leap year,
and on the contrary –
everything follows the conclusion91,
in the month of Elul
(the end of the year)
of the leap year, the completeness and perfection stands with greater strength and vigor. And furthermore –
in the very end of the month of Elul,
the days of Selichot and preparation for Rosh Hashanah.
It follows,
that because it is a leap year,
a complete year,
there is additional completeness and perfection in the days of Selichot and preparation for Rosh Hashanah in this year –
which are in a manner of perfection in this year
(even on Erev Shabbat during all six weekdays).
This gives additional powers as preparation for Rosh Hashanah to effect on Rosh Hashanah a renewal in the nature of creation.
And especially –
in this Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah, which blesses all the days of preparation for Rosh Hashanah,
as above.
From this there is a practical directive,
and a directive for all Jews,
"your heads, your tribes, etc., your little ones, your wives, etc., from the hewer of your wood to the drawer of your water"92
(about whom it is written "you are standing today, all of you, before Hashem your G-d"):
In addition to what was discussed above regarding the superiority of this Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah,
when a Jew receives special powers to prepare for Rosh Hashanah and to effect a renewal of creation on Rosh Hashanah –
there is additional superiority in this year,
when the Shabbat blesses a full week of days of preparation for Rosh Hashanah,
and it is a complete year.
It is therefore understood,
that on this Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah,
and certainly on the Shabbat of Rosh Hashanah itself –
it must be apparent upon a Jew and in his service that it is such a Shabbat.
And this can also be made understandable to "your little ones" and to "the hewer of your wood" and "the drawer of your water" –
that they too must prepare for Rosh Hashanah.
As the matter is simply:
A little girl also lights a candle of Rosh Hashanah,
and she recites the blessing "to light the candle of the Day of Remembrance"93,
and when the festival of Rosh Hashanah occurs on Shabbat –
she recites a different blessing,
"to light the candle of Shabbat and of the Day of Remembrance".
That is, it is apparent to her that there is a difference between Rosh Hashanah in every year and the festival of Rosh Hashanah that occurs on Shabbat.
One must explain to her,
that the difference corresponds to the fact that on the festival of Rosh Hashanah that occurs on Shabbat, there is additional light of "the candle of Hashem is the soul of man"94,
therefore one then makes a special blessing and drawing down. Consequently, this must be expressed in the conduct of the little girl.
And regarding this Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah –
one can explain to her that there is an addition in the fixed nature of this year,
as above.
And so one can also explain to a little boy.
Fortunate are the parents who find the words with which they can explain this to their children –
"I have toiled and found"95. And the main thing –
they must show a living example from themselves,
"adorn yourself first and then adorn others"96,
which has the strongest effect on their children,
when they see that the father and mother stand in an entirely different manner on this Shabbat and on Shabbat Rosh Hashanah, etc.
On this Shabbat there is another matter fixed in this year –
seemingly a personal matter of mine, but
[the Rebbe shlita smiled,
and said:]
Since I am the speaker,
so to speak,
I may take the permission to speak about it:
This Shabbat is the 23rd of Elul –
the yahrtzeit of my grandfather97.
A matter from this grandfather from which everyone can take a directive is –
from the fact that the grandfather was one of those who "sat" by the Rebbe Maharash.
That is, after his wedding he traveled
(or went)
to the Rebbe Maharash in order to sit and learn Torah there98.
The lesson from this for everyone –
and with an introduction:
A bochur before the wedding must learn Torah –
What is the novelty?!
This is indeed all his affairs –
For he has no other concerns that would exempt him from the obligation of Torah study, which applies to every single Jew.
And on the contrary:
A bochur should be ashamed if another needs to arouse him to learn Torah. For since his bar mitzvah he has an obligation from the Torah to learn Torah,
and even before bar mitzvah –
he has an obligation from the aspect of the law of education99.
That is, before he thinks about money and about pride and honor and even about health –
his main occupation must be the study of Torah!
And as stated –
what is the novelty,
מאי קמ"l,
it is a simple thing:
When the class,
the cheder or the yeshiva is open –
there is no doubt that he must be in the yeshiva and learn Torah there,
there is no other possibility.
Where else should a bochur be? But even when he is given time for eating, drinking, and sleeping,
because of "and you shall greatly guard your souls"100 –
he also takes away from that time to learn Torah!
And even when the bochur is convinced, or he convinces himself,
or even if this also has a place in the Shulchan Aruch –
that he needs to get married,
at which time he must have
(as the Rambam writes101),
that "the way of men of understanding is that a person should first establish a trade that supports him,
and afterwards acquire a house, and afterwards marry a wife, as it is said102 'Who is the man who has planted a vineyard and not redeemed it...'" –
the meaning is not
that the bochur
(who is preparing to get married)
should be entirely occupied with matters of livelihood, etc.,
but obviously and simply it means
that a part of the day he must occupy himself with this,
but the important part of the day he must learn Torah,
and in this he must be completely immersed,
in a manner of fixed and settled study.
Not in a manner
that when he learns Torah he looks at the clock –
when will the time come that he can close the book and go engage in his business and commerce,
but on the contrary:
When he is told that the time has come to go engage in his business and commerce faithfully –
he is distressed!!
And also when he occupies himself with his business and commerce –
it is in a manner of "your work [should be] temporary" and "your Torah [should be] fixed"103:
He indeed fulfills business and commerce faithfully104,
and gives charity
(a tenth or a fifth, etc.),
but in what is he immersed –
he is immersed in the Torah that he learned earlier and that he will learn later,
and work is for him in a manner of temporariness,
at least relative to his soul and his Torah!
And since this is demanded of him,
it is a proof that the Almighty has given him the powers to carry this out,
for the Almighty knows his standing and situation,
and nevertheless He demands this of him.
So the question is –
how does he know how to use the powers? He is told –
that for this the Almighty has invested in him a soul in a body with a good inclination,
and he must obey the soul and the good inclination.
But not that he should become a halachic authority regarding himself,
when he must learn Torah and when he must do other things! How can you possibly be a halachic authority on yourself?!
When it comes to physical health –
he runs to another,
a doctor,
and asks him how he should conduct himself,
and spends money on this, etc.;
און גיט אויף דעם אויס געלט וכו';
When it comes to the health of his soul –
he asks his evil inclination
whether he should learn Torah or first run to the "pizzeria"!..
In former times one did not need to speak about such things at a farbrengen,
and especially not in the month of Elul,
and in a leap year, etc....
Returning to the lesson of today's yahrtzeit:
That a bochur before the wedding must learn Torah –
is not a novelty,
it is not for this that one needs a lesson from Chabad and from the Rebbe Maharash,
as explained at length above.
From the conduct of the grandfather,
the baal hayom of 23 Elul,
one learns the novel idea,
that even after his wedding
[when he then comes to his completeness,
as it is written "male and female He created them" (and only then) "He called their name Adam"105],
when he already has a millstone around his neck,
and in the marriage contract is written his obligation to support his wife and household,
and "her food, her clothing, and her conjugal rights he shall not diminish"106,
and especially in the first year after the wedding,
when there is the obligation "he shall be free for his house for one year and shall gladden his wife whom he has taken"107 –
even then the grandfather stipulated a condition,
and he accepted and agreed,
that he would go to study Torah and be a "sitter" by the Rebbe the Maharash,
apparently "sitter" also from the term settlement and deliberation
(even though by the Rebbe the Maharash there was not yet a yeshiva],
the study of Torah in a manner of permanence and beneficial delay.
And with this he laid the foundation and stamp for all the days of his life,
and he was successful,
for afterwards he became a rabbi in Nikolyub,
as the successor of his grandfather,
and was known as a halachic decisor,
in addition to his fear of Heaven etc.
Why is this told to us?
It is not merely to tell a beautiful story that happened,
but rather so that one should derive from it a lesson for the present and the future and in every place,
also in the United States:
That even after the wedding,
when one already has a millstone around his neck etc. –
one must first and foremost lay the foundation for all of life,
that before entering into private life –
one should become a "sitter",
to study Torah with deliberation and permanence,
so that this becomes his entire existence,
and in a manner of "from the outset, transcend"
(the concept of the Rebbe the Maharash108).
And this becomes the foundation for his private life afterwards,
and also for his communal matters,
as he is connected with the public
(as our Sages said109 do not separate yourself from the community,
and it is known that in the service of man one must also have the power of the many and the power of the community,
as explained in Kuntres Hachaltzu110).
So the question is –
this is seemingly a difficult service? He was given a soul,
which has the power to act upon the body,
until one achieves "with all your heart –
with both your inclinations"111,
that his study of Torah should be with deliberation and permeate his entire existence –
his "I"
(as discussed above the lesson of Elul, the acronym "I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine",
all the more so on 23 Elul,
when it is emphasized that Torah permeates his "I").
And one need not come to coercion,
one need only awaken him from sleep –
then immediately upon awakening from his sleep112 he begins to cry out automatically
(without effort)
"I gratefully thank You, King etc.":
The very reality that the Supreme One is a King –
is a simple matter that one need not even clarify,
even on an ordinary day
(not specifically on Rosh Hashanah);
(לאו דוקא בראש השנה);
What is an "I" that proclaims and declares every single morning –
that "I gratefully thank You, King etc.",
that he has self-nullification and gratitude to the King,
and in a manner of "before You",
to His innermost essence.
And this permeates the existence of the person – "
(I gratefully thank)
I",
אני",
which includes his entire existence,
not only his head,
but also his feet and his shoes,
and even his galoshes,
which are lower even than his shoes
[as is known the questions in the later authorities113 regarding wearing galoshes on Shabbat [in the early authorities one does not find a discussion about this,
because then,
apparently,
there were no galoshes114],
whether this is in the category of a garment over a garment or a protector over a garment etc.,
with the entire discussion about this]:
His entire "I" –
his entire existence,
also his galoshes –
consists of "I gratefully thank...
before You, King",
gratitude to the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He!
And in the lesson of 23 Elul
(the study of Torah in a manner of deliberation even after the wedding)
the emphasis of this comes from the fact that 23 Elul is on Shabbat of Parshat Nitzavim-Vayelech –
that the study of Torah in a manner of deliberation must be in a manner of "Nitzavim" and "Vayelech",
As discussed above
(section 10)
(ס"י)
the lesson of connecting both of them together,
and as has already been discussed at length and has already been disseminated,
it will not be repeated now.
And the general point –
that the study of Torah must be with all strength
(“Nitzavim”),
and together with this –
in a manner of going
(“Vayeilech”),
“they go from strength to strength”115,
at every moment he is elevated relative to the previous moment,
until a soul brings about that it becomes “those who walk among those who stand”116,
the matter of walking also “among those who stand”,
angels come,
and through this it also reaches their influence of bounty down here,
and an influence in a manner of “from the outset, over”,
the concept of the Rebbe Maharash,
with whom there was a Baal Shem Tov-like conduct117,
and the influences that come through him are in a Baal Shem Tov-like manner,
i.e., that in nature itself –
it is in a miraculous way.
As is known what chassidim relate,
that once, while walking on the road with his students, the Baal Shem Tov knocked on a shop and immediately left. His students asked him –
What is this? From either side:
Since he knocked on the shop of a certain person,
it is a proof that he needs to have a connection with him,
then why did he not wait until that person would come to the door?!
The Baal Shem Tov answered,
that “and Hashem your God will bless you in all that you do
(specifically)
”118,
" 118,
he had to make a vessel,
the “you do”,
so the knocking on the shop was his “you do”,
and afterwards there will be “and Hashem your God will bless you” and it depends on the Above how He wishes to continue the blessing!
Since it is told to all Jews,
it has relevance to all of them –
both to those who are already there,
and also to those who are not yet there
(openly),
each one of them was created to serve his Maker
(I was created to serve my Maker,
consequently the Above certainly continues to him all the influences and effluences that he needs to attain,
from His full, open, holy and broad hand,
so that the livelihood runs after him (as the above story of the Baal Shem Tov),
and in a manner of “from the outset, over”,
so that even as much as he estimates that he deserves –
he receives it in a manner of “from the outset, over”.
And especially standing before the new year –
every Jew is blessed with a good inscription and sealing,
they are inscribed and sealed immediately119 in the book of the completely righteous120,
for a good and sweet year,
in both physical and spiritual together,
with good that is seen and revealed,
with children, life, and ample sustenance, and with all ample things,
and from proper health,
and with joy and a good heart.
Discourse (similar to a talk)
beginning “Sos Asis” etc.
There is also a fixed order on Shabbat to speak about a topic in the fixed lessons
(at least briefly):
in Rashi on our parshah;
אין פרש"י בפרשתנו;
in the notes of the Tzemach Tzedek on the Zohar;
אין די הערות פון דעם טאטן אויפן זהר;
in Pirkei Avot;
אין פרקי אבות;
and in the daily lesson in the Rambam’s book.
Regarding Rashi on our parshah –
several topics in our parshah were proposed,
but most surprisingly they did not settle on a topic that is connected to the time of year –
as usual that one endeavors to connect the lessons with the time of year.
In our parshah
(Parshas Vayeilech)
there is a prominent topic that is connected to the time of year –
at the end of the year and in proximity to the beginning of a new year.
I.e., “at the end” of the year,
as is known that “at the end” has two meanings121:
the end of the year122 and the beginning of the year122:
“At the end of seven years, at the appointed time of the year of Shemittah, on the festival of Sukkot, when all of Israel comes to appear before Hashem your God in the place He will choose, you shall read this Torah etc. Gather the people etc.”
That “at the end” here means both things,
the end of the year and the beginning of the year –
as Rashi explains here
(on “at the end of seven years”):
“In the first year of Shemittah, which is the eighth year,
and why does it call it the year of Shemittah,
because the seventh year still applies in it regarding the harvest of the seventh year that goes out at the conclusion of the seventh year.”
I.e. –
ד.ה. –
that this is at the beginning of the eighth year,
but it is called the end of the year of Shemittah.
One must understand –
Why does Rashi not address a simple question that a five-year-old studying Scripture could ask:
Why does the verse need to be so lengthy in expressing the time of the mitzvah of Hakhel? A five-year-old studying Scripture is accustomed that wherever the Torah gives a date for a mitzvah –
The Torah states it simply and briefly:
"In the first month, on the fifteenth day of the month, the Festival of Matzot to Hashem" 123,
"Seven weeks you shall count for yourself, and you shall make the Festival of Shavuot to Hashem" 123,
"In the seventh month, on the first of the month, there shall be a rest for you, a remembrance of blowing, a holy convocation" 124,
"On the tenth of this seventh month, it is Yom Kippur" 124, "On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, the Festival of Sukkot" 125 –
Here, the Torah should have written,
that "in the eighth year, on the Festival of Sukkot" the mitzvah of Hakhel should be,
Why does the Torah write a whole lengthy passage,
1) "At the end of seven years",
2) "In the appointed time of the year of Shemittah",
3) "On the Festival of Sukkot",
4) "When all Israel comes to appear",
5) "In the place that He will choose"?
The Gemara 125 asks a similar question:
"And all these, why do I need them",
and answers that each sign provides a different teaching. But:
a) The explanation in the Gemara is according to halachah,
not according to the plain meaning. b) And primarily:
The question in the Gemara is why one needs each sign individually;
די שאלה אין גמרא איז צוליב וואס דארף מען האבן יעדער סימן באזונדער;
However, the aforementioned question in the plain meaning of Scripture is –
Why does one need signs at all,
when one could simply write "in the eighth year, on the Festival of Sukkot"?
And as will be explained below.
In the notes of my father on the Zohar of Parshat Vayelech,
he comments 126 on what is stated in the Zohar 127 "Fortunate are Israel that the Holy One, blessed be He, desired them, and because He desired them, He called them sons, firstborn, holy, brothers". And he explains that "the meaning of 'desired' is the aspect of will,
the aspect of Keter",
with further details on this. And one may add,
that "because He desired them",
from the aspect of the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, in Israel
(Keter),
"He called them sons, firstborn, holy, brothers",
which correspond to the three intellects Chabad 128.
One must still understand –
What is the connection of this to the time,
in proximity to Rosh Hashanah
[since Parshat Vayelech is always in proximity to Rosh Hashanah] –
which is not the subject of the notes to explain.
In general, the connection to Rosh Hashanah is –
Because on Rosh Hashanah the matter of "Make Me king over you" 129 occurs,
the choice of the Holy One, blessed be He, in Israel
("He will choose 130 for us our inheritance") 131.
But one must still understand the connection with the specific details in this Zohar specifically,
i.e., a matter and connection with Rosh Hashanah that is derived specifically from this Zohar.
And also –
The lesson from this in the service of man.
And as will be explained below.
This Shabbat we study
(in Pirkei Avot)
two chapters 132 –
Chapter Five and Six
(in order to finish before Rosh Hashanah).
Incidentally, there is an inquiry here
(as discussed previously 133)
regarding the recitation of "All Israel etc." before the chapter and "Rabbi Chananya ben Akashya says etc." at the conclusion of the chapter –
Whether one should say this twice,
before and after each chapter,
or one says it only once,
before both chapters and after both chapters.
There is a rationale that two chapters on one Shabbat are considered like one chapter –
similar to two Torah portions on one Shabbat
[like Nitzavim and Vayelech on this Shabbat].
Which are considered like one portion
(as above, section 10).
Consequently, one should say "All Israel etc." and "Rabbi Chananya etc." only once,
at the beginning and end of both chapters.
But even if one says so regarding Chapter One and Two and Chapter Three and Four –
One seemingly cannot say so regarding Chapter Five and Six,
because Chapter Five is Mishnayot and Chapter Six is Beraitot,
One seemingly cannot make one entity from a chapter of Mishnayot and a chapter of Beraitot
(even though the Beraita "the Sages taught in the language of the Mishnah").
Regarding our subject –
One must understand the connection of these two chapters to Rosh Hashanah –
Since these two chapters are always studied on the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah.
The connection in general is seen simply –
Both at the beginning and at the end of these two chapters:
Chapter Five begins "With ten utterances the world was created". And this is indeed the content of Rosh Hashanah –
"This day is the beginning of Your works, a remembrance of the first day" 134,
The conclusion and completion of the creation of the world with ten utterances.
And in particular then "He looked into the Torah and created the world"135 –
the Above had previously "looked into" the Mishnah and saw that it states "With ten utterances the world was created,"
He actually created the world with ten utterances.
[For according to this one can resolve a puzzling thing in the Mishnah:
What does the Mishnah come to teach "What does the verse come to teach etc." that the world was created with ten utterances "and behold with one utterance it could have been created" –
seemingly what happened happened136 and now there is no practical difference,
because in actuality the world was created with ten utterances and not with one utterance? The explanation of this is:
That this is a practical difference regarding the Above who looked into the Mishnah before He created the world,
consequently He could, so to speak, have created the world with one utterance,
but at the time He saw, so to speak, that it states in the Mishnah "with ten utterances the world was created,"
He created it with ten utterances].
The conclusion of the sixth chapter is –
"Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created only for His glory etc." When was actually "Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world" –
not on the first day of Maaseh Bereishis
(the twenty-fifth of Elul137),
because then not all creations existed yet,
rather on Rosh Hashanah,
at the creation of man
(on the sixth day,
and then itself after several hours of the day138)
which came after the creation of all the rest of the creations.
And as will be explained further on regarding points and details in this.
The daily study portion in the Rambam is in the laws of the Red Heifer
(chapters 5-6-7).
One must also understand its connection to Rosh Hashanah.
The connection to the general concept of the Red Heifer:
The Red Heifer purified from impurity of the dead,
the opposite of life. And the explanation of this:
The concept of impurity of the dead according to the inner dimension of concepts –
is the concept,
that through one having touched a matter of the opposite of life,
it affects one and causes in him a weakening of vitality, G-d forbid.
And the Red Heifer,
which purifies from impurity of the dead,
brings about the drawing down of vitality anew back to the one impure from the dead.
Which is in the manner of the general concept of Rosh Hashanah –
the drawing down of vitality anew in the entire creation,
as above.
One must still understand, however, the connection of Rosh Hashanah with today's specific chapters in the laws of the Red Heifer. And as will be explained further on.
The general concept of drawing down vitality through the service of man –
is brought about through the concept of wine,
which is "that gladdens God and men"139,
for joy is the concept of drawing down vitality anew.
Which is also connected to the concept of Yom Tov,
"Festivals for joy,"
including Rosh Hashanah
(although Rosh Hashanah is among the Days of Awe,
when joy is concealed in the manner of "rejoice with trembling"<sup>140</sup>);
ווען שמחה שטייט מכוסה באופן פון "וגילו ברעדה" 140);
and then one makes Kiddush on wine.
And from Yom Tov it must be drawn forth upon all the days of the year,
as understood from what is explained in Likkutei Torah141 that from each festival it is drawn forth upon the entire year. And in particular from the festivals in the month of Tishrei,
which are general festivals from which it is drawn forth upon the entire year:
from Rosh Hashanah acceptance of the yoke is drawn forth upon the entire year,
and so on regarding the other festivals in the month of Tishrei142.
Therefore Shabbat in particular has a connection to the concept of wine and joy –
being the last Shabbat that comes before Rosh Hashanah and the month of Tishrei. And especially when one connects it with a farbrengen,
where there is also the concept of "great is drinking which brings close"143,
in addition to that the very concept of a farbrengen unifies,
as is known the "note that came down from heaven" regarding the great elevation of a farbrengen144. And especially on Shabbat Parshas Atem Nitzavim Hayom Kulchem Lifnei Hashem Elokeichem,
the unity of all Israel,
from "your heads, your tribes" until "your wood cutters" and "your water drawers".
Therefore this is the place,
that all those who have contributed bottles of beverage for various gatherings –
should now go up and announce regarding the gatherings,
and afterwards say "L'chaim" themselves,
and distribute a portion of the beverage to at least some of those assembled here,
and the remaining beverage –
each one in his place.
May it be His will that the increase in love of Israel and unity of Israel should further hasten the fulfillment of the prophecy "a great congregation shall return here"145,
"with our youths and our elders etc., with our sons and our daughters"146,
the perfection of the people,
together with the perfection of the Torah,
"until their completion",
together with the perfection of the Land,
until in a manner of "Hashem your God will expand your border"147.
And speedily in our days, literally.
[The Rebbe shlita gave a jug of beverage to:

Afterwards the Rebbe shlita began to sing "And I will empty out for you a blessing"].
The explanation in Rashi:
It was spoken many times,
that when a five-year-old begins to learn a subject, he goes through it until the end of the subject until he asks a question.
So too in our matter:
After the five-year-old for Scripture learns the continuation of the subject regarding the mitzvah of Hakhel,
the aforementioned question falls away — why the Torah is so lengthy in details regarding the time of the mitzvah:
Together with the announcements regarding the mitzvah of Hakhel, the Torah also gives a reason for the mitzvah:
"Assemble the people, the men, the women, and the infants, and your stranger who is within your gates
(and the reason for this is)
so that they will hear and so that they will learn and fear Hashem your God and observe to do all the words of this Torah",
until that also "their children who do not know will hear and learn to fear Hashem your God all the days that you live on the land etc.".
And based on this, the five-year-old for Scripture already understands why the Torah is so lengthy in details regarding the time of the mitzvah –
because thereby the Torah gives
(not signs of when the time is, but)
a reason and explanation for the fulfillment of the mitzvah of Hakhel specifically at this time,
and especially since the five-year-old has already learned in Parshat Devarim that the words of Moshe in the book of Mishneh Torah to the Jewish people
(including regarding the mitzvah of Hakhel)
were close to his death148,
and he perhaps also knows that this is in the month of Adar –
not "at the end of seven years etc.",
this further emphasizes that the mitzvah of Hakhel is specifically at this time]:
The five-year-old understands that when a new year and a new period begins –
then is the best time for the reading of the Torah in the mitzvah of Hakhel "so that they will hear and so that they will learn and fear etc.",
and then it is more accepted.
As he sees in himself:
When a new year begins for him,
with a new teacher,
and a new order –
then is the time when he is aroused to conduct himself in a certain manner,
and specifically then it is accepted;
און דוקא דעמולט ווערט עס נתקבל;
in contrast, in the middle of the time –
it is not with the same force.
Based on this he understands,
why the Torah says here "at the end of seven years" –
because thereby the Torah gives the reason and explanation for the mitzvah of Hakhel at this time –
because this is "at the end of seven years",
and one is at the beginning of a year and a new period,
now is the time to read the Torah in the ears of all Israel "so that they will hear and so that they will learn and fear etc.".
And it is "at the end of seven years":
Not only a new year,
but a beginning of a new period of seven years,
which includes all types in the year,
both "six years you shall sow your field etc."149 and the year of Shemittah.
Then it adds –
"at the appointed time of the year of Shemittah". And this further explains the reason for the mitzvah:
After the Jewish people have rested a full year from work in the field and vineyard –
it is understandable that then it is more conducive to gather them together
(Hakhel)
and read before them the Torah "so that they will hear and so that they will learn and fear etc.",
because they are in a state of rest without extraneous distractions
(as Rashi explains that at the time of the mitzvah of Hakhel (at the beginning of the eighth year) "the seventh year still applies in it etc.").
In contrast, in other years,
the Jewish people have the toils of labor and work in the field etc.
And based on this, it is understood why Rashi writes both things:
"In the first year of the Shemittah
(and)
(און)
that it is the eighth year" –
because this emphasizes both matters mentioned above:
This is "in the first year of the Shemittah," the beginning of a new period of Shemittah
(seven years),
and this is "the eighth year,"
a year that comes immediately after a Shemittah year,
when Jews are rested and more capable of receiving.
Then the verse adds –
"on the Festival of Sukkot",
because in "at the end of seven years, at the time of the Shemittah year" itself, the Festival of Sukkot is an even more auspicious time for speaking with Jews,
for it is a festival,
and at that time there is the matter of the pilgrimage –
as the verse continues –
"when all of Israel comes to appear before Hashem your G-d",
consequently, Jews are then more prepared for "so that they may hear and so that they may learn, etc." –
both because of the time,
"on the Festival of Sukkot",
and because of the place –
"in the place that He will choose".

The connection of the note on the Zohar with Rosh HaShanah –
will be understood based on the continuation of the words of the Zohar
(which was not copied in Likkutei Levi Yitzchak,
because the father did not explain it in his note):
After the Zohar says that "fortunate are Israel that the Holy One, blessed be He, desired them, and because He desired them, He called them sons, firstborn, holy ones, brothers",
the Zohar continues:
"He descended to dwell with them, as it is said150 'And they shall make Me a Sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst',
and He sought to establish them corresponding to the supernal pattern, and He caused to rest upon them seven clouds of glory,
the Shechinah went before them, as it is said151 'And Hashem went before them by day'".
And one can say the connection of the matters:
Because the Holy One, blessed be He, "desired them",
the aspect of will
(Keter)
in Israel –
it is then drawn down into the order of the chain of descent –
"He called them sons, firstborn, holy ones, brothers",
the aspect of Chochmah, Binah, and Daat
(as above in section 24),
then it is drawn down from the intellects into the seven emotional attributes
("seven clouds of glory")152,
until Malchut
(Shechinah).
And this is the content of Rosh HaShanah –
as explained in the Siddur, Shaar HaTekiot153,
that we arouse the delight and will154 for kingship155
("He desired them"),
"Make Me king over you",
and because of this
("because He desired them")
the entire order of the chain of descent is then built –
intellects
(Chabad)
and emotional attributes
(Zeir Anpin),
(ז"א),
until it descends into Malchut
(Shechinah),
the building of the world of speech,
until actual action,
the building of the Mishkan
(where there is the indwelling of the Shechinah) –
the renewal of the world anew.
The lesson from this in the service of man:
It is explained in many places156 that from the will for kingship that is aroused on Rosh HaShanah, the will for mitzvot is drawn,
for the essence of the mitzvot is the supernal will,
"Who sanctified us with His mitzvot and commanded us",
and this supernal will affects
("because He desired them")
that afterwards the mitzvah should descend into details in the order of the chain of descent,
the building of the ten Sefirot,
intellects and emotional attributes,
until Malchut157,
and every single detail affects the supernal will,
as explained in many places158.
Thus we have the lesson:
When a Jew fulfills a particular mitzvah with a physical object from this physical world –
he must know that this
(is not merely related to a particular level, etc.,
but this is)
related to and derives from the supernal will and delight –
"Who sanctified us with His mitzvot and commanded us" –
the general intention of every mitzvah.
And from the supernal will it is then drawn into the entire order of the chain of descent,
intellects and emotional attributes,
which in service is –
the intentions of the mitzvot,
the particular intention of each mitzvah,
until it descends into the fulfillment of this mitzvah in actual action in the physicality of the world. So that every single detail of the mitzvah
(also as it is in the order of the chain of descent,
particular intentions, etc.)
is related to and derives from the supernal will. From this it is understood
(as explained in many places159),
that also the particular intention in each mitzvah
(not only the general intention)
is related not only to the supernal Sefirot,
but this is related to the supernal will itself,
for if one changes even a detail in the mitzvah,
this is not merely a change in that detail,
but this can change the mitzvah into a transgression,
which is
(not merely not the supernal will, but)
the opposite of the supernal will,
and this affects the Essence and Being, as it were160.
The matter in Pirkei Avot:
One needs an explanation of the language of the Mishnah "With ten utterances the world was created"
[which is taken from the language of the Written Torah "And God said"] –
why does it specifically state the term utterance
("utterances")
and not speech
("speeches"),
on the contrary:
regarding the creation of the world it would be more fitting to use the term speech,
because the content and function of the creation of the world is –
that from thought it descended into speech161,
and the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He is considered an action162,
the creation of this physical world.
Furthermore:
utterance is a soft language,
and speech is a harsh language163
[as Rashi explains164 the difference between "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob",
"in a soft language",
and "and declare to the children of Israel",
"words as harsh as sinews").
Therefore, according to this, it would have been more fitting to use the term speech regarding the creation of the world rather than the term utterance –
because the creation of the world was through the name Elokim
("In the beginning God created"),
the attribute of contraction and might,
which is the concept of speech –
a harsh language,
from the aspect of might,
unlike utterance which is a soft language.
And one can say the explanation of this:
Our Sages, of blessed memory, say165 that "At first it arose in thought to create the world with the attribute of justice, and He saw that the world would not endure, so He partnered with it the attribute of mercy."
The explanation of this is –
that the "He saw that the world would not endure" was before creation
(at the time when it was still "it arose in thought"),
because regarding the Most High, past, present and future are all the same,
therefore He saw immediately
(before creation)
that "the world would not endure"
(as the Maggid explains166 the difference between a human father and our Father in heaven,
that regarding a human "one who never had a son cannot say that the form of the son he will have later was engraved in his thought, because he has not yet seen him nor recognized his form...
but regarding the Holy One, blessed be He, their form was engraved in thought...
because for Him, blessed be He, past and future are one").
That is, the entire concept of "it arose in thought to create the world with the attribute of justice and He saw that the world would not endure, so He partnered with it the attribute of mercy" was all before creation;
ד.ה. אז דער גאנצער ענין פון "עלה במחשבה לברוא את העולם במדת הדין וראה שאין העולם מתקיים שיתף עמו מדה"ר" איז אלץ געווען קודם הבריאה;
and the actual creation was
(not through the attribute of justice alone, but)
through the attribute of justice in partnership with the attribute of mercy. Therefore it is stated167 "on the day that Hashem Elokim made earth and heaven"
(not the name Elokim alone),
because the actual creation
("on the day that... made")
was through the name Elokim
(the attribute of justice)
together with the name Havayah
(the attribute of mercy).
Based on this, it is understandable why the creation was through "And God said",
"with ten utterances" in a soft language –
He partnered with it the attribute of mercy
(and not "And He spoke",
"speeches" in a harsh language,
might and justice alone).
From this there is also a lesson regarding Rosh Hashanah –
the conclusion and completion of creation through the ten utterances:
Rosh Hashanah is the Day of Judgment. But for a Jew, this is in the manner of "He partnered with it the attribute of mercy" –
in a soft language:
It is indeed a Day of Judgment,
but a Jew is not afraid of it;
אבער א איד שרעקט זיך ניט דערפון;
regarding angels it is "angels hasten and trembling and fear seize them"169,
but for a Jew this is not connected with fear,
but with joy,
because he is certain that they will be vindicated in judgment,
as it states in the Tur even regarding Erev Rosh Hashanah,
"What nation is like this nation that knows the nature of its God... they wear white and wrap themselves in white... because they know that the Holy One, blessed be He will perform a miracle for them",
because they know that they will be vindicated in judgment!
A Jew indeed does teshuvah at that time –
but this is teshuvah out of love,
because he knows that the inner intention of the judgment is love,
the attribute of mercy.
Tears indeed flow from him –
but with tears of joy,
because of the fact that "his soul is complete"
(as it states in the writings of the AriZal170 that "anyone who does not weep... his soul is not complete"),
therefore they are tears of joy.
As it states regarding Rabbi Akiva171,
that his eyes flowed with tears because of the great joy he had when hearing the secrets of the Torah in Song of Songs.
Just as it was with Rabbi Akiva,
afterwards the secrets of the Torah that are in Song of Songs were revealed in the Zohar and Tikkunei Zohar in the explanation of the verses in Song of Songs,
until this was explained and publicized in Chassidus,
including also the inner explanation of the verses in Song of Songs "I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine"
(acronym Elul)
and "My Beloved is mine and I am His"172 –
regarding the greatness of the love of the Most High for Jews,
"For Israel is a youth and I love him"173.
It is certainly a sure thing that hearing this,
it evokes only tears of great joy.
And Jews are not afraid to go to Rosh Hashanah,
but on the contrary, they go with joy and a good heart,
and they celebrate a joyous Yom Tov,
knowing that they will be vindicated in judgment and will certainly receive a good writing and sealing,
written and sealed –
not only "written" but also "sealed" –
immediately in the book of the completely righteous –
and all your people are righteous174.
And one receives all the blessings,
which all begin with a letter of the Alef-Beis175. Therefore,
when one mentions one way that the blessings are arranged in the letters of the Alef-Beis,
this is
[not in order to show a trick that one knows the Alef-Beis by heart,
but rather this is)
in itself inclusive of all the blessings176:
May it be a year of light,
a year of blessing,
a year of joy and a year of redemption,
a year of delight,
a year of splendor and glory,
a year of good assembly,
a year of great merits,
a year of good and long life,
a year of goodness,
a year of good destiny,
a year of sustenance,
a year of study,
a year of heights and a year of commandments,
a year of great miracles,
a year of heavenly assistance,
a year of strength and glory,
a year of redemption,
a year of rejoicing and a year of charity,
a year of uprightness,
a year of exaltation,
a year of joy and gladness,
a year of Torah and a year of praise and a year of celebration,
And the main point –
a year of the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,
speedily in our actual days.

as it is said177 Hashem will reign forever and ever."
The commentators explain178 the proof from the verse –
because "Hashem will reign forever and ever" refers to the future,
(as Rashi explains179),
when there will be the perfection of the revelation of the kingship of the Holy One, blessed be He, in the world
("Hashem will reign forever and ever"),
one will see openly that "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created only for His glory."
And this is the connection with "With ten utterances the world was created"
(at the beginning of chapter five):
The purpose of creation through the ten utterances –
will be in the future at the time when there will be "Hashem will reign forever and ever",
because then there will be the perfection of the revelation of the ten utterances of the Holy One, blessed be He,
(with which the world was created)
in the world,
i.e., seeing openly in every created being the utterance of Hashem that brings it into being and gives it life –
"Hashem will reign forever and ever",
as "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created only for His glory."
The concept in this lesson of the Rambam in the laws of the Red Heifer
[and the general connection with Rosh Hashanah –
is because of the fact that the subject of both is to draw down vitality anew,
as above]:
At the beginning of today's lesson
(chapter five)
the Rambam writes:
"All those engaged in the [preparation of the] heifer from beginning to end defile their garments during the entire time of their work, etc."
One must understand some explanation in this contradiction in the Red Heifer –
that it defiles the pure and purifies the impure?!
And even though the commandment of the Red Heifer is a statute beyond intellect,
"A statute I have enacted and a decree I have decreed, and you have no permission to speculate about it",
because the nations of the world taunt Israel about this commandment,
including about this detail that it defiles the pure and purifies the impure
(as brought in the Midrash180) –
nevertheless the Rambam writes181,
that "even though all the statutes of the Torah are decrees...
it is proper to contemplate them, and whatever you can give a reason for, give a reason,
for the early sages said182 that King Solomon understood most of the reasons for all the statutes of the Torah."
One must endeavor to find some explanation in this wondrous thing that the Red Heifer defiles the pure and purifies the impure. And as follows.
In the second chapter of today's lesson
(chapter six)
(פ"ו)
the Rambam writes183 the laws concerning the water of purification,
"and he shall put upon it living water into a vessel"184:
"The water that they put the ashes of the heifer into, they only fill it in a vessel,
and from springs or from flowing rivers,
as it is said, 'and he shall put upon it living water into a vessel.'"
And in the continuation of the chapter he writes about the things fit for a vessel:
"With all vessels they fill, sprinkle, and sanctify, etc.,
but they do not fill, sanctify, nor sprinkle, etc., nor from a hollow in a rock, etc."185.
I.e., specifically a detached vessel,
but not a vessel that is attached to the ground by heaven,
by heaven from the six days of creation*185,
and the strongest creation –
a rock.
Afterwards, the Rambam writes the laws regarding which waters are fit for the waters of purification:
It must specifically be “living waters”
(as explained there in detail).
But waters that fail are invalid,
“and those that fail are springs that sometimes flow and sometimes dry up and become dry,
even if they were dry once in seven years they are invalid,
but if they were dry in a year of drought or for many years more than seven…
these are fit”186.
That is, it is not enough that there be living and flowing spring waters,
rather there must be a spring that endures for more than seven years,
for only then is it called “living waters”.
And from the three matters in today’s lesson of the Rambam
[making the pure impure etc.,
a vessel made by man,
living waters for more than seven years] –
one can derive a lesson in the service of Hashem,
and in connection with Rosh Hashanah
(drawing down vitality anew,
like the matter of the red heifer).
And the explanation:
The general concept of the red heifer is
(as above) –
to draw down vitality anew to one impure from a corpse, in whom there has been a weakening of vitality, may the Merciful One protect us.
And in the service [of Hashem]:
When a person experiences a weakening in his attachment to “Hashem your G-d”,
he experiences a weakening in vitality,
for the life of a Jew comes through his attachment to Hashem your G-d,
as it is written187 “And you who cling to Hashem your G-d are all alive etc.” And for this the advice is –
the commandment of the red heifer,
“and he shall put upon it living waters into a vessel”,
which draws down and restores vitality anew by strengthening again the attachment to Hashem your G-d through service in Torah and mitzvos.
And in this itself there are several details. And among them –
the aforementioned laws in today’s lesson of the Rambam:
For this one must have “living waters” which are not waters that fail, even not once in seven years,
rather they must endure for more than seven years. And in the service [of Hashem]:
The “And you who cling to Hashem your G-d are all alive” must be not only in a particular state and afterwards there is a change and weakening in it, may the Merciful One protect us,
rather this must be in all situations and circumstances,
which are represented in the period of seven years,
which includes all situations and circumstances of a Jew:
Both when he performs the service of “six years you shall sow your field etc.”,
the service in the world,
and when he performs the service of the seventh year,
“a Sabbath to Hashem”188 –
there must be with him “living waters”,
the attachment to Hashem your G-d, the living [G-d],
without any change.
On the other hand, however, the meaning is not that after seven years he remains in the same situation and circumstance without any change,
rather there must be “ascending in holiness”,
in holiness itself. Until an ascent that is beyond measure,
for which it is required that there be “waters that are dry” in the interim,
because the lower level in holiness disturbs the ascent to a level incomparably higher.
Like the explanation189 regarding Rabbi Zeira190 who fasted one hundred fasts in order to forget the Babylonian Talmud and that it should not disturb him from the study of the Jerusalem Talmud,
which is a new order in the study of Torah. And as discussed many times the explanation of this:
One cannot say that Rabbi Zeira forgot everything that he had learned,
for “whoever forgets one thing of his study, Scripture considers it as if he is liable for his life”191,
so how can one say that Rabbi Zeira fasted in order to forget Torah, may the Merciful One protect us?!
Rather the explanation of this is –
that he fasted in order to forget the manner and method of study of the Babylonian Talmud,
pilpul and give-and-take etc.,
but not the laws therein,
for the method of study of the Babylonian [Talmud]
(in the manner of pilpul etc.)
disturbs the method of study of the Jerusalem Talmud
(direct light).
And accordingly it is understood on the other hand –
that when he studied the Babylonian Talmud,
he could not study the method of study of the Jerusalem Talmud,
for that would have disturbed him.
That is,
that each manner of service has its specific quality,
its specific matters and conditions,
and when one is at that level,
other manners of service cannot disturb it.
And accordingly in our matter:
It is certain that the service of Hashem in Torah and mitzvos and attachment to the living G-d must be constant
(“living waters”);
("מים חיים");
but in this itself there are distinctions in what constitutes his particular service,
and then he must “forget”
(“waters that are dry”)
the other manners of service so that they should not disturb the current service.
And the “living waters” must be “into a vessel”,
and specifically a vessel made by man,
not made by Heaven. And the matter in the service [of Hashem]:
The service of man in Torah and commandments is specifically through a soul in a body,
a light in a vessel. And the fulfillment of the commandments themselves
(soul in a body)
must be through the body,
a detached vessel,
not by the hands of heaven like a "trough in a rock"
(through the soul),
as is known that commandments are specifically in physical matters,
and in order to fulfill them one must have that the man should fulfill them with his body
(detached vessel).
As this is regarding the commandment of shofar blowing
(which brings about the drawing down of new vitality on Rosh Hashanah):
A soul above cannot blow a shofar. For this one must specifically have a soul in a body,
and that the power of the body
(in the power of the soul)
should blow the shofar. Until the blast must be until the face of the blower becomes reddened,
which is not achieved through the intention of the soul alone
(this will not cause the face of the blower to become reddened),
rather the intention of the soul acts within the body,
so that the flow of blood should strengthen and run to the face,
until the face of the blower becomes reddened. And specifically through this "vessel" one brings about the drawing down of new vitality on Rosh Hashanah.
The explanation in this that the red heifer defiles the pure and purifies the impure –
is connected with a lengthy explanation in Chassidus,
and a story with the Mitteler Rebbe,
that when one wishes to rectify another, one must find a trace of this
(in the most minute degree)
in oneself. And in the language of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe –
that Mordechai was able to save the Jews because he had "that which befell him",
he felt that what happens to Jews affects him personally.
For if he has absolutely no connection to it
(at least a trace of this),
he cannot help rectify another in this matter,
for he has no idea what it is;
ווארום ער האט קיין אנונג ניט וואס דאס איז;
in order to be able to rectify the other,
he must have at least a trace of this in himself;
דארף ער האבן עכ"פ מעין זה בא זיך אליין;
indeed only a trace of this –
for if the entire matter is that a prisoner cannot free himself,
then he cannot rectify the other,
but a trace of this he must have,
and the main point –
that he must have the feeling that this is relevant to him and affects him
("that which befell him").
Based on this, the explanation is also understood in that "all who engage in the [red] heifer from beginning to end defile garments, etc." –
because in order to be able to purify the other,
one must have a trace of this impurity,
at least an impurity of that day,
in oneself –
"that which befell him".
As an example of this, it is also said regarding the Most High
(as it were) –
that "in all their affliction, He is afflicted":
When Jews are in exile, this is indeed "their affliction",
their trouble,
not a trouble for the Most High, heaven forbid,
for the Most High, blessed be He, has no connection with affliction
("not [with an aleph] afflicted");
("לא (מיט אן אל"ף) צר" 199);
but together with this it is said "in all their affliction, He is afflicted",
the Most High wishes to empathize and share the trouble of the Jews in exile,
He places Himself, as it were, into that situation and state!
From this it is understood,
that the redemption must come immediately. For it is not possible that the Most High should wish to remain in exile
("He is afflicted")!
And the only reason why the redemption has not yet come –
because since there are still holy sparks that are found very deep,
one must still elevate them very high
(for the highest of the high descends to the lowest of the low),
and then the redemption comes immediately.
And simply:
When a Jew drinks a bit of water –
and does not even make an after blessing,
for he drinks less than the measure,
he does not need to make the blessing –
but he makes upon it the blessing "that all came into being through His word",
and through this he elevates the holy spark that is in the water,
and reveals how it is "that came into being through His word" –
he has the power to tip himself and the entire world to the side of merit and cause for himself and them salvation and deliverance,
until the true salvation and deliverance –
the true and complete redemption,
through our righteous Mashiach.
Before concluding this gathering,
and one prepares for the next gathering –
we wish to mention again about the service and campaigns connected with the month of Elul in general,
and especially –
with the last Shabbat in the month of Elul and the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah,
with all the special matters connected with this time,
as discussed above.
And especially –
regarding the matter of charity.
And a good thought the Holy One, blessed be He, joins to action,
and Chassidus explains,
that when one has a good thought, the Most High provides the ability to bring it down into a deed in actuality,
so that it becomes one complete entity –
a thought and a deed,
soul and body,
the intention of the commandment and the fulfillment of the commandment in actuality.
From this it is understood,
that even if one has a good thought to do something beyond his capacity at the time of the resolution,
to give more charity than he possesses,
more than a tithe or a fifth or even more than wasting more than a fifth,
that also regarding wasting one must have something to waste –
the Holy One, blessed be He, joins it to action,
and gives him the ability to fulfill his thought and resolution,
even though at the time of the resolution he did not have the ability.
And the reason for this is –
because Jews are in the aspect of "A youth Israel and I love him" towards the Most High,
consequently the Most High draws down to them an unlimited love,
and this gives them strength to do their service in the manner of "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart
(with both your inclinations)
and with all your soul",
until "with all your might",
with both interpretations of this –
might,
self-sacrifice,
and "with all your wealth",
giving money to charity in the manner of "might".
Until there is the true revelation of the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for the youth Israel –
through that which He brings the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah,
When it will be "Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth",
because a Jew becomes master over heaven and earth,
and consequently he has the power to accomplish all matters,
until bringing the redemption,
And then it will be "And this is the blessing with which Moses blessed",
because "Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust" and Moses and Aaron with them,
Moses will then again bless the Jews
(since the Torah is eternal)
and in a renewed manner,
both with the blessing for each tribe individually,
and the blessing for the entire people of Israel together,
Until –
that it will then also be "all the signs and wonders which Moses did before the eyes of all Israel",
Beginning from the miracle –
that the true and complete redemption comes,
and even before Rosh Hashanah one dances to greet our righteous Messiah,
and in actual revelation.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
