א.א
To everyone, first of all, this is Shabbat Parshat Ki Tavo. And it is known the Torah of the old Rebbe, that one must live with the time,
with the weekly Parsha.
That together with the Torah and instruction, a grant of power is given,
just as with every statement in Torah,
together with it, the powers to carry it out are given,
as the principle regarding the Holy One, blessed be He, that "I do not request except according to their power",
and likewise, the instructions from tzaddikim come
(because "tzaddikim are similar to their Creator").
And all the more so when it speaks about the instruction of the Alter Rebbe, mentioned above
(to live with the time)
one must surely have for this a special grant of power,
because the matter of living with the time,
with the weekly Parsha, is a difficult service
[to which one does not pay attention. One learns the instruction of the old Rebbe simply, without paying attention that this is a great novelty),
because it concerns a matter that is a distance beyond comparison:
living with the weekly Parsha simply means,
that the life of a soul in a body in daily life should be permeated openly with the weekly Parsha,
which is evident openly in his thought, in his speech, and in his actions. And not only on the day of Shabbat,
rather one must live with the time throughout all the days of the week,
the weekdays,
where "each and every day does its work",
the life on each and every day must be with the weekly Parsha!
Which is a great novelty:
That the Torah is "our life" can be in a general way or in concealment. And by way of example, as this is regarding the life of the soul in the body in general:
Although the vitality of the body comes from the soul,
the soul is not seen in a prominent and revealed manner. Until there can be those who learn it upside down;
זעט מען ניט אן די נשמה באופן בולט וגלוי. ביז אז עס קענען זיי אזוינע וואס לערנען קאפויער;
the Alter Rebbe reveals a great novelty that the "our life" of Torah
(does not remain in a general way and in concealment,
rather it)
must come out openly and in detail in the daily life of a soul in a body. According to the simple interpretation in his teaching about living with the time,
that a Jew must live openly,
in daily life,
a soul in a body,
with the weekly Parsha,
in a manner that is evident openly in his thought,
his speech, and his actions.
And based on this, it is understandable why Chassidim went to ask the Mitteler Rebbe the explanation of the words of the Alter Rebbe that "one must live with the time". And one needed to arrive at the explanation and elucidation of the Mitteler Rebbe
[who was a guide of Chassidim even during the lifetime of the Alter Rebbe)
that this means living with the weekly Parsha, because since this is a great novelty
(regarding that which Torah in general is "our life"),
therefore there was the question, and one needed to have upon this the explanation in detail from the Mitteler Rebbe.
From all of which it is understood why one must have for this a grant of power,
because it is a difficult service.
The matter becomes even sharper according to the understanding that the Torah and instruction of the Alter Rebbe
(to live with the weekly Parsha)
is, after all, not only for select individuals who know the explanation of the wisdom of truth in the weekly Parsha,
or the explanation according to the homiletic, the allegorical, and the like,
rather for all Jews,
also for one who understands only the simple explanation
(the simple meaning of the Scriptural verse)
of the weekly Parsha,
and within this itself, the simplest of the simple,
as it is understood that in the simple meaning of the Scriptural verse itself there are levels
[for example, the difference between the first time one learns a verse with Rashi (whose subject is the simple meaning of the Scriptural verse) and the second time one learns the same Rashi,
then certainly there comes then,
more understanding and comprehension, etc.].
This obligates even more that in order to fulfill this Torah and instruction, one must have a special grant of power.
And because "tzaddikim are similar to their Creator",
just as the Almighty says "I do not request except according to their power",
so too regarding tzaddikim,
that together with their instructions they also give upon them a grant of power.
And as discussed many times,
that "I do not request except according to their power" is not a matter of "a decree I have decreed",
rather this is a principle understood by simple intellect even regarding human beings
(all the more so regarding the Holy One, blessed be He):
A person
(even a non-Jew)
who is only worthy of the name "person" will not demand from someone else more than that one possesses; that is a wildness that is only a matter of confusion!
From this it is understood that when the Torah demands something from a Jew
(like the Torah of the Alter Rebbe),
the Torah certainly gives him the powers to carry it out,
because if not, the Torah would not have demanded it.
And it is understood,
that this
("I do not ask [anything] except according to their power")
means powers for each and every one according to his measure. As is known from what the elder Chassidim relate,
that R. Zusia of Anipoli said,
that in the World to Come he is not afraid that they will demand from him why he was not like another great person or like so-and-so son of so-and-so,
rather he is afraid that they will ask him why he was not like Zusia of Anipoli! And since this story has reached others, it is understood that this is a directive regarding each and every one,
that from each one they demand according to his powers,
according to his measure.
And regarding our matter:
Together with the Torah and directive of the Alter Rebbe that one must live with the times,
and in this time with Parshat Ki Tavo,
every Jew receives an empowerment for this,
each one according to his measure to live with Parshat Ki Tavo,
in his daily life,
in his thoughts, speech, and actions.

In Parshat Ki Tavo
(as in all matters of the world,
and certainly matters of Torah)
there are many matters;
זיינען פאראן א ריבוי ענינים;
but within this itself there are general matters and matters that are more revealed,
and this itself is by Divine Providence,
that these matters are more relevant,
and one must
(first and foremost)
in them
(in the revealed matters)
contemplate in detail,
in order to derive from this a directive with which one must live.
The most revealed matter in Parshat Ki Tavo is the name of the Parsha
(according to the custom of Israel)
"Ki Tavo".
And as is known the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
and likewise the teaching of the Maggid
(on the verse "A living soul is his name"),
and likewise brought down from the Alter Rebbe that from this Shabbat the 18th of Elul is blessed,
the birthday of the "two great luminaries",
the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe,
and it is understood that this also has a connection with the Nasi between them
(the Maggid)]
that the name by which he is called in the Holy Tongue enlivens and brings into being and sustains the thing called by this name and brings out its content.
The simple explanation of "Ki Tavo" is when you will enter "into the land",
you must fulfill there such and such
(as the continuation of the Parsha).
Daled.
ד
No conditions are stated here and no bargaining takes place,
it is merely a simple announcement that it is a certain thing that there will be "Ki Tavo",
however one must know that when it will be "Ki Tavo",
one should fulfill there the matters enumerated in the verses.
That is,
that "Ki Tavo" is not a language of command
(you shall enter the Land of Israel),
and also not a language of promise
(you will enter the Land of Israel),
and also not a language of prophecy but a simple and certain announcement,
that it is a simple and certain thing that one will enter the Land of Israel,
only along with this it is stated,
that when one will enter, one should fulfill such and such.
The promise of entry into the land and the prophecy about this were already had from before,
as explained at length
(in quantity and quality)
in many scriptures in the Torah prior to this the promise of entry into the land. And also ownership of the land was already had from before, some say even in the time of Avraham Avinu,
and certainly after the Exodus from Egypt,
and certainly after the Giving of the Torah,
and certainly after it was already "And you who cling to the L-rd your G-d are all alive today",
"all of them complete and standing to enter the land etc.",
and certainly after the covenant in the plains of Moav they were already assured that they would enter and have ownership in the Land of Israel;
ועאכו"כ לאחרי הכריתת ברית בערבות מואב איז מען שוין מובטח אז מ'וועט אריינגיין און האבן בעלות בארץ ישראל;
This verse
("Ki Tavo")
does not speak about a promise and prophecy of entry into the land nor about ownership of the Land of Israel,
that was already had prior to this,
rather the simple explanation of the verse is a simple announcement:
(after one knows from before that one will enter the Land of Israel,
here the verse states a simple announcement, that)
when one will enter
("Ki Tavo el HaAretz")
one will need to fulfill certain matters.
According to this, however, the question arises:
Since the Torah does not come to announce or promise the entry into the land, why does the Torah already need to tell now what one will need to do when it will be "when you come into the land"?
For a child of five years of age studying Scripture, this is not a question at all, because he understands that before one needs to fulfill a commandment,
one speaks about
it
ה
beforehand so that one can prepare for it in order to then
(when the time of obligation arrives)
fulfill the matter properly. Like the general principle of education, that even before one comes to the obligation of the commandments, one educates a minor in the commandments,
so that he should prepare for them and will be able to fulfill the commandments when he becomes a person obligated [in the commandments].
But as mentioned,
in our matter, the education is not about the very concept of "when you come,"
for one already knows simply that one will certainly enter the Land of Israel;
דאס ווייסט מען שוין בפשטות אז מ'וועט זיכער אריינגיין אין ארץ ישראל;
the preparation and education is about the commandments that one will need to fulfill upon entering the Land of Israel.
For this is the content of "when you come,"
that it is a clear thing that one will enter the Land of Israel;
אז ס'איז א דבר הברור אז מ'וועט אריינגיין אין ארץ ישראל;
but together with this, one tells a Jew already before his coming to the land,
that "when you come into the land" he must fulfill certain commandments, because upon hearing that he is certainly about to enter the Land of Israel,
he prepares himself for it a moment
(or a time)
before the obligation,
so that he can then fulfill the commandments in completeness in the Land of Israel.
Based on this, one will understand the lesson of the portion of Tavo with which one must live
(according to the Torah of the Alter Rebbe mentioned above)
in this week
(in all the days of the week),
and certainly when one stands on the Shabbat of the portion of Tavo, when one reads the entire portion and when all seven days of the week
(also the seventh day as a day in its own right)
ascend to their completeness in the manner of "and they were completed,"
And with the introduction that the Shabbat of the portion of Tavo
(in this year and in most years)
blesses the eighteenth of Elul
(and in all years it comes in proximity to the eighteenth of Elul or on the eighteenth of Elul itself).
The lesson of "when you come" must be connected with the eighteenth of Elul.
And the explanation:
The eighteenth of Elul is the birthday of the "two great luminaries,"
the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe.
That is, that then their mazal prevails.
The unique aspect of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe
(which stands in strengthening,
their mazal prevails,
on the eighteenth of Elul)
is the concept of "may your springs spread forth outward." And this is a preparation for the coming of Mashiach
and
ו
in the true and complete redemption, as is known, that Mashiach answered the Baal Shem Tov when he asked him "when will the Master come" [with] "when your springs spread forth outward,"
the springs of the Baal Shem Tov.
And afterwards the Alter Rebbe instituted that the springs of the Baal Shem Tov should be in a manner of "they will be sustained" from me.
And this is the connection with the concept of "when you come into the land," because with the coming of Mashiach in the true and complete redemption
(which comes through the spreading of the springs of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe)
there will be the "when you come into the land" in the ultimate perfection,
for then
(in the true and complete redemption)
there will be the perfection of the land.
Thus
ה
one has from this the aforementioned lesson of "when you come":
Even though the content of the portion is about the commandments that one must fulfill after coming to the land
(and not about the very concept of "when you come into the land,"
as above)
the portion is called specifically by the name "when you come," which emphasizes that the main content of the portion
(which is expressed in the name of the portion) is,
that it is a clear thing that there will be "when you come,"
but one tells it to a Jew so that he should do all that depends on him to educate himself and prepare himself for the situation in the Land of Israel.
And regarding our matter of "when you come into the land" in the future redemption
(through the spreading of the springs outward of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe):
After there has been
(within all of our deeds and service throughout the generations)
the spreading of the springs outward by the Baal Shem Tov and by the Alter Rebbe in the manner of "they will be sustained" from me,
until afterwards this reached the outermost outward through the Rebbe, my teacher and father-in-law, who commanded to translate the inner dimension of the Torah into the language of every nation,
in the manner of "explain it well in the holy tongue"
(as it is stated in our portion)
it is a certain thing that there will be "the Master has come," the King Mashiach, and consequently there will certainly be "when you come into the land"
(in the future redemption),
this
ז
And "Ki Tavo" in the ultimate perfection, a complete arrival,
And because it says "Tavo" in the Holy Tongue,
it expresses the true content of the matter. As is known, the name by which it is called in the Holy Tongue of every matter enlivens, constitutes, and sustains the matter
(as mentioned above),
because the Holy Tongue is the true language, and these are interdependent:
Being the true language, the Holy Tongue expresses the true content of every matter. It follows from this that when it says "Tavo" in the Holy Tongue,
it means a true arrival,
a complete arrival.
One tells the Jews a simple announcement,
that it is a certainty that "you will come to the land,"
in the true and complete redemption,
because everything has already been accomplished and everything is ready for the feast,
as discussed above that we already have the promise and ownership of the Land of Israel from before,
and now one simply announces "Ki Tavo El HaAretz,"
And as was said in today's Haftarah "BeItah Achishenah,"
that the redemption comes immediately in the manner of "Achishenah"
(as will be explained below);
(כדלקמן);
And along with this one tells the Jews,
"Ki Tavo El HaAretz,"
when you will come to the Land of Israel in the future redemption
(which is a clear matter,
as mentioned above),
you will need to fulfill the commandments "as the commandments of your will,"
the perfection of the commandments,
consequently one must utilize the last moments before this "Tavo" to prepare and educate oneself for it,
by increasing in the dissemination of the wellsprings outward
(which brings the coming of Moshiach).
But regarding the essence of "Ki Tavo" it is a clear matter that it will be:
In general it is said "See I have placed before you today the life and the good" and the opposite of this,
and for a Jew it must be "and you shall choose life";
און ביי א אידן דארף זיין "ובחרת בחיים" 32;
But regarding the matter of "Ki Tavo El HaAretz" in the future redemption, it was not given to human choice,
he has no choice in this,
it is a certainty that "you will come to the land" in the future redemption,
because not by our will did we go into exile and not by our will will we leave exile,
rather the Almighty will take us out from there, and who can say to Him what do You do;
נאר דער אויבערשטער וועט אונז פון דארטן ארויסנעמען 33 ומי יאמר לו מה תעשה 34;
Ch
ח
Because the intention is however that the service of man should be in a natural way,
therefore one gives a Jew a moment to prepare for this "Ki Tavo" future tense,
But "Tavo" future tense is even regarding a moment before this,
That is, immediately after the last moment of preparation and education, "you will come to the land" occurs. And as stated, regarding this there is no choice;
ד.ה. אז גלייך נאך דער רגע האחרון פון דער הכנה וחינוך ווערט "תבוא אל הארץ". וכאמור אויף דעם האט מען קיין בחירה ניט;
One has choice what to do after this "Tavo,"
But regarding the essence of the matter of "Tavo" the verse simply states a simple announcement:
"Ki Tavo El HaAretz"!
From this we have the dual instruction with which one must now live
(on Shabbat Parshat Tavo):
On one hand one must know that surely there will be "Tavo El HaAretz,"
the redemption.
And the superiority in "Ki Tavo El HaAretz" is further emphasized according to today's lesson of Rambam where it discusses the impurity of the lands of the nations, consequently one understands from this the advantage of light from darkness of "Ki Tavo El HaAretz"
(the Land of Israel),
as will be explained below
(section 28).
And as is understood from the laws in this lesson of Rambam as studied
(or will study)
by many of Israel in the daily Rambam lesson
(according to the division of three chapters per day).
And although there are Jews who do not study this at this time or study according to a different division, "all of Israel are guarantors for one another,"
and the explanation of the Rebbe my father-in-law on this is known,
that all Jews are
(guarantors from the term)
intermingled,
and in the manner of "areivim" from the term "areivut,"
sweetness].
And this is an instruction for all Jews
(who all must live with the Parsha),
from their smallest to their greatest. And on the contrary, for the great ones one must sometimes reach the instruction that the redemption surely comes,
because a great person can convince himself that it does not bother him that he is in exile. Or he is not close to his father's table,
he finds explanations and simple interpretations for this,
or another tells him simple interpretations for this,
and so forth.

And together with this, one must know that since we are informing Jews that we will certainly immediately go out of exile,
"When you come into the land,"
and in addition everything is already prepared,
we already have the promise and ownership of the Land of Israel from before,
(as above)
it only needs to be "stand ready, all of you,"
we only need to fasten the last buttons,
that is, to utilize the last moments of exile to increase in the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
(which brings the "my brother, Rabbi" here, King Messiah),
and in a manner of "they will be sustained from me,"
until in a manner of "explain it well in seventy languages," outward, beyond which there is no outward.
As it is stated in our portion,
that upon coming into the Land of Israel it was "and you shall write this Torah...
explain it well in seventy languages."
And regarding this, it is understood in our matter that upon coming into the Land of Israel in the future redemption,
there will be "explain it well" in seventy languages.
The question arises:
Why is it necessary to come to "explain it well" in seventy languages while being in the Land of Israel,
and in the future redemption? And one can say:
A) In order to influence the nations of the world, "and strangers shall stand and feed your flocks." And one can further say
(according to what is explained above):
B) For the Jews who are in the category of infants taken captive among the nations and do not yet know the holy tongue,
there must be "explain it well" in seventy languages, because since everything is already prepared for the redemption,
and the redemption comes in a manner of "I will hasten it,"
there is no time to wait until we teach all Jews the holy tongue,
therefore it is necessary to come to "explain it well" in seventy languages,
to explain to them the wellsprings of the inner dimension of the Torah in their language,
at least in brief,
but in a manner of a small amount holding a large amount.
And although the middle Rebbe explains that in the redemption in the manner of "I will hasten it" there is a deficiency relative to "in its time,"
because when "I will hasten it" comes, lesser sparks could be lost, heaven forbid, but now certainly there is also the advantage of "in its time,"
for "all the appointed times have passed,
only due to various and diverse reasons it has been delayed further.
Y
י
The redemption,
the various and diverse reasons become nullified in a manner of "I will hasten it," consequently then certainly nothing will be lost,
and all the sparks will go out of exile
(since we also have the advantage of "in its time"),
but since the various and diverse reasons become nullified in a manner of "I will hasten it,"
there is no time to teach all Jews the holy tongue,
therefore there must be "explain it well" in seventy languages.
This matter stands even more emphasized on the Sabbath day
(portion of Tavo):
On the Sabbath day, "all your work is done,"
and everything is prepared for the meal,
through the preparations on the Sabbath eve,
as our sages said, "whoever toiled on the Sabbath eve will eat on the Sabbath."
Consequently, everything is prepared so that there should be "when you come into the land."
And especially since it concerns Jews, for "and your people are all righteous,"
and the righteous are similar to their Creator,
consequently, who can say to Him, "what do You do?" is that when Jews merely decide upon this, they have the power to bring the redemption.
And now,
one must utilize the last moments of exile to prepare and educate oneself for the redemption.
And to do this with joy and a good heart,
just as all matters in the service of God in Torah and His commandments must be done with joy, as it is written in our portion, "you served the Lord your God with joy and with a good heart."
And this service must be done not in a manner of miracles, but specifically in a natural way, as explained in many places that the fulfillment of the commandments must be specifically in a natural way.
And as is known the story of the old Rebbe,
that while traveling on the ship he did not want to sanctify the moon in a miraculous way
(by stopping the ship in a miraculous way),
but specifically in a natural way,
through the fact that the captain of the ship would himself stop the ship and the old Rebbe could sanctify the moon with tranquility and contemplation, etc.
The preparations for this could have been in whatever manner,
even in a miraculous way; but
Yes
יא
The actual fulfillment of the commandment must be in a natural way.
From this there is also a lesson regarding the service in the time of exile as a preparation for "when you come into the land" in the future redemption:
Since we are now swimming in a river
(in the time of exile)
it is a certainty that we must have and we have great miracles;
איז א זיכערע זאך אז מ'דארף האבן און מ'האט נסים גדולים;
but together with this, the commandments themselves must be performed in a natural way,
and through this one comes from the "river" to an inhabited land, "when you come into the land."
And simply, the lesson is:
Knowing for certain that it will soon be "you will come to the land,"
one must add even more vitality in the service of G-d,
and especially standing in the eighteenth of Elul, vitality in the service of Elul,
which consists
(as hinted in the acronym of "Elul,"
as discussed in the farbrengen before this)
of the service in the three pillars upon which the world stands,
Torah, service, and acts of kindness,
and with the preface of the service of repentance,
and the matter of redemption,
in a manner of song
("To G-d they said, saying, 'I will sing'")
and joy,
service out of joy and goodness of heart
(as above).
So that when he performs the service out of joy, he fulfills all that is incumbent upon him,
including also influencing his surroundings.
And joy breaks through barriers,
beginning from the barriers in the time of exile, that in the short time that one still remains in exile there should be "and for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings,"
and afterwards this should break through the barrier of exile in general,
"the breaker went up before them,"
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,
immediately,
speedily in our days and in our time.
On this Erev Shabbat, which "whoever toils on Erev Shabbat will eat on Shabbat"
(as above),
which generally applies indeed to all six days,
but specifically on actual Erev Shabbat there was a special matter,
connected with the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the leader of our generation,
who "the leader is everything":
12
יב
This Erev Shabbat was the fifteenth of Elul,
the "birthday,"
the day of the founding of the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva
(in the year 5657)
by the founder of the yeshiva,
the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab) of blessed memory,
the leader in his generation,
and the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the leader of our generation is,
and remains always,
the active director of the yeshiva,
as he himself said that from this
(from being the active director)
he never resigns,
he remains active director always, all the days
(even though he also engaged in other matters of communal activity).
And the founding of the yeshiva
(on the fifteenth of Elul)
came in continuation, within three days
(as per the principle that anything less than three is considered close)
of the wedding of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, on the thirteenth of Elul.
And one can say the reason is because the perfection of a person
(and certainly of a tzaddik and leader)
is specifically through marriage,
as it is written "male and female He created them, and G-d blessed them,"
therefore the founding of the yeshiva, of which the leader of our generation is the permanent active director, was after and in proximity to his wedding,
on the fifteenth of Elul.
Afterwards,
in the continuation of time,
several details regarding the yeshiva were added,
until the famous talk in the year 5661 about "all who go out to the war of the House of David," etc.;
ביז די שיחה הידועה בשנת תרס"א פון "כל היוצא למלחמת בית דוד" 68 וכו';
but the founding of the yeshiva was on the fifteenth of Elul.
And one must explain the connection of the founding of the yeshiva with the portion of Ki Tavo, because the function of a yeshiva
(in general)
is to fulfill the matter of "when you come to the land ... and you will inherit it and dwell in it"
(yeshiva from the term "and you will dwell")
to fulfill settlement in the matter for which the yeshiva was founded.
And certainly the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva, whose intention of its founding was that there should be the matter of study of the revealed and the Chassidus and the spreading of the wellsprings outward and through this bring "the master has come," the King Moshiach,
as is known the talk of the founder of the yeshiva "all

who go out to the war of the House of David" regarding the special function of the students of the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva,
that they are "the soldiers of the House of David,"
who have the mission to go out "to the war of the House of David,"
the war to save the entirety of Israel from those "who have reproached Your enemies, G-d, who have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed one,"
and to reveal in the world the light of Moshiach ben David,
through the spreading of the wellsprings outward.
And this matter stands with extra emphasis in this year, because the verse
("who have reproached, etc.")
is in the chapter of Psalms corresponding to the number of years of the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva in this year
(the year 89),
as is known that a birthday is connected with reciting the chapter of Psalms corresponding to the number of his years.
Since the fifteenth of Elul is the day of the founding of the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva, it is understood the greatness of the elevation of this day in connection with the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva.
It is known the greatness of the elevation of a birthday of a person in general,
even of a non-Jew, that then "his mazal rules and helps him,"
all the more so of a Jew,
all the more so of a tzaddik and nasi. And from this it is also understood regarding the birthday of a yeshivah,
which is a matter that is general and pertains to the many,
and all the more so a yeshivah that was founded by a nasi of his generation and the active director is the nasi of our generation
[for as great as a nasi is,
it does not compare to the greatness of his actions,
and especially actions that pertain to the many]
that on the birthday
(foundation)
of the yeshivah "his mazal prevails."
And the questioners who ask questions and claim that a birthday is not a Jewish matter are simply ignorant questioners,
and this is not the place to occupy oneself with ignorance,
for it is a known matter that the concept of a birthday is brought in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah
(regarding several Tannaim and Amoraim)
and all the more so in the custom of Israel, Torah it is, that great ones and temimim and upright ones celebrated a great joy etc. on their birthday,
some publicly and some not publicly,
each one according to his measure.

And although "there is no mazal for Israel"
(so how can one say that the mazal of Israel prevails on a birthday)
the explanation of this is for superiority,
that a Jew is above the level of mazal,
and especially according to the explanation of "there is no mazal for Israel,"
that the "mazal of Israel" is the level of "nothing," Keter,
which is called "nothing,"
because it is above the order of the chain of descent
(which begins from Chochmah),
meaning that Keter is the level of "nothing" relative to the order of the chain of descent. And on the birthday of a Jew, his "mazal" prevails and rules,
from the level of "nothing"
(Keter).
And this is as stated regarding the birthday of Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah on the fifteenth of Elul.
From this it is understood that the instruction of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding the manner in which one must utilize a birthday also applies regarding the birthday of the foundation of Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah on the fifteenth of Elul, that all those who have a connection with Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah must certainly utilize this day with a celebration of the birthday of the yeshivah.
And as is understood simply that this
(celebration of the birthday of the yeshivah)
pertains to all those who studied there. And even those who were not privileged to study there, it has a connection to them if they received from someone who studied there. And even if they were also not privileged to this, they received an illumination of an illumination;
איז שייך צו די אלע וואס האבן דארטן געלערנט. און אפילו די וואס האבן ניט זוכה געווען דארטן צו לערנען האט עס צו זיי א שייכות אויב זיי האבן מקבל געווען פון איינעם וואס האט דארט געלערנט. און אפילו אויב זיי האבן דערצו אויך ניט זוכה געווען האבן זיי מקבל געווען א הארה דהארה;
and since this speaks about Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah which is connected with Chabad,
Chochmah Binah and Daat is explained in many places also in the continuation of TaRa"B. There are those who delude themselves that until they hear that it is written thus in the continuation of E"B they do not accept it...]
that Daat
(the middle line)
is drawn from above, above, down to below, below without any change
(not like Chochmah and Binah),
consequently, even an illumination of an illumination etc. is connected with the essence of the matter.
It is a clear matter that for all these, yesterday
(the fifteenth of Elul)
should have been the celebration of the birthday of the foundation of Tomchei Temimim.
Therefore I thought that coming back yesterday from the Ohel I would see how "770" is storming, not in a manner of "it shall not ascend and it shall not come,"
but rather storming from the storm of the birthday!
Tu
טו
In practice it was...
Hush, quiet!
Even if someone sat by himself under the fan and stormed there,
indeed in a manner that it is not-fit-to-mention. That it is the fifteenth of Elul,
the day of the foundation of Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah,
but in a manner of "walk discreetly,"
that no one should know of it, this is the opposite of the intention of our Rabbis, our leaders,
it is not only not their intention,
but the opposite of the intention! The intention of our Rabbis, our leaders, and the intention of Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah is "let your springs spread forth outward,"
one should not only storm for oneself under the fan; not for this was Tomchei Temimim founded,
but rather that one should storm openly and publicly!
He has all kinds of excuses for this,
and especially when it is connected to Chabad he finds all kinds of explanations why he did not storm into the birthday. And especially since this year the fifteenth of Elul was Erev Shabbat, he claims that according to Halacha one must then be occupied with preparations for Shabbat,
and especially a Shabbat of Parshat Ki Tavo,
entering the Land of Israel he has no time to go sing a melody and the like!
What do all these excuses help when the actual deed is lacking?!
You studied in Tomchei Temimim,
and you derive benefit from what you studied there,
to the extent that this affects their livelihood very much, but when the fifteenth of Elul comes, he cannot be found anywhere...
Where is he?!...
All of Israel are presumed to be of kosher status, he is certainly occupied with good things,
but when a matter that is time-dependent arrives,
the birthday of the Tomchei Temimim yeshivah from which you derive benefit,
one must first and foremost do the time-dependent matter.
One goes around stately and it is quiet,
and one fears that if one will be aroused, one will rouse oneself from one's slumber and sleep when one's soul is "ascending and drawing for him life from above"
Sixteen
טז
This is only "drawing for him life from above," but this is not the intention of Tomchei Temimim,
not for this were you raised;
ניט אויף דעם ביסטו אויסגעוואקסן;
the intention of Tomchei Temimim is not only to benefit oneself
("drawing for him"),
but rather that "your springs shall spread forth outward,"
also among others!
It has become a plague not written in the Torah that when it comes to a matter of actual deed,
no one does anything and the matter remains stuck in the middle!
Not only does one not do the matter itself, for which he can still excuse himself that he has better things to do
(even though this is also not an excuse)
but one does not even arouse another that he should do,
for which there is already no excuse
(even according to his view that he is occupied with other things)!
Even if one thinks about it, one talks oneself into it that it is a pot belonging to partners,
consequently he holds that he does not need to do anything and he relies that the other partners will do.
Need one even mention when he thinks that there are those greater than him,
they are not only equal partners with him,
but rather those greater than him should do!
In practice, after all the excuses, no one does anything,
everyone with the same excuse,
that he relies that others will do.
And to such an extent that it does not even occur to anyone that one should at least arouse another that something must be done.
Unless a brazen-faced person comes and does it himself,
or he pesters the other to such an extent that he does not let him sleep and then he might do something.
Even if one becomes aroused and writes and asks and arouses another that something must be done, it remains at that,
and afterwards one hears nothing more from him!...
From this one understands the answer that is given to the questioner,
knowing that he only asks to fulfill his obligation and afterwards he goes back to sleep.
A Jerusalemite Jew once told me,
that someone who
Seventeen
יז
would have years pass between them came to him on Erev Yom Kippur
(or Erev Rosh Chodesh)
to ask for forgiveness. That one knew with whom he was dealing and knew that the next day the other would continue to conduct himself toward him with the same attitude;
בעטן מחילה. יענער האט דאך געוואוסט מיט וועמען ער האט צו טאן און האט געוואוסט אז אויף מארגן וועט יענער ממשיך זיין פירן זיך מיט אים מיטן זעלבן יחס;
but on the other hand, there is a law that when one comes to ask for forgiveness
(and especially three times)
one is cruel if one does not forgive him. So he caught himself with a contrivance and said to him:
Just as you ask me for forgiveness, so I forgive you!
So too regarding our matter:
When someone already comes to ask what should be done,
but he does it only to fulfill his obligation, one answers him also in this manner.
This has, as mentioned,
become a plague not written in the Torah,
that when it comes to a matter of actual deed,
no one does anything.
And this is so not only regarding the birthday of Tomchei Temimim,
but regarding many matters,
including also regarding the neighborhood.
Why is the neighborhood different from all other neighborhoods I do not know!
And the explanation that near the sea it is dry etc. is not even a weak excuse?!...
One does not even fool oneself with this explanation. As is known the saying of the Rebbe Maharash,
that the Almighty one does not fool,
another one also does not fool,
one fools only oneself. Is it then a trick to fool a fool! In our matter one does not even fool oneself with this explanation why the neighborhood is different,
because one knows oneself that this is no explanation.
The only explanation for this is because no one does anything in actual deed,
as above.
My intention is not to speak words of rebuke,
and certainly it will not harm anyone and especially on Shabbat.
Yech
יח
If one would speak rebuke the four cubits would perhaps look different. But I will not speak any rebuke,
I have not undertaken this,
neither do I want to do this,
and I am not capable of this.
And I do not hold myself to change in this matter. If one wants a rebuke-giver one should choose someone who should speak rebuke.
And regarding the practical regarding the birthday of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah on the fifteenth of Elul:
Although on the fifteenth of Elul they did not storm they [did] the study
(of his honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the leader of our generation)
of the second Passover,
that it is not lost therefore one can still complete the celebration of the birthday in the days after it.
And to complete it with greater strength and greater might in a manner of double strength,
and in a manner of "second Passover",
which elevates also the matter of the leaven,
as explained in many places that during the holiday of Passover one cannot rectify leaven. Therefore one must remove it,
but not so on the second Passover "leaven and matzah are with him in the house",
because one has the power to elevate the leaven,
similar to the two loaves on the holiday of Shavuot.
And since here they did not celebrate the birthday there is a concern that in other places where they should have celebrated the birthday they also did not celebrate it properly one must inform them also,
that it is not lost and one can now complete it in a manner of double strength.
And simply that today,
or tonight,
or tomorrow,
and some after a later time
[but as close as possible to the fifteenth of Elul,
because the closer to the fifteenth of Elul the more one receives from the influence of the fifteenth of Elul]
one should celebrate the celebration of the birthday of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah with greater strength and greater might,
in a manner of double strength.
Then the aforementioned question will further arise who should do this?
Yud Tes
יט
One has the rule that "a person is close to himself". And since one feels that the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah is his thing he will certainly do in this
(because "a person is close to himself").
If he has a doubt about this he should go to a rabbi and ask him whether the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah has a connection to him. If not he should sleep healthily "and your sleep will be pleasant";
טאמער ער האט א ספק בזה זאל ער גיין צו א רב און ביי אים פרעגן צי ישיבת תומכי תמימים האט צו אים א שייכות. אויב ניט זאל ער שלאפן געזונטערהייט "וערבה שנתך" 90;
if he merited to have a connection to it then he will certainly celebrate the birthday.
And especially on the birthday of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah in this year when the chapter of Psalms corresponding to the number of years of the Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah in this year concludes with "for Your enemies have reproached, O Lord, for Your enemies have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed" which constitutes the war of the students of Tomchei Temimim in the war of the house of David
(as above section 69),
And it is a clear thing that one will be victorious in this war because "what is written in the Scripture? Blessed is the Lord forever, amen and amen",
an expression of an oath,
and "amen" indicates victory over the opponent,
and all the more so twice "amen".
And the completeness of the victory in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach.
Discourse (like a talk)
beginning with the words "this day etc.".
It is also customary to stop on a matter in the weekly Torah portion together with the commentary of Rashi,
a matter in the notes of the father on the Zohar,
a matter in Pirkei Avot and a matter in the daily lesson of Rambam.
Regarding the portion of Rashi, it was requested that one should personally arouse regarding a perplexing Rashi. One will stop on one of the topics in Rashi on which one stopped in the booklets,
but there one only aroused on the superficial question and stopped there,
when in truth there is in this a broader and deeper question:
Chapter
כ
On the verse "Guard all the commandment which I command you today" Rashi stops on the words "Guard all the commandment" and explains:
"A present tense,
[And in order to add explanation in this,
he adds to this explanation in the vernacular,
the place of Rashi]
'grand' in the vernacular".
One stopped on the usual precision:
Since Rashi explains only the word "Guard" why does he copy
(in the beginning of the comment)
also the words "all the commandment"?
When one contemplates this, however, one sees that in this there is a broader and deeper question,
on which one did not stop:
What is difficult in the verse that Rashi needs to say an explanation at all? And what does Rashi want to say with his explanation
("a present tense")?
The Siftei Chachamim explains
[What is generally one accustomed to bring the Siftei Chachamim,
nevertheless in this matter it was not brought in the booklets)
in the name of other commentators
[The Siftei Chachamim generally collects also from other commentators]:
"Explanation: one who guards this commandment always,
not a command form,
that is, the Shin is vowelized with a Sheva. Also, one should not explain it that it is an infinitive, that is, 'Guard you shall guard' would be required, like 'Open you shall open,
Give you shall give'".
It is entirely incomprehensible:
A) How can it be a difficulty in the simple meaning of the verses that "Guard all the commandment" is not a command?!
If this
(saying that this is not a command)
is not contrary to the simple meaning, I do not know what is contrary to the simple meaning!
And even though it says "Guard" with a Kamatz under the Shin:
B) The five-year-old student of Scripture already learned earlier in the Ten Commandments "Guard the Shabbat day",
where there it also says "Guard"
(with a Kamatz under the Shin)
not with a Sheva,
even though there it is certainly a command, one of the Ten Commandments.
And similarly "Remember
(with a Kamatz under the Zayin)
the Shabbat day",
which is also a command
(and a command in itself from "Guard").
And as one says it in the evening prayer of Shabbat night
Chapter
כא
"Guard and Remember
(in one utterance) "!
And especially according to Rashi on the verse "Take this book of the Torah" "Like Remember,
Guard,
Go". And as discussed once,
that Rashi's intention is to prove that even though "Take" is not a language of action and command,
but a language that indicates the essence of the matter of taking
(and in the language of grammar books "infinitive"),
it means here a command. And for this he brings the proofs from "Remember Guard Go",
which are also languages of "infinitive" that are used here in the sense of a command.
It is thus similarly understood regarding "Guard all the commandment",
that even though it is written with a Sheva it can be a language of command.
And on the contrary:
Regarding "Take this book of the Torah" one can learn that it is not a command,
but a suggestion or adornment and the like
(and Rashi there clarifies that it is a command;
(און רש"י טוט דארט אויף אז דאס איז א ציווי 108;
but regarding "Guard all the commandment" one cannot learn at all that it is not a command!
It is therefore proven to say that even when it says "Guard"
(and the like)
with a Sheva vowel under the Shin it does not negate a command form,
but here it is written with a Kamatz under the Shin in order to emphasize when the time of the obligation of the command is in the present.
And even though this is a superficial difficulty on the explanation of the Siftei Chachamim, one did not stop on this in the booklets. By a five-year-old student of Scripture I did not ask,
a five-year-old does not write his novellae in the booklets;
א בן חמש שרייבט ניט זיינע חידושים אין די קובצים;
but those who write in the booklets did not catch on to this.
And as will be explained below.
Another topic in our portion which Rashi seemingly should have explained and did not explain:
At the end of the portion it says "And Moses called to all Israel and said to them: You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, the great trials which your eyes saw..."
The classic difficulty arises:
Chapter
כב
Moses spoke the words after "the generation of the wilderness had already perished"
(in the language of Rashi),
and Moses spoke to those about whom it is written "and you who cleave to the Lord your God are alive, all of you, this day,"
"all of them whole and ready to enter the land, without any among them of those upon whom the decree had been decreed."
Now, how does Moses say to that generation that entered the land "you have seen etc. which your eyes have seen etc." when "the generation of the wilderness had already perished"
(the Jews who saw the miracles in Egypt),
and Moses speaks to their children who were not in Egypt and were born later?!
[And of course one cannot say that "you have seen" refers (also) to the miracle of the descent of the manna in the wilderness and the like (which that generation that entered the land also saw), because the verse explicitly emphasizes "you have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, the great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders."]
One cannot answer that "you have seen" refers to Joshua and Caleb and to the Jews who were younger than twenty years of age at the time of the sin
(upon whom the decree was not),
who saw the miracles in Egypt, because "the Torah speaks with regard to the majority,"
and even though no exact number is given of how many Jews were younger than twenty at the time of the sin,
it is nevertheless understood and simple that they were not the majority of the children of Israel,
and the majority of the children of Israel
(in the fortieth year,
thirty-nine years after the decree)
were Jews who were born in the wilderness, so the question returns to its place:
How can Moses say to Jews "you have seen etc." when most of them did not see the miracles in Egypt?!
And as will be explained below.
In my father's notes on the Zohar, there are no notes on the Zohar in our portion;
אין די הערות פון טאטן אויפן זהר זיינען ניטא קיינע הערות על הזהר בפרשתנו;
however, there is a note
(in Parshat Chukat)
where he brings and explains the verse in our portion "this day you have become a people" and interprets "this day" as referring to Rosh Hashanah
(as discussed earlier in the discourse).
[Section] 23
כג
In the notes, however, my father explains only the precise nuances of the language etc.,
and not the lesson from it in divine service; one must understand the lesson from what is explained there in divine service.
And since this Shabbat
(Parshat Ki Tavo,
where the verse "this day you have become a people" appears)
blesses the 18th of Elul,
the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, which is certainly by divine providence, one must also find a connection between the explanation in the notes on the verse "this day you have become a people" and the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe.
And as will be explained below.
In today's chapter, we study two chapters,
chapters three and four
(so that we can finish Pirkei Avot on this Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah).
Since we study these two chapters on this Shabbat which blesses the 18th of Elul, it is worthwhile to seek a connection between these chapters and the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe.
And likewise, in the daily lesson in the Rambam's book, one must seek a connection of it with today's portion,
"When you come into the land."
And as will be explained below.
In connection with the fact that it is the Shabbat of the blessing of the 18th of Elul,
the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, which is indeed connected with the matter of "may your springs spread forth outward," let those who have prepared drinks for various farbrengens and celebrations in connection with the matter of spreading Judaism and spreading the springs outward now come forward,
and they themselves should say "L'chaim,"
and then distribute a portion of the drink to those assembled here,
in order to include them also in this,
and the remainder they should distribute each one at his own farbrengen and celebration.
And being that it is the Shabbat which blesses the 18th of Elul, this will add even more strength to all these activities. And especially since it is also Shabbat of Parshat Ki Tavo, and even though "Ki Tavo" is in the future tense,
it is nevertheless understood that since the Torah is eternal,
even after there is the "when you come into the land," there will be there itself
[Section] 24
כד
ascents upon ascents in the "when you come into the land etc. and you shall inherit it and dwell in it,"
and "this day you have become a people,"
"this day" is a present tense expression,
"every day they should be in your eyes as if today you entered into a covenant with Him."
And simply, then one has completeness in all matters,
and one has a year of light and a year of blessing and a year of the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,

The explanation in Rashi:
According to what was discussed above, that one must say that "Keep
(with a kamatz under the shin)
all the commandment" is a command
(not like the interpretation of the Sifsei Chachamim),
because of a) the simple interpretation of this,
b) and as we see it regarding "Keep the Sabbath day"
(which is certainly a command)
and so forth, it is understood that that which it says "Keep" with a kamatz under the shin does not preclude that this is a language of command,
and the reason why it says a kamatz under the shin
(and not with a sheva)
is in order to emphasize the time of obligation of this command, that it is a constant command,
a present tense language,
as above.
One must still, however, understand:
It is understandable when a specific command is stated in the language of "source"
(present tense language),
like "Keep
(and likewise Remember)
the Sabbath day to sanctify it",
it is understandable that this comes to teach that this is a constant command
(present tense language),
as Rashi explains
(on "Remember the Sabbath day"):
"Remember is a passive participle and it is like... and so its explanation: give mind to always remember the Sabbath day etc."
(and likewise "Remember this day on which you went out of Egypt" "it teaches that we mention the Exodus from Egypt every day");
(ועד"ז "זכור 117 את היום הזה אשר יצאתם ממצרים" "למד שמזכירין יצי"מ בכל יום") 118;
thus
כה
But when it speaks about a general command
(regarding all the commandments)
"Keep all the commandment," how is a constant keeping of every commandment applicable,
for example, the keeping of Passover on Sukkot and Shavuot
(Passover one is obligated on Passover, not on Sukkot and Shavuot),
and the keeping of Shavuot on Sukkot and Passover,
and the keeping of Sukkot on Passover and Shavuot,
and so forth regarding the rest of the festivals and time-bound commandments.
One cannot say,
that "Keep all the commandment" comes to teach that every commandment is a constant commandment, as is proven from the above itself, that the verse changes and writes "Keep"
(and Remember)
specifically in the language of source regarding the Sabbath
(and so forth)
and not by other commandments].
It will be understood by prefacing another question:
Why does it state here the entire verse "Keep all the commandment which I command you today":
Here it speaks about the command "And you shall set up for yourself great stones etc. and you shall write upon them all the words of this Torah etc." how does it fit to suddenly say "Keep all the commandment etc." a completely different matter
(seemingly)?!
The explanation in this is that both of the above questions are answered one by the other:
Rashi indeed comes here to innovate that also here,
regarding "Keep all the commandment,"
the interpretation is that this is "present tense language,"
a constant command
(even though it speaks about all the commandments).
And the reasoning in this is understood from the continuation of the verses
(therefore Rashi himself does not need to explain it):
"Keep all the commandment etc." comes as an introduction to that which is stated afterward "And you shall set up
(with a vav hachibur,
which indicates the continuation of the matter,
not a new matter)
for yourself great stones etc. and you shall write upon them all the words of this Torah etc.":
In order that it should be "Keep all the commandment etc."
(present tense language,
constant command)
one says that there should be "And you shall set up for yourself great stones etc. and you shall write upon them all the words of this Torah," which
("all the words of this Torah" refers to "all the commandment" (which is stated before).
And through this there will be "Keep all the commandment" in a constant manner,
because throughout the entire year one will always see before oneself "all the words of this Torah" ("all the commandment") which is written on the great stones,
and this will constantly remind of all the commandments.
thus
כו
Based on this, all the above precise points are understood:
The continuation of the verses. How it is possible to say regarding "all the commandment" the language "Keep" in the language of source. Why Rashi quotes
(not only the word "Keep," but)
also the words "all the commandment" because in this lies the entire novelty,
that even though it speaks about "all the commandment," this too is a constant command
(present tense language).
With several more precise points.
And regarding that which is stated in Siftei Chachamim,
that "Keep all the commandment" is "not a language of command" it is necessary to interpret with difficulty,
so he also holds that it is a command,
only the main emphasis in this is
(not a language of command, but)
a language of source,
a language of present tense.
In any case, now we are discussing the commentary of Rashi and not Siftei Chachamim.
The explanation in "You have seen etc.":
According to the simple interpretation, it can be said that "You have seen...
which your eyes have seen" does not specifically mean the matter of sight in its simple sense
(and not hearing),
but the totality of knowledge of these miracles, and because here it is relevant that the miracles did not effect the matter of "a heart to know etc.," there is therefore no difference whether the Jews saw the miracles in Egypt with their own eyes or heard about them from their fathers and mothers,
grandmothers and grandfathers and the like,
because even when they hear this from their parents,
it effects as if "You have seen...
your eyes have seen,"
and this is sufficient reason that this should effect "a heart to know."
Regarding testimony, it is relevant that it should be "from their mouths and not from their writing,"
but in order to effect "a heart to know" there is no difference whether this comes through sight or through hearing,
and it can also be through hearing.
And as we also see in the parable that Rashi brings "And Hashem did not give you a heart to know, for a person does not grasp the full depth of his teacher's mind and the wisdom of his teaching until forty years etc.":
From this teacher one receives through hearing, not through sight.
That is, that "a heart to know"
("grasps the full depth of his teacher's mind")
comes through hearing. From this it is understood also in the analogue,
that "a heart to know" among the Jews comes through hearing
(and in that case there was not "seeing the sounds" as at the giving of the Torah....
Therefore there is no question as to how Moses said to the Jews "You have seen...
your eyes have seen"
(even though most Jews did not see the miracles in Egypt),
because the precision is not specifically sight in its simple sense, but
Thus:
כז
The totality of knowledge in this
(even if this comes through hearing).
Even if one will want to argue,
that here it still states the language "You have seen...
your eyes have seen," it can be said:
The matter of "a heart to know" is primarily relevant regarding the "priests, the Levites, and the judge who will be in those days,"
regarding the leaders of Israel and the tribe of Levi
(and similarly the elders and judges)
they were not included in the decree of the generation of the wilderness
(because they did not transgress the sin),
consequently they remained alive. And based on this it is understood that one can interpret "You have seen...
your eyes have seen" also in its simple sense regarding the tribe of Levi etc.,
who saw the miracles in Egypt and were alive at the time when Moses spoke here.
The matter in the glosses on the Zohar on the verse "This day you have become a people":
My father explains,
that "This day you have become a people,"
which refers to the giving of the Torah,
the interpretation is:
"The involvement and effort in Torah must be in a manner that every day they should be in your eyes as new,
as if this day he is standing at Mount Sinai and receiving the Torah. This is 'this day' which is three times the numerical value of Havayah, it is the three intellects of gadlut of Chabad of the Torah etc."
Afterwards my father says another interpretation:
"This verse can be interpreted that it refers to Rosh Hashanah.
'This day' refers to the day of Rosh Hashanah
(which is called 'this' as it is said 'this day is the beginning of Your works' and it is above the 25th of Elul, and it is on the sixth day of creation...)
And then 'you have become a people,'
as it is said 'to establish you this day as a people for Him' which refers to Rosh Hashanah etc."
And based on this it can be said the connection of this verse "This day you have become a people" with the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe
[in addition to what was discussed in the maamar,
that "This day you have become a people" is connected with the Baal Shem Tov and "for praise and for a name and for glory,"
corresponding to Chabad,
is connected with the Alter Rebbe]:
The Baal Shem Tov revealed to the Jews the matter of "This day you have become a people" through the fact that the Baal Shem Tov used to go around in the towns and call out to the Jews the words "Baruch Hashem,"
Thus:
כח
"Blessed is the Almighty,"
in order to reveal to them the matter of "you have become a people."
And in a manner of "this day,"
"every day they should be in your eyes as new":
One of the primary innovations in the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov is that the renewal of the world is at every single moment anew from absolute nothingness and non-existence. As the Alter Rebbe brings in Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah "the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov" on "Forever, Hashem, Your word stands firm in the heavens," that the letters of the Ten Utterances constantly stand within the creations and they bring them into being at every single moment anew,
and "if the letters were to depart for a moment, Heaven forbid, and return to their source, all the heavens would become nothing and non-existence, and all the creations would be as if they had never existed at all...
exactly as before the six days of creation."
From this it is understood,
that according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov one can more easily fulfill the matter of "each day they should be in your eyes as new":
Without the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov one must reach a great effort in order to feel that "each day they should be in your eyes as new";
לולא תורת הבעש"ט דארף מען דערצו אנקומען צו א יגיעה גדולה בכדי מרגיש זיין אז "בכל יום יהיו בעיניך חדשים";
When one hears, however, that the Baal Shem Tov innovated, or revealed,
[as is known the meaning in "and the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov,"
that the Baal Shem Tov revealed it,
because the matter already stands in Midrash Tehillim, but as one sees in practice that when many studied the Midrash Tehillim (before the explanation of the Baal Shem Tov) they did not necessarily fully hear the emphasis that the world is created anew at every single moment. And especially that the Baal Shem Tov emphasizes that the renewal of the world at every single moment is in a manner,
that if the letters of the Ten Utterances become removed,
the creation becomes "nothing and absolute non-existence and were as if they had never existed at all...
exactly as before the six days of creation."]
that the world is renewed at every single moment anew from absolute nothingness and non-existence,
and when one contemplates this in one's own soul, it is much easier to effect within oneself the feeling that "each day they should be in your eyes
as
כט
new,"
because the person himself and the entire world were just created anew from absolute nothingness and non-existence,
it is a simple thing that the matter of "you have become a nation"
(and all matters of the Torah and the commandments)
is in a manner of "new" literally!
And one should connect this with the explanation
(in the note of the father)
that "this day you have become a nation" refers to Rosh Hashanah:
It is explained in many places that although the creation of the world was on the twenty-fifth of Elul,
and on the sixth day was the creation of man,
nevertheless in all the years thereafter the world is created anew,
"this day is the beginning of Your works,"
on Rosh Hashanah
(the day of the creation of man),
specifically then all things return to their original state to absolute nothingness and non-existence until within the innermost aspect of the Emanator until within the Essence and Being, etc.,
and one must reach a new flow to draw down from the Essence and Being and innermost aspect of above,
until it is drawn down below
(as explained in the Siddur).
And according to the aforementioned teaching of the Baal Shem Tov, the "this day
(the beginning of Your works")
and "this day
(you have become a nation)
" is actualized at every single moment throughout the entire year. In other words, the Baal Shem Tov says that Rosh Hashanah exists at every single moment,
because at every single moment the world is created anew from absolute nothingness and non-existence
(the content of the matter of Rosh Hashanah)!
So the question is why do we not celebrate Rosh Hashanah every day and every moment?!
I am not obligated to answer all questions...
But this is the content of the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that "this day" is at every single moment anew.
And based on this it is easier to evoke the feeling in the service of man of "each day they should be in your eyes as new,"
as above.
Additionally, the verse "this day you have become a nation" also has a connection to the Alter Rebbe, as is understood from what is explained in the note that "this day" is "the numerical value of three times Havayah, which is the three intellects of gadlut of Chabad of Torah,"
which was the innovation of the Alter Rebbe,
a new soul,
that he brought the wellsprings of the innermost aspect of the Torah of the Baal Shem Tov into wisdom, understanding, and knowledge
(intellects of gadlut),
until in a manner of "they will be sustained" from it.
[This means]
ל
That is to say that the Alter Rebbe reveals that the matter of "this day
(you have become a nation)
" as it is according to the Baal Shem Tov
(renewal of something from nothing at every single moment from absolute nothingness and non-existence,
"each day they should be in your eyes as new")
is drawn into Chabad
(three times Havayah,
the gematria of "this day").
According to the above, the instruction from this in the service of man is also understood:
As mentioned above,
when one contemplates the aforementioned teaching of the Baal Shem Tov, it is easier to effect upon oneself the feeling of "in every day they shall be as new in your eyes" in "you have become a nation" and all the Torah and commandments, because since the Jew and the entire world were just created anew literally,
it is understood and simple that all his matters must be in a new manner.
And this is also an advice that nullifies many claims:
When one demands of someone that he do something,
and regarding a time-bound matter that he do in the Elul campaigns,
he can claim that he is occupied with other things,
or he is exhausted from doing so much yesterday and the day before,
and needs to rest in order to be able to do tomorrow and the day after.
For example:
In the month of Elul, one demands of him that he add saying three chapters of Psalms every day. He claims that he can barely manage with the monthly quota of Psalms.
When he contemplates, however, the aforementioned teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that he was just created anew from absolute nothingness and non-being, what does it matter what he did yesterday and what he will do tomorrow;
בשעת ער איז זיך אבער מתבונן אין תורת הבעש"ט הנ"ל אז ער איז ערשט באשאפן געווארן מחדש מאין ואפס המוחלט איז וואס איז נוגע וואס ער האט געטאן נעכטן און וואס ער וועט טאן מארגן;
That is like he was yesterday,
but today is today,
not yesterday and not tomorrow,
and today he is a completely new creation,
not the same person as yesterday,
consequently, he must do in an entirely new manner that which is demanded of him today!
He was exhausted yesterday from yesterday's service,
but today he is a new creation,
and in the meantime he has slept and rested, consequently he must today do that which is required of him,
in a new manner,
with his new and fresh powers.
No
לא
Likewise, when someone comes with an excuse that his honor was offended and the like.
One tells him: you were offended as you were yesterday;
זאגט מען אים מ'האט דיר פוגע געווען ווי דו ביסט געווען נעכטן;
but today you are a new creation,
a new person,
not the same person who was offended yesterday, so why are you affected by it?!
For this is the advice that when one contemplates the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov regarding oneself,
it will certainly effect. And in the language of the verse "and test Me please in this,"
one should try and one will see that this works:
one should learn and contemplate the aforementioned teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
but not merely in a manner that he learns it a hundred times and one and reviews it etc.,
but in a manner
(as his holy honor, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe says)
that the teaching learns him,
he will see that this will effect upon him at least at this moment when he thinks about it regarding himself.
And in this very matter comes the instruction of "this day" from the perspective of the innovation of the Alter Rebbe,
that this descends in the three intellects of Chabad:
One claims that he is already exhausted from toiling in Chassidus
(Chabad),
consequently he will now learn lightly
(not, heaven forbid, go idle,
but learn lightly).
And he has on this another example from Rabbi Yochanan,
that "Rabbi Yochanan would go and sit at the gates of the mikvah, he said:
When the daughters of Israel ascend from the immersion of mitzvah, they should encounter me, so that they may have sons as handsome as I, learned in Torah as I, etc."
One tells him:
You were exhausted from your yesterday's toil,
or from eating kugel yesterday...
but afterwards you slept and rested, and today you are a new creation,
consequently you can and must continue to toil in Chassidus.
And likewise, one can learn from this an instruction regarding all matters of service.
The connection of this lesson of Rambam with the portion "When you come into the land":
In the service of "When you come into the land"
(as in all matters of service)
there is that which is in the line of holiness and light,
and afterwards
Heart
לב
As in this comes from the aspect of the advantage of light from darkness:
Light is indeed a high level. But when one wants to have the advantage of light, it is specifically from darkness.
And likewise regarding "When you come into the land":
"When you come into the land" in itself is a most exalted matter, that one goes into the land of Israel,
the holy land. But when one hears the darkness of the place from which one departs in order to go into the land of Israel, one has the advantage of light from darkness in "When you come into the land."
And one can say that from today's Rambam lesson where he speaks about the impurity of the land of the nations, the descent from outside the land relative to the virtue of the land of Israel, one can extract the advantage of light from darkness in "When you come into the land."
This matter is also seen,
and with even more emphasis,
at the conclusion of today's Rambam lesson;
בסיום פון היינטיקן שיעור רמב"ם;
and there one also sees the greatness of the belovedness of Jews in general:
At the conclusion of the lesson, the Rambam writes:
"And the roads of the returnees from Babylon are presumed pure even though they are intermingled in the land of the nations."
From this one sees the greatness of the elevation that is accomplished through "When you come into the land" and the greatness of the power of a Jew:
Even though the roads of the returnees from Babylon are "intermingled in the land of the nations,"
nations surround them on all sides, the returnees from Babylon had the power to accomplish through "When you come into the land"
(their ascent to the land of Israel)
that even the roads "to the land" should be in a state of presumed purity,
and not doubtful purity,
but definite purity
(as explained above in the Rambam regarding the distinctions in this matter),
and a presumed purity that remains until this very day,
notwithstanding that in the interim over 2000 years have passed and nations have been active there throughout all those generations, etc.!
To such an extent is the power of a Jew and of the service of "When you come into the land"
(the ascent of the returnees from Babylon to the land of Israel)
that it also transforms the roads which are "intermingled in the land of the nations" to purity and holiness.
33
לג
This brings out in a wondrous manner the advantage of light from darkness in the matter of "When you come into the land," that in addition to the essential virtue of "When you come into the land,"
it also has the virtue of the advantage of light from darkness,
that one transforms the roads which are "intermingled in the land of the nations,"
including nations which are opposed to Jews and Judaism,
to purity and holiness.
This is the intent of the aforementioned story of the Alter Rebbe, that while traveling on a ship on the way to "the land of Israel,"
"When you come into the land,"
he transformed the non-Jew who was steering the ship,
so that he himself would stop the ship in order that the Alter Rebbe could fulfill the commandment of sanctifying the moon in a natural manner, in a state of rest.
From this there is also a lesson for now:
If the returnees from Babylon
(the ascent of Ezra)
accomplished
(through "When you come into the land")
the presumed purity of the roads,
even though at that time only the two tribes ascended
(not the ten tribes),
and among them only a part of the two tribes, all the more so in the current redemption and ascent to the land of Israel
("When you come into the land")
from the current exile,
when all Jews ascend without exception, they certainly have the power to transform the roads which are intermingled in the land of the nations to purity and holiness.
And the power for this is derived from the fact that one goes on the roads that the Almighty indicates,
one does not need to go seek new roads,
for one already has a paved path.
And at that time one had the power,
as stated,
to transform the roads intermingled in the land of the nations and also to transform the nations themselves, as was said in today's haftarah,
that "And nations shall walk by your light,"
and the nations will bring "your sons from afar,
their silver and their gold with them,
for the name of the Lord your God,"
as explained there at length how the nations will be transformed and come "
(When you come)
into the land."
The explanation of the connection of today's chapters
(3 and 4)
with the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe:
The third chapter begins:
"Akavya ben Mahalalel says: Reflect upon three things and you will not come to transgression,"
and the first thing is "Know from where you came."
34
לד
In addition to the simple interpretation of "Know from where you came" "from a putrid drop"
(as the continuation of the mishnah)
there is the inner interpretation of this:
"Know" that "you came" from the aspect of "Nothingness."
That is, a Jew must know that the root of his soul is from the aspect of Nothingness,
the aspect of Keter,
which is called "Nothingness" because it is above the order of the chain of descent
(which begins from the aspect of Chochmah).
And in the language of the prayer "The soul that You placed within me is pure,"
and this
("is pure")
refers to the aspect of Keter
(the aspect of Nothingness),
which is higher than "You created, etc." which refers to the world of Beriah,
the beginning of the order of the chain of descent.
And the concept
("Know from where you came")
is strengthened through the aforementioned teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that the creation of creatures ex nihilo is in every single moment anew from absolute nothing and naught.
Since the something is created in every moment from the aspect of nothing
(something from nothing and absolute naught),
the contemplation and reflection of "Know from where you came" is a constant contemplation and reflection
("Know" is a present tense term)
because the "Know from where you came"
(from the aspect of nothing)
is in every single moment anew.
And although the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov
(creation ex nihilo in every moment)
pertains to all creatures in the world, however, the root above all creatures in the world is not only from the aspect of nothing
(Keter)
but rather every creature has its mazal and angel and root in the Chayot HaMerkavah, etc.;
נאר יעדער נברא האט זיין מזל און מלאך און שרש בחיות המרכבה וכו';
however, the root of the soul of a Jew is from "nothing,"
the aspect of Keter,
"She is pure"
(which is above "You have created"),
the true nothing that is connected with the true something.
And therefore it is fitting to say primarily to a Jew "Know from where you came," the aspect of the true nothing
(Keter),
"She is pure."
And through that a Jew contemplates "Know from where you came,"
that he comes from the aspect of the true nothing
("She is pure")
it brings about that "you will not come to transgression,"
even not "to transgression"
(all the more so to actual transgression).
This matter also has a connection with the Baal Shem Tov himself
(in addition to the connection to the aforementioned teaching of the Baal Shem Tov)
as is known in the talks of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
that the Baal Shem Tov is the aspect of Keter
[and in particular, the Baal Shem Tov is Atik,
and the Maggid is Arich],
the aspect of "nothing"
("Know from where you came").

No. Further in this chapter
(third)
one finds another connection with the Baal Shem Tov:
The Mishnah says
(further in this chapter):
"Everything is foreseen."
It is known a second fundamental innovation of the Baal Shem Tov regarding Divine Providence
("Everything is foreseen")
that Divine Providence is upon every single detail of the inanimate, vegetative, animal, and human.
Unlike the opinion of the Rambam
[and it is known the debate how this aligns with the opinion of the Baal Shem Tov]
that Divine Providence upon every single detail is only for the human species,
and within that itself only upon the wise, etc.,
however, regarding gentiles and the creations of the inanimate, vegetative, and animal, Divine Providence is only upon the species as a whole
(not upon every single detail).
That is to say, according to the opinion of the Rambam, one must interpret that "Everything is foreseen" indeed means "everything,"
but only upon the species as a whole;
אבער נאר אויף כללות המין;
however, according to the opinion of the Baal Shem Tov, the interpretation of "everything" is literally every single detail. And accordingly, this aligns with the continuation of the Mishnah "and everything is according to the majority of the deed,"
where, according to all opinions, "everything" there does not mean only in general,
but rather in particular,
and likewise "Everything is foreseen" does not mean in general,
but rather in particular,
upon every single detail.
And it is sweetened accordingly that this comes in continuation to the preceding Mishnah "Beloved is man who was created in the image, etc., as it is said, 'For in the image of God He made man.'" And it is explained in the commentaries that "Beloved is man, etc." means human beings in general,
also the nations of the world,
who were all created in the image of God
(unlike the following clause in the Mishnah which speaks only about Jews, "Beloved are Israel, etc.").
Which further emphasizes the opinion of the Baal Shem Tov that Divine Providence is also upon every single individual of the nations of the world
(as is understood from that they were created in the image of God),
even also upon every single detail of the inanimate, vegetative, and animal,
also upon
(as an example from His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe)
a torn leaf that is rolling around. And also upon the manner in which the leaf rolls around,
by means of wind.
36
לו
Or a footstep, etc.,
and this pertains even to the primordial thought, etc.
Afterwards one learns
(on this Shabbat)
chapter four, where one sees immediately at its beginning the connection with the Alter Rebbe:
The chapter begins:
"Ben Zoma says: Who is wise? One who learns from every person."
One sees immediately the connection with the Alter Rebbe:
In the aforementioned talk, His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, says,
that the Baal Shem Tov is the aspect of Keter
(the Maggid is the aspect of Arich),
and the Alter Rebbe is the aspect of Chochmah,
the aspect of the true wise one.
From which it is understood that "Who is wise, etc." in this Mishnah is connected with the level of the Alter Rebbe, as it is understood and simple that the Mishnah speaks here about a true wise one,
and especially since this is a Mishnah in "matters of piety,"
it certainly speaks about a true wise one who already holds in "matters of piety," which was the Alter Rebbe.
According to this, when the Mishnah speaks about a true wise man,
the level of the Alter Rebbe, one will understand the proof that the Mishnah brings for this,
"From all my teachers I have gained understanding, for Your testimonies are my meditation,"
for ostensibly, the proof is from the first half of the verse "From all my teachers I have gained understanding,"
why does the Mishnah bring
(according to the version of the Siddur of the Alter Rebbe and several versions)
also the second half,
"for Your testimonies are my meditation"?
The question becomes even stronger according to the interpretation of the commentators of Scripture,
that "I have gained understanding" refers to understanding in Torah
("Your testimonies are my meditation")
according to which, also the beginning of the verse
("From all my teachers I have gained understanding")
has no connection to "Who is wise? He who learns from every man,"
which speaks about learning "from every person," not specifically matters of Torah?
One will understand it by first prefacing another question in the Mishnah:
The verse states explicitly, "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom...
nor the mighty man in his might...
nor the rich man in his riches,
for only in this should one boast: having understanding and knowing
Me.
לז
Now, how can the Mishnah in Pirkei Avot say "Who is wise, etc., Who is mighty, etc., Who is rich," when the Mishnah speaks to one who already holds in "matters of piety,"
and he is certainly fulfilling the command "Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, etc."?!
The explanation of this is according to the explanation in Chassidus of the aforementioned verse,
that "let him not boast" in wisdom, might, and wealth in their own right,
but when his wisdom, might, and wealth are only for the purpose that there should be "having understanding and knowing Me,"
in order to serve the Most High, wisdom in order to study Torah,
might in order to conquer his evil inclination and to be "one who runs to perform a mitzvah,"
and wealth in order to give charity, then he "boasts" also with these virtues.
And accordingly, it is understood regarding the Mishnah
("Who is wise, etc."):
The Mishnah speaks about one who possesses wisdom, might, and wealth for the purpose that it should be "having understanding and knowing Me,"
in which case he must "boast" in these virtues.
And according to this, it is understood why the Mishnah also brings the end of the verse
(as a proof for "Who is wise? He who learns from every man")
"From all my teachers I have gained understanding, for Your testimonies are my meditation":
The end of the verse "for Your testimonies are my meditation" emphasizes that this refers to a true wise man
(according to Torah)
whose "I have gained understanding" is connected to Torah
("Your testimonies are my meditation"),
and not merely wisdom in its own right,
i.e., wisdom
("I have gained understanding")
for the purpose that it should be "having understanding and knowing Me,"
in which case he is a true wise man and must "boast" with it. And specifically about such a wise man can one say "Who is wise? He who learns from every man," "From all my teachers I have gained understanding."
And one can say that the verse at the beginning of the Mishnah also explains the other sections in the Mishnah
("Who is mighty, etc.,"
"Who is rich, etc.")
that there too it does not speak about might and wealth in their own right,
but might and wealth for the purpose of "Your testimonies are my meditation," "having understanding and knowing Me."
Also at the conclusion of the chapter

one sees a connection with the Alter Rebbe,
the aspect of wisdom:
The chapter concludes:
"And against your will you are destined to give a judgment and accounting before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He."
Chapter 4, Mishnah 22.
לח
The concept of "judgment and accounting" comes specifically from the aspect of wisdom
(the level of the Alter Rebbe):
From the aspect of will
(Keter)
there is no division of details, "all who strike with a hammer before the king, etc.,"
because from the aspect of will there is no difference between a severe matter and a very light matter;
ווייל מצד בחי' רצון איז ניטא קיין חילוק צווישן א דבר חמור אדער א דבר הכי קל 173;
however, the aspect of wisdom clarifies and distinguishes between the division of details,
and specifically then the concept of "judgment and accounting" applies,
which consists of clarifying and distinguishing between the details of the differences between the severity of mitzvot and transgressions, etc., "Consider the loss incurred by performing a mitzvah against its reward, and the reward of a transgression against its loss."
But together with this, the Mishnah concludes "you are destined to give a judgment and accounting before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He."
That is, the connection of Keter

which is higher than the details of the king's decrees,

That this alludes to the connection of the two great luminaries,
the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe
(who both together were born on the 18th of Elul),
in the aspect of Keter and the aspect of Chochmah as discussed above,
that the Alter Rebbe innovated and brought down the wellsprings of the Baal Shem Tov,

That this is the general allusion of the connection between the two chapters that are learned on the Shabbat Mevarchim of the 18th of Elul with the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, that in the first chapter the Baal Shem Tov is alluded to and in the second chapter the Alter Rebbe is alluded to,
and both chapters become
(on this Shabbat)
one thing, a connection of Keter and Chochmah.
And as an introduction to this chapter, one recites the Mishnah "All of Israel have a share in the World to Come, as it is stated: 'And Your people are all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, in which to take pride.'"
That Jews bring pride to Above,
as it is said, "You yearn for the work of Your hands."
And after the conclusion of the chapter, one recites "Rabbi Chananya ben Akashya says: The Holy One, blessed be He, desired

grant merit to Israel; therefore He increased for them Torah and commandments, etc." From this it is understood that if one wishes to come to make a "reckoning" with Jews and to use the abundance of Torah and commandments contrary to the merit of Israel, one cannot do so,
for the reason for that which "He increased for them Torah and commandments" is in order "to grant merit to Israel," "The Holy One, blessed be He, desired to grant merit to Israel; therefore He increased for them Torah and commandments," and not contrary to merit! If someone wishes to use it contrary to merit, he cannot,
because the abundance of Torah and commandments was not given for that!
Here is the place to arouse once again regarding the campaigns of the month of Elul,
as alluded to in the acronym of "Elul" in the three pillars upon which the world stands,
Torah, service, and acts of kindness,
and with the introduction of the service of repentance,
and the matter of the redemption.
And also regarding the preparations for the campaign of "Send portions to one for whom nothing is prepared," which is incumbent upon Rosh Hashanah to provide the needs of the festival for all who need it,
as discussed many times.
There is another matter regarding which we wish to mention a matter that is time-dependent:
Tomorrow, the elections
(by Divine providence,
"everything is foreseen")
for the "neighborhood committee" of this neighborhood will take place.
And although there are limitations as to where one must get involved and where not,
in order not to cause any "trouble," there is nevertheless a matter that I wish to mention
(although I do not involve myself in the matters of the council,
and I do not take part in the elections for whatever reasons there may be).
And although it is connected with a custom of the country, one can nevertheless extract from it a good matter regarding our subject:
It is a custom of the country that one day before the elections, one may engage in propaganda,
campaigning,
in connection with the elections.
Here, others have awakened from sleep,
in order to hear which candidate I am going to support,
and to campaign for him!
The only campaigning that I wish to do for the elections is to arouse everyone that it should be "all your deeds etc. for the sake of Heaven":
both the voters and the elected,
and the various
com
מ
mittees
(the representatives who will conduct the elections tomorrow and will count and announce, etc.)
should act for the sake of Heaven. The voters should vote with the intention for the sake of Heaven;
זאלן טאן לשם שמים. די בוחרים זאלן שטימען מיט די כוונה לשם שמים;
the elected should thereafter fulfill their role for the sake of Heaven. And in general, the elections should be conducted with brotherly love, closeness of hearts, and love of Israel
("and you shall love your neighbor as yourself"),
and in the language of the verse, "He leads me beside still waters,"
and not, Heaven forbid, the opposite of this, etc.,
but specifically with the intention for the sake of Heaven.
As instructed by the Mishnah
(mentioned above)
"all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven,"
all the more so your deeds connected with a multitude,
a neighborhood of Jews.
Another point in this:
Every Jew has his unique portion and unique mission in the world. And in the language of the Mishnah
(which is said for the chapter)
"All of Israel have a portion in the World to Come,"
corresponding to the unique portion that every Jew has in this world,
a unique portion and unique mission in this world that is specifically suited to that person. This was not said in order to detract from a Jew, Heaven forbid,
rather it is said regarding all Jews,
even the righteous and the leaders of Israel,
that "All of Israel have a portion in the World to Come,"
but this is his particular portion and mission in the world,
which is different from the portion of his fellow.
Similarly, regarding the "Neighborhood Committee":
When one goes to vote, one must take into consideration that one should vote
(for the sake of Heaven -)
for the people who are suitable,
for the specific role for which they are being elected:
one is suited
(more than another)
to be a chairman,
one is more suited to be a vice chairman,
one is more suited to be a treasurer,
and so forth.
And one emphasizes thereby that one should vote for the "town elders" in the plural, in accordance with the ruling in the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, Choshen Mishpat, that there must be several town elders
(who have been selected and appointed by the consent of the majority of the community,
"seven town elders,"
or another number that constitutes a plurality,
but not an individual,
and the town elders are like the entire town,
"they stand in place of the entire community, and the entire community in its place is like the Geonim and Nesiim for all of Israel, etc."
And in all this, there is further emphasis from the fact that the elections
take place
מא
in the month of Elul, as is known that "Elul" is an acronym for "I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine" and "
(sending portions)
a man to his fellow and gifts to the poor,"
which further emphasizes the matter of love of Israel.
And yet another emphasis on the matter:
It is known the parable of the Alter Rebbe that in the month of Elul the "king is in the field."
And regarding our matter, the elections, this should further spur on everyone who has the ability in this regard to participate in the elections,
knowing that the king is found "in the field";
וויסנדיק אז דער מלך געפינט זיך "בשדה";
even though I will remain at home, in my room, nevertheless the "king is in the field,"
right there where one goes to vote,
which
(the place of the elections)
is indeed a part of the building.
And therefore there is no place for someone to claim that he is a great person and it is beneath his dignity to go vote, because even if he is a "Yotzei Doffen,"
and is found in the "Holy of Holies,"
nevertheless the "king in the field,"
the king is with him in the place of the elections,
and "anyone who wishes is permitted
(and able)
to go out to greet him, and he receives everyone with a pleasant countenance and shows a smiling face to everyone,"
and one can ask him for all requests, etc.
And all those who wish to extricate themselves from this with excuses that they have better things to do in matters of good and holiness and the fulfillment of the commandments must know that these claims come from the "left side."
Therefore, one now proclaims and announces,
in a holy place,
a place where prayer is magnified and a place where Torah is magnified,
that everyone should go vote for the "Neighborhood Committee,"
and vote for the sake of Heaven
(as above),
knowing that together with him is found the king,
the king in the field,
and to do so that in this "field" one should plant and establish a "Neighborhood Committee" that will lead the neighborhood according to the will of the king, etc., etc.
from
מב
And there is nothing to interpret simplistically in this, because the simple meaning is:
everyone who can should go vote for the "Neighborhood Committee,"
with the intention for the sake of Heaven,
as above.
In addition, one wishes to add another proposal regarding those who conduct the elections:
In accordance with what the Alter Rebbe writes in Likkutei Torah, that "one must increase charity from Rosh Chodesh Elul," one should combine the elections with an increase in charity
[I do not know if this holds up according to the law,
one must arrange that this be in accordance with the law]:
One should take dollars
(not speaking about Shabbos)
from the reminders
(so that there will not be any suspicion that the money comes from one side)
to distribute to all those who will participate in the elections. Not before they vote,
because then it could be interpreted as a bribe,
but only after each one has cast his vote into the box secretly,
in the manner of "walk discreetly with your G-d"
(in this matter it must specifically be "walk discreetly",
not as with other matters,
as discussed above,
which must be done specifically with a storm and commotion etc.),
one should give him the dollar at the outer entrance of the place of elections,
opposite the place of the mezuzah,
and he should give the dollar to charity,
adding from his own.
And great is charity which brings the redemption closer, and this will further hasten that from this "charity the Holy One, blessed be He, performed with Israel who were scattered among the nations",
it shall be, since "all the ends have already passed", the greatest charity,
"Yours, Hashem, is the charity",
that the Almighty takes out every single one from exile,
"a great congregation shall return here",
In the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach.
His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, commanded to play "He will build the Holy Temple". And afterwards he commanded to play "I am a wall",
and in the middle of the melody, His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, stood to his full height and danced in his place.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make an after-blessing,
will certainly make an after-blessing.
