Regarding Shabbos Chazon, it is known what our Rabbis
(in the book of discourses of R. Hillel Paritcher)
bring in the name of the R. Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev –
that "Shabbos Chazon is an expression of a vision, for they show each Jew the future Holy Temple from afar."
That this
(that "they show each Jew the future Holy Temple")
is not merely to "make one feel good" –
but rather it has a practical effect,
as is understood from the parable he gives there:
"A parable: A father had a precious son and made him a precious garment to wear, and because the son was not careful with that garment and did improper deeds, he tore it into many tears. And he made him a second garment, and he also tore it.
What did the father do?
He made him a third garment and did not give it to him to wear, but rather stored it away, and at distant, known intervals he shows him the garment and says to him: See, if you conduct yourself on the straight path, this garment will be given to you to wear, etc.,
and this is the meaning of 'Shabbos Chazon is an expression of a vision, for they show each Jew the future Holy Temple from afar.'"
It follows from this,
that what on Shabbos Chazon "they show each Jew the future Holy Temple" is in order to arouse in Jews a longing for the Holy Temple,
and consequently they will do all that is incumbent upon them to add in "our deeds and our service"2,
Torah and mitzvos –
which nullify the cause of the exile
("because of our sins we were exiled from our land"3),
which brought about "the Three Weeks" and the Nine Days and Tisha B'Av –
and through this bring about the building and revelation of the third Holy Temple down here.
That is,
in addition to that which in all the prayers of every single day we speak about the third Holy Temple and the future redemption
(which also brings out the longing of Jews for the redemption,
and consequently an increase in Torah and mitzvos) –
however, hearing is not like seeing4,
and on Shabbos Chazon "they show each Jew the future Holy Temple",
it adds even more to the longing for the redemption,
and consequently –
to the increase in our deeds and our service in order to bring the redemption.
And the lesson from this is simply –
as is understood from the Torah itself,
and one does not need any additional explanation for this –
that every Jew must increase in the study of Torah and the fulfillment of mitzvos with hiddur in order to receive the third Holy Temple down here in this physical world,
in the true and complete redemption.
Nevertheless,
there is a novelty in this on Shabbos Chazon in each and every year,
as is known that all matters of Torah and mitzvos must constantly be in a manner of "as new"5,
until actually "new"6.
As it is stated in Igeres HaKodesh
(regarding Rosh Hashanah,
and from this it is understood regarding all days of the year)
that in each and every year "a new, higher light descends, such a lofty light that has never shone from the days of the world until now."
However, the novelty is not comparable to a simple novelty that occurs in a particular year. As we see in human nature:
In order to arouse a novelty in someone on Shabbos Chazon
(and the like)
due to the matter that every day it must be "new" –
this requires contemplation and effort, etc.
However, when an actual novelty occurs,
then one sees the novelty simply. Therefore we see that in all matters of Torah and mitzvos, from time to time an actual novelty occurs,
which demands new actions.
And in our matter:
In general, the novelty from year to year is due to the determination of the year.
Shabbos Chazon always occurs on Shabbos of Parshas Eileh HaDevarim. In this there is no novelty from year to year,
except for the novelty of "they shall be as new in your eyes every day" and of the new light that descends each year.
However, there is a change and novelty from year to year due to the determination of Shabbos within the days of the month
(in our case –
Menachem Av),
and consequently –
in the Torah portions connected with the days of the month,
and consequently also in the Torah portions connected with the days of the year.
And in addition to this, there is a novelty in this year, which is a leap year:
a) Because it is a leap year, there is certainly a novelty and change in the Torah portions connected with the days of the year
(in addition to the novelty due to the determination within the days of the month).
b) The very concept of a leap year is a novelty. Moreover:
In a leap year, the novelty is prominent relative to the previous year and the following year –
because a regular year can occur adjacent to another regular year;
ווייל א שנה פשוטה קען אויסקומען בסמיכות צו נאך א שנה פשוטה;
however, a leap year always occurs between two regular years,
consequently it is always a novelty relative to the previous year and the following year.
The lesson from a leap year is simply,
even for one who does not know what he is saying:
The novelty of a leap year simply is –
that then an entire month is added to the year,
and this causes that the entire year should be a "complete year"8. A simple person immediately understands,
that when an addition in time comes to him,
and it becomes a "complete year",
and I was created only to serve my Maker9,
he must utilize it for an addition in the service of Hashem,
to serve his Maker.
From this is understood the additional instruction that comes in Shabbos Chazon
(regarding the previous year and the following year)
by virtue of the novelty that this is in a leap year –
that the addition in Torah and mitzvos that every Shabbos Chazon must bring about
(in order to bring down the third Beis HaMikdash),
is with greater strength and vigor in this year,
being a leap year.
And to add,
since a leap year indicates an addition in all matters of the year,
it is understood that in this year there also comes an addition in the descent of the time of exile,
and of the Three Weeks and the Nine Days. The additional descent must bring about an additional ascent through an addition in our deeds and our service.
And the main thing is the deed10
And with emphasis in these times –
because the destruction and the descent of the exile primarily affected actual deed
(as discussed in the farbrengen of the previous Shabbos11),
that now one cannot offer physical sacrifices in actual deed and the like in the physical Beis HaMikdash,
unlike in spiritual service, which we also have now through "and we will render [the words of] our lips instead of bullocks"12,
and our Sages said, prayers were instituted corresponding to the daily offerings13. Even though "venashleimah" is from the term completion14
(as discussed many times),
it does not, however, reach the completion of offering physical sacrifices in the Beis HaMikdash.
And also regarding prayer itself
(which is in speech and thought)
15 it is understood that it was more complete in the time of the Temple when, in addition, there was also –
the combination with the matter of actual deed in the offering of the sacrifices in the Beis HaMikdash,
unlike now,
when we have only the matter of thought and speech without the matter of deed15.
And this is similar to and analogous to the difference even now between a prayer in a "miniature sanctuary"16
(synagogue)
17 compared to a prayer outside the synagogue18.
And regarding the practical:
During the Three Weeks in general,
and in particular –
beginning from Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av,
and in the most particular –
from the Shabbos before Tishah B'Av
(from which all the days are blessed19,
also Tishah B'Av,
until the main blessing that it will be turned into joy and gladness and festive days20),
this is called Shabbos Chazon.
On which "they show everyone the future Holy Temple" in order to arouse a longing for it,
and consequently –
an addition in Torah and mitzvos,
and especially in this year,
a leap year,
which emphasizes even more the addition in Torah and mitzvos –
one must add in a manner of "double for wisdom"21
(since the descent is in a manner of double22)
in our deeds and our service,
Torah and mitzvos,
which weaken and nullify the cause of the exile
("because of our sins").
And especially in those matters that are particularly connected with the redemption –
beginning from the matter that is said at the conclusion of the haftarah of Shabbos Chazon "Zion shall be redeemed through justice and her captives through charity"23:
"Justice"24 –
the matter of Torah study,
and particularly the laws of the Torah
("halachta"25),
and charity,
"the totality of the mitzvos which are called charity"26.
Including also the matter of love of Israel and unity of Israel,
which nullify the cause of the exile
(baseless hatred)27.
And all this must be done with joy and a good heart.
And for this one has special power from the fact that it is the day of Shabbos in general,
about which "on your joyous occasions – these are the Shabbosos"<sup>28</sup>;
וואס "ביום שמחתכם אלו השבתות" 28;
and from it all the days are blessed,
and if from it the following days are blessed,
then all the more so and certainly that Shabbos itself has an additional blessing,
because it is contrary to reason to say that in order to receive the blessing of Shabbos one must wait until after Havdalah,
but Shabbos itself does not have it, Heaven forbid,
rather certainly Shabbos itself has a blessing,
all the more so and certainly.
And particularly Shabbos Chazon,
when "they show everyone the future Holy Temple";
ווען "מראין לכאו"א המקדש דלעתיד";
and from it all the days are blessed, including also the day of Tishah B'Av,
until the main blessing that it will be turned into joy and gladness and festive days –
it is certain that Shabbos itself contains the blessing.
And in particular, then, already on this Shabbat there is the power for double consolation
(which comes after the opposite side in double) 22 –
because during the Minchah prayer of this Shabbat, we already read from Parshat Va'etchanan
(a free gift 29),
whose conclusion and seal –
in the Haftarah –
is "Comfort, comfort My people" 30,
double consolation 22.
And especially through connecting it with a Chassidic farbrengen on this Shabbat
(Shabbat Chazon),
which is a matter of love and unity of Israel
(which nullifies the cause of the exile,
as above),
as is known the "note that descended from heaven" regarding the greatness of the matter of a farbrengen 31.
And the farbrengen is connected with physicality,
with joy of the body
(all the more so joy of the soul),
and especially of the bodies of Israel, for "their bodies are holy" 32,
through saying "L'Chaim" over wine that gladdens God and men 33.
And this occurs on Shabbat itself –
at the time of Ratzon d'Ratzin,
connected with "an inheritance without boundaries...
like Yaakov, of whom it is written 34 'and you shall spread forth'" 35.
May it be His will that through the increase in "justice" and "righteousness" and all of our deeds and service, and out of joy and goodness of heart –
there will be joy that breaks the boundary 36,
and this itself in a manner of "and you shall spread forth" –
and in the language of the verse 37:
"a breach you have made for yourself, a breach",
breach upon breach,
breaking through doubly for salvation,
and double consolation,
until the perfection of this –
"and everlasting joy upon their heads" 38 –
in the future redemption
(the third)
and the third Holy Temple,
which are in a manner of double for salvation
(as discussed many times),
and Moshe and Aharon with them 39,
the first redeemer
(Moshe Rabbeinu)
is the final redeemer 40,
David Melech HaMashiach,
In addition to the practices that are stated in the Shulchan Aruch and books
(books of Chassidut and Mussar)
regarding the special conduct during the Three Weeks and the Nine Days etc. –
there is an explicit verse in the Written Torah,
at the conclusion and seal of the Haftarah of Shabbat Chazon:
"Zion shall be redeemed through justice and her captives through righteousness"
(as above, section 3).
The connection of this verse to Shabbat Chazon is further emphasized by the fact that many maamarim of Shabbat Chazon of our Nesi'im begin with this opening phrase
("Zion shall be redeemed through justice and her captives through righteousness") 41.
A parenthetical remark:
Although from the Nasi of our generation we do not find maamarim with this opening phrase
("Zion shall be redeemed etc.") –
it can be said,
that this is in accordance with the well-known principle 42 that each Nasi had his maamar that he would repeat every two or three years,
and accordingly it can be said that there are also differences among the Nesi'im regarding the openings of all their maamarim:
There are openings of maamarim that with one Nasi were many times,
and with a second Nasi there were only a minority of maamarim with that opening phrase.
Not only regarding the openings of maamarim which are seemingly obligatory –
like the opening phrase "The heavens are My throne" or "And it shall be from month to month, on Shabbat Rosh Chodesh" and the like –
but as we see regarding other openings of maamarim
(where it is not obligatory that there be a specific opening phrase)
that with one Nasi they are found many times, unlike with a second Nasi there are only a minority of maamarim with that opening phrase
(from which it is understood that also the maamarim with the opening phrase "The heavens are My throne" on Shabbat Rosh Chodesh are not due to necessity etc.).
This was said as a parenthetical remark,
because regarding our subject we need not come to this,
for the verse "Zion shall be redeemed through justice and her captives through righteousness" has a connection to Shabbat Chazon for all Jews without exception,
as they all hear the Haftarah with its blessings before and after.
From this it is understood that in these days of the Three Weeks,
and especially the Nine Days,
and the week in which Tisha B'Av falls –
there must be a special increase in "justice" and "righteousness"
(and specifically in this order,
as the order in the verse,
for order in the Torah is also an instruction 43 –
first "justice" then "righteousness"),
which bring the redemption from exile and captivity.
And the explanation:
"Justice" refers to the matter of Torah study,
and within this itself –
the section of the laws of the Torah.
And simply:
The general concept of justice,
"to place every matter in its proper place as it should be" 44,
to know the deed that should be done and that which should not be done,
is through the law of the Torah,
for the law instructs how one must conduct oneself in practice.
Not like the part of pilpul in Torah,
where there are reasons on this side and that side and "these and those are the words of the living G-d"45,
where then one cannot have a "judgment" of how one must conduct oneself in practice,
but "judgment" is a decided halachah,
halachah for practice in this physical world,
which can be only in one manner,
according to one opinion
("and Hashem was with him –
that the halachah is like him in every place"46 (not only in this place,
but in every place),
which is above "these and those are the words of the living G-d".
In the spiritual worlds above one can conduct oneself according to both opinions,
because in one moment one can find oneself in the chamber of Hillel
(for example)
and in a second moment in the chamber of Shammai,
and in the place of47
(the chamber)
of Hillel one must conduct oneself like Hillel and in the place of Shammai one must conduct oneself like Shammai;
דהלל דארף מען זיך פירן ווי הלל ובאתרי' דשמאי דארף מען זיך פירן ווי שמאי;
but in this physical world,
where one can conduct oneself,
in actual deed,
only in one manner,
the halachah must be specifically in one manner,
in the matter at hand
(in the dispute of Shammai and Hillel) –
"the halachah is like the House of Hillel"48.
This does not mean that one diminishes the second opinion,
because "these and those are the words of the living G-d",
and on the contrary –
"Why did the House of Hillel merit that the halachah be established like them? Because they were pleasant and humble, and they would study their own words and the words of the House of Shammai,
and not only that, but they would give precedence to the words of the House of Shammai over their own words"49.
[In this statement of our Sages one must understand:
From the fact that the House of Hillel "would give precedence to the words of the House of Shammai over their own words" it simply follows that the House of Hillel held in the truth of the matters that the words of the House of Shammai have precedence in merit over their own words (because Heaven forbid that they did it in order that the halachic ruling should be according to their words),
because they certainly knew that order in Torah is also Torah.
Thus the question arises:
Since the House of Hillel themselves held that the words of the House of Shammai have precedence over their own words –
why is the halachah indeed like the House of Hillel
("because they were pleasant and humble"),
halachah in Torah is seemingly dependent on knowledge of Torah, not on any other thing?!
And one can explain the matter –
based on the known principle that even though according to the law the halachah is in a certain manner,
sometimes one says that another thing overrides it. For example:
a positive commandment overrides a negative commandment<sup>50</sup>;
עשה דוחה לא תעשה 50;
danger to life overrides the entire Torah51,
a great loss overrides something that would not be overridden if it were only a small loss52.
And so forth.
Based on this one can say that even though the House of Hillel "would give precedence to the words of the House of Shammai over their own words" because according to the truth of the matters the House of Hillel held that the words of the House of Shammai have precedence in merit over their own words,
and accordingly the halachah should indeed have been like the House of Shammai.
But "because they were pleasant and humble" this overrides the opinion of the House of Shammai and the halachah is like the House of Hillel.
How can there be a dispute in reality,
that the House of Hillel should hold that the halachah is like the House of Shammai and in truth the halachah should be like the House of Hillel?
As in the above example –
danger to life overrides the entire Torah:
if there is danger to life,
then this ab initio overrides the entire Torah,
so how can there be a reasoning
(on the part of the House of Hillel)
that the words of the House of Shammai have precedence over their own words?
So the explanation in this is,
that in danger to life itself there are levels:
what is considered danger to life for one may not be considered danger to life for another.
For one it can be danger to life if he does not have fatty meat and aged wine,
even though for another this is not danger to life53.
In practical terms, from this one derives,
incidentally,
a wonderful lesson:
halachah like him is not achieved through his greatness in knowledge of Torah,
but rather through his greatness in good character traits,
"because they were pleasant and humble"!].
And regarding our matter:
Standing in the days when the descent into exile is emphasized,
there must be an increase with greater vigor and greater strength in "
(Zion)
with judgment
(you shall redeem and return)
with charity":
"With judgment" –
the study of Torah in general,
and especially –
the study of the section of halachos in Torah
("judgment").
As we see particularly in a Chassidic education,
that in addition to the fact that the study must be in the manner of "may the Torah be magnified and glorified"54,
one emphasizes especially the study of halachos,
to bring the discussion to the conclusion of the halachah55,
to know what one should do and what one should not do,
as explained in Kuntres Etz HaChayim56
[or "Etz Chayim",
as it is sometimes called,
as is known the variant readings in this57].
"With charity" –
an increase in giving charity beyond the regular amounts in charity.
[Here was spoken a special instruction regarding the above matter (increase in Torah study,
"judgment") for the students of the yeshivos,
and particularly of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim,
and the conducting of "examinations" etc. –
was considered by the Rebbe shlita and published separately.
And in continuation of the matter he said:]
And contrary to the opinion of those who err that the main thing is the Rosh Yeshiva and the administration of the yeshiva,
and because of them the yeshiva students exist.
That is, since there is a great Rosh Yeshiva,
therefore one must have students who will go learn by him –
but just the opposite:
The Rosh Yeshiva and the administration of the yeshiva are for the sake of the yeshiva students!
And even though in the world it is the opposite –
it is nevertheless known58 that the world is “like a seal that is reversed” relative to matters as they are in holiness and Torah:
In the world the yeshiva students are secondary to the administration of the yeshiva
(but also in the world it is –
“from my students more than from all of them”59),
a reversed seal of the true reality,
that the administration is for the sake and benefit of the yeshiva students,
and their entire purpose is so that the students can learn Torah with diligence and devotion,
therefore they need for this to have a Rosh Yeshiva and an administration in general.
Therefore the yeshiva students must go demand from the administration of the yeshiva
(whose role is for the sake and benefit of the yeshiva students)
that they want to have
(during the summer time)
a Rosh Yeshiva,
and examinations etc.
As discussed above
(in the aforementioned talk)
the advantage of examinations,
that this itself will add vigor and vitality in the study of Torah.
Obviously in its simple sense. And as also explained in the Hemshech of 5666.
And with an introduction:
There are those who, when one tells them a verse in Chumash,
it is not enough for them until they hear that it is written thus in Rashi.
Then there are others for whom it is not enough until they hear that it is written thus in the Oral Torah.
Until there are those for whom it is also not enough until they hear that it is written thus in the Hemshech of 5672!
It may be written in Shulchan Aruch,
but his concern –
he holds –
is to conduct himself as it is written in the Hemshech of 5672!
The advantage of an actual examination is also in the Hemshech of 566660
(and regarding this in the Hemshech of 5672):
When one is set for an actual examination,
that according to how he rules one will need to conduct oneself in actual practice in this physical world,
he himself or another –
he then learns the matter incomparably differently knowing that one will conduct oneself in actual practice according to how he answers!
And regarding this the advantage of making examinations for the yeshiva students on what they have learned is understood,
for the matter of an examination is a matter of actual deed –
an examination of the student’s knowledge
(which also in the part of give-and-take in Torah the knowledge in this is a matter of actual deed,
all the more so in the part of the laws in Torah,
for a law itself is a matter of actual deed in Torah).
He argues –
where has it been heard in the customs of Israel that one must make “examinations”,
it was not the custom of our forefathers in former times overseas?!
In former times, however, they also did not read a “paper”,
and certainly not every day! Not even once a week! They did not know in the yeshiva about the entire existence of a newspaper!
But now,
not only does one know about it,
but it can even be that he cannot get through the day without reading the “paper”,
and seeing whether his “stocks”
(for example)
have gone up!
It has become a custom in this country,
that parents who worry about their bar-mitzvah boy what will be when he becomes twice bar-mitzvah? buy him for his bar-mitzvah
(among other gifts)
“stocks”,
so that he should be secure when he gets older,
and therefore he will be able to study Torah now with tranquility!
Therefore –
argues the student –
he needs to read the newspaper to see whether his “stocks” have gone up,
then he can study Torah with joy and a good heart!
What does it matter to you now whether the “stocks” went up or not? Your parents provide you with all your needs anyway and you can study Torah with tranquility without any worries of livelihood, as is known the explanation of the Sages’ statement61 “The Torah was only given to those who eat the manna” –
for seemingly there is the matter of Torah study also after the cessation of the descent of the manna –
that proper Torah study is when the Torah student is in a state and condition of “those who eat the manna”,
and has no worries of livelihood from worldly matters etc.,
because he receives all his needs ready-made*61]!
Nevertheless,
he argues,
as long as he does not know whether his "stocks" have gone up,
it disturbs his peace of mind and he cannot learn,
therefore he must first read the newspaper about his "stocks" and only then can he go learn...
Chassidus!
Such is the reality!...
Just because there is a gentile non-Jew in the street who reads the newspaper –
must you,
a yeshiva student,
also read a newspaper?!
He answers,
that he does not want to be an idler! What concern is it of yours if he is an idler –
as long as you learn Torah and you influence that non-Jew for the good?!
Thus, when there is a descent into the exile –
there must also come an increase in Torah study,
and "aspects" that provide vigor and vitality in Torah study,
even though in previous generations this was not the case.
And even though in previous years this also was not the case –
nevertheless, when there comes an increase in the opposite of blessing
(and the strength of the evil inclination)
which each day is greater than the previous62,
there must also come an increase in blessing,
including also through the aforementioned increase.
And a student who will want to learn superficially and will want to extricate himself from it,
with a claim that he is on a mission,
he is involved in campaigns,
in charity and the like –
let him know,
that this is not merely a side matter,
and it does not pertain only to his class and to his yeshiva and to the supporters of the yeshiva
(as discussed above –
in the aforementioned talk),
rather it pertains to his very essence:
if he extricates himself from it –
he becomes separated from his very essence,
for his very essence is Torah!
A yeshiva student eats and drinks and sleeps,
and gives charity and goes on campaigns –
but all these are additional things upon his very essence;
אבער דאס איז אלץ דברים נוספים אויף זיין עצם מציאות;
his very essence is Torah. And when he does not learn Torah –
he becomes separated from himself, heaven forfend!...
And since he is separated –
he shouts that the other is separated,
separated from his source,
from his mission, etc. –
for whoever disqualifies, disqualifies with his own blemish162
His evil inclination persuades him that instead of learning Torah
(which is the essence of a yeshiva student)
he should take time away and go disqualify another,
so why should he seek a blemish somewhere else,
when he can find it in himself:
since he himself is separated from his essence,
he disqualifies others with his blemish and shouts that they are separated!
Among Chassidim there never was such an expression "separated";
בא חסידים איז קיינמאל ניט געווען אזא אויסשפראך "נפרד";
they knew about the concept of connection and inwardness, etc.,
but there was no such word "separated".
When, however, someone became separated from his essence,
and he goes to disqualify another –
he disqualifies him with his blemish;
פסל'ט ער אים במומו;
but he needs a name in the Holy Tongue for this,
which brings into being and sustains and maintains the thing
(according to the Baal Shem Tov) –
he found a word:
"separated"!
The yeshiva students must sit and learn Torah. They have nothing else to do. So instead,
they go around and cause neglect of Torah,
and with what? By accusing this one and that one that they are separated!
Until they have dragged in even householders:
since there is a householder who is lazy and does not want to learn Torah and engage in spreading the wellsprings,
he found an invention of what to do:
there is liveliness in the town,
joy and gladness –
he goes around day and night and shouts,
how can it be that there are those who call others separated?!
If you want to help them –
say a chapter of Tehillim to them,
from "Sweet singer of Israel"63,
you will accomplish two things:
one thing,
you say Tehillim,
and furthermore you will not do anything that should not be done. And no one will have any claims against you,
because you are doing a good deed –
saying Tehillim;
זאגסט תהלים;
but why do you waste time,
day and night,
and confuse yourself and confuse others with this, that there are those who call others separated?!
And then they dragged me into this. Why did they drag me into this? Is it my business to urge yeshiva students that they need to learn?!
You have a complaint –
go to the Mara d'Asra and ask him the question,
but why drag me into this?!
And upon what is the matter of the "separated ones" based –
upon what I spoke!...
Do you want to repeat my words? Repeat my words about learning Torah and giving charity!
What did he choose to repeat? Specifically those words where one spoke about these matters.
And then they made a list from it,
which from beginning to end speaks only about that matter!
The explanation in Rashi –
does not concern him;
איז אים ניט נוגע;
the Rambam that was discussed –
does not concern him;
איז אים ניט נוגע;
the matter that was discussed about the spreading of the wellsprings –
does not concern him;
איז אים ניט נוגע;
The only thing he takes out of the farbrengen is –
this very sicha!
And he is precise in it in every word and interprets whether one meant this or that,
and then he has complaints that such and such a word is missing.
Then they will be precise in what I have just said,
that this is in the list and this is not in the list –
consequently, the impression is also a "separated one"! And then I am also guilty in this! Until the entire world are "separated ones"!...
And there is no need to elaborate on this,
because then a few more lines will be added to the list.
One will only add the explanation in the term "separated one" –
in the manner of wit,
or perhaps not in the manner of wit:
The root of "separated one" is indeed "pered". It is explained in the Zohar63 that "pered" is an acronym for Pshat, Remez, Drush.
That is, when one has Pshat, Remez, Drush of the Torah but the Samech of the part of Sod of the Torah is missing –
then instead of "Pardes"
(acronym for Pshat, Remez, Drush, Sod)
one has then "Pered",
(as it says in Tehillim64)
"like a mule"65.
That is, when one adds the Samech of Sod, it becomes an entirely different reality,
a different species:
instead of "pered",
of the animal species,
it becomes "pardes" of the plant species.
When one adds, however, a Nun
(instead of a Samech corresponding to Sod)
to the word "pered"
("separated one") –
it does not become a new reality,
rather the "pered" itself then relates to the person,
that this person is a "pered"!
And to add explanation in this according to that which the letter Nun comes between the letter Mem and the letter Samech:
It is explained in many places66 that Mem and Samech are two distinct levels,
"the Mem and Samech in the Tablets stood miraculously"67,
Sometimes it is explained that the Mem is higher than the Samech,
as explained in many places68 regarding the three forms in the giving of the terumah,
Alef Mem Mem,
Alef Mem Nun
(the intermediate measure)69,
and Alef Mem Samech:
Alef Mem Mem is the matter of Torah,
as it is said about this70 that "terumah" is the letters "Torah Mem",
because the Torah was given after forty days
(the Mem of the Tablets).
Alef Mem Nun refers to the fifty gates of understanding. And Alef Mem Samech refers to a lower level in Torah
(the Samech of the Tablets);
(סמ"ך שבלוחות);
But according to what is explained in many places71 that there is a concept of a circle
(Samech)
within a square
(closed Mem)
and a square within a circle,
that is, sometimes the aspect of Mem is higher than the aspect of Samech and sometimes the aspect of Samech is higher than the aspect of Mem –
one can also say in our matter,
that there is an order from below upward,
Alef Mem Mem, Alef Mem Nun,
Alef Mem Samech
(so that Alef Mem Samech is the highest level).
And in particular –
Mem is the aspect of the revealed part of Torah and Samech
(acronym for Sod) –
the inner dimension of Torah.
Thus, this is also expressed in the form of the letters:
The form of the letter Mem is like a square,
which consists of four lines that form a square,
which has a bottom line upon which the entire square stands and holds itself.
In contrast, a Samech is a circle,
it has no foundation below upon which it stands,
rather immediately when one gives it a push,
even if it is a small circle, it rolls endlessly
(unless one places something underneath to stop the circle).
And one can connect this with what is explained in many places72 that a circle has no beginning or end,
because it is from the aspect of the Infinite.
And in between comes the letter Nun.
That is, one is between the aspect of Mem
(the revealed part of Torah)
and the aspect of Samech
(Sod).
It turns out,
that when one is still at the level of Nun,
before the Samech of Sod
(and one has only Pshat, Remez, Drush) –
one is in the state of "Nifrad",
Nun-Parad;
נ' פרד;
when one also has the Samech of Sod,
the study of the inner dimension of the Torah –
it becomes "Pardes".
And regarding our matter:
Before one accuses another that he is a Nifrad from his source and from his mission,
the mission of the Nasi of our generation –
one must take a good look at oneself whether one is not oneself a Nifrad,
for whoever disqualifies, disqualifies with his own blemish.
One does not intend to bother anyone,
one does not intend to touch anyone. The intention is only the good side,
that the students of the yeshiva should utilize the time to increase in Torah study,
and to examine themselves etc.
And especially the students of Tomchei Temimim Yeshiva,
where the Nasi of our generation was the active director,
and he appointed the Rosh Yeshiva and the Mashpia and the director.
And may it be His will that the resolution in the matter itself should immediately bring the reward73 –
that these days should be turned into joy and gladness and festive days,
and one should merit the Torah of the Great Sanhedrin in the Chamber of Hewn Stone in the Third Beis HaMikdash,
until the study of the Torah of Moshiach from the mouth of Moshiach,
that Moshiach will teach the entire people Torah74,
And they shall awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust75 and all the Roshei Yeshiva among them,
until the first Rosh Yeshiva –
Moshe Rabbeinu,
Moshe and Aharon with them,
in the true and complete redemption,
and in simple literalness,
speedily in our days, literally.
Maamar (similar to a sicha)
beginning "Tziyon bamishpat tipadeh veshaveha bitzdakah".
Continuing from what was discussed above –
one wishes to add two matters:
No one should interpret any interpretations,
that one meant this one and that one,
and intended to give this one a medal,
and to deny another etc. etc.
If I want to give someone a medal or the opposite of it, G-d forbid –
I myself know the address of this and that Jew to whom I need to give it,
and I do not need to trouble a Ben Melech for this –
for every Jew is a Ben Melech76 up to a King Himself
(as it states in Tikkunei Zohar77),
even if he is a "Nifrad"
(in their language)!
And consequently,
as mentioned,
no one needs to become my messenger for these matters,
I can do it myself. And if I do not do it –
it is a proof that it does not need to be done.
Afterwards, they will make interpretations in the matter itself,
and there is no end to the matter –
therefore I need to forewarn this,
for granted, that which that person thereby nullifies Torah,
that is his own matter,
but since through this they also drag me into it,
because if I had not spoken about this,
the entire thing would not have been,
and I will have to give a reckoning for this –
therefore I now make a declaration
(as it states regarding this the expression78,
that there is a declaration in the singular,
afterwards there is a declaration in the plural and afterwards there is a declaration until the end of all generations),
that I nullify from now and onward all declarations and interpretations in this etc. that I have said from now and forever,
until the end of all generations.
A second matter is regarding the aforementioned addition on the subject of "Tziyon bamishpat tipadeh veshaveha bitzdakah":
Earlier it was discussed how the matter needs to be especially among the students of the yeshiva.
Afterwards, however, the question may arise –
what about those who have already left the yeshiva –
the fathers and the mothers,
grandmothers and grandfathers,
uncles and aunts etc.,
and those who have not yet entered the yeshiva –
for they are the majority
(at least in quantity),
and the Torah speaks of the majority79.
Therefore, one also proposes regarding all Jews –
that there should also be an increase in "Mishpat" and "Tzedakah",
and with "aspects",
founded upon the words of the Sages in their Mishnah *79 "Make for yourself a Rav".
[The sicha on this matter and on the matter of "Make for yourself a Rav" –
was reviewed by the Rebbe shlita and published separately.
And at the conclusion of the matter, he requested that these things be publicized in every place,
and in a speedy and urgent manner:]
The Rebbe, the father-in-law, had broad shoulders,
more than was estimated,
but what was known was enough.
Nevertheless, there was once a case
where someone sent his father-in-law a letter "special delivery"
(express urgent).
His father-in-law told him –
he presumably also answered his question –
that in his opinion, as he saw from the question, he should not have sent an express urgent letter,
and it is a waste of Jewish money,
the Torah spares the money of Israel80,
since sending an express urgent letter costs.
Even though that person
(the writer of the letter)
certainly had no lack of the few extra cents
(as it was then,
not like the prices today)
in order to receive an answer from the leader of the generation and conduct himself according to that answer –
nevertheless his father-in-law told him this,
because in a case where one need not spend the extra money,
one spares the money of Israel,
even for a single prutah,
for even a prutah can purchase a person's life80,
or be used for another matter in spreading the wellsprings.
In what case is this said? When the express urgent adds nothing;
במה דברים אמורים ווען דער מהיר דחוף גיט גארניט צו;
but if it adds something to the matter,
and even if there is a doubt or a doubt of a doubt about it,
as is the case here –
then one must certainly do it in an express urgent manner.
And simply –
I ask with a heartfelt request
[the public is already accustomed to this expression,
but I have no choice,
I currently have no better expression]
that they should convey in every place in an express urgent manner
(even if it costs more money)
regarding the matter of "make for yourself a rav".
This does not mean that immediately after Havdalah everyone should run to the airport and take an airplane to every place in the world,
and specifically the fastest airplane,
to convey about this!...
We are not speaking about conduct of chaos,
for we are in the world of rectification,
but there too there are broken vessels that still need to be rectified,
but one must conduct oneself in a manner of rectification,
and there are many other ways to convey and publicize it in every place in an express urgent manner without it costing as much as traveling by airplanes.
And may it be His will that from this we merit speedily, literally, the perfection in "make for yourself a rav" –
Mashiach our righteousness,
who will teach the entire nation Torah,
even though then it will also be "they shall all know Me, from their smallest to their greatest"81,
as explained in the Sefer HaMitzvot of the Tzemach Tzedek, the mitzvah of appointing a king, that Mashiach will be a "king" and a "rav".
In the true and complete redemption,
"with our youths and with our elders, with our sons and with our daughters"82,
and we will all go to our holy land,
to Jerusalem the holy city
[which is called in many places the Sanctuary83),
to the Sanctuary, Hashem, Your hands established84,
the eternal House85,
and simply,
speedily in our days, literally.
In order to frighten the evil inclination,
one must also have a threat that will frighten it
(in addition to the promise of reward if one fulfills it).
Therefore I am now threatening,
that it is not taken for granted that when someone writes me a note with a question and the like –
I will ask him,
either before the answer or after it,
whom he has chosen for his "make for yourself a rav"!
And may it be His will that the threat itself already help, and that one choose a "rav" and inform about it,
unless one is among those who walk discreetly.
In any case –
this does not pertain to informing me about it,
rather the main thing is that one should actually do the matter itself.
In a farbrengen of Shabbat it is also customary to dwell on a verse in our parshah together with Rashi's commentary;
אין א התוועדות פון שבת איז אויך רגיל אפצושטעלן זיך אויף א פסוק בפרשתנו צוזאמען מיט פירוש רש"י;
a matter in the notes of my father on the Zohar of our parshah;
אן ענין אין דיי הערות פון טאטן אויפן זהר דפרשתנו;
a matter in today's Rambam lesson:
in the days of the Three Weeks –
a matter in the laws of the Chosen House of the Rambam;
אן ענין אין הלכות בית הבחירה להרמב"ם;
and in the summer Shabbatot –
a matter in Pirkei Avot of that Shabbat.
In our parshah there is a wondrous Rashi where Rashi brings down names
(as discussed in the previous farbrengen86 the precision in this):
On the verse (chapter 1 verse 13)
"Provide for yourselves men who are wise, understanding, and known
[wisdom, understanding, knowledge)
to your tribes" Rashi explains:
"Wise –
desired,
understanding –
who understand one thing from another,
(then Rashi continues:)
This is what Arius asked Rabbi Yossi: What is the difference between the wise and the understanding?
(Rabbi Yossi answered him)
A wise person is like a wealthy money-changer: when they bring him coins to examine, he examines; but when they do not bring him, he sits and is bewildered.
An understanding person is like a merchant money-changer: when they bring him money to examine, he examines; but when they do not bring him, he goes around and brings from his own."
One must understand:
A) Why did Rashi need to add the parable of Rabbi Yossi
(of a wealthy money-changer and a merchant money-changer)
in explaining the difference between "wise" and "understanding",
for a parable proves that without the parable one would not understand the matter –
seemingly nothing is lacking after Rashi explains "wise – desired,
understanding – who understand one thing from another"?!
And especially since the parable speaks about matters that seemingly are entirely irrelevant to the explanation of the matter,
such as –
the detail that a "wealthy money-changer etc. when they do not bring him
(coins)
sits and is bewildered" –
what is the relevance that he "sits and is bewildered"?!
[From this there is incidentally a lesson regarding one who has money,
and thinks that he does not need to go seek to help others,
but rather he can wait until others come to him and knock on the door –
then he will give to them;
דעמולט וועט ער זיי געבן;
and if they do not come,
he has nothing to do and sits and bothers himself –
"sits and is bewildered" –
which is sometimes worse than doing an undesirable thing...].
B) Moreover:
If one must have the parable,
Rashi should have written it the first time in the Chumash where this appears and where he explains the difference between wisdom and understanding –
in the portion of Melachat HaMishkan87,
"And I have filled him with the spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, and with knowledge."
And Rashi explains:
"With wisdom –
what a person hears from others and learns,
and with understanding –
understands a thing from his heart out of the things he learned"?
C) Moreover:
The entire parable of a wealthy money-changer and a merchant money-changer seemingly has no connection to the difference between "wise" and "understanding",
"desired" and "who understand one thing from another"!
Furthermore:
This speaks about three entirely separate matters,
which seemingly have no connection between them:
"Wise – desired" is one thing,
that wise people are those whom others desire to have dealings with,
meet with them,
hear advice from them etc.
(One cannot say that Rashi relies on the Siftei Chachamim to explain to the five-year-old studying Scripture the meaning of "desired" –
rather when Rashi says "desired" the five-year-old studying Scripture already understands that this is from the term "nichsof nichsafta"88,
that wise people are those whom others desire to have dealings with);
אז חכמים זיינען אזוינע צו וועמען אנדערע גלוסטן צו האבן מיט זיי צו טאן);
"Understanding,
who understand one thing from another" is a second thing;
מבינים דבר מתוך דבר" איז א צווייטע זאך;
and the difference between a wealthy money-changer
(who "when they do not bring him sits and is bewildered")
and a merchant money-changer
(who "when they do not bring him goes around and brings from his own")
is a third thing!
D) If Rashi must give a parable –
why does Rashi bring the names of Arius and Rabbi Yossi –
what does this add to the plain meaning of Scripture?
And as will be explained below.
Based on the known principle that everything is by Divine Providence
(all the more so in Torah) –
one sees that the matter of wisdom and understanding
("wise and understanding")
in our portion –
also appears in the notes of my father connected to our portion,
in the chapter of Avot of this Shabbat,
in the daily study of the Rambam,
and in the laws of Beit HaBechirah –
as follows.
From my father there are no notes on today's portion in the Zohar. But in his notes on tractate Middot89 he explains a verse in our portion90 "Yair ben Menashe took all the region of Argov":
"Yair is from the term light etc.,
Regov is etc. from Mazal and Nakeh etc.,
Regov its numerical value and Nakeh etc.,
and it is on the other side of the Jordan corresponding to the aspect of on the other side of the river
(for the Jordan is a river),
the river is Binah,
and the other side of the river is the Mazal and Nakeh from which Binah draws."
It follows that "Yair etc. took all the region of Argov" corresponds to wisdom and understanding:
"Yair" from the term light is the aspect of wisdom,
as is known that light is the aspect of wisdom91,
and "Argov" is the aspect of understanding.
And as will be explained below the matter in this.
In the current chapter
(the second chapter)
we learn92 about the five students of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai,
and among them was Rabbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus,
whose praise is "a plastered cistern that loses not a drop",
and Rabbi Elazar ben Arach whose praise is "like a flowing spring".
And this is the difference between Chochmah and Binah:
"A plastered cistern that loses not a drop" is the aspect of Chochmah. And "like a flowing spring" is the aspect of Binah,
understanding one thing from another,
he does not innovate a new matter,
rather the m,
the aspect of Chochmah,
and the spring is "flowing" –
understanding one thing from another.
And as will be explained below.
In the Rambam, Laws of the Chosen House, one does not pay attention
(in the manner of "they turned to Me their back and not their face"93)
to a wondrous matter:
The Laws of the Chosen House consists of eight chapters. And this corresponds to the eight days from Rosh Chodesh Av until the eve of Tishah B'Av
(until midday)
when one must specifically study
(according to the suggestion that was spoken about many times)
the Laws of the Chosen House –
one chapter each day!
(But on Tishah B'Av one does not study it)!
It turns out that on this day,
the fourth of Menachem Av,
one studies the fourth chapter. And there one also finds the matter of Chochmah and Binah –
at the beginning and end of the fourth chapter. And as will be explained below.
So too in today's lesson of Rambam, Laws of the Entrance into the Sanctuary –
one should also connect it to the matter of Chochmah and Binah,
and as will be explained below.
[Here he spoke about the establishment of Chabad Houses in every place –
it was published in the aforementioned corrected talk.
And in continuation of this he said:]
Just as there is someone who provided drink in connection with the Chanukat HaBayit of a "Chabad House" –
let him now go up and say "L'Chaim",
and afterwards include those assembled here by distributing a portion of the drink,
and the rest –
at the Chanukat HaBayit in its place.
Another matter that I want to mention:
In connection with the undesirable thing that happened in a private place and in a private home
(not in this place),
which certainly one should not be deterred by it,
it is not a matter of sins,
no one is guilty in this –
certainly the ascent immediately began there –
in the manner of "And I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning"94
(as it says in today's Haftarah)94,
that there they returned
(even before Shabbat)
the matter of "your judges",
the study of Torah,
and "your counselors",
which includes acts of kindness,
and in the broad sense this includes any advice that one gives to another,
which applies to all Jews because "Who is wise? One who learns from every person"95,
And on the contrary –
in the manner of "
(And I will restore your judges)
as at first..
as at the beginning"
(with the comparative letter Kaf) –
for superiority,
because "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem"96,
and certainly there will come in your judges and your counselors in the future to come, relative to those who were "at first" and "at the beginning".
And in the manner of the explanation of "As in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show him wonders" –
"As in the days"
(with a comparative letter Kaf)
for superiority,
wonders even relative to the wonders at the time of the Exodus from Egypt97.
And may it be His will that we merit the fulfillment of the prophecy literally "And I will restore your judges as at first and your counselors as at the beginning" –
the Great Sanhedrin,
which "in Tiberias they are destined to return first,
and from there they will be transferred to the Temple"98,
to the Chamber of Hewn Stone,
speedily in our days, literally,
and in our time, also in the language of the Targum.
[His Holiness, the Rebbe, shlita, gave a jug of drink to the honorable Sh.D.B.
G. Shichyo for the Chanukat HaBayit of the Chabad House in Vienna,
Austria. And he commanded him to announce about the time and place of the Chanukat HaBayit. And after the aforementioned announcement (about the time and place) His Holiness, the Rebbe, shlita, said:]
And until then Mashiach will certainly come,
and then it will be "the synagogues and study halls that are in Babylon
(and in every place in the Diaspora)
are destined to be established in the Land of Israel"99,
and consequently one will need to know the exact address of this Chabad House,
and also the time of this Chanukat HaBayit in order to be able to participate in it.
His Holiness, the Rebbe, shlita, began to sing "And I will empty out for you a blessing".
The explanation in Rashi:
The command of the Holy One, blessed be He, was "Provide for yourselves wise, understanding, and known men, etc." But afterwards, when Moshe relates how he actually did it, it says100 "And I took the heads of your tribes, wise and known men, etc."
(without the word "understanding"),
"but understanding ones I did not find"101
[and in the language of the Gemara102 "but understanding ones I did not find"].
According to this, a question arises:
It is already stated earlier regarding the Mishkan that there were wise and understanding men,
"And I have filled him with the spirit of Hashem, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge"
(as above),
"And Bezalel and Oholiav worked, and every wise-hearted man in whom Hashem had put wisdom and understanding to know how to do all manner of work"103 –
so how can Moshe say "understanding men I did not find,"
since there were the understanding men who made the Mishkan?!
One cannot answer that between the time of the work of the Mishkan
(in the second year of their exodus from Egypt)
and the time when Moshe speaks here in the fortieth year, all the understanding men
(of the time of the Mishkan)
died by the decree of the sin of the spies –
because the words of Moshe in our parshah are not about the fortieth year but about what happened during the preceding years
("at that time"104),
in addition to the fact that the decree was only "from twenty years old and upward" at the time of the sin of the spies105,
i.e., only on those who were sixty years old and upward in the fortieth year,
but those younger than that could have remained alive.
From this it is proven that the understanding men about whom Moshe speaks in our parshah
(that "understanding men I did not find")
are a different type of understanding men from the wise-hearted men "in whom Hashem had put wisdom and understanding to know how to do" the work of the Mishkan.
Therefore, Rashi in our parshah is not satisfied with saying that "understanding" means "understanding one thing from another" as he explains it regarding the work of the Mishkan –
because regarding the work of the Mishkan it was indeed sufficient "and with understanding –
understanding one thing from his heart from the things he learned" in addition to "with wisdom –
what a person hears from others and learns";
מה שאדם שומע דברים מאחרים ולמד";
but in our parshah it speaks of a deeper level of "understanding men"
(of which type of understanding men "I did not find"),
i.e., "understanding men" in whom it is not merely "understanding one thing from another"
(and not merely "what a person hears from others and learns"),
but a deeper level of this.
And therefore Rashi continues by giving a parable for this:
"A wise man is like a rich money-changer: when they bring him dinars to examine, he examines; but when they do not bring him, he sits idle.
An understanding man is like a merchant money-changer: when they bring him money to examine, he examines; but when they do not bring him, he goes around and brings from his own."
The function of understanding
(understanding one thing from another)
relative to wisdom can be in two ways:
A) He indeed has a head on his shoulders and understands one thing from another
(and not only wisdom –
"what a person hears from others and learns"),
but the thing
(which he understands from another thing)
is not a novel thing,
no more than a thing understood from the preceding thing.
This level is what is spoken of regarding the work of the Mishkan. B) He also understands novel things from a thing. And this is the function of the "understanding men" in our parshah.
[And it can be said that this is the difference in the language of the verse,
that regarding the work of the Mishkan it says "understanding" but in our parshah it says "understanding men".)
And this is similar to the function of a merchant money-changer compared to a rich money-changer:
A rich money-changer,
since he has money and has all kinds of coins,
therefore people come to him and bring him dinars. But he himself does not go out and strive to earn more than he has,
because he is rich and is satisfied with himself. Therefore "when they bring him dinars to examine, he examines; but when they do not bring him, he sits idle."
But a merchant money-changer
(who is not rich)
"when they bring him money to examine, he examines",
but "when they do not bring him" he cannot go to sleep,
because then he will have nothing to eat
(since he is not rich and does not have money otherwise),
and therefore "he goes around and brings from his own." And as his name –
a merchant,
that is, a trader,
whose entire essence as a trader is not that he should invest a penny and earn a penny,
that is not a trader,
but he invests a penny in order to earn several times that.
With this parable Rashi explains the function of binah in relation to chochmah
(in our parshah),
that "nevonim" is not merely understanding one thing from another
(but not a new thing,
as the interpretation is in "tevunah" regarding the work of the Mishkan),
but also sensing new things, similar to a shopkeeper-merchant who "goes around and brings from his own" in order to earn a new profit,
more than he invested,
i.e., not only understanding one thing from another but not a new matter,
rather he invests himself and finds ways to earn a new thing,
much more than the thing he initially invested.
What is indeed the reasoning why regarding the work of the Mishkan "tevunah" in the manner of simply understanding one thing from another was sufficient
(not new things),
whereas in our parshah one needs "nevonim" who also understand sensed things from a thing?
One who is a ben chamesh lamikra understands this by himself:
Regarding the Mishkan it was taught "and you shall erect the Mishkan according to its ordinance, as you were shown on the mountain"106. Consequently, he understands,
that even though one indeed needs "chochmah and tevunah"
(understanding one thing from another)
for the work of the Mishkan,
but not in a manner that one understands sensed things,
because the entire Mishkan "you were shown on the mountain",
and there is no need that the wise-hearted should innovate something of their own
(from the things they heard),
and only if "one of the vessels is lost"107 or a vessel breaks,
those who have chochmah and tevunah are needed to repair it,
but there is no need that they should sense something.
Whereas in our parshah one needs such "nevonim" who can engage with the Jewish people,
who were not such a "smooth" people,
as explained in Moshe's words in our parshah108,
"I alone cannot carry you... How can I alone bear your trouble, your burden, and your strife",
"teaching that the Israelites were contentious,
if one of them saw his opponent winning the case, he would say, 'I have witnesses to bring, etc.'"109
(and as it says earlier as well –
"and they tested Me these ten times"110 and the like).
Therefore it is understood that in order to be able to engage with Jews, one needed such "nevonim" who understand one thing from another, including also new things,
similar to a shopkeeper-merchant.
And based on this, it is also understood why the Almighty commanded "provide for yourselves wise and understanding men, etc.",
even though He certainly knew that such "nevonim" did not exist
(as later became evident –
"but understanding men I did not find"),
and the same question applies regarding Moshe himself,
who could also have anticipated that such "nevonim" did not exist
(because he knew the characteristics of the Jews) –
Because in order to engage properly with the Jews, one must have "nevonim",
therefore there was such a command,
only in practice "understanding men I did not find",
but from the perspective of the perfection of the matter, one needs "nevonim".
One must still understand the connection with what Rashi writes "chachamim –
kesufim",
what connection does "kesufim" have with "understanding one thing from another" and with the difference between a wealthy shopkeeper and a shopkeeper-merchant?
Hashem helps: when one looks in Rashi manuscripts and early editions111, one sees that the word "kesufim"
(in Rashi)
belongs to the word "chachamim",
and this refers to the previous explanation on the word "anashim".
That is, it should read as follows:
"Anashim –
righteous, kesufim",
and then a second opening phrase "chachamim venevonim –
understanding one thing from another, etc."
Based on this, everything is smooth,
because "kesufim" indeed does not refer to "chachamim",
but to "anashim tzaddikim",
and "chachamim" comes here together with "nevonim".
And based on this, further diyukim are understood:
If one were to say that "kesufim" specifically refers to "chachamim" –
the question arises:
a) Do "anashim tzaddikim"
(which is written197 there)
not have the quality of "kesufim",
that one wants to deal with them?!
b) The parable of a wealthy shopkeeper and a shopkeeper-merchant is indeed to explain the difference between chachamim and nevonim –
so why does Rashi cite from the verse only the word "nevonim"?!
Based on the above, then "longings" must stand before "wise ones" and this refers to "righteous men" is understood:
a) "Longings" indeed refers to the righteous. b) The word "wise ones" is indeed a part of the second discourse beginning "wise and understanding",
and upon this comes Rashi with the distinction between a wealthy moneychanger and a peddler moneychanger.
[Only Rashi does not need to explain "wise ones" because it is simple in the plain sense,
in contrast to "understanding" which he explains "understanding one thing from another",
and afterwards he brings the question of Arius to Rabbi Yosi and Rabbi Yosi's explanation etc.].
Based on this, all these precise points are understood,
and additional precise points. However, one must still explain the precise point of why Rashi brings the names –
"that Arius asked Rabbi Yosi",
and so forth.
The explanation of the father's comment on "Yair son of Menashe took the entire region of Argov" –
will be understood based on the above that this refers to Chochmah and Binah:
"Yair son of Menashe took the region of Argov" refers to the unification of Chochmah
("Yair")
and Binah
("Argov"),
and in the language of Kabbalah brought and cited in Chassidus111 a point within palaces:
Chochmah in the soul
(point)
refers to the aspect of self-nullification to Him, blessed be He, which is above intellect and attained knowledge,
the matter of faith and the power of self-sacrifice of a Jew,
as explained in Tanya,112
that "Chochmah is the source of intellect and understanding and it is above Binah which is the understanding of intellect and its comprehension etc. and therefore it is clothed in it
(in Chochmah)
the light of the Ein Sof, blessed be He, which no thought can grasp at all",
and from this comes the matter of faith and the power of self-sacrifice
(the aspect of Yechidah)
in every Jew,
"that faith is above intellect and comprehension, for a simpleton believes every word113
[this is Moshe114)
etc."
In contrast, the aspect of Binah in the soul
(palaces),
"expanses of the river",
refers to "contemplation on the greatness of Hashem, each according to his measure etc."115
And these two aspects –
Chochmah and Binah –
"must always be with a person in the service of Hashem without separation etc.,
namely, to contemplate and deepen his intellect and understanding in length and breadth etc. and to nullify himself to Him and cleave to Him with actual self-sacrifice in the aspect of Chochmah which is above reason and attained knowledge",
because "if he does not have the aforementioned aspect of self-nullification, then even if he contemplates the greatness of Hashem expansively according to his power and generates from this love and fear, they will not endure and he will fall from his level, Heaven forbid, for Chochmah enlivens its owner116 etc.,
and it is called a point within palaces etc.,
that the point enlivens the palace, for if there is no point, the palace serves no purpose etc."115
That is, in every detail of the contemplation of the aspect of Binah, the point of Chochmah must be heard and shine,
the matter of faith, fear of Heaven, and self-sacrifice of the aspect of Yechidah in the soul.
That is, Chochmah does not remain in its place,
but rather it is drawn down into Binah,
as it is written117 "from the straits I called to God, He answered me with expansiveness",
from the strait and point of Chochmah one comes to the expansion of Binah.
Until in a manner that Chochmah must "conquer" Binah –
"Yair son of Menashe took the region of Argov",
because faith, fear of Heaven, and self-sacrifice must lead the contemplation in intellect
(not the opposite, Heaven forbid),
and this
(the unification of Chochmah and Binah,
faith and intellect)
is expressed in actual deed,
conquest.
And this begins "on the other side of the Jordan"
(where "Yair took Argov" was) –
in the root of matters,
before "entering" the Land of Israel –
there already exists there the "Yair son of Menashe took the region of Argov",
the conquest of Binah by Chochmah;
כיבוש בינה ע"י החכמה;
and from there it is then drawn into Chochmah and Binah in their place.
The explanation of today's chapter
(regarding Rabbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus and Rabbi Elazar ben Arach) –
is founded on the above that they correspond to Chochmah and Binah:
The five students that Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai had are five general types which include all types and methods of study
(as discussed many times119).
And based on this, it can be said that the five students correspond to the ten
(five and five)
Sefirot.
And it can be said that Rabbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus
(Rabbi Eliezer the Great)
corresponds to the Sefirah of Chochmah,
and Rabbi Elazar ben Arach corresponds to the Sefirah of Binah.
As expressed in their praises:
The praise of Rabbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus is "a plastered cistern that loses not a drop" –
the matter of Chochmah. And the praise of Rabbi Elazar ben Arach is "like an ever-flowing spring" –
the matter of Binah,
understanding one thing from another, give and take, and pilpul,
it begins from a spring
(Chochmah) –
but the spring is ever-flowing.
And what the difference between them is also hinted in their names:
Rabbi Eliezer
(ben Hurkanus)
is with a yud,
which indicates the point of Chochmah,
in contrast to Rabbi Elazar
(ben Arach)
which is without a yud.
And one sees the difference between them also in their statements in this chapter
[where one sees openly (not in hint) the matter of the revealed aspect of Chassidus]:
"Rabbi Eliezer says a good eye",
where eye
(sight)
is the aspect of Chochmah 120. And "Rabbi Elazar says a good heart",
which is the aspect of Binah –
"Binah is the heart" 121.
And the ultimate perfection is specifically when one has both things together –
Chochmah and Binah,
the point within the palaces.
And it can be said that
(also)
this is the intention in the words of Rabbi Elazar
(ben Arach)
further in this chapter 122 "Be diligent to study Torah",
that together with "a spring that overpowers"
(pilpul and give-and-take),
Binah –
there must be diligence in Torah study,
Chochmah;
חכמה;
also for one whose Torah study is for in-depth analysis
("like a spring that overpowers")
there must first be the introduction of study for memorization
(Chochmah).
And if not, Heaven forbid –
he can become confused,
as happened to Rabbi Elazar ben Arach,
that he said "their heart was silent" instead of "this month is for you" 123.
And one can find further hints in this chapter
(and in other places)
regarding the connection of Rabbi Eliezer ben Horkenos and Rabbi Elazar ben Arach with Chochmah and Binah.
It was said above that on the second of Menachem-Av we study chapter four of the Laws of the Chosen House. One also finds in this chapter
(at its beginning and its end)
the matter of the unification of Chochmah and Binah
(the point within the palaces):
At the beginning of the chapter the Rambam writes:
"There was a stone in the Holy of Holies in its west, upon which the Ark rested".
[And the question on this is known according to the revealed aspect 124 (in order to also speak about a matter in the revealed aspect):
The Gemara says in Yoma 125 "The Ark that Moshe made had ten cubits in every direction",
it follows that the Ark was in the center of the Holy of Holies –
so how does the Rambam write that it was "in its west"? }
היינט ווי שרייבט דער רמב"ם אז דאס איז געווען "במעונו"? }
At the end of the chapter the Rambam writes:
"And once a year from Passover to Passover they would whitewash the Sanctuary",
the commentators on the Mishnah explain 126 that "Sanctuary" means the entire building –
"the entire building together is called Sanctuary"
(even though in detail the Sanctuary is only a part of the Temple,
as the Rambam himself writes earlier 127).
That is, that which "once a year from Passover to Passover they would whitewash the Sanctuary" applies to the entire building,
but "they would whitewash the altar twice a year, on Passover and on Sukkos" 128
[ "Rabbi says: Every Shabbat eve they would whitewash it with a cloth because of the blood" 129 ].
And what one sees here –
at the beginning and end of chapter four –
the matter of the unification of Chochmah and Binah,
the point within the palaces:
"There was a stone in the Holy of Holies in its west, upon which the Ark rested"
(at the beginning of the chapter) –
this is the point
(Chochmah),
for in the Ark were only the two tablets of the covenant 130
(Torah,
Chochmah),
and the "Sanctuary"
(about which he speaks at the end of the chapter)
which is "the entire building" –
is the palaces,
Binah. And this is in a manner of a point within the palaces
(unification of Chochmah and Binah) –
because the central point of the Sanctuary
(the entire Temple)
is the Ark in the Holy of Holies,
the place of the Ark is not from the measurement 131,
as the Ramban writes 132 that "the main desire in the Mishkan is the place of the resting of the Shechinah, which is the Ark, etc.".
At the beginning of today's lesson of Rambam in the Laws of Entering the Temple 133 we study,
"It is a positive commandment to sanctify the hands and feet of the serving Kohen, and afterwards he shall serve, as it is said 134 'And Aharon and his sons shall wash from it their hands and their feet, etc.'".
[And as was discussed previously the give-and-take on this according to the revealed aspect 135 (and it is surprising that it was not copied in what was recently reprinted) –
if the Kohen left the Temple in the middle of the day and the like,
whether he needs to have sanctification of hands and feet again].
One must understand
(at least from the aspect of "to correct the opinions and to straighten all deeds" 136 in the law in the Rambam)
why this commandment is only for sanctification of hands and feet and not for the face –
just as the law is regarding Shabbat that one must "wash his face, hands, and feet" 137?
And on the contrary:
If a Kohen must have sanctification of hands and feet before he enters to perform the service in the Temple,
which are external limbs,
all the more so that he must have sanctification of his face,
which indicates inner service! And especially according to what is explained elsewhere 138 the difference between the service of the Kohanim and the service of the Leviim,
that the service of the Kohanim
(the aspect of Chochmah)
is in a hidden manner,
primarily inner service,
in contrast to the service of the Leviim
(the aspect of Binah)
which is service with voice and song,
primarily external service.
And one can say the explanation of this:
It is understood and simple that just as when the serving kohen had sanctification of hands and feet, there was also,
all the more so and certainly,
sanctification of the face.
The difference, however, is
that sanctification of hands and feet could be done before he performs the service in the Sanctuary,
because it did not need to come to the assistance of the service and sanctity of the Sanctuary.
But sanctification of the face requires coming to the assistance of the service and sanctity of the Sanctuary.
The explanation:
On one hand, it is understandable that all matters that one can do on his own without the assistance of the sanctity of the Sanctuary
(the service in the Sanctuary) –
one must do them on his own outside the Sanctuary,
and not utilize the sanctity of the Sanctuary for a matter that does not require coming to the sanctity of the Sanctuary;
און ניט אויסנוצן קדושת המקדש אויף א זאך וואו מ'דארף ניט אנקומען צו קדושת המקדש;
on the other hand, it is understood that a matter for which one needs the assistance of the sanctity of the Sanctuary –
one must do it inside the Sanctuary.
For example –
on both extremes:
Slaughtering non-sacred animals is forbidden in the Courtyard139,
even though slaughter is a commandment and one recites a blessing over it140. One could seemingly ask:
Whom does it bother that slaughtering non-sacred animals should be in the Courtyard? The answer to this is:
Since slaughtering non-sacred animals can be done outside the Courtyard,
i.e., to fulfill the commandment of slaughter one does not need to come to the sanctity of the Courtyard,
one must not utilize the sanctity of the Courtyard "in vain",
for a matter in which one does not need to come to the sanctity of the Sanctuary.
On the other hand:
Slaughtering sacred offerings must be specifically in the Courtyard –
because the slaughter requires coming to the sanctity of the Courtyard,
therefore it must be specifically inside the Courtyard.
Similarly,
and moreover,
the burning of the incense,
the most minute of the minute,
must be specifically inside,
in the Holy of Holies,
and it may not be outside of it.
And in a similar and analogous manner, one can say also regarding the difference between sanctification of hands and feet and the face:
The matter of sanctification of hands and feet,
external limbs
(and in general –
the aspect of hindparts relative to the face),
can be done before one performs the service in the Sanctuary,
i.e., one does not need to come to the assistance of the service and sanctity of the Sanctuary. Therefore, the commandment "to sanctify the serving kohen's hands and feet" is before he performs the service
(similar to how there must also be preparation before entry and service that the kohen should have no blemish,
as explained in the continuation of the chapters in today's lesson of the Rambam),
just like all matters of service that one can do without the assistance of the service and sanctity of the Sanctuary –
one must do them on his own.
But sanctity of the face,
which indicates inner service –
cannot be done without the assistance of the actual service and sanctity of the Sanctuary. Therefore, there is no commandment of sanctification of the face before the service,
because the service
(of sanctification of the face)
cannot be done without the actual service in the Sanctuary,
therefore it must be done then
(and not beforehand).
And the explanation of the difference between the service of
(sanctification of)
hands and feet and
(sanctification of)
the face –
can be explained based on what is explained in the discourse "Do not distress Moab"141 and in many places,
that in this time the primary service is in refining the seven attributes
(corresponding to the seven lands of the nations),
not in the service of the three intellects Chabad
(the three lands of the nations),
for which
(the service of the intellects)
one does not currently have the power,
and for this one needs to come to the assistance that will be drawn from above in the future.
The matter of attributes and intellects in the limbs of the body –
are the hands and feet and the face:
The hands and feet
(beginning and end of the body)
correspond to the attributes
(which are called the body142).
The hands are the beginning of the attributes and the feet are the end of the attributes. Therefore, one also sees in the form of the human body,
that the hands are located near the place of the heart
(place of the dwelling of the attributes),
and moreover –
they emerge from the part of the body that is near the heart
(below the neck and the throat,
and certainly below the head).
Therefore, one lays tefillin
(of the hand)
on the hand opposite the heart,
in order to subjugate the heart,
the attributes.
And the reason why it is placed specifically on the arm
(opposite the heart),
and not on the heart,
in the same way that tefillin of the head are placed on the head
(to subjugate the mind),
meaning not directly on the brain inside the head
(obviously),
but on the exterior of the head,
so too one could seemingly place tefillin on the heart,
not on the heart itself,
but on the part of the body where the heart is located,
like the Choshen which was worn on the body opposite the heart –
one could say,
because the subjugation of the heart and mind
(through the tefillin)
must take effect in the body,
in actual deed
(and this is the main point),
and the beginning of the body
(and the power of action)
starts from the hands
(and the end of the body –
the feet),
therefore one places the tefillin on the arm,
and specifically –
the weaker arm143,
but opposite the heart,
a point in the chambers.
And in particular –
within the intellect itself –
the hands and feet correspond to Chochmah and Binah, and accordingly there is a connection with the other Torah lessons of this day which speak about Chochmah and Binah,
as above):
The hands contain within them a revelation of the intellect and reason more than the feet144. As is simply seen, the fingers of the hand are a vessel for the matter of intellect and reason, and they divide a matter of intellect and bring out the matter of intellect into the division of the letters of writing on paper
(not speaking of Shabbos).
However, the feet are only connected with the power of action,
to the extent that they are like the animalistic part of man. And within the intellect itself –
Binah is the aspect of action within the intellect relative to Chochmah.
But primarily and generally –
the hands and feet are the level of the emotions,
as is simple in the depiction of the body
(as above),
that the hands
(and certainly the feet)
emerge below the head and the neck opening, etc.
However, the face pertains to the matter of the intellect in the head.
And based on what is explained in the discourse "Al Titzar" mentioned above,
that in this time the main service is in the emotions,
because this one has the power to do,
whereas the service of the intellect will mainly be only in the future to come, because for this one needs to attain an influence and assistance from above –
one can also say the difference regarding the sanctification of the hands and feet and the sanctification of the face in the time of the Temple,
that the sanctification of the hands and feet,
the clarification of the refuse,
one can accomplish on his own without assistance and influence from above from the service and holiness of the Temple,
whereas the service of the sanctification of the face,
the service of the intellect,
requires an influence and assistance from above from the holiness and service of the Temple.
And one can connect this and explain based on this the verse in today's Haftorah145 "When you come to see My face, who sought this from your hand, trampling My courts":
Why is the language not simply –
"Who sought this from you"
(or "from you"),
like "When a man brings from you etc."146 and the like?
The explanation of this is:
The main service of man –
the clarification of the emotions –
is expressed in "from your hand" and "trampling My courts",
"the matter of trampling and crushing"147.
And may it be His will that from this discourse regarding the sanctification of the hands and feet of the Kohanim in the Holy Temple –
may we soon literally see this with fleshly eyes,
Kohanim in their service, Leviim on their platform, and Yisraelim in their stands,
in the third Beis HaMikdash,
the eternal House,
in the true and complete redemption,
and simply,
speedily in our days and literally in our time.
Before concluding, a summary will be made of what was previously discussed and proposed regarding adding in Torah study and in charity and "aspects" etc.
And certainly one will do this with alacrity,
beginning already from this Shabbos –
that which one can do on Shabbos;
דאס וואס מ'קען טאן שבת;
and then immediately after Havdalah –
one should do this amidst the entire storm of the thirty-nine labors
(which are forbidden on Shabbos),
which correspond to the thirty-nine labors that were done in the Mishkan148 and through this a Mishkan and Temple was built for Hashem,
about which the Most High says "And I will dwell in their midst"149.
And from the forty labors less one
(in the language of the Mishnah150),
through which one builds in the world the Mishkan and Temple for Hashem,
which is analogous151 to the fifty gates of understanding given to him less one152 –
one then also comes to the fiftieth gate,
the ultimate perfection,
Until there is the perfection of the Mishkan and Temple for Hashem in this physical world –
"These are the generations of Peretz"153 full154
(which is greater than "These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created"155 full154 which was at the beginning of creation)156,
in the true and complete redemption,
And the prayer and request "May the Beis HaMikdash be built speedily in our days" is fulfilled,
literally speedily in our days.
The Rebbe of blessed memory commanded to sing "He will build the Holy Temple, etc."
The explanation of why Rashi brings the question and explanation "What is the difference between wise men and men of understanding" in the name of its speaker –
"Arius asked Rabbi Yosi":
As discussed many times, when Rashi brings a name, this is proof that this contributes to the plain meaning
(the simple meaning of Scripture),
but on the other hand –
it is not an absolute necessity in the simple meaning of Scripture itself,
because if so, Rashi would have said it explicitly, not hinted at in a name,
rather it adds explanation for a student who seeks to have more explanation in this matter,
he will understand it by inquiring into what distinguished the person in whose name Rashi brings it.
And in our matter:
When the child of five studying Scripture learns this Rashi about the superiority of men of understanding over wise men
(like the superiority of a money changer over a wealthy money changer) –
he may still want an explanation why the advantage of men of understanding over wise men is so emphasized. Especially since in practice "I have not found men of understanding",
and nevertheless the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded that men of understanding should also be chosen,
because in order to engage with the Jewish people one needs men of understanding,
those who understand one thing from another,
even new things
(as discussed at length above).
So in order to give the child of five studying Scripture more understanding of the greatness of the emphasis on men of understanding –
Rashi brings that Rabbi Yosi is the one who explained "What is the difference between wise men and men of understanding":
When the child of five asks further,
they tell him that Rabbi Yosi was distinguished by that "his reasoning was with him"157,
"his explanation was with him,
to give a reason for all his words,
that he would settle his words"158,
i.e., that he was distinguished in the matter of understanding –
understanding one thing from another,
his reasoning was with him. And therefore it is stated in the Yerushalmi159 that "When Rabbi Yosi died, understanding ceased."
From the fact that the Gemara emphasizes that specifically Rabbi Yosi had "his reasoning was with him",
it is understood that this was a novelty specifically with him.
That is, that with other Tannaim the matter of "his reasoning was with him" was not so emphasized,
and regarding some matters one could say "if it is a law we will accept it"160,
without a reason and rationale in the matter;
אן א טעם והסברה בדבר;
but Rabbi Yosi was distinguished by that "his reasoning was with him".
And based on this, the child of five studying Scripture receives additional explanation in the greatness of the emphasis on the advantage of "men of understanding",
and why it is so relevant to have "men of understanding"
(even though in practice "I have not found men of understanding") –
because this is said by Rabbi Yosi,
who was distinguished in the matter of understanding,
"his reasoning was with him",
therefore he was so invested in this.
The emphasis on this
(in the superiority of "men of understanding")
is even stronger when one knows that the explanation of Rabbi Yosi came in response to the question of Arius
("Arius asked Rabbi Yosi: What is the difference between wise men and men of understanding"):
A child of five studying Scripture understands that a question and doubt on a matter in the Torah comes from gentileness. Because the existence of a question and doubt on a matter in the Torah –
weakens the understanding of that matter.
On the other hand he understands,
that when the Torah brings down a question,
even from a gentile,
it is not simply foolishness, Heaven forbid,
for we are not dealing with fools161,
rather it is a matter of wisdom,
which comes from the fact that in the truth of matters there is a place for a question on the matter. And through answering the question, one comes to an understanding of the matter,
more than it would have been without the question.
[As explained in many places162 the reason why the law is like the Bavli163,
due to the multitude of difficulties and discussions,
"He has made me dwell in darkness"164.
And analogous to the superiority of the decrees and stringencies that were added specifically from the darkness of exile]165
So too it is understood regarding the question of Arius to Rabbi Yosi "What is the difference between wise men and men of understanding" –
that this is a question that is sustained according to wisdom.
And this is hinted at in the name "Arius",
from the word light,
the aspect of wisdom.
That is, that his question comes
(not from foolishness, rather)
from the brightness
(light)
of wisdom.
And this also adds explanation in the content of his question "What is the difference between wise men and men of understanding" –
because since he
(Arius)
is the aspect of wisdom
(light),
he asks what is the superiority of understanding over wisdom.
And specifically Rabbi Yosi,
whose "reasoning is with him"
(in the aspect of Binah),
has the power to answer completely the question of Arius
(in the aspect of Chochmah) –
because he himself is distinguished in the matter of Binah.
When one says "his reasoning is with him" regarding Rabbi Yosi, it does not mean that by other Tannaim their reasoning was never with them. Certainly, they also had the matter of Binah. Rather, Rabbi Yosi was distinguished
(more than other Tannaim)
in this matter of Binah. And his activity expresses itself in actuality specifically in a case where all other Tannaim have nothing to answer,
and Rabbi Yosi,
whose reasoning is with him,
can indeed answer there.
And through the question of Arius,
which is a true question from the aspect of Chochmah
(light),
there subsequently comes, by means of Rabbi Yosi's explanation, an additional understanding in the superiority of "Nevonim,"
which without his question would not have been known,
as above.
And one may add to this two points:
It states in certain books166,
that Rabbi Yosi in the aforementioned story refers to Rabbi Yosi the Amora. According to this, this is not the Rabbi Yosi whose reasoning is with him.
But this is an error,
because the source of Rashi's words
[as one who is "Ben Chamesh LaMikra" understands simply,
that when Rashi brings a matter in the name of the Tannaim and Amoraim or "Raboseinu Darshu" and the like,
he saw it somewhere in a book,
because Rashi was in a later time)
is in the Sifri,
which is a book of Baraitot167
(not like the Gemara) –
one must say that Rabbi Yosi who is brought in the Sifri is Rabbi Yosi the Tanna, and particularly when one brings "Rabbi Yosi"000 it generally means the well-known Rabbi Yosi,
the Tanna].
[And it is understood that regarding the Sifri one cannot say as one says regarding the Zohar,
that what is brought there are statements of the Amoraim,
even though the Zohar is from the time of the Tannaim (as the Yaavetz asks168) –
that this is from the souls of the Amoraim (before they descended into a body).
In the manner that one finds in many places in the Zohar statements from souls in the Garden of Eden. Only sometimes it is relevant that the Zohar emphasize this and sometimes not;
ע"ד ווי מ'געפינט בכ"מ בזהר מאמרים פון נשמות אין גן עדן. נאר אמאל איז נוגע אז דער זהר זאל דאס מדגיש זיין און אמאל ניט;
one cannot answer thus regarding the Sifri,
as is understood. Rather, when a statement is brought in the Sifri one must say that it is from a Tanna].
Even if one says with difficulty that it speaks about Rabbi Yosi the Amora –
one must say that he also has a connection to "his reasoning is with him" of Rabbi Yosi,
because "the name causes"169.
A second point:
The aforementioned matter
(in explaining the connection of Arius with the question and explanation of "What is the difference between Chachamim and Nevonim")
will be sweetened according to what is said about Arius in the books of the history of the nations,
which indicates that it is true,
and we have the principle of the Rambam "accept the truth from whoever says it"170:
In those books it states171 that Arius was a priest among the Christians,
who did not accept the Christian faith in the "Trinity,"
the belief in the triune god.
As is known what the Rambam writes172 regarding the difference between the faith of the Ishmaelites and the faith of the Christians:
The Ishmaelites are not idolaters,
because they believe in one God. That which they prostrate themselves to Mecca is only as a memorial.
However, the Christians believe in a "Trinity,"
that God consists of that man and two others.
Arius, however, did not accept this. He indeed held of that man,
but not as God,
and with him it was established that there is no God but One. For this they excommunicated him,
and afterwards he was reinstated, etc.
According to the known173 that "this corresponding to that God made" –
one may say that the root of this difference between unity and trinity in holiness is the difference between Chochmah and Binah:
Chochmah is the matter of unity,
and Binah in itself includes the first three –
three. And one need not elaborate on this, as it is understood and simple.
And according to this it emerges that Arius,
who denied the belief in the trinity and accepted the matter of unity –
is the counterpart of the aspect of Chochmah
(light).
And based on this, what was explained above will be sweetened, that specifically he asked "What is the difference between the wise and the understanding,"
and what is the advantage of understanding over wisdom –
because for him, the advantage of the wisdom of the side of impurity was specifically placed
(unity)
over the understanding of the side of impurity
(trinity).
And specifically Rabbi Yossi, whose reasoning is with him
(understanding)
answered him and explained the advantage of understanding.
And even though outside the exile is found in a place where all the priests are found –
but after the Torah brings it down,
it becomes transformed into holiness,
like "the couches that were spread for him in a forbidden manner were spread for him in a permitted manner"<sup>174</sup>;
ע"ד "מצעות שהציעו לו באיסור הציעו לו בהיתר" 174;
one transforms the wisdom and understanding of the side of impurity into wisdom and understanding of holiness –
like the work of the future that will be "Hashem your G-d will enlarge your border and you will add for yourself three more cities"175,
the conquest and transformation of the three lands,
the three intellects,
but through the study of Chabad Chassidus in this time, one can already accomplish something similar to this in this time.
And as the Rambam brings down176 the aforementioned verse
("If Hashem your G-d will enlarge your border etc.")
as a proof and hint in the Written Torah regarding the coming of Moshiach
(as was discussed at length previously177:
"Even regarding the cities of refuge it says, 'If Hashem your G-d will enlarge your border and you will add for yourself three more cities etc.' and this thing never happened,
and the Holy One, blessed be He, did not command in vain",
therefore this is a proof that this will be fulfilled with the coming of Moshiach our righteousness.
The question arises:
Why does the Torah need to write about the coming of Moshiach in this way,
and then one must wait thousands of years until one sees that "this thing never happened",
and then one must arrive at an interpretation that this alludes to the coming of Moshiach –
could the Torah not have written this explicitly in clear and lucid language,
that Moshiach will come?!!
The explanation of this is: Torah
(the Written Torah)
is about instruction and law. Everything that is written in the Torah must be an instruction and law in practice. In the Oral Torah, Midrash, Zohar, and Midrash HaNeelam etc., things can be written that are not relevant to law;
איז ענינה הוראה והלכה. יעדער זאך וואס שטייט אין תורה דארף זיין א הוראה והלכה בפועל. אין תושבע"פ מדרש און זהר און מדרש הנעלם וכיו"ב קענען שטיין זאכן וואס זיינען ניט נוגע להלכה;
but in the Written Torah, only truths and laws are written.
Therefore, it is not written in the Written Torah that Moshiach will come,
because that is not an instruction and law in practice,
it is only a revelation of reality.
The Rambam, however, wants to find a proof in the Written Torah –
he must find a law in the Written Torah that necessitates the matter of the coming of Moshiach. The law of Kriat Shema,
for example,
does not necessitate the coming of Moshiach,
and the proof –
one fulfills the mitzvah of Kriat Shema
(twice each day)
in all times,
even after the destruction,
in the time of exile.
And so it is regarding all laws and instructions in the Written Torah.
However, the command regarding the cities of refuge,
"If Hashem your G-d will enlarge your border etc.",
which "never happened" –
necessitates the matter of the coming of Moshiach when the command will be fulfilled.
However, "regarding the words of the prophets, the matter does not require a proof, for all the books are filled with this matter"178.
And may it be His will that from this discussion of these matters –
one should merit that Moshiach should come in actuality,
in the true and complete redemption,
and we will have the third Holy Temple where we will offer the daily offering twice each day,
in which all Jews have a portion.
And may these days be turned into joy and gladness and festive occasions,
and speedily, in our very own days.
One should make a gathering and farbrengen to bring into actual practice the resolutions mentioned above.
And may it be His will that this should bring the coming of Moshiach our righteousness in actuality,
below ten handbreadths.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing. And very soon, may one make the "final blessing" upon the exile,
and speedily, in our very own days.
