When it was discussed
(note 5 at its end)
that the Holy One, blessed be He's decision to give the Torah to Israel was already before creation,
as our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said: "In the beginning, for the sake of the Torah etc. and for the sake of Israel",
as is known that two interpretations in one word are related to each other,
to the point that they become unified,
like the teaching of "sha'atnez" 2,
that the three words "shua", "tavui", and "nuz" come in the interpretation of one word,
and so too with two matters
(Torah and Israel)
in the interpretation of "Bereishis" - it is mentioned,
that there is also in our case three matters - why all matters of the Giving of the Torah are connected with "the third":
(In the beginning for the sake of)
Torah by itself and
(In the beginning for the sake of)
Israel by itself,
and how Torah and Israel become one thing,
which then brings to both of them an incomparable elevation.
[Continuing from the lesson of the fixed day (the second day) of Shavuos falling on Shabbos as the fixed day of the Giving of the Torah the first time [section 6] - it was said:]
1) And although this is the fixed day of the second day of Shavuos,
when we do not read the Ten Commandments but another Torah reading
[even though all parts of the Torah are a part of one Torah,
and they all have the same force and holiness,
as the Rambam writes 3 that even matters in the Torah that are from one extreme to the other have the same force and holiness,
nevertheless, there is a difference as to which matter in the Torah is read publicly],
nevertheless, there is an advantage in the second day of Shavuos
(in this year)
over the first day, being Shabbos,
when the Giving of the Torah occurred the first time. And this also has an influence on the first day of Shavuos,
the eve of Shabbos,
as discussed 4.
(2) And the lesson of Shavuos falling on Shabbos - when all Jews become unified in the matter of the prohibition of work and the obligation of Shabbos delight and "all your work is done" 5 is understandable even to a small child,
because one also educates a child in the matter of Shabbos
(which at the Giving of the Torah all Jews were like an infant in school 6],
as explained in the laws of Shabbos 7
[and on the contrary - specifically in the laws of Shabbos are the laws regarding education of a minor in general explained].
As the matter is simply - that the matter of Shabbos is understandable to children simply,
more than other matters:
When it comes to the festival of Pesach,
a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt - one must first tell the child that there was a Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who enslaved the Jews,
and afterwards the Almighty took them out of Egypt etc.,
and so too regarding other festivals;
וכיו"ב בנוגע צו אנדערע ימים טובים;
When it comes, however, to Shabbos - one need not come to any matters,
because the child himself knows simply that there is a Creator of the world and its Leader,
as he says in "Modeh Ani" every morning "I give thanks before You, living and eternal King etc.",
he knows that there is a Creator of the world,
and together with this He is the Creator of the world and its Leader. Even if one would say that the child does not know on his own that the Creator of the world is also his Leader - he understands this simply
(when one explains it to him)
from his father:
Together with the fact that his father and mother gave birth to him,
his father is also his leader. And when Shabbos comes - it is just as his father rests, so too
(so to speak)
the Almighty also rests,
the Creator of the world and its Leader.
Consequently, one can also easily make him understand the superiority of Shavuos in the fixed day of this year when for all Jews
(both in the Land of Israel and in the Diaspora)
it is the day of Shabbos,
when "all your work is done". And who brings about "your work is done"? Not a created being,
but the Almighty. Which even a child understands,
that a created being,
no matter how great he may be,
even through a service of "with all your might" 8,
cannot bring about that "your work is done" in perfect completeness,
because a created being is still limited. But when the Almighty brings about "your work is done" - it is in perfect completeness.
And the determination of "the time of the giving of our Torah" in this year on the day of Shabbat gives even more strength for love and unity of Israel,
"as one man with one heart"9,
not only "as one man"
(love of Israel),
a unity in action,
but not necessarily in the inwardness of his heart,
like the service of the Beinoni,
who stands at the ultimate perfection in actual deed,
even though his inwardness has not yet been transformed10,
but also "with one heart"
(unity of Israel),
a unity also from the aspect of the inwardness of the heart.
And one has the powers to carry this out from within delight
(delight of Shabbat)
and joy
("and on your joyous occasions — these are Shabbats"11),
in addition to the joy of Yom Tov.
And since one has the powers,
one can certainly fulfill this in actual practice.
And may it be His will that "so may it be for us"
(in the language of the Havdalah text which is recited at the conclusion of Shabbat),
which is not merely a language of promise,
but also a command that Jews should utilize the powers that have been given to them,
whereby the matter is then actualized,
and from within joy and from within true delight.
It was discussed here regarding the lesson in the matter of love and unity of Israel from the weekly portion,
Parshat Nasso,
that there are in this many hints and lessons including regarding action,
but the content of the entire portion is expressed in the name of the portion — "Nasso",
which is understood even by one who does not know what is being said but knows the Holy Tongue,
including the interpretation of the word "Nasso"
(and if he does not understand on his own,
it is within his capacity to understand when they explain the interpretation to him).
And it was discussed that the lesson from "Nasso" is — the matter of counting in the manner of "naso" (elevation),
which indicates the affection for Israel in a revealed manner:
counting Israel in general indicates the affection for Israel,
and all the more so counting in the manner of "Nasso",
which indicates the affection for Israel in a manner of elevation
(as explained above from section 699 onward).
And in continuation of the matter he said:
Also regarding stars, the language of counting appears — "He counts the number of the stars"12
[as Rashi brings13 regarding Jews].
But with this, one does not find a counting
(of stars)
explicitly in the Written Torah:
In the Oral Torah it states14 that there are seven planets. And even that which is stated in the Written Torah15 that there are "the two great luminaries" — it is understood and simple that regarding two items it is not possible to speak of the true concept of counting. A true counting is at least of three things,
and for the most part — it is a count of many more than that. As this is according to the custom of Israel
[which is Torah,
as it states in responsa16 regarding testimony and wills (may each one live until one hundred and twenty years)],
that a minyan is at least of ten.
However, regarding the Children of Israel, their counting is stated explicitly and openly in the Written Torah,
which proves that the affection for them is revealed,
even to the extent of "Nasso",
as above.
And based on this, the additional superiority in the matter of love and unity of Israel in "the time of the giving of our Torah" in the determination of this year is understood:
In this year
(when Shavuot falls on Shabbat)
it occurs that before the time of the giving of our Torah, one completed studying
(in the Chumash-Rashi-Tanya lessons)
and reviewed the entire Parshat Nasso,
and afterwards one will further study the entire Parshat Nasso
(beginning from the reading in Mincha of this Shabbat)
during the week after the time of the giving of our Torah
(and the reading of Parshat Nasso — on the following Shabbat).
This is a unique determination specifically in this year:
"We always read Parshat Bamidbar Sinai before Atzeret"17.
However,
(the entire)
Parshat Nasso is sometimes read
(also)
before Atzeret,
but sometimes
(on that Shabbat)
after Atzeret. And in this itself
(when one reads Parshat Nasso after Atzeret)
there is a difference,
that sometimes one reads
(the entire)
Parshat Nasso only after Atzeret,
and sometimes — when Shavuot falls on Shabbat
(in the determination of this year)
— one reviews the entire Parshat Nasso before the time of the giving of our Torah18 in addition to that which one studied it in the Chumash-Rashi-Tanya lessons of the preceding week,
and afterwards
(after the time of the giving of our Torah)
one studies and reads again the entire Parshat Nasso
(and the reading of the entire portion is on the Shabbat after the time of the giving of the Torah).
Based on this and based on what was explained above
(that "Nasso" indicates the affection and elevation of Jews in a revealed manner)
it follows — that before one comes to the time of the giving of our Torah
(in this year),
one has, in the ultimate revelation, the matter of "Nasso",
the elevation of the Children of Israel — love and unity of Israel,
and one receives the Torah in a new manner
(in this year)
in a state and condition of elevation;
אין א מעמד ומצב פון נשיאות;
from which it is understood that at the time one comes to the time of the giving of our Torah itself,
an even higher perfection in "Nasso" comes about,
love and unity of Israel.
And the explanation:
Although at the time of the Giving of the Torah there was the Giving of the Torah
(“He gave us His Torah”)
and the Receiving of the Torah,
and so it repeats itself in a new manner each year at the time of the Giving of our Torah — it is nevertheless known that this is also connected and dependent on the preparation in the days preceding it,
the days of the Counting of the Omer,
which are a preparation for the Receiving of the Torah19. Specifically through the preparation of “seven weeks”20,
and “seven complete weeks”21 — the fiftieth day is thereby established,
the time of the Giving of our Torah22.
And within this itself there are levels:
There can be “seven weeks” but not “complete”,
therefore a second verse is needed where it also says “complete”. And so it is also understood that in the service of “completeness” itself there are levels.
As explained in Tanya23 regarding the service of repentance,
that “the essence of repentance is in the heart, and the heart contains many aspects and levels, everything according to the person, the time, and the place”,
according to Torah and according to nature which the Holy One, blessed be He, implanted, there are always changes in the heart,
and according to the changes in the action and state of the heart,
the service of repentance must also be.
Similarly regarding the preparation for the time of the Giving of our Torah in the manner of “completeness” — there are in this many levels.
And the manner of the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah at the time of the Giving of our Torah depends on the preparation for it in the preceding days:
The more perfection one has in the “completeness” as a preparation for the time of the Giving of our Torah — the greater is the perfection of the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah.
And based on this, the superiority of the determination of this year is understood:
At the time of the reading of Parshat Nasso
(the entire portion)
which is only after the time of the Giving of our Torah — one then indeed has the preparation
(for the time of the Giving of the Torah)
of “seven complete weeks”,
but this does not contain within it the preparation and superiority of “Nasso”,
elevation.
However, in the determination of this year,
when one reads and studies the entire Parshat Nasso before the time of the Giving of the Torah — one has the superiority that as a preparation for the time of the Giving of the Torah one has the concept of “Nasso” in perfection,
causing that the time of the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah should be with a “Nasso” that is incomparably higher.
And it can be explained based on the teaching of the Mishnah24 “Whoever fulfills the Torah out of poverty will ultimately fulfill it out of wealth”:
He can receive the Torah anew
(at the time of the Giving of the Torah)
through the preparation for it “out of poverty”,
he then also has the promise that “he will ultimately fulfill it out of wealth”. And this is emphasized in a determination of a year when Parshat Nasso comes after “the time of the Giving of our Torah”.
But in the determination of this year,
when one studies the entire Parshat Nasso before the time of the Giving of the Torah,
one has the lesson — that one fulfills the Torah initially
(even before the time of the Giving of the Torah)
out of wealth
(“Nasso”),
and when it comes to the time of the Giving of the Torah, he ultimately fulfills it out of wealth
(“Nasso”)
that is higher.
For one cannot say,
that since someone initially fulfilled the Torah out of wealth,
one should take away a good thing from him;
זאל מען פון אים צונעמען א גוטע זאך;
rather, this itself is the explanation of the Mishnah,
that when one has fulfilled the Torah initially out of wealth — “he will ultimately fulfill it out of wealth” that is higher,
so that relative to that higher wealth, the earlier “wealth” is called by the name “poverty”,
for the Torah is indeed “longer than the earth in measure and broader than the sea”25,
consequently, however much wealth he has in understanding and comprehension in the study of Torah — it is a matter of “poverty” relative to the Torah that can still come to him.
And similar to the story of the Tzemach Tzedek26
(and likewise with other early authorities27),
that at a certain time he would request that while he studied Torah they should bring out the Shabbat dishes filled with gold and silver coins,
for this effected in him a wealth and expansion of the intellect,
to such an extent that the prior comprehension is in a manner of “poverty”. And this applies even regarding the greatest comprehension,
since the Torah is “longer than the earth in measure, etc.”,
as above.
Then there is a storm - how can it be,
where does one get such an interpretation? There is a story about this in the Gemara28,
that "Rabbi Zeira when he ascended to the Land of Israel sat for one hundred
[or according to some29]
fasts so that the Babylonian Gemara would be forgotten from him",
so that he could learn the Talmud Yerushalmi. That is,30 since he wanted to have the wealth of the Talmud Yerushalmi,
the wealth of "direct light" relative to the Talmud Bavli
(as explained in Shaarei Orah31 and in other places32 the superiority of the Talmud Yerushalmi over the Talmud Bavli)
- he needed to attain a fast for this,
a matter of "poverty",
and through this "poverty" he attained the greatest wealth of the Talmud Yerushalmi.
From this is understood the lesson of the time of Mattan Torah in the fixed calendar of this year,
which comes after one has learned the entire Parshat Nasso,
and not only that one has learned it,
but that it teaches him
(as per the well-known saying33)
and this affects his actual deed as a soul in a body in this lowest world, below which there is no lower,
even in the lowest matters,
"all your deeds"34 and "all your ways"35:
The fixed calendar arouses a Jew and gives him the strength to learn Torah in a manner that already at the beginning
(before the time of Mattan Torah)
he has the matter of wealth
("Nasso")
in Torah,
and afterwards there comes to him a wealth
("Nasso")
that is more elevated.
And the lesson is particularly in the matter of love and unity of Israel
(as above),
that the fixed calendar of this year gives the strength that even before the time of Mattan Torah one has openly the elevation of the children of Israel
(which is connected with the unity of Israel),
all the more so when one comes to the time of Mattan Torah,
there comes to this an elevation in a more elevated manner.
And the fixed calendar in this year gives strength for learning Torah in such a manner throughout the entire year,
and furthermore - also throughout all the other years,
when the fixed calendar is in a different manner,
as has been discussed many times.
That is, that although the fixed calendar in this year is only in a minority of years,
like "the additional offerings according to their law"36,
unlike the fixed calendar in most years,
"the continual offerings in their order"36,
that one reads Parshat Nasso after the time of Mattan Torah - nevertheless, the "additional offerings according to their law" influences and gives strength also in the other years when it is "the continual offerings in their order".
From this is understood the practical difference:
Every Jew must know that the festival of Shavuot gives a special strength for all the years to learn Torah in a manner of wealth
("Nasso")
the most elevated,
and for love and unity of Israel in the most elevated manner. And this depends only on his will to utilize these strengths in actual deed.
From which it is understood,
that immediately on the morrow,
"Isru Chag"
(with all the elevations therein37)
- one must begin to utilize these strengths in actual deed,
both regarding oneself,
and regarding another - when one meets a Jew,
one must arouse in him that it is Isru Chag of Shavuot,
which is bound to the festival,
and one must utilize the strengths that the festival of Shavuot gives in the study of Torah and love and unity of Israel,
And afterwards - to continue this in the days that follow,
beginning from the days of completion,
until the twelfth of Sivan and including it38,
and afterwards in the third month,
until - afterwards in the days and times that follow.
And the main thing is the deed39:
It was discussed above40 that the time of Mattan Torah in general is particularly connected with love and unity of Israel,
all Jews had to be there and all equally heard the word of Hashem,
and to such an extent that the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded Moshe Rabbeinu "Go, descend",
in order that there should not be any complaint as to who is speaking with the Jews,
That is, that even in the Torah itself at the time of Mattan Torah there was not illuminated the matter of "These and those are the words of the living God",
in the plural,
but rather the matter of "and be with him whose ruling is followed",
ruling in the singular - the Unique One of the world gave the Jews the Torah in such a manner that there is no place for "These and those" in the plural,
All the more so at the time of Mattan Torah in the fixed calendar of this year,
when the matter of love and unity of Israel is even more emphasized - both because it is the day of Shabbat,
and because of the weekly portion
(Parshat Nasso).
One takes from this time of Mattan Torah, and particularly in the fixed calendar of this year, special strengths for love and unity of Israel,
And not only in a manner of "These and those are the words of the living God", but in a manner of "and be with him whose ruling is followed",
in a single manner specifically,
And this can also be connected to the haftarah of the second day of Shavuot,
where it states at the conclusion and seal of the haftarah43 "For the leader, with my melodies":
It is explained in the discourses of the Hilula44,
that the attribute of Netzach (victory/eternity)
("For the leader")
is rooted in the essence of the soul,
and "for the sake of overcoming the opponent, [the king] expends
(the king)
all the precious treasures of wealth that were gathered and accumulated over many years from generation to generation",
by him and by his forefathers45 and incidentally,
one must understand how the detail
(treasures of his forefathers)
corresponds in the allegory regarding the Above,
the Heavenly Kingdom),
"and which he never used for anything,
and is hidden and sealed from the eye of any beholder,
behold, at the time of waging war, he expends all the treasures".
In this — the attribute of Netzach — lies the entire service of the era of Ikveta d'Meshicha (the heels of Mashiach).
Therefore Moshe was "very humble, more than any person on the face of the earth"46,
and especially for the Jews in the generation of Ikveta d'Meshicha, seeing the trials through which they pass47! For what occupies the place of that which "Hashem spoke to Moshe face to face"48 and that which one hears the voice of Hashem from "I am Hashem your God"49 — compared to the fact that a Jew walks around and wallows in exile,
in Ikveta d'Meshicha and goes through matters that the mind cannot bear at all,
not merely that the mind cannot bear them,
but that the mind cannot bear them at all — that the only son of the Holy One, blessed be He, has been held in exile for 1900 years,
and in what kind of exile — where Jews are slaves to slaves!...
Even when one gives a Jew in exile children, life, and ample sustenance — what is this compared to "the feast of Shlomo in his time" which every Jew receives daily,
as the Torah rules50 regarding a Jewish laborer — from which it is understood that it speaks about physical matters in their simple sense — that "even if you do for them like the feast of Shlomo in his time, you have not fulfilled your obligation to them",
not merely "like the feast of Shlomo",
which one might think refers to when Shlomo was a "commoner"51 and wallowed,
or even after he repented
(according to one opinion51)
he did not return to his kingship as in the first kingship52,
rather "like the feast of Shlomo in his time",
"at the time of his kingship",
at the time when he was in the storm of his kingship,
"and Shlomo sat on the throne of Hashem"53.
But regarding a human homeowner — he is only obligated for the laborer's food,
not his clothing and his house,
not so the Above gives Jews sustenance,
clothing,
houses,
vineyard and field,
and a kosher wife
[all three matters discussed above54]
— it is therefore understood that since it speaks about Jews, the Above must give them all these matters with ultimate perfection and ultimate pleasure,
all the more so from a human homeowner;
במכ"ש פון א בעה"ב א בשר ודם;
And nevertheless, one sees that the exile has been drawn out for over 1900 years!
And no one opens a mouth or chirps!
Sometimes one gives a shout and a song and says a chapter of Tehillim — but what is this compared to the fact that Jews have been turning about in exile for over 1900 years,
they and their sons and their daughters,
with our youths and our elders, with our sons and our daughters,
and all of the people of Israel,
together with the Shechinah in exile55,
with the ministering angels etc.,
and through this — Jews from all previous generations find themselves in exile,
for it is simple and understood that a father and a grandfather and a great-grandfather,
even if he finds himself in the best place,
cannot accept it when he sees that his son,
a Jew,
all the more so an only son,
has already been for a scant 2000 years in a state of exile —
So what is all that has been done until now?!
And especially since "all the ends have passed"56 — so what does one do in exile?!
It is an entirely absurd thing!
Rather, one accepts with acceptance of the yoke,
that not by our will did we go into exile, but by the will of Hashem57 — but the question arises:
How can children, life, and ample sustenance be possible,
in the simple sense and spiritually — when one finds oneself in exile,
and "our signs we have not seen... and there is none with us who knows how long"58,
and "we have been exiled from our land and removed from our soil, and we are unable to ascend and appear and prostrate ourselves before You etc. in the great and holy House etc."
(as we say in the Mussaf prayer59),
one finds oneself in a specific place,
not within the four cubits of the Holy of Holies — so how can all these matters be possible?!
Further:
How can the Shulchan Aruch demand that a Jew serve his service with joy and a good heart,
at the same time when one says "We cannot ascend and appear and prostrate ourselves before You, etc.,"
and one explains this - "because of the hand that was sent forth upon Your Sanctuary."
As we prayed today in the Musaf prayer before the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He,
for during prayer there must be the intention of "Know before Whom you stand"60,
to the extent that in many synagogues it is written on the "prayer stand",
and in places where it is not written,
this is because there is no need to write it,
for this is the simple intention and the general and primary intention in the service of prayer in general
(not specifically in a synagogue),
and without this intention the prayer is no prayer at all61.
Regarding the explanation of the words - the specific intention in prayer - there are differences between the first verse of the Shema62 and the first blessing of the Shemoneh Esrei63 and the rest of the prayers,
and in this time one is in any case not fully intent on the explanation of the words<sup>64</sup>;
ובזמן הזה איז מען סיי-ווי ניט מכוון פירוש המלות בשלימות 64;
but the general intention of "Know before Whom you stand" - is indispensable in all prayers65.
May it be His will that we no longer need to speak about these matters,
for as soon as we begin to speak - we will show Jews,
that here is the Holy of Holies,
and the Ark with the two Tablets of the Covenant,
for all five things that were in the First Temple will be restored66,
and in a more elevated manner,
for the redemption comes "in the blink of an eye"67,
and even faster - "and behold, with the clouds of heaven"68,
And simply - below ten handbreadths,
and with joy and a good heart.
Discourse (in the manner of a talk)

In addition to the lesson from the entirety of Parshat Nasso,
there is also a lesson from the Torah portion of this day,
the seventh day of Parshat Nasso - from the seventh aliyah until the end of Parshat Nasso.
As is known, each day performs its task70,
and each day has its Torah portion designated for that day,
on the first day of the week - the Torah portion from the beginning of the parshah until the second aliyah,
on the second day - from the second aliyah until the third aliyah,
and in our case - the second day of Shavuot on Shabbat - from the seventh aliyah until the end of Parshat Nasso,
and likewise on the first day of Shavuot
(the sixth day of the week)
- from the sixth aliyah until the seventh aliyah of Parshat Nasso,
and on Erev Shavuot,
the fifth of Sivan
(when the Jews said "We will do and we will hear"71,
with the precedence of "we will do" to "we will hear"72)
- from the fifth aliyah until the sixth aliyah,
as discussed in the farbrengen of the previous Shabbat73.
The lesson from today's Torah portion will be understood by prefacing the lesson that was discussed
(in the farbrengen of the previous Shabbat73)
from the Torah portion of Erev Shavuot
(the fifth aliyah until the sixth aliyah in Parshat Nasso):
In the Torah portion from the fifth aliyah until the sixth aliyah, it discusses that "on the day that Moses finished setting up the Tabernacle"74 the princes of Israel came - "and the princes of Israel brought offerings... and they brought their offering before Hashem: six covered wagons and twelve oxen, a wagon for every two princes, and an ox for each one, and they presented them before the Tabernacle"75.
In this we see the matter of the unity of Israel,
and in several details:
All twelve princes - who represent all twelve tribes
(all of Israel)
- all came together with the same proposal and request with the same words,
"as one person with one heart"
(but here there is no need to ensure that it be "as one person with one heart" and not in another manner (as it was by the Jews when coming to Mount Sinai),
because it discusses the princes of Israel,
which is also from the term "nesiut" (leadership),
as mentioned above].
This was a novelty specifically on this day
(on the first day),
that the princes of Israel stood in complete unity,
and no difference or division was at all discernible among them,
not even the counting and mention of each prince individually,
as was the case on the subsequent days where each prince is mentioned individually,
"one prince each day, one prince each day"76,
unlike on the first day where all the princes are included in the general name "
(and they brought)
the princes of Israel",
or in the single word "princes",
before any difference or division is discernible among them as twelve separate princes of twelve separate tribes.
Further:
The twelve princes brought six wagons,
"a wagon for two princes." This further emphasizes their unity,
that each prince does not bring a complete thing by himself,
but he must join with another prince in order to bring a complete wagon.
That is, he thereby feels that he alone does only half,
and in order to accomplish a complete thing he must join with another prince.
And this is like the lesson on the unity of Israel from the half-shekel77,
that every Jew feels that he is only a half,
and in order for there to be a complete shekel he must join with another.
But in our case
(the wagons)
the matter of unity is even more strongly emphasized:
With a half-shekel alone one can also accomplish a complete thing,
for example — bring a tenth of an ephah for a meal-offering or a pinch of frankincense,
which is worth a half-shekel or even less,
and this is a valuable offering.
And with it they made the sockets of the Mishkan78,
the foundation of the Mishkan;
דער יסוד פון משכן;
But with a half-wagon one can accomplish nothing in the sacred service of the Mishkan,
not even a pinch of frankincense and the like.
Thus this emphasizes even more strongly how each prince must join with another prince,
for without this he has only a half-wagon
(also in quality)
which accomplishes nothing.
And from this there is an eternal lesson for all times — as it is stated in the Midrash79 that the wagons remained eternal in all generations,
the six wagons remain forever as an eternal memorial to the matter of the unity of Israel.
After this introduction, one will understand the lesson from today's Torah portion
(the seventh [aliyah] until the end of Parshat Nasso),
that when one stands on this day, one must reveal the superiority
(in the unity of Israel)
of this day over all other days,
also over the fifth day.
And the explanation:
In today's Torah portion of the Sabbath day
[And it should be noted,
that in that year the prince of the children of Ephraim brought "his offering for the dedication of the altar on the Sabbath day...
not by his own decision did he do so,
for I said to Moses, etc."80,
and even though "in every place, an individual's offering does not override the Sabbath," nevertheless,
"here an individual's offering overrides the Sabbath (even though it is 'sanctified and established'81),
this teaches how beloved the offering of the princes is before the Holy One, blessed be He"82,
and the reason for this is the unity that existed among them,
that "the offering of all of them was equal...
and none of them brought more than his fellow,
for if one of them had brought more than his fellow,
the offering of none of them would have overridden the Sabbath"83]
the total of the offerings of the twelve princes is counted,
a unity that comes after the offering of all the princes, each on his day.
This unity has a superiority over the unity of the first day
(the Torah portion of the fifth day):
The unity of the twelve princes on the first day is a unity that comes before the division,
before each of them brought his offering on a specific day and with his specific intentions, etc.
But the unity of the twelve princes on the last day comes after the division and differentiation among them.
And this is like the superiority of a document that was challenged and then upheld in court,
which in several details is stronger than a simple document that was not challenged,
even though every document is presumed valid84.
And this can also be connected to the future redemption and the Third Holy Temple:
Since the future redemption and the Third Holy Temple come after the exile,
the "challenge" to the "document" between the Jewish people and the Almighty will have an eternal validity,
an eternal redemption after which there is no exile85,
and an eternal Temple
(a perpetual House86),
"the Sanctuary, Hashem, Your hands established"87 in the manner of "Hashem will reign forever and ever"88,
not like the First and Second Temples which were subsequently destroyed,
because then
(after the Mishkan of Moses)
there was no challenge and upholding in court.
As explained in many places89 the superiority of Mashiach who comes to bring the righteous to repentance — the superiority of repentance that comes specifically through descent and challenge,
higher than the righteous from the start.
And as is simply understood how the matter is in the service of man:
A person derives more pleasure from something he has worked for than from a gift,
even if it is given to him in the manner of "one who gives gives generously"90. And in the language of the Mishnah — "according to the pain is the reward"91,
and this is like "You yearn for the work of Your hands"92.
The matter of unity that is emphasized at the end of Parshat Nasso,
is also seen at the beginning of Parshat Beha'alotecha — as discussed in the previous farbrengen93.
And as an introduction
(as a parenthetical remark):
At the farbrengen before this, the concept of unity was connected to Parshat Beha'alotecha. The question was asked:
When we are in the week of Parshat Nasso,
when we learn in the Chitas lessons Parshat Nasso,
and we must live with Parshat Nasso
(according to the teaching of the Alter Rebbe 94)
— how is it possible that we should connect it with Parshat Beha'alotecha?
Why was the question asked? Because when one speaks about a matter, one thinks of all kinds of interpretations of it,
such as the homiletical interpretation, the allegorical interpretation, and the poetic interpretation,
all interpretations — except for the simple interpretation!
It did not occur to them that the connection of Parshat Nasso with Parshat Beha'alotecha is actually in the simple sense — because in the Torah of Moses, Parshat Beha'alotecha comes immediately after Parshat Nasso!
One need not seek any little explanations, interpretations, and allusions for this — when the interpretation is understood simply from the order in the Written Torah,
that after Parshat Nasso comes Parshat Beha'alotecha!
The connection between Parshat Nasso and Parshat Beha'alotecha is even stronger
[in addition to the connection by virtue of the juxtaposition of the portions]
— as Rashi explains 95 in the simple meaning of the verse:
"Why was the section of the Menorah placed adjacent to the section of the Princes? Because when Aharon saw the dedication of the Princes, his spirits sank when he was not with them in the dedication, neither he nor his tribe,
the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: By your life, yours is greater than theirs, for you kindle and prepare the lamps."
And the necessity for this Rashi is in the simple sense:
When a five-year-old studying Chumash finishes learning
(at the end of Parshat Nasso)
about the offerings of all twelve princes
(from the twelve tribes),
he becomes disturbed:
What is happening with the tribe of Levi?!
Rashi answers him,
that Aharon had the same question,
until it caused him distress
("When Aharon saw the dedication of the Princes, his spirits sank when he was not with them in the dedication, neither he nor his tribe"),
because he was the prince of the tribe of Levi,
he had a basis for his claim
(being a prince of a tribe like the other twelve princes),
as was discussed at length once before 96.
One sees,
that the concept of unity at the end of Parshat Nasso,
is also emphasized at the beginning of Parshat Beha'alotecha,
in the matter of the kindling of the Menorah by Aharon the Kohen
(the answer to Aharon's question "that he was not with them in the dedication",
"the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: By your life, yours is greater than theirs, for you kindle and prepare the lamps") 97:
The seven lamps of the Menorah allude to the seven categories in the souls of Israel 98,
and just as in the Menorah there are seven lamps,
no less and no more,
and together with this the verse says 99 "toward the face of the Menorah
(toward the middle lamp* 99)
shall the seven lamps give light",
and furthermore — "from its base to its flower it shall be of one piece" 100,
the entire Menorah
(all seven lamps,
also the middle lamp)
is one entity 101,
"all of it one piece of pure gold" 102 — so too regarding the people of Israel,
that together with the fact that they are divided into seven categories 98,
they are all connected,
to the extent that they are all one entity — the unity of Israel,
as explained in Likkutei Torah 103.
Here is the place to explain another matter that was asked
(with a disturbance, etc.),
for which there is also a most simple answer,
but the world is accustomed that when one can utilize his erudition,
he need not think how the matter is according to the simple interpretation,
the simple meaning of the verse;
פשוטו של מקרא;
it is more enjoyable for him to learn according to the homiletical interpretation, the halachic interpretation, the allegorical interpretation, etc. — but not...
the simple interpretation!
We spoke 104 about the greatness of the virtue and merit of the women and daughters of Israel,
that as an introduction to the Giving of the Torah, the Almighty told Moses first "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob 105 — these are the women" 106,
and afterwards "and tell the children of Israel 105 — these are the men" 106,
which proves that in the preparations for the Giving of the Torah,
women have precedence over men 107.
And to such an extent,
that also regarding the ultimate purpose of the Giving of the Torah — the making of the Mishkan,
"And they shall make Me a sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst" 108,
which was built with the donations for the Mishkan of the thirteen 109
(fifteen 1101)
(ט"ו 1101)
physical items
("gold, silver, etc., shoham stones and stones for the settings" 111)
— it was that "the men came upon the women" 112, that they
(the women)
were there first,
and the men were secondary to them 113.
And there it was explicitly emphasized that the precedence of the women over the men was regarding the donations of all thirteen
(fifteen)
(ט"ו)
items with which the Mishkan was built,
including "shoham stones and stones for the settings, for the ephod and for the breastplate."
They asked about this:
It states explicitly in the verse114 "And the princes brought the shoham stones and the stones for the settings, for the ephod and the breastplate,"
and according to Rashi, this refers to the princes of Israel,
who donated the shoham stones and the stones for the settings, which the other Jews did not donate
("Thus said the princes: 'Let the community donate what they donate, and what they lack, we will complete,'
since the community completed everything, as it is said115 'and the work was sufficient,'
the princes said, 'What is there for us to do? They brought the shoham stones, etc.'"),
and simply - because they
(the other Jews)
did not possess shoham stones and stones for the settings
(for if they had possessed them,
they would certainly have donated them together with the other donations).
Now, how can one say
that "the men came with the women"
(which speaks about the rest of the Children of Israel,
not specifically the princes)
refers to the shoham stones and the stones for the settings, which the men and women did not bring
(and specifically the princes brought them)?
The explanation of this is:
That which was said
(that the precedence of the women's donation also includes the shoham stones and the stones for the settings)
is according to the explanation of the Gemara116
(unlike the aforementioned Rashi)
regarding that which is written "and they brought him yet a freewill offering morning by morning,"117
"What is 'morning by morning'? etc.,
It teaches that precious stones and pearls descended for Israel with the manna, as it is said, 'And the princes brought the shoham stones,'
the Tanna taught: 'princes' literally,"
"clouds"118
(and not the princes of Israel,
as per Rashi on the Torah).
And based on this, it is understood that all Jews could donate the shoham stones and the stones for the settings
(from the precious stones and pearls that descended (by means of the "princes,"
"clouds") with the manna morning by morning),
because it is not reasonable to say that Jews donated from all their possessions except for the precious stones and pearls! Consequently, it turns out that "the men came with the women" also refers to the shoham stones and the stones for the settings.
And also according to Rashi on the Torah - which is also taken from several midrashim119 - that "and the princes brought" refers to the princes of Israel - it is reasonable to say that just as there was "the men came with the women" regarding the rest of the Children of Israel,
so too was it regarding the donations of the princes,
that their women donated
(the shoham stones and the stones for the settings)
before their men
(the princes),
all the more so from ordinary Jewish women. As is simple,
it is not possible to say that all women preceded their men in their donations,
except for the wives of the princes! And especially Elisheva, the wife of Nachshon ben Aminadav
(prince of the tribe of Yehudah),
who was of distinguished lineage.120
And in addition to this -
[and with this we will fulfill the custom on the Sabbath day to speak about a matter in Rashi]
- this very matter requires explanation,
why does Rashi specifically explain that "the princes" means the princes of Israel and not "clouds"
(according to the explanation of the Gemara in the Babylonian Talmud).
And especially since this is not contrary to the plain meaning of the verse - for Rashi already explained thus in Parshat Lech Lecha121
[and all the more so and a fortiori:
In many places Rashi explains an explanation even though we do not find that Rashi explains thus again:
certainly in our case, where Rashi already explained thus according to the plain meaning of the verse].
Furthermore - and this is the main point:
According to Rashi's explanation
(that "princes" means the princes of Israel)
several difficulties arise in the plain meaning of the verse
(in contrast to according to the explanation of the Gemara that this means "clouds," where everything is smooth):
a) Regarding the donations of the Mishkan, it is stated in the verse115 "and they brought him yet a freewill offering morning by morning." The question arises in the plain meaning of the verse
(as the question of the midrash122):
"Did they bring in the morning? Did they not bring at noon?"
According to the explanation of the Gemara, this is understandable - because "morning by morning" comes to teach "that precious stones and pearls descended for Israel, as it is said, 'And the princes brought the shoham stones,'
the Tanna taught: 'princes' literally,"
"clouds." But according to Rashi, the aforementioned question remains as to why it says "morning by morning."
b) How can one say that "the community completed everything, as it is said 'and the work was sufficient,'"
"and there was extra" - when the Jews did not bring the shoham stones and the stones for the settings for the ephod and the breastplate?!
And further precise points.123 And one could elaborate on such matters,
but it is still a festival - we will not elaborate on this. And give to the wise, and he will become wiser still.124
From this there is also a lesson in connection with the time of the Giving of our Torah:
The quality of the women of Israel
(that they came to give the donations for the Mishkan before the men)
again emphasizes the great mission and great privilege that was given to the women and daughters of Israel,
and especially in the three mitzvos of lighting candles of Shabbos Kodesh and Yom Tov, Challah
(the kashrus of eating and drinking), Niddah
(family purity)
— whose acronym is "HaCheN"125
(Hadlakas Ner, Challah,
Niddah),
because through the observance of these three mitzvos one attains "chen" (grace).
And although it is written126 "Grace is deceitful and beauty is vain; a woman who fears Hashem, she shall be praised,"
nevertheless, the inner explanation of this is known127,
that "Grace is deceitful etc." is specifically when the essential thing is lacking
("a woman who fears Hashem, she shall be praised"),
but when there is a "woman who fears Hashem,"
then "she shall be praised" also for her "grace" and "beauty" in their simple sense. And furthermore:
The perfection is that a "woman who fears Hashem" should descend into
(she shall be praised with)
grace and beauty of holiness.
Analogous to the explanation of the Mishnah128 "Three crowns are they: the crown of Torah, the crown of Kehunah, and the crown of Malchus; and the crown of a good name rises above them,"
that "the crown of a good name"
(analogous to grace and beauty)
is not a crown in its own right,
but after one has the three crowns,
then "the crown of a good name rises above them,"
because the perfection of all three crowns is specifically when it is expressed in a "good name,"
and in grace and beauty in their simple sense.
And to such an extent that "twenty-six generations did Derech Eretz precede the Torah"129 — because in order to have the perfection of the Torah, one must have "Derech Eretz"
(the crown of a good name).
This is seemingly not understood:
What value does "Derech Eretz" have in relation to the matter of Torah? No matter how great the matter of "Derech Eretz" may be — it does not compare to Torah, which is the Will and Wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He130,
"the hidden treasure" of the Holy One, blessed be He131,
so at the time of receiving the Torah — what place does it have to occupy oneself with Derech Eretz?
One sees from this,
how much the matter of "Derech Eretz" is relevant to Torah,
and to such an extent that "twenty-six generations did Derech Eretz precede the Torah" — because despite the greatness of the superiority of Torah
(the Torah and Wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He, etc.)
"Derech Eretz" has some value relative to it,
at least to be a kind of vessel as a preparation for the drawing down of the Giving of the Torah
("Derech Eretz preceded the Torah").
As this matter is also emphasized on daf 44 in Maseches Sotah — the portion of this Shabbos before the time of the Giving of our Torah in this year
(according to the custom to learn Maseches Sotah during the days of Sefirah, a daf per day, a daf per day132)
— "The Torah taught Derech Eretz" — which is the transition to continue the discussion in the farbrengen preceding this133 regarding the special emphasis on the matter of Ahavas Yisrael and Achdus Yisrael on daf (44)
in Maseches Sotah:
In daf 44 we see several matters of Ahavas Yisrael,
but several of them are also emphasized in other dapim
(and places)
in Shas,
and we do not see the novelty in this specifically on this daf. However, there is one matter — which is a novelty that is stated specifically on this daf:
Regarding those who go out to war, there are in the Torah134 three exceptions where the Kohen says to the people
(and the officer announces135)
that these three types should return home and not go to war:
"Who is the man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it?",
"And who is the man who has planted a vineyard and has not redeemed it?",
"And who is the man who has betrothed a woman and has not taken her?" — "Let him go and return to his house etc."
The Gemara learns
(on daf 44 in Maseches Sotah)
from the order of the verses:
"The Rabbis taught: 'Who has built,' 'who has planted,' 'who has betrothed' —
the Torah taught Derech Eretz, that a person should build a house and plant a vineyard and afterwards marry a woman."
From this one sees the greatness of the emphasis in the Torah on Derech Eretz and Ahavas Yisrael — to such an extent that despite the greatness of the superiority of Torah
(which is incomparable to "Derech Eretz",
as above)
— the Torah itself "changed" and "altered" and established the order of the verses
("who has built",
"who has planted",
"who has betrothed")
— in order to teach
("the Torah taught")
a matter of "Derech Eretz". How a Jew should conduct himself in his conduct in the world!
On this daf 44
(in Maseches Sotah)
one sees another great and even more wondrous novelty regarding Ahavas Yisrael:
Another category regarding which the Torah says "Let him go and return to his house"
(and not go to war)
is — "the man who is fearful and fainthearted"136,
and the reason for this
(why "let him go and return to his house")
is — in order to prevent "lest he melt the heart of his brothers as his heart"136.
It is stated in the Mishnah
(at the end of page 44a)
The opinion of Rabbi Yosi HaGelili: "The fearful and fainthearted one is he who is afraid because of the transgressions that are in his hand; therefore the Torah attributed to him all these
(he built a house, planted a vineyard, and betrothed a woman137)
so that he should return because of them,"
"so that the return should be attributed to this, and he should not be ashamed to say that he is afraid and returns because of the transgressions in his hand"137.
And in this, the aspect of Ahavas Yisrael is expressed in the most wondrous manner:
When an army goes to wage war,
the soldiers are simply placed in danger of mortal danger
[because this concerns a war in a natural manner where casualties can fall, G-d forbid].
And it is understood and simple that when one sends away the three types from war, it weakens the army
(although "He who keeps a commandment will know no evil thing"138,
nevertheless, according to nature, this weakens the entire army),
and it increases the danger of mortal danger for the soldiers. And the greatness of the matter of mortal danger is also simply understood, to the extent that mortal danger supersedes the entire Torah139.
On the other hand:
When a Jew is ashamed of the transgressions in his hand, this is incomparable to the mortal danger for the soldiers,
which supersedes the entire Torah. And on the contrary:
Shame over transgressions has a virtue,
that then repentance and atonement can come more quickly and deeply.
And regarding this, there is a virtue when other Jews see that he is ashamed
(and repents)
of his transgressions, because this strengthens the concept of "that they may hear and fear"139.
Nevertheless, the Torah says,
that in order to prevent shame from a Jew because of the transgressions in his hand, the Torah commanded that one send away from war three additional types of Jews,
"the man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it,"
"the man who has planted a vineyard and has not redeemed it,"
"the man who has betrothed a woman and has not taken her" — not looking at the fact that this will strengthen the mortal danger, and mortal danger supersedes the entire Torah!!
To such an extent is Ahavas Yisrael, that regarding "he built a new house,"
"planted a vineyard," and "betrothed a woman" — they would, from their own perspective, be allowed to go to war;
"נטע כרם" און "ארש אשה" - וואלט מען זיי מצד עצמם געלאזט גיין אין מלחמה;
but when it concerns "the fearful and fainthearted man,"
"he who is afraid because of the transgressions in his hand"
(and even a light transgression — like "he conversed between prayer and prayer"140 (between the laying of the tefillin of the hand and the tefillin of the head141),
i.e., he has subjugation of the heart and mind and all limbs,
but he conversed between the tefillin of the hand and the tefillin of the head),
who will certainly repent
(because if not,
he would also not obey when told "he shall go and return to his house")
— nevertheless, in order that he should not have any shame,
and that he should be able to confess quietly and repent secretly in an easy manner
(and not need to reveal his sin in public)
— the Torah innovates three commandments,
that also "he built a new house," "planted a vineyard," and "betrothed a woman" — "he should return because of them,"
in order "to cover for those who return because of the transgressions in their hand, so that they will not understand that they are sinners, and the one who sees him returning will say, 'Perhaps he built a house, or planted a vineyard, or betrothed a woman'"141.
This expresses Ahavas Yisrael in the most wondrous manner — incomparably more than is expressed in the matter of "the Torah taught derech eretz":
In "the Torah taught derech eretz," the Torah changes the order of the Torah for the sake of Ahavas Yisrael,
in order to teach a Jew derech eretz.
But in this matter, the Torah innovates three commandments,
and such commandments that increase the danger for the rest of the soldiers — for the sake of Ahavas Yisrael for a Jew,
that he should not have any shame because of the transgressions in his hand!
[Here he spoke about the lesson in the greatness of the matter of Ahavas Yisrael from the daily study in Rambam — in the laws of nullification,
that a significant item142, an item that stands143, and an item that is counted144 — is not nullified,
for the children of Israel are in the category of "a significant item," etc.,
because the entire world was created for the sake of Israel, etc. — included in the aforementioned sichah, section 9.
And continuing from this, he said:]
Jews are a "significant thing" not from themselves, heaven forbid,
but from the aspect of the Supreme One. Because on the contrary:
One who considers himself a significant thing due to his own virtues - this is a contradiction to the Supreme One,
as the Gemara says in Tractate Sotah 145
(which is learned during the days of the Omer as preparation for the Giving of the Torah 132)
"Any person who has haughtiness of spirit, the Holy One, blessed be He, said, 'I and he cannot dwell in the world
(in one place 146)
as it is said 147...
Haughty eyes and a broad heart, him I cannot,
do not read 'him' but rather 'with him I cannot'." And therefore it must be "not from it nor from part of it" 148
[even not an "eighth of an eighth" 148],
as the ruling in Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, section Orach Chaim 149.
This is indeed something tremendous:
It is not said that haughtiness is merely an undesirable thing,
and that it causes a descent in the person, etc.,
but rather incomparably worse than that:
Through haughtiness one "pushes aside the feet of the Shechinah" 150,
i.e., one "drives away" the Supreme One, as it were,
because "I and he cannot dwell in the world".
That is, simply,
that the existence of the haughty person is not negated,
he remains an existence,
but he is given a choice:
either "I" or "He"! Both things together cannot be! He has the choice to be an existence,
that is not negated,
but then the Supreme One cannot be there!
This further strengthens the insolence of the matter - the insolence towards Heaven - that through haughtiness one does not merely commit a wrong,
but thereby "drives away" the Supreme One, as it is!...
This is the general state of exile:
In the time of the Temple, Divinity was revealed,
"I and He" were together openly;
"אני והוא" זיינען געווען צוזאמען בגלוי;
but in the time of exile - there is insolence towards Heaven,
which temporarily causes that one "drives away" the Supreme One, as it were,
because "I and he cannot dwell in the world" - the general state of exile,
that "our signs we have not seen... and there is no one with us who knows until what" 151,
even "until what" one does not know the explanation.
And this comes from the aspect of insolence towards Heaven,
as it is said in the Mussaf prayer - "because of the hand that was sent forth in Your Sanctuary",
as is known the explanation of the Arizal on this 152
(and in several commentators on the prayer 153),
that in this way the Holy Temple could not have been destroyed,
but there is a "form of a hand...
beneath the wings of the Shechinah",
then it can be that "at the time of the destruction, a hand was sent into the Holy Temple and destroyed it,
and this is the hand that was sent forth in Your Sanctuary" 152,
the destruction of the Holy Temple,
and the "hand" brings the side of impurity into the "world"
("one place")
where "I and He" are found,
and brings it about that one is in exile for 1900 years!...
And there is none who opens a mouth or chirps!...
Jews indeed cry out with truth and with their whole heart, etc. - but
(as mentioned above section 68)
what is this considered relative to the fact that Jews have already been in exile for over 1900 years?!
One indeed cries out, etc. - but one sees in actuality that it has still not come,
it is a proof that one must still add something...
[The Rebbe shlita smiled and said:]
In continuation of what was discussed above regarding the study of Chumash,
and a matter in Rashi's commentary
(in accordance with the custom to speak a matter in Rashi's commentary on Shabbat),
the study of Rambam,
and other studies - it seemingly has a place
(since today is also Shabbat)
to also mention a matter in connection with Pirkei Avot,
according to the custom 154 to study Pirkei Avot on the Shabbatot between Pesach and Shavuot and the summer Shabbatot.
And although according to the custom
(as it is written in the Luach)
one does not say a chapter on this Shabbat
(they finished the sixth chapter last Shabbat,
and they begin again the first chapter next Shabbat)
- but
(the Rebbe shlita smiled)
when one begins and engages with a Jew - he cries out:
What does it mean that this Shabbat there is no chapter,
and he finds a solution:
He takes the conclusion of the chapter they learned last Shabbat and the beginning of the chapter they will learn next Shabbat,
and mixes them together and makes them into one thing
(until they become "out of chapter",
as will be explained),
and reveals their connection with this Shabbat,
the time of the Giving of our Torah:
At the conclusion of the sixth chapter
(the chapter of last Shabbat)
it says 155 "Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created only for His glory, etc.".
And "there is no glory except Torah"
(as it says earlier in the chapter 156).
And based on this, the connection to the time of the Giving of our Torah is understood - when the Almighty gave the Jews the Torah,
because of which all the creations in the world were created - "for His honor",
"there is no honor except Torah."
In addition to this:
After the conclusion of the chapter, we say the mishnah157 of "Rabbi Chananya ben Akashya says,
The Holy One, blessed be He, desired to merit Israel; therefore He gave them abundant Torah and mitzvos, as it is said,158 'Hashem desired for the sake of His righteousness to magnify the Torah and make it glorious.'"
And what the matter
("He gave them abundant Torah and mitzvos")
was at the Giving of the Torah,
when they gave the Jews the entire Torah,
including everything that a diligent student will in the future innovate159 - "He gave them abundant Torah and mitzvos."
And regarding this, the first chapter of Pirkei Avos
(which we will learn on the coming Shabbos)
has a connection to the time of the Giving of our Torah:
The chapter begins "Moshe received the Torah from Sinai, etc." - which was at the Giving of the Torah - "and transmitted it, etc.",
until the end of all generations.
Afterwards, the mishnah states,160
"The world stands on three things: on Torah, on service, and on acts of kindness." And this was also established at the Giving of the Torah - as our Sages said161 on the verse162 "The earth feared and was still",
that until the Giving of the Torah there was "the earth feared",
the opposite of "the world stands",
and the Giving of the Torah established that there should be "was still" - "the world stands"
(and exists163).
One sees from this that even on this Shabbos when we do not say a chapter - at the time when one begins with a Jew,
he takes the chapter before this and the chapter after this,
and makes them into one thing,
and in connection with the time of the Giving of our Torah!
Until one brings about that it becomes
(in a manner of)
"beyond chapter"
(we do not say any chapter on this Shabbos)
in a superior sense - above the matter of chapter. And one can say the explanation of this based on what is explained in Chassidus164 regarding our Sages' statement165 "one who studies Torah in chapters"
("and does not study constantly, constantly"166)
which is an undesirable thing - that this is from the term "a staff of sections",
"meaning that he and his Torah study are in a state of separation, etc.",
despite the fact that Torah is the entire existence of a Jew,
"our life and the length of our days."167 And on this Shabbos - one brings about that we do not study the "chapter",
it becomes "beyond chapter" in a superior sense - the opposite of "one who studies Torah in chapters",
in a manner of separation, etc.
And one can say that "one who studies Torah in chapters" also exists in holiness,
as the explanation of this is according to its simple meaning - he studies Torah in chapters,
as Torah is divided into chapters
[as emphasized in Maseches Avos which is called "Pirkei Avos"].
And the matter of this is - similar to the interruptions between one portion and another
(as Rashi explains at the beginning of Parshat Vayikra),
"And what purpose did the interruptions serve?
To give Moshe respite to contemplate between one portion and another and between one topic and another",
and from the interruptions in the study of Moshe Rabbeinu from the Holy One, blessed be He,
we learn incidentally168 "a fortiori for an ordinary person learning from an ordinary person" that there must be interruptions between one portion and another in order "to give respite to contemplate, etc."
And regarding this, one can say the explanation in a superior sense of "one who studies Torah in chapters"
(even though Torah is "our life and the length of our days",
what does it mean that one studies it "in chapters"?!)
- in order to give respite between one topic and another to contemplate with understanding and comprehension, etc.
And may it be His will that all these matters should add further in the study of Torah lessons,
including - the lessons of Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya
(Chumash, Tehillim, Tanya).
And regarding this, in all the campaigns,
beginning with the three campaigns that are specific to Jewish women and girls
("Beis Yaakov")
- the acronym "Chen" - lighting Shabbos and Yom Tov candles,
kashrus of eating and drinking, and family purity.
And as has been discussed many times, the matter of lighting Shabbos and Yom Tov candles applies to Jewish girls immediately when they reach the age of chinuch,
a daughter of two or three years. And as has already been tried in many places and was successful. And this brought about that the mazal began to shine,
and it goes and increases in light,
in a manner of ascending in holiness.169
And regarding this, one should increase doing in all matters of Torah and mitzvos - in all these matters discussed above,
and those discussed also before the time of the Giving of our Torah in this year,
and in past years. And also in this there should be increase and going and light.
And this brings that the Almighty illuminates the life of every Jew - with children, life, and ample sustenance, and in all of them, ample.
And in general – the three general matters that include all the needs of man – "house",
"vineyard" and "wife" – that the Almighty blesses with success in all these matters,
and gives strength that one should educate – together with his wife – the members of the household,
with rest of the body and rest of the soul,
knowing that one has perfection in all these matters,
and it should be "for 170 when a man takes a new wife, he shall be free for his house
(which also includes "built a house" and "planted a vineyard" 171)
one year, and shall rejoice his wife whom he has taken".
And in the broad sense, this also applies to all the years throughout their lives after the first year of marriage,
because in marriage according to the law of Moses and Israel,
the "Shechinah is between them" 172,
an ongoing effect at every moment,
as the Rogatchover explained 173
[we are accustomed to mention the Rogatchover each time].
And known also is the story
(as has already been publicized),
that when the Rogatchover told a certain great scholar the novel idea that the acquisition of marriage is an ongoing effect that is renewed every moment – that great scholar said to him:
If so – he gives him a mazal tov! The Rogatchover asked him,
Why are you suddenly giving a mazal tov?!
He answered,
Because according to this novel idea
(that marriage is a new acquisition every moment)
it turns out that you just got married now!
From this it is understood that also after the first year of marriage there must be the feeling that his wife is a "new wife",
and accordingly there must be
(a kind of)
the matter of "he shall be free for his house...
and shall rejoice his wife whom he has taken". As everyone understands simply that even if it is several years after the wedding, there are matters where there must be "he shall be free for his house...
and shall rejoice his wife",
similar to how it was in the first year at the time of the wedding and the "Seven Blessings"
(but now one does not need to have "new faces" as was needed during the "Seven Blessings").
One of the matters in which "he shall be free for his house...
and shall rejoice his wife" is expressed after the first year – is in the matter of educating boys and girls. Known is the saying of the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab) of blessed memory
(as printed and publicized 174):
Just as the laying of tefillin every day is a Torah commandment upon every Jew,
so too is there a complete obligation upon every Jew to think every day about the education and guidance of his children and household members in the way of Torah and His commandments.
And in order for the education to be proper – one must also have assistance from his wife,
and not merely assistance and cooperation,
but on the contrary – the main part of education is through the women and daughters of Israel 175.
Until an education in a manner that one kindles "when you raise up the lamps" 99,
"until the flame rises by itself" 176,
which is the true essence of education – that the one being educated does not need to return each time to the educator for advice and wait for encouragement etc.,
but a true educator kindles "that the flame rises by itself".
And may it be His will that this
("when you raise up the lamps" in the matter of education)
should be a proximate preparation for "I show you the lamps of Zion" 177,
immediately in our time,
in the true and complete redemption,
through our righteous Mashiach,
and the prayer will be fulfilled "Show us, Hashem, Your kindness, and grant us Your salvation" 178,
"to dwell honor in our land" 179,
and the perfection of the blessing in this – that "to dwell honor in our land" does not come simply,
but specifically through our righteous Mashiach and through the Holy One, blessed be He,
and speedily in our actual days,
immediately in our time – even less than "the blink of an eye" 67.
And "with our youths and with our elders ... with our sons and with our daughters" 180 we go to our holy land,
"a land which ... the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year" 181,
to Jerusalem the holy city,
"on the holy mountain in Jerusalem" 182,
and there itself – to the third Holy Temple,
"the Sanctuary, Hashem, Your hands established" 87,
"Hashem shall reign forever and ever" 88,
and as souls in bodies,
and speedily in our actual days.
[Here he spoke about several practical instructions,
including – about increasing in Torah study,
and especially – in the inner dimension of Torah,
the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
outward within the person himself,
until the actual outward – all this is included in the above edited sicha section 12.
And continuing from this he said:]
In our generation, the president of our generation has ruled as a halachah,
so every single one of the children of Israel, male and female, in our generation has an obligation - and the president of our generation has made him
(and her)
an emissary,
and given the blessing and empowerment for this - to study the inner dimension of the Torah,
as it has been revealed in the teachings of Chassidus,
Chabad Chassidus.
And as discussed many times,
also women and girls are obligated in this study of the inner dimension of the Torah as it has been revealed in the teachings of Chassidus,
the content of which is knowledge of G-d,
to believe in G-d,
to unify Him,
love of Him and fear of Him, etc. - commandments in which women are also obligated
(exactly like men),
"whose obligation is constant, etc.,"
and "what is the way to love of Him and fear of Him,
when a person contemplates His works, etc., and sees from them His wisdom, etc., immediately he loves, etc., and feels a great desire to know the great Name,"
and this is included,
and especially,
through the study of the teachings of Chassidus,
which enables understanding of all these matters with comprehension and perception.
In addition to this:
One sees in practice that through the study of Chassidus,
which enables understanding with comprehension and perception of the foundations of Judaism
(which one attains through the study of Chassidus)
- faith in G-d,
the unity of G-d,
love of G-d and fear of G-d,
service of G-d in general,
Divine providence,
the reasons for the commandments
(in the inner dimension and root of the matters),
faith in the coming of Moshiach,
etc. - one comes to vitality and inwardness and completeness in the service of G-d. And in the language of the verse:
"Know the G-d of your father and serve Him with a whole heart,"
through knowledge of G-d,
"knowledge of the reality of the chain of descent"
(which is "a great and exalted commandment, and indeed it surpasses all of them")
- the content of the teachings of Chassidus - brings about "and serve Him with a whole heart."
Therefore there is a place,
and moreover,
a merit and commandment - as our Rabbis, our presidents, have said - that also women and daughters of Israel should study the teachings of Chassidus
(beginning with the book of Tanya,
the Written Torah of Chassidus),
and not only in a superficial manner and only the principles of Chassidus and the matters that pertain to the simple folk,
but also with comprehension and perception
(each one - according to her level)
in the deep topics of Chassidus,
just like the study of Chassidus by men. And especially since "greater understanding
(was given)
to a woman more than to a man."
And the necessity of the matter is even stronger in the latter generations - as one sees in practice that in the latter generations,
and especially in our generation,
the study of Chassidus is spreading among women and daughters of Israel
[although in previous generations only exceptional women had great knowledge in understanding Chassidus]:
Even though their primary mission is
(not the study of Torah, but)
to educate and establish "the legions of G-d,"
sons and daughters engaged in Torah and commandments,
so that through them there should be "they recognized Him first"
[ "as in the days of your going out from the land of Egypt" ],
and they must devote themselves entirely to this work,
"with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might,"
for specifically through this effort is there a complete education - nevertheless, one sees that in our generation especially, there is a need for comprehension and perception in matters of Judaism in order that one can oneself perform completely the service that the Torah demands.
And especially since due to the decline of the generations, one inevitably comes into contact with external wisdoms, etc.
(not as it was in the earlier generations),
which can bring
(if one does not have the correct comprehension and perception of the foundations of Judaism)
to questions and errors in Torah and matters of Judaism, G-d forbid
[which is one of the reasons that in the latter generations all the great ones of Israel ruled that "it is a time to act for G-d, etc.,"
and they took practical action and established schools for girls]
- therefore now there is an absolute necessity,
"a commandment and an obligation,"
that also women and girls should have comprehension and perception in knowledge of G-d and the foundations of the Torah,
through the study of the teachings of Chassidus,
in order to have
(for themselves and for their children, etc.)
a strong foundation in Judaism and not come to any errors in matters of Judaism.
[And it is understood and simple that in these generations it will not be accepted by her when one pushes her off with an answer that she does not need to understand, etc.].
Moreover:
The study of Chassidus, which gives understanding of the foundations of Judaism etc., is today an absolute necessity so that Jewish women and girls should succeed in their primary mission - the education of Jewish boys and girls,
beginning with their own children,
and also other children
(as "whoever teaches the son of his friend Torah...
is considered as if he gave birth to him")
- as we see in recent generations
(and especially in this country)
"a great deed,"
with the consent of the great ones of Israel,
that the primary education of young children
(boys and girls)
is through women and girls
(of course,
in a manner permitted according to the Shulchan Aruch).
We see in practice,
a great deed,
that in order to truly succeed in educating one's children
(one's own children at home,
and children in school)
and to implant in them faith in G-d,
love of G-d and fear of G-d etc. - the mother needs
(or sister),
or the teacher and educator,
herself to have knowledge
(not only in Torah, commandments, and festivals and the like,
which one teaches with the children - what is the novelty,
but also)
in the foundations of the Torah and the principles of Judaism,
knowledge of G-d,
service of G-d,
faith in G-d,
His oneness and His love and His fear etc.,
love of Israel and honor of Israel,
and the reasons for the commandments etc.,
and not only in a superficial manner in the main subjects
(the alphabet of the foundations of the Torah),
but with understanding and comprehension,
because specifically then one has a stronger influence on the children, since one oneself has a strong foundation
(with understanding and comprehension)
in these matters,
in addition to this, that then one has importance in the eyes of the children,
when they see that their educator does not merely pick up bits and pieces in the foundations of the Torah,
but she also has a broad knowledge in these matters.
And those who argue and object that one did not conduct oneself thus in previous generations etc. - but then one also did not study external wisdoms,
and then one also did not need to protect the study of proper conduct,
whereas now one does study external wisdoms,
and one also needs to protect proper conduct - he does not pay attention to this,
that today we need kosher teachers and female teachers,
even according to the fulfillment of the seven commandments of the children of Noah for the settlement of the world:
But what "bothers" him...
- when one teaches a little girl that she should love the Most High,
Who feeds and sustains all etc.!
If only that objector would believe with truth that the Most High gives him his livelihood!...
And the proof for this is from him himself:
If he had that faith - he would not be one who encroaches on boundaries,
and would not conduct himself contrary to the good and the upright,
with theft and robbery and the like,
thinking that this is the only way, heaven forbid, to obtain a livelihood or honor.
To this is added another severe matter:
If he conducts himself improperly himself
(but he does not harm another)
- he indeed needs a correction,
but along with this we say that "a transgression does not extinguish Torah,"
and he receives reward for his study of Torah.
But if he becomes a harm to the public - we say to him:
first of all, "be heavy and sit in your house,"
you can conduct yourself as you wish - but do so upon yourself in a chamber within a chamber;
קענסט זיך פירן ווי דו ווילסט - אבער טו דאס בא זיך אין חדר לפנים מחדר;
you have nails - use them on yourself;
האסט נעגל - נוץ זיי אויף זיך אליין;
you want to do harmful things - do them on yourself;
ווילסט טאן דברים מזיקים - טו זיי אויף זיך אליין;
you want to cry out "I and nothing else,"
or other things of the like - use them all on yourself:
but why do you come to bother another Jew?!
The one who causes harm argues:
It is stated in Iggeret HaKodesh that "concerning the one harmed, it has already been decreed from heaven, and there are many agents for the Omnipresent,"
accordingly, it is from whichever angle you look:
if the Most High does not want the other to be harmed,
nothing will help and no one will be able to harm him:
and if "concerning the one harmed, it has already been decreed from heaven" that he should be harmed, it will happen anyway,
even without his effort,
because "there are many agents for the Omnipresent,"
so what complaint can one have against him
(the one who causes harm)?!
The Alter Rebbe says, however, there in that place,
that if he harms the other, it comes from the "wickedness of his choice" and he is liable for it.
[For this is one of the reasons why Pharaoh, king of Egypt, was punished,
even though there was a decree from above "And they shall serve them and afflict them four hundred years"* - because Pharaoh did not do it because of the decree,
but rather because of the "wickedness of his choice",
and therefore he did more than was required by the decree (as explained in the commentaries of the Rambam).
In order to transition to good things - this is the place to arouse
(as discussed many times),
that standing immediately before the beginning of the summer days,
it is an appropriate time to ensure that Jewish children should find themselves during the summer days in a place and environment
(a summer camp and the like)
permeated with fear of G-d and love of G-d and love of Israel and the actual fulfillment of the commandments.
And even the children who have already been registered in other summer camps and the like - one must not despair of a Jew,
and one must endeavor even a hundred times over to ensure that the children find themselves during the summer days among lovers of G-d and fearers of G-d and observers of all the commandments,
below ten handbreadths,
without simplifications!
And when one will endeavor in this and speak words that come from the heart,
and especially by also showing a living example - then the words will enter the heart and accomplish their effect.
Regarding this, they also announced about the Torah gathering that will take place on Isru Chag,
as is done on every Isru Chag of the three pilgrimage festivals,
and especially on Isru Chag of the Festival of Shavuot,
the time of the giving of our Torah.
And especially according to the well-known story of the Chassidim,
that in Lubavitch they used to call the Festival of Shavuot, by way of a witticism, by the name "Festival of the Matzos".
And the reason for the matter:
On Passover and Sukkot it was difficult for the rabbis
(the teachers of righteousness)
to travel from their places to Lubavitch,
since on Passover there are many questions in matters of Passover,
both before Passover and on the festival of Passover itself;
סיי לפני הפסח סיי בחג הפסח עצמו;
regarding this, on Sukkot there are also many questions concerning the four species and the like
(and regarding this, on Passover and Sukkot there were matters and questions from which comes the income of the rabbi, etc.)
— unlike on the Festival of Shavuot,
which is only two days,
they chose this festival as the festival on which to travel to Lubavitch.
And therefore they called the Festival of Shavuot, by way of a witticism, by the name "Festival of the Teachers of Righteousness",
because this was the "festival" when the "teachers of righteousness"
(teachers of righteousness,
i.e., rabbis)
used to come to Lubavitch.
Accordingly,
since this is a festival that is particularly connected with rabbis, teachers of righteousness,
it is understood,
how on Isru Chag of this festival the matter of "Torah gathering" is even more emphasized
(and as follows).
And one may say,
that since the aforementioned "witticism" is connected with Jews - there is certainly in this a lesson in the service of man,
because with Jews it must be "all your deeds shall be for the sake of Heaven" and "in all your ways know Him",
one must find in every thing
(also in a "witticism")
the "for the sake of Heaven" and the "know Him".
And the matter:
When one contemplates the content of the matter,
one sees indeed that the true essence of "Festival of the Matzos" is actually on the Festival of Shavuot,
the time of the giving of our Torah:
Simply, "Festival of the Matzos" is the Festival of Passover,
the time of our freedom,
the time of the exodus from Egypt;
זמן יציאת מצרים;
regarding this, the Festival of Sukkot is also connected with "commandments"
(the exodus from Egypt),
for a part of the commandment of dwelling in the sukkah is the knowledge "because I caused the children of Israel to dwell in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt" - but from where do these two festivals come
(which are connected with "commandments")
— not from the "exodus from Egypt" alone which was on the fifteenth of Nissan before the giving of the Torah,
and not from the "because I caused the children of Israel to dwell in sukkot when I brought them out of the land of Egypt"
(the clouds of glory were - as brought also in the Shulchan Aruch)
before the giving of the Torah,
but rather from the "time of the giving of our Torah",
the Festival of Shavuot,
from the commandment of the Torah that there must be the matter of remembrance of the exodus from Egypt on the Festival of Passover and on the Festival of Sukkot!
And like the well-known words of the Rambam
(in the commentary on the Mishnah and in many places),
that the fulfillment of the commandment of circumcision is not from the commandment of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Abraham our father
(as recounted in the Torah),
but rather from that which was commanded to Moses our teacher at the giving of the Torah.
Just as it is with the commandment of circumcision,
the commandment that was given as a covenant to Abraham and to his seed after him,
so too is it
(and all the more so and certainly)
regarding all the commandments,
including the commandments of remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt on the festival of Passover and remembrance of the clouds of glory on Sukkot — that their fulfillment is only because at the time of the Giving of the Torah the Almighty commanded regarding all the commandments,
for "I am" and "You shall not have" include all the 248 positive commandments and 365 negative commandments
(as explained elsewhere),
and because of this there exists the concept of "the festival of matzot" on the festival of Passover and on the festival of Sukkot.
It therefore follows,
that the true essence and source of "the festival of matzot" is actually the festival of Shavuot,
the time of the giving of our Torah!
That from this aforementioned concept
(that the Giving of the Torah is the foundation and cause of the fulfillment of all the commandments)
emerges a lesson in the service of man:
When a Jew goes out to engage in matters of Torah and Judaism,
in any matter whatsoever,
it can be that one influences a Jew to do this because his teacher tells him, or his father and mother or his older brother tell him, or even due to "fear of the strap" and the like — one must know that the foundation of everything is not due to other reasons, but because thus the Almighty commanded at the Giving of the Torah.
And furthermore:
The truth is,
that the very matters of honoring father and mother and older brother and the like — one must also do because thus one was commanded at the Giving of the Torah,
and this is due to the new concept of the giving of the Torah that occurs each and every year at the time of the Giving of the Torah,
when the Torah is given anew with a new storm,
and "just as there [it was given] with awe and fear, etc., so too here, etc.,"
with all the details in the Torah.
From this one also has a strong encouragement in the service of G-d:
Since the fulfillment of all the commandments is due to the concept of the Giving of the Torah — it is understood,
that just as at the time of the giving of the Torah the Jews had the manna, Miriam's well, and the clouds of glory,
and in the well-known phrase "the Torah was given only to those who eat the manna,"
so too is it during the service of a Jew that is connected to the Giving of the Torah,
that the Almighty provides a Jew with all his needs!
And as the Rambam writes regarding the physical promises in the Torah,
that their simple meaning is,
in the physical realm,
but their ultimate purpose is so that their hearts be free to engage in Torah and its wisdom.
Furthermore:
Not only does the Almighty give the ability for engaging in Torah and commandments in general,
but the power and ability is — to fulfill them with ultimate perfection,
"as is proper."
And as the Gemara says "Abaye said: If my mother
(the nurse)
would tell me, 'Bring the kutach'
(even a command of a light task would have distracted me)
I would not have learned
(I would not have studied as I studied)."
This is indeed a wondrous concept:
It is only about a "light task" of bringing near the "kutach"
[and it should be noted,
that "kutach" is a dairy food that is connected to the time of the giving of our Torah],
not bringing it from a distant place,
but only "bring near" — nevertheless Abaye says "I would not have studied as I studied"!
[And it can be explained,
that the phrase "I would not have learned" means furthermore,
that this constitutes neglect of Torah,
for since "I would not have studied as I studied" (as Abaye could learn) this is already neglect of Torah].
It follows,
that in order for a Jew to be able to study Torah "as is proper,"
one must prevent from him even a "light task,"
even the lightest bother!
From this it is understood,
that when a Jew rises in the morning,
it is "in his hand" and in his choice what kind of day this shall be:
If he chooses to study Torah in the proper manner,
then as with Abaye, all matters of bother and confusion are removed from him,
even a "light task,"
because from Above all his matters are provided to him,
the Almighty guarantees him a good, pleasant, and long life,
without any confusions,
like the matter of the manna.
And when one has rest, joy, and a good heart — one becomes
(in the language of the Rambam)
"free to engage in wisdom, etc.,"
until the Rambam concludes his book "And the occupation of the entire world
(including "all inhabitants of the world")
shall be only to know G-d...
and they shall attain knowledge of their Creator according to the capacity of man, as it is said: 'For the earth shall be filled with knowledge of G-d as the waters cover the sea.'"
That this is also connected with the Giving of the Torah - because "for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the L-rd" includes both the species of the desert,
the species of animals,
the species of vegetation and even inanimate matter,
and as it is said "and all flesh shall see together that the mouth of the L-rd has spoken",
and "all flesh" means also the flesh itself as inanimate matter,
until the inanimate within inanimate - that this was also the case at the time of the Giving of the Torah,
when the entire world "absorbed" within itself the revelation of the Giving of the Torah,
in the language of the Midrash,
that at the time of the Giving of the Torah "a bird did not chirp... an ox did not low... rather the world was silent and still",
all heard the utterance of "I am the L-rd your G-d" and "you shall not have",
for "the utterance 'I am' includes all 248 positive commandments,
and 'you shall not have' includes all 365 negative commandments, and therefore we heard only 'I am' and 'you shall not have' from the mouth of the Almighty, as our Sages said
['I am' and 'you shall not have' we heard from the mouth of the Almighty, as it is written: 'G-d spoke once, these two I heard']
because they are the principles of the entire Torah",
and from this it descended into the 620 letters of the Ten Commandments which in gematria equal 'crown'.
That this is also connected with the revelation of the future to come,
when there will be "the crown of a good name rising above them",
in addition to "the crown of Torah and the crown of priesthood and the crown of kingship",
that it becomes "your eyes shall see the king in his beauty",
the crown of the Messiah,
the crown of a good name,
speedily in our days, literally,
And out of joy and goodness of heart.
We return to our subject - regarding the Torah gathering that is held every Isru Chag,
and especially on Isru Chag of the time of the Giving of our Torah,
the Festival of Matzot.
And as has been spoken several times,
that may it be His will that eventually all these novellae in Torah that were said at the previous Torah gatherings should be published in print,
and all the more so at this Torah gathering.
That through this one benefits the many,
and there is no place to practice "humility" and the like regarding this,
because it is a great merit to publish novellae in Torah,
and especially according to what is explained in Chassidic discourses
(discourses of Shavuot)
the distinction between "lowliness" and "humility",
that the matter of lowliness
(claiming "who am I and what am I")
is contrary to the will of the L-rd and contrary to the building and contrary to the Torah and the purpose of the entire world
(as is also explained in a discourse of the middle Rebbe which is found in print,
and with the help of the L-rd it will be reprinted very soon,
very soon)
rather the service of the L-rd must be in a manner of "humility",
that is, a self-nullification that is connected with "and I shall walk in a broad place".
That just as this is regarding printing,
so too is it regarding the Torah gathering itself,
that everyone who is relevant to this must participate in this gathering,
and even one who has a doubt about the matter,
or one who can participate only as a "listener" - the doubt is treated stringently,
because this is a doubt in a matter of "length of our days",
consequently it is certain that one must actually participate in this gathering.
And if one will not be able to manage it in one time - one should make a continuation of it after this,
as is customary.
And the main thing is - that the collections of novellae in Torah from this gathering should be published,
and this should be as soon as possible,
the earlier in actuality,
for this will also effect for the future,
that one will demand more from oneself,
as the saying: one who has one hundred wants two hundred, etc.
It is also customary that during the farbrengen one announces a matter as participation in the gathering,
at least briefly - we will stop on a matter that is connected with the Giving of the Torah.
In the Mechilta it is brought regarding the Giving of the Torah: "A parable of a mortal king who entered a province. His servants said to him: decree decrees upon them
[and in another version it states:
"decree decrees upon us"],
he said to them: no,
when they accept my kingship I will decree decrees upon them,
for if they do not accept my kingship they will not accept my decrees,
so said the Omnipresent to Israel: I am the L-rd your G-d...
I am He whose kingship you have accepted upon yourselves...
and just as you have accepted My kingship upon yourselves,
accept My decrees".
That the distinction between these two matters
(the acceptance of the kingship and the acceptance of the decrees)
is explained in several places:
From the aspect of accepting the kingship, all the laws of the king apply,
as the Rambam brings in the Laws of Kings that "anyone who rebels against the king of Israel, the king has permission to kill him,
even if he decreed upon one of the rest of the people to go to a certain place and he did not go, or that he should not leave his house and he left, he is liable for death."
And in the manner of the Gemara that tells about one who "made a gesture with a pointer before the king,"
they judged him to death.
What is understood from this is that the result of "their acceptance of My kingship" at the time of the giving of the Torah is,
that every commandment of the king
(of the Most High)
has a very great force,
all the more so and certainly from "one who made a gesture with a pointer before the king,"
that is, it has the force of the acceptance of the kingship of the Holy One, blessed be He,
(and the opposite of this is a matter of rebellion).
However, from the aspect of "they accepted My decrees," only the parameters of each decree with its conditions apply,
consequently there are differences between testimonies, statutes, and laws,
positive commandments and negative commandments,
commandments that are from the Torah and commandments that are from the Scribes,
that is, differences in the punishments and so forth.
[And as explained in Chassidus,
that these are the two matters of tallis and tefillin:
tallis is its matter "the spread of the King,"
acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven,
encompassing;
מקיף;
and tefillin is their matter the subjugation of the heart and the mind,
acceptance of the yoke of commandments,
internal].
According to this, a question arises in the words of the Mechilta:
Since the Most High said "when they accept My kingship I will decree decrees upon them...
accept My kingship upon you,
accept My decrees."
That is, that the acceptance of the kingship and the acceptance of the decrees are not two separate matters,
rather the acceptance of the decrees is dependent on the acceptance of the kingship - the question arises,
how can there be differences in the punishments between the decrees,
when the acceptance of the decrees is founded upon the acceptance of the kingship,
that is, one accepts the decrees not as decrees in themselves,
but rather as decrees of a king.
For from the aspect of this matter of the acceptance of the kingship,
only what constitutes the will of the king is relevant,
consequently there cannot be any difference whether the will of the king is a matter of a positive commandment or a negative commandment - and as the Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya that from the aspect of the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, there is no difference between the commandments,
rather one must fulfill all of them because they are the commandments of the Holy One, blessed be He!
So since the fulfillment of all the commandments must be because they are the commands of the king - why do we see differences in the punishments,
that some have severe punishments,
and others have a punishment of monetary fine or lashes or even no punishment at all.
The Alter Rebbe indeed explains there in Tanya that "and according to the value and divisions of the aspects of the blemish in the soul and its root in the supernal realms, so are the divisions of the aspects of the refinement and the punishment in Gehinnom or in this world, for every iniquity and sin a specific punishment to refine and remove the filth and the blemish, and likewise those liable for death and excision do not all blemish equally" - but this is a reason that is not brought in Halachah,
and in general one cannot say that the reason for a Halachah is from the aspect of a blemish in the supernal Sefiros!
[And as explained in many places that although according to Kabbalah it works out in a certain manner,
one cannot, however, mix Kabbalah with the revealed aspect and Halachah (and as the Tzemach Tzedek writes that "we do not derive from the homiletic, etc.").
This is indeed a part of the Torah of truth,
and it is called "the wisdom of truth" - but the order of study in Halachah is that one does not mix matters of Kabbalah with it].
One also cannot say that the difference
(in punishments)
between commandments is a matter that has no reason,
because not all matters in the Torah are in the manner of statutes that one has no permission to ponder after them,
and in general it is not a method in the study of the Torah to say that every matter in the Torah is a thing that has no reason.
And on the contrary - specifically the matters that the Gemara
(and the commentators of the Torah and Rashi)
explicitly brings that they are statutes,
have upon themselves the limitation of "you have no permission to ponder after them,"
however most of the commandments of the Torah are laws and testimonies, etc.
One also cannot say that this is a matter of Aggadah.
[Since the aforementioned Gemara ("He who gestures, etc.") is not in the section of Choshen Mishpat of the Torah (where "He who wishes to become wise should engage in monetary laws"*), but rather in Tractate Chagigah,
in the section of Aggadah,
and there itself — a story about a gentile king],
and we do not derive [laws] neither from the Halachos
(and certainly not)
nor from the Aggados — because this is brought into Halachah in the laws of the king
(as above),
and also the Mechilta is not a book of Aggadah,
rather it is a book of Halachos,
as one brings many Halachos from the Mechilta.
Furthermore:
This matter is brought not only in the Mechilta,
rather it is an explicit Mishnah
(where "if one erred in a Mishnah, he returns"*):
The Mishnah says in Berachos: "Why was the portion of Shema preceded by 'VeHayah Im Shamoa'?
So that one should first accept upon himself the yoke of the kingdom of heaven, and afterwards accept upon himself the yoke of the commandments" — one sees explicitly,
that the "yoke of the commandments" is founded upon "the acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven first",
consequently, the same question arises here — if so,
why are there differences in punishments between commandments?
Regarding this, the question is turned the other way:
Since "the earthly kingdom is like the heavenly kingdom",
and one sees in actuality regarding the heavenly kingdom,
that there are differences in punishments between commandments
(although they are founded upon the acceptance of the kingdom,
as understood from the Mechilta and from the Mishnah)
— one would have had to learn from this regarding "the earthly kingdom",
that if "he decreed upon one of the rest of the people, etc.",
this should not bring with it the most severe punishment!
To change the Halachah one indeed cannot,
because it is explicit, etc. — but a question remains in the understanding of the matter:
Since "the earthly kingdom is like the heavenly kingdom" — why do we see that the earthly kingdom is different from the heavenly kingdom:
Regarding the heavenly kingdom there are differences between punishments for rebellion against the kingdom,
but not so regarding the earthly kingdom
(as above at length).
And especially according to what is explained in Tanya, that "in absolute truth, even a light transgression, behold the transgressor transgresses the will of the Supreme One, blessed be He, and it is in the ultimate separation from His unity and Oneness, may He be blessed," "like actual idolatry"*,
that although this matter is already brought in Sefer Chassidim, that "for every transgression that comes to his hand, he should consider: if they had decreed forced apostasy upon him, he would have been killed for the sanctification of the Name...
all the more so this light one" — but the Alter Rebbe explains it in such a way that it is also understood by the animal soul,
until he thereby explains why this is a matter of "foolishness", etc.
One sees, therefore,
that although for every light transgression one becomes separated from His Oneness, may He be blessed, like actual idolatry,
a matter of rebellion,
nevertheless there are differences in punishments — consequently the question arises,
why is the earthly kingdom different from the heavenly kingdom?
And the explanation of this must be understood simply,
in a way that it should also be understood by the animal soul,
and one should be able to explain it even to the nations of the world,
and not only "be able to explain it",
rather it should indeed be accepted, and with joy and a good heart.
And to conclude with a good matter — the measure of good is greater:
In the reward of the commandments there are also differences,
even differences from one extreme to the other,
between light and severe ones,
and "according to the pain is the reward", etc.
That from the perspective of this matter, one must also have a very great reward in this generation,
"according to the pain",
according to the pain of the end of the time of exile,
in the footsteps of Mashiach,
and especially when one stands at the end of the night,
before the dawn,
when the darkness of the night is then with greater intensity and greater strength
(as explained in various places)
— that despite this, one stands firm in the trial of the matter!
And as is known, the explanation of the Alter Rebbe on the verse "And the man Moshe was very humble, more than any person upon the face of the earth",
that this refers specifically to the generation of the footsteps of Mashiach,
that despite the darkness of the world at this time,
one says "Modeh Ani, etc.",
which itself is already sufficient,
and especially when one is "full of commandments like a pomegranate",
and one does not have the deficiency of those about whom the Gemara says "full of commandments like a pomegranate",
rather also all the other matters of the pomegranate are all as they should be.
But in addition to all this,
which is a reward for each commandment according to its nature,
there is also a higher reward,
the reward for "accept My sovereignty,"
the concept of "the king's spread"
(as above),
the aspect of Sovev Kol Almin,
up to the level that is higher even than "the life of the World to Come,"
as the Rambam elaborates in the tenth chapter of the Laws of Repentance,
that the perfection of studying Torah for its own sake is,
at the time of study, it is not even in order to attain the life of the World to Come.
It is understood that this manner of service brings blessings from above in the manner of "His full, open, holy, and broad hand,"
and simply,
that already in the footsteps of the Messiah,
and certainly after the giving of the Torah,
the Almighty grants ample children, life, and sustenance,
and in all of them ample,
from His full, open, holy, and broad hand,
And very soon - they will have the primary blessing,
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah.
Therefore they will
(as usual)
conclude with the melody of the four stanzas of the old Rebbe,
and before that - the well-known melody
(preparation),
and then the melody of the middle Rebbe,
and then the melody of "initially go over,"
and then "may the Temple be built speedily in our days."
And may it indeed be "speedily in our days" the true and complete redemption,
"with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters,"
"a great congregation shall return here."
They sang a preparatory melody. The melody of the Alter Rebbe
(the fourth stanza - first time).
Nye zhuritsy khlaptsy. "Initially go over."
The cantor shall sing "May it be His will that the Temple be built speedily in our days."
Afterwards he commanded to announce about the Torah gathering.
He recited the Grace after Meals. The Evening Prayer. The Havdalah. And he distributed to each one from the cup of blessing.
Before his departure he began to sing "for with joy you shall go out."
