It is the Shabbat of blessing the month of Sivan, which

It is the Shabbat of blessing the month of Sivan, which
א. *
It is Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Sivan, which
(in the language of Scripture1)
"In the third month... on this day
(Rosh Chodesh Sivan,
according to the words of our Sages2)
they came to the Sinai desert...
and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain,"
and following this was the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah at the time of the Giving of our Torah,
on the festival of Shavuot.
Afterwards,
that on Rosh Chodesh Sivan the Almighty decided to give the Torah to the Jewish people,
as it is brought in the words of our Sages,3
that at the time when it was,
on Rosh Chodesh Sivan,
"and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain,"
"and he encamped" in the singular,
"they all became one encampment,"
the Almighty said, "Since... they love peace and became one encampment, now is the hour that I will give them My Torah."
But since it was also necessary that the recipients of the Torah
(the Jewish people)
be prepared for this,
therefore then
(on Rosh Chodesh Sivan)
the Giving of the Torah had not yet occurred
(this is the simple explanation of why the Giving of the Torah was not on Rosh Chodesh Sivan according to the aforementioned words of our Sages),
and several days of additional preparations for the Giving of the Torah were needed,
as explained in the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe4 the preparations on each and every day,
which each day accomplished
(each day did its work4),
and afterwards was the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah in actuality.
And since this Shabbat is Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Sivan –
in addition to that from this Shabbat all the days are blessed,5 including the time of the Giving of our Torah itself and Rosh Chodesh –
it is understood that on this Shabbat the preparations for the Giving of the Torah already begin.
And particularly in the determination of this year,
when one goes directly from this Shabbat Mevarchim into Rosh Chodesh Sivan.
One of the conditions that needed to be in place for the Giving of the Torah –
after all the other aforementioned preparations for the Giving of the Torah
(from Rosh Chodesh Sivan onward) –
is the matter of "guarantors,"
that the Jewish people needed to have guarantors that they would fulfill the Torah.
And as related in the Midrash,6
that before the Giving of the Torah the Almighty demanded from the Jewish people guarantors that the Jewish people would learn Torah and conduct themselves according to the instructions of the Torah
(for this is indeed the main point and purpose of Torah –
study is great because it leads to action,7
that one should not only learn Torah but that the learning should affect his daily life) –
the Jewish people proposed various guarantors,
but the Almighty did not accept them. Until the Jewish people said, "Our children will be our guarantors,"7
these He did accept as guarantors for the Torah,
because they are the guarantors that the Jewish people will learn Torah and conduct themselves according to its instructions.
What this simply means
("Our children will be our guarantors")
is the Jewish children,
boys and girls. Before Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah –
for a "guarantor" must be one who is not the debtor himself,
and since the Giving of the Torah was for all Jewish people,
men and women
(as above),
the guarantors could not be those past Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah,
because then they themselves are obligated,
but specifically the children before Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah who are not obligated in the commandments
(except from the aspect of education and the like),
they could be the guarantors.
And as mentioned,
the guarantors were all Jewish children,
both boys and girls –
just as the Giving of the Torah in general was for men and women,
and on the contrary –
first "Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob" –
"these are the women,"
and afterwards "and tell the children of Israel"8 –
"these are the men,"
(as explained in the Midrashim9 and brought in Rashi on the verse).
And because of their guarantee that the Jewish people would always learn Torah and conduct themselves according to the instructions of the Torah,
the Almighty gave the Jewish people the Torah until the end of all generations!
"And these days are remembered and done"10:
Every year,
when the time arrives,
the matters repeat themselves as they were the first time
(according to the explanation of the AriZal11).
And therefore there must then be "remembered" of what happened at this time the first time,
and not merely a remembrance,
but "and done,"
that one must relive it in actual deed,11
and in the language of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe,12
that one should not only hear it but internalize it!
And likewise in our matter:
When the time of the Giving of our Torah arrives each and every year
(beginning from the preparation for it from Rosh Chodesh Sivan and the Shabbat of blessing Rosh Chodesh Sivan),
there is a "remembering and doing" of the same matters that were at the time of the Giving of our Torah the first time.
That is, although the matter of the Giving of the Torah exists every single day,
as we say in the blessing of the Torah
(even one who does not know what he is saying) –
"Giver of the Torah" in the present tense13
(in addition to "He gave us His Torah" in the past tense) –
it is nevertheless understood that this is not comparable to how the Giving of the Torah is "once a year" at the time of the Giving of our Torah,
in that same time of the year when the Giving of the Torah was the first time,
for then the matter stands more revealed and emphasized
(than during the rest of the days of the year),
and on the contrary –
from the time of the Giving of our Torah it is thereafter drawn into all the days of the year.
And it is similar to that which is regarding the Exodus from Egypt, whose purpose is as stated "when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain"14],
that although we mention the Exodus from Egypt every day,
even twice every day,
by day and by night15
(i.e., both when it is light (day) in the mind one must mention the Exodus from Egypt,
and even when it is dark in the mind (to the extent that it is called by Torah law "night") there must also be mention of the Exodus from Egypt] –
nevertheless this is not comparable to the mention of the Exodus from Egypt that must be once a year,
at "the time of our freedom"16,
and on the contrary –
from then the matter of the Exodus from Egypt is drawn into all the days of the year17.
And likewise also regarding the Festival of Sukkot.
And from this it is also understood regarding the time of the Giving of our Torah on the Festival of Shavuot,
that although during all the days of the year there is the "Giver of the Torah" in the present tense,
it stands more revealed and emphasized at the time of the Giving of our Torah,
in that time of the year when the Torah was given the first time.
And from this it is also understood regarding the matter of "our children will be our guarantors" as a preparation for the Giving of the Torah –
that in these days,
before the time of the Giving of our Torah,
when there is a "remembering and doing" of that which was the first time –
there also repeats itself in this year the matter that Jewish children,
boys and girls, before Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah,
are the guarantors for the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah in this year.
And this further strengthens the matter that was instituted by the instruction of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe
(in a different style –
but with the same content) –
the matter of "the legions of Hashem",
of Jewish children,
boys and girls before Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah,
because they are the ones who are "guarantors" for the giving of the entire Torah to all Jews:
The name "legions of Hashem" stands in the Written Torah regarding all Jews at the time of their Exodus from the land of Egypt
("And it came to pass on that very day, all the legions of Hashem went out of the land of Egypt"18).
But in this very matter, the matter of "legions of Hashem" stands more emphasized regarding Jewish children –
because the purpose of the Exodus from Egypt
("when you bring the people out of Egypt")
was "you will serve God on this mountain",
the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah
("you will serve"),
and the Jewish children were the guarantors for this.
And as mentioned,
this matter exists throughout the entire year,
but in a revealed and specially emphasized way it stands in this once-a-year time of the Giving of our Torah,
beginning from the preparations for it,
starting from Rosh Chodesh Sivan
(when the Almighty decided to give the Torah to the Jews,
as above).
And in the time of exile it comes,
that this already begins from the Shabbat of Blessing of Rosh Chodesh Sivan
(which blesses and gives strength in all matters of Rosh Chodesh Sivan).
As discussed many times,
that at the time when they would sanctify based on sighting,
on the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh they could not know with certainty when Rosh Chodesh would be,
because it was dependent on the sighting of the witnesses,
and the acceptance of testimony in the court,
with all the details thereof as calculated in the book "Hilchot Hilchot" of the laws of Sanctification of the Month;
עם כל הפרטים בזה ווי אויסגערעכנט אין ספר "הלכות הלכות" פון הל' קידוש החודש;
even at the beginning of the time of exile,
they still continued to sanctify based on sighting19,
therefore at that time the matter of Shabbat of Blessing could not exist either;
במילא האט אויך דעמולט ניט געקענט זיין דער ענין פון שבת מברכים;
specifically in the darkness of exile,
when sanctification based on sighting was nullified,
and the sanctification of the months became only based on the calculation
(the calculation of Hillel),
even though this is indeed a calculation according to Torah in the manner of sanctification based on sighting,
however, at that time they could already know before Rosh Chodesh when Rosh Chodesh would be,
they then instituted the matter of Shabbat of Blessing20.
From this it is understood,
that already beginning from the Shabbat of Blessing of Rosh Chodesh Sivan
(from which is also blessed the time of the Giving of our Torah) –
stands with emphasis
(in the manner of "we are reminded and we do")
the matter of "our children will be our guarantors".
And simply this means,
that beginning from this Shabbat of Blessing in particular,
Jewish children,
boys and girls,
"the legions of Hashem",
must add even more strength in their "and we will do" in innocence and simplicity in which they are educated,
being guarantors for the entire Jewish people for the Giving of the Torah and the Receiving of the Torah,
And as is known in halacha21,
that a minor has no [valid] thought,
but he has action according to Torah
(and regarding this "the movement of his lips is considered an action"22),
and since his action is an entity that occupies space according to Torah,
and Torah is the master over the entire world,
the children become through this masters over the entire world,
including also over their education,
that they should receive a proper education,
as befits Jewish children who are guarantors for the entire Torah!
With all this comes additional emphasis and lesson from the weekly portion
(of the Shabbat of Blessing of Rosh Chodesh Sivan) –
Parshat Bamidbar,
from which one must also take a lesson and instruction,
all the more so from the known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov23 that from every thing one must take a lesson in the service of Hashem,
all the more so from a matter in Torah,
all the more so from the portion of Torah that was read
(and studied)
on this Shabbat in public with a blessing before and after,
and one who answers is like one who blesses*23:
In the portion it discusses the counting of the children of Israel,
"all who go out to the army in Israel" –
regarding the matter of "the legions of Hashem"!
And after this counting
(primarily)
the entire book is called by the name "Chumash HaPekudim"24,
so much so that even the reading of the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur "and in the tenth"
(as we also say it in the Mussaf prayer of Yom Kippur) –
is called in the Mishnah*24 "and in the tenth from Chumash HaPekudim",
even though the reading is not about the counting of the children of Israel,
not even the counting in Parshat Pinchas].
With this, however, there appears seemingly
(and not even "seemingly")
a contradiction to what was said above:
In our portion it states25 that "all who go out to the army in Israel" are "from twenty years old and upward",
"indicating that none go out to the army less than twenty" –
now how does this accord with what was said earlier that "the legions of Hashem" are also
(and moreover –
primarily)
children before Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah,
who are at the opposite extreme of "twenty years old and upward":
children before Bar Mitzvah are minors,
whereas "from twenty years old and upward" is not only an adult and obligated in commandments
(which is at the time one becomes thirteen years old),
but he has already reached the ultimate of adulthood,
that he can be "a seller of his father's property"26?
The explanation of this is27:
At that time it was required that there be an army in its simple sense that could simply wage a physical war against the enemies,
beginning from the wars
(after the Exodus from Egypt)
on the way in the desert,
and afterwards in the conquest of the land. And the conquest was indeed through blasts and shouts etc.,
but for this they simply needed an army that had the strength to wage war.
Therefore for this they needed specifically "from twenty years old and upward",
because one of *27 twenty years [is] for strength28. Therefore the counting of the children of Israel was "from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army in Israel, you shall count them according to their legions".
But now, when we speak,
when we stand before the future redemption,
which will not be like the Exodus from Egypt29 –
"not with haste shall you go out"30,
but "in stillness and in confidence shall be your salvation"*30,
there will be no need to come to wars,
and on the contrary –
the nations of the world will bring Jews as one brings a "gift in a pure vessel"31:
But on the other hand –
also the redemption is dependent on our deeds and our service32,
there must also be war,
but not a physical war,
rather a spiritual war
("our deeds" from the term coercion33,
like "they coerce for charity"34,
and "our service" from the term "processing of hides"35]) –
in such a war one does not specifically need a twenty-year-old for strength,
rather it begins from small children,
who have deed
(as above).
This is like it is stated in this week's portion regarding the tribe of Levi,
"the legion of the King"36,
that their count was "from one month old and upward"37,
that already then each of them becomes a "guardian38 of the charge of the holy":
"the legion of the King" is also a group of military men. As the simple explanation of "legion" is,
as it is also in the languages of the nations –
"legion" –
a group of military men;
א קבוצה פון אנשי צבא;
but together with this, even children "from one month old and upward" enter into this "legion of the King". Because this does not speak about an army that needs to wage a physical war,
rather a spiritual war,
"guardian of the charge of the holy",
which begins "from one month old and upward".
Regarding a physical war –
indeed, they do not take children. Young schoolchildren are not taken for any matter,
even for matters of holiness,
because "the world exists only for the sake of the breath of young schoolchildren",
"breath without sin"39,
and regarding them it is stated<sup>40</sup> "do not touch My anointed ones";
און בנוגע צו זיי שטייט 40 "אל תגעו במשיחי";
However, regarding a spiritual war
(which is "in stillness and in confidence"),
this begins "from one month old and upward",
and on the contrary:
Regarding a spiritual war,
and especially at the end of the time of exile,
when the main "work of the day" is to bring Mashiach our righteousness
(through spiritual war in our deeds and our service,
"in stillness and in confidence") –
specifically young schoolchildren,
who are called by the name "My anointed ones",
are the main part of "the hosts of Hashem" in such a war!
Therefore "the hosts of Hashem" now consists specifically of children before bar-mitzvah and bat-mitzvah. To which all children have a connection, even "from one month old and upward",
and immediately from birth,
but since they need to participate in this with their effort –
therefore it was established that "the hosts of Hashem" should be mainly of children who have already reached the age of education,
who already have some understanding,
at least in general,
of this matter.
This is also one of the reasons why "the hosts of Hashem" is connected with the matter of "We want Mashiach now":
Since the role and work of the day of the children of "the hosts of Hashem"
(who are called "My anointed ones")
is to bring Mashiach –
one must arouse in them the inner will and the essential will and the soul's will that they already want to have Mashiach,
and the inner and soul's will must come out in a revealed way so that it becomes "for your willingness"41,
also the will of the body and the animal soul,
until "with all your heart –
with both your inclinations"42.
And this
(the revelation of the will regarding Mashiach)
is done by saying,
that we want "Mashiach now".
But since there are Jewish children who do not yet understand the holy tongue,
(sing)
they say it not in the holy tongue,
rather in a translation in the language of the country
[and it is noteworthy that the Targum of Onkelos was given at Sinai<sup>43</sup>];
[ולהעיר אז תרגום אונקלוס איז געגעבן געווארן בסיני 43];
and even the children who understand the holy tongue,
it is because they need to arouse and effect this upon other children who do not understand it,
even upon a "scattered sheep"*43 –
therefore they say
(sing)
it also in the language of the country:
"We want Mashiach now".
And they do not say it simply in speech,
rather they sing it with a melody of joy,
which penetrates the person more and brings out the will more in a revealed way.
And therefore it is also fitting that it be connected with saying L'chaim over a cup of wine,
which "gladdens God and men"44 –
because this is also connected with Mashiach,
As discussed, the connection of wine to David, King Moshiach,
and not just any cup of wine,
but a "kosiy revayah,"
in the words of our Sages, "the cup of David in the World to Come holds two hundred and twenty-one logs,
as it is said, 'my cup is revayah,'
revayah in gematria is that number,"
and "kosiy revayah" is simply beyond measure and limitation,
especially since it holds two hundred and twenty-one logs,
the letters of "orech,"
the aspect of Arich Anpin,
which is drawn down
(to the children)
into the aspect of Zeir Anpin.
And continuing from this:
Standing on Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Sivan,
when the matter is emphasized that Jewish children,
"the legions of Hashem,"
are the guarantors for the giving of the Torah and the acceptance of the Torah,
and in order to call forth from them more strengthening in their service,
and especially –
the service of the day –
of bringing Moshiach Tzidkeinu,
including by calling forth and revealing their inner will
(and the inner will of every Jew)
that "We want Moshiach now" –
they should now sing a melody of joy,
and how good –
the melody of "We want Moshiach now,"
and with great joy. And they should also say "L'chaim" over a cup of wine,
in the manner of "kosiy revayah" of David, King Moshiach,
and this
("revayah,"
the aspect of Arich Anpin)
is drawn down to each one according to his worth,
as is known the statement of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that one comes with a kadke
and another comes with a keleshik
(in the language of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe),
and each one is poured according to his vessels.
And in their merit –
their parents and teachers and guides should also say "L'chaim,"
and in their merit –
all those gathered here should say "L'chaim."
And may it be His will that the joy,
which breaks through barriers,
and especially from "breath that has no sin" –
should further hasten the "delay of exile,"
and immediately the redemption will come,
"and behold, with the clouds of heaven,"
speedily in our days, literally, and in our time, literally.
[The children present, may they live, said "L'chaim" and sang "We want Moshiach now."]
It was mentioned earlier that minors do not have thought but they have action.
And since the children
(who are called "Moshiach's")
now have the special role of bringing Moshiach Tzidkeinu –
they must surely add in their service a matter of actual deed that will further hasten the redemption.
Among the matters of actual deed that bring the redemption closer –
and are also primary matters in the Torah,
and are also relevant to children –
is the matter of the act of charity,
for "great is charity, for it brings the redemption closer,"
and this is a primary matter in the Torah and the commandments –
"it is equivalent to all the commandments";
"שקולה כנגד כל המצוות" 52;
and the matter of love of Israel,
"and you shall love your fellow as yourself,"
which nullifies the cause of the exile
(the opposite of baseless hatred),
consequently it brings the redemption
(for when the cause is nullified, the effect is automatically nullified),
and this is also a primary matter in the Torah and the commandments –
"a great principle in the Torah."
In addition, in this there is also an empowerment from the present time which especially emphasizes the matter of love of Israel –
Shabbat Mevarchim and Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan,
when it was "and Israel encamped there opposite the mountain,"
"they all became one encampment"
(as above, section 1),
"as one person with one heart." And especially since this is also after Lag BaOmer,
when the students of Rabbi Akiva began to practice showing respect to one another,
and more.
And in addition to this, there is also a special power from this place –
a synagogue and a study hall
(a place of prayer and a place of Torah)
together,
and especially a synagogue and study hall of the four cubits of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the leader of our generation,
who proclaimed "immediately to repentance, immediately to redemption" –
this gives even more power to perform actions that will further bring the redemption closer,
and in a manner of "in stillness –
and you will be given –
which is connected to "repentance" –
and in quietness you shall be saved."
This is also connected to the time –
the day of Shabbat –
when all matters are in a manner of "in stillness and quietness"
(and also the word "Shabbat" is similar to "stillness" *58),
for "all your work is done,"
"and you shall call Shabbat a delight."
What actual deed can the children do regarding charity and love of Israel
(which brings the redemption closer)
on the day of Shabbat,
when one may not do any work?
One has the advice,
that it should be "they exchange their meals":
each boy should give another boy a cup of wine to say "L'Chaim" upon it,
and the friend should give him back a cup for L'Chaim;
און דער חבר זאל אים צוריקגעבן א כוס לחיים;
so too with the girls:
each girl should give a piece of pastry to her friend,
and her friend should give her back a piece of pastry.
That through this one fulfills in actual deed and in completeness,
in this time and place,
the matter of charity and love of Israel,
which bring the redemption closer.
Therefore it is a proper thing,
that the children should now do so
(with the help of their guides and teachers or their attendants) –
each one should exchange with his friend a cup of wine,
and the girls –
pastry.
And one should do this with alacrity,
in order to avoid burdening the community. Although "not in haste shall you go,"
but "in quiet and ease,"
this is regarding haste,
but alacrity must be present.
The Almighty will surely pay reward measure for measure,
and bring the redemption in a manner of alacrity,
"and behold, with the clouds of heaven."
And it is a certain thing,
that since it concerns children who are called by the name "Moshiach's" –
through their increase of activity in the matter of charity and love of Israel,
the Almighty says that "there is reward for your work,"
"and the children shall return to their border":
in the merit of the children –
and in the merit of righteous women –
there will be "and the children shall return to their border,"
the children will return to their border,
which is the true border,
the only boundary,
of Jews is –
the Holy Land,
there will be "and the children shall return to their border."
Speedily in our actual days,
quickly in our actual times.
[The children (may they live) exchanged with each other a cup of wine (and the Rebbe Shlita instructed each one to do so).
And the Rebbe Shlita gave the pastry for the girls (with the help of women),
to exchange among themselves].
It is customary that every time one does something for the sake of fear of Heaven,
there are those who immediately grab onto questions from the opposing side!
So too in our case –
one immediately grabs onto a question,
and since he considers himself a "learned person,"
he asks a "learned question":
Where is the matter of "and you shall love your fellow as yourself" –
when the child knows from the outset that he immediately receives back a cup of wine
(or pastry)
from the other child?
The question comes simply from ignorance! And not only in the part of Aggadah or the part of reasoning in the Torah,
or even from the part of Halachah in the Gemara,
but from a "precedent" in the Gemara,
that "one does not derive...
neither from a teaching nor from a deed unless they said to him 'Halachah for practice,'"
and this precedent indeed becomes a Halachah in the Shulchan Aruch:
The Gemara relates a precedent:
"Abaye bar Avin and Rabbi Chanina bar Avin exchanged their meals with each other,"
in order to fulfill the mitzvah of sending portions each man to his fellow and the Purim meal!
This is a precedent of Amoraim,
that if one does not know of it,
it is from the outset not a mistake,
as is known that in the time after the Amoraim the rule of "one who errs in a Mishnaic matter returns" applies also to statements of the Amoraim
(in the Gemara),
who come in place of the Tannaim,
as explained also in the Urim.
And especially such great Amoraim who are students of Rabbah,
whose greatness is recounted at the end of tractate Horayos.
And this precedent was not for them a one-time conduct,
but they conducted themselves thus for many years,
at least several times.
And from this it later becomes an actual Halachah in the Shulchan Aruch,
that if one has nothing to send for Mishloach Manot,
"he exchanges with his friend: this one sends his meal to that one and that one sends his meal to this one in order to fulfill 'and sending portions each man to his fellow.'"
One has from this an explicit source for the aforementioned conduct of exchanging with one's friend a cup of wine.
And although the aforementioned deed was on Purim,
it is understood that so it is also in other situations and circumstances of a similar nature.
And especially in our case there is an additional matter,
that it concerns minors,
with whom the main thing is not thought and intention etc.,
but actual deed. Consequently, it is not so relevant what they think about receiving back a cup from the friend,
but the actual deed of love of Israel,
that he gives him a cup of wine,
as is understood and simple.
May it be His will that from this matter of education in the service in this time –
as explained in the Ramban and elucidated in Chassidus,
the service in this time is in the manner of education
("Set up for yourself markers")
for the service in the future to come when it will be "according to the commandment of Your will" –
similar to the education of children for the time when they will grow up –
may we very soon actually come to the time when it will be "according to the commandment of Your will,"
and in a manner of "leaping" and "skipping,"
and moreover –
"with the clouds of heaven,"
and speedily in our days, literally.
Beginning from that which it will be "the Holy Temple will be built speedily in our days,"
until that we will not need to come to the building of the Holy Temple,
because the Holy Temple is "built and perfected" and stands ready above in the Jerusalem above,
one only needs to connect the Jerusalem above with the Jerusalem below,
therefore this can be "speedily in our days," literally,
in an instant, like a blink,
and one sings the words "that the Holy Temple will be built speedily in our days" in a melody of joy,
with the addition of "and grant our portion in Your Torah,"
specifically "in Your Torah" –
"may your springs spread forth outward,"
the study of the inner dimension of the Torah,
which speaks about knowledge of G-d
("Your Torah"),
as it is written "know the G-d of your father,"
through which it becomes "and serve Him with a whole heart."
And the main point is –
that it should be speedily in our days, literally.
[They sang the melody "that the Holy Temple will be built speedily in our days and grant our portion in Your Torah"].
It was discussed in the farbrengen of the previous Shabbat,
that on this Shabbat,
Parshat Bamidbar,
Rosh Chodesh and Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan,
at the time of "the desire of desires" when one could
("one who is compelled, etc.")
pray the evening prayer together with "Yaaleh VeYavo,"
one should make farbrengens connected with love of Israel and unity of Israel and the redemption.
And as was discussed then briefly and with a hint, several details that connect the time with love of Israel and unity of Israel.
It is, however, understood and simple,
that when the Shabbat itself arrives,
when one fulfills the matter in actual deed –
the power of action is great,
that then it must be renewed and added in an even broader manner the emphasis on love of Israel and unity of Israel,
until in a manner of "one who has one hundred wants two hundred,"
"one who has two hundred wants four hundred, etc.,"
"double for wisdom"
(relative to the emphasis on this until now),
which is not merely twice as much,
but more than that,
and especially in quality. And as was discussed multiple times the parable for this from the Gemara,
that two people who lift a burden can lift more than twice as much as each one of them can lift alone,
and as is also explained the content of this in the discourses of Chassidus.
The emphasis on the matter of love of Israel and unity of Israel
(until in a manner of "double for wisdom") –
is found both from the aspect of the year,
both from the aspect of the month,
and from the aspect of the day of the week.
From the aspect of the year:
The current year is a leap year. Its essence is to unify a "small" with a "great,"
the "small luminary" with the "great luminary,"
which in themselves are "great" and "small"
(in the language of the verse in the Torah of Truth),
and they have two separate courses,
and the solar year is longer by eleven days relative to the lunar year,
a leap year comes and adds a month of intercalation,
which equalizes the difference between the course of the great luminary and the course of the small luminary.
And the equalization and unity is in a manner of "double for wisdom":
one does not add only eleven days each year,
but one adds an entire month of intercalation,
which is more than double the eleven days
(twenty-two days).
Until that several leap years in the cycle do not only complete the missing days of the years before this,
but also in the years after this.
That is, that when one enters into the year after this,
one already has the equalization and unity of the "small luminary" with the "great luminary."
And in the service of man –
this is the matter of love of Israel until unity of Israel
(and in a manner of "double for wisdom,"
which is more than twice as much):
According to Torah there are differences between Jews,
there is the reality of a great one in Israel and a reality of a small one in Israel,
and so forth.
And according to intellect there could be a reasoning that the small one and great one must always remain separate and not become unified,
because this one is a great one according to the Torah of Truth and this one is a small one according to the Torah of Truth.
Until even in holiness there is a place that on both of them the difference between them should be felt –
From the aspect of the concept of "the jealousy of scribes increases wisdom,"
jealousy in holiness
[with which the Tzemach Tzedek explains (at length relatively) in Ohr HaTorah the concept of "and Rachel was jealous of her sister,
for seemingly how does the concept of jealousy fit with the matriarchs, heaven forbid,
rather this is the concept of "the jealousy of scribes increases wisdom,"
jealousy in holiness],
the smaller one must hear that there is a greater one than him,
consequently he has the "jealousy of scribes increases wisdom."
Therefore, there could have been a rationale that the difference between a smaller one and a greater one must always be heard.
As this is regarding a teacher and student –
who are analogous to the sun and the moon –
that they must be found in two separate worlds,
two separate modes in the course of the intellect,
this one is a teacher and that one is a student,
and so it must be,
because if not,
one will not have the concept of influence from teacher to student.
One could have thought that this is the ultimate perfection.
Upon this comes the lesson of a leap year which equalizes and unifies the course of the sun and the course of the moon
(even though one is "the great luminary" and one is "the small luminary") –
that together with this that there is the difference between great and small,
the ultimate perfection is specifically in this when one unites them together,
not through this that one nullifies the other,
for then it is not unity,
rather through this that the small one remains in his existence and the great one remains in his existence,
and nevertheless they stand in equal standing and complete unity. Like the function of a leap year,
that it does not nullify the "great luminary" or the "small luminary,"
rather it equalizes and unifies them as they stand in their existence.
And as this is regarding a teacher and student:
Even though this one is a teacher and that one is a student,
and they are found in two separate worlds,
until –
incomparable to each other,
a distance of value that is more than "double the wisdom" –
nevertheless the perfection of influence from a teacher and student consists of the teacher making it so that the intellect of the student becomes like the intellect of the teacher,
meaning not nullification of the intellect of the student,
rather the intellect of the student itself becomes like the intellect of the teacher,
until therefore he does not need to say "a matter in the name of its speaker,"
because the intellect of the teacher has become internalized in him until it has become his intellect and his Torah.
Therefore one finds teachings of Rabbi Eliezer the Great not in the name of their speaker even though "he never said a matter that he did not hear from his teacher,"
because the intellect of the teacher became internalized in him and became his intellect and his Torah,
as explained elsewhere *98.
Meaning that the teacher and the student
(notwithstanding the distance of value between them)
become unified,
and in a unity that is more than "double the wisdom,"
because the distance between them was incomparable
(more than "double the wisdom").
Until the unity is in a manner,
that sometimes the advantage of the student over the advantage of the teacher is even heard –
because "I have learned much from my teachers and from my friends more than from my teachers,
and from my students more than from all of them."
So too there is an emphasis
(in this year)
on the concept of unity from the aspect of the month:
In the determination of this year one enters directly from the Shabbat of blessing the New Moon into the New Moon
(Sivan),
without any interruption between them,
even not "like an honor,"
which is less than three,
rather without any interruption at all,
immediately after the last moment of Shabbat the moment of the New Moon begins.
Which proves the ultimate unification –
without any interruption at all between the blessing of the New Moon on Shabbat and the one being blessed
(the New Moon).
(ר"ח).
So too there is an emphasis
(in this year)
on the concept of unity from the aspect of the week:
The determination of the New Moon of Sivan in this year is –
on the first day of the week. Which in the language of the Torah the day is called
(in the six days of creation)
not first day rather "one day." As it is taught simply also with a five-year-old for Scripture,
one does not translate that it is the first day,
rather that it is one day. Which emphasizes the concept of unity.
And specifically according to the words of the Midrash brought in Rashi on the Torah,
that "one day" indicates the unity of G-d:
"Why is 'one' written?
Because the Holy One, blessed be He, was alone in His world, as the angels were not created until the second day
(or the fifth day),"
as the matter is explained in Chassidus.
That the unity of G-d is the simple unity,
and a simple unity that is drawn down below into the world,
until "one nation in the land,"
"that even in matters of the land they will not separate from the one true G-d, heaven forbid."
And the simple unity of the Holy One, blessed be He, is also the source for the unity among Jews –
"one nation" –
that among them there should be not only love of Israel but also unity of Israel,
a complete unity and a simple unity,
literally one thing,
until one cannot recognize the differences between them.
From all these matters
(that we have just spoken about,
in addition to what we spoke about last Shabbos)
where the matter of love and unity of Israel is emphasized –
by virtue of the year,
the month and the week –
there is even more emphasis and strength regarding the matter of love of Israel until unity of Israel,
That regardless of the various differences
(according to Torah)
among Jews,
even the general division into ten types
(as explained in Likkutei Torah, beginning of Parshas Nitzavim),
from "your heads, your tribes" to "your wood cutters" and "your water drawers" –
"You are standing today, all of you, before the L-rd your G-d,"
"as one man with one heart,"
because this is "before the L-rd your G-d,"
the simple unity,
causes that all ten types become literally one thing,
And to such an extent,
that through the power of the Torah,
which is the master of the world,
a Jew becomes a master
(so to speak)
over the differences
(according to Torah)
among Jews,
until it can be that one who is of a lower type is higher than one of a higher type!
And this is not a simplistic interpretation, so to speak –
because it is stated explicitly in the Mishnah:
The Mishnah says that a man who studies Torah
(a Torah scholar),
even if he is a Levite or an Israelite,
even one who is on the lowest level of lineage –
is higher than a High Priest who does not study Torah,
as it is said, "It is more precious than pearls,
than a High Priest who enters the Holy of Holies" *109!
And in addition to the emphasis on the matter of unity in the matters discussed above
(in addition to what was spoken about at the farbrengen before this) –
one also finds it in the Torah studies of the day:
In Rashi on the weekly portion –
as is known the words of the Shelah that in Rashi there are "wondrous matters,"
and also known is the teaching of our Rabbis, the Nesi'im, about this;
וידוע אויך תורת רבותינו נשיאינו עד"ז 111;
In the notes of my father on the Zohar of our portion. And although this is a brief note,
it is nevertheless a small amount that contains a large amount;
איז דאס אבער מועט המחזיק את המרובה;
In the daily study of the Rambam's book,
which was recently renewed and accepted throughout the Jewish diaspora –
And as will be explained below.
And may it be His will that through this that Jews increase in love and unity of Israel,
which will nullify the cause of the exile
(baseless hatred),
this will automatically nullify the effect –
the exile,
so that the redemption comes immediately without any interval of time
(because when the cause is nullified, the effect is automatically nullified),
in the blink of an eye,
even faster than "in the twinkling of an eye,"
And in general it means –
speedily in our days, literally,
and speedily in our days, literally literally.
A discourse (in the form of a talk)
beginning with the words "And Yehonasan said to him, 'Tomorrow is the new moon...'"
It is also customary for some time to study a verse from the weekly portion together with Rashi's commentary;
ס'איז אויך נהוג משך כמה זמן צו אפלערנען א פסוק פון פרשת השבוע צוזאמען מיט פירוש רש"י;
A matter in the notes of my father on the Zohar of our portion;
אן ענין אין די הערות פון טאטן אויפן זהר דפרשתנו;
On the Shabbosos when we study Pirkei Avos –
A matter in the chapter corresponding to that Shabbos;
אן ענין אין דעם פרק המתאים לשבת זה;
And recently –
A matter in the daily study of the Rambam's book.
And as mentioned above,
since the farbrengen in particular is connected with love and unity of Israel –
one will endeavor to find in all these studies a lesson regarding the matter of love of Israel until unity of Israel.
And it is worthwhile that there should be "Give to the wise and he will become wiser":
Each one should find in his Torah studies of the day,
"according to the law given to each and every one in the laws of Talmud Torah,"
studies that he learns for a long time or a short time and the like –
a connection with the matter of love of Israel and unity of Israel. For since everything is with Divine Providence,
all the Torah studies of the day certainly have a connection with the matter of love and unity of Israel!
To every head of the weekly Torah portion –
Parshat Bamidbar –
there is a connection to love of Israel and unity of Israel:
The name of the portion is "Bamidbar"
(not "Bamidbar Sinai",
but "Bamidbar" simply).
So much so that this is actually the name of the entire book. The Gemara calls this book by the name "Pekudim"
(as above section 6),
but in several places,
as well as in the "Yehi Ratzon" after Tehillim
(which was recited this morning),
the book is called by the name "Bamidbar".
One sees in Halachah the connection of "Bamidbar" with love and unity of Israel:
The law is that a desert is a place of danger. And in the language of the verse *114 –
"No man shall sit there",
"fiery serpent and scorpion and thirst where there is no water". And therefore,
one may not go into the desert alone,
rather he must go with a caravan,
where then one protects the other.
And so great is the necessity of this matter,
that traveling in a caravan overrides Shabbat,
as the ruling in the Shulchan Aruch that "those who go out in a caravan in the desert... (and)
if afterwards when they are in the desert they do not wish to rest, they may go with them etc.".
That is, if his only option to go with a caravan in the desert is to go on Shabbat –
the Shulchan Aruch tells him,
that in this case he must conduct himself contrary to the Shulchan Aruch on every Shabbat regarding the observance of Shabbat,
because going alone in the desert is a matter of danger to life.
One sees from this that the concept of "Bamidbar",
including also the "desert of the nations" *116 of the exile –
necessitates the concept of love and unity of Israel,
that one should go together in a "caravan" in order to protect one another from the danger,
which proves that the people who go in a caravan stand in unity,
to such an extent that one protects the other,
because if they do not stand in unity, one will not protect the other.
That is, it is not the interpretation that a caravan protects from a danger,
because at the time of a snake,
a wild animal or bandits attack someone,
he will show the snake that here is another person,
consequently the snake will go to the other and leave him...
Rather the interpretation is exactly the opposite:
When people are in a caravan, one protects the other and all together do not allow a dangerous thing
(a snake and the like).
That is, when one sees a snake and the like attacking another,
he endeavors to save that person.
And as discussed in the explanation of Rashi on the verse "You shall not stand upon the blood of your fellow",
"to see his death while you are able to save him,
such as one drowning in a river and a wild animal or bandits coming upon him" –
that even in a case where there is a concern that it should be "you shall stand",
you should remain standing in place,
because it is also a danger for you yourself –
even in such a case "you shall not stand upon the blood of your fellow"!
In Parshat Bamidbar and the Book of Bamidbar itself –
the head and beginning of the portion and the book
[which includes within itself the entire portion and the entire book,
just as a head includes within itself all the limbs of the body and leads them even as they are in their place]
begins with the verse "And Hashem spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai in the Tent of Meeting on the first day of the second month in the second year of their exodus from the land of Egypt saying",
and afterwards He says in the following verse the command regarding the census of the children of Israel:
"Lift up the head of the entire congregation of the children of Israel according to their families etc.".
That also in this
(the head of the portion and the book)
the concept of love of Israel and unity of Israel is emphasized,
as will be explained below section 31.
They focused
(in the collections)
on the first Rashi in the portion,
on the first verse in the portion:
Rashi quotes from the verse the words "And He spoke. In the desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month",
and explains:
"Because of His affection for them, He counts them every time,
when they left Egypt He counted them and when they fell in the sin of the calf He counted them to know the number of the survivors,
when He came to cause His Shechinah to rest upon them He counted them,
on the first of Nissan the Mishkan was erected and on the first of Iyar He counted them".
They asked the question:
There is a rule regarding Rashi that he does not give an explanation until one comes to the place where an explanation is required. So the question arises:
The command regarding the census of the children of Israel appears only in the following verse,
Rashi should have placed himself there –
why does he place himself on the first verse where the matter of the census of the children of Israel is not yet mentioned at all?!
The "system"
(of the booklet)
was aroused by this,
that it is wondrous why that one did not look into the commentators of Rashi who address the question and explain it.
The writer, however, warned about this –
whether willingly or unwillingly –
with that which he brings afterwards that the same question is also on Rashi at the beginning of Parshat Behar:
There Rashi also addresses the first verse in the portion
("And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying"),
on "on Mount Sinai,"
and explains:
"What does the matter of Shemittah have to do with Mount Sinai? Are not all the commandments stated from Sinai?
Rather, just as Shemittah, its general principles, its specific details, and its fine points were stated from Sinai, so too all of them, their general principles and their fine points were stated from Sinai,
so it is taught in the Torat Kohanim."
The same question arises:
The command regarding the mitzvah of Shemittah appears only later in the verse,
Rashi should have stated his explanation there –
why does he say it on the first verse before one even knows that it is speaking about Shemittah?!
One cannot answer,
as has been explained many times,
that Rashi addresses in every place the first words of a verse or a portion
(and does not even write "etc."),
even though his explanation is not only on the words on which he focuses but on the entire verse or portion;
כאטש זיין פירוש איז ניט בלויז אויף די ווערטער אויף וועלכע ער שטעלט זיך נאר אויפן גאנצן פסוק צי פרשה;
for example –
in Parshat Tetzaveh, Rashi addresses "And they shall make the ephod"
(without an "etc."),
and explains the entirety of the continuation of the portion,
because Rashi addresses the beginning of the subject and his intention is to the entire continuation of the subject –
But in this case, one cannot answer thus,
because when Rashi explains an entire subject,
and he quotes from the Chumash only the beginning of that subject,
it is the way of Rashi to quote only the very first words,
and no more,
as in "And they shall make the ephod,"
he quotes only the very first words without any other details;
איז ער מעתיק נאר די ערשטע ווערטער ממש אָן קיין אנדערע פרטים;
however, at the beginning of Parshat Bamidbar, Rashi quotes from the verse not only the first word "And He spoke,"
but also details –
"in the wilderness of Sinai, on the first of the second month" –
one cannot say that his intention is to the continuation of the subject in the later verses.
Furthermore, in the case of the making of the ephod, Rashi quotes the words "And they shall make the ephod," which refers to the actual command regarding the ephod,
which includes in itself all the details about the ephod
(that appear in the later verses),
consequently, it is more fitting that there he should explain all the details that are included in the command
("And they shall make the ephod");
("ועשו את האפוד");
however, at the beginning of our portion
(and likewise at the beginning of Parshat Behar)
Rashi does not quote the beginning of the command regarding the counting of the children of Israel,
but rather the introduction to it –
"And He spoke. In the wilderness of Sinai, on the first of the second month."
Consequently, the question remains at the beginning of our portion
(and at the beginning of Parshat Behar)
why does Rashi address the first verse before one comes to the actual subject of the counting of the children of Israel.
And the explanation of this must be understood simply for a child of five years of age studying Scripture,
without looking into the commentators of Rashi,
and especially since among the commentators of Rashi there are various explanations on this,
this itself proves that the explanation of this
(according to the commentators)
is not so simple and smooth.
One of the explanations among the commentators is:
Rashi is troubled why the verse needs to state the time of the command
("on the first of the second month, etc.") –
which is not found in most of the commands, that one should write alongside it when the command was said?
Rashi answers
(immediately in this first verse where it says "on the first of the second month"),
that the time of the command "on the first of the second month" brings out the greatness of the affection for the Jews,
even though they had just been counted after the Exodus from Egypt and after the sin of the Golden Calf,
so why must they be counted again immediately "on the first of the second month"?
Rather, this is because of their belovedness before Him,
"Because of His affection for them, He counts them at every moment." "And now it is well that it wrote 'on the first of the month in the second year' to inform you that this count was immediately and they were counted three times in one year, and this is what it says, 'Because of His affection for them, He counts them at every moment,'
for when they left Egypt on the fifteenth of Nisan, He counted them, and when they fell with the Golden Calf on the seventeenth of Tammuz, He counted them,
on the first of Iyar
(in the second year]
He returned and counted them,
and this is the affection,
and if it had not written here in which year and in which month it was, we would not know that it was all in one year." *127.
One cannot, however, answer in this manner according to the simple explanation,
because in the simple meaning of the verses it is not explicitly stated
(as it is stated in our portion)
that at the time of the Exodus from Egypt they counted the Jews,
there it only mentions their number
("about six hundred thousand men on foot" *128),
but that they were actually counted then, Rashi writes only in our portion,
And based on this, it is not reasonable to say that the proof of Rashi here
(that "because of His affection for them, He counts them every moment")
is from the chronological proximity of this census
("on the first of the second month")
to the census at the time of the Exodus from Egypt
(and after the sin of the Golden Calf) –
because according to this, it should have been explicitly stated there that they were counted,
in order to bring out His affection for them. And then Rashi would have had to explain there,
that one emphasizes the time and the proximity of the censuses,
in order to bring out the affection for Israel.
Since it is not stated there,
and it is stated only in our portion,
it is understood that the census because of the affection for Israel is only innovated in our portion,
not because of its proximity to the preceding censuses,
but because of the census itself,
And as will be explained further.
In the notes of my father on the Zohar of our portion, he comments 129 on what is stated in the Zohar * "He entered the synagogue, wrapped in tallit, covered with a tallit covering,"
first tefillin then tallit,
and writes in the note briefly:
"See what is noted with the help of Heaven above in the portion of Kedoshim page 1 column 1."
From which it is understood that the explanation that he writes there is also an explanation on this Zohar in this portion.
And one must connect this also with the matter of love of Israel unto the unity of Israel,
And as will be explained further.
Similarly, today's chapter in Pirkei Avot
(Chapter Six),
and today's lesson in Rambam –
one must connect with the matter of love of Israel and unity of Israel –
And as will be explained further.
Since we are speaking about the matter of farbrengens and love and unity of Israel –
therefore, now we will also distribute beverage for the gatherings and farbrengens that will take place in the coming days,
which are connected with love and unity of Israel etc.
Let them now,
as usual,
come and take the beverage,
and themselves say "L'chaim,"
and then distribute a portion of it to those assembled here,
and the rest at the gatherings. And as usual,
let them also invite all those assembled here,
that they should participate in the gatherings. So that then,
even if they will not be able to participate due to physical reasons,
it will be in the place where a person's thought is, there he is found
(as is known the proof for this from the laws of Eruvin).
And may it be His will that the addition in love of Israel and unity of Israel should further reveal the unity of Hashem down here,
"Hashem is One and His Name is One,"
until the perfection of this –
speedily in our days,
"and the glory of Hashem shall be revealed and all flesh shall see together,"
"Hashem is One and His Name is One,"
as I am written, so I am called,
And speedily in our days, literally.
[His Holy Honor the Rebbe Shlita gave a jug of beverage to:

The explanation in Rashi:
Immediately when the child of five learns the
(first)
verse "And Hashem spoke in the Sinai desert etc." a question arises for him –
why are the words "in the Sinai desert" stated here:
Since the command was "on the first of the second month in the second year of their exodus from Egypt" –
it is a simple matter that this was "in the Sinai desert",
because after "in the third month of the exodus of the children of Israel from Egypt" when "they came to the Sinai desert",
and after the giving of the Torah and the establishment of the Tabernacle
(on the first of Nissan,
one month before the command "on the first of the second month")
in the Sinai desert,
the Jews were in the Sinai desert for the duration of the forty years,
and there is no doubt that they left from there,
therefore one indeed sees that in most of the Torah's commands
(which were said in the Sinai desert)
it does not state that this was "in the Sinai desert",
because it is superfluous to say it –
so why does the verse here emphasize it?!
Rashi comes to answer the question with his commentary –
therefore he explains it specifically on
(the verse where it says)
"in the Sinai desert"
(and therefore he quotes in his commentary the words of the verse),
and not on the verse of Shelach –
"Because of His affection for them, He counts them every hour, etc.":
Rashi explains that here it is about a matter of "affection for them" of Israel. Then Rashi adds another thing,
that the affection is to such an extent that it expresses itself in "He counts them every hour, etc."
And according to this that here it is about a matter of affection for them of Israel –
it is explained why here it says "in the Sinai desert":
A) The five-year-old previously learned in Rashi,
that "the conversation of the servants of the patriarchs is more beloved before the Omnipresent than the Torah of the children, for the portion of Eliezer is repeated in the Torah
["two and three pages"]
and many fundamentals of the Torah were given only by allusion."
He understands from this,
that when there is a beloved matter one can repeat the same subject multiple times,
even if it seemingly adds nothing.
Consequently it is understood,
that there is no question why here it says with emphasis "in the Sinai desert"
(even though what is the point of this teaching),
because it is about a command that is connected with affection for them of Israel –
"because of His affection for them"
(and to such an extent that "He counts them every hour"),
and when it is about a beloved matter,
one repeats details that are seemingly superfluous,
because of the belovedness of the matter.
B) And the main point:
the content of the words "in the Sinai desert" themselves brings out
(and strengthens)
the reason for affection for them of Israel before the Holy One, blessed be He:
How do the Jews come at all to the "Sinai desert",
a desolate desert where there is no human settlement
("no man dwelt there")?
It is only because the Almighty led them there,
"at the word of the Lord they encamped and at the word of the Lord they journeyed",
and they obey the Almighty and do not flee to an inhabited place,
And as is understood from the plain meaning of the verses
(for the five-year-old studying Scripture)
that around this desert there were lands and human settlements
(as is also understood from the fact that Amalek and other nations waged war with the Jews in the desert,
from which it is understood that they were not far from the Jews in the desert),
and especially as one will learn further in the portion of Masei;
ובפרט ווי מ'וועט לערנען ווייטער בפ' מסעי;
consequently the Jews had a choice to flee from the desert to the lands and settlements around the desert,
instead of remaining in a desolate desert, etc.
Nevertheless the Jews did not do this. Why? Because they obeyed the Almighty.
Consequently it turns out,
that the very content of "in the Sinai desert" brings out affection for them of Israel,
that they obeyed the Almighty to such an extent that because of this they remained staying in a desert!
This further strengthens the reason for affection for them of Israel before the Holy One, blessed be He –
because of the fact that they obey Him and remain "in the Sinai desert".
And based on this it is understood why here it says "in the Sinai desert" –
because this strengthens the matter about which it is speaking here –
affection for them of Israel
(and to such an extent is the affection that "He counts them every hour").
And with this one will also understand why the verse also states the time –
"on the first of the second month in the second year",
and as Rashi quotes it in his commentary,
"And He spoke. In the Sinai desert on the first of the second month" –
because specifically the time brings out the affection of the Jews that they obey the Almighty and remain staying in the Sinai desert:
Granted, when it speaks of the first month after their departure from Egypt,
one can say that this is not necessarily because of the love of Israel who obey the Most High,
but because they want to flee from "hard labor" in Egypt,
they run wherever they can,
even into a desert;
אפילו אין א מדבר;
But after one sees that Jews are found "in the Sinai desert"
(and they did not flee to an inhabited place)
also "on the first of the second month,"
and furthermore:
"in the second year after their departure from Egypt" –
but it is enough [to say] "on the first of the second month"
(therefore Rashi cites this) –
it is understood that the only reason for this is because they obey the Most High and go wherever He leads them!
Regarding this, the explanation at the beginning of Parshat Behar is also understandable:
Immediately in the first verse "And God spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying" –
a question arises:
Why do the words "on Mount Sinai" appear here
(similar to the aforementioned question at the beginning of our portion, why do the words "in the Sinai desert" appear)?
And in the language of Rashi
(specifically in this verse where the question is raised):
"What does the matter of the Sabbatical year have to do with Mount Sinai? Were not all the commandments stated from Sinai?"
And Rashi answers:
"Rather, just as the Sabbatical year, its general principles, its specific details, and its fine points were stated from Sinai, so too all of them, their general principles and their fine points were stated from Sinai." That is,
that "on Mount Sinai" comes to teach a general lesson,
that not only the commandment of the Sabbatical year "its general principles, its specific details, and its fine points were stated from Sinai,"
but a general lesson regarding all the commandments,
that "just as the Sabbatical year, its general principles, its specific details, and its fine points were stated from Sinai, so too all of them, their general principles and their fine points were stated from Sinai."
Therefore Rashi does not write this explanation in the second verse
(where the discussion about the commandment of the Sabbatical year actually begins),
but in the first verse –
because:
a) Here the question immediately arises why the words "on Mount Sinai" appear,
and b) The lesson from "on Mount Sinai" is not only regarding the commandment of the Sabbatical year,
but regarding all the commandments
("all of them").
The question arises:
What is the necessity for Rashi [to say] that "on Mount Sinai" comes to teach not only that the commandment of the Sabbatical year "its general principles, its specific details, and its fine points were stated from Sinai,"
but that "so too all of them, their general principles and their fine points were stated from Sinai"?
Therefore Rashi adds at the end of his explanation –
"Thus it is taught in the Torat Kohanim." At first glance, this is an unusual wording and style:
The usual wording of Rashi in such cases is "Our Rabbis expounded" and the like –
not "Thus it is taught, etc." Furthermore:
When does Rashi write "Our Rabbis expounded"? –
When there is a matter that requires explanation in the plain meaning of the verse and the only explanation for it is from the exposition of our Rabbis,
or the explanation is not so smooth in the plain meaning of Scripture,
therefore Rashi writes "Our Rabbis expounded";
דערפאר שרייבט רש"י "רבותינו דרשו";
But in our case, this is seemingly an explanation that is consistent with the plain meaning of Scripture –
so why does Rashi write "Thus it is taught in the Torat Kohanim"?
The explanation for this is,
that this is precisely the point:
In the plain meaning of Scripture, there is indeed no necessity to explain that "so too all of them, their general principles and their fine points were stated from Sinai,"
because one can easily interpret that specifically the commandment of the Sabbatical year "its general principles, its specific details, and its fine points were stated from Sinai,"
because the commandment of the Sabbatical year is a general commandment,
as we will further learn that due to the nullification of this commandment, the matter of exile comes,
unlike the other commandments, which were not stated "their general principles and their fine points from Sinai."
On the other hand, however, there is no contradiction in the plain meaning of Scripture to say that "so too all of them, their general principles and their fine points were stated from Sinai."
But until one comes to the beginning of Parshat Behar,
there is no place for Rashi to write this –
because the plain meaning of Scripture does not compel it anywhere,
and even here
(at the beginning of Parshat Behar)
it is not a necessity, as mentioned above,
consequently, if Rashi had written it anywhere earlier, the five-year-old student of Scripture would have asked,
Why are you telling me this,
and what is the necessity for it;
און וואו איז דער הכרח לזה;
When one comes, however, to the beginning of Parshat Behar and there it is stated thus in the Torat Kohanim,
and it also helps to understand
(in the plain meaning of Scripture)
why "on Mount Sinai" is stated there –
then Rashi brings it down,
but not in his own name,
rather in the name of the Torat Kohanim,
that "Thus it is taught in the Torat Kohanim,"
because even here the plain meaning of Scripture does not compel it,
rather "Thus it is taught in the Torat Kohanim,"
but what is stated in the Torat Kohanim is not a contradiction to the plain meaning of Scripture,
and on the contrary –
it helps to better understand the words "on Mount Sinai,"
therefore Rashi brings it.
From this matter in Rashi's commentary on our portion –
there is also a lesson in the matter of the love and unity of Israel.
The matter of the counting of the children of Israel in our portion comes from the side of the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel –
"Out of His affection for them before Him, He counts them every hour, etc." And it is a love for all Jews,
without any distinction as to which tribe he belongs,
as is understood from that which the counting of the children of Israel
(which comes from the side of His affection for them before Him)
was from all the tribes equally,
Until –
that the tribe of Levi,
"the legion of the King"
[which in this time applies to all Jews],
is also counted "from a month old and upward,"
"from the time he emerges from the category of stillborn he is counted to be called a guardian of the charge of the holy." Moreover:
In addition to that which the love of the Holy One, blessed be He,
(in a revealed manner)
for "the legion of the King" is "from a month old and upward,"
even very small children
(and therefore they are counted),
already each child receives immediately
("from a month old and upward")
the role of "guardian of the charge of the holy,"
he guards the Mishkan,
in which were all the vessels of the Mishkan,
until also "the main desire in the Mishkan is the place of the resting of the Shechinah, which is the Ark, as it is said, 'And I will meet with you there, etc.,'"
"I will meet" from the term of designation,
the matter of marriage,
whose purpose is –
"and they shall become one flesh,"
not only the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel,
but the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and Israel.
And from this greatness of the affection of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel
("Out of His affection for them before Him, He counts them every hour"),
for all Jews from all the tribes,
until in a manner of the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and Israel –
there also emerges the matter of love of Israel and unity of Israel from one Jew to the other,
because a Jew is "one who loves what the Beloved loves,"
according to the well-known teaching of the Alter Rebbe,
that through that which a Jew has love of G-d,
he also has love of Israel,
because he loves what his Beloved
(the Most High)
loves,
which is the Jews,
as it is said, "I have loved you, says the L-rd"
[as the verse is also brought in the section of the Zohar that is said in the "Tikkun Leil Shavuot"),
and just as the love and affection of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel is for all Jews without distinction between tribe and tribe,
so too is the love of Israel for each individual without distinction:
And these two loves,
love of G-d and love of Israel,
are connected with the third love –
love of the Torah,
until they become completely one,
the Torah, Israel, and the Holy One, blessed be He, are completely one –
which brings out that the love of Israel from one Jew to the other should be in a manner of the unity of Israel,
which is even more than love of Israel.
And in this very matter, there comes a lesson from that which the verse emphasizes that the command regarding the counting of the children of Israel
(because of His affection for them)
was "in the Sinai desert" –
as explained above
(in the explanation of Rashi's commentary),
that "in the Sinai desert" further strengthens His affection for Israel,
that they obeyed the Most High without regard to the fact that because of this they had to find themselves in a desert where "no man dwelt there."
And just as this strengthens the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel,
so it is understood that this also strengthens the love of Israel from one to his fellow,
because "one loves what the Beloved loves."
And one may add to this –
according to the inner dimension of the matters:
The Alter Rebbe explains in Likkutei Torah on our portion that there is also a level of desert
("in the Sinai desert")
of holiness,
which "no man dwelt there" –
which is completely above the entire order of the chain of descent that is depicted in the form of man and man sitting on the throne, etc.
And together with this, he also explains there that "desert" is from the term speech,
connected with the level of speech
[and it is explained elsewhere that the letter mem at the beginning of the word "desert"
is the source of speech],
the level of the ten utterances with which the world was created,
the order of the chain of descent,
which is depicted in the form of man.
That is, that the level of desert which "no man dwelt there,"
above the form of man of the order of the chain of descent –
is drawn down into the world.
And so one may say also regarding the affection for Israel which is expressed in "in the Sinai desert" –
that by means of that which the Jews followed the Most High "in the Sinai desert,"
their connection is brought out with the level of desert which "no man dwelt there" in a superior sense,
the level which is above the order of the chain of descent
(the form of man).
Therefore, this is connected with a great love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for Israel,
and consequently also –
love of Israel and unity of Israel;
אהבת ישראל ואחדות ישראל;
and together with this, it is drawn from there into the world,
into the desert, from the word "speech,"
the ten utterances with which the world was created,
so also, when Jews are found below in the order of the chain of descent, they stand in unity with the Supreme One who is above the order of the chain of descent,
and consequently –
this is also expressed in love of Israel and unity of Israel between one and another,
"for one loves what the beloved loves."
The explanation in the notes on the Zohar,
and the connection with love of Israel up to unity of Israel:
In his note on the Zohar in Parshat Kedoshim
(which he marks in the note in our portion) –
where it is also stated the order "I lay tefillin
(and afterwards)
and I wrap myself in the covering of a mitzvah" –
the father clarifies:
"And it seems that 'and I wrap myself in the covering of a mitzvah,'
the intention is not regarding the donning of the tallit
(for in truth the donning of the tallit must be before the donning of tefillin)
but rather that which covers the tefillin after he has donned them with the tallit, as it is stated in the Mishnah Berurah, Laws of Donning Tefillin, chapter 2, end of Mishnah 9, see there."
It follows,
that there are two matters:
One matter,
that first and foremost there must be the wrapping of the tallit and afterwards the donning of tefillin;
אז לכל לראש דארף זיין עטיפת טלית און דערנאך הנחת תפילין;
and a second matter,
that after the donning of tefillin one must cover them partially with the tallit. This indicates that in relation to the matter of covering the tefillin with the tallit –
the order is,
that the donning of tefillin comes first and afterwards the covering of the tefillin with the tallit.
And based on this, the order in the Zohar is understood,
first tefillin and afterwards tallit –
because the Zohar speaks about the second matter:
the donning of tefillin,
and afterwards the covering of the tefillin with the tallit.
The matter in the service of man:
Tallit and tefillin both relate to the matter of unity:
The tallit encompasses his head and most of his body,
and the explanation of this is not that it encompasses only his head and most of his body,
and not the rest of the body,
but rather it encompasses his head and most of his body,
and most of it is like all of it,
meaning that it encompasses the entire person,
there is no part of the person that is not surrounded by the tallit.
And in the service [of God], the tallit is –
"the King's spread" –
the matter of accepting the yoke of the kingdom of heaven,
as explained in the Tanya, that at the wrapping of the tallit one must intend "to draw upon himself His kingship, etc.,"
and this must encompass the entire person, etc.,
So too, the matter of tefillin is –
unity:
At the time one lays tefillin, one must intend to subjugate the heart and the mind. So much so that this is a part of the mitzvah of tefillin
(similar to how this is also present in the mitzvah of tzitzit and the mitzvah of sukkah),
which indicates that the mitzvah of tefillin consists of the subjugation of the heart and the mind. And in the service [of God], this is also the matter of accepting the yoke.
But there is a difference between the unity and acceptance of the yoke of the tallit and the unity and acceptance of the yoke of tefillin:
The tallit is acceptance of the yoke in a encompassing manner and in a general manner –
that he accepts the yoke of the kingdom of heaven
("to draw upon himself His kingship")
in a general way,
in all matters,
not connected with inwardness and details
[In detail, within the tallit itself there is also encompassing and inner:
the tallit itself is the aspect of encompassing,
and the tzitzit are (approximately in relation to this) the aspect of inwardness,
as explained in the discourses of Chassidus].
And as this is expressed in a physical tallit –
that it encompasses his head and most of his body,
and most of it is like all of it,
without any distinction between the individual limbs of the body.
However, tefillin is an acceptance of the yoke that is connected with inwardness and details:
subjugation of the heart through the tefillin of the hand opposite the heart,
and subjugation of the mind through the tefillin of the head opposite the mind,
and in more detail –
it consists of four compartments and four portions
(in the [tefillin of] the head),
and four portions in one compartment
(in the [tefillin of] the hand),
corresponding to the four intellectual faculties,
and in the language of the Tanya: "to nullify and become included in the aspect of His wisdom and His understanding that are in his divine soul, in the aspect of His wisdom and His understanding of the Infinite One, blessed be He, which are clothed in a particular way in the portion of 'Kadesh' and 'VeHaya Ki Yevi'acha,' etc., and likewise to nullify and become included in the aspect of the knowledge in his soul, which includes [the faculties of] wisdom and understanding, etc., in the aspect of the supernal knowledge, which includes [the faculties of] wisdom and understanding, which is clothed in the portion of 'Shema' and 'VeHaya Im Shamoa,'
and this is as it is stated in the Shulchan Aruch: to subjugate the heart and the mind, etc."
And based on this, the order is understood,
that first there must be the wrapping of the tallit,
afterwards the donning of tefillin,
and afterwards the covering of the tefillin with the tallit:
First of all, there must be acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven,
through the tallit,
and then acceptance of the yoke of commandments,
through tefillin
(for "the entire Torah (commandments) is equated to tefillin").
And in the language of the Midrash:
First there must be "accept My kingship" and only then "accept My decrees,"
"for if they do not accept My kingship, they will not accept My decrees." Therefore, first were the utterances of "I am the Lord your God" and "You shall have no other gods" *169
("accept My kingship"),
and then the other utterances
("My decrees").
And simply:
At the time one fulfills a commandment, first of all there must be the general acceptance of the yoke,
that one accepts upon oneself the yoke of the kingdom of heaven in a general manner,
that one will fulfill everything that the Almighty says. Then there must be the particular acceptance of the yoke and particular intention in each commandment according to its subject.
And this is the concept of wrapping oneself in the tallit and then laying tefillin.
Then there comes another matter,
that after one is already at the particular commandment,
"accept My decrees,"
one must feel in the particular commandment,
that one fulfills it not only because of the particular commandment,
but because of the general intention,
as it is said in the text of the blessing over commandments –
"Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us"
(and then one says in what the particular commandment consists –
"to lay tefillin" and the like).
And this is the concept in the service of "that which covers the tefillin after one has laid them in the tallit" –
that after one is at the particular acceptance of the yoke
(the commandment of tefillin),
there must be heard in it
(in the particular acceptance of the yoke)
the general acceptance of the yoke,
"Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us."
And even though the blessing over the commandment
("Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us")
is recited before the fulfillment of the commandment –
nevertheless, the drawing down that is effected through the blessing
(from the term drawing down)
is drawn down only after the actual fulfillment of the commandment. If one recites the blessing and then does not lay tefillin
(for example),
he does not draw down anything at all,
and on the contrary –
then it is a blessing in vain,
that is, it is the opposite of the will of God,
the opposite of "Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us" and the opposite of the subjugation of the heart and mind!
It follows,
that there are two stages in the entirety of the service:
First one stage,
that first there is acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven,
and then acceptance of the yoke of commandments
(accept My kingship and afterwards accept My decrees);
(קבלו מלכותי ואח"כ קבלו גזירותי);
then comes a second stage,
that in the acceptance of the yoke of commandments
(particular intention)
there must be heard the acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven
(general intention).
And in this itself there are two orders and times:
There are times –
and so is the regular order for the most part –
when the first stage is emphasized,
that one begins first with acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven,
and then one comes to acceptance of the yoke of commandments
(and then –
the feeling of the general acceptance of the yoke in the particular acceptance of the yoke);
דער רגש פון קב"ע כללית אין קב"ע פרטית);
But there are exceptional times –
when the second stage is emphasized,
that one begins with accept My decrees
(acceptance of the yoke of commandments),
a particular commandment,
and then one comes to accept My kingship
(acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven).
As one sees in the example of the two orders in the Ten Commandments:
In general it is said that first there must be the utterance of "I am" and "You shall have no"
(accept My kingship),
and then one can recite to them the rest of the commands
(My decrees).
But one sees that in the Ten Commandments themselves there is the commandment of Shabbat which was already commanded before the giving of the Torah at Marah,
so that in the Ten Commandments themselves one emphasizes regarding the commandment of Shabbat "as the Lord your God commanded you,"
"before the giving of the Torah at Marah" *170.
That is, that first there was the "accept My decrees"
(the commandment of Shabbat),
and then "accept My kingship" at the giving of the Torah.
And this is the difference between the order of wrapping in the tallit and laying tefillin in the regular manner and as the order in this matter stands in the Zohar in our portion:
The regular order is first wrapping in the tallit, then laying tefillin
(as is the law),
and then covering the tefillin with the tallit. But sometimes
(not for the most part) –
about which the Zohar in our portion speaks
(and in Parashat Kedoshim) –
the main emphasis is on the second stage,
that one begins with the particular commandment
(tefillin),
and then one comes to "accept My kingship"
(tallit).
And this is also regarding love of Israel and unity of Israel,
As mentioned above,
then tallit and tefillin are both connected with unity. But in this very thing is the difference:
Tallit indicates a unity in an encompassing manner and in a general manner,
encompassing his head and most of his body,
without any distinction between the particular limbs of the body.
In contrast, tefillin is a unity connected with particulars and inwardness and revelation, etc.
And the order in this is,
that first comes the general unity,
"Accept My kingship"
(tallit),
and afterwards the particular unity,
"Accept My decrees"
(tefillin),
and afterwards, in the particular unity, the general unity must be heard
(covering the tefillin with the tallit).
And in this very thing, there are times when the main emphasis is on the first stage. And a minority of times when the main emphasis is on the second stage.
And corresponding to this is also in love of Israel and unity of Israel:
In the manner of the general difference between acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven and acceptance of the yoke of commandments,
so too there is this difference in several commandments themselves,
that there is the general commandment,
and afterwards how the commandment comes down into particulars:
First and foremost, there is the general commandment of "And you shall love your fellow as yourself." That this is the general commandment that in the feeling of the heart,
a matter that is encompassing and general,
one must love every Jew,
and in the language of the Rambam:
"It is a commandment upon every person to love every single individual of Israel as his own body, as it is said, 'And you shall love your fellow as yourself.'" That the command is regarding the love in the feeling of the heart.
Afterwards, the general commandment comes down into particulars,
as the love of Israel expresses itself in actual deed in various ways –
in the commandment of acts of kindness,
visiting the sick and comforting mourners and the like,
which "are included in 'And you shall love your fellow as yourself.'"
And afterwards comes another matter,
that in the particular expression of love of Israel in the particular commandments
(visiting the sick and the like)
must be heard
(not only the particular matter in this, but)
also the general matter in this,
that all Jews are one thing,
the unity of Israel
(similar to covering the tefillin with the tallit,
as above).
And the explanation of the matter:
The reason for the commandment of love of Israel is, after all,
that all Jews are like "one body." As it is also stated in the Yerushalmi,
that this is similar to how it is not possible that one hand should strike the other hand,
because "all of Israel are one body."
From this it is understood that in this there are two matters,
just as in one body there are two matters:
On one hand, a healthy and complete body consists of a multitude of particular limbs,
a head,
a heart,
legs,
hands,
eyes and ears, etc.,
and it is a healthy body specifically when each particular limb carries out its function in full. On the other hand –
they are not particular limbs that have no connection between themselves,
rather they stand in integration, being limbs of one healthy body.
And the perfection of the health of the body is specifically when one has both matters together,
that each particular limb fulfills its function,
and together with this it feels that it is a part of one body.
That is to say, for example,
not only that it has healthy eyes and it can see properly,
rather the ultimate perfection is,
that the healthy eyes also feel how they are eyes of one healthy body,
and if health is lacking in another limb of the body,
there is also a lack in the eyes
(even if the eyes in and of themselves are in perfection).
So too is this regarding Jews, who "all of Israel are one body":
Every Jew has his particular function that distinguishes him from other Jews. Together with this, he is a part of "one body." And the perfection is specifically when there are both matters:
His particular matter and function must be heard,
and together with this, in this must be heard how he is one thing with all other Jews,
and is a part of a healthy "one body."
And both matters must also be in "And you shall love your fellow as yourself":
Love of Israel must be to such an extent that distinctions between Jews are not heard,
because they are "one body." But together with this, the particular matter of every Jew must also be heard. There must be a revealed feeling of love toward every Jew from the aspect of his particular matter
(with which he distinguishes himself from other Jews).
What in general is this the difference between "Ahavat Yisrael" and "Achdut Yisrael":
"Ahavat Yisrael" is a revealed love for the Jew as an individual. And "Achdut Yisrael" is the unity of all Jews,
where it appears as if they are one thing,
a "Guf Echad".
Which this is analogous to the aforementioned difference between a tallit and tefillin:
A tallit is a unity in a manner that encompasses his head and most of his body, and most of his body is like all of it,
without any distinctions between the individual limbs of the body.
In contrast, tefillin is a unity connected with details.
And in order to have the ultimate perfection of "Ve'ahavta Lere'acha Kamocha" one must have both matters,
for this has what that does not have:
When there is only Ahavat Yisrael,
he has a feeling of love for the other,
the distinctions between Jews are still felt. Specifically when there is Achdut Yisrael,
the perfection of "Ve'ahavta Lere'acha Kamocha" is achieved,
that he becomes united with the other Jew,
until a unity that permeates his entire existence.
On the other hand:
If there is only the matter of Achdut Yisrael
(by virtue of the fact that all Jews are like a "Guf Echad"),
and the love for each Jew from the aspect of his individual matter is not felt,
a completely opposite matter can arise:
He may think to himself,
since it must be "Ve'ahavta Lere'acha Kamocha",
he must conduct himself with the other no better than he conducts himself with himself;
דארף ער זיך מיט יענעם פירן ניט בעסער ווי ער פירט זיך מיט זיך אליין;
since all Jews are a "Guf Echad",
like two hands of the same body –
just as the right hand fasts,
he wants the other hand to also fast;
וויל ער אז די צווייטע האנט זאל אויך פאסטן;
just as he himself practices afflictions and fasts, etc.,
and is satisfied with bread of adversity and water of affliction, etc.,
he wants it to be "Kamocha",
that also the other I should practice afflictions and fasts, etc., and eat bread of adversity and water of affliction!
We have the instruction from the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
that piety one may practice with oneself,
and even then –
one must look into the Shulchan Aruch and into the Igeret HaTeshuvah when it is permitted to practice fasts and afflictions, etc.,
but with another do not practice any piety –
give him what he needs!
When it concerns you yourself,
you may think about conducting yourself beyond the letter of the law;
קענסטו טראכטן וועגן פירן זיך לפנים משורת הדין;
but with another it must be "your life takes precedence over the life of your fellow".
With yourself you may think about practicing stringencies and eating bread of adversity and water of affliction, etc.;
מיט זיך אליין קענסטו טראכטן וועגן פראווען הידורים און עסן לחם צר ומים לחץ וכיו"ב;
but when you see a poor person who needs something to eat –
it must be "you have revived the soul of the poor"! Without interpretations! You see a poor person who needs to eat –
so what does it mean that you will practice piety with him?!
And regarding this concerning every individual Jew –
one must give him charity "his lacking",
according to the measure of what is called "his lacking" for him
(not according to the measure of your level,
but according to the measure of his level),
"a horse to ride upon and a servant to run before him",
until even if "his lacking" is to have "fifty men running before him" –
one must provide it to him as well. And to such an extent,
that even if you cannot find fifty men –
you yourself must run before him!
For this concerns a Jew,
a son of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov. That "even if you make for them a feast like that of Shlomo in his time, you have not fulfilled your obligation"
(as it states regarding the wages of a Jewish worker).
And as the Gemara brings there the story "A certain man came before Rava. He said to him: 'What do you eat for your meal?' He said to him: 'A fattened chicken, etc.'
He said to him: 'And are you not concerned about the burden on the community?' He said to him: 'Do I eat from theirs? I eat from the Merciful One, as it is taught: "The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in its time, etc." This teaches that each and every one the Holy One, blessed be He, provides his sustenance in its time, etc.'"
He argues –
that it is still not "Ve'ahavta Lere'acha Kamocha".
For does "your fellow" not have exactly as much as he himself has?!
One tells him,
that in addition to the unity of Israel
(that it is heard as if all Jews are one body),
there must also be love of Israel,
that he should love the other with a revealed feeling of love,
that one sees openly the love for the other. Regarding which it is required,
that he should love him according to the measure of his level
(not according to the measure of his own level).
If he will conduct himself with the other not according to the other's capacities but according to his own capacities –
this will be the opposite of revealed love!
And as discussed above,
that the ultimate perfection of the health of the body,
and also the unity of the entire body
(as one body),
is specifically when each particular limb fulfills its particular function in perfection,
according to its vessels,
and not through one limb exchanging itself with another limb,
for then this is the ultimate opposite of health.
As is understood simply:
With the approach that he wants the other to be "like you,"
and consequently he will practice with him pious acts and stringencies –
one will indeed begin to demand from the other "fifty men running before him,"
which is only a matter of honor
(not a necessity for the existence of a person),
afterwards he will claim that he also does not deserve "a horse to ride upon,"
which already pertains to arriving from one place to another place,
until he will claim that the other also does not deserve the essential needs,
until –
that he is like a debtor,
whom one leaves only a certain number of garments etc. but not more, Heaven forbid!
One sees from this that the ultimate perfection of "and you shall love your fellow as yourself" is specifically when there is both love of Israel,
revealed love for each one according to his particular level
(like the example of tefillin),
and also the unity of Israel,
a complete unity like a "single body"
(like the example of a tallit which covers his head and most of his body, and most of his body is like all of it).
And in general, the order in this is,
that one begins from the fact that Jews are a "single body"
(the unity of Israel).
Afterwards it is drawn into particulars,
love of Israel for each one according to his particular matter. Afterwards, in these particulars, one must hear not only each one as a particular
(because then there is still a division between them),
but the general matter –
that he is one
(a limb)
of a "single body"
(for then the particular limb also stands in perfection and in ultimate health).
And in this itself there are two orders:
There are times when the emphasis is on the first stage,
that one must begin with the unity of Israel,
and afterwards this must be drawn into the particulars;
און דערנאך דארף דאס נמשך ווערן אין די פרטים;
and sometimes,
when the emphasis is on the second stage,
that there must be love of Israel,
the love for each one as a particular,
afterwards one must hear in this the matter of the unity of Israel,
which is also the perfection and health of each one as a particular,
as above.
Regarding this, in the current chapter of Pirkei Avot, there is a lesson concerning the matter of love of Israel and the unity of Israel:
On this Shabbat, one learns the sixth chapter,
the chapter "Acquisition of Torah." Immediately at the beginning of the chapter it states:
"Rabbi Meir
(named for being 'one who enlightens the eyes of the wise')
says: Anyone who engages in Torah for its own sake merits many things":
The expression "many things" in the Torah of truth means without limit,
which includes everything,
because if not,
one cannot say "many,"
since there is more than that. Rather, because a created being cannot comprehend without limit,
therefore he says the expression "many."
And afterwards he continues and adds another elevated matter that comes with "anyone who engages in Torah for its own sake":
"And not only that, but the entire world is worthy for him."
And afterwards he specifies particulars:
"He is called a friend,
beloved,"
that is, a friend and beloved of the Holy One, blessed be He,
the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, for him.
"He loves the Omnipresent, he loves the creations":
Love of God and love of Israel. And he says them simultaneously,
without a conjunctive vav
(between "he loves the Omnipresent" and "he loves the creations"),
because love of God and love of Israel are one thing.
And the wording here is "loves the creations,"
that the love must be even towards those who are called by the name "creations,"
meaning that they are "distant from the Torah of G-d and His service and therefore are called merely creations"
(as explained in Tanya),
because they have no other virtue besides the fact that they are creations of the Holy One, blessed be He –
one must also have towards them "loves the creations." And furthermore:
The "loves the creations" comes together with "loves the Omnipresent"
(without a conjunctive vav),
as above.
Afterwards he adds another thing –
"gladdens the Omnipresent gladdens the creations":
Not only is he "loves the Omnipresent loves the creations,"
which can be in a manner that it remains only in the feeling of the heart
(indeed "with all your heart,"
but only in the heart),
not in the other parts of the body,
but rather furthermore:
He is also "gladdens the Omnipresent gladdens the creations"
(also with a conjunctive vav between them,
because it is one thing,
as above),
for joy is not only in one limb of the body,
rather it permeates the entire body.
According to the simple understanding of the matter:
It is not possible to say that one foot is joyful and the second foot is not joyful,
rather it stands in sadness! Joy means that it permeates his entire body. To the extent that true joy permeates also other people,
as it is written "And you shall rejoice in your festival, you and your son and your daughter and your manservant and your maidservant and the Levite and the stranger and the orphan and the widow who are within your gates"!
That is, the addition of "gladdens the creations" relative to "loves the creations" is analogous to the addition of the unity of Israel relative to the love of Israel,
not only that he loves the other
(in the feeling of the heart),
but the distinctions between them are still felt,
rather the love expresses itself in "gladdens the creations,"
for joy breaks through boundaries,
so that it permeates entirely,
to the extent that one becomes one thing,
and the distinction between the details of the limbs is not felt
(analogous to how it is in the body of a person himself,
that joy permeates all the limbs of the body).
On the other hand, there is the advantage in "loves the creations" relative to "gladdens the creations" –
in the manner of the aforementioned superiority of the love of Israel over the unity of Israel –
that there must also be a revealed love towards every individual Jew,
which is specifically through "loves the creations,"
unlike from the aspect of "gladdens the creations,"
that all are one entity,
it could result from this that he should claim that just as the right hand fasts,
so too must the left hand
(of the same one body)
fast. As discussed above at length.
Also from today's lesson in the Rambam there is a lesson in the greatness of the matter of the love of Israel:
At the conclusion of today's lesson the Rambam writes:
"A rumor went out about the virgin etc. we do not pay attention to it"
("except with clear testimony or with an admission of the mouth"),
and to such an extent that "and she may marry a High Priest,"
to the "Holy of Holies" among Israel!
From this one sees how far one must have love of Israel,
to such an extent that even if it concerns a daughter of Israel regarding whom there was not "all the glory of the king's daughter is within,"
and the proof is that a rumor went out about her that they proclaim about her in the entire city
(and if she had been found "within" such a rumor could not have been) –
nevertheless the law is that ab initio "we do not pay attention to it,"
to the extent that "and she may marry a High Priest"!
Because "all of Israel are presumed to be of kosher lineage,"
and all the more so when it concerns a daughter of Israel,
who is a daughter of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah,
for "Sarah our mother descended to Egypt and guarded herself etc. and all the women were guarded in her merit,"
and a daughter of the righteous women in Egypt,
for "there was not found among them even one who was promiscuous etc.,
know that it was so, one there was and Scripture publicized her, as it is said 'and the name of his mother was Shelomit the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan,'"
"to make known the praise of Israel that there was not found among them except this one and Scripture publicized her."
That is, that even though the nations come with a kal vachomer
[which is indeed one of the thirteen principles through which the Torah is expounded, which is a principle based on intellect,
and therefore one can say it on his own)
"If over their bodies they ruled
(the Egyptians)
kal vachomer over their women" *203 –
(in addition to the protection "that the Holy One, blessed be He, cast His name upon them etc." *203 is)
the verse testifies that this is a lie,
because "one there was and Scripture publicized her." "And the name of his mother was Shelomit the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan,"
and all the rest of the women and daughters of Israel are in the category of "my sister, my beloved, my dove, my perfect one"!
And even regarding Shlomit bat Divri –
it is her merit,
that through her was revealed the revelation of "the praise of Israel,"
that "not one of them was found to be immoral, etc.,"
"Know that it was so; there was one [such woman] and Scripture publicized her, as it is said, 'And the name of his mother was Shlomit bat Divri of the tribe of Dan'!"
And based on this, it is resolved why indeed "Scripture publicized her,"
for at first glance:
Even regarding the disgrace of a non-kosher animal, Scripture did not speak,
all the more so regarding a Jewish daughter?!
Rather, this very thing that "Scripture publicized her" is a merit for Shlomit bat Divri,
that through her was brought out the most sublime revelation of the praise of Israel, that "not one of them was found to be immoral"!
There are those who can ask:
From where does one take such an interpretation? Indeed, a fine interpretation,
a good interpretation,
but nevertheless an interpretation of a "preacher"!
One finds an example of this regarding the wood gatherer:
Our Sages, of blessed memory, say that the wood gatherer intended for the sake of Heaven,
The Maharsha explains: "His intention was so that it would be known by what death those who desecrate the Sabbath are judged." And he had the merit that through him, a clarification in the laws of Shabbat was brought about until the end of all generations and in all worlds, up to the brightness of the firmament!
[And the question: "How could he sin regarding the prohibition of Shabbat in order to know by what death those who desecrate the Sabbath are judged?" –
The Maharsha explains –
"One can say that since he did not need this labor for its own sake, but only to know by what death, etc., it is a labor that is not required for its own sake, etc., for which one is exempt according to Rabbi Shimon [or that he is exempt based on the law that all who cause damage are exempt],
Nevertheless, he would certainly have been liable to the death penalty by human law, since the witnesses who warned him did not know that he acted with this intention, and these are merely matters of the heart, and they would have judged him to death based on the testimony,"
Because "a judge has only what his eyes see."
Even though it is revealed before Heaven that he does not deserve death,
and on the contrary –
his intention was for the sake of Heaven,
and he receives reward for this in the Garden of Eden and seven hundred worlds, etc.,
but below, one must judge him according to what they see with their physical eyes].
Regarding this, one can say concerning Shlomit bat Divri,
that it is her merit that "Scripture publicized her" that "there was one, etc., Shlomit bat Divri" –
because through this comes out the clarification and revelation of the praise of Israel until the end of all generations,
that "not one of them was found to be immoral"!
There are those who ask further the question:
Who says that one must specifically seek merit for Shlomit bat Divri?!
It is a waste of time to occupy oneself with those who do not understand why one must endeavor to seek merit for every Jew,
all the more so for a Jewish daughter whose name is mentioned in the Torah,
consequently, it has the full force of holiness exactly like "I am the Lord your God,"
as the Rambam writes,
that "there is no difference between...
and Timna was a concubine and 'I am the Lord your God,'"
and "Timna" was a non-Jew,
and before the giving of the Torah,
all the more so Shlomit bat Divri,
a Jewish daughter after the giving of the Torah!
And all the more so, since in the Torah itself it is emphasized that "Scripture publicized her,"
which itself is the greatest defense of merit for her,
that despite the fact that the Torah is careful not to mention even the disgrace of an animal,
all the more so of a Jewish daughter,
"Scripture publicized" the name of Shlomit bat Divri,
it must not be a matter of disgrace,
but rather a matter of merit for her,
as discussed above!
And from this one sees how far the matter of love of Israel must extend to every Jew,
even to one about whom a negative report has gone out,
even to one such as Shlomit bat Divri
(as above)!
And as is explained at length
(relatively)
in Tanya, chapter 32,
that love of Israel must extend even to "creatures,"
"who are distant from the Torah of the Lord and His service, etc.,"
as explained there.
And even regarding those about whom King David said, "I hate them with utmost hatred, etc." –
the Alter Rebbe writes there, "as it is brought in the Gemara, at the beginning of chapter 16 of Shabbat,"
and based on what is known about the great precision of the Alter Rebbe in the book of Tanya,
one must understand why he indicates the name of the tractate
("Shabbat"),
unlike in other places in the Tanya where he brings many matters without citing their source?
And it is possible that one of the explanations of this is,
that by this he hints that even regarding those about whom David said "I hate them with utmost hatred,"
one must know that this is stated in the Gemara "Shabbat,"
that on Shabbat "all judgments are removed from her, etc., and all masters of wrath and masters of judgments all flee and are removed from her, etc.,"
as we say in "Kegavna" in the order of Kabbalat Shabbat,
which is said already during the time of "Erev Shabbat"
("the prayer of Erev Shabbat"),
even before the evening prayer of Shabbat,
not only before the silent prayer,
but also before the Shema and its blessings.
Until that one is already permitted in work –
already here the concept of "all judgments are removed from her, etc." is present,
which comes about because "just as they are united above in one, so too she is united below in the secret of one to be with them above, one corresponding to one,"
from above to below,
and through this there is also from below to above
[as is known that there are two movements,
"and I will walk among you,"
a movement from above to below and a movement from below to above],
that through the unity below
(love of Israel and unity of Israel)
unity above is brought about –
"above He does not sit on the throne of His glory until she is made in the secret of one like Him, to be one in one."
And all the more so that the nullification of undesirable matters and the unity on Shabbat is even more intense and powerful after the time of Erev Shabbat
(when we say "Kegavna"),
when one already enters into Shabbat itself.
And all the more so on the day of Shabbat itself,
and all the more so during the time of "the desire of desires" of Shabbat,
during the time of the afternoon prayer,
as we already say then that it is "a day of rest, etc.,"
and there are no harsh judgments, etc.,
And as is known that on Shabbat itself, the ultimate elevation is during the time of the afternoon prayer and the time of the desire of desires on Shabbat,
the third meal,
which also corresponds to our father Jacob,
the third of the patriarchs,
whose blessing is "an inheritance without boundaries,"
"and you shall spread forth to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south,"
a blessing without end and without limit,
and also particularly connected with the concept of the unity of Israel,
as is known that the soul of our father Jacob "includes all the souls of Israel from beginning to end,"
consequently it relates to the concept of the unity of Israel.
And Jacob also relates to unity in all the lines in the service of man –
as is known that Jacob corresponds to the central line,
the sefirah of Tiferet,
which includes within itself and unifies the three lines,
the line of the right –
acts of kindness,
the line of the left –
service
(prayer),
and the central line
(as it stands as a line in its own right,
and a sefirah (Tiferet) in its own right) –
Torah.
And in continuation of this,
that at this time
(the time of the desire of desires)
the concept of love of Israel and unity of Israel stands with special emphasis –
this is the place to arouse again,
since the day is still long,
one should endeavor to utilize the time that remains on this Shabbat by making gatherings for the sake of love of Israel and unity of Israel,
and particularly connected with "great is drinking which brings close,"
as discussed above.
And may it be His will that all this should hasten even more the true and complete redemption,
and particularly since we stand in the time of the desire of desires,
a semblance and likeness of "a day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds,"
connected with the blessing of Jacob,
"an inheritance without boundaries,"
which is connected with the most essential, inner, and soulful blessing –
the third redemption,
and the third Holy Temple which is called a house corresponding to our father Jacob,
and all Jews go to our holy land,
and in the manner of "and behold, with the clouds of heaven,"
with the coming of our righteous Mashiach,
and he will teach the entire people Torah,
until we reach the time when "they shall no longer teach each man his fellow, etc., for they shall all know Me, from their smallest to their greatest,"
where "Me" refers to the essence and being,
therefore there will be no differences in this, and for all,
"from their smallest to their greatest,"
there will be "they shall know Me,"
not as it is in the aspect of revelations where there are differences between "their smallest" and "their greatest."
And this is like the explanation in Chassidus regarding the difference between the Garden of Eden and the resurrection of the dead,
that the Garden of Eden is connected with the aspect of revelations,
therefore there are differences in levels in this,
and furthermore this is dependent on the service of man,
and in this itself –
there are differences between Jews in the magnitude of the reward in the Garden of Eden:
However, regarding the time of the End of Days –
that which comes from Essence and Being
(which is above revelations, etc.)
there are no distinctions of levels, and it is not dependent on the service of man,
rather "All Israel have a share in the World to Come,"
and even those of whom it is said "except,"
that they have no share in the World to Come –
it is explained in Chassidus based on the statement of our Sages, of blessed memory,
that they already received their punishment long ago, which rectified everything,
until it became "intentional sins are accounted for him as merits,"
until actual "merits"
(without a "kaf" of comparison).
And their silver and their gold with them,
both physically and spiritually:
"Their silver" corresponds to love,
which includes all 248 positive commandments,
and "the general principles and details" that were stated at Sinai,
and "their gold" corresponds to fear,
which includes all 365 negative commandments,
and "the general principles and details" that were stated at Sinai,
"With our young and with our old, etc., with our sons and with our daughters,"
"A great congregation shall return here,"
and with joy and with a good heart,
and in our actual immediate [redemption].
Since we are soon going into the synagogues –
this is the place to again remind
(as was discussed at length in past years),
that one should arouse in every place:
that on the Festival of Weeks, for the reading of the Ten Commandments in public,
one should bring to the synagogue all Jewish children,
boys and girls,
for they are the "guarantors" for the giving of the Torah to all Jews,
including even very small children,
even "from a month old and upward,"
who are all from the "legion of the King,"
"the hosts of the L-rd" who serve the King and add to the honor of the King,
up to "keeper of the holy guard."
And to note that regarding the Song of the Sea,
whose reading was a preparation for the Giving of the Torah
(as explained in Torah Or),
"Even fetuses in their mothers' wombs recited the song,"
meaning that they recited the song verbally exactly like "Then sang Moses and the Children of Israel, etc."!
For "The Torah that Moses commanded us is an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob,"
as an inheritance for every Jew,
even for a newborn infant,
who is also an heir of everything.
From one subject to another, this is also the place to arouse:
Just as was spoken several times regarding providing
(for those who need it)
the needs of the festival of the Festival of Passover and the Festival of Sukkot –
so too must one do for the Festival of Weeks.
For although the Festival of Passover and the Festival of Sukkot are seven days,
and eight days outside the Land,
and additionally one then needs special needs –
matzah and all the needs of the Seder on the Festival of Passover,
and the Four Species on the Festival of Sukkot,
however, the Festival of Weeks is only one day or two days,
and then there are no special needs –
nevertheless, Shavuot has within it the concept
(which is not present on the Festival of Passover and the Festival of Sukkot)
that "All agree on Atzeret that we also require 'for yourselves.'" Up to what the Gemara relates about one who "all year he would fast, except for Atzeret and Purim."
One must certainly provide the needs of the festival of the Festival of Weeks for each and every one, so that they can celebrate it in a manner of "for yourselves." From this it is understood that one must provide the needs
("that which he lacks")
to each and every one according to his worth
(which for him (her) is called "for yourselves"),
as is the law,
that in honor of the festival one buys garments for the women,
and for the children, nuts and sweets, etc.
And all the more so that one must endeavor to prepare all Jews, men, women, and children,
for the spiritual content of the time of the Giving of our Torah –
that all should prepare for the acceptance of the Torah with joy and inwardness
(in the language of his Holiness, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe).
And in a manner that this should be a lasting effect,
and from this should be drawn reinforcement in the study of Torah and fulfillment of the commandments with beautification throughout all the days of the year,
so that every day of the year should be recognizable as the time of the Giving of our Torah,
in a manner that "it should not be in your eyes like an old edict, etc., but like a new one" until "every day they should be in your eyes as new" literally.
And may it be His will that through this addition in our deeds and our service, the Almighty should bless each one with the fulfillment of the wishes of the heart of all Israel,
Until the main blessing –
Then, immediately after the time of the giving of our Torah this year, the true and complete redemption comes,
and one will receive the Torah with joy and with inwardness,
together with the fulfillment of the commandments in the manner of "as the commandment of Your will,"
beginning with the study of the Torah of the offerings,
as one must offer them "as the commandment of Your will,"
and especially and primarily –
the study of the inwardness of the Torah,
which will be the primary study in the future to come,
and from this one will know how the matters are in the revealed aspect of the Torah
(as explained in the Epistle of the Holy One).
And through the preparation for this now,
by means of that which every Jew prepares himself for the reception of the Torah with joy and with inwardness –
one hastens even more to this
(and the holy Rebbe, may he live for many good days, amen, began to sing)
"He will build the Holy Temple speedily in our days."
Afterward he said:
Those who need to make an after-blessing,
will certainly make an after-blessing.
