English translation 1
It is Shabbat Parashat HaChodesh,
It is Shabbat Parashat HaChodesh,
Shabbat Kodesh Mevarchim the month of Nissan,
the month of redemption,
as our Sages said1 "in which
(in Nissan)
Israel were redeemed from Egypt and in which they are destined to be redeemed, as it is said:2 'As in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show him wonders'" also now in the future redemption from this last exile.
That is, that the present time
(in every year) –
beginning from Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Nissan when we proclaim and bless and give strength to Rosh Chodesh Nissan which includes within itself all the days of the month,
including the fifteenth of it
(the festival of Pesach) –
is an auspicious time that the redemption from this last exile should come,
"as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show him wonders."
And contrary to the opinion of those who err that "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show him wonders" is a matter not for the better, Heaven forbid, which stands with a kaf of comparison
("like the days of") –
but on the contrary:
The Tzemach Tzedek brings3
(from the Zohar4)
that in the future redemption there will be "I will show him wonders" even in relation to the wonders of the redemption from Egypt!
In this, additional strength comes in this year:
The determination of the festival of Pesach and Rosh Chodesh Nissan in this year
(and consequently –
Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Nissan)
is the same determination
(in the days of the week)
as it was "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt" –
on the fifth day of the week –
as the Alter Rebbe writes in his Shulchan Aruch5
[in the Gemara6 there are opinions about this],
that the Exodus from Egypt
(on the fifteenth of Nissan)
was on the fifth day of the week
(and from this it is understood that also Rosh Chodesh Nissan was on the fifth day),
as it comes out in the determination of this year.
From this it is understood,
that the matter of the redemption,
"as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show him wonders",
stands with greater strength and vigor on Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan of this year
(more than in every year) –
because the determination in this year is the same "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt" not only in the days of the month,
but also in the days of the week,
and as has been said many times7 that when a day falls out both on the same day of the month and on the same day of the week as the day which it commemorates,
then the matter of that day stands with emphasis, with greater strength and vigor.
This does not mean, however,
of course,
that one must wait until the fifteenth of Nissan
(the time of our freedom)
until we will go out from exile
(as it was "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt"),
rather this can come immediately and at once even after Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh –
which has an advantage even over Rosh Chodesh Nissan and over the fifteenth of Nissan,
because it can bless and give strength to Rosh Chodesh Nissan and to the festival of Pesach and to the entire month of Nissan.
As Jews say in the prayer of every day "May our eyes behold Your return to Zion with mercy",
and at the conclusion of this Shabbat they will also say –
"The shoot of Your servant David may You speedily cause to flourish",
and since this
("speedily")
is a prayer of a human being,
it means "speedily" in human language,
according to the understanding and comprehension of flesh and blood,
that is, "speedily" literally,
and if it is delayed even for one extra moment then that is the opposite of "speedily".
And especially taking into consideration that this is an exile of sixty myriads of general souls,
each of which divides into sixty myriads of particular souls
(as explained in Tanya8),
and together with them is the Shechinah in exile9 with His chariot and the ministering angels etc. –
it is therefore understandable that if the redemption is delayed for even one moment,
how far is this then from "The shoot of Your servant David may You speedily cause to flourish"!
From this it is understood that "speedily" means literally –
immediately and at once, actually. In a manner of "the place did not delay
(even)
the blink of an eye" –
as it was "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt"10.
And on the contrary:
Since a redemption in a manner of "the place did not delay
(even)
the blink of an eye" is not "new under the sun",
rather "it has already been for ages"12 in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt –
it is therefore understandable that now one need not come to a suspension of nature and to create a new reality,
because if "that which was not, was"
(through a miracle and innovation)
all the more so "that which was, was"13,
and in a natural way this can happen again.
And this is even if the matter
(that the redemption must already come in a manner of "the place did not delay (even) the blink of an eye")
would not be necessary according to nature now,
it is also easier to carry out because "that which was, was";
איז דאס אויך לייכטער דורכצופירן וויבאלד אז "מאי דהוה הוה";
All the more so in the present reality according to nature, where "all the appointed times have passed and the matter depends only on repentance"14,
and repentance can be achieved through a single thought,
which is merely the blink of an eye,
one then becomes a complete righteous person15. And for this one need not reach a multitude of Jews,
rather even one Jew,
through one mitzvah
(one action,
one speech,
or one thought,
including one [moment of] reflection)
can tip the scales for himself and the entire world to the side of merit and bring salvation and deliverance to himself and to them,
as per the ruling of the Rambam16.
All the more so when it is Shabbat Parshat HaChodesh and Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan,
when we announce about Rosh Chodesh Nissan and bless Rosh Chodesh Nissan and the entire month of Nissan,
of which it is said "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show you wonders". And especially in the fixed calendar of this year, when the calendar setting is "as in the days of your exodus from Egypt" –
it is certainly a propitious time to bring the redemption.
To this is added further power from the weekly Torah portion –
Parshat Shemini,
according to the teaching of the Alter Rebbe17 that one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion that is read at that time:
Regarding "And it was on the eighth day"
(for all the matters of the portion are called by the name of the portion –
"Shemini")
our Sages said18
(and Rashi brings this down in his commentary on the Torah at the beginning of the portion),
that "that day took ten crowns".
A "crown" is a matter that is above measurement and limitation. Accordingly, it is understood that this is connected to redemption
(the concept of the month of Nissan)
which is above the measurement and limitation of the concept of exile.
And on the eighth day there was not merely one crown,
rather "ten crowns",
the perfection of "crowns"19
(as is known that ten indicates the perfection of the matter20).
And furthermore, the expression
(unusual)
"took ten crowns"
(not "on that day there were ten crowns",
or "a day of ten crowns"):
The expression "took"
(according to the true Torah)
indicates that the day need not come to any kindnesses that they should give him the "ten crowns" as a gift,
he need not even ask for them –
rather "took ten crowns",
he takes them himself without anyone's permission,
because they belong to him according to the true Torah!
From this is understood the superiority of that day,
when a Jew must live with the concept of "And it was on the eighth day",
that "that day took ten crowns" –
that he then lives with the concept of "ten crowns", with the perfection of the concept of crowns
(which is connected to the concept of redemption),
and in a manner that on that day it stands revealed and emphasized how each individual is completely the master over the "ten crowns",
therefore he takes them without anyone's permission,
"took ten crowns".
And this applies
(and is understood simply)
to every Jew,
even to a child of five years [versed] in Scripture,
as understood from the fact that Rashi brings it in his commentary on the Torah, whose purpose is the plain meaning of Scripture,
also for a child of five years [versed] in Scripture:
A child of five years [versed] in Scripture knows that there are matters that he must ask for;
א בן חמש למקרא ווייסט אז עס זיינען דא ענינים וועלכע ער דארף בעטן;
matters that he must earn;
ענינים וועלכע ער דארף פארדינען;
matters in which he also needs to find favor<sup>21</sup>;
ענינים אין וועלכע ער דארף אויך האבן נשיאת חן 21;
then there are matters that he takes without asking and without permission,
because they belong to him.
Consequently, he understands the superiority of that day "took ten crowns" –
that it is such a day that the ten crowns belong to him,
so that he need not come to any kindnesses and he need not ask,
rather he comes and takes them himself!
And since Rashi explains this to a small child,
a child of five years [versed] in Scripture,
it is understood that this applies to all Jews without exception,
for every individual is at least in the category of "small",
"a child of five years [versed] in Scripture":
When speaking about other levels –
there can be a discussion whether the Jew has a connection to it or not;
קען זיין א שקו"ט צי דער איד האט דערצו א שייכות אדער ניט;
when, however, it speaks about the matter that every Jew is a "small child" of the Holy One, blessed be He,
"a child of five years [versed] in Scripture",
this is so for all Jews –
as it is written22 "For Israel is a youth and I love him". And this indicates the essential connection of every Jew with the Most High23.
That is, regardless of his status and situation,
he is always essentially one thing with the Most High –
"You are children to Hashem your God"24.
The verse states explicitly25 "The Torah that Moshe commanded us is an inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov,"
so that everyone, without exception,
from the smallest of the small to the greatest of the great,
is a master over the entire Torah which was given to him as an inheritance. As is known, in the matter of inheritance there is no difference based on a person's level. Even an infant who has just come into the world
inherits everything.26
And therefore it is understood
that every Jew,
by virtue of his essential quality, by virtue of his essential connection with the Most High,
and he is an heir of the entire Torah,
he is a master over the "ten crowns,"
therefore he can come and take them himself
("he took").
This matter is also emphasized in today's lesson of Rambam –
the last three chapters of the Laws of a Torah Scroll:
The third chapter
(the conclusion of today's lesson of three chapters) –
and this
(third)
itself has a connection to the future redemption
(discussed above),
"a threefold cord"27 corresponding to the third Beis HaMikdash –
is also the tenth chapter
(corresponding to "ten crowns").
And at the conclusion of the tenth chapter the Rambam writes:
"Anyone who sits before a Torah scroll should sit with gravity, in awe and fear,
for it is the faithful witness for all who come into the world, as it is said28 'And it shall be there with you as a witness.'" And "with you" simply refers to Jews.
That is, a Torah scroll
("this Torah scroll" *28)
is a witness regarding Jews.
And in this there is a wondrous thing:
It is known29 that the matter of testimony applies only "to a matter that is hidden and concealed from the eyes of all." Regarding a revealed matter,
and even regarding a matter that is destined to be revealed30
(as Chassidus adds29)
there is no need to resort to testimony,
because it is revealed
(or destined to be revealed)
in any case.
So too regarding the "testimony" that Jews give about the Most High –
"You are My witnesses"31
(as discussed in a previous farbrengen32) –
that this refers to the levels in Divinity that are inherently hidden,
and Jews testify about them,
but regarding the aspect of Divinity that is inherently revealed in the world,
Jews need not give testimony.
From this it is also understood regarding the testimony of a Torah scroll
("the faithful witness")
about Jews
("And it shall be there with you as a witness"):
Regarding the essential matter that "You have chosen us from all the nations"33 there is no need to resort to testimony
(from a Torah scroll),
because it is a matter revealed to all that at the giving of the Torah the Most High chose the Jews and afterwards gave them the Land of Israel, etc.
Rather, a Torah scroll is a "witness" regarding the hidden matters and qualities in Jews that are sometimes concealed and might not be seen otherwise,
a Torah scroll testifies about them!
To the extent that a Torah scroll is a "witness" regarding the very essence of Jews –
the essential connection of Jews with the Most High
(which exists in all Jews –
"For Israel is a youth and I love him,"
and therefore the Torah is an inheritance for every single Jew,
even a newborn infant)
which is beyond any matter of revelation,
a Torah scroll is a "faithful witness" about this, which reveals it in the world.34
From this it is understood,
that even when the qualities of a Jew are not entirely revealed,
this is not like the opinion of fools who seek faults in Jews,
and say that here one sees a fault and there a fault and one does not see any qualities, etc. –
one must know that what others say is completely irrelevant,
for in the world there exists a Torah scroll that is a "faithful witness" regarding the hidden qualities of Jews!
And even if one would want to say
(although the reality is not so)
that there is a person who does not have these qualities –
according to Torah law, testimony has the power to create a new reality,
even if the actual reality is otherwise.
As the Rambam rules35 that "we are commanded to decide the law based on two kosher witnesses, even though it is possible that they testified falsely,
since they are kosher in our eyes, we presume them to be kosher."
However, there is a new and unique law regarding this,
that there can be a reality of conspiring witnesses.36 But as long as no other witnesses come who say that the previous witnesses testified falsely,
we believe them and the reality is according to their testimony,
even if the reality was truly not so.
From this it is understood regarding the "faithful witness"
(a Torah scroll)
about Jews,
that even if it were to be said that one must come to a change of reality in the virtue of the Jewish people,
it also affects the "faithful witness" by giving testimony that Jews have all the virtues that are written in this Torah scroll;
טוט עס אויך אויף דער "עד הנאמן" דורך זאגן עדות אז אידן האבן די אלע מעלות וואס שטייען אין דעם ספר תורה;
all the more so that the actual reality is that "you are children to Hashem your God" and Jews have a constant essential connection with the Most High and they have all the virtues,
only sometimes the virtues are in concealment and covered –
the "faithful witness",
the Torah scroll,
reveals them.
And even though for this one needs a kosher Torah scroll,
for which one needs various conditions –
all this was said regarding a particular Torah scroll;
איז דאס אלץ גערעדט געווארן בנוגע צו א ספר תורה מסויים;
but it is a clear and simple thing that certainly there is in the world a kosher Torah scroll that is a "faithful witness" about Jews.
And furthermore, the main point:
Certainly the Torah scroll of Moses
(which he placed in the Ark37,
and from it they would correct all Torah scrolls38)
exists forever as a "witness" about Jews. For so it is written in the Torah of Moses –
about which
(the very concept of the Torah of Moses)
one needs no other testimony,
as the Rambam writes39 that "our eyes saw and no stranger, etc.",
and consequently "all of Israel are witnesses to him" because they themselves saw it –
it is written in the Torah of Moses,
the eternal Torah,
that Moses our teacher wrote a Torah scroll and said to the Levites "Take this Torah scroll and place it at the side of the Ark of the covenant of Hashem your God, and it shall be there among you as a witness"28,
as an eternal witness,
regarding all the virtues of Jews
(that are written in the Torah scroll),
also the hidden virtues!
And because the Torah scroll testifies and reveals in the world the essential connection of Jews with the Most High and all the virtues that Jews have
(also the hidden virtues) –
it is understandable how every Jew can be "one who takes the ten crowns",
seemingly:
What kind of taker is he?!
A Torah scroll testifies about him –
that he is a Jew,
a son of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob40 and a daughter of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah41,
and he is an heir of the entire Torah,
along with all his other virtues – therefore he is a "taker" of the "ten crowns",
and need not ask anyone,
for he is the master over them!
This virtue of Jews and the testimony about it from a Torah scroll exists in all times;
וואס די מעלה פון אידן און די עדות על זה פון א ספר תורה איז דא בכל הזמנים;
but there are special times when it stands more revealed and emphasized.
And among them is also the present time of the year –
Shabbat Parshat HaChodesh,
and Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan,
when we bless Rosh Chodesh Nissan,
when the virtue of Israel is emphasized and revealed, in connection with the matter of redemption –
as in the teaching42 "When the Holy One, blessed be He, chose His world, He established in it new moons and years,
and when He chose Jacob and his sons, He established in it the new moon of redemption, in which Israel were redeemed from Egypt and in which they are destined to be redeemed."
That is, before there was a special reality of Rosh Chodesh Nissan,
"the new moon of redemption",
there was also a reality of twelve months,
immediately at the beginning of creation
(after the diminishing of the moon occurred,
"the small luminary"43),
but then the virtue of Jews was not yet revealed
("Jacob and his sons")
and the reality of "the new moon of redemption";
און די מציאות פון "ר"ח של גאולה";
specifically "when He chose Jacob and his sons, He established in it the new moon of redemption",
when the virtue of Jews is revealed –
the choice of the Most High in the entirety of the people of Israel,
which brings out in revelation the essential virtue in every Jew,
that he is connected with the Most High,
from the smallest of the small,
to the greatest of the great,
as emphasized in the phrase "He chose Jacob and his sons",
both "Jacob" and "his sons",
which includes even a newborn infant
(who is also an heir of the entire Torah).
And especially since the name of the month is "Nissan",
because in it miracles were performed for Israel44,
and according to the words of our sages45 that the many letters nun indicate many miracles, it follows that "Nissan" is the concept of miracles of miracles performed for them. This affects,
that even if the virtue of Jews is still in concealment,
there is a covering or the like upon it –
at the time when miracles of miracles are performed for them,
it certainly stands revealed.
This itself
(since it is the month of Nissan,
the month of redemption and miracles of miracles were performed for them)
can, however, be in concealment;
קען אבער שטיין בהעלם;
but when Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Nissan arrives, it comes out in the open before the eyes of all –
because then we announce
(in the blessing of the month)
in speech and openly about Rosh Chodesh Nissan and we bless the month,
which brings out in the open the matter of "He chose Yaakov and his sons" when then "He established for them a Rosh Chodesh of redemption",
and afterwards we say "and let us say Amen",
so that this comes down in revelation below46.
And particularly in this year when Rosh Chodesh Nissan
(and the festival of Pesach)
is in the same fixed order
(in the days of the week)
as it was "like the days of your going out from the land of Egypt"
(on the fifth day of the week –
as was announced in the blessing of the month) –
then the aforementioned superiority of the Jewish people stands even more in the open.
And particularly since it is also Shabbat Parshat Shemini,
when the Jewish people "live" with the matter of "he took ten crowns".
And in all of this itself, it is the day of Shabbat –
when "all your work is done"47,
all matters are in a manner of delight48.
Therefore, from all these matters it is understandable,
that in this present time the testimony of a Sefer Torah regarding the superiorities of the Jewish people stands even more in revelation down here
(also their hidden superiorities),
as it is stated in today's lesson of the Rambam –
and consequently it is understandable that it is a certain thing that the Jewish people are full masters over the "ten crowns". Therefore, regarding them it is "he took ten crowns",
they take it themselves and do not need to ask it from anyone!
Further:
The "he took ten crowns" of a Jew
(by virtue of his superiorities)
in this present time
(when "one lives" with the parshah,
"And it was on the eighth day",
"that day he took ten crowns") –
is not only by virtue of his soul,
but also by virtue of his body and by virtue of all his physical matters,
that all of them "live" with the matter of "he took ten crowns",
i.e., that also his body and his physicality are "he took ten crowns".
And as is understood from the simple explanation in the aforementioned Torah of the Alter Rebbe regarding living with the time
(with the weekly parshah):
The Alter Rebbe did not mean that one must live with it only at the time of the reading of the Torah and at the time of the service of prayer or the blessings of Shema or the study of the book of Tanya and the study of Chassidus,
and the like,
but rather one must
(and one has the power)
live with it every day of the days of the week and in all parts of the day,
even when one is occupied with mundane matters.
And in our matter:
Since in this time a Jew must "live" with the matter of "And it was on the eighth day",
"that day he took ten crowns",
and he has the power for this by virtue of his superiorities –
it is understood that not only does his soul have the potential to "live" with it,
and not only when he is occupied with lofty matters,
but he has the potential that he should live with it entirely,
i.e., that all his matters,
also his body and physical matters,
should then "live" with that which regarding them is "he took ten crowns"!
And particularly according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov49 on "When you see the donkey of your enemy etc., you shall surely help him raise it"50,
"When you see the donkey –
when you look with good contemplation at your material substance which is the body,
you will see –
your enemy –
that it is an enemy to the soul which yearns for G‑dliness and spirituality etc.,
and perhaps it will arise in your heart –
and you will refrain from helping it –
that it can fulfill its mission,
for if you begin with afflictions to break the materiality,
behold, not in this way will the light of Torah dwell,
but rather –
you shall surely help him raise it –
to refine the body and purify it and not to break it with afflictions".
And in our matter:
When one lives with the matter of "he took ten crowns" –
it must be in a manner that not only is the soul of a Jew "he took ten crowns",
but also his material body
(the "donkey" within him)
is "he took ten crowns"!
And this can also be connected with today's aforementioned lesson of the Rambam
(at its end)
regarding the honor of a Sefer Torah
(which is a "faithful witness" regarding the Jewish people),
where he speaks about the conduct that must be with a Sefer Torah when one is riding on a donkey:
"If one travels from place to place and a Sefer Torah is with him, he should not place the Sefer Torah inside a sack and put it on the back of the donkey and ride upon it",
but rather "he places it in his bosom opposite his heart and he rides on the animal and goes".
And in the inner aspect of the matters:
"donkey" refers to the materiality of his body
(according to the aforementioned teaching of the Baal Shem Tov),
that at the beginning of the service, the "donkey"
(the materiality of the body)
is "your enemy",
"for it is an enemy to the soul, etc." Therefore there are limitations as to how one must conduct himself with the "donkey".
But on the other hand,
the plain meaning is not that one must negate the "donkey" and break it through afflictions,
but rather –
"you shall surely help him raise it up",
"this 'help' is an expression of assistance"51,
"to refine the body and purify it",
until also the materiality of the body becomes "one that bore ten crowns"!
And through this, not only will nothing be lacking in his service,
but on the contrary:
the "donkey"
(the materiality of the body)
will help him in his service so that he can accomplish more than he would have accomplished without it.
As this is in the simple understanding of the matter:
When there is the "you shall surely help him raise it up" with a literal donkey,
then the donkey helps him out,
it helps him carry his load and leads him to his destination.
As this comes out in the aforementioned law in the Rambam:
Through the fact that he conducts himself in a manner befitting the honor of a Torah scroll
("one should not place a Torah scroll in a sack and put it on the donkey and ride upon it" but rather "he places it in his bosom opposite his heart and rides on the animal and goes"),
the "donkey" further helps him by carrying the Torah scroll and leads him with the Torah scroll to his destination.
And in spiritual service:
Through the fact that there is the "you shall surely help him raise it up" with the "donkey" of the materiality of the body,
the "donkey" helps him in his study of Torah –
it becomes a "donkey52 for bearing" the Torah53,
as it is written54 "Issachar is a strong-boned donkey, etc.",
whose meaning is Torah55.
And this is in greater detail within Torah itself –
as explained in many places56 that the acronym of Peshat, Remez, Derush
(in Torah)
is "Pardes"
(corresponding to the aspect of "donkey" in Torah),
and through his study of Torah
(in Peshat, Remez, and Derush)
he rectifies the aspect of "Pardes",
so that there should not be a state of separation,
and afterwards he also adds the study of Sod,
so that he has all the parts of Torah
(Pardes).
And in practical terms –
one sees from all the above the greatness of the elevation of this day in connection with the matter of the Redemption:
It is the holy Shabbat,
and the holy Shabbat when we bless the new month,
and the holy Shabbat when we bless the month of Nissan
(which includes all the days of the month,
also the fifteenth of it),
regarding which "in Nissan they were redeemed and in Nissan they are destined to be redeemed",
"as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show him wonders",
and the same determination as it was "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt",
and the Shabbat of Parshat Shemini,
"on that day he bore ten crowns".
And simply –
that after this Shabbat Mevarchim, the Redemption should come,
when then automatically we will celebrate Rosh Chodesh Nissan and all the more so Shabbat HaGadol and all the more so the festival of Pesach –
in our holy land,
in Jerusalem, our holy city,
on the Temple Mount,
and there itself –
in the "Sanctuary, Hashem, which Your hands established"57,
And with joy and a glad heart,
"with our young and with our old, etc., with our sons and with our daughters"58,
"a great company shall return here"59.
In the determination of Rosh Chodesh Nissan within the days of the week and in the determination of Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan within the days of the month –
there are changes from year to year.
And the explanation:
The days of the month are dependent on the course of the moon and the days of the week are dependent on the course of the sun
(and there was *59 evening and there was morning, one day, etc.).
From this it is understood,
that in the days of the month
(which are dependent on the course of the moon)
there are changes from year to year in their determination within the days of the week
(which are dependent on the course of the sun).
And likewise in the days of the week there are changes from year to year in their determination within the days of the month.
And likewise it is understood regarding these present days:
The day of Rosh Chodesh Nissan
(and likewise the fifteenth of Nissan, etc.)
is determined according to the count of the days of the month which are dependent on the course of the moon,
and therefore Rosh Chodesh Nissan in each and every year is the same day in the month –
the first day of the month,
i.e., the first day of the moon's course anew
(in this month).
But regarding its determination within the days of the week –
there are changes from year to year.
Conversely, regarding Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan:
The determination of Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan is determined according to the count of the days of the week
(which are dependent on the course of the sun),
and therefore it is always the same day in the week –
the day of Shabbat,
the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh Nissan. But regarding its determination within the days of the month, there are changes from year to year.
And in the determination of the specific year of Rosh Chodesh Nissan in the days of the week, the determination of Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan in the days of the month in that year is dependent. It is always at the end of the month of Adar
(the second),
but in this itself it can be in various ways.
And in the determination of this year:
Rosh Chodesh Nissan will be on Thursday of the week
(as it was "like the days of your exodus from Egypt",
as discussed above).
And based on this it is understood that Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan this year is on the 25th of Adar Sheni
(because in Adar Sheni there are always 29 days).
And just as from every thing,
there must also be from this a lesson in the service of Hashem. And since the specific determination of Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan and Rosh Chodesh Nissan relates to several matters in physical life,
even of a small child –
there must be from this a lesson regarding physical life that is understood simply by all Jews,
even for a small child,
a young boy or a young girl.
The explanation:
In order to know the content of the 25th of Adar one must look into the Torah,
and this becomes Torat Chaim,
a lesson in life for every Jew.
It is stated in the Gemara
(in the Torah)
60 that according to Rabbi Yehoshua, "in Nissan the world was created". According to this, it follows that the first day of Maaseh Bereishit
(the day the world was created)
according to him was on the 25th of Adar61. Just as according to Rabbi Eliezer who holds that "in Tishrei the world was created"62,
the first day of creation was on the 25th of Elul63
[and that which the expression is "in Tishrei the world was created" refers to the day of the creation of man (on the sixth day of Maaseh Bereishit)*63.
And similarly according to Rabbi Yehoshua, the day of the creation of man was on Rosh Chodesh Nissan64].
And in addition to that "these and those are the words of the living God"65,
the practical halacha also remains according to both opinions:
The halacha is like Rabbi Eliezer
(that "in Tishrei the world was created")
regarding years,
that Rosh Hashanah is on the first of Tishrei66,
"According to whom do we pray nowadays 'this day is the beginning of Your works, a remembrance of the first day'? According to whom? Like Rabbi Eliezer"67. And the halacha is like Rabbi Yehoshua
(that "in Nissan the world was created")
regarding the counting of tekufot68
(that tekufot are counted from Nissan of Tohu69),
which relates to the question of rains
("and give dew and rain" and "and give blessing"),
matters that pertain to the body and physicality of the world.
The question arises:
How is it possible to say that the practical halacha is like both opinions –
when this concerns a difference in reality,
whether the world was created in Tishrei or in Nissan –
so how can one say that both are correct?!
It could be understood if they had not ruled the halacha according to both opinions –
one could explain that "these and those are the words of the living God" and one opinion speaks from the aspect of spiritual matters;
וואלט מען געקענט מסביר זיין אז "אלו ואלו דברי אלקים חיים" און איין דיעה רעדט מצד רוחניות הענינים;
but they do rule the practical halacha according to both opinions
(in certain matters according to one opinion and in other matters according to the second opinion),
and in matters that relate to practical action and the physicality of the world –
so how can one say that regarding a practical conduct for the same Jew,
in the same year –
he must conduct himself in certain matters according to the opinion that the world was created in Tishrei and in other matters according to the opinion that the world was created in Nissan?!
The explanation of this is –
according to what is explained in several places70 that both opinions are true regarding action
(not only in spiritual matters):
In Nissan it arose in thought to create the world71,
and the actual creation
(through the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He –
the ten utterances)
was in Tishrei71. And just as the order is that thought precedes speech,
so too in the creation of the world, first it arose in thought to create the world on the 25th of Adar
(and the creation of man in thought was –
on Rosh Chodesh Nissan),
and afterwards this came out in speech and action –
in Tishrei,
so that on the 25th of Elul the world was actually created
(and the actual creation of man –
on the first of Tishrei).
And since both opinions are true regarding actuality –
therefore the halachah can be according to both opinions:
Regarding years
(and the saying "This day is the beginning of Your works")
the halachah is like Rabbi Eliezer that the world was created in Tishrei,
because of the fact that then the creation was in actuality
(in speech).
And regarding seasons and the prayer for rain the halachah is like Rabbi Yehoshua that the world was created in Nissan in thought,
but it is not a mere thought that has no connection to speech and actuality,
rather a thought that is connected to speech and deed,
and which afterwards comes down
(in the month of Tishrei)
in speech and deed
(and the proof,
that this is how it was in actuality) –
therefore one can rule a halachah in actuality
(regarding the prayer for rain –
which pertains to the body and physicality of the world)
according to the
(creation of the world in)
thought.
Based on the above, the superiority of this day –
the 25th of Adar – is understood:
Today is the beginning and New Year of the entire creation –
when the entire world was created in thought!
And a thought that is connected and which afterwards comes down into speech and actual deed
(in Tishrei),
meaning that then all matters of the creation of the world that afterwards emerged in actuality in Tishrei arose in thought.
And on the contrary –
even a small child understands that thought precedes and has an advantage over speech,
consequently it turns out that the 25th of Adar has the advantage
(even over the 25th of Elul)
that then the entire world stands in thought,
which is higher than speech and actual deed,
and according to how it stands in thought –
it afterwards emerges in actual deed.
And furthermore –
from the thought itself emerges a halachah in actual deed,
in connection with the physicality of the world!
Based on this, the lesson from this in the service of man is understood –
standing on this auspicious day of the 25th of Adar:
The purpose of the creation of the world is "In the beginning –
for the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel"72. From this it is understood,
that just as the 25th of Adar is the day when the entire world was created in thought,
"for the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel",
and according to this the entire world was afterwards created in actuality –
so too must this be reflected in the service of man,
that on this day one must and has the power to "create" a new world,
a new order,
in the service of man,
i.e., a day when one has the ability to accept good resolutions in all matters connected with
(In the beginning for the sake of)
Torah and Israel,
according to which resolutions all matters will be conducted throughout the entire year
(until the creation of the world on the 25th of Adar of the following year),
And not only good resolutions regarding matters of actual deed,
but also regarding matters of thought
(which precedes and is higher than deed),
And furthermore –
in a manner that the thought then affects all his matters of deed throughout the entire year and in the entire creation,
that they emerge and are conducted always according to how it was resolved by him in thought on the 25th of Adar.
From this is understood the additional advantage and instruction that comes to this day of Shabbat and Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan due to its placement in this year –
on the 25th of Adar:
This day has within it the advantage that it is Shabbat,
"a Shabbat of complete rest"73,
from which it is understood that the conduct on this day is not like on an ordinary day,
rather it pertains to all the days of the week following Shabbat. "Shmini, all the days are blessed from it"74.
Additionally, it has the advantage that it is
(not merely a Shabbat, but rather)
a Shabbat Mevarchim of an entire month,
i.e., that the conduct on this day pertains to an entire month,
and furthermore –
a month like the month of Nissan,
as discussed above75 at length the matter of this.
When Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan also occurs on the 25th of Adar
(as in this year),
on which the world was created in thought,
there comes to it an incomparable advantage –
that the conduct on this day pertains to the entire year!
From this it is understood that one must utilize such an auspicious day to accept good resolutions
(in matters of deed and matters of thought)
for the actual conduct throughout the entire year. And especially since in this year the 25th of Adar is also a day of Shabbat
(unlike other years when the 25th of Adar occurs on weekdays),
when "all your work is done" and all matters are with pleasure,
with all the advantages of Shabbat. And additionally this is also Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan,
as discussed above the advantage of this.
And there is no need to elaborate in explaining the instruction from this regarding actuality,
because this is understood and self-evident.
We will only mention here the matters that are time-bound:
In addition to the matters and virtues mentioned above regarding this Shabbos
(being Shabbos Mevarchim Nissan and the 25th of Adar, etc.) –
there also comes the matter that Shabbos Mevarchim Nissan always occurs in the month of Adar
(and in this year –
on the 25th of Adar),
meaning that this Shabbos connects the two months of Adar and Nissan.
As has been discussed many times, Shabbos Mevarchim connects two months:
It is always the last Shabbos of the past month,
and it itself blesses the coming month.
And particularly regarding the two months of Adar and Nissan,
and the two festivals of Purim and Pesach,
which have a special connection between them –
that “one redemption is joined to the other redemption”
(the redemption of Purim to the redemption of Pesach) 76.
That is, this Shabbos
(which connects both months)
connects the two redemptions of Purim and Pesach,
as will be explained.
The explanation of this matter:
Being Shabbos Mevarchim Nissan,
which includes the festival of Pesach,
the time of our freedom –
this Shabbos has a special connection with all matters of Pesach. And together with this:
Being also the conclusion
(the last Shabbos)
of the month of Adar Sheni,
whose content is the festival of Purim,
which reveals that the entire month of Adar is “the month which was turned for them” 77 and “my mazal is strong” 78 –
this Shabbos also has a connection with the service of Purim
(which influences the entire month,
as above),
which in general is the matter of “they fulfilled what they had already accepted” at the giving of the Torah 79,
the permanence and strength of all matters of Torah and mitzvos.
Thus we derive the lesson from the fact that this is Shabbos Mevarchim Nissan and the last Shabbos of the month of Adar –
that good resolutions must be specifically in matters that are time-bound:
a) Operation Pesach,
and b) the service connected with Purim and the month of Adar,
“the month which was turned for them” and “my mazal is strong” –
the service of “they fulfilled what they had already accepted” at the giving of the Torah.
And furthermore:
In addition to having the strength for the service of each matter individually
(the month of Adar and Purim individually, and the month of Nissan and Pesach individually) –
each one also adds to the other –
as is emphasized by this Shabbos
(the last of the month of Adar which blesses the month of Nissan)
which connects them both together.
And the power of each of them is in the matter of redemption –
“one redemption is joined to the other redemption”
(the redemption of Purim to the redemption of Pesach) –
which this Shabbos connects both redemptions
(of Purim and of Pesach).
And particularly since this Shabbos, in several details, already has a special connection with the matter of redemption –
as discussed above 75 at length.
And the explanation:
From the fact that it is said that one must fulfill the matter of “one redemption is joined to the other redemption”,
it is understood that the two redemptions have a connection and effect, one upon the other.
That is, even though they are redemptions that are different from each other,
and furthermore –
opposite to each other 80:
The redemption of Purim was not a complete redemption,
for we are still servants of Achashverosh 81,
exactly the opposite of the redemption of Pesach which was a complete redemption –
nevertheless, it is understood,
that each one has a matter that it contributes to the other.
And the explanation:
The preparation of the redemption of Purim and the service of “they fulfilled what they had already accepted” effects an elevation in the redemption of Pesach that follows afterward.
And conversely, on the other side:
The redemption of Pesach of the previous year effects the redemption of Purim –
for following Pesach comes the time of the giving of our Torah,
at which time the Torah was received,
and this provides the possibility that in the days of Purim that follow afterward, there can be “they fulfilled what they had already accepted”.
And likewise, there is also an effect of the redemption of Pesach on the redemption of Purim and of the redemption of Purim on the redemption of Pesach –
in the matter of the redemption itself:
It has been discussed many times *81 from the Maharal 82 that the redemption of Pesach
(the Exodus from Egypt)
established that the matter of servitude could no longer apply to Jews. This is also expressed in halachah –
that after the giving of the Torah
(which was the conclusion and completion of “when you take the people out of Egypt” 83)
the Jews became “they are My servants” 84,
“and not servants to servants” 85,
at that time it was established that Jews could no longer be servants to human beings.
From this it is understood that the redemption of Pesach also affects the redemption of Purim
(which came after it) –
that even though the redemption was in a manner of "we are still servants of Achashverosh",
nevertheless, in the truth of the matter,
regarding matters of Judaism and Torah and mitzvos,
it is not possible that Jews should be servants to Achashverosh. And that which is said "we are still servants of Achashverosh" is only regarding "the law of the kingdom is law"86,
physical matters,
but not regarding spiritual matters87.
It is known the proclamation of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe88,
that only the body went into exile but the soul never went into exile,
and no one has mastery over it.
That is, that "the law of the kingdom is law" is only regarding physical matters,
but regarding spiritual matters and Torah and mitzvos, there is no concept of servitude,
because the soul from the outset never went into exile. And this my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, proclaimed before he himself went into exile within exile,
and he later ordered it to be printed,
thus it became a matter for all generations *88
[as it is stated in the preceding portion –
"There is no 'to' except to spur Me and for generations"89,
as discussed above90]!
And the matter –
that Jews can no longer be servants in exile
(in matters of the soul) –
was brought about through the redemption from Egypt
(the festival of Pesach),
for then the general concept of redemption was renewed for all times,
also in the time of the redemption of Purim and beyond,
until the end of all times,
that Jews can no longer be servants to servants in exile.
And this is one of the reasons why we mention the Exodus from Egypt in the days of Mashiach91,
because through the Exodus from Egypt the opening of the channel of the concept of redemption was renewed92,
also of the future redemption92.
On the other hand, however, there is an advantage in the redemption of Purim over
(and that which it adds to)
the redemption of Pesach:
Our Sages, of blessed memory, say93 that "all the festivals
(including the festival of Pesach,
which is one of the three pilgrimage festivals)
are destined to be nullified in the future, but the days of Purim will never be nullified"
(as the matter is explained in books of ethics and homiletics94 and in Chassidus95),
and as the ruling of the Rambam96 that "the days of Purim will not be nullified, as it is said97 'and these days of Purim shall not pass from among the Jews, and their memory shall not cease from their seed.'"
And from this it is understood,
that the redemption of Purim has in it an advantage over all other festivals,
including the redemption from Egypt which will be nullified in the future,
therefore all festivals will be nullified in the future except for the days of Purim.
That is, that even in the future the redemption of Purim will be a primary matter,
because it adds even regarding the future redemption. From this it is understood a fortiori that the redemption of Purim adds an addition to the redemption of Pesach.
And even though we mention the Exodus from Egypt in the days of Mashiach, it is stated that this will be only in a secondary manner98,
that is, that then the main thing will be the future redemption,
and only in a secondary manner will the Exodus from Egypt be mentioned.
But as a primary matter, the festival of Pesach will be nullified in the future,
but Purim will be a primary matter also in the future,
therefore it will not be nullified then.
Based on all the above, the greatness of the elevation of this day is understood –
and especially regarding the matter of redemption –
being Shabbat Mevarchim Nissan,
and in the same arrangement as "like the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt",
and the last Shabbat in the month of Adar,
and in this itself –
the 25th of Adar,
and also Shabbat Parshat Shemini,
when in every Jew there is the "taking of the ten crowns",
he himself takes
(because it belongs to him entirely)
the "ten crowns",
and he takes them from their source above,
until from Essence and Being,
the source of all blessings.
And based on this, one can explain the connection of this with "And it was on the eighth day",
"the eighth day of the inauguration is Rosh Chodesh Nissan when the Mishkan was erected on that day" *98,
for on that day "it took ten crowns":
The achievement of the eighth day
(of the inauguration)
was –
that then the Divine Presence descended among Israel.
"All seven days of the inauguration that Moshe erected the Mishkan and served in it and dismantled it each day, the Divine Presence did not rest upon it, and Israel were ashamed and said to Moshe,
Moshe our teacher, all the toil we toiled so that the Divine Presence should rest among us and we should know that the sin of the Golden Calf is atoned for us"99. The Jews said –
that they have the Mishkan,
they have the anointing oil,
they have Moshe and Aharon,
they have all the matters –
but "we desire to see our King"100.
And therefore Moshe said to the Jewish people: "This is the thing that Hashem commanded; do it, and the glory of Hashem will appear to you"101.
"Aharon my brother is more worthy and important than I, that through his offerings and his service the Divine Presence will rest upon you, and you will know that the Omnipresent has chosen him"99.
And so it was –
for on the eighth day Aharon offered the offerings and performed the actions that Moshe had told him,
and afterwards "Moshe101 and Aharon went into the Tent of Meeting, and came out and blessed the people",
and then the Divine Presence descended upon Israel –
"and the glory of Hashem appeared to all the people,
and fire came forth from before Hashem and consumed upon the altar, etc."
and when the Jewish people saw this –
"and all the people saw, and they sang, and fell on their faces",
"and they sang" –
"and they praised"
(according to Targum Onkelos),
or "and they gave thanks"
(according to the commentary of the Baal HaTurim).
From this we have,
incidentally,
a lesson in the greatness of the matter of love of Israel:
The difference between Moshe and Aharon is –
that Moshe Rabbeinu's essence is Torah, and also the Torah that is in Aharon the Kohen –
"The Torah of truth was in his mouth"102 –
comes through Moshe Rabbeinu),
and Aharon's essence is kindness and love of Israel.
As it is written103: "Kindness and truth have met...
Kindness is Aharon and truth is Moshe",
and in the manner of "love truth and peace"104, kindness
(and peace)
is the matter of love of Israel,
and truth is the matter of the Torah of truth.
And as we see at the passing of Aharon,
that specifically at the time of his passing "the entire house of Israel wept for Aharon, etc.",
"the men and the women,
because Aharon pursued peace and instilled love between quarreling parties and between a man and his wife"104*.
And here the Torah relates,
and not merely as a story,
but Moshe says it as a definitive ruling –
that "Aharon my brother is more worthy and important than I, that through his offerings and his service the Divine Presence will rest upon you, and you will know that the Omnipresent has chosen him":
During the seven days of inauguration the resting of the Divine Presence was not revealed –
because then the service was performed by Moshe Rabbeinu,
but regarding Aharon and his sons it was only training and inauguration;
משא"כ ביי אהרן ובניו איז נאר געווען חינוך ומילואים;
only on the eighth day,
when Aharon also performed the service –
whose essence is love of Israel,
"the entire house of Israel" –
did the resting of the Divine Presence become revealed in Israel,
"and the glory of Hashem appeared to all the people, etc., and all the people saw, and they sang, and fell on their faces".
And this was an eternal action that revealed the resting of the Divine Presence below in all times,
and that all Jewish people
("all the people")
in all generations after this should have the power to see the resting of the Divine Presence below,
"and they sang and fell on their faces",
until also as it will be in ultimate perfection in the true and complete redemption,
and also for the nations of the world –
as it is written105: "and the glory of Hashem shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see, etc.",
and as it is written106: "to enter into the clefts of the rocks and into the crevices of the crags, from before the terror of Hashem and the splendor of His majesty, etc.",
and the other two verses that he brings on this in Tanya107 as proof for the refinement of the darkness of the nations in the future.
And it can be said that these verses that he brings there in Tanya correspond to the refinement and transformation of the three klipot –
the klipah of nogah and the completely impure klipot107* –
darkness is transformed into light and bitterness into sweetness108
[as will be explained on another occasion].
And simply:
May the Almighty take out every Jew and all Jews from exile,
and we will all dance together with Mashiach Tzidkeinu,
"a great congregation",
to our holy land,
and there we will celebrate the festival of Pesach,
"and we will eat109 there from the feast offerings and from the Passover offerings",
or "from the Passover offerings and from the feast offerings",
and before this –
the offering of the Passover sacrifice,
which "we will do and offer before You, etc., according to the commandment of Your will"110 –
already the offering
("and we will offer")
of the first sacrifice,
the Passover sacrifice,
will be "according to the commandment of Your will".
And the revelation of G‑dliness in the future will also affect the entire world, upon all the nations of the world –
"and the kingdom shall be Hashem's"111,
And speedily in our days, literally.
Maamar (in the form of a sicha)
beginning "HaChodesh HaZeh Lachem, etc."
It is also customary to study a matter in Rashi of our parshah,
a matter in the notes of my father on the Zohar, and a matter in today's lesson of Rambam.
Regarding Rashi –
the proposal112 was accepted,
and yasher koach to them,
that one should himself raise a perplexing Rashi,
and various questions on Rashi's commentaries were printed in the booklets,
and presumably this will stimulate others to also endeavor to answer the questions.
Since it is also connected with a farbrengen –
we will dwell on two of the matters in Rashi that were raised in the booklets.
At the beginning of the portion regarding permitted and forbidden foods, on the verse
(Chapter 11, verse 1)
"And Hashem spoke to Moses and to Aaron",
Rashi explains:
"To Moses He said that he should speak to Aaron".
On this it was asked113:
Two portions earlier
(in Parshat Vayikra114)
Rashi had already explained "Rabbi Yehoshua says: Thirteen utterances were said in the Torah to Moses and to Aaron, and corresponding to them thirteen limitations were said, to teach you that they were not said to Aaron, but to Moses that he should say to Aaron" –
so why does Rashi need to explain this again in this verse in our portion?
It was desired to answer,
that Rashi explains this as an introduction to his commentary after this:
"To say to them –
He said that he should say to Elazar and to Itamar etc.'",
so first it says "To Moses He said that he should speak to Aaron" and subsequently –
"He said that he should say to Elazar and to Itamar".
But this does not answer why Rashi repeats here what he explained in Parshat Vayikra –
he could have written briefly that this explanation "I wrote above"
[as Rashi writes in several places regarding a matter he already explained earlier].
And afterwards write his commentary on "To say to them".
And as will be explained below,
how this is understandable according to the simple meaning for a child of five studying Scripture.
Another matter in Rashi on which a question was raised:
Further in the portion regarding the laws of kashrut,
Rashi comments on the verse
(in Chapter 11, verse 21)
"But this you may eat from all the winged swarming things that walk on four, which have legs above its feet with which to hop on the earth",
and explains:
"Above its feet –
near its neck it has like two legs besides its four legs,
and when it wants to fly and jump from the ground it strengthens itself with those two legs and takes flight,
and there are many of them like those called 'langosta',
but we are not expert in them because four signs of purity were stated regarding them,
four legs and four wings and the ankle-joints, these are the legs written here, and its wings cover most of it,
and all these signs are found among those that are in our regions,
but there are some whose head is long and some that have no tail, and its name must be 'grasshopper',
and in this we do not know how to distinguish between them".
It was asked115:
Rashi is not a Shulchan Aruch that needs to explain in detail what the winged swarming thing looks like,
and what it is called in the vernacular,
and the details of whether one may eat it or not;
און די פרטים צי מ'מעג דאס עסן אדער ניט;
the purpose of Rashi is the simple meaning of Scripture –
so what relevance do all these details have to understanding the simple meaning of Scripture,
the explanation and example in the vernacular of the winged swarming thing and the lengthy details of the signs and that "we are not expert in them etc."?!
And as will be explained below.
Regarding the notes on the Zohar of our portion –
the general question is known:
What is the lesson from this in the service of Hashem,
which he does not explain in the note,
And as will be explained below.
Today's lesson of Rambam is at the end of the Laws of a Torah Scroll
(as discussed earlier (section 6)).
There the Rambam writes
(as discussed above)
the laws of honoring a Torah Scroll. And among these laws he writes,
that "Anyone who sits before a Torah Scroll shall sit with gravity, with awe and fear,
for it is the faithful witness for all who come into the world, as it is said, 'And it shall be there with you as a witness'".
It must be understood:
Also regarding tefillin we find116 that they are a "sign" and testimony
(as it is said117 "And it shall be for you as a sign on your arm"),
therefore "Shabbatot and Yomim Tovim are not the time for tefillin etc. because they themselves are a sign between the Holy One, blessed be He and Israel"118,
and tefillin are also a general sign.
The question arises:
According to this reason in the Rambam that one must conduct oneself with "gravity, with awe and fear" because "it is the faithful witness etc." –
should the Rambam have also written regarding tefillin that there must be a special relationship to them because they too are a sign and testimony?
It is true that in tefillin there are only a few portions of the Torah,
unlike in a Sefer Torah where there are all the portions of the Torah –
this is only a reason why there must be more awe in relation to a Sefer Torah than in relation to tefillin,
but tefillin are nevertheless a sign and testimony,
the Rambam should have written that regarding tefillin one must conduct himself with awe,
indeed less than for a Sefer Torah,
but still with awe? Granted, regarding Shabbat –
there is no question,
because there the law is that there must be honor of Shabbat
(as the Rambam writes<sup>118</sup>);
(ווי דער רמב"ם שרייבט *118);
unlike regarding tefillin, the Rambam does not write that there must be a special relationship to them.
Another matter that must be understood in this chapter of the Rambam:
In this chapter
(beginning of chapter 10)
he makes a summary of his laws and lists all the things that invalidate a Sefer Torah:
"You have learned that there are twenty things each of which invalidates a Sefer Torah etc.,
and these are they etc." and he lists numerically twenty things.
The commentators ask119:
Why does the Rambam not count among the twenty invalidations that which he writes in chapter 1 of the Laws of Tefillin120,
that if one wrote "part of the Name on a line and part of it suspended –
it is invalid"?
And they answer, that...
"without doubt he [the Rambam] forgot"!
It is self-understood that one cannot answer like that! And especially since the Rambam wrote this law in the same laws
(Tefillin, Mezuzah, and Sefer Torah) –
now how is it possible that the Rambam should forget what he himself wrote a few chapters earlier at the beginning of these very laws while he is engaged in these same laws?!
And especially since this is at the beginning of the laws and the end of the laws –
and by nature even an ordinary person remembers more the beginning and end of a matter than that which is in between,
all the more so when it concerns the Rambam!
And as will be explained below in my humble opinion.
May it be His will that the study and analysis of these laws among the rest of the laws should further strengthen and add to the study of the daily chapters in the Rambam's book every single day,
both in one's own study,
and in influencing others that they should study it,
which itself gives strength and enjoyment to one's own study. And especially since in order to influence another, he must himself show a living example.
And it is understood,
that the more one studies the Rambam's book –
one can always increase in the quality of study,
as is the case in the study of all matters of Torah,
for "it is longer than the earth and broader than the sea"121.
The great benefit of studying fixed daily portions of Rambam has already been discussed many times122,
that through all Jews studying together the same subject in the Torah of Hashem,
one Torah,
which "the entire Torah was given to make peace in the world"123 –
they unite.
And especially when studying together the same subject in the halachic part of the Torah
(the subject of the Rambam's book),
through which the matter of unity and peace is particularly actualized through the study of Torah
(which "the entire Torah was given to make peace in the world")
more than through the part of pilpul and debate in the Torah,
also in the simple sense:
When studying together pilpul and debate in the Torah,
where there are differences of opinion,
it can happen
(because their opinions are not equal)
that one student adopts the reasoning of the first Tanna and the other adopts the reasoning of the latter Tanna.
However, when both study a subject in halacha,
like the laws in the Rambam's book,
where there are no differences of opinion,
rather "all in clear language and a concise way etc. without question or resolution,
not one saying thus and another saying thus, but clear things etc."
(as the Rambam writes in his introduction to the Book of the Hand) –
then there is peace and unity among those who study the halacha
(and there can only be differences of opinion regarding the explanation of the matter,
but not in the essence of the matter).
And in addition to this, the study of Rambam has the advantage –
that through it one fulfills the matter of studying all the laws of the Torah124,
as the Rambam writes in his introduction:
"This compilation gathers the entire Oral Torah etc.,
a person first reads the Written Torah and then reads this and knows from it the entire Oral Torah."
When one explains
(to oneself and another)
the above-mentioned virtues in the study of the Rambam's book –
this will certainly strengthen and increase the study of the Rambam's book.
May it be His will that from this study of the Rambam one should come to "a new Torah will go forth from Me"125,
and the study of the Torah of Mashiach,
which is connected to "And it was on the eighth day",
the lyre of the days of Mashiach which is a lyre of eight strings126,
in the true and complete redemption speedily in our days, literally.
We will now,
as usual,
invite all those who have given drink for various farbrengens and gatherings that will take place in the coming days in connection with the dissemination of Torah and particularly the dissemination of the inner dimension of Torah,
the dissemination of the wellsprings outward –
that they should come and take the drink,
and distribute a portion of it here,
in order to include those assembled here in their gatherings,
and the remainder –
distribute at their gatherings,
and then announce about the gatherings –
where and when and how:
The gathering
(Melaveh Malkah)
connected with Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah;
פארבונדן מיט ישיבת תומכי תמימים;
and the gathering connected with the "tankists",
whose purpose is the dissemination of Torah,
and the dissemination of the wellsprings outward,
and first and foremost –
practical mitzvos,
and at this time –
the mitzvos connected with Pesach.
And through the very resolution in this,
one will immediately receive the reward127 –
that the redemption will come and we will fulfill the practical mitzvos in the manner of "as the commandment of Your will" in our holy land,
"a land which Hashem your G-d cares for; the eyes of Hashem your G-d are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"128.
And simply –
practical halachah,
without hints and homilies and secrets –
may the redemption come simply through our righteous Mashiach,
speedily in our days, literally, and in our actual time, literally.

The explanation in Rashi –
on the verse "to Moshe and to Aharon,
to Moshe He said that he should say to Aharon". With an introduction:
It is a well-known thing,
and also understood by a child of five years of age studying Scripture,
that although there is a general rule in a certain manner,
nevertheless, when there is in one place a special teaching of a multiplicity and the like,
it comes to teach that this place is an exception. So too in our matter:
Although Rashi explained in Parshat Vayikra that "thirteen communications were said in the Torah to Moshe and to Aharon, and corresponding to them thirteen limitations were said, to teach you that they were not said to Aharon, but to Moshe that he should say to Aharon",
one could, however, possibly say here that this case is an exception and here the Omnipresent spoke with Moshe and with Aharon together
(and not "to Moshe that he should say to Aharon"):
In this verse it does not say "And Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying" as it says in all places,
but rather "saying to them". One could, based on this, say,
that the multiplicity in the verse
("saying to them")
comes to teach that this case is an exception and here the Omnipresent spoke with both of them together –
"saying to them"129:
When it says "And Hashem spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying" –
then the rule applies that "they were not said to Aharon, but to Moshe that he should say to Aharon":
But when there is a multiplicity
(which is not found in other places)
"And Hashem spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying to them",
one could say that the verse thereby emphasizes that the Omnipresent spoke "to them",
to Moshe and to Aharon together.
[And although Rashi explains "saying to them,
He said that he should say to Elazar and to Itamar" –
this is after the conclusion,
but before this one could say that "saying to them" comes to teach that the Omnipresent spoke to Moshe and Aharon together].
And furthermore:
In the verse after this it does not say "Speak to the children of Israel"
(singular form)
as it says in all places,
which refers to Moshe alone. Rather "Speak to the children of Israel" in the plural form130. One could say that the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, here was to Moshe and to Aharon together
(and not "to Moshe He said that he should say to Aharon").
Therefore, there is no question why Rashi explains here "to Moshe He said that he should say to Aharon" even though he already gave the rule earlier in parshas Vayikra –
Because,
Rashi cannot rely here on what he explained in parshas Vayikra,
For in these verses there is a special multiplicity that could make the verse an exception.
And the explanation of this is:
That the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He was to Moshe alone and not also to Aharon
(Rather "to Moshe He said that he should say to Aharon") –
Is because this was the matter, role, and level of Moshe Rabbeinu,
In contrast, Aharon and the rest of the Jewish people had a different role and stood on a different level
(Except for an exceptional case).
From this it is understood that in order to say that the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He in this case was to Moshe and to Aharon together,
Unlike in all other cases where "to Moshe He said that he should say to Aharon" –
It is reasonable to say that in this parshah here,
More than in the rest of the entire Torah,
Aharon is specially distinguished
(From the rest of the Jewish people)
In that he stands on the level of Moshe Rabbeinu,
And therefore it is fitting that the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He should be to Moshe and to Aharon together.
But we do not find in the verses that Aharon is so distinguished that he stands on the level of Moshe Rabbeinu. Consequently, it is not reasonable that in this case the speech of Hashem was to Moshe and to Aharon together,
Unlike in all other cases,
Rather, also here it is "to Moshe He said that he should say to Aharon".
Furthermore –
It is even necessary to say so from Rashi on the subsequent verse:
After it says "And Hashem spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying to them"
(To Elazar and to Isamar),
The verse continues:
"Speak to the children of Israel". Rashi explains:
"He made them all equal to be messengers in this speech because they were equal in silence and accepted the decree of the Omnipresent with love".
That is, since Aharon and Elazar and Isamar "were equal in silence etc."
(Regarding the decree about Nadav and Avihu),
As it says earlier 131 "And Aharon was silent",
Therefore "He made them all equal to be messengers in this speech".
That is, that here it is explicitly emphasized how Aharon is not equal to the level of Moshe,
For regarding Moshe there was not the matter of "and he was silent"
(And on the contrary –
If yes,
Then here the superiority of Aharon over Moshe in the matter of silence is emphasized.
And so too the superiority of Aharon is emphasized in what is stated before –
"And Moshe heard and it was good in his eyes" 132]),
Rather, how Aharon is equal to his sons Elazar and Isamar who "were equal in silence" and therefore "He made them all equal to be messengers in this speech",
Even though generally only Moshe transmits the words of the Holy One, blessed be He to the Jewish people.
And therefore it is reasonable to say,
Since in this matter it is emphasized how Aharon is equal to Elazar and Isamar
("Were equal in silence")
And not with Moshe –
So too regarding the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He,
That in this Aharon was equal
(Not with Moshe, rather)
With Elazar and Isamar,
That the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He was only to Moshe and "to Moshe He said that he should say to Aharon",
"Saying to them,
He said that he should say to Elazar and to Isamar",
And the "Speak to the children of Israel –
He made them all equal to be messengers in this speech etc."
And one could elaborate on all this,
Give to the wise and he will become wiser still 133.
The explanation of the second Rashi –
On the verse "from above his feet":
That which Rashi in his commentary on the Torah brings in many places an explanation and example in the vernacular,
As he writes here "and there are many of them like those that call 'langousta'" –
Is in accordance with that which his matter is to explain the subject in the Chumash simply for a five-year-old studying Scripture:
Rashi brings a term or an example in the vernacular
(From the language that the five-year-old understands in his daily life) –
In order to make the thing more vivid for the five-year-old studying Scripture,
Who then understands the simple meaning of Scripture better,
As one sees tangibly that when one has a living thing before one's eyes, one understands it better 134.
So too in our matter:
After Rashi writes the explanation of "above its feet," that this means,
"near its neck it has like two feet besides its four feet, and when it wants to fly and jump from the ground it strengthens itself with those two small legs and takes off" –
he writes "and there are many of them like those that are called langouste,"
i.e., that in the country where the five-year-old lives
(France –
in Rashi's time)
"there are many of them like those that are called langouste" in the vernacular that the five-year-old understands –
because through this the five-year-old can see before his eyes a living reality about which the Torah speaks here "the swarming thing that flies that goes on four, which has legs above its feet,"
consequently he understands better what this is and what "above its feet" means
(as per Rashi –
"near its neck etc.").
Afterwards Rashi must continue "but we are not expert in them etc." –
because since the five-year-old sees this flying swarming thing in his place
(because "there are many of them like those that are called langouste"),
it could become forbidden to him to eat it
(because he sees that it is a food item that the gentiles around him eat from it –
because since this existed there in reality, they certainly used it for eating,
and as it was in Egypt,
as the five-year-old learned135),
and he thinks that it is kosher because it has all the signs, and
(a grasshopper)
does not require shechitah136,
and especially since in other places Jews ate grasshoppers137
(when they knew by tradition that these species of grasshoppers are certainly kosher) –
Therefore Rashi must warn the five-year-old regarding the verse "to separate from transgression"138 –
that "we are not expert in them,"
and even though they have the "four signs of purity" that "were stated regarding them"
("four legs etc."),
"and all these signs are found in those that are among us etc.,"
but "in this we do not know how to distinguish between them,"
therefore one may not eat it.
Based on this, one may add another reason and main point why Rashi writes "there are many of them like those that are called langouste" –
(in addition to the aforementioned reason so that the five-year-old should have before him a living reality) –
that this very thing Rashi brings in order to separate from transgression,
that if a five-year-old will himself see such a species of grasshopper in his city,
and sees that it has all the signs of purity,
he should know that "we are not expert in them etc.,"
consequently he may not eat it.
In order to understand the lesson that can be derived from this Zohar in our parshah and the glosses on the Zohar –
one must preface a general introduction regarding the manner of studying Torah in general and the lessons that must be derived from the Torah that one studies:
Torah from the word hora'ah (instruction)139 means –
that every matter that one studies in Torah,
is not merely an intellectual study and the like,
rather it must permeate him and be for him an instruction in his service of Hashem,
"great is study that leads to action."140 And not only an instruction from the generality of the matter that Torah is the wisdom and will of the Holy One, blessed be He,
rather an instruction from the very content of the matter that he studies.
And as the saying of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe,
that together with this that a Jew must study Torah,
the Torah must teach him.141
For example:
When one studies the verse
(or Rashi on the verse),
or a halachah in Shulchan Aruch about "and you shall love your fellow as yourself,"142
he must study it not merely superficially,
rather it must permeate his innermost being and effect in him an increase in love of Israel in actual deed!
And so too regarding every matter in Torah from the word hora'ah –
the matter that he studies must be actualized within him.
[And even if he then studies the matter a second time –
he attains greater understanding of the matter,
until an entirely different understanding,
because "there are seventy faces to the Torah"143 –
a new instruction in the service of Hashem must come to him.]
And furthermore:
The instruction from what he studies must be not only from the generality of the matter that he studies,
but also from every single detail,
like the name of the author of the maamar and the like,
because since that particular detail was also placed in the Torah, it is understood that from it too there is an instruction for him.
The parable for all this is from the matter of oil –
as is known that Torah is compared to oil:144
The nature of oil is that it permeates every thing145,
even to "the top of the ear of a kid"146.
That is, oil acts in every place it touches,
and acts upon the entire thing,
and in a manner that the oil "goes and spreads",
so that the thing itself becomes a reality of fatness.
So too regarding Torah:
When one learns Torah, it must permeate and penetrate his entire being,
every single detail of him,
until his being becomes "fat" from the oil of the Torah.
And this is so even regarding a detail in Torah
(like the name of the author of the maamar and the like),
just as it is regarding oil,
that even a little oil permeates the entire thing.
So too is it understood when one learns the Zohar at the beginning of our parshah147 –
"And it was on the eighth day etc.,
Rabbi Yitzchak opened etc.":
Immediately when one learns the words "Rabbi Yitzchak opened",
which is indeed only a detail and not the essence of the Torah of Rabbi Yitzchak,
but even this detail is a part of Torah
(Zohar)
from the term hora'ah (instruction),
it must be reflected in a practical instruction that should penetrate and permeate him until it becomes his being.
And in order to know the instruction from this,
one must learn the commentaries on the Zohar,
including the notes of my father on the Zohar,
where he explains the matter of Rabbi Yitzchak in spiritual matters148:
Rabbi Yitzchak is the aspect of gevurot (might)
(as his name Yitzchak),
and his number is eight times Havayah;
ומספרו איז ח' פעמים הוי';
and together with this, Rabbi Yitzchak is also connected with chesed (kindness) –
gevurot sweetened by chasadim,
which is connected with Uriel, chesed,
and his number
(of Uriel)
is eight times E-l.
And from this is understood the instruction that one can derive from this study in the Zohar "Rabbi Yitzchak opened etc.":
A Jew has a commandment "and you shall walk in His ways"149,
"to emulate Him, may He be exalted...
Just as the Holy One, blessed be He, is called Gracious, so too you be gracious,
just as the Holy One, blessed be He, is called Merciful, so too you be merciful,
just as the Holy One, blessed be He, is called Pious, so too you be pious etc."150 –
a Jew must transform his attributes to conduct himself according to the attributes of the Holy One, blessed be He.
And in our matter:
When he learns in the Zohar "opened Rabbi Yitzchak",
whose subject is the aspect of supernal gevurot,
and his number is eight times Havayah,
this is not merely an intellectual study from the lips outward,
rather this must penetrate his attributes and instill in them what he learns, in the manner as above –
the matter of love of Israel when he learns about "and you shall love your fellow as yourself"),
he should know how he must conduct himself with his attributes, with his gevurot,
and with his attribute of mercy,
[which is the matter of the Name Havayah151,
as Rashi explains152,
that the Name Havayah is the attribute of mercy and the Name Elokim is the attribute of gevurah],
"Just as He is Merciful, so too you be merciful." And so too when he learns about its connection to Uriel,
eight times E-l,
which is the attribute of chesed –
he must learn from this regarding his attribute of chesed,
"Just as He is Pious, so too you be pious."
And one could elaborate on this,
and give to the wise and he will become wiser yet.
Based on what was discussed above, that when one learns a subject in Torah it must penetrate and permeate him so that the subject
(that he learns)
should become his being –
it is understandable that so too when one learns a subject that is not currently seen in actuality,
like the present parshah –
"And it was on the eighth day" which speaks about the dwelling of the Shechinah in the Mishkan –
that when he learns about this, it is thereby actualized.
But the question is –
that he sees no Mishkan and sees no Temple,
and on the contrary –
we are in exile?!
He is told:
You have all matters in completeness in spirituality,
and you also have the power to reveal this in physicality,
because it lies locked within you in a "chest"
(as the analogy of the Admore Maharash on this153)
and you have been given the key to the chest,
and you only need to use it and open the chest,
as per the ruling of the Rambam,
that when a Jew performs even one mitzvah he can tip the scale for himself and for the entire world to merit and bring to himself and to them salvation and deliverance;
אז בשעת א איד טוט בלויז א מצוה אחת קען ער מכריע זיין את עצמו ואת כל העולם כולו לכף זכות ומביא לו ולהם תשועה והצלה;
and when you open the "chest" –
the third Beis HaMikdash which is "built and perfected"154 will be revealed and needs to be revealed below,
and the matter of Moshe and Aharon with them155 will be revealed,
and Rabbi Yitzchak with them,
and all the other matters that will then be revealed,
And with joy and a good heart.
Before proceeding to the explanation of this lesson of Rambam –
here is the place to mention again the proposal and request regarding the printing of collections of novellae on the Rambam,
That one should gather novellae on the Rambam
(which were said during the siyum in each and every place)
and print them
(those which are fit for print etc.)
in a collection,
so that one may study them
(also in public)
on the birthday of the Rambam on the eve of Pesach,
and how good –
even before that. As was already discussed at length 156.
And this has a special connection to these days between Purim and Pesach:
The days between Purim and Pesach are days of merit that are especially connected with the study of Torah,
including and especially the study of the Rambam,
the book of halachos
[as brought in various places and as discussed above the advantage of halachos over pilpul and discussion]:
The festival of Purim –
as the words of our Sages 157 on the verse 158 "The Jews had light etc.,"
"light refers to Torah,"
and especially –
the Oral Torah 159,
and the Rambam is "the collector of the entire Oral Torah";
וואס ספר הרמב"ם איז "מקבץ לתושבע"פ כולה";
The festival of Pesach,
the time of our freedom –
as our Sages said 160 "You have no free person except one who engages in Torah study."
Therefore now is a special time and a suitable time to print the collections,
and also –
to arouse Jews in general regarding studying the lessons in the Rambam,
in one of the three ways:
three chapters a day,
one chapter a day,
or the Sefer HaMitzvos.
And as discussed many times, this matter has a connection to all Jews –
men, women, and children –
as is known the ruling
(in Hilchos Talmud Torah of the Alter Rebbe, end of chapter 1)
that women are also obligated in Torah study regarding "the halachos that are necessary for them etc. and all positive time-bound commandments and all negative commandments" and more 161 –
consequently they have a connection to the study of the Rambam
(and especially to the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Rambam),
for a large part of it consists of halachos that women need to study.
And especially beginning from Sefer HaMada
(in the Rambam),
which discusses the six mitzvos that are always obligatory
(belief in Hashem,
love of Hashem,
fear of Hashem etc.) 162,
mitzvos that women are also obligated in.
And as we see in practice,
that Jewish women and girls have taken hold of studying the lessons in the Rambam,
and especially the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Rambam.
And on the contrary:
We see in practice that in several matters women have taken hold of this more than the men,
and they specifically have influenced their husbands and sons etc.!
And it is similar to what was at the preparation for the giving of the Torah,
of the Torah of Moshe ben Amram,
that first it was "Thus shall you say to the house of Yaakov" 163 –
"these are the women" 164,
and only afterwards "and tell the children of Israel" 163 –
"these are the men" 165 –
so too regarding the study of the Rambam,
Moshe ben Maimon,
of whom "from Moshe to Moshe none arose like Moshe" 166,
that in quite a few places women have taken hold of studying the lessons before the men,
and they have influenced that their husbands and sons etc. should also study Rambam.
And may it be His will that this be a close preparation that will further hasten the time when Mashiach will teach all the people 167 the Torah of Mashiach
(as explained in the discourses of Pesach 168),
and even higher –
"They shall no longer teach each man his fellow...
for they shall all know Me, from their smallest to their greatest" 169,
men, women, and children. But on the other hand:
Even then –
there will be even higher levels in Divinity that one will need to attain to study from Mashiach,
as explained at length in Sefer HaMitzvos of the Tzemach Tzedek, the mitzvah of appointing a king 170.
And as explained in Likkutei Torah 171 –
that the levels in Divinity which today can be grasped only through faith,
in the manner of encompassing and concealment,
because in this time they are beyond the comprehension of created beings internally –
will in the future be drawn down in the manner of knowledge
(internally and revealed),
and then faith will be in even higher levels,
and thus one ascends from level to level to a higher level until the summit of levels in myriads of levels without end and limit,
where each level relative to the level below it is in the manner of encompassing and one can grasp it only through faith,
but afterwards that too is drawn into knowledge,
and then faith is in an even higher level in Divinity,
and so one goes from level to level until infinity.
One can say that these two general stages are the two levels in the conclusion of the Rambam's book:
"At that time... they will attain knowledge of their Creator according to the capacity of man, as it is said 172 'For the earth shall be filled with knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea'." It is discussed 173 that in this there are two stages and matters:
a) The attainment of knowledge of the Creator will be "according to the capacity of man",
in the aspect of knowledge according to the vessel of his attainment. b) Afterwards, one will be elevated to an even higher level –
the attainment of Elokus in the manner of "as the waters cover the sea",
so that also the aspect of Elokus which was previously above the boundaries of his intellect
(and he took it only through faith)
is drawn down within him in the aspect of knowledge
(in inwardness and revelation) 174,
and like "I knew it, I was it" 175.
Based on the above, one will also understand the explanation in today's lesson of Rambam –
regarding that a Sefer Torah is "the faithful witness" upon Jews
("and it shall be there with you as a witness"),
and the difference between the testimony of a Sefer Torah and the testimony
(sign)
of Tefillin.
And with an introduction:
Based on what is explained above from Likkutei Torah
[that at the time when there will be attainment and knowledge on a higher level in Elokus,
there will then be faith in even higher levels,
which are then in the aspect of makif and concealment] –
it is understandable how also in the future, Jews will be "witnesses" upon the Most High –
"You are My witnesses":
The concept of testimony applies "to a matter that is hidden and concealed from the eyes of all". For a matter that is revealed and a thing that is destined to be revealed, one does not need to come to testimony,
because it is revealed anyway,
testimony is needed specifically for a "matter that is completely concealed" 176.
Accordingly, a question arises:
Since in the future it will be "and the glory of Hashem shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see that the mouth of Hashem has spoken" –
why will one need to come to Jews as "witnesses" upon the Holy One, blessed be He
("You are My witnesses")?
The explanation of this is:
At the time when it will be "and the glory of Hashem shall be revealed, etc.",
up to the attainment of Elokus in the aspect of knowledge,
one will then need to have faith and "testimony" upon higher levels in Elokus which are then in concealment. And even when the higher levels will afterwards be drawn down in revelation in the intellect,
one will need to come to "testimony" to reveal even higher levels in Elokus,
until the true essence of the matter of testimony is specifically upon His Essence,
which is entirely not within the category of revelation and the category of intellect,
a "matter that is completely concealed" 177.
And therefore, specifically Jews are "witnesses" upon the Holy One, blessed be He –
because they are rooted in His Essence,
therefore they can be "witnesses" upon "the aspect of the inner and essential Ein Sof,
which is above the source of the chain of descent even from the aspect of Sovev 178,
and certainly upon the levels below this.
Just as this is regarding the "testimony" of Jews upon the Most High,
so too one can say this regarding the "testimony" of a Sefer Torah
("the faithful witness")
upon Jews:
Upon the revealed matters and virtues
(or destined to be revealed)
that exist in Jews –
one does not need "testimony". The true essence of the matter of "testimony" is needed specifically upon the essential connection between Jews and His Essence,
which is a "matter that is completely concealed",
entirely not within the category of revelation, etc.
And based on this, one can say the reason why the Rambam in his book writes only about the special relationship one must have to a Sefer Torah because it is "the faithful witness" upon Jews,
and does not write it regarding Tefillin
(even though Tefillin is also a "sign and witness") –
because specifically a Sefer Torah is "the faithful witness" upon the essential category of Jews –
their essential connection with His Essence,
unlike Tefillin which is only a "sign and witness" upon a particular matter, etc.
And the explanation:
In the fulfillment of the mitzvah of Tefillin, there are many conditions and limitations,
both regarding the person, the time, and the place:
Specifically a man after Bar Mitzvah,
is obligated in this,
unlike women and girls 178 and boys before Bar Mitzvah 179. And also a man –
must have a clean body 180. Night is not the time for Tefillin 181. From this it is understood,
that the "sign" (witness)
of Tefillin is not upon the essential category of Jews
(their essential connection with the Most High) –
because this connection is equal among all Jews and in all times and situations –
and the mitzvah and "sign" of Tefillin is only for men,
after Bar Mitzvah,
and only by day,
and only with a clean body and the other conditions involved;
און נאר מיט א גוף נקי ושאר התנאים שבזה;
Tefillin are a "sign" (witness)
connected only with the individual person who lays the tefillin,
and only in the situation and time when he lays the tefillin. But they are not a general "sign" upon all Jews and in all times.
However, a Sefer Torah belongs to all Jews and in all times,
and therefore it is "the faithful witness" upon all Jews and in all times –
because it is "the faithful witness" upon the very definition of Jews –
their essential connection with the Most High –
which is equal among all Jews and in all times and situations.
It follows that the testimony of a Sefer Torah is entirely in a different category than the testimony of tefillin:
Tefillin are a "sign" (witness)
upon an individual person at a specific time and in a specific situation;
אויף אן אדם פרטי בזמן מסויים ובמצב מסויים;
however, a Sefer Torah is "the faithful witness" upon the very definition of Jews –
their essential connection with the Most High.
Therefore, the Rambam brings as halachah only regarding the special relationship that one must have toward a Sefer Torah because of the fact that it is "the faithful witness" upon Jews,
and he does not write it regarding tefillin
(even though tefillin are also a "sign"),
because specifically a Sefer Torah is the true witness
("the faithful witness")
upon the very definition of Jews –
their essential connection with the Most High.
An example of the matter –
from the various levels that exist in acquisition and the validity of the acquisition:
Acquisition of produce. Stronger –
acquisition of land,
but it is voided in the Jubilee. Even stronger – acquisition
(ownership)
of land through inheritance,
which is a permanent acquisition,
but in the Sabbatical year
(and likewise in the Jubilee)
there occurs in it "the king's expropriation." Then there is the strongest acquisition –
that which the Most High gave the Holy Land to Jews,
in which in the ownership of Jews there are no changes and no limitations from the aspect of time and situation, and there is no difference whether Jews live in the Land of Israel;
וואס אין דער בעה"ב'ישקייט פון אידן זיינען ניטא קיינע שינויים און קיינע הגבלות מצד הזמן והמצב און ס'איז קיין חילוק ניט צי אידן לעבן אין ארץ ישראל;
the Land of Israel belongs to Jews without any distinction of whatever time and situation it is.
And the difference between them is:
All these previous levels in acquisition –
are acquisitions of a human being
(which come through the action of a human being),
therefore there is no acquisition in the very land,
because a human being is after all not the true owner of the land
(the Most High is the true owner of it),
consequently changes can occur in it
(in the Sabbatical year,
in the Jubilee, etc.).
However, that which the Most High gave the Land of Israel to Jews –
is an acquisition that comes through the Holy One, blessed be He,
who transfers, as it were, His ownership of the Land of Israel also to Jews
(because of the fact that Jews are rooted in His very Essence, may He be blessed),
consequently it is connected with the very land –
therefore no changes are applicable in it.
And analogously, just as this is regarding the essential connection between Jews and the Land of Israel –
so too is this regarding the essential connection between Jews and the Most High
(upon which a Sefer Torah is "the faithful witness"):
Tefillin are a "sign" only upon the holiness of an individual person in a specific situation and time
(analogous and similar to the levels in acquisition in which changes are applicable).
However, a Sefer Torah is "the faithful witness" upon the essential connection of Jews with His very Essence, may He be blessed –
upon the essential holiness of Jews which the Most High has placed in them
(as it were)
from His holiness, may He be blessed.
As it is written *185 "You shall be holy, for I am holy":
Jews are "holy" by virtue of that which "(for)
I am holy."
And in particular according to the explanation of this in the Midrash on the verse "You shall be holy –
it could be [understood] like Me,
the verse teaches, for I am holy" –
that "it could be [understood] like Me" is with ease,
that "You shall be holy" can indeed be "
(it could be –)
like Me",
the holiness of Israel can be like the holiness of the Holy One, blessed be He.
And the power
(and reason)
for this is – "
(the verse teaches)
for I am holy":
since "I am holy" and the Most High is the Master of His holiness,
He can and He has "given" it to Jews
(as it were),
that they should be "holy" "like Me"!
And this is also analogous to the explanation that was spoken about on the well-known question of foreknowledge and free choice:
Since the Most High knows in advance,
and even before the world was created,
how the person will choose –
how can the person choose in a different manner?
They answered on this –
According to the explanation of the Rambam regarding the general concept of free will:
"And do not wonder and say, how can a person do whatever he desires and his actions be given over to him, and can he do something in the world without the permission of his Creator and His desire, and the verse says, 'Whatever the L-rd desires He does in heaven and on earth,'
Know that everything is done according to His desire, even though our actions are given over to us,
How so? Just as the Creator desired that fire and wind ascend upward and water and earth descend downward...
And likewise the rest of the creatures of the world to follow their nature which He desired,
So too He desired that a person have his authority in his hand and all his actions be given over to him, and he shall have neither a coercer nor a puller, but he, of himself and with his intellect that G-d gave him, does everything that a person can do."
This means:
Since the Almighty "desires" that a person have true free will,
Just as the Almighty Himself has true free will,
As it is written, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us" –
All the questions fall away: How can a person have free will and do something "without the permission of his Creator"
(When everything depends on the Almighty),
And why does [His] knowledge not compel [the] free will –
Because the Almighty is the Master over all matters,
Also over His dominion in the entire world
(So that nothing in the world should do anything "without the permission of his Creator").
And a Master over His own free will,
And the Almighty is "the Impossible of the Impossibles,"
He has no limitations,
He can do as He wishes –
Therefore, with Him there can also be "desire,"
And so it is in actuality,
That a person is "like one of Us" and has true free will to do as he wishes,
In such a manner that "he shall have neither a coercer nor a puller, etc."
Based on this, one can explain another wondrous thing:
Jews have a commandment of "And you shall walk in His ways,"
"To emulate Him, may He be exalted,"
That "just as the Holy One, blessed be He, is called gracious, so too you shall be gracious,
Just as the Holy One, blessed be He, is called merciful, so too you shall be merciful, etc."
The question arises:
How can one demand of a Jew that he should resemble the Almighty?!
The explanation of this is:
Since the Almighty is the Master over His own "attributes"
(Gracious and merciful, etc.) –
Therefore He can and has given them
(so to speak)
To Jews,
That "just as the Holy One, blessed be He, is called gracious, so too you shall be gracious, etc."
In the manner discussed earlier,
Since "I am holy" and He is the Master over His holiness, may He be exalted,
He can give from His holiness, may He be exalted, to Jews,
So that they should be "holy" "like Me."
In the manner discussed earlier regarding free will –
Since the Almighty is "the Impossible of the Impossibles,"
He can make that Jews be "like one of Us" and have true free will to do as they see fit,
So to speak, exactly as the Almighty has free will to do as He sees fit.
And all these questions of how can this be,
And what is the logical explanation for this,
And it is not understandable with intellect, etc. –
Are not questions at all when it comes to the Almighty. As everyone understands,
Even a non-believer,
All the more so a believer –
Since you yourself say that He is the Almighty,
That is, that He is above you,
And above your limitations of nature and intellect, etc.,
Then how can you limit Him according to your limitations of intellect and nature?!
It is a contradiction in and of itself:
Here you say that He is the "Almighty,"
Above everything,
And He created everything,
And together with this you limit Him according to your intellect and nature!
Since one says that He is the Almighty,
And He created all the boundaries of nature and intellect, etc.,
It is understandable that He can do things that are not necessarily contained within nature and intellect as He created them,
Including also –
Giving a Jew His power of free will,
And the power of His attributes,
And His holiness, etc.
But what of the question that there are thirteen principles and "impossibilities," etc.?
That itself was determined by the Almighty,
That in these matters the Almighty took away [the] free will,
But in other matters the Almighty gave [the] free will to Jews.
According to the above, the saying of the Chassidim is also understood,
that even though the language of the researchers of Israel is "If I knew Him, I would be Him,"
but regarding Chassidus it is "I knew Him, I am Him." And as the saying of the Admor
(the Rebbe Rashab)
of blessed memory:
נ"ע 197:
"When one sits in his room and opens the Likkutei Torah, one feels the Essence of the Infinite One,"
"I knew Him, I am Him!"
At first glance –
how can this be?
The explanation of this is –
that the Supreme One,
Who is omnipotent,
has given the power that there should be "I knew Him, I am Him."
Similar to how He gave the power that Jews should be "like one of us" and have true free choice.
The explanation of the second matter in the Rambam –
why does the Rambam not count among the twenty disqualifications the disqualification of writing "part of the Name on one line and part of it suspended":
One must say that the Rambam includes this disqualification
(among the twenty disqualifications)
in the disqualifications "one who changed the form of the songs" and "one who wrote in the rest of the writing as a song" –
from which it is understood that just as one may not change "the form of the songs" and one must write them as detailed specifically in the laws,
so too "in the rest of the writing"
(which one may not write "as a song") –
one may also not change the form of "the rest of the writing,"
and one must write it as detailed earlier in the laws,
including the detail that one may not write "part of the Name on one line and part of it suspended."
And the reason why the Rambam does not write it explicitly,
and only alludes to it as above –
one may say in a possible manner,
because he wants that thereby there should be a total of the number twenty
(disqualifications).
As discussed several times,
from the commentators of the Rambam,
that for the Rambam the matter of numbers in general was precious,
and he had a tendency to connect every matter with a number according to Torah,
and in particular –
certain numbers,
like the number fourteen, therefore he divided the book Mishneh Torah into fourteen books.
And likewise in the laws of offerings he is precise to bring a matter specifically in the number fourteen,
as discussed at length once,
and more),
and likewise numbers in a round ten –
the number ten,
or twenty,
or seventy and so forth.
And likewise one must say here –
that the Rambam wanted specifically to have a number of twenty
[because this is corresponding to the Ten Commandments and the Ten Utterances,
or for another reason].
As it is necessary to say in any case:
The first three disqualifications that the Rambam enumerates are –
"if it was written on the hide of a non-kosher animal,"
"that it was written on the hide of a kosher animal that is not processed,"
"that it was processed not for the sake of a Torah scroll."
The question arises:
Since in a Torah scroll one must have all three conditions together,
that it should be a kosher animal,
and processed and for its sake
(not like in other matters where one of them suffices) –
the Rambam could have written all three disqualifications together,
and not specify them as three disqualifications.
From this itself it is understood,
that the Rambam specifically wanted to have here specifically the number twenty,
therefore he divided the three matters into three disqualifications. And the division also has a place –
as one indeed finds in other things that one does not need to have all three things,
one is not indispensable for the other,
consequently it is understood that they are essentially three separate things
(only in a Torah scroll all three must be present).
And since the Rambam was precise here to have specifically the number twenty –
therefore he did not write explicitly the aforementioned disqualification "part of the Name on one line and part of it suspended,"
and he included it in the disqualifications of "one who changed the form of the songs" and "one who wrote in the rest of the writing as a song,"
as above.
Thus one may say in a possible manner,
and a better explanation I have not yet found for the time being.
Of course,
so if one has a comment on this explanation or another resolution –
one should not be ashamed and should arouse oneself about this. As we have the instruction from what the Rambam writes in a letter to those who asked him a question on a halachah that he wrote,
and they apologize for the fact that they ask him a question,
the Rambam writes back to them –
that they have nothing to apologize for because he does not, heaven forbid, have any complaint,
and on the contrary –
he is pleased that they are delving into the matter. And furthermore –
he thanks them for the fact that they have established him upon the truth.
And all the more so that this is so regarding people like us –
that when one asks a question about another,
and he does not intend thereby merely to bother him, heaven forbid,
but he truly does not understand the matter –
he should have no complaint against him,
and on the contrary –
he should be pleased that one delves into it,
and all the more so that it can sometimes be that the other
(with his question)
establishes him upon the truth.
(His Holiness, the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, laughed,
and said:)
And especially since this is sometimes also connected with "And you shall love your fellow as yourself":
One sees in practice that one has a completely different enjoyment when one asks another! Consequently, this is simply related to love of Israel that the other should ask him a question,
because the other receives enjoyment from it! And especially since it is additionally Shabbat –
he has from it Oneg Shabbat! But even on weekdays –
he has enjoyment in it...
Therefore, it is a correct thing that if one has thought through the matter properly and one has a question on it –
not merely to bother oneself, heaven forbid,
but because the matter truly pertains to him –
one should not apologize and one should ask,
as it was with the Rambam, –
and sometimes one can establish the other upon the truth through asking.
And the main point is –
that each one should establish himself upon the truth,
and one should establish the entire world upon the truth,
including the nations of the world,
by perpetuating in the world the "truth of the Lord forever",
which primarily is through the fact that one fulfills the ruling in the Rambam that "Moses our Teacher commanded from the mouth of the Almighty to compel all the inhabitants of the world to accept the commandments that were commanded to the children of Noah."
And this will be a close preparation for "For then I will turn to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the Lord, to serve Him with one accord"
(as the Rambam brings in his book),
and the nations of the world will also ascend "to Zion",
and to the Holy Temple,
in the places permitted to them
(as the Rambam rules),
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah,
and speedily in our days, literally.
His Holiness, the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, instructed to sing "He will build the Holy Temple," etc.
Surely one need not mention about making the proper preparations for "Operation Passover" –
rather, "one urges only those who are eager."
And this regarding all good matters,
and with joy and a good heart.
Now we will also mention –
that all those who need to recite a final blessing,
will surely recite a final blessing.
