English translation 1
This is the Shabbos that comes immediately after the days of Purim.
This is the Shabbos that comes immediately after the days of Purim.
And although there are other matters in this Shabbos that seemingly have no connection to Purim,
and especially the Torah reading and the conclusion of the reading and the reading of the Haftarah on this Shabbos –
Parshat Parah –
it has a great connection to the holiday of Pesach
(not with Purim),
as explained the reason for reading Parshat Parah before Parshat HaChodesh,
"to warn Israel to purify themselves so that they may make their Pesach offerings in purity"1
Nevertheless,
since this Shabbos comes immediately after Purim and we have a chazakah of three days
(for three times establishes a chazakah2)
in the matter of Purim:
the day of Ta'anit Esther,
the day of Purim and the day of Shushan Purim,
which these three days are all connected to Purim,
we have a chazakah in the matter of Purim –
it is therefore understood that on this Shabbos, the matter of Purim stands out primarily and first,
and it has precedence over the other matters due to the chazakah of the matter.
And in addition to this:
the Shabbos after Purim is a matter of the frequent (tadir),
whereas Parshat Parah is not always on this Shabbos after Purim,
sometimes it is on the following Shabbos
(as it is written in the calendars).
And we have a rule3 that "the frequent and the infrequent,
the frequent takes precedence",
consequently, the matter that this is the Shabbos after Purim has precedence over Parshat Parah.
And precedence in all matters that are connected to order
(precedence and postponement) –
which are all matters of holiness,
as is known that order is specifically connected to holiness,
whereas in the realm of the profane it is the opposite of order,
beginning from the very matter that there is an existence of the profane –
which is the greatest opposite of order!
And as it is stated in verses and words of our Sages,
and explained in books of ethics and in books of Chassidus and Kabbalah,
and also understood simply –
that order is connected to good,
and good is connected to holiness4 which is connected to the One Above.
And based on this it is understood that in all matters of holiness and matters of service, on this Shabbos one must begin with the matter that this is the Shabbos after Purim
(because of that which the frequent takes precedence).
And as in all matters,
from this must come a directive in actual deed.
And an explanation of the content of the matter of this Shabbos after Purim:
The completeness and ultimate elevation of the service during the days of the week is accomplished on the Shabbos that follows them,
when the "Vayechulu"5 of all matters of the days of the week that preceded it occurs.
And as is understood from this that in addition to the matters and virtues that each day of the week has on its own,
there must be evident and felt in it the matter of Shabbos and how it is a preparation for Shabbos,
through which there is an elevation in the days of the week.
As we say in the Shir Shel Yom of each day –
"Today is the first day of Shabbos",
"Today is the second day of Shabbos" etc.:
In addition to the simple interpretation that "of Shabbos" here means "of the week",
there is also in this the interpretation that it means "Shabbos" literally,
that each day is a preparation for Shabbos,
"Today is the first day of Shabbos".
Until the Ramban writes6 that the reason Jews count the days in reference to Shabbos,
"the first of Shabbos,
the second of Shabbos",
"Today is the first day of Shabbos"
(and not "today is the first day of the week")
etc.,
is because "this is from the commandment we were commanded to remember it always, every day",
the commandment of "Remember the Shabbos day to sanctify it"7,
which is
(according to the Ramban)
a positive commandment
(not only on Shabbos day, but)
every day. And on the contrary:
the main diligence in remembering Shabbos must be not on Shabbos day but on the weekdays,
which are in themselves not Shabbos.
Furthermore:
On the weekdays, Shabbos is felt not only in the manner of remembrance
("Remember the Shabbos day"),
but then there must also be a preparation in actual service for Shabbos day –
as our Sages said8:
"Whoever toiled on Erev Shabbos will eat on Shabbos". And it is known that the Shabbos meal
(and Yom Tov),
which is an important meal,
requires preparation
(unlike a weekday meal)9,
consequently, the preparation for this "will eat on Shabbos" must be through "toiled on Erev Shabbos",
which includes
(not only Erev Shabbos literally, but)
all the days of the week that precede it.
And in particular, one sees simply that on the Sabbath day it is a mitzvah to delight in it10 with eating and drinking,
and one eats more important foods,
eating fatty meat and drinking aged wine11 etc.,
and one puts on nicer garments,
and in general –
one does things that require more preparation and expense than the matters that one does on weekdays –
therefore it is understood that there must be extra preparation for this during the weekdays before the Sabbath
("toil on the eve of the Sabbath"),
in order to be able to have all these matters on the Sabbath from that which is prepared.
One sees from this that the ultimate elevation of the service throughout all the weekdays –
is the Sabbath day,
when the ultimate purpose of all the preparation and toil on the eve of the Sabbath is carried out –
the "he shall eat on the Sabbath",
the fulfillment of the mitzvah of Oneg Shabbat through eating and drinking etc.
That is, on the Sabbath one elevates the weekday actions of the weekdays and makes from them
(a part of)
the mitzvah of Oneg Shabbat,
and then all these matters become elevated so that they are in a manner of "all your work is done"12,
it is indeed "your work" – your labor,
but it is in a manner of "done" without any toil of man.
This is in the manner and analogous to that on the Sabbath day itself a Jew elevates physical things,
eating fatty meat and drinking aged wine etc.,
and makes from them a mitzvah of Oneg Shabbat,
until a Jew "delights in the Sabbath"13,
he adds delight in the Sabbath more than the Sabbath has from its own side
(from the aspect of "it is sanctified and established"14),
as has been discussed many times.
From which it is understood,
since the Oneg Shabbat
(and the one who delights in the Sabbath)
comes through the service and toil during the weekdays as preparation for the Sabbath –
there is also an elevation on the Sabbath day in the service itself
(of the weekdays).
And this is so regarding ordinary weekdays.
All the more so when the weekdays are days of purity,
like the days of Purim in our case –
it is understood that the "toil" of an ordinary weekday is not comparable
to the "toil" of days of purity,
therefore it is understood that also the elevation and "he shall eat" of the Sabbath is with greater strength and greater power.
And as is simply understood,
that when a day of purity like Purim comes after the Sabbath,
the elevation in the Sabbath is higher than the elevation of ordinary weekdays.
That is, after all these most lofty elevations of the service during the days of Purim from their own side,
as will be explained,
when the Sabbath comes, there is yet a higher elevation in them.
And the elevation and novelty of the matter is simply understood:
Purim itself is a most lofty matter
(as will be explained at length),
so much so that the service then is in a manner of "until one does not know"15,
that is, beyond all measure and limitation. Furthermore:
It states in the Tikkunei Zohar16,
Nishmata de'Oraita17,
that "Yom HaKippurim" is named after "k'Purim",
with a kaf of comparison,
and the explanation of this name "Purim" in Nishmata de'Oraita,
the inner dimension of the Torah
(Tikkunei Zohar),
reveals the inner dimension and soul of the matter as it is in the external dimension of the Torah,
the bodies of Torah,
the revealed part of the Torah17 –
that in Purim there is a matter that is not merely like Yom Kippur,
"once a year"18,
but on the contrary:
in this, Purim is even higher than Yom Kippur,
so much so that it is said that "Yom HaKippurim" is only "k'Purim",
with a kaf of comparison!
And after this most lofty elevation in Purim,
it is said that when the Sabbath after Purim comes –
there is yet a higher elevation! For seemingly, Purim is already "until one does not know",
beyond all measure and limitation –
so how is it possible to have something higher than this?!
It is, however, understood,
since Purim
(and all matters of holiness)
is connected with the Supreme One who is without end –
therefore, even though Purim is beyond measure and limitation
("until one does not know"),
it is always possible that in Purim there should constantly come yet a higher elevation. For it is known that within the infinite itself there are levels one above the other until the Ein Sof19.
And as is simply understood from the essential concept of "a person is obligated to become intoxicated on Purim until he does not know":
For the most part
(and the Torah speaks of the majority20),
one does not immediately begin the service in the manner of "until he does not know",
but rather proceeds with an order step by step:
First one holds at "knows". Then one comes to "until he does not know",
and then to a higher level in "until he does not know". One sees from this that in reaching the concept of "until he does not know" it is emphasized that there are levels
(and not that one comes and immediately holds at beyond measure (and limitation).
And consequently it is understandable that also in "until he does not know" there are levels one above the other.
From this it is understood,
that notwithstanding that Purim in its essence is beyond measure and limitation,
and is in certain matters higher than Yom Kippur,
there comes in it yet a higher level and ascent without limit in the Shabbat that follows it.
And one of the explanations of this can be said:
It is known that Shabbat contains within itself two matters:
a) As it is connected with time –
it is one of the seven days of creation,
the seventh day21,
b) As it is
(an ascent)
above time,
higher than the limitation of limited days
(of the other days of the week),
by virtue of which the counting of days after Shabbat begins anew from Sunday22.
And based on this it is understood,
that by virtue of Shabbat being higher than the limitation of time of the days of the week,
including also the days of Purim,
which are also limited days
(relative to the matter of above time that is in Shabbat) –
the unlimitedness of Shabbat is yet higher than the unlimitedness
("until he does not know")
of Purim.
Based on the above it is understood,
that in order to understand the instruction in service in the Shabbat after Purim –
one must first know in what the service of the days of Purim in general consists,
and including also the matters that come about due to the fixing of the year,
and then one can know the instruction that on the Shabbat following it there must be in all these matters yet a higher ascent.
And the concept:
In the days of Purim the concept of "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the time of the giving of the Torah23 was revealed,
i.e., a strengthening and reinforcement and fulfillment in the totality of the concept of the acceptance of the Torah and the commandments.
And this "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" is in a manner of "until he does not know" –
self-sacrifice
(similar to the precedence of "we will do" to "we will hear" at the giving of the Torah24),
which is beyond all measure and limitation.
"And these days are remembered and done"25,
in the days of Purim each and every year the matters are "remembered" as they were the first time,
and not only "remembered",
but "and done",
in actual deed26. Beginning as it was in the second year that "And Queen Esther wrote... and Mordechai the Jew, all the strength to fulfill this second letter of Purim"27
(in the second year they again sent books that they should make Purim28)
[ "double for wisdom"29 –
the virtue of the penitent30],
i.e., that they established the festival of Purim as a holiday for all Jews and in all places,
not only in that year when the miracle occurred and in Shushan where the miracle occurred,
but also in the second year and in all places,
and not only in a manner of "remembered" but "and done" in actual deed. And afterwards each and every year further "these days are remembered
(and also)
and done" in the concept of "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah,
fulfillment and strengthening and reinforcement in the study of Torah and fulfillment of commandments out of self-sacrifice.
And according to the rule of "we ascend in holiness"31,
it is understandable that each and every year there comes an ascent in holiness in this "they fulfilled what they had already accepted".
i.e., that in addition to what in the days of Purim becomes "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the time of the giving of the Torah,
there also becomes
(in the days of Purim each year)
"they fulfilled what they had already fulfilled" in the days of Purim in the previous year –
a higher level in fulfillment in the acceptance of the Torah and commandments out of self-sacrifice in a manner of "until he does not know",
above measure and limitation.
And in this itself there is the virtue of the three days of chazakah in matters of Purim
(as above section 1) –
the Fast of Esther,
the day of Purim and Shushan Purim,
and each day there is "we ascend in holiness" relative to the day before it:
On Purim there is an ascent in holiness relative to the Fast of Esther,
and afterwards on Shushan Purim there is an ascent relative to Purim,
in addition to that then the moon stands in its fullness32.
The lesson from this is simply:
During the days of Purim, each person must attain strength and permanence in accepting the Torah and commandments in a more elevated manner than it was during the days of Purim in all previous years.
And this itself must not be in secret,
but rather with publicity,
in accordance with that which on Purim there must be publicizing of the miracle33,
i.e., that the "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" must be with publicity –
the general matter of spreading the Torah and spreading Judaism.
In this, there is an additional lesson from the days of Purim:
Just as one is still in exile and is among gentiles,
there can be things that confuse in the world that hinder the service of a Jew –
one has the lesson from the days of Purim,
that even though "we are still servants of Achashverosh"34
(one is still in exile),
there is the complete nullification of Haman's decree,
"the oppressor of all the Jews"35,
and from the descendants of Amalek,
who is "the first among nations is Amalek"36,
and in service –
the matter of pride and selfhood37,
which is the head and root of all husks,
and Amalek in gematria is doubt38,
and if he cannot cast a doubt into the service,
he casts at least coldness39.
Purim teaches,
that there is the complete nullification of all these confusing matters.
And on the contrary:
"Many from among the peoples of the land became Jews
(converted)
"40,
" 40,
darkness was transformed into light. And regarding all others who are not relevant to this –
there will be "the fear of the Jews fell upon them"40:
In this there is even more wonder
(than in "many from among the peoples of the land became Jews"),
because the very fact that the peoples of the land "became Jews"
(converted)
proves that they had a connection to this even before this*<sup>40</sup>;
באווייזט אז זיי האבן דערצו א שייכות אויך לפני זה* 40;
however, the other nations who do not hold by this,
are on a lower level –
and nevertheless, "the fear of the Jews fell upon them",
even though "we are still servants of Achashverosh" and one is in the time and place of exile.
In this, there is additional emphasis from the fact that Purim is also connected with the matter of "connecting redemption to redemption"41,
the redemption of Purim to the redemption of Passover
[and this matter is revealed in a leap year,
like this year,
as will be explained in section 7 and onward),
which also has a connection to the future redemption42,
for "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt, I will show him wonders"43:
Also in the redemption of Passover, one sees the aforementioned matter that is in the redemption of Purim,
that even though one is still in the Egyptian exile, "for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings"
(even though in Egypt there was darkness)44,
and to such an extent that this gave Jews the ability45 that Jews could enter the houses of the Egyptians and "the Israelites searched and saw all their vessels, and when they left, they would ask them, and they would say, 'We have nothing in our possession,'
he would say to him, 'I saw it in your house, and in such and such a place it is'"46,
And this was,
as mentioned,
when Jews were still in the Egyptian exile among gentiles
(the Egyptians)
and the gentiles there were homeowners,
as emphasized in this very fact that the Jews entered the houses of the Egyptians and the vessels remained vessels of the Egyptians,
therefore the Jews had to later ask them for the vessels –
because if the vessels did not belong to the Egyptians,
one could not fulfill the command of "and you shall empty out Egypt"<sup>47</sup>;
וואלט מען ניט געקענט מקיים זיין דער ציווי פון "ונצלתם את מצרים" 47;
And even though the Jews were in the Egyptian exile and the Egyptians there were homeowners –
there was a miracle that "for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings"!
Furthermore:
The miracle that "for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings" occurred at the time of the act when in Egypt there was the plague of darkness,
and not merely darkness, but "a darkness that could be felt"48.
That is, at the time when there was a state of darkness for the Egyptians –
for the Jews there was "light in their dwellings";
איז בא אידן געווען "אור במושבותם";
for the Jews there was not merely an additional thing
(which was not present by the Egyptians),
but a matter of light that is the opposite of darkness.
The wonder in this is even greater –
which one does not pay attention to:
The plague of darkness and "and he caused darkness" was a miracle of the Holy One, blessed be He, by the command of Hashem to Moshe Rabbeinu48. Consequently, it follows,
that the miracle that at the time of the act there was light for the Jews,
was not merely a miraculous light that is the opposite of natural darkness,
but a miraculous light that is the opposite of a miracle of natural darkness by and through the command of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and furthermore –
the opposite of a miraculous darkness
("and he caused darkness")!
This is indeed a great wonder:
The concept of the advantage of light from darkness49 generally speaks about
(the advantage of light)
from the darkness of the side of impurity or from natural darkness,
and such light that comes from darkness
(of the side of impurity or of nature)
is a most sublime light,
which is incomparably greater than ordinary light50.
In the exile of Egypt, however, there was an even higher advantage of light from darkness:
not only the advantage of light from the darkness of the side of impurity or from natural darkness,
but from the darkness of a miracle
(up to "and he caused darkness")
by the command of the Holy One, blessed be He –
it is therefore understood that this was a most sublime light,
a light that shines even in a miraculous darkness by the command of Hashem!
And it is understood,
that this "light in their dwellings" was not only at the end of the plague,
but in the midst of the plague,
because the Jews needed time to go to the houses of the Egyptians and search for the vessels etc.51,
which takes a duration of time,
consequently, during that entire time light needed to shine for them –
even though at that very moment there was darkness in Egypt by a miracle of the Holy One, blessed be He!
Furthermore:
Regarding the plague of darkness, the Torah explicitly states a command of the Holy One, blessed be He:
but regarding "and for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings," the Torah does not state a command in speech and openly
(the Torah only relates the fact)!
That is, even though there was no explicit command of the Holy One, blessed be He, that there should be light for the Jews,
and even though the command regarding the plague of darkness was also not nullified –
there was light for the Jews,
at the very time when in Egypt there was darkness by the command of Hashem!
From this we see that also in the redemption of Pesach it was similar to the situation in the redemption of Purim –
"connecting redemption to redemption" –
that even though "we are still servants of Achashverosh",
"many of the people of the land became Jews" and regarding all others "the fear of the Jews fell upon them".
And from "connecting redemption to redemption"
(the redemption of Purim to the redemption of Pesach)
we come to the future redemption,
for "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt I will show you wonders",
and furthermore:
in the future redemption there will be "I will show you wonders" even regarding the wonders of the redemption from Egypt
(as stated in the Zohar52,
brought and explained in Ohr HaTorah of the Tzemach Tzedek53 and in many places) –
at which time there will be the perfection of the action and influence upon the nations of the world:
"and the kingdom will be Hashem's"54,
and as the ruling of the Rambam at the end of the Laws of Kings55,
that "then56 I will turn to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of Hashem and serve Him57 with one accord".
And "as in the days of your exodus from the land of Egypt",
something similar already existed while still in the exile of Egypt,
"and for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings"
(and they were able to see the vessels of the Egyptians in order to fulfill "and you shall empty out Egypt")
as above –
and so too in this last exile
(before the future redemption),
that while still in exile
("Mitzrayim" from the term)
straits and limitations58,
there is for the Jews "light in their dwellings",
and the advantage of light from darkness,
even from miraculous darkness by the command of Hashem,
all the more so from the darkness of the side of impurity and natural darkness.
All the above is the lesson of Purim in every year.
In this, it comes with greater strength and greater vigor due to the determination of Purim in this year:
A) Purim occurred on the third day on which "it was good" was doubled59,
and as discussed above60 at length regarding the lesson from this.
B) This year is a leap year
(an intercalated year).
And the concept:
Although there are versions that in a leap year one says "for atonement of transgression",
but in the Chabad version we do not say it.
And on the contrary:
A leap year is simply a sublime matter –
that then there is an addition of days,
and not merely an addition,
but through this addition the year is called, according to the Torah of truth, a "complete year"61,
which is more than a simple full year.
And the addition is openly visible to all,
until it is recognizable
(and it has an influence)
even to non-Jews. For although one may not teach them the Oral Torah62,
however, since Jews have dealings with gentiles,
and in matters that concern knowing the time,
therefore one must tell them that it is a leap year.
The matter in the service of man:
That which in a leap year there is an addition of days until it is called a "complete year" –
derives from the fact that so it is in Torah and in holiness
(He looked into the Torah and created the world63),
that in such a year there is an addition of powers and influences in a manner of completeness,
therefore it is expressed in an addition of days and a "complete year".
From this is understood the general lesson in the service of man from a leap year:
Then a Jew has more powers,
and in a manner of completeness,
to perform his service. And consequently he must utilize the addition of powers to bring them from potential to actual in an addition in all matters of his service,
in his thought, speech and action,
to serve his Master.
[And this also has an influence and effect on the nations of the world –
who also become aware of the existence of a leap year,
as above].
All the more so when one is in the month of Adar
(of the leap year),
when the superiority and advantage of a leap year is more openly evident.
All the more so –
in the second Adar,
when the leap year is expressed in an action and practical halachic ramification openly
(unlike before this, one only knew that it is a leap year but there was no open action in it) –
as the Gemara says41,
that in a leap year one celebrates the holiday of Purim,
reading the Megillah and sending portions and gifts to the poor,
in the month of the second Adar
(the one close to Nissan)
because of "connecting redemption to redemption".
One sees from this that in the month of the second Adar, the quality of "connecting redemption to redemption" is expressed practically and openly, which is specifically evident in a leap year.
In a simple year, Purim
(reading the Megillah, etc.)
is also in the manner of "connecting redemption to redemption"
(Purim to Passover) –
but then there is, so to speak, no choice,
because there is only one month of Adar;
ווייל ס'איז דא נאר איין חודש אדר;
whereas in a leap year when there are two months of Adar,
the reading of the Megillah, etc., could have been in the first month of Adar,
and nevertheless the halachah is that due to "connecting redemption to redemption" it must be in the second Adar. It follows,
that in a leap year,
in the second Adar,
the matter of "connecting redemption to redemption" is expressed practically and openly.
All the more so when one is in the second Adar itself after the holiday of Purim –
when not only has one learned in Torah that it is a leap year and there must be "connecting redemption to redemption",
but Jews have already performed on the holiday of Purim a practical act of reading the Megillah,
sending portions each man to his fellow,
gifts to the poor, etc.,
and through this have demonstrated openly and practically in a practical act that their conduct is in the manner of "connecting redemption to redemption" –
as is known the superiority of a practical act,
"a great deed"64,
over mere study and knowledge,
and as our Sages said65, one does not derive halachah from study nor from a deed until they say to him a halachah for practice.
Thus after the holiday of Purim
(in a leap year)
there was a "great deed" that Jews conducted themselves in the manner of "connecting redemption to redemption" by fulfilling the reading of the Megillah, etc., on the 14th and 15th of the second Adar.
Based on the above explanation of the superiority of a leap year in general,
and in particular in the month of the second Adar,
after Purim –
it is understood that the aforementioned service of Jews on Purim of this year,
in "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at Mount Sinai with all the details thereof discussed above,
is with greater strength and vigor,
due to the addition of powers in a manner of completeness that one has in a leap year in general,
And especially –
in the matter of "connecting redemption to redemption",
which emphasizes the service and influence upon the nations of the world
(as one sees it in the redemption of Purim,
in the redemption of Passover and in the future redemption,
as above),
which is openly and practically evident in a leap year, particularly after Purim,
when Jews have already demonstrated that their practical service
(on the holiday of Purim)
was in the manner of "connecting redemption to redemption".
And through the fact that Jews conduct themselves thus below
(in the manner of "document from redemption to redemption")
as the Most High commanded them –
they cause that the Most High should also conduct Himself thus66,
as is known that "the Holy One, blessed be He...
what He does, He tells Israel to do"67,
that the Most High should also fulfill the matter of "document from redemption to redemption",
until the future redemption
(that "as in the days of your exodus from Egypt I will show you wonders"),
when it will be "and the kingdom will be Hashem's",
and before this –
at the end of the time of exile –
there should already be a semblance of this,
"and for all the children of Israel there was light in their dwellings",
and "many from the peoples of the land became Jews",
and "the fear of the Jews fell upon them".
After all the above –
the explanation of the lesson in the service of man from the days of Purim,
and particularly in this year
(a leap year) –
the lesson in the Shabbat that comes after the days of Purim is understood:
Even if it seems to one that during the days of Purim he fulfilled the service of Purim with utmost perfection,
both the matters in the line of turn from evil,
and the matters in the line of do good,
the commandments connected with Purim,
including also the service of "they fulfilled what they had already accepted",
strength and reinforcement in all matters of Torah and its commandments,
and in a manner that this also influences the nations of the world
("many from the peoples of the land became Jews", "the fear of the Jews fell upon them"),
Even if he truly fulfilled it with perfection
(because "all Jews are presumed to be fit"68),
and in a more elevated manner than during the days of Purim in previous years
(in accordance with the command of "ascend in holiness"),
and in addition with the added powers that one receives in a leap year,
and especially in the matter of "document from redemption to redemption" etc. –
Even if he fulfilled all this with perfection,
in the manner of "until he does not know",
and further ascended in holiness from the Fast of Esther to the day of Purim and from Purim to Shushan Purim –
then afterwards,
when the Shabbat after Purim comes
(when the days of Purim are elevated even higher)
one must come with greater strength and greater vigor in the aforementioned service of
(Purim –)
"they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah,
and especially since Shabbat is related to and is one thing with the giving of the Torah*68,
and consequently –
with "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah,
and reinforcement in all matters of Torah and its commandments,
and in a manner that this also influences the nations of the world
("many from the peoples of the land became Jews",
"the fear of the Jews fell upon them").
For notwithstanding all these elevations mentioned during the days of Purim,
and particularly in this year,
a leap year,
when the matter of "document from redemption to redemption" stands with emphasis and openly in the service of the children of Israel,
and this causes that also the Most High should conduct Himself thus –
on the Shabbat after Purim there is an even higher elevation in these matters,
consequently this must be expressed in the service of man, that he should add even more in the service.
And the main thing is the deed69,
as emphasized regarding Purim –
"these days are remembered and done":
There must come a strength and reinforcement with greater strength and greater vigor in "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah –
in the study of Torah and fulfillment of the commandments,
And especially in the matters connected with the time –
between Purim and Passover
("document from redemption to redemption"):
Coming from the days of Purim –
one must continue in the Purim campaign;
דארף מען ממשיך זיין אין מבצע פורים;
and going toward the festival of Passover,
and it is already within the thirty days before the festival*69 –
one must already prepare for the Passover campaign,
money for wheat and study of the laws of Passover.
And one has the powers to do all these matters in the spirit of Purim and Passover –
with joy and goodness of heart,
still standing under the influence of the days of Purim whose essence is joy,
until a joy "until he does not know";
ביז א שמחה "עד דלא ידע";
and with true freedom,
for since one prepares for the time of our freedom
(the festival of Passover),
the preparation must be of the same kind as that which one prepares for it,
that one has true freedom from all matters that cause confusion.
And simply:
Although one still stands before the time of the removal of leaven –
(in addition to that the preparation for the time of our freedom must be in a manner of freedom)
one has already nullified
(during the days of Purim)
Haman the wicked "the oppressor of all the Jews",
who was of the seed of Amalek,
the matter of pride and selfhood,
the "first
(of nations Amalek)
" of all matters of the other side and matters that cause confusion in the service of man,
As is known
(and as discussed above)
Then Amalek has the gematria of doubt,
He casts doubts into the service,
And if he cannot cast a doubt –
His essence is also coldness,
He at least casts coldness into the service,
That coldness is "more refined" than doubt. And simply:
Amalek argues to the Jew –
It is indeed true and correct that you must go do your service,
But why must you boil over it? You must guard your health –
Consequently you must do it with calmness and coolness,
And go "heel by thumb",
But you must not become heated and you must not become agitated!
One forgets however one thing –
That the calmness is connected with the coldness of Amalek! And the proof –
That when one busies oneself with his selfhood,
He begins to scream with heat,
That he is a grandson of Yitzchak,
And he brings all kinds of proofs that he is a person of virtue,
That it is written in the Zohar and in the Tanya that his inner intention is to fulfill the will of Hashem etc. etc.!
One must however know that he is Amalek has the gematria of doubt and he wants to cast doubts into the service of Hashem,
That doubt is the opposite of holiness,
Holiness is connected with certainty –
"The Certain One, His Name, so is His praise",
And not with selfhood but with acceptance of the yoke,
We will do precedes we will hear
(The content of the matter of Purim,
As above),
Even if one does not yet understand it intellectually.
And coming from the days of Purim one has the power to nullify Amalek and Haman
(From the seed of Amalek),
And one who comes to purify is aided.
And on the contrary –
One does the service with great joy,
Until a joy that permeates the body,
That one begins to dance a dance with the feet,
And in a manner of "until one does not know".
And regarding the practical it means –
That not looking at all the confusions of Amalek and Haman,
One must accept good resolutions to do in all matters of the fulfillment and strengthening of the entire Torah and His commandments
("They fulfilled what they had already accepted" at Mount Sinai),
And especially –
In all matters that my master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation, directs,
Including that which he said upon coming to America for the second time in the month of Adar Sheni of the year 5700 –
Which is related to this time,
Because that year was also a leap year
(Like this year),
And he arrived in America in the month of Adar Sheni
(Which now we are in Adar Sheni),
That "America is no different"
On one side it is indeed called by the name "America",
A different name from the names of the rest of the countries,
From which it is understood that it is indeed different from other countries;
וואס דערפון איז מובן אז ס'איז יע אנדערש פון אנדערע מדינות;
Therefore the Nasi of our generation warns,
That when it comes however to matters of Judaism,
"America is no different",
Because in every place and location in the world,
In all the 127 provinces of King Achashverosh
(The Holy One, Blessed be He –
The King Whose end and beginning are His,
As explained in Maor Einayim in the name of the Midrash),
Jews are "Yehudim",
Because they acknowledge the Holy One, Blessed be He, as the Gemara explains "Yehudi",
Therefore Jews are called "Yehudim" in the Megillah,
And as explained in the first discourse that my master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, then said on Purim in that year,
Beginning with "On that night"
[Which was reviewed at the farbrengen of the previous one].
And just as it was in the year 5700 –
So too one does the service in the year 5746,
And that which one could not accomplish in the year 5700,
One accomplishes now.
And in general –
One accomplishes the matter that "America is no different" –
Through the dissemination of Torah and the dissemination of Judaism and the dissemination of the wellsprings outward,
As the Nasi of our generation directs,
And especially at this time –
The Purim campaign,
And the Pesach campaign,
And out of true freedom and out of true joy and goodness of heart.
On this Shabbat there is also a second matter –
That it is Shabbat of Parshat Parah
(As mentioned above),
Where we just read and heard the reading of Parshat Parah in the Written Torah
(Parshat Chukat),
And afterwards read and heard the reading of the Haftarah of Parshat Parah in the words of the Prophets
(From Yechezkel).
[That the words of the Prophets are like the Oral Torah in relation to the Written Torah.
And similarly the Megillat Esther,
That in addition to that in several matters it has the advantage of "words of Torah" (Written Torah),
As our Sages said "Write me for generations",
It is also like the Oral Torah,
Because of that which the Sanhedrin accepted Esther's request "Write me for generations".
And furthermore, it is seen that on the reading of the Haftarah, one makes more blessings than on the reading of the Torah, where one makes only one blessing before and one after.
And although it was discussed earlier that, lekol larosh, Shabbat has a connection to Purim,
on the other hand, however,
Parah,
on one hand,
has a closer connection to this Shabbat than Purim,
because the Shabbat itself is Shabbat Parah,
unlike Purim, which was several days earlier,
consequently, one must arrive at contemplation and remembrance regarding it. Indeed, one needs only a light contemplation,
because the Shabbat is under the influence of Purim,
and the foods of this Shabbat were prepared "on Erev Shabbat," including during the days of Purim,
but one must still arrive at contemplation and remembrance, etc.;
מ'דארף אבער פאָרט אנקומען צו א התבוננות וזכרון וכו';
unlike regarding Parah on this Shabbat –
one only needs to hear the reading of the portion and the Haftarah,
one knows immediately
(without any contemplation)
that it is Shabbat Parah.
Furthermore:
It is known that the matter of hearing permeates a person entirely and pertains to his entire existence,
which is why the law is that "for a deaf person, one gives him his full value."
As we see in this matter
(mentioned above)
of "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at Mount Sinai
(which occurred during the days of Purim):
The entire matter of the acceptance of the Torah was specifically after this, when the Jews heard the commands of the Holy One, blessed be He.
And although there was the precedence of "we will do" over "we will hear,"
this precedence of "we will do" over "we will hear"
(in its explanation)
we will understand,
but it is understood that the "we will do" had to be after the hearing of that which the "we will do" must consist of,
not a hearing connected with understanding,
but a hearing had to be –
because hearing pertains to and encompasses all matters of man.
And regarding our matter:
On this Shabbat, one needs to arrive only at hearing the reading and the Haftarah,
and one knows immediately that it is Parah,
and since there was hearing involved –
it permeates the person entirely,
without contemplation, etc.
Just as from everything,
one must derive a lesson also from this matter of Parah.
And the lesson of Parah pertains to all Jews –
because Parah speaks about the red heifer which purified from the impurity of the dead,
and gave the ability to enter the Temple
(because one impure from a dead person may not enter there);
(ווייל א טמא מת טאר דארטן ניט אריינגיין) 86;
which, after the sin of the Tree of Knowledge,
which brought death
(and impurity of the dead)
into the world
(as will be explained),
every Jew,
even a High Priest,
has a connection to the impurity of the dead,
consequently, every Jew must arrive at the red heifer in order to become purified from the impurity of the dead,
and be able to enter the Temple.
One of the lessons of Parah –
will be understood by prefacing an explanation of the words of the Midrash on the matter of the red heifer:
It is stated in the Midrash:
"Regarding every matter that the Holy One, blessed be He, would say to Moses, He would tell him its impurity and its purity. When He reached 'Speak to the priests,' Moses said to the Master of the Universe, 'If this one becomes impure, what will be his purification?'
He did not answer him.
At that time, Moses' face became darkened.
When He reached the portion of the red heifer, the Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, etc., 'This is its purification, etc.'" Moses asked, "Is this purification?"
And the Almighty answered him,
that "It is a statute and a decree I have decreed, etc."
One must understand:
There are impurities which are more severe
(in several details)
than the impurity of the dead,
such as the impurity of a zav and the impurity of a leper:
A zav must be sent outside the two camps
(outside the Temple Mount),
and even more severe is a leper, who is sent outside the three camps
(outside Jerusalem),
unlike one impure from a dead person, who may not be only in the Camp of the Divine Presence
(in the Temple),
but in the Camp of the Levites
(the Temple Mount)
he may be;
מעג ער זיין 92;
"The zav has no purification except in a spring,"
in living waters,
unlike "the other impure ones,"
including one impure from a dead person,
"they immerse even in a mikveh" –
so why did Moses our teacher specifically regarding the impurity of the dead wonder "what will be its purification" until "his face became darkened" and he said "Is this purification?"
And after all the explanations that are said about this,
the aforementioned matter remains not understood.
And one can say the explanation of this:
The matter of death
(and impurity of the dead)
in the world
(which the red heifer comes to purify)
came from the side of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge.
As the Gemara says that "the deaths were caused by the advice of the serpent,"
"meaning they were not worthy of death, but the decree of death was decreed
(due to the sin of the Tree of Knowledge through the advice of the serpent)
upon all the descendants of Adam."
Afterwards, there are righteous ones who are above and removed from the entire concept of "the advice of the serpent" and death
(and impurity of the dead)
that comes through it. And this is the level of Moses our Teacher –
the level of wisdom,
which is above and removed from any concept of death
(which came through the sin of the Tree of Knowledge),
as it is said, "wisdom gives life."
Based on this, it is understood that Moses, from his own perspective,
from his own level,
has no connection with the physical commandment of the red heifer that comes to purify from impurity of the dead
(and he has this concept primarily in spirituality),
because his level is higher and removed from the concept of death and impurity of the dead
(which came through the sin of the Tree of Knowledge). –
Thus it is necessary to say,
whether one understands it or does not understand it,
because Moses is higher and removed from the concept of death and impurity of the dead,
consequently he has
(from his own perspective)
also no connection with the red heifer that comes to purify impurity of the dead.
And the explanation of this can be said according to what is explained
[in a "strange" discourse]
in Likkutei Torah, portion Shemini,
that there are righteous ones
(souls)
from the aspect of the hidden world,
the aspect of the Leviathan
(the great fish of the sea),
whose primary service is in spirituality,
"with intention of the heart to unify supernal unifications and in the aspect of ascents, etc.,"
unlike a second type of righteous ones
(souls)
from the aspect of the revealed world,
the aspect of the wild ox,
whose primary service is in physicality, in the fulfillment of practical commandments,
"and without this it is impossible to draw down at all,"
unlike the righteous ones from the aspect of the Leviathan,
they draw down the influences through unifications and ascents, etc.
And based on this, he explains in that discourse that which Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, being in the cave for thirteen years, "certainly could not fulfill in practice several practical commandments, for they were sustained only by carob and water that was created for them, thus he did not fulfill eating matzah on Passover, and Kiddush on wine, and the etrog and sukkah, etc.":
According to the revealed aspect, the explanation is simple,
that "one who is compelled, the Merciful One exempts him,"
and since he hid due to the decree of the government and danger to life,
he is exempt from the fulfillment of the commandments;
איז ער פטור מקיום המצוות;
but in that discourse, he explains this according to the inner aspect of the matters,
that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai is from the righteous ones of the aspect of the Leviathan. "Therefore Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai did not fulfill while in the cave several practical commandments...
rather everything was in spirituality, etc.,"
through unifications and ascents.
And that which he certainly fulfilled the commandments physically when not in the cave –
it can be said,
that this was secondary,
and the primary
(also when not in the cave)
for him was the fulfillment in spirituality through unifications and ascents,
and at the time he had to be in the cave where he could not fulfill the commandments physically –
only the primary remained
(the fulfillment of the commandments in spirituality).
And the question in this is known,
that the Torah "is not in heaven,"
and the fulfillment of the 613 commandments must be in actual deed, etc., etc. –
whatever the explanation in this may be,
whether it is because "all of Israel are guarantors for one another,"
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai fulfilled the physical commandments through the fulfillment of these commandments by the rest of Israel,
or another explanation –
there is no need to elaborate on this,
since these discourses do not deal with this.
Regarding our matter,
we see from this discourse in Likkutei Torah,
that there are souls that, from their own perspective, do not have such a connection with the fulfillment of the physical commandments,
rather their service is
(primarily)
in spirituality.
And it can be said that in a similar manner, this applies regarding Moses our Teacher in relation to the commandment of the red heifer –
that since he was above and removed from the concept of death and impurity of the dead
(which came through the sin of the Tree of Knowledge),
he, from his own perspective, did not have such a connection with the physical commandment of the red heifer that comes to purify from impurity of the dead,
and he has this concept primarily in spirituality.
A similar example to this matter is also found regarding the commandment of Purim, of which we now come
(therefore this example is also brought):
It is known in the annals of Israel,
that there were found Jews whose ancestors were exiled in the First Temple exile,
who observed all matters of Torah and commandments except for those matters that were added after the First Temple
(because they did not know of them, being in exile far from the rest of the Children of Israel),
such as, for example, the matter of Purim,
for since their ancestors were not in the provinces of King Achashverosh
[which is according to the opinion that Achashverosh was king only over "half the world",
not like the second opinion that he was king over the entire globe],
consequently, the decree of Haman did not apply to them,
and they did not know of it at all,
and consequently, the miracle of Purim also did not occur with them.
And the dispute among the later authorities is known regarding this, whether these Jews also need to celebrate the holiday of Purim
(after they became aware of it),
or not,
since with their ancestors there was no decree of Haman and consequently also not the miracle of Purim.
From this we see that there are Jews who have no connection
(from their own perspective)
to the commandment of Purim –
not only according to the opinion of the later authorities that they need not celebrate the holiday of Purim
(even after they become aware of it);
(אויך לאחרי ווי זיי דערוויסן זיך דערפון);
but even according to the opinion of the later authorities that they indeed must celebrate Purim,
because they too were present at the giving of the Torah
(as it states in Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer),
when the entire Torah was given to all Jews,
even what a veteran student will innovate in the future,
including the commandment of Purim –
this is not because they have a connection from their own perspective to the miracle of Purim,
for the miracle of Purim explicitly did not occur with them,
rather one must arrive at a special teaching that they too must fulfill the commandment of Purim because all other Jews fulfill it,
And even after the special teaching,
it is understood that their obligation in the commandment of Purim is not comparable to the obligation of those who were present at that miracle. This is evident from what the Gemara emphasizes regarding the matter of Purim itself,
that "the main miracle was through them
(through the women)
"
" 113
[and the precision in this is known, that the language of the Gemara is "that they too were in that miracle" –
"implying that they are secondary"),
from this we see that there is a difference whether one was present at that miracle or not.
Regarding our matter, from this we see that there are Jews who do not have such a connection
(from their own perspective)
to the commandment of Purim.
And every matter begins from the Torah –
we see an example of this also in the Torah regarding Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and other righteous individuals from the aspect of Leviathan,
as explained in the aforementioned discourse in Likkutei Torah,
that there are souls that, from their own perspective, have no connection to physical practical commandments.
And thus we can explain regarding the aforementioned Jews who were not in the miracle of Purim.
And regarding our matter:
Based on the above,
that Moses, from his own perspective, is above and removed from any matter of death and impurity of a corpse
(which comes through the sin of the Tree of Knowledge)
and has no connection
(from his own perspective)
to the physical commandment of the Red Heifer,
we can explain the words of the Midrash regarding Moses' question specifically concerning impurity of a corpse
(and not concerning impurity of a zav or a leper):
Because Moses, from his own perspective
(the aspect of Chochmah –
wisdom gives life)
is above and removed from any matter of death of corpse impurity,
in his level there is no such reality –
therefore, when he heard that there is a Jew who becomes impure with corpse impurity
(because of which he cannot enter the Sanctuary),
to which Moses, in his level, has no connection whatsoever,
in him,
the wisdom of holiness,
was aroused the wonder and question "with what shall his purification be",
for the entire reality of this impurity is a novelty in the level of Moses,
and he does not understand at all how such impurity comes into the world,
and therefore when he hears that there is such impurity in the world –
he cannot understand "with what shall his purification be".
However, regarding a leper –
we find regarding Moses himself that "his hand was leprous, etc.",
therefore no question arose in him as it did regarding corpse impurity, which is entirely removed from him.
And although there are certain details, the impurity of a leper is more severe than the impurity of a dead body –
it is not relevant what is light and what is severe,
but only what is relevant is that in the level of Moses there is no such reality of death and impurity of a dead body
(unlike a leper,
as above).
And this is like a parable:
There is no reality of dry water –
even though there are bitter waters and the like.
And the reason why Moses was troubled and it was relevant to him "with what shall his purification be" even though he, from his level, has no connection to it –
is because Moses was a faithful shepherd of the children of Israel,
and "six hundred thousand footmen of the people that I am in their midst",
even "the footmen of the people"
(the lowest level),
is connected to "I"
(the highest level)
of Moses our teacher,
therefore Moses our teacher is concerned with every matter that affects Jews.
And therefore he is troubled when he hears that among a Jew there is a deficiency of impurity of a dead body, because of which he cannot enter the Temple
(although the deficiency is not relevant to the level of Moses),
and therefore he is troubled "with what shall his purification be".
And furthermore:
Moses our teacher
(intellect and wisdom of holiness)
cannot at all understand how such a type of impurity comes into the world
(because his level is above the matter of death and impurity of a dead body) –
and regarding this one must arrive at "a statute I have enacted, a decree I have decreed",
as explained in the Rambam that the entire matter of impurity and purity is not something understood by intellect,
but rather it is a decree of the verse,
a statute.
That is, when Moses sees that there is a Jew who is impure from a dead body and cannot enter the Temple,
even if he has fulfilled all the commandments,
from the term "connection" and "attachment",
furthermore:
the very fact that he does not enter the Temple while being impure from a dead body,
is also because he conducts himself according to the command of God –
but he lacks the matter of entering the Temple because he is impure from a dead body –
it affects Moses our teacher
(even though from his level Moses is above this matter)
and he is troubled "with what shall his purification be"!
Parenthetical remark:
An example of this is found, unfortunately, also in our generation:
There can be a Jew who perhaps fulfills all the commandments,
he puts on tefillin and observes Shabbat and fulfills all the other commandments,
but he lacks one commandment –
the commandment that every Jew must study the entire Torah in all its parts,
as the Alter Rebbe ruled as halacha in Hilchot Talmud Torah,
and says that "the sages of truth said that every soul needs for its rectification to engage in Pardes according to what it can grasp and know,
and whoever can grasp and know much and was lazy and did not grasp and know except a little must come back in reincarnation until he grasps and knows all that his soul can grasp of knowledge of the Torah, whether in the simple meanings of the laws or in the hints, homilies, and secrets, etc.".
And this is indeed an amazing thing:
In general, a Jew has free choice how to conduct himself. But when it comes to studying the entire Torah,
and due to "the evil of his choice" he chooses not to study all parts of the Torah,
he goes around and claims that "this teaching is pleasant and this is not pleasant" and he does not want to study it,
this subject in Torah is too high for him,
and that subject is too low for him,
[Furthermore:
even if he is compelled] –
they tell him,
that he has no choice or free will in this,
and he will have to come down once and again and again,
until he will finally study...
the Chassidut of the Alter Rebbe!
Does a Jew have the audacity to go around saying,
that this subject in Torah one must study,
and that subject one need not study –
when there is an explicit ruling that every Jew must study the entire Torah,
and if not –
they send him down again below until he will study the entire Torah!
And it has already been ruled in the laws of Talmud Torah of the old Rebbe in the name of the wise ones of truth,
and all Jews accept this,
until it is known that even the opponents in that generation were impressed when they saw the laws of Talmud Torah, not knowing who the author was
(as is known that the first time it was printed without the author's name),
and they gave an approbation on it, as it is printed in the first edition
(which is why it was indeed accepted in all circles,
not only among Chassidim),
which approbation applies to the entire laws of Talmud Torah,
including the law in the name of the wise ones of truth that every Jew must study the entire Torah,
and if he does not study it, he must descend again and again!
And after all this and all the generations,
there is a Jew in our generation,
who does not reach the ankles of all those mentioned above,
and has the audacity to oppose a part of the Torah and say that one need not study it!...
With this he goes against the Torah of truth! Against "the truth of Hashem is forever"! Against the Essence of the Infinite One!
And in truth, one should not publicize at all that there is such a reality that there exists in the world one who opposes the Torah of truth and "the truth of Hashem is forever",
due to the law in Halacha,
that one must not study or mention certain forbidden matters –
so why must one go and print and publicize that there is such a wild reality in the world?
Consequently, one must know that one should not speak about it and publicize it, etc.
On the other hand –
however, the law is that the court must study and know about the forbidden matters in order to guard against them. Consequently, one must know that since we are still before the purification of the red heifer,
or after the red heifer but before the [portion of] "the month",
and before the time of "and the spirit of impurity I will remove from the earth" –
there is a reality of a Jew at the edge of the world,
"thrust to the edge of the heavens",
who conducts himself in a wild manner.
And one must know that Moses our teacher also cares about such a Jew who has touched a matter opposite to life –
"with what shall his purification be",
how does such a wild thing come into the world and "with what shall his purification be"?!
How does such a wild thing come about that someone should say "this tradition is pleasant" and "this tradition is not pleasant" and one need not study it?!
And the only answer that one has for this is –
that "a statute I have enacted, a decree I have decreed".
And consequently,
when Moses our teacher hears that there is such a reality in the world,
even if that Jew fulfills all the commandments,
but he lacks one single commandment,
that he does not study the entire Torah,
or he lacks the matter of entering the Temple due to his being impure from a corpse –
Moses cannot rest and he cares –
"with what shall his purification be".
Thus ends the parenthetical statement.
Afterwards, the Midrash adds further – that
(when "the Holy One, blessed be He, did not answer" his question "with what shall his purification be")
"the face of Moses darkened":
To such an extent does the deficiency of a Jew affect him
(who cannot enter the Temple due to impurity from a corpse)
that this touches and causes a change in the appearance of his face. At first glance –
it would be more fitting to say that Moses did not understand it intellectually,
in his Chochmah, Binah, and Daat and the like,
what does this have to do with his facial appearance?
Nevertheless, the Midrash emphasizes that "his face darkened",
that this affected his face,
his innerness,
this affected him in his soul and his innerness,
to such an extent that this causes a change in the appearance of his face.
And this causes not merely a change in the appearance of his face –
rather "his face darkened":
Instead of what was in Moses our teacher, "the wisdom of a man illuminates his face",
and "the face of Moses was like the face of the sun" –
the deficiency in a Jew
(of impurity from a corpse which does not allow him to enter the Temple)
caused that "his face darkened",
the opposite of "the wisdom of a man illuminates his face" and "the face of the sun".
And more deeply:
Since in a Jew there is the deficiency
(of impurity from a corpse which does not permit one to enter the Temple),
not only does this bother Moses our teacher
(to the extent that it caused a change in the appearance of his face),
but this very thing proves that in Moses our teacher there is the same matter in the most subtle of subtle ways.
And it can be said that this is also hinted at in the expression "his face darkened":
Commentators explain that "nitkarkemu
(his face)
" is a red appearance. For red is connected to the Other Side –
in the aspect of Esau,
"this red, red one etc. therefore his name was called Edom",
the grandfather of Amalek. And superficially it is not understood:
what connection does Moses have with Amalek,
on the contrary: Amalek
(the intellect of the Other Side)
is the opponent of Moses
(the intellect of holiness)
–
140 –
how is it fitting that because of a matter that pertains to another Jew
(and not to Moses in his own right)
that Moses our teacher should become "nitkarkemu panav",
a red appearance,
which indicates the aspect of Esau and Amalek?!
And we can say the explanation of this –
with an introduction of the well-known story of the Mitteler Rebbe:
The Mitteler Rebbe once conducted "yechidus",
and in the middle of the yechidus the Mitteler Rebbe stopped receiving people,
even though many more people were waiting to enter for yechidus.
Afterwards he explained:
"When chassidim enter for yechidus and reveal the inner blemishes of the hearts,
each person according to what he is,
behold, every matter that the speaker tells, one must find in oneself in the finest and finest of the finest,
and it is impossible to give the questioner a true correction and order until one first corrects it in oneself, and only then can one give advice and an order for correction." But if he cannot find the matter in himself
(even in the finest of the finest),
he does not know "with what shall be his correction
(his purification)",
and he cannot give the other the correction.
Thus it happened –
the Mitteler Rebbe explained –
that someone came to him who asked for a correction regarding a terrifying matter, and the Mitteler Rebbe could not find it in himself even in the finest of the finest,
consequently he could not give the other a correction. And on the other hand –
since that person
(by Divine Providence)
came to ask him about this,
it is a clear thing that he has the matter in himself in the finest of the finest
(because if not, he would not have heard it from the other),
for he is the leader of the generation who must provide all matters and corrections for the people of his generation,
and since he
(the Mitteler Rebbe)
could not find it in himself,
he thought that his self-accounting was perhaps not complete. "And this thought –
the Mitteler Rebbe said –
shook the depth of the point of my soul to return to God from within and a deep heart",
therefore he stopped from yechidus and prayed etc.
And we can say,
that just as it was regarding the Moses our teacher of the generation of the Mitteler Rebbe –
the Mitteler Rebbe –
so it is also regarding Moses our teacher in his generation:
"the difficult matter they shall bring to Moses" and he needed to give a correction for it,
and in order to give a correction for it he first needed to find and correct the matter
(in the finest of the finest)
in himself.
Thus when Moses our teacher heard that a Jew had become impure with the impurity of a corpse,
he asked "with what shall be his purification
(his correction)
" and he could not find a correction for it,
for he could not find the matter in himself even in the finest of the finest,
because he was above and completely removed from the matter of death and impurity of a corpse
(as above),
and one cannot give another a correction unless one finds the matter
(in the finest of the finest)
in oneself and one corrects it.
But on the other hand –
since he heard about it,
it certainly has a connection with him
(in the finest of the finest),
for Moses is the faithful shepherd and "the difficult matter they shall bring to Moses",
and he must provide all matters and corrections to the Jews.
Thus since Moses could not find it in himself. Therefore "the face of Moses became nitkarkemu"
(the opposite of "the wisdom of a man illuminates his face" and "the face of the sun"),
he was distressed by that which such a reality exists in the world and that he could not find it and correct it in himself in the finest of the finest
(similar to how the Mitteler Rebbe was distressed and he prayed etc. about that which he heard a thing that he could not find and correct in himself in the finest of the finest).
And based on this
(Now the deficiency of a second must be with the Nasi in the finest of the finest)
It is necessary to add and explain that which "his face became darkened,"
In a red appearance –
Which one can say that this is the matter of the impurity of a corpse in the finest of the finest with Moses –
In the aspect of Esau and Amalek
(Red)
In the finest of the finest,
In beautification of a commandment or the ultimate beautification of a commandment and so forth.
And through the arousal from below of Moses our teacher
(That "his face became darkened"),
There was drawn from above
(From the Supernal One)
A revelation and a new light of the saying of the portion of the Red Heifer
[Like the portion of the Second Passover which came through the arousal from below of the Jews,
And the portion of Inheritances through the arousal from below of the daughters of Zelophehad] –
That until then Moses
(From the aspect of his service until then)
Had not heard the portion
(Even though "Moses received the Torah from Sinai") –
The commandment of the Red Heifer which purifies from the impurity of a corpse,
And gives the possibility that one impure from a corpse can afterwards enter the Holy Temple.
According to the above, one will understand one of the instructions that is learned from the Sabbath of the portion of the Red Heifer:
Since the aforementioned story
(Regarding Moses' question "With what shall be his purification...
His face became darkened etc.")
Is told in the Torah
(In the Midrash),
It is understood that from this there is an instruction for every individual,
And especially when one stands on the Sabbath of the portion of the Red Heifer.
And the lesson from this also has a connection to the days of Purim
(Which the Sabbath of the portion of the Red Heifer is also the Sabbath after Purim):
Just as Moses conducted himself,
That at the time he heard that there is a Jew who became impure with the impurity of a corpse and therefore cannot enter the Holy Temple –
Even though he, from his own perspective, had no connection to this –
It bothered him "With what shall be his purification" until "his face became darkened" and he brought about a new drawing down of the Red Heifer which purifies from the impurity of a corpse –
So too one finds in the conduct of Mordechai,
Who "Mordechai in his generation was equivalent to Moses in his generation,"
And in connection to the days of Purim,
Which then was "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah through Moses our teacher
[And note from the saying of our Sages of blessed memory 1485 "Mordechai from the Torah, from where? As it is written 'Mor Dror,'
And we translate 'Mira Dakhya'"]:
It is known the saying of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, of blessed memory, regarding that which is stated in the Megillah that "and Mordechai told him all that had happened to him,"
For ostensibly Mordechai could have thought to himself,
That these things did not happen to him,
But only to those who benefited from the feast of that wicked one,
As the reality indeed was that Mordechai had no connection to this –
Nevertheless, it is stated in the Megillah that he told "all that had happened to him,"
Because this affected him as if it had happened to him himself!
And from this it is also understood the instruction from this for every individual:
At the time one hears or one sees an undesirable thing regarding a Jew,
For example:
That a Jew is in a state opposite to purity because he has touched something of "the opposite of life" and because of this he cannot enter the "Holy Temple" and so forth –
One must know that,
Since one heard about this through Divine Providence,
Even if one has no connection oneself to this undesirable thing –
It is relevant to him and it must bother him just as if it had happened to him himself,
"That had happened to him,"
Until in a manner of "his face became darkened,"
It affects his innermost being! And he must do all that is incumbent upon him
(Just as he does for himself)
To see that the other should become pure and be able to enter the Holy Temple.
And based on this, it is understood the additional instruction that comes from the Sabbath of the portion of the Red Heifer regarding the instruction of that which it is the Sabbath after Purim
(As discussed above at length):
Even after one already stands in the Sabbath after Purim,
When all the matters of Purim stand in a more elevated manner,
And in one's own service one has revealed all these matters of Purim to the ultimate perfection,
In a more elevated manner than it was during the days of Purim,
And out of joy and goodness of heart etc. –
Nevertheless, since it is still before the time when "and the spirit of impurity I will remove from the earth,"
It is still possible that there are other Jews in the world who are in a state opposite to purity.
He has the directive from the aforementioned Midrash regarding the portion of Parah –
that even if he himself stands in the ultimate state of perfection,
the situation of another Jew must trouble him,
it must trouble him that the other stands in a state opposite to purity and cannot enter the "Sanctuary," just as if it had happened to him himself,
"asher karehu"!
Even if the other has fulfilled all six hundred and thirteen commandments,
and he lacks only the matter of entering the Sanctuary –
this must also trouble him with full force,
and he must do all the matters to ensure that the other becomes pure and can enter the Sanctuary.
And with this one must know,
that after Moses our teacher
(and Mordechai)
opened the way and conducted himself in this manner –
it is now already easy for every Jew to conduct himself in this manner,
for it was already established for all generations through Moses our teacher. And especially since he is Moses our teacher –
the leader,
teacher and educator of every Jew,
consequently, his conduct is a guide and a giving of strength for every Jew.
And we have the promise that when there will only be "I have toiled," there will surely be "and I have found,"
and "one who comes to purify is assisted."
Through the fact that Jews will demonstrate that they are troubled,
and they do all that is dependent on them to purify a Jew who still stands in a state opposite to purity and cannot enter the Sanctuary –
they will draw down from above the matter of the "Red Heifer" and purification from the impurity of the dead
(as we read in the reading from the Written Torah of the portion of Parah), and
(as we read in the Haftarah)
"And I will sprinkle upon you pure waters, and you shall be purified from all your impurities,"
until the conclusion of the Haftarah) –
"I, the Lord, have spoken and I will do it,"
so that from speech it is drawn into actual deed,
so that that Jew becomes pure and then enters the Sanctuary,
And the deed is greater than the doer –
through this one causes that one oneself also enters the Sanctuary,
In the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah.
Discourse (in the manner of a talk)
beginning with "This is the statute of the Torah."
It is also customary to study a verse from the weekly portion together with the commentary of Rashi,
a topic in the notes of the father on the Zohar,
and a topic in the daily study session of the Rambam.
Regarding a Rashi in our portion, we will dwell on one of the Rashi commentaries that was raised
(according to the suggestion that the audience should themselves raise a Rashi),
as has already been printed in the booklets –
a topic in Rashi in our portion that requires explanation according to the simple meaning,
which is also connected to Rashi in the portion of Tetzaveh and in the portion of Shemini
(the portion after this one):
In our portion on the verse "the breast of the waving and the thigh of the uplifting,"
Rashi dwells on "the waving, the uplifting" and explains –
"He moves forward and back,
raises and lowers."
Regarding this, Rashi also explains in other places where the two terms "uplifting" and "waving" are brought –
earlier in the portion of Tetzaveh and later in the portion of Shemini –
but with several variations from place to place. One must understand the reason for the variations,
along with several other questions –
as already explained and printed in detail in the booklets,
consequently, we will not repeat it now,
and everyone can look in there themselves and see the questions.
We will only repeat one point:
In the portion of Shemini
(on "the thigh of the uplifting and the breast of the waving"),
after Rashi explains that "waving is moving forward and back,
uplifting is raising and lowering,"
Rashi adds:
"And why did the verse separate them, uplifting for the thigh and waving for the breast –
we do not know,
for both involve raising and waving."
One must understand:
The same question "why did the verse separate them, uplifting for the thigh and waving for the breast" arises earlier in our portion
(the portion of Tzav) –
so why does Rashi not dwell on this in the portion of Tetzaveh,
or at least in our portion,
and he waits until the portion of Shemini?
Along with several other questions –
as brought in the booklets
(as above) –
and as will be explained below.
In the notes of the father on the Zohar of our portion, he dwells on what is stated in the Zohar "many lights were created before the world was created,"
and the answer is –
seven lights,
"the light of Torah,
the light of Gehinnom,
the light of the Garden of Eden,
the light of the Throne of Glory,
the light of the Holy Temple,
the light of repentance,
the light of the Messiah,"
and the father explains this with the letters of Kabbalah.
And in the continuation of the matter, he also brings what is stated in Yalkut Shimoni Shoftim regarding Sisera. And according to the explanation there, it emerges that in Sisera there is a thing and its opposite:
On one side, Sisera is something, for he is related to Amalek –
opposite of Moses
the knowledge of idolatry,
and therefore he has a beard
(as explained in Likkutei Levi Yitzchak there),
and on the other hand, the idolatry here is only in the intellect,
there is no knowledge in the grave,
and a eunuch is
(most)
of the letters of Sisera,
and a eunuch does not have a beard
(only Sisera had a beard because "he has one more than a eunuch").
And so forth.
He does not, however, explain what is the lesson from this in the service of man. And as will be explained below.
The Rambam study portion of this day –
the Shabbat after Purim –
is in the laws of prayer, chapters 2,
3 and 4.
For although one has no choice as to which portion one should study each day,
because this is determined according to the division of three chapters per day –
nevertheless, everything is with Divine Providence
(according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov* ),
one must say that today's Rambam study portion has a connection to the day when one studies this portion –
the Shabbat after Purim
(when there is an elevation in Purim).
All the more so when it is not about a simple thing in the world
(for every thing in the world is with Divine Providence),
but rather about a matter in Torah,
this is certainly with Divine Providence,
and all the more so a matter in the laws of the Torah,
the book of the Rambam
(whose subject is "laws of laws"),
and especially a study of laws
(the book of the Rambam)
which has been disseminated throughout the Jewish diaspora –
there is certainly a lesson from the connection of the laws in today's study portion with the day.
As is known, in the Torah itself, halachah has an advantage over pilpul,
because halachah determines the actual conduct in this physical world according to the supernal will,
unlike pilpul, which is opinions one way and opinions the other way. It is not necessarily connected with an actual halachah. It is indeed "these and those are the words of the living God,"
and both opinions are true,
but halachah is an even higher level –
the level of absolute truth.
And the advantage of halachah is regarding both modes in pilpul:
There is pilpul that comes after the study of the halachah –
the study of Torah in the aspect of "magnify the Torah and make it glorious,"
"expound and receive reward." For even regarding this mode of pilpul, halachah has the aforementioned advantage.
And all the more so that halachah has an advantage over the second mode in pilpul –
which comes before the study of the halachah,
the pilpul one way and the other that one must have in order to thereafter be able to rise to decide and rule a halachah according to one opinion. And it is understood from this as well,
that not everyone who studies pilpul can rule an actual halachah and be a halachic authority:
one can study pilpul even when one is only bar mitzvah,
but in order to rule a halachah, one must have several conditions in knowledge of Torah and in age,
one must be forty years old etc.
Thus it is understood that halachah is a higher level than pilpul that precedes the halachah.
On the other hand, however, it is understood,
that halachah pertains to all Jews. And all Jews must study halachah –
regardless of their age or their knowledge in Torah –
as emphasized in the introduction of the Rambam to his book "laws of laws,"
that this is "for the young and for the old."
Thus it is understood,
that certainly there is a lesson from the connection of the laws in today's Rambam study portion with the time
(Shabbat after Purim).
And as will be explained below.
Here is the place to arouse and encourage regarding the various gatherings that will take place in the coming days.
And as is customary,
all those gathered here are included in the celebrations –
by giving a physical item,
a beverage,
from the gathering,
and some of the beverage is distributed to several of those present here,
as representatives of all the rest of those present,
through which this current gathering becomes a beginning for the celebrations that will take place in the coming days,
And from this Shabbat –
from which all days are blessed,
including the auspicious days when the celebration takes place on the night after this Shabbat,
and also the celebration that takes place on a weekday after the following Shabbat.
Presumably, those who provided the beverage will now approach,
and they will say "L'chaim,"
and afterwards distribute a portion of the beverage to those present here,
and the remainder –
for their gathering,
Melaveh Malkah and celebration.
May it be His will that the unity of Jews will further increase in the unity of "one nation in the land," through one Torah together with "G-d is One and His Name is One,"
for "His Name" is also connected with Jews –
because they sanctify His Name.
And this will be a preparation close to the true and complete redemption,
when there will be the perfection of the nation –
one nation;
עם אחד;
together with the perfection of the Torah –
the entire Torah,
as discussed above, the ruling in the laws of Torah study that every Jew must learn the entire Torah,
and one of the ways for this is also through the study of the book Mishneh Torah by the Rambam,
which is "a compilation of the entire Oral Torah,"
"a person reads the Written Torah first and afterwards reads this and knows from it the entire Oral Torah and does not need to read another book in between";
"אדם קורא בתושב"כ תחלה ואח"כ קורא בזה ויודע ממנו תושבע"פ כולה ואינו צריך לקרות ספר אחר ביניהם" 179;
together with the perfection of the land –
the perfection of the Land of Israel,
all the more so from this, that then there will be the perfection of the entire land,
meaning the entire world
[as is known that "land" can have two meanings:
"land" in relation to "heavens" –
it means only land and not heavens;
מיינט נאר ארץ און ניט שמים;
however, when it says "land" without qualification (not in relation to "heavens"),
as in the verse "the whole earth is full of His glory,"
it means the entire world (including heavens and all matters that were created in the creation of the world) ].
And in the perfection of the land,
the Land of Israel,
there will be "may our eyes behold Your return to Zion with mercy" –
"the Sanctuary, O L-rd, which Your hands established,"
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach.

A general note on this matter that Rashi explains in our portion
(and in Parshat Tetzaveh and in Parshat Shemini)
that "tenufah" means "moving back and forth" and "terumah" means "raising and lowering":
It is not necessary to say that every time the Torah uses the term "tenufah" it means only "moving back and forth"
(and not "raising and lowering")
and every time it says "terumah" it means only "raising and lowering"
(and not "moving back and forth").
Rather, it is logical to say that specifically when both terms appear together
(in one matter)
in relation to each other,
then the Torah intends to specify that "tenufah" means only "moving back and forth" and "terumah" only "raising and lowering";
דעמולט מיינט די תורה מפרט זיין אז "תנופה" מיינט נאר "מוליך ומביא" און "תרומה" נאר "מעלה ומוריד";
but when only one term appears by itself
("tenufah" or "terumah"),
then it can sometimes mean both things
(both "moving back and forth" and "raising and lowering").
That is, when only the term "tenufah" appears by itself, it is a general term that includes both "tenufah"
("moving back and forth")
and "terumah"
("raising and lowering"),
only that within this itself, "tenufah" is more emphasized.
And similarly, when "terumah" appears by itself,
it is a general term that includes both "terumah" and "tenufah",
only that within this itself, "terumah" is more emphasized;
נאר אין דעם גופא שטייט מער בהדגשה "תרומה";
however, when they appear in relation to each other –
then each of them is a specific term:
"tenufah" means only "moving back and forth" and "terumah" means only "raising and lowering".
And similarly, how this is regarding the terms "heavens" and "earth"
(as above, section 28):
When "heavens" appears in relation to "earth" –
then "heavens" means only heavens,
and "earth" means only earth;
און ארץ מיינט נאר ארץ;
but when only one term appears by itself,
as in "the whole earth is full of His glory" where "earth" appears in relation to the Holy One, blessed be He,
then it is a general term that includes the entire world,
both earth and heavens,
only that within this itself, "earth" is more emphasized
(therefore it says "the whole earth is full of His glory").
And similarly, when only the term "heavens" appears
(not in relation to "earth"),
it includes also earth
(only that in this, "heavens" is more emphasized).
And based on this, one can explain the meaning of "heavens" and "earth" in many verses –
that when one term appears alone –
it includes both heavens and earth. But when both terms, heavens and earth, appear in relation to each other,
the Torah comes to say that "heavens" means only heavens and "earth" means only earth.
For example:
On the verse "The Lord God of the heavens" Rashi explains:
"And He did not say 'and God of the earth,'
and above He said...
'God of the heavens and God of the earth...'
'When He took me from my father's house, He was God of the heavens and not God of the earth,'
'for the inhabitants of the world did not recognize Him and His name was not familiar in the land,'"
and afterwards "I made Him familiar among the creatures" and He became "God of the heavens and God of the earth" –
because there Abraham himself changes and says one time "God of the heavens" and a second time "God of the heavens and God of the earth,"
this is a proof that the term "heavens" is specifically heavens and not earth and the term "earth" is specifically earth and not heavens;
איז דאס א הוכחה אז דער לשון "שמים" איז בדוקא שמים און ניט ארץ און דער לשון "ארץ" איז בדוקא ארץ און ניט שמים;
however, in other places where the two terms do not stand in relation to each other –
each term includes both concepts.
And likewise regarding the two measures "eiphah" and "hin,"
that when they stand in relation to each other, "eiphah" is a measure for dry [substances] and "hin" is a measure for liquid,
as Rashi explains;
ווי רש"י איז מפרש 186;
but when each measure stands on its own, it can be a general measure that includes both concepts,
both a measure for dry [substances] and a measure for liquid.
And based on this, it is understood why Rashi sometimes explains the meaning of the measure "eiphah" and "hin" and sometimes he does not explain at all –
because specifically when they stand in relation to each other, Rashi needs to explain what one adds relative to the other,
however, when they stand separately, each measure is a general measure that is both a measure for dry [substances] and a measure for liquid.
And an example of this is also found in halachah:
The name "Taharot" is both a general name for an entire order among the six orders of the Mishnah,
and also a specific name for one tractate
(within the order of Taharot itself).
And the meaning of "Taharot" in each place depends on what it stands with:
When "Taharot" stands in relation to the tractates Nega'im,
Yadayim,
Oktzin and the like
(which are specific tractates in the order of Taharot) –
it means the specific tractate of Taharot;
מיינט עס די מסכת פרטית פון טהרות;
but when it does not stand in relation to the other tractates –
it can mean the order of Taharot
(which includes within it many tractates).
And likewise we find regarding the name "star":
"Star" is both a name that includes all stars,
each of the specific stars having a specific name,
"to all of them He gives names";
"לכולם שמות יקרא" 189;
and "star" is also the specific name of a specific star.
And the meaning of "star" in each place depends on what it stands with:
When it stands in relation to the moon
(as in the verse –
"and the lesser light to rule the night and the stars"),
it simply means the general name that includes all stars
(not a specific star);
(ניט קיין כוכב פרטי);
however, when it stands in relation to the other seven planets,
each with its specific name,
it means the specific star that is called "star."
And likewise it is understandable in our matter regarding "tenufah" and "terumah,"
that when they stand on their own, each of them is a general term that includes both things,
and only when both terms stand together,
"tenufah" means "bringing forward and back" and "terumah" –
"raising up and lowering down."
And based on this, the difference is understood, that sometimes Rashi explains the meaning of "tenufah" and "terumah"
(as in our parshah,
in Parshas Tetzaveh and in Parshas Shemini),
and sometimes Rashi does not explain it at all –
because specifically when they stand together,
Rashi needs to explain what one term adds upon the other,
however, when they stand separately, each term includes both concepts
(both "bringing forward and back" and "raising up and lowering down"),
therefore Rashi does not need to explain at all.
Regarding the precise points and variations in this Rashi in our parshah relative to Rashi in Parshas Tetzaveh and in Parshas Shemini,
as printed in the collections
(including the precise point why Rashi explains only in Parshas Shemini "why did the text separate them, terumah in the thigh and tenufah in the breast, we do not know that both involve raising and waving") –
the aforementioned writer himself brought that there are variations in the manuscripts and printed editions of Rashi,
including also that in several editions the commentary in Parshas Shemini is in half-square brackets. And when one will examine the various manuscripts and printed editions, one will certainly find more variations in Rashi.
Therefore it is understood,
that before one goes to explain the understanding of the matter –
one must first clarify the variations in texts and versions in Rashi,
which itself can resolve and remove several questions,
and afterwards one can explain the questions that still remain.
And as an introduction:
When one finds a variation from a "typesetter" –
one cannot simply dismiss it and say that it is merely ignorance,
and certainly one cannot say that he made the variation intentionally –
because first of all, "all Jews are presumed to be of kosher lineage,"
and certainly the printers and "typesetters,"
whose work was once called "the holy craft,"
as we see in old books,
that at the end of the book it is written the name of so-and-so son of so-and-so who was engaged in the holy craft in the printing of this book. Thus from this one understands the awe and fear and trembling and sweat with which a printer and a "typesetter" approached the printing of his book!
And therefore one cannot simply dismiss a variation of a typesetter or of a printer,
and say that it is simply so,
or intentionally, heaven forbid,
rather one must first find the reason and basis for his variation –
whether he saw so in another manuscript,
or he had proof that this is not the language of Rashi but the language of the copyist and so forth,
and then one can judge whether there is a basis for this variation or not.
And after this introduction,
one must clarify all the variations in the manuscripts and printed editions of Rashi,
and surely one will endeavor in this –
and after this clarification,
one will be able to approach the understanding of Rashi himself.
From this "wine of the Torah" in this Rashi:
The general concept of the sacrifice relates to the concept of "and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him,"
as explained in the glosses of the Torah that "this is not atonement for his soul but to atone before the Lord to be a pleasing satisfaction to his Maker."
And in this "and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him" itself, there are two aspects of service –
"raising and lowering" and "bringing and taking":
"Raising and lowering" refers to his service with himself –
that both when he stands at the height of the level
("raising")
and when he stands at the low point of the situation
("lowering"),
there must be with him the "and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him,"
"to atone before the Lord to be a pleasing satisfaction to his Maker."
"Bringing and taking" refers to his service with the environment –
that this "and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him,"
"to atone before the Lord to be a pleasing satisfaction to his Maker" he must "bring" and extend
(not only within himself, but)
also in his environment.
And through that which he does so upon
("bringing")
with another and with the environment around him –
it becomes "and taking,"
an elevation is opened up within him,
as the words of our sages, "much I learned from my teachers and from my friends more than from my teachers," but "from my students more than all of them,"
and certainly more than what he receives from his own intellect.
From this there is also a lesson in the matter of educating another,
and especially the education of the young boys and young girls,
including also in this the aforementioned lesson of the two aspects in the service of the sacrifices –
"raising and lowering,"
"bringing and taking" –
which is a lesson for all Jews,
also for a child of five years for Scripture
(because he learns this matter in the Chumash and in Rashi),
and also for a Jewish daughter. And moreover:
since "extra understanding
(was given)
to a woman more than to a man,"
she becomes bat mitzvah a year before a male becomes bar mitzvah. From this it is also understood,
that she is connected to the study of Scripture
(and Rashi)
even before five years.
And when one educates children
("bringing")
in all matters of good and holiness,
including the study of "raising and lowering" and "bringing and taking" –
then "even when he grows old he will not turn away from it,"
in addition to that which "from the mouths of infants and sucklings You have established strength, to still the enemy and the avenger."
And through this, an elevation is opened up in the educator himself
("and taking") –
"from my students more than all of them,"
in addition to that which he does upon the "even when he grows old he will not turn away from it" and "to still the enemy and the avenger."
Until then one "abolishes" the true "enemy and avenger" –
Then it becomes "and the spirit of impurity I will remove from the land",
which the preparation for this is through the fact that a Jew, through his service, nullifies all matters of "enemy and avenger",
including also the "our sins",
which "because of our sins we were exiled from our land",
at least sin from the term deficiency –
the Almighty then "removes" entirely the spirit of impurity from the land,
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach.
Before explaining the connection of today's Rambam lesson with the present time –
it is customary to pause on at least one halacha in the Rambam.
In today's lesson the Rambam writes:
"Five things delay the prayer even though its time has arrived",
and one of them is "intention of the heart". And the Rambam further explains:
"Intention of the heart, how so? Any prayer that is not with intention is not a prayer,
and if one prayed without intention, he returns and prays with intention."
Commentators raise a question on this and write:
"And the matter of intention implies at the end of chapter 'Ein Omdin' that it is not required as an absolute necessity,
as they said there: And if one can intend etc., he should intend in one of them
['One who prays must intend his heart in all of them,
and if he cannot intend in all of them, he should intend his heart in one',
in the first blessing of the Amidah prayer –
the blessing of Avot],
and I do not know why our teacher, may his memory be for a blessing, did not mention it."
The question becomes even stronger:
Further in the laws of prayer, the Rambam himself brings it –
"One who prayed and did not intend his heart should return and pray with intention,
and if he intended his heart in the first blessing, he no longer needs to." Which superficially is a contradiction to what he writes here plainly,
that "any prayer that is not with intention is not a prayer, and if one prayed without intention, he returns and prays with intention." Which from the simple language of the Rambam it is understood that he means the entire prayer
(not only the first blessing).
And likewise, the same question arises from what the Rambam writes in the laws of Kriat Shema,
that "one who reads the Shema and did not intend his heart in the first verse, which is 'Shema Yisrael', has not fulfilled his obligation,
and for the rest, if he did not intend his heart, he has fulfilled his obligation" –
how does this accord with what the Rambam writes here that "any prayer that is not with intention is not a prayer, and if one prayed without intention, he returns and prays with intention"?
It is forced to say that the Rambam speaks here only about intention of the heart in the first blessing
(that specifically in the first blessing intention of the heart is an absolute requirement,
and "he returns and prays with intention")
but not regarding the other blessings –
because from the unqualified language of the Rambam "five things delay the prayer",
it is understood that he means the entire prayer. As he writes explicitly –
"any prayer that is not with intention is not a prayer,
and if one prayed without intention, he returns and prays with intention."
Furthermore:
The other four things that delay the prayer,
speak about the entire prayer
(not only about the first blessing) –
it is understood the difficulty of saying that the four delaying matters pertain to the entire prayer and the fifth matter,
intention of the heart,
is only in the first blessing!
And especially since the Rambam writes his laws "in clear language and in a concise manner" –
he would certainly have explicitly warned that intention of the heart is an absolute requirement only regarding the first blessing
(as he indeed writes it further,
as above)
if he held so here;
אויב ער וואלט דא אזוי געהאלטן;
from the fact that the Rambam does not write it,
it is understood that he holds that intention of the heart is an absolute requirement in the entire prayer. One must understand how this accords with the law
(which he writes further)
that this is an absolute requirement only in the first blessing
(and in the first verse of Kriat Shema).
The explanation of this:
In the intention of prayer there are two matters:
the general intention,
and the specific intention. The general intention consists of –
"that he clear his heart from all thoughts and see himself as if he is standing before the Shechinah",
and in the well-known phrase –
"know before Whom you stand." Which is the general intention in all prayers equally,
not entering into the details of the prayers and the explanation of the words. Afterwards there is the specific intention in prayer –
the specific intention and the explanation of the words in each and every prayer individually.
That is to say:
At the time he prays for a specific request,
he must intend towards that specific detail,
and intend and understand the explanation of the words.
And this is like the intention of all the commandments,
that there are two matters in this:
the general intention common to all the commandments –
"Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us." And the particular intention in each individual commandment.
According to the formulation of the blessing over the commandments:
First one says "Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us" –
the general intention common to all the commandments,
afterwards one says regarding which particular commandment it was "Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us" –
the particular intention.
And this is like the difference between the first portion of the Shema which is corresponding to acceptance of the yoke of the kingdom of heaven and the second portion which is corresponding to acceptance of the yoke of the commandments.
And in the language of the Mechilta:
"Accept My kingship
(the general matter)
and afterwards I will decree upon you decrees
(the details)."
And one can connect this also with what was discussed,
that in the first commandment of knowledge of G-d there are these two matters mentioned above:
the general knowledge –
"to know that there is a First Existence",
and afterwards there must be the knowledge of the details,
as the Rambam continues afterwards.
And likewise this is so in all the commandments,
also –
in the commandment of prayer,
that there is the general intention –
"Know before Whom you stand",
and afterwards there is the particular intention and the explanation of the words in each individual prayer.
And based on this one will understand the matter in the Rambam:
The matter of "intention of the heart" as one of the five things that invalidate the prayer
(in chapter 4 of the Laws of Prayer)
refers to the general intention in prayer –
"that he should clear his mind of all thoughts and see himself as if he is standing before the Divine Presence",
which intention is indispensable in all prayers equally,
because the entire matter of prayer consists of this,
that "he should see himself as if he is standing before the Divine Presence",
and therefore "any prayer that is without intention
(i.e., when the general intention is lacking)
is not a prayer,
and if he prayed without intention
(the aforementioned general intention)
he returns and prays with intention."
And the Rambam does not need to explicitly explain that by "intention of the heart" he means the general intention
(and not the particular intention in each individual prayer) –
because it is understood by itself from the fact that this is one of the five things that invalidate the prayer in general,
that the other four things are general conditions regarding the entirety of the matter of prayer
(not details that pertain to a particular prayer).
For example:
"purity of the place" is a general condition,
that in order to be able to pray at all, the place of prayer must be pure. From this the explanation of "intention of the heart" is understood:
in order to be able to pray at all, one's heart must be directed to G-d.
However, the law
(which the Rambam writes further in chapter 10),
that "if he directed his heart in the first blessing he no longer needs to"
(and likewise it is brought in the question –
"One who reads the Shema and did not direct his heart in the first verse which is 'Hear O Israel' has not fulfilled his obligation,
and the rest, if he did not direct his heart, he has fulfilled his obligation")
speaks about the particular intention,
the explanation of the words of each individual prayer,
which is an obligatory requirement only in the first blessing of the silent prayer and in the first verse of the Shema,
but in the rest of the prayers and blessings it is not indispensable.
Explanation of the connection of today's Rambam lesson with
(the Shabbat after)
Purim:
The laws of prayer in their entirety have a connection with Purim –
because the miracle of Purim came about through prayer,
"the matters of the fasts and their cry." And not only through the study of the laws of prayer,
but through actual prayer.
So too the beginning of the daily lesson
(in the Laws of Prayer itself)
has a special connection with Purim:
The Rambam writes there:
"In the days of Rabban Gamliel, the heretics multiplied in Israel and they were distressing Israel and enticing them to turn away from after G-d,
and when he saw that this was greater than all the needs of people, he and his court stood and instituted one blessing that would contain a request before G-d to destroy the heretics."
Which is the content of the matter of Purim –
"and Mordechai
(and likewise "the people of Mordechai")
would not bow nor prostrate himself",
the negation of the matter of idolatry completely,
as explained in Torah Ohr that all the Jews stood then "in the aspect of actual self-sacrifice...
and it did not occur to any one of them an extraneous thought, heaven forbid."
And one must explain the reason why the Alter Rebbe uses an unusual expression "machshavat chutz"
(and not "machshavat avodah zarah" and the like) –
because this expresses the essence of the matter,
that this is outside of the Singularity of the World;
אז דאס איז חוץ מיחידו של עולם;
and in the days of Purim, the Jews were in a state that "not one of them had a thought of chutz" from the Singularity of the World,
that is, not only not idolatry,
but even not any matter of partnership
("Eloka deElokaya"),
which although according to several opinions the children of Noah are not warned about partnership,
this is nevertheless an absolute prohibition for Jews.
One sees from this,
that the essence of the matter of Purim is the same essence as the blessing against the heretics –
a complete negation of the matter of idolatry and partnership and any matter outside of the Singularity of the World,
"to return from after the Lord",
and this is –
in the language of the Rambam –
"greater than all the needs of man",
and therefore "not one of them had a thought of chutz, Heaven forbid",
because this is "greater than all the needs of man".
And according to the above explanation in the expression "machshavat chutz" –
one must explain why the blessing against the heretics
(the negation of the matter of idolatry and partnership)
is "greater than all the needs of man":
The greatest need of a Jew is –
to be one thing with the Most High,
and that he should have no thing, even a thought,
outside of Him, Heaven forbid.
And as long as he has all the requests for needs,
the most sublime needs –
the blessing of knowledge
("You graciously grant man knowledge"),
the blessing of repentance,
the blessing of forgiveness,
the blessing of redemption, etc. –
he indeed has all good things,
but he lacks his greatest need,
"for this is greater than all the needs of man" –
that he should be one thing with the Most High,
without any other thing
(machshavat chutz)
mixed into it!
As the Rambam explains at the end of the Laws of Repentance
(as discussed earlier)
that the purpose of man's service must be not for the sake of any thing outside of the Most High Himself –
"not for any thing in the world",
not in order to receive "all the blessings written" in the Torah,
not for the sake of this world,
even not for the sake of the World to Come,
where they delight in the radiance of the Divine Presence –
but service for its own sake,
out of love
(as it was with Abraham our father –
"Abraham who loves Me") –
that he serves the Lord only because of the love of the Holy One, blessed be He, who commanded the commandments,
and not for the sake of any other thing that is outside of Him.
And this is the greatest need of a person,
which is "greater than all the needs of man",
even more than the most sublime needs and blessings which one requests in the silent prayer –
that he should be one thing with the Most High alone.
And the Rambam explains there that this service applies to all Jews –
as the Rambam emphasizes there twice
(at the beginning of the chapter and at the end of the chapter) –
that even the unlearned, women, and minors, who are educated to serve the Lord out of fear and in order to receive reward
[as explained at length in the Commentary on the Mishnah of the Rambam] –
this is "until their knowledge increases and they become wise with abundant wisdom, etc., until they apprehend Him and know Him and serve Him out of love",
service for its own sake,
just as it was with "Abraham was one",
that is, that although "Abraham was one",
the service of "Abraham who loves Me" applies to all Jews!
And the manner of how to come to this love –
the Rambam continues
(at the conclusion of the chapter):
"One does not love the Holy One, blessed be He, except through the knowledge with which one knows Him,
and according to the knowledge will be the love, etc.,
therefore a person must devote himself to understand and to contemplate the wisdoms and understandings that inform him of his Master, according to the capacity that a person has to understand and to apprehend." And as was discussed,
that in these expressions of the Rambam are alluded wisdom, understanding, and knowledge:
"to contemplate the wisdoms
(wisdom)
and understandings
(understanding)
that inform
(knowledge)
him." And from this one has the lesson and allusion,
that also women
(who also need to come to service out of love,
as above)
must study Chassidus Chabad
(wisdom, understanding, knowledge),
because this brings to love.
[It was spoken here about the printing of collections of Torah novellae in the book of the Rambam –
edited by His Holiness, our Master, the Rebbe, may he live for many good years (and it was published in a separate pamphlet) and printed below on page 948].
The matter in the Zohar:
Torah is from the term instruction,
that is, that every matter in the Torah must be an instruction in the service of man.
According to this, the question arises:
What is the instruction in the service of man from this matter that is stated in the Zohar regarding the seven lights that were created before the world was created –
Is it not that what has been has been?!
And especially since this is a creation of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and in a level that is before the world was created –
what relevance does it have to the service of a Jew in the world?!
Furthermore:
In the Zohar there is an entire discussion regarding the matter of the seven lights that were created before the world was created. From this it is understood that this is further relevant to practical instruction –
according to the principle in the halachic decisors,
that when there is a discussion in the Gemara regarding one opinion,
this is a proof that the halachah is according to that opinion,
because if not, they would not have included in the Gemara a discussion that is not relevant to practical halachah.
And it will be sweetened according to what is explained in the Kuntres Acharon to the Laws of Talmud Torah –
that from the dialectics of the Tannaim and Amoraim "only a small amount was brought from it in the Talmud",
because "even in their days they were not careful to remember by heart only the halachot with their reasons, and not the dialectics that they did not review so much." And the "small amount" of discussion that is brought in the Gemara –
is primarily that which is relevant to practical halachah,
according to the aforementioned principle in the halachic decisors.
From this it is understood a fortiori regarding the Zohar:
If in the revealed part of the Torah only "a small amount" is brought from the discussions in the revealed part,
primarily that which is relevant to practical halachah –
how much more so in the Zohar,
the hidden part of the Torah,
only "a small amount" is brought from the hidden matters that were said by the Tannaim,
it is certain that that which is brought there is relevant to practical instruction.
Thus it is understood,
since in the Zohar there is a discussion on the matter of the seven lights that were created before the world was created –
there must be from this a practical instruction in the service of man.
The explanation of this will be understood according to the continuation of the words of the Zohar regarding the greatness of the matter of Torah study:
"We have learned: Every person who engages in words of Torah, etc., the Holy One, blessed be He, protects him, and the Shechinah spreads over him her wings, etc.,
and moreover, he sustains the world, and the Holy One, blessed be He, rejoices with him as if on that day He planted the heavens and the earth, etc."
That is, a person who studies Torah, he "sustains the world" that was created by the Holy One, blessed be He,
and it is as if "on that day He planted the heavens and the earth" anew. And "sustains the world" contains a superiority even over creating the world –
because this proves that he has the power to sustain the world that was created by the Holy One, blessed be He.
And based on this it is understood that all these matters that are stated regarding the creation of the world,
including that which is stated in this Zohar regarding the seven lights that were created before the world was created,
also have a relevance to the service of a Jew,
because when he studies Torah it is as if he is creating the world
("He planted the heavens and the earth")
and sustaining the world that was created by the Holy One, blessed be He.
And the explanation:
From the very fact that it is said that the seven lights were created "before the world was created",
it is understood that they have a relevance to
(the creation of the)
world,
because if they had no relevance and relation to the world, it would not be appropriate to negate and say that they were created "before the world was created"
(before the world was created).
For example, as it is not appropriate to say "regarding a certain high and deep wisdom that cannot be touched with hands because of the depth of the concept",
"because the sense of touch relates and applies only to a physical object that is grasped by the hands." And when one negates one thing from another,
it proves that they have between them a relevance and relation,
therefore one must negate it.
And according to what is explained regarding "two thousand years the Torah preceded the world",
that the very fact that it is said that it "preceded the world" proves that the Torah has a relevance to the world,
only that it "preceded the world". And it is understood further from the fact that it states a measure of how much it "preceded the world" –
"two thousand years the Torah preceded the world",
that is, that after the "two thousand years"
(in its meaning of level and degree)
it is necessary that this be revealed in the world.
And likewise it is also understood regarding the seven lights that were created "before the world was created",
that from the very fact that it is said that they were created "before the world was created",
proves that they have a relevance and relation to the world,
only in a manner that they preceded the world.
And we must add further –
According to the distinction that regarding Torah there is a measure of time how much it is "preceded the world" –
"Two thousand years",
But regarding these lights there is no measure,
Only simply "before the world was created",
Which requires explanation in several ways,
And one explanation in this for superiority is:
Even though Torah has a connection and value to the world
(As understood from that which we say that it "preceded the world"),
It is nevertheless distant from the world –
"Two thousand years",
It must pass through "two thousand years"
(Levels)
Until Torah can be drawn down and revealed in the world;
ביז אז תורה זאל נמשך ונתגלה ווערן בעולם;
But regarding these lights,
About which it is only stated that they were created "before the world was created",
Without any measurement in time,
They are a level immediately before the level of the creation of the world without any interruption between them,
And immediately after these lights are created, the world is immediately created.
That is, these lights come together with the world,
Only in this very thing they are prior to the world
(Not like Torah which is "two thousand years preceded the world").
And this is like a cause and an effect:
On one hand, the cause must have a connection and value and come together with the effect,
Because if they have no connection between them,
This is not a cause and effect;
איז דאס ניט קיין סיבה ומסובב;
On the other hand, the cause must be prior to the effect,
Because if not, this is further not a cause and effect.
That is, it can be that the cause comes together with the effect,
Only in this very thing it is prior to the effect.
And based on this, one can understand the lesson in the service of man from this matter in the Zohar regarding the seven lights that were created "before the world was created" –
According to the continuation of the words of the aforementioned Zohar,
That through the study of Torah by a Jew, it is as if he is creating the world
("He planted the heavens and the earth")
And "sustains the world":
Before a Jew goes to study Torah
(And to create and sustain the world)
There must be in him the preparation in the likeness of the seven lights
(That were created before the world was created by the Holy One, blessed be He),
Which have a connection and value to the world and to the study of Torah,
But they must come as a preparation for this,
And immediately afterward he can sit to study Torah and create and sustain the world.
And as explained in the Zohar and in the notes on the Zohar what the seven lights are,
Whose likeness also exists in the service of man. And this is not the place to elaborate on this.
What is primarily relevant to us
(From the seven lights)
Is –
איז –
The revelation of "the light of Mashiach",
Below ten handbreadths,
And in a manner of alacrity, "
(There is no [term] except the expression)
Immediate haste",
"I will hasten it in its time",
And "for generations" –
In an eternal manner,
A redemption after which there is no exile,
Together with the eternal Torah,
Together with Jews who are eternal,
As it is said "And Your people are all righteous; they shall inherit the land forever, the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, to be glorified."
And may it be His will that it should be so in actuality,
And in a manner of "immediately" –
Because already "all the appointed times have passed and the matter depends only on repentance",
And repentance can be in one hour and in one moment,
And through a mere thought of repentance –
He becomes a completely righteous person,
And "the Torah promised that Israel will ultimately repent at the end of their exile and immediately they are redeemed",
Consequently, one has both virtues –
Both that of a completely righteous person
(Which is achieved through a thought of repentance),
And that of a penitent –
"To bring back the righteous in repentance."
For this is the advantage of the future redemption over the redemption from Egypt:
Then, the Jews had only the virtue of the service of the righteous,
But in the future redemption, the Jews will have both the virtue of the righteous and the virtue of repentance,
"To bring back the righteous in repentance."
And the preparation and preface for this
(A semblance of this)
Begins already in the last days of exile,
And afterward –
In a manner of "immediately" –
One goes out from exile in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach,
And one goes to our holy land,
And to Jerusalem, the holy city,
To the Temple Mount,
And to the third Holy Temple,
And speedily in our days, literally.
[His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, may he live for many good years, Amen, hinted to the holy shaliach tzibbur, may he live, to play "May it be Your will etc. that the Holy Temple be built etc."].
Since there is no "Vaad HaMesader" yet,
and eventually there will presumably be a "Vaad HaMesader" –
I must become the "Vaad HaMesader" and remind,
that since there are guests from France,
and it is customary that whenever guests from France come here –
they sing the melody of "HaAderet VeHaEmunah" which was adapted from a foreign tune and into which the words "HaAderet VeHaEmunah etc." were inserted –
they should now begin to sing the melody,
and after them every person shall continue,
the entire congregation should help them sing.
May it be His will that very soon we will see openly how it is "HaAderet VeHaEmunah LeChai Olamim" until "HaTehilah VeHaTiferet LeChai Olamim" with all the matters in between,
below ten handbreadths,
in the true and complete redemption,
and with joy and a good heart.
[The guests from France, may they live, began to play "HaAderet VeHaEmunah etc." And the entire congregation –
after them.
Afterward, the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, began to play "Niet Niet Nikavo".
Afterward, he said:
Those who need to recite a final blessing,
will surely recite a final blessing].
