English translation 1
We have already spoken several times,
We have already spoken several times,
that when Jews gather together,
in whatever time and in whatever place it may be,
it is a matter of great importance. To the extent that it causes great joy before our Father in Heaven,
as is known the story of the old Rebbe1 who transmitted the "note that descended from heaven...
what a Chassidic farbrengen can accomplish, the angel Michael cannot accomplish",
and he explained the greatness of the joy that is aroused above through a gathering of Jews,
and this
(including the results thereof)
is then drawn down until the lowest level.
But since that which people gather together
(even though until then they were not together)
must have a reason,
therefore there are several aspects in the virtue of the gathering,
according to the virtue and goodness and strength and content of the reason,
and in addition to this,
there is an addition in the virtue of the gathering that comes through the virtue of the time of the gathering,
for in time there are indeed different levels,
a meritorious time2,
and within "meritorious" itself there can be stronger and higher and greater and deeper;
און אין "זכאי" גופא קען זיין שטארקער און העכער און גרעסער און טיפער;
and likewise regarding place,
for the place causes and as is seen simply,
that the place where one gathers and the time in which one gathers,
have an effect on those gathered.
And when all these matters
(the reason,
the time and the place)
are connected with the same point, it is understood,
that the common point adds to the result of the gathering,
that it should be with greater excellence and greater strength.
And regarding our matter:
This present gathering,
in connection with the days of Purim,
has within it an added emphasis in the matter of the unity of Israel
(that which Jews gather together)
due to the reason and place and time of the gathering
(and as has been discussed several times in various styles,
based on what is stated in the words of our Nesi'im and in the Oral Torah in general):
It is explained in the books3
(and understood in the simple meaning of Scripture),
that the claim of Haman which brought about the decree of Purim,
was connected with that which the Jews are "one nation, scattered and divided among the peoples etc."4,
meaning that they are in a movement and state of division and dispersion
(the opposite of assembly and unity).
For this reason Purim is indeed connected with such mitzvos which openly emphasize the opposite of "dispersion and division",
as explained in the books3,
that therefore the mitzvah of Purim is connected with "sending portions, a man to his fellow, and gifts to the poor"5 which is indeed the opposite of "dispersion and division",
a matter of the unity of Israel.
And likewise Purim is connected with "feasting and joy"*5,
for the completeness of feasting and joy is connected with bringing joy to other Jews,
as the Rambam emphasizes in his book6
(the book of Laws, Laws7)
that the true matter of joy is not when a person rejoices only by himself or with the members of his household,
rather he must also bring joy to other Jews.
From all this it is understood,
how the matter of "Purim"
(the reason for the gathering and the time of the gathering),
adds emphasis in the matter of the gathering and assembling together of Jews.
In addition to this, there is also an emphasis in the matter due to the place:
The gathering takes place in a "Beis HaKnesses" (synagogue),
for the simple meaning of "Knesses" is from the term "Kinus" (assembly),
that people gather together who, were it not for this place, would not be together.
Likewise, the place of the gathering is also a "Beis HaMidrash" (study hall) where one studies Torah,
and not just any study of Torah,
rather "study of Torah in public"
(which has a virtue over the study of Torah of an individual8,
as explained in Halacha9,
and all the more so in the books of Mussar and in the books of Chassidus10).
These two matters add to the importance of the place and add emphasis in the matter of the unity that is aroused during the gathering.
Furthermore:
In addition to this general matter that the time and the place are connected with unity in general,
there is an emphasis in the matter in a matter of unity that is connected with "assembly" and gathering:
Both from the aspect of the place which is a "synagogue",
as above,
and from the aspect of the time,
Purim,
and as related in the Megillat Esther,
that the miracle of Purim and the nullification of the decree were connected with "gather all the Jews"11,
the concept of "assembly".
And especially since we have the principle of "and these days are remembered and performed"12,
that at the time when there is a proper remembrance, "and performed"13 is actualized,
that all the matters that were in the first time are drawn down,
and so it is also regarding the matter of "gather all the Jews".
And on the contrary:
In the first time, they needed to have the "gather all the Jews" because of the nullification of the decree,
but now,
when one is already after the nullification of the decree,
the "gather all the Jews" effects an aspect of ascent "from strength to strength"14 within holiness itself.
In all the above, there is an additional emphasis in the time of Purim:
The matters of Purim are eternal matters,
as it says in the Megillah15 "and their remembrance will not cease from their seed",
and this adds to a person's feeling in this matter,
as one sees simply,
that when a person knows that the action he does will continue for a short time,
even though he does it,
it does not, however, reach the enthusiasm and strength and vitality with which he does such actions that he knows will continue perpetually,
a matter of infinity.
From this it is understood,
that the matter of the unity of Israel that is actualized on Purim
(which is an eternal matter)
has a special influence on each one.
And especially since here we are speaking
(not about ordinary people, but)
about Jews,
who are connected with "simple unity",
and in such a manner that the "simple unity" influences all the details and details of details,
that even when they are separated,
it is discernible in them that there is a general matter that is connected with them,
until that the action of a most particular individual among people and Jews,
even a most particular individual in a person's own life,
influences the entire collective.
And especially according to the well-known statement of the Baal Shem Tov in the name of the Rasa"g that "the essence, when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it"16,
and here itself it is emphasized that this is only "a part of it",
and nevertheless, this is not merely connected with "all of it",
rather one has "all of it" in a manner of "grasping"!
Since this saying was said by the great ones of Israel,
it is certain that all its words are precise;
איז זיכער אז אלע זיינע ווערטער זיינען בדיוק;
and since together with this they were also "leaders of Israel",
this saying is a Torah and instruction and empowerment to all those to whom the saying has come or will come
(in the future).
From all this, the emphasis in the matter of the unity of Jews is understood,
and in a manner of "all of us as one" *16.
Another matter in this:
The festival of Purim is such a festival that encompasses not only the revealed powers of people,
but also beyond that.
One of the obligations of Purim is "a person is obligated to become intoxicated on Purim until he does not know etc."17,
which is above intellect.
The perfection of a person's revealed powers is his intellectual power;
וואס די שלימות פון כחות הגלויים של האדם איז דאך דער כח השכל שבו;
but when one is at "until he does not know",
above intellect18,
this means that the knowledge is in a manner of "as waters cover the sea" *18,
that the intellect is "drowned" in it,
until one reaches "the ultimate knowledge is that we do not know"19,
that intellect itself compels that there is a thing that is above intellect.
And the matter of "until he does not know" itself is drawn into a person's body,
as the simple explanation of "to become intoxicated on Purim",
which is connected with the body and the conduct of the body and its movement simply.
The matter of above intellect emphasizes and brings out the movement of unity,
as follows
(section 6 and onward).
And especially since this is brought out in a manner of dancing which encompasses the entire body20,
for in dancing simply, all limbs dance,
from the heel of the foot to the crown of the head *20,
all at once and in the same manner, which is a matter of unity.
And furthermore:
This is not unity in the manner of "one",
which is composed of several details21,
and each detail is recognizable in itself
("one and there is a second" — of course from the language of the verse22 "there is one and there is no second")
but this is in the manner of "singular" which "has no second",
i.e., that even though the "singular" also initially consists of several details,
they nevertheless stand afterwards in a manner where each of them is nullified as a detail and only the "singularity" within it is seen.
So too is it in the dancing,
that although initially it comes as a result of contemplation in the intellect that is in the head,
the contemplation of the content of the days of Purim and the matter of the festival and the strength of the miracle etc. nevertheless brings it later to a state of "until one does not know".
[This is also an explanation regarding an additional matter:
The Gemara23 says regarding the redemption of Purim and the redemption of Pesach "connecting redemption to redemption". And seemingly:
In the redemption of Purim the emphasis is that "we are still servants of Achashverosh"24,
and the redemption of Pesach is a redemption in the manner of "they went out25 with a high hand"26 — how does the Torah of Truth say regarding these two redemptions "connecting redemption to redemption"? But according to the above it is understood,
because although the beginning of the redemption of Purim is in a manner of limitation,
it nevertheless ultimately brings to the movement of "until one does not know",
above measure and limitation,
and on the contrary,
the above measure and limitation is drawn down into the body].
May it be His will,
that each one of us and each one of the entire community of Israel should utilize the greatness of the powers and the greatness of the assistance from Above that is given during the days of Purim,
and especially in a gathering and situation of several tens of Israel,
and in a holy place and in a holy time and on meritorious days
(with all the aforementioned details),
and there should be the "connecting redemption to redemption" in its simple sense,
speedily in our days,
immediately, in our times,
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach.
And then we will continue all the matters of Purim in sequence
(without an interruption in between)
in our holy land,
and there itself in Jerusalem, the holy city,
the capital city,
"the city of the great King"27,
and there itself "on the holy mount in Jerusalem"28,
and there itself in "the Sanctuary of Hashem, Your hands have established"29,
And as it was in the days of Purim,
that the document of "hatred"30 regarding the building of the Holy Temple was nullified,
which becomes an eternal nullification,
and we will have the eternal Holy Temple31,
the Sanctuary of Hashem, Your hands have established,
And immediately, in our times.
It was mentioned earlier
(section 6),
(ס"ו),
that the matter of "until one does not know" of Purim,
with which the festival of Purim is distinct from other festivals,
emphasizes the matter of unity among Jews.
And the explanation of this in detail:
Although other festivals are festivals from the Torah,
whereas the festival of Purim was instituted by the sages of the Oral Torah
(it is a mitzvah of rabbinic origin)
nevertheless we find a contradiction:
The joy of the festival which is a biblical command "and you shall rejoice on your festival"32 must be within measure and limitation,
as the Alter Rebbe also brings in his Shulchan Aruch33 that "when a person eats and drinks and rejoices on the festival, he should not indulge in wine etc." and "the court is obligated to appoint patrolmen on the festivals etc." whereas on Purim the mitzvah is "to become intoxicated until one does not know"34.
And the matter of "until one does not know" adds to the matter of unity in the gathering,
that all Jews stand together as one without any distinction:
In general, "their opinions are not alike"35 and "their faces are not alike"35,
consequently one must provide an intellectual explanation to remove questions and difficulties as to why we gather together;
במילא דארף מען באווארענען מיט א הסברה בשכל אויף אראפנעמען שאלות וקשיות פארוואס מ'קלייבט זיך צוזאמען;
even when one answers it with a true answer, some impression of the question still remains,
and it is not entirely smooth from the outset — whereas when one stands in a state of "until one does not know",
then it is impossible to ask any questions or difficulties about this,
because this is a matter that is above intellect.
Consequently it is understood,
that specifically on Purim one stands in a movement of unity more than on other festivals,
because since we are at a level of "until one does not know",
we stand above "their opinions are not alike".
That is, although on every festival there is the matter of joy,
even dancing with the feet
(together with the head,
as above),
this is nevertheless still not above "knowledge";
איז דאס אבער נאך אלץ ניט למעלה פון "ידיעה";
whereas Purim is in a manner of "until one does not know".
Together with this, however, is the matter of "until one does not know" of Purim which is drawn into the inner powers, because the halachah itself of "a person is obligated to become intoxicated on Purim until one does not know" is a halachah in the Torah,
which is connected with knowledge and study,
until a study in the manner of knowing the halachah clearly, and the halachah itself says that it must be "until one does not know."
In continuation of this, it was also mentioned earlier,
that regarding the redemption of Purim and the redemption of Pesach, our Sages, may their memory be blessed, say23 "they juxtapose redemption to redemption"
(although superficially there is a great difference between them).
And in this as well, one finds another wonder,
in which there is seemingly expressed in Purim a matter opposite to Pesach:
It is known that in addition to the Holy Tongue, there are many languages in the world,
as emphasized in the very term "Holy Tongue,"
that there are other languages,
and in the language of the Megillah *35 "every nation according to its language"
(and as one sees simply);
(און ווי מ'זעט בפשטות);
but the Holy Tongue is the one and only language,
a "single language" just as Jews are a "single nation"
(and as our Sages, may their memory be blessed, said36 on the verse37 "And the whole earth was of one language," that this means the Holy Tongue).
It is explained in several places38 the greatness of the matter of the Holy Tongue
(and its distinction from other languages),
that it is a language in which every name and word is connected with "holiness,"
and it is explicitly stated in it that it is a part of the Holy Tongue,
unlike other languages which are languages of the profane,
not like the Holy Tongue.
Also in other languages,
the seventy languages,
there is the obligation of "all your deeds shall be for the sake of Heaven,"39
that one should use the profane languages for the sake of Heaven,
until one transforms from profane to holiness;40
ביז אז מ'זאל מהפך זיין פון חול לקדושה 40;
but in their own essence, they are matters of the profane.
And here one sees a wonder in Purim regarding the other festivals:
The names of all special days and festivals among Jews are in the Holy Tongue:
one festival is called "Chag HaMatzot" or "Chag HaAviv,"
a second is called "Chag HaShavuot,"
a third "Chag HaSukkot" or "Chag HaAsif" and so on, and likewise the other festivals, all of which have names in the Holy Tongue;
א דריטער "חג הסוכות" אדער "חג האסיף" וכיו"ב ועד"ז שאר הימים טובים וואס האבן אלע נעמען בלשון הקודש;
The only exception is the festival of Purim, regarding which "therefore they called these days Purim, after the Pur,"41
for "Pur" is not a word in the Holy Tongue,
rather it is taken from the language of Persia and Media.42
The question arises:
Why is Purim distinguished from all the festivals in this matter?
Furthermore:
As mentioned earlier, our Sages, may their memory be blessed, compared the redemption of Purim with the redemption of Pesach
("they juxtapose redemption to redemption"),
and regarding the redemption of Pesach,
the redemption from Egypt,
one finds a directly opposite matter, that one of the merits that brought the redemption was that they did not change their language,43
i.e., that although they were in the land of Egypt,
in exile,
they held onto the language of Israel,
the Holy Tongue?!
And this is also expressed in practical halachah, that when one needs to write on the day of Purim a "document,"
one must write the day as "Purim" and so forth!
Furthermore:
It is known,
that several words from several languages are used in the Holy Tongue,
and have become a part of the Holy Tongue.
This, however, is in such a manner,
that the use of the words in the Holy Tongue rendered fit, transformed, and sanctified the language of another,
through using them according to instruction from above,
in such a way that it became a part of the Holy Tongue
(as brought in the later authorities regarding several names);
(כמובא באחרונים בנוגע לכמה שמות);
In contrast, regarding the name "Purim," one could have thought,
that thousands of years after the story, the word "Purim" has already become a word in the Holy Tongue, but the Megillah44 emphasizes the opposite,
that "Pur is the lot,"
so that one should know that the word in the Holy Tongue is "Goral,"
and the word "Pur"
(and "Purim")
is not in the Holy Tongue!
Since every word in the Megillah is precise,
and "a person is obligated to read the Megillah at night and repeat it by day,"45
and he must hear every word,46 the Megillah emphasizes that "Pur" and "Goral" are two separate words!
That is, they indeed adopted the word, but in such a manner that it is not transformed from the language of Media and Persia into the Holy Tongue,
rather it remains the language of Persia and Media!
What, in general, do Jews have the power to transform a secular language into a holy language,
exactly as this is in the totality of Torah and its mitzvos,
that one takes secular items and makes from them articles for a mitzvah and articles for holiness, up to a sacred object with which one swears while holding an object47
(like an oath on a Sefer Torah48)
which the oath has a special force;
וואס די שבועה האט א תוקף מיוחד;
but regarding the word "Purim," one does not transform the word into the Holy Tongue,
rather it remains the language of Persia and Media.
[And this is also a matter that is relevant to halachah:
According to halachah, there are certain documents that must be written in one language,
and one may not write them in two languages together;
און מ'טאר זיי ניט שרייבן בשתי לשונות ביחד;
consequently, when one incorporates words from other languages and this becomes a part of the Holy Tongue, one may use that word in a document written in the Holy Tongue,
as is explained at length in the books49,
but regarding the name "Purim," this is a term that remains the language of Media and Persia].
It follows,
that when one tells about the nullification of the decree of Purim,
and about the festival of Purim, one emphasizes that they are called specifically by the name "Yemei HaPurim,"
after the pur which "is the lot" in the Holy Tongue!
Yes. And since every matter in Torah is a lesson in the service of man to his Maker, it is understood,
that this very matter is a lesson in the service of man to his Maker,
and not just one lesson,
but many lessons,
for Torah is "longer than the measure of the earth and broader than the sea"50.
So the rationale for this is according to what was said above, that the matter of Purim is not only a movement of "until one does not know" which is above measure and limitation,
but rather the drawing down of "that which is above measure and limitation,"
and the simple unity into the place of "dispersion and division,"
and into the place of knowledge.
That is, the novelty of Purim is,
that together with the fact that Jews are a nation that is "scattered and dispersed among the nations,"
the essential point of a Jewish existence and life should be "one nation,"
through "and their laws are different from every nation"51.
And not that one nullifies the "scattered and dispersed,"
rather one emphasizes,
that within this very "scattered and dispersed" it is emphasized that the main thing that rules and dominates in Jewish life is the matter of unity,
"one nation."
And on the contrary:
The fact that they are "scattered and dispersed" adds an additional emphasis to the "unity" of Jews. And as one sees simply,
that when one unites and connects two things that are close to each other, one is not certain that the connection will be a lasting thing;
אז בשעת מ'איז מאחד און מ'פארבינדט צוויי זאכן וואס זיינען נאענט איינע מיט די צווייטע איז מען ניט זיכער אז דער קשר וועט זיין א דבר של קיימא;
but when they are two opposites and it has been achieved to make from them one thing, to the point that it holds thus for a period of time,
then one is certain
(a chazakah, the matter is established)
that thus it will be forever and ever,
because this is a novelty,
and the novelty has passed the two chazakos and so forth52.
And this is the matter that is emphasized in that the name of this festival is not a name in the Holy Tongue,
but specifically in the language of Media and Persia,
to inform us,
that the content of this festival is,
that even in the place of the languages of Persia and Media,
there too the festival of Purim reaches,
and it effects there the matter of "one nation,"
and the matter of "until one does not know."
And from this there is also a practical lesson in the dissemination of Judaism and the wellsprings:
When one meets a Jew who knows nothing at all about Purim,
one might think,
that one should begin with him from the alef-beis of Judaism,
from the Ten Commandments and so forth,
and then,
gradually, one will add another mitzvah and another matter,
until one comes to the Rabbinic commandments,
until the mitzvah of Purim;
ביז די מצוה פון פורים;
one says immediately that the mitzvah of Purim is connected to the language of Persia and Media!
Simply put,
the name of this festival emphasizes,
that "in those days",
when one came to a Jew in the land of Media and Persia and wanted to tell him that a new festival had been added, they did not wait until that Jew would know what the meaning of the word "Goral" is and its relevance to him etc., rather they immediately gave him a festival called "Purim",
consequently they are spared from having to explain the details of the matter,
because they immediately convey to him the essential concept,
and "the rest, go and learn"53,
the Jew will certainly inquire about the remaining details,
because "one who has one hundred wants two hundred"54,
he has a point, he wants to know the other details.
And so too in the present time, that one can immediately begin speaking with a Jew about the concept of Purim,
and this will bring with it all the other matters.
And from this there is also a lesson regarding all the gatherings and all the farbrengens that are held during the days of Purim or in the days before or after in connection with Purim, that the name "Purim" emphasizes,
that when one sees a matter of the profane,
one must immediately see in it the ultimate purpose of the matter,
to draw holiness into it,
just as the purpose of the "Pur" was that it should reveal the same content as "Goral" in the Holy Tongue.
And on the contrary, in order to reveal the concept of Goral through "Pur", one needs even more strength,
to penetrate the language of Media and Persia,
where for them "Pur" is an ordinary thing,
and to transform it with a festival that is in the category of "until one does not know",
until this is connected with Pesach,
"connecting redemption to redemption"23.
And as explained in the books of Mussar,
and at length in the books of Chassidus and Kabbalah55,
that the concept of "Goral" is connected with the aspect of "until one does not know",
for the entire content and essence of "Goral" is,
that it is not chosen according to intellect,
rather when, according to intellect, all parts are equal,
then through the Goral one chooses one thing from all of them, above intellect and knowledge.
And this concept is revealed in such a manner,
that it is in the language of Media and Persia.
This concept also exists in the service of every individual, and that is the service of Teshuvah:
The concept of Purim is,
as explained in the Megillah56,
"and it was turned over etc.",
a matter of transformation,
until "many of the people of the land became Jews"57,
that one makes from the profane and "people of the land" a matter of holiness and Judaism,
and as it says in the Megillah58 "and the month which was turned for them from sorrow to joy and from mourning to a festival".
And in the language of the verse59 "may his evil thought return",
that the thought of the wicked Haman, from the descendants of Amalek60
(Amalek in gematria is Safek61),
becomes overturned and confused,
until "may his evil thought return",
that there becomes in it a matter of Teshuvah,
a new thing.
And as has been discussed several times the superiority of Teshuvah,
that Teshuvah adds a new category in Mitzvos62:
Before the concept of Teshuvah, there are only three categories in the world:
Mitzvos,
permissible matters,
and matters opposite to Mitzvos;
און עניני היפך המצוות;
Teshuvah, however, reveals a new category in Mitzvos,
such Mitzvos that come from that which "intentional sins become for him like merits". These are indeed "merits". But not simple "merits",
rather such "merits" that one has transformed
(through the instruction of the Torah and the power of the Torah)
from "intentional sins" through Teshuvah from fear that leads to Teshuvah from love,
until the opposite becomes in ultimate perfection.
And this is the same concept of taking a word from the languages of the nations,
which remains the languages of the nations,
and from it one makes a festival,
and not just a festival,
but a festival that is on a level of "Goral",
until one does not know,
above the aspect of knowledge.
And from this there is also a lesson regarding the situation of the Jews in the present time, the time of exile:
One must know,
that that which placed him into exile,
is only in order that through this there should come about good matters,
and in the language of the Megillah, that there becomes the "and it was turned over",
to transform the "but to a holiday",
consequently the advantage of a new matter in the matter of freedom will come about:
just as in "merits" there is a special novelty when these are such merits that come from the transformation of intentional sins
(through the service of repentance),
so too there is a special novelty in such freedom and redemption that comes from a very great exile.
Just as this was in those days,
at the time of the Purim miracle,
so too is it actualized also in this time,
because "these days are remembered and done",
meaning, that through the fact that one remembers the content of these days, the matter is actualized in deed,
"are done",
exactly as it was at that time.
And when one encounters a Jew who, due to reasons not dependent on him and for various and sundry reasons, has until now been "captured among the nations"63,
"between Persia and Media", one awakens in him the "and it was turned over",
that he should be a "dancer" in the manner of "until he does not know",
due to the fact that he has already learned and seen a living example that Jews are "one nation" whose "religions are different from every nation" even in a situation and state of "scattered and dispersed among the nations" and a state of "we are still servants of Achashverosh"24,
that this already brings a great joy.
That is, he cries out and emphasizes,
that the redemption has not yet come,
and "we are still servants of Achashverosh",
therefore the holiday is called by the name "Purim" and not by the name "Lots",
and nevertheless,
while still being "in their settlements"64,
in the time of exile,
they have the superiority of "until he does not know",
the superiority of the lot which is above intellect,
as above.
Consequently, even before the true and complete redemption comes, which will indeed come speedily in our days, literally,
immediately, in our days, literally, even if he has no explanation in intellect how he will make from this "lot" a "lot",
until in a manner that a "lot" should remain and in that very place there should be "until he does not know",
he draws this down,
because this is the lesson and instruction of Purim.
And just as this is regarding Purim, so too is it in the totality of his service in worldly matters,
that the matters that are found in his domain must have in them "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven"39 and "in all your ways know Him"65
(as the law in Shulchan Aruch66),
meaning, that although these are ostensibly "your ways",
his ways,
matters of livelihood and the like,
in the time of exile and outside the Land,
mundane matters
(such matters that one may not sacrifice,
because sacrifices must be from a holy thing)
they must be "for the sake of Heaven" and "know Him".
And this itself is divided into two stages67:
First it becomes "for the sake of Heaven",
which is not "Heaven" itself;
וואס איז ניט "שמים" אליין;
and afterwards it becomes "know Him",
and the simple explanation of this is,
that through this the knowledge in Heaven itself is achieved!
And as the ruling of the Rambam at the beginning of his book68,
that the first commandment consists of "know Him" "to know that there is a First Existence and He brings into existence all existence and all existences from heaven and earth and what is between them did not come into existence except from the truth of His existence".
And as the Rambam continues there69 "and if it arises in the mind that He does not exist, no other thing can possibly exist",
which is the same content as the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov70 that the coming into being of creations must be at every single moment,
consequently,
at the time that the creations have their Creator taken away from them
(for whatever reason it may be)
the existence of the entire order of the chain of descent becomes nullified
(heaven and earth and what is between them),
because the existence of this "existent" cannot be even for one moment without the connection to the word of Hashem which brings it into being and gives it life and sustains it.
And this is the same content as the matter stated above, that there is an existence of "existences",
mundane matters,
"the language of Media and Persia";
"שפת מדי ופרס";
and in this Purim reveals,
that even while remaining the language of Media and Persia, the word "Purim" is connected to the Holy Tongue,
"Pur is the lot".
That this is the perfection of the service of Jews before the level of "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven",
and afterwards "in all your ways know Him",
that one utilizes every matter in the world,
that it should be "know Him",
"know the G-d of your father"71
(according to the simple interpretation of this verse).
And this further connects the "document of redemption from redemption",
the true and complete redemption,
when "the earth will be filled with knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea"72,
speedily in our days, literally,
and in our time.
It was mentioned earlier,
that the matter of the farbrengen is a good thing in itself,
but when it meets with other good matters
(due to the time and place, etc.),
the goodness is increased with greater strength and vigor.
And from this it is understood regarding all matters that are good and holy in themselves,
that when one good and holy matter in itself meets with another good and holy matter in itself, the goodness and holiness are then increased with greater strength and vigor.
For example:
Every time one fulfills a mitzvah,
the very fulfillment of the mitzvah is a most elevated matter,
because one fulfills the commandment of the King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He,
"Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us",
and "mitzvah" is from the term "attachment and connection"73,
meaning that through the fulfillment of the mitzvah one becomes attached to the Supreme One,
having merited to fulfill His command and His mitzvot.
However, there is a special superiority in the matter when the fulfillment of the mitzvah is at a worthy time,
and likewise in a special place,
for then the fulfillment of the mitzvah is with greater strength and vigor.
And regarding our matter:
The matter of Purim contains within itself a special and elevated content, the matter of the unity of Israel,
and as explained at length,
that the content of the festival of Purim is that in contrast to the matter of "scattered and dispersed among the nations", it is emphasized that Jews are "one nation",
and moreover,
that even while being "scattered and dispersed" they are "one nation",
meaning that the unity of Jews calls forth inner powers so that the "scattering and dispersion" should not affect the unity,
and then the unity is with greater force,
it is a more inner action and for a longer duration,
since it has the advantage of "the advantage of light that comes from darkness"74 and "the advantage of wisdom over foolishness"74,
as is also simply understood,
that when a matter requires more effort and exertion, it has greater endearment, permanence, and depth.
And this matter exists every year during the days of Purim,
which are on fixed days in the month of Adar,
the 14th and 15th of it,
as explained in the Megillah in detail.
However, a special force is added when it "meets" with another special matter due to the time,
the special day of the week,
which is the third day of the week,
which is a "worthy day" regarding the matter of farbrengen, gathering, and assembly,
and as will be explained.
When one wants to know what is the special matter of the third day of the week, one must seek in the Torah, the Written Torah tells,
and the Oral Torah explains and elucidates,
that the third day is distinguished from the days before it and after it by that which "it was doubled with 'that it was good'"75.
Regarding every day the matter of "and G-d saw that it was good" was said,
but on the third day it is stated76 twice "that it was good".
What does the doubling of "that it was good" mean in the service of man? It is explained77,
that this means "good for Heaven and good for the creations"78.
Beginning from this matter as it is in the Torah,
that in the Torah there is the matter of endearment
(which is why one recites a blessing over it79,
as explained in the Gemara and in the Poskim,
and it is a simple matter)
that in matters of Torah there must be "good for Heaven" and "good for the creations",
which means in the commandments of the Torah,
"great is study that brings to action"80 fulfillment of the commandments of the Torah,
both the mitzvot between man and the Omnipresent and the mitzvot between man and his fellow.
And according to the simple understanding of the matter,
that also "creations" are included in "between man and his fellow" in "and you shall love your fellow as yourself"81,
as the Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya, chapter 32,
that "this is what Hillel the Elder said82: be of the disciples of Aaron, loving peace etc., loving the creations and bringing them close to Torah,
to say that even those who are distant from the Torah of Hashem and His service, and therefore are called merely 'creations', one must draw them with cords of love etc."
(and as explained at length in the continuation of the chapter and in the commentaries and explanations on the chapter).
And from this concept as it is in Torah, it is thus drawn into the world,
as it says in the Zohar<sup>83</sup>: "The Holy One, blessed be He, looked into the Torah and created the world;
a person looks into the Torah and sustains the world."
Thus, the service of a Jew is in the manner of "good for Heaven" and "good for the creations."
Here one immediately sees the connection with the concept of Purim, the concept of unity among Jews, because also on the third day the concept of "good for the creations" is emphasized,
love of Israel and unity of Israel.
It is understood,
that when Purim coincides with the third day of the week,
there is in this a special emphasis on this matter,
with greater strength and vigor.
In this, however, there is yet another special lesson from the third day "on which 'it was good' was doubled":
In general, these two matters
(good for Heaven and good for the creations)
can be in a manner where each one is a separate entity;
זיין באופן אז יעדערער פון זיי איז אן ענין בפני עצמו;
but when the third day comes,
when both matters stand on that same day
(and both are in the Torah of life,
a lesson in life,
and the Torah of truth,
which brings out the truth that is in every matter)
one says,
that then one has both matters in every point!
And as has been discussed several times84,
that when one asks about a moment of the third day
(which is a very short time,
a moment as it were85)
to which day it belongs, one answers,
that the moment belongs to the third day "on which 'it was good' was doubled",
"good for Heaven and good for the creations",
meaning that the small moment contains within itself both matters,
"good for Heaven" and "good for the creations".
This is emphasized in that the concept of "good for the creations",
the commandment of "love your fellow as yourself",
is also a law in the Torah,
a matter of "good for Heaven",
and on the contrary, "this is the entire Torah,
and the rest is commentary; go and learn"86, as the explanation of the matter is explained in Tanya, chapter 32,
how the concept of love of Israel is connected with the entirety of the Torah,
but even simply one sees that this is a commandment between man and the Omnipresent.
And since this stands in the Torah of truth, it is understandable,
that when a Jew thinks
(and it appears to him)
that since he does not yet have the feeling of the matter,
and he does the matter
(of "good for Heaven" or "good for the creations")
as an "artificial thing", one tells him:
No! The Torah of truth says that this is your true reality,
that every matter you do is permeated with "good for Heaven and good for the creations"!
This too is emphasized in the days of Purim:
The festival of Purim contains within itself the two types of commandments of "good for Heaven" and "good for the creations":
There are commandments between man and the Omnipresent,
such as reading the Megillah and reciting "Al HaNissim"
(to thank and praise the Holy One, blessed be He, for His kindnesses)
and reading the Torah and the like,
and the other matters between man and the Omnipresent;
ושאר הענינים שבין אדם למקום;
and there are such commandments
(primary commandments of the days of Purim)
whose entire essence is "between man and his fellow",
"good for the creations", like the commandments of "sending portions each man to his fellow and gifts to the poor".
And in them, the "good for the creations" is so relevant,
that the law87 is,
that if he sent portions and gifts to the poor and they did not reach the hands of "his fellow" or the hands of the "poor",
he has not fulfilled the commandment!
Seemingly:
What claim can one have against him;
וואס פאר א טענות קען מען האבן צו אים;
he did his part?!
But one says,
that the law is,
that he did not fulfill the commandment. This emphasizes that it is not about his performance of the commandment
(good for Heaven),
but rather that it should actually reach "his fellow" and the "poor",
that it should be good for the creations.
This exists on Purim of every year, and there comes an emphasis when Purim falls on the third day of the week,
when it is emphasized how every moment is connected with both matters of "good for Heaven" and "good for the creations".
From this there is a lesson and empowerment also for the entirety of a person's service throughout the year, that every matter should have within itself both movements of "good for Heaven and good for the creations":
A Jew might think,
that since he is a soul in a body,
and is limited by the limitations of time and place,
therefore he might think that it is impossible that at the very same moment he should do a matter that is both "for the sake of Heaven" and "for the sake of the creations," they say,
that the Torah of truth gives the power to every Jew,
that in every single moment he should be able to perform both matters,
both "between man and the Omnipresent,"
and "between man and his fellow";
סיי "בין אדם לחבירו";
because every matter in the Torah is connected with the other matters of the Torah,
until all the matters in the Torah
(including the mitzvah of reading the Megillah (or hearing the Megillah) and saying "Al Hanissim" etc., and the mitzvot of "sending portions a man to his fellow and gifts to the poor")
are a part of one Torah,
which includes all its details,
and on the contrary,
the perfection of the entire Torah is dependent on the perfection of all the details.
And as has been discussed several times, the example of this is that for a Torah scroll to be kosher,
all its letters must be perfect88,
and so it is also regarding the study of Torah,
that even when one studies a part of the Torah, he has in it the entire Torah
(both when one studies a fundamental matter in the Torah that is equivalent to the entire Torah or includes the entire Torah (such as the mitzvah of Ahavat Yisrael,
as above),
and also a particular mitzvah),
because "when you grasp a part of the essence, you grasp all of it"16.
And simply, this means,
that every service of a Jew is permeated both with good for Heaven and good for the creations,
for just as the matter of "good for the creations"
(Ahavat Yisrael)
is a mitzvah
(also)
between man and the Omnipresent, so too regarding the mitzvot between man and the Omnipresent,
they also contain matters of "good for the creations."
For example:
When a Jew fulfills a mitzvah between man and the Omnipresent, he has the power to join himself with the community.
And as the text of "L'Shem Yichud"
(which some say89 and others think90)
that the performance of the mitzvah is "for the sake of the union of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah, etc., in a perfect union in the name of all Israel,"
and so too is the law in the Shulchan Aruch91,
that in every matter one must join himself with the community.
It is indeed an individual mitzvah,
a particular mitzvah,
like laying tefillin for example
("Vayikar92 these are tefillin"93)
which is a "mitzvah of his body," but nevertheless, in tefillin the connection with the community is emphasized:
the portions in the tefillin speak about the Exodus from Egypt,
which is connected with the entirety of Israel,
and in the language of the Haggadah94:
"And had the Holy One, blessed be He, not taken our forefathers out of Egypt, then we, our children, and our children's children would still be enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt."
It turns out,
that when a person lays tefillin,
and fulfills a mitzvah between man and the Omnipresent,
he fulfills the mitzvah through his connection with the entirety of Israel,
and moreover with every single Jew,
and as is known95 that at the time of the Exodus from Egypt, not a single Jew remained in exile!
[For in this, the Exodus from Egypt is similar to Purim, for the decree of Haman (may his name be blotted out) was "to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish...
from young to old, infants and women, in one day"96,
and so too the miracle of the Exodus from Egypt was regarding all Jews,
"men, women, and children,"
and "in one day,"
and moreover,
"in the blink of an eye"97,
in one moment].
And this is the general lesson that is learned from the days of Purim, especially when Purim occurs on the third day of the week:
Although the day of Purim is connected with the limitations of place and time, therefore Purim is specifically on the fourteenth of the month,
not before
(in the month of Shevat etc.)
and not after
("and it shall not pass"98)
they say,
that "when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it,"
that in the limitation
("part")
is included the entire essence,
and in a manner that it influences all the time after it.
And simply,
that when one contemplates the content of the matter of the days of Purim,
that it contains both matters of "good for Heaven" and "good for the creations,"
and especially in the determination of this year when Purim is on the third day of the week,
every moment of Purim gives vitality and strength for the entire year,
an eternal unification forever and ever,
that the influence of the state of mind, contemplation, and enthusiasm in which one stood during the days of Purim of this year should be apparent throughout the entire year.
What brings this closer and faster to the "document from redemption to redemption",
because since the cause of the exile is nullified,
the matter of "scattered and dispersed",
the opposite of "baseless love"99,
consequently the effect is nullified,
One comes from the redemption of Purim,
when one is still in the days of exile,
"we are still servants of Achashverosh",
to the true and complete redemption through Mashiach our righteous one,
speedily in our days, literally.
We spoke earlier,
how the miracle of Purim and the nullification of Haman's decree came about through the fact that Jews emphasized that although they are "scattered and dispersed among the nations",
and "we are still servants of Achashverosh", nevertheless,
they are "one nation",
and the unity is brought about through that which "their laws are different",
as discussed above briefly,
and at length in the Midrashim of our Sages, of blessed memory.
This, however, brought about the nullification of the root of the decree, but in order for the nullification of the decree to come down in actuality,
in speech above and speech below,
down to the speech of King Achashverosh etc., a special action was needed from the Jews below.
And this was the matter of strengthening the education of Jewish children,
as related at length in the Midrashim of our Sages, of blessed memory100.
And as explained at length in the discourse beginning "And the Jews accepted" of the Nasi of our generation, his holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
(which was said on Purim Katan101,
and has already been printed102)
that regarding this it says in the verse103 "From the mouth of infants and sucklings You have established strength...
to still the enemy and the avenger",
that the nullification of this "enemy and avenger",
including Haman's decree,
was through "from the mouth of infants and sucklings",
through which "You have established strength",
"there is no strength but Torah"104,
that this is the foundation of the Torah.
From this it is understood,
that one of the matters unique to "Purim",
is the matter of the education of "infants and sucklings",
including both "infants and sucklings" in years,
and also those who are adults in years,
but they are "infants and sucklings" in knowledge, understanding, and comprehension.
One of the foundations and beginnings of the matter of education in general,
is to guard against undesirable inclinations that a person has.
It could be,
that due to his evil inclination and his evil nature,
a person may not be able to see the truth and good and upright,
because he "takes a bribe" and thinks that the undesirable matter is good for him, and this must be guarded against through proper education.
And as related in the first story in the Torah,
that when it was seen that the Tree of Knowledge was "a desire to the eyes"105,
one considered that it was "good...
for food"106, not looking at the command of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and from this came the matter of the opposite of life for many generations
(as related at length in the Midrashim of our Sages, of blessed memory107).
And this is guarded against through "from the mouth of infants and sucklings You have established strength",
"there is no strength but Torah",
through proper education according to Torah.
That the matter of negating undesirable things must be with force and "strength",
and in the language of the wisest of all men108 "he who spares his rod hates his son",
that if there is lacking in this the force of negating undesirable things,
not only is this not a good thing,
but on the contrary, from this comes the opposite of good and the opposite of love,
it is a matter of "hates his son".
And furthermore, we see in actuality,
that the matter of "he who spares his rod" brings about that the "son" is ultimately not satisfied,
and comes with complaints why there was "he who spares his rod",
why the son was talked into foolishness and stupidity which is the opposite of his welfare,
and thereby he was made unhappy.
And all this is explained at length in the books of ethics;
וכמבואר כל זה בארוכה אין ספרי מוסר;
and furthermore, "why do I need a verse,
it is logical"109, we see it in actuality.
In this there is an additional emphasis:
The aforementioned matter is not only connected with negating undesirable things that the "son" may receive from the outside,
but also regarding the undesirable traits and natures with which he is born, that these too must be changed for the good through education in a manner of "strength",
and the opposite of "he who spares his rod".
This is also connected with the shiur of the Rambam from these days,
where he explains<sup>110</sup> that "every person is given free will;
if he wishes to incline himself to the good path and be righteous, the choice is in his hand,
and if he wishes to incline himself to the evil path and be wicked, the choice is in his hand"
(as it is written111 "See, I have set before you today life and good" and the opposite,
"and you shall choose"112,
a Jew has the power to choose from both paths).
The question on this is known:
The Rambam writes in Hilchos Deos113
(and similar)
that "there are many dispositions for each and every person...
miserly and generous, cruel and merciful...
and so forth",
and "some of these dispositions are with a person from the beginning of his creation according to the nature of his body, etc."114,
does it not turn out that a person is born from the outset with a trait of a "miser"
(a stingy person)
or another trait?
It is explained115,
that "meaning that he has a slight inclination",
that he has an inclination by nature towards an undesirable matter,
"but what our teacher, of blessed memory, said is that nothing compels him, etc."
And the way to overcome an undesirable inclination is,
simply,
through the fact that as a child he is educated in the manner of "establish strength",
with strength and might.
For if one "withholds his rod" it could be,
that by the time he learns to overcome his inclinations he will have already brought troubles upon himself and those around him;
אז ביז ער וועט זיך אויסלערנען להתגבר על נטיותיו וועט ער דערוויילע אנטאן צרות זיך און ארום זיך;
therefore, first and foremost there must be "his rod",
and through this one does good for the child.
And since here it speaks of "his son",
his own child,
to whom he has a special obligation,
it is understood,
that despite the difficulties involved,
he will certainly carry out the matter of "his rod" properly.
And this matter is something that is seen in practice,
and as mentioned above that "why do I need a verse,
it is logical":
People are born with different traits and in this there must be proper education,
so that the person grows up properly:
There are traits that are indeed good in themselves, but since this is only from nature and the intellect can say the opposite,
one must educate the intellect,
so that a person's conduct in practice is proper;
אז הנהגת האדם בפועל זאל זיין כדבעי;
Then there are traits that are not good;
דערנאך זיינען דא אזוינע תכונות וואס טויגן ניט;
and then there is a holy and special obligation and a good and upright thing,
to correct these traits.
And this holy obligation lies especially upon those who have some connection or feeling towards the person
(a child or an adult),
and all the more so when there is love for the child or adult.
And this consists of,
that despite the fact that the other person screams that this is his nature and this is his will,
and he takes upon himself the consequences that may result from it
(or he does not believe they will come about, etc.)
one does not "withhold his rod",
rather one does everything to nullify the undesirable matter.
And just as this is regarding every child,
that he has good traits and non-good traits,
so too is there a difference between children themselves:
It is seen in practice
("a child is known by his deeds"116),
that some children are born
(for whatever reason)
with good traits,
including good for themselves,
and other children are
(for whatever reason)
born with traits that require education and correction,
and if the trait is with him in very great strength,
the education must be connected with the opposite of "withholding his rod".
For example:
There are children who are born with a trait
(far be it)
of tearing out their own hair from their head,
or their nails,
or banging their head against the wall, etc.
One sees,
that one who has a true feeling for the child,
and desires his true good, does not "withhold his rod",
and does everything he can to nullify the undesirable trait;
און טוט אלץ וואס ער קען צו מבטל זיין די תכונה בלתי רצוי';
and afterwards the child will surely thank him for having used the "rod",
and prevented him from tearing his hair from his head or tearing his nails or banging his head against the wall, etc.,
and he will thank him with true gratitude,
and cherish him with true love until the end of his days!
Just as this is regarding children, so too is it regarding adults,
that when one educates them to change harmful character traits,
this causes a true gratitude and a true love on their part.
A question can be raised:
how can one compel an adult
(if he was not educated in his childhood,
or the education did not (for whatever reason) have an effect,
consequently the trait remained with him)
to act contrary to his nature?
There is a promise from the Most High in His Torah,
the Torah of truth and Torah of life, that every person can choose "in life"!
Only, there is a child or adult for whom the choice will come easier, not to tear his hair out:
and for another it comes harder, but it is a certain thing,
that since this is contrary to human health
(contrary to the command of the Most High "and you shall greatly guard your souls"117)
it is a certain thing that one can accomplish this,
if one will only exert oneself in this properly.
And furthermore
(as above):
not only do the educators etc. have the power to accomplish this,
but one will certainly also have the true, soulful, and constant gratitude of that one
(child or adult)
in whom one has changed
(and broken the habit of)
the undesirable habits and traits.
That is, even though the child
(etc.)
claims beforehand
(before he comes to recognition that this is a harmful matter),
that he was born with such a trait in his soul
(and this is indeed so),
it is a certain thing that in the end, one will convince him.
And as we see it,
not for Jews to think and not for people to think,
in many cases,
that in the end one convinced the child or adult,
and in a manner that he thanked for it,
and this was a logical reason why he thanks for it.
And here is the place to remark regarding a matter about which there was recently a commotion specifically here in the city:
They made a whole commotion regarding a certain trait,
and they relied on a crooked path,
and through crooked arguments
(which are indeed true arguments but they are not relevant to this matter)
they came to undesirable results!
And they ruled,
that all those who have the aforementioned trait must be protected from any matter or description that would harm this trait,
as if the trait is their reality and their essence during Torah study,
and the straight intellect that believes in a Creator of the world,
and consequently he is certain that the Creator of the world did not create things to harm him and to change him
(or to change him)
and as follows compels,
that this is an undesirable trait that must be corrected!
But these are decisions of human beings, and a desire of a human being is a human being subject to change,
and when one will show him an actual reality,
he will immediately understand the error:
When one will take the aforementioned example of children who are born
(G-d forbid)
(ר"ל)
with traits of tearing their hair out of their head
(or banging their head against the wall etc.)
and one will simply transfer it to this trait about which there was the commotion, one will immediately come to the correct conclusion:
Let us say,
that a person who has the trait of tearing his hair out of his head comes with a claim,
that this is his own head,
and these are his own hairs,
and he screams that one should not interfere with him etc.;
און ער שרייט מ'זאל זיך צו אים ניט מישן וכיו"ב;
And he claims,
that if he wants a place where he will act by himself,
in his own room, one must relate to him with respect,
and one will not be permitted to say a word to him,
and he will be able to tear his own hair from his own head with joy and goodness of heart and choice...
It is understood simply,
that this is not the order of conduct in the world which is in the manner of "to inhabit it He created it"<sup>118</sup>;
אז ניט דאס איז דער סדר ההנהגה אין וועלט וואס איז באופן פון "לשבת יצרה" 118;
when a person has such a trait,
one corrects it etc.
What here
(in the parable)
is only about hair that is a secondary matter;
רעדט זיך בלויז וועגן האר וואס זיינען א דבר טפל;
from this it is understood all the more so regarding the moral that is connected to a matter that is "the strength of the body and its life and the light of the eyes"119,
and upon this depends the existence of his generations after him until the end of all generations, then certainly in such a matter the aforementioned reasoning is valid,
and with greater emphasis and strength!
So since one knows that this is a harmful thing, it is exactly like in the aforementioned example of a person who is born with the trait of tearing out the hair from his head;
איז וויבאלד מ'ווייס אז דאס איז א דבר המזיק איז דאך דאס פונקט ווי אין דער דוגמא האמורה פון א מענטשן וואס ווערט געבארן מיט דער תכונה זיך צו רייסן די האר פון קאפ;
The only difference is,
that here it is about spiritual harm!
Another example of the matter:
That which others claim,
that since he derives pleasure from it, that is proof that it is a good thing, is the same as taking a "deadly poison",
and coating it with sugar,
and then someone comes and claims,
that he does not believe that in this sugar there is deadly poison, and the proof,
it is sweet;
עס איז מתוק;
or he claims,
that all matters are worthwhile to him,
as long as he can have the sugar,
even though it is only for a "brief moment",
and this is not ordinary sugar etc.
It is therefore understood,
that the one who will let himself be persuaded and eat from this sugar will himself later come with complaints to those who persuaded him.
And so regarding our matter:
Those who have the aforementioned undesirable traits will be the first to come with complaints,
and heap troubles,
upon those who voted for this!
He himself
(or she herself)
will later come and complain to those who voted for this, that only because they wanted to show that they can vote and speak in a certain manner,
they have perverted the good of those with this trait!
Based on all that has been said, it is also understood,
that there is no place for the claim,
that this is the trait of this particular person
(whether he is a "he" or a "she"),
consequently he wants to indulge himself and "who can say to him, what do You do", because it is not relevant whether this is an inborn trait,
rather what is relevant is that this is a harmful thing.
Regarding this, it is not relevant that he
(not only was born,
but also)
grew up with this trait,
and it was
(for whatever reason)
not corrected
(and perhaps so-and-so is guilty in this or not,
but there is no difference that it was not actually corrected),
because his habituation to this trait does not make it cease to be a harmful thing,
and an utterly evil thing,
and the opposite of the settlement of the entire world.
And especially since here it is not only about letting them conduct themselves for themselves according to this trait,
rather here it is about giving them the possibility to occupy an important place,
and one will have to reckon with them,
consequently one will also have to reckon with their deficiencies,
as long as they do not correct this deficiency!
First of all, this is
(as mentioned)
a harm to themselves;
א היזק פאר זיי אליין;
and in addition to this,
when one places them in a position and situation where one must give them honor and be careful with a word,
so as not to harm their honor etc., it also brings harm to others.
Based on the above, another matter is understood:
When one wants to explain to them that this is an undesirable matter etc., this is not a "harm to their honor",
rather this is a matter of correcting their illness!
When a person is not healthy
(for a reason not dependent on him)
and one wants to help him become healed from his illness, this is not a lack of honor for the patient...
And that the patient screams that he is healthy,
and the trait that he has is a good trait,
at least a non-harmful thing, proves that the illness is much deeper and more dangerous,
consequently one must adopt special measures to save him from the illness,
which causes troubles!
It is not a matter of insulting him or harming his honor; on the contrary,
one wants to do him a favor!
And that which he claims
(as mentioned)
that he was born with this trait, this itself explains how this is not a perversion;
אז ער איז געבארן געווארן מיט דער תכונה איז דאס גאר מסביר ווי אזוי דאס איז ניט קיין זידלעריי;
and it is like one who is
(as mentioned)
born with a trait of tearing out the hair from his head, it is not possible to consider him perverted,
because he was born that way;
ווייל ער איז אזוי געבוירן געווארן;
but this does not mean that one need not correct it!
On the contrary:
When one stands from the side,
and pats him on the shoulder,
and tells him that he is already a grown person
(after Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah)
and can elect the "president" of the state just as a great sage elects,
consequently, one may not touch him, one harms him through this!
It is not about that one's will,
but about that one's "abnormality",
and in simple language, an "illness";
ובלשון הפשוט א "חולאת";
Therefore, first of all, one must do all that is dependent on him to heal him from his illness;
איז צום אלעם ערשטן דארף מען טאן כל התלוי בו אים אויסהיילן ממחלתו;
and if he is so confused,
that it appears to him that the thing most harmful to him
is a good thing
(because of the momentary pleasure)
this is all the more reason to invest oneself in healing him and explaining to him that this is harmful!
And a part of this explanation is that here the debate of who is guilty and who is not guilty is not relevant;
און א חלק פון דער הסברה איז דאס גופא אז דא איז ניט נוגע דער פלפול ווער איז דער שולדיקער און ווער איז ניט דער שולדיקער;
one only judges regarding the reality as it is:
whether this is a matter of settling the world,
a good and satisfying thing also after the action,
or this is only a temporary thing!
And furthermore:
In this itself
(that he claims that this is a momentary pleasure)
there is also a doubt whether he truly means it,
or it no longer befits him to say that he made a mistake,
and he has grasped onto the truth!
And when one will explain the matters to him properly, it is a certain thing that one will succeed,
since after all, one finds oneself in the world of the Holy One, blessed be He,
of Whom it is said "Hashem is good and upright"120,
and "one who comes to purify is aided"121,
and especially according to the precision of Chassidus122,
that it does not say "one who comes to be purified"
(and the like),
but "one who comes to purify",
meaning that he comes to purify others,
and then one has special assistance from Above.
Based on all that was said, it is understood,
that notwithstanding that until now
(for reasons that are not understood at all)
one has engaged in a crooked path, there is still time to correct it,
and better one hour earlier.
However, one must first of all clarify,
that this is not a matter of contentiousness,
but the truth is so,
that certain people are born with undesirable traits,
and since "a person is close to himself"123, this also biases their intellect,
and they do not see the harm in the matter.
And one must also emphasize the point in the matter,
that according to the straight intellect of all the nations of the world, this trait
(about which we are speaking)
is not a normal trait.
And this is not connected to a particular religion, rather all agree on the matter.
A long time ago there were idol worshippers, and a part of their worship consisted of this matter124,
but the idol worshippers have completely ceased,
and as the Rambam brings in the Moreh Nevuchim125, a guide for the perplexed of his generation and for all generations after him, how was the conduct of the idol worshippers in those generations,
and afterwards their memory was obliterated from the earth,
and all admit that their conduct was completely improper.
Only a few individuals remained who, for whatever reason, are born with this trait
(or they were "captured among the nations" (the "nations" about which the Rambam speaks) and the like,
or it caught on for some reason in the desire of their soul)
but this does not mean that this is a desirable trait.
And in this, one must also emphasize that one does not intend to offend their honor and the like, and therefore one brings the example of one who has the inborn trait of tearing out the hair from his head.
That this is also according to the known concept,
that sometimes (G-d forbid) a child is born with a trait of stealing;
אז אמאל ווערט (ר"ל) א קינד געבוירן מיט א תכונה פון גנב'נען;
they indeed made a nice word for it in Greek and the like (with all nice things), but this does not change the reality,
that this is theft in its simple sense,
and one must correct it.
And as we see in practice, that
(although they give it a nice name and the like,
nevertheless they are not satisfied with it, rather)
they seek and find ways to correct it,
and the deed is the main thing,
there are so many men and women who were born with this trait,
and they were not deterred by the effort involved,
and they did not stop when the first time the child
(the boy or the girl)
cried,
until it was "and he shall return the stolen object which he stole" and the like.
But this is not relevant to our matter because when one will compare the aforementioned trait with the matter of theft,
there will be an outcry,
how is it possible to call him a "thief";
היתכן אז מ'רופט אים בשם "גנב";
therefore they explicitly give the example of one who tears his hair from his head,
with which he indeed harms no one,
but he and his father and mother and the entire world know that he is harming himself!].
And this is the mission and task that has been given to the parents or educators and guides of those with this trait to set them straight to the truth.
And one is certain,
as has been seen in the past,
that they will succeed,
because in this they have assistance from Above.
And on the contrary:
That such a matter has become ingrained in the nature of their soul is not
(G-d forbid)
(ר"ל)
in order to darken them, but rather so that the parents and the influencers can influence them in pleasant ways and in peaceful ways,
and set them straight to the truth,
that this is his true benefit and the benefit of his sons and daughters that he may have.
And here also enters the lesson of "he who spares his rod hates his son":
In order for the parents and educators and the like to succeed in the matter, they must indeed be careful that it be in pleasant ways and in peaceful ways,
with the aforementioned parables and examples,
which show that one does not wish to mistreat or stifle someone, but on the contrary,
one wishes to protect him from a situation and condition that will harm him
(as above at length)
But on the other hand,
one must do everything possible to actually prevent him from this undesirable matter,
and one may not allow him to educate himself and the like.
And as the simple understanding of the matter, that a person may not place himself in a situation and condition of trial!
Even when he is dealing with "small things" over which he has control and mastery, it could be that in a moment his evil inclination will seize him and explain to him that "who can say to him what do you do" and the like,
he may do a matter that harms another and
(which is no less important)
harms himself,
because its impression is noticeable and "once a person commits a transgression and repeats it...
it becomes permitted to him",
one will need a special effort to nullify it etc.
So too is it understood in our matter, that what was publicly proclaimed, that one may not meddle with it,
for reasons that are not the place to repeat here,
because they are entirely contrary to the simple good in the physical and material sense of the person who has this desire, it is itself,
as stated,
a matter of harm.
And certainly one must do everything to prevent this, as we see in every settlement that conducts itself in ways of righteousness and ways of honesty,
that when someone goes onto a bridge and wants to throw himself off
(in simple language "committing suicide" G-d forbid),
they gather the entire police force of the city,
with the fire trucks,
and they go about all ways and means to prevent him from harming himself!
And when a certain time passes, they then have gratitude and thanks from him himself,
but not so if
(G-d forbid)
(ר"ל)
the matter is in the opposite manner.
And this is not the place to elaborate on all this, nor to demonstrate how great is the double and multiplied darkness of exile,
that when one can nullify it in pleasant ways and in peaceful ways, nevertheless there must be a great labor to correct it.
At least one should know,
that through speaking about it once and a second time,
until "a hundred times and one",
indeed in pleasant and peaceful ways,
but with the appropriate force and with the true reasons,
it is certain that "the word of our G-d shall stand forever",
and "who can say to Him, what do You do",
and one will succeed in this through the assistance from Above.
And especially since this is a matter in which all nations are equal,
because it is a damage for all who are called by the name of man,
as explained in the history of man on earth,
without any distinction of any religion or nation etc.
[with the sole exception of a part of idol worshipers,
who called it by the name of the opposite of impurity etc. ].
And where one need not use a sharp word, this is not relevant;
און דארט וואו מ'דארף ניט נוצן א שארפן ווארט איז דאס ניט נוגע;
it is only relevant to carry out the matter,
and better one hour earlier,
and for this the aforementioned explanation is sufficient,
and give to the wise and he will become wiser,
one will certainly convey it in the language of the country,
and in a style appropriate to a certain place and a certain circle etc.
And as mentioned,
since this is a true matter,
and a truth that is revealed to the eye of all, it is certain that eventually "truth
(even)
will spring forth from the earth",
and especially since one has the assistance from Above,
that it should be "for a dwelling He formed it",
in pleasant ways and in ways of peace,
and better one hour earlier.
And regarding the children of Israel, this should be together with all the commandments,
the lightest of the light and the most severe of the severe,
and with utmost perfection,
and in the language of the Megillah "the Jews upheld and accepted" "they upheld what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah,
where at the time of the giving of the Torah all the souls of those before and after until the end of all generations stood there
(as brought in Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer ),
and one has the story of the Megillah with the promise that "their memory shall not cease from their seed",
and it will be "a document of redemption from redemption",
consequently "the spirit of impurity I will remove from the land",
and "the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the L-rd as the waters cover the sea",
speedily in our days, literally.
We spoke earlier about the importance of the matter of educating sons and daughters,
and the special connection to the days of Purim,
when Mordechai brought about the nullification of the decree through his gathering of Jewish children who said that they go with Mordechai,
that "Mordechai would not bow nor prostrate himself",
until in a manner of self-sacrifice,
which all of this was founded upon Torah,
"You have established strength".
That the matter of education
(just like Torah in general)
encompasses not only the aspect of study in a person,
but rather, the study must come out in deed,
in this lies the greatness of study,
that which "leads to action",
the deeds that they shall do and those that they shall not do.
That this is connected to the inner and central point of the days of Purim "they upheld what they had already accepted" and in a manner of "their memory shall not cease from their seed",
the instruction and special effort in the matter of education.
And this includes
(as above)
both education of "sucklings and infants" in years,
and "sucklings and infants" in knowledge,
as discussed several times at length.
That here one must beware:
There are those who specifically seek matters that should be with a great storm and the greatest storm etc.
One must know, however, that first and foremost comes the matter of "the regular offerings in their order",
and only afterwards comes "the additional offerings according to their law".
And regarding our matter, it means,
that first and foremost one must beware of the matter of education in its simple sense:
Those who are here must know,
that in New York itself there are
(G-d forbid)
(ר"ל)
tens of thousands of Jewish children
(and many more than that)
who receive no Jewish education at all! Not even the shape of an Aleph!
Then there are tens of thousands of children who do receive "Judaism",
but only "chapter headings" and the Aleph-Bet of Judaism etc.!
And this is not the place to elaborate on the alarming matter!
That in such a city, one cannot say that there is a lack of money!
It is only lacking that one should begin to occupy himself with this matter, and he will immediately see how one can be successful in it,
and he can be
(in addition to the "Yissachar")
also the "Zevulun",
the money-maker,
or he can create or find etc. another as a "Zevulun",
and it will be "Rejoice, Zevulun, in your going out, and Yissachar, in your tents",
and both together will rejoice because they will see "good fruit of their labor".
And particularly if the education will be worthy of its name and content, one makes the one being educated in such a way that he becomes a "candle to illuminate",
"a fruit tree producing fruit according to its kind",
that the one being educated will also become an "activist",
particularly in the area of kosher education and education in holiness and matters of Judaism etc.
And it will be in a manner of increasing and going and light,
until he will be like the "infants" who said "Take counsel and it shall be foiled",
all the counsels of those who assist this education with an evil eye will be nullified and foiled,
or those who hinder this education.
And since "God is with us" it is certain that "Even to old age I am He, and even to hoar hairs I will carry",
that it is not a matter from which one needs to be frightened,
because "Do not fear sudden terror",
it is a matter that has no substance at all and "I will carry and deliver".
And it is a certain thing that one will be successful and establish generations in Israel of "the hosts of the Lord",
beginning from "sucklings and infants" in years,
and then also "sucklings and infants" in knowledge,
and so forth,
year after year and age after age.
And we will go with all of them together to greet our righteous Mashiach,
and it will be "All the hosts of the Lord went out" as it was at the Exodus from Egypt.
And as discussed several times what is stated in the Midrashim,
that just as in the days of your going out from the land of Egypt not a single Jew remained in exile
(men, women, and children)
so too will it be in the redemption from this last exile,
this exile of ours,
that not a single Jew will remain in exile.
And "with our youth and with our elders etc. with our sons and with our daughters" we will ascend,
"and they came up with the clouds of heaven",
"in one moment and in one instant",
to our holy land,
"a land which etc. the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year",
and in a situation and state of "the Lord your God will enlarge your border",
and there itself,
"from strength to strength",
until "he appears before God in Zion",
in Jerusalem,
the city of the great King,
and "on the holy mount in Jerusalem",
and in "the Sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established",
And all these matters "and they came up with the clouds of heaven",
and out of joy and a glad heart.
It is also customary to connect the farbrengen with the Torah lessons that are connected to the day on which the farbrengen takes place.
Among the lessons themselves, the custom is,
that first one focuses on the lessons that have already been disseminated,
and afterwards on the lesson of the Rambam that was instituted recently;
און לאחרי זה אויפן שיעור הרמב"ם שהונהג לאחרונה;
however, since today's lesson in the Rambam has a special connection to the days of Purim
(as will be explained)
we will begin with the lesson of the Rambam
(and particularly since we still owe a continuation to the explanation in the lesson of the Rambam from the Fast of Esther).
In the lesson of the Rambam of today, the Rambam speaks about the matter of free choice,
that all deeds of man are with free choice.
And he explains,
that "Permission is granted to every person; if he wishes to incline himself to the good path and be righteous, the permission is in his hand,
and if he wishes to incline himself to the evil path and be wicked, the permission is in his hand,
this is what is written in the Torah: 'Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil...'
Let this thought not pass through your mind...
that the Holy One, blessed be He, decrees upon a person from the beginning of his creation to be righteous or wicked,
this is not so; rather, every person is fit to be righteous...
or wicked...
and this matter is a great principle and it is a pillar of the Torah and the commandment...
If God were to decree upon a person to be righteous or wicked...
how could He command us through the prophets: 'Do this' and 'Do not do this'...
and from the beginning of his creation it would already have been decreed upon him...
and what place would there be for the entire Torah, and by what judgment and what justice would the wicked be punished and the righteous be rewarded?"
Here one immediately sees the connection to Purim:
The content of the matter of Purim is understood from its name "therefore they called these days Purim after the name of the lot",
that "Pur is the lot",
the matter of the lot
(and as explained in several places,
how the content of the miracle of Purim is connected with the aspect of lot (as above section 13)).
What is the matter of "lot"?
When one goes to divide an inheritance,
there can be a division in a manner that is dependent either on human intellect or on human knowledge;
קען זיין א חלוקה באופן וואס איז תלוי אדער אין שכל האדם אדער אין ידיעת האדם;
afterwards there is a manner of division
(and so forth)
that is not connected with knowledge and intellect but it is solely dependent on the will of the person,
or in style and other language,
a division according to the lot,
where with a lot one cannot know how "the lot will fall".
That this matter also exists in the service of God as explained in many places in the elucidation of the matter "fortunate are we, how good is our portion, how pleasant is our lot, and how beautiful is our inheritance",
that the matter of the lot is the most exalted aspect that is above all the forces.
And as also explained in the discourses of our Rebbe the Maharash and the Tzemach Tzedek on "but by lot shall the land be divided",
that although there was a level in the division of the land that was connected with "Urim and Thummim",
and a matter that was dependent on calculation and value of each field and portion etc., however the highest manner of division is the matter of "lot".
That according to this the connection with "free choice" is understood, because the matter of "free choice" is also connected with an aspect that is above intellect and knowledge
(and as follows),
and it derives only from "the desire of God"
(and as follows),
as the Rambam explains there.
Further the Rambam writes:
"Perhaps you will say, but does not the Holy One, blessed be He, know everything that will be, and before it will be, He knows that this one will be righteous or wicked...
if He knows that he will be righteous, it is impossible that he will not be righteous"?
And he elaborates "know that the answer to this question is longer than the earth and broader than the sea",
and he elaborates how the matter is not within the power of man to understand it etc.
And it is known the question in this matter that the Raavad asks "this author did not conduct himself in the manner of the wise,
that a person begins a matter and does not know how to complete it, and he began with questions and difficulties and left the matter as a difficulty and returned it to faith"?
And there is already a discussion among the commentators of the Rambam to reconcile his words etc.
And as discussed at length, several explanations in this matter,
that in general there is the explanation in this matter,
that the knowledge above does not compel the choice,
because it is a knowledge that comes after the choice and as a result of it;
ווייל דאס איז א ידיעה וואס קומט לאחרי הבחירה וכתוצאה ממנה;
only because with the Most High past and future are equal, with Him there can be knowledge before the action as a result of the action that will be afterwards.
But in today's lesson we see a new explanation,
a new thing and a new reason in this matter,
and as discussed several times,
that the most precious and exalted things one runs through.
The Rambam writes "and do not wonder and say how can a person do all that he desires and his actions be given over to him, and can a thing be done in the world without the permission of its Creator and His desire,
and the verse says 'whatever God desires He does in heaven and on earth'"? And he answers "know that everything He does according to His desire,
and even though our actions are given over to us,
how so,
just as the Creator desired that fire and wind ascend upward...
and likewise the rest of the creatures of the world to follow their nature that He desired,
so too He desired that a person have his authority in his hand and all his actions be given over to him, and there be for him neither coercer nor puller, but he of himself and with his intellect that God gave him does all that a person can do".
That is to say,
the Rambam explains,
that what a person can choose with his free choice to do any matter,
is because "just as the Creator desired...
so too He desired that a person have his authority in his hand".
That the matter of "desire" in the holy tongue is much deeper than will,
and is a prior matter in will itself,
the innerness of the will. And because from the perspective of the desire of God a person must have free choice,
consequently a person can do also contrary to the will of God and so forth.
That according to this the question falls away of why knowledge does not compel the choice, because such is the desire of God,
that the choice should be free,
consequently there is no thing that can compel the choice*.
As mentioned earlier,
now we will also complete the explanation in this lesson of the Rambam from the Fast of Esther,
that because of the fast and the shortness of time, on the Fast of Esther they spoke only about the beginning of the matter.
The point of the matter was,
that on the surface, the words of the Rambam regarding the definition of the matter of repentance require strong explanation,
where he writes "And what is repentance...
and the Knower of mysteries shall testify concerning him that he will never return to this sin again".
Which on the surface is the most novel thing:
repentance in its simple sense is connected to a specific act of sin,
as in "and he shall return the stolen object which he stole";
ע"ד "והשיב את הגזילה אשר גזל";
here, however, the Rambam connects the matter of repentance with the general conduct of a person in the future,
that the definition of repentance is,
"that he shall not return to this sin ever"?
And especially when one sees in practice that it is not so:
The law is in the Laws of Testimony,
that when a person does repentance,
his testimony is accepted,
even though we do not know whether "the Knower of mysteries shall testify concerning him that he will never return to this sin again",
because "the essence of repentance is in the heart" and "man sees with the eyes and the Lord sees into the heart",
the court cannot know what will be in the future;
ב"ד קענען ניט וויסן וואס וועט זיין בעתיד;
nevertheless,
there are conditions in repentance,
that when a person fulfills the conditions he becomes fit for testimony.
For example:
"From when is the return of dice players,
from the time they break their dice
(meaning the aforementioned instruments of play, which are dice)
and they return with a complete return that they will not do [it] even for free";
ויחזרו בהם חזרה גמורה שלא יעשו אפילו בחינם";
and when the dice players break their dice and have complete regret over their deeds,
their testimony is accepted and money is extracted
(not only money that is in doubt,
but also)
from his possession through them.
It is therefore a simple matter,
that the court has no ability to know,
that their repentance is in the manner of "the Knower of mysteries shall testify concerning him that he will never return to this sin again";
אז זייער תשובה איז באופן פון "יעיד עליו יודע תעלומות שלא ישוב לזה החטא לעולם";
they do not know how he will conduct himself tens of years after this. And nevertheless his repentance is accepted,
and he becomes fit for testimony!
[And especially since one cannot know what will be the conduct of a person after this, as it is stated explicitly in Ezekiel,
that just as "when a wicked man turns from his wickedness which he has done and does justice and righteousness, he shall keep his soul alive",
so too it can be the opposite "and if a man be righteous and does justice and righteousness",
"and the righteous man turns from his righteousness and does iniquity etc. and in his sin which he has sinned he shall die",
that is, there can be a person who is a righteous man all his days,
and at the end of his days he turns from his righteousness etc.].
Thus we see not only regarding the court,
but also regarding Above
(where "the Lord sees into the heart"),
that repentance helped in nullifying decrees from Above,
even though after this there was "return to this sin".
And as is related in several places in the Tanach,
that the conduct of the entirety of the people of Israel was not as it should be,
and afterwards they did repentance,
and this brought about the nullification of the decree
(as is related in the Tanach),
and after this
(in the generations after that)
a later prophet came and in his days the matter repeated itself again.
For the Gemara says in Horayot that "a community does not die". It turns out,
that in all the generations it is the same community
(with the laws pertaining to this)
and nevertheless the repentance in one generation helped to nullify the decree,
even though there was "return to this sin" after this.
Moreover:
It is known what the Gemara
(in Kiddushin)
rules as law,
that one who betroths a woman on condition that I am righteous
(according to most versions,
and according to the version of the Or Zarua (cited in the Tanya) "a complete righteous man")
she is betrothed
(doubtfully)
lest he contemplated repentance in his heart;
שמא הרהר תשובה בלבו;
and the doubt is only because it is a doubt whether he contemplated repentance in his heart;
וואס דער ספק איז בלויז ווייל ס'איז א ספק צי הרהר תשובה בלבו;
but if one is certain that he contemplated repentance in his heart, she is definitely betrothed.
And on the surface:
According to the words of the Rambam that the definition of repentance is that "the Knower of mysteries shall testify concerning him that he will never return to this sin again", how can this be in "a moment like the blink of an eye"?
There is no reality of a "human being",
that he should be able to contemplate in one moment in such a manner that "he will not return to this sin ever"!
There is indeed a reality like Rabbi Elazar ben Dordia who "acquires his world in one hour", but "the Torah speaks of the majority"!
According to this, it is also understood that one cannot answer,
that the source of the Rambam is as he himself brings,
from the verse "and we will no longer say 'our god' to the work of our hands." And as explained in the Pesikta and other Midrashim,
that the verses before this *192 are "Return, Israel, to the Lord your God... Take words with you and return to the Lord,"
and when the Jews ask "who testifies about us," they are told that the Most High says "I testify about you,"
and from this it is understood that the "I testify" also refers to "and we will no longer say 'our god' to the work of our hands,"
which means that "the Knower of mysteries will testify about him
("I testify")
that he will never return to this sin"
(- "and we will no longer say 'our god' to the work of our hands").
For although here we see that there can be a reality of repentance in a manner that the Most High testifies etc., but we do not see this in the halachic ruling,
that the definition of repentance is not in such a manner
(as above at length)?
Seemingly, one could explain the words of the Rambam in the manner that one explains the language of the Alter Rebbe in the Tanya regarding the service of the Beinoni
(that "the trait of the Beinoni is the trait of every person, and after every person we are drawn"),
that "he never committed a transgression in his life and he will never commit one,"
and the explanation of this is,
that according to his standing and situation in the present,
at this moment,
he is in such a manner that "he never committed a transgression in his life"
(because he does repentance for the past),
and "he will never commit one."
And regarding this one can also say,
that what the definition of repentance according to the system of the Rambam is in a manner that "he will never return to this sin,"
means
(not that it will be so in actuality in the future, but rather)
according to his situation in the present,
that from the perspective of his standing and situation and the matter of repentance, he will never commit this sin.
However, since "a person's evil inclination overcomes him every day...
the wicked one watches the righteous one and seeks to kill him,"
consequently, it can be that tomorrow there will come a "new evil inclination" with new claims,
with a new portion in the world,
consequently, this is a new war with new war strategies, with a new test, one cannot know what will be from the perspective of that situation in the future.
However, this does not explain the language of the Rambam, because the Rambam says, after all,
that this is not only the standing and situation of the person,
but rather that "the Knower of mysteries will testify about him etc.,"
that this is a testimony from the Most High! And as explained in the Yerushalmi etc.
Therefore,
despite the simple meaning of the language of the Rambam,
I see no other way than what follows,
and with an introduction:
In repentance there are many levels,
from one extreme to the other:
There is a level in repentance when "they coerce...
him until he says 'I want,'"
and consequently it becomes "his will"
(as if he did repentance),
and regarding the offering of a sacrifice it is called "you shall sacrifice it for your acceptance,"
and it is in the category of "one who repents from his knowledge" even though this is through the coercion of the court.
Afterwards, there is a higher level in repentance that comes
(not because of the coercion of the court, but rather)
because of fear of punishment,
punishment below or punishment above,
and above this is repentance from love etc.,
as the Gemara in Yoma distinguishes,
that there can be repentance from fear,
whereby "intentional sins become like unintentional ones,"
and there can be repentance from love,
up to love with delights,
afterwards there is the level in repentance that the Rambam calls "complete repentance," "that a matter by which he transgressed comes to his hand and it is in his power to do it, and he separates and does not do it because of the repentance."
When the Rambam in the book of Laws speaks about the definition of repentance, he speaks about all the manners in repentance.
[And in the manner that he says (in the lesson of these days) that "although repentance...
is always good,
during the ten days...
it is especially good...
Yom Kippur is a time of repentance for all etc.," we see, after all, several levels in repentance].
Consequently, what the Rambam says is understood: "And what is repentance...
and the Knower of mysteries will testify about him that he will never return to this sin,"
because here he speaks about the ultimate perfection of repentance.
However, this does not contradict all those laws in Choshen Mishpat etc. that speak about repentance, because in these matters the ultimate perfection of repentance is not relevant,
but rather a lower level in repentance is sufficient.
It is indeed a great difficulty to say that this is the intention of the Rambam,
because it is not implied from his language and from the totality of the continuation of the laws, but due to the severity of the aforementioned difficulties from the laws of testimony and the law of betrothal on condition that I am righteous etc.,
it is close to saying,
despite the difficulty in the matter,
that he intends here the ultimate perfection of repentance.
And regarding our matter of the nullification of the exile and the true and complete redemption:
In order to go out from exile, there must be only nullification of sins,
the cause of the exile,
and in the manner that the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeret HaTeshuvah
(regarding which it should be noted that half of it (or a large part of it) is actually laws in the revealed part of Torah)
that "one does not mention to him a thing or half a thing on the Day of Judgment,"
then for this it is sufficient what the Alter Rebbe says to the Admur HaZaken,
that "the mitzvah of repentance from the Torah is the abandonment of sin alone"
(not fasts and afflictions,
and not other matters)
consequently the "thing" is immediately nullified,
the exile,
which is the result of the "sins,"
as the statement "and because of our sins we were exiled from our land,"
even if this is in one hour and in one moment,
and without any length of contemplation in the matter,
that the "we were exiled from our land" is immediately nullified,
and the true and complete redemption comes immediately through our righteous Mashiach,
and "the earth will be filled with knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea."
Discourse (like a talk)
beginning with the phrase "on that night."
It is also customary to speak about the campaigns,
and in recent days about "the Purim campaign."
And although we have already entered "Shushan Purim," (a)
if there are those who have
(for whatever reason it may be)
taken loans in order to have Purim according to its law,
one must repay the loan,
consequently helping to repay the debt is not a matter of the "Purim campaign"; and (b)
there is a matter that is time-dependent in connection with Purim, as the Alter Rebbe brings in his Shulchan Aruch
(the laws of Pesach at their beginning)
that "from Purim and onward they will expound the laws of Pesach,"
according to which it follows,
that the "Pesach campaign" itself is a continuation of the "Purim campaign."
And the "Pesach campaign" is greater in quantity than the "Purim campaign,"
for the "Purim campaign" is connected only with one day
(indeed with "sending portions each man to his fellow and gifts to the poor" and "until one does not know" without any restrictions,
and especially according to how the Rambam elaborates on this regarding gifts to the poor even in relation to sending portions, but it is still one day or two days),
but not so the "Pesach campaign," for it is "for seven days you shall eat matzot,"
and in the diaspora it is "eight days."
And especially that one begins with "but on the first day" "but a portion,"
the eve of Pesach at midday,
at which time the prohibition of eating chametz is already in effect,
and the preparation for all this must be several days before this,
connected with "money for wheat" and the like.
From all this it is understood how the time compels and gives strength to carry out in completeness and with joy and with a good heart the "Pesach campaign" and all that pertains to it,
both in spirituality and in physicality.
And one should not forget, heaven forbid,
about the study of "the laws of the festival" in its simple sense,
the laws of Pesach,
from thirty days before the festival.
The Alter Rebbe indeed says there in the Shulchan Aruch that "in these generations" it is "that the sage does not teach his students the laws because everything is written in a book";
דער אלטער רבי זאגט טאקע דארט אין שו"ע 213 אז "בדורות הללו" איז "אין החכם שונה לתלמידיו הלכות לפי שהכל כתוב בספר";
but it is "a mitzvah upon each and every one that he study the laws of the festival before the festival"...
For when the book is printed, it can be that the book remains on the shelf,
so the book is one thing and the shelf is a second thing and the person is a third thing;
איז דער ספר איין זאך און די פאליצע א צווייטע זאך און דער אדם א דריטע זאך;
when he takes down the book from the shelf and sits down and studies it,
then it is not that he studies the book, but the book studies him
(as the saying that the leader of our generation used to repeat),
then it is discernible in him that he becomes a new reality, at that time the ultimate purpose of the creation of the "shelf" is fulfilled,
and the ultimate purpose of the book, for "great is study that brings to action,"
and the person who studies the laws studies it in a way that this influences his actions in practice,
both in the line of "turn from evil" and in the line of "do good."
Until the matter of "turn away from evil and do good" in inwardness begins,
according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov,
that from the "evil" one makes "good",
which is indeed connected to the content of Passover,
that at the beginning of the service on Passover,
"turn away from evil" from leaven is done,
and "do good" is the eating of matzah,
and in the completeness of the service of the Festival of Weeks,
which comes as a continuation and result of the Counting of the Omer,
which begins on the Festival of Passover,
one transforms the "leaven" into good, into the "two loaves",
as explained in various places.
And as stated above, the beginning of this service begins "from the morrow of the Sabbath"
("from the morrow of the festival," "from the morrow of Passover"),
and before this,
on the first day of Passover,
and before this on the eve of Passover,
as explained at length in the books,
and it is understood simply.
And in practical terms, the intention is that one should immediately begin to act in all campaigns,
all the more so,
in the campaign of "the time compels" to help pay off the debts of Purim,
and further, and primarily in quantity simply,
regarding the Passover campaign.
And this will also add to the success in all the campaigns,
because every good matter assists the other.
Until from all these good matters there becomes one single thing, the primary and inward commandment,
the true and complete redemption.
Which is indeed brought about through the fact that one inserts the "Master of the World" into "exile",
that is, one inserts the matters of Judaism that were given from the Almighty into matters of the profane and exile;
ד.ה. מ'שטעלט אריין די ענינים פון אידישקייט וואס זיינען געגעבן געווארן פון אויבערשטן אין עניני חול וגלות;
consequently, from "exile" becomes redemption,
and from "exile" becomes "the redemption of Israel" and "the redemption of the Divine Presence",
together with the general, true, and complete redemption,
and speedily in our days, literally.
Before one proceeds to the "collection" for "the Rabbi's fund," it is indeed also customary to pause for the daily portion of Chumash.
First of all, there is the instruction from the general theme of the weekly portion,
the portion of Tzav,
and as discussed in the "words of rebuke" of the Fast of Esther,
the eve of the days of Purim,
that the matter of "Tzav" is
(according to Rashi's interpretation)
"Tzav is nothing other than an expression of urging, immediately and for generations,"
which both matters (a)
"urging" and (b)
"for generations" are essential matters in the entirety of the Torah,
consequently,
when the days of Purim come,
when "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah,
in a manner that there was a "great protest against the Torah",
the matter of urging must be in all matters of Purim,
and in a manner of a continuous action,
until an action for generations,
until an action for generations of generations.
In addition to this, there is the study from today's Chumash portion from the third to the fourth in the portion of Tzav:
The beginning of this portion
(and the general content of the portion)
is "And this is the law of the peace offering, etc.",
that the matter of peace offering is
(as Rashi explains before this,
at the first time that the term peace offering is brought)
"that they place peace in the world,
meaning peace offerings, for there is peace in them for the altar, for the priests, and for the owners."
Here one immediately sees the connection to Purim,
as discussed above at length,
that the content of Purim is the matter of unity,
that it should be the opposite of "scattered and divided",
until the matter of "one nation" becomes revealed even externally,
from the aspect of bodily matters, which is the matter of "peace in the world",
and peace among Jews,
the content of the second interpretation.
That the content of Rashi's interpretation in the service of man means that not only do offerings bring peace in the world in its entirety,
but also among Jews themselves,
one makes peace among the Jews who are related to the altar,
the Jews who are in the category of "priests",
and the Jews who are in the category of "owners".
That is, that they all become included in the same "offering",
that in all of them is brought about "and he shall slaughter" is nothing other than "and he shall draw",
the matter of "draw me, we will run after you",
the drawing with cords of love to the realm of holiness and Divinity,
until love with delights,
and this prepares the other part for eating by the priests and the owners.
And as is known the words of the Ramban
(brought earlier),
that the content of a sacrifice is,
"that a person should think when he does all these that he has sinned against his God with his body and his soul and it is fitting for him to spill his blood and burn his body were it not for the kindness of the Creator Who took from him a substitute... his blood
(of the sacrifice)
in place of his blood, a soul in place of a soul" from which it is understood,
that the matter of the sacrifice in the service of man is
(in addition to "diminishing his fat and his blood" through fasting and the like,
also)
self-sacrifice,
"and it is fitting that he should spill his blood etc.",
the love to the utmost for G-dliness.
And this is another connection and relation to the days of Purim whose essence of Purim is indeed self-sacrifice,
that one gives oneself over entirely,
which is the content of the burnt offering
(the beginning of all sacrifices and the conclusion of all sacrifices),
that it is "entirely consumed",
self-sacrifice to the utmost.
And as explained in many places,
that the "daily offering of the morning would atone for the sins of the night and the daily offering of the afternoon for
(the sins)
of the day"
[and it can be said that this is also the reason for that which "if you see a Torah scholar who committed a sin at night, do not think ill of him by day",
since they had offered the daily sacrifice in the meantime],
until "and it shall be accepted for him to atone for him",
as a true favor,
until in a manner of desire.
And this applies to all Jews who are all "Torah scholars",
as it is said "and all your children shall be students of the L-rd",
consequently it is certain that "do not think ill of him by day",
because the daily offerings certainly atoned.
And especially at the time of the daily offerings they also come from the aspect of the High Priest in soul,
the singular essence of the soul,
as discussed in the lesson on Chumash of the Fast of Esther in explanation of the matter of the High Priest's griddle-cake offering which one offers half of it in the morning and half of it in the afternoon in the manner of the daily offerings.
As mentioned above,
this is the place to mention regarding the conclusion
(after the melodies)
regarding charity.
And especially since the establishment of "Kupat Rabbeinu" was connected with Purim,
as is known the talk about this,
as already printed in "Torat Shalom" the length about this.
And those who wish may add their name and their mother's name,
in order to take the notes to the grave of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Nasi of our generation.
And very soon it will be "awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust",
and they among them,
And we will celebrate Passover,
and before this,
the portion of the month and the sacrifice of the month and the sacrifice of the red heifer
(with the tenth red heifer that the Mashiach our righteousness will perform),
"and we shall eat there from the sacrifices and from the Passover offerings",
And the main point is that it comes into actuality,
and we will go "with our young and with our old etc. with our sons and with our daughters",
a great congregation,
in one moment and in an instant,
"as the blink of an eye",
and the children of Israel go out with a high hand,
And with joy and a good heart.
They sang a preparatory melody,
the melody of the Alter Rebbe
(the fourth time it came a),
"Nye Zhuritzy Khloptzy".
As is customary in farbrengens such as this,
after the final blessing they will also distribute through the "tankists" to each one a dollar in order to give for charity.
And whoever adds, they add to him,
and how good that one should give this on Shushan Purim,
and in any case during the continuation and close to the days of Purim.
For charity has a special connection to Purim,
as mentioned above regarding the virtue of "gifts to the poor",
and the virtue therein regarding the sending of portions,
as the Rambam elaborates on this.
And after this or before this they will give the notes
(for the collection).
With this they will also conclude with the melody "He will build the Holy Temple speedily in our days".
And this has a connection to the 14th of Adar when the lesson of Tehillim is the chapter "For Solomon, O G-d, give Your judgments to the king and Your righteousness to the king's son",
and several details regarding the Mashiach our righteousness,
and the conclusion of the chapter is "Amen and Amen,
the prayers of David son of Yishai are ended" that the role of "David son of Yishai" ends,
and the matter of the singular essence of the soul comes,
the Mashiach our righteousness.
And with this the conclusion of the lesson is "awesome to the kings of the earth",
which is the matter of the days of Mashiach in their perfection,
when "and the kingdom shall be the L-rd's" and "then I will turn to the peoples a pure language that they may all call upon the name of the L-rd to serve Him with one accord",
as the conclusion of the book Yad HaChazakah,
"which Moses made before the eyes of all Israel".
And may it be His will,
that we should continue the joy of "until one does not know" of Purim throughout the entire year,
and together with the joy we will also have throughout the entire year the "light and joy and gladness and honor" with all the interpretations thereof,
and out of joy and a good heart.
And after the melody "He will build the Holy Temple" and the final blessing they will distribute the dollars through the "tankists",
And furthermore, the main point is that there is no world of action that the time should already come when "great action,"
together with our righteous Mashiach,
in the blink of an eye,
with joy and a good heart.
His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, commanded the holy shliach, may he live, to play "Yehi ratzon... that the Holy Temple be built speedily in our days, and give us our portion in Your Torah."
Afterward he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, distributed to the "tankists," may they live, dollar bills,
in order to distribute to each one of those present, may they live, one bill,
with the intent to give it
(or its equivalent)
to charity.
Before his departure, he began to play "For with joy you shall go out."
