English translation 1
It has been spoken about many times,
It has been spoken about many times,
that in every day and in every matter of Judaism and Torah and mitzvos there are several matters.
So too there are several matters in this present day:
a) It is the Shabbos that comes after the day of the hilula of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Nasi of our generation, on the tenth of Shevat
("the tenth shall be holy" 1).
b) It is the fifteenth of the month –
when the moon stands in its fullness 2.
And in these matters on this day
(and on every day)
there are two points:
Since the several matters come together in one day,
it is understood that on one hand there is between them a common denominator,
and moreover –
one assists the other;
איינער איז מסייע צום צווייטן;
on the other hand they are separate matters,
and the proof –
that in some years,
when there is a different calendar determination,
they occur on separate days.
And although it has been spoken about many times that when they come together in one day there is from this an eternal lesson and instruction for all years
(also for when the calendar determination is in a different manner),
nevertheless they are in actuality separate matters
(as understood from that which they sometimes occur separately),
and also from the calendar determination when they occur on separate days there is an eternal lesson and instruction for all years.
And particularly when the matters that come together on this specific day are "once a year" *2,
in which there are two extremes:
On one hand it is "once a year",
it is a day in the year,
which is drawn into the entire year 3:
On the other hand, however, it is "once a year",
the essence and intensity of the revelation is on this one and only day
("once a year"),
and to such an extent that the matter of this day is revealed with intensity until it has the power to draw this matter throughout the entire year 4,
from which is understood the greatness of the elevation specifically of this day.
In the matters that exist on this Shabbos itself, one must proceed in order:
First speak about the matter on this day as it comes in sequence to the days before it,
and afterwards about the matter of this day itself,
and in our case:
First one must speak about that which the Shabbos comes after the day of the hilula,
and afterwards about the day itself,
which is the fifteenth of the month when the moon stands in its fullness.
And although also the matter of the fifteenth of the month comes in sequence to the days of the month before it, beginning from Rosh Chodesh –
nevertheless,
the superiority of this day
(when the moon stands in its fullness)
is specifically on this day,
not as a continuation of the days before it.
However, from the aspect of this detail on this day that it is the day of Shabbos,
it comes in sequence to the days before it.
And the explanation:
On the day of Shabbos the elevation and completion of the weekdays before it occurs,
that "each day does its work" 5,
and on Shabbos they are elevated in the manner of "Vayechulu" 6 from the term elevation 7 and from the term delight 7,
as it is written "the delight of days, You called it" 8.
And the elevation on Shabbos is even higher when in the weekdays there is a special day that is "once a year",
in our case –
the tenth of Shevat.
In addition to that which on this Shabbos there is an elevation of the day of the hilula –
the Shabbos also has a special connection to the day of the hilula from the aspect of its content
(consequently it is understood that the elevation of the day of the hilula on Shabbos is with greater intensity and greater strength):
On the day of Shabbos all matters are elevated to the world of thought 9,
"Shabbos, and He rested" 10. And this is the content of a day of passing and hilula –
when the soul and "all his deeds and Torah and service which he served all the days of his life" 11 ascend on high.
Especially a day of hilula of a Torah scholar is called Shabbos 12. And the simple reason –
because a Torah scholar is separated from worldly matters and from weekday matters. Consequently it turns out,
that a Torah scholar
(who himself is Shabbos)
on the day of Shabbos in the entire world –
is a matter of "Shabbos within Shabbos".
All the more so when it is his day of hilula,
whose content
(of a day of hilula)
is also Shabbos.
And this is so regarding every Torah scholar
[who is called by this name because he is a student of the wisdom of the Torah,
or of a sage in the wisdom of the Torah13,
that the Torah is called by his name14]:
all the more so when it speaks about a Nasi in Israel,
who is in the aspect of Shabbat even regarding an ordinary Torah scholar –
as is understood from the law15 that "once a person is appointed a leader over the community, he is forbidden to perform labor
(a matter of the mundane)
in the presence of three",
all the more so a Nasi in Israel
(a fortiori from a leader over the community),
whose role is to lead the entire nation.
And especially a Nasi who is connected with the inner dimension of the Torah –
as is known that the root of Shabbat and weekday in the Torah
(He looked into the Torah and created the world16)
is the inner dimension of the Torah and the revealed dimension of the Torah:
The revealed dimension of the Torah speaks primarily about conduct in worldly matters
(matters of the weekday),
the clarifications of nogah17,
the aspect of the weekday of the Torah;
בחי' חול שבתורה;
in contrast, the inner dimension of the Torah speaks primarily about matters that are above worldly matters and above the world,
the aspect of Shabbat of the Torah.
Along with this, the inner dimension of the Torah draws down from above the world into the world itself,
so that the world itself should perceive G‑dliness that is above the world. Therefore, it results from this that along with Shabbat being above the world
("Shabbat vayinafash"),
it itself is drawn down into the world and time18,
so that it is a day of the week,
not only is it within the category of time,
but it is the seventh day –
in the count of time,
for the seventh comes after the sixth etc.,
and before the eighth.
And especially when it speaks about a Nasi
(in the inner dimension of the Torah itself)
of Chabad Chassidut –
as is known that Chabad Chassidut brought down the inner dimension of the Torah into understanding and comprehension in human intellect,
in a manner of yitparnason minei19,
until it becomes blood and flesh like his flesh20.
That is, it not only becomes unified with his intellect,
but from the intellect it is drawn into the heart and into the innermost being of all the soul powers,
until –
into all the powers of the body,
blood and flesh like his flesh.
And just as this is regarding the Torah of Chabad Chassidut,
so too is this regarding the influence of the Nesi'im of Chabad –
that their influence upon the people of their generation is in an internal manner until it takes them over entirely. As is known the Chabad approach21 that from "the righteous shall live by his faith"22,
do not read "yichyeh" but "yichyeh"
(with a patach),
it is drawn into "yichyeh",
it becomes the inner life-force of every Jew.
And this demonstrates that the influence is with ultimate perfection,
as is known that the perfection of influence from an influencer to a recipient,
from a teacher to a student,
is when the teacher opens up the senses of the student so that they become like the senses of the teacher23,
to such an extent that the student does not need to come to the teacher for every single detail,
because he can "stand on his own" since he has become exactly like the teacher. And if the teacher does not do this in the student,
it indicates a deficiency in the teacher.
Where is this found in the revealed dimension? The Gemara relates24 that "Rabbi Eliezer HaGadol never said a matter that he had not heard from his teacher." And seemingly:
What is the "greatness" in that he repeated the words of his teacher? On the contrary –
true greatness is seen specifically when the student innovates novel insights of his own,
and not when he merely repeats the words of his teacher,
even if he repeats them with full force. The explanation of this is:
That which "he never said a matter that he had not heard from his teacher" demonstrates that his teacher, the teacher of Rabbi Eliezer HaGadol, effected in him the perfection of influence from teacher to student –
that the influence should permeate him so much that he should become exactly like his teacher,
the existence of the teacher becomes his existence25.
And the influence of the Nesi'im of Chabad upon the people of their generation in an internal manner –
comes forth from the fact that the service and life of the Nesi'im of Chabad and the Tzaddikim of Chabad is in such a manner.
As the Alter Rebbe explains in Iggeret HaKodesh26 –
that is, that the concept emerges revealed in the Torah of Chabad
(hence it is understood that this is certainly by the Nesi’im and Tzaddikim of Chabad) –
that “the life of the tzaddik is not a physical life27 but a spiritual life, etc.” The explanation of this is28 not that regarding the tzaddik there are two separate things,
physical life and spiritual life,
and the spiritual life overcomes the physical life,
but rather:
his physical life itself becomes spiritual life,
one and the same thing,
through the fact that he transformed, through his service, that his physical life should become spiritual life,
beginning with that the inner dimension of the Torah descends into understanding and comprehension in the intellect,
and from this it is drawn into the heart,
and into all the powers of the soul,
until –
all the powers of the body,
so that it becomes “they shall be sustained from Me,”
blood and flesh like His flesh,
hence the physical life becomes –
spiritual life.
From this we have the lesson regarding the greatness of the matter of actual deed in physical life in general,
and in particular –
standing in this Shabbat after
(and which is related to)
the day of the hillula –
in the matter of the spreading forth of the wellsprings outward, which the ba’al hahillula championed:
The unique lesson of this Shabbat after the day of the hillula of the Nasi of our generation is,
that it is not sufficient to study a concept with understanding and comprehension and to accept good resolutions in thought and speech, even in the most elevated manner, etc.,
rather the main thing is –
that the matters that are above the world should descend into actual deed in physical life,
and be actualized in actual deed in this physical world. And as long as the actual deed is lacking –
the main thing is lacking.
As the Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya29 regarding the greatness of the matter of actual deed,
that one can intend all the kavanot,
and one can have all the understandings and comprehensions, etc.,
but if the actual deed is lacking –
the entire thing is lacking and one has not fulfilled the mitzvah in actual deed:
at the time that one has all these kavanot,
one can indeed thereby reach even the highest Gan Eden,
but if the actual deed is lacking –
the entire main thing is lacking!
That is,
that when he studies a concept in Torah and afterwards fulfills it in actual deed,
the explanation of this is not that the actual deed is a separate matter –
rather “the deed is the main thing,”30
and when he brings down a concept from Torah into actual deed, this does not merely add another matter,
rather this causes that the study and understanding in Torah is in a completely new and different manner.
Based on this, the unique instruction in this Shabbat that comes after the day of the hillula is understood:
Standing in this Shabbat that comes after and is connected with the day of the hillula of the Nasi of our generation,
one must surely utilize this day to do the matters in which the ba’al hahillula was particularly engrossed,
who is the Nasi of our generation,
of whom it is said “the Nasi is everything”31 and “after the head, the body goes.”32
What is the primary matter that he championed –
the matter of the spreading forth of the wellsprings outward.
Thus we have the aforementioned instruction regarding the great emphasis specifically on actual deed,
that after all the matters that are spoken of in the farbrengen,
and all the good resolutions that are accepted based on the matters in Torah concerning these matters –
“the deed is the main thing,”
one must spread the wellsprings outward in actual deed.
As the ba’al hahillula championed,
that one must engage in the spreading forth of the wellsprings outward in a simple manner,
specifically below ten handbreadths in the world of Asiyah.
And as long as this remains only in thought or in speech,
even in the study of Torah concerning this matter,
but the actual deed is lacking –
the entire matter is lacking,
for the actual deed was not done!
However, when there is the actual deed,
this does not merely add another matter to the study of Torah concerning this,
rather it imparts a permanence and validity to the understanding and comprehension concerning this in a completely new manner.
That is:
One might think
that, granted, regarding influencing another that he should put on tefillin
(for the entire Torah is compared to tefillin33),
there the deed is the main thing,
that the other should actually put on tefillin;
however, when it comes to the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
it is sufficient to speak with another about the wellsprings,
because this itself is already a matter of spreading the wellsprings.
One is told —
No! Also in the spreading of the wellsprings outward, thought, speech, and intention are secondary,
and the main thing is —
actual deed,
that the wellsprings should actually reach the outside,
and in a manner of spreading.
That is, one should see openly upon the other how the wellsprings stand within him actually, in a manner of spreading!
And the claims that one might have,
that he is compelled or the other is compelled —
he says in Tanya
(as above)
that the main thing is actual deed. It is indeed true —
the Merciful One exempts one who is compelled34,
but we do not say "as if he did it"35.
And one has the promise that "the Torah is not in heaven" but rather "the matter is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart to do it"35,
and especially since one has additionally the promise of the Baal HaHilula that now it only needs to be "stand ready, all of you"36 because everything is given ready-made,
and if one will only act in this, he will surely succeed,
only sometimes it will come easily,
and sometimes one will need greater effort, and then it will be "and you will find"37.
And in order to know whether one is doing the matter of spreading the wellsprings outward in actual deed —
there is a simple test:
Everyone must take a look at the Jews with whom he has a connection
(which proves that he was supposed to influence them),
and see whether he can show with his physical finger —
pointing with his finger and saying "this"38
[and not necessarily with his right hand,
but even with his left hand,
and on the contrary —
it is more relevant that it be with his left hand] —
here stands a Jew upon whom he influenced that he should learn Chassidus,
and one sees in him openly the wellsprings outward,
here stands a "candle to illuminate" who also influences others!
This is an answer to those who ask:
What is the touchstone to know for certain whether they have fulfilled the will of the Baal HaHilula? There is the simple test:
After he shouts that he has stormed and clamored in spreading the wellsprings outward,
and he brings proofs for this and says a thing in the name of its speaker and that he influenced this one and that one and in the outside, etc. —
one asks him the question:
Can he show with his physical finger a Jew upon whom he influenced that the wellsprings stand within him openly;
צי קען ער ווייזן מיטן אצבע הגשמי אויף א אידן אויף וועמען ער האט משפיע געווען אז אין אים שטייען די מעינות בגלוי;
pointing with his finger and saying "this is my G-d and I will glorify Him"39,
as is known the explanation of the Shelah on this40
(as the Baal HaHilula brings41),
that "v'anveihu" means I and He,
that "I and He" become one thing,
not two separate things. And in avodah —
that he and his avodah become one thing.
And this is a test that clarifies with clarity whether he has actually fulfilled the mission that the Baal HaHilula placed upon him.
And this is in addition to the very benefit therein, that through this he clarifies and knows where he stands —
which itself is a tremendous matter. And especially as it is stated at the end of Daniel42,
that at the end of the time of exile it will be "they will be clarified, whitened, and refined, many". And this is stated there even regarding the Babylonian exile under Nebuchadnezzar,
or his grandson,
or Darius the Mede
(which is also discussed in the chapters before the conclusion of Daniel);
(וואס רעדט זיך אויך אין די קאפיטלען פאר דעם סיום פון דניאל);
all the more so now,
at the time when we are after that exile,
and "all the ends have already passed"43,
it is certain that "they will be clarified, whitened, and refined, many"44.
So in addition to the very clarification of the matter,
which itself is a great thing —
one also derives from this whether one has accomplished the matter of spreading the wellsprings outward in actual deed.
And now there is no longer the excuse that the spreading of the wellsprings outward is only relevant for select individuals,
or for those who studied in "Tomchei Temimim" all their lives,
or at least for those who walk in the ways of the Baal HaHilula and the like –
because after the Baal HaHilula came to the lower hemisphere in the last ten years of his life in this world,
the spreading of the wellsprings outward became relevant to all Jews without exception.
And as is known, the letter of the Baal HaHilula45 regarding the matter of the lower hemisphere,
in the name of the Alter Rebbe,46
that the Giving of the Torah was in the upper hemisphere, not in the lower hemisphere. That is to say47:
Even though the Giving of the Torah certainly affected the entire world,
as is understood from the Midrash48 that "when the Holy One, blessed be He, gave the Torah, no bird chirped,
no fowl flew,
no ox lowed, etc.",
and simply, this was so throughout the entire world,
nevertheless, the Giving of the Torah was revealed in a specific place –
in the upper hemisphere,
not in the lower hemisphere,
and the explanation of this will be as it may.
And it is also simply understood:
The Giving of the Torah was on the day of Shabbat49 "when the morning came",50
and due to the very essence of the Giving of the Torah, it was relevant that this be specifically at this time,
nevertheless, in the lower hemisphere there was then a different time according to the nature of the world,
and since this is so according to the revealed aspect, it is certainly so according to the inner aspect of matters.
[This,
of course,
has no connection with what the Alter Rebbe writes in his Shulchan Aruch51 regarding Tikkun Chatzot,
that Chatzot is "a time of favor above at all times and in all places, and even though the days and nights vary according to climates and the distance between countries, etc., this does not matter,
and like the time for Kriat Shema and prayer and the time for the onset of Shabbat and Yom Tov, which is also in each country according to its time of days and nights",
"because the time of favor above and the supernal unifications in Kriat Shema, etc., are above the bounds of place and time, only that they shine downward to each place at its appropriate time" –
because Tikkun Chatzot must still be connected specifically with the time of Chatzot in each place according to its time,
and so forth,
unlike the Giving of the Torah, which was a one-time event at a specific time in the Sinai Desert,
when there was a different time in the rest of the world –
and the explanation of this will be as it may,
and elsewhere this is discussed].
From this is understood the magnitude of the descent of the lower hemisphere, since there the Giving of the Torah did not occur.
Nevertheless,
after the Baal HaHilula came to the lower hemisphere,
he then brought about that Torah and the spreading of the wellsprings should also reach the lower hemisphere. Thus the matter of the spreading of the wellsprings outward becomes relevant to all Jews,
and both to men and to women and girls.
And this is the practical directive, standing in this Shabbat after the day of the Hilula:
On the day of the Hilula itself, there is the directive that each and every one must do the mission that the Baal HaHilula gave to everyone –
the spreading of the wellsprings outward.
All the more so when one stands in this Shabbat after the day of the Hilula, when all the matters of the day of the Hilula ascend in a manner of completeness and delight,
"the delight of days, You called it".
And from this Shabbat, the eighth, all days are blessed52 –
one must take the directive for all the days of the week,
and furthermore –
for all the days of the year,
because since the day of the Hilula is "once a year",
it is drawn into the entire year
(as above, section 1),
and the more one does in this –
the more one adds in it,
because one who has two hundred wants
(not just another portion, but)
four hundred, etc.53
And regarding the practical:
Each and every one has the mission to spread the wellsprings outward,
so that in the outside, the wellsprings themselves should stand,
and in a manner of spreading.
And this means simply –
in actual deed,
in the language of the Baal HaHilula54 –
"Taparo da flachu",
so that one can point with a physical finger –
pointing with his finger and saying, "This" –
here is a Jew upon whom he has influenced so that in him the wellsprings stand in a revealed manner.
And it should be noted,
that the expression "Táparo da flaho" in the talks of the Baal HaHilula is specifically in the language of the country,
not in the Holy Tongue and not even in Yiddish. And even not like the expression "Totafot"55,
that although its explanation is "Tet in the shoulders two, Pat in Africa two"56,
it is nevertheless a word that is written in the Torah,
to the extent that there are great commentators who say57,
that in truth it is
[namely "Totafot",
and regarding this "Tet" and "Pat"]
a word in the Holy Tongue,
only that a certain country merited that this word should also become a part of the language of that country;
נאר די געוויסע מדינה האט זוכה געווען אז דער ווארט זאל אויך ווערן א חלק פון לשון מדינה ההיא;
in contrast, "Táparo dia flaho" is not a word from the Holy Tongue or Yiddish, but rather from the seventy languages literally.
This proves that the actual deed must be below ten handbreadths, to such an extent that it comes down into the language of the nations,
so that even they understand it.
And as mentioned,
the test of this is,
whether one can point with a physical finger at a Jew in whom the wellsprings are revealed,
that in addition to the essential clarification of where he stands in the world,
one also has from this the aspect regarding the fulfillment of the mission in actual deed,
because one sees with physical eyes that here stands a Jew upon whom one has influenced that he should have a connection to the wellsprings revealed.
Thus it becomes "Your world you shall see in your lifetime"58,
which was said not only for unique individuals59,
but in general it applies to all Jews,
that even before the coming of Moshiach it is "Your world you shall see in your lifetime",
first and foremost –
through that which "the reward of a mitzvah is a mitzvah"60,
the greatest reward is the very thing of having fulfilled the mitzvah,
and one sees it with physical eyes
("Your world you shall see in your lifetime"),
because one can point with a physical finger at the service that he has accomplished.
And together with this, Jews also ask that the true and complete redemption should already come,
and they ask this openly and in speech,
even though the Omnipresent knows the thoughts of Jews –
because,
as above,
the main thing is how it comes down into actual deed openly in this world.
As we see it in the general matter of prayer,
that although "What is service of the heart? That is prayer"61,
nevertheless "one should not pray in his heart alone, but rather articulate the words with his lips and make them audible to his ears"62,
prayer must specifically be in speech with the mouth
(and therefore it is counted in the number of the commandments63),
even though the Omnipresent knows what transpires in his heart,
and certainly the letters of thought,
nevertheless he must pray in speech.
So too regarding the prayer and request "Until when",
"Delay the exile" –
it is not sufficient that he think about it in thought,
rather it must come out in speech and with a great voice.
And even though,
"Whoever makes his voice heard in his prayer is among those of little faith"64,
this applies when there could be a concern that thereby he causes one to think "as if the Holy One, blessed be He, does not hear a silent prayer" –
but here we are speaking about a "great voice" that comes as a result of "a voice within"65,
with all the force and storm that comes from all the powers of his soul,
then certainly this cry with a great voice is a good thing.
And through that which Jews will request the redemption in the aforementioned manner,
and will do their service in actual deed –
even if only a majority of Jews do their service,
moreover –
even one person alone can tip himself and the entire world to the scale of merit and bring about for himself and for them salvation and deliverance66.
May it be His will that it should be so in actual deed –
the true and complete redemption through Moshiach our righteousness,
"with our youths and with our elders etc. with our sons and with our daughters"67,
the completeness of the people,
and we go in the completeness of the land,
"a land which etc. the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"68,
in a manner of "for Hashem your God will enlarge your border"69,
together with the completeness of the Torah and His commandments.
And this
(the completeness of the Torah)
is also connected to the upcoming weekly portion
(Parshat Yitro),
which we begin reading in the Mincha prayer of this Shabbat –
the portion of the Giving of the Torah:
Even though the Giving of the Torah will not be again
(as ruled by our Nesi'im70) –
it is known the Torah of the Alter Rebbe
(as transmitted by the Baal HaHilula71)
that one must live –
not only in spiritual life but also in physical life –
with the time,
with the weekly parshah,
and in our case –
with the parshah of the Giving of the Torah,
and simply –
that when one sits to learn Torah it is exactly like at the Giving of the Torah72,
for whoever reads and reviews Torah, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him73,
and therefore72 "just as there with awe and fear and trembling and perspiration, so too here with awe and fear and trembling and perspiration"74,
And in our actual times.
As mentioned above,
that in addition to it being the day of Shabbos,
there is a second matter in this day –
that it is the fifteenth of the month,
when the moon stands in its fullness.
And the explanation:
Shabbos is one of the seven days of creation75,
which are dependent on the course of the sun
(and there was evening and there was morning),
and Shabbos is the perfection thereof,
as is known that regarding Shabbos Bereishis it is not said "and there was evening",
because "for thirty-six hours that light served"76. And just as it was on Shabbos Bereishis,
so it repeats itself on every Shabbos
(as explained in Likkutei Torah77 in explanation of the reason why on every Sunday one says in the Song of the Day "Today is day one" etc.,
because on every Sunday the order of times begins anew as on Sunday at the beginning of creation,
and certainly so regarding Shabbos).
But the month is dependent on the light of the moon,
and the fifteenth thereof –
when the moon stands in its fullness –
is the perfection of the moon.
It follows that Shabbos is the perfection of the sun,
and the fifteenth of the month is the perfection of the moon.
Now sun and moon are two matters opposite one another –
as understood from that "Israel counts by the moon and the nations of the world by the sun"78,
and regarding Israel and the nations of the world it is stated "one nation shall prevail over the other,
when this rises the other falls"79,
and likewise regarding moon and sun,
that when the moon is in its fullness the power of the sun of the side of impurity is weakened80,
and vice versa.
So too in holiness itself, sun and moon indicate two distinct services opposite one another
(as discussed in a previous farbrengen81):
Shabbos refers to the perfection of service in the manner of "the regular offerings in their order"82,
like the light of the sun which shines without changes,
"they do not cease"83. The fifteenth of the month
(the perfection of the moon)
refers to the perfection of service in the manner of "the additional offerings according to their law"82,
increasing and going
(constant changes and innovations in his service),
like the light of the moon which constantly changes in a manner of increasing and going.
And in this itself there are two manners:
In the first half of the month,
when the light of the moon is growing from day to day –
it indicates the service in the manner of increasing and going in light,
until its perfection on the fifteenth of the month,
the moon stands in its fullness;
קיימא סיהרא באשלמותא;
And in the second half of the month,
when the light of the moon is diminishing from day to day,
one must nevertheless say that then too there is a matter of "ascending in holiness"84,
and "He declares His words to Yaakov, His statutes and judgments to Yisrael" –
"what He does He tells Yisrael to do"85 –
the matter in this is:
Regarding shining upon the earth,
in earthly matters,
the moon
(in the second half of the month)
is diminishing,
but then it is increasing
(ascending in holiness)
from day to day in the service of self-nullification,
until the perfection of the service of self-nullification before the new moon,
when the light of the moon becomes nullified completely
(until even a point does not remain),
which is a necessary condition and preparation for the new moon on Rosh Chodesh
("and you shall be remembered when your dwelling is remembered"86),
a new birth in his service,
to be elevated even higher in his service;
נתעלה ווערן נאך העכער בעבודתו;
But to jump directly from a state of the moon standing in its fullness
(the perfection of service in the moon's shining upon the earth)
to complete nullification
(in order that there can be a birth and a new level in his service) –
one cannot,
therefore the service of self-nullification must be from the light to the heavy,
each day
(after the fifteenth of the month)
he increases in the service of self-nullification,
and in service –
this is through his feeling that even though he stands in perfection
(the moon stands in its fullness),
this is nevertheless incomparable relative to where he could have been,
therefore he stands in a movement of self-nullification,
And each day he adds and progresses in this,
until he reaches the completeness of nullification on the eve of Rosh Chodesh,
when the moon becomes nullified completely and entirely,
more than "and my soul shall be as dust to all,"
for "and my soul shall be as dust" is still some existence of "my soul" which stands "as dust"
(because dust is also an existence),
and "as dust to all,"
and "shall be,"
in its being it shall be,
but on the eve of Rosh Chodesh before the birth of the moon, the moon becomes entirely nullified until nothing remains of it
(not even a point).
And specifically this becomes the preparation for a new month,
a completely new birth in his service,
as it is said "and you shall be remembered when your dwelling is remembered,"
until he reaches the completeness in this –
"until David grew great,"
as explained in the discourses of Chassidus.
It follows that the service of Shabbos and the service of the fifteenth of the month are two separate,
opposite services:
Shabbos is the completeness of service in the manner of "the perpetual offerings in their order,"
in the likeness of the sun;
בדוגמת השמש;
and the fifteenth of the month is the completeness of service in the manner of "the additional offerings according to their law,"
in the likeness of the moon.
And in a more general way:
Shabbos is the completeness of the service of the influencer
(sun),
and the fifteenth of the month is the completeness of the service of the recipient
(moon,
which receives light from the sun).
For an influencer and a recipient,
a teacher and a student,
are two opposite services. Even though one must indeed have both together in order for there to be the matter of influence,
in the likeness of the mitzvah of charity –
where one must have the rich person and the poor person in order for there to be the fulfillment of the mitzvah –
nevertheless they are two separate services:
this one is an influencer and that one is a recipient.
In the future to come, however, these two levels will be truly equal,
as it is said "and the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold as the light of the seven days,"
for then will be the rectification of the diminution of the moon,
consequently the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun.
And in the service of man –
that both services of "the perpetual offerings in their order" and "the additional offerings according to their law"
(corresponding to sun and moon)
will be together and equal.
And an aspect of this also exists in the present time –
in a fixed occurrence like this day,
when Shabbos and the fifteenth of the month come together in one day,
so that every single moment of this day is both Shabbos and the fifteenth of the month,
which gives the ability to perform both services together –
the connection of both services:
Shabbos –
the completeness of the sun,
"the perpetual offerings in their order" and the fifteenth of the month –
the completeness of the moon,
"the additional offerings according to their law."
It follows that in this particular fixed occurrence
(Shabbos the fifteenth of the month)
is reflected the general matter
(as it will be in the future to come)
of the connection of both services together
[as discussed many times,
that in every particular of Shabbos and the festivals is reflected the general aspect of Shabbos and the festivals.
Therefore one who is engaged in a mitzvah is exempt from the mitzvah because every mitzvah includes all the mitzvos].
And in the same way as was discussed regarding Shabbos Rosh Chodesh,
that every moment of that day is both Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh,
which indicates the connection of both services of "the perpetual offerings in their order"
(Shabbos)
and "the additional offerings according to their law"
(Rosh Chodesh).
But there is in this what is not in that,
there is an advantage in this matter in Shabbos Rosh Chodesh and an advantage in Shabbos the fifteenth of the month. And standing now in the fifteenth of the month,
which then is the "gate" through which all the other matters ascend,
one must speak about the advantage of the fifteenth of the month:
On Rosh Chodesh the completeness of the light of the moon stands only in potential and in concealment,
indeed in potential as it is in a beginning
(where it is in completeness),
but it is still in potential and in concealment;
אבער ס'איז פארט בכח ובהעלם;
but on the fifteenth of the month the moon stands in its completeness in actuality and in revelation,
so that all inhabitants of the world can see it,
also the nations of the world. However the inner action of the moon is primarily in the Jewish people,
"who are destined to be renewed like it,"
but the influence of the moon at the time when the moon stands in its completeness is revealed also to the nations of the world].
What was discussed above
(regarding the matter of Shabbos,
that it is a drawing down from above the world into the world,
like the matter of the yahrtzeit,
and particularly of a Nasi of Chabad,
as explained above at length)
has a connection also with the weekly portion
(Parshas Beshalach),
and also with the portion of the coming week
(Parshas Yisro)
which is blessed from this Shabbos,
and one begins to read it in the Minchah prayer of this Shabbos:
In our parshah there is the portion of the manna
(the Chumash lesson of the sixth day,
Erev Shabbat).
In the coming weekly parshah
(Parshas Yitro)
there is the portion of the giving of the Torah.
And both matters –
manna and Torah –
are connected with the content of the matter of Shabbat –
a drawing down from above the world into the world,
as follows.
It is explained in many places that the manna comes from the most supernal place,
"bread from the heavens",
and together with this it is a physical food that became blood and flesh like the flesh of those who ate the manna. And –
in its descent below into the physicality of the world, the manna remained in its essence as it was above
("bread from the heavens"),
even while being below "clothed in it are the actual supernal lights",
and therefore even when coming below "there was no waste in it".
That is, that the manna was not only "bread from the heavens" above,
but also as it came down below it remained "bread from the heavens" and therefore "there was no waste in it".
And therefore the manna effected a refinement in those who ate the manna,
so that their physical lives should become spiritual lives
("bread from the heavens").
And based on this the connection of the manna with Shabbat is understood
(and with the day of the hillula of the Tenth of Shevat):
Shabbat and the manna are connected with the same level and effect in general the same matter –
the connection of the upper and lower in a manner that the upper remains in its level and the lower remains in its existence:
On Shabbat there is the elevation of the worlds
(in their actual existence)
upward,
and the manna is the drawing down of the upper
(in its essence)
downward.
And this is the reason,
as explained in Chassidic discourses
(in the discourses of the Alter Rebbe and our Nesiim after him),
for that which although the manna did not descend
(below)
on Shabbat, it states in the Zohar that the main drawing down of the manna above is specifically on Shabbat,
and all six days are blessed with manna from the seventh day,
because the manna and Shabbat generally come from the same level –
the aspect of the innerness of the upper,
and therefore specifically on Shabbat,
when the worlds are elevated to this level,
the manna is drawn down above,
but since on Shabbat there is the elevation of the worlds in the aspect of the innerness of the upper,
the manna cannot then be drawn down below,
and this is drawn down in actuality in the six weekdays following Shabbat *105.
And this is also the connection with the day of the hillula,
whose content is also an ascent above the world,
and together with this it is drawn down in the innerness of each one,
in a manner of "they will be sustained from Me",
in physical life,
as explained above at length.
And based on this one will understand why the portion of the manna is an introduction to the portion of the giving of the Torah
(in Parshas Yitro):
Our Sages say "The Torah was only given to be expounded upon to those who eat the manna".
That is, in order that the Jews should be able to receive the Torah at the giving of the Torah
(in Parshas Yitro),
they needed to have the preparation and the refinement through eating the manna. And the reason for this –
because eating the manna effects something similar to the matter that was effected at the giving of the Torah:
the connection of the upper and lower in a manner that the upper remains in its essence and the lower in its existence,
as is known that the effect of the giving of the Torah
(regarding the Torah that existed before the giving of the Torah,
as our Sages said the Torah preceded the world by two thousand years)
was,
that the Torah which comes from the heavens
(like "bread from the heavens"),
"from the heavens He made you hear His voice",
was drawn down below in this physical world in order to effect a refinement in the physicality of the world,
and there was the nullification of the decree that the upper ones should not descend to the lower ones and the lower ones should not ascend to the upper ones.
And therefore the Jews needed for this the preparation of eating the manna,
which effected in them the connection of the upper and the lower,
the refinement of the body through that which becoming blood and flesh like their flesh it remains "bread from the heavens",
and "there was no waste in it",
something similar to and a preparation for the connection of the upper ones and lower ones at the giving of the Torah.
And from that same reason itself, just as the manna is connected with Shabbat, so too is the giving of the Torah connected with Shabbat,
as our Sages said "According to everyone, the Torah was given on Shabbat",
because in general they are all
(Shabbat,
manna and Torah)
connected with the same level.
And correspondingly, the order in the parshiyos of the Torah is also arranged,
that first comes the portion of the manna
(in Parshas Beshalach),
afterwards comes the portion of the giving of the Torah –
because the matter of the manna is a preparation for the giving of the Torah.
And one must add in this,
then on this Shabbat
(Shabbat of Parshat Beshalach)
they actually have the concept of the manna
(as it is above) –
because the drawing down of the manna
(above)
is specifically on Shabbat
(as mentioned above),
and therefore it also comes out in the Torah reading of this Shabbat,
that one reads the portion of the manna:
but the concept of the giving of the Torah –
whose main accomplishment is the drawing down of the Torah below to earth –
is on this Shabbat only above,
and the concept of the giving of the Torah actually below is only on the Shabbat after this,
after the preparation of "And Yitro heard etc.",
as explained in the Zohar that the giving of the Torah came specifically after the acknowledgment of Yitro,
which is the concept of the advantage of light from darkness and the advantage of wisdom from foolishness.
Since the Torah is eternal,
it is understood that the concept of the manna and the giving of the Torah
(and the concept of "The Torah was not given etc. except to those who eat the manna")
also exists now in the service of man. As it is understood from this that according to some opinions one must recite the portion of the manna every day,
and even according to those who do not recite it verbally with the mouth,
one thinks about it in thought.
One of the lessons from this:
The general content of the service of man is –
to draw down Divinity into this lowest world, below which there is no lower, exactly as it is above;
צו ממשיך זיין אלקות בעוה"ז התחתון שאין תחתון למטה ממנו פונקט ווי דאס איז למעלה;
to draw down spiritual life into physical life,
so that the physical life should be one thing with the spiritual life
(similar to the drawing down of the manna and the giving of the Torah,
that it is drawn down below in blood and flesh like his flesh, exactly as it is above).
And the lesson is specifically –
regarding the unique service of the master of the hillula
(since we are now in the Shabbat that comes after and has a connection to the day of the hillula) –
the service of spreading the wellsprings outward:
Into the actual outside one must actually bring the wellsprings themselves
(just as the wellsprings stand in their place),
and in a manner of spreading.
And in this itself it means
(as discussed earlier at length),
that good resolutions in thought and speech are not enough,
but from this it must come down into actual deed,
that the wellsprings themselves should actually stand in a manner of spreading into the outside.
And although we are now on the day of Shabbat,
when one cannot fulfill
(in completeness)
the concept of spreading the wellsprings outward in actuality,
because on Shabbat it is "Let no man go out from his place"
(similar to the manna that did not descend below on Shabbat),
all the more so that the actual spreading of the wellsprings does not mean merely that one goes out "from his place" but one goes into the outside –
nevertheless, one has the lesson from this from the drawing down of the manna:
Just as the main drawing down of the manna above is specifically on Shabbat and all six days are blessed with manna from the seventh day
(when the manna actually descends below),
so too "one attends to the needs of the community on Shabbat",
that is, that although in general on Shabbat one prepares for the weekday,
but regarding the needs of the community even in mundane matters
(which ostensibly one would not be permitted to prepare for on Shabbat,
because if it concerns matters permitted on Shabbat, what is the novelty that one attends to this on Shabbat)
is "one attends to the needs of the community on Shabbat",
and from this "attending" on Shabbat it is then drawn down below in actual deed on the weekdays after this. And "needs of the community" includes also the concept of spreading the wellsprings outward,
as the simple understanding of the matter. And especially according to what is stated in the books,
that "community" is an acronym for righteous, intermediate, and wicked,
and specifically through all these types together
(the righteous and the intermediate,
corresponding to the righteous and the intermediate),
together with the vav that adds and draws down and connects with the resh
(the wicked),
the word and reality of "community" is formed.
What in service is the concept of –
"May the Lord add to me another son",
that one adds
(the vav that adds between the righteous and intermediate and the resh)
the concept that from an "other" one makes a "son",
the transformation of the resh corresponding to the wicked into a "son".
And to add,
that the addition
(the vav that adds)
of the resh
(the wicked),
the transformation of "other" into "son" –
is through the letter vav,
which is the letter of truth,
the middle line,
which is drawn down below exactly as it is above without changes,
like the form of the letter vav,
that from it
(the yud of)
the head of the vav a line is drawn down below exactly as it is above.
And it is explained that through the service of the Vav
(the drawing down of the higher to the lower exactly as it is above)
one opens the matter of the redemption which is connected with the letter Vav,
for then will be the perfection of the drawing down of the letter Vav,
as the words of our Sages: "In five places it is written
(Jacob)
full, and Elijah is missing in five places,
Jacob took a letter from the name of Elijah as a pledge that he will come and announce the redemption of his children."
And in this consists the entirety of the service of man,
to draw down from the head of the Vav downward exactly as it is above,
in the manner of the drawing down of the manna that when it is drawn down below into blood and flesh like his flesh, it remains in its essence as it is above
(which above is drawn down on Shabbat).
And so too is the lesson regarding Shabbat,
that "we attend to the needs of the community on Shabbat,"
and from Shabbat
(as the matters are above,
in thought etc.)
it is then drawn down below into actual deed on the weekdays with the same force as it stands on Shabbat.
And simply:
The main darkness of the exile is not at the time when one is at the farbrengen,
or when one sits with a book and learns Torah and the like –
for then
(at the time of the deed)
one indeed stands with enthusiasm and arousal,
The main darkness of the exile consists in this, that from this there is no lasting effect:
after one goes away from the farbrengen
(or from a book in which one learns)
and the like,
and afterwards there is an interval of several days or several weeks until the next farbrengen –
one forgets about the standing and state in which one stood and the good resolutions that one accepted during the farbrengen,
until another farbrengen comes and then he remembers again about it and he stands again in arousal.
As one sees in practice,
that after the farbrengen one looks at him and one sees that he sits and "counts flies!"...
Why does he count flies? Because they disturb him and he thinks that by counting them they will stop disturbing him...
He does not understand that the entire disturbance begins through his counting the flies instead of using the time to say a chapter of Tehillim,
learn a matter in Torah and the like,
for then he would have been entirely rid of the flies!...
And in this consists the main darkness of the exile:
During the farbrengen he stands in arousal and with a storm and accepts good resolutions with force and with truth,
and he knows that the standing and state is the main thing;
און ער ווייסט אז דער מעמד ומצב איז דער עיקר;
but after he goes away from the farbrengen and goes out into the world and to his position in order to earn a livelihood,
he thinks that since the world gives him a livelihood, the world is the main thing,
and the world tells him how he must conduct himself:
whether he should go to the farbrengen at all,
whether he should learn Torah and when he should learn and the like...
And when one shows him that in the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch it is written opposite to how it appears in the world –
he argues that he finds himself in the world,
"when you go to a city, follow its customs,"
he must conduct himself as it appears in the world!...
And regarding this is the main concealment and hiding –
that into physical life should be drawn spiritual life;
אז אין חיים בשריים זאלן נמשך ווערן חיים רוחניים;
he thinks that they are two separate things,
and his spiritual life he had in the past and will have them in the future,
but now
(in the present),
he thinks that the world and physical life is the main thing,
and the world tells him how he must conduct himself,
that first and foremost he must think about his livelihood etc.,
and regarding matters of Torah and commandments he can put them off to another time. Until another farbrengen comes and the like.
Regarding this there is the aforementioned instruction
(from the drawing down of the manna etc.) –
that in the world,
in physical life,
one must draw down spiritual life,
and this should stand in the world in physical life with the same force exactly as it is above.
That is, that from the farbrengen
(or from the learning of Torah and the like)
there must be a lasting effect,
so that also after the farbrengen one should always remember and stand with the same storm and arousal exactly as during the farbrengen.
And then one does not delude oneself that one can postpone the service to another time,
and one can fulfill with good resolutions,
because in every single moment one feels the storm that one had during the farbrengen or when one was in the study hall and synagogue and the like,
consequently it brings down the good resolutions into actual deed immediately and at once.
And as the Baal HaHilula writes in the maamar of the Hilula
[which certainly he studied the maamar in this year,
just as he studied it in the year of the histalkus and several times in between],
that one of the explanations in "Tzava" is –
"a limited time",
"for every person has a fixed time".
That is, that regarding every single matter in service a person has a "limited time" when he must accomplish it,
and he cannot postpone it for later.
And especially when one finds oneself in the time of Ikvasa d'Meshicha –
it is known the parable of the Baal HaHilula that the service in the time of Ikvasa d'Meshicha is comparable to walking on a steep mountain
(not just a sloping mountain,
but a steep mountain),
where then one either goes up or one slips down,
and one has no time to rest and to postpone the walking,
because then one will slip down.
When one walks on level ground –
one can walk at ease,
and afterwards stop,
and sit down and rest,
or lie down to sleep,
and contemplate at ease,
and afterwards catch oneself that he needs to ascend relative to his state on the previous day.
For while he rests he indeed does not go further and he does not reach his destination,
but he also does not descend from his level.
However, when one finds oneself on a steep mountain,
one cannot rest even for a moment and lie down to sleep,
because then he will slip down, Heaven forbid!...
But what then –
since he sleeps, he does not feel the pain of the fact that he is slipping down,
because he does not know at all that he is slipping!
On the other hand, however, there is an advantage in walking on a steep mountain –
and because of this the Baal HaHilula indeed told it,
for one cannot say that he told it in order to cause pain to Jews, Heaven forbid –
that when one walks on level ground it takes a long time until one reaches the top,
however, when one walks on a steep mountain,
when one decides to climb higher on the mountain,
one can in a short time reach very high,
up to the peak of the mountain!
This is the lesson of the portion of the manna in the service of man now.
And this becomes a preparation for the matter of the giving of the Torah –

It is also customary to study a verse from the weekly portion together with the commentary of Rashi,
a topic in the notes of the Tatte on the Zohar,
and a topic in the daily lesson in the Rambam.
In the portion of the manna in our parshah
(chapter 16, verse 16 and onward)
it is stated:
"This is the thing which Hashem commanded: gather from it each man according to his eating, an omer per head, according to the number of your souls, each man for those in his tent shall you take,
and the children of Israel did so and they gathered, the one who gathered much and the one who gathered little,
and they measured with an omer, and the one who gathered much did not have more and the one who gathered little did not lack, each man according to his eating they gathered".
And Rashi explains:
"There were those who gathered much and those who gathered little,
and when they came to their homes and measured with an omer each person what he had gathered, they found that the one who increased to gather did not have more than an omer per head in his tent, and the one who diminished to gather did not find less than an omer per head,
and this is a great miracle that was performed with it."
(Because in the verse it is written "an omer per head, etc., each person according to those in his tent you shall take,"
it is understood that the omer per head is connected to "each person according to those in his tent,"
therefore Rashi explains that even though "there were those who gathered much and those who gathered little,"
but "when they came to their homes etc. they found" that in each one there was an omer per head].
One must understand:
In this verse "they gathered from it each person according to his eating,
an omer per head" there is simply a contradiction from within and from without:
On one side it says "they gathered from it each person according to his eating,"
that is, that each person "gathered" according to how much he needed for his eating,
in which there are differences between one person and another,
together with this it says a specific measure "an omer per head"?!
So that this should not be a contradiction,
one would simply learn,
that what is written here "an omer per head" is not a requirement,
rather the Torah says so because the Torah speaks of the majority,
and in the manner that Rashi explains in several places "the text speaks of the common occurrence,"
and for the majority an "omer" is the measure of eating for one person during the day. Therefore this is not a contradiction to "each person according to his eating,"
because it is indeed the simple meaning that each person must gather "according to his eating,"
and "an omer per head" is only the measure of eating in most people.
But according to Rashi's explanation one cannot answer in this way,
because Rashi explains that "an omer per head" means exactly,
that each one actually received specifically an "omer per head" not less and not more
(and this is not a measure from the aspect of the Torah speaking of the majority).
According to this it turns out,
that this contradicts what is written before this "they gathered from it each person according to his eating,"
that is, each person according to how much he needed for his eating,
in which there are differences between one person and another –
precisely the opposite of Rashi's explanation that each one actually received an "omer per head" exactly?!
The question arises:
What compels Rashi to explain that "an omer per head" means specifically this measure not less and not more,
according to which there becomes a contradiction in the verse to "each person according to his eating" –
when one could have learned simply,
that "an omer per head" does not mean this measure specifically,
rather the Torah speaks of the majority?!
And especially that according to his explanation Rashi must come to this that a "great miracle" occurred here
(that even though "there were those who gathered much and those who gathered little" but "when they came to their homes and measured with an omer each person what he had gathered, they found that the one who increased to gather did not have more than an omer per head etc. and the one who diminished to gather did not find less than an omer per head") –
what compels Rashi to learn that a "great miracle" occurred here that in each one there was actually an "omer per head,"
when one could have learned simply that "an omer per head" is not exact
(rather the Torah speaks of the majority)
and one does not need to come to that a miracle was here?!
One cannot answer,
that according to Rashi's explanation "each person according to his eating" itself is an "omer per head" –
because this is a great miracle beyond the great miracle that is stated in Rashi,
for in "each person according to his eating" there are naturally differences from one extreme to the other:
A child of five years for Scripture understands that a one-day-old infant,
and even a child of five years,
needs incomparably less food than a man of thirty for strength and the like,
both from the aspect that he is older and larger and from the aspect that he needs to have strength to work harder
("you shall sow your field" and "you shall prune your vineyard")
than a child of five years for Scripture. Consequently it is a very great wonder and miracle to say that "according to his eating" of every person
(a one-day-old infant until a man of thirty for strength)
is an "omer per head" equally in all of them,
for naturally a man of thirty needs to eat incomparably more than an infant.
However, the great miracle that Rashi explains
(that even though "some gathered much and some gathered little," but "when they came to their homes and measured with an omer, each person what he gathered, they found that the one who gathered much did not have more than an omer per head, etc.")
is not such a great miracle
(in comparison to the aforementioned miracle),
because even a strong person who "gathers much" in his gathering,
this is still in proportion to how much an ordinary person can lift,
not like the difference between the measure of eating of an adult relative to the measure of eating of an infant.
The question on Rashi becomes even stronger:
The phrase "each man according to his eating" appears not only once
(in the command of Hashem),
but it appears again a second time
(in verse 18)
when it speaks about the actual gathering:
"each man according to his eating they gathered."
Now, regarding "each man according to his eating" the first time
(in the command of Hashem),
one could answer with difficulty that the gathering would be "according to his eating,"
but in practice they would have "an omer per head,"
exactly an omer
(and the Almighty said it to the Jews in order to calm them, so that they would not become anxious when they saw that they had "an omer per head").
But after it says a second time "each man according to his eating,"
which speaks after "and they measured with an omer, etc., they did not have less" –
one must say that the Jews actually had "each man according to his eating"
(and not "an omer per head"),
so how does it accord with "an omer per head"
(according to Rashi that "an omer per head" is exact)?
The question becomes even stronger:
A child of five studying Scripture remembers that earlier
(in Chumash Shemot, Parshat Bo, before our portion)
the phrase "each man according to his eating" also appears regarding the command of the Paschal offering:
After the Almighty says "on the tenth of this month, they shall take for themselves each man a lamb for a father's house, a lamb for a house," it says:
"And if the house is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor who is near to his house shall take, etc., each man according to his eating you shall count for the lamb."
One sees from this that even though there was a command of Hashem "a lamb for a house," this is not a contradiction to "each man according to his eating,"
because "a lamb for a house" is not exact that every house must eat one lamb,
rather the Torah speaks of the majority,
and in the majority of cases it is "a lamb for a house,"
but "if the house is too small for a lamb," then "he and his neighbor who is near to his house shall take, etc., each man according to his eating."
Based on this, it is appropriate to say that also in the portion of the manna,
where the same phrase "each man according to his eating" appears,
the same interpretation applies,
that "an omer per head" is not exact,
rather the Torah speaks of the majority.
The question arises on Rashi –
why does he interpret here differently than regarding the Paschal offering, that "an omer per head" is exact,
even though there it contradicts "each man according to his eating"?
One must say that according to the simple meaning, it is necessary to learn that "an omer per head" means exactly an "omer," no less and no more –
because there is a rule in Rashi that "I have come only for the simple meaning of Scripture,"
and he does not even bring it from Aggadah or "our Rabbis expounded,"
that is, an "Aggadah that settles the words of Scripture,"
rather he brings it simply,
that is, that this is the simple meaning of Scripture.
And as will be explained below.
In my father's notes on the Zohar in our portion, he brings two ways in giving charity:
One way –
that one gives charity to the poor person after he comes to ask for it,
a second,
higher way –
that one gives charity to the poor person before he comes to ask.
These two ways in charity exist in Halachah,
according to the ruling of the Rambam that one level in charity is "that he gives him with his hand before he asks,"
and "lower than this is that he gives him after he asks." And simply, the difference is:
When one gives the poor person before he asks,
this is with a more pleasant countenance,
because there is less shame for the poor person when he does not need to ask.
However, one must also have a lesson from this in the service of man,
and as will be explained below.
The matter
(in the notes on the Zohar)
is also connected to the lessons in the Rambam of these days –
in the Laws of Lender and Borrower:
At the beginning of the laws of lender and borrower, the Rambam writes:
"It is a positive commandment to lend to the poor of Israel, as it is said, 'If you lend money to My people, to the poor with you,'"
and he adds that "this commandment is greater than charity to the poor person who asks,
for this one has already become needy to ask, and that one has not yet reached this level." And this is in the manner of the aforementioned superiority in giving charity before the poor person asks, relative to giving charity after the poor person asks.
In this law in the Rambam, the question is known,
as was once asked
(and it has already been printed)
and was not concluded at that time:
The commandment of acts of kindness is both for a poor person and for a rich person who is temporarily [in need],
for at that hour he is poor –
so why does the Rambam write that "it is a positive commandment to lend to the poor of Israel" and does not mention the rich at all?
And one cannot answer based on the general principle of the Rambam that he does not write novellae,
because the commandment regarding the rich is explicitly stated in the words of our Sages.
And see the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe

"Give to a wise man, and he will become wiser."
It is also customary to pause on a matter in the daily Rambam lesson:
In today's lesson
(in the laws of lender and borrower)
the Rambam rules like Reish Lakish,
that "it is a presumption that a person does not repay within his term."
And one should note several observations on this:
A) In this matter, there is a general question
(both in the Rambam and in the Gemara):
The source of this ruling of the Rambam like Reish Lakish is in the Gemara:
The Gemara brings a dispute on this:
Reish Lakish holds that "one who sets a time for his fellow
(in a loan that he lent him)
and said to him, 'I repaid you within my term,'
is not believed,"
because "would that he would repay within his term." Abaye and Rava hold that he is believed,
because "a person sometimes repays within his term; sometimes money comes to him, he says, 'I will go and repay, so that I will not be troubled,'"
and additionally he is afraid to hold onto the money lest he need to use it for another matter,
therefore he repays it immediately. And the Gemara rules that "the law is like Reish Lakish."
One must have a rationale for how this aligns with the principle that "the law is like the later authorities,"
for Abaye and Rava are later authorities relative to Reish Lakish,
and therefore regarding Rava and Reish Lakish, the law is like Rava because he is the later authority.
B) In the early authorities, the reason for this presumption is stated
(that a person does not repay within his term),
because the borrower initially set the time for repayment because he estimated that he would not have the money to repay until that time,
and through this he revealed his mind that he would not be able to repay within the term.
Accordingly, a question and inquiry arises regarding the last day on which the debt is completed,
whether the borrower is believed when he says that he repaid the debt on that day:
On one hand, one can say that he is believed,
because it is the way of people to repay on the day the debt is completed immediately when they have the money,
and the principle that a person does not repay within his term
(because he estimated that until that time he would not be able to repay)
applies only until the day the debt is completed,
but when that day arrives, he repays immediately. On the other hand, however, one can say that he is not believed until the end of the day,
because until the end of the day it is considered within the term,
for the same reason that by setting the day, the borrower revealed his mind that for him it is difficult to repay until the end of the day.
c) The entire dispute between Rashi and Abaye and Rava
(whether a person may repay within his time or not)
is only regarding a lender and borrower,
where immediately at the time of the loan the borrower is already obligated to the lender and his properties are mortgaged to him
(a monetary lien or movable property and the like),
therefore it is possible that Abaye and Rava hold that a person may repay within the time when the money happens to come to him;
דערפאר איז שייך אז אביי ורבא זאלן האלטן אז אדם פורע תוך הזמן כשנזדמנו לו המעות;
However, in a case where the obligation itself has not yet come, there is no dispute,
and Abaye and Rava also hold that a person does not repay before he becomes obligated,
if he will not come to obligation at all.
Therefore the law is that one who rents a house to another and demands the rent of the house, and the borrower claims that he paid within the time –
he is not believed according to everyone
(also according to Abaye and Rava),
because he has not yet become obligated
(and his property has not yet become mortgaged)
to the lessor,
for we are concerned lest the house collapse or lest the house of the lessor collapse and he will evict him from this house,
consequently he will not need to pay him any rent,
because he did not live there the time that was agreed upon,
and "rent is only paid at the end."
And so too is the law regarding the redemption of the firstborn,
that according to everyone we say that a person does not repay before the obligation
(and we do not say that if he will have the money he will repay before the time "so that he not be troubled"),
because the obligation does not take effect until thirty days, lest the son die and he will not come to obligation.
Based on the above, a question arises in the inner dimension of the matters:
It was once said that also the Most High fulfills the commandment of redemption of the firstborn
(for "He declares His word to Jacob, His statutes and judgments to Israel" –
"what He does, He tells Israel to do") –
our Father in Heaven redeems "My firstborn son Israel" from exile.
And based on the above that according to everyone
(also according to Abaye and Rava)
a person does not repay within his time regarding the redemption of the firstborn –
it seemingly follows that the Most High will not redeem the Jews within the time,
and seemingly this is contrary to reality, for the Gemara explicitly says that "if they merit –
I will hasten it,"
before the time?!
The explanation of this is:
The reason why the obligation of the redemption of the firstborn is specifically after thirty days and not immediately upon the birth of the child is –
because "any [child] that survives thirty days in a human is not a stillborn,"
i.e., before thirty days he is a doubtful stillborn,
however, on the thirtieth day the child leaves the category of stillborn and he is presumed to be viable,
consequently the obligation takes effect. And therefore everyone holds that regarding the redemption of the firstborn, a person does not repay before thirty days.
However, regarding the Most High, it is not possible to say that within the thirty days there is a doubt of stillborn,
for the Most High certainly knows that "My firstborn son Israel" is viable and that they must certainly be redeemed from exile,
and especially since together with the Jews the Divine Presence is in exile,
and the Most High is already, as it were, obligated –
there is no reason to postpone the redemption and payment until thirty days,
rather certainly the Most High does it immediately and at once,
"not delaying even the blink of an eye"!
However, along with this comes the matter,
that this depends not only on the Most High Himself, as it were,
but it has also been given into the hands of the Jews,
that they must "pay" the redemption with silver and gold,
love and fear,
in order to go out from exile,
and when they will do this before the time of the end
(within the thirty days) –
the Most High will then immediately redeem "My firstborn son Israel" from exile.
Now, the question that a person does not repay within his time because it is difficult for him to pay before the time that was initially set –
when it comes, however, to going out from exile, one forgoes the confusion and difficulty of paying the silver and gold
(love and fear)
before its time,
and one indeed pays it before its time,
so that one may immediately go out from exile.
And what will be with the silver and gold? Jews answer that we will have the silver and gold –
love and fear –
after the redemption,
but now we want only one thing:
the true and complete redemption immediately and instantly! As it was at the time of the Exodus from Egypt that "the place did not delay even the blink of an eye." And especially now that "all the appointed times have passed,"
therefore we want to have the redemption immediately,
and simply –
on this very Shabbat!
Because among Jews there is no delay,
Jews always act with alacrity,
as explained in the Iggeret HaKodesh that "the alacrity of our father Abraham, peace be upon him, stands forever for us and for our children until the end of time, etc."
(as discussed numerous times).
A scholar of the revealed Torah comes and asks questions:
If we will go out of exile on the day of Shabbat –
what will be then with the parcel,
we may not carry it?!
They say to him:
Leave the parcel in exile –
and go out of exile yourself!
He argues:
It is his parcel,
and "the righteous, their money is dear to them, etc." even a small coin,
and the parcel is worth more than a small coin,
and especially since it is a red parcel...
They say to him:
Tie the parcel around your neck –
as is the custom of Israel –
and dance out of exile!
He argues:
How can he now
(on the day of Shabbat)
go out of exile –
he must soon make Havdalah,
and after Havdalah he has a position and must conduct business and speak on the telephone about all those matters about which one may not speak on Shabbat?!
They say to him:
You have a divine soul,
a part of God from above literally –
which is your essence,
and the soul never went into exile and no one is a master over it
(as will be explained below) –
so obey your divine soul,
and your divine soul wants you to already go out of exile!
And you also have a "foolish old king" who tells you that your position and your business are the main thing –
do you then need to prove to everyone that the foolish and old and stupid one rules over you?!...
Nevertheless, he specifically wants to lie in the material world,
the physical world is not enough for him,
he specifically must have the material world and make from materiality –
physicality! But even so –
at least do not hinder your divine soul,
your part of God from above literally!
How much time do you spend on your animal soul,
perhaps you will sometimes think about your divine soul as well?!
And although not with our will we went into exile and not with our will we will go out of exile
(as the saying of the Baal HaHilula) –
this is only with regard to will,
but one must cry out that we want to already go out of exile,
"Until when,"
"Enough of exile"!
And together with this one must know,
as the Baal HaHilula continued,
that although not with our will we went into exile and not with our will we will go out, the soul never went into exile,
and from that aspect he has the power to stand above exile,
and he should not think about his position and the like,
but his only thought and desire is only –
that he wants to go out of his exile
And in the place where a person's thought is, there he is,
together with his table and his chair and all his affairs he finds himself in the place of his thought,
even if that is "above him,"
as is known that from the verse "Seraphim stand above Him" we learn that in the place where a person's thought is, there he is,
that although the place is "above Him" from the level of the Seraphim,
but from the aspect of their thought and longing to stand there –
they are actually "standing above Him"!
One comes with a claim –
that it is the day of Shabbat,
in which there is no sadness and one must then be in delight and joy –
so why does one come to distress Jews that they find themselves in exile and must cry out "Until when"? And especially since you yourself have said that now especially one should be in great joy?
They say to him that there is no contradiction at all:
Go around and cry out and storm out of joy and goodness of heart that we want to have the redemption!
And as the ruling of the Rambam,
then "the joy that a person rejoices in the performance of the commandments is a great service." Consequently, the Rambam rules:
A Jew hears this –
he goes out and cries out with great joy that the Almighty must already take the Jews out of exile!!
One comes and argues –
that the custom of our fathers is in our hands,
he did not see that his grandfather should cry out that one must go out of exile!
Your grandfather, however, also never read a newspaper! And the Sabbath day was for him a day of rest and a day of holiness and there is no sadness in it,
and he did not speak any matters of the profane which one may not speak –
so why do you compare yourself to your grandfather?!
And in general –
what does it have to do with your grandfather? We are, after all, in exile,
and the Divine Presence is in exile and all the angels and all the Jews are in exile,
and the main point –
a person is close to himself –
you yourself are in exile,
consequently, you certainly must want to go out of exile!!
Afterwards, they will write to me after Havdalah,
that one should know that one has a physical body,
and one must guard the health of the body,
and eat and drink and sleep and not practice fasts, etc.
Here, however, all these arguments are not relevant –
the main point is:
go out of exile!!
If you have questions –
leave the questions in exile and go yourself out of exile! If you want to take the questions –
in good health,
go out of exile together with the questions,
and Tishbi will resolve questions and difficulties,
but the questions should not confuse you and hold you back from going out of exile!
He argues,
that it is the Sabbath day,
a day of delight –
why must one stir oneself,
and especially when one stirs oneself,
it harms eating and drinking and the health of the body –
it is as stated:
there is no time for all these matters –
one must go out of exile!
And this is the sole thought and will,
and in the place where a person's thought is, there he is
(as above)!
And may it be His will that all Jews should already go out of exile,
"with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters",
also the Jews who have questions and who want to stick and rise specifically in exile,
For the "And it was when Pharaoh sent" is already here –
with Pharaoh one is already finished,
and from the side of Pharaoh it is "against the will of Israel, he will drive them out of his land",
the only hindrance is from the side of the Jews,
they only need to add their little finger,
and with one thought of repentance one becomes a complete righteous person,
and so too regarding the righteous –
it is to bring the righteous back in repentance,
And everyone goes out of exile with joy and with a good heart.
This is also connected with the fact that before the Sabbath, a beverage was sent regarding a matter of spreading the wellsprings outward
(which brings the redemption)
which began before the Sabbath and its continuation is on this Sabbath and afterwards after the Sabbath.
So too, a beverage was sent for several farbrengens or "conclusions"
(or as it is called by another name)
which will take place in the coming days.
They should, as usual, include all those present and all those gathered here in the matters of joy –
through this, that they will all approach and take the beverage and distribute a part of it to them,
and the remainder should be distributed at the farbrengens,
as a continuing action from the farbrengen.
And they should also announce where it will be and when it will be,
and invite everyone with a pleasant countenance,
so that whoever wishes can come there.
And may it be His will that from this time of the desire of desires,
"the inheritance of Jacob",
one should come to the meal of Melaveh Malkah,
the meal of David, the king, the Messiah,
in the true and complete redemption through the Holy One, blessed be He, in His honor and in His essence,
and with joy and with a good heart.

The point of the explanation in Rashi
(in brief):
It was said several times that when a child of five [studying] Mikra has a difficulty in the plain meaning of the verse,
he waits until the end of the topic,
because after he will learn the entire topic, perhaps his difficulty will be answered.
So too in our case:
When one learns the portion until the end,
one sees that from the plain meaning of the verses it is
(Rashi)
necessary to explain that "an omer per head" means exactly an omer, no less and no more
(and not that the Torah speaks in general terms):
In the continuation of the portion it states:
"And it was on the sixth day, they gathered double bread, two omers for one, and all the princes of the congregation came and told Moses",
and Rashi explains:
"They asked him, 'What is this day different from other days?'
And from here one can learn that Moses had not yet told them the portion of the Sabbath etc. until they asked this etc." And Moses answered them,
that the "double bread, two omers for one" was for two days –
the sixth day and the Sabbath day.
And according to the plain meaning of the verses it is understood,
that not only the princes of the congregation had then "two omers for one",
but so it was with all Jews,
and for all Jews this was a novelty,
all the more so from the fact that it was a novelty and wonder for the princes of the congregation,
to such an extent that they came to ask Moses, "What is this day different from other days?"
One sees from this that from Above, every Jew received on the sixth day "two omers for one".
[And even without this, one cannot interpret here that "they gathered double bread, two omers for one" refers to the gathering. One cannot say that they were such great stubborn people,
that after five days in which they saw that "he who gathered much did not have more",
they would at all continue to gather more on the sixth day,
and especially –
double,
and exactly double (!
) relative to the previous days (because even he who gathered much on the previous days simply did not gather two omers) –
for this one would need to be more stubborn than oneself! One must say that each one of them actually received "two omers". And in the language of Rashi:
"When they measured their gathering in their tents, they found double"].
And since the verse continues that the "double bread"
(which they received)
was "two omers for one",
exactly two omers
(and here one cannot say that "two omers" is in general terms,
because if so, it should have said "double bread" simply),
it is proven from this that on the other days
(when one does not need to have manna for two days)
each Jew received half of the "two omers for one" of the sixth day –
that is, exactly one omer per head.
And that which in the verse it says "each man according to his eating"
(even though it was "an omer per head" exactly) –
the explanation of this is explicit in Rashi on Parshat Bo
(Bo, [on the topic of] the Korban Pesach):
"Each man according to his eating –
one who is fit to eat,
excluding a sick person and an old person who cannot eat a kezayit".
The lesson in the service of man from this topic in the notes on the Zohar –
the advantage of giving charity before the request of the poor person over giving after his request – is:
the necessity of the matter of a pleasant countenance in all matters of service,
and certainly in all matters and details of the mitzvot of charity and acts of kindness.
And based on this, one can add an explanation in the reason for the presumption "a person does not pay within his term"
(which is brought in today's lesson of the Rambam):
The reason for the presumption
(as it stands in the early authorities)
is as above –
because the borrower initially fixed the time for payment because he estimated that he would not have the money to pay until that time,
and through this he revealed his opinion that he will not pay within the time.
And one can say that for this reason this is also a presumption on the part of the lender that he does not come to demand payment before the time –
because this enters into the category of a pleasant countenance which must be on the part of the lender in relation to the borrower –
since the borrower determined a specific time for payment of the debt,
because he estimated that until that time he will not be able to pay,
the lender must
(from the aspect of the matter of a pleasant countenance)
refrain from going to demand payment from the borrower of the debt within the time,
even if he sees that the borrower has the money within the time to pay,
all the more so from this, that even after the time has passed he must also have caution not to transgress the prohibition "you shall not be to him as a creditor",
all the more so within the time.
Based on this –
that a pleasant countenance is a general category in all the details of the commandment of charity and acts of lovingkindness –
one can also explain why the Rambam does not mention "rich people" at the beginning of the laws of lender and borrower,
and writes only "it is a positive commandment to lend to the poor of Israel",
even though the commandment is also to a rich person who is poor at that time:
If the Rambam had specified "rich people" –
it would have given a place for the opposite of "upright dispositions",
and the opposite of a pleasant countenance in the loan to the rich person who is poor at that time,
because knowing that he is a rich person,
one will have towards him a different attitude than towards a truly poor person whose "heart is broken and crushed"
(as the Rambam writes earlier in the laws of gifts to the poor,
and in the laws of the festival and the laws of Purim).
Therefore the Rambam does not specify that the commandment is also to rich people,
and writes only "it is a positive commandment to lend to the poor of Israel",
which also includes a rich person who at that time is poor,
for then
(at that time)
he is not a rich person who needs a loan,
but a poor person,
exactly like a truly poor person,
therefore it is a commandment to give him a loan,
with the same attitude and pleasant countenance as towards a truly poor person*.
So it is also in the inner aspect of matters:
In relation to the revelations that will be in the future redemption,
the revelation of the innerness of Atik,
and "they shall all know Me" –
all Jews are,
even the greatest Tannaim and Amoraim and great ones of Israel of all generations,
poor in knowledge
(there is no poor person except in knowledge),
and they all equally need to come to the charity of the Holy One, blessed be He,
of which "to You, Hashem, is the charity",
which is His commandment, the Holy One, blessed be He,
because specifically the Supreme One is infinite,
And certainly the Supreme One will fulfill the commandment of charity and with a pleasant countenance,
and give every Jew with a pleasant countenance "from His full, open, holy, and broad hand" in all matters even during the time of exile,
and the main point –
to give them the true and complete redemption,
immediately and literally,
"it will not delay even for an instant",
"an instant" of a flesh and blood being,
literally speedily in our days.
His Holiness, our master, teacher, and Rebbe, may he live for many good days, Amen, commanded to sing the songs for the third meal –
