English translation 1
It is Shabbat Parshat Chazak,
It is Shabbat Parshat Chazak,
as is the custom of Israel that when one finishes the reading of a book of the Torah, one says "Chazak, chazak, venitchazek"1.
And on this Shabbat Chazak, one finishes the reading of the book of Bereishit,
which is called by the name "Sefer HaYashar" because "this is the book of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, who are called Yesharim"
(as explained in the Midrashim of our Sages and in the commentaries)2,
"that is, the book of Bereishit in which the deeds of the Patriarchs are written"3,
there it discusses the chronicles of the days of the Yesharim –
the Patriarchs
(and the Tribes4).
It is understood that although in the book of Bereishit,
"Sefer HaYashar",
it discusses the deeds of the Patriarchs,
nevertheless, since this is a part of the eternal Torah,
one must derive from it a directive in the service of Hashem, standing at the conclusion of this book of the Torah.
And all the more so and a fortiori from this, since from every letter and word in the Torah one must derive a directive,
certainly from an entire book of the Torah,
and certainly from the first book of the Torah,
which indicates that it is first in importance5,
for also the order in the Torah is Torah6 and instruction7.
And so great is the emphasis on the fact that the Torah begins with the book of Bereishit,
that even Rashi –
whose subject is "I have come only for the plain meaning of Scripture"8
[in Rashi there is also "the wine of the Torah"9,
but primarily it is the plain meaning of Scripture] –
at the beginning of his commentary on the Torah,
at the beginning of the book of Bereishit
(when he begins to teach for the first time a child of five years of age [the study of] Mikra) –
questions the order with which the Torah opens and begins
("the beginning of Your word"10)
with "Bereishit":
"The Torah should not have begun except from 'This month is for you'11, which is the first commandment that Israel was commanded; and what reason did [the Torah] open with Bereishit, etc.",
by which he means the entire book of Bereishit
(until the portion of "This month is for you")12.
One sees from this the great precision in the fact that the Torah begins with the book of Bereishit
(not with the book of Shemot, etc.),
and in this itself –
with "In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth"
(not with "This month is for you" which is in the book of Shemot).
It is understood that when one finishes the first book of the Torah –
the book of Bereishit –
there must certainly be from this a directive in the service of Hashem. And an eternal directive in all times and in all places. And although one finds oneself entirely in a different time and a different place and a different situation than the place, time, and situation discussed in the book of Bereishit
(regarding the time at the beginning of creation,
"In the beginning, Hashem created the heavens and the earth" and regarding the Patriarchs),
up to the essential difference from one extreme to the other –
that in the book of Bereishit it discusses before the giving of the Torah,
nevertheless, this is a part of the eternal Torah,
therefore there is certainly from this an eternal directive in all times, places, and situations,
also after the giving of the Torah13.
And this directive is primarily and with emphasis and openly at the time when one finishes the book of Bereishit and is at the point of transition to the book of Shemot,
although from this the directive is drawn forth for all times14.
And the matter15:
The content of the book of Bereishit
(the beginning of the entire Torah)
will be understood from Rashi's explanation of the reason why the Torah "opened with Bereishit"
(and not with "This month is for you"),
the point of which is
(as follows) –
that this expresses the general content of the purpose of the creation and service of man in the service of refinement,
to refine himself and to refine the world;
לברר את עצמו ולברר את העולם;
and the continuation of the book of Bereishit
("Sefer HaYashar")
discusses the deeds of the Patriarchs to begin to perform the service
(the service of refinement),
for the deeds of the Patriarchs are the root, preparation, and empowerment for the service of the children,
for the service of Jews in the generations after this and after the giving of the Torah, etc.16 –
"The deeds of the Patriarchs are a sign for the children"17.
And after the book of Genesis comes the book of Exodus. The concept in this is,
that after one knows
(in the book of Genesis)
about the content of the service of clarification,
and about the giving of power and preparation for this from the deeds of the Patriarchs,
until in a manner of "be strong, be strong, and we will be strengthened"
(the conclusion of the book of Genesis) –
then one has the power to enter into the book of Exodus,
the book of exile,
where it begins to speak about the service of Jews in exile
(Egypt),
where they must actually begin to perform the primary service of clarifying the world,
and afterwards it tells about the drawing down of Divinity into the world that was accomplished through the exile and the Exodus from Egypt,
until the perfection in this at the Giving of the Torah and afterwards,
until the ultimate perfection –
in the future redemption. And as follows.
And the explanation:
The reason why the Torah "begins with Bereishis" and not with "This month is for you, which is the first commandment that Israel was commanded" –
even though the entire matter of the Torah is ostensibly to tell Jews the commandments that they must fulfill –
Rashi explains:
"Because of 'the strength of His deeds He declared to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations'18,
so that if the nations of the world say to Israel, 'You are robbers, for you conquered the lands of the seven nations,'
they say to them, 'All the earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He;
He created it and gave it to whomever was upright in His eyes; by His will He gave it to them, and by His will He took it from them and gave it to us.'"
The question arises:
It is not possible to say that because of a claim of a gentile as a gentile
("You are robbers"),
one would change the order in the Torah and begin with "Bereishis" instead of "This month is for you,"
for who takes into account what a gentile claims?!
One must say,
that the claim of the nations is not because they are gentiles,
but rather because the claim
("You are robbers")
is a justified claim on their part according to the true nature of things,
for the Supreme One created gentiles in the world and He gave them the land of Canaan by His will,
"by His will He gave it to them,"
therefore they have a justified claim
(from their own level)
that "you are robbers."
And therefore "He began with Bereishis" –
because the only answer to the claim of the nations that "you are robbers" is
(not that they are not correct from their perspective,
but rather that there is a higher level of which they do not know),
that "the strength of His deeds He declared to His people"
(specifically to Jews)
so that it should be "to give them the inheritance of the nations,"
but to the nations "the strength of His deeds" was not told and revealed,
therefore they have
(from themselves,
as they were created)
a justified claim that "you are robbers who conquered the lands of the seven nations,"
until one answers them that their claim is indeed valid from their perspective because they do not know about "the strength of His deeds,"
but in truth there is a higher matter,
that "the strength of His deeds He declared to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations,"
and from that perspective the claim falls away,
because "all the earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He;
He created it and gave it to whomever was upright in His eyes; by His will He gave it to them, and by His will He took it from them and gave it to us."
5. That the Supreme One initially created the world in a manner that there were gentiles and Jews there,
and "by His will" He gave the land of Canaan to the gentiles,
"by His will He gave it to them,"
through that which "the Canaanite was then in the land, going and conquering the land of Israel, etc."19,
and through this the Supreme One gave a place for the claim of the nations that "you are robbers";
און דורך דעם האט דער אויבערשטער געגעבן אן ארט אויף א טענה פון גוים אז "לסטים אתם";
and only afterwards was "by His will He took it from them and gave it to us."
And the reason for this was20,
that the Supreme One wanted that specifically from a land of the nations,
the land of Canaan,
should Jews,
through their service,
make the land of Israel,
the holy land,
through that which first one makes from "the land of Canaan" a matter of
("Canaan" from the term)
commerce21,
and one makes from it "the land of his father's sojournings,"
until one makes from it "the land of Israel"
(as explained in the discourses of Chassidus).
And therefore, initially it was "by His will He gave it to them" –
the will of Hashem was that the land should be "given to them,"
to the nations,
with the intention that afterwards it should be "by His will He took it from them and gave it to us" –
that Jews,
to whom was revealed "the power of His works"
("the power of His works He declared to His people"),
should come and conquer
(by the power of their service)
"the inheritance of the nations" and transform it into the Holy Land through their revealing there how it was created and connected to the Supreme One,
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,"
"all the earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He
(and through this to reveal that)
He created it and gave it to whom it is upright in His eyes; by His will He gave it to them and by His will He took it from them and gave it to us";
הוא בראה ונתנה לאשר ישר בעיניו ברצונו נתנה להם וברצונו נטלה מהם ונתנה לנו";
Jews must reveal in "the inheritance of the nations" the "power of His works" which "He declared to His people"
(specifically to Jews),
and through this reveal a level in the will of Hashem which also contains within it the aspect of "the power of His works"22,
which is higher than the level of the simple will of Hashem that was in "He gave it to them." And through this, Jews elevate "the inheritance of the nations" to a most exalted level
(incomparably more than it would have been while in the possession of the nations).
And the reason for this, that "the power of His works He declared to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations" specifically to Jews –
is also understood intellectually,
for "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,"
"In the beginning for the sake of Israel"
(as Rashi explains immediately after this23),
and this itself is also understood intellectually –
for "In the beginning for the sake of the Torah,"
and two thousand years the Torah preceded the world24 –
therefore the entire world was created for the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel.
Just as this is regarding all of creation
(that "In the beginning for the sake of the Torah etc. and for the sake of Israel")
so too is it regarding the Land of Israel,
that it was initially created "for the sake of Israel."
Only that the Supreme One desired that this should come to Israel specifically through their service in conquering the Land of Israel,
and transforming it from a land of the nations to a Holy Land,
therefore initially it was "by His will He gave it to them,"
on condition and with the intention that Jews, through their service, should conquer it and transform it into the Land of Israel. And this intention the Supreme One revealed specifically to Jews –
"the power of His works He declared to His people" so that it should be "to give them the inheritance of the nations,"
that they should transform from "the inheritance of the nations" the Land of Israel,
and through this reveal a level in the will of Hashem as it is from the aspect of "the power of His works,"
higher than the level of the will of Hashem in "by His will He gave it to them,"
and consequently they elevate "the inheritance of the nations" to a level that is incomparably higher than it would have been remaining with the nations.
And based on this it is understood,
that when Jews answer this to the nations –
the entire claim of "you are robbers" falls away,
because
[in addition to the simple explanation of this,
that "all the earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He; He created it and gave it to whom it is upright in His eyes; by His will He gave it to them and by His will He took it from them and gave it to us,"
there is this explanation in greater depth]:
Through the conquest of the land by Israel, Jews take nothing from the nations
(so that it would be fitting to call them "robbers"),
but on the contrary:
they effect an elevation in "the inheritance of the nations" that the nations could not effect –
they elevate and raise "the inheritance of the nations" to an incomparably higher level –
the level of the Land of Israel,
the Holy Land! And Jews have the power to do this because "In the beginning for the sake of Israel" and "the power of His works He declared to His people,"
they know the inner intention in the deeds of the Holy One, blessed be He,
including in that which "by His will He gave it to them"
(to the nations) –
in order that Jews should transform it and elevate it to the level of the Holy Land
("to give them the inheritance of the nations").
Until that through this
(that Jews conquered the Land of Israel from the nations)
there also comes the most supreme elevation
(as it will be in the future to come)
that in the future the Land of Israel will spread to all the lands25 –
which is both an elevation for the other lands
(that they too are elevated to the level of the Holy Land),
and an elevation for the Land of Israel,
that it becomes spread not only in the manner of "Hashem your God will expand your border"26,
but to all the lands:
If the Land of Israel remains "an inheritance of the nations",
it cannot be spread to all the lands,
because then the nations of all the lands will claim to the nations to whom the land of the seven nations belongs that "you are robbers", and what right do you have to spread to the other lands;
ווייל דעמולט וועלן די גוים בכל הארצות טענה'ן צו די גוים צו וועמען עס באלאנגט ארץ שבעה עמים אז "לסטים אתם" און וועלכע רעכט האט איר זיך צו מתפשט זיין בשאר הארצות;
However, when it belongs to Jews –
for the entire world was created "for the sake of Israel" and "He declared the power of His works to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations" –
the nations of the other lands will have no claims,
because through the future spreading of the Land of Israel to all the lands, Jews take nothing from the other lands,
but on the contrary –
through this, Jews elevate the other lands to a higher level than the other lands were in themselves:
In themselves, the other lands are mere lands,
which are connected to the measurement and limitation of the nations of the world,
However, through the Land of Israel spreading to all the lands,
they are raised to the level of holiness of the Jews.
And by way of example, this is regarding the clarification of the nations themselves in the future:
In themselves, the nations are on a level of "and strangers will stand and shepherd your flocks",
and are obligated only in the seven commandments of the sons of Noah,
which are connected to the measurement and limitation of the world
(He created it to be inhabited);
(לשבת יצרה 29);
However, through their being clarified by Israel,
they are raised to a more elevated level.
Likewise, this is also regarding the clarification of the lands of the nations,
that in themselves they are mere lands,
However, through the Land of Israel spreading to all the lands, they are elevated to the level of the Holy Land.
[And in order to prepare the entire world for this matter of the future spreading of the Land of Israel to all the lands,
one must arrive at the service of Jews now to make in every place in the world "the Land of Israel",
as follows (section 9)].
Consequently, the entire claim of the nations against the Jews that "you are robbers who conquered the lands of the seven nations" falls away,
since the Jews answer the nations that they take nothing from them,
but they elevate the lands of the nations to a higher level.
The only claim that the nations can then have is to the Almighty:
Why did He arrange that the nations must come to this, that the Jews should elevate them,
The Almighty could have revealed "the power of His works" and given the Torah to the nations themselves,
they would be able to elevate themselves,
just as Jews elevate themselves?!
The Gemara says,
that they will indeed claim thus in the future.
And they will be granted
(from which it is understood that the claim has a place)
and they will be tested with a "light mitzvah, and it is called Sukkah",
and the nations themselves will see that they cannot fulfill it,
as explained in the commentaries].
Just as the Almighty established in the world in general that there should be Jews and nations
(to distinguish),
and initially "by His will He gave it to them" as "an inheritance of the nations"
(and therefore there is a place for the claim "you are robbers"),
with the intention that Jews, through their service, should conquer the land and transform it into the Land of Israel
("by His will He took it from them and gave it to us") –
so too is this reflected in particular in the service of each individual:
Every Jew has within him the good inclination
(the Israel within him)
and the alien god that is within you,
the gentileness that is within him. And the alien god that is within you,
the gentileness within him,
claims that "you are robbers". And to this claim the good inclination within him answers that "He declared the power of His works to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations".
That is, in this is expressed the general principle of the service of man:
Man was given two paths,
"the life and the good" and the opposite path,
and the good inclination tells him to conduct himself on the path of life and good,
and the evil inclination tells him to conduct himself in the opposite manner.
And the reason why man was given both paths
(even though the intention is that he should conduct himself in the good manner as the good inclination tells him) –
is because it is desired that man should come to this through his service for its own sake,
through "and you shall choose life":
The power of choice is the quality that exists in the human being with which he is similar to the Holy One, blessed be He,
"Behold, the human being has become like one of Us":
But how is choice expressed in practice –
specifically when one has before oneself two paths,
and two paths that are equal
(externally),
and one has the ability to choose both paths. If he has only one path,
or he sees that only one path is good and has virtues unlike the other path which is the opposite of good and has no virtues whatsoever,
then the matter of choice does not apply,
because he has an inclination toward one side. Choice is specifically when one has two equal paths,
and he has no inclinations to choose one of them,
and nevertheless "and you shall choose life",
then choice is expressed in practice and openly when he chooses one of the ways.
And although it is written there "and you shall choose life" and the opposite side is the opposite of life –
this, however, is not the reason why he chooses.
That is, true choice means that he does not choose because this is a matter of life and good,
rather he chooses it because "Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us",
because so the Almighty commanded
("He declared the power of His works to His people").
As the Rambam writes at the end of the Laws of Repentance that the perfection of service is specifically service for its own sake,
"Abraham who loved Me",
not for any reason or reward,
not for good and life in this world and even not for good and life in the World to Come,
only because the Almighty so commanded. Only afterward
(after he chooses to conduct himself in the way of good because the Almighty so commanded)
does he also receive physical and spiritual promises,
"life and good".
It follows,
that in order for there to be the matter of the service of the human being in general,
and the matter of choice to fulfill the will of God only because the Almighty so commanded
(and not for any inclinations or ulterior motives) –
there must be two equal paths,
"life and good" and the opposite path,
and there must be both the good inclination and the "alien god within you" that has a justified claim
(apparently)
that "you are thieves",
and this gives the possibility that a Jew, through his service, should choose to conduct himself as the Almighty desires.
[As discussed earlier how this is in the world in general,
that although "In the beginning, for the sake of Israel",
it was, however, "by His will He gave it to them" as "an inheritance of nations",
in order that Jews should conquer it through their service].
And in more particularity, this is expressed in the levels within the service of the human being itself:
The order in the service of the human being is that one does not immediately come to the level of service for its own sake
(the perfection of service).
As everyone understands by himself:
Granted, after the study of Torah,
he knows that the service must be for its own sake;
ווייסט ער אז די עבודה דארף זיין לשמה;
but before he studies Torah,
how can he know this? The answer to this is,
that also before and as a preparation for the giving of the Torah there was the matter of the precedence of "we will do" to "we will hear",
service for its own sake
(not for the sake of something else).
But this itself is also a level in service;
אבער דאס גופא איז אויך א דרגא בעבודה;
the order, however, is that one begins with service not for its own sake,
as the Rambam explains there,
that before one reaches the level of "Abraham who loved Me",
service for its own sake,
one must perform the service not for its own sake,
"A person should always engage in Torah and commandments not for their own sake",
and the reason –
"because from not for their own sake, one comes to for their own sake",
until the well-known explanation of this,
that the "inner" and inwardness of the service "not for its own sake" is service "for its own sake".
That is, that at the beginning of service,
when he has not yet completely overcome the claim of the evil inclination,
he must perform the service not for its own sake,
because he has not yet reached the level of service entirely from the aspect of choice because of that which "Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us". And only after some time following his service does he come to the level of service for its own sake.
According to what was explained above, it comes out,
that the opening of the Torah with the book of Genesis,
beginning from "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" –
"Because the strength of His works He related to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations, etc." –
expresses the content of the entirety of man's service in the service of clarifications,
both the service in clarifying the world,
and also the service with oneself,
both of which must come through the introduction of "by His will He gave it to them",
for this gives the possibility for the matter of choice and service to transform it and to reveal in it the will of God –
"the strength of His works",
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth".
With this is understood the reason why the entire Torah "begins with Genesis"
(and not with "This month is for you") –
"Because the strength of His works He related to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations, etc.",
which gives the strength to a Jew that, not looking at that which there is
(the claim of) the nations
(that "you are robbers")
and "the inheritance of the nations" which "by His will He gave it to them"
(in order that there should be the matter of choice and service),
he has the strength from this that "the strength of His works He related to His people" to reveal how "the inheritance of the nations" is connected to the Most High,
"the entire earth is of the Holy One, blessed be He",
and to transform it into a holy land.
All this speaks about the content of man's service which is expressed in the opening of the Torah
("begins with Genesis") –
the service of clarifying the world,
"the strength of His works He related to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations". But this speaks about the future –
still before the service in this in actuality.
Afterwards comes the continuation of the book of Genesis where the Torah begins to tell how the Patriarchs began to carry out the service in actuality of clarifying the land of Canaan –
first through Abraham,
afterwards through Isaac,
and afterwards through Jacob;
און דערנאך ע"י יעקב;
And "the deed of the Patriarchs is a sign for the children" –
the deed of the Patriarchs gives strength to their children after this that they should continue the service,
until the completion of the service in this –
the conquest of the land of Israel in actuality
(which the Patriarchs did not accomplish),
and from this to make a holy land in actuality and in a revealed way,
until –
the conquest of the entire world,
whose completion will be in the future redemption.
Regarding the service of the children, the discussion begins in the book of Exodus,
which comes after the book of Genesis..
And the explanation:
The difference between the book of Genesis and the book of Exodus is:
The book of Genesis is called "the book of the upright" because "this is the book of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob who are called upright". For they stood at the ultimate level of elevation:
A) Their primary service was in the land of Israel,
as explained in the books that that which the Patriarchs fulfilled the entire Torah before it was given was only while being in the land of Israel,
not outside the land
[And according to this it is explained how Jacob married two sisters,
even though the Patriarchs fulfilled the entire Torah –
because this was outside the land].
B) By the Patriarchs the matter of true exile was not applicable,
therefore "as long as Joseph was alive –
which is until the conclusion of the book of Genesis
("and Joseph died") –
they did not have the burden of Egypt" *46.
However, in the book of Exodus the discussion immediately begins regarding the enslavement of the Jews in the exile of Egypt in actuality –
"And these are the names of the children of Israel coming to Egypt" –
a most great descent.
Even when the book of Genesis speaks about the descent of Joseph to Egypt,
"and Joseph was brought down to Egypt"
(which is the beginning of the descent of the children of Israel to Egypt) –
it speaks there in an exactly opposite order than in the book of Exodus:
After the descent of Joseph to Egypt, the book of Genesis speaks about his ascent from below to above:
From his being a slave in the prison house,
he was afterwards elevated and went out from the prison house,
until he was elevated to be a "viceroy to the king",
until –
בין –
"only the throne will I be greater than you". And thus the situation remained until the conclusion of the book of Genesis
("and Joseph died").
For "as long as one of those who descended to Egypt was alive, the Egyptians did not enslave Israel".
However, in the book of Exodus it speaks about the descent to Egypt in a manner from above to below:
After the passing of the tribes, the enslavement in the exile of Egypt began,
and afterwards there was descent after descent in the difficulty of the enslavement, etc.
According to this distinction, it is understandable,
that the primary service of refining the lands of the nations began in the Book of Exodus through the service of the Jews in the Egyptian exile,
unlike the Patriarchs, with whom the true concept of exile was not applicable, and their primary service was in the Land of Israel,
therefore with them there was not the completeness of service in this regard. And therefore the Patriarchs only made the preparation for the conquest of the Land of Israel,
but the conquest itself the Patriarchs did not accomplish,
only their children,
who went through the Egyptian exile etc.
And the explanation:
We spoke earlier,
that the completeness of the service of "He has declared to His people the power of His works, to give them the heritage of the nations,"
is to accomplish the refinement throughout the entire world,
so that one should prepare all the lands for the concept of the future that the Land of Israel will spread to all the lands,
through which one elevates all the lands to a higher level than when they are under the dominion of the nations of the world
(and with this one removes the claim of the nations that "you are robbers").
Which also brings about an elevation in the Land of Israel.
In order to accomplish this, the service must be as per the well-known statement of the Tzemach Tzedek
(as already printed)
to one who wanted to ascend to the Land of Israel –
"Make here a Land of Israel!"
Since a Nasi in Israel said this and it was even printed as a directive for generations,
it is understood and simple that this is not merely a "clever saying," Heaven forbid.
Heaven forbid to say that they commanded to print as a directive for generations a "clever saying" even from an ordinary Jew,
all the more so from a Nasi in Israel!
Rather, certainly this is a true word with a true content,
and a directive for generations for each and every one –
that a Jew in any place whatsoever in the diaspora,
must make there a Land of Israel!
This is an explanation on the general concept of the exile –
that Jews have been scattered in all the places of the world:
Previously, one would explain that the reason for exile is,
because we do not currently have the power that while sitting in the Land of Israel we can draw all the holy sparks,
like it was in the time of Solomon,
that "Solomon sat on the throne of the L-rd" and he drew the holy sparks from the entire world,
the Queen of Sheba brought him holy sparks etc.
And it is like a parable of a large bonfire,
which draws to itself
all the sparks that are around it.
Unlike after the descent into exile, there is only a "small fire" which does not have the power to draw the sparks. Therefore one must himself go to every single place to refine the sparks.
This explanation, however, is not sufficient,
because on the contrary:
If you are not a bonfire –
then become a bonfire in "a mitzvah is a lamp and Torah is light" and then you will draw to yourself all the holy sparks,
like Solomon did it,
and you will not need to go there!
One must say that since Jews were sent into exile in every single place,
this is not
(only)
because they do not have the power of a large bonfire, but
(also)
because of another reason –
because in every single place the service of "Make here a Land of Israel" must be performed:
When one is a large bonfire, one can indeed remain in the Land of Israel and draw to oneself all the holy sparks from outside the Land,
but then one has only the holy sparks,
unlike the "here"
(of outside the Land)
remains "here";
בלייבט "דא" 57;
the only way to accomplish that the "here" should become the "here" and should become "Land of Israel",
is to go out in actuality into that "here",
in every single place in the world,
and make from that "here" a "Land of Israel".
And as discussed above,
that the Almighty desires that initially every place in the world should be "here",
"heritage of the nations",
and Jews through their service should transform the "here"
(from "heritage of the nations")
into "Land of Israel".
And this is the reason for the exile,
why Jews have been scattered in all the places of the world –
so that in every single place they should accomplish the service of "Make here a Land of Israel". Until in a manner that
(this becomes a vessel for)
the Land of Israel will spread to all the lands.
According to this, it is understandable
that by the Patriarchs
(in the Book of Genesis)
the perfection of the service of refining the world was not applicable –
for the main part of their service was in the Land of Israel and they had no connection with exile;
ווארום עיקר עבודתם איז געווען אין ארץ ישראל און זיי האבן ניט געהאט קיין שייכות מיט גלות;
However, at the time when the Jews entered the Egyptian exile
(at the beginning of the Book of Exodus) –
then began the main service of refining the world,
to draw down Divinity into the world. And therefore –
after the introduction of the Egyptian exile –
the actual conquest of the Land of Israel could subsequently take place.
On the other hand, however, it is understandable that "the deeds of the Patriarchs are a sign for the children":
The service of "to give them the inheritance of nations",
to refine the lands of the nations
(throughout the world)
and to make "here the Land of Israel",
which began
(mainly)
in the Egyptian exile and the conquest of the Land of Israel following that –
is indeed a difficult service,
for "by His will He gave it to them",
the Almighty established that this should be "the inheritance of nations" and that the Jews would need to conquer it through their service;
דער אויבערשטער האט איינגעשטעלט אז דאס זאל זיין "נחלת גוים" און אידן זאלן דאס דארפן כובש זיין ע"י עבודתם;
And likewise, the service within oneself to uproot the "alien god that is within you" –
is a difficult service,
because the Almighty made it so that one has both paths before oneself,
the life and the good and the opposite path,
in order that there should be a place for choice and for man's service to perform the service for its own sake,
only because "Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us".
Therefore, it is required that before one enters into exile
(Egypt)
to perform the service –
one must first have an empowerment in the service.
And this is the content of the Book of Genesis, where it speaks about "the deeds of the Patriarchs",
which are "a sign for the children" –
an empowerment for the children:
In the Book of Genesis, it is told about the promise of the Holy One, blessed be He, to the Patriarchs to give the land of Canaan to the Jews,
and about the actual deeds of the Patriarchs to refine the land of Canaan. Beginning with the service of Abraham,
that despite the fact that "and the Canaanite was then in the land,
going and conquering the Land of Israel, etc.",
Abraham performed his service in the land of Canaan,
"Arise, walk through the land, to its length and to its breadth", etc.,
as a preparation and empowerment for the conquest of the land by the children in the generations after this.
And afterwards, Isaac performed his service in the land of Canaan. And afterwards, Jacob performed his service –
"And Jacob dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan",
making from "the land of Canaan" a matter of commerce,
until –
"the land of his father's sojournings".
Until one comes to the conclusion of the Book of Genesis,
where Joseph promises that "and God will surely remember you and bring you up from this land to the land which He swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob" –
the Land of Israel.
And this is all as "the deeds of the Patriarchs" which is a "sign" and preparation and empowerment "for the children" to actually conquer the Land of Israel,
and before that –
the service of refining the land of Egypt.
And likewise, regarding man's own service to perform the service for its own sake,
from the aspect of choice –
one has upon this the empowerment from the Patriarchs,
beginning with "Abraham My beloved" whose service was for its own sake].
And to such an extent is the empowerment from the deeds of the Patriarchs to the children,
that for this the children need not toil at all. As the simple understanding of the matter:
A father bequeaths to his son from all that he has,
"The father prepared everything through his toil and his service all his days, in all that he did, with all his possessions, etc., and the son comes and inherits all the things that are prepared and standing in the possession of the father, etc." without any toil.
And as is understood from this expression "the deeds of the Patriarchs are a sign for the children":
When one gives a "sign" for a thing,
for example:
A "sign" of a chapter number in the Book of Psalms
[from "the sweet singer of Israel"],
or of a page in the Gemara or a verse in the Chumash –
even if one does not know what is discussed there,
one has a "sign" for the entire matter in its completeness without any toil.
So too regarding "the deeds of the Patriarchs are a sign for the children":
Since they are the children of the Patriarchs,
who inherit all the matters of the Patriarchs –
when they merely hear about the "deeds of the Patriarchs", it becomes a "sign for the children",
that they also have these matters. They only need to know that these are "the deeds of the Patriarchs" of theirs,
for which one also need not have any toil,
because the Jews believe this with faith,
and faith too is by inheritance
(which requires no toil),
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said: "Believers, children of believers".
Together with this, however, it is not the interpretation
that the children can lie down to sleep and be exempt from doing anything because they have everything as an inheritance from their fathers –
rather, the children must utilize the inheritance in actuality through the service of each one in his own category.
That is, together with what is said that "the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children,"
the fathers bequeath to the children from all that is theirs,
one also emphasizes "the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children,"
where "deed" is
(also)
from the term "they compel for charity,"
from the term of coercion and necessity,
that is, that also the detail that it is "the deeds of the fathers,"
that the fathers toiled in this with great labor and with hard labor etc.,
until the manner of "Abraham who loves Me,"
until that they were a chariot for G-dliness all their days etc.
(as explained in Tanya) –
this too is a "sign for the children,"
that the children must learn from this,
that also each one of them must perform his service in his own category.
From this two things are understood,
a) that the children can add even more than the fathers,
and b) the greatness of the responsibility that the children bear upon themselves,
that everyone waits,
and also the fathers who have already completed their service in perfection wait,
that they
(the children)
should complete their service,
and that everyone should already be able to go out of exile!
With this the transition from the book of Genesis to the book of Exodus is understood:
After it is said in the book of Genesis that the service must consist of "the strength of His works He declared to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations"
(the refinement of the lands of the nations),
and one has for this the powers of "the deeds of the fathers" which are "a sign for the children,"
until one concludes the book of Genesis with "be strong, be strong, and we will be strengthened,"
three times "be strong,"
for three times constitutes a chazakah,
and here one says "be strong"
(chazakah)
three times –
Then, after this giving of power,
one can afterwards enter into the book of Exodus,
the book of exile,
because one has the powers and the strengthening to perform the service in the darkness of the Egyptian exile.
Furthermore:
According to Torah, every thing has a preparation. So too regarding the books in the Torah –
one book is a preparation for the book that follows it. And as is customary at a "hadran" on a tractate,
that in addition to this that one connects the conclusion of the tractate with its beginning according to the principle of "their end is embedded in their beginning etc.,"
one also connects it with the beginning of the next tractate,
as we find in many places in the Talmud that it is explained why one tractate is adjacent to the tractate that follows it,
and sometimes it is explained that this is because of the connection of the conclusion of the first tractate to the beginning of the second tractate.
Based on this it is also understood,
that the conclusion of the book of Genesis is also a preparation for the beginning of the book of Exodus.
That is, in addition to this that the entirety of the book of Genesis is a preparation and giving of power for the service in the book of Exodus
(by virtue of "the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children"),
in this itself there is here further preparation at the conclusion of the book of Genesis.
And the concept:
Although regarding the service in the Egyptian exile it is discussed generally in the book of Exodus and not in the book of Genesis
(because the fathers had no connection with exile),
nevertheless, in particular it is already discussed in the book of Genesis regarding the beginning of the descent into Egypt,
as a preparation and giving of power
(from the fathers to the children)
for the ultimate descent in the book of Exodus
[in addition to this that the entire book of Genesis is discussed before the giving of the Torah,
when the world stood in a lowly state etc.]:
The Alter Rebbe explains in Torah Or,
that in the Egyptian exile there were two descents
(as alluded to in the double expression "we went down, we went down"):
the descent that is stated in Parshat Vayigash,
and afterwards a deeper descent that is stated in Parshat Shemot. As is evident from the simple meaning of the verses,
that already in Parshat Vayigash when Jacob and his sons descended to Egypt there was for them a descent relative to their state while in the land of Canaan,
until that the Most High had to say to Jacob "do not fear to descend to Egypt." However, the main descent and the beginning of the actual exile was in Parshat Shemot.
So too the service in the exile
(Egypt)
in the refinement of the land of Egypt already began at the end of the book of Genesis,
as a preparation and giving of power
(from the fathers)
for the perfection of the service in this
(by the children)
in the book of Exodus:
In the book of Exodus it discusses the refinement of the Egyptian exile,
and how through this one arrived at the giving of the Torah.
And similarly, this preparation and empowerment for this was also present in the first descent to Egypt of Jacob and his sons.
(In Parshat Vayigash) –
The concept of "And he sent Judah before him... to show the way before him to Goshen,"
"To establish for him a house of study from which instruction will go forth."
And this was a novelty,
because the Patriarchs fulfilled the entire Torah only in the Land of Israel, not outside the Land
(as above, section 68),
however, here Jacob established that even in Goshen in the land of Egypt
(outside the Land)
and in the Egyptian exile, one should establish a "house of study from which instruction will go forth,"
the concept of the study of Torah.
And "the deeds of the Patriarchs are a sign for the children" –
this is a preparation and empowerment that the Jewish people
(in the Book of Exodus)
in the Egyptian exile should be able to have the concept of Torah,
as preparation for the Giving of the Torah.
Also, the refinement and elevation of the Egyptian exile was in the deeds of the Patriarchs
(as a sign and empowerment for the children) –
as explained in the concept of "And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years,"
that even in the land of Egypt he lived a true life,
"And he lived" according to the true Torah. Until Rashi explains in his commentary on the Torah
(for a five-year-old studying Scripture)
that "Jacob our father did not die,"
and he does not bring the explanation in this that "just as his offspring are alive, so too is he alive,"
as the debate on this among the commentators,
and as will be explained below *82.
From the above, there is also a lesson in the service of man every single day
(for "each and every day performs its task"):
When a Jew sees that according to the Shulchan Aruch he is required to begin his day with the blessing of the Torah and the study of Torah –
he can ask the question:
"Should he not have to begin" his day only with Torah,
because all the matters that he does must be according to Torah,
consequently it would be fitting that as soon as he awakens from sleep he should sit and study the Shulchan Aruch
(or a teacher will study it with him)
in order to know what he must do.
What does he see in practice,
that one does not begin the day with the blessing of the Torah and the study of Torah,
but rather with a matter of acceptance of the yoke –
the recitation of "I give thanks before You, living and enduring King, etc."
(even before washing the hands)!
To this he says, however –
Well! So too did the Giving of the Torah begin with the preface of "we will do and we will hear"
(acceptance of the yoke);
(קבלת עול);
but afterwards...
one must immediately sit and study Torah,
just as it was at the Giving of the Torah.
What does he see in practice,
that it does not begin! After "I give thanks" there also does not come the blessing of the Torah and the study of Torah,
rather –
the morning blessings,
which speak about worldly matters –
"Who gives the rooster understanding,"
"Who clothes the naked,"
"Who straightens the bent" etc.!
And this he can also understand with difficulty,
because these are the needs of the "small world," that is man,
But afterwards he does not sit to study Torah further,
rather he prays the verses of praise,
which speak about the great world –
about cattle and animals etc. and about the entire world,
but not about Torah!
Only after all these matters does he come to the Shema,
whose concept is the blessing of the Torah,
higher than the blessing of the Torah that one recites in the morning blessings
(before the verses of praise),
but also the blessing of the Torah in the morning blessings comes at the end of all the blessings
(according to the custom of Chabad).
He does not understand at all how such an order can be,
that his daily order should begin with worldly matters until with the entire world –
everything except Torah?!
One answers him,
that so too is the order in the Torah,
that one begins speaking about the world –
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,"
and only later about Torah and commandments,
and Rashi asks the same question:
"Should the Torah not have begun except from 'This month is for you,' which is the first commandment that Israel was commanded, and what reason did He open with 'In the beginning'?" And he answers:
"Because of 'the strength of His works He declared to His people, to give them the inheritance of the nations,'
so that if the nations of the world say to Israel, 'You are robbers, for you conquered the lands of the seven nations,'
they say to them, 'All the earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He,
He created it and gave it to whomever was upright in His eyes; by His will He gave it to them, and by His will He took it from them and gave it to us.'"
What from this we also have the answer regarding the order of the daily service that does not begin with Torah,
but with prayer concerning worldly matters:
The ultimate intention is,
that he should indeed perform the service in the world,
to reveal how the world is connected with the Supreme One,
"The whole earth is of the Holy One, blessed be He,"
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
And therefore he must begin with the morning blessings concerning worldly matters
(in his small world),
and then the verses of praise,
concerning the great world –
which the prayers
(that speak about worldly matters)
give him strength so that afterwards when he goes out "from the synagogue to the study hall"
(after prayer and Torah)
into the world to "conduct himself with the way of the land,"
he should know how to engage in the world
(in "the inheritance of the nations")
and there reveal Divinity,
"the power of His works" that "He told to His people."
In the manner that the Torah begins with "the power of His works He told to His people to give them the inheritance of the nations,"
and with "the deeds of the fathers,"
so that he should know and have strength to afterwards perform the service in the world.
What this is the instruction for each and every day from the transition of the book of Genesis to the book of Exodus –
that from the opening of the Torah with "In the beginning,"
"the power of His works He told to His people to give them the inheritance of the nations" and the deeds of the fathers,
until the conclusion of the book "Be strong, be strong, and we will be strengthened,"
one has the strength to enter into exile
(that is in the book of Exodus),
into the world
("conduct yourself with the way of the land")
and there to perform the service of refining the world.
What when one knows that one has the strength from "the deeds of the fathers,"
it gives even more preciousness in the service during the time of exile of the study of Torah,
and great is study that brings to action,
in the manner of "the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children."
And this becomes a part of our deeds and our service during the time of exile upon which depends the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah,
speedily in our days, literally.
The perfection of the matters discussed above –
"to give them the inheritance of the nations" and the giving of the Torah –
will be in the true and complete redemption.
What in connection with the redemption there is a special matter connected with the women and daughters of Israel,
which on this Shabbat there occurs a gathering of the women and daughters of Israel.
In the recent years,
and especially in the most recent farbrengens one storms –
"Until when" will the exile still continue,
"all the ends have already passed,"
and after the multitude of effort and service,
according to ability and even more than ability,
it has still not come. Therefore one seeks to add even more in the service of Torah and commandments in order to already be freed from exile and bring the redemption.
However, in this one did not place
(for some reason)
a very strong attention on the special mission that the women and daughters of Israel have
(more than men)
in bringing the true and complete redemption.
It is self-understood that the arousal to bring the redemption through adding in Torah and commandments –
like the involvement in the well-known "ten campaigns" – is
(for the most part)
relevant to all Jews,
whether men,
whether women and daughters.
And even the "campaign of tefillin,"
which the commandment is only upon men,
in this also women have a part,
as is understood from the words of our sages of blessed memory that "women through what do they merit? Through bringing their sons to the synagogue and their husbands to the study hall and waiting for their husbands until they come from the study hall,"
and since she is a helper to her son or to her husband that he should engage in Torah,
and so too regarding laying tefillin,
she shares the reward with them.
And furthermore, the main point:
"Campaigns" does not mean that one should oneself fulfill the commandment,
the commandment of tefillin and the like,
rather that one should influence that
(also)
others should fulfill it. And this applies both to men and to women regarding all ten campaigns
(even a commandment that one is not oneself obligated in it).
And on the contrary:
One sees in practice that sometimes women and daughters
(a mother,
a sister,
an older sister and even a younger sister,
or a daughter)
can influence a male more that he should lay tefillin than the influence of another male
(a father,
a brother or a son).
So too the three campaigns that are primarily related to women,
candles of the holy Shabbat,
kashrut of eating and drinking and family purity –
have a relevance also to men,
of course simply. In order to kindle "the candle of his home" –
one needs a home and a room where Jews live,
also the man. In addition to that which "both men and women are obligated to have a lit candle in their homes on Shabbat, except that women are more admonished regarding it, etc."
And likewise regarding kashrut and family purity,
they have, of course, a relevance also to men.
This is, however, all the arousal to hasten the redemption through adding in Torah and mitzvot –
as through the ten campaigns and the like –
as this is relevant to all Jews
(men and women).
In addition, however, there is a special mission that was assigned specifically to women to bring the true and complete redemption,
to which attention was not paid.
That is, in addition to that which they participate in the involvement in the aforementioned campaigns,
and especially in the three campaigns
(in which they are not particularly distinguished from the men,
because the men also engage in them) –
they were given a special role in bringing the redemption,
which was not given to men,
as will be explained further.
Now –
especially since on this Shabbat a gathering of Jewish women and girls takes place –
we will speak about several points in this,
so that one may
(and one can)
add on one's own an expanded explanation,
each one according to her situation,
and the main thing –
the fulfillment of the matters in practice.
Our sages, of blessed memory, say that "in the merit
(in the merit)
of the righteous women who were in that generation, Israel were redeemed from Egypt",
through that which the women sacrificed themselves with joy and a good heart to establish homes in Israel,
sons and daughters of Israel,
"the hosts of the L-rd",
not looking at all the difficulties of the exile of Egypt and the decree of Pharaoh etc.,
and at the pain of pregnancy and the pain of childbirth and the pain of raising children etc.,
learning from Shifrah and Puah who, not looking at the decree of Pharaoh, endeavored for "and they kept the children alive" and in their merit –
"and He made for them houses",
"houses of priesthood and Levite and royalty",
And as explained in the Gemara in detail how far the women of Israel endeavored and sacrificed themselves to have children,
"when the time of their births arrives, they go and give birth in the field etc.",
and they did this without calculations of how they would guard and feed the children,
relying upon the Almighty,
as it was in practice that the Almighty guarded and fed them –
"He gathers for them two cakes, one of oil and one of honey,
as it is said, 'And He suckled him with honey from the rock and oil etc.'" And because of this the children grew up to be such children that "when the Holy One, blessed be He, revealed Himself at the sea, they recognized Him first",
even before Moses and Aaron etc.!
And in the reward and merit of these righteous women "Israel were redeemed from Egypt",
all Jews,
also Moses and Aaron and all the men.
And the explanation of this,
for seemingly the Jews already had a promise from the Almighty that "and after that they will go out etc.",
"and I will surely bring you up",
"and G-d will surely remember you and bring you up from this land etc.",
so what is added through the merit of the righteous women? The explanation of this is
(as explained in the commentaries),
that in the merit of the righteous women Israel were redeemed from Egypt before their time,
because through their self-sacrifice to raise children,
"and when they grow up, they come in droves to their homes" and they completed the hard labor,
because of which the difficulty of the bondage caused the exile of Egypt to last only two hundred and ten years and not four hundred years.
From this we learn regarding the holy special mission of the Jewish women and girls of our generation –
the generation of the heels of Mashiach –
to bring the redemption:
Just as it was in the exile of Egypt that "in the reward
(in the merit)
of the righteous women who were in that generation, Israel were redeemed from Egypt",
so it is also in every generation.
And especially is this regarding the generation of the heels of Mashiach –
the present generation –
which is a reincarnation of the generation of Egypt –
that in the merit of the Jewish women in our generation, the Jews will go out
(more quickly)
from this exile.
From this is understood the greatness of the merit and the greatness of the responsibility of the women in our generation –
being those who have the power to hasten the true and complete redemption for themselves,
for their husbands and children and families,
and for the entire Jewish people and for the entire world!
And the manner in which they do this –
is through learning from the conduct of the righteous women in Egypt:
They fulfill their holy role to establish "the legions of Hashem,"
sons and daughters in Israel who engage in Torah and commandments,
and they do this with joy and with a good heart,
even if this is connected with difficulties,
the pain of pregnancy and the pain of childbirth and the pain of raising children,
and one may have doubts about where one will have food for the children, etc.
Because one learns from the women in Egypt,
that not looking at the decrees and difficulties in the exile of Egypt where they stood in opposition to the birth of sons,
and not looking at the concerns of who will watch and feed the children,
they sacrificed themselves in order to establish "the legions of Hashem" –
all the more so in our generation,
when we do not have the decrees,
and we are even assisted in this,
one must certainly fulfill this with joy and with a good heart.
And in a broader sense, the lesson from this is,
not only regarding raising one's own children,
but also to occupy oneself with Jews around oneself and bring them closer to Judaism,
and through this to reveal that they are "the legions of Hashem."
And through this, the women in our generation have the power to hasten the true and complete redemption.
We also seek a connection of this with the current Torah portion,
when it occurs,
by Divine providence,
the gathering of the women and daughters of Israel. The Almighty helps and one finds that the aforementioned matter is further emphasized in the current Torah portion:
In the words of Jacob to Joseph before his death "And I, when I came from Padan, Rachel died upon me in the land of Canaan on the way, when there was still a stretch of land to come to Ephrath, and I buried her there on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem" –
Rashi explains,
that this comes in continuation of Jacob's request to Joseph "And I will lie with my fathers, and you shall carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burial place":
"And although I trouble you to take me to be buried in the land of Canaan, and I did not do so for your mother, for she died near Bethlehem, etc.,
to take her and bury her in Hebron, etc.,
and I did not even bring her to Bethlehem to bring her into the land (and it is known the discussion about this among the commentators what Rashi means by 'to bring her into the land') and I know that you have a grievance against me,
but know that by the word of the Almighty I buried her there so that she would be a help for her children when Nebuzaradan would exile them and they would pass by that place,
Rachel would go out on her grave and cry and beg for mercy for them, as it is said 'A voice is heard in Ramah, etc.' and the Holy One, blessed be He, answers her 'There is reward for your work, says Hashem, etc. and the children shall return to their border.'"
From this one sees the aforementioned matter
(as it was with the women in Egypt and the women in every generation,
until in our generation),
that specifically a woman in Israel –
Rachel –
has the power to bring the redemption,
as she accomplished through her prayer,
that the Almighty says "and the children shall return to their border."
And to such an extent is her power great,
that it is stated in the Midrash,
that after the destruction of the First Temple, the Almighty said to Jeremiah the prophet "Go and call Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and Moses from their graves, for they know how to weep" and they would ask the Almighty to nullify the decree. And all their efforts did not help
(as explained in detail in the Midrash),
until "Rachel our mother jumped before the Holy One, blessed be He" and she pleaded before the Holy One, blessed be He,
and specifically she succeeded,
and "immediately the mercy of the Holy One, blessed be He, was stirred and He said 'For your sake, Rachel, I return Israel to their place,
this is what is written, 'Thus says Hashem, a voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children, etc. and the children shall return to their border.'"
And based on this, one will understand the explanation in Jacob's answer to Joseph regarding that which "I know that you have a grievance against me" –
and with an introduction:
One must say that Rachel's burial "on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem" is a real deficiency,
and therefore Joseph could, according to the Torah, have a complaint against Jacob
("Is there in your heart against me").
Because this is discussed when "the days of Israel drew near to die,"
and Jacob was lying on "the bed of the Lord" at the end of his 147 years
(as "the chosen of the Patriarchs"),
and preparing to cross over into the world of truth,
and Joseph
(being a son of Jacob,
and especially "the son of his old age")
certainly knew the greatness of Jacob,
and especially at such a time –
how is it fitting that he should have a complaint against his father Jacob?!
One must say that Rachel's burial on the way was a real deficiency; therefore Joseph could and was obligated
(from the aspect of holiness)
to have a complaint against his father,
because this is the order according to the Torah: when one's father or teacher and the like does something perplexing,
one must ask him why he did so, and one must ask them for the explanation of this;
דארף אים הארן פארוואס האט ער אזוי געטאן און ער דארף בא זיי פרעגן דעם פירוש בזה;
and together with this, it does not affect his honoring of his father at all,
or honoring his teacher, and it is not thinking critically of his teacher,
because he certainly believes that there is a rationale for the conduct of his father or teacher, and they will certainly answer him
(as Jacob indeed answered him),
consequently it does not affect him in his intellect and in his attributes and in his thought, speech, and action,
but together with this it must bother him,
it affects him only "in his heart"
("Is there in your heart against me").
From this we have, incidentally, a general lesson:
There are those who make a mistake and think,
that when a great person in Israel does something perplexing,
it should not bother him,
because that one is a great person and he relies that he knows what he is doing and certainly has a rationale, etc.
The truth, however, is,
as we learn it from Joseph,
that the way of the Torah is –
that when one sees something perplexing by a great person,
it must explicitly bother him and it must be relevant to him;
דארף עס אים בפירוש הארן און דאס דארף אים זיין נוגע;
it is understood and simple that this may not affect his respect for the great person,
and it may not be thinking critically of his teacher,
because he believes with complete faith that the great person has a rationale,
but together with this the matter must bother him,
and he must ask the great person
(of course –
in a respectful manner)
for an explanation of this. And certainly he will answer him,
as it was by Jacob,
that he answered Joseph regarding his claim.
And likewise when he sees that there are two great persons,
and one has a complaint against the second because of something perplexing that the second did,
as it was in the incident with Joseph and Jacob,
he must also know that this is permissible according to the Torah.
And so too is the directive regarding the study of Torah in general:
There are those who make a mistake and think that since the Torah is the Torah of God and the Torah of truth,
when he has a difficulty in the Torah,
it should not bother him and he can go to sleep,
relying that since it is the Torah of God and the Torah of truth, the Almighty certainly knows an answer!
He does not understand a matter that a Tanna or an Amora said –
he thinks to himself:
What does the answer matter to him,
since if the Tanna or Amora said it,
it is certainly true.
The truth, however, is exactly the opposite:
The Torah was given to every Jew as "an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob,"
and the Torah demands that one understand it with comprehension and perception until the Torah is called by his name,
and when one has a difficulty it must bother him to such an extent that it does not let him sleep,
and he must toil in it until he himself finds an answer,
or ask his teacher and he will answer him!
And all the more so from this: that physical matters are relevant to him and do not let him sleep,
how much more so that this must be regarding spiritual matters,
and the study of Torah.
It is understood and simple that the difficulty does not affect his faith in the Torah of truth,
he believes that there is certainly an answer to the difficulty;
ער גלויבט אז ס'איז זיכער דא אן ענטפער אויף די קשיא;
but together with this it must be relevant to him to find the answer.
What these are the two extremes in the study of Torah:
On one side one must believe that every word in Torah is truth and holy of holies;
פון איין זייט דארף מען גלויבן אז יעדער ווארט אין תורה איז אמת וקודש הקדשים;
Together with this Torah is given over to him so that he should understand it with his intellect,
until it should become called by his name,
therefore it must be relevant to him when he does not understand something,
and he must toil until he will understand it,
or go to his teacher and ask him even one hundred times and one the explanation in this matter.
On the other hand it is understandable,
that when it speaks about the matters that Tannaim and Amoraim etc. have already revealed in Torah,
it is a waste of time that he should toil by himself to arrive at these matters,
when he already has it ready in Gemara etc.,
rather he must utilize his powers to innovate in Torah –
"to his own understanding" –
in new matters that have not yet been revealed. As is known the story with the Tzemach Tzedek in this.
Returning to our matter:
According to the above,
that one must say that the burial of Rachel on the road was a true deficiency and Joseph therefore had to
(from the aspect of holiness)
have a complaint against his father –
the question arises:
Even if Jacob's answer answers regarding himself why he buried Rachel on the road,
"and I did not go even to Bethlehem to bring her into the land",
because "according to the word I buried her there that she should be for help for my children when Nebuzaradan exiles them etc." –
there still remains seemingly a place that Rachel should have a claim:
What is she guilty that she should be buried "on the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem"
(which is indeed a true deficiency,
as is evident from that which "I knew that there is in your heart against me")?!
And regarding what is explained in the letter of the holy one that although the injurer is punished for "the evil of his choice"
(and he must ask forgiveness,
and "he shall return the stolen object")
he cannot, however, injure another unless "upon the injured it was already decreed from heaven".
From this itself it is proven,
that according to Jacob's explanation
(why he did it)
it is understandable that also Rachel is satisfied with this,
because not only was nothing lacking by her through this,
but through this there came to her a merit and an elevation,
that through her being buried there she will be "for help for my children",
"when Nebuzaradan exiles them and they will pass through there,
Rachel will go out on her grave and weep and ask for mercy for them as it is said 'A voice is heard in Ramah etc.' and the Holy One blessed be He answers her 'There is reward for your work, says the Lord etc. and the children shall return to their border'",
and she will accomplish in actuality that "the children shall return to their border" –
a thing that even the Patriarchs and Moses our teacher could not accomplish!
Therefore it is worthwhile for Rachel that she should be buried on the road,
and not in the Cave of Machpelah together with Jacob and the rest of the Patriarchs *125.
And therefore Jacob's answer was accepted by Joseph,
because Joseph understood that his mother is satisfied to forgo her burial in the Cave of Machpelah and be buried on the road in order to be able to help her children that they should go out from exile,
"and the children shall return to their border".
Upon this one sees how the matter that in the merit of righteous women Jews go out from exile is emphasized in the present portion:
Specifically Rachel our mother
(a Jewish woman)
has with power accomplished "the children shall return to their border",
the redemption of the Jews,
a thing that even the Patriarchs and Moses our teacher could not accomplish.
And this was the explanation and answer of Jacob to Joseph on his question and claim "there is in your heart against me" –
what had to be the question –
that how is it possible that Jacob buried Rachel on the road,
because since Joseph had to ask thus,
because such is the order of the Torah that when there is a question one must ask
(as above),
Jacob answered him that this is so that "she should be for help for my children etc. weeping and asking for mercy for them etc." and accomplish the redemption of the children of Israel,
"and the children shall return to their border".
And based on this, there is also a lesson regarding the exodus from Egypt in the merit of righteous women.
Even though the Almighty promised "I will surely bring you up again" that they would go out from the exile of Egypt,
they derived the aforementioned lesson from the conduct of Joseph and Jacob
(that Joseph needed the wondrous matter in the conduct of Jacob who buried Rachel on the road,
and Jacob explained it to him with intellect,
that by means of Rachel being buried on the road she would effect that the Jews should go out from exile),
that one must have some intellectual explanation why the Almighty should take the Jews out of exile,
and for this they had the explanation
(like Jacob's explanation to Joseph)
that this is as a reward
(in the merit)
of the righteous women who were in that generation who sacrificed themselves to have children
(as above, section).
From this there is a wonderful lesson for the women and daughters of Israel.
Rachel certainly knew the greatness of Jacob
[and especially since the matriarchs were prophetesses],
and also the greatness of the other patriarchs,
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
and the greatness of Sarah and Rebecca,
and the greatness of Adam and Eve –
who all lie in the Cave of Machpelah.
Nevertheless, she forgoes and gives up having the wondrous greatness of lying in the Cave of Machpelah together with her husband –
Jacob,
and together with Adam and Eve,
Abraham and Sarah,
Isaac and Rebecca,
and lying there until the end of all generations
(until the resurrection of the dead) –
because she will be able
(through the fact that her burial is on the road)
to help out her distant descendant,
in later generations,
and such a descendant who sinned,
because of which the Almighty allowed that Nebuzaradan should send them into exile
(for without this no gentile has any control over a Jew...),
is all this worthwhile to give up the wondrous greatness,
and she does it with joy and a good heart,
as long as she can help her child!
And through this she indeed helps out her children and effects that "the children shall return to their border."
And the deed of the patriarchs and matriarchs is a sign for the children and daughters –
from this the lesson for the women and daughters in Israel in our generation is understood.
From Rachel our matriarch one learns the mission and responsibility and merit that specifically a Jewish woman has –
that specifically she can save her children,
and the entire Jewish people from exile –
a thing that the patriarchs and Moses our teacher could not accomplish!
And this is such a holy mission,
that because of it it is worthwhile to forgo one's own matters,
even on being in the Cave of Machpelah.
Thus from this it is understood all the more so regarding the women and daughters of Israel now.
Now it is required that in order to help another Jew,
a Jewish child and the like,
one must give up incomparably smaller things than burial in the Cave of Machpelah until the end of all generations
(which Rachel gave up);
(פון וואס רחל האט זיך אפגעזאגט);
now one must give up small things and temporary matters,
for example –
not sleeping a night at home,
or not eating such a tasty dish and the like.
And it is also not about saving a distant descendant in later generations,
but about a Jew in this generation.
And not one who sinned and deserves punishment
(as was the case with Rachel),
but about a "captive infant among the nations,"
who is not guilty. And now it is relevant to influence all Jews,
for in this present exile not a single Jew will remain.
If so, that Rachel gave up the wondrous greatness of being in the Cave of Machpelah until the end of all generations,
in order to save Jews in later generations,
and Jews who sinned –
all the more so that a woman now must give up small things in order to help and save captive infants in our generation,
regarding whom one only needs to reveal the inner good!
And furthermore, the main point:
From Rachel one learns not only how one must act,
but also –
that when one acts in such a manner one is successful,
that just as Rachel was then successful and effected that "the children shall return to their border,"
so too one now effects that the Almighty brings
(even more quickly)
the true and complete redemption!
And one has the promise,
that when there is the "I have toiled" there will surely be "and I have found,"
in a measure incomparably greater than the toil. And especially when one will speak words that come from the heart and one will demonstrate a living example,
and one will establish houses in Israel,
"houses of priesthood, Levites, and royalty" *131 until "I have found David My servant,"
which refers to David, King Messiah, who comes unexpectedly,
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days, literally, immediately, in our very own time.
A discourse (in the form of a talk)
beginning with the verse "Judah, your brothers shall praise you."
Regarding a Rashi in our portion –
one will pause
(as mentioned previously)
on that which Rashi explains that "our father Jacob did not die":
On the verse (in chapter 49, verse 33)
"And he expired and was gathered to his people," Rashi explains:
"And death is not stated regarding him, and our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said: 'Our father Jacob did not die.'"
The stormy "blatant difficulty" arises:
In the verse it explicitly states "and he expired and was gathered,"
and the meaning of "and he expired" is that he passed away,
the concept of the opposite of life –
so how can Rashi explain that "our father Jacob did not die"!
In the Gemara the same question is asked –
"But was it for nothing that the eulogizers eulogized, and the embalmers embalmed, and the buriers buried?"
[As it states in the subsequent verses –
but according to the simple meaning, the difficulty is from the verse itself, "and he expired"],
and the Gemara answers, "Just as his offspring are alive, so too he is alive" –
but a) Rashi does not bring this down. b) Also the answer requires explanation according to the simple meaning –
because Abraham and Isaac and other righteous individuals also had "his offspring are alive,"
so why is the term death stated regarding them;
איז פארוואס שטייט בא זיי דער לשון מיתה;
in what way is Jacob different from other righteous individuals in that "just as his offspring are alive, so too he is alive"?
Furthermore:
It could be understood if Rashi had written "and our Rabbis, of blessed memory, expounded: 'Our father Jacob did not die,'"
one could interpret that this is according to the homiletical interpretation. But Rashi writes "and our Rabbis, of blessed memory, said"!
Also one must understand:
Did Jacob himself use the term death regarding himself?!
The commentators answer,
that out of his humility he did not think that he held at the level of "did not die."
But according to the simple meaning one cannot answer in this way –
because Rashi should have warned about this.
And further, and the main wonder:
Even according to the homiletical interpretation in the Gemara, the commentators struggle
(the Maharsha, etc.)
with the explanation that "our father Jacob did not die" –
so how does Rashi come and state simply, for a five-year-old studying Scripture, that "our father Jacob did not die" without any reasoning in the matter?!
And as has been discussed many times,
that one cannot say that Rashi relies on what is stated in the commentators elsewhere,
in the Maharsha,
or in the Maharal
(Gur Aryeh)
who also explains the matter at length.
In addition to this, all these explanations in the commentators,
although they are certainly true explanations, being a part of the Torah of truth –
they do not, however, suffice according to the simple meaning.
And one must say that the matter is understandable to a five-year-old studying Scripture from this Rashi itself or from what he has already learned previously.
And as will be explained below.
It is also customary to pause on a matter in the notes of my father on the Zohar of our portion.
He pauses
(in the right margin)
on what is stated in the Zohar
(page 234, side b):
"All the blessings are included in the blessings that he blessed them, such as 'Judah, your brothers shall praise you,' etc., and so all of them."
That is, that from the blessing of Judah, etc., there is a proof that Jacob blessed all the tribes.
My father explains,
that the Zohar brings the first example from Judah –
"Because until Judah, that is, Reuben, Simeon, Levi,
he did not bless them but rather rebuked them, etc.,
and the blessings began from Judah, etc.,"
as Rashi explains:
"Because he rebuked the first ones with reprimands, Judah began to retreat backward, etc.,
and Jacob called him with words of appeasement: 'Judah, you are not like them.'" And therefore, from the blessing of Judah
(which is a blessing explicitly)
there is a proof that Jacob also blessed Reuben, Simeon, and Levi.
And based on this, one can say the explanation of why the discourse in Torah Ohr at the beginning of our portion begins with the opening phrase "Judah, your brothers shall praise you,"
even though he later explains also the service of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi –
because specifically "Judah, your brothers shall praise you" is a blessing explicitly.
This, however, requires further explanation:
A) In this maamar in Torah Ohr on our parshah, he explains the concept of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi in the service of G-d. Accordingly, it is understood that the explanation of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi certainly has a connection to the verses in our parshah regarding Reuven, Shimon, and Levi,
because such is the usual order in Chassidic maamarim,
that the concepts explained in the maamar are simply connected to the verses in situ of the parshah
[and if not –
it would have had to be stated somewhere about this].
The question returns:
Since he explains the concept of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi in the service of G-d in a positive light –
and this is an explanation of the verses in our parshah regarding the three tribes –
why does he not begin the discourse starting with the first verse that speaks about Reuven,
and he begins with a later verse "Yehudah, you your brothers shall acknowledge"?
Granted, in the Zohar one can answer,
that specifically the blessing of Yehudah is a revealed blessing,
and were it not for this, one would not know that he also blessed Reuven, Shimon, and Levi;
ולולא זה וואלט מען ניט געוואוסט אז ער האט געבענטשט אויך ראובן שמעון ולוי;
but in this maamar, he does explain Reuven, Shimon, and Levi in a positive light
(in the service of G-d) –
he should have brought the verses and explained how they are blessings.
B) The explanation of the father on the Zohar that specifically the blessing of Yehudah is a revealed blessing
(which is why the discourse in Torah Ohr is "Yehudah, you your brothers shall acknowledge",
as above)
only restates the question from the Zohar
(and Torah Ohr)
on the verse:
If all the tribes
(also Reuven, Shimon, and Levi)
were blessed,
and they are all levels in the service of G-d in holiness –
why is specifically the blessing of Yehudah a revealed blessing?
And as will be explained further.
Today's lesson of Rambam is in the Laws of Sale, chapters twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four.
At the beginning of the lesson, the Rambam writes:
"A person cannot transfer ownership of a thing that has not yet come into the world, etc.,
For example, 'What this field will produce is sold to you,'
'What this tree will produce is given to you,' etc.,
he has acquired nothing."
When does this apply? When he says that he is selling the fruits that will come forth from this tree,
but "a person may transfer ownership of the body for its fruits, etc., and this is not transferring a thing that has not yet come into the world, for the body is present and he transfers ownership for the fruits,"
as the Rambam writes in the chapter after this.
Another exception to the rule that "a person cannot transfer ownership of a thing that has not yet come into the world" in today's lesson of Rambam:
"The law concerning consecrated property, the law concerning the poor, and the law concerning vows is not like the law of a layman in his acquisition, for if a person said, 'Whatever my animal gives birth shall be consecrated for the Temple maintenance,' or 'shall be forbidden to me,' or 'I shall give it to charity,'
even though it is not consecrated because it is not yet in the world,
he is obligated to fulfill his word, as it is said, 'According to whatever proceeds from his mouth, he shall do.'"
According to the principle that the Rambam writes, that "most laws of the Torah are only counsels, etc., to correct the opinions and to straighten all deeds" –
there must also be from these laws in the Rambam a lesson "to correct the opinions and to straighten all deeds." And as will be explained further.
All these matters mentioned above must be fulfilled with joy and with a good heart.
This is also connected with the fact that in the coming days, several matters of joy occur,
including also completions in the study of Torah,
and as is the custom of Israel, one connects this with a festive meal of joy.
In order to include all those assembled here in these matters,
they will,
as is customary,
now distribute to the gatherings a joyous item,
a beverage,
which the organizers of the gatherings sent in for Shabbat. Let them now come forward, and they will be distributed from the beverage,
and since it is Shabbat, let a portion of it be distributed here,
and the remainder –
at the gatherings,
which follow this farbrengen,
and since they will distribute there from the beverage of the farbrengen,
this will connect all those gathered here with the gatherings.
And through the fact that we will now also accept good resolutions in connection with the gatherings that will take place after Shabbat –
this will give even more strength to accomplish all the matters that need to be accomplished,
and in a manner of "ascending in holiness." And especially since there will also be publicizing of the matter,
which adds to the effort in this –
as brought in the previous farbrengens from the Midrash,
that "had Reuven known that the Holy One, blessed be He, would write about him, *149 'And Reuven heard and saved him from their hand,'
he would have carried him on his shoulders and brought him to his father."
And the addition in all these matters is even more relevant to our generation and our time and our situation now –
When "Behold, He
(Moshiach)
stands behind our wall, looking through the windows, peering through the lattices",
the walls of exile are already burning and they already have lattices,
and one need only completely finish breaking the walls of exile,
and in this place there should be "I will be for her a wall of fire",
And together with this –
"Jerusalem shall be inhabited as unwalled villages".
Beginning even now –
through the fact that one performs the service of "Jerusalem shall be inhabited as unwalled villages",
that one draws down the matter of complete fear of Heaven throughout the entire world –
"Make here the Land of Israel".
Which further hastens that very soon Jews will go out from exile,
"With our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters",
the completeness of the people,
and their silver and their gold with them,
the completeness of the Torah and the commandments,
and one goes into the completeness of the land,
"A land which the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year",
and there itself –
in Jerusalem, the holy city,
and there itself –
to the holy mountain,
the Temple Mount,
and there itself –
in the Holy Temple,
until the Holy of Holies,
speedily in our actual days.

Afterwards, His Holy Honor, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, may he live for many good days, Amen, began to sing "And I will pour out for you a blessing".
The explanation in Rashi:
When the five-year-old for Scripture learns the Rashi that "Death is not stated regarding him, and our Sages, of blessed memory, said 'Our father Jacob did not die'",
he endeavors to search where he has already learned a matter similar to this.
[His Holy Honor, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, may he live for many good days, Amen, smiled,
and said:]
Since he is a five-year-old for Scripture,
he remembers what he learned earlier:
He remembers that in the portion of Bereishit he learned that regarding Enoch also the language of death is not stated,
as it is stated
("and he died")
regarding all the others there:
"And Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him".
And Rashi explains:
"He was a righteous man, but it was light in his mind to return to be wicked,
therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, hastened and removed him and caused him to die before his time,
and this is why the verse changed regarding his death, to write 'he was not' in the world, to fulfill his years".
He sees from this that when the language of death is not stated regarding someone,
it does not necessarily mean that he is alive,
rather it can also mean that he is not alive,
but since his death was in an unusual manner,
"caused him to die before his time",
therefore one does not use the language of death,
rather a different language –
"he is not".
From this the five-year-old also understands regarding Jacob,
that the fact that "Death is not stated regarding him"
(rather the language "and he expired" which is a different language for the opposite of life),
does not necessarily mean that he is alive,
rather that "Our father Jacob did not die" in the usual way.
In what way was Jacob's death unusual? Regarding Jacob one cannot say that this is because "He caused him to die before his time",
for the 147 years that Jacob lived were many more years than "the span of his mother"
(Rebecca)
*159,
*159,
as Rashi had previously explained that the years of a person's life are in proximity to the span of his mother or to the span of his father. And in addition to this, Rashi would have needed to write here
(that "Death is not stated regarding him" because "He caused him to die before his time")
just as he explains it regarding Enoch.
One must seek another reason for why Jacob's death was in an unusual manner, for which reason "Death is not stated regarding him, etc., our father Jacob did not die".
The five-year-old for Scripture remembers what he learned, that the entire matter of death came as a punishment for the sin of the Tree of Knowledge –
"For on the day you eat from it you shall surely die" *160.
He understands from this,
since that "death is not mentioned" regarding Jacob,
and he knows from Enoch that this means only that his death came in an unusual manner –
he understands that "death is not mentioned" regarding Jacob because with him death did not come in the usual way as a punishment for the sin of the Tree of Knowledge. And this is the explanation of "Jacob our father did not die,"
he did not die in the usual manner –
as a punishment for the sin of the Tree of Knowledge.
That is, the foundation of the matter is,
that when it does not state the term death, it does not necessarily mean that he is alive,
rather that his death was in an unusual manner;
נאר אז זיין מיתה איז געווען באופן בלתי רגיל;
and this itself
(an unusual death)
can be in several ways –
that it comes by means of the Holy One, blessed be He, and not by means of an angel,
or that "He caused him to die before his time"
(as with Enoch),
or that it does not come as a punishment for the sin of the Tree of Knowledge
(as with Jacob).
According to this, one could still ask –
why is Jacob different from the other patriarchs,
Abraham and Isaac,
that specifically his death was not because of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge
(therefore "death is not mentioned regarding him"),
unlike Abraham and Isaac?
So this is initially not a difficulty:
not only according to the simple explanation but even according to the inner meaning of the matters, there is no difficulty why each of the patriarchs received a distinct reward,
and why each of them lived a different number of years and so forth.
Consequently, there is no difficulty why specifically Jacob's death was not from the aspect of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge,
unlike the death of Abraham and Isaac,
just as there is no question why Abraham or Isaac received other matters of reward that Jacob did not receive.
And if you wish to say –
one can also explain this
(why specifically Jacob's death was not from the aspect of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge):
The one who is five years old for Scripture learned earlier that regarding Jacob there was "his bed was complete,"
all his children were righteous.
Unlike Abraham who had a child Ishmael and Isaac who had a child Esau
(in the language of our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing:
"Abraham, from him came forth Ishmael...
Isaac, from him came forth Esau").
And according to what the one who is five years old for Scripture learned,
that the matter of Achan going out from the East is already hinted at in the birth of Zerah
(even though he was a righteous person) –
he understands,
since from Abraham "from him came forth Ishmael" and from Isaac "from him came forth Esau," it affects
(ultimately)
also
(in a subtle way)
Abraham and Isaac,
so that even if they themselves have no connection to the sin of the Tree of Knowledge,
they receive a connection to it through their children,
Ishmael and Esau. Therefore, the term death is stated regarding them,
because their death was in the usual way,
from the aspect of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge.
Unlike Jacob, whose "bed was complete,"
he had no connection with the sin of the Tree of Knowledge,
therefore "death is not mentioned regarding him,"
"Jacob our father did not die" in the usual way
(from the aspect of the punishment for the sin of the Tree of Knowledge).
But Rashi does not write this explanation
(regarding the distinction between Jacob and Abraham and Isaac) –
because according to the simple explanation there is no necessity to learn specifically in this way,
and according to the simple explanation one can explain the distinction as one wishes.
And one could elaborate on all this,
and give to a wise man and he will become wiser still.
The explanation of this matter in connection with the comment on the Zohar –
will be understood according to what is explained in the discourse in Torah Ohr, the matter of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah in the service of man:
Reuben is the service of love. Simeon is the service of fear. Levi is the service of Torah. And Judah is the aspect of thanksgiving,
the service of self-nullification. And in the order of the prayers:
Reuben
(love)
is the aspect of the first portion of the Shema. Simeon
(fear)
is the aspect of the second portion of the Shema.
Levi is the aspect of "True and firm, etc."
(which comes after the Shema).
And Judah is the aspect of the Eighteen Benedictions,
when one must stand in ultimate self-nullification,
like a servant before his Master.
And behold,
there is a fundamental difference between the services of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi and the service of Judah:
The three matters of love,
fear, and Torah can be in concealment or in revelation:
In love there is the level of hidden love that every Jew has from birth as an inheritance from our patriarchs,
and there is revealed love. So too in fear there is hidden fear and revealed fear. And so too in Torah there is how it is in concealment and how it comes out in revelation.
However, regarding nullification and acknowledgment, it is not applicable to say that it is only in concealment and not in revelation,
rather it must also be in revelation –
if the nullification is only in concealment and not in revelation,
then this is the opposite of nullification!
As we see it in the details of the laws in the Shulchan Aruch regarding the prayer of the Eighteen Benedictions, how one must be careful in the prayer of the Eighteen Benedictions even from external movements,
"One who stands before the king may not move from his place, etc.",
for apparently:
The main thing is that he should stand in internal nullification,
what difference does it make how he holds his fingers and his feet, etc.?
The reason for this is because –
when is this a true nullification,
specifically when it is also expressed in revelation and externality in the movements of his body, that he stands "like a servant before his master",
however, if the nullification remains in concealment and it is not seen in his external movements,
this is the opposite of nullification.
[This is not a contradiction to that which together with nullification the service of man must be in a manner of "and I shall walk in a broad place",
because the explanation of this is not that the nullification is in internality and in externality he stands in expansiveness,
rather that he does not stand with his own expansiveness,
but with the expansiveness of the Torah].
It follows that the service of Yehudah
(acknowledgment and nullification)
is distinguished from the three services of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi
(love,
fear, and Torah)
in that in nullification there is a necessity in the very essence of nullification,
that it should be in revelation;
אז דאס זאל זיין בגלוי;
however, love, fear, and Torah can be in concealment or in revelation.
And based on this, it is understandable why specifically the blessing of Yehudah
("Yehudah, your brothers shall acknowledge you")
is a revealed blessing,
however, the blessings of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi are in revelation matters of rebuke:
The service of Yehudah
(nullification and acknowledgment)
must be in revelation,
if it is in concealment, it is not nullification. Therefore, his blessing must also be a revealed blessing.
However, the blessings of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi
(as explained in the Zohar that they are blessings)
are in concealment,
in revelation they are words of rebuke –
which compels us to say that they correspond to love, fear, and Torah that are hidden,
as they stand
(below)
in concealment,
not in revelation. Because if the verses were speaking about revealed love, fear, and Torah –
then the blessings in the verses would also be revealed blessings.
As explained in many places,
that in the Torah there are two types of blessings:
revealed blessings that derive from revealed kindnesses. And blessings that are expressed in the language of rebuke,
which derive
(in their root)
from concealed kindnesses,
and at the time they descend below in the manner of interpretation, they are in the language of rebuke.
And through this, the difference between the blessing of Yehudah and the blessings of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi is understood:
Since the blessing of Yehudah is a revealed blessing, it shows that this is connected with revealed kindnesses.
However, the blessings of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi, which are expressed in the language of rebuke,
derive from concealed kindnesses.
Based on this, one will also understand why in this discourse in Torah Ohr he brings only the verse "Yehudah, your brothers shall acknowledge you" and not the verses in our portion regarding Reuven, Shimon, and Levi
(even though he explains their matter for superiority in the service of G-d):
In this discourse, he is coming to explain the matters of Reuven, Shimon, and Levi in the service of man in actuality
(the service of love,
the service of fear,
the service of Torah),
for the entire concept of service is necessarily a matter of revelation –
that through his service he brings out in revelation a matter and level that is otherwise
(without service)
in him in concealment.
And in our matter:
The service of love means that he brings out in revelation the hidden love that he has within him in concealment,
so that it stands in a revealed love. Because hidden love exists in man by inheritance immediately from birth,
without any service,
and the service in this consists of that which he reveals the love.
Similarly regarding fear:
Hidden fear man has before his service. The service of fear consists of that which he reveals it and brings it out into a revealed fear.
And similarly regarding Torah.
And therefore he does not bring in this discourse the verses from our portion regarding Reuben, Simeon, and Levi,
because in these verses
(where the blessings stand in a manner of concealment)
it speaks about
(concealed kindnesses –)
love, fear, and Torah as they stand in concealment,
consequently it is not fitting to bring this into the discourse where he intends to explain the service of love, fear, and Torah,
which is specifically love, fear, and Torah in revelation.
Therefore he begins the discourse
(only)
with the verse of the blessing of Judah –
"Judah, you shall your brothers praise" –
because this is a revealed blessing,
which indicates the service of self-nullification and gratitude which must always be in revelation
(as above),
and this brings out the matter that he speaks of here in the discourse –
the revealed service also of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi,
the revealed service of love, fear, and Torah.
The lesson "to correct the opinions and to straighten all the actions" from today's lesson of Rambam:
The matter of acquisition in spirituality –
is that which the Most High is "He who acquires everything" *174. Beginning from acquiring a Jew –
as our sages said "I was created to serve my Acquirer",
that is to say, that a Jew must acquire himself to the Most High,
he gives himself away to the Most High,
as He is called "my Acquirer",
"blessed is your Acquirer",
which refers to the world of Atzilut,
as explained in Chassidus that "blessed is your Maker, blessed is your Former, blessed is your Creator, blessed is your Acquirer" correspond to the four worlds,
ABiYA.
Which can be in two manners,
that he acquires a particular aspect of himself,
or "one who acquires the body for its products".
And analogous to the distinction of the levels in agency
(as discussed many times):
There is a manner where the agent gives away only his particular action to the principal. Afterwards there is a manner where he gives himself entirely away.
And the difference between them is:
When he acquires only one particular aspect,
one action,
of himself to the Most High –
it is indeed acquired to his Acquirer
(to the Holy One, blessed be He),
up to Atzilut
("blessed is your Acquirer"),
but then he can acquire only the action that has come into the world,
but not the products and actions of his that will later come forth each and every day,
because "a person cannot acquire a thing that has not yet come into the world",
for one cannot know how he will stand when the new action comes,
therefore he must acquire each particular aspect and action by itself when it has already come into the world.
Which is analogous to the service of the intermediate person –
since his essence has not been changed,
and his animal soul still stands in its strength,
he must in each service by itself again exert himself and acquire it to the Holy One, blessed be He.
He can labor and acquire one action to his Acquirer,
but with this he cannot acquire the actions that he will do tomorrow and the day after etc.,
because "a person cannot acquire a thing that has not yet come into the world",
one does not know whether he will stand accordingly regarding the actions that have not yet come into the world. Only afterwards when another action comes,
he must again begin the service anew;
דארף ער נאכאמאל אנהויבן די עבודה מחדש;
But not so when "one who acquires the body for its products",
he acquires
(not only an action and particular aspect within him, but)
his entire existence to
(serve)
his Acquirer,
then all the products and actions that he will do until the end of all generations become acquired to his Acquirer,
because "this is not acquiring a thing that has not yet come into the world, for the body is present and he acquires for the products":
"The body is present" –
he is indeed a present entity as an existence,
he has all the faculties,
the faculty of pleasure and the faculty of will and intellect and emotions and thought, speech, and action,
"with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might",
but this is all as the pleasure and will and faculties etc. of the master,
as explained in many places regarding the matter of a faithful servant and a simple servant,
that it is not the simple meaning that he does not have a "present body",
rather he explicitly has a "present body" with all the faculties,
but he is to such an extent nullified to the master,
to "my Acquirer",
that all his faculties are the faculties of the master. And since "the body is present",
and he acquires it entirely to his Acquirer –
he is automatically "acquiring the products",
all his actions even those that have not yet come into the world. Analogous to what is explained in the Siddur regarding above
(beginning with "to understand the matter of the Shofar blowing according to the intentions of the Baal Shem Tov"),
that from the essence it is then drawn into the entire order of the chain of descent –
into pleasure and into will and into all the faculties until into action in actuality.
And the order of the service in this is –
Like the order in the chapters in this lesson of the Rambam –
That first one holds at the first level in service,
In the likeness of the service of the Beinoni, which "the trait of the Beinoni is the trait of every person, and after every person one should draw" –
That one acquires each action in and of itself.
Afterwards one is elevated to a higher level
(Chapter)
In service,
A higher chapter in the Rambam –
The service of "a person acquires the body for its fruits",
That he acquires himself entirely to his Master,
So that then all of his actions are automatically acquired to his Master
("And this is not acquiring something that has not yet come into the world, for the body is extant and he acquires for the fruits").
Afterwards there is another lesson in this from the halachah in the Rambam regarding the law of consecration and the law of the poor and the law of vows:
Even when one holds at the level of the service of the Beinoni,
One only has the ability to acquire an action that has come into the world
(But not an action that has not yet come into the world) –
About what matters is this said?
When it speaks regarding "the law of an ordinary person",
Properties of the world,
Matters of free choice;
דברי רשות;
When it speaks however regarding "the law of consecration and the law of the poor and the law of vows, it is not like the law of an ordinary person in its acquisition, for if a person said, 'Whatever my animal gives birth shall be consecrated for the Temple treasury or shall be forbidden to me or I shall give it to charity,'
Even though it is not consecrated because it is not yet in the world,
Behold, this one is obligated to fulfill his word, as it is said, 'As everything that comes out of his mouth he shall do.'"
And the explanation:
When it speaks regarding acquiring matters of free choice that have not yet come into the world
(And he does not hold at the level of "a person acquires the body for its fruits",
But at the level of the Beinoni),
He goes nevertheless with his own powers,
And he himself does not have the power to acquire a thing that has not yet come into the world.
When it speaks however regarding a matter of a mitzvah
(Consecration,
Charity,
Vows) –
He has become obligated in this "to fulfill his word" and has a command "as everything that comes out of his mouth he shall do" –
Then he has in this also an assistance and power from above,
"Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us",
It gives the power that one should consecrate the thing that has not yet come into the world.
And "even though it is not consecrated because it is not yet in the world,
Behold, this one is obligated to fulfill his word, as it is said, 'As everything that comes out of his mouth he shall do'":
Even though he himself does not have the power to consecrate the object that is not yet in the world,
But the person has nevertheless obligated himself through his speech
(Consecration,
A vow or charity)
And he has a command "as everything that comes out of his mouth he shall do",
"Behold, this one is obligated to fulfill his word" meaning that even though it is known the difference between an oath and a vow,
That an oath is upon the person and a vow is upon the object *182 –
In our matter however the obligation of "as everything that comes out of his mouth he shall do" obligates the person to fulfill the vow].
And in the service of man:
Even though he does not have the power to consecrate the object because it has not yet come into the world –
But the person exists in reality and he has a Divine soul,
Which has obligated itself to give the fruits to charity
(And the like),
And "the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him"
(He has an assistance and help from above)
To fulfill the command "as everything that comes out of his mouth he shall do" –
It gives the power to accomplish the matter in actuality.
Based on this, the lesson "to correct the opinions and to straighten all the actions" from today's lesson of the Rambam is understood.
And through this one sees how one can make understood to everyone
(Even those who learn only the revealed aspect)
Matters of Chassidus as they are understandable from the halachos in the Rambam.
And it is understood that in order for this to be accepted,
There is no necessity that one should emphasize in this that they are matters of Chassidus,
And that so-and-so son of so-and-so said them,
Rather one must translate the matters of Chassidus into the letters of the revealed aspect and the Rambam etc.
And if one will only want, one can do this simply
(As one sees it from the halachos of today's lesson of the Rambam),
Even if sometimes this comes with difficulty.
And when one will speak with that person words that come from the heart, they will enter into the heart and accomplish their effect,
And especially by also showing a living example.
At some time –
And may it be His will that then very soon it should be "And these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt" –
"Reuben and Shimon descend, Reuben and Shimon ascend",
"I will surely bring you up also",
the second ascent
(after the first ascent at the Exodus from Egypt)
in the true and complete redemption,
and as it is written "Until Your people pass over, O Lord
(the first ascent)
until this people pass over whom You have acquired"
(the second ascent in the future redemption),
when then the Most High will acquire in perfection "Israel",
"this people whom You have acquired",
and also acquire the others of the "five acquisitions" that "the Holy One, blessed be He, acquired in His world",
"Acquirer of heaven and earth" etc.,
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Messiah,
speedily in our days, literally.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to recite a final blessing,
will certainly recite a final blessing.
Regarding the proposal to increase in joy –
since the exile is still present,
the proposal stands in its strength. And through that which one accepts the resolutions in this matter on the day of Shabbat,
it will add in this with greater emphasis and greater strength,
and through this one will have success in all matters. Until the main, inner, and primary success –
the true and complete redemption,
"now".
