English translation 1
The farbrengen on Motza'ei "Zos Chanukah" is, seemingly, not in the usual manner.
The farbrengen on Motza'ei "Zos Chanukah" is, seemingly, not in the usual manner.
But we have already become accustomed to unusual matters,
and may it be that there should be many unusual matters in good things and matters of joy.
And in particular –
a farbrengen that is connected with "Achdus Yisrael",
where we gather together in the same house,
and especially that this is not merely a "house",
but a "Beis HaKnesses and Beis HaMidrash",
a "place where they magnify Torah" and "a place where they magnify prayer"<sup>1</sup>;
א "מקום שמגדלין בו תורה" ו"מקום שמגדלין בו תפלה" 1;
and in this itself –
a Beis HaKnesses and Beis HaMidrash of the "Nasi Yisrael" of our generation,
His Holy Honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
where he learned and prayed and was occupied with the dissemination of Judaism in general and the dissemination of the wellsprings in particular,
and in a manner that the fruits and the fruits of fruits of his activities are seen now,
both in this Beis HaKnesses and Beis HaMidrash,
and in all corners of the earth.
From all this it is understood,
that it is a desirable thing,
and more than merely "desirable",
when one makes such a farbrengen,
even though this is an unusual thing.
And on the contrary –
may it be that many good things should come,
especially good things for the many,
even in an unusual manner,
until all undesirable things will completely disappear
(which are unusual in the opposite aspect).
And it is known the saying2
(which is brought in several places in Chassidus3,
and its foundation is in the Tanya4),
that even "a little light dispels much darkness",
it is certainly understood a fortiori regarding a multitude of light,
and not merely "light",
but such light that kindles another light in another place,
"candles to illuminate",
that one kindles the candles of Jews,
"the candle of Hashem is the soul of man"4,
that they should shine in their place.
And it is known the example and parable that Chassidim say regarding the Baal Shem Tov5,
that he found many "candles",
but the candles were not lit,
did not shine,
and he "lit the candles",
that they should be illuminating candles,
and furthermore –
such candles that can kindle other candles,
"one kindles a candle from another candle"5,
and so it continues until the end of all generations.
And the manner in which this is drawn down until the end of all generations is precisely as in the parable:
Just as in the parable of "one kindles a candle from another candle",
nothing is lacking in the kindling candle6,
and there need be no exertion on the part of the kindling candle,
and there is no change in its own fire
(as it is with the influence of the rav to the student,
that this is "shefa" (not "ohr"),
consequently, it takes from the time of the "rav" and the effort and the clothing of the intellect of the rav in a parable according to the vessel (and according to the understanding) of the recipient)
7 rather, it only requires the closeness of the kindling candle as it is to the candle that needs to be kindled,
this itself makes the other candle a "candle to illuminate",
so too in the allegory –
that the activity of the dissemination of the wellsprings outward as it was initiated by the Baal Shem Tov etc. is in such a manner that it is drawn by itself
(without any change or exertion etc.)
until the end of all generations.
And as is simply seen in this Beis HaKnesses and Beis HaMidrash,
and in the building in general –
that this is a building from which Judaism and wellsprings have been disseminated
(as above),
in a manner of "candles to illuminate",
and in such a manner that the "candles" kindled additional candles,
fruits and fruits of fruits,
until the fruits of fruits also brought forth fruits,
and so on ad infinitum,
and in common parlance "until the end of the world",
as the language of the Talmud8,
which according to the explanation of Chassidus8 that "olam" is from the term helem and hester (concealment and hiding),
it follows that "end of the world" means the end of "concealment and hiding".
In addition to this, there is another reason for the farbrengen not in the usual manner:
In continuation of the tumult and commotion9 that on Chanukah one should increase in joy in connection with Judaism and Torah and mitzvos –
it is certainly understood,
that when is a matter of addition and increase and tumult noticeable –
specifically when one does an unusual thing!
If it is a usual thing –
then it is like "the daily offerings in their order"10,
there is no aspect of addition and increase seen in it
("musafim");
("מוספים");
when it is an unusual thing –
then one sees that this is not "the daily offerings",
consequently, there must be a special reason for it –
this certainly brings about a second thing,
a movement of joy etc.
Why, whether he understands the reason for this unusual thing or not –
it is certain that seeing an unusual thing has an effect on him,
that he should also increase in good things.
And certainly, all the more so:
If regarding undesirable matters one must, according to Torah, be careful that the conduct of a Jew be such that the other should not learn from it11
(for example,
(ע"ד,
"before a blind person"12 etc.) –
then all the more so in a "good measure" which is "abundant,"13
that when one sees a good thing,
it will certainly have a positive influence on the other,
i.e., that the good thing is "active,"
it affects those around it,
and they affect those around them,
for these are all matters of goodness,
matters of Torah and mitzvos and Judaism in general,
also as Judaism expresses itself in "all your ways" and in "all your deeds,"
that "in all your ways know Him"14,
and "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven."15
From all this it is understood –
that when one performs an action in matters of Judaism in an unusual manner,
its result is stronger.
And since in all matters,
even ordinary matters,
we have the principle –
"And I am the beginner"16,
that before one admonishes another,
one must show oneself that one spares no effort, time, or energy, etc.,
and certainly and all the more so in an unusual matter,
it is a sure thing that it must be "And I am the beginner."
This is an additional reason for the farbrengen in an unusual manner.
One could elaborate on this,
but "give to the wise and he will become wiser."17
Another point in this –
and this is the main point:
Now the reason is no longer relevant –
the people have already gathered,
and they have already been disturbed from their ordinary matters,
and certainly they will not want to leave now,
and it would not be appropriate to leave at all.
Consequently, it is not practically necessary to elaborate on the necessity of the matter,
since we are already in the synagogue and study hall,
and in the company of so many of the children of Israel,
and also in the "women's section" of the daughters of Israel –
this itself obligates that one be in a state of farbrengen, etc.
As is known the saying that the Nasi of our generation said in the name of the Mitteler Rebbe,18
that when two Jews meet they should speak about "supernal unity,"19
and the second saying
(which is,
apparently,
from the Nasi of our generation himself),
that when two Jews come together,
a benefit must come from this for a third Jew,
or for even more Jews.
And it is a sure thing,
that this will be fulfilled in his study hall and in his synagogue –
of the one who gave the instructions, together with the empowerment to be able to carry out the instructions,
and with a pleasant countenance,
i.e., in a manner that one need not have excessive effort,
and that success is guaranteed,
including the aforementioned matter,
that it will be drawn forth like one who lights from lamp to lamp,
a second lamp and a third lamp,
until the end of the world,
until the concealment and hiding in these matters will be nullified,
and this will nullify the concealment and hiding in the world entirely,
as the Rambam rules20,
that through one action one tips the balanced world,
both the "small world"21 and the great world,
and one brings salvation and deliverance.
In addition to all this, now is the time of "Zos Chanukah,"
which has a special aspect:
It is told in the Torah,
that when the Jews traveled in the desert,
and even during their encampments,
there was a tribe whose role was "the gatherer of all the camps,"22
i.e., a tribe that "would travel last, and whoever lost something, he would return it to him."23
And since this is a story in the Torah24, it is certainly a lesson25,
and especially a story about a general matter.
Thus, one can say,
that just as this is in "place,"
so too is it in "time"
(as explained in Chassidus26 that time and place have a connection and bond between them) –
that when a time comes that is the conclusion and seal of a certain span of time –
it has within it the quality of "the gatherer of all the camps,"
that it gathers and completes all those matters that were lacking in the days and hours prior
(in that continuum of time).
And from this it is understood regarding "Zot Chanukah,"
the day that is the conclusion and seal of the days of Chanukah,
that it is in the aspect of "gatherer of all the camps" of the days of Chanukah27.
Not only according to the opinion28 that all eight days of Chanukah are one entity,
according to which it follows that "Zot Chanukah" is the conclusion of the "one entity" of the time of the eight days of Chanukah,
but even according to the opinion that they are eight separate days,
it can be said,
that also according to this opinion there are matters in which all the days of Chanukah are one entity29.
[And as has been discussed several times,
that in truth it can be said that "they do not disagree,"
because there are matters in which the eight days of Chanukah are one entity,
and there are matters in which "each day does its own work" *29,
as was discussed at length about this29].
According to this, the unique matter of this time is understood:
Since "Zot Chanukah" is the last day of the entire period of the eight days,
it is understood,
that when one is now returning a lost object to its owner,
completing a matter that the "owner of the lost object" missed,
whether regarding himself,
since he himself could have done better than he did,
or he entirely missed it for some reason –
the completion is now,
at least until midnight,
in a manner of "gatherer of all the camps,"
meaning that this completes and fills the lack of all eight days of Chanukah.
And this includes both the general matter of Chanukah,
and several particular matters that were explicitly mentioned regarding Chanukah:
And this includes the matters of charity that one sets aside in connection with the auspicious days of Chanukah.
And since Chanukah is the conclusion and seal of the entire month of Kislev –
this
(the completion on "Zot Chanukah")
also includes the matters of charity and collections that are connected with Yud-Tes Kislev,
Yud Kislev,
Tu Kislev,
Rosh Chodesh Kislev,
the intervening days, etc.
Regarding this, the matter of "it is a mitzvah to place it at the entrance of his house on the outside"30,
which is a primary matter in Chanukah –
meaning that the content of Chanukah is to illuminate also the "outside"31 –
also in this there can now be,
on "Zot Chanukah,"
the completion for the service of the eight days of Chanukah.
And although one is not now found "outside,"
but rather in a synagogue or study hall,
as above;
כנ"ל;
nevertheless, the very resolution,
with the appropriate strength,
to do and to illuminate the "outside,"
is already sufficient as a completion for the eight days of Chanukah.
For at the time of the resolution it is in such a manner that "Hashem sees into the heart"32,
that the Almighty sees that it was accepted in such a way that it will certainly come down into actual deed,
because it is "according to the soul" and with the appropriate strength –
there is the well-known ruling in the Shulchan Aruch33 that the resolution is considered as if one has already performed the matter in actuality,
and one immediately receives the reward.
All that was said above is relevant throughout the entire period of "Zot Chanukah,"
even at the beginning of "Zot Chanukah."
But this is only after the seven days of Chanukah,
yet there remain several hours in the eighth day of the days of Chanukah,
and who knows if during these hours one will perform these matters with utmost perfection.
But when one is speaking now,
in the last hours of "Zot Chanukah,"
then one also guarantees the last of the time, after which there is no later time
(similar to in place –
the lowest, below which there is nothing lower).
And simply:
First of all –
regarding charity,
in which one does not need to have great contemplation whether one gave for the collections or not...
It is a clear and simple matter:
He remembers whether he gave and whether he gave according to his ability,
according to his means,
or he could have given more...
But this is also connected with the spiritual matters in this
(or the spirituality of the giving),
in which one must already have contemplation,
whether at the time he gave, he had a "pleasant countenance"34 with all the perfection of that time,
or not;
אדער ניט;
and in what manner one can complete this.
And if the contemplation will extend beyond midnight –
then if only something will come of it in actual deed,
a completion in matters of good and holiness and Judaism –
then blessed be he! And even if it will extend beyond the day after "Zot Chanukah",
or even in the days thereafter –
but the main thing is that there should be a result and action,
for the action is the main thing35.
For this also includes the general matters about which was explicitly spoken on Chanukah36 –
regarding elderly men and elderly women,
regarding "the hosts of Hashem",
regarding the ages in between and so forth;
בנוגע די גילים שבינתיים וכיו"ב;
And also –
the matter of the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
by printing the Tanya in places where it has not yet been printed,
the dissemination of the writings that have not yet been printed<sup>37</sup>;
הפצת הכתבים שלא נדפסו לע"ע 37;
And also –
regarding the establishment of Chabad Houses38,
in the places where for some strange reason they are not yet present,
and where they are present and they can be with greater expansion –
let this be with greater expansion.
For in this matter there can always be an addition –
for as much as it appears that there is already a state of "expansion",
this is only what appears to a limited person,
therefore he must ask another –
perhaps this is not at all a true expansion,
but only an expansion relative to his standing and situation at that moment etc.,
unlike how the other sees it,
he sees that there can be expansion in a much greater manner,
and especially since the other does not have the "bribe" of sparing himself trouble,
or using the time for another matter of Torah and His commandments that does not override this matter;
אדער פארנוצן די צייט אויף א צווייטן ענין של תורה ומצוותי' וואס איז ניט דוחה אט דעם ענין;
therefore one must ask another,
perhaps he should immediately adopt the resolution to expand,
and a true expansion according to all opinions,
and especially there where the time and place demand it.
Among the matters that must be completed from the days of Chanukah –
there is a matter of a "difficulty",
which certainly must be completed,
for a difficulty is an undesirable thing,
and especially a difficulty that is connected with understanding and comprehension in the study of Torah,
and particularly –
a difficulty that is connected with a "child of five for Scripture".
For a difficulty by a "child of five for Scripture" is more damaging than by an older one:
An older one has already become accustomed,
that there are things in the world that he does not understand,
and this does not confuse him,
and all the more so a difficulty in the Torah of Hashem,
it is not at all surprising to him that he does not understand it;
איז ביי אים כלל קיין פלא ניט וואס ער פארשטייט עס ניט;
but when the child of five for Scripture learns with his teacher,
and the teacher remains with a difficulty –
it affects his faith in the teacher.
For according to the Shulchan Aruch the child must look to the teacher,
for by him he can find all matters in their perfection. Only he must be a diligent student,
to listen to what the teacher tells him,
and he must not be shy<sup>39</sup>;
און דארף ניט זיין קיין ביישן 39;
if he has a question or a difficulty –
he must ask it,
and it is a certain thing,
that since this is his teacher,
the teacher will answer him all difficulties.
Therefore,
when he sees that the teacher remained with a difficulty and does not give him an answer,
and a period of time passes –
it affects his connection and his faith in the teacher,
this affects the bond and devotion of a student to his teacher,
which according to the words of the Mishnah must be "the awe of your teacher like the awe of Heaven"40. And there is much to elaborate on all this.
Therefore we will begin by continuing in the commentary of Rashi that was spoken about in the previous farbrengen41,
in connection with "Zerach"42,
regarding which several questions were added,
and there was no time to answer them,
and it was also hoped that "give to the wise and he will become wiser"17,
that they would answer it themselves.
For part of the questions have already been answered by my having looked in the record of what was spoken about several years ago43,
so those who do not have the record –
they can seek the record,
and if the difficulty bothers them,
they will find there the answer to the questions.
There are, however, several questions that were not answered then –
and we will now address them.
Rashi44 focuses on the fact that in connection with the birth of Zerach the expression "hand" appears four times,
and writes: "Four hands are written here,
corresponding to the four trespasses that Achan, who descended from him, committed,
and some say corresponding to the four items that he took, etc."
Many questions were asked about this in the previous farbrengens –
and the answers to several of them are understood from the aforementioned list.
Among the questions that remain –
there is, however, a "major difficulty":
According to Rashi's commentary, it follows
that since Zerach had a great-great-grandson who was improper,
not as desired –
therefore, already at the time of Zerach's birth,
hundreds of years before that,
the Torah alludes to this.
But seemingly:
The Torah tells about the birth of many people before Zerach's birth and after Zerach's birth –
and regarding them, the Torah does not mention any special sign or change at the time of their birth.
According to this, one might think –
that only by Zerach was there such a great-great-grandson,
who behaved in an undesirable manner,
whereas all the others had all their descendants until the end of all generations as desired!
This is something that cannot be said,
because generally "the Torah speaks of the majority"45,
and moreover –
there are many that we know,
and it is told in the Torah itself,
that their descendants did undesirable things?
Seemingly, this is a simple question –
and we do not find that Rashi addresses it.
And as has been said several times,
one must say that the matter is understood by itself to the five-year-old studying Scripture,
or that Rashi addressed it in his commentary.
The explanation of this is –
simply:
When the five-year-old studying Scripture sees
that there is a grandfather who had a grandson, etc., who behaved in an undesirable manner –
he understands on his own
that one cannot, for every small thing that the grandson did,
allude to it at the time of the birth of his grandfather, etc.
Rather, this is told –
specifically when the undesirable matter that the grandson did is in an exceptional manner.
And as was the case with Achan,
that his deed was an undesirable deed in a particularly exceptional way.
And although Rashi does not explicitly relate the details of the matter of Achan –
since, however, he says that it was Achan,
and that he trespassed four times or with four items,
it is understood
that Rashi intends to "tell the teacher",
that if the five-year-old studying Scripture asks him for details,
he should tell him the details.
[Rashi's purpose is not to copy all the details of the matters in Tanach from which he brings proofs from verses;
[ענינו של רש"י איז ניט צו מעתיק זיין אלע פרטי הענינים אין תנ"ך פון וועלכע ער ברענגט ראיות פון פסוקים;
by indicating
about what kind of matter or which person he is speaking –
he relies that one can look up the details on one's own,
and does not copy the details that are not necessary to know for the simple meaning of the verses.]
Consequently, the five-year-old studying Scripture understands –
that in the matter of Achan there was an exceptional case,
therefore this case is distinguished from all other cases.
In what way was the matter of Achan actually distinguished from other undesirable deeds, simply?
This too is simple:
The matter of Achan was a matter that affected all Jews46.
Consequently, it is also understood why the Torah alludes specifically to this matter at the birth of Achan's great-grandfather:
Since here it concerns a deed that affected all of Israel,
and the Torah is a narrative for all of Israel,
"an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob"47,
one Torah for all of them,
"for the small and the great"48 –
the Torah must mention this undesirable deed;
דארף תורה דערמאנען וועגן דעם מעשה בלתי רצוי;
but if the grandson did an undesirable matter that affected only him or his family or tribe, etc.
(but not the entirety of Israel) –
there is no place for the Torah to mention it.
Therefore, we find that the allusion to the deed of a descendant is stated only by Zerach.
And regarding this by Yaakov –
it says 49 "Let my soul not enter their secret; with their assembly let my honor not be united,"
because of the incident of Korach,
since the incident of Korach was also a matter that pertained to all of Israel.
However, it still remains not understood:
We find in the narratives of the Torah,
and even more so in the Prophets and Writings
(which the five-year-old student of Scripture will learn later),
that there were kings of Yehudah or kings of Yisrael who did undesirable things that affected all of Israel –
and nevertheless we do not find that regarding their grandfathers and the like it is mentioned that their great-grandchildren would do undesirable deeds that pertain to all of Israel?
For example:
We find that "Yeravam ben Nevat" caused Jews to sin with the golden calves 50,
which was a matter that pertained to all of Israel,
even the Jews in the Land of Israel,
and as our Sages 51 say that Yeravam "sinned and caused the many to sin,"
all of the ten tribes who are the majority of Israel,
to the extent that this had an influence even regarding Yehudah and Binyamin who lived in Yehudah
(not in Yisrael).
Nevertheless –
we do not find at the time of the birth of Efrayim,
that the Torah
(the Written Torah)
should hint that from him would come Yeravam ben Nevat?
[And this is regarding the tribe of Dan –
that although in the territory of the tribe of Dan a calf was set up 52 (and as Rashi 53 brings regarding this what it says by Avraham 54 "and he pursued until Dan" –
"he saw that his descendants were destined to set up a calf there"),
nevertheless we do not find that the Torah (the Written Torah) gives any special sign at the time of the birth of Dan].
So the answer to the question is also so simple,
that Rashi does not even need to mention it.
With an introduction:
The five-year-old student of Scripture can indeed ask that it is not fair:
When someone has two great-great-grandchildren,
one of whom did an undesirable thing for all of Israel,
and the second did a good thing for all of Israel –
it is not fair and not proper to say,
that the Torah should hint by the grandfather only about the grandchild who did an undesirable thing and not about the grandchild who did a good thing!
It is understood,
that when one does not mention the good side,
that he had a grandchild who did a good thing –
there is no place to mention the grandchild who did an undesirable thing.
When, however, there is such a one,
that among his great-great-grandchildren there were only those who did a matter that would influence all of Israel in the undesirable direction,
as opposed to the good side,
that although there were not only intermediate ones and those below them but also righteous ones,
but the righteous ones did not influence all of Israel through their deeds –
then there is a place to single him out,
and mention at the time of his birth about the grandchild who will do an undesirable thing.
And regarding our matter:
Among Zerach's grandchildren there were certainly righteous and intermediate ones,
and especially since Rashi 55 brings that both Zerach and Peretz were "both righteous" 56,
and in the natural way a righteous person gives birth to a righteous person 57 –
nevertheless among his descendants there was not such a good deed that would rectify and protect all twelve tribes or the majority of the tribes,
there was only Achan who did an undesirable deed that affected all of Israel,
and therefore it is mentioned at the time of his birth.
From where, however, does Rashi know this very thing,
that by Zerach there was not a single great-great-grandchild who did a good thing for all of Israel?!
One could say,
that Rashi learns this from the matter itself:
If there had been such a great-great-grandchild –
the Torah would have mentioned him,
or mentioned neither;
אדער ביידן ניט דערמאנט;
since it mentions only the great-grandchild,
this itself is a proof that there was no other great-grandchild that needed to be mentioned.
And in this way all the aforementioned precise points are answered,
along with additional precise points that are connected to this.
There is another matter that will be completed now in this time which is "the gatherer of all the camps" –
and this is the completion of the conclusion of the entire Talmud that was made at the farbrengen of Yud-Tes Kislev58.
This will also add flavor to the farbrengen:
Just as there are still those who cry out "the opposite is evident",
who suddenly gather together and make a celebration etc.,
"what does this do for joy"59
(which does not indicate any excess wisdom –
when one asks such questions) –
they will make a "conclusion",
for the law is60 that one makes a feast for the completion of the Torah...
But so that the people should not be frightened that they will "Heaven forbid" take from them further who knows how many hours,
and they will have to trouble themselves etc. –
they will review a conclusion of the Rebbe Maharash.
Since with him it was indeed "from the outset, in a transcending manner"61 in all his matters,
all the more so in his Torah matters,
it is a sure thing,
that at the time they will review his Torah discourse –
it will be "from the outset, in a transcending manner",
and it will be received with a pleasant countenance,
and especially since they will review only points from that conclusion.
And as discussed above, it comes as a completion to the conclusion of the entire Talmud of Yud-Tes Kislev:
The Alter Rebbe writes in his Iggeres HaKodesh62 regarding the conclusion of the entire Talmud each and every year,
and in continuation of this, a conclusion of the entire Talmud is made on Yud-Tes Kislev.
But in the conclusion of the entire Talmud there are several levels63:
Simply, it means the conclusion of the entire Talmud in the Gemara,
as is the custom in many places,
that on Yud-Tes Kislev a conclusion is made on the last Gemara
(Niddah).
And correspondingly, on Yud-Tes Kislev they made the conclusion of the entire Talmud in the Gemara,
which ends with the Baraisa "Do not read 'halichos' (ways) but 'halachos' (laws)",
and they connected the conclusion of the entire Talmud with its beginning –
with the first Mishnah in Berachos.
There is, however, another level in the conclusion of the entire Talmud,
in a broader
(or deeper)
manner,
in which one also includes the tractates that have no Gemara
(in their place)
[consequently, one learns the commentaries on the Mishnah from the Gemara in the other tractates,
or from the commentators on the Mishnah] –
then one makes a conclusion on Tractate Ukatzin
(the conclusion of Order Taharos,
the last order of the orders of the Mishnah),
and one connects the last Mishnah in Tractate Ukatzin,
with the
(same)
first Mishnah of Tractate Berachos.
Therefore now is the appropriate time to complete this matter –
by making a conclusion on Tractate Ukatzin,
and connecting it with the first Mishnah in the entire Talmud.
The aforementioned conclusion of the entire Talmud is the discourse beginning "Mei'ematai korin es Shema b'arvis"64 of the Rebbe Maharash,
where he stands on the first Mishnah of the entire Talmud,
and he shows the connection of that Mishnah with the last Mishnah of Ukatzin,
until he writes "and it is found that Rabbeinu HaKadosh sealed the Mishnah in a manner similar to the opening,
and this is like a hadran etc."
(which is a phrase not common in other discourses).
This discourse has already been printed in a separate pamphlet,
consequently only points will be recited,
and whoever wishes can see the entire matter at length in the explanation in the letters of the Rav etc.
He brings there earlier that the beginning of the Mishnah is "Mei'ematai korin etc.",
and the conclusion of the Mishnah is with the verse65 "Hashem oz l'amo yitein, Hashem yevarech es amo bashalom",
and according to this he connects the beginning of the entire Talmud and the conclusion of the entire Talmud:
Regarding the beginning of the Mishnah –
"Mei'ematai korin es Shema b'arvis mish'ah shehakohanim nichnasim le'echol b'terumasan",
he brings that "the Ra'av explained
[the Bartinura]
that he did not teach it except incidentally,
and not for its own sake
[because the matter of "the kohanim enter etc." has no relevance here,
and the Rebbe Maharash explains the reason why Rabbeinu HaKadosh specifically brings this matter], that they
[the kohanim]
are the ones who bless Israel with peace, as it is said in the Priestly Blessing66 "v'yaseim lecha shalom"
[i.e., although the beginning of the Priestly Blessing is "yevarechecha"67,
the conclusion and seal is –
"v'yaseim lecha shalom"],
and it is found that Rabbeinu HaKadosh sealed the Mishnah in a manner similar to the opening,
and this is like a hadran etc."
And according to the custom then at the time of making a "hadran," one must answer some question –
he brings "what there is to still be precise:
Behold, the last Mishnah begins: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: The Holy One, blessed be He, will in the future cause each and every righteous person to inherit three hundred and ten worlds, as it is said68 "to cause those who love Me to inherit substance," and it concludes with the statement of Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta: The Holy One, blessed be He, found no vessel that holds blessing except peace, as it is said65 "Hashem will give strength to His people, Hashem will bless His people with peace." And it is brought in the books69,
why did Rabbeinu HaKadosh bring the statement of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi before the statement of Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta,
that although the Rambam70 counted Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi as a Tanna, nevertheless his disputants are many...
and also, behold Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta was old in the days of Rabbeinu HaKadosh who arranged the Mishnah,
as is evident from his words71...
rocks became high, close ones became distant, which is due to his old age, a small rock is considered like a large one and a near way is considered like a distant one
[and therefore he could not come to hear the discourse of Rabbeinu HaKadosh,
because he was extremely old],
and Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi was young in years72 in the days of Rabbi,
and why did he give precedence to him over the elder Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta?"
And he elaborates in this discourse on many and various matters in the inner dimension of the Torah, as this is connected with the revealed aspect of the Torah,
and he concludes73,
that the reason why "Rabbeinu HaKadosh, in his arrangement of the Mishnah, gave precedence to the words of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi over the words of Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta,
although Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi was young in years and Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta was old as above,
is because the words of Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta are an explanation and elucidation of the words of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi, etc.,
that how they will in the future attain three hundred and ten worlds, this is through peace, etc."
And what the rationale in this is, in a simple style, is:
When one says "the Holy One, blessed be He, will in the future cause each and every righteous person to inherit three hundred and ten worlds," a question can arise:
How will the righteous person be able to receive it?
Here it speaks about "to cause those who love Me to inherit substance, and I will fill their treasuries,"
and moreover –
"three hundred and ten worlds,"
and according to the explanation of the Rambam74 that this means "as if he gathered all the delights of this world in their entirety...
and afterwards that gathered amount is multiplied three hundred and ten times" –
so how can a righteous person contain this?
Even regarding all of Israel, the Gemara says75 "You have bestowed upon them
(abundant76)
good, they cannot withstand it";
טובה אינן יכולין לעמוד";
all the more so when it speaks about one righteous person?
So for this, the explanation is –
that "the Holy One, blessed be He, found no vessel that holds blessing except peace,"
that through "peace" one has a vessel to receive the blessing, to receive even a blessing like "three hundred and ten worlds."
And this "peace" was given to all of Israel –
"Hashem will give strength to His people, Hashem will bless His people with peace,"
for whoever gives, gives with a generous eye77.
And this is the general content of the discourse,
where he explains in the manner of "hadranim,"
both the connection of the beginning of the entire Shas and its end,
and many questions,
including the aforementioned question and others,
which are all explained according to the explanation in this discourse,
which is already printed
(as above).
From this there is also a directive in the service of each and every person:
It is spoken about,
that one should increase in the study of Torah in general,
and in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah in particular:
A Jew can ask the question:
Where will he take time to increase –
when he has already conducted himself until now according to the Shulchan Aruch?
And if he is a Chabadnik –
he has conducted himself according to what is stated at the beginning of the holy book of Tanya
[the Written Torah of Chassidus78,
of the master of the redemption of Yud-Tes Kislev and the days of Chanukah (the time of his second redemption79)],
in the first chapter and on the first page,
where one must beware not to waste every moment on the study of Torah,
and he brings there the terrifying punishment that comes for negating this matter –
so since all his time is full with the study of Torah,
where will he take time to increase in the study of Torah?!
For this, the answer is in the aforementioned Mishnah:
In the Mishnah it is stated,
that one can receive not only one world,
which is also "abundant good,"
but three hundred and ten worlds! And there is no question how a Jew can contain this –
because "Hashem will give strength to His people, Hashem will bless His people with peace,"
and peace is a vessel that holds blessing.
And accordingly, it is understood regarding our matter:
When he has a claim of how will he be able to receive an increase in the study of Torah –
the answer is:
This is not your concern! You be determined to do good things;
דאס איז ניט דיין דאגה! דו זיי מחליט טאן ענינים טובים;
where will you take time and strength, etc. –
"Hashem will give strength to His people, Hashem will bless His people with peace"!
It still remains, however, not understood:
How does one explain this,
and especially to a "master of the revealed aspect"?
It is indeed stated thus in the discourse,
and it is a "hadran",
and it is connected to an explicit Mishnah –
but one must explain this,
how this is revealed in the Torah –
how can it be that he can add even more in the study of Torah?
And especially since until now he was filled with the study of Torah,
in a manner of toil,
and as is known80 that "If you have not toiled and found –
do not believe",
but specifically "If you have toiled and found, believe",
and the toil must be with utmost intensity,
until he will sweat from toil in the study of Torah.
[And as it is stated in the writings of the Arizal81 regarding the Arizal himself –
"When he would...
read a halachah [the revealed aspect of Torah] in the study hall among the friends, he would ask with force until he became very weary and sweated a great sweat [which means physical sweat –
as is applicable to physicality regarding the Arizal] and I asked him [his disciple Rabbi Chaim Vital asked him] why he did so,
and he answered me that the engagement in halachah is to break the kelipah, which is the secret of the difficulty...
this requires great exertion" [which is why one must labor with the body,
until the body sweats].
If this is said about the Arizal,
whose essence is indeed "Eitz Chayim"82,
the innermost aspect of Torah82,
and nevertheless he needed to nullify the difficulties that come from the kelipah etc.,
all the more so is this regarding those who are below his level].
So how can one demand of him that he add in the study of Torah?
The Baal HaGeulah answers this in his book "Torah Or"
[and as has been discussed several times, the explanation of the phrase "Torah Or",
that "Torah" is from the term hora'ah (teaching)83,
and "Torah Or" means that this is a teaching given in a luminous and clear manner84]:
On the first page of the book "Torah Or"85 it is brought down,
that "By means of one who rectifies his deeds...
in physical actions in the aspect of 'legs' as he says later,
'and their totality is charity,
and about this it is said86 and charity exalts a nation') his mind and heart become clear a thousand times as much",
and the Tzemach Tzedek explains in a gloss on that discourse87,
"And one could say that our Sages, of blessed memory, said in the Midrash Rabbah88 'A thousand enter to study Scripture, a hundred emerge to study Mishnah,
a hundred enter to study Mishnah, ten emerge to study Talmud,
from the ten of Talmud, one emerges to teach (hora'ah)'",
and he elaborates,
that this means "his mind and heart become clear a thousand times as much",
that his study is in such a manner that he "emerges to teach (hora'ah)",
it comes out,
that this is not an expression of exaggeration,
but rather it means literally,
that through the act of charity, the study of a Jew has the power of "a thousand enter to study Scripture",
that he "emerges to teach (hora'ah)".
It thus comes out –
that through the matter of charity in its perfection,
and as mentioned earlier,
and clamored and stormed,
that one should complete all matters of charity,
also from the term shleimus (completeness),
according to the present situation
(even though according to the past situation it was already in its perfection) –
through this "his mind and heart become clear a thousand times as much",
so that notwithstanding that his study of Torah until now was already in perfection
(as discussed at length above),
he receives the power from Above,
that he can have in this study a thousand times as much!
According to this, the aforementioned question is answered –
because "a matter does not depart from its literal meaning":
As long as a Jew has not yet increased in charity,
there is perhaps still room for the aforementioned question:
Since you have studied Torah with diligence and devotion,
and with this you have utilized all your time,
until not even a moment remained free from the study of Torah –
how can one demand of you that there be "lafsha lah" (additional time for it)89,
that you should add,
and beyond all proportion;
און שלא בערך;
from where will you take time?
But when you increase in charity,
the Alter Rebbe tells you simply:
That which previously took you a thousand hours,
will now take you only a single hour,
you will have free999 hours!
Thus the question of where you will take time to study additional topics is nullified –
since that which until now you studied in 1000 hours,
in a manner of "toil and find",
you can now study in one hour!
And this is not merely in a way of a gift from Above –
but also in a manner of "toil and find":
The toil and exertion consists of the giving of charity,
which is a matter of "giving one's very soul",
as explained in Tanya90,
which is even greater than toil,
it is a matter of one's very soul itself!
From all this it is understood that all these considerations regarding the prior state and situation are not relevant –
because at the time a Jew adds in charity, "his mind and heart become clear a thousand times as much."
And it can be said,
that the explanation of the Alter Rebbe in Torah Or,
is the inner content of the aforementioned Mishnah statement
(according to the interpretation of the Rebbe Maharash),
that the vessel for the "three hundred and ten worlds" is "Hashem will bless His people with peace,"
the concept of peace:
The concept of "peace" is the concept of charity,
as explained in several places90.
And this is what the Mishnah says,
that when the concept of charity exists,
peace,
then a Jew is a vessel for three hundred and ten worlds.
And furthermore:
When the concept of charity exists,
and especially when it is with a pleasant countenance
(which is a primary condition in the giving of charity,
as explained in Shulchan Aruch91),
then he receives not only three hundred and ten worlds,
but a thousand times as much!
Consequently, "Hashem will give strength to His people,"
he receives "a thousand times as much,"
and consequently, "Hashem will bless His people with peace,"
that he has the vessels to receive the lights.
Heaven forbid that it is "abundant goodness" that one cannot receive,
but on the contrary,
he has the vessels to receive "abundant goodness."
And as the language of the Gemara92 regarding Rabbi Akiva,
that "he entered in peace,"
and afterwards "he departed in peace,"
and took with him all the matters of the Pardes,
of Maaseh Merkavah.
At first glance:
Since the novelty of Rabbi Akiva compared to the others was in that "he departed in peace" –
in what way is it different that specifically by him it says "he entered in peace"?
It is explained in many places the interpretation of this93:
Because he "entered in peace,"
therefore he also "departed in peace."
The question arises:
What does "entered in peace" mean? –
He was engaged in the matters of Maaseh Merkavah,
Pardes,
as the Rambam explains at length at the beginning of his work94,
that the matters of Maaseh Merkavah and Maaseh Bereishis are called Pardes etc.?
How then was the entry of Rabbi Akiva different from the entry of the others?
Rather, the explanation of this is –
that by him the entry was "in peace,"
i.e., he entered into the study of Torah with the concept of peace and charity,
and as is known,
that before the study of Torah there must be the service of prayer,
"that my prayer be near my bed"95,
and before prayer, "one gives a coin to a poor person and then prays"96,
there must be the giving of charity before prayer
(as brought also in the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch97).
This causes that "his mind and heart become clear a thousand times as much,"
consequently also the "departed in peace" is,
and his Torah with him,
and as it says in the verse98 regarding Yaakov Avinu,
"And Yaakov came complete" –
"complete in his body, complete in his property, complete in his Torah"99,
that despite the upheaval of the journey he was "complete in his Torah,"
that "his Torah" was in completeness100.
From this matter there is also a general directive for the children of Yaakov,
who are the children of Israel until the end of all generations101:
Notwithstanding that one goes on the path of exile,
and the exile draws on for a long time without end –
And as has been discussed several times,
that when a king's son is for one moment not at the table of his father the king102 –
this is a matter of "no end"! On the clock it is indeed only a "brief moment"
("In a brief moment I forsook you"103),
but from the perspective of the nature and essence of the king's son, the pain is endless;
אבער מצד דעם טבע ועצם בן המלך איז דער צער אין סוף;
and especially since also in "time" itself it extends without limits –
First and foremost, there is the promise,
that there will be "And Yaakov came complete,"
not only complete in his soul,
but also "complete in his body,"
and also "complete in his Torah,"
i.e., that the upheaval of exile does not affect the completeness of knowledge in Torah.
And this also effected further in the service of Yaakov,
that although "his anger surged upon him etc."104,
one anger and a second anger and a third anger –
ultimately there was the matter of "And Yehudah approached him"105,
the prayer of Yehudah,
"'And he approached' means nothing other than prayer"106,
which was "to him" –
"to him and not to his attributes"107
(as the Tzemach Tzedek brings108),
and which succeeded –
that there be "And Yaakov lived in the land of Egypt"109,
that while still in the exile of Egypt he was at the ultimate level of completeness and goodness as is possible in exile110.
And so it is also brought about now –
"The deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children"111.
Jews cry out, but:
"Enough of exile"! What connection do we have with exile?!
Indeed, by the will of the Creator,
but must one then use the decree of the verse and the decree of the Creator, heaven forbid –
to keep Jews in exile?!
Indeed, a descent for the sake of an ascent –
but enough of the ascents! And enough of the descents!
And especially since "all the appointed times have passed, and the matter depends only on repentance"112 –
then there is already the "And Judah approached him,"
there is no approach except prayer,
through every Jew who is called "Yehudi" after Yehudah,
for the name Yehudah is from "I will thank Hashem"113,
and also the name Yehudi is from one who denies idolatry114,
and whoever denies idolatry is as one who acknowledges the entire Torah115,
the Torah as "Your Torah"116.
Consequently, there is indeed the end of the exile,
that one dances out of exile,
and in one moment, in an instant,
and one comes "with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters"117,
together with "their silver and their gold with them"118,
"complete in his wealth",
and with "complete in his Torah",
and completeness in the fulfillment of the commandments,
which is the completeness of the Torah –
great is study that brings to action119,
in the Holy Land,
which is a "land which the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"120,
and in this itself one adds a special completeness.
And here is the place to stop for another matter:
Since Jews are compared to our father Yaakov,
their dwelling in the Land of Israel must be in the manner of "And Yaakov dwelt in the land of his father's sojournings"121:
One must not come, heaven forbid, to the nations that they should agree in the "U.N.",
that one must give away the Land of Israel to Jews –
this is "the land of his father's sojournings"!
And the claim that there was once "Canaan" there –
one says that "Canaan" is from the term merchant
(a Canaanite man122 –
a trader123),
as the Alter Rebbe brings in Torah Or124,
meaning that what was in the Land of Israel, Canaan, the intention in this is the matter of commerce,
that there should be the conquest of the land,
and moreover –
"Hashem your God will enlarge your border"125.
And on the contrary:
That which the Land of Israel was initially given to the nations of the world is in order to inform Jews about "the power of His works",
"the power126 of His works He declared to His people"!
If there were no nations of the world –
one would not have needed to declare "the power of His works",
but since there are nations of the world who come and claim "You are robbers who conquered the land of the seven nations" –
for this there is "the power of His works He declared to His people, to give them the inheritance of nations",
as Rashi brings at the beginning of his commentary on the Torah.
From this is also understood regarding the conduct in recent times –
that one thinks that one must come to the point that the nations of the world should agree to everything,
consequently one sends emissaries there,
and one promises that one will give away territories, heaven forbid,
and place Jews in danger, heaven forbid,
unthinkable for Jews and unthinkable for people –
a matter of actual danger to life!
And as one sees events every day –
how this conduct brings danger to life!
One has convinced oneself,
that when another Jew will come and say:
How is it possible? How can one allow such a thing? –
one will answer him that "it was a chance occurrence"127!
There was indeed
(heaven forbid)
a fire in a tent
(a "barrack"),
and indeed 8 soldiers were killed, heaven forbid,
and many were wounded –
but this is not a matter that has in it any lesson...
It is a "coincidental thing"...
But why did these "coincidental things" happen one after the other and after the third, etc.,
and specifically in these most recent weeks and months,
specifically when it was announced that one is going to give away "the West Bank" and "Judea and Samaria", etc., etc.?!
It must have some explanation!
But the explanation for this is this very thing:
Because one wants to give away things to the nations,
this itself arouses the terrorists to increase in acts of sabotage.
Just as the entire matter of wanting to give away territories has no place in reason –
one finds an explanation,
that in exchange for this one will receive a piece of paper!
One cannot say this openly –
so they fell upon an invention:
Why must one say that in exchange for the territories one will receive merely a piece of paper –
they say that one will receive a paper on which will be written the word "peace",
consequently it means that one gives the territories in exchange for peace...
We already know from the past what happens when one gives territories in exchange for a paper on which is written "peace":
When they received a paper at Camp David
(Camp David) –
with that content it brought a chain of troubles,
both materially and spiritually
(not to mention now):
Materially, the troubles are simple –
it ruined the economic situation of the entire country!
Because they had to give up the oil,
consequently one must buy oil,
which makes the economic situation very difficult!
The oil sources were in the possession of Israel –
they gave them to the Egyptians,
and now,
when one needs oil to work the fields –
one must go to the Egyptian,
and find him in a good mood,
when he will want to sell the oil...
Because suddenly he can become "angry" –
he recalls his "ambassador",
and does not want to speak at all!
Afterwards they send emissaries to South America –
to bring from there a barrel of oil...
When they had the oil springs in their possession,
no one dreamed –
neither in Washington,
nor in Jordan,
nor in Egypt –
that they would let them out of their hand! This is a matter that has no explanation in human intellect
(not in Divine intellect –
in the intellect of the animal soul)!
But what then? They talked themselves into it,
that they would be called a fine man,
and a fine politician, etc.,
and they would receive a "Nobel Prize" for peace!...
(Incidentally:
How does the whole matter of a "Nobel Prize" come about?
There was a non-Jew who succeeded in making matters of destruction and ruin,
not in matters of peace,
but matters of devastation that were later used in all sorts of wars,
and killed, may Hashem spare us, hundreds of thousands of people;
און גע'הרג'עט ר"ל הונדערטער טויזנטער מענטשן;
and afterwards it occurred to him,
whether he had a merit or for whatever reason –
that from part of the money he made from it, they should make a "fund" from which they would distribute "prizes" for good matters,
such as innovations in medical science or an innovation in the conduct of bringing peace and the like.
It turns out,
that the money he received for the "Nobel Prize" is money that was made by manufacturing matters of devastation –
is that a virtue!?
What value do all these things have when one knows what the "peace" brought –
it brought, may Hashem spare us, actual killing of hundreds of soldiers of the children of Israel, in actuality! And we know their names!
And they give the same excuse that "it was a chance occurrence":
Just as a terrorist passed through a certain place,
and afterwards one had to travel in a certain manner,
and he took a "hitchhiker",
a "car" passed by
(an automobile)
and he entered there,
a terrorist was sitting there,
and killed him...
In truth, this is an explanation when it happens once,
and not when it happens many times;
און ניט בשעת עס טרעפט כמה וכמה פעמים;
and furthermore, even when it happened the first time it is also completely incomprehensible:
Why was this not before the agreement of "Camp David"...
Before that agreement they trembled before an Israeli soldier,
and now the opposite situation has arisen:
One goes in Jerusalem,
in Hebron,
in Shechem,
and even in Tel Aviv,
and one is not sure if there is an Arab behind him who will, may Hashem spare us, do what he did!...
Afterwards there was another matter:
When one must answer the question "how is it possible" –
with what does one answer it?
One flees to Tunis,
hundreds of miles from there,
and one selects the Arabs who have a good relationship with Jews,
chooses a country where there are several thousand Jews,
to whom there was the best relationship –
and there one flees!...
Not to Syria,
not to Jordan,
not to Egypt –
which are indeed the open enemies,
who make no secret of it –
but whom did they choose –
specifically Tunis!
That is to say,
the "strategists" "caught on",
that if one would flee to Jordan –
they would be prepared for it there,
but if one would flee to Tunis,
it would not occur to anyone that one would do such a madness without any benefit!
They endangered all the planes;
מ'האט איינגעשטעלט אין סכנה אלע פליער;
they killed so many and so many terrorists,
so that the danger from the terrorists who are there,
is incomparably greater than the danger of the very flight there –
but the Supreme One performed a miracle,
and they came flying back whole,
but this was truly a miraculous matter!
And this is no secret,
because everyone knows all the "military secrets" that are revealed there –
therefore one knows,
in the blink of an eye,
or the next morning,
by the enemy,
as is known from several stories of several matters!
How does it come to do such a thing –
this is understood simply:
They caught on –
that just as this will make a great impression,
it will atone for the "failure"
(as they call it)
of the overall leadership:
For after every victory that the Supreme One gave to the "Israel Defense Forces" –
the politicians came,
and sold the victory for a piece of paper,
they thought that they would cover up the "failure" by flying to Tunis without any benefit!
And as mentioned above –
they sell a victory for a piece of paper,
and they "requested" that they write on the paper the word "peace";
און מ'האט "אויסגעבעטן" אז מ'זאל אנשרייבן אויפן פאפיר דעם ווארט "שלום";
afterwards they also did not want to concede that –
they requested that they write,
that they agree to meet and talk together at a "round table":
afterwards they also retracted that!
And they are not ashamed! And they continue on!
And in addition to this:
For as they go on,
as mentioned,
acts of sabotage in Hebron and in Shechem and in Ramla and in the Old City of Jerusalem –
first and foremost a method was established,
that one should always cover up,
that one should not tell that terrorists killed soldiers!
There are dozens of cases where a Jew was actually killed –
and they ordered the newspapers not to tell about it!
The Supreme One helped
(if this is called "help") –
that since there are correspondents of newspapers from outside the country there,
they reported to their newspapers about this –
and they publicized it;
און זיי האבן דאס מפרסם געווען;
therefore they had no choice,
and they had to admit that such an incident occurred,
but what then –
a terrorist did not do it;
ניט א טעראריסט האט עס געמאכט;
rather "it was a chance occurrence"!
But one cannot say,
that while dozens of cases occur in "Yehuda and Shomron",
that terrorists are not doing this –
they caught on to a very strange invention
(that is, a "political invention" unparalleled):
Jews from the USA came traveling,
who do not understand any cleverness, only they ask a simple question:
How is it possible! What happened here?
Until now the Arabs were not any smaller friends
(or were not any smaller enemies)
than before –
and suddenly one sees,
that in the "West Bank" of the Jordan,
there became incomparably more matters of sabotage,
until –
matters of actual killing of people!
So they are "wise" –
they hit upon an invention!
What is the invention? –
That this is actually a benefit for Jews...!!!
Terrorists have murdered several Jews in Judea and Samaria,
where there is
(in part of them)
a "military regime",
a military leadership,
not a civilian administration –
and there they murdered! And one knows whom they murdered and who murdered
(indeed not who is the private individual –
but which group did it) –
So when wealthy people from the USA come visiting,
and one needs to answer them something –
they tell them that there is a benefit for Jews in this!
– Has one ever heard such an invention?!
They murdered a Jew, Heaven forbid,
and "one soul" is also like a "full world"128,
all the more so when it concerns dozens of souls,
and all the more so when these are dozens of souls of military personnel,
which weakens the fear that non-Jews
(Arabs)
have of the Israel Defense Forces –
and they say that this is a benefit for Jews!
With this they explain why they do nothing about the acts of sabotage:
With what can one deter a terrorist? Not by the fact that when one catches him one "punishes" him by putting him in prison,
where they give him food and drink and lodging etc. ready-made –
which is even better than what he had when he was wallowing in his own village –
and after a short while passes,
they exchange him
(as they exchanged hundreds of terrorists for three or four or five Jews),
which they know from the outset,
because this has become a practice of "always in the usual manner".
So it is certainly that with such a practice
(of "imprisoning")
one cannot deter the terrorist...
Furthermore:
In order that the terrorist not do what he does –
he must be afraid beforehand,
that he will not succeed and they will catch him.
But how can one catch him –
when one chases after him!
In contrast, when one is occupied with other matters and the like,
there is simply a weakening in the guarding of Jews in the Land of Israel itself!
[I know that they hear this there,
and certainly there will be a commotion –
from where do I have the knowledge –
these are reports that appear in all the newspapers in the USA,
and in some of the major newspapers in the Land of Israel itself!
And truly one need not have any greater knowledge than this very incident itself,
about which they say that a benefit for Jews will come out of it...].
And as mentioned –
there are official people who speak in an official manner,
with emissaries
(delegates)
of the wealthy people who have money and to whom one must appeal that they give the money –
to say this invention,
which they are not ashamed to say –
that what they did, murdering dozens of soldiers in the "West Bank" and in "Judea and Samaria", is for the benefit of Israel!
But one must have some explanation –
so since they have a "Jewish head", they invent a rationale of "the opposite is evident":
Since in Judea and Samaria there are Arabs,
and they are even the majority,
therefore by the fact that the terrorists will conduct themselves "improperly" and will actually kill a soldier while he stands on guard with his rifle –
this will make the inhabitants of Judea and Samaria angry,
consequently they will stop supporting the terrorists!...
This is the benefit that comes out of this for Jews...
But the Arabs who live in Judea and Samaria are all
(the vast majority of them)
themselves terrorists,
as they themselves admit to this,
they are terrorists by nature.
They calculated –
so goes the explanation –
that the Arabs who live there in Judea and Samaria will conduct themselves "statesmanlike"...
What does it mean they will conduct themselves "statesmanlike"?
Not "Heaven forbid" to renounce the method that one must drive Jews out of the Land of Israel –
this, by no means, no!
Nor to renounce the method that they will harm Jews –
also no!
Only what then? At the time a soldier stands with a rifle as a representative of the government –
they will not bother with him.
And this regarding a soldier who stands on the "border guard" and the like...
But after the residents of Judea and Samaria
(the terrorists...)
saw,
that even the "honesty"
(alas that this is called by the name "honesty"),
the terrorists of the P.L.O. also did not –
they told the terrorists "with a blunt finger":
You should know,
that we are angry at you,
and therefore,
we must consider whether we will help you or not,
and whether we will give you money or not,
and whether we will assist you or not!
This is the benefit that Jews have from the acts of sabotage according to their explanation...
Because one calculates and hopes and wants to persuade someone,
that through this they will become lovers of Israel and stop harming Jews –
when in practice it was seen that they harmed Jews even after this!
That with money no one needs to approach the residents,
the Arabs who sit in Judea and Samaria –
they have money over their heads from "Saudi Arabia" and the like,
from the governments that have oil.
[For here one sees a strange thing:
Just as Jews gave away the oil that the Almighty gave them literally in their hands,
so those hold on to their oil,
and they put pressure on the entire world through the oil –
and a portion of the profits they send,
as mentioned,
to the terrorists in Judea and Samaria,
and in Jordan (in "Rabbath Benei Ammon")].
So here the question arises:
What is the benefit of this talk and this shouting about this? It is after all what was, was.
But the reason that one speaks about this –
because one sees that they are going in the same method that already caused the greatest damages in the past,
and perhaps one will prevent it in the future:
The mistake that is being made now is the same mistake that was made when the "Camp David" agreement was signed,
that through this signing an act was done that is a "crying for generations"
(may it be prevented)!
And as one sees it now in practice!
And everyone knows,
that the reason for this that the treaty was then signed,
is because there was the greatest pressure,
and one knows who was the pressurer,
and one knows upon whom pressure was applied,
that he had to regret his method regarding the security of the land with which he held for 40 years!
So despite the fact that such was his method for 40 years –
he could not withstand the pressure,
and went and signed that paper!
And in truth, Carter himself did not expect that he would ever sign it!
He had to demand it,
due to the pressure that he had upon himself from the "State Department" and the like –
but by him it was a clear thing that they would not agree to it!
And as discussed several times that so it was also after the Six-Day War:
By everyone it was a clear thing,
that after the Six-Day War they would not agree to return anything;
אז לאחרי מלחמת ששת הימים וועט מען ניט מסכים זיין מ'זאל עפעס אומקערן;
and nevertheless immediately after the victory a whole delegation went from the Land of Israel to Washington,
to announce,
that although they had "acquired" and taken all the occupied territories etc. etc. –
they were ready to give everything back,
except for the Old City of Jerusalem and other matters of this sort!
Only the miracle was –
that the gentiles did not want to take it,
they wanted to have more! Were it not for this, may Hashem forbid,
it would have already happened then...
Afterwards the same people went,
or their "students",
with the same method,
and signed the "Camp David" treaty!
And regarding this they conduct themselves with the same method also now –
and they are not ashamed and they say that the acts of sabotage in Judea and Samaria etc. are a benefit for Jews!
Clever people come traveling,
and the proof is –
they were successful in commerce –
and they are "explained" to,
that although everyone agrees that dozens of Jews were killed in Yehuda and Shomron,
this is nevertheless "a favor for Jews",
which "favor" consists of this, that the Arabs in Yehuda and Shomron became thereby angry at the P.L.O. terrorists who sit in Syria and Jordan etc. –
consequently this is an obvious favor...
Who will bring back the dozens of soldiers who were killed! And they have widows and orphans,
who walk in the street,
and they are not ashamed before them!...
And regarding this they wish to conduct themselves also in the future –
that they chase after that the other should sign a paper!
If they will make peace –
they have already lost hope;
האט מען שוין פארלארן די תקוה;
only what are they chasing after –
that they should agree that it should stand on paper that they will meet and talk among themselves!...
And later,
at the time when they had already accomplished this and received the promise about this –
the other received pressure from the Arabs,
among them also Arabs from Yehuda and Shomron –
he immediately regretted,
and said that he does not want to be a "mediator",
and they should go themselves and talk and accomplish,
and in practice they accomplished nothing.
May it be protected that one needs to mention this very thing!
Consequently it is not fitting to say about this "what was, was" –
because they conduct themselves this way,
with the same method,
until this very day,
and tomorrow,
and the day after,
and they say "I have eaten and I will eat again" etc. –
saying,
that thus conducted himself the "predecessor".
– Since you see yourself to what the "predecessor" led –
you should have at least warned that they should not go deeper into the misfortune!
What proof does he bring from the "predecessor"? Just as that one went and "fell in",
and placed all of Israel in danger,
which is as mentioned above a "weeping for generations"
(may it be prevented) –
consequently he will also do thus,
because he is not the first...
– Have you ever heard such a claim? He placed Jews in danger,
he will continue it,
because he is not the first...
Afterwards there was another horrifying matter:
There is no country in the world where one forces a person to vote against his own conscience!
Even in Communist Russia,
it was never heard that one forces a person to act thus,
saying publicly,
that although your conscience tells you to say such and such,
the party tells you not to reckon with your conscience,
and you should do and say and write and swear,
as the party commanded you
(contrary to your conscience)!
I myself was in Soviet Russia,
and woe and alas that one must bring proofs from them,
and as the language of our Sages 129 "like the corrupt among them
[among the nations]
you have acted" –
but there the order is thus:
At the time when they forced one to say or do forbidden things –
they "explained",
that thus the "conscience" must compel:
because thus it works out according to the system of "Marx",
and according to the system of "justice and righteousness",
that one must protect the poor,
and not harm the hired laborers
(you shall not oppress a hired worker 130)
and the like –
consequently one must conduct oneself according to the Communist instructions.
Here, however, they say the opposite:
If you have a conscience,
and the conscience tells you that you should say yes or say no –
you may not reckon with your conscience! Not because the conscience is false –
but because there is a party,
which is led by three-four-five men –
one must do what the leaders of the party say!
[And it is known that regarding all the other members of the party, one does not know whether this interests them at all;
[וכידוע אז בנוגע אלע איבעריקע חברים פון דער מפלגה ווייס מען ניט צי דאס אינטעריסירט זיי בכלל;
each one is occupied with his work,
with his "desk",
the department which was given over to him,
and the general matter of the conduct of the state –
they do not involve themselves in this,
because they will not be listened to anyway,
consequently there is no difference,
what they will say!].
Several leaders of the party come out,
and they say simply –
that even though it is about a rabbi's son or someone who is himself a "rabbi",
consequently he has a conscience and the conscience tells him such and such –
they tell him:
No!
One argues:
It could be at least "the honored one sit in your place"<sup>131</sup>;
עס קען זיין לכל הפחות "הכבד ושב במקומך" 131;
he will sit at home and not come to the vote –
they say further:
No! You have a party,
and the party makes you master over itself! Not master over your body,
but master over your soul! The soul has a conscience and does not agree,
so let him at least sit at home –
they say:
No!
That this is a "dictatorship" unparalleled!
Even in Soviet Russia there is no such thing!
In practice
(as mentioned above)
it is alas that one can compare them to that;
איז אָך-און-וויי אז מ'קען זיי פארגלייכן דערצו;
but openly,
officially,
the "leader"
(ruler)
of the "Kremlin" does not presume to tell someone,
even a Communist,
or a Democrat etc.,
that he should vote against his conscience!
He only tells him,
that if he wants to conduct himself according to his conscience –
they will put him in "Chad Gadya",
in prison,
or in Siberia –
but he can say what his conscience tells him.
Here, however, they say –
No! You must go vote! And how will you vote? It makes no difference what your soul tells you –
you must ask the secretary of your party,
who will receive the instruction that one must come on such and such a day and at such and such an hour,
and vote in such and such a manner!
And this is called "democracy"! There has never been such a "dictatorship" in the entire world!
And here one sees how all these matters are connected with each other:
They give the leadership the name "democracy" even though it is the opposite,
just as they call a "piece of paper" by the name "peace",
on which not even the word "peace" is written!
And as mentioned –
on the piece of paper it only said that there would be a "meeting",
and even that was nullified...
And nevertheless, Jews came and immediately issued a declaration:
Let it be known,
that this is only from the other side;
אז דאס איז בלויז מהצד השני;
but Jews are a "wise and understanding people"132,
and "lovers of peace and pursuers of peace",
consequently they announce,
that they are always ready and prepared to speak with the other side. So when the other side will show the "great kindness",
and will agree to meet,
they agree
(without any conditions of what and when),
wherever they will propose to meet and they will let them talk about whatever they want...
Afterwards,
when a report arrives that in the Old City of Jerusalem a Jew was stabbed –
they call in the newspapers,
and tell them,
that under no circumstances should they write about it,
because this will "agitate Jews"...
– Who is talking about "agitation" –
it is about living people!
It is not the meaning,
that because someone was killed,
they have "fulfilled",
and they go off to sleep or take a walk;
און מ'גייט אַוועק שלאפן אָדער שפאצירן;
on the contrary –
because he killed and he walks around free
(released to freedom) –
this gives encouragement for him to continue doing so with greater intensity and greater strength!
And this is not a hypothesis,
but this is what happened in practice!
And nevertheless, they continue with the same method!
Seemingly, however, the question arises:
What is the benefit of shouting about this?!
And on the contrary:
This will anger them,
consequently they will not give on the matters that are connected to the one who shouts against them?
There are two answers in the matter:
First of all –
because this is connected with actual bloodshed,
there is the principle "Do not stand by the blood of your fellow"133!
And as for the fact that one is silent and a second is silent and a third is silent –
let them be asked.
And secondly –
when a matter is truly pertinent,
one does not consider whether the shouting will help or not,
because when it hurts and it is pertinent –
one shouts!
And furthermore, and this is the main point:
It is stated regarding Yosef134 that he was a "master of dreams." And since "all of Israel are called by the name Yosef,"135
as it is written136 "He leads like the flock of Yosef"
(which means all of Israel, as it is written137 "He leads like the flock of Your people") –
it is therefore understood that every Jew by nature is a "master of dreams"...
This gives the strength to endure the pain and suffering of the exile!
If a Jew were not a "master of dreams,"
one would not have the strength to endure the pain and suffering!
And primarily –
the suffering of "your destroyers and those who laid you waste go out from you,"138
the troubles one has from Jews, G-d forbid!
Since one is a "master of dreams,"
a grandchild of Yosef,
one reminds oneself,
that Yosef indeed dreamed and dreamed,
and sat in prison –
but in the end it became "and without you139 no man shall lift his hand or his foot, etc."...
I do not calculate that when I shout, no one will lift a hand or foot until they receive permission from me...
I do not dream to such an extent either...
But perhaps this will accomplish something –
that they will at least increase the actual guard in the Old City of Jerusalem,
in Shechem,
in Chevron,
and even in Tel Aviv.
And one should not delude oneself that one can explain away everything as a "chance occurrence,"
and the foolish world will accept it –
because even if one pretends not to understand,
the Arabs themselves publicize,
that they are the ones who murdered, G-d forbid, so-and-so son of so-and-so,
and harmed so-and-so daughter of so-and-so, etc.,
and they add that this is an entire organization,
and their hand is still outstretched, G-d forbid.
And the claim that they want to convince the world that this is for the sake of true peace –
they will not convince anyone, because the world is not foolish!
They think –
that the world is not affected by it anyway,
therefore they will be able to convince them to some extent,
and conduct themselves in a manner of "neglect" in economics, in politics, and in education,
and in all matters.
This too is a frightening matter:
There has never been such wild education as there is now in Eretz Yisrael!
One may not speak disparagingly of Israel – but
(as mentioned above)
it is a "dream" that perhaps it will accomplish something,
at least partially.
It is enough to see how education is in the USA –
there the situation is even worse:
In the USA there are such schools,
upon which the government does not pressure,
because they do not need to approach the government;
ווייל זיי דארפן ניט אנקומען צו דער ממשלה;
but in Eretz Yisrael everyone must approach the government,
and consequently it leads to a frightening situation in education.
And as discussed above regarding the conduct of the government:
The government says clear things,
that even if your conscience tells you a certain way,
you must hold onto your conscience when you are in your "bedroom";
דארפסטו זיך האלטן ביים מצפון בשעת דו ביסט אין דיין "שלאף-צימער";
but when you go out into the street –
you must ask what the party says!
It makes absolutely no difference who your father was,
and what kind of education you received,
and not the education your brother had or what you give your son –
but specifically what the party says!
And they even bring a proof from themselves:
He himself had an education that was connected with a good Jew and with a rabbi,
and was connected with a yeshiva and cheder and Talmud Torah,
and grew up as a religious Jew –
but because the party got involved,
he goes against his conscience,
and does so openly!
And they even make from this a matter of glory and splendor:
Just as "He did not create it to be empty –
He formed it to be inhabited"140,
therefore not everyone can take the law into his own hands,
so when a law must be implemented throughout the entire country –
one relies on the experts and those knowledgeable in this,
and those who have been chosen for this –
therefore, go to sleep with your conscience,
you will wake up tomorrow morning,
you will open the newspaper of the party,
you will see what the party secretary and the three or four people who lead the party write,
and as they have decided, so you should vote openly,
and afterwards send the news throughout the entire world,
that there was a majority of the people's representatives on the proposal!...
Some of them are Communists;
א טייל פון זיי זיינען קאָמוניסטן;
some of them are Christians;
א טייל פון זיי זיינען נוצרים;
some of them are Arabs,
and some of them are,
be it differentiated,
Jews –
but he will not differentiate between one and another,
because it is contrary to democracy...
– Who is talking about democracy? Does anyone take into account the opinion of the majority? Does anyone ask anyone what he thinks about the giving away of the oil,
or about the Jews who were expelled from "Yamit",
or about the Jews whom they are seeking to expel from the Old City of Jerusalem!
Until now they have indeed not expelled –
but they do not allow settling there!
And this –
while the Arabs multiply with natural birth,
and there comes an increase of Arabs in the Old City of Jerusalem!
It is a matter for the Almighty,
and one may not harm a child of non-Jews,
just as one may not harm a child of Israel,
and on the contrary –
regarding "abortion"
(abortions)
the children of Noah are commanded even regarding fetuses more than a Jewish daughter141.
So until now the "expulsion from the Old City of Jerusalem" consists of not allowing,
settling there,
and likewise in Hebron and in Shechem,
and they clothe this in "nice words",
that one must not incite passions,
and one must take into account public opinion,
and since in Jerusalem there are 65,
000 Arabs, "according to their word shall every matter be" –
and afterwards this can lead etc.
And this is not the place to elaborate on a matter that is not for the good of Israel.
But today we stand at the conclusion and seal of Chanukah –
in this there is a lesson from Chanukah:
During eight consecutive days on Chanukah we said "Al Hanissim",
that although we are indeed "weak" physically and "few" physically,
and there is the "wicked kingdom of Greece",
one should know that we defeated them!
So too in our matter –
that there is a "wicked kingdom of Greece",
or the kingdom in Syria or in Rabbat Bnei Ammon,
or in Saudi Arabia etc.,
and their hand is stretched out to lead the "people who dwell in Zion",
and they seek "Hellenists".
One approaches a Jew who is naturally religious,
religious by education,
born through a blessing from a good Jew,
and boasts about it,
and in his private life there are many good matters,
and when it is not connected to the party –
he does a favor to a religious Jew because that Jew is religious,
and he has a feeling for a Jew in general,
especially in the Holy Land,
and especially since he has seen so many open miracles in his private life –
and the greatest miracle is,
that in the natural order he was given the intelligence for what happens with hundreds of thousands of Jews,
in matters of actual life-threatening danger –
And they are not ashamed to issue an announcement that one should vote against conscience! And if not –
they throw that person out of the party,
out of his livelihood,
out of all the positions he held,
and afterwards there will be persecutions,
he and his wife and his household until the end of all generations,
as has already happened in past times.
For this is indeed a matter of "Hellenists" etc.
There will be the victory over the wicked kingdom of Greece with the Hellenists etc.,
as it was "in those days".
May it be His will,
even though it says in the verse142 "In the multitude of words etc." –
that at least all the words spoken shall be fulfilled,
since this is a synagogue and study hall,
and we stand at the conclusion and seal of the days of Chanukah,
may it be "to give thanks and praise to Your great Name",143
for the "open miracles",144
and open miracles before actual flesh,
and in one moment and in one instant.
Until we come to the primary miracle,
and this also –
specifically in a revealed manner,
and specifically in a manner of "I will hasten it"145 –
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach.
Since this is the time of the "gathering" of all previous times,
as mentioned above,
now is the time to complete another matter that was discussed yesterday.146
The well-known story was brought147,
that when he was imprisoned, the Alter Rebbe asked the Maggid and the Baal Shem Tov how he should conduct himself from then on regarding the revelation of the teachings of Chassidus –
and they answered him that he should continue in the dissemination of the wellsprings.
And the difficulty in this was asked,
how this is consistent according to the revealed [Torah] etc.,
and the matter was explained148 at length with the details of the questions and answers in the matter.
However, a primary matter remained that requires explanation:
It was only explained how the Alter Rebbe could ask them the question
(even though they were already in the World of Truth),
because they were revealed to him as "souls in bodies",
and why he needed to ask them the question
(and in a manner that there was a doubt whether he should do this,
and his conduct was dependent on their answer –
even though there was already such a question in the time of the Maggid,
and it had already been decided) –
because at that time a new matter had been introduced,
due to the decree of the kingdom etc.
But this does not answer the content of the matter –
because even though the question and doubt in the time of the Alter Rebbe was different than in the time of the Maggid,
nevertheless, the answer that the Alter Rebbe gave in the time of the Maggid seemingly fits in its content also in the time of the Alter Rebbe:
The incident in the time of the Maggid was149,
that a certain great one found "two leaves upon which were written his Torah teachings
[of the Maggid]
rolling in the courtyard in the wind of the day, and he was angered by this",
and the Alter Rebbe said to him about this "the well-known parable of the king's son who fell ill with a terrible illness and the doctors said there is no cure for his affliction except...
to grind precious stones and drink from that water...
and one of the wise men investigated and found that in the king's crown there is one stone unlike any other...
and that stone has the power to heal the illness of the king's son...
but in the meantime the condition of the king's son worsened so much that the doctors said that if they pour the healing water into his mouth, it is doubtful whether he will accept it, and the precious stone from the king's crown will be lost without any benefit,
and the king answered and said:
Precious is the crown of the kingdom...
and the precious stone is the diadem of the crown that crowns it,
but all this is as nothing and naught compared to the essence and selfhood of the king's son,
for whom it is worthwhile to grind the precious stone even on the chance,
lest perhaps a single drop reach the mouth of the king's son and he be healed from his illness".
So too in the allegory,
that there must be the dissemination of the "wellsprings",
the precious stone of the king's crown,
"lest perhaps a single drop reach the mouth of the king's son",
consequently the parable nullifies the anger and the accusation against the Maggid.
It is seemingly not understood:
True indeed,
that in the time of the Alter Rebbe there was a change in the manner of the accusation –
it was not an accusation about his leadership
(as with the Maggid),
rather it was a decree of the kingdom,
consequently there is a question whether one must give up one's life etc. –
but the content of the parable as a nullification of the accusation remains in full force,
and on the contrary:
in the time after the Maggid, the condition of the "king's son" certainly did not improve,
and in the well-known phrase150 "the generation is worthy –
it is ruined",
is it not certainly that "it is worthwhile to grind the precious stone...
lest perhaps a single drop reach the mouth of the king's son"?!
Indeed, truly, from the aspect of the royal decree there is an additional question
(which did not exist in the time of the Maggid)
whether this is a matter for which one must sacrifice oneself
(since it is not among the three transgressions for which one must "be killed and not transgress"151) –
but from the aspect of the aforementioned parable it is understood that here it is not relevant how the conduct of "so-and-so" should be,
but rather that it is a situation that can only be rectified by placing the drop of the stone from the king's crown into "the mouth of the king's son"?
This is not merely an additional question from the aspect of the inner dimension of the matter –
rather it is a question regarding the essence of the matter.
Thus it can be said,
that the explanation of this is hinted at in the aforementioned parable of the Alter Rebbe,
and with an introduction:
At first glance it is not understood how a matter of accusation from above regarding the dissemination of the wellsprings by the Alter Rebbe came about at all:
In the time of the Maggid there was already, as mentioned, the accusation which was nullified through the aforementioned parable,
consequently the Maggid continued in his leadership,
and afterwards there were his successors,
his disciples,
and among them –
the Alter Rebbe.
Now the Maggid passed away in the year 5533 –
and afterwards, only in the year 5559,
more than 20 years later,
did the accusation occur.
That is, that during all the intervening time there was no accusation,
and only after this did an accusation arise.
Now the simple reason for why the accusation was renewed at that time is,
as the language of the story152 states:
"The accusation against you has strengthened because you say many discourses of Chassidus and in a revealed manner, etc."
It is not understood:
What was renewed over the course of the years? –
The matter of saying discourses of Chassidus already existed before this in the time of the Maggid,
and likewise throughout all the intervening years by the Alter Rebbe himself?
One must say,
that during this time there was added a novelty and change in the manner of saying Chassidus –
and it was regarding this that the accusation arose.
According to this it is also understood,
why the verdict in the Maggid's lifetime was not sufficient regarding the time of the Alter Rebbe,
because the accusation then was due to a novelty and change in the manner of saying Chassidus.
The rationale for this:
When one compares the manner of saying Chassidus by the Alter Rebbe,
in the time close to the arrest,
to the saying of Chassidus of the Maggid,
and also to the saying of Chassidus of the Alter Rebbe himself before this –
one immediately sees the simple difference between them:
Regarding the saying of Chassidus by the Maggid,
we have his discourses which are printed in his two books,
"Likkutei Amarim"
(by the Maggid)
and "Or Torah";
און "אור תורה";
likewise we see the discourses of the Maggid's disciples in their books;
עד"ז זעט מען די מאמרים פון תלמידי המגיד בספריהם;
afterwards we have the discourses of the Alter Rebbe himself from the early years of his leadership.
Afterwards there are the discourses that the Alter Rebbe said later,
in the years close to 5559,
and particularly as this was published in the Tanya153
(which is the "Written Torah" of Chassidus78),
which was printed in the year 5557,
two years before 5559,
which book was compiled from discourses that the Alter Rebbe said orally154
(which is one of the reasons for the name "Likkutei Amarim"155),
which were afterwards compiled through editing and changes and so forth156
(the details of which are known).
Thus when one compares the saying of Chassidus in the time before the arrest with the Chassidus of the time before this –
one immediately sees,
that in the later discourses which were said close to the arrest –
there is a fundamental change157 relative to the discourses of the Maggid and his disciples,
and even relative to the discourses of the Alter Rebbe himself from the early years of his leadership –
which change is,
that at that time the Chassidus became in the manner of Chabad, etc.:
The points that stand in the manner of a point in the discourses of the Baal Shem Tov and the Maggid and the Alter Rebbe in his early years
(And it is known that in his early years the Alter Rebbe delivered the discourses in the most concise manner158 –
at least in relation to the matters in Tanya) –
were later brought forth in a manner of expansion and understanding and comprehension,
wisdom, understanding, and knowledge,
and in the language of the Tikkunei Zohar159 –
"they will be sustained from Me,"
and as explained in Tanya160,
that first there is the matter of "wisdom,"
then one contemplates
(understanding),
and then there is the matter of knowledge,
in a manner of "a wondrous unity"161,
until "blood and flesh become like his flesh"161.
From this it is understood why the nullification of the accusation in the time of the Maggid is not related to the revelation of Chassidus by the Alter Rebbe:
The nullification of the accusation in the time of the Maggid was through the parable of the "drop" that enters the mouth of the "king's son."
What is the matter of a "drop"? It is a "point,"
not expansion!
And it is like in Torah:
One says "a word,"
or a few words –
and this revives the "king's son." Because since it speaks about the Torah of Hashem,
even one point and one word and one "drop" can save the king's son from the most dangerous situation so that he becomes healthy.
But the revelation of Chassidus by the Alter Rebbe was not in a manner of a "drop";
אבער דער גילוי החסידות דורכן אלטן רבי'ן איז ניט געווען באופן של "טיפה";
he made from the drop a lengthy discourse,
until he produced an entire book of Tanya!
Thus, at the beginning of the time of leadership of the Alter Rebbe, the path was not yet in such a manner,
consequently, there was not then the accusation;
במילא איז דאן ניט געווען דער קטרוג;
but when the time after this came,
when a new path was established,
which has a distinct name,
"His name which shall be called upon him in the holy tongue"162, –
the way of "Chassidus Chabad" –
then a "new accusation"163 came about.
[And although one finds lengthy discourses also before this,
and likewise short discourses after this164 –
this is nevertheless connected to the cause that brought about the delivery of the discourse:
Just as regarding the "opening statement" of a discourse,
which depends on the weekly portion or on the specific event that causes the delivery of the discourse,
like a "Chanukas HaBayis" (when one delivers a discourse beginning with "Mizmor Shir Chanukas HaBayis"165) or the birth of a son or a Bar Mitzvah (- beginning with "Vechazakta Vehayisa Le'ish"166) etc. –
so too regarding the length of the discourse,
it can be,
that due to the particular matter that caused the delivery of the discourse,
the style of the discourse was also in a particular manner,
sometimes more expansive and sometimes the opposite –
more concise.
But the path of Chassidus Chabad,
in the manner of "they will be sustained" –
was innovated in the time close to 5559167,
and this brought about the accusation].
That which one must revive the "king's son" –
a "drop" suffices for this;
איז אויף דעם גענוג א "טיפה";
and the proof –
the drop helped in the time of the Maggid and his students and in the first years of the Alter Rebbe.
Consequently, the parable of the "king's son" is not sufficient to nullify the accusation.
Every matter must lead to "the main thing is the deed"35 –
and this is regarding the aforementioned story:
From this story we have an explicit instruction and an explicit ruling regarding the Alter Rebbe and his students,
that not only was the "accusation" nullified,
but on the contrary,
as they
(the Maggid and the Baal Shem Tov)
said to him "since you have begun, do not cease,
and on the contrary,
when you go out, you shall say more"!
However, the question can be raised:
This was said to the Alter Rebbe himself –
what relevance does it have to "people like us"?
Since certainly that which the story is told to people like us is a proof that it pertains to us,
because it is through Divine Providence,
and "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create a single thing in vain"168 –
the question is:
What is the practical difference for us? We cannot innovate matters in Chassidus,
no more than we can repeat the discourses of the Rebbes,
so what is the practical difference that they said to the Alter Rebbe "when you go out, you shall say more"?
Rather, the practical difference is simply:
That in the area of Chassidus where you may innovate,
in understanding the words of the teacher –
you cannot fulfill your obligation with it as it was a day earlier,
rather you must add in it!
So why was it told to your Rebbe,
the Rebbe of our generation,
that he received from his Rebbe,
his father,
that he received from his Rebbe,
from his father
(the grandfather of the Rebbe of our generation),
and so on until the first directive of the Alter Rebbe that he received from his Rebbes –
from the Maggid and from the Baal Shem Tov.
That from them the directive descends to every Chassid –
that in the matters of Chassidus that were given into his domain,
his avodah must be in the manner of "you shall say more,"
an addition in Chassidus.
Furthermore:
Not only does the matter of addition in Chassidus pertain to every Chassid,
but this pertains to every Jew:
The matter of a "Chassid" is that he learns Chassidus169,
meaning, he learns the inner dimension of the Torah in the manner of "they will be sustained from Me";
ד.ה. ער לערנט פנימיות התורה באופן פון "יתפרנסון מיני'";
according to which it follows,
that the Rambam rules that every Jew will become a "Chassid",
for he says170 that "at that time...
Israel will be great sages and know hidden matters and will grasp knowledge of their Creator according to the capacity of man,
as it is said171 for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea" –
and "will grasp knowledge of their Creator" is the matter of the study of the inner dimension of the Torah172!
And according to the simple understanding of the matter:
When one says "and will grasp knowledge of their Creator" –
it is not speaking about a law in Choshen Mishpat,
it is not speaking about a law in Even HaEzer,
it is not speaking about a law in Yoreh Deah,
and it is not speaking about a law in Orach Chaim –
rather here it speaks about "will grasp knowledge of their Creator"!
And about this the Rambam says that "Israel will be great sages",
that all Jews without exception will be "great sages...
and will grasp knowledge of their Creator",
it follows that according to the ruling of the Rambam, every Jew is connected to the study of the inner dimension of the Torah.
Furthermore:
The Rambam rules<sup>173</sup> that "there is no difference between this world and the days of Moshiach except subjugation to the kingdoms alone";
דער רמב"ם פסק'נט דאך 173 אז "אין בין העוה"ז לימות המשיח אלא שיעבוד מלכיות בלבד";
it is seemingly not understood:
When one jumps from occupying oneself with matters of commerce to "will grasp knowledge of their Creator" –
is this not the greatest change –
so how does the Rambam say that "there is no difference between this world and the days of Moshiach except etc."?!
One must say,
that this is indeed not a change from one extreme to the other,
because even before the days of Moshiach one already prepares oneself
(in a natural way)
for this study of "knowledge of their Creator",
like the preparation of Erev Shabbos for Shabbos,
meaning, that already now one studies "knowledge of their Creator",
and in the language of the verse174 that the Alter Rebbe brings in Igeres HaKodesh175 –
"Know the God of your father and serve Him with a whole heart."
Moreover:
The Rambam himself writes explicitly about the mitzvah of "Know the God of your father" that this pertains to every Jew –
as we see that he begins his book176 with "the foundation of foundations and the pillar of wisdoms to know that there is a First Existence etc."
It follows,
that before he brings all the laws of Orach Chaim and Yoreh Deah and Even HaEzer and Choshen Mishpat –
first of all he brings about the obligation "to know that there is a First Existence...
and all existences...
only exist from the truth of His existence."
Which includes the matter of knowledge of G-dliness as Chassidus explains it,
and as is known that that which "the Baal Shem Tov explained"177,
that creation is at every single moment,
the Rambam explains in the first chapter of Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah178,
where he writes explicitly that "if it would arise in the mind that He does not exist, no other thing could possibly exist",
meaning, that without the Above and the G-dly power that brings existence into being,
existence is nullified!
What does it mean?!
Hashem created the world in six days of creation,
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth"179!
One says,
that the Rambam rules in his book,
the book of "Laws, Laws"180,
that creation was in such a manner,
that when one considers the existence of the Creator, "no other thing could possibly exist"! Which includes all things in the world181.
And the Rambam further precedes,
that one should know that this is "the foundation of foundations and the pillar of wisdoms"!
And in this, Chassidus spread this matter,
as known the explanation in "And the Baal Shem Tov explained177"182,
although this is stated in Midrash Tehillim183
(as the Tzemach Tzedek brings in Likkutei Torah184) –
that the Baal Shem Tov disseminated it. This is also the novelty of the future when "the earth will be filled with knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea"171,
that from a drop and point becomes a sea and expanse.
But as mentioned above –
the change of the time of this world and the days of Moshiach does not consist of this,
rather the change is only "subjugation to the kingdoms".
One must say,
that also now there is an obligation according to Torah that there should be the "those who taste life merit"185 of the matter of the days of Moshiach. And in a manner of knowledge,
as the Rambam rules that the commandment is not only "to believe"186,
rather "to know that there is a First Existence"187 etc.,
which the knowledge becomes a true knowledge in his soul and flesh,
until blood and flesh as his flesh.
Until it becomes a true knowledge –
"he shall fix his thought with strength"188,
and it generates "love and its branches and fear and its branches"188,
which includes all 248 positive commandments and 365 negative commandments189,
great is study that brings to deed119.
And thus it actually becomes –
that through having "know the God of your father",
the fulfillment of Torah and its commandments comes about,
and one brings down in one hour and in one moment the days of Moshiach,
both their beginning,
when "there is no difference between this world and the days of Moshiach except subjugation to the kingdoms alone",
and it is obvious that there will be the occupation in "and they will attain knowledge of their Creator",
And afterwards one comes to the perfection in the days of Moshiach,
the world of the resurrection,
as the ruling of the Ramban190,
And amidst joy and goodness of heart.
[They sang the melody of the Hakafos of Simchas Torah,
and in the middle of the melody the Rebbe shlita hinted with his holy hand that they should whistle].
Continuing the discussion above about completions,
in connection with the matter of joy,
that "they make a feast for the completion of the Torah",
in addition to the completion of the entire Talmud that was made on Yud Tes Kislev,
and the completion of the entire Mishnah that was previously reviewed from the Rebbe Maharash –
here is the place also to make a completion on the Rambam,
because one is involved in the Rambam.
And in particular, just as regarding the Oral Torah in general,
that its beginning is "From when may one recite the Shema in the evening",
and the Gemara explains that "the Tanna, where does he stand? He stands on the verse",
that it is founded on the Written Torah,
so too regarding the Rambam,
as the Rambam writes in his introduction that "therefore I called the name of this work Mishneh Torah,
because a person first reads the Written Torah and afterwards reads this",
i.e., that the work is founded on the Written Torah,
"he stands on the verse".
One finds a wondrous matter in the beginning of the Rambam and the end of the Rambam:
Just as the Rebbe Maharash explains in the aforementioned discourse,
regarding the six orders of the Mishnah,
that their beginning is with the letter Mem and their end is with the letter Mem,
it begins with an open Mem,
"From when may one recite",
and ends with a closed Mem,
"Hashem will bless His people with peace" –
so too in the Mishneh Torah of the Rambam:
The end of the Mishneh Torah is with a closed Mem –
"as the waters cover the sea".
And regarding the beginning – (a)
the entire book is called "Mishneh Torah"
(this is its name by which it is called in the Holy Tongue),
whose beginning is with an open Mem, and (b)
those who will argue that this is the name of the book and not the beginning of the book –
the book begins with a Yud,
"The foundation of foundations" –
the Rambam safeguards this by beginning his book,
before he writes about "the foundation of foundations",
with a verse,
"he stands on the verse",
"Draw out Your kindness to those who know You etc."191 –
which the verse begins with an open Mem!
This is a matter of "their end is interwoven in their beginning and their beginning in their end"192.
Another matter in this:
Just as in the completion of the entire Talmud, the Rebbe Maharash connects the beginning and end of the Mishnah not only from the aspect of the letters
(Mem),
(מ"ם),
but also from the aspect of the content of the matter
(peace),
so too in the Rambam:
Just as the beginning of the Rambam is "to know that there is a First Existence",
with all the details that he lists afterwards –
so too the end of the Rambam is in the matter of "and they will attain knowledge of their Creator according to the capacity of man"!
And just as he connects the "foundation of foundations" at the beginning of the book with "all existents from heaven and earth and what is between them"193,
so too at the conclusion of the book "and the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of Hashem",
that the entire world will be permeated with "knowledge of Hashem".
For although he uses the term "earth" at the conclusion of the Rambam, this is not contrary to "heaven"
(as at the beginning of his book),
rather it means the entire world.
And according to the simple understanding of the matters,
that also in the realm of the angels which is "in heaven"194 there will be "knowledge of Hashem",
all the more so from the earth below
[and especially according to what the Rambam explains at the beginning of his book195 the ten names and ten levels among the angels].
In addition to the aforementioned matter which is "like a conclusion",
that the beginning and conclusion of the Rambam are connected with each other both from the aspect of the letters,
and from the aspect of the content,
there is another matter:
Regarding the number of chapters in the Rambam,
it is explained in various places that there are 1000 chapters,
but there is a dispute about this and variant readings196,
and as we see in the manuscript of the Rambam himself,
that he changed in one place,
and altered the number of the chapter
(as we see in the printed photographs of the Rambam's manuscript).
And there is no difficulty how these changes come about –
because presumably this depends on the editions of the book of the Rambam,
as discussed elsewhere.
But regarding the number of halachos the Rambam writes197:
"All the halachos of these fourteen books are eighty-three halachos".
What is the significance of the number 83?
The Gemara says198 on the verse199 "And I will remove illness from your midst" –
"Illness is bile,
and why is it called illness,
because it has eighty-three illnesses,
illness in gematria is that,
and all of them,
bread with salt in the morning and a jug of water nullify them".
Thus it can be said regarding the 83 halachos in Mishneh Torah of the Rambam –
that the 83 halachos bring about "And I will remove illness from your midst".
And furthermore –
the removal of illness is in the manner of "I will not place upon you"200,
as the Rambam explains in Hilchos Deos201,
that "anyone who conducts himself in these ways that we have instructed
[as he enumerates there in Hilchos Deos]
I guarantee that he will not come to illness all his days...
and he does not need a physician etc.".
Which is in the manner of the healing from above202,
consequently this is the manner of healing as it comes through the Torah,
because Torah is "from the heavens He made you hear His voice"203,
and Torah indeed brings healing to the world204,
until in a manner of healing from above –
that "I will not place upon you for I am Hashem your healer",
because Torah is the word of Hashem,
and especially halacha in the Torah,
"the word of Hashem205 –
this is halacha"206,
which is the essence of the book of the Rambam.
And this also gives encouragement and strengthening in the dissemination of the study of the Rambam,
i.e., that together with the study of Written Torah and Oral Torah,
and especially the inner dimension of the Torah,
and especially the study cycles of Chitas,
established by the leader of our generation –
there should also be the study of Mishneh Torah of the Rambam.
And all these matters will further hasten the fulfillment of the prophecy "and in that time there will be neither famine nor war nor envy nor competition etc. for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea".
And one could elaborate on all this –
but now it will become a "conclusion",
it will become a "beginning",
and one does not know when one will finish it...
Therefore we will now proceed to say a joyous melody.
And as an introduction:
Since this is the conclusion of the days of Chanukah,
whose significance is corresponding to the days of Mashiach,
eight days and eight lights corresponding to the harp of eight strings and eight princes of man
(as explained at length in the discourses of Chanukah of our Rebbes and leaders207,
from the Alter Rebbe until the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the leader of our generation) –
Now is the appropriate time to sing,
as usual,
first a melody of "preparation",
then the melody of the Alter Rebbe,
then the melody of the Mitteler Rebbe –
a melody of joy.
And after this –
also the well-known melody "Shivneh Beis HaMikdash",
and the melody that is sung in the language of "Baei Olam",
that "nit nit nikavo",
there is nothing besides the Supreme One alone,
who is the "first existent" and the "One",
until true unity.
And after the final blessing they will also distribute charity matters.
Here is the place to mention again about completing matters of charity,
that those who for whatever reason have not given with the required completeness,
should complete it not only according to the completeness of today –
What does this come to teach us?
This has already become a law,
a matter of "as is proper for me to do"208,
and beyond the letter of the law and "a matter of piety" –
but also according to the completeness of tomorrow.
Thus the question arises:
From where does he know what will be tomorrow? He is not a foreseer of the future?
So it is exactly as in other matters,
when one has a question –
one goes to a rav,
so too there are rabbis who sit here at the table,
and together with this also "the kohen who will be in those days"209 –
the rav will presumably not begrudge him,
and will wish him completeness,
and in a manner as a rav should wish,
in the manner of "rav" meaning increase.
And may there be increase in physicality and increase in spirituality and increase in physicality and spirituality together,
Until the true increase comes,
"the blessing in increase...
peace in increase"210,
and all matters in increase,
until the true increase,
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach.
We will repeat again what was proclaimed yesterday – that those who wish to give their name and their mother's name in order to bring the note to the gravesite of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation –
should do so while there is still time,
and we will not need to wait for this.
And this will further hasten,
that we should not need to wait for our righteous Moshiach, heaven forbid,
and he comes in an instant, in the blink of an eye,
"I will hasten it" in "I will hasten it."
Afterwards he said:
Let the notes be distributed.
Afterwards they sang the preparatory melody,
the melody of the Alter Rebbe
(the fourth stanza –
once),
"Nie zhuritsy khlaptsy."
The one who leads the prayers, may he live, sang "May it be Your will that the Holy Temple be speedily rebuilt in our days, and grant us our portion in Your Torah."
Afterwards the Rebbe, may he live for many good days, began to sing "Niet niet nikavo,"
and in the middle of the melody he signaled with his holy hand that they should whistle.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to recite the after-blessing –
will surely recite the after-blessing.
The Rebbe, may he live for many good days, distributed to the "tankistn," may they live, dollar bills,
in order to distribute to each of those present, may they live, one bill,
with the intent to give it
(or its equivalent)
to charity.
Before his departure he began to sing "For with joy you shall go forth."
