English translation 1
There is a farbrengen connected with Chanukah,
There is a farbrengen connected with Chanukah,
after the giving of Chanukah money, one makes a farbrengen –
so the farbrengen is connected with that which in Chanukah itself is the praise of Chanukah.
And although in this year there was a proposal1 that on each of the days of Chanukah a farbrengen should be made –
however, within this itself there are differences:
whether it is a farbrengen that takes place on weekdays and only for a particular group,
in which case it involves less burden on the community,
or for several groups,
in which case it involves a greater burden on the community,
up to many groups and on the Sabbath day,
like the farbrengen,
in which case it involves the greatest burden.
Also, a farbrengen in general,
and particularly a Chassidic farbrengen, it is seemingly not appropriate to say that it is a matter of burden –
because it is exactly the opposite,
as is known the note that came down from heaven2 which the Alter Rebbe transmitted, and after the Nasi of our generation he ordered it to be printed3 and publicized,
regarding the greatest benefit that a farbrengen brings about:
with the satisfaction it creates Above,
to the extent that it comes down below and into "He who works salvations in the midst of the earth"3,
Consequently, it is understandable,
that although from the perspective of the body a farbrengen is a bodily burden,
but for the soul it is exactly the opposite of a burden –
it is the greatest benefit. And since there must be the overcoming of form over matter4
(the soul over the body),
so when the soul overcomes its body,
and the bodily burden does not disturb it,
it brings about the great benefit that comes through this,
for the soul5.
And regarding this, it is so concerning Shabbat:
"For he who toils on Erev Shabbat will eat on Shabbat"5,
it is understood and simple that although on Erev Shabbat there must be toil,
he does it with joy because in this regard the momentary toil is considered nothing compared to the delight that results from it, "will eat on Shabbat".
Nevertheless, for the body there is a toil of preparation in honor of Shabbat,
but this is because "what is it considered" compared to the delight that results from it.
And particularly since according to Torah,
which is eternal at every hour,
also a temporary matter is an eternal matter,
consequently, also the momentary toil –
is an eternal matter.
He must seek an explanation of how both things are consistent
(that this is a matter of momentary bodily toil which is, however, an eternal matter etc.,
and together with this it is completely the opposite of toil) –
but it is a clear thing that there are explanations for this,
and even if he does not yet know the explanation,
he understands, however,
that this is still due to a lack of knowledge,
and a lack of knowledge is not a deficiency in itself,
so that it does not change the reality at all,
and moreover,
so it is even when the knowledge is the reality –
what does this come to teach us,
rather this is even at this time,
this time is upon it and even in truth,
because he says it this way and it is only due to a lack of knowledge,
and as it is written6 "for not from you alone is it, and if it is from you it is from you",
consequently, this does not change his feeling that the matter is true.
In the fixed occurrence of Shabbat Chanukah in this year, a special matter comes about –
due to the fact that the holy day is the seventh day of Chanukah.
With preface:
The fixed occurrence of a festival and holiday is according to the day of the month when it happened the first time,
and not according to the day of the week when it happened.
That is, that each and every year a festival is fixed on the same date in the month,
whereas regarding the day of the week there are changes from year to year.
For example –
the festival of Pesach was established each and every year on the fifteenth of Nissan,
the day of the month when the Jews left Egypt,
whereas regarding the establishment on the day of the week there are changes from year to year, and it is not specifically on the same day of the week as it was the first time.
And from this it is understood that the primary matter is the establishment on the days of the month,
whereas the establishment on the day of the week is secondary
(and requires great examination) –
and the proof is that in several years when the establishment of the first time falls on the days of the month and the days of the week exactly as it was the first time, it does not become a festival with a complete establishment
(that is, an example)
overrides and pushes aside the establishment on the days of the week.
In other capitulations in the world of Tova Teofali,
that one can calculate that every 28 years all the determinations come out in the same order,
and the determination of the sun is generally year by year,
but there is no festival that occurs
(also)
in which it occurs for the first time, it is stated that it has in it both the essential and the secondary perfections,
because it has in it both the determination of the days of the month and the determination of the days of the week.
For example, as this is regarding the matter of the occurrence with the festival of Pesach:
The commandment of Sefirat HaOmer was said regarding "the morrow of the Shabbat" in "seven complete weeks shall they be"8,
i.e., the explanation is "the morrow of Pesach" in the "morrow of the festival"9,
i.e., the second day of Pesach. However, it is stated in the Midrash11,
that when the second day of Pesach occurs "the morrow of the Shabbat" in the days of the week
(in the simple explanation it is "the morrow of the Shabbat"),
i.e., on Sunday, then the "seven complete weeks" are in a higher perfection,
with greater strength and vigor. And as discussed many times at length12.
And accordingly, one will also understand regarding the present day of Chanukah –
the seventh day of Chanukah:
Nasi17 that they brought for the inauguration of the altar in the Mishkan,
and the reason why we read this specifically on Chanukah is –
because in this reason is the matter of the inauguration of the altar
(also retailers)
18 by the Nesiim who volunteered,
which recalls the victory of the Chashmonaim over the Greeks and the inauguration of the altar in the days of the Chashmonaim. And from this it is understood that the matter of the offerings of the Nesiim and the laws of the inauguration of the altar,
from which comes the matter of the offerings of the Nesiim and the inauguration of the altar.
And in all the years after this, it comes down that this day should be in all the days of the Chashmonaim,
even in exile,
even in double and multiplied darkness of exile –
that one lives with it –
the seven attributes that are aroused through their service, the offerings that they brought for the inauguration of the altar,
from which the inauguration of the Chashmonaim was drawn.
From which it is understood,
that on the seventh day of Chanukah in every year,
when we read about the offering of the Nasi on the seventh day,
"Nasi of the children of Ephraim"19 –
one then lives with the offering of that Nasi.
Which is a remembrance,
the Nasi on the seventh day of Chanukah in every year
(when we read this in a matter),
the Nasi comes as it is from the aspect of the days of the week:
In his commentary on the Torah, Rashi writes20 that the first day of the inauguration of the altar was on Sunday:
"After the day in all ten crowns,
first for the work of creation,
first for the Nesiim etc." And from this it follows that on the seventh day,
"Nasi of the children of Ephraim" was on Shabbat.
And accordingly it follows that in this year,
when the seventh day of Chanukah occurs on Shabbat,
we have the matter of "on the seventh day, Nasi of the children of Ephraim" not only from the aspect that it is the seventh day of Chanukah
(when we read the Nasi every year),
but also from the aspect of the determination in the days of the week, it was on Shabbat, Nasi of the children of Ephraim the first time, and it was in that day within you.
It is known the teaching of the Alter Rebbe13 that one must live with the time,
and as it was explained –
with the portion in the Torah that is read and studied at that time.
And the explanation and reason for this is simply:
Because the Torah is Torat Chaim and Torah is light,
i.e., a directive in life,
and a luminous directive in life –
it is understood that one must live with the Torah that is read and studied at that time.
From this it is understood that although the saying about living with the time was said regarding the weekly portion,
the same matter applies also regarding a special Torah reading that is read at a specific time. And in our matter –
the reading of the portion of the Nesiim during the days of Chanukah:
Because we read this section in the Torah during the days of Chanukah with a blessing before and after,
which is Torat Chaim,
a directive in life,
it is understood according to the above that one must then "live" with it,
just as one must live with the weekly portion.
From this it is also understood regarding the Torah reading on this day –
Shabbat Chanukah,
that in addition to the need to live on this Shabbat with the weekly portion,
Parshat Mikeitz,
one must also live with the conclusion of the reading of this Shabbat –
for all follows the conclusion14 –
the portion in the Torah of the section of the princes that is read on this Shabbat Chanukah
(the seventh day of Chanukah).
On the contrary:
Since the reading of Chanukah is a new thing relative to the reading of the weekly portion –
it is therefore even more beloved. As we see simply also with a simple person:
Because this Shabbat is also Chanukah,
a festival
[as Chanukah is called in several places15] –
it affects him,
even upon his eating and drinking,
that this is in a more elevated manner because it is Chanukah.
From this it is understood that living with the reading of Chanukah on this day is more beloved than the weekly portion because of the novelty in the matter.
And regarding the reading of this day of Chanukah, one has the aforementioned advantage,
that in it one has both the completeness from the aspect of the days of the month and the completeness from the aspect of the days of the week:
On Chanukah we read about the princes,16
i.e., the offerings of the princes in Parshat Nasso17 that they brought for the dedication of the altar in the Mishkan,
and the reason why we read this specifically on Chanukah is –
because it recalls the victory of the Hasmoneans
(even to the ironworker)18,
which recalls the victory of the Hasmoneans over the Greeks and the dedication of the altar in the days of the Hasmoneans.
And in all the years after this –
it comes down that this day should be in all the days of the Hasmoneans,
even in exile,
even in the double and multiplied darkness of exile –
that one lives with it –
the twelve measures that are awakened through their service, the offerings that they brought for the dedication of the altar,
from which the dedication of the Hasmoneans was drawn.
From which it is understood,
that on the seventh day of Chanukah in every single year,
when we read about the offering of the prince of the seventh day,
"the prince of the children of Ephraim"19 –
one then lives with the offering of that prince.
And this is a remembrance,
the prince on the seventh day of Chanukah in every single year
(when we read this in a thing),
the prince comes as it is from the aspect of the days of the week:
In the commentary of the Torah, Rashi writes20 that the first day of the dedication of the altar was on the first day of the week:
"After the day, in all ten crowns,
first for the work of creation,
first for the princes, etc." From which it follows that on the seventh day,
"the prince of the children of Ephraim" was on the day of Shabbat.
And accordingly, it follows that in this year,
when the seventh day of Chanukah occurs on Shabbat,
one has the matter of "on the seventh day the prince of the children of Ephraim" not only from the aspect that it is the seventh day of Chanukah
(when we read the prince in every single year),
but also from the aspect of the fixed occurrence in the days of the week, that on Shabbat the prince of the children of Ephraim was the first time and was in that day itself.
Certainly there are in this matters on the level of hint,
on the level of homily and on the level of secret, up to the deepest secrets,
and as the saying of our Nesi'im21 that in Rashi's commentary there is also "the wine of the Torah",
i.e., the inner dimension of the Torah –
but in all levels of study there is the principle that "a matter does not depart from its simple meaning"22,
first and foremost one must study it on the level of the simple meaning.
It follows,
that even a simple person understands,
that in the fixed occurrence of this year,
when the seventh day of Chanukah occurs on Shabbat,
one has the matter of the prince of the children of Ephraim not only from the aspect of the seventh day of Chanukah
(as in every year on the seventh day of Chanukah)
but also from the aspect of the days of the week –
the day of Shabbat,
on which Ephraim offered.
And as discussed above,
that when one has the fixed occurrence both from the aspect of the days of the month and from the aspect of the days of the week,
one then has the matter with greater strength and greater power,
because since this was the fixed occurrence the first time
(that the offering of the prince on the seventh day was on Shabbat)
it shows that this pertains to the entirety of the matter,
only sometimes it does not come out in a revealed manner. But when it does come out in a revealed manner, it is with greater strength and greater power. And from this it is drawn upon all the years.
Since on this day –
the seventh day of Chanukah, which is Shabbat Chanukah –
one must "live" with the Torah reading "on the seventh day the prince of the children of Ephraim,"
and certainly in this year when it falls on the day of Shabbat
(as it was at the time of his offering for the first time) –
it is understood that one must derive from this a directive in life in actual deed,
for the deed is the main thing23.
And a directive in plainness that is also understandable to the simplest of the simple,
since this
(the offering of Ephraim on the day of Shabbat)
is stated in the plain meaning of Scripture of the Written Torah.
It will be understood by prefacing the explanation on this matter in the Oral Torah –
for the Torah was given with its interpretation24:
On the matter that the prince of the children of Ephraim offered sacrifices on the day of Shabbat
(for seemingly, how can one offer a sacrifice on the day of Shabbat)
there are two explanations
(as discussed at length previously25):
a) The sacrifice of the prince had the status of an individual sacrifice,
and every individual sacrifice does not override Shabbat26,
but here there was a hora'as sha'ah27 that the prince of the children of Ephraim should offer
(the individual sacrifice)
also on Shabbat.
A proof that this was an individual sacrifice is from the fact that the prince brought the sacrifice from his own property,
not from what the tribe gave –
"he brought from his own and did not collect from his tribe"28,
which shows that this was not a communal sacrifice,
but rather an individual sacrifice:
A communal sacrifice must be purchased from funds that each individual gave over to the community
(and it does not remain "his own"),
and not merely given over,
but rather handed over properly, properly29
(not once "properly" but twice "properly").
But here it was exactly the opposite:
"he brought from his own and did not collect from his tribe."
From this it is understood that even according to the view that a tribe is called a congregation30
(regarding the sacrifice of a bull for an error of the congregation that is brought for an entire tribe) –
only within the congregation itself there are several levels:
a tribe is called a congregation,
and a larger public –
the entire congregation of the children of Israel,
all twelve tribes. And from this too there are several teachings] –
nevertheless, the sacrifices of the princes
(at the time of the dedication of the altar)
were not a tribal sacrifice –
because "he brought from his own and did not collect from his tribe,"
and if it had been a tribal sacrifice
(a communal sacrifice)
every Jew of that tribe would have had to be "handed over properly, properly,"
as is the case with every communal sacrifice.
And therefore one must arrive at a "hora'as sha'ah."
The second explanation:
b) Even though the prince "brought from his own,"
but since he is a prince of an entire tribe and he brings his sacrifice as "prince of the tribe of Ephraim"
(and so forth),
"Scripture attributed him to his tribe"31,
and a tribe is called a congregation –
therefore his sacrifice receives the status and force of a communal sacrifice which overrides Shabbat.
The completeness of the dedication of the altar is specifically through the fact that each prince offered his sacrifices,
where each prince has his own matter specifically on his festival day,
and the completeness of the dedication of the altar through the princes is in that each prince has his own matter specifically.32 It is logical to say according to this that it is according to the first manner
(for according to the first reason33 the princes offered an individual sacrifice,
which is generally not [done] and one should offer it as a communal sacrifice,
all the more so it is an individual sacrifice. Therefore it is not plausible to say that the offering of the princes was as a communal sacrifice, for in this it is for the entire tribe for the sake of the dedication of the altar.
Moreover,
the princes themselves had agreed that since all wanted to offer their sacrifices on the first day,
as it is stated in the Sifri that they were concerned:
"And the princes brought the dedication of the altar on the day it was anointed, and the princes brought their sacrifice before the altar"33,
until it is stated in the Midrash34 that "Scripture considered it as if all of them offered on the first day"
[and likewise it is stated regarding the last day (the twelfth day) –
"as if all of them offered on the last day"],
because there too the order of all the sacrifices of all the princes is required. And that in actuality each one was on separate days,
this is because the Most High made "one prince per day, one prince per day"35,
but they themselves all offered on the first day.
And as mentioned,
each nasi added his unique aspect to this.
Based on this, it is understood why the Chanukat HaMizbeiach was accomplished through all twelve nesi'im
(not only through the first nasi on the first day),
because 36 they
(from their side)
all brought offerings on the first day. And each one added his aspect to this –
and through the offering of all of them together on the first day, the Chanukat HaMizbeiach was accomplished,
only in practice the Holy One, blessed be He, wanted their offering to be on separate days,
"one nasi per day, one nasi per day."
From this it follows,
that the offerings of the nesi'im are considered not only as communal offerings of a tribe
(specifically the congregation),
but rather communal offerings of the entire congregation of the children of Israel –
because "Scripture credits them as if all of them offered on the first day and as if all of them offered on the last day."
That is, the offering of each nasi is combined with the offerings of all the other nesi'im,
and all of them together dedicate the altar.
According to both of the above explanations, it follows that in the offering of the nasi of the children of Ephraim there was a great novelty:
According to the first explanation, it follows that there was a tremendous novelty here –
and thereby one sees the power of an individual in Israel:
Although according to Torah law, an individual's offering does not override Shabbat,
there was an exception,
that even though the offering of the nasi of the children of Ephraim is an individual's offering –
nevertheless there was a hora'at sha'ah that he should offer it on Shabbat!
And a hora'at sha'ah does not come simply like that 37 –
rather, this itself is a law in the Torah
(even though it is a law only for the moment),
that at this time one must arrive at the directive that an individual's offering should be brought on Shabbat,
and to such an extent is the necessity for this that it outweighs the established halachah in the Torah that an individual's offering does not override Shabbat at all!
And through this one also sees the most sublime power of an individual in Israel:
One does not say
(according to the first explanation)
that the strength of this offering of the nasi is because it is an offering of a tribe,
which has the strength of a communal offering,
which overrides Shabbat,
similar to how the offering of the entire daily order overrides Shabbat,
rather one says that it is specifically an individual's offering –
"he brought from his own and did not collect from his tribe" –
and nevertheless the power of the individual is so great,
that there was a hora'at sha'ah that this overrides the law in the Torah that an individual's offering does not override Shabbat!
According to the second explanation
(that the offering of the nasi of the children of Ephraim had the law of a communal offering) –
one sees an even greater novelty.
The nasi of the children of Ephraim was only an individual.
Nevertheless, one cares,
that not only does it override Shabbat
(due to the hora'at sha'ah),
but moreover: his
(the individual's)
which is "he brought from his own and did not collect from his tribe",
has the power to become like a communal offering, and therefore it overrides Shabbat!
The lesson from this,
also for the simplest of the simple:
One might think that he is only an individual,
and,
what can he accomplish through his action, and all the more so through his speech and thought,
it is only an individual –
but a word, a thought,
of an individual –
is it also in a single person who is alone?!
Today's day teaches him –
the seventh of Chanukah and Shabbat Chanukah,
the day of the offering of the nasi of the tribe of Ephraim who offered on the day of Shabbat the power that an individual in Israel has:
Although he is seemingly only an individual –
he must know that this is a level that is sublime without end. He lives the quality of Peretz,
and Zerach –
that one sees,
since this is the son of Yaakov Avinu 39 and the like,
and especially since this is the servant 40 of Hashem,
and with this he has the power,
and from this the leaf 41 rises above all.
Thus "something fixed is not nullified."
And therefore he should not think that he is only an individual and what can he accomplish with his thought, speech, and action,
rather he must know
(and one can also explain this to the animal soul)
that being connected to the Holy One, blessed be He, "something fixed is not nullified" and therefore he has the power,
as an individual,
that through his one action,
one speech or one thought, he should tip himself and the entire world to the scale of merit and bring about for himself and them salvation and deliverance 42.
Afterwards comes the study of the second explanation mentioned above –
That furthermore:
Not only does he have the power as an individual to accomplish the most elevated things,
Rather, being an individual, he has the power of a community,
For a community has more power than an individual –
As it is written43 “Behold, God is great and does not despise.”
And although the power of an individual
(that “a fixed item is not nullified”)
comes from his connection with the Above –
Nevertheless, there is a manner in which the Above invests itself in the power of an individual,
And in which the Above invests itself in the power of a community,
Which is even stronger and greater than
(He invests itself in)
The power of an individual.
And here we have the lesson
(from the second explanation),
That being an individual, he has in potential not only as an individual
(for an individual can also accomplish much,
as above),
But also the power of a community.
And this –
that an individual also has the power of a community –
Can also be made understandable to a simple person. And one must be able to explain it to him immediately,
And there is no time for him to sit and study because he must fulfill the directive in the remaining hours of the seventh day of Chanukah.
So one explains it to him simply:
When he performs his private service in his thought, speech, and action
(as an individual)
“with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might”44,
To the extent that he speaks words that come from the heart,
And likewise regarding his action, he conducts himself in a manner that from him they will see and so they will do –
Then it is certain that words that come from the heart enter the heart45 and accomplish their effect,
And indeed it will be that from him they will see and so many will do.
And this is not something that exists only in Torah,
Rather it is implanted in the nature of creation,
Even among non-Jews. That when a person speaks words that come from the heart, they enter the heart and accomplish their effect.
And this is something that applies to every person,
For every person is by nature a “political being”,
As the Rambam writes46.
That is, it is in the nature of human beings that a person does not remain locked up alone in a room,
Or even in his home or only with his family or with special people in his city and the like,
Rather he is a “political being”
(from the term “medina”47),
He finds himself in an entire country and is intermixed with the inhabitants of the country.
Consequently, it is understood that his conduct is not only the conduct of an individual for himself,
Rather it affects a multitude
(a community),
Upon his surrounding environment,
For he finds himself among others and they see how he conducts himself,
And they learn from him. And therefore it is relevant that he be a proper example of how one should conduct oneself in a manner that it should be “and I will be sanctified among the children of Israel”48 and not, heaven forbid, the opposite.
From this it is understood simply that every individual is not only an individual, rather he is connected and has the power of a community,
For his conduct affects others around him.
From this is also understood the great responsibility that every person has,
For this is not only a responsibility of an individual regarding his own conduct,
Rather it is a responsibility also regarding the conduct of the community that sees how he conducts himself!
And since he has a greater responsibility
(also for those around him) –
It evokes in him more exertion and enthusiasm and vitality and effort in his service, knowing that this affects not only an individual but also a multitude.
And this is the lesson of Shabbat Chanukah in this year,
Which is on the seventh day of Chanukah
(the day of the offering of the prince of the children of Ephraim which was on the Sabbath day) –
The elevated powers and the great responsibility that an individual has,
To the extent that he has the power of the community.
And this lesson can already begin to be fulfilled on this Shabbat itself,
For even on the Sabbath day there are matters that every Jew can accomplish.
And as mentioned above,
Although the lesson is stated explicitly and emphatically on Shabbat Chanukah in this year
(due to the calendar determination that it is on the seventh day of Chanukah) –
Nevertheless, the lesson is drawn from this year into the service in all years.
So that this also becomes a preparation for the service in the Future to Come –
as is known that the mitzvos in this time are "markers"49 that serve as an introduction, preparation, and qualification for the fulfillment of the mitzvos in the Future to Come,50 which will be in ultimate perfection in the manner of "according to the command of Your will,"51
and from the "markers" in this time one comes to –
"God is seen in Zion,"52
and "I show you the lights of Zion"53 in the Third Beis HaMikdash and the dedication of the Third Beis HaMikdash,
in the true and complete redemption through Mashiach Tzidkeinu.
And this can be connected with the content of Ephraim
(whose Nasi of the tribe of Ephraim brought the offering on the seventh day, Shabbos) –
as it is stated in our parshah54 that he is so called,
"for God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction."
That is,
that even though Ephraim was born in Egypt, "the land of affliction,"
in constraints and limitations,55
so that from this is derived Egypt in the simple sense,
"the land of affliction" of the opposite side –
nevertheless, on the contrary:
specifically there "God has made me fruitful,"
and in the manner of the verse56 "as they afflicted him, so did he multiply and so did he spread out."
And in the manner of what is stated further regarding Ephraim,
that even though he is the younger son –
"his younger brother will be greater than him."57
And this is also an explanation for the length of the exile
(so that there should be the "God has made me fruitful" and "so did he multiply and so did he spread out" more than until now),
because after all matters and after one cries out "until when,"58 –
one must nevertheless give some explanation why the exile drags on so long!...
And now one can no longer accept the answer that was given to the Jews in Egypt,
that the length of the exile in the manner of "and they will enslave them and afflict them"59 is so that there should be the "and afterwards they will go out with great wealth"60 –
because now "all the appointed times have passed and the matter depends only on teshuvah,"61
and during all these years in exile Jews have certainly already achieved the matter of teshuvah in its completeness,
And especially when one stands on the day of Shabbos,
for Shabbos is the letters
(and content)
"teisheiv,"62
as explained in Iggeres HaTeshuvah,63
and as is also understood even for a simple person:
when he says the word "Shabbos" while speaking to the Above in prayer
(at Kabbalas Shabbos and the like),
he sees simply that the letters in Lashon HaKodesh of the word "Shabbos" are the same letters as the word "teisheiv,"
which are letters of Lashon HaKodesh,
a holy language,
which derives from the Above Who is "Holy am I."64
Consequently, he asks:
Since the Torah says that "all the appointed times have passed and the matter depends only on teshuvah,"
and one already has the matter of teshuvah –
what is the explanation that the exile still drags on?!
And since Torah is from the word hora'ah (instruction),65
Torah must give some instruction and an answer to the question –
consequently, one asks what is the answer to the fact that the exile still drags on now?...
And the intention in asking the question is not merely in order to ask difficulties and thereby prove that one is a great sage who can ask a question,
but rather so that the redemption should come in actuality!
There are those who ask difficulties in order to prove their great wisdom. He thinks that he is a great lamdan and he has a desire to prove his wisdom. How can he do this? By asking great questions,
afterwards he comes and answers the questions –
this proves that he is the greatest sage who can answer such great questions.
Afterwards there are those who show an even greater trick:
on every matter that someone says –
they say "the opposite is logical"! And he argues that he has a foundation for this from the Baal Shem Tov:
the Baal Shem Tov said66 that he will answer every question that one asks him and will ask a question on every matter that one tells him! And it is explained regarding this67 –
that a question in a lower world is answered in a world above it,
but regarding an even higher world, even the answer is insufficient,
consequently one can further ask a question, etc.
א.וו.
Consequently, the one who says "the opposite is logical" about everything argues that he conducts himself as the Baal Shem Tov conducted himself!...
In truth, however, one understands that the way he conducts himself is not like the Baal Shem Tov conducted himself in this matter. But since he has already begun with such a path of the opposite of what is apparent –
it is a descent for the sake of ascent,
let him come from this to the conduct of the Baal Shem Tov of love of Israel and love of the Torah and love of Israel,
through which, by means of the matter of love of Israel, he nullifies the cause of the exile,
"because of our sins,"
consequently the effect becomes nullified –
the "we were exiled from our land,"
and this already blocks the crying and asking questions about the length of the exile
(as above),
And instead of using the voice to cry "Until when?" and to cry what is the explanation of the length of the exile –
one uses the voice
[which "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create a single thing in vain" )
to cry "Give thanks to the Lord, call out in His name,"
"Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His kindness endures forever" *71,
as one cries it in Hallel on the days of Chanukah.
As one sees the custom of Israel,
that most of Hallel is said in a whisper
(relatively),
but when it comes to "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His kindness endures forever,"
and likewise "Please, Lord, save now" and "Please, Lord, grant success now" –
the entire congregation shouts it!
And the shout of "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His kindness endures forever" in the recitation of Hallel on the days of Chanukah with a blessing before it and after it,
and a complete Hallel
[which outweighs the half-Hallel of Rosh Chodesh,
for which reason yesterday,
on Rosh Chodesh Tevet,
they recited a complete Hallel because it was also Chanukah] –
gives strength so that instead of using the voice to cry "Until when?" and to ask questions etc.,
one will cry "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, for His kindness endures forever"!
And this is hastened even more through the fulfillment of the instruction of the Shabbat of Chanukah,
when there is the matter of the offering of Ephraim on the seventh day, both from the perspective of the days of the month and from the perspective of the days of the week. And from this it is drawn forth in all the years.
Until one comes to "And Judah approached him,"
the approach of Judah to Joseph
(as it is also stated in the Haftarah) –
as explained in the discourses of Chassidus,
including the discourse beginning "And My servant David shall be king over them" of his holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the leader of our generation
(which has already been printed ),
that this is the unification of action
(Judah)
and study
(Joseph),
and in this itself there was "And Judah approached him,"
the approach and unification comes through the service of Judah
(action)
in his own capacity,
that Judah
(action)
of his own accord ascends from below upward to Joseph –
as is known the superiority of service in one's own capacity and the service of action,
for which reason in the future to come it will specifically be "a great action."
And through the fulfillment of the instruction of this Shabbat, one hastens even more toward the redemption, that it should come in a manner of "I will hasten it" in the "I will hasten it,"
speedily in our days and in our actual, immediate time.
In addition to the unique matter of the Shabbat of Chanukah in this year
(on the seventh day of Chanukah) –
there is a general superiority in the Shabbat of Chanukah in every year, regardless of which calendar configuration it falls in:
Since Chanukah is eight consecutive days –
there must always be a Shabbat within them. This is the Shabbat of Chanukah.
And this Shabbat has within it a special elevation relative to the other Shabbats of the year, being not merely a Shabbat,
but a Shabbat
(within the eight days)
of Chanukah:
Every Shabbat influences the days with which the Shabbat has a connection –
both the days before it,
as is known that Shabbat brings completion and elevation in a manner of "and they were completed" in all the matters of the days before it,
and also the days after it,
as is known that from Shabbat all the days are blessed from it;
כידוע אז פון שבת איז מיני' מתברכין כולהו יומין 81;
When, however, there come special days of the festival of Chanukah –
it is understood that the Shabbat of Chanukah is in a more elevated manner,
because the Shabbat influences not merely into the weekdays,
but into the days of Chanukah –
in this Shabbat, the completion of "and they were completed" is realized in all the matters of the days of Chanukah before the Shabbat,
and from it are blessed the matters of the days of Chanukah after the Shabbat.
A simple person comes and asks a question:
The aforementioned matter is not only applicable to the Shabbat of Chanukah,
but also to the Shabbat that occurs during the festival of Passover and the Shabbat that occurs during the festival of Sukkot:
Since both the festival of Passover and the festival of Sukkot have seven days
(as it is stated in the Written Torah,
and as they are observed in the Land of Israel),
it is therefore inevitable that they include a Shabbat,
because it is impossible to have seven consecutive days without a Shabbat
(one need not resort to specifically eight days for this);
(מ'דארף אויף דעם ניט אנקומען צו שמונה ימים דוקא);
and since they are festivals,
it is understood that the Shabbat within them is of a most elevated nature, because it influences
(not merely during the weekdays, but)
during the days of the festival. Now, what is the innovation of the Shabbat of Chanukah?
One answers him that the difference lies in the very fact that Chanukah is specifically eight days, so this is a Shabbat of Chanukah of eight days,
whereas the festivals of Passover and Sukkot are only seven days.
He asks:
Well? What is the innovation in the fact that this is a Shabbat of Chanukah of eight days,
and of seven days
(of Passover and Sukkot)
there is also a Shabbat? One answers him:
Generally, Shabbat only influences seven days,
whereas in the Shabbat of Chanukah the novelty is that the Shabbat has the power to influence eight days!
And the explanation of this is understood from the very difference that the other festivals
(Passover and Sukkot)
are seven days,
whereas Chanukah is eight days,
as follows.
It will be understood by prefacing the explanation of the novelty that Chanukah is eight days
(not seven days like the other appointed times) –
which is indeed a novelty,
which is seemingly entirely incomprehensible,
and as has been discussed many times, no one poses a "block of a question":
The Chanukah lights are a memorial to the miracle that occurred with the lights of the Temple. As the Gemara relates: "What is Chanukah? ... When the Greeks entered the Sanctuary, they defiled all the oils in the Sanctuary, and when the Hasmonean kingdom prevailed and defeated them, they searched and found only one cruse of oil that was lying with the seal of the High Priest, and there was only enough in it to light for one day; a miracle occurred with it, and they lit from it for eight days.
The following year, they established them and made them festive days..."
The "block of a question" arises:
The lights of the Temple were seven lights –
now, how is it that the Chanukah lights,
which are a memorial to the miracle with the lights of the Temple,
are
(not seven, but)
eight lights?!
The simple answer to this is:
Because "a miracle occurred with it and they lit from it for eight days"
(even though the amount of oil by nature "was only enough to light for one day"),
therefore they established that one should light eight lights for eight days. And the reason why this was established for eight days is explained
(even though the miracle was seemingly only for seven days) –
because on the first day the miracle was that they found one cruse of oil
(as is also hinted in Sha'arei Orah),
along with several other explanations on this,
with which they explain why one recites the blessing "Who performed miracles" also on the first day.
And the reason why the miracle lasted eight days –
the early authorities explain,
because it took eight days "until they crushed olives and extracted pure oil from it",
"because they had pure oil at a distance of four days and they needed eight days for going and returning".
But when one delves into this,
even superficially,
even the simplest of the simple sees that this is not an answer. And one need not resort to being a believer, the son of a believer for this,
rather even one with an easily discerning mind, this is not an answer:
It is not possible to say that a festival by Torah law
(Chanukah)
was established for eight days
(because of the fact that the miracle was for eight days)
due to the fact that in the natural world they happened to be found in a certain place and by nature they needed to travel a distance of eight days
(there and back)
in order to obtain olives and crush them, because the olives have certain properties by nature that take time to crush, etc.,
For the reality is exactly the opposite:
A matter in Torah is not determined according to the boundaries of the natural world. On the contrary:
He looked into the Torah and created the world,
the boundaries of nature are established and derive from the matters as they stand in the Torah.
That is, the boundaries of nature do not compel that it should be so, a matter in Torah,
but on the contrary:
Because the matter in Torah is thus, therefore it is also thus brought down into the boundaries of nature. For "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth",
the Most High created nature in a specific manner,
and the Most High is entirely not limited by boundaries and He could have created nature in an entirely different manner.
And this is likewise regarding the analogies in the words of our sages about the Most High and the matters above,
"To what can this be compared? To a king of flesh and blood" and from this there is an analogy for the King of kings of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He:
The explanation of this is not that the analogy is an explanation and compulsion that it is so above,
but only a proof that it is so above,
for since the matters below were brought down from the matters above,
"The kingdom on earth is like the kingdom in heaven" –
one cannot say that they compel that the matters above are so,
but precisely the opposite:
Because the matters above are in a specific manner,
therefore it is also thus brought down below. Consequently, the matters below are only a proof that the matters above are so.
Consequently, one cannot answer that the reason that the festival of Chanukah is eight days
(and not seven days,
corresponding to the seven lamps of the Temple)
is due to the limitations and boundaries of the nature of the world
(that it took eight days "until they crushed olives and extracted pure oil from it",
"because they had pure oil a distance of four days and they needed eight days for going and returning"),
for the reality is precisely the opposite:
The reality of nature was created specifically in such a manner
(that it should take eight days)
by the Holy One, blessed be He, through His Torah, because Chanukah must be eight days and eight lights,
therefore the Most High established the nature of creation in such a manner that it would take eight days to produce pure oil,
but were it not for this, the Most High would not have needed to create nature in such a manner,
He could have made it take seven days,
six days,
five days,
three days,
one day, and so forth!
Consequently, the question is reversed:
Why is Chanukah specifically eight days with eight lights,
and because of this the Most High established the way of nature in such a manner that the miracle of Chanukah should last specifically eight days?
And this is a question even if one has no special reason why Chanukah should be a specific number of days;
וואס דאס איז א קשיא אפילו אויב מ'האט ניט קיין טעם מיוחד פארוואס חנוכה זאל זיין א מספר מסויים של ימים 99;
all the more so when one has a strong reason that the Chanukah lights should be specifically in a specific number –
specifically seven lights, exactly like the lamps of the Temple
(in whose memory are the Chanukah lights) –
the question becomes even stronger:
Why are they eight,
could the Most High not have established the nature of creation in another manner,
in such a manner that it would take seven days to produce pure oil?
And especially since for this one need not resort to a special miracle –
because the entire matter
(the lighting for eight days)
was in any case a miracle –
"There was not enough [oil] to light for more than one day, a miracle occurred and they lit from it for eight days",
and also on the first day there was the miracle of the flask of oil
(as mentioned from the early authorities),
consequently, one need not resort to a special miracle that they should find pure oil for eight days,
and especially since one need not resort to such a great miracle to find oil in seven days instead of eight days!
So the explanation of this is:
It is explained in Chassidus
(in the Sefer HaMitzvos of the Tzemach Tzedek,
and in the discourses of our Rebbes and Nesiim before him and after him),
that the seven lamps of the Temple correspond to the seven shepherds and the eight Chanukah lights correspond to the eight princes of man.
That is:
Since in the root of matters the lamps of the Temple are connected with the seven shepherds –
Therefore this is expressed below in seven lamps;
דערפאר שטעלט זיך דאס אויס למטה אין שבעה נרות;
And since Chanukah
(in the root of matters)
is connected with the matter of the eight princes of man –
It is "a condition that the Holy One, blessed be He, made in the act of Creation" that when the time of Chanukah arrives, it should be established in a natural way
(from the place and from the olives, etc.)
that it should last eight days until pure oil could be produced,
As it is stated regarding the splitting of the Red Sea that when the Almighty created the sea,
the Holy One, blessed be He, made a condition with the sea in the act of Creation that it should split before the children of Israel.
This is also connected with what is stated in the Responsa of the Rashba and explained at length in Chassidus,
that the number seven indicates the seven days of the circuit,
for a complete circuit is expressed in seven
(days),
and eight is the guardian of the circuit.
And accordingly, this is also the difference between the seven lamps of the Temple and the eight lamps of Chanukah:
The lamps of the Temple
(in the root of matters)
are connected with the extension and revelation of the circuit of the order of the chain of descent,
which is expressed in the seven days of the circuit. Therefore this is reflected below in seven lamps.
However, the root of the miracle of Chanukah was from the aspect of the guardian of the circuit,
which is above the circuit
(time)
and above the order of the chain of descent,
therefore this is reflected below in eight lamps and eight days *106,
and therefore it was established in a natural way that at that time it should last eight days in order to find pure oil.
Accordingly, the nature of Chanukah, which is expressed in eight days, is also understood in relation to Passover and Sukkot, which are expressed in seven days:
The festivals of Passover and Sukkot are connected with a revelation of the aspect of the seven days of the circuit,
therefore they are
(according to Torah)
seven days,
the seven days of the circuit.
Chanukah is connected with a revelation of the aspect of the guardian of the circuit,
which is above time,
therefore it is eight days.
And accordingly, one will also understand the nature of the Shabbat of Chanukah in relation to the Shabbat during Passover and Sukkot
(even though also during Passover and Sukkot (which have seven days) there must be a Shabbat):
Shabbat is the seventh day
(and completion)
of the seven days of the circuit. And as explained in Chassidus,
that the seven days of the week are a complete circuit which includes the entire order of times,
and after the seventh day
(Shabbat)
the order of times begins anew –
the first day
(as we say in the Song of the Day –
"Today is the first day").
That is, Shabbat is primarily connected with the order of times –
the seven days of the circuit. From this it is also understood regarding the influence of Shabbat,
that it is primarily upon the seven days of the circuit:
Both the influence of Shabbat upon the preceding days in the manner of "and they were completed",
is primarily upon the six days before Shabbat,
and then comes the seventh day and the completion of the seven days of the circuit;
און דערנאך קומט דער יום השביעי ושלימות פון שבעת ימי ההיקף;
And also the influence of Shabbat upon the following days, that from it all the days are blessed, is primarily upon the six days after it
(which together with Shabbat, from it the days are blessed –
these are the seven days of the circuit).
[And even though it has been said several times,
that Shabbat also blesses the coming Shabbat –
one must bring proofs and explanations for this;
דארף מען דערצו אנקומען צו ראיות וביאורים;
but the primary matter of the blessing of Shabbat simply is –
upon the six days].
From this it is also understood regarding the Shabbat during Passover and Sukkot
(which are also connected with the revelation of the seven days of the circuit) –
that the influence of Shabbat upon the seven days of Passover and the seven days of Sukkot is always connected with a revelation of the order of the chain of descent,
the seven days of the circuit.
When it comes, however, to the Shabbat of Chanukah –
a novelty comes into this Shabbat
(in relation to the other Shabbats of the year, including the Shabbat during Passover and Sukkot):
Chanukah is eight days because it is connected with a revelation of above the order of the chain of descent
(above the seven days of the encompassing),
from the aspect of the Guardian of the encompassing. From this it is understood,
that it is not the simple meaning that only the eighth day of Chanukah is connected with the aspect of the Guardian of the encompassing
(which is above the order of the chain of descent),
rather all the days of Chanukah
(also the first seven days)
are
(not only from the aspect of the seven days of the encompassing, rather)
from the aspect that is above the encompassing,
therefore the entire festival is set as eight days.
Regarding this it is also understood concerning Shabbat Chanukah,
since it is a day of Chanukah whose essence is a revelation from above the seven days of the encompassing –
so also the Shabbat is in a more elevated manner
(than a regular Shabbat,
also a Shabbat during Pesach and Sukkot):
Every Shabbat from the six days of creation
(also a Shabbat during Pesach and Sukkot)
influences only upon seven days,
the seven days of the encompassing
(only in this itself does Shabbat bring perfection),
and after Shabbat a new order of times begins
(of the seven days of the encompassing).
But Shabbat Chanukah has the power to influence not only upon the seven days of the encompassing
(the order of times),
but also with the eighth day that guards the encompassing,
which is above time!
And in particular as it is openly emphasized in the determination of this year,
when Shabbat Chanukah is on the seventh day of Chanukah:
Then it comes out that with this Shabbat a complete encompassing of seven days is concluded,
and afterwards
(on the first day)
comes the eighth day of Chanukah. Whereas in another week the first day would not be connected with the previous seven days of the encompassing
(including Shabbat),
rather then a new order of times begins
(therefore it is called the first day);
(דערפאר הייסט עס יום ראשון);
However, in this year when this is also the eighth day of Chanukah
(since all eight days of Chanukah are connected with the aspect of the eight that guards the encompassing),
it demonstrates that this Shabbat Chanukah
(and all seven days of Chanukah,
the seven days of the encompassing)
is connected and influences
(not only upon the seven days of the encompassing,
but also)
upon the eighth day of Chanukah that guards the encompassing,
which is above the encompassing of time and the chain of descent.
And simply –
as one can explain it to a simple person:
The function of a regular Shabbat is –
that after the six days of work comes the seventh day when then it is "all your work is done" and I can use the free time for matters of holiness –
recite Tehillim,
learn "Ein Yaakov" and the like.
And the holiness of Shabbat influences upon the seven days of the encompassing.
The function of Shabbat Chanukah is even more:
It has the power to influence and bring perfection not only in the seven days of the week,
but in an additional day
(an eighth day)
which is outside of the seven days of the encompassing
(and ordinarily has no connection with this Shabbat and with the seven days of the encompassing that precede it).
Furthermore:
Because the days of Chanukah and Shabbat Chanukah are not bound by the limitations of the order of times
(the seven days of the encompassing)
rather they are connected with the aspect of the eighth that guards the encompassing,
which is above the order of times –
it is understood that it has even more power to be drawn down upon the entire year.
That is to say,
in addition to what one must say in general that the influences of the days of Chanukah are drawn down upon the entire year,
for Chanukah is "once a year",
and every matter of "once a year" is drawn down upon the entire year until that matter comes again in the following year when then one receives power to do it in a more elevated manner –
this stands even more emphasized in the days of Chanukah,
due to the fact that Chanukah is eight days which is connected with a revelation that is drawn down not only in the seven days of the encompassing,
but also above time,
in the aspect of the eight that guards the encompassing.
And the explanation of this is not only that the power and influence of Chanukah is a continuous effect upon the entire year,
but furthermore –
the very essence of Chanukah is drawn down upon the entire year.
Analogous to what was discussed many times the explanation of "May your springs spread forth outward",
that not only does one spread outward an extension from the "springs",
but the "springs" themselves are spread outward.
So too regarding Chanukah:
Not only does one receive an influence from Chanukah,
but Chanukah itself is drawn down upon the entire year.
And in the example, as this is during the days of Chanukah themselves:
It is understood and simple that the plain meaning is not that the festival of Chanukah is only the 50 minutes when the Chanukah lights are burning,
Rather, all of the eight periods of twenty-four hours are the days of Chanukah.
Similarly, this is also regarding the influence of the eight days of Chanukah
(from the aspect that is above the encompassing of time)
that Chanukah itself is drawn forth upon the entire year.
And this gives further strength that there should be "And Yehudah approached him." As it is also discussed in the Haftarah –
"One to the other they approach,"
And simply –
the approaching of one self to the other out of love of Israel,
until they become one reality of "A great multitude shall return here,"
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days and in the immediate future.
In connection with Shabbat Chanukah, there is the discourse of the Rebbe
(the Maharash)
of blessed memory from ninety years ago, beginning "The Chanukah light, it is a commandment to place it, etc.,"
which was printed recently,
and now we will review points from it.
For although the discourse in its foundation already exists in Torah Or of the Alter Rebbe and in the discourses of our Nesiim who followed him –
But because the discourse of the Rebbe of blessed memory was printed recently,
it has the advantage of a new thing which is more beloved in the nature of human beings than a thing which was already printed several years before this and is not a new thing. As the Mitteler Rebbe writes. And although he writes it with dissatisfaction,
nevertheless, in practice, this is the reality and nature in practice. And this is also a reality according to Torah –
as understood from the Torah commandment "In every day they shall be in your eyes as new,"
from which it is understood that a new thing has an advantage according to Torah.
And this is also a confirmation of a matter in actual deed –
that which in the most recent years they are publicizing and printing new discourses and new books which until now they had not printed.
Seemingly, one can ask a question on the entire conduct:
It is known the caution that one must have and that one always had in publicizing and printing Torah in general,
and in particular –
the inner dimensions of Torah. And in particular when it concerns discourses that the Rebbes themselves did not print in their time,
like the aforementioned discourse from ninety years ago,
which this itself
(that they did not print them)
is also with Divine Providence which pertains to the primordial thought there.
A storm arises:
After the many years that they did not print all these discourses with Divine Providence –
Why are they now suddenly rushing to print them all and that they should remain for generations?!
After all, many years have passed in which they did not print them,
which proves that they did not need to print them
(for everything is with Divine Providence as above),
and this proves that they are
(perhaps)
a part of the king's treasures "precious wealth gathered and collected over many years from generation to generation and which was never used for anything,
and hidden and sealed from the eye of every beholder"
(as explained in the discourses of the passing),
that is to say, not only does he not give them to anyone,
rather, he does not show them to anyone,
and even if a Rebbe once revealed and said the discourse –
this is perhaps a revelation only according to the need of the hour,
and afterwards it must remain hidden!
For example, the discourse of Shabbat Chanukah from ninety years ago –
perhaps this is a discourse that the Rebbe of blessed memory revealed only for the year 5636,
and the proof –
that since then has already passed
(approximately)
89 years and they did not print it and publicize it.
And similarly regarding all the other discourses that they did not print.
Today, what "pushes" that they should now suddenly publicize new discourses and print new books?!
And even though in such a case one has the parable of the old Rebbe, "A son of a king who fell ill with a severe illness, and the doctors said that there is no remedy for his affliction except through a segulah of grinding precious stones and drinking from those waters, etc.,
And it was found that in the king's crown there is one stone that has no equal in the crowns of kings, and that stone has the segulah to heal the illness of the king's son, etc.,
But in the meantime the condition of the king's son deteriorated so much that the doctors said that if they pour the healing water into his mouth, it is doubtful whether he will receive it, and the precious stone from the king's crown will be lost without any benefit,
And the king answered and said,
Precious is the crown of royalty, etc., and the precious stone is the diadem of the crown that crowns it,
But all this is as nothing and naught compared to the essence and selfhood of the king's son, for whom it is worthwhile to grind the precious stone even on the chance,
Lest perhaps one drop will reach into the mouth of the king's son and he will be healed from his illness."
And that this is a rationale also for that which one should now print the maamarim that until now have remained concealed in the treasures of the king –
But this is seemingly still not sufficient,
Because hundreds and thousands of Chassidus maamarim have already been printed,
That is, thousands of "precious stones" have already been ground
(from the king's crown) –
Why then is it necessary to add printing additional new maamarim?
The answer to this is:
When one prints new maamarim,
That until now have not been printed and publicized –
One sees in human nature that he has for this a greater fondness and preciousness than he has for maamarim that have already been printed long ago. And especially when he sees that all these years one did not have this maamar,
And it is already 89 years
(for example)
Since the Rebbe, of blessed memory, said this maamar and since then the maamar has remained hidden in the treasures of the king,
And nevertheless it has now been printed and it has now been given into his hand –
This is for him a precious thing!
And since it is possible that there is one who, except for a new maamar, will not study a maamar in Torah Ohr and the like –
Therefore it is worthwhile even on the chance that one should print all these new maamarim that until now have not been printed
(even though there is already a multitude of maamarim from before),
Perhaps it will bring even one Jew to study this new maamar, seeking there a matter of novelty, etc.!
This is still, however, on the chance –
Perhaps someone will possibly study this new maamar;
טאמער איינער וועט אפשר לערנען דעם מאמר חדש;
But who has the power to resolve this doubt and confirm –
It is not the printer and publisher,
Rather, everyone who will purchase this new book and study in it in actuality,
He will prove that it was worthwhile to print the new books and new maamarim,
And this will cause that one should print and publicize additional new maamarim.
On the other hand, however, one must know,
That the evil inclination has nothing to come and persuade a Jew that he should not study with the hope
(of the evil inclination)
That through this one will not further print books –
Because it will not help him in any case,
For even if one will not study in it, one will continue to print,
Consequently, the evil inclination has from the outset nothing to come and confuse a Jew that he should not study,
Because this will not stop the printing! And on the contrary –
"As they afflicted him, so he multiplied and so he spread"! Until in this matter there will remain no place for the evil inclination!
Accordingly
[Since the benefit of printing the new maamarim so that one should study in them in actuality does not lie in the hands of the publisher,
Or in the hands of the students of the book,
And on the contrary –
One will print even if one will not study in it]
There still remains, however, the question regarding that which is called printing the books –
From where does one take the responsibility for this,
After the maamarim have remained hidden all these years?
The answer to this is –
And this is also founded upon Chassidus:
Since the matter of printing the books was entrusted to someone who it is known that his nature is to print and publicize everything that comes to his hand,
and to such an extent that there is no doubt that the evil inclination could involve itself in this and prevent him from printing the matters,
[and would that the evil inclination had no control in other matters as it has no control in this matter...],
and it was seen in practice that he already became "ensnared" in this so many times
(if one can call this an ensnarement...),
then one certainly understood that also from now and onward he will continue to become "ensnared" in this and his good inclination will compel him
(at least in my opinion this is from the side of the good inclination)
to print everything that comes under his hand,
and nevertheless it was left in his possession –
it is a certain thing that one agrees to this!
And since such is the reality –
this completely nullifies the evil inclination in this matter,
knowing that it has absolutely nothing to latch onto and attempt to hold back the printing of the books,
because this will not help it anyway,
consequently it must go seek somewhere else something to do...
And regarding the practical aspect it is understandable,
since the new discourses were actually printed –
this is certainly by Divine Providence and one must study them.
As this is in all matters of Judaism:
before a Jew performs a thing –
as long as he has not done it,
there can be a doubt as to how he should act;
קען זיין א ספק ווי ער דארף טאן;
but after the deed has been done,
and in our case –
after the new books were actually printed –
this is certainly by Divine Providence,
and "this too is for the good",
and at any rate "whatever the Merciful One does, He does for good",
consequently one must certainly utilize this to purchase the books with the new discourses,
and not only so that they should remain lying on the shelf and from time to time he wipes the "dust" off them,
but rather so that one should actually study the new discourses in them!
The evil inclination comes to a fool –
for since the evil inclination sees that it cannot effect anything regarding the actual printing of the books
(as above)
it seeks where it can do something,
it finds a fool,
and persuades him:
Why must he study the first newly-printed discourse of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden, from Shabbat Chanukah ninety years ago
(and the like) –
when he can take it from the "source" itself from which the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden, took it –
the discourse of the old Rebbe in Torah Or!...
And he
און ער
(so he thinks)
can certainly study the discourse in Torah Or more deeply than everyone and extract from there all the novellae –
so why does he need to come to the discourse of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden....
And even when one tells him that in this discourse of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden, there are deeper matters and novellae that he cannot extract from Torah Or on his own –
he argues,
that he sees there no novellae! –
thus it settles in his mind...
Nu! Even if you see there no novellae –
why does it not behoove you to review the discourse from Torah Or in the style of the Rebbe, may his soul rest in Eden, instead of the style of the old Rebbe?!
And furthermore, the main point:
From where do you know that there are no novellae there?!
Since you have not toiled in the discourse,
there is a rule that "if I have not toiled and I found, do not believe",
this does not hold even from the perspective of faith
("do not believe")
all the more so not in intellect –
so from where do you know that there are no novellae there?!
Toil in the discourse –
you will find novellae!
And in particular, since this discourse has the quality of a new thing –
because the discourse was printed for the first time specifically in the most recent years, and until then he did not have the discourse –
this must have for him a special endearment and preciousness. Knowing that since the Rebbe, of blessed memory, said the discourse ninety years ago,
already eighty-nine years have passed
(approximately)
and it was not printed,
and now it was printed for him and he has the ability to study it and become unified with the intellect of the Rebbe, of blessed memory, exactly as it was at the time of the delivery of the discourse ninety years ago,
For whoever reads and reviews, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him,
therefore, "just as there [it is] with awe, with fear, with trembling, and with perspiration, so too here [it is] with awe, with fear, with trembling, and with perspiration,"
and so it is regarding this matter –
since the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him at the time he studies the discourse,
this is "with awe and with fear, etc." exactly as at the time when the discourse was heard and studied in the year 5636 [1896]!
And there is no need to elaborate on this,
and especially since it is the Sabbath day –
one must not then trouble Jews. And as discussed multiple times, this is one of the reasons why one studies primarily the inner dimension of the Torah on Shabbat –
because in the inner dimension of the Torah, "there is no difficulty, etc., and no dispute, etc."
[as in the example of the Talmud Yerushalmi],
therefore one studies it on the Sabbath day when one does not need to have any trouble from difficulties, etc.
And after the above discussion regarding the quality of this discourse of the Rebbe, of blessed memory, on Shabbat Chanukah from ninety years ago –
the quality of a new thing which is more beloved –
we will now review points from the discourse.
Discourse (like a talk)
Beginning with the words "The Chanukah light, it is a commandment to place it, etc."
It is also customary to explain a matter from the weekly Torah portion in connection with Rashi –
a matter that Rashi explains,
or a matter that Rashi seemingly should have explained because it requires an explanation in the plain meaning of the verse;
אדער אן ענין וואס רש"י האט לכאורה געדארפט מפרש זיין וויבאלד אז דאס דארף האבן א ביאור אין פשוטו של מקרא;
a matter from the notes of my father on the Zohar of our Torah portion;
אן ענין אין די הערות פון טאטן אויפן זהר דפרשתנו;
and a matter from the daily study session in the Rambam,
as is the custom in recent years.
Regarding Rashi:
Regarding what Joseph argued to his brothers
(at the time they came to Egypt "to break bread" [to buy grain]),
"You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land" –
the tribes answered, "No, my lord,
and your servants have come to break bread [buy grain]."
Upon this, Rashi comes and explains:
"No, my lord –
you shall not say so, for behold, your servants have come to break bread [buy grain]."
One must understand:
The explanation of the verse is seemingly straightforward:
To Joseph's claim, "You are spies," the tribes answered –
"No, my lord,"
we are not spies as you say,
"and your servants have come to break bread [buy grain]" –
rather, we,
your servants,
have come to break bread [buy grain].
Nevertheless
(although the explanation of the verse is straightforward)
Rashi comes
(whose purpose is to explain the plain meaning of the verse)
and says upon this an explanation which removes the verse from its aforementioned plain meaning:
"No, my lord –
you shall not say so, for behold, your servants have come to break bread [buy grain]":
The plain explanation of the verse is,
that to Joseph's claim, "You are spies," the tribes answer that it is not so
("No, my lord");
("לא אדוני");
Rashi, however, explains that this does not mean they are answering his claim up to now –
rather, from now onward, "you shall not say so."
That is, that until now he could have argued thus
(that "you are spies"),
but now,
from now onward,
"you shall not say so." Why "you shall not say so"? –
"for behold, your servants have come to break bread [buy grain]."
That is, that until now you could have argued thus
(that "you are spies")
because you did not know that "your servants have come to break bread [buy grain],"
but now,
from now onward,
"you shall not say so,"
because now we are explaining to you that "your servants have come to break bread [buy grain]" and did not come as spies.
It is entirely incomprehensible:
a) What compels Rashi to remove the verse from its plain meaning? b) With what [logic] that the tribes explained to Joseph that "your servants have come to break bread [buy grain]" therefore "you shall not say so" –
the tribes thereby innovated nothing,
because even before Joseph's claim that "you are spies," the tribes had told him that they had come "from the land of Canaan to break bread [buy grain]."
It is not understood:
How can one say that the tribes said to Joseph that until now you could possibly argue that "you are spies,"
but now,
when you hear that "your servants have come to buy food" you cannot say so
("you shall not say thus") –
Joseph already knew from before from their saying,
that they come "to buy food" and nevertheless he argued "you are spies,"
so what does it help that the tribes repeat it now?!
All commentators address this Rashi
(the Ra"am,
the Gur Aryeh,
the Siftei Chachamim)
and with an extended explanation –
but with due respect,
after all the elaboration it is difficult to learn how this fits with the plain meaning of Scripture!
(Since time is limited we will not repeat what they say,
but each one in its time and season can look there and offer insight on this etc.).
Another thing that is not understandable in the plain meaning of Scripture –
and nevertheless Rashi does not address it:
When a child of five studying Scripture learns the verses about Joseph's claim "you are spies" and the response of the tribes "no, my lord, and your servants have come to buy food"
("you shall not say thus, for your servants have come to buy food") –
he can ask a "blatant question":
Why did the tribes not answer Joseph with the simplest proof that they are not spies:
The child of five studying Scripture knows that when one sends a spy to a foreign country to spy there,
the first and most important condition –
is that it be in secret. One sends stealthily a person whom no one will suspect and he goes stealthily to the place where he needs to find out something,
and he endeavors to carry out his mission with the least possible publicity,
he goes when no one sees him etc.
Because if he goes with a commotion and publicity he will surely be caught –
which is the opposite of the entire purpose of his mission.
From this it is understandable,
that when one sends a spy one endeavors to send only one person alone,
because then it is not at all conspicuous.
However, if one sends two people and all the more so more than that,
and all the more so ten people –
this is more conspicuous and there is more suspicion that they will be caught.
As the child of five understands regarding himself:
When he and his friends want to steal the afikoman on Passover,
or steal the teacher's whip –
they will not go ten students at once to the place where the whip lies,
because then the teacher will immediately catch on to what is happening. Rather, they will send one child and send him stealthily,
so that when the teacher is not looking,
he will snatch the whip!
Thus the question arises on the tribes:
Why did the tribes not answer Joseph that it cannot be that they are spies –
because no one would ever send as spies ten brothers together,
for this is a most conspicuous thing and they would certainly be caught. Especially such ten people who are "all handsome and all mighty" –
a most conspicuous thing. Consequently, from this very fact that they are ten people together is a proof that they are not spies.
However, if they came "to buy food" it is understandable why ten people came –
because they are many people with large families,
consequently they need to bring back much food,
therefore ten people came to be able to take the abundance of food!
Now:
Why did the tribes not answer with the simplest excuse to Joseph's claim,
and why does Rashi not address it?
And as will be explained below.
In the notes of my father on the Zohar he addresses the two interpretations in the Zohar on the matter of "My ways are ways of pleasantness,"
and he explains in his manner the precise nuances of the language according to Kabbalah and in the Sefirot etc.,
but he does not explain how the matter is in the service of man.
In the Zohar, two interpretations are brought there in "Darkei Noam."
[In the heading of the father's note, only a part of the Zohar was copied]:
A) "This Noam is the pleasantness that emanates from the World to Come." B) "Another explanation,
the World to Come is called Noam,
and when the World to Come is aroused, all joy and all goodness and all lights and all delight of the world are aroused,
and therefore it is called Noam."
That is:
According to the first interpretation, "Noam" is an effluence that comes out from the World to Come
(the World to Come),
in contrast to the second interpretation,
"Noam" is the level of the World to Come itself.
According to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that from every thing one must derive a lesson in the service of God,
one must understand what is the lesson in the service of God from the interpretations in the Zohar,
and especially since according to both interpretations in the Zohar, it speaks about the World to Come,
which is "tomorrow in the World to Come to receive their reward" –
and according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov, one must have a lesson from this now in "today to do them."
And as will be explained below.
Here is the place to continue the matter in Rashi of last Shabbat:
Last time we stood on Rashi's commentary in Parshat Vayeishev regarding the four hands that appear at the birth of Zerach:
"Four hands are written here corresponding to the four confiscated items that Achan, who descended from him, misappropriated,
and some say corresponding to the four items that he took: a cloak of Shinar and two pieces of silver of two hundred shekels and a tongue of gold."
And we asked:
According to the rule that "the memory of a righteous person is for a blessing," how does it fit to mention an undesirable matter in connection with Zerach, who was a righteous person
(as Rashi explains)?
And due to the shortness of time, it was not answered last time.
[According to "Yeinah shel Torah" on Rashi, one can explain Rashi's language "corresponding to the four confiscated items that Achan, who descended from him, misappropriated" in the manner that Chassidus *145 explains the language "Abraham, from whom Ishmael descended,"
"Isaac, from whom Esau descended,"
that Ishmael "descended" and separated from Abraham (before he repented),
and likewise Esau from Isaac,
because Isaac and Abraham have no relation to the undesirable matters of Ishmael and Esau.
And likewise one can explain "Achan, who descended from him"*].
We stood on this in the booklets *146 and we began to answer it according to an explanation in a "note" from what was once discussed regarding this matter.
Last time we discussed,
that when one learns the verses about the birth of Peretz and Zerach,
one sees that the birth was in a strange manner, not at all in the usual way:
"And it came to pass in her labor, that he put out a hand, and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This one came out first.
And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out, etc.,
and after that came out his brother, on whose hand was the scarlet thread."
The question arises in the simple meaning of the verse –
why was the birth in an unusual manner?
It is understandable regarding the birth of Esau and Jacob that it was in an unusual manner,
"and after that came out his brother, and his hand was holding on to the heel of Esau,"
and before this –
"and the children struggled together within her" –
because there was "one righteous and one wicked,"
and "his hand was holding on to the heel of Esau,"
because "Jacob came to delay him so that he would be first in birth, first in formation, and would open the womb and take the birthright by law";
ווייל "יעקב בא לעכבו שיהא ראשון ללידה בראשון ליצירה ויפטור את רחמה ויטול את הבכורה מן הדין" 152;
but Peretz and Zerach "both are righteous,"
so why was there such an unusual birth,
that one wanted to come out first and stuck out his hand, and in practice the second came out, etc.?
Therefore Rashi explains that with this, that the verse tells about the unusual birth and mentions in connection with it "four hands," the verse alludes to the great-grandson of Zerach who would conduct himself improperly –
"Four hands are written here corresponding to the four confiscated items that Achan, who descended from him, misappropriated,
and some say corresponding to the four items that he took: a cloak of Shinar and two pieces of silver of two hundred shekels and a tongue of gold."
Up to here is from the "note" that was once discussed,
as brought down in one of the booklets.
The explanation, however, is only a beginning of the answer,
because one still needs to understand:
The aforementioned explanation only answers why Rashi mentions an undesirable matter that is alluded to at the birth of Zerach;
דער ביאור הנ"ל פארענטפערט נאר פארוואס רש"י דערמאנט אן ענין בלתי רצוי וואס איז מרומז ביי לידת זרח'ן;
This, however, does not answer why the verse alludes specifically at the birth of Zerach to his great-great-grandson who would conduct himself improperly:
The Torah tells about the birth of many righteous individuals who had grandchildren who were improper,
for example –
Chanoch,
Methuselah,
Noach, etc. –
and nevertheless the Torah does not allude to this at the time of their birth. Now why is it alluded to specifically at Zerach,
who was a righteous person?!
The question becomes even stronger:
Yaakov explicitly was particular that his name should not be mentioned together with that of a great-great-grandson who was a wicked person –
as it is stated in Parshat Vayechi that Yaakov said, "In their assembly let my honor not be united,"
"He sought mercy that his name should not be mentioned in connection with their dispute"
(the dispute of Korach).
Now, since Yaakov was particular about this –
how is it that Achan the wicked is mentioned together with Zerach the righteous,
when Zerach would certainly have been particular about this
(just as Yaakov, his grandfather, was particular)?!
That is to say:
Even if we find an explanation regarding Chanoch, Methuselah, and Noach, etc.,
the question remains why it is alluded to at Zerach,
a grandson of Yaakov,
who certainly was particular about this*?
Also, one must understand in this Rashi:
A) Since Rashi explains only the "four hands are written here" –
why does he quote from the verse
(not only the word "his hand," but)
also the word "the second"
("which is on his second hand"),
and as discussed many times, did Rashi himself also write the opening words?
B) In the two explanations in Rashi, one sees a contradiction:
In the first explanation Rashi writes, "Corresponding to the four bans that came from Achan who descended from him,"
and he does not enumerate which four bans.
However, in the second explanation Rashi writes, "Corresponding to the four items that he took,"
and he is not satisfied with this, but he continues and enumerates which four items:
"A mantle of Shinar,
and two pieces of silver of two hundred shekels,
and a wedge of gold."
So, whichever way one looks at it:
If the simple interpretation compels one to enumerate the four items –
why does Rashi not specify them also in the first explanation;
פארוואס איז עס רש"י ניט מפרט אויך אין דעם ערשטן פירוש;
and if it is not necessary to specify them
(as Rashi does not specify them in his first explanation) –
why does he specify them in the second explanation?!
Superficially, one could answer,
that Rashi specifies only regarding the four items
(and not regarding the four bans) –
because when the five-year-old grows older and will study in the Prophets about Achan,
he will see there that simply Achan took only three items
(a mantle of Shinar,
silver, and a wedge of gold),
and in order to explain to him then why Rashi wrote here "four items that he took,"
he specifies what these items were:
The first item –
"a mantle of Shinar." The second item – silver,
but there were "two pieces of silver of two hundred shekels,"
consequently it is counted as two items,
and the fourth item –
"a wedge of gold."
One cannot, however, answer in this way –
because regarding what Rashi writes "four bans," there is an even greater difficulty:
In the Midrash before us it indeed states that there were "four bans,"
but in the Gemara there are two opinions, "three bans" or "five bans"
[The five-year-old does not know what is stated in the Gemara,
but Rashi certainly knows of it]
and since what Rashi writes "four bans" is not a straightforward matter –
Rashi certainly should have specified the four bans,
all the more so from the fact that he specifies the "four items"?!
And as will be explained in the continuation of the time.
The question on the language of the verse in Parsha Vayishlach "And Dinah the daughter of Leah went out... to see the daughters of the land" has still not been answered:
Since the event happened in the city of Shechem,
it should have said "daughters of the city"
(it cannot say "daughters of Shechem",
because then one could think that this means the daughters of the man Shechem,
it should have said "daughters of the city"],
as it says later on,
because how does "daughters of the land" fit in here,
daughters of the entire land?
The explanation of this is understood from the very thing that Rashi writes in explaining the reason why Dinah is called here "the daughter of Leah" –
"Because of her going out she is called the daughter of Leah, for she too was a goer-out, etc. And they applied the proverb to her: like mother, like daughter":
From the words of Rashi it is understood that Dinah's going out
("And Dinah went out")
was due to the special traits that Dinah had inherited from her mother
("like mother, like daughter")
who "was a goer-out."
That is, that Dinah had the trait of a "goer-out" more than is usual for another child.
This compels one to say that Dinah's going out was not merely "to see the daughters of the city",
but "the daughters of the land" –
because:
By nature, every child goes out of his house and meets with other children. As a five-year-old studying Scripture sees in himself:
When he goes to and from cheder,
he meets on the street with other children of the city and speaks with them, etc.
Moreover:
The trait of every child is not to remain locked in the house the entire day,
but to go out and meet with other children of his age and play with them. On the contrary:
If a child wants to remain locked in the house and not go out to meet with other children –
this is not considered a normal thing and one seeks advice for this, etc.!
Therefore, it is understood that if one will say that upon arriving in the city of Shechem
(or near the city)
Dinah went out "to see the daughters of the city" –
this is no novelty and one cannot say about this that she had a special trait of a "goer-out",
because this is the trait of every child by nature,
that when one arrives in a city,
the child goes out of the house to see the other children in the city;
גייט ארויס דער קינד פון שטוב זיך צו זען מיט די אנדערע קינדער אין שטאט;
Since one says that Dinah had inherited from her mother an outstanding trait of a "goer-out" –
it is understood that she went out not merely "to see the daughters of the city",
but "to see the daughters of the land",
which proves that she went out not like any ordinary child,
but that she was distinguished by the fact that she was a "goer-out"
(more than is usual),
to such an extent that she went out "to see the daughters of the land."
And at the time of "And Shechem the son of Hamor saw her" that she is a "goer-out" not in the usual way,
and she moves about not only in the city but in the entire land,
"to see the daughters of the land" –
the incident that later happened came about.
In the Midrash it says that "the daughter of Jacob was sitting in tents and did not go outside,
what did Shechem the son of Hamor do? He brought playing girls outside to her, drumming with drums,
Dinah went out to see the playing girls, etc." –
But this is only according to the homiletic interpretation,
but according to the simple interpretation this is the opposite of the simple meaning,
because Rashi writes on "And Dinah went out" that she was a "goer-out" like her mother Leah,
that is, simply that she, of her own accord
(due to her traits)
went out "to see the daughters of the land."
In today's lesson of Rambam, one learns about the laws concerning one who embarrasses a Torah scholar.
In this, one finds a matter that is similar to what one finds in the laws of Chanukah
(when one learns this lesson in Rambam in this year):
It is known the novelty that one finds in the law regarding the Chanukah lights:
There is a dispute between Tosafos and the Rambam in the interpretation of "mehadrin min hamehadrin":
According to Tosafos, it means only that one adds to the Chanukah lights day by day,
but all the members of the household have only one menorah
(not "a light for each and every one").
However, the Rambam holds that "mehadrin min hamehadrin" means "a light for each and every one" and each of them adds day by day.
And in practical halachah, one sees a novelty in this:
"That the Sephardim follow the Tosafot, etc.
[as the Beit Yosef (a Sephardi) rules]
and the Ashkenazim follow the Rambam
[as the Rema (an Ashkenazi) rules],
and this is not found in other places."
And regarding this, and as an example, one also finds in connection with the present-day measure of the Rambam:
The Rambam rules
(in the present-day measure):
"If one shames a Torah scholar, he is obligated to pay him full compensation for embarrassment, even though he shamed him only with words. The law has already been decided that anyone who shames a Torah scholar, even with words, we penalize him and collect from him a weight of thirty-five gold dinars, etc."
And the source of the words of the Rambam is from the Yerushalmi:
"A certain person insulted Rabbi Yehuda bar Chanina,
the matter came before Reish Lakish, and he penalized him a litra of gold."
Afterwards, the Rambam adds:
"And it is a tradition in our hands that this penalty is collected in every place, whether in the Land [of Israel] or outside the Land." And he continues:
"There were always such incidents among us in Spain, etc. The judges would say to the one who shamed: You are obligated to give him a litra of gold."
And this is a novelty:
In general, the law regarding penal laws
[like the penalty of four or five,
and like the penalties found in the laws of slaves,
etc.]
is that "they are judged only by three experts, and they are the ordained ones in the Land of Israel,"
which is the difference between a penalty and a fine:
A monetary fine is assessed according to the one who shames and the one who is shamed.
However, a penalty is a fixed penalty for everyone,
in our case –
a litra of gold.
Nevertheless, here the Rambam rules that regarding the penalty of a litra of gold for one who shames a Torah scholar –
"this penalty is collected in every place, whether in the Land [of Israel] or outside the Land,"
and thus they conducted themselves in the land of Spain, that they obligated the one who shamed to [pay] a litra of gold.
However, there are other poskim –
the Maharik,
an Ashkenazi
(and others)
–
174 –
who indeed rule that in the present time we do not penalize [with] a litra of gold.
And in this, one finds an example as in Chanukah,
that the Beit Yosef
(a Sephardi)
in his Shulchan Aruch in the laws of honoring a Torah scholar does not rule like the Rambam
(a Sephardi)
but rather like the Maharik
(an Ashkenazi):
In the commentary of the Beit Yosef on the Tur, he brings both the opinion of the Rambam and the opinion of the Maharik,
but in his Shulchan Aruch he does not bring [anything] regarding this law of penalty
(only regarding the law of excommunication),
from which it is understood that he rules that one is not obligated to [pay] a penalty
(as the Rema explains there),
that is, not like the Rambam but like the Maharik.
And the Rema
(an Ashkenazi)
indeed also rules
(like the Maharik),
that "there is no law of a Torah scholar in the present time regarding the one who shames giving him a litra of gold." But afterwards he adds –
and with this his approach is closer to the approach of the Rambam
(even though he was an Ashkenazi) –
"Nevertheless, the court shall penalize the one who shames according to the one who shames and the one who is shamed."
And one should connect this matter of shaming a Torah scholar with the matter of Chanukah –
in the content of the matters:
It is explained in Chassidic discourses that the main opposition of the Greeks was "to cause them to forget Your Torah and to make them transgress the statutes of Your will":
Their opposition was not to the very concept of Torah and mitzvot. They themselves were wise and recognized the wisdom of the Torah –
"It is your wisdom and understanding in the eyes of the nations." However, they wanted the Jews to study the Torah only from the aspect of its wisdom,
but not as "Your Torah,"
the Torah of the Supreme One.
And likewise regarding "the statutes of Your will":
Being wise, they knew that one must have statutes of the state so that there should not be "a man swallowing his fellow alive,"
but rather that it should be "to settle it."
That is, that according to reason it is necessary that there be statutes. They wanted the Jews to keep the statutes,
but only from the aspect that this is what reason dictates,
not from the aspect that they are "the statutes of Your will,"
because the Supreme One commanded thus.
And likewise regarding the seven mitzvot of the children of Noach:
They wanted them to be fulfilled because reason dictates so from the aspect of "to settle it,"
not "because the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded them in the Torah and made them known to us through Moshe Rabbeinu."
It comes out,
that the victory of Chanukah against the Greeks consisted in that which one strengthened the matter of fear of Heaven –
the connection of Torah and commandments with the Supreme One,
that one learns Torah and fulfills commandments not because it is so according to intellect,
but because they are "Your Torah" and "the statutes of Your will,"
Torah and commandments from the Supreme One.
Which this is also the reason for the laws in connection with shaming a Torah scholar:
the importance of a Torah scholar,
because of which one may not shame him,
is due to that which he learns Torah out of fear of Heaven,
because it is "Your Torah,"
the Torah of G-d. If he learns Torah only due to its wisdom,
but not because this is "Your Torah," he does not have the law of a Torah scholar whom one may not shame,
but the conduct with him must be exactly the opposite!
The matter of Chanukah which is connected with Torah and commandments out of fear of Heaven –
also has a connection with the dedication of the house,
the dedication of the "Minor Sanctuary"
(which is similar to the matter of "Chanukah" which is so called on account of the dedication of the Holy Temple)
and the other farbrengens and "dinners" which take place in the coming days –
a dedication of the house and farbrengens and gatherings which are permeated with the matter of fear of Heaven.
And in order to include all those present here with the dedication of the house and with the other "dinners" and farbrengens –
one will give drink from the farbrengen for these matters,
and a part thereof should be distributed here in order to include those present here
(in addition to the reason due to the laws of Shabbat),
and the remainder –
will be distributed at the gatherings. And in addition, one should also announce regarding the time and place of the gatherings.
And may it be His will that all these gatherings be with great and extraordinary success without limit and with utmost perfection,
especially in fulfilling the matters of spreading the Torah and the commandments and the wellsprings outward,
and in a manner of going and adding and light.
And this,
among the other matters of our deeds and our service,
will further hasten the true perfection in the true and complete redemption,
when one will have perfection in all matters:
perfection of the people –
"with our youths and with our elders, with our sons and with our daughters,"
one goes in an instant,
in a manner of "I will hasten it,"
in the Land of Israel,
perfection of the land,
"a land which the eyes of the L-rd your G-d are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year,"
perfection of the Torah and the commandments –
"their silver and their gold with them" –
love and fear which include all matters of Torah and commandments,
which will add further in the perfection of the land until in a manner of "the L-rd your G-d will expand your border,"
in the true and complete redemption, speedily in our days, literally.

The point of the resolution in Rashi in our portion
(since one must think about the time of the afternoon prayer,
at least with difficulty) –
and such a resolution which proves that the questions which were asked earlier have no place from the outset:
Earlier one asked why did the tribes not answer the simplest resolution
(to Joseph's claim "you are spies"),
that it cannot be that they are spies –
because who would send as spies ten brothers together,
which is the greatest publicity that could possibly be?!
So the "answer" to this –
is that they indeed answered thus! As it is stated in the verse after this:
"All of us are sons of one man, we are honest, your servants are not spies,"
as follows.
And this is indeed what Rashi explains in his commentary on the words of the tribes "you shall not say so, for behold, your servants have come to buy food":
It is plausible to say that in Rashi's manuscript there stood at the end of the commentary
(after the words "for your servants have come to buy food")
the words
(from the verse of "Shelach")
"We are all sons of one man",
only when the copyist saw that in Rashi's manuscript the same words stand
("We are all sons of one man")
twice,
once at the end of the commentary of "Miketz",
and the second time as the opening words of the verse of "Shelach" –
he thought that it is an error and removed the words from the second instance.
And according to this, Rashi's words are entirely smooth:
Rashi explains that the tribes answered
(to Joseph's accusation "you are spies") –
"You shall not say so, for your servants have come to buy food; we are all sons of one man":
The tribes thought,
since Joseph accused them that "you are spies" even though they told him
(in response to his question "from where do you come")
that they came from the land of Canaan "to buy food",
he thinks that they all came separately,
because they entered the city through separate gates,
therefore he suspects them that they are spies;
דערפאר איז ער זיי חושד אז זיי זיינען מרגלים;
Therefore they answered him "You shall not say so
(from now on) for
(simply that)
your servants have come to buy food, (for)
we are all sons of one man":
It is not as you think that we are separate, foreign individuals one to another,
but "we are all sons of one man",
we are all brothers from one father and we came together. Consequently you have no reason to suspect us as spies,
because no one would send ten brothers all at once as spies.
And in addition to this:
A spy
(a "spy")
must have special qualities which are found very rarely among average people. He must have a quality of a person who can conceal over a long period of time his true identity,
from where he originates, etc.,
and he must be able to travel to a foreign country that has different customs than the customs of his country, etc.
These are qualities that are found very rarely in people.
Consequently the tribes argued to Joseph:
"We are all sons of one man",
we were all educated by the same father,
consequently it is entirely implausible to say that all ten brothers have the qualities of spies!
The lesson in divine service from the two interpretations in the Zohar in "Darchei Noam":
The concept of the World to Come
(the World that is Coming)
in divine service in relation to this world –
is analogous to the concept of Torah in relation to commandments:
Between Torah and commandments themselves, commandments are analogous to the concept of this world and Torah is analogous to the concept of the World to Come –
because the fulfillment of commandments is primarily in "today to do them",
primarily in this world, and
(the perfection of)
Torah will primarily be in the World to Come,
in the future,
when there will be the study of the Torah of the Messiah,
the essence of the perfection of Torah.
And also in this world
(in the present time)
itself, commandments are connected primarily with the physicality of the world, unlike Torah which is akin to the concept of the World to Come –
as our Sages said, "Torah was not given except to eaters of the manna",
for the eaters of the manna had no confusions of this world –
because they stood on a level that is akin to the World to Come,
above this world.
And as the words of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
for whom "his Torah was his occupation",
"a person plows, etc., and sows, etc., what will become of Torah?",
meaning that the perfection of Torah study is when the Torah student stands above the matters of this world
(plowing and sowing),
he stands on a level that is akin to the World to Come
(where there are no physical confusions of plowing and sowing, etc.).
And the explanation of this:
When a Jew studies Torah, he becomes connected with the Most High,
and as our Sages said, "whoever reads and reviews Torah, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him",
until through the study of Torah he becomes one thing with the Most High with a "wondrous unity that no unity is like it nor is any comparable to it found at all",
until –
"Israel, Torah, and the Holy One, blessed be He, are all one".
From this it is understood that when a Jew studies Torah, he stands entirely above the world
(this world) –
he stands on the level of the World to Come –
"Israel, Torah, and the Holy One, blessed be He, are all one".
And simply:
When one studies Torah in the study hall, one stands above the world,
one stands on a level of the World to Come.
Only afterwards, when one goes from "the study hall" to "conduct yourself with them in the way of the world" –
one goes out of the study hall which is above the world and one enters into this world,
into the conduct of "conduct yourself with them in the way of the world."
All the more so with one whose "Torah is his craft" –
the entire day he stands above the world.
And based on this it is understood why it is written about Torah "its ways are ways of pleasantness" –
according to the explanation of the Zohar that "pleasantness" is connected to "the World to Come"
[according to the first explanation:
"This pleasantness is the pleasantness that issues from the World to Come." And according to the second explanation:
"The World to Come is called pleasantness") –
because the perfection of Torah will be in the World to Come,
and also now Torah is of the nature of the World to Come.
And in this "its ways are ways of pleasantness" of Torah itself there are two levels:
A) "This pleasantness is the pleasantness that issues from the World to Come,
and from the World to Come all lamps illuminate and spread to every side, and that goodness and that light of the World to Come which the Patriarchs draw is called pleasantness."
That is, that the ways that are drawn from Torah
("its ways")
are "ways of pleasantness." B) "The World to Come is called pleasantness,
and when the World to Come is aroused, all joy and all goodness and all lights and all delight of the world are aroused,
and therefore it is called pleasantness."
That is, that the ways of Torah
("its ways")
are ways that are drawn from the aspect of "pleasantness."
And the difference between these two explanations in the service of man:
In the study of Torah itself
(which "its ways are ways of pleasantness" –
the aspect of the World to Come)
there are levels:
There is a lower manner in the study of Torah where he does not reach the level of "pleasantness" of the "World to Come" itself
("the World to Come is called pleasantness"),
but rather the level of "pleasantness" that "issues from the World to Come." Afterwards there is a higher manner in the study of Torah where he reaches the level of "pleasantness" of the "World to Come" itself.
And in general this is the difference between the study of Torah in general or "his Torah is his craft":
When one studies Torah in a manner of "his Torah is his craft",
his entire existence is permeated with Torah –
for Torah is above the world,
of the nature of the World to Come –
then he stands at the level of "pleasantness" of the "World to Come" itself;
דעמולט שטייט ער בא דער דרגא פון "נועם" פון "עלמא דאתי" אליין;
in contrast, when he studies Torah but not in a manner of "his Torah is his craft",
then he stands at the level of "pleasantness" that "issues from the World to Come."
And in more detail –
these two levels exist in every Jew:
The order of the study of Torah
(according to Torah)
is not that immediately at the beginning of study one reaches the level of "his Torah is his craft" –
rather one proceeds in an order from the light to the heavy,
as explained in the laws of Talmud Torah,
that first a father teaches his child "Torah which Moses commanded us etc.",
afterwards –
"at five years of age for Scripture",
afterwards "at ten years of age for Mishnah",
and afterwards,
when he becomes "at thirteen years of age for the commandments",
he becomes a "commanded one who performs" –
then he comes to a higher level in the study of Torah,
and afterwards he is elevated from level to level "at fifteen years of age for Gemara" etc.,
until he reaches the level of "his Torah is his craft."
For when a child studies Torah
(at five years of age for Scripture and the like)
it is indeed understood that he stands above the world and has the nature of the World to Come,
and he has the concept of "its ways are ways of pleasantness",
because this is the concept of Torah;
ווארום דאס איז דער ענין פון תורה;
but together with this it is understood that he does not yet have the perfection of the level of the World to Come,
then he receives only an extension of "pleasantness" in Torah as it "issues from the World to Come",
but he does not yet have the level of "pleasantness" in Torah of the World to Come itself;
אבער ער האט נאך ניט די דרגא פון "נועם" שבתורה פון עלמא דאתי אליין;
In contrast, when he becomes a "commanded one who performs",
"commandment" from the term connection and attachment with the Holy One, blessed be He –
then he comes to the level in Torah of "Israel, the Torah, and the Holy One, blessed be He are all one" –
the level of "pleasantness" in Torah of the World to Come itself.
And corresponding to this, these two aspects of "pleasantness" exist in all levels of the study of Torah,
even after Bar Mitzvah.
And when one stands on the
(higher)
level of "Noam" of "the World to Come" itself –
then higher influences are also drawn down
(like the influences that are drawn from the aspect of "Noam" which "emerges from the World to Come"),
as explained in the Zohar
(and explained in the notes of my father),
that the aspect of Noam which "emerges from the World to Come" is connected with that "from the World to Come all illuminations shine and spread to every side",
and "that goodness and that light of the World to Come which the Patriarchs draw is called Noam".
However, the level of "the World to Come is called Noam" draws down "all joy and all goodness and all illuminations and all delight of the world are aroused",
and "therefore it is called
(the World to Come)
Noam".
And simply –
that the aspect of "Noam" of the World to Come itself draws down the matter of "all joy",
the matter of joy,
"and all goodness and all illuminations and all delight of the world",
all good things.
And one can connect this also with the matter of Chanukah:
Chanukah is also of the nature of the World to Come
(the World to Come).
As is understood from what Chassidus explains
(as above at length)
that the eight days of Chanukah correspond to the eight princes of man,
which include our righteous Mashiach. From this it is understood that Chanukah in this time is of the nature of the matter of our righteous Mashiach
(the World to Come).
And this is also an explanation of the words of the Ramban that the Chanukah lights "are never nullified" and "are practiced even after the destruction in our exile",
not like the lights of the Temple which "when the Temple does not exist...
even the lights
(of the Temple)
are nullified",
for seemingly:
the Chanukah lights are after all a remembrance of the miracle with the lights of the Temple,
so how do they have the advantage that they "are never nullified" which is not even present in the lights of the Temple?
The explanation of this is,
because the festival of Chanukah will also be in the future to come,
and also now Chanukah is of the nature of the World to Come,
the aspect of the eight princes of man –
therefore the Chanukah lights "are never nullified",
also not in the time of exile,
and they will also be "forever" –
in the future to come.
And based on this it follows that Chanukah
(which is of the nature of the World to Come)
is of the nature of the aspect of "the World to Come is called Noam",
from which is drawn "all joy etc.",
the matter of joy.
And this corresponds with the ruling of the Rambam that the days of Chanukah are "days of joy".
And regarding the practical application –
the lesson from this is,
as discussed earlier –
to increase in joy during the days of Chanukah in particular,
based on the ruling of the Rambam that the days of Chanukah are "days of joy". And in accordance with that which on each day of the days of Chanukah one must add and go forth in light –
so too one must add and go forth in joy on each day of the days of Chanukah.
And one can connect this also with the explanation in the service of man in the Zohar from a previous Shabbos which still needs to be completed:
In the Zohar it is stated that "the mother of children is joyful, for the Jubilee, all delight and all joy of all worlds depend on it". And my father explains in his notes the "repetition of the language 'delight' and 'joy',
for seemingly they are all one, namely joy",
and he explains that "delight is from the side of the kindnesses and joy is from the side of the severities",
and he then explains that "delight" is from the side of the masculine, that is,
which is connected with kindnesses,
and "joy" is from the side of the feminine,
Malchut,
which is connected with severities,
as it is said "a king through justice establishes the land".
The lesson from this:
in every situation and circumstance –
whether one is in a state of kindnesses,
or one is at a level of severities –
the matter of joy must be present.
In continuation of the proposal that one should increase in joy –
it is after all not enough that one speaks and agitates about this in speech,
and one gives efforts into this etc. –
rather in addition to this there must be "and I am the beginner".
Therefore indeed there will be "and I am the beginner" and one will add a new thing in actual deed –
which in truth is not a novelty,
because for several years one has already conducted oneself in this way –
that one will make a gathering on "Zot Chanukah",
the last day of the days of Chanukah.
With this Zot Chanukah itself, one can make the farbrengen at night,
the night of Zot Chanukah or in the morning of Zot Chanukah,
when both times one lights the Chanukah candles in the synagogue –
but because:
a) tomorrow is a workday,
and b) one recites a blessing specifically on the lighting of the Chanukah candles at night,
but not in the morning,
and c) if one can do it tonight,
why should one postpone it until tomorrow –
therefore, the farbrengen will be held tonight,
the night of "Zot Chanukah",
and at the usual time
([so that it does not interfere with the study sessions of Torah) –
half an hour after the ninth hour.
And in particular, a farbrengen on Motzaei Shabbat also has the advantage that it is connected with the meal of Motzaei Shabbat, which is called
(in the Siddur of the Arizal)
"Seudata deDavid Malka Meshicha",
which has a special connection to Chanukah, which corresponds to the eight princes of man,
including Mashiach Tzidkeinu.
And this farbrengen on Motzaei Shabbat also has the advantage –
that it is a preparation for the reading of "Zot Chanukah" on the day
(including)
from "Behaalotecha et HaNeirot" until "Veh zeh maaseh haMenorah k’mar’eh asher her’ah Hashem et Moshe kein asah et haMenorah",
for the work of Moshe’s hands is eternal,
and the lights also allude to the Chanukah lights, which "are never nullified."
Another advantage in this farbrengen on Motzaei Shabbat
(compared to the farbrengen now on Shabbat day) –
that then one will be able to fulfill the mitzvah of charity with money:
On Shabbat day, one can fulfill the mitzvah of charity by giving food and drink to someone who needs to receive it. And in truth, the obligation of hospitality is primarily on Yom Tov, not on Shabbat. One of the reasons for this is –
because all matters and needs of Shabbat must be prepared before Shabbat,
as our Sages said, "Whoever toiled on Erev Shabbat will eat on Shabbat",
therefore it is understood that the Shabbat needs of the poor they must already have before Shabbat,
therefore it is not applicable then to fulfill the mitzvah of charity on Shabbat
(through a non-Jew),
because all Jews have all their needs already from before Shabbat!
And that which one sees in practice that not all have their Shabbat needs before Shabbat –
this is because of the darkness of the exile.
[The Rebbe Shlita smiled,
and said:]
It is a pity on the exile:
Wherever there is an undesirable matter –
one says that this is because of the darkness of the exile!...
Let there already be "enough of the exile" –
there will no longer be any pity on the exile,
because the exile will be nullified!
It follows that on Shabbat day there is no obligation of the mitzvah of charity. And even if one must then give charity –
it is through a non-Jew,
not with money;
ניט ע"י ממון;
but on Motzaei Shabbat there is the advantage that one can then give charity with money.
And may it be His will that through the increase of joy –
"And I begin" with a farbrengen tonight,
on the night of "Zot Chanukah" –
that soon, literally, we will break through all barriers
(as is known that joy breaks through barriers),
and nullify all undesirable matters,
until we will bring the true and complete redemption.
And regarding that which was previously announced that tonight at the tenth hour there will be a farbrengen of the "Mashpiim" –
we ask them for forgiveness, pardon, and atonement with all the matters,
and this certainly does not detract from their holy obligation as Mashpiim,
and therefore they will certainly make a farbrengen following the farbrengen that will take place here –
they will make the farbrengen tomorrow morning and during the day.
And may it be His will that the farbrengens "when the heads of the people gather together, the tribes of Israel" –
will be a close preparation for the fulfillment of the prophecy "And He was King in Yeshurun, when the heads of the people gathered together, the tribes of Israel",
and "And He was King in Yeshurun" simply refers to Moshe Rabbeinu,
the first redeemer is the final redeemer,
and "Yeshurun" refers to Jews as they are higher than "Yaakov" and even than "Yisrael",
And simply, the true and complete redemption through
(Moshe Rabbeinu,
the first redeemer is)
the final redeemer –
King Mashiach,
speedily in our days, literally immediately.
The Rebbe Shlita instructed the Shaliach Tzibbur to sing "Yehi ratzon sheyibaneh Beit HaMikdash bimheirah beyameinu, ve’ten chelkeinu beToratecha."
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to recite a blessing after meals,
will certainly recite a blessing after meals.
