English translation 1
Between Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev there are always more than seven consecutive days,
Between Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev there are always more than seven consecutive days,
therefore there must be a Shabbos between them,
and Shabbos has a connection both to the days after it
(including Yud Gimmel Kislev)
and to the days before it
(including Yud Tes Kislev)1:
Shabbos has a connection with the days after it –
as is known that from Shabbos all the days of the coming week are blessed<sup>2</sup>;
כידוע אז פון שבת מיני' מתברכין כולהו יומין דשבוע הבא 2;
And a connection with the days before it –
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said3 "Whoever toiled on Erev Shabbos will eat on Shabbos",
meaning that the "will eat on Shabbos" comes through the "toiled on Erev Shabbos",
in the days before Shabbos.
As the matter was simply in Maaseh Bereishis at the beginning of creation –
that first came the six days of creation,
when the Supreme One created the entire world,
and after "And Elokim saw
(at the conclusion of the six days)
all that He had made, and behold it was very good"4,
then could there be "And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their host"5 on the seventh day
(the day of Shabbos).
That is:
Shabbos indeed brings a completion to the creation of the six days –
then there is the "will eat" –
but this comes specifically after there is the existence of the six days and the labor and toil in the six days,
and the main thing is the existence of the six days and the labor then,
and upon that existence
(and the main thing)
Shabbos brings a completion.
And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said6 "What was the world lacking?
Rest.
Shabbos came, rest came." And the simple explanation of this is not that as long as "the world lacked rest" the main thing was missing, and when Shabbos came and completed the matter of rest the main thing was added –
this is contrary to the simple meaning,
because the main matter was already had in the six days –
then was the coming into being of the entire world,
and this was in a manner of completion,
"very good",
only that there was lacking one detail that adds to creation a higher completion –
the completion of the matter of rest,
and this Shabbos accomplished.
Indeed,
Shabbos brings an elevation and completion to creation,
even an incomparable elevation,
which proves that Shabbos is incomparably higher than the six days –
but this is only after one has the main thing –
the existence of the world
(that was created in six days)
and in completion,
only upon that itself Shabbos brings a more elevated completion.
It follows,
that already at the beginning of creation –
at the first Shabbos –
we see how Shabbos is connected and comes as a continuation to the days before it.
And so it is with every Shabbos –
as above that "whoever toiled on Erev Shabbos will eat on Shabbos".
So too is it understood regarding the Shabbos that falls between Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev,
that it has a connection both to Yud Gimmel Kislev,
from which
(from Shabbos)
all the days are blessed,
including Yud Gimmel Kislev,
and the Shabbos comes as a continuation and through the "toiled on Erev Shabbos",
including Yud Tes Kislev.
From this
(from the Shabbos between Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev)
one must derive a lesson in the service of Hashem,
Certainly from the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov7,
which is repeated each time,
that from every thing one must learn a matter in the service of man to his Maker,
all the more so a matter connected with Torah and mitzvos,
all the more so general and fundamental matters,
all the more so the redemption of Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev8
(and the matters connected with them)
which are connected with the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu in the future redemption9,
which is the most fundamental and general matter in all of creation.
And the explanation:
On the verse10 "And the spirit of Elokim hovered over the face of the waters" our Sages, of blessed memory, said11 that "the spirit of Elokim hovered –
this is the spirit of the King Moshiach".
And from this that the spirit of Moshiach
("and the spirit of Elokim hovered over the face of the waters")
was at the beginning of creation
(before the creation of all other matters)
it is understood, that
(the spirit of)
Moshiach is a fundamental element in all of creation,
and this pertains to the entire existence of creation,
and without it creation is lacking.
That is:
Moshiach is not merely an additional detail that brings an additional completion to creation
(but even without this one would have the main part of creation),
similar to what was discussed earlier regarding Shabbos,
that Shabbos brings an additional and extra completion to creation,
but the main matter is already present before Shabbos.
Moshiach will indeed bring about a perfection
(additional)
in creation,
then it will be "These are the generations of Peretz"12 full13 which is higher than the "full" of "These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created"14 –
But there is yet another aspect in Moshiach,
that Moshiach is an essence of the entire creation
(not merely an additional perfection),
as understood from that "the spirit of Moshiach"
("And the spirit of G-d hovered over the face of the waters")
was present immediately at the beginning of creation,
before the creation of all other things,
even before the utterance "Let there be light"
(according to the simple meaning of the verses).
That is, that "the spirit of Moshiach" is not like the concept of Shabbos which came only after the six days of creation,
but on the contrary –
Moshiach came at the beginning of the six days of creation,
which shows that this is not merely a part of creation,
but an essential and primary part of the entire creation.
Furthermore:
Even as it later descends lower into the utterance "Let there be light",
i.e., even as it already has a connection with worlds –
it was also a light with which the Holy One, blessed be He, saw from one end of the world to the other,15
which then was only for a limited time and afterwards they "concealed" the light,
and it will be revealed again permanently in the future.15
This further emphasizes how Moshiach is an essential part
(and moreover –
the beginning)
of the entire creation,
because in addition to that at the beginning of creation there was "the spirit of Moshiach",
as this is from the levels above worlds,
it also later descends into the utterance "Let there be light",
which already has a connection with worlds,
so that this is a light that is connected with Moshiach,
with the future redemption.
It follows that Moshiach is an essential and general part of the entire creation,
as it was revealed at the beginning of creation and will be revealed in the future,
and also now it exists in perfection with all its force,
only not in full revelation,
but the concept exists with all its force in all times,
even now when we do not see it in revelation.
And the explanation of this:
The Torah is eternal.16 Every concept that is written in the Torah is eternal with its full force in all times.
What the explanation and novelty in this is not only as the world learns,
that the concepts and commandments in the Torah were not only in the past but they are also valid in the present and they are eternal forever and ever,
which is really no novelty –
for what does it inform us?
Rather, in this there is yet another novelty to which one does not pay attention:17
that the Torah is intrinsically eternal –
i.e., in every single moment of time,
not only in the future,
but in every single moment in the present and also in the past.
That is, that also the concepts in the Torah that speak about a time in the future,
and concepts of Torah that were revealed after the giving of the Torah,
including also the concepts in the Torah that will be revealed only in the future –
are eternal with all their force in all times
(also before their revelation),
in every single moment,
in the present and in the past,
also now,
only afterwards comes a time when this becomes revealed in actuality,
but also before that it exists with all its force.
And in our matter:
In the Torah there are concepts that will be revealed only in the future,
like the aforementioned concepts
(the spirit of Moshiach,
and the light that was created on the first day).
And like the concept of the study of the inner dimension of the Torah,
the Torah of Moshiach,17
which will be revealed in the future,
as it is written18 "Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth",
"the secret of my reasons and the hidden mysteries of my treasures".19 So even though this is stated in the Torah in the future tense
("Let him kiss me"),
since, however, it is stated in the Torah which is eternal,
it exists also now
(before the redemption)
and in the past with all its force,
only not in full revelation;
נאר ניט בכל הגילוי;
the full revelation of this will be only in the future,
but also before that –
when it is not in full revelation –
it exists with all its force.
And that the concept is not in full revelation does not affect at all the force and eternity of the matter –
because such is the order in the Torah,
that it is revealed not necessarily all at once,
but at different times.
As we find this concept also in the revealed dimension of the Torah,
in the Written Torah:
There are several commandments and laws in the Written Torah that were actually revealed only after the time of the Giving of the Torah. Like the commandment of Pesach Sheni –
which was revealed only in the second year20. And furthermore:
The portion of inheritances was revealed only in the fortieth year through the daughters of Tzelafchad21.
And regarding this, it is said concerning several matters "the Torah was given and a law was renewed"22:
The Torah says that this is a novelty that was added later.
But together with this it is understood,
that even though these matters were revealed and renewed only at a time after the Giving of the Torah –
they are a part of the eternal Torah,
and after these commandments were revealed they have the full force of a commandment that was given at the Giving of the Torah,
and they are eternal for all times,
also in relation to the past
(when they were not yet revealed).
The matter –
that from generation to generation more matters in the Torah are revealed –
is further emphasized in the Oral Torah,
for the entire Oral Torah is founded on the fact that from generation to generation new matters come through the sages of each and every generation,
until "what a distinguished student will innovate in the future"23. And the law is that every matter that is added in the Oral Torah through the sages in their generation,
after it is renewed it has the full force of Torah and the eternity of Torah,
not only from now onward but also regarding the present and the past.
As this is regarding the Sanhedrin:
Our sages, of blessed memory, say24 that "Yerubaal in his generation is like Moshe in his generation",
"Yiftach in his generation is like Shmuel in his generation",
and as it is written25 "And you shall come to the Levitical priests and to the judge who will be in those days",
"You have no [obligation] to go except to the judge in your days"24.
That is:
Every Sanhedrin in each and every generation
(if it is indeed a Sanhedrin according to Torah)
has the power to innovate and reveal new laws according to what appears to the sages of that Sanhedrin.
And even though this Sanhedrin and its rulings were revealed only several generations after the generation of Moshe and the generation of Shmuel and the like,
and not only later in time but also in level,
nevertheless,
if the majority of the Sanhedrin rules in a certain manner
[and this is a Sanhedrin that has all the conditions of a Sanhedrin according to Torah,
that the members of the Sanhedrin are ordained person from person until Moshe Rabbeinu26,
along with the other details and conditions regarding this],
it becomes "after the majority to incline"27,
and regardless of the level of the Sanhedrin, their ruling becomes a law in the eternal Torah,
"like Moshe in his generation",
with the full force of a positive commandment,
"according to the Torah that they will teach you"28,
and of a negative commandment,
"Do not deviate from the matter that they will tell you"28 as per the ruling of the Rambam29,
And therefore after they innovate the law, their ruling becomes an eternal law for all times,
and not only from now onward but also regarding the past,
as the law is30 "A Great Court that expounded using one of the hermeneutical principles according to what appeared in their eyes that the law is so, and judged a case, and after them another court stood and saw another reason to contradict it,
behold this one contradicts and judges according to what appears in his eyes,
as it is said: 'to the judge who will be in those days',
you are not obligated to go except after the court that is in your time",
even though in the generations before this, Sanhedrin ruled in a different manner.
To the extent that according to the opinion of the Rambam31, the matter of ordination and appointment of a court is applicable even in this time:
"It appears to me that if all the sages in the Land of Israel agreed to appoint judges and ordain them,
behold these are ordained and they have [the authority] to judge cases of fines and they have [the authority] to ordain others".
And even though there are those who dispute this32 –
nevertheless, the Beit Yosef conducted himself in this manner,
the "Rabbi" in his generation and author of the Shulchan Aruch, that he ordained others33,
and as is known that the Beit Yosef himself was actually ordained134.
That is,
that according to this opinion, even in this time there is the full force of the matter of ordination and the force of establishing a court that is ordained person from person until Moshe Rabbeinu –
even though we are before the building of the Holy Temple and the coming of Mashiach and before the fulfillment of the prophecy35 "And I will restore your judges as at first",
which simply will be
("And I will restore")
through the Holy One, blessed be He, speedily in our days,
but according to the opinion of the Rambam and others, something similar is applicable even now36.
And from this it is understood regarding all matters that are in the Torah,
and regarding all promises for the future that are in the Torah –
that even though the perfection of their revelation will be only in the future,
nevertheless, since they are in the Torah,
they are eternal with the full force in all times,
also in the past,
i.e., also now,
before the matter is revealed in perfection.
Like the opinion of the Rambam regarding semichah and the standing of the court,
that this applies also in the present time.
As the matter is regarding every Sanhedrin,
that even though a law is revealed through a Sanhedrin many generations after the generation of Moses,
it has the force exactly like the force of "Moses in his generation."
And by way of example, as this is in the Written Torah itself –
as above regarding the Second Passover and the portion of inheritances,
that they were revealed after the Giving of the Torah,
but they have the full force of the Giving of the Torah,
and the force of the eternal Torah,
also in the present and in the past.
And the rationale for this is derived from a more general example for this –
from every time-bound commandment:
The actual prohibition of chametz,
for example,
exists only seven days a year,
during the seven days of Passover.
However, during the rest of the year it is merely a piece of sour dough,
not a matter of chametz and the prohibition of chametz. Because the prohibition applies only at the time when the Torah considers it significant37,
in our case –
during the seven days of Passover.
And it is understood that even though the prohibition actually exists only during a limited time of the year
(seven days),
it does not at all affect nor in any way weaken the eternity of the matter
(being a part of the eternal Torah).
Because even though in actuality the prohibition is only during the seven days of Passover,
and at that very time –
one knows that the seven days of Passover will certainly pass
[for "day and night shall not cease"38]
and after the seven days there will be no existence of the prohibition of chametz,
and likewise before the seven days there was no prohibition of chametz –
nevertheless,
since the prohibition of chametz is a part of the eternal Torah,
the essence of the matter exists with full force throughout the entire year,
only in practical halachah it is revealed explicitly only during the seven days of Passover.
Similarly regarding the commandment of taking the Four Species –
the commandment exists only at the time when the commandment is considered significant37,
during the seven days of Sukkot,
but before and after it is simply four species of plants that have no sanctity of the commandment upon them.
Nevertheless,
since this is a commandment in the Torah,
the essence of the matter is eternal throughout the entire year,
only in practical halachah it is revealed explicitly only during the seven days of Sukkot.
And similarly regarding every time-bound commandment.
From this it is also understood regarding all matters of the Torah,
including also the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah that will be in the perfection of revelation in the future.
And similarly regarding all promises in the Torah concerning the future –
that even though a particular matter in the Torah is revealed at a particular time,
it does not at all affect the eternity of the essence of the matter in all times,
whether in the future or in the present and past,
i.e., that the matter,
and in our case –
the revelations of Mashiach –
exists with full force in all times,
only there is a time when the matter comes out in the perfection of revelation,
in halachah, in actual deed, and the like,
but the eternity of the matter is with full force in all times,
also now.
And so too regarding the novel halachic rulings of the sages of the Sanhedrin in every generation,
that even though they are revealed in that generation,
"Yiftach in his generation is like Samuel in his generation" up to "like Moses in his generation."
From all the above it is also understood regarding the tenth and the nineteenth of Kislev –
that they are both connected with the coming of Mashiach
(which is the most essential and inclusive matter in all of creation, and in an eternal manner in all times,
as explained at length above):
The tenth of Kislev and the nineteenth of Kislev – indeed the redemption of the nineteenth of Kislev was revealed later –
in the year 5599,
and the redemption of the tenth of Kislev –
in the year 558739
(or 558640).
But this became a custom of Israel which is Torah41. And moreover –
this was revealed through our Nesi'im,
for even what a veteran student will innovate was given to Moses at Sinai23,
all the more so a veteran teacher,
all the more so a Nasi in Israel,
for "the Nasi is everything"42,
and every Nasi is the Moses of his generation43,
And not only the extension of Moses that is in every generation<sup>44</sup>;
און ניט נאר אתפשטותא דמשה שבכל דרא ודרא 44;
not that "his light extends in every generation to six hundred thousand souls, like the sun that shines beneath the earth to six hundred thousand stars"45,
but as the Gemara46 calls every Torah scholar by the name "Moses" simply –
"Moses, you have spoken well",
i.e., not an extension of Moses,
but Moses himself,
and this is the name that is called him in the holy tongue which gives him life and brings him into being
(according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov47).
And this is specifically in the revealed aspect of Torah;
און דאס שטייט דוקא אין נגלה דתורה;
in the inner dimension of Torah it states that a leader of the generation is an "extension of Moses",
but in the revealed aspect it states simply that every Torah scholar is not "a son of Moses" nor "an extension of Moses",
but "Moses" himself!
From this it is understood,
that although the tenth of Kislev and the nineteenth of Kislev were revealed later,
but since this became a custom of Israel, Torah it is,
it becomes a part of the Torah, which is eternal,
And furthermore –
since this was revealed through the leaders of Israel
(our Rabbis, our leaders),
each of whom is the Moses of his generation
(as above) –
each leader is certainly "like Moses in his generation" regarding the enactment of the Sanhedrin,
and just as every law that is innovated by the sages of the Sanhedrin receives the full force of Torah
(positive commandments and negative commandments)
and the eternity of Torah,
so too regarding the tenth of Kislev and the nineteenth of Kislev which were revealed through our Rabbis, our leaders,
this is an eternal matter that exists with all its force in all times,
not only from now onward but also regarding the present and the past
(only that then it was not yet revealed openly)!
In addition to that the tenth of Kislev and the nineteenth of Kislev,
like every matter in Torah,
are eternal,
because the Torah is eternal –
there is a second thing that is said about every matter in Torah
(in addition to that it is eternal),
that "every day they should be in your eyes as new"48.
And as our Sages, of blessed memory, said49 "Just as [it was given] at Sinai with awe, fear, trembling, and quaking, so too here with awe, fear, trembling, and quaking".
And this is also simply understood for a simple person:
since "whoever reads and reviews, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him"50,
and it is understood that by the Most High there is absolutely no change or difference between the first time and the hundredth time or more –
it is understood,
that every time a Jew reads and reviews in Torah and the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him,
it is with the full force,
"with awe, fear, trembling, and quaking",
exactly like the first time51.
From this it is understood,
since the matter of the tenth of Kislev and the nineteenth of Kislev is eternal with the full force in all times and it must be every day in the manner of "new" –
there is in this an eternal lesson,
and a lesson in the manner of "new".
And since in every year there is a Shabbat between the tenth of Kislev and the nineteenth of Kislev,
from which all the days are blessed, including the nineteenth of Kislev, and it comes after and in continuation to "he who toiled on Shabbat eve", including the tenth of Kislev
(as above, section 1) –
there must also be from this an eternal lesson.
And the lesson must consist of the very content of the matter that this is the Shabbat between the tenth of Kislev and the nineteenth of Kislev.
That is, the lesson must consist of that the matters of this Shabbat
(the "he shall eat on Shabbat")
come through the work and toil
(in the days before this, including)
on the tenth of Kislev,
and on this Shabbat only an additional perfection comes to this,
but the main matter is already prepared
(from the days before, including)
the tenth of Kislev;
יו"ד כסלו;
and this
(the "he shall eat on Shabbat" that comes through the "toil on Shabbat eve",
on the tenth of Kislev)
includes also the matter on Shabbat from which all the days are blessed, including
(in our case)
the nineteenth of Kislev.
That is, the lesson consists of two points:
a) The lesson from that it is the Shabbat after the tenth of Kislev,
when all the matters of the tenth of Kislev are elevated to a higher perfection. And b) The lesson from that it is the Shabbat before the nineteenth of Kislev,
which blesses and gives strength to the work on the nineteenth of Kislev. And these two matters
(the Shabbat after the tenth of Kislev and the Shabbat before the nineteenth of Kislev)
come together in this Shabbat.
This will be understood by first introducing the distinction between the relationship of Shabbat to the tenth of Kislev and to the nineteenth of Kislev:
Yud Tes Kislev comes before Shabbos.
That is, even before Shabbos one has the main thing –
the entire concept of Yud Tes Kislev,
and Shabbos does not nullify this concept,
and on the contrary –
through the labor and toil
(including "one who toils on Erev Shabbos")
on Yud Tes Kislev one brings about the "he shall eat on Shabbos"
(and even in this year when Yud Tes Kislev occurred on Shabbos day –
he blessed the days of "Erev Shabbos" which brought about the "he shall eat on Shabbos").
Only on this Shabbos does Yud Tes Kislev attain a completion of a higher level,
until a completion and elevation of "Vayechulu"52,
[And although Yud Tes Kislev was on the previous Shabbos –
it was discussed several times,
that it is a great difficulty to say that the "Vayechulu" of Shabbos is only in the six weekdays preceding it and not in that Shabbos itself,
because it is contrary to reason to say that the six weekdays (in addition to the "I have done My work"53 of each individual day) are elevated on Shabbos to a higher completion,
but the day of Shabbos itself has only its "I have done My work" and is not elevated to a higher completion?!
On the contrary:
Since the six weekdays are elevated on the following Shabbos,
all the more so that Shabbos is elevated,
and when does this happen –
on the following Shabbos],
But as discussed above at length
(section 1),
for the day of Shabbos one has in completeness all matters
(as it was in Maaseh Bereishis at the beginning of creation –
that in the six days before Shabbos there was the coming into being of the entire world),
only Shabbos adds a completion of a higher level in this.
However, the relationship of this Shabbos with Yud-Tes Kislev is exactly the opposite:
Yud-Tes Kislev comes after Shabbos,
and from Shabbos all the days are blessed, including Yud-Tes Kislev. That is,
(in terms of letters of service)
on this Shabbos one does not yet have the service of Yud-Tes Kislev,
rather from this Shabbos one must first elicit a directive and empowerment and blessing to perform the service of Yud-Tes Kislev.
That is, regarding Yud Tes Kislev one does not accomplish anything new on this Shabbos –
it only comes to an elevation in the service of Yud Tes Kislev;
עס קומט נאר צו אן עלי' אין דער עבודה פון יו"ד כסלו;
however, regarding Yud-Tes Kislev one accomplishes the entire concept on this Shabbos.
And furthermore:
All the matters of Shabbos
("he shall eat on Shabbos")
come about through the toil and labor
("on Erev Shabbos",
including)
on Yud Tes Kislev,
including also the very concept that from Shabbos all the days are blessed. It follows that Yud Tes Kislev (–
through which comes "he shall eat on Shabbos")
gives the power to this Shabbos
(on which Yud Tes Kislev was then observed in its completeness,
and moreover in the manner of "Vayechulu")
that it should bless Yud-Tes Kislev.
This requires explanation,
for prima facie the opposite seems logical:
The Alter Rebbe,
the master of the redemption of Yud-Tes Kislev,
was the founder of the teachings of Chassidus Chabad and the first of all the Nesiim of Chabad,
"first" also from the term "head",
and a head includes all the matters that come afterward,
similar to "Rosh Hashanah" and "Rosh Chodesh"
(as explained in the discourses of the Alter Rebbe54 and of the Mitteler Rebbe55).
However, the Mitteler Rebbe,
the master of the redemption of Yud Tes Kislev,
came only afterward as his son and successor of the Alter Rebbe.
Accordingly, it would be more fitting to say that on this Shabbos one has in completeness the matters of Yud-Tes Kislev,
and a Jew does not accomplish this anew,
however, the concept of Yud Tes Kislev
(the redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe)
needs to be accomplished,
and on the contrary –
Yud-Tes Kislev
(the redemption of the Alter Rebbe,
the founder of Chassidus Chabad and first of the Nesiim of Chabad)
gives the power that one can accomplish the concept of Yud Tes Kislev;
גיט דעם כח אז מ'זאל קענען אויפטאן דעם ענין פון יו"ד כסלו;
But how is it fitting to say the opposite,
that the concept of Yud Tes Kislev is not accomplished anew,
and what every Jew needs to accomplish anew –
the concept of Yud-Tes Kislev,
a thing that the Alter Rebbe already accomplished,
and how does one accomplish this –
through the power of Yud Tes Kislev,
the redemption of his son and successor?!
Certainly there are in this several explanations with several instructions,
but one cannot begin to speak all explanations at once,
and one cannot take out all instructions at once,
because one must bring this down into actual deed,
"taforo da flacho"56,
for which one must begin specifically from one thing,
one "taforo". The simple meaning of the matter:
If one would take many "taforo's",
many axes,
it could not be "taforo da flacho",
one would not be able to chop the wood;
מ'וועט ניט קענען האַקן די האָלץ;
In order that it should be "taforo da flacho" and one should perform a complete melacha
(with the conditions in halacha of what constitutes a complete melacha) –
one must take specifically one "taforo",
one instruction in actual deed.
On the other hand, however, it is understood,
that even though one must begin to speak only one matter,
and one cannot be certain whether one has grasped an essential detail or a secondary detail –
nevertheless, since each of the explanations and instructions in this is a part of the Torah of truth,
which
(the Torah)
is infinite,
consequently the rule applies to it that "the essence, when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it"57,
i.e., that every detail within it,
even a secondary detail,
grasps the entire essence,
which is infinite.
One of the innovations of the Mitteler Rebbe relative to the Alter Rebbe is that the Mitteler Rebbe corresponds to the sefirah of Binah58,
whose concept is "Rechovot HaNahar"59,
as discussed at length in the previous farbrengen60.
And as is known from the sichot of our Nesi'im61 that the Alter Rebbe corresponds to the sefirah of Chochmah and the Mitteler Rebbe corresponds to the sefirah of Binah. And one of the differences between Chochmah and Binah is,
that Chochmah is in the manner of a point62,
like a spring,
and Binah is a "heichala"62,
like a river,
until the manner of "Rechovot HaNahar",
until this reaches "Rechovot" which is higher than river.
And how the difference expresses itself beginning in the teachings of the Alter Rebbe and of the Mitteler Rebbe –
as "Ana nafshi ketavit yehavit"63:
In relation to the Chassidic discourses of the Mitteler Rebbe, the discourses of the Alter Rebbe are in the manner of a point. This does not mean that one does not find maamarim of the Alter Rebbe that explain a matter at length in quantity and all the more so in quality,
certainly there are such maamarim –
but in relation to the "heichala" of Binah,
and all the more so "Rechovot HaNahar" in the discourses of the Mitteler Rebbe –
the discourses of the Alter Rebbe are in the manner of a point.
In contrast, the discourses of the Mitteler Rebbe are with expansion, with length of explanation, etc.,
as one sees it simply64.
And "Histakel b'Oraita u'vara alma"65 –
from this "Rechovot HaNahar" in the Torah of the Mitteler Rebbe,
there is subsequently drawn expansion also in worldly matters,
in banim, chayei, u'mezonei revichei, u'vechulam revichei.
And at the time when Shabbat comes after Yud Tes Kislev
(today's Shabbat) –
the matter is elevated to a higher perfection,
until the manner of "Vayechulu".
And from this we have the lesson and instruction
(standing in this Shabbat after Yud Tes Kislev when all his matters are elevated in the manner of "Vayechulu") –
that in every Jew there must be "Rechovot HaNahar",
first and foremost –
in the study of Torah,
and "gadol talmud shemeivi lidei ma'aseh"66,
the expansion must come down into the fulfillment of mitzvot,
until "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven"67 and "in all your ways know Him"68.
And just as Above it is "Histakel b'Oraita u'vara alma",
and from expansion in Torah expansion is drawn into the world –
so too must it be in the "world" that the Jew creates,
It is known that a Jew is a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation"69,
and the true meaning of partners according to Torah is not,
that one partner has full ownership over half of the thing,
and the second partner has full ownership over the other half,
but rather in every single point of the thing they are equal partners70,
and especially since the acquisition from the outset was through both partners,
through their money and the like,
meaning that each of the partners gave a portion of the money to purchase the thing,
which before this the money was separate
(in separate domains),
and now the money came together and became one thing with which the entire thing is purchased,
consequently both are equal partners in the entire thing.
From this it is also understood regarding that a Jew is a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation",
that he is a partner in the entire work of creation,
and has the power
(just like the second partner –
the Most High)
to "create a world".
He is told,
that just as "He looked into the Torah and created the world",
so too must it be with the Jew,
that from the "broad rivers" of his Torah study,
he should draw down expansion in the world that he creates,
in the physical world,
and simply –
expansion in children, life, and ample sustenance, and in all of them ample.
And especially since the intention of expansion in physicality for a Jew
(which is drawn from expansion in Torah),
is not for the sake of physicality alone,
but rather –
so that through this very thing
(through the expansion in physicality)
there should come expansion in Torah,
as per the ruling of the Rambam in the Laws of Repentance71,
that the Torah elaborates about physical rewards because specifically when a Jew has physicality he can study Torah with tranquility and expansion. That is, not only that through expansion
("broad rivers")
in Torah expansion in physicality is drawn
(in the world),
but this very thing itself pertains to an increase of expansion in Torah.
It is known the saying of the Alter Rebbe72,
that the Most High gives Jews physicality and Jews make from physicality spirituality.
And this is truly the content of the aforementioned ruling of the Rambam.
There are those who ask about the matters that are found in Chassidus,
including the aforementioned saying –
from where are these matters? In addition to that which is a principle in Torah that everything that a worthy student will innovate in the future was given to Moshe at Sinai,
all the more so a worthy Rebbe –
there is a source for this saying of the Alter Rebbe from the ruling of the Rambam:
The Rambam writes that the Torah elaborates about the physical rewards,
because when a Jew has physicality he can study Torah and fulfill the commandments with tranquility and expansion.
That is, that one gives a Jew physicality and from the physicality he makes spirituality –
he makes from it Torah study and fulfillment of the commandments with tranquility and expansion.
Based on this, the question turns the other way –
there are those who on every matter seek to say "the opposite is logical":
Since the Rambam already wrote it –
now what did the Alter Rebbe accomplish by saying the saying?!
The Rebbe, the father-in-law, already answered this regarding another matter:
In Tanya73 the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov is brought regarding "Forever, Hashem, Your word stands firm in the heavens"74,
that creation is at every single moment from absolute nothing. The same question arises:
This matter is already in Midrash Tehillim75,
as the Tzemach Tzedek notes in Likkutei Torah76 –
so what did the Baal Shem Tov accomplish?
The Rebbe, the father-in-law, explains77,
based on the wording in Tanya "and the Baal Shem Tov explained",
"and explained" from the language of spreading out:
The explanation is indeed in Midrash Tehillim,
but the Baal Shem Tov spread it out in a way that it should reach every Jew,
until it becomes the simple faith of every Jew,
even simple people.
The same applies regarding the aforementioned saying of the Alter Rebbe.
Based on what was explained above regarding the innovation of the Mitteler Rebbe concerning the Alter Rebbe regarding the matter of "broad rivers" of Binah,
which on this Shabbos the elevation thereof reaches the ultimate perfection –
one will understand how on this Shabbos one has the power to bless and accomplish the matter of Yud Tes Kislev,
the redemption of the Alter Rebbe,
and how the power for this comes from Yud Kislev itself
(which gives the power that Shabbos should bless Yud Tes Kislev).
And as an introduction:
When one is already storming about Shabbat regarding Yud-Tes Kislev –
the yetzer comes and argues to the Jew:
You yourself say that it is only Yud-Zayin Kislev,
two days before Yud-Tes Kislev –
so why are you already storming now about Yud-Tes Kislev?!
True, indeed, Yud-Zayin
(Kislev)
has the gematria of “Tov”,
which also a gematria indicates a matter,
and one learns halachos from gematrios etc. –
but it is still Yud-Zayin Kislev and not Yud-Tes Kislev,
so why are you already storming about Yud-Tes Kislev?!
And especially since you are a Chabadnik –
argues the yetzer –
it is not enough that you want to conduct yourself this way,
rather you must explain it with chochmah, binah, and daas,
and in a manner that it becomes understandable in the intellect of the animal soul,
and in a manner of “yisparnun minei”78,
so that it becomes “dam u’vasar k’vasaro”79 of his physical intellect and physical body etc.
The yetzer argues,
that you must explain to me with chochmah, binah, and daas in the aforementioned manner, how does it come that one storms about Yud-Tes Kislev two twenty-four hour periods before it?!
And not only –
argues the yetzer further –
that you yourself storm,
rather you also storm upon others! It is understandable that if you yourself want to be wild –
be wild,
but why must you make others wild?!
And especially since you do not want them to merely storm. Rather that they themselves should also understand it with their own intellect,
with chochmah, binah, and daas, also in the intellect of the animal soul
(as above) –
because if not,
you argue that he is a chitzoni!
And it is known the method of Poland –
one must be careful with them –
that “tzaddik b’emunaso yichyeh”80,
“al tikrei yichyeh ela yichyeh”
(with a patach)81,
one relies on the faith that the tzaddik draws down in each one.
And there is yet an explanation –
that he himself cannot attain the faith that the tzaddik can draw down,
it is better that he rely on the tzaddik rather than do it himself. And when one tells him that at that time there is lacking the taste of his kab –
he answers:
Here his taste is not relevant,
this is a matter of yeshus etc.
And one must come to explanations and elucidations in order to explain to him that there is a taste according to Torah etc. etc.,
and elsewhere, and especially since one has already spoken about this many times.
But the method of Chabad is,
that in addition to this, each one must himself toil and himself understand with chochmah, binah, and daas.
Consequently –
argues the yetzer –
what is the explanation in Chabad why you storm yourself and storm upon others about Yud-Tes Kislev –
when one still stands two days before Yud-Tes Kislev?
And you further say that this Shabbat is mevorech Yud-Tes Kislev,
that a mevorech must simply be higher than the one being blessed,
because if not –
how can he bless him when the one being blessed is higher than him? So what is the explanation in intellect to say –
asks the yetzer –
that the Shabbat which is two days before Yud-Tes Kislev is higher than Yud-Tes Kislev and has the power to bless it?!
So the explanation in this is understandable according to the above,
that in addition to the fact that this Shabbat is mevorech Yud-Tes Kislev, it is also the Shabbat that comes after Yud-Kislev:
Yud-Kislev,
the day of redemption of the Mitteler Rebbe,
has a superiority relative to Yud-Tes Kislev,
the day of redemption of the Alter Rebbe –
the superiority of “Rechovos HaNahar” of Binah
(the matter of the Mitteler Rebbe)
relative to the point of Chochmah
(the matter of the Alter Rebbe),
for in Binah there comes an expansion that is not in the point of Chochmah,
as explained at length in many places in Chassidus82.
Furthermore:
Binah causes that also in Chochmah there should be the elevation of “Rechovos HaNahar” –
as is known that there is the matter of “havein b’chochmah”83,
the matter
(and superiority)
of Binah
(“Rechovos HaNahar”)
in Chochmah. And this is among the most prominent matters to which one does not pay attention:
Generally one learns that Chochmah is like a spring and Binah is like a river outside the spring,
and specifically in this river outside the spring the matter of “Rechovos HaNahar” occurs. In truth, however, there is also the matter of “havein b’chochmah” –
the matter of “Rechovos HaNahar” in the spring
(Chochmah)
itself.
From this it is also understood regarding Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Kislev
(which are Binah and Chochmah),
that Yud Kislev causes that even in Yud Tes Kislev
(Chochmah)
there should be the quality of "Rechovos HaNahar".
And based on this one will understand
(in a manner that one can also explain it in Chabad sheb'Sechel)
the storm of Yud Tes Kislev already on that Shabbos
(even though it is two days before Yud Tes Kislev),
and how the Shabbos has the power to bless and bring about the matter of Yud Tes Kislev:
On this Shabbos –
when at that time the matter of "Rechovos HaNahar" was completed
(from Yud Kislev),
until a manner of "Vayechulu" in ultimate perfection,
and with this power
(of Yud Kislev,
the toil of Erev Shabbos)
the Shabbos blesses Yud Tes Kislev –
the quality that Binah
(Yud Kislev)
causes in Chochmah
(Yud Tes Kislev) is emphasized –
"Haven b'Chochmah",
that also in the point of Chochmah of Yud Tes Kislev there should be the matter of expansion of "Rechovos HaNahar".
And the matter
(the continuation from Binah into Chochmah,
"Haven b'Chochmah")
begins on this Shabbos itself –
as is known that Shabbos is the level of "Kodesh Mila b'Garmei"84
("Mikdashe v'Kayama"85),
the aspect of Chochmah;
בחי' חכמה;
and since this is a Shabbos in which the matter of Binah
(of Yud Kislev)
stands in ultimate perfection
(of "Vayechulu") –
it is understood that on this Shabbos
(Chochmah)
one has the matter of Binah –
"Haven b'Chochmah".
And from this it is then drawn into the blessing of Shabbos –
Shmini mitbarechin kulehu yomin
(which comes from the power of Yud Kislev,
the toil of Erev Shabbos) –
that Shabbos blesses and draws from Binah
(Yud Kislev)
into Chochmah
(Yud Tes Kislev).
And from this is understood the storm on this Shabbos in the matter of Yud Tes Kislev
(even though it is two days before Yud Tes Kislev) –
because the Shabbos blesses and draws and causes a novelty in Yud Tes Kislev,
that in it there should be the matter of "Rechovos HaNahar"!
And it is also understood the content of this Shabbos that is between Yud Kislev and Yud Tes Kislev –
that the Shabbos receives from Yud Kislev,
and with this power it draws into Yud Tes Kislev
(even though ostensibly the Mitteler Rebbe is the successor and receiver from the Alter Rebbe) –
because here it speaks about the quality of "Rechovos HaNahar" of Binah relative to the point of Chochmah,
and that in Yud Tes Kislev
(Chochmah)
the quality of "Rechovos HaNahar" from Yud Kislev is drawn.
But the question still remains:
What does one take out from this in actual practice,
in "taforo da placho",
also for a simple person?
And this must be a practical lesson right now. Therefore one cannot tell him to first go run to the mikveh and then sit and learn in these and those books,
which will take a length of time,
rather he needs the practical instruction right now,
even for Minchah prayers!
So the instruction from this simply is –
in a manner that a simple person can bring it down into practice right now:
In every word of the Alter Rebbe,
which is generally in a manner of a point –
a Jew must bring in expansion.
Starting from the first word of the Alter Rebbe in his holy Tanya –
the Written Torah of Chassidus86 –
"Tanya":
"תניא":
The one and only word "Tanya" is one point
(the point of Chochmah).
This means simply –
that a Tanna taught87.
As this is understood also for a simple person:
He does not know any details of what a Tanna is and what the Tanna taught,
he only knows one point,
that in generations before this there were Tannaim,
and knows that they were men of stature,
higher than him,
even higher than Amoraim and Rabbanan Savorai and Geonim etc.,
all the more so higher than the people of his generation. Even if he does not know the difference between a Tanna and an Amora,
and does not know that "Im haRishonim k'Malachim anu k'..."88,
he knows however that a Tanna has a quality relative to him and relative to the people of the current generation.
And therefore he understands simply the explanation of the word "Tanya" –
that a certain Tanna at that time in that place taught a matter in Torah.
He does not yet have any connection to the details that the Tanna taught,
the concept of "we adjure him etc.",
and certainly he does not know all the allusions in this,
because he is only connected to the simple meaning of the simple meaning. He knows only the point that there was the concept of "Tanya",
that the Tanna taught something.
As mentioned,
this is a single point without details –
that in previous generations, in a specific place, there was a singular Tanna,
who at that time taught a specific subject in Torah.
He is told the instruction,
that he must bring about that the single point of "Tanya" should stand in a manner of expansion,
"broad places of the river".
This means simply,
that it should not remain with the single point of "Tanya",
that a Tanna somewhere once taught a subject in Torah,
rather this must become a "Tanya" in a manner of expansion,
among all people and in all times and in all places:
the "Tanya" of that Tanna
[whose soul is indeed eternal,
in all times and in all places]
also affects him,
so that with him it becomes "Tanya",
he now learns the Torah,
and he learns it –
"Tanya" –
with the members of his household and all the Jews around him,
until it becomes a "Tanya" among all Jews,
all Jews learn Torah,
until it becomes "Tanya" in the entire world,
until –
in all the worlds entirely,
also in the worlds above this
[as mentioned, that the soul of the Tanna is also now present in the upper worlds],
until in the entire order of descent.
What also a simple person knows, that there are many worlds besides this world,
he does not know
(as it is stated in Tanya89)
that this world is the lowest world, beneath which there is no lower,
but he assumes that this is not the most exalted world,
and he knows that there is Gan Eden and the World to Come, which are higher than this world.
One sees from this how in the first word of the Alter Rebbe's book Tanya –
"Tanya" –
which is one word and one point,
before anything else is learned –
one can draw down the concept of "broad places of the river".
And from this the simple person has a lesson immediately at this farbrengen of this Shabbat which emphasizes the accomplishment of Yud Tes Kislev
(Binah)
Yud-Tes Kislev
(Chochmah):
While he goes to daven Minchah,
or before this –
while he says "L'Chaim" over a physical thing,
it is a simple matter that he recites a blessing beforehand over it,
and for this he does not need any special avodah,
because so his father,
mother,
older brother or sister,
educated him from childhood onward,
as one sees in the custom of Israel that one educates a child to say blessings many years before the age of five.
He has the lesson from this Shabbat –
between Yud Kislev and Yud-Tes Kislev –
that this very thing he must do in a manner of expansion,
as discussed earlier regarding "Tanya".
From this there is also,
of course,
a lesson for the greatest of the great,
"your heads, your tribes":
It is understood that in the avodah of bringing about that "Tanya" should be in a manner of expansion,
there are levels upon levels,
and one can always add in this "with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might"90.
From this it is understood that in this there is a lesson for everyone,
both for simple people according to their level,
and for the greatest of the great who must do in this not only in actual deed but also "with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might" etc.
And in more detail:
In general, simple people have more connection to the Written Torah,
where understanding and comprehension are not as relevant,
and great people have more connection to the Oral Torah,
where understanding and comprehension are relevant91.
Based on this it is understood that with simple people the lesson of drawing down expansion in a point,
is primarily in the Written Torah –
in the book of Tanya,
the Written Torah of Chassidus,
beginning from its beginning –
the word "Tanya",
that one must bring about that the word and single point of "Tanya" should stand in a manner of expansion.
And with great people the lesson
(of drawing down expansion in a point)
is primarily in the Oral Torah,
beginning from its beginning –
that the first word and single point of the Oral Torah –
"Me'eimatai",
should be spread in a manner of expansion.
And the explanation of this:
"Me'eimasai" is only a single point –
one single word. And also its content indicates a matter of a point:
"Me'eimasai" means "when is the time."
That is, that "Me'eimasai" refers to a limited time,
a moment
(a point)
in time. As the continuation of the Mishnah –
"Me'eimasai korin es Shema ba'aravim,"
and regarding this there are several opinions in the Mishnah:
"From the time that the kohanim enter to eat their terumah" etc.
According to all these opinions, the time for Kriyas Shema in the evening is a point,
a moment in time,
a limited time,
at which time is the time for Kriyas Shema.
Afterwards, a Jew is commanded,
that the "Me'eimasai,"
the point of the time of Kriyas Shema should be spread in a manner of expansion
("Rechovos HaNahar") –
that the content of the matter of Kriyas Shema,
"Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad"92,
should permeate and be felt in every single moment of the day;
זאל דורכגעמען און נרגש ווערן בכל רגע ורגע שביום;
in every single moment of the day he must ask "Me'eimasai,"
when is the time for Kriyas Shema,
and through this every moment becomes connected and permeated with the content of the matter of Kriyas Shema,
"Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad."
And as explained in many places, the matter of Kriyas Shema and prayer in general must illuminate throughout the entire day,
for this is the foundation and inner essence of all matters that a person does. Therefore one prays and recites Kriyas Shema every day,
and the intention in this is that the prayer and Kriyas Shema should be drawn forth throughout the entire day.
And that which we find that Rabbi Yehudah would pray from thirty days to thirty days because he was occupied with the study of Torah93 –
this is because his prayer was in a manner of "a continuous action" over all thirty days,
and not merely in a manner that he performs the action once and afterwards relies that from this there will be a continuous action,
but rather he constantly strives that the action of prayer itself should be in every single day,
as if he were actually praying every single day.
As an example, this is regarding the blessing of the Torah:
Even though one recites the blessing only once a day,
one need not recite a blessing again each time one studies Torah,
because the blessing of the Torah in the morning is drawn forth over the entire day94,
and not merely in a manner that he recites the blessing itself only once and afterwards relies that this will be drawn forth on its own,
for it is insufficient to say that a blessing is needed only for the first matter in Torah that one studies and not for the other matters,
but rather the blessing itself is drawn forth throughout the day,
meaning that each time he goes to study Torah he feels the content of the blessing,
as if he were reciting the blessing again at that moment.
From this we see that the matter of prayer and Kriyas Shema must illuminate in all times,
in all days and in every single moment of the day.
And in addition to this, that "Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad" permeates him entirely in every single moment –
he also influences others,
that they should be permeated with it in every single moment.
And in addition to this, that it permeates time,
every single moment,
it must also permeate place,
every single place –
as the explanation of "Echad"95,
that the Alef of Alufo shel Olam permeates the seven firmaments and the earth
(the Chet)
and the four directions of the world.
That is, that from the point of the time of Kriyas Shema
("Me'eimasai korin es Shema ba'aravim")
there is an expansion –
that the matter of Kriyas Shema is drawn forth in all times and in all the world and all the worlds.
And in this itself, he can always add more expansion –
"bechol levavcha uvechol nafshecha uvechol me'odecha,"
as it is stated in Kriyas Shema,
in which "bechol levavcha etc." it is always possible to add.
The explanation of the matter will be understood based on the story about the old Rebbe with R' Avraham HaMalach
(the son of the Maggid)
in connection with the explanation in "Me'eimasai":
The Alter Rebbe and R. Avraham the Angel studied together. The Alter Rebbe studied Nigleh with R. Avraham, and R. Avraham studied the inner dimension of the Torah with the Alter Rebbe96. They began studying from the beginning of the Shas.
When they studied the first Mishnah –
"From when may one recite the Shema in the evening?"
The Alter Rebbe interpreted it simply according to Nigleh –
When is the time for the evening Shema. Then R. Avraham explained the inner meaning of this –
That "me'eimasai" is from the term "eimah" (awe)97,
with awe, fear, trembling, and dread. And the Alter Rebbe accepted this interpretation.
From this it follows,
that R. Avraham revealed the concept of expansion in the word "me'eimasai":
The simple interpretation according to Nigleh of "me'eimasai" is –
as the Alter Rebbe explained –
that it indicates a point in time,
the time of the Shema
(as above).
But R. Avraham revealed,
that the word and single point of "me'eimasai" does not remain merely a point,
rather it has the meaning of awe and fear –
which signifies an entire concept in the service of man.
That is, from the word and single point of "me'eimasai" becomes a matter of expansion.
And the explanation of this:
The foundation for R. Avraham's interpretation
(that "me'eimasai" is from the term awe and fear)
also exists in Nigleh:
R. Yeshayah of Trani writes in his introduction to the Shas98
(as printed at the beginning of the Shas99 in several editions)
explaining the reason why the Shas was arranged
(which begins with "Seder Zeraim")
to start with Tractate Berachos,
for seemingly Tractate Berachos is more connected to "Seder Moed" than to "Seder Zeraim",
because it discusses the prayers of Shabbos and Yom Tov, etc.,
and the beginning of Tractate Berachos –
"From when may one recite the Shema, etc." is a matter concerning the time of the Shema,
a matter of times,
which is more connected to "Seder Moed"
(than to Seder Zeraim)?
He explains the reason for this: "The beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem100,
therefore the order of our holy Sages was to begin the order of the Mishnah with the unity of the Holy One, blessed be He, and to accept upon oneself the yoke of the kingdom of heaven and the yoke of Torah and the commandments, evening and morning, etc."
And based on this, there is a foundation in Nigleh for the inner interpretation of "me'eimasai" as from the term awe and fear –
because the entire content of "From when may one recite the Shema in the evening?" is the concept of fear of Hashem,
and therefore the Shas begins with it –
"The beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem."
However, R. Avraham the Angel revealed,
that this
(awe and fear)
is the meaning of the word "me'eimasai",
which until then had not been revealed as the meaning of the word "me'eimasai":
R. Avraham did not reveal that there must be fear of Hashem,
simply. That was already known from before –
as explicit in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah.
And likewise, the explanation of R. Yeshayah of Trani that the Shas begins with the Mishnah "From when may one recite the Shema" because "The beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem" already existed before;
ועד"ז איז שוין פריער געווען דער ביאור פון ר' ישעי' מטראני אז ש"ס הויבט זיך אן מיט דער משנה "מאימתי קורין את שמע" ווייל "ראשית חכמה יראת ה'";
R. Avraham revealed that this is the meaning of the word "me'eimasai".
That is, he revealed the concept of expansion in the word and single point of "me'eimasai" –
that it is from the term awe and fear.
And in fear itself –
it is a fear that is the foundation and beginning of the entire Torah101,
as per R. Yeshayah's interpretation,
"The beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem." Therefore the entire Oral Torah begins with it:
The concept that the performance of the commandments leads to fear –
is stated in the Written Torah102:
"And Hashem commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Hashem",
and regarding this fear it is said "If there is no wisdom, there is no fear"103. In our matter, the innovation is that "If there is no fear, there is no wisdom",
because "The beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem",
and this is the innovation in that the Oral Torah begins with "From when may one recite the Shema in the evening?",
and with the word "me'eimasai" from the term awe and fear –
that one must have the introduction of fear
("me'eimasai")
before the entire Torah.
This further brings out the expansion that exists in "me'eimasai" –
that "me'eimasai" is not merely a matter of service,
rather it is the foundation and beginning of all service.
And based on this –
then "from when" begins the fear that is the foundation and beginning of all service –
one will also understand how this is connected with the simple explanation
(as the Alter Rebbe taught)
in "from when" –
when is the time for Kriat Shema:
The novelty in this is,
that "from when" in its meaning of time becomes in a manner of "from when" in its meaning of awe and fear.
That is, in every moment of time
[for "from when" asks about every moment of time when is the time for Kriat Shema,
as above]
is permeated with Kriat Shema and with fear of Hashem.
And as discussed above,
that one must draw down the matter of Kriat Shema
(prayer)
throughout the entire day,
and here we have the addition
(according to the explanation that "from when" is from the term awe and fear),
that the Kriat Shema which is drawn down throughout the entire day must be permeated with fear of Hashem.
Until one draws down "from when",
fear of Hashem among other Jews,
and in the entire world.
And the order in this is –
that one begins with the simple meaning,
the simple explanation of "from when", time,
and afterwards one expands upon it,
"from when" from the term awe and fear.
As the order in this was in the story of the Alter Rebbe and R. Avraham. Seemingly:
Since the Alter Rebbe agreed and accepted R. Avraham's explanation of "from when",
why did he himself not begin with it?
The explanation in this is –
simply:
The order is that first and foremost one teaches a matter simply. And especially when it concerns a Mishnah and halachah,
where one must simply know the law. As in our matter –
"From when may one recite the Shema in the evening?" –
one must first explain that this simply means the time for Kriat Shema.
If one would immediately explain "from when" from the term awe –
one would not have the law of when is the time for Kriat Shema
("from the time that the priests enter to eat their terumah",
or according to the other opinions in the Mishnah)!
One must first teach "from when" according to its simple meaning,
and only afterwards can one add the inner explanation of this.
And as is understood simply,
that when one comes to ask a rabbi two questions:
one question –
whether one must recite Kriat Shema at its proper time and when is its proper time,
and a second question –
whether one must recite Kriat Shema with fear of Hashem –
he will certainly answer that one must do both things. But if he must answer one question before the other –
the law is105 that he must first answer the question that is time-bound,
and in our case he must first answer that one must recite Kriat Shema at its proper time and the time is such and such,
and only afterwards that one must recite it with fear. If he would first answer that one must recite it with fear –
one might have fear of Heaven but meanwhile the time for Kriat Shema would pass and one would not know when to actually recite Kriat Shema!
From this it is understood,
that even when a Chassidic teacher teaches a ten-year-old the Mishnah "From when may one recite the Shema in the evening?",
even though he knows the inner explanation that this is from the term awe,
no matter how great a Chassid he is,
he will first explain it according to its simple meaning,
in connection with the time for Kriat Shema,
and only afterwards say the inner explanation.
And therefore the order in the aforementioned story was,
that first the Alter Rebbe explained "from when" according to its simple meaning,
regarding the time for Kriat Shema,
and afterwards R. Avraham explained the inner explanation of this,
and the Alter Rebbe accepted it.
And after R. Avraham revealed the explanation –
the matter of expansion in the point of "from when" –
it becomes a lesson for everyone,
that every Jew must reveal that every moment and every point of his should be in a manner of expansion –
permeated with fear of Hashem.
And even though R. Avraham already revealed the matter of expansion
(in "from when") –
nevertheless, in this very matter each one must add further expansion of his own,
"with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might",
for no matter how much expansion one has,
even the expansion of the greatest of the great which is an expansion in the manner of "with all your might",
one can always add more to it,
and as follows.
To summarize:
Standing in this Shabbat between Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev, every Jew –
both the simple people and the heads of your tribes –
has the instruction,
that in all the matters of the Alter Rebbe that stand in a manner of a point,
and in general –
in all matters of a point –
one must draw down the matter of expansion,
"expanses of the river",
similar to how it was by the Mitteler Rebbe.
And the expansion must be drawn down not only upon oneself,
but also upon one's household and upon one's students and also –
in all one's conduct,
because in addition to this being relevant to him himself,
his students and those influenced learn from it,
as the Gemara relates106 that "from the conduct of Rabban Gamliel we learned etc.",
therefore it is relevant that also his speech and conduct towards the outside should be proper, out of expansion, in the manner like the law is regarding Kiddush Hashem,
that there his intention is not relevant,
rather how the surrounding people interpret it etc.107].
And even if he claims that he already has expansion in his service –
everyone understands,
that no matter how much expansion he has,
even if he is from "the heads of your tribes" –
it does not reach the expansion as it was by the Mitteler Rebbe,
which indeed he cannot attain,
but something similar to this is demanded of him.
Therefore it is understood,
that however much expansion he already has,
even if it is in a manner of "with all your might" –
he can add more to it,
until a manner that is beyond measure and limitation,
and also then there are levels within the boundless itself
(as discussed many times).
And this matter everyone understands without this,
all the more so one from "the heads of your tribes":
He knows that he is a soul in a body. Furthermore:
The entire matter that he fulfills Torah and mitzvos and rules on halachos –
is specifically because he is a soul in a body,
a soul above without a body cannot fulfill mitzvos and cannot rule on halachos,
[and as discussed in the farbrengen of the previous Shabbos108,
that in this lies the question whether the halacha is like Rabba bar Nachmani109 (that if there is doubt whether the bright spot preceded the white hair –
it is pure)110 or not111:
If he was a soul in a body at the time he ruled the halacha,
for only then did he have the power to rule,
therefore the halacha is like him,
but if his ruling came after the departure of his soul,
the halacha is not like him112.
And one may add to this:
It is explicit in the Gemara that his ruling came at the moment of the departure of his soul,
not before and not after
(because then there would be no question).
Thus one could say,
that the question of whether the halacha is like him depends on the inquiry in halacha regarding "the place of the cut"113:
After one cuts an object into two parts,
it is understood that the part that is on this side has the law of this side,
and the part that is on the other side has the law of that side;
און דער חלק וואס געפינט זיך בצד השני האט דעם דין פון דעם צד;
but a question arises what is the law of the place of the cut,
which is neither here nor there –
to which side does it belong.
Similarly is the question regarding the "time of the cut" of the soul and body of Rabba bar Nachmani,
the moment of the departure of the soul from the body,
whether at that time he has the status of a soul in a body,
and then the halacha is like him,
or not*113].
And since he is a soul in a body,
he understands that he is limited,
and however much expansion he has,
even in a manner of "with all your might",
it is still "your might",
and in this one can always add more and more.
What this is,
as mentioned,
is the instruction of this Shabbat between Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev –
give to the wise and he will become wiser,
and with addition –
that the service must be fulfilled with joy and goodness of heart.
And all the more so and a fortiori from this, that all matters of service of Hashem must be fulfilled with joy and goodness of heart,
as is known the explanation of the Arizal on this114 on the verse115 "because you did not serve Hashem your G-d with joy and goodness of heart",
as the Alter Rebbe brings in Tanya116,
and as the ruling of the Rambam at the end of the laws of Lulav that "the joy that a person rejoices in the performance of a mitzvah etc. is a great service",
until a manner of "dancing and leaping before Hashem,
with all strength"117.
[And it is known the question that is asked about this:
Why does the Alter Rebbe specifically bring from the AriZal,
and not from the explicit ruling in the Rambam who lived hundreds of years before the AriZal.
And elsewhere we have discussed this at length 118].
All the more so in recent times –
there must be an increase in joy,
as has been discussed many times 119.
All the more so on a day that is connected with the festival of Yud Kislev and the "Festival of Festivals" –
Yud-Tes Kislev 120,
then certainly there must be joy
(for a festival is about joy).
And especially since this is a matter connected with expansion
("Rechovos HaNahar"),
which is indeed the essence of joy –
breaking boundaries 121. So if in all matters there must be joy,
then certainly there must be joy in a matter connected with a festival and the Festival of Festivals and expansion.
And especially since we are on the day of Shabbos –
of which "And on the day of your rejoicing –
these are the Shabbosos" 122,
and on Shabbos itself –
at the time of Ra'ava d'Ra'avin,
"the inheritance 123 of Yaakov" 124,
which is "an inheritance without boundaries" 125.
So from all this it is understood that the joy must be a joy that is above all measure and limitation.
And since we are lacking all these matters –
we certainly have the powers for this,
for "I do not ask of them except according to their power" 126,
and certainly the Holy One, blessed be He, is his helper 127 and assists him etc. to fulfill these matters with joy in completeness.
Until we reach the ultimate perfection of joy –
in the future redemption,
when it will be "and eternal joy upon their heads" 128,
speedily in our days, literally immediately.
In addition to the general matter
(discussed above)
of this Shabbos between Yud Kislev and Yud-Tes Kislev –
there is another thing in this Shabbos,
also an essential matter –
according to the well-known teaching of the Alter Rebbe 129 that one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion
(and especially with the portion of today),
and on this Shabbos –
it is Parshas Vayishlach.
In this portion there are many matters,
up to infinite matters,
and among them –
also general matters. But it has been said many times,
that the entire portion and all the matters in it are included in the name of the portion –
"Vayishlach". For this is the name of the entire portion,
and all the matters in the portion are called by this name.
That is, the word "Vayishlach" expresses the content of the entire portion. This proves that the name of the portion
("Vayishlach")
contains within itself a great light,
which includes within itself many
(up to infinite)
matters of the portion.
Furthermore:
The word "Vayishlach"
(like every word in the Torah)
pertains not only to this portion but to the entire Torah as a whole.
As we see in the story in the Zohar 130
[which is said in "Meneh Lashon" when one goes to the gravesite of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and the like],
that because in a Sefer Torah there was an extra Vav in "Veshis'as Shisa" 131,
this caused the sleepers of Chevron,
who are generally the ultimate of mercy,
not to have mercy,
even on those who, were it not for this deficiency in the Sefer Torah, would have been worthy of having mercy upon them.
And all this –
because there was one extra letter,
and especially a letter in the word "Veshis'as Shisa",
a matter of the opposite of purity *131,
for if it were a word connected with purity, it would be understandable that it affects the entire Torah,
but here it is about a matter of the opposite of purity. And it is not the simple explanation that a letter was missing –
nothing was missing,
and on the contrary –
a letter was added to the Torah,
which is seemingly a virtue –
nevertheless, the extra Vav affected the entire Sefer Torah as a whole,
and affected the sleepers of Chevron and the Jews who came to them to such an extent, so great is the precision of every letter in the Torah,
no less and no more.
So if this is the case with even one letter in the Torah,
all the more so a word,
all the more so the name of the portion –
certainly pertains to the entire Torah as a whole,
all the more so to the portion of which it is the name,
for the entire portion is included in this name.
In the matter of "Vayishlach" itself, there are many interpretations. However, one must first of all begin with the interpretation according to the simple meaning –
for in every matter one begins with the simple meaning and concludes with the simple meaning;
ווארום אין יעדער ענין הויבט מען אן מיט פשט און מ'פארענדיקט מיט פשט;
the simple meaning is the foundation of all modes of study. And the explanation:
Of all these modes of study
(plain meaning, allusion,
homiletic interpretation, secret)
the study according to the plain meaning is
the lowest level,
corresponding to the world of Action132. But together with this, the lowest level is also the foundation upon which all the levels above it stand.
For example, in a building that has many stories:
Specifically the lowest story is the foundation upon which all the higher stories stand. And in that lowest story itself –
the foundation is not the roof
(the "ceiling")
or the walls,
but the floor,
the lowest level within the lowest story132.
So too regarding the modes of Torah study:
Although study according to the plain meaning is the lowest level
(corresponding to the world of Action),
it is specifically this that is the foundation upon which all the higher modes of study stand
(allusion, homiletic interpretation, and secret).
Therefore one begins with study according to the plain meaning and concludes with study according to the plain meaning,
meaning that even when one studies the higher modes of study,
even the highest level –
the study of Kabbalah
(secret) –
the principle still applies that "the verse does not depart from its plain meaning"133,
because the plain meaning is the foundation of all
(the higher)
modes of Torah study.
From this it is also understood regarding our subject –
that the lesson of "Vayishlach" must be, first and foremost, according to the plain meaning.
To this comes an additional emphasis:
When one studies in the Torah about the events that occurred with our father Yaakov,
or with the other Patriarchs, etc. –
a simple question arises:
When one counts the matters that an ordinary decent person,
even a non-Jew,
and certainly a Jew,
has accomplished during his lifetime of 147 years –
this is incomparably more than what is told about our father Yaakov in the entire Torah,
including –
the Written Torah,
the Oral Torah,
Midrashim,
the Zohar, etc.!
Certainly when it comes to the Patriarchs,
for regarding them
(regarding Avraham,
and likewise regarding the other Patriarchs)
it is said "advanced in days"134,
as explained in the Zohar135,
that their days were "complete days" –
it is certain that our father Yaakov accomplished incomparably more matters than what is told about him in the Torah
(in all the aforementioned parts of the Torah)!
One must say that the Torah does not tell about all the matters that he accomplished. One must understand the reason for this.
The explanation of this is:
Torah is from the word "teaching"136. The Torah tells only those matters about Yaakov
(and likewise about the other people who appear in the Torah)
that are teachings for people in later generations.
And within this itself there is a distinction regarding where the matter appears in the Torah:
There are matters about Yaakov that are told in the Written Torah. But there are other matters that are told only in Midrash or the Zohar, etc.,
and they do not appear explicitly in the Written Torah.
According to the above
(that the Torah tells only matters that are teachings)
the distinction is understandable:
The matters that are told in the Zohar –
are a teaching primarily for those Jews who are on the level of study according to the secret,
but not so for Jews who are below this
(who do not study the Zohar).
And likewise, the things that appear in Midrash are a teaching primarily for those who are on the level of homiletic interpretation
(and above this).
However, the matters that appear explicitly in the plain meaning of the verses in the Written Torah –
which pertain to all Jews,
as above that the world of plain meaning is the lowest level –
are a teaching for all Jews without exception.
And it is known that in study according to the plain meaning, all matters are revealed,
clearly,
so that all may understand them. As this is regarding halachah:
It is obvious and simple that a rav must issue a clear halachah so that one knows how to conduct oneself in practice,
consequently he cannot issue a halachah in an allusive manner and rely that one will understand the allusion and the acronyms, etc.,
with riddles and twists, etc.
Thus it is also understood regarding the subject of "Vayishlach Yaakov" which is told explicitly in the plain meaning of the verses –
that from this there must be a teaching for all Jews. And as will follow
(section 27).
Before proceeding to the lesson of "Vayishlach" in the simple sense of the matters –
there is a "strong question"
(which one does not grasp)
on what is explained in the discourses of Chassidus regarding the matter of "Vayishlach Yaakov":
In the discourses of Chassidus137 it is explained,
that "Vayishlach Yaakov malachim before him to Esav his brother etc."138 because Yaakov had already completed his clarifications and was ready for the redemption,
and moreover –
"Yaakov thought that Esav had already been clarified and had returned to his lofty root in the aspect of the encompassing lights of Tohu that preceded the rectification",
therefore Yaakov sent malachim
("actual malachim"139)
to "Esav his brother"
(thinking that Esav had already been clarified)
in order to draw down the encompassing lights of Tohu into the aspect of rectification
(the level of Yaakov).
In actuality, however, it turned out not as Yaakov had thought:
"And the malachim returned to Yaakov saying, 'We came to your brother, to Esav, and moreover he is coming toward you and four hundred men with him'"140 –
the malachim said to Yaakov:
"Although according to your reasoning it is very fitting and proper that the aspect of the encompassing light of Tohu etc. should be drawn to you,
but what can be done, for the hindrance is from your brother Esav, who is still below in the aspect of brokenness and has not been clarified at all",
and the proof of this
(that he had not yet been clarified)
"and moreover he is coming toward you and four hundred men with him",
which are aspects of harsh judgments,
which fell very low from the four hundred shekels of silver etc.
(as explained in the discourses).
And only after the malachim informed Yaakov of this –
"From then Yaakov knew that it is impossible for Esav to bestow upon him from his root the encompassing light of Tohu which he seeks, since he himself is below etc."
It is entirely incomprehensible:
It is explained in Chassidus141 that the attribute of Yaakov is the attribute of truth,
as it is written142 "You shall give truth to Yaakov",
and as explained in this regard143,
that it is not the interpretation that Avraham and Yitzchak are not aspects of truth, Heaven forbid,
rather in truth itself –
Yaakov's attribute is truth,
with him there is an even higher level in truth. For Yaakov is the central line,
the "middle bar that passes through from one end to the other, from the highest levels and degrees to the lowest of all degrees,
and in every level and degree it passes through the middle point which is the point and aspect of its attribute of truth"144.
That is, that the attribute of Yaakov
(the attribute of truth)
passes through from one end to the other, from the very top to the very bottom, and does not become smaller or diminished,
but just as it is truth above, so it is truth below,
and in every world the truth is according to that world.
That is, that all matters of Yaakov are truth,
all the more so the matters that are explicitly stated in the Torah,
and in the Torah itself –
in the Written Torah.
The question arises:
Since Yaakov's attribute is truth –
how can it be that he did not see the truth regarding Esav and it seemed to him that Esav had already been clarified and that Esav was "his brother",
until the malachim informed him that it is not as you said,
and not only that Esav had not yet been clarified,
but "he is coming toward you and four hundred men with him"
(and in the language of Rashi145:
"I thought he was my brother, but he treats you as the wicked Esav, he is still in his hatred")?!
And one cannot answer that Yaakov saw the truth of how Esav is above
(in his root) –
because as stated,
the function of the attribute of truth of Yaakov is not merely truth,
but truth that passes through from one end to the other,
and in every world he sees the truth as the truth is in that world
(not in the world above it),
so at the time of "Vayishlach Yaakov malachim etc. to Esav his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom",
Yaakov should have seen the truth of Esav here below –
how Esav is here below as a soul in a body
(in the land of Seir),
that he had not yet been clarified
(and not only how Esav is from the aspect of his root above) *?!
Nevertheless –
from this there is a lesson for each individual:
First of all –
since the name of the parshah consists only of the word "Vayishlach",
and it does not matter who sent and to whom he sent etc.,
it is understood that the lesson must consist of the very concept of "Vayishlach":
First of all, every Jew must constantly send emissaries,
not taking into account all the obstacles and delays connected with it.
And after one knows the essential lesson that there must be "Vayishlach",
one then details the particulars in this,
who sent the emissaries,
where he must send them etc.:
"And Yaakov sent messengers":
Yaakov is, of course, Yaakov Avinu. Just as a father bequeaths to his son all five levels
(enumerated in the Mishnah146),
which include all levels
(as is understood from the very fact that the Mishnah enumerates only the levels).
And among the Patriarchs themselves –
Yaakov is "the chosen of the Patriarchs"147,
chosen as a father. From this it is understood,
that with Yaakov Avinu it is even more emphasized how he bequeaths to his son all the levels.
*) The explanation of this –
in the sichah of Shabbos Parshas Vayeishev
(in Sefer HaSichos 5746 vol. 2)
section 24 and onward.
And since it was "And Yaakov sent"
[which is, of course, a directive for every Jew,
as above, that every matter stated in the Written Torah is a directive for every Jew] –
it is understood that Yaakov bequeaths and imparts power to every Jew in the service of "and he sent",
that every Jew should have the power to send emissaries.
And where must one send the emissaries –
"to Esav his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom":
"To Esav his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom" alludes to a Jew who stands in the lowest state –
on the level of "Esav",
with all the explanations thereof,
and is found in "the land of Seir, the field of Edom",
which is called "Edom" because of that which Esav asked Yaakov, "Pour into me now some of that red, red stuff"
(the red lentil stew)
148 and because of this he sold him the birthright,
"and Esav despised the birthright"149,
from this it is understood that this indicates the lowest state.
And with this comes the directive of "And Yaakov sent messengers before him to Esav his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom":
A Jew must send emissaries
(and he has the power for this from Yaakov Avinu)
to every place where there are Jews,
even to those Jews who are currently on the level of "Esav",
and they are found in "the land of Seir, the field of Edom" –
to arouse them in matters of Judaism,
and to prepare them to go and greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
And the reason for this is because although outwardly that Jew stands on the level of "Esav" and is found in "the land of Seir, the field of Edom" –
nevertheless he is "his brother",
he must have Ahavas Yisrael for him,
As explained in Tanya, chapter 32:
"Since they all correspond and have one Father to them all, therefore all Yisrael are called actual brothers from the aspect of the root of their souls in the one Hashem, only the bodies are separate",
and when for him his soul is primary and his body secondary, he has true Ahavas Yisrael for every Jew,
not looking at his body and external form,
for from the aspect of his soul he is "his brother",
as is simply understood,
that when he feels that the other Jew is "his brother", he does not seek to shout at him and the like,
but rather he seeks to love him and wants to go with him to greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu!
Afterwards he says in Tanya further:
"And this is what Hillel the Elder said150 regarding the fulfillment of this mitzvah, 'This is the entire Torah, and the rest is commentary, etc.',
for the foundation and root of the entire Torah is to elevate and raise the soul above the body, etc." And this also includes the explanation,
that when you go to seek an explanation in any matter of the Torah –
how can you find it? Through Ahavas Yisrael,
for "and the rest is commentary",
every matter in the Torah is a commentary on Ahavas Yisrael!
This is the directive of "And Yaakov sent messengers, etc."
And in this comes the directive from the fact that this is Shabbos Parshas Vayishlach:
On Shabbos Parshas Vayishlach we read the entire parshah,
corresponding to all seven days of the week,
all of which is included in the name of the parshah –
"Vayishlach". It is understood that the directive of "Vayishlach" is a directive not only for one day or for several days,
but for all seven days of the week,
which is a complete cycle151 that includes all times,
which is why afterwards we begin again from "Hayom yom rishon" etc.152.
And in this very matter is the directive,
that it is not the simple meaning that each day must have "Vayishlach" in the same manner,
but rather when the next day comes there must be "ascending in holiness"153,
That is, that each day one must continue sending emissaries,
and even if the service was complete on the first day,
he must do the service on the morrow in a more elevated manner,
because then the completeness of the previous day is not sufficient.
Similar to what has been discussed many times regarding the directive of the Chanukah lights.
This is the lesson with which one must live on this Shabbat,
Parshat Vayishlach,
which falls between Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev –
that every Jew must send emissaries to every place where other Jews are found,
even those who are still in the category of "Esav" and are located in "the land of Seir, the field of Edom,"
and prepare him for the redemption through Mashiach Tzidkeinu,
because that Jew is "his brother."
And this lesson has a special connection to Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev –
for the Shabbat of Parshat Vayishlach comes in between them:
It is known what the master of the redemption of Yud Tes Kislev154 and the master of the redemption of Yud Gimmel Kislev said,
that Chassidus is not for any one faction,
but rather it is for all Jews.
[Indeed, it is called "Chassidus," which seemingly implies it is only for chassidim,
but in truth it is for all Jews].
And the reason for this is simply understood:
Since the coming of Mashiach depends on "Your springs shall spread forth outward"155,
and every Jew without exception must be redeemed from exile –
therefore every Jew,
even a Jew who is found in the "outward,"
must have a connection with the wellsprings of Chassidus.
And may it be His will that this be actualized –
that through the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
and the service of "And Yaakov sent messengers before him to Esav his brother,"
and especially as we stand in the month of Kislev,
with all its virtues,
due to its combination etc.,
and especially –
in the days close to Yud Tes Kislev and Yud Gimmel Kislev –
may this bring about the actual coming of Mashiach Tzidkeinu,
and he will teach Torah to the entire people156,
the inner dimension of the Torah,
"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth,"
speedily in our actual days.
Maamar (similar to a sicha)
beginning "Mergala beFumei deRava etc."
[Continuing from what was said at the conclusion of the maamar regarding the matter of "supporters of Torah" – he said:]
What was said above
(in the maamar)
also has a connection with the gathering that takes place this week in connection with "Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim."
The founder of the yeshivah –
who is enduring in a constant manner
(as the founder of the yeshivah)
even now,
similar to the Almighty,
of whom it is said "the righteous are similar to their Creator"157 –
said,
that the task of the yeshivah students is to be "lamps to give light"158,
and to be "those who go out to the war of the House of David"159,
to wage war against those "who have reproached the footsteps of Your anointed"160 until the manner of "Amen and Amen"161,
as is known his sicha162 "All who go out to the war of the House of David,"
and as has been discussed many times163 that now this is the task of all Jews.
And the beginning of this is through the matter of "supporters of Torah,"
that one gives charity to support the yeshivah.
And may it be His will that the gathering in connection with this be with great success,
and that one give charity even more than one decided to give. As explained regarding the virtue of charity in the Igros Kodesh of the Alter Rebbe,
a part of which is printed in the Tanya.
Similarly, on Motzaei Shabbat this week there will be a "Melaveh Malkah" in connection with "Nerot Shabbat Kodesh."
And the first time that the matter of Shabbat candles is mentioned in the Torah164 –
it is specifically stated regarding the candles of a little girl of three years old164,
Rivkah,
and from this we derive the law regarding Sarah!
And in connection with this, there will be a "Melaveh Malkah" on Motzaei Shabbat this week. And as has been discussed many times165,
that "Melaveh Malkah" does not mean that Shabbat is found in a separate place,
but rather the simple meaning of "Melaveh Malkah,"
that the "escort" is together with the Shabbat Queen165.
That is, that during the "Melaveh Malkah" one has Shabbat with him.
And in addition, it has the virtue that this is "the meal of King David, Mashiach,"
as it states in the Siddur of the Arizal166,
and every siddur is something that is equal for every soul.
And as usual,
in order to include all those present here in the gatherings –
we distribute mashkeh from the farbrengen for the gatherings.
Regarding the "dinner" of the yeshivah –
mashkeh was already distributed last Shabbat;
האט מען שוין געטיילט משקה בשבת שעברה;
now we will distribute mashkeh for the "Melaveh Malkah" in connection with "Neshek." And one should also announce regarding the time and place etc.
And since it is Shabbat, one should distribute a portion of the mashkeh here,
and the rest –
at the "Melaveh Malkah,"
the meal of King David, Mashiach.
And may it be His will that from this talk about Mashiach there should already be the main thing,
and on the contrary –
this is the entire matter about which we speak –
the coming of Mashiach Tzidkeinu,
in the manner of "I will hasten it"167,
"and behold, with the clouds of heaven"168,
speedily in our actual days.
After the announcement about the dinner of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim Lubavitch,
the Rebbe Shlita gave a bottle of mashke to R. Shneur Zalman G. Shach –
for the Melaveh Malkah for the benefit of Nshei Ubnos Chabad.
And afterwards he began to sing "Veharikosi Lachem Berachah".
Since it is a good custom to speak about matters
(a matter in Rashi's commentary etc.) –
even though the vow was annulled on Erev Rosh Hashanah,
this does not mean that one may not fulfill it! Since one can fulfill it and it is a good thing –
why should one not do it?!
And due to the shortness of time –
we will only ask questions on a matter in Rashi's commentary,
on condition that it should be "Give to the wise and he will become wiser" to explain the matter,
and also to dwell on a matter in the notes of the Tatte on the Zohar,
and a matter in the daily study of the Rambam.
We will dwell on the beginning of the Chumash lesson
(from Thursday),
the fifteenth of Kislev
[when "the moon stands in its fullness"].
There it states:
"And Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land."
Rashi explains the reason why it says here "And Dinah the daughter of Leah –
and not the daughter of Jacob,
rather because of her going out she is called the daughter of Leah, for she too was a goer-out, as it is said 'And Leah went out to meet him'",
and according to several versions Rashi adds:
"And upon it they coined the proverb: Like mother, like daughter."
The one who is five years old for Mikra asks:
He knows of the principle that "The memory of the righteous is a blessing"
[as Rashi explained earlier].
And based on this he does not understand:
How does the verse come here
(according to Rashi's commentary)
to emphasize a matter of the opposite of merit and blessing for Leah –
that Dinah's going out,
which afterwards brought about the undesirable thing,
is on account of Leah
("Dinah the daughter of Leah")
who "she too
(Leah)
was a goer-out"?!
True indeed,
from this emerges a defense for Dinah,
that the undesirable thing which afterwards happened through her going out is not her fault,
rather it is connected with the fact that she is "the daughter of Leah",
and especially since Dinah was then only six years old,
a minor who is not obligated in commandments;
א קטנה שאינה מחוייבת במצוות;
but thereby "they cast" the entire matter of the opposite of merit upon Leah –
the opposite of the principle of "The memory of the righteous is a blessing"!
The question becomes even stronger according to the version that Rashi adds "And upon it they coined the proverb: Like mother, like daughter." That is,
that the matter
(that Dinah's going out is on account of her mother's going out)
is not relevant only to this matter,
rather "they coined the proverb" –
for the nature of a proverb is that it gives understanding of a matter also to simple people
(who are not able to understand the matter without the proverb) –
that this is a general lesson
(regarding all matters)
regarding "Like mother, like daughter." So how can one say that the verse emphasizes a matter of the opposite of merit and blessing of Leah –
as a general matter which is also a proverb for everyone?!
From this itself it is understood,
that the fact that the verse mentions here the name of Leah is not a matter of disgrace.
Another thing that requires explanation in this verse,
and Rashi does not address it,
is that which is stated here "to see the daughters of the land":
The entire story occurred in the city of Shechem,
as it says earlier that "And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem",
and as it is emphasized many times afterwards that the occurrence was with the people of Shechem.
Based on this it is understandable that the "And Dinah went out" was in the city of Shechem. It should have said here "And Dinah went out etc. to see the daughters of the city",
not "to see the daughters of the land";
ניט "לראות בבנות הארץ";
how come here
(in the city of Shechem)
the daughters of the entire land,
we do not find in the Chumash that a special event occurred here that brought the entire land to Shechem?

Also one must understand
(not in study according to the simple meaning, rather) –
in study according to the homiletic and mystical interpretation etc. –
the connection of the beginning of the Chumash lesson of the fifteenth of Kislev
("And Dinah went out etc.")
with the conclusion of the Chumash lesson
[as is known that "their end is embedded in their beginning and their beginning in their end"]
"And God said to him, Your name is Jacob; your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name; and He called his name Israel."
The connection of the conclusion of the Chumash lesson with the beginning of the portion –
is understandable:
It was previously discussed that in Chassidus it is explained that "And Yaakov sent messengers before him to Esav his brother" was because Yaakov had already reached the point of going toward the redemption,
and he thought that also Esav was ready,
he wanted to receive the lights of Tohu from the root of Esav etc.
That this is also the advantage of the name Yisrael over the name Yaakov
(the conclusion of the Chumash lesson of 15 Kislev):
"Yaakov" is connected to the matter of exile,
because "Yaakov" is on account of "and his hand was holding the heel
(and of whom – of)
Esav."
However, "Yisrael" is connected to the matter of redemption –
Yaakov's victory over the minister of Esav,
i.e., a redemption from the minister of Esav
(all the more so a redemption from the state of "holding the heel of Esav"),
until that on account of this, the minister of Esav himself blessed him and said "Your name shall no longer be called Yaakov, but Yisrael, for you have striven with G-d and with men and have prevailed."
And accordingly it emerges that the conclusion of the Chumash lesson,
"And G-d said to him, your name is Yaakov, your name shall no longer be called Yaakov, but Yisrael shall be your name, and He called his name Yisrael",
is connected to the matter of redemption –
which is discussed at the beginning of the portion.
One must still understand, however, the connection of this to the beginning of the Chumash lesson of 15 Kislev
("And Dinah went out etc.").
We seek, after all, to connect everything with Moshiach our righteousness –
there is a remark in the remarks of the father on the Zohar of our portion that speaks about David Melech HaMoshiach:
The father bases himself on what is stated in the Zohar that Adam HaRishon and the Patriarchs gave from their years to David Melech HaMoshiach,
"Avraham left him, and likewise Yaakov and Yosef." But "Yitzchak did not leave him anything, because David Melech HaMoshiach comes from the side of judgment." And one of the explanations of this is –
that the main building of the kingship of David Melech HaMoshiach is from the gevurot,
consequently he does not need to receive the gevurot of Yitzchak for this,
he has "enough" gevurot,
and he only needs to have the matter of the chassadim
(from Avraham)
and rachamim
(from Yaakov)
etc.
From this we have the lesson –
regarding the current redemption through Moshiach our righteousness,
David Melech HaMoshiach:
There are already enough gevurot and judgments,
and on the contrary –
there is more than enough...
until that one cries out "Until when?",
"Do not be silent and do not be still, G-d." Now one needs to have chassadim and rachamim from Avraham and Yaakov!
In the remark, however, he does not explain the instruction from this in the service of man –
and as will be explained in the coming farbrengen without a vow and without an obligation, but only in a manner of merit.
In today's Rambam lesson, one concludes the laws of Mikvaot. There the Rambam writes:
"It is a clear and revealed matter that the impurities and purifications are decrees of the Scripture etc.,
and likewise immersion from impurities is among the chukim, for it is not that the impurity is mud etc. that passes through water, but it is a decree of the Scripture etc.,
and nevertheless, there is a hint in the matter: just as one who directs his heart to become pure, once he immerses he is pure etc., so too one who directs his heart to purify his soul from impurities of the souls, which are thoughts of iniquity and evil opinions,
once he agrees in his heart to separate from those counsels and brings his soul into the waters of knowledge,
he is pure. Behold it says, 'And I will sprinkle upon you pure waters and you will be purified from all your impurities etc.'"
In this one also sees a connection with the future redemption:
"And I will sprinkle upon you pure waters etc." refers to the future redemption.
And one must explain one point in this Rambam lesson –
the matter that "immersion from impurities is among the chukim etc., it is a decree of the Scripture":
In immersion there are generally two modes –
immersion in a mikveh,
and immersion in a spring.
And it is understood that the matter that "immersion from impurities is among the chukim etc., it is a decree of the Scripture" –
applies to every matter of immersion,
both immersion in a mikveh and immersion in a spring.
But regarding immersion in a spring, this is even more emphasized –
for in immersion in spring waters one finds many wondrous things that are not understood intellectually
(and they are only from the aspect of a decree of the Scripture),
which one does not find regarding immersion in a mikveh:
A spring purifies in any amount,
and in flowing water
(and all the more so in still water).
However, a mikveh does not purify in any amount, but it must have forty se'ah,
and it does not purify in flowing water, only in still water.
Another wondrous thing regarding immersion in a spring that is not present regarding immersion in a mikveh:
The law is
(as the Rambam writes in the previous lessons):
"Drawn water is invalid for immersion,
and not only that, but a mikveh of water that is not drawn, into which three log of drawn water fell, invalidates everything." "How do drawn water invalidate the mikveh with three log,
that if the mikveh had less than forty seah and three log fell into it and completed it to forty seah, everything is invalid." And the only way for the mikveh to become kosher again –
is by replacing all the water,
so that certainly no three log of drawn water remain,
until even if "he added kosher water to it until the kosher water reached forty seah –
it remains in its invalidity until all the water that was in it goes out and the drawn water is reduced to less than three log."
This law, however, is only regarding a mikveh.
But regarding a spring –
this entire law does not apply:
if drawn water mixes into spring water –
it remains kosher with its full force,
it purifies with any amount and also with flowing water
[except in a case where drawn water mixed into the flowing water and the drawn water overwhelmed the flowing water –
then it does not purify with flowing water].
And it can purify a zav and zavah,
and if it is living water –
it can purify from impurity of the dead!
One sees from this that regarding immersion in a spring it is even more emphasized that this is a decree of the verse.
And behold,
the two modes of immersion –
in a mikveh and in a spring –
will also be in the future to come.
One may say,
that corresponding to the two modes in immersion
(in a mikveh and in a spring)
are the two designations brought in the future to come at the conclusion of tractate Yoma:
"Fortunate are you, Israel, before whom do you purify yourselves and who purifies you? Your Father in heaven, as it is said, 'And I will sprinkle upon you pure water and you will be purified'
[which verse the Rambam also brings at the conclusion of the Laws of Mikvaot,
as above],
and it says, 'The mikveh of Israel is the Lord; just as a mikveh purifies the impure, so too the Holy One, blessed be He, purifies Israel'":
"The mikveh of Israel is the Lord" corresponds to the aspect of immersion in a mikveh,
and "And I will sprinkle upon you pure water etc." corresponds to the aspect of immersion in a spring.
[And one may say that these two modes of purification will be in two levels and periods in the future to come,
and elsewhere further,
and about this we have spoken at length once in a "conclusion" on tractate Yoma].
And may it be His will that just as we are now at the conclusion of the Laws of Mikvaot,
which is also the conclusion of the entire Order of Purities,
a conclusion of all these laws regarding impurity and purity –
may it be so literally:
the conclusion of the impurity of the exile,
and the true and complete redemption will come,
when there will be completeness in all matters:
completeness of the people –
"with our young and with our old etc., with our sons and with our daughters",
completeness of the Torah and its commandments –
"their silver and their gold with them"
(spiritually),
and completeness of the land –
"a land which etc., the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year until the end of the year",
until in the manner of "for the Lord your God will enlarge your border".
And "awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust",
and the Alter Rebbe and the Mitteler Rebbe and the Rebbe the father-in-law among them,
and Moses and Aaron with them,
and speedily in our days, literally.
Afterward he said:
Those who need to recite a final blessing,
will certainly recite a final blessing.
