English translation 1
We are now standing at the beginning of 7 MarCheshvan,
We are now standing at the beginning of 7 MarCheshvan,
regarding the matter of this day, we have already elaborated in past years
(and this is also printed1),
according to what the Alter Rebbe explains in his Shulchan Aruch2,
regarding the request for rain,
"And give dew and rain for a blessing upon the face of the earth",
that "they begin to ask in Eretz Yisrael from the night of the 7th of MarCheshvan, because it is a land of mountains and needs rain immediately after the festival,
and it would be fitting to ask there immediately after the festival,
except that they delayed the request fifteen days after the festival,
so that3 the last of Israel who went up for the pilgrimage should reach his home at the Euphrates River, which is the most distant inhabited place from Jerusalem, and the rain should not detain him",
and the Alter Rebbe adds in the "Half-Circle" "and even after the destruction they would also gather from all the surroundings in Jerusalem for the pilgrimage,
as is done even today,
therefore the enactment of the Sages who instituted the request in Eretz Yisrael on the 7th of MarCheshvan was not nullified".
And from this it is understood,
that the day of 7 MarCheshvan is the conclusion of the pilgrimage,
when the "last of Israel who went up for the pilgrimage" arrives "at his home".
And as discussed at length in past years1 the unique quality of this day,
that then begins the service in the world,
the service of a dwelling place in the lower realms,
and also4 out of the unity of Israel.
And one may add to this:
After the Alter Rebbe brings the aforementioned law regarding 7 Cheshvan in Eretz Yisrael,
he says that "in Bavel and the like, which is not a land of mountains like Eretz Yisrael and does not need rain immediately after the festival - they begin on the night of the 60th after the Tekufah of Tishrei...
And our custom is like the inhabitants of Bavel in every place".
And he continues:
"And there are those who wondered and argued about this,
even though we follow the Sages of Bavel in every place and do as they do in a place where the Sages of Bavel and the Sages of Eretz Yisrael disagree,
because the Babylonian Talmud is primary,
this is in matters of prohibition and permission, obligation and exemption, and impurity and purity,
but in a matter dependent on the need of the hour...
it is fitting to follow the years and the places and the time,
for Bavel dwells on many waters and does not need rain until the 60th after the Tekufah...
but in these lands where the time of sowing is from mid-Tishrei onward...
why should we not do like the inhabitants of Eretz Yisrael who ask for rain on the 7th of MarCheshvan,
for in this matter there is no dispute between the inhabitants of Bavel and the inhabitants of Eretz Yisrael...
rather in Bavel they would do according to what was necessary for them and in Eretz Yisrael according to what was necessary for them etc.'".
And he concludes - "And regarding the halachah, this reasoning was not accepted,
for they have already customarily practiced from time immemorial in all the Diaspora of Israel in the diaspora to follow the inhabitants of Bavel in this".
And at first glance, the entire lengthy discussion is completely incomprehensible:
It is indeed known that the Alter Rebbe adds in his Shulchan Aruch also the reasons for the laws,
and as explained in the introduction to the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe, that in this consists the innovation of his Shulchan Aruch relative to the Shulchan Aruch of the Beis Yosef - that the Shulchan Aruch of the Beis Yosef is a summary and synopsis of the work "Beis Yosef" on the Tur
(where he writes all matters at length and with many reasons),
therefore he wrote his laws with extreme brevity, not bringing down any reasons,
but not so the Alter Rebbe, who wanted to write a work that is complete in itself,
not relying on any other works,
and as explained in the introduction5 that the Maggid chose him "to arrange all the rulings of the laws that come in the Shulchan Aruch and in all the later authorities in a clear language, a matter with reason".
But when does this apply - when it concerns a reason for a law that is the halachah,
a law that is accepted;
א הלכה וואס איז אנגענומען;
but here it concerns an opinion that was not accepted,
as he concludes "and regarding the halachah, this reasoning was not accepted" - why then does the Alter Rebbe elaborate so much on the reason of this opinion?!
It would indeed be appropriate to bring briefly the second opinion that was not accepted as halachah;
עס האט טאקע אן ארט אראפברענגען בקיצור די צווייטע דיעה וואס איז ניט אנגענומען געווארן להלכה;
but only the halachic conclusion of that opinion - but not the strong reasons of that opinion?
And the explanation of this according to the simple meaning and halachah can be said - because the Alter Rebbe brings in the continuation of the matter that there is a practical difference in halachah,
that one accepts like that opinion if he "erred" and the like.
And regarding our matter
(the instruction in the service of man of 7 Cheshvan)
one can say one of the explanations in this - according to the ethical path:
As discussed several times,
the service of the month of Tishrei is generally a matter of the unity of Israel and love of Israel,
for then all Jews stand together in Jerusalem,
as a city that is united together etc.6.
According to this, it follows
that from the 7th of Cheshvan onward,
after the conclusion of the pilgrimage festival,
every Jew arrives at his place and his work,
a matter of separation, seemingly.
And this is also expressed in the prayer for rain,
that until the 7th of Cheshvan the prayer of all Jews throughout the entire world is equal,
that there is no request for rains,
rather one says only "and grant a blessing",
but after this, on the night of the 7th of Cheshvan,
one sees a difference between the inhabitants of the Land of Israel and the inhabitants of the Diaspora,
a matter of separation.
But this is truly not a separation — because Jews in every place in the world conduct themselves according to the same law of the one Torah,
which the Torah says that there is a difference between the inhabitants of the Land of Israel and the inhabitants of the Diaspora.
In this, however, comes the emphasis according to the aforementioned opinion,
which the Alter Rebbe brings in a book of laws,
and explains that this is a strong law with a logical reason according to the law,
that truly there should not have been any difference between the inhabitants of the Land of Israel and the inhabitants of the Diaspora!
(Only from a secondary reason is the law not so.)
It follows,
that the matter of unity on this day
(which is expressed in the law in the Shulchan Aruch)
has within it the advantage of "the advantage of light from the darkness"7 and a document against which a protest was lodged and which was upheld in court8:
At a time when one stands on a day of the conclusion of the pilgrimage festival,
a day when the separation among Jews begins,
and a day when according to the law there indeed becomes a difference between the inhabitants of the Land of Israel and the inhabitants of the Diaspora — one emphasizes that truly according to the law there should be the matter of unity of all Jews,
and this has a strong and logical reason according to the law,
only from a custom and the like does one conduct oneself differently.
In addition to the aforementioned lesson in the unity of Israel and love of Israel that one learns from the aforementioned law in the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch — one finds an emphasis on the matter in the very subject that "they delayed the question fifteen days after the festival so that the last of Israel who ascended for the pilgrimage would reach his home."
This is seemingly not understood:
Here it speaks about a "last of Israel" who is located at the farthest end from Jerusalem,
so how is it that because of him one should change the prayer of all the children of Israel in the Land of Israel,
beginning from the Jews in Jerusalem?
Furthermore — the entire matter is "on the doubt",
because one cannot be certain whether this "last of Israel" who lives at the border of the Land of Israel even ascended for the pilgrimage,
both because of his place and because of his level and rank,
and especially since it could be that he has the exemption of "one who has no land does not ascend for the pilgrimage"8.
Furthermore:
Here it does not speak about a vital matter that pertains to the soul in a manner of life-threatening danger of this "last of Israel",
rather this is only a matter of lack of comfort,
that he should have an easy way going home.
The aforementioned difficulty becomes even stronger when one delves into the content of the prayer for rain:
The content of the prayer for rain is the request that the rains should come,
so that the fields and vineyards should give grain and fruits.
For these are the most vital needs — to have "bread to sustain man's heart"9,
for which, so that the bread should be in its time and properly, one needs rain.
Consequently, one has the "positive commandment to pray every day... one asks for his needs that he requires"
(as the Rambam says at the beginning of the Laws of Prayer10)
— to pray for the rains,
which simply is the content of the commandment to ask for needs at the time that one needs them,
not after the time.
In addition to this,
there is a positive commandment from the Torah "guard yourself and guard your soul very much"11,
"and you shall guard yourselves very much for your souls"12,
and as the Alter Rebbe brings in his Shulchan Aruch
(in the sixth section13 — according to the order in which it was later divided),
that "a person has no permission over his body at all...
to cause it pain with any pain"!
That is, not only may a Jew not cause pain to his soul — what is the novelty?!
Everyone understands the preciousness of the soul!
— Rather, even the body, which is a physical and material thing,
one might think "what is the big deal" if one causes it pain — the Alter Rebbe says that one may not cause pain even to the body,
for the reason of the matter is,
because the body is "the acquisition of the Holy One, blessed be He"14,
the "property" of the Most High.
And this is not specifically about causing pain to the body of a weak person;
און דאס רעדט זיך ניט דוקא וועגן מצער זיין דעם גוף פון א שוואכן מענטשן;
whoever it may be,
even a mightiest of the mighty,
one must give the body its needs
(indeed not in a manner of "glutton and drunkard" which is a prohibition from the Torah15,
but its needs that it requires)
- because it is "the acquisition of the Holy One, blessed be He".
One transfers to the Jew the mastery over the body regarding serving the Most High,
just as he is master over the entire world regarding serving the Most High - but when it comes to causing pain to the body, this is utterly impossible
(and one need not elaborate on such a simple matter)!
[If this is a matter connected to the soul,
like a fast for fear of Heaven and the like - then this is not a matter of pain,
it is a pleasure,
the small pain of the body is worthwhile for the great pleasure of the soul<sup>16</sup>;
איז כדאי דער צער קטן של הגוף בשביל הנאה גדולה של הנשמה 16;
but a matter of mere bodily pain is forbidden].
And as mentioned - this is not a "decree of the verse",
rather it has a simple reason,
because the body is "the acquisition of the Holy One, blessed be He"!
According to this, the aforementioned difficulty becomes very strong:
How does it happen,
that one pushes off the positive commandment from the Torah of requesting one's needs,
and also the matter of "and you shall greatly guard your souls" - because of the "lowest of Israel"!
And simply:
By the fact that one pushes off the prayer for rain,
i.e., one wants the rain to come later,
there will seemingly be a lack in the growth of grain and fruits in all of Eretz Yisrael,
there will be a lack in the "bread to sustain man's heart"9 - which is a matter of bodily needs and bodily pain simply.
And especially since the matter of the "lowest of Israel" is merely a doubt. For one does not know at all whether he indeed made the pilgrimage
(as above),
whereas the lack of rain in fields and vineyards and the consequences thereof are a certain thing,
consequently one has a certain obligation to rectify his needs so as not to cause bodily pain,
and a certain obligation of "requesting one's needs"
(as it brings in that section in the Shulchan Aruch itself that "one must ask...
rain")
- so how does one push off a certainty because of a doubt?!
And furthermore:
Not only does one say that one need not ask for rain until the 7th of Cheshvan,
rather one may not ask for rain at this time,
and if one asks, it becomes a whole question whether one fulfills with that prayer or one must complete it etc.
All of this must have an explanation according to Halacha!
Indeed,
this is a matter of love of Israel and unity of Israel and all the matters - but how can one push off for its sake a positive commandment from the Torah?
One must say,
that this is understood according to Halacha,
and as follows.
The explanation of this:
The manner in which an I must be permeated with the feeling of love of Israel and unity of Israel as required is,
that it cannot be that he should "care about", G-d forbid,
the fact that it rains in the field in order to have bread,
when a doubt occurs to him,
perhaps through this a "lowest of Israel" will be distressed17!
Consequently it is understood how this is not "his needs",
for he is the one who determines what is "his needs",
consequently when he does not feel that this is "his needs",
then there is no positive commandment to request his needs!
- Causing pain to the body he indeed may not,
but here it is not about physical bodily pain,
for the falling of rain now affects the bread etc. that will grow several months after this;
ווארום די ירידת הגשמים יעצט איז נוגע צו דעם לחם וכו' וואס וועט וואקסן כמה חדשים לאחרי זה;
consequently only the person's feeling is relevant here,
whether he feels pain from it now;
צי ער פילט א צער איצטער דערפון;
regarding this he is a master,
so that the thought, desire, and feeling that he wants it to rain are nullified for him.
And on the contrary - since he knows that it could be that through this rain perhaps a Jew
("lowest of Israel")
will be distressed - he even has pleasure from the fact that it does not rain!
And as the law is regarding the delight of Shabbos18,
that although there may not be the matter of fasting on Shabbos,
if he has pleasure from fasting,
that is his "delight of Shabbos"19!
Furthermore:
In the Halacha one sees not only that the feeling of love of Israel and unity of Israel is found in a Jew in such a manner,
rather Halacha says that every Jew feels this way,
therefore according to Halacha the request for rain is specifically from the 7th of Cheshvan onward!
At first glance:
When one comes to a Jew and tells him to restrain himself for several weeks and not think about the fact that he needs rain,
and especially when he goes out and sees that the non-Jew next to him has plowed and sown in his field and vineyard and watered with his hands because there is no rain,
consequently he feels that rain is needed
(because if not, the non-Jew would not have troubled himself)
—where is the certainty that the Jew will indeed feel that he does not need it,
to the point that because of this we remove from him the fulfillment of the positive commandment of requesting needs?
Here we see the wondrous novelty in the halachic ruling20,
that "all Jews are presumed to be fit"
and "Your people are all righteous"21,
so it is certain that every Jew feels thus!
There are Jews who perhaps do not know about this,
therefore it is stated in the Shulchan Aruch,
and even one who does not look into the Shulchan Aruch
learns from one who looks into the Shulchan Aruch;
דערוויסט זיך פון דעם וואס קוקט אריין אין שו"ע;
but this is certain,
that the nature and custom of the Land of Israel is that it needs rain immediately after the festival,
however, since there may be a "lowliest of Israel" for whom the rain would be inconvenient,
whether this is a doubt or a doubt of a doubt—it is a certain thing that when "Your people are all righteous" learn of this,
the desire for rain in a field and vineyard near Jerusalem becomes nullified for them!
To the point that this influences also his prayer and request for his needs—which is a positive commandment from the Torah,
to request "his needs that he requires,"
not to ask for them after the time but to ask when he needs them—so that on the sixth of Cheshvan he says only "and give blessing upon the face of the earth,"
and only on the seventh of Cheshvan does he begin to say "and give dew and rain for a blessing upon the face of the earth"!
From all this we have the instruction regarding the present time:
Since the Torah has ruled that every Jew has the ability to stand at this level—he has the strength, permission, and ability to decide and be permeated with the feeling of love of Israel,
so that this becomes his very "needs"—it is certain that I need only add my little finger,
so that the matter of the unity of Israel will come down to him in a revealed way.
To the point that this will influence also the primary matters of a person's livelihood—like the matter of field and vineyard,
"a man plows etc. and sows"22,
until the coming of Mashiach,
and even then this will be a primary matter,
only it will be done by "strangers,"
"and strangers shall stand and pasture your flocks, and foreigners shall be your plowmen"23,
"their work is done by others"22.
Furthermore:
It is ruled as halacha in monetary laws,
the laws of documents24,
that when one writes in a document
(which follows the language of people25)
"after the festival,"
it means "fifteen days after the festival,"
after the seventh of Cheshvan. Based on the same reason that the "lowliest of Israel" returns home only on the seventh of Cheshvan.
Here we see how the matter of "the unity of Israel" permeates a Jew not only in his prayer—but even when it comes to "your deeds"26 and "your ways"27,
monetary laws,
a gift or a loan of kindness etc.,
by the language of people one reckons so much with the "lowliest of Israel,"
to the point that the meaning of "after the festival" in the language of people means "fifteen days after the festival."
From this we have the instruction that pertains specifically to the seventh of Cheshvan
(as above):
The month of Tishrei is a month that is "abundant in festivals"28,
when Jews gather together many times,
to the point of many times in the synagogue,
and also in the study hall
(where Torah classes are learned).
Afterwards comes the time after the last festival of the month of Tishrei,
after Simchat Torah.
Later comes the end of the month of Tishrei and the month of Cheshvan begins—when it is noticeable in the prayer that we are already after the festivals of the month of Tishrei,
because we begin to say Tachanun.
Afterwards comes the day of the seventh of Cheshvan—when we are already completely after the pilgrimage,
when the lowliest of Israel has already come to his home.
To the point that this is relevant to halacha also in monetary laws,
as above.
One could think
that now begins the time of "separation",
the conclusion of the unity of Israel in the month of Tishrei and the days after it.
Therefore the instruction is — that one must remember how the last festival of the month of Tishrei 5746 was drawn down,
Simchat Torah,
until the 7th of Cheshvan,
by virtue of the unity of Israel.
Consequently, this gives the power to continue the matter of the unity of Israel,
which is the perfection of love of Israel,
in actual deed,
the deed is the main thing29,
for the entire year.
From all this it follows — that when it comes to the "unity of Israel" in the month of Tishrei,
it is certain that every Jew remembers it throughout the entire year,
and this influences him.
For in truth, it is impossible to say that a Jew does not remember the last festival of the month of Tishrei,
the entire matter of memory and lack of memory applies only to something that one does not have on his table — but when it comes to Simchat Torah,
a Jew has "on his table" remnants of Simchat Torah!
That is, either physical remnants of Simchat Torah;
ד.ה. אדער שיריים גשמיים פון שמח"ת;
or spiritual remnants — that he remembers how he danced on Simchat Torah or was called up to the Torah on Simchat Torah,
and this is in a manner of longing,
that he yearns for the situation and state in which he stood on Simchat Torah,
at the aliyah to the Torah and the joy of the Torah.
Consequently, it is understood that this is not merely "we are remembered and we act"30,
but this is an action out of delight and longing and desire.
And the memory is drawn also after "after the festival",
from the 7th of Cheshvan onward,
in a manner that the memory, delight, and action of a Jew are permeated with the last festival,
Simchat Torah.
And it is known the Torah-instruction of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation31,
that the festivals in the month of Tishrei are universal festivals that influence matters upon the entire year,
and Simchat Torah influences joy upon the entire year32.
And this is particularly emphasized in the matter of the 7th of Cheshvan. For this emphasizes that the engagement in the matters of the festival is drawn until the 7th of Cheshvan.
And furthermore — from the language of halachah in monetary laws,
that "after the festival" means "fifteen days after the festival",
that is, that "after the festival" begins from the 7th of Cheshvan onward — it follows,
that one connects all these days from the 7th of Cheshvan and onward with the "festival", calling them "after the festival".
And from all the above, we have the practical instruction — to continue the awakening in the unity of Israel and the joy of Simchat Torah etc. for the entire year.
And this goes together with "Hashem will rejoice in His works"33,
as discussed at length in the farbrengen before this in the explanation of the interpretation in Likkutei Torah34 in the phrase35 "time of our joy"
(which is said on Simchat Torah),
that "our joy" in the plural means "Israel will rejoice in its Maker"36 together with "Hashem will rejoice in His works".
And this joy increases the action of every Jew and his connection with Simchat Torah,
and the joy is "in all your deeds" and "in all your ways",
for "all your deeds shall be for the sake of Heaven"26,
and "in all your ways know Him"27,
he has "know the God of your father"37,
until "the truth of His existence"38.
And all this becomes revealed in a Jew,
and in a manner of increasing and going in light.
And one influences this upon the entire surrounding,
beginning with those close to him,
"with our young and with our old etc. with our sons and with our daughters"39,
and through them — to every Jew and all Jews in all corners of the earth.
Until all this hastens the "great congregation shall return here"40,
for they all become connected with a matter of Torah and mitzvot,
and in a manner of joy,
which breaks through all barriers41 and partitions and divisions that are between Jews.
And it becomes actual,
the deed is the main thing29,
the true redemption,
that the cause for that which "we were exiled from our land"42 is nullified,
then automatically and in an instant the effect is also nullified,
the exile,
And we stand "behold",
in the Land of Israel,
"a land which etc. the eyes of Hashem your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"43,
including "Hashem your God will enlarge your border"44,
And there itself — in Jerusalem,
"the city of the great King"45,
"the city that was joined together"<sup>46</sup>;
"עיר שחוברה לה יחדיו" 46;
And there itself — on the holy mountain,
and in the Holy Temple,
"the Sanctuary, Hashem, Your hands established"47,
Already spoken several times,
also regarding the 7th of Cheshvan
(and already printed as well),
that among Jews every weekday is connected with the preceding Shabbat and with the following Shabbat,
with the prayers of those Shabbats.
The connection of the weekdays with the preceding Shabbat is also understood from the zemirot of Motzaei Shabbat,
whose content is the request for material needs of the coming weekdays,
"Six days shall you work and do all your labor"48,
the labor of "Six years you shall sow your field and six years you shall prune your vineyard"49 — that the days of work, action, and weekday should be blessed and successful etc.
And these zemirot are connected with this because it is Motzaei Shabbat,
Motzaei Yom Menuchah uKedushah. Hence the connection of Shabbat with the days after it is understood from this.
[And even those who do not recite the zemirot verbally50,
they certainly have in thought the content of the matter,
which is a true content,
since the zemirot accepted among Israel were composed by the great ones of Israel and are recited in many communities every Motzaei Shabbat.
Thus indeed "each river follows its own course"51,
there are those who recite all the zemirot,
those who recite a part of them,
or only "Vayiten Lecha"52 and the like — but the content is true according to all opinions,
because "these and those are the words of the living G-d"53].
Similarly, regarding the following Shabbat,
the weekdays are connected with it,
according to the well-known statement of our Sages, may their memory be for a blessing54, that the eating on Shabbat
(which is a positive commandment from the Torah or from the words of the Prophets,
Oneg Shabbat55)
comes through "exertion on Erev Shabbat".
And although in several places "Erev Shabbat" refers specifically to the sixth day alone,
nevertheless the content of the matter applies to all the weekdays,
as is seen simply,
that the eating on Shabbat is not only from the exertion of the sixth day,
but on the contrary,
it is more "praiseworthy" if one begins preparing from the preceding days,
from "Maalei Shabta",
the fourth day,
and even earlier,
until from the first day of the week.
For Shammai held this way also in law56,
that from the first day onward he would select the finest portion for Shabbat;
אז מיום הראשון ואילך האט ער בורר געווען די מנה יפה לשבת;
but even Hillel who said "Blessed is Hashem day by day"57,
it is certain that this does not mean he did not think and prepare for Shabbat from the first day of the week,
seeing each day that when Shabbat would come, "all your work should be done"58,
and one should be able to have the Oneg Shabbat in material matters as required.
From all this the connection of each of the weekdays with the following Shabbat is understood.
Just as each day of the week has a connection with the Shabbats before and after it,
it is certain that it is also connected with the portions of the Torah that are studied at that time.
For the matter of the weekly portion is a custom of Israel accepted in all the dispersions of Israel,
as the Rambam59 brings that there were two customs in this matter,
whether to complete the Torah once a year or once every three years
(or three and a half years — according to the versions on this60),
and the custom that spread is,
that one should complete the Torah every year61,
hence there is a weekly portion on every Shabbat.
And regarding our matter — the 7th of Cheshvan — it is understood,
that this day is connected with the portions that are read in the Torah on the Shabbats before and after it,
Parshat Noach and Parshat Lech Lecha.
And particularly according to the known principle that every matter in the world is with Divine Providence,
and all the more so every matter in the Torah — it is certainly with Divine Providence that the 7th of Cheshvan falls between Parshat Noach and Parshat Lech Lecha.
And especially — according to the well-known saying of the Alter Rebbe62 that "one must live with the time",
with the weekly portion and the portion of the day that is read in public and studied at this time.
From all this it is understood,
that on this day there is Torah and instruction from both portions,
both Parshat Noach and Parshat Lech Lecha,
at least by way of hint.
And in this there is a special emphasis from the fact that the 7th of Cheshvan in every single year must be between Parshat Noach and Parshat Lech Lecha.
In this very matter, however, there is a special point on the 7th of Cheshvan in this year,
that it falls on the third day of the week,
hence it has a connection to the third day of Parshat Lech Lecha.
And from this it is understood,
that the portion in Parshas Lech Lecha which is connected with the third day
(the 7th of Cheshvan),
is the portion from the third aliyah until the fourth aliyah which is studied on this day,
from which we extract the instruction in the service of man that is particularly connected with the determination of this year,
and from this we later derive also for all the years.
And as has been discussed at length several times,
that in Torah and in Halachah we find in several places,
that a halachah stands at a specific time and in a specific place,
and from this we derive for every place and every time.
And as this is simply in the verses of the Torah,
"And Hashem spoke to Moshe",
or "And Moshe spoke to the children of Israel",
that the speech was in a certain place and at a certain time and in a certain year
(as the Torah says)
— and afterwards this became a halachah for all the years and times and places,
as for example — regarding Pesach Sheni etc.,
because the reason of the matter applies in all times etc.
In addition to this, there is another matter unique to this day — in the very fact that it is the third day of the week:
Firstly,
we see in this the special connection of the 7th of Cheshvan with Simchas Torah
(as mentioned above section 11 and onward),
because we see in each and every year that the determination of the 7th of Cheshvan in the days of the week is on the same day that Simchas Torah falls,
and in this year — on the third day of the week.
And this very matter is in every single year,
since the number of days between Simchas Torah and the 7th of Cheshvan is the same every year,
"fifteen days",
because we are in a time when we sanctify the months according to the calculation63 Tishrei is always full64 — and the fifteenth day is always the same day of the week.
In addition to this,
we have in this a distinct instruction,
from the third day of the week:
As has been discussed several times,
the unique matter of the third day of the week consists in that "it was doubled with 'ki tov'"65,
i.e., regarding it the expression "ki tov"66 appears twice in the Written Torah,
and the Oral Torah interprets this matter of "it was doubled with 'ki tov'",
that this means "good for heaven and good for the creations"67.
And these two matters "good for heaven" and "good for the creations",
also include two modes in the fulfillment of the commandments:
There is a situation and state of a Jew when he finds himself in a manner that there is only he and the Supreme One alone,
he studies Torah and fulfills commandments,
"Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us",
because the Supreme One has commanded him — i.e., he does it as an individual,
as a matter between him and his Creator
("heaven").
A second mode in the commandments are the commandments that are specifically connected with "a multitude of people",
for example the matter of the reading of the Torah
(mentioned above)
for which one must have a minyan of adults,
because only then can one read from the Torah with the blessing before
("and gave us His Torah")
and the blessing after,
for then the reading of the Torah is complete,
and also the instruction of the Torah is then complete.
That is, in order to fulfill the matter of the reading of the Torah completely, one must specifically have ten from Israel,
provided each of them is a Jew, a son of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov
(regardless of his level),
it is a valid and complete minyan and all the matters,
and this becomes a matter of the study of Torah in completeness,
as is known that in the Written Torah one fulfills the study of Torah even if "he does not know what he is saying"68.
And in more detail:
There is the matter of the fulfillment of the commandments as each commandment is by itself,
i.e., it is dependent on the person performing the commandment himself,
such as the laying of tefillin
(regarding which "the entire Torah is equated to tefillin"69),
that the halachah is that one cannot do it even through an agent,
because it is a commandment pertaining to one's body70.
That is, although regarding the entire Torah "a person's agent is like himself"71,
there are, however, commandments pertaining to one's body
(like tefillin)
regarding which "a person's agent is like himself"70 does not help.
On the other hand, there are commandments that are specifically connected with another person — such as the commandment of charity,
which is equivalent to all the commandments together72 — that in order to fulfill the commandment of charity one must have an "other",
a giver and householder,
and a recipient and poor person73,
for only through the combination of both does the fulfillment of the commandment come about.
And the matter of the reading of the Torah mentioned above,
that this is specifically when there is a minyan of Jews,
specifically a congregation,
until the distinction between them is nullified,
because in the reading of the Torah the distinction between "your heads, your tribes" and "your woodcutters" and "your water drawers"74 is nullified — all are needed to complete the minyan,
and also the "woodcutter" and the one who "does not know what they are saying" recites the blessing over the Torah at the reading of the Torah.
This is also connected to the month of Tishrei — as mentioned earlier
(approximately
(ס"ב.
section 11 and onward)
in the month of Tishrei the separation and division of one Jew from another is not so apparent,
since it is a month abundant in festivals and pilgrimage festivals,
whose nature is that Jews gather together then in the synagogue and study hall,
the distinction between them is nullified and their unity is emphasized.
And in this there is the general lesson of the third day, "in which 'good' was doubled,"
"good for heaven and good for creatures" — that there must be the connection of these two matters together.
And as we see it in the aforementioned example of the reading of the Torah,
that the commandment of Torah study,
good for heaven,
is fulfilled at the reading of the Torah in public,
good for creatures.
And so too in the month of Tishrei,
the festivals therein and the commandments therein which are connected to "good for heaven,"
are in a manner of unity and "good for creatures."
This is the practical lesson — that the service must be in a manner that the good for heaven is permeated with good for creatures and vice versa.
In addition to the general lesson of the third day of the week — there is also,
as mentioned,
the particular lesson of today's Torah portion,
of the third of Parshat Lech Lecha.
And this lesson applies even to a Jew who is in exile,
not only in exile in the Land of Israel,
but in exile in "the land of the nations,"75
outside the Land,
and in a time of night and darkness — and this is a lesson that is relevant to practical action.
In order to extract the lesson from this portion in the Written Torah — there is the explanation in the Oral Torah,
as the Rambam brings in the introduction to his book that "all the commandments that were given to Moshe at Sinai were given with their explanation,"
one must look at the explanation in the Oral Torah on today's section of the Written Torah.
The beginning of today's portion is76 — "And also to Lot, who went with Avram, there were flocks, cattle, and tents."
That is, just as "Avram was very heavy with livestock"77,
so too
("and also")
was there by Lot a matter of wealth and abundance of flocks and cattle.
On this the Gemara in Bava Kama77 says:
"From where is this matter that people say, 'After the master of property, drag lumber'...
as it is written, 'And also to Lot, who went with Avram, there were flocks, cattle, and tents.'"
The content of the matter is,
that when one attaches oneself to a "master of property,"
a wealthy person,
"drag lumber,"
that the "fatness" is drawn to the one who attaches himself to the wealthy person — as by Lot,
that through his being "going with Avram,"
who was a great wealthy person
(as is related before and after at great length),
he also had "flocks and cattle" etc.
And from the aforementioned Gemara it is understood,
that the matter that was by Avraham Avinu became a lesson for the entire world,
"people say";
"אמרי אינשי";
for although "He gave us His Torah,"
with the entire explanation and the essence of the matter and its inner dimension — nevertheless, this is also a source for the "people say" of the seventy nations.
From this there is a lesson regarding practical matters in the service of man:
A person might think to himself — what does it matter who the neighbor is!
The Rambam78 indeed rules,
that a Jew must live in a neighborhood where keepers of Torah and commandments live etc.,
and "do not bring me ... nor to a test"79 etc. — but he is aware of his own strengths,
or he has even heard from a "court" that he can withstand all the temptations and incitements that his neighbors might cause...
then what difference does it make with whom he will be and go?!
And especially in a case where he does not settle with him "forever and ever,"
but rather it is only "the one who goes,"
he goes with him only on the way...
On this the verse says,
that "people say",
one should know,
that the "neighbor" with whom one associates influences him,
meaning that in this neighbor are dependent his assets and his property and his conduct,
even — his entire existence!
And as is told in the continuation of the parshah — what happened with Lot through the fact that he became a neighbor to the people of Sodom80.
One should know,
that wherever a self may find itself,
and wherever a non-self may find itself,
all the more so a guardian of Torah and mitzvos — he should know how much it matters where he settles and who his neighbor is,
and not only a neighbor for a long time,
but also a "neighbor" for a short time,
with whom he travels on the road.
And since the Torah says it,
it is certain that every Jew has the power to fulfill it,
because "I do not ask except according to their power"81,
and he cannot claim that he has no choice and must go specifically with this one and that one and so forth — because since the Torah says so,
even that "people say" so,
it is certain that he can fulfill it.
From this there is also a directive specifically regarding this time
(after the month of Tishrei),
in connection with the education of sons and daughters:
Just as now begins the time of the start of the school year — so now is the appropriate time to arouse regarding the manner and place of education of the children of Israel.
[For although officially the start of the school year was after the middle of the month of Elul or at the end of the month of Elul — however the month of Tishrei is a month abundant with festivals,
then it cannot be the regular daily going to schools,
and this begins in the month of Cheshvan,
a month that is ordinary].
There are,
due to our many sins,
such parents who think — that since in their home they observe kashrus,
even in absolute purity,
and in a manner of beautifying the mitzvah,
in the most beautiful way — why should one send the child to a place where one must pay tuition and so forth,
and the child will have to travel until he arrives at the school,
when one can send him to schools that the government has established,
public schools,
which are in every neighborhood,
consequently it is nearby;
במילא איז עס בסמיכות מקום;
and the government pays for it...
And what the Jewish child will be so many hours a day with such a child who conducts himself improperly and will be,
his "neighbor" — the parents think to themselves,
that it is enough that one tells him beforehand,
that he should not eat a non-kosher item,
and should make a blessing on every thing,
with all kinds of precautions,
and regarding this, that at the end of the day one asks about what he did and what he heard and how he behaved,
and one corrects all matters that require correction;
און מ'פארריכט אלע דברים הצריכים תיקון;
Consequently it is not so relevant who will be his "neighbor" during the day,
and with whom he "goes",
whether he "goes with Avram",
in the same school that "Avram" goes to,
or he "goes" with "people",
in the school where "people" go.
On this there is the directive from today's lesson that when it is "he who goes with Avram" it becomes a matter of wealth etc.,
and from the positive you understand the negative,
that if he goes to schools where there are those who are the opposite of Avram,
like the people of Sodom and so forth,
or those who are not like Avram — then he must prepare for an undesirable outcome.
And what the parents say that they can prevent it — this is untenable, as is clearly seen from the "people say".
And even if it is a doubt — regarding oneself one might want to enter into a doubt,
but regarding children,
one sees by nature parents,
that when it comes to children they want the best!
And especially since here in the verse it is stated even regarding Lot,
about whom Rashi writes82 that Lot was the opposite of the righteous one
(although Rashi in general is careful with his language83,
and "the words of the wise are heard gently"84),
and therefore Avram wanted to go on a separate path from him — and nevertheless what influenced him was that he was "going with Avram"!
And the lesson applies both to boys and to girls:
Contrary to the opinion of the world that specifically male children need to be nurtured in yeshivas,
whereas regarding Jewish daughters this is not so relevant, etc.,
because they are exempt from Torah study85,
and exempt from positive time-bound commandments86,
with all the leniencies that have been found for this,
or that it appears that they have found —
For also regarding Jewish daughters the “goes with Avram” applies,
as above.
Another lesson is derived from the conclusion of today’s Chumash portion:
The conclusion of today’s Chumash portion is87 “And Avram moved his tent, and came and dwelt in the plains of Mamre which are in Chevron,
and there he built an altar to Hashem.”
It states in the Midrash88 “Rabbi Abahu said: He built three altars:
one for the tidings of the Land of Israel,
and one for its acquisition,
and one so that his sons would not fall in the Ai
(in the Ai),”
and Rashi89 explains the order,
that the first was for the tidings of the land,
at the beginning of Parshat Lech Lecha90,
the second was “so that his sons would not fall in the Ai”
(this means at the time of the conquest of the land by Yehoshua when there was a war in the Ai91),
which is the altar that Avram made near “Beit El on the west side of the Ai”92,
and the third altar,
which is discussed here,
in Chevron,
was for the acquisition of the Land of Israel,
for it is written adjacent to “Arise, walk through the land, for to you will I give it”93.
But why was the third altar specifically in Chevron — it states in another place in the Midrash94 “and one in Chevron,
the place where they crowned David and where they made a covenant,
as it is said95 ‘And they came and made a covenant with David in Chevron before Hashem.’”
That is, the matter of Chevron is connected with the fact that all Jews,
all twelve tribes, crowned and made David king over themselves,
in a manner of an eternal covenant,
until King David Moshiach who is also from the seed of David96 and Shlomo97,
until the Rambam connects in his book98 the redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu with the redemption through David
(and it is explained at length also in the Gemara Sanhedrin99 in the sections that discuss these matters).
Until the covenant, David was a king only over the tribe of Yehuda100 etc.,
but coming to Chevron, all Jews made a covenant with him,
that his kingship is an eternal kingship101. A temporary king can also be from the other tribes,
and as it was in practice
(as the Rambam brings in Hilchot Melachim102)
— but the matter of eternal kingship is only with the seed of David101,
as it is written103 “Your throne shall be established forever” and “I have made a covenant with My chosen one, I have sworn to David My servant,
forever will I establish your seed and build your throne for all generations”*103.
And as stated above,
that for this reason the King Moshiach is from the seed of David and Shlomo,
because the kingship of Moshiach is an eternal kingship,
the world to come,
a redemption after which there is no exile104,
consequently it must be from the seed of David,
until the language in the Midrashim105 is that
(not only “Tzemach is his name”,
as the verse states106, but)
“David is his name”,
that David himself is the King Moshiach.
This is also the explanation of what is said in Kiddush Levanah107
(on Motzaei Shabbat of Parshat Lech Lecha)
“David, King of Israel, lives and endures” — seemingly:
One cannot say that “lives and endures” means in the World to Come,
because then “what is he telling us?”,
and what is the connection with Kiddush Levanah and King David — “all108 of Israel have a share in the World to Come”?
Rather, the simple meaning is indeed that he is alive and enduring now and as the king of Israel,
which includes all the people of Israel,
from “your heads, your tribes” to “your hewer of wood” and “your drawer of water”,
also the women of Israel and the infants of Israel,
including the smallest of the small boys and the smallest of the small girls;
ביז קטנים שבקטנים וקטנות שבקטנות;
And this means “David, King of Israel, lives and endures”,
because “they are destined to be renewed like it”109,
that all Jews,
of whom David is their “king” who “lives and endures” — will have the true and complete redemption through King David Moshiach!
And the lesson is also now,
before one actually comes to Kiddush Levanah:
The redemption is indeed,
for whatever reason,
not yet come on Monday,
the sixth of Cheshvan,
but nevertheless a siddur lies on the table,
and there one turns to the text of Kiddush Levanah,
one sees that when Kiddush Levanah comes on Motzaei Shabbat,
one will say "David Melech Yisrael Chai V'Kayam",
which means that not only is he "Chai V'Kayam" on Motzaei Shabbat,
but on the Monday before it and the Tuesday before it and all the days before it,
from the moment he became a "Melech Yisrael"!
The very fact that this is told in the Torah is a proof that there is a lesson in it110,
for the Torah is not a book of nice stories.
True indeed,
in the Torah there are nice stories spiritually,
and also nice physically,
the verse does not depart from its plain meaning111 — but that is not the essence of Torah,
and as it says in the Zohar112 that Heaven forbid to say that the Torah is a book of stories,
"like those wicked ones who say that the Torah is nothing but mere stories." Until the Rogatchover brings113,
that every story in the Torah is not a story but a law and halachah,
therefore one learns from the stories of the Torah several practical halachot,
to the point that it becomes a source for laws in the Rambam and in the Shulchan Aruch
(as detailed in the books of the Rogatchover).
From this comes the lesson and teaching — that since David HaMelech became "Melech Yisrael",
he is "Chai V'Kayam" until the end of all generations,
including the time when one looks in the siddur at the text of Kiddush Levanah
(even before the time of Kiddush Levanah actually arrives),
and in perfection this will be expressed in the future,
in the true and complete redemption through David Melech HaMashiach.
And based on all the above it is understood — that the third altar that Avraham built corresponds to the third Beit HaMikdash and the third altar of the future,
at the coming of David Melech HaMashiach.
From this is also understood the lesson from the conclusion of today's Chumash lesson — regarding "and he built there an altar to Hashem" as "the place where they crowned David":
Avraham was indeed the first Jew,
"Avraham was one"<sup>114</sup>;
"אחד הי' אברהם" 114;
and as we also see in the request for needs in prayer,
even on Shabbat and Yom Tov,
that the conclusion of the first blessing is "Magen Avraham"
(although earlier one mentions "Elohei Yitzchak v'Elohei Yaakov" and "Eloheinu"),
meaning Avraham is the main point and conclusion and seal.
Thus by Avraham his service of Hashem was revealed through the offering of sacrifices upon the altar
(and according to the simple explanation of the language of the Mishnah115 "on the Torah, on the service, and on acts of kindness",
that "service" means the service of sacrifices116,
"the Kohanim in their service" in the Beit HaMikdash and in the Mishkan (only afterwards,
in the time of exile it means the service of prayer,
which is also in place of sacrifices<sup>117</sup>));
וואס אויך במקום קרבנות 117));
and as the simple understanding of the matter,
that the offering of sacrifices must be upon the altar118,
as is the law
(brought in the Gemara Zevachim119)
that even non-Jews who are exempt from all the restrictions of a sacrifice must have a

און א)
altar,
a high place120.
And this is also the meaning of the word "Mizbeach" from the word zevach
(in addition to all the hints and acronyms in this name etc.).
The Torah tells us,
that Avram built several altars,
and with each altar he accomplished many matters,
but when it came to the third altar,
it was in Chevron.
Regarding the city of Chevron, everyone knows that there lie Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, and Sarah, Rivkah, and Leah,
the three Patriarchs and the three Matriarchs,
and also Adam and Chavah
(as brought in the Midrash of our Sages<sup>121</sup> — and explained elsewhere the addition in the matter);
(ווי געבראכט אין מדרחז"ל 121 - ונתבאר במקום אחר די הוספה שבדבר);
It is also known what is stated in the Zohar122,
that Chevron is from the word chibbur (connection),
and this is connected with the coronation of David122,
which is also connected with the fact that at the time of David's coronation there was the "connection" of all the tribes to crown him as king over all of Israel.
And the point of the matter is — that Chevron means the concept of the coronation of David as king over all of Israel in an eternal manner,
connected with the true and complete redemption of the future,
through David Melech HaMashiach.
From this one has the lesson for every Jew:
Every Jew must know,
that every mitzvah that he does must be permeated with the concept of "Chevron,"
with the future redemption.
And as the Ramban123 brings from the Midrash124 on the verse125 "Set up for yourself markers,"
that all the mitzvos of this time are only "signs and markers" for the mitzvos of the future,
which will be in ultimate perfection,
"according to the mitzvos of Your will."126
And as is understood simply:
since in the future to come the Beis HaMikdash will be in perfection,
because it will be built by the Holy One, blessed be He,127
("the Sanctuary of Hashem, Your hands established"47),
higher than both the building of Shlomo128
(which has special virtues within it)
and the Second Beis HaMikdash
(about which "the glory of this latter house shall be greater than that of the first"129)
— certainly the altar will also be in ultimate perfection,
in its original place,130
the same place where the altar was in the Second Beis HaMikdash and in the First Beis HaMikdash
(about which "everything in writing from the hand of Hashem upon me He gave insight"131),
And as the Rambam explains in his work,132
the book of laws, Laws133,
that "the place of the altar is very precise,"
and therefore "three prophets ascended with them from the exile,
one testified to them about the place of the altar,"134
and this is "the place where Avraham built the altar and bound Yitzchak upon it. And it is the place where Noach built... and it is the altar upon which Kayin and Hevel offered,
and upon it Adam HaRishon offered a sacrifice, and from there Adam was created... from the place of his atonement he was created"135 — yet in this very matter there will be a perfection in the future to come.
And from this it is understood regarding every mitzvah that a Jew does,
including the matter of "in all your ways know Him" and "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven,"
that all this is only "markers" toward the fulfillment of the mitzvos in perfection in the future to come,
when the mitzvos will be in ultimate perfection.
And this brings about a "longing,"
that at the time of fulfilling a mitzvah, a Jew longs for the time when the fulfillment of mitzvos will be "according to the mitzvos of Your will."
And this very thing,
the fulfillment of mitzvos in this time as "markers,"
hastens the third altar and the third Beis HaMikdash.
Therefore, when a Jew does a mitzvah,
including also "all your deeds for the sake of Heaven,"
he must at the time of the act long and strive for the ability to fulfill the mitzvos "according to the mitzvos of Your will."
And since he yearns and desires to be able to fulfill the mitzvah that comes after the mitzvah he is doing now,
already in the manner of "according to the mitzvos of Your will" — this becomes "his needs,"
consequently he has the mitzvah to request his true needs,
that the mitzvah should be "according to the mitzvos of Your will."
And we have the promise,
as the Rambam136 rules as halachah, that "
(always137)
every person should see himself throughout the entire year as if he is half meritorious... and likewise the entire world
(the whole138)
half meritorious...,
if he performs one mitzvah, behold he tips himself and the entire world to the scale of merit and brings salvation and deliverance to himself and to them."
And this is the lesson from the conclusion of today's lesson — that the first Jew made three altars
(and according to one version139 four altars),
but the conclusion
(in the daily Chumash lesson)
was the altar that he made in Chevron,
connected with the covenant that all Jews made that Dovid HaMelech should be king over Yisrael in the manner of "alive and enduring" forever.
And one effects that he should be not only "king of Yisrael,"
but also a king of the entire world,
which is the concept of Moshiach,
when "then140 I will turn to the peoples a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of Hashem, to serve Him141 with one accord"
(as the Rambam explains at length142),
and the kingship will be Hashem's.143
And the more one increases in our deeds and our service,
and especially through contemplation on all that was said,
the closer and faster one has the fulfillment of the prophecy "and behold, one like a son of man came with the clouds of heaven."144
One stands in the Holy Land,
and in Yerushalayim the holy city,
and on the holy mountain,
the Har HaBayis,
until "the Sanctuary of Hashem, Your hands established" at the third altar,
in the third Beis HaMikdash,
"the Sanctuary of Hashem, Your hands established."
In addition to the connection of today with a specific part of the weekly parshah
(as above),
there is also a general connection with the entirety of the sedrah.
And this is also relevant to today's lesson — as we see that also the verses of today's lesson
(from the third to the fourth aliyah)
are called by the name "Parshas Lech."
And from this it is understood,
that also from the generality of the parshah one must take a lesson in the service of man to his Maker,
not only the "avod avditi"145 of this day,
but also the "avod avditi" of this week.
And as an example, as it was in the Holy Temple,
that there were kohanim designated for the service of each and every day,146
all of whom belonged to the same "mishmar" that was appointed over the entire week,
and each day of the days of the week there were kohanim from a different "beit av" which belong to the same "mishmar".147
And accordingly it is understood regarding the parshah of the week,
that in addition to the unique aspect of each day in the parshah of the week, there is a unique service for the entire week connected with the parshah of the week.
The general service of today's parshah of the week is connected with the name of the parshah,
"its name by which it is called in the Holy Tongue",148
and that is Parshas Lech.
For in the matter of "Lech"
(from the term "halichah" [going])
the general concept is emphasized, that a Jew in his service must be a "mehalech" [one who goes].
And as is known149 what is stated in the verse150 "And I will give you goers among these standing ones",
that the angels are called "standing ones",
but Jews, through their service, are called "goers",
because "and Your people are all righteous",151
they are all going and ascending in their level in the study of Torah and fulfillment of the mitzvos,
in a manner of "they will go from strength to strength".152
And this is accomplished specifically through the descent of the soul below,
because even the soul, when it is above, is called "standing ones",
"as Hashem lives, before Whom I stood",153
"חי ה' אשר עמדתי לפניו" 153;
and specifically through the descent of the soul from a high roof to a deep pit,
there is a great elevation in the soul,
even higher than the place from which it "descended",
a matter of "halichah" [going],
"they will go from strength to strength".
And this also brings the continuation of the verse — "He will appear, Elokim, in Tzion",154
because through our deeds and our service the future redemption is brought down,
in a manner of "He will appear, Elokim, in Tzion",
a revelation of Elokus in a manner of sight, etc.
And the matter of "Lech Lecha" is also connected with the day of the 7th of MarCheshvan — as has been discussed several times at length.
Just as this is regarding the generality of the aforementioned lesson — so too is it in the explanations in the inner dimension of Torah,
Toras HaChassidus,
that there are explanations and maamarim on many and many verses of this parshah,
as printed in Ohr HaTorah, etc.,
and there are also explanations on the general concept of "Lech Lecha", etc.
Maamar (similar to a sichah)
beginning with the words "Lech Lecha".
It is also customary lately to pause on the daily Rambam study.
And this is according to the custom that has spread lately in many places and throughout the Jewish diaspora,
the study of the Rambam's lesson of three chapters per day,
in order to complete it within one year.155
And this is similar to the custom to complete the entire Written Torah each and every year
(and this is the simple custom — as the Rambam brings),
because the book Mishneh Torah of the Rambam is similar to the Written Torah scroll of Moshe Rabbeinu,
as the Rambam himself connects them in his introduction,
that "therefore I called the name of this compilation Mishneh Torah, because a person first reads the Written Torah
[the Torah of Moshe ben Amram,
Moshe Rabbeinu],
and afterwards reads this
(Mishneh Torah,
the Torah of Moshe ben Maimon],
and knows from it the entire Oral Torah" — accordingly it is understood,
that just as156 with the Torah of Moshe one completes it each and every year,
similarly one must endeavor regarding the study of the entire Torah,157
at least as it is brought down "halachos, halachos",
in a concise and clear language,
which is relevant to everyone "from small to great"158
(just as the Torah of Moshe which is "an inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov",159
for great and small),
therefore one completes the Rambam each and every year through the study of three chapters each day.
And since the custom has become even more widespread and accepted — this further emphasizes and strengthens the custom.
And particularly according to the ruling of the Rambam160 that any enactment and custom that has been accepted and spread throughout all the Jewish diaspora,
it receives the force of a positive commandment and a prohibition — so it is understood also regarding this custom,
that this is "the custom of Israel is Torah",161
and especially since this is a custom that is connected with the study of the Torah of Israel,
and in the Torah of Israel itself this is such a book that comes in continuation to the Torah of Moshe ben Amram,
and a book of "halachos, halachos".
And from all this it is understood – so there is certainly a lesson in today's lesson in Rambam,
which is in the laws of the Red Heifer,
chapters 2, 3, 4.
In the study of today's Rambam lesson itself, there are two parts:
First of all,
one has the actual study of the law in Rambam.
And in addition to this, and together with this, there are several matters of ethics and proper character traits and good character traits, etc.,
as the Rambam emphasizes at the conclusion and seal of the Laws of Me'ilah,
that "it is fitting for a person to contemplate the statutes of the holy Torah and to know their ultimate purpose according to his ability, etc." and at the end of the Laws of Temurah he writes:
"Although all the statutes of the Torah are decrees, etc., it is fitting to contemplate them,
and whatever reason you can give for them, give a reason,
for the early Sages said162 that King Solomon understood most of the reasons for all the statutes of the Torah," and the Rambam elaborates:
"And most of the laws of the Torah are only, etc., to correct the opinions and to straighten all deeds, etc." – which is a matter of "ethics,"
and also a matter of "piety,"
because the matter of a pious person is that his service should be beyond the letter of the law
(as discussed and explained in various places,
and also printed,163
and this is not the place to repeat it,
only to mention it in the manner of "give to the wise and he will become wiser"164).
But first one must learn the laws according to their simple meaning,
and afterwards one must derive from them the lesson and instruction in the service of Hashem,
for "Hashem commanded us to do all these statutes – to fear Hashem"165,
i.e., the intention of Torah and mitzvos is matters of fear of Hashem,
matters of character traits, etc.
And regarding our matter:
At the beginning of today's lesson,
the beginning of chapter 2 of the Laws of the Red Heifer,166
the Rambam writes:
"Additional stringencies were made regarding the purity of the Red Heifer, and great precautions were taken regarding impurity from the dead in all its procedures,
because it is valid with a tevul yom, lest they come to treat it lightly,
and because of this, when they separate the kohen who burns it, they separate him to a prepared chamber in the Temple courtyard..
Seven days before the burning of the heifer, they separate the kohen who burns it from his house,
just as they separate the Kohen Gadol for the service of Yom Kippur, etc."
And the reason for that which "it is valid with a tevul yom" is
(as the Rambam explains beforehand,167
in the lesson of the 6th of Cheshvan),
because "the Sadducees would say that the work of the heifer is only valid with those who have waited for sunset,
therefore the court in the Second Temple would render the kohen who burns the heifer impure with a creeping animal or the like, and he would immerse and afterwards engage in it,
in order to nullify the words of these wicked ones who teach from what arises in their minds, not from the received tradition."
So since "it is valid with a tevul yom – lest they come to treat it lightly,"
and therefore they made "additional stringencies" and "great precautions," etc.
Thus there arises a contradiction:
The entire reason why the heifer is valid with a tevul yom,
is "to nullify the words of these wicked ones who teach from what arises in their minds,"
to nullify the matter of innovating one's own things – and together with this, regarding the heifer they are stringent with several stringencies and additional requirements,
matters that are from the words of the Scribes that are not from the Torah,
but were added based on human enactment
(indeed the Sages,
but human beings),
and as the Rambam emphasizes so many times in the continuation of the lesson that these are additional stringencies that specifically the Sages innovated,
with the practical differences resulting from this, etc.
And nevertheless – the Sages innovated this,
so that they would not treat it lightly,
because "it is valid with a tevul yom" to refute the opinion of the Sadducees.
One must understand:
Why does the Rambam use the matter of "it is valid with a tevul yom,"
which is a "contradiction"
(as above)
as a reason for the concern of light treatment – when he could have brought a stronger and greater proof for the possibility of the matter of light treatment:
The matter of tevul yom, etc., is only a matter of beautification – but one finds a matter of "deficiency" in the Red Heifer that could cause more of a concern of light treatment:
There is a condition regarding all offerings that they must be offered specifically "inside,"
in Jerusalem and in the Holy Temple;168
אין ירושלים און אין ביהמ"ק 168;
however, regarding the Red Heifer, a primary condition is that all its procedures are specifically outside, outside the three camps,169
and this is a Torah law!
So here we are speaking about a concern of light treatment on the part of the ignorant,
who do not delve into the depths of the law,
so ostensibly the matter of "its procedures are outside" is more of a concern that leads to light treatment than the matter of it being valid with a tevul yom.
Everyone knows,
that all offerings,
whether for an unintentional sin or for an intentional sin
(where there are offerings for an intentional sin170)
must be offered specifically "inside,"
and if one offers them outside,
not only does it not count for him as an offering,
but it is even a matter of transgression — and here by the red heifer, "its actions are outside" specifically!
So why does the Rambam not bring this matter as a reason for concern of disrespect?
Also, one must understand:
The Rambam brings171 that the red heifer is from "consecrated property for the Temple treasury"
(not like other offerings which are "consecrated for the altar")
— this too is seemingly a reason for concern of disrespect;
- איז לכאורה אויך דאס א טעם של חשש זלזול;
why then does the Rambam not bring this reason?
And although these reasons are not brought in the Oral Torah,
and the Gemara brings only the reason of being fit for one who immersed that day — nevertheless, it is known the Rambam's method that he explicitly adds reasons of his own,
if this is merely a reason acceptable by intellect,
and he brings his own verses,
not verses that the Gemara brings — if this is a matter that is more acceptable to the intellect,
according to the simple meaning of the verses and the simple meaning of the law
(as it stands in the principles of the Rambam172,
without any disputant on the matter).
Seemingly, one could explain this,
that in truth this is not a matter that causes concern for disrespect by the red heifer,
because we find it in other matters and offerings in the Torah
(as the Tzemach Tzedek brings them all together in his Sefer HaMitzvos173),
both by the "scapegoat,"
whose entire service is "to Azazel in the wilderness"174,
where "its pushing is its slaughter"175,
and also by the "eglah arufah"176,
which is specifically outside the city,
even outside Jerusalem177,
because they do not judge the eglah arufah in Jerusalem since it was not divided among the tribes178,
it must be
(the decapitation of the heifer)
specifically by a stream that is outside the Temple and Jerusalem and outside the city.
According to this, one could say,
that therefore the matter of the red heifer that "its actions are outside" will not cause disrespect — because we find this matter also by the scapegoat and by the eglah arufah.
The truth, however, is that the opposite is logical — for the aforementioned reason, one must be concerned for a matter of disrespect also by the scapegoat and eglah arufah,
because their actions are outside!
For here we are speaking to an "am ha'aretz" and the like — when one will tell him,
that all other offerings are specifically before Hashem,
inside,
because they are consecrated for the altar,
but the red heifer and the others are specifically outside,
and a matter of consecrated property for the Temple treasury — it seemingly brings out a feeling that can lead to disrespect!
And the explanation of this is:
That which the red heifer's actions are outside,
does not indicate any matter of "inferiority"
(which could lead to disrespect),
because a red heifer is from the outset not an offering,
there is no presumption that it must be specifically inside.
And as the Rambam says171,
that "all that disqualify consecrated items for the altar disqualify the heifer,
and although it is like consecrated property for the Temple treasury, since Scripture called it a sin-offering";
ואע"פ שהיא כקדשי בדק הבית הואיל וקראה הכתוב חטאת";
i.e., in truth it is not a sin-offering,
rather it is only "Scripture called it a sin-offering."
Consequently, it is understood,
that that which "its actions are outside" does not cause a concern of disrespect,
because one does not compare the red heifer to other consecrated items for the altar whose actions are inside.
In other words:
The matter of "disrespect" that comes from that which "its actions are outside" need not be guarded against — because its holiness is indeed no more than consecrated property for the Temple treasury,
there does not apply to it any matter of the obligation of absence of disrespect regarding the matters related to this.
[So too by eglah arufah and scapegoat — that since according to the Torah their actions are outside, indeed there is no concern of disrespect in them,
for according to the Torah they do not have the category of an offering (whose actions are inside).
The heifer whose neck is broken had many restrictions
(that it has no blemish and has not yet borne a yoke),
and similarly the scapegoat had many restrictions — but since they are not sacrifices offered on the altar, whose service is performed inside,
we do not find regarding them concerns of desecration of sacred offerings,
and on the contrary,
the Mishnah179 relates concerning the "designated man"180 "and they made a ramp for him because of the Babylonians who would pull out his hair and say to him, 'Take and go out, take and go out'"
("and do not delay our iniquities with us any longer" — Rashi).
From this it is understood
that matters whose service is performed outside
have other restrictions.
Where one must guard against the concern of disrespect,
when it comes to the laws of impurity and purity of the red heifer,
which is indeed a part of the laws of the red heifer,
therefore they instituted additional stringencies,
so that one should not be disrespectful because it is valid with immersion that day. But because its service is outside, such disrespect will not arise in the simple sense of the matter,
since one will not initially compare it to sacrifices offered on the altar.
And one could elaborate on this,
but due to the time we only state the point of the explanation,
and give to the wise and he will become wiser,
and whoever has a better answer, "may blessing come upon him."
Another puzzling matter exists in today's lesson of the Rambam — at the end of chapter 3:
The Rambam writes there: "And nine red heifers were performed from the time they were commanded this commandment until the destruction of the Second Temple,
the first was made by Moses our teacher,
the second was made by Ezra,
and seven from Ezra until the destruction of the Temple,
and the tenth will be made by the King Moshiach, may he be revealed speedily, amen, may it be His will."
What is seemingly not understood is the relevance of this matter to a book of "laws of laws":
What is the practical difference of how many heifers were made,
and that the tenth heifer will be made by Moshiach?
Regarding the general matter, one could say
(with difficulty or at length),
that since the Rambam in his book also speaks about the laws that will be in the days of Moshiach,
he wants to bring here that Moshiach will make a red heifer,
and since he already brings this — he already adds the entire Midrash from its beginning,
about all ten heifers etc.,
to explain the sequence of events — but how does the phrase "may he be revealed speedily" fit here?
This too can be resolved with difficulty — because there is a law in the laws181 of kings and their wars and King Moshiach182 that one must be "awaiting his coming"
("I await him every day that he will come"183),
therefore the Rambam adds "may he be revealed speedily."
But it remains not understood why he adds "amen, may it be His will"? This is not a matter of halachah,
but rather a matter of prayer,
so how does it belong there?!
Granted, if the Rambam had brought it in the laws of Moshiach
(at the end of the laws of kings and their wars),
one could say with difficulty,
that there it is relevant to say that there must also be a prayer regarding this;
אז דארט איז נוגע צו זאגן אז עס דארף זיין אויך א תפלה בזה;
but what relevance does it have in the laws of the red heifer?!
Rather, from this there is a lesson regarding the manner in which one must be "awaiting his coming":
When one mentions Moshiach,
even in "laws of laws",
he must always add "may he be revealed speedily, amen, may it be His will"!
It has no special connection specifically to the red heifer,
rather it has a connection to "may he be revealed speedily",
that since one mentions Moshiach,
even incidentally in the laws of the red heifer
(as we find several laws that the Rambam brings incidentally even not in their place,
more than once)
— one must immediately add "amen, may it be His will"184!
Therefore the Rambam could not wait until he would come to the conclusion of his book where he speaks about the laws of Moshiach
(which took ten years,
as is known that the writing of the Rambam's book took "about ten years"185),
because "I believe etc. in the coming of Moshiach etc. I await him every day that he will come",
so he immediately adds "amen, may it be His will."
This is the practical lesson from this book of "laws of laws" — that when a Jew speaks about Moshiach,
that Moshiach will do something, he must immediately add "may he be revealed speedily",
and also a prayer and hope — "for Your salvation we hope all day"186 — "amen, may it be His will"!
Since we have already mentioned Moshiach, here is the place to mention another matter *186:
A wise man pointed out to me
(as the language in several books),
from the words of the Chida in his book Midbar Kedmos, letter Kuf, entry Kivui
(hope),
where he brings the explanation of the blessing "The sprout of David Your servant may You speedily cause to sprout, and his horn be raised through Your salvation, for Your salvation we hope all day,"
"for His saying 'for Your salvation' is not understood,
what reason is it?" and he explains that "And if you say that we have no merit, nevertheless cause to sprout, for Your salvation we hope,
and we have the hope,
and for the reward of the hope it is fitting that You redeem us."
Here we have a decisive proof against those who ask - from where do we know that one must pray for the coming of Moshiach every day,
and what will it help?
It was established in the text of the Amidah prayer
(which was established by the Men of the Great Assembly),
that "The sprout of David Your servant may You speedily cause to sprout etc. for Your salvation we hope all day,"
meaning that there must be three times every day the request for the coming of Moshiach.
And in this we have the explanation of the Chida,
that the hope and prayer itself causes the redemption to indeed come in a manner of "speedily cause to sprout"
(like the language of the Rambam "speedily he will be revealed").
For the Chida is accepted as a halachic authority,
and many halachos are brought in his name
(from his book "Chaim Shaal" and the like),
and his opinions are also brought in many places in the inner dimension of the Torah,
the secrets of the Torah.
And especially since the explanation of the Chida is printed in his book,
and it has spread everywhere.
Regarding this there is an explanation of the Radak where he also speaks about the matter of hope and demand for the coming of Moshiach - in startling words:
In his commentary at the end of the book of Shmuel II he writes 187 regarding the plague that was in the days of David,
that "all these thousands who fell in the days of David fell only because they did not demand the Holy Temple;
אז "כל האלפים האלה שנפלו בימי דוד לא נפלו אלא ע"י שלא תבעו בית המקדש;
and behold, it is a fortiori:
And if those in whose days it was not and it was not destroyed in their days fell for not demanding it,
we, in whose days it was and it was destroyed in our days,
all the more so;
על אחת כמה וכמה;
therefore the elders and prophets instituted to place in the mouth of Israel to pray three times every day 'Return Your Presence to Zion and the order of Your service to Jerusalem, Amen, may it be Your will, Selah.'"
From this we also have the instruction of how strong the demand must be for the building of the Holy Temple and the coming of Moshiach.
And regarding practical application:
Since both of these books are not so readily available,
and there are Jews who do not know of this Chida and of this Radak
(as I hear from the arguments that are made regarding this entire matter)
- it is worthwhile that this be printed in a newspaper.
Not in my name - because then it will become a matter,
that since so-and-so said thus, one must say the opposite,
"the reverse is logical",
as is known the debate in such matters 188,
which is not the place to elaborate on this.
Rather, it should be printed "in the name of the one who said it",
and especially since "whoever says something in the name of the one who said it brings redemption to the world" 189,
and to copy the language of the Radak at the end of Shmuel *189 and the language of the Chida,
who was indeed later
(than the Radak)
but was also a great one in Israel,
and accepted by all the Jewish people in all the diasporas,
and to explain,
that since these books are not so readily available,
therefore one copies the language.
Another matter regarding this - and with an introduction:
Just as I receive various letters,
I received a letter from a woman that she is very frightened,
because she received a letter in English
(and she writes to me also in English),
in which the writer of the letter writes to her that she should copy the letter in ten copies and send them to ten different people,
and in this merit she will have a reward;
און בזכות זה וועט זיי האבן א שכר;
and he adds - that "from the positive you understand etc.",
that if she does not send it to ten people - it is not possible to say what will happen to her,
and she should know that "it already happened",
it was thus and thus etc.
This letter is "full of nonsense";
דער בריוו איז "מלא שטויות";
but since she received the letter,
and she does not know from whom,
and from where that person got her "address" etc. - she wrote me a letter,
whether she should fulfill what is written there to be free of doubt.
Self-understood,
that I answered that it is written "Do not be dismayed by the signs of heaven"190,
even from "the signs of heaven" — moon and sun etc.,
and on the contrary "the nations are dismayed by them"190,
that this is a gentile custom to frighten oneself from such things,
therefore she should tear up the letter and forget about it and divert her mind from it.
Afterwards I began to think:
Why does one tell me such a thing?
Seemingly, this is a simple matter,
and especially since I do not know her nor she me — she heard the name, she asks what to do.
Until I caught myself,
that presumably there is in this a positive aspect.
Because every matter in the world one must seek how to utilize it for matters of holiness191.
If this is a forbidden thing — a Jew must negate it;
אויב דאס איז א דבר האסור - דארף דאס א איד שולל זיין;
but if this is a thing in which there is no prohibition — one must consider,
perhaps one can utilize it in "all your deeds shall be for the sake of Heaven".
And regarding our matter:
When it is about a good matter,
and there is a possibility,
or a doubt or a doubt of a doubt,
that perhaps Jews who do not know about this good matter will become aware of it — one can use the same method of writing letters in such a way that the recipient should send out ten copies of each letter!
And as is known regarding gold,
that "correspondingly" one used gold for idolatry192,
even though "the world was not worthy to use gold,
and why was it created,
but for the Beit HaMikdash"193,
because of which they used gold for idols for 26 generations until there was the Mishkan and the Temple of Solomon194,
so too regarding the matter of "chain letters"
(chain letters):
Heaven forbid to write threats upon Jews,
or even upon non-Jews — when writing to a Jew one must write only blessings!
And he will ask — from where will he take a blessing for a Jew whom he does not know and does not know — the Torah has already warned "and I will bless those who bless you"195:
When you want to have a blessing for yourself, you do not seek any "special reasons" for the matter;
בשעת דו ווילסט האָבן אַ ברכה פאר זיך זוכסטו דאָך ניט קיין "טעמים מיוחדים" לדבר;
just as you have needs — you want the Almighty to give you the matters;
אזוי ווי דו האסט צרכים - ווילסטו דער אויבערשטער זאל דיר געבן די ענינים;
if you have merited — it is good;
האסטו פארדינט - איז גוט;
if you have not merited — He should give it to you as a gift —
The Torah gives the advice for this — "and I will bless those who bless you",
bless a Jew and you will be blessed!
Even if it is about a Jew who does not know what he is and what he does etc. — but since he is a son of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov and a daughter of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel and Leah,
the promise of the Torah "and I will bless those who bless you" applies to him!
So, as is known about the words of the Chida and the words of the Radak mentioned above — regarding the absolute obligation to demand the coming of Moshiach etc.,
One should write to ten Jews,
to those regarding whom he has a doubt whether they know of it,
and in this letter one will copy what the two great ones of Israel wrote,
and conclude with a blessing,
"may blessing come upon them",
with all the blessings mentioned in the parshah, in the Written Torah and in the Oral Torah,
and ask that one should send the letter to ten people;
און בעטן אז מען זאל שיקן דעם בריוו צו צען מענטשן;
and one need not sign the letter.
If each one will do so with ten Jews — it will already reach a multitude of Jews.
One also has to do with those who call themselves "top Chabadniks",
so it is right that they should put aside all their matters, and one will sit immediately to write letters to tens and tens of Jews;
איז דאך רעכט אז זיי וועלן אפלייגן אלע זייערע זאכן. און מ'וועט זיך זעצן גלייך שרייבן בריוו צו צענדליקער און צענדליקער אידן;
therefore one warns that it is enough that one should send to 10 Jews,
and afterwards,
if one has free time,
one should sit to learn Torah.
What will be with the other ten Jews to whom he did not write — another Jew will write to them,
one of the ten to whom he wrote.
Because one will write it in pleasant ways and in ways of peace,
and wish all good things,
and not demand any things,
neither a report nor acceptance of authority,
and one does not even write a "return address",
but one only proposes to him,
that he can have the merit and send it out to another ten Jews.
And in particular, now one will write the matters in the manner of "saying a thing in the name of its speaker",
which itself "brings redemption to the world",
as this is stated in the Chida and Radak etc.
Seemingly, however, a question can be raised:
Why is this mentioned specifically now? Seemingly,
the books were already printed several years prior to this?
There are two reasons for the matter:
Firstly — because I myself also did not grasp this,
consequently I could not speak about it;
במילא האב איך ניט געקענט רעדן וועגן דעם;
and that which I have now grasped is because "a wise man enlightened me"
(as above).
But when "a wise man enlightened me" regarding the words of the Chida and the Radak — the insight occurred to me:
Why does he suddenly write me such a piece of knowledge and notification — it is a sign that I need to use it for something,
and use it for a good matter;
און נוצן אויף אן ענין טוב;
therefore,
when many Jews gather together,
I refrain from speaking with each one individually,
and I say this to everyone,
so that it should be publicized in letters as above.
Along with this, one must guard against undesirable matters,
as above,
that, heaven forbid, one should connect this with matters of intimidation, with things that are not in a respectful manner and the like;
אז ר"ל פארבינדן דאס מיט ענינים של איום מיט דברים שאינם בדרך כבוד וכיו"ב;
and on the contrary — "may blessing come upon them",
through doing an additional action to bring closer the coming of Mashiach.
In addition to this, there is a second reason — with an introduction:
Recently, such undesirable events have occurred that have no explanation in the natural way.
But the only explanation that I have found for now is:
One of the signs of the coming of Mashiach is indeed
(as it is stated in Daniel at its end196)
that then "they will be clarified, purified, and refined etc.",
i.e., that until then there is a "mixture",
consequently it could be that one has, in concealment, a matter of the utmost good or its opposite,
but this does not come down to revelation,
and one thinks that it will take time,
until Mashiach will come,
until one will know what is good and what is the opposite of good;
ביז מ'וועט וויסן וואס איז טוב און וואס איז היפך הטוב;
but he says in Daniel,
that one of the matters before the coming of Mashiach is the clarification and purification etc.
And as mentioned above — recently events have occurred that one would not have estimated that so-and-so son of so-and-so would have in himself such "good",
and one would not have estimated that so-and-so son of so-and-so would have in himself such a matter that is "the opposite". And this is not the place to elaborate on this.
So the only explanation for why it suddenly burst forth,
both in this direction and in that direction,
is in order to further emphasize signs that the coming of Mashiach is near.
There are enough signs that are already stated at the end of tractate Sotah197 and in tractate Sanhedrin198 that "soon, soon Mashiach will come".
But when the Almighty sees that one sits in exile and sleeps complacently — it is a sign that one needs to give yet another sign to awaken in Jews the taste and thirst for the redemption.
So there was the sign that a good thing was revealed that one had not estimated;
איז געווען דער סימן אז ס'איז נתגלה געווארן א דבר טוב וואס מ'האט ניט משער געווען;
they saw that this did not help — the opposite sign occurred.
And as mentioned — I had not estimated,
and another had not estimated,
that this one has such good and that one has such an opposite of good,
until it came out openly and publicly,
with all the matters,
which is not the place to elaborate on.
And this is the only explanation for this.
Since now such signs have been added regarding the coming of Mashiach,
this is even more arousing regarding the matters mentioned above
(regarding the words of the Radak and the Chida).
Everyone must do all that he can to stop the undesirable matters — and "his power is only in speech" and in writing — one should transmit orally and in writing the words of the Radak and the Chida mentioned above.
For the content of the matter is — that the Rambam writes at the end of his book that in the future "the Jews will be great sages etc. and will comprehend knowledge of their Creator according to the capacity of man,
as it is said<sup>199</sup> for the earth shall be full of knowledge of Hashem as the waters cover the sea";
שנאמר 199 כי מלאה הארץ דעה את ה' כמים לים מכסים";
consequently it is understood,
that the preparation for this must also be through the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
i.e., taking the wellsprings themselves200 and bringing them into the "outward" in a manner of spreading201,
and through the spreading of the wellsprings outward in its simple sense, one will have the coming of Mashiach in its simple sense202.
That this can be done in the manner of letters to ten people, each of whom will send to another ten,
this will create a "chain-reaction"
(chain reaction)
—and this will be done in a manner of increasing and adding light.
This is also the explanation,
as mentioned,
that to me came this wild thing about the letters etc.—in order to utilize this matter for matters of holiness etc.
And as mentioned above—one should do this not, heaven forbid, at the expense of Torah study and fulfillment of the commandments,
or at the expense of love of Israel and unity of Israel—but on the contrary,
this must go together with all these things.
And then one will surely have the fulfillment of the words of the Rambam in the present measure,
that "speedily He will be revealed",
and "Amen, may it be His will",
as the Rambam adds in his halacha,
and every Jew who learns this halacha says it "with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might"203,
that "Amen, may it be His will".
And according to what is explained in the books204 that whoever reads and reviews, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him,
i.e., that the Almighty learns the same matter that a person learns,
it is understood,
that at the time a Jew learns about the tenth heifer that Mashiach will prepare,
and then adds "speedily He will be revealed,
Amen, may it be His will"—then the Almighty says "opposite him"—"speedily He will be revealed,
Amen, may it be His will"!
One of the matters that are also connected with the coming of Mashiach our righteousness and the revelation of Mashiach our righteousness is charity,
as the Gemara says205 great is charity, for it brings the redemption closer.
And the Alter Rebbe explains the reason for this at length in his Igeres HaKodesh206,
and it is explained at length in books of mussar and books of Kabbalah and books of Chassidus,
even in books of halacha.
To the extent that the law is in the Shulchan Aruch207,
that there must be "give a coin to a poor person and then pray"208,
that before one says "the sprout of David Your servant, speedily cause to flourish",
with the reason "for we hope for Your salvation all day",
i.e., that the hope and prayer itself is a cause for the coming of Mashiach on this very day,
one adds to this very matter through charity, which brings the redemption closer.
And in continuation of this,
they will distribute the money with the intent to give it to charity,
as at every farbrengen.
And these are a fortiori matters:
If one conducts oneself thus at every farbrengen,
all the more so at a farbrengen whose conclusion is to continue and repeat again the matter of "I believe in the coming of Mashiach", which means the "king from the house of David"
(from the seed of David and Solomon)
who "delves into Torah and occupies himself with commandments etc. and compels all of Israel to walk in it and strengthen its breach"209,
as it is written in the book "Hilchos Hilchos",
and will also affect non-Jews,
"that I will turn to the peoples a clear language, to call all of them in the name of Hashem, to serve Him with one accord".
And especially since the matter of the redemption comes particularly through each Jew adding one good deed, one good word, or one good thought—because through this he tips himself and the entire world to the scale of merit and brings salvation and deliverance to himself and to them.
They will distribute,
after the after-blessing,
to each and every one a dollar
(through the "tankists" etc.)
so that they give it to charity,
and whoever is diligent,
and whoever adds more from his own,
is praiseworthy.
And all these matters should further hasten and bring closer the fulfillment of the prophecy of "I will hasten it"210,
and in this very matter—"and behold, with the clouds of heaven".
And as was said in the evening prayer that was prayed a little over an hour ago "the sprout of David Your servant, speedily cause to flourish",
which is both a language of request and a language of promise,
"and may our eyes behold Your return to Zion in mercy",
speedily, in our very days.
And in order to break through all boundaries and all limitations—they will also conclude,
before the after-blessing,
with that which each and every one of Israel within the entirety of Israel,
will say in song and melody the prayer that is the prayer of all Israel "May it be Your will etc. that the Holy Temple be rebuilt speedily in our days"211,
speedily, in our very days.
The Rebbe shlita instructed the shliach tzibbur shlit"a to sing "May it be Your will etc. that the Holy Temple be rebuilt speedily in our days and give us our portion in Your Torah".
Afterwards he instructed to sing from the beginning again.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make an after-blessing,
will surely make an after-blessing.
The Rebbe shlita distributed to the "tankists" shlita dollars,
in order to distribute them among the congregation,
to each one a dollar with the intent to give it
(or its equivalent)
to charity.
Before his departure he began to sing "Niet niet nikavo".
