It has already been spoken about several times1,
It has already been spoken about several times1,
that when Jews part from one another,
the Above says about this that "your separation is difficult for Me"2,
that the "separation" and division between Jews is "difficult" for Him. Since this is stated in the Torah regarding the Above,
it is understood from this also regarding Jews,
"the Holy One, blessed be He, looked into the Torah and created the world... so a person should engage in the Torah etc."3.
Furthermore:
the matter of "your separation is difficult for Me" regarding our subject,
is not only from the aspect of the matter of separation,
but also from the aspect of the time,
the conclusion of the month of Tishrei:
Regarding Rosh Hashanah it is explained4,
that then "you are standing today, all of you, before Hashem your G-d... your heads, your tribes... from the hewer of your wood to the drawer of your water"5,
meaning that then all Jews stand in a manner of unity,
and this is not merely a unity where there is initially no division
(like it is said regarding tefillin that they are "one skin"6),
rather this is a unity of ten types of Israel,
from "your heads" until "the drawer of your water"7,
meaning that although the unique aspect of each of the ten types is emphasized,
that each one of them is different from his fellow both in quality,
in virtues,
and in place,
that one is found in the corners of the world –
nevertheless,
on Rosh Hashanah,
they all gather together in a manner of unity,
because the matter of unity is an essential and most important matter,
to the extent that it gathers everyone and all the matters that are in each one,
both in quality,
both in spirituality,
both in physicality,
and from all extremes.
And the reason for the matter is –
because Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the year and the beginning of the general month of the entire year,
to the extent that the entire month is called by the name "Tishrei", the letters of "reishit" (beginning)8,
because it is the "head" of the entire year,
a general month.
And from this it is understood,
why the Above says "your separation is difficult for Me" at the conclusion of the festivals of the month of Tishrei,
for "moed" (festival) means a chosen day and time,
because at the conclusion of the festivals the same matter that is at the beginning of the festivals is emphasized,
Rosh Hashanah,
is standing on that day,
the conclusion of the festivals of the month of Tishrei,
before one parts from the "unity" of the festivals of the month of Tishrei,
then the matter of "your separation is difficult for Me" applies.
And particularly according to what is explained in Chassidus9 regarding the matter of "bakeseh l'yom chageinu" (for the concealed day of our festival)10,
that all these matters that stand on Rosh Hashanah
(when "blow the shofar at the new moon"10)
"bakeseh",
in concealment and hiddenness,
afterwards stand in revelation "l'yom chageinu",
on the festival of Sukkot,
and particularly at its conclusion, Shemini Atzeret.
And from this it is understood,
that also regarding the matter of the unity of Rosh Hashanah
("you are standing etc."),
which was a unity in full force,
not merely a movement of unity,
rather unity in actuality,
as one truly like one –
that its revelation comes to be standing at the conclusion of the festivals,
on Shemini Atzeret.
Furthermore:
The festival of Sukkot is divided into seven days,
corresponding to the seven days of creation,
which is the ultimate division of days*10,
as with the seven days of creation the first time,
that previously there was the coming into being of yesh me'ayin (something from nothing) in the first moment of creation,
and when the seven days passed,
one already had all the creations also in particularity and in the most minute details,
ad infinitum
(to whatever extent "infinite" exists in the order of hishtalshelut (evolution) and in the simple world) –
it is understood from this,
that the matter of unity which stands in revelation during the seven days of Sukkot,
is then particularized into the most minute details.
[And although the actual coming into being was only during the six days of creation –
nevertheless Chazal say<sup>11</sup> "what was the world lacking? Rest;
Shabbat came, rest came",
meaning that a perfection was added to all creations specifically on the seventh day,
Shabbat].
It is certainly,
that standing at the conclusion of the days of Sukkot,
after one already has the seven days of the unity of Israel in revelation –
it brings out above the matter of "your separation is difficult for Me".
And from all this it is understood also regarding our subject –
that standing today,
at the conclusion of the month of Tishrei,
when the matter of separation becomes actual –
the matter of "your separation is difficult for Me" is particularly emphasized.
And what is the lesson from that which the Torah says "your separation is difficult for Me"?
This will be understood with an introduction of a simple question, seemingly:
By the Supreme One, it is indeed "Who can say to Him, 'What do You do?'"12 and who can restrain His hand?
So what is the meaning of the statement of the Holy One, blessed be He, "Your separation is difficult for Me"? From whichever side you look:
If it is indeed difficult,
then why must there be this "your separation"?
And it can be explained in this matter,
that this is similar to the statement of our Rabbis, of blessed memory,13 regarding several matters
(that they are)
"Difficult...
like the splitting of the Red Sea." And the question on this is known14:
How is it possible to say a concept of "difficulty" regarding the Holy One, blessed be He?
Now, the concept in this is explained14,
that since the Supreme One established the order of the chain of descent
(for whatever reason)
in such a manner that it should be in an ordered arrangement,
and the world should be in a manner of "day and night they shall not cease"15,
and so too the entirety of the world should be in a manner of "He created it to be inhabited"16,
and that the Red Sea should go its course,
not split—
then when one must change the will of Hashem,
this is a concept of "difficulty".
And so too in the matter of "Your separation is difficult for Me":
The Supreme One desired initially that all Jews should be in one place,
and although "their opinions are not equal"17,
nevertheless, since their will and thought will be about one matter,
the one will of the Master of the world,
then "in the place where a person's will is, there he is found"18.
So when one must change this—
then this is a concept of "difficulty",
"Your separation is difficult for Me".
From this it is also understood why there must indeed be the matter of "your separation" even though it is "difficult",
because this is exactly like the splitting of the Red Sea:
Just as at the splitting of the Red Sea this was done contrary to the matter of "they shall not cease",
so that Jews could go and receive the Torah,
and as explained in Torah Ohr19 also in the inner aspect of the matter,
that before the giving of the Torah there had to be the introduction of the splitting of the Red Sea
(in addition to the introduction of the exile of Egypt and the exodus from Egypt)
[which is why20 we mention the splitting of the Red Sea every day,
as stated in the Tosefta21 etc.]—
So too regarding "your separation",
that although it is "difficult",
one must nevertheless do it,
so that Jews can bring Torah to every place and location,
which is why they travel apart from each other "from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth"22,
in order to reach "if your outcasts are at the ends of the heavens"23,
in a manner of "outcast",
to bring also to that place Torah and Judaism,
until this ultimately brings about "from there Hashem your G-d will gather you"23,
"and you will be gathered one by one, O children of Israel"24.
In order to safeguard the matter of "Your separation is difficult for Me",
it is stated25,
that the Supreme One says that therefore one should bring Him "one bull, one ram",
in a manner of "it will be yours alone, and no strangers with you"26,
meaning that before the actual "separation" one performs a matter of unity,
until "and no strangers with you",
and one draws down the unity into this "your separation",
ensuring that the "your separation" will ultimately bring about unity.
And just as this is in general at the beginning of the year,
on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
so too it is drawn down afterwards from time to time,
when Jews gather together,
that before one departs from a place where Jews were together,
one precedes this, in potential and in actuality, as a community, the matter of unity with strength,
so that this should be brought down by each one,
in every place and every time and every level where he comes.
And particularly when it concerns a gathering and assembly that is connected with the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
then one desires that what was taken while being together,
in a manner of "a great congregation"27,
should afterwards be drawn down in a manner of "the spreading of the wellsprings outward",
that each one should bring it to his place, station, situation, and country during the weekdays of the year,
which are all months relative to the month of Tishrei, which is abundant in festivals.
This very matter of "one bull, one ram" etc. that is done to safeguard the "Your separation is difficult for Me" is also connected with the fact that at the conclusion of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah there is the matter of "and Jacob went on his way",
as explained in many places28,
that the concept of the going "on his way" is the same concept as "your separation".
But in this matter of "And Yaakov went on his way" itself, there are several levels,
as explained in Bava Metzia 29,
that there is the concept of "And Yaakov went on his way" which occurs at the conclusion of Yom Kippur
(as explained in the discourse "Vekacha" 30),
and more particularly and more openly, the concept of "And Yaakov went on his way" occurs at the conclusion of Simchat Torah
(as above),
and more particularly and even more openly, it occurs at the conclusion of Shabbat Bereishit 31.
And from this it is understood 32,
that there is an additional stage in "And Yaakov went on his way" when one arrives at the end of the month of Tishrei and the beginning of the months that follow it,
starting from the month of Cheshvan.
Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan always has two days,
because Tishrei is always full,
it is understood,
that the night between the two days has the quality of both days,
both of Tishrei
(the 30th of Tishrei)
and of Cheshvan
(the 1st of Cheshvan),
since it is in the middle.
Therefore, this is the appropriate time for the farbrengen,
the unification,
which comes to remedy the separation,
"It is hard for me [to bear] your separation."
In this, the emphasis comes in the very fact that this is a time of night:
"Night" 33 is a time of concealment,
when all matters are not openly apparent in their clarified state,
and accordingly, regarding Jews, it is then not apparent how they are the "one nation in the land" 34,
as explained in Tanya 35 the concept regarding this,
that even while being "in the land," Jews are "one nation",
and furthermore,
that Jews draw down the "One",
the oneness of Hashem,
into the land,
into worldliness;
אין ארציות;
meaning, not only does "worldliness" not affect them,
but they affect worldliness.
Thus, when one stands in a time of night,
when all these matters are not openly apparent, clear, and luminous –
and nevertheless, one utilizes the night to remedy "your separation",
and to connect "Tishrei" with "Cheshvan",
one has the quality of "The night shines like the day" 36,
that specifically at night the concept of the unity of Jews is emphasized,
before they part from one another, etc.,
which has the quality of "The advantage of light from darkness" 37.
And this is also connected with the fact that this year is a leap year,
a "complete year" 38,
that one draws the unity of the month of Tishrei also onto the additional month,
the thirteenth month.
For although the concept of intercalation of years is seemingly connected with accusation, etc. 39 –
Torah, however, makes of this the concept of "the transformation of darkness into light" 40,
a "complete year",
which effects a "completeness" in all the months of the year,
and transforms the matter that causes accusation,
until it reaches the quality of "the advantage of light from darkness" and from foolishness and from accusation,
which is a very great "advantage of light",
until "so may they multiply and so may they spread out" 41,
that it breaks through all boundaries and limitations.
Based on all the above, one of the reasons for the farbrengen at the conclusion and seal of the month of Tishrei and the beginning of the month of Cheshvan is understood –
To emphasize again that the "separation" and the parting from one another is only in externality,
and on the contrary –
the very parting from one another is in order to increase in unity,
and as mentioned above,
that the concept of "as one" is not so much emphasized when one stands in a state of unity from the outset,
and accordingly when one stands in one place, one state of mind, one will openly, and one action;
ועד"ז בשעת מ'שטייט אין א מקום אחד ומצב רוח אחד ורצון אחד בגלוי ופעולה אחת;
rather, specifically when one parts from one another and nevertheless stands "as one".
For seemingly, the parting from one another is with truth,
in order to fulfill the concept of "spreading the wellsprings outward",
and accordingly every matter of Judaism,
Torah and its mitzvos –
is this not seemingly a true "separation"?
One says, however,
that in the true parting there is the "truth of truth",
a matter of unity,
for "truth" its concept is "unity",
as is known 42 that truth is the concept of "I am the first and I am the last and besides Me there is no God" 43,
the ultimate truth.
For in truth, the content of the parting from one another is –
in order to bring unity in every place,
therefore the concept of unity is emphasized openly specifically when in externality
(and also in internality)
one goes to a most distant place,
a most distant "outside",
and there one performs the spreading of the wellsprings.
And as has been discussed several times 44 the precise wording of the three words "May your wellsprings spread outward":
One must have the wellsprings themselves specifically,
and not only the river that issues from the wellspring.
The wellspring must be in a manner of "dissemination",
spread outward.
The wellspring must reach into the "outside",
i.e., it does not transform the "outside" so that it ceases to be a worldly existence,
for then there would be no concept of fulfillment of the commandments,
as is known45 that in the Garden of Eden there is no concept of the commandments,
and on the contrary –
also in the world itself,
at the time when the world will come to its perfection, it is said46 "the years have arrived of which you will say, I have no pleasure in them"47,
for then,
at the end of days,
there will be no evil inclination and no "choice",
there will be only one path;
עס וועט זיין בלויז א דרך אחת;
rather "outside" means that an existence of "outside" remains and there the "wellsprings" reach.
This brings out the concept of unity that is revealed through the service of disseminating the wellsprings outward –
when one spreads the wellsprings themselves into the outside of the world,
then there is the unity of Hashem throughout the entire world,
and this brings the coming of Mashiach our righteousness,
and before Him comes the Shechinah48,
which brings the concept of unity into revelation,
"If your dispersed shall be at the ends of heaven, from there Hashem your G-d will gather you",
"And you will be gathered one by one".
The matters mentioned are also connected with the precise wording of the three words "And Jacob went on his way"49:
"Jacob" — the letters yud-ekev50 alludes to this,
that a Jew is in a situation and state where his yud is "inserted" and "occupied" in the "ekev",
in actual deed,
a matter of "outside",
the heel of a person.
And there specifically is "on his way",
not necessarily the study of Torah and fulfillment of the commandments,
but the way of the person,
and the way of the heel.
But there the action of "went" is –
a progression beyond measure,
which is a matter that can be carried out specifically when one is a soul in a body51
(unlike in the Garden of Eden where he cannot carry it out).
Specifically there where there is a physical animal hide with physical parchment and physical ink with a physical quill etc. etc. –
he fulfills the commandment of tefillin,
regarding which "the entire Torah is equated to tefillin"52,
and so too the other campaigns,
which are general principles encompassing all the details of the Torah and its commandments,
including "in all your ways know Him"53 and "all your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven"54
(i.e., even such deeds that are only "for the sake of Heaven" and not on the level of "know Him").
One sees therefore –
that the purpose of the service is to draw down unity specifically into the world of separation,
and through this one attains true unity.
May it be His will,
that all these matters be revealed with joy and a good heart.
This is connected with the seal of the festivals of the month of Tishrei –
Simchat Torah,
the greatest joy,
And so too as it is said in the haftarah of Shemini Atzeret,
in connection with the building of the Holy Temple,
"and they went to their tents joyful and good of heart"55,
from which is understood regarding the entirety of the fulfillment of the Torah and its commandments.
And afterwards it is drawn down in greater revelation and with greater emphasis and in greater detail on this night,
the night between Tishrei and Cheshvan,
with joy and a good heart.
All of this is set forth in the Shulchan Aruch,
and in greater explanation in the "Chassidic Shulchan Aruch",
which are the maamarim and sichos of our Rabbis and leaders,
the sections that issue practical instructions,
until the manner of "taforu da plachu"56.
And in addition to this, it is said to every Jew,
all the more so to those who merited and were at the tziyun of the leader of our generation,
and study his maamarim in the manner of "and we will walk in His paths"57 –
that with them there must be the matter of "and you shall do that which is right and good"58,
"beyond the letter of the law"
(from which one learns59 the concept of "beyond the letter of the law").
And in addition to this, one also has the parshah that always comes after Shabbat Parshas Bereishis –
Parshas Noach,
where it is written "These are the generations of Noach, Noach"60,
he interprets in the Zohar61
(that "they will go out from exile with mercy"62)
that "Noach Noach" means "rest for the supernal ones and rest for the lower ones"63.
One has all these matters with joy and a good heart,
with rest of the soul and rest of the body that the Almighty gives,
consequently one has the ability without any confusions to fulfill all the matters with utmost perfection,
that it should be "rest for the supernal ones and rest for the lower ones".
And from this one comes to "And the offering of Yehudah and Jerusalem shall be pleasing to Hashem, as in the days of old and as in ancient years"64,
which is connected to "the days of Noach"65,
as explained at length in the discourses of the Tzemach Tzedek in Ohr HaTorah and in his explanations and notes on this66,
which will be speedily in our days, literally,
in the "days of old and ancient years" simply,
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,
And from amidst rest and joy and goodness of heart,
for "in stillness and in confidence shall be your strength"67.
Continuing from what was discussed above regarding two days of Rosh Chodesh,
there is in this yet another lesson,
and with an introduction:
Seemingly, the matter of two days of Rosh Chodesh
(similar to two days of Yom Tov)
is a thing that comes due to a lack in completeness,
that just as because of doubt one makes two days of Yom Tov68,
so too because of doubt one makes two days of Rosh Chodesh,
unlike when the matter of sanctification of the months is in its completeness based on sighting69,
and similar to how it was at the time when they would sanctify based on sighting,
that they would make two days of Rosh Chodesh when the witnesses delayed contrary to the usual manner and the like70,
which the very delay itself is an undesirable matter.
And so too in the inner content of the matter,
as explained in Likkutei Torah71
(regarding the matter of the second day of Yom Tov in the diaspora)
in explanation of the words of the Midrash72 "The Congregation of Israel said,
in the Land of Israel I would keep one day, now two days,
I thought I would receive reward for both, but I receive only for one day",
and he brings there in the name of the Ramak73 "that outside the Land they cannot receive the illumination in one day as they receive in the Land of Israel,
rather they need a second day",
therefore "I receive only for one day",
because "that illumination which shines in the diaspora in two days shines in the Land of Israel in one day",
so according to all this it emerges that "two days" is a matter of deficiency,
that it takes two days to receive the same matter that is drawn down in the Land of Israel in one day.
And from this it is understood similarly regarding Rosh Chodesh.
And this is also understood from the totality of the matter that the reason that Yom Tov and Rosh Chodesh are for two days is "because of doubt" –
for the matter of doubt itself is a descent unlike any other,
for completeness is the matter of certainty,
as it is said74 "His name is Certain, so is His praise",
and in all matters of Judaism every thing must be in a manner of "certain",
to the extent that "doubt" has the numerical value of "Amalek"75.
So according to all this it emerges,
that the matter of two days of Rosh Chodesh is a matter of deficiency?
So the explanation in this is –
that on the contrary,
the greatest descent is for the purpose of the greatest ascent.
And so it is regarding the matter of "doubt",
that the matter of doubt and descent is for the sake of the greatest ascent,
which is even higher than before the descent.
And as we see,
that the matter of doubt has a root on high, on high,
as explained in many places76 in that which is stated in Etz Chayim17 that there are several doubts in Atika Kadisha,
where "there is no left in this Atika"78,
and nevertheless matters of doubts are counted there –
from which it is forced that through the matter of doubt one can reach on high, on high.
And in truth it is absolutely forced to say so –
for if not,
then how does there come into the world an existence of "Amalek" which has the numerical value of doubt? –
One must say,
that through this one can reach a very great ascent,
which is even higher than "His name is Certain".
Therefore the service in this must begin with a doubt,
before the halachah is decided,
afterwards one comes to "the word of Hashem, this is the halachah"79,
afterwards one comes to the "certainty" that is above,
and there itself in "Atika Kadisha",
until a place that is a doubt in Atik itself!
And simply:
There are Jews who have in themselves virtues simply,
in which no doubts apply,
for specifically they are Torah scholars and performers of mitzvos,
to the extent that even the lowest type are "full of mitzvos like a pomegranate"80,
and all the more so most of the Jewish people,
who are kosher and are righteous,
to the extent that they effect that it should be "and Your people are all righteous"81.
There is, however, a higher level than this,
which is the place where there is a "doubt" as to whom to choose,
and Jews are chosen not by virtue of their merits and reward for Torah study and fulfillment of mitzvos,
but by virtue of the choice itself of the Essence and Being82.
From all this is understood the advantage that is reached through the "doubt" which brings two days of Rosh Chodesh,
the advantage that one has through the clarification of the doubt,
until one reaches the doubts of Atik,
until the very choice above.
And regarding this it is also understood concerning the words of the aforementioned midrash,
that in the matter of two days of Yom Tov there is a descent,
that one receives the reward of one day for two days –
and nevertheless the descent is also for the sake of ascent.
Every matter must be reflected in the lowest world –
so where do we see the aforementioned advantage in the two days of Rosh Chodesh
(which come because of the doubt of the day)?
And especially according to the words of the aforementioned midrash that "I only accept one day",
that for two days one receives only the reward of one day?
And one must explain this also to a simple person,
so that it should be understandable also in his simple life.
This is understood simply:
In practice a simple person sees,
that one does not have one day of Rosh Chodesh but two days of Rosh Chodesh,
which in practical terms means,
that there is an additional day when one does not say Tachanun,
because the reason for the matter is that the day itself atones,
one does not need to come to reciting Tachanun
(as discussed several times 83).
So that even the additional day is not from the "days of work",
but it is similar to Yom Tov 84.
So that even women,
who are not connected with "Talmud Torah" with all its storm 85
(specifically the revealed part of Torah,
as opposed to the inner part of Torah,
as discussed several times 86) –
the Yom Tov aspect of Rosh Chodesh is simply apparent to them,
through the custom of Israel which is Torah, that on Rosh Chodesh one does not do certain labors
(like sewing and the like) 87.
And the reason for the matter is –
because then it is revealed to them the emphasis that they were not involved in the sin of the Golden Calf 88,
the root of all sins 89.
So also in the matter of Rosh Chodesh one has an additional day,
an entire twenty-four hour period,
when the man occupies himself with labor and work as on weekdays,
as opposed to the woman,
regarding the work of sewing and the like,
this is Rosh Chodesh,
with all the storm involved.
Regarding this, the advantage of this day is apparent in the Mussaf prayer,
for prayer is "like a servant before his Master" 90,
and the Almighty gives the power that He is the "Master" of the Jew who stands before Him "like a servant" –
one has an additional day of Rosh Chodesh
(and regarding this Yom Tov and Rosh Hashanah),
when it is not only "the daily offerings according to their order" but also "the additional offerings according to their law".
From all the above is understood the advantage in two days of Rosh Chodesh –
that one has an additional day with all the aforementioned advantages.
And the question arises –
we only receive the reward of one day?
A Jew is not concerned with the reward;
איז א אידן ניט נוגע דער שכר;
the main thing is what he is "like a servant before his Master" –
he has in this the advantage of an additional elevated day!
And according to the ruling of the Rambam
(at length in Hilchos Teshuvah chapter 10)
that the perfection of service is when it is "for its own sake",
not in order to receive reward –
and through this one reaches a level that is higher than reward,
and as discussed at length that through the matter of doubt one reaches the choice of the Essence!
From all this is understood the advantage of two days of Rosh Chodesh and Yom Tov,
and certainly of Rosh Hashanah.
From this another matter is understood,
with an introduction:
According to what was said above,
that in two days of Rosh Chodesh there is a special advantage that is then revealed –
can one then say that the months that have only one day of Rosh Chodesh lack such an essential matter?!
One must say,
that also then these matters of "two days of Rosh Chodesh" exist,
only then it is not in a revealed manner,
therefore the matter of the additional offerings is only one day.
The question arises:
Where do we see this?
It is stated explicitly!
The language of the verse <sup>91</sup> regarding Rosh Chodesh is "and on your new moons" in the plural;
דער לשון הכתוב 91 בנוגע צו ראש חודש איז "ובראשי חדשיכם" לשון רבים;
which simply means,
that since there are "your months" in the plural,
several months in the year,
therefore it also says "new moons" in the plural –
as opposed to the festivals,
the first day of Pesach
(the Festival of Matzos)
or Yom Kippur and the like –
which are only once a year.
But in the Zohar 92
[which illuminates and brings out in the open that which is hidden in the revealed 93]
he stands on this verse and asks "And how many heads does the moon have?"
And he answers: "Rather, there are two heads in each and every month,
and they are Yaakov and Yosef, who are renewed upon the moon."
And as the matter is explained at length in Ohr HaTorah of the Tzemach Tzedek94,
that on Rosh Chodesh in general is the time of the union of "the sun and the moon",
Zeir Anpin and Malchus
(just as with the sun and moon simply,
where the moon receives light from the sun),
and "sun"
(Zeir Anpin)
(ז"א)
is "Yaakov",
and in order that the "sun" be drawn into the "moon",
there must be an intermediary between "sun" and "moon",
and this is the aspect of "Yosef",
"These are the generations of Yaakov, Yosef"95,
for he draws and reveals the matters that are hidden in Yaakov,
and draws the matters of Yaakov into the "moon",
Malchus.
And these are the two "heads",
the aspects of Yaakov and Yosef.
And the Tzemach Tzedek writes96,
"And to note from the matter that sometimes Rosh Chodesh is two days",
meaning that the matter of the two "heads" of the month is connected to two days of Rosh Chodesh,
as he brings there "as mentioned in Shmuel I chapter 2097, 'And it was on the morrow of the new moon, the second'"
[which is stated regarding David].
And according to this it is understood,
that although the simple explanation of the words of the Zohar is that there are two heads in every Rosh Chodesh,
which in the time of the Tanach
(when the conduct was according to the Written Torah)
was a rare thing,
only in that place mentioned in Shmuel,
and similarly regarding Rosh Hashanah in the time of Ezra etc.98 –
nevertheless, according to the words of the Tzemach Tzedek it is understood,
that the matter stands with emphasis and openly when there are two days of Rosh Chodesh simply,
and from this it is drawn into every Rosh Chodesh,
even one that has only one day.
[And as it is stated explicitly in the inner dimension of the Torah,
and the revealed Torah must reach the inner dimension of the Torah in order to explain this.]
And from this it is also understood regarding what was mentioned above about the superiority of two days of Rosh Chodesh –
that these matters are also drawn into every Rosh Chodesh,
even that which is only one day.
From this there is also the lesson regarding practical action in this time
(the end of the month of Tishrei and the beginning of the month of Cheshvan):
In the month of Tishrei a Jew stands in a state of "sun",
"like the face of the sun"99,
which is "the great luminary"100.
For the matters of Torah and mitzvos in general are matters of "the great luminary",
since in Torah and mitzvos the matter of diminution does not apply,
for every mitzvah in the Torah includes all the mitzvos,
and is a mitzvah from the Most High,
the true Infinite One,
Who "declares His words to Yaakov, His statutes and judgments to Israel"101,
these are His mitzvos,
it is understood that this is an immense multitude
(not merely a multitude).
And especially in the month of Tishrei which is "abundant in festivals"102,
a matter of multitude in Torah and mitzvos themselves.
And so it is also in the feeling of the person –
that the perfection of service is "with all your might",
without limitation103.
But the purpose of this boundlessness and multitude in Torah and mitzvos is –
that it should come down into the "moon",
into measure and limitation,
as we see that the mitzvos in the Torah are specifically with measure and limitation,
the four sections in tefillin
(no less and no more);
(לא פחות ולא יותר);
and similarly in the service of man,
that although from the aspect of the "person" it must be "with all your might",
nevertheless from the aspect of the "object" there must be measure and limitation104.
And this is emphasized in Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan –
when one passes from the month of Tishrei,
"sun",
abundant in festivals,
into the rest of the months of the year.
Then one must take the "Yaakov",
the face of the sun,
and draw him into "Yosef",
into the world,
into the mundane months,
as it was simply,
that "Yosef was brought down to Egypt"105,
and there he effected that "without you no man shall lift his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt"106.
And this is the empowerment that each one has from the "two days" of Rosh Chodesh,
when the service of Yosef is also emphasized,
"without you no man shall lift his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt" –
that every Jew has the power to be a master over the world,
through his holding onto Torah,
and taking upon himself the mission to implement in the world that it should be a vessel suitable to fulfill its purpose,
for the world sees that its perfection is dependent upon him,
when it will obey the Jew who brings down into it "the word of Hashem, this is the halachah",
until "beyond the letter of the law".
And it is understood simply,
even regarding a simple person,
a thing or a person that brings him to his perfection and upon whom his entire existence depends –
he is certainly grateful to that thing and does everything that is required regarding it.
And this is regarding the world which was created "for the sake of the Torah which is called beginning and for the sake of Israel who are called beginning"107,
that the world must obey the Torah and the Jewish people,
and not only that it "must" by way of compulsion,
but "and His kingdom they accepted upon themselves willingly"108,
as a Jew wants to carry out in the world and lead the world.
All of which comes down simply in "children, life, and ample sustenance",
as the Rambam rules109 that through the removal of all things that prevent and hinder, a Jew has the ability to fulfill his mission in the world,
to make the world a place that "He created it to be inhabited"110 through the seven Noahide commandments,
and furthermore –
a dwelling place in the lower realms,
through all six hundred and thirteen commandments of the Torah,
as has been discussed several times.
And particularly in our generation,
for the first name of the Nasi of our generation,
His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
is indeed "Yosef",
in whom were revealed the "these are the generations" of all the Nesiim who preceded him,
being in Egypt,
in the constraints and limitations of exile,
until through him there was the storm of the dissemination of the wellsprings outward.
And through this service, the destiny "In the future, Eretz Yisrael will spread to all lands"111 will soon be fulfilled,
so that even Egypt becomes Eretz Yisrael,
and as is known the saying of the Tzemach Tzedek112 that the service must consist of "making here Eretz Yisrael",
in the diaspora,
in exile,
And this will further hasten also the "In the future, Yerushalayim will spread throughout all Eretz Yisrael"111.
And they will stand, souls in bodies,
in the manner of a great congregation,
with our youngsters and our elders, our sons and our daughters,
in Yerushalayim, the holy city,
on the holy mountain,
in the holy Temple,
and in the Holy of Holies,
and out of joy and goodness of heart,
and in the ultimate perfection of Torah and its commandments,
and the perfection of the Holy Land and the holy people,
with all of them together,
the threefold unity,
which brings down in a revealed way the "third light"113 which comes through the general singular soul,
Moshiach our Righteous One,
speedily in our days, literally.
It is also customary to connect the farbrengen not only with the entirety of the weekly portion
(Parshat Noach),
but also with the part of the portion relevant to this day,
as the saying of the Alter Rebbe114,
that one must live with the weekly portion and the daily portion,
which in our matter is the part from "third" until "fourth" in Parshat Noach.
And in this part of the portion, a complete and full matter is explained,
from its beginning to its end –
the matter of the Flood.
In the first verse115 it says "And the flood was forty days upon the earth etc.",
and at the conclusion of the section it says116 "And in the second month
[the month of Cheshvan. According to the first opinion that Rashi brings117,
the opinion of Rabbi Eliezer118]
on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth dried",
and Rashi explains that this means "it became dry as is proper",
i.e. the ground became dry as was its usual state of the earth.
One must understand:
Why does Rashi use here an unusual expression
(in his commentary on the Torah),
"as is proper",
and not "as usual" and the like.
This will be understood by prefacing an explanation of the entirety of the part of the portion:
Immediately after the Flood, there was the oath of "I will not again etc. anymore etc."119,
that the Flood was only once,
and will not be again –
then why was the entire story of the Flood made into a part and a portion in the Torah,
whose essence is instruction for the future.
And as the Gemara brings in many places120 the question
(and a rule)
in matters of halacha –
"What happened, happened",
that all these matters that were only in the past,
it is not understood why one must speak about them now.
And furthermore –
"The Torah is eternal"121,
i.e. the matter is not merely relevant to the future,
but it is relevant always,
in an eternal manner!
And particularly, in the Torah itself, this is an entire section and portion in a weekly portion of the Torah!
The question is simple for a simple Jew –
how can one say regarding a matter that will no longer be,
that it was once and never again,
and in a manner of an oath –
that just as he learns the entire Torah,
and knows that this is an eternal thing,
and an eternal instruction and guidance,
so too must he learn that part of the Torah that speaks about the Flood?
Regarding this, it is not understood in the inwardness of the matter,
according to the inwardness of the Torah and the homily and allusion in the Torah:
Our Sages, of blessed memory, say122 that the Torah preceded the world,
meaning that the Torah existed before the world was created.
And according to the simple explanation of "preceded the world",
that it is connected to the world,
for specifically then the term "precedence" applies,
because one cannot use a term of precedence regarding two matters that have no relation between them;
ווארום מ'קען ניט זאגן א לשון של קדימה לגבי שני ענינים וואס האבן צווישן זיך קיין שייכות ניט;
specifically when they stand in the same order of times and in the same "category",
then one can investigate and expound "who preceded whom" –
and nevertheless it is said that it "preceded the world".
So since it "preceded the world" –
it is certainly a sure thing that it preceded the account of the known sin,
which occurred not in the first moment of the world's coming into being, etc.
On this, Chassidus asks the question123 –
how does the account of the known sin come into the Torah that "preceded the world"!
And regarding this, it is understood concerning our matter –
the account of the Flood,
for the Flood was a result of the chain of descent of "one transgression leads to another transgression"124 over ten generations125,
beginning from the known sin,
and then the generation of Enosh, etc.126.
So how do all these matters of transgressions and deficiency come into the Torah that "preceded the world"?!
In the Torah, the concept of sin and deficiency is not applicable at all,
and certainly it preceded the concept of transgression in its simple sense in the world,
and certainly to great transgressions,
and certainly to the order of the chain of descent of ten generations,
until the matter of the Flood –
so how does the entire matter come into the Torah?!
Rather, the point of the explanation in this is alluded to in the well-known story of the leader of our generation,
regarding the Mitteler Rebbe and the Alter Rebbe127:
"Our master, the Alter Rebbe, himself was the one reading from the Torah. Once, in Liadi, there was no Parshat Ki Tavo,
and the Mitteler Rebbe heard –
and he was still a youth before his bar mitzvah –
the reading from behind. The distress from the curses in the admonition brought him to heart pain,
until on Yom Kippur the Alter Rebbe was uncertain whether he could fast.
When they asked the Mitteler Rebbe, 'But every year this portion is read,' he answered:
'When Father reads, no curses are heard.'"
What is seemingly not understood:
It is certain that when the Alter Rebbe read the admonition in the Torah,
he read it according to its law,
with the vowels and cantillation notes,
and all the more so with the exact words –
so what does it mean that then "no curses are heard"?
That the Alter Rebbe did not read the admonition regarding himself,
but regarding the situation of the Jewish people,
that when they will conduct themselves in such and such a manner
(improperly)
then the matter of the curses, etc., will be –
so what does it mean "no curses are heard",
when this is the content of the portion that the Alter Rebbe read?!
Rather, one of the explanations in this matter is –
that as these matters stand in the Torah in its own essence,
"when Father reads",
even the undesirable matters are in such a manner,
that "no curses are heard",
because it is entirely good.
And regarding this, it is also understood concerning our matter:
All these undesirable matters as they stand in the Torah –
they are in essence above all matters of great transgressions,
above all matters of ordinary transgressions,
and above all matters of sin, from the term deficiency!
In the Torah there is nothing but "good" alone,
for the Torah is entirely good,
it is "the wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He" –
and the concept
(that the Torah is "the wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He"),
pertains to every "letter" in the Torah,
as is known128 that when there is an extra letter vav in the word "veshasata shesa"129 –
the entire Torah scroll is not proper!
And this is also understood from a law in the revealed part of the Torah130,
that "and the sister of Lot was Timna"131 and "I am Hashem your God"132 have the same force
(and holiness).
For the difference between "I am Hashem your God" and "and the sister of Lot was Timna" is from one extreme to the other:
"And the sister of Lotan was Timna" was indeed the lowest level within the children of Noach themselves,
as Rashi brings <sup>133</sup> that she was born through a matter that is the opposite even of the "Seven Noachide Laws";
ווי רש"י ברענגט 133 אז זי איז געבוירן געווארן דורך אן ענין וואס איז היפך אפילו פון "שבע מצוות בני נח";
and "I am Hashem your G-d" is the ultimate perfection within G-dliness itself,
within Hashem your G-d itself,
that "I am that I am" 134 is drawn down into "Hashem your G-d"!
And nevertheless, it is said that both have the same force and the same holiness and perfection!
This compels that the matter of "And the sister of Lotan was Timna" as it stands in the Torah
(although its plain meaning is as it is,
"sister" literally and "Lotan" literally and "Timna" literally),
is the ultimate holiness and purity and perfection –
because it "preceded the world",
it is entirely good.
Based on this, one will also understand regarding the section of the Flood:
As the section of the Flood stands in the Torah, as it "preceded the world" –
it is the ultimate perfection and holiness,
to such a perfection as the perfection of "I am Hashem your G-d",
i.e., as "I am Hashem your G-d" stands revealed.
This is also the inner meaning of "when Father reads, no curses are heard",
because "when Father reads",
as the Alter Rebbe read the section of the Rebuke,
he read it as it stands in the Torah, as it "preceded the world".
He indeed read it down here in this world,
but at the time of the act, he stood in the World of Atzilus.
And as has been discussed several times 134 what is stated in Chassidus
(in Likkutei Torah, Discourses for Rosh Hashanah 135 and in many places 136),
that by Moshe Rabbeinu, while being below, the level of Atzilus shone,
i.e., that when Moshe Rabbeinu spoke with Pharaoh, king of Egypt,
in a city "full of idols" 137,
by Moshe there was "the Shechinah speaks from his throat" 138,
and in the language of Chassidus 139,
that then Moshe was in the World of Atzilus!
Pharaoh was even lower than the physical World of Asiyah,
for within the husks themselves, he was the lowest husk 140 and said 141 "My river is mine, and I have made myself"
(not like ordinary husks that say "the G-d of gods is called to me" 142),
and as Rashi
(in his commentary on the Torah)
brings 143 the reason that "behold, he goes out to the water" 144 is "because he was making himself a god" –
and with him Moshe Rabbeinu spoke while standing in the World of Atzilus!
And this is also understood in the plain meaning of Scripture –
as Rashi brings there,
that Moshe found Pharaoh when he was in a state of descent regarding human beings.
But this was the achievement of Moshe Rabbeinu,
that while being in Atzilus and "the Shechinah speaks from his throat" –
he spoke with Pharaoh, king of Egypt,
the ultimate descent,
and in such a manner that Pharaoh should hear and listen and it should affect him,
and not in a way that he should cease to be a "ruler in the dome" 145,
but that he should remain a "ruler in the dome",
and as a "ruler in the dome" should be "send out My people and they will serve Me" 146!
And from all this it is understood regarding our matter –
that "when Father reads"
(when Father reads),
the rebukes of the portion of Ki Savo were heard as they are above,
in the true reality of the matters in the Torah,
in a manner of ultimate good and holiness.
And from this it is also understood regarding our matter in "the section of the Flood",
that the reason the section stands in the Torah is because essentially the section is ultimate good.
However, all that was said only informs of the reality,
that the section of the Flood is essentially,
as it is in the Torah,
a matter of good, etc.
But one must have an explanation and intellectual reasoning in the matter,
so that it should be understood also to the lower man,
that he should comprehend it in his wisdom, understanding, and knowledge,
until he can explain it to his animal soul,
and furthermore,
to the animal soul of a simple Jew.
For the Torah was given to every single Jew,
"The Torah that Moshe commanded us is the inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov" 147,
together with the statement that it is indeed "the wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He",
but "He gave us His Torah" –
it is certain that it must be understandable to a simple person in simplicity.
And especially since even a simple person knows that "from the mouth of the Most High does not go forth evil" 148,
especially in the revealed wisdom of the Holy One, blessed be He –
he must certainly understand how this is in "the section of the Flood".
And this must be understood according to what is explained in Chabad Chassidus,
whose purpose is that it should be "they will be sustained from it"149,
that one should understand the concepts of the inner dimension of the Torah in a manner comprehensible to the human intellect.
Indeed, we find the explanation of this in Chassidus,
which is also alluded to in the revealed aspect of Torah,
and even more so than in a manner of allusion
(and as has been discussed several times, all concepts of the inner dimension of the Torah have a source in the revealed aspect of Torah).
The Tzemach Tzedek explains150
(regarding what is stated at the beginning of today's Chumash lesson –
"And the flood was forty days upon the earth"),
that the number "forty" corresponds to the forty se'ah that a mikveh must have.
And a mikveh that has forty se'ah purifies from all matters,
even from the impurity of a corpse151!
Although one needs additional matters,
such as sprinkling, etc.,
but in addition to this, one must have immersion in a kosher mikveh of forty se'ah152.
And from this we already have an understanding of the positive and good aspect of the flood,
that it is
(not an undesirable matter,
but on the contrary)
a matter of purity!
Furthermore:
Not only is the matter of the flood a matter for good,
but also the cause of the flood is not necessarily an undesirable matter,
for we see by a mikveh of purity simply
(which must have forty se'ah),
that one immerses in a mikveh not only from impurity to purity,
but also for an addition of purity and holiness.
And as even a simple person sees,
that the Kohen Gadol immerses five immersions on Yom Kippur153,
although seven days before this he was in the ultimate purity and separation154 –
for the first immersion is due to the additional holiness of Yom Kippur,
which is a most sublime holiness,
and later there are four ascents within that holiness itself,
which is why there must be four immersions.
Thus it is understandable,
that the concept of a mikveh can be connected with a very good and lofty matter –
like entering the time of the "Holy of Holies",
Yom Kippur,
and into the place of the Holy of Holies.
As discussed above, every matter is also alluded to in the revealed aspect of Torah.
We find the foundation for this in Rashi's commentary:
Rashi says on the verse *154 "And the rain was upon the earth" –
"And later it says 'and the flood was,'
but when He brought them down He brought them down with mercy,
if they would repent they would be rains of blessing,
and when they did not repent they became a flood."
We see here clearly,
that essentially,
"when He brought them down",
the matter of the flood is actually a matter of blessing,
it depends on the state of the generation and the recipients what becomes of it in actuality. It turns out,
that as the matter is in its essence, it is actually a matter of good and blessing.
And this is alluded to in Rashi at the end of the lesson,
where it states,
as above,
that "the earth dried" means "dry according to its law",
that after the flood the world was established in a state as it is proper.
And in this there are several levels:
Firstly,
the simple matter,
that during the flood the world was in a state where "the constellations did not serve"
(as Rashi brings155)
and all were enclosed in the ark –
and when "the earth dried" it became "He formed it to be inhabited"156 simply.
And in addition to this, there is the allusion in that Rashi specifically uses the term "according to its law"
(not "as usual" and the like) –
which alludes to "Torah",
"for the sake of the Torah which is called the beginning",
and in the Torah itself,
not the part of Torah as it is connected with intellect and reason and understanding,
discussion in Torah,
but specifically the halachah in Torah,
which is revealed to others,
until it brings about in the world,
a matter of "the ways of the world"157.
And in this is also alluded the inner explanation of the effect that the flood had on the world,
and consequently also the innovation in the matter of "dry according to its law" even regarding the blessing at the beginning of the portion,
"rains of blessing":
When one says "In the beginning –
for the sake of the Torah which is called the beginning and for the sake of Israel who are called the beginning",
that because of Torah and Israel the creation of the heavens and the earth and all their host occurred,
a question can arise:
Since Israel exists,
and Torah exists –
why is there a need for a world?!
Let Israel study Torah,
and there is no need for heavens and earth and all their host?
It is therefore understood,
that although Israel and the Torah preceded the world and have in themselves the wondrous quality etc.,
nevertheless a novelty and a higher concept is revealed through the fact that Israel and the Torah are in the "world,"
in the world.
And simply:
the concept of "preceded the world" is a matter of "potential" and "in potential";
דער ענין פון "קדמה לעולם" איז אן ענין של "יכולת" און "בכח";
but in order for it to be "in actuality"158,
one needs a world.
And accordingly, it is understood regarding the "Flood":
When the world was created, it was entirely covered with water159.
That is, not like at the time of the Flood,
when the dry land was first covered with water,
and in the Land of Israel there was no water at all160 –
rather, the world was initially covered with water
(according to the simple meaning of the verse161).
Afterwards, however, the Almighty desired that a Jew should reveal in the world through the study of Torah etc.,
"which Hashem created to do, to rectify"162.
Therefore, the Torah relates the order of the generations after the creation of the world,
that there were several righteous individuals,
like Adam
(especially before he sinned),
Methuselah, Lemech,
Enoch,
until Noah, who was "a righteous man, perfect in his generations"163.
Afterwards,
when the Almighty desired that a higher elevation should come to the world,
a concept of "a new world" *163,
with the entire storm of the matter that brings about thereafter the creation of new heavens and a new earth,
and according to the simple understanding of the matter,
that Noah brought an offering etc.164 and this is the concept of "a flood according to the law" –
a novelty and revelation in the "for the sake of the Torah,"
a new concept.
And regarding practical application:
When a simple person asks,
what is the concept of the "portion of the Flood" in the Torah,
and especially since he knows that the Torah existed before the creation of the world,
because the world was created "for the sake of the Torah" –
then how is it possible that in the Torah there is the entire story of the Flood before the world existed and before man was in the Garden of Eden –
he has a twofold lesson:
Firstly,
there is the concept of the mikveh,
like the Flood which was the concept of the mikveh and purification.
But the main point is –
that he should not remain stuck in the mikveh –
there must be the "dry land":
he indeed becomes pure in the mikveh,
but after this he must go out and put on a tallit katan with alacrity,
and lay tefillin and give charity, which is "equivalent to all the commandments"165.
And on the contrary –
the actual fulfillment of the commandments in practice is even more precious than when one stands in the mikveh and is simply pure,
because the intention is to go out into the public domain,
and enter one's house and affix a mezuzah in the house,
and then go to the synagogue and from the synagogue to the study hall etc.166.
And accordingly, it is understood in particular regarding this time,
the transition from the month of Tishrei to the month of Cheshvan –
that the month of Tishrei is "abundant in festivals,"
and according to Torah law the minority is nullified by the majority,
so also the few days that are not festivals are nullified within the festivals,
within the "festivals,"
in contrast, Cheshvan is a month of ordinary days –
one must know that the main service is the "dry land,"
going out into the world.
And in more detail:
The month of Cheshvan is a month when the concept of "the Flood" occurs
(as it was literally) –
one must know that "Flood" contains two concepts:
On one hand, this is indeed a concept of "Flood" for the negative etc.,
but together with this, the purpose and goal of it is,
that there should be the Flood for the positive,
the concept of purification,
until the "dry land"
(which also occurred in the month of Cheshvan).
And accordingly, this is also in the service of man,
as explained in Chassidus167,
that the waters of the Flood allude to the concept of "many waters" which "cannot extinguish the love etc."168
(and this is explained in the discourses on the portion of Noach,
although this is a verse in Song of Songs –
and the simple reason,
because in the portion of Noach it speaks about "waters,"
the waters of the Flood),
the "waters of insolence"169,
thoughts that distract from the service of Hashem –
nevertheless, there is in this a concept for the positive,
firstly,
even in this very verse "many waters,"
as the second interpretation in Chassidus that this means "waters of holiness" *169 –
as all this is explained at length in the discourses,
and especially in the notes, glosses, and additions of the Tzemach Tzedek
(in the commentary on the discourses<sup>170</sup>);
(באור התורה אויף די דרושים 170);
And in addition to this –
it is indeed explained in the discourses that the waters of the flood are connected to “like the days of old, like ancient years,”
“like days of antiquity,”
before the sin –
and the beginning of the verse speaks about the true and complete redemption
(as above, section 10).
And from all this it is understood,
that when one stands in the transition from the month of Tishrei to the month of MarCheshvan,
one has the power to attain the ultimate perfection of “the dry land appeared,”
even to the matter of “like the days of old, like ancient years.”
And this is the lesson that one has when going out from the month of Tishrei into the month of MarCheshvan,
and standing in a time that connects Tishrei with MarCheshvan –
That not only should one not be frightened of the world,
but on the contrary,
one should see
that the world which “was created in its fullness”170 should come to a higher state and condition,
“These are the generations of Peretz,”171
generations of fullness,
a greater perfection than the world was when it was created,
and this is accomplished through the service of man in the world.172
And “In the beginning –
for the sake of the Torah and for the sake of Israel,”
the world was created so that a Jew,
through the study of Torah,
should elevate it,
even relative to how the world was before its descent,
when the world was water within water,
before the sin.
And this is also the matter of “dry ground according to its law” –
which came about through the action of man,
through the prayer of Noach.
And the beginning of the matter was on Rosh HaShanah,
“on the first day of the month,”
according to the simple meaning of Scripture,
and the conclusion of the matter,
the “dry land appeared,”
was in the month of MarCheshvan.
And from this it is also understood,
that although the service of man must be in a manner of “they shall not cease,”
without the matter of “the service of the righteous,”
one must nevertheless also accomplish the “bringing back the righteous in repentance,”173
so that the righteous should also have the quality of penitents,
through the fact that one conducts oneself not only according to the Shulchan Aruch,
but also “beyond the letter of the law,”
but this itself is the conduct and order of the righteous,
“according to its law,”
according to order and law.
It is understood from all this,
that when one thinks about the month of MarCheshvan,
and one begins to go into action in the month of MarCheshvan,
and one travels away,
and one goes out from the synagogue and study hall of the Nasi of our generation,
into the “outside,”
each one according to his matter –
Each one must know,
that he travels to his place with a holy mission,
“from Hashem are the steps of a man established,”174
and according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov175
(which the Nasi of our generation transmitted in the name of his father,
who heard it from the Baal Shem Tov) –
“And it shall be176 when you come into the land… and you shall put it in a basket –
clothing the lights in vessels
(with the matters hinted at in the acronym of “basket,”
cantillation notes, vowel points, letters177]…
and you shall go to the place –
this is the matter of Divine Providence –
which Hashem your G-d will choose –
that when a Jew goes to a place,
it is not that he goes, but rather he is led,
by the supernal Providence
(and as is known178 the explanation of the verse “from Hashem are the steps of a man established”],
is that when he comes to a place, the intention is –
to cause His name to dwell there –
to publicize G-dliness in the world,”
to make for Him, blessed be He, a dwelling place in the lower realms.
And in order that there should be a “dwelling place in the lower realms,” one must have the “dry land appeared,”
until “dry ground according to its law,”
the heavens and earth and all their hosts should be as is proper,
and one should perform the service in this with joy and a good heart,
according to what is stated in the Shulchan Aruch,
“according to its law,”
continually in their order.
But what then –
one has only just gone out of the month of Tishrei?
This is not a matter of going away from there, G-d forbid,
because “holiness does not move from its place.”179
And as the Baal Shem Tov says,
and transmits it through the Maggid,
and afterwards it comes to the Alter Rebbe,
and through the Nasi of our generation it comes to each and every one of us,
the small with the great and the small with the great,
one should know,
that all matters were given solely so that one should carry out the mission from the Most High,
“to make for Him, blessed be He, a dwelling place in the lower realms.”
And may it be His will,
that one should perform the service in such a manner that one takes the power for this from the month of Tishrei,
which was blessed by the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself,180
and in a manner of “the seventh month,”
sworn, satiated, and satiating,181
it is a satiated one that satiates all the months and days of the year,
with the “light of satiety” that comes from the Most High,
“from His full, open, holy, and expansive hand,”
and “in the light of the face of the King of life,”182
“with children, life, and ample sustenance.”
May it be His will,
that each one should add even more to the resolutions he made in the month of Tishrei,
because together with the "untying of the bundles"
(as per the well-known saying185)
each one has the power to add,
again and again,
until beyond all measure.
And whoever is early and whoever is diligent is praiseworthy,
and whoever increases is praiseworthy.
And as has been spoken several times,
that when a Jew resolves even a matter that is beyond his capacity
(or it appears that it is beyond his capacity,
or it is truly beyond his capacity) –
the Most High combines the "vessels",
"and He will sustain you"186,
and combines the good deed with the good thought and good resolution187.
And with speed and alacrity and with strength and completeness,
and speedily, in our very own days.
Regarding the custom of stopping for the daily portion of Chumash,
there is also the custom of stopping for the daily portion of Rambam,
as mentioned and discussed at length in the recent farbrengens.
In today's Rambam portion we also find a matter connected with "water".
The beginning of today's portion of Rambam is188:
"The bones of a fish and its skin, if one makes vessels from them, do not receive impurity at all, etc."
(And he adds,
that this is not only regarding sea creatures,
but also regarding vegetation]
"And likewise the green [growth] that is on the surface of the water and the like,
for everything that is in the sea is pure."
And behold,
regarding all the laws of the Torah, the Rambam writes189: "Although all the statutes of the Torah are decrees, as we explained at the end of [Tractate] Me'ilah
[as mentioned in a previous farbrengen190]
it is fitting to contemplate them, and whatever reason you can give, give a reason,
for the early Sages said that King Solomon understood most of the reasons for all the statutes of the Torah
[as he brings elsewhere191 "that Solomon knew the reason for all the commandments, except for the Red Heifer"]...
And most of the laws of the Torah...
are to correct opinions and to straighten all deeds."
And in particular, he writes at the end of the Laws of Mikva'ot regarding all the laws of impurity and purity,
that although they are "decrees of the Scriptural text" –
"nevertheless, there is a hint in the matter",
a matter of ethical instruction and teaching,
that "just as one who directs his heart to become pure, once he immerses, he is pure...
so too, one who directs his heart to purify his soul...
once he agrees in his heart...
and brings his soul into the waters of knowledge –
he is pure."
From this it is understood regarding our matter –
that also in this law of "everything that is in the sea is pure" there is a lesson and instruction in the service of Hashem and the correction of character traits, etc.
And one can say the explanation of this,
according to what Chassidus192 explains regarding the advantage of fish in the sea over other created beings:
Fish were created in such a manner,
that they must always be found in their source of life,
and they cannot have any mistake as to what is their source of life,
because as soon as they separate from the sea, it is the opposite of their life and existence193 –
and therefore they have the same law as the water of the sea194,
because they are nullified to the water of the sea195.
From this it is understood also regarding our matter,
that when the world is in such a state that it is nullified to its source of life,
the word of Hashem that brings into being and gives life to the world at every single moment196,
so that it cannot do anything that is the opposite of its life –
it does not receive impurity.
What is essentially the nature of every creation:
Why is there an existence of doing contrary to the will of Hashem –
because one does not feel that He is bringing into being and giving life to the thing at that very moment;
דערפאר וואס מ'פילט ניט אז ער איז מהווה ומחי' די זאך באותו רגע ממש;
if, however, he would feel how he is brought into being at every moment from the word of Hashem –
he would not be able to become impure,
because he would not have the choice to do so.
And this is a matter that even a simple person can understand:
Suppose everyone would know and see what is his life-force that brings him into being and gives him life at every single moment –
would he then be able to do anything against this?!
Everyone understands simply,
that it cannot be so!
It is only that since he does not feel his life-force,
or he also does not understand it,
and even if he understands, his understanding alone is not enough,
because he can be bribed by a pleasure,
a desire,
or any bribe whatsoever –
therefore it does not affect him.
When, however, he feels it in actuality –
it is exactly as a person cannot flee from air,
because without air a person cannot live –
so too, he cannot flee from his G‑dly life-force!
He does not need to wait for the world that will be "after one hundred and twenty years,"
but exactly as he feels immediately in the moment when he has no air to breathe,
and runs immediately to a place that has air,
or he initially does not go out from the place that has air –
so too is it regarding the Divine vitality.
Regarding air, even a simple person sees this,
in the most simple life –
only regarding the Divine vitality he needs to know that this is like his "air."
And this is the virtue of fish,
which feel at all times,
that the sea,
which is the source of their life,
is something from which they cannot separate –
so too must a person be,
through contemplation,
that he should feel that he is always connected to the source of his life,
with the Most High,
and consequently he can do nothing contrary to the will of his source.
And this is the lesson from today's lesson in Rambam –
that "everything that is in the sea is pure,"
that just as there can be a reality of a person who has not yet used his intellect to know about his connection to the source of his life,
or another matter has intervened,
consequently there can be a reality of the opposite of purity –
he is told that he should become like a "fish" which is "from the creatures of the water,"
he will be "pure"!
And this can also be connected to the matter of the flood mentioned above –
that the matter of "rains of blessing,"
the waters for the positive,
also alludes to the matter of "everything that is in the sea is pure,"
that one must be connected to the source of his life like every thing that is from the creatures of the water.
And here is the place to conclude what was discussed on the Shabbat before this one197,
regarding Rashi's commentary in Parshat Bereishit,
where we were left with a question.
I thought,
that perhaps it would disturb Jews from sleeping,
consequently one must say an answer more quickly;
במילא דארף מען שנעלער זאגן א תירוץ;
but,
thank the Most High,
it did not disturb anyone's sleep:
they did not know the question and did not know the answer!
For the question is in that which is stated in the verse198 "And Hashem Elokim formed from the ground every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called each living soul, that was its name,
And the man called names to all the cattle and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field" –
so seemingly it is not understood,
what happened with the names of the fish?!
And from whichever side:
If the fish were also brought before the man,
and he gave them names,
this should have been stated in the verse;
האט דאס געדארפט שטיין אין פסוק;
and if not –
then what is the reason? Fish also have a "living soul,"
a soul –
should it not also have been regarding them "whatever the man called each living soul, that was its name"?
Regarding this there was a reasoning and a supposition199 to answer this:
Rashi brings,
that the reason for that which is stated here "And Hashem Elokim formed,"
an unusual expression,
not "and He created" or "and He made" –
"And in words of Aggadah,
this formation is an expression of subjugation and conquest, as 'when you besiege a city'200,
that He subdued them under the hand of man,"
a matter of dominion,
i.e., that the giving of names was connected with that which the Most High made the man rule and dominate over all the creations,
in a manner of "when you besiege a city etc. until it is subdued."
Consequently it is already understood why the matter of fish is not brought here –
because a man
(not necessarily a Jew –
we are speaking about Adam the First from whom afterwards came all the nations of the earth)
can lead and use specifically beasts and cattle and birds,
but not so with fish of the sea, he cannot lead them.
He can catch them and eat them –
but not lead them.
So according to this it turns out,
that by bringing the "words of Aggadah" Rashi clarifies the matter:
Since here it is speaking about a matter of subjugation and dominion,
this applies only to cattle and beasts of the land,
as a five-year-old to Scripture sees that his father or he himself can lead cattle and beasts;
ווי א בן חמש למקרא זעט אז זיין פאטער אדער ער אליין קען אנפירן מיט בהמות וחיות;
and similarly regarding birds –
there are those who lead chickens or doves
(a dove or a turtledove),
one has a "dovecote" etc. where one leads them etc.;
מ'האט א "שובך" וכיו"ב וואו מ'פירט אן מיט זיי וכו';
but not so regarding fish, there cannot be any dominion and subjugation.
Which seemingly is a reason acceptable to the intellect –
but the Most High helps that the full verse the Scripture spoke is the opposite!
It says earlier in the verse201,
that the Almighty said to Adam and Chava –
"And rule over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the heaven"!
So we see that the matter of "rule" also applies to "fish of the sea",
and on the contrary,
this is stated even at the beginning
(before fowl of the heaven etc.).
I caught myself,
that since this is a "blatant difficulty" –
it is actually such a simple thing,
which has the most simple reason,
to the extent that Rashi does not need to explain it at all!
And of course,
that one need not ask this of a teacher;
אז מ'דארף עס ניט פרעגן ביי א מלמד;
because the teacher does not initially seek any resolution to the question,
as I saw with my teacher!
What is the simple explanation:
The benefit of a name a child understands,
that it is in order to call the bearer of the name by his name;
אז דאס איז כדי צו רופן דעם בעל השם מיט זיין נאמען;
that if one calls him by his name he will obey,
or he will turn around,
see what is wanted from him or what is said to him etc.
Therefore the matter of giving names is specifically suited to animals and fowl –
which can hear when one calls them by their name;
וואס קענען הערן ווי מ'רופט זיי בשמם;
but fish are found in the sea,
in water –
one can shout the name of the fish the whole day,
but the fish will not hear it!...
And especially the great sea creatures which are found deep in the sea –
they certainly cannot hear when one calls them.
Therefore Rashi does not need to explain the matter,
because it is understood simply to a five-year-old studying Scripture.
However, it is not understood according to Chassidus:
Since "his name which is called upon him in the Holy Tongue"202 brings into being and sustains and maintains every thing in the world –
so what difference does it make whether he hears or he does not hear –
but it brings him into being and sustains him203!
And in addition to this –
there is an even greater blatant difficulty according to Chassidus:
There is a verse in Yechezkel regarding the four Chayos of the Merkavah204.
Although who studies this Yechezkel:
one may study it sometimes in cheder,
and afterwards one occupies oneself with the study of Gemara and Poskim,
Rishonim and Acharonim –
but the matter is brought in many places in Chassidus205,
that there is the supernal Merkavah,
and through the Merkavah all influences are drawn down into the world.
It says in the verse that in the Merkavah there are "the face of a man and the face of a lion on the right for the four of them, and the face of an ox on the left for the four of them, and the face of an eagle for the four of them"206,
through which four "faces" the influence from the supernal Man upon the throne is drawn –
to all creatures in the world.
It is explained in many places207,
that from the face of the lion vitality is drawn to "wild animals",
because the lion is the king among wild animals208,
from the ox it is drawn into domestic animals,
because the ox is the king among domestic animals208,
and from the eagle into fowl because the eagle is the king among fowl208.
According to this, the question becomes –
what about the king among fish,
the "Leviathan"?!
It is stated nowhere that there is a fifth leg in the Merkavah,
and heaven forbid to say so –
there are no more than the four legs of the Merkavah,
as it says in the verse,
and in the books of Chassidus and in the holy Tanya!
Thus the question becomes –
what happens with fish?
And there one cannot answer the aforementioned resolution,
regarding Rashi's commentary,
simply.
Give to the wise and he will become wiser.
Since we spoke several matters from the Written Torah and the Oral Torah and the discourses of our Nesi'im;
אזוי ווי מ'האט גערעדט כמה ענינים פון תושב"כ ותושבע"פ און מאמרי רבותינו נשיאינו;
in addition to this, those who have not yet prayed Maariv
(or those who prayed Maariv a long time before the farbrengen)
will add in prayer and song and the melody "He will build the Beis HaMikdash speedily in our days" –
thus having both matters of Torah and prayer;
האט מען ביידע ענינים פון תורה ותפלה;
Afterwards they will also add the "third leg",
the matter of tzedakah,
as is usual at such farbrengens,
by distributing
(by means of the tankisten)
to each one a dollar in order to give it to tzedakah at the appropriate time,
and with addition from their own.
May it be His will,
that from this "threefold cord"209 one should come very soon to the third Beis HaMikdash,
through the third redemption and the study of the third Torah,
and the fulfillment of the mitzvos which are in the third Torah and connected to Moshe who is also a third and from the tribe of Levi which is a third tribe210 –
which is "the first redeemer is the final redeemer"211 –
very soon,
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach.
The Rebbe shlita instructed the shliach tzibbur shlit"a to play "Yehi ratzon etc. He will build the Beis HaMikdash bimheirah and grant us our portion in Your Torah".
Afterwards he instructed to play from the beginning again.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
After the final blessing he gave the food to the honorable R. M.Y. shiyy.
(for the guests shiyy.).
His Holy Honor the Rebbe shlita distributed to the "tankists" shiyy. dollars in order to distribute them among the congregation,
to each one one dollar for the purpose of giving to charity.
Before his departure he began to play "For with joy you shall go forth."
