A
א
It is a farbrengen connected to Shabbat Mevarchim.
That this is one of the matters and enactments of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Nasi of our generation,
that one should endeavor to make a farbrengen on every Shabbat Mevarchim. And upon this applies the rule as in all matters of holiness,
that it must always be "ascending in holiness",
until a true ascent –
which is an incomparable ascent. And so we also see regarding the enactment that a farbrengen should be made on Shabbat Mevarchim,
which he publicized and ordered to be printed –
that this is going and spreading among more and more Jews of the Diaspora of Israel,
that when it becomes spread throughout all the Diaspora of Israel, it then receives the force of a positive commandment and a negative commandment,
according to the ruling of the Rambam.
This is always a general matter on every Shabbat Mevarchim
(that one should then make a farbrengen).
On Shabbat Mevarchim itself, a special matter is added on this Shabbat Mevarchim.
And as an example, as this is regarding "the time of our joy":
All festivals are "festivals for joy",
but within this itself, more joy is added on the festival of Sukkot when we also say "the time of our joy",
and within this itself, more joy is added on Shemini Atzeret,
and more joy –
on Simchat Torah,
as follows.
As an example of this, this is also regarding Shabbat:
Every Shabbat contains within itself the common element that Shabbat is "sanctified and established",
and that then there is the "Vayechulu" from the term of completion and delight of the days of the week preceding it,
and from it the days of the week following it are blessed.
To this is added on Shabbat itself an elevation. On Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh,
when then one blesses not only six or seven days
(as on every Shabbat),
but an entire month. And because of this special matter on Shabbat itself on Shabbat Mevarchim –
one then makes a farbrengen,
according to the enactment of the Rebbe, my father-in-law.
Afterwards, on Shabbat Mevarchim itself, an advantage is added in this Shabbat Mevarchim –
Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Cheshvan.
B
ב
And the explanation:
Regarding the matter of Shabbat Mevarchim, the Torah is known that the Rebbe, my father-in-law, conveyed in the name of the three shepherds together –
the Baal Shem Tov,
the Maggid and the Alter Rebbe –
therefore, through this, the three shepherds become unified:
"The seventh month which is the first month of the months of the year, the Holy One, blessed be He, Himself blesses it on Shabbat Mevarchim which is the last Shabbat of the month of Elul,
and with this power, Israel blesses the months eleven times a year."
And afterwards he continues regarding what the blessing consists of:
"It is written, 'You are standing today,'
that 'today' refers to Rosh Hashanah which is the day of judgment, etc.,
'and you are standing' enduring and existing,
and this means that they prevail in judgment,
and on the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah, which is the last Shabbat of the month of Elul, we then read the portion of 'You are standing,'
for this is the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, on Shabbat Mevarchim of the seventh month, which is the one who swears and satisfies with abundant goodness all of Israel for the entire year."
That is, that on Shabbat Mevarchim Tishrei, the Almighty blesses Rosh Chodesh Tishrei,
which is also Rosh Hashanah,
with a blessing that Jews should then be "standing and enduring",
in a manner of "a king standing",
like kings,
and furthermore –
that they should have the power to coronate the Almighty on Rosh Hashanah,
when then it is "coronate Me over you",
"coronate Me" –
specifically by Jews,
and "over you",
specifically over Jews.
That this is indeed a most elevated matter,
especially according to what is explained in Chassidus,
that this comes about through the fact that Jews build the structure of Malchut,
and all the levels in Malchut,
until Malchut of Atzilut,
which Jews build through the fact that they arouse the innerness of Above,
until the innerness of delight,
and then it is drawn from there through all the levels down to below.
And since this is such an elevated matter,
therefore the Almighty blesses
(on this Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah)
Rosh Hashanah and thereby gives power to Jews that they should be able to coronate the Almighty as King.
And together with this that the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, on the Shabbat of blessing Tishrei is for Rosh Hashanah,
this is also a blessing for Rosh Chodesh Tishrei which includes the entire month of Tishrei
[including also the festival of Sukkot when then the revelation of all the matters that stood "in concealment" on Rosh Hashanah is revealed, including the matter of "make Me king over you"],
until –
also the last Shabbat of the month of Tishrei,
Shabbat of blessing Cheshvan,
which is the first Shabbat of blessing that Jews bless the month with the power of the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, on the Shabbat of blessing Tishrei.
And based on this is understood the superiority in Shabbat of blessing Cheshvan over all other Shabbats of blessing,
that Shabbat of blessing Cheshvan is the first Shabbat of blessing that Jews bless with the power of the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He,
consequently it has within it the superiority of a new thing etc.
3
ג
The question arises:
Also the other months are blessed by Jews
(with the power of the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He),
and by the Most High
(by whose power Jews bless all these months)
there is surely no difference between the first time and the second time and the third time and the rest of the times. So what is the innovation of the first time that Jews bless the month on Shabbat of blessing?
The answer to this is:
Regarding the Most High there is indeed no practical difference between the first time and the other times,
but the power to bless the months was afterwards given over to Jews
(that they should bless all the remaining months of the year after the month of Tishrei),
and by Jews there is explicitly a practical difference between the first time and the other times that come after it.
This is understood from that which one must attain to a command in the Torah and an assistance and giving of power and a service and effort that after the first time that the Torah was given "let it not be in your eyes like an old decree etc. but new",
and afterwards one must attain to a second statement of our sages, of blessed memory,
that it should be not only "as new" but "every day they shall be in your eyes as new",
and afterwards one must attain to an explanation –
that it should be "new" literally.
And in our matter –
that regarding all these months after the month of Cheshvan one must have a command and assistance and a special service and effort that the blessing of Israel should be in the manner of "as new",
until "new",
until "new" literally:
but regarding the first Shabbat of blessing
(Cheshvan)
one does not need for this any effort,
because this is "new" simply.
4
ד
One must still understand:
In the previous year Jews already blessed all these months,
consequently the service and effort was already then that for all months this should be in the manner of "as new",
"new" until "new" literally;
"חדשים" ביז "חדשים" ממש;
so after this,
what is already the innovation of the first Shabbat of blessing in this year?
The explanation in this is:
This applies that the service and effort of the previous year is sufficient –
regarding the light that was then revealed;
בנוגע צו דעם אור וואס איז דעמולט געווען;
but in this year when a "new light" descends,
and not just a new month,
rather a "new higher light that has not yet shone from the days of the world such a supernal light",
the service of the previous year does not suffice regarding the new light that exists in this year,
rather one must have for this a new service and effort in order to receive the new light of this year
(because "if I have not toiled and found, do not believe").
And by way of example, as this is regarding the service of repentance:
It must be "all his days in repentance". And since all Israel are presumed fit,
and especially that "and Your people are all righteous",
it is understood that a Jew certainly fulfills this and does repentance "all his days",
and a repentance not
(only)
for sins,
rather since he is presumed fit,
and Your people are all righteous,
this is a repentance of a righteous person
(like "the righteous in repentance").
And nevertheless,
after he has repented once, it is said that "all his days in repentance",
and there must be a more elevated repentance.
And not just a higher response,
but in a manner that is incomparable. Of course from the Sages' statement that when Israel do repentance then "they are immediately redeemed":
Just as the Surrounding Cause
(the redemption)
is a matter of redemption relative to the prior state,
i.e., a matter that is incomparable,
so too it is understood from this that the cause for this
(the matter of repentance)
must be incomparable to the prior repentance,
and to such an extent that it is incomparable –
that the repentance
(now)
should bring a redemption from the exile that all these levels of repentance until now could not bring!
And particularly according to the known that it is not with our will that we will go out of exile but by the will of the Holy One, blessed be He,
from which it is understood that not looking at the most elevated level in the will of the Holy One, blessed be He,
one must draw down
(through repentance)
a higher will
(which such a will was not until now)
that should be drawn down to the very lowest –
into exile and from there take out Jews,
and since this is drawn down to the very lowest, it is a proof that this is a will that comes from the very highest,
not just high high,
but very highest,
which shows that it is incomparable.
So too is it understood in our matter:
When in this year there comes a "new higher light that has never yet shone from the days of the world such a supernal light",
the work and toil of last year when this new light was not present is not sufficient,
rather one must have new work and toil so that "each day they should be in your eyes as new ones",
and then –
more toil so that it should be "new ones",
and more toil so that it should be literally "new ones";
און נאכמער יגיעה בכדי עס זאל זיין "חדשים" ממש;
however, regarding the first time that Jews bless the Shabbat Mevarchim in this year, one need not attain any toil that this should be in a manner of "new ones".
And even though he has a good memory and he remembers all the details and minutiae that he learned and experienced years ago in a manner of "as new ones" and "new ones" and literally "new ones",
and learned about this in the Torah of Truth,
which is the true truth –
the truth in its truth,
and he knows that it is the truth in its truth –
nevertheless, knowledge about this is not enough,
rather one must live with it,
and when a new year comes with a new light,
it is understood that when speaking about living with it,
the memory of last year is not sufficient,
rather one must live with it with new vitality etc.
And likewise how this is regarding the study of Torah:
The Alter Rebbe says that one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion. From which it is understood that when a new year comes when a new light is drawn down,
also in Torah,
it is not enough that one should remember what one learned in this portion last year,
rather in this year one must live with it with new vitality,
i.e., that it must be "its explanation is new".
From which is understood the superiority of this Shabbat Mevarchim over all other Shabbatot Mevarchim –
being the first Shabbat Mevarchim that Jews bless in this year,
it inherently possesses the quality of "new ones".
H
ה
Additionally, there are more qualities in this Shabbat:
This is the last Shabbat of the month of Tishrei,
which comes after the storm and all the elevations of this month,
until also the matter of "the time of our joy",
which was celebrated with great joy.
And particularly that it was celebrated in the four cubits of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the Nasi of our generation –
for holiness does not move from its place,
and since he served his service there for ten years,
this does not move from its place,
and also now these are his four cubits,
and all matters from there are his matters.
And this is so in every month of Tishrei. And in particular it begins from Rosh Hashanah,
but then all matters are in a manner of "in concealment",
afterwards come the days after this,
until one reaches "the time of our joy",
when all matters of Rosh Hashanah are revealed.
Afterwards comes Shemini Atzeret,
which then brings even more joy even regarding the joy of "Zman Simchateinu". Of course also from this that Shemini Atzeret is a "regel bifnei atzmo",
including also in this the matter of Birkat Shehecheyanu,
that Birkat Shehecheyanu is recited specifically on a new thing and a thing of joy
(as explained in Nigleh).
From this it is understood that on Shmini Atzeret a new joy comes regarding the joy of the days of Sukkot that preceded it,
Afterwards comes even more joy on Simchat Torah –
of course from the very name "Simchat Torah":
According to the custom of Israel, Torah is that which was accepted in all the dispersions of Israel
[therefore it has the force of a positive commandment and a negative commandment]
the day is called "Simchat Torah"
(as it is also stated in the Zohar).
And according to the known that the name by which it is called in the Holy Tongue constitutes and animates and expresses the content of the thing,
it is understood that the name "Simchat Torah" indicates that the day is connected with joy.
And this is an addition in Simchat Torah relative to Shemini Atzeret and relative to the festival of Sukkot in general and relative to all the festivals:
Although Shemini Atzeret is distinguished in the matter of joy from the festival of Sukkot –
but it is not stated explicitly in its name. The joy is revealed on this day,
but not in the name "Shemini Atzeret". Just as this is regarding the festival of Sukkot in general:
Although the festival of Sukkot is distinguished in the matter of joy from the other festivals
(therefore one then says "Zman Simchateinu",
not as on the festival of Pesach –
"Zman Cheiruteinu" or on the festival of Shavuot –
"Zman Matan Torateinu") –
but it is not stated explicitly in the name of the festival –
"Chag HaSukkot",
just as it is not stated explicitly in the names of the other festivals –
"Chag HaPesach" or "Chag HaMatzot",
"Chag HaShavuot".
However, on Simchat Torah the matter of joy is stated explicitly in the name –
"Simchat Torah". It is indeed stated that this is "Simchat Torah",
but it is understood that the main emphasis in this is on the matter of joy,
only in this itself comes the detail,
that this is not mere joy,
but "Simchat Torah",
with both interpretations in this
(in the talks of my father-in-law, the Rebbe),
that Torah rejoices in Israel and Israel rejoices in Torah,
and this is "Zman Simchateinu" in the plural –
the joy of Torah with Jews and the joy of Jews with Torah.
And since the matter of joy is stated explicitly in the name of the day,
which constitutes the day,
not as on Shmini Atzeret and Chag HaSukkot etc. –
it is understood,
that on Simchat Torah there is a greater joy than on Shmini Atzeret and on Chag HaSukkot,
as one also sees this in practice in the custom of Israel.
Afterwards comes Shabbat Bereishit,
which is always the Shabbat after Simchat Torah,
which indicates that they are connected in content:
Then the "Vayechulu" from the language of completion and delight in the days preceding this
(as above section 1),
including Simchat Torah.
That is, that notwithstanding the greatness of the joy on Simchat Torah,
as emphasized in its name,
there comes here an even higher level of completion in joy –
on Shabbat Bereishit which always comes after Simchat Torah.
Thus from this is understood the greatness of the elevation of this Shabbat –
by virtue of it coming after Simchat Torah.
And
ו
There is yet another virtue in this Shabbat –
being "Shabbat Bereishit":
The name "Shabbat Bereishit"
("Bereishit" and not "Batechilah"),
indicates that this Shabbat is the beginning of the entire year.
That is, that all these elevations of this Shabbat Bereishit as was discussed earlier
(being the Shabbat of blessing Cheshvan,
and the Shabbat after Simchat Torah),
and there is more to elaborate on this –
are drawn forth upon all the days of the year.
This
ז
The intention in all these virtues on this Shabbat,
is so that a Jew should live with it,
because our Torah is a Torah of life,
a directive in life.
That is, that it is not enough that he should know and learn about these matters in Torah,
and since it is a Torah of truth he knows that it is true and absolutely true,
but together with this that it is a Torah of truth it is a Torah of life,
that he must live with it in actual practice.
That is, it is not the simple meaning,
that first Torah is a Torah of truth,
and only afterwards,
a span of time after this,
does it become a Torah of life,
but together with this that it is a Torah of truth it is a Torah of life,
a directive in life.
What does it mean to live with it? Does it mean simply,
that this must permeate all his limbs so that each limb lives with it according to its nature:
In the head, living means –
that he understands it with his intellect;
אז ער פארשטייט עס אין שכל;
in the heart, living means –
that he feels it with the feeling of the heart,
love and fear,
including a fear and awe that nothing should be lacking in him regarding this, etc.;
כולל א יראה ופחד אז ביי אים זאל אין דעם גארניט פעלן וכיו"ב;
and in the most physical limbs,
the legs down to the heel of the foot,
living means –
that he goes in a dance with his legs! And this itself begins with a melody in the mouth;
אז ער גייט א ריקוד ברגלים! און דאס גופא הויבט זיך אן מיט א ניגון בפה;
and so too regarding the rest of his limbs –
each limb must live with the matters of this Shabbat according to the characteristics of that limb.
Ch
ח
And since one gives a Jew all these aforementioned matters on this Shabbat
(with additional levels that could be elaborated upon),
all these special powers so that he can fulfill the matters and in a manner that he lives with them with all the limbs of his body –
it is therefore understandable the greatness of the responsibility and the necessity that he should utilize them in actuality,
because "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create a single thing for naught",
consequently, when one gives a Jew special powers and he, heaven forbid, does not utilize them,
this is not merely a deficiency regarding himself alone,
but this causes a confusion in the entire order of the chain of descent!
And if he utilizes only a part of the powers that are given to him,
a confusion is caused from the side of the part of the powers that he does not utilize. And particularly since, for the most part, the powers that are not utilized are –
the most innermost matters. As is simply seen
(also among non-Jews):
A person has within himself externality and internality. And the most difficult thing that demands the greatest effort is to reveal his internality.
Therefore, one must know the greatness of the responsibility that one has to utilize to the fullest extent the special powers that were given to a Jew on this Shabbat.
On the other hand, one must know,
that when a Jew already makes a resolution in a matter,
the ruling in the Shulchan Aruch is,
that through this he is already
(at the time of the resolution)
victorious in the war against the evil inclination,
the matter of laziness and the like.
Afterwards, however, one can come with a claim,
that this remained by him only in resolution but not brought down into actuality –
therefore, one demonstrates with a living example that one brings it down into actuality,
and this goes through all the limbs,
from the head to the foot and everything in between,
and simply –
through that which one goes in an actual dance and beyond compare!
His Holy Honor, the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, stood to his full height and began to sing the melody of the Hakafot of his father, of blessed memory, and danced in his place.

ט
The above is the common element in the Shabbat of blessing of Cheshvan in every single year;
האמור לעיל איז דער דבר המשותף אין שבת מברכים חשון בכל שנה ושנה;
in addition, there is the specific determination of the Shabbat of blessing of Cheshvan which changes from year to year:
It is always the Shabbat after Simchat Torah,
but there can be a change in the day of the month on which it falls,
and according to this there is a difference in which day of the week Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan occurs.
This year, the Shabbat of blessing of Cheshvan falls on the 27th of Tishrei. And in this determination, Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan is on Tuesday and Wednesday.
This determination is also connected with the determination of the days of the week of Simchat Torah:
The first day of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan is always on the same day as Simchat Torah. And in this year:
Since Simchat Torah was on Tuesday of the week,
Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan falls on Tuesday and on Wednesday.
And this is also connected with the determination of Rosh Hashanah:
It is known the rule, that
(the first day)
Rosh Chodesh is always one day later in the week than the day of the week of the previous Rosh Chodesh.
That is, in our matter:
If Rosh Hashanah was on Monday and Tuesday of the week,
then Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan begins one day later in the week –
on Tuesday,
and the second day of Rosh Chodesh is on Wednesday.
And since all these determinations are dependent one upon the other,
and one determination necessitates the other,
one must say that there is between them a connection also in the content of the matters:
A connection between that which Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan is on Tuesday and Wednesday with Simchat Torah on Tuesday,
and a connection between these two matters
(Simchat Torah on Tuesday and Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan on Tuesday and Wednesday)
with that which Rosh Hashanah is on Monday and Tuesday.
And from this one must derive a lesson in the service of G-d,
all the more so from the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that all worldly matters are under Divine Providence, and therefore one must derive a lesson in the service of G-d from every thing in the world that one sees or hears,
all the more so when it concerns the fixing of the months,
a matter of a Jewish custom which is Torah.
And furthermore –
the fixing of the months is a matter connected with Torah,
to the extent that the sanctification of the month
("This month is for you"),
upon which the fixing of the months depends,
is actually the first commandment given to the Jews upon leaving Egypt, even before the Giving of the Torah.
And in this commandment is expressed the superiority of the Jews regarding Torah,
as is known, that this commandment was given specifically to the earthly court,
and even if they are willful sinners,
and all the more so if they are unintentional sinners –
one follows their ruling,
and upon this depends when one offers sacrifices etc.
So if one must derive a lesson in the service of G-d from every thing in the world,
all the more so must one derive it from a matter connected with Torah and commandments.
There are others who mistakenly wish to learn that it is exactly the opposite,
that in the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov it speaks only about mundane matters,
not about Torah and commandments –
because:
It is understandable that when one sees or hears about a mundane matter,
it is understandable why one must come to the Baal Shem Tov,
that one must derive from it a lesson in service;
אז מ'דארף דערפון ארויסנעמען א הוראה בעבודה;
but when he hears about a matter of Torah and commandments –
it is surely understood why it was shown to him,
so that he should know what he must fulfill in practice,
and there is no need to come to the point that one must derive from it a lesson in the service of G-d!
This, however, is contrary to reason:
One cannot say that from mundane matters one must learn a lesson also for the future,
while in Torah, which is from the term "lesson," such an essential matter should be lacking,
to say that it applies only at the time he fulfills the commandment,
but from it there is no lesson for the future! Rather, one must say that in addition to what he must fulfill in Torah and commandments in practice,
he must also learn from it a lesson for the future.
In addition to the explicit verse that Scripture stated –
"And the L-rd commanded us to do all these statutes
(so that it should be)
to fear the L-rd."
That is, the statute that he fulfills must add to him fear of G-d,
and after he has already fulfilled statutes,
when he fulfills another statute, it must add more fear relative to what he had until then.
Therefore, one must derive a lesson in the service of G-d from the fixing of the month of Cheshvan in this year,
as this is connected with the fixing of Simchas Torah and Rosh Hashanah.
G-d
י
And the explanation of this –
in a possible manner:
In the farbrengen that preceded this, the matter was explained regarding Rosh Hashanah falling on the second and third days,
and its connection to the fact that Simchas Torah now falls on the third day:
The second day indicates the matter of gevuros (might/severities),
and the third day indicates the matter of peace. And here both matters
(second and third days)
are together in one "long day" –
the matter of sweetening the gevuros.
Why must one come to gevuros at all and then sweeten the gevuros?! –
Let there be no gevuros from the outset! This is understood according to what is explained in the Siddur,
that specifically through the sweetening of the gevuros of Yitzchak there is an increase of vitality,
a multitude of blessings and the most elevated blessings
(the blessings of Yitzchak),
which are higher than all other blessings.
And the matter of the multitude of blessings
(increase of vitality)
through the sweetening of the gevuros
(second and third days)
on Rosh Hashanah is then revealed on Simchas Torah,
which falls on the third day
(when Rosh Hashanah falls on the second and third days):
On Simchat Torah, one reads from two portions of the Torah –
Parshat Berachah and Parshat Bereishit. From this it is understood,
that during Simchat Torah, which occurs on the third day, on which "it was good" was doubled,
it turns out that one has doubled two matters of "it was good" was doubled –
an abundance of good and blessing
(in a manner of reinforcement of vitality):
the third day on which "it was good" was doubled from Parshat Berachah and the third day on which "it was good" was doubled from Parshat Bereishit. And the content of the matter:
one has doubled "it was good" was doubled from the matter of blessing and drawing down,
and "it was good" was doubled in the matters of the world,
heaven and earth of all the seven days of creation,
which are all included in Parshat Bereishit.
And in more detail:
"Berachah" is connected with heaven,
and "Bereishit"
(the creation of the world)
is connected with earth. One has "it was good" was doubled from the matters of heaven
(blessing),
spirituality,
and this is drawn down "until the last sea" and "until the last day",
in place and time
(which is the difference between "last sea" and "last day"),
and "it was good" was doubled from the matters of the earth
(Bereishit),
materiality. In addition to this, the essential matter of "it was good" was doubled means good for heaven and good for creatures,
which heaven and creatures are analogous to the matter of "heaven" and "earth".
And the two matters in "it was good" was doubled
(from Berachah and from Bereishit)
come together:
the "it was good" was doubled of "Berachah" adds blessing and drawing down into the "it was good" was doubled of "Bereishit".
That is to say:
the world in its own right
("In the beginning, G-d created")
was created in a manner of "the world was created in its fullness",
"These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created",
"generations" is written in full. And in addition, it is stated on the third day in a manner of "it was good" was doubled. Into this comes an addition of blessing and perfection from the matter of Parshat Berachah,
and particularly when one has the "it was good" was doubled of Berachah –
which causes that in "In the beginning, G-d created"
(in the world)
there should be drawn down an even higher perfection than "was created in its fullness" –
the perfection of "These are the generations of Peretz",
"generations" is written in full,
which the full "generations" is higher than the full "generations" of "These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created".
It turns out that on Simchat Torah, on the third day, there is an abundance of blessing –
which is the revelation of this abundance of blessings
(in a manner of reinforcement of vitality)
that are drawn down through the sweetening of the severities
(the second and third)
on Rosh Hashanah.
Yes
יא
After Simchat Torah comes the Shabbat of blessing the new month of Cheshvan,
when then the "Vayechulu" from the term of perfection and delight in all the matters of Simchat Torah,
the abundance of blessings that are then there in a manner of the third on which "it was good" was doubled;
די ריבוי ברכות וואס זיינען דעמולט דא באופן פון שלישי שהוכפל בו כי טוב;
and with this power one then blesses the new month of Cheshvan,
"on the third day and on the fourth day"
(as one says in the blessing of the month):
The matter of the third and fourth is explicitly stated in the revealed –
in Tractate Shabbat
[the tractate of the present day –
Shabbat):
"Gimel Dalet –
bestow kindness to the poor". Dalet refers to the poor,
and Gimel refers to "bestow kindness",
which is "bestow kindness to the poor".
That is to say,
that one has here both matters,
Gimel and Dalet
("bestow kindness" and "poor"),
one does not make the "poor" cease being "poor",
they remain "poor",
and together with this there is the "bestow kindness to the poor". And the reason for this –
because there is in this what is not in that,
both the "bestow kindness" (Gimel)
and the "poor" (Dalet)
have an advantage that they influence the other:
the "bestow kindness" in its simple sense influences the poor,
and likewise the poor influences the bestower of kindness,
and on the contrary –
"more than the householder does for the poor, the poor does for the householder".
Yes
יב
So it is also in the general order of the chain of descent:
First, one created three worlds
(Atzilut, Beriyah, Yetzirah),
and only afterwards was added with an "af" that interrupts –
"I made it",
the fourth world,
the world of Asiyah.
That the fourth world
(Asiyah)
is in the category of "poor",
it does not have the revelations that the three upper worlds have. But on the other hand –
"the ultimate purpose of the chain of descent of the worlds etc. is not for the upper worlds, because for them there is a descent from the light of His countenance, blessed be He",
the three worlds descend specifically into the world of Asiyah,
because "the ultimate purpose is this lowly world",
and after this descent, the ascent begins specifically from the world of Asiyah and an ascent also in the three worlds,
until an ascent that is beyond measure.
This means:
All the upper worlds,
even the World of Atzilut,
which is from the term "Etzlo" (near Him) and close,
and even the worlds above that,
the worlds of the Ein Sof (the Infinite) –
are a "descent from the light of His countenance, may He be blessed"
[and although the Alter Rebbe does not write there that this also speaks about the worlds above Atzilut,
but from the explanation of the content of the matter it is understood thus. And especially according to the interpretation that Atzilut also means the Atzilut of the totality,
which also includes the worlds of the Ein Sof);
וואס דאס איז כולל אויך די עולמות הא"ס);
and after the descent of all the worlds down to the World of Asiyah,
the ascent begins specifically in the World of Asiyah,
because there one makes a dwelling place for Him, may He be blessed, in the lower realms,
a permanent dwelling place,
which is an ascent even relative to Atzilut, which is in the aspect of "Etzlo" (near Him) and close, etc.
That is, that the poor person
(the World of the Holy,
the World of Asiyah)
does with the householder
(the three worlds)
more than what the householder does with the poor person,
because the World of Asiyah brings about an ascent in the three worlds that they would not have had were it not for their descent into the World of Asiyah.

The connection of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan with Gimel and Dalet
("Gomel Dalim" – "He Who bestows good upon the poor") –
the determination of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan in this year:
After all these ascents and abundant flow and great bounty in the month of Tishrei –
then in the month of Cheshvan begins the service of "Gomel Dalim." To descend into the world and there to accomplish and make a dwelling place for Him, may He be blessed, in the lower realms,
as follows.
And in particular:
After there was the matter of the sweetening of the harsh judgments
(Bet and Gimel)
on Rosh Hashanah and the revelation thereof in an abundance of blessings and great bounty on Shemini Atzeret in a manner of "it was doubled, for it is good"
(both in "Bereishit" and in "Bereishit")
being the third day of the week –
it is then drawn into the conclusion and the last day of the entire month of Tishrei
(which includes all the blessings and flows and great bounty of the month of Tishrei),
which is the first day of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan,
which is also the third day of the week, on which "it was doubled, for it is good";
וואס איז אויך יום ג' בשבוע שהוכפל בו כי טוב;
and this is "Gomel" (bestows) and draws down the power
(of the month of Tishrei)
into the service in the manner of "Dalim" (the poor) in the month of Cheshvan,
service in the world to make for Him, may He be blessed, a dwelling place in the lower realms,
beginning from the first day of the month of Cheshvan
(the second day of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, from which one begins to count the days of the month of Cheshvan),
which is on the seventh day, the beginning of the word "Dalim";
וואס ער איז ביום ז' ר"ת "דלים";
and specifically through this descent there is an ascent beyond measure also in the Gimel,
as above.
And this is the matter of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan being on the third and fourth days,
"Gomel Dalim,"
until they become one matter,
not exactly like Bet and Gimel in the extended day of Rosh Hashanah,
but on the other hand –
also regarding the two days of Rosh Chodesh, one says in the blessing of the month "that comes upon us for good." Not "that come" in the plural form
(as it is fitting to say for two days)
but "that comes" in the singular form,
because both days are one matter –
Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan.
And the matter of "Gomel Dalim,"
that the Gimel
("Gomel")
bestows into the Dalet
("Dalim")
and that the Dalet
("Dalim")
bestows into the Gimel
("Gomel") –
must be in a manner of the sweetening of the harsh judgments
(Bet and Gimel).

יד
And the explanation of the matter:
After one has received a great bounty in the month of Tishrei,
which "Tishrei" is the letters of "Reishit" (beginning) and is abundant in festivals,
which is a level beyond measure higher than the descent in the World of the Holy
(Asiyah),
and in particular,
beginning from Rosh Hashanah when there was "make Me king over you,"
and then the Ten Days of Repentance,
and Yom Kippur,
and the four days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot which correspond to the four letters of the Name Havayah above,
and then all the matters come out in revelation in "the time of our rejoicing,"
until Hoshana Rabbah and Shemini Atzeret,
and then the "Vayechulu" and its completion on Shabbat Bereishit
(the Shabbat after Hoshana Rabbah and Shemini Atzeret),
and the Shabbat blesses the month of Cheshvan –
is that after all this, at the beginning of the month of Cheshvan, begins the service of "and Jacob went on his way,"
when then one must
(in the language of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe)
"unpack the packages" and the great bounty that one has received and "bought" at the "fair" during the month of Tishrei, and it has become his possession,
but then, beginning from the month of Cheshvan, one must unpack them. And simply –
that one must draw them down into the world,
into the service that each one does in his place to make a dwelling place for Him, may He be blessed, in the lower realms.
That is, after the month of Tishrei, the work of "Gomel Dalim" begins in the month of Cheshvan,
that is, descending into the world of Asiyah,
the world of Dalet
(the poor),
and there to bestow, influence, and draw down the abundant flow that was received during the month of Tishrei.
Sometimes it is stated that the work of "And Yaakov went on his way" begins already in the month of Tishrei,
until, as the Rebbe Maharash writes in the Hemshech "VeKacha," that this begins at the conclusion of Yom Kippur.
For then
(the examinations)
there is also the descent of "And Yaakov went on his way":
After this, when on Yom Kippur one was like the angels and one fasted, etc.,
they say to Jews, "Go, eat your bread with joy,"
and as was seen in the conduct of our Nesi'im, that they then endeavored to eat a physical meal,
and not to fulfill their obligation with eating mezonot and the like,
with which, according to some opinions, one can fulfill the obligation of the third Shabbat meal,
rather, they washed for a meal,
"And you shall eat and be satisfied and bless,"
with all the storminess involved. And all this,
notwithstanding that this could sometimes affect physical health,
nevertheless, it did not affect the eating of this meal.
But "And Yaakov went on his way" at the conclusion of Yom Kippur is within holiness itself,
and then the ultimate purpose of the descent in this is not yet present,
because after the conclusion of Yom Kippur come the four days between Yom Kippur and Sukkot, during which a concept of opposition is not applicable,
Jews are then occupied with mitzvot,
"This one is occupied with his sukkah and this one is occupied with his lulav."
And certainly, afterwards comes the festival of Sukkot,
during which one sits in a sukkah, which is analogous to the sukkah made from the skin of the Leviathan,
to which is analogous the concept of the Sechach, which shelters and protects over him. In addition to the general concept that one is then still in the month of Tishrei, the letters of which spell "Reishit" (beginning),
consequently, it is not possible to say that then is "And Yaakov went on his way,"
because it is not yet literally "his way."
However, when the festivals of the month of Tishrei and the entire month of Tishrei conclude
(Reishit),
begins
(on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan)
the true concept of "And Yaakov went on his way,"
that each one goes on his way into the world,
and this is "And Yaakov went on his way,"
as the Yud is drawn into "Ekev"
(not as in the month of Tishrei, whose concept is "Reishit,"
head),
that is, that one then descends into the aspect of "Dalim" (the poor).
Thus,
טו
and then the work of "Gomel Dalim" consists of
drawing down and influencing the abundant flow from the month of Tishrei into the work of making a dwelling place for Him in the lower realms during the month of Cheshvan.
And through this, there is an incomparably greater ascent also regarding the state in the month of Tishrei,
because the poor person does more for the householder than the householder does for the poor person.
And simply:
When a Jew goes out into the world
(beginning from Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan)
he finds there a world that is in the aspect of "Dal" (poor),
because the place in the world has not yet been refined to perfection.
And similarly regarding the people of the place,
he finds there people who are in the aspect of "Dal,"
poor physically or poor spiritually,
there is no poor person except in knowledge.
His work then consists of being "Gomel Dalim,"
that one should refine the place,
and bestow and influence upon the people one encounters who are poor
(physically or spiritually).
And even though Jews throughout all the generations have refined the world, etc.,
nevertheless, the very fact that he came to this place and found this "Dal" has in it a purpose,
for "Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create a single thing in vain,"
and "Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He created only for His glory,"
that this poor person needs to come to him and he needs to come to the poor person.
That is, the very fact that he came through Divine Providence to this place of this poor person,
is a proof that notwithstanding that Jews in previous generations have refined the place,
there is still a refinement that he needs to accomplish there,
and this pertains to the place and pertains to himself,
because the poor person does more for the householder than the householder does for the poor person.
As the concept is simply in the mitzvah of charity:
When one encounters a poor person,
even if others have given him charity,
nevertheless, the very fact that he encounters him and that person is still a poor person,
is a proof that he needs to give him charity.
And this is the service that begins primarily from Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan,
when there comes the "And Yaakov went on his way" –
the service of "bestowing upon the poor,"
through the fact that there is the "hand that distributes charity"
(in the language of the Tanya),
the service with his hands,
and in the hands themselves –
the work of the hands,
which indicates the service in physical action
(the world of the,
"poor").
And as it is stated regarding the Most High "for the work of your hands You will yearn,"
not "for the intellect of your hands" and the like,
but specifically "for the work of your hands,"
and specifically for this "You will yearn." And just as this is with the Most High, so too must it be with the person below,
who is "a likeness of the Supernal,"
that the ultimate intention is,
that with him there should be "for the work of your hands":
There can be a service with the hands that is connected to the spirituality of the hand. One is told,
that there must be a service with the physicality of the hand.
In this itself, however, there can also be levels:
He can lay tefillin on the hand
(for "the entire Torah is compared to tefillin").
This is indeed connected with the physicality of the hand,
but this is not "the work of your hands." Afterwards, there is the service of "the work of your hands,"
for example –
through the fact that the hand becomes a "hand that distributes charity,"
wherein the emphasis is specifically on "the work of your hands,"
the actual making and giving of charity:
In the description "hand that distributes charity," it does not speak of how the hand is connected with intellect,
and it is not relevant how he earned the money,
in this, only that one already has the money and the "poor person" is emphasized,
and now only "hand that distributes charity" needs to be.
And in this itself, the emphasis is –
"that distributes charity,"
not "that gives charity,"
from which two things are understood:
A) He does not give the charity in a manner of giving,
in a manner of a gift,
for then, if the recipient did not give him pleasure, he would not have given him a gift,
i.e., that then the feeling of the giver is also relevant. And this depends on whether the recipient gives him pleasure;
ד.ה. אז דערביי איז נוגע אויך דער הרגש הנותן. און דאס איז תלוי צי דער מקבל עביד נייחא לנפשי';
Rather, he gives it in a manner of "distributes,"
in a manner of charity,
so that only the recipient is relevant.
B) "Gives charity" means that he gives it away,
but it is not emphasized that he gives it away according to the level of the recipient:
However, "distributes" emphasizes that he distributes the charity in such a way that the recipient can receive it,
i.e., not in a manner of an abundance of good that he cannot receive,
but it is measured according to the vessel of the recipient.
And so too regarding charity to a "poor person" in spirituality,
there is no poor person except in knowledge –
he influences upon him Judaism according to his worth and according to his standing and situation, so that he can receive it,
and not an abundance of good that then he might depart from fear of Heaven and from G-dliness, etc.
And specifically through the descent of "bestowing upon the poor,"
there comes the most sublime ascent,
the poor person does more for the master of the house than the master of the house does for the poor person.

So too is the lesson regarding the service of "bestowing upon the poor" in the month of Cheshvan
(for Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan is on the third and fourth days):
Also from the aspect of the drawing down from above
(from the Most High to the world)
one sees that in the month of Cheshvan the order of the drawing down begins in a manner of "bestowing upon the poor":
In the month of Cheshvan the season of rains begins. And this is also hinted at in the name of the month –
"Mar-Cheshvan":
"Mar" is from the term drop,
like the language of the verse "a drop from a bucket,"
which means –
a drop of rains.
The prayer and request for rain is on Shemini Atzeret,
in the month of Tishrei,
but the actual descent begins in the month of Cheshvan. In the time of the Temple,
when Jews would make the pilgrimage,
the rains would begin after the first week of Cheshvan so that all Jews could return, each man under his vine and under his fig tree;
האבן זיך אנגעהויבן די גשמים נאך דער ערשטער וואך אין חשון בכדי אלע אידן זאלן זיך קענען אומקערן איש תחת 100 גפנו ותחת תאנתו 101;
but after the destruction and after we were exiled from our land, when this reason is absent, it is understood that the descent of rain is connected with the beginning of the month of Cheshvan.
For the descent of rain is a matter of "bestowing upon the poor":
One draws down and influences to the poor below rains of blessing,
which then "gives birth and causes to grow and gives seed to the sower and bread to the eater."
And the continuation is in a manner that it is drawn down according to the vessel of the recipients –
not an abundance of good that they cannot receive,
but rather "drop by drop"
("like drawing water from a well"),
but not in a manner that this is less than what is needed
(like the story in the Gemara),
but rather it is in the manner of "a mass of water",
so that one has from it the entire completeness of the action,
until it brings about "and it gave birth and caused growth".
Yud Zayin
יז
And may it be His will that there be fulfilled that which is stated in Yalkut Shimoni that "in MarCheshvan the Holy One, blessed be He, will repay him" for that which then the building of the First Beis HaMikdash was completed and it was not inaugurated until the month of Tishrei of the following year.
And furthermore –
the Beis HaMikdash should already be rebuilt now at the end of the month of Tishrei,
so that then the Chanukas HaBayis will extend into the month of Cheshvan,
because the Chanukas HaBayis will last for several days,
like the Chanukas HaBayis of the First Temple was for fourteen days*,
and even if the Chanukas HaBayis of the Third Beis HaMikdash will be for seven days, this will also extend into the month of Cheshvan,
because from now until the beginning of the month of Cheshvan is less than seven days,
consequently the conclusion of the Chanukah will be in the month of Cheshvan –
and everything follows the conclusion.
And the main thing is the actual deed –
that we should have the Beis HaMikdash in actuality, literally, below ten handbreadths,
for in the Beis HaMikdash the main thing is the actual, literal,
in the literal physical world of action,
speedily in our days, literally,
in the lowest level, beneath which there is no lower level,
and also as one is accustomed to say in the language of the Targum,
the language of the common people –
"speedily in our days".
And the preparation for this is through our deeds and our service now, by which one transforms the materiality of the world so that it should be physicality,
at least not lower than that,
and from physicality one makes it a vessel for G-dliness
(which is the unique service of the month of Cheshvan,
as mentioned above).
And through this one hastens even more towards the true and complete redemption,
that it should come immediately and instantly, literally,
and we will all go to the Holy Land,
to the Holy City,
to the Holy Mountain,
to the Beis HaMikdash,
"the Sanctuary of the L-rd, Your hands established",
to the Holy of Holies,
and literally as it is.
Yud Ches
יח
Earlier we mentioned that which was discussed at length in the farbrengen of Simchas Torah,
that on Simchas Torah of this year there are two times the third day upon which "it is good" was doubled,
the third day upon which "it is good" was doubled from Parshas Berechah,
because then one reads the entire Parshas Berechah,
and the third day upon which "it is good" was doubled from Parshas Bereishis,
because this is the third day of Parshas Bereishis.
And in continuation of this there was the suggestion –
more than a suggestion, not a final ruling,
like all matters that are discussed here –
that on Simchas Torah one should complete the learning in the Chitas study sessions the Chumash study from the third until the end of Berechah and afterwards from the beginning until the third of Parshas Bereishis.
Regarding this, a question was asked –
that this does not accord with the instruction of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding the Chitas study sessions,
that on Simchas Torah one should complete Parshas Berechah,
from the daily portion where one is holding
(in this year –
from the third)
until the end of Parshas Berechah;
ביז סוף פרשה ברכה;
and Parshas Bereishis one should begin to learn only on Isru Chag,
that is, in this year –
on the fourth day one should learn from the beginning of the portion until the fourth. And this does not accord with the aforementioned suggestion that on Simchas Torah one should also learn in Parshas Bereishis
(from the beginning of the portion until the third)?!
In truth, then two separate matters were discussed:
One matter is that in this year we have the concept of "it is good" was doubled both in Berechah and in Bereishis. And this does not compel that on Simchas Torah one must learn both from the third of Parshas Berechah and until the third of Parshas Bereishis;
איין ענין אז בשנה זו האט מען דעם ענין פון הוכפל בו כי טוב סיי אין ברכה און סיי אין בראשית. און דאס איז ניט מכריח אז בשמח"ת דארף מען לערנען סיי פון שלישי פון פ' ברכה סיי ביז שלישי פון פ' בראשית;
But along with this, it was also explicitly mentioned that it was suggested that on Simchas Torah one should learn the Chitas study sessions from the third of Parshas Berechah until the third of Parshas Bereishis –
how does this accord with the instruction of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe?
Yud Tes
יט
And one can say the explanation of this by prefacing a question on the aforementioned instruction of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe:
It is known the teaching of the old Rebbe that one must live with the time,
and as it was later interpreted,
that this means living with the weekly portion,
and in the portion itself –
with the daily Chumash study
(on the first day from the beginning of the portion until the second, etc.).
What is understood from this regarding the day of Simchat Torah in this year
(on Tuesday of the week) –
that then one must live with the third of Parshat Berachah and with the third of Parshat Bereishit
(as discussed in the farbrengen before this).
The question arises on the instruction of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that one should begin learning Parshat Bereishit on Isru Chag:
How can it be that one should postpone a Torah from the old Rebbe and postpone the "living with the time" of Tuesday
(Simchat Torah)
to a day after this when one will learn the entire portion
(including the third)
until Thursday:
Today one must live with the time,
with today's Chumash lesson of this very time –
so how can one postpone it to a day?!
And the question is even stronger regarding a simple person like "your heads, your tribes":
For one who is immersed in in-depth study of a subject in Nigleh,
in Chassidus,
in communal work and the like –
there is no question how one can postpone living with the time with a Chumash lesson of the time,
because in Chumash he does not see any depth in which he needs to delve –
so who cares,
if one will postpone the study until tomorrow,
Isru Chag? Meanwhile he can use his mind to study a subject with depth and profundity, etc.
[And so it must be,
that one who is connected to in-depth study,
should not leave this unused,
rather he must utilize it]!
As we see in practice –
one does not go into whether it is a straight thing or a crooked thing –
that most books of in-depth study, etc., are not on the Written Torah
(and even the books that are on the Written Torah –
this is primarily on the level of allusion and secret, etc.),
and even not on Mishnah,
rather on Gemara,
until on Acharonim,
and how good –
the later Acharonim!
However, regarding a simple person,
who is not connected to in-depth study,
and his main occupation is with the physicality of the world –
for him it is the greatest wonder that one should postpone a Torah from the old Rebbe that one must live with the time because of another matter!
Thus
כ
The explanation of this is:
Since on Simchat Torah "the mitzvah of the day is in joy",
and most Jews then utilized every moment of Simchat Torah to be in joy,
and the Torah speaks of the majority –
His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, did not want to institute that one should then also need to study the lessons of Parshat Bereishit and thereby take away from the time that one can fulfill the mitzvah of the day in joy. Regarding Parshat Berachah there was no choice,
there is no time to postpone it,
but Parshat Bereishit can be postponed until tomorrow,
therefore the mitzvah of the day in joy of Simchat Torah overrode the Torah of the Alter Rebbe regarding living with the time with Parshat Bereishit.
In what context is this said?
When one utilizes all possible moments of Simchat Torah to fulfill the mitzvah of joy;
ווען מ'נוצט אויס אלע מעגלעכע רגעים פון שמח"ת אויף מקיים זיין מצות שמחה;
but now it was seen that on Simchat Torah there are Jews,
at least a minyan of Jews,
who did not utilize every possible moment to stand in joy –
as was simply noticeable on their faces –
therefore it was resolved that now there is no reason
(which existed in the time of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe)
to override the Torah of the Alter Rebbe regarding living with the time because of the mitzvah of the day in joy,
since one is anyway not utilizing every moment of the day for joy. Therefore it was then proposed: Since one is anyway nullifying from the matter of joy,
let one better fill the time
(not, Heaven forbid, the time when one stands in joy,
rather the remaining time)
with the study of Torah,
and live with the time,
with the Chumash lesson of Parshat Bereishit!
And this is as explained in Tanya regarding one for whom his Torah study is not his occupation, that he "interrupts and nullifies anyway, etc."
Consequently,
what is all the noise about, that because of at least ten Jews it was announced at the farbrengen that in the remaining time one should learn the daily portion of Chumash?!
And especially since it is no more than a suggestion,
and it is not necessarily that one should accept it,
consequently, what is there to lose by proposing the suggestion. If one would speak at the farbrengens only about those matters that one is certain will be obeyed –
the farbrengen would last much less time,
and one could go home and have Oneg Shabbat also in physical matters and sleep peacefully,
rather than sitting at the farbrengen where one pushes him etc.!
Kaf-Alef
כא
In addition, I have further reinforcement for this from a story that happened years ago:
I entered to my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to propose that a new Chassidus pamphlet be printed for Simchat Torah. He looked at me, smiled, and said:
Who, then, will learn a new pamphlet on Simchat Torah?!
And he said this even though it is a new pamphlet with a maamar connected to Simchat Torah.
As far as I remember, this was one of the matters that I did not obey,
and as is my way in such matters, I printed the pamphlet for Simchat Torah,
and there were indeed several who learned it,
at least a part of it. And in practice, my father-in-law was pleased with it.
And the explanation for this is,
that with a Nasi, there can sometimes be a ratzon retzonot regarding the state of the recipients according to his own state and level,
but it can be that the recipients stand on a lower level,
and yet one wants that there should specifically be an arousal from below from the recipients and that this should bring about the matter.
As it was in this matter,
that the ratzon retzonot of the Nasi was according to his level,
and according to that level, it worked out for him that on Simchat Torah one utilizes every moment for joy,
consequently,
who would then learn a new pamphlet? But with this, one must come to an arousal from below,
because not all the recipients actually stood at such a level at that time,
and they indeed had time to learn the pamphlet,
as was seen in practice.
And similarly, as one finds it with the first Nasi –
Moshe Rabbeinu:
When the Jews came to Moshe to request meat,
Moshe argued "From where do I have meat,"
because according to his own level, there is no place for meat. And this was not speaking about meat for Moshe Rabbeinu,
but rather meat for the people of Israel –
nevertheless, since from the perspective of his own level Moshe stood above this,
he said "From where do I have meat." But since according to the level of the recipients they indeed had a connection to this,
therefore their request was fulfilled,
and the drawing down of meat to them was through Moshe Rabbeinu himself
(because all the needs of the people are drawn down through the Nasi),
but as above,
that with this, one must come to an arousal from below in order to bring this about in the Nasi.
Kaf-Beit
כב
Every matter one wants to connect with the Redemption –
one finds similarly to the above in a story with the Tzemach Tzedek and the Rebbe Maharash regarding the matter of the Redemption:
The Rebbe Maharash once entered to his father,
the Tzemach Tzedek,
and asked him where is the fulfillment of the end of that year
(5608).
The Tzemach Tzedek answered him,
that the Likkutei Torah had been printed. The Rebbe Maharash said:
But we want Moshiach in its simple sense!
In this, one sees the same matter:
The Nasi spoke according to his own level,
and with this, the Tzemach Tzedek wanted that there should specifically be an arousal from below according to the level of the lower one,
and that specifically this should open up the matter.
Why is this told to us –
in order to teach everyone,
that for this one does not need that specifically a Nasi in potential
(the Rebbe Maharash)
should bring this about in a Nasi in actuality
(the Tzemach Tzedek),
but rather everyone,
even a most simple person,
can and must make the arousal from below that should open up a matter above.
One raises the "famous question":
Where is it written in Nigleh?
This is simply in the matter of prayer:
It is a positive commandment from the Torah that when a Jew has needs regarding children, life, and sustenance etc., he should pray verbally and request this from the Almighty.
And seemingly:
Above, everything is revealed and known,
all the more so the needs that every Jew must have,
all the more so of a simple person who has simple and complete faith in the Almighty,
and his simplicity is connected with the simplicity of the Essence –
then why must one come to the point that he should express this in speech in prayer?!
Rather, the explanation in this is,
that one wants the arousal from below specifically from below,
and specifically in speech. And although the essence of prayer is in the heart,
this too must descend into speech,
and specifically this elicits the drawing down from above.
And this is the entire concept of prayer,
that all the needs that a Jew has,
including the most essential matters,
which are the main requests of the silent prayer,
he must call them forth from above through his speech.
For example
כג
And likewise this is also regarding what was discussed above,
that the leader of our generation spoke according to his level that on Simchat Torah one will not study this pamphlet. And with this there needed to be the arousal from below etc.
From this there is a reinforcement on the aforementioned matter,
that although the leader of our generation said that one should begin studying Parshat Bereishit on the day after the holiday,
it was proposed that one should study it on Simchat Torah –
because one sees from this that the leader of our generation says that who will study a pamphlet on Simchat Torah because the mitzvah of the day is rejoicing and there is no time left for studying;
ווייל מ'זעט עס דערפון וואס נשיא דורנו זאגט אז ווער וועט לערנען א קונטרס בשמח"ת ווייל מצות היום בשמחה און עס בלייבט ניט איבער קיין צייט אויף לערנען;
but when one sees that in practice there are at least several Jews who in any case do not use every moment for rejoicing,
then why should one not use the moments when one is not fulfilling the rejoicing to the fullest with the time and study the lesson in Parshat Bereishit in speech
(in the manner and similar to the aforementioned that one waits for the arousal from below of a Jew in speech)?
Therefore it was proposed that on Simchat Torah one should study the lessons.
Since there are still those –
at least one –
who have not yet studied the lessons of Parshat Bereishit,
one should complete them on Shabbat Bereishit after the farbrengen,
and I do not care during the farbrengen if this will interfere with sleeping...
Likewise
כד
May it be His will that through this proper speech of Jews,
which they express openly –
the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, will be revealed throughout the world,
"And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see that the mouth of the Lord has spoken,"
and although this pertains to the Almighty,
a Jew becomes a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the act of creation
(as it states in the Gemara regarding one who says "Vayechulu" on the Sabbath day),
consequently he becomes a partner also in this matter of the revelation of the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, in the act of creation,
that through the fact that the speech of man is proper, it becomes a vessel for "And the glory... shall be revealed, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken."
And simply:
When Jews cry out in speech "We want Mashiach now,"
and the Almighty certainly wants this –
then "who is preventing"?! –
"The leaven in the dough" –
but on the Sabbath day all opponents etc. are nullified
(as we say in "Kegavna"),
consequently one can then effect that there should be "Mashiach now"!
And with the clouds of heaven to the Holy Land,
and there specifically in the Holy Temple,
and immediately and instantly,
so that on Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan one will offer the sacrifices of Rosh Chodesh as the commandment of Your will in the third Holy Temple,
and when Mashiach comes "now,"
today,
one has then also the four days of visitation
(at least until the second day of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan),
In the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach,
and out of joy and goodness of heart.
Verse 25
כה
He instructed to play a melody and said the discourse beginning with the words "Bereishit Bara etc."
Verse 26
כו
It is also customary to study a verse from the weekly portion together with Rashi's commentary,
a topic from the notes of my father on the Zohar,
and a topic from the daily lesson in the Rambam.
Regarding Rashi, one will dwell on a topic that was begun to be discussed before Rosh Hashanah –
about the matter of "shamayim" as it is according to the plain meaning of the verse.
In our portion on the verse "And God called the firmament Heaven" Rashi explains:
"Fire and water that were mixed with each other and He made from them heaven."
Since Rashi does not bring it in the name of the Midrash, it is understood that this is the plain meaning of the verse.
One must understand:
Our Torah is a Torah of truth –
how does it correspond with the actual reality that "fire and water" "intermingle with each other,"
we see the actual reality in the nature of creation that fire and water cannot exist together,
when one mixes them together, the water extinguishes the fire,
or the fire dries up the water?!
One cannot say that Rashi's intention is not to fire and water in their simple sense,
but rather to spiritual fire and water –
because Rashi writes it for a five-year-old studying Scripture
(and especially one who has just begun to study Scripture from Parashat Bereishit),
and he writes it in order to explain to him what "shamayim" is,
and since Rashi does not explain that he means fire and water as they are above in spirituality,
one must say that he means physical fire and water as a five-year-old studying Scripture sees them in daily life,
water in its simple sense and fire in its simple sense,
as he sees them when he drinks water,
and when one recites the blessing "Borei Me'orei HaEsh" in Havdalah. And furthermore:
If one says that this means spiritual fire and water, it does not provide the five-year-old with any explanation of "shamayim,"
because just as he does not know what "shamayim" is, he does not know what spiritual fire and water are.
Consequently, the question arises as above,
how does "intermingle with each other" correspond with the reality that fire and water cannot be mixed together?
And if this was a miracle,
Rashi should have explained it,
as he explains it later regarding the plague of hail:
"And fire flashing amidst the hail –
a miracle within a miracle,
the fire and the hail were mixed, and hail is water, etc."
In addition to the main point –
that here in the creation of the heavens one cannot say that "intermingle with each other" is a matter of a miracle,
because the entire portion discusses the work of creation and the creation of nature,
not a miracle.

Similarly, we will continue what was discussed regarding the height of the heavens –
regarding which there was discussion as to where "shamayim" is according to the simple meaning:
In Parashat Noach it is stated that the generation of the dispersion said, "Come, let us build us a city and a tower with its top in the heavens,"
and Rashi explains*:
"They said, 'He does not have the sole right to choose the upper realms for Himself; we will ascend to the firmament, etc.,'"
"Another explanation: etc. They said, 'The firmament is collapsing just as it did in the days of the flood,
come, let us make supports for it.'" And this is not merely their mistaken reasoning,
but the Most High says, "And now nothing will be withheld from them of all that they scheme to do."
The question arises:
How can a human being ascend to the firmament?!
Another question on this matter:
In Parashat Va'etchanan, on the verse "For ask now of the days that are past, etc., from the day that God created man upon the earth, and from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens," Rashi explains:
"This teaches about the stature of Adam, that it was from the earth to the heavens, and it is the same measure as from one end to the other."
One must understand:
A) In the Gemara it is stated that from the earth to the firmament is a distance of five hundred years. So how is it possible to say that the stature of Adam the First was a distance of five hundred years according to the simple meaning?!
B) To say that the distance from the earth to the heavens "is the same measure as from one end to the other" is a contradiction within itself:
Since the earth is a sphere that is located within the circle of the heavens and is entirely surrounded by the heavens all around –
it is understandable that the distance from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens must be more than twice as much as the distance from the earth to the heavens:
First, the distance from the heavens to the earth in the upper hemisphere
(Gan Eden, for example),
and then the distance from America
(on the other side of the sphere)
to the heavens,
in addition to the thickness of the earth's sphere in between –
so how can Rashi say that the measure from the earth to the heavens is the same measure as from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens?!
With several more precise points on this matter –
and as will be explained below.

Since it is Shabbat Bereishit,
we will dwell on another matter connected to Rashi –
a matter on which Rashi does not comment:
In the portion it is stated, "And the man called names to all the cattle and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field."
The question arises:
What about the names of the fish
(and we have already learned that the Most High also created the fish of the sea) –
why is it not stated that Adam called names to the fish?
Furthermore:
"And whatever the man called a living soul, that was its name"*,
that is, that "its name" of every living animal and bird is its "living soul." Now, since its name is "living soul,"
why did the Omnipresent not also bring the fish so that they should receive from Adam their name –
their "living soul"?!
One must say one of two things:
That they also brought the fish to Adam so that he should call them by names, and for some reason the verse does not need to mention this;
אז מ'האט געבראכט אויך די דגים צו אדה"ר בכדי ער זאל זיי אנרופן מיט שמות ומאיזה סיבה דארף דאס דער פסוק ניט דערמאנען;
or that they did not bring them.
And in whatever manner it may be –
since this is a question in the plain meaning of Scripture,
Rashi should have addressed the matter or written "I do not know,"
as discussed many times that Rashi addresses all matters of the plain meaning of Scripture,
and if he has no commentary he writes "I do not know."
In Tosafot in tractate Chullin there is a discussion about this,
and regarding this one finds a discussion in the words of the Rogatchover;
ועד"ז געפינט מען א שקו"ט בדבר ביים ראָגאַטשאווער 137;
but Rashi on the Torah does not address this.
From this itself it is understood that it is understandable to a five-year-old by himself,
or he understands it according to what Rashi already explained earlier in the Chumash*.

The explanation in Rashi:
Rashi does not need to address how it can be that "they mix
(fire and water)
with each other" according to nature,
because the five-year-old understands it himself, and according to what he previously learned in Rashi:
Earlier in the portion, on the verse "And G-d saw the light, that it was good, and G-d divided between the light and between the darkness," Rashi explained:
"He saw it that it was good, and it is not fitting for it and for the darkness that they should be used in a mixture, and He established for this its boundary in the day and for this its boundary in the night."
Here, at first glance, the same question arises:
How can
(according to nature)
light and darkness be intermingled?
A five-year-old sees that a little light pushes away much darkness,
all the more so more light than that,
all the more so if the light is equal to the darkness?!
For a five-year-old, this is initially not a question at all,
because the meaning of "intermingled" is not that light and darkness both functioned simultaneously,
rather "intermingled" means that this is the opposite of what happened after "and God separated between the light and between the darkness":
The separation consisted of "He fixed for this one its boundary by day and for this one its boundary by night",
that is, that light functions for twelve consecutive hours and then darkness functions for twelve consecutive hours.
From this it is understood that before this, when they were intermingled, the meaning of this is not that light and darkness both functioned simultaneously,
and that light was "stuck" within the darkness and darkness within the light,
rather that there was then no separation and order and fixed times when the light functions and when the darkness functions
(as it was after "and He separated"):
There was an hour of light and an hour of darkness,
or half an hour of light and half an hour of darkness,
and so forth.
That is, that "intermingled" does not specifically mean that two things are inserted one within the other,
rather that they are not completely separated from each other in a fixed order and arrangement,
this is also called "intermingled".
And so too, as Rashi explains further regarding the plague of wild beasts:
"All kinds of evil beasts, snakes, and scorpions in a mixture." The meaning of this is not that the beasts were inserted one within the other literally,
rather that they came not each species by itself,
but in a mixture,
yet as separate beasts.
And so too further regarding the prohibition of diverse kinds,
where diverse kinds is a matter of mixture,
"wheat and barley and a grape seed in one handful" –
the simple meaning is not that one sows a wheat grain "inserted" within the barley or a barley grain "inserted" within the wheat,
rather that one sows them both in one field,
but as separate seeds.
And so too in Parshat Devarim on the verse "and you all approached me" Rashi explains "in a mixture,
and later it says 'and you approached me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders, etc.,'
that approach was proper: the children honored the elders and sent them ahead of them, and the elders honored the heads to go before them,
but here 'and you all approached me in a mixture,'
children pushing the elders and elders pushing the heads."
That is, that "in a mixture" does not mean that one is inserted within the other,
rather that they did not come as separate categories in order
(heads by themselves and elders by themselves and children by themselves),
rather all categories mixed together,
here one finds a head,
here an elder,
here a child,
but each individual person stands by himself.
Therefore,
לג
And based on all this, it is also understandable that there is no question regarding "He mixed
(fire and water)
one with the other and made from them the heavens" –
because the meaning of "mixed"
(according to the simple explanation)
is not specifically that fire and water were mixed together in a manner that one is inserted within the other
(which then indeed cannot be according to nature),
rather that the Almighty brought together the two things
(fire and water)
and from them built the heavens,
but the two things stand there separately,
not mixed one within the other.
This means that this is explicitly not like "fire flashing within the hail",
where it explicitly states that the fire is "within the hail",
and furthermore "flashing within the hail" –
therefore there Rashi must explain that it was a miracle,
but here it does not state that the fire was within the water or the water within the fire,
rather that "He mixed them one with the other and made from them the heavens",
which "mixed" also has the meaning
(as we see in all the aforementioned places)
that not one thing is within the other,
rather that they come together
(but they stand as separate things),
and only from these two things is the heavens built.
And so too, as a five-year-old sees in a building literally:
A building is built from wood, stones, and earth. But the simple meaning is not that the earth is inserted into the stones,
rather the earth is placed between the stones.
And this is also regarding heaven,
that the Almighty built it only from fire and water,
not from fire within water and water within fire, but they remain separate.
And as an example, just as a five-year-old sees at home,
that in the same one and only house, in one place there is fire,
on the stove
(and so forth),
and in another place – water,
a large vessel full of water
(and so forth).
But in a house there are also other things
(besides fire and water),
not so with heaven, it consists only of fire and water.
And this is the distinction of heaven relative to earth,
for ostensibly:
According to the above, that the explanation of "they intermingled with each other and He made from them heaven" does not mean that the fire is within the water and the water is within the fire,
but rather that both things are found there but in different places,
then so too on earth there is water in one place and fire in another place,
why is "heaven" called by this name on account of fire and water and not earth? Rather, this is because on earth there are also other things, not only fire and water,
in order to make earth, the Almighty brought together not only fire and water but also other things;
בכדי מאכן ארץ האט דער אויבערשטער ניט צוזאמענגעבראכט נאר אש ומים נאר אויך נאך זאכן;
not so with heaven, the Almighty made it only from fire and water.
That is, heaven indeed consists only of fire and water, but not that one is within the other,
rather separately,
but only from these two things was heaven made.

The explanation regarding the plain meaning of the height of heaven –
and with an introduction:
Since a teacher of children has taught the Oral Torah, it is inevitable that while he teaches a five-year-old the plain meaning of Scripture with Rashi, that which is stated in the Oral Torah will stir within him,
even though it has no connection to the plain meaning of Scripture.
And this is regarding the concept and height of "heaven":
Even while the teacher teaches a five-year-old the plain meaning of Scripture, that which is stated in the Gemara in Chagigah stirs within him, that "from the earth to the firmament is a journey of five hundred years."
He forgets, however, that here it is about the plain meaning of Scripture for a five-year-old studying the plain meaning of Scripture,
who does not know of the Gemara,
and Rashi in his commentary on the Torah does not bring at all that from earth to heaven is a journey of five hundred years. Why does he not bring it? Because according to the plain meaning, the height of heaven is indeed not a journey of five hundred years!
According to the plain meaning, heaven can be a place and a high part within the earth itself,
where a person can reach.
That is, a place that is a certain distance above the earth is also called heaven.
And from the proofs for this:
In our portion
(and in several places)
it says "bird of the heaven." And among the commentators there is a discussion on this matter!
In Rashi, initially there is no question –
because according to the plain meaning, the height of heaven is not a journey of five hundred years
(and therefore Rashi does not bring it in any place in the Torah),
rather a place that is high above the earth,
and there birds fly.
And it is also proven from this that it says "you shall drink water from the rain of heaven." And one sees in practice that rain
(rains)
comes from the clouds of heaven,
which clouds are indeed high above the dust of the earth,
but they are not a journey of five hundred years,
rather a certain distance above the earth,
where a person can reach.
And particularly in France
(in the country where Rashi lived)
there are
(and Rashi certainly knew of this)
high mountains that reach above certain clouds from which rains descend,
so that when one goes up on the mountains, one can stand above the clouds and there no rain falls, and one sees how from the clouds below him rain pours upon the earth. And this happened to me:
I went up –
there is a place where one goes up –
on a high mountain in France that was above the clouds,
and there it was dry at the same time when below there was rain.
From this it is understood that from "you shall drink water from the rain of heaven" is a proof that according to the plain meaning, heaven can be a high part in the earth where people can reach.
From all these places it is understood that in the plain meaning of Scripture, heaven is not necessarily a journey of five hundred years from the earth,
rather it can also be a high part within the earth itself where one can reach.
Simply put:
When a child of five years of age for Scripture studies in Chumash about the heavens,
this simply means the heaven that he sees physically,
which includes all places that are above the earth,
also where clouds are located, which a person can reach by ascending a mountain.
The Rambam writes that "this that we see them like the appearance of turquoise only to the sight of the eye is due to the height of the air,"
meaning that we do not see the true heaven –
but this is relevant to a child of ten years of age for Mishnah and the like,
but not to a child of five years of age for Scripture,
and for a child of five years of age, heaven is the heaven that he sees,
and heaven from which rains come,
"from the heaven of the rain you shall drink water"
(meaning the height of the clouds)
and where birds fly,
"the bird of the heaven."
Therefore
לה
And even though according to the truth of the matter the Gemara says that from the earth to the heaven is a journey of five hundred years – it is:
A) This is not according to the study in the manner of the plain meaning,
as above.
And one finds many matters that according to one method of study,
derush, remez, or sod,
the interpretation of a thing is in one manner,
and in the manner of the plain meaning the interpretation is in another manner. And both are parts of the Torah of truth:
The interpretation in the manner of the plain meaning is true in the world of the plain meaning. And the other interpretations are true in their worlds,
and as will be explained below.
Furthermore:
B) Even in that which the Gemara says
(in the manner of derush, etc.)
that from the earth until the heaven is a journey of five hundred years,
and that this is the height of Adam the first –
I do not believe that one teaches this according to its simple meaning,
but certainly this means in a spiritual sense,
Because if this is physical, it is an extremely great distance,
as is understood from the calculation in the Gemara that the journey of an average person in a day is ten parsaot,
one can understand from this how high and how far a journey of one year is,
and through this one can know how far a journey of five hundred years is;
ועי"ז קען מען וויסן ווי ווייט איז א מהלך פון ת"ק שנה;
it is entirely impossible to say that in the world, among all the creations in the world, Adam the first walked around, who was physically as tall as a journey of five hundred years!
Therefore it is reasonable to say that this speaks in a spiritual sense.
And to such an extent is this understood,
that when Rabbi Avraham ben HaRambam brings down the matters and statements of Chazal which must be interpreted not according to their simple meaning,
he does not bring this matter,
because it is simply understood that this does not speak according to its simple meaning.
In addition to this, that if one will say that in the manner of derush
(and the other methods of study)
"from the heaven of the rain you shall drink water" means a heaven that is a journey of five hundred years from the earth –
it would have to take a thousand years
(from the beginning of creation)
until rain would come:
a journey of five hundred years from "and a mist ascended from the earth" until it reaches the heaven,
and another journey of five hundred years for the descent of the rains from the heaven to the earth!!
One must say that also in the manner of derush, the height of the heaven being a journey of five hundred years is not according to its simple meaning,
but in a spiritual sense.
This is, however, all in the study in the manner of derush, remez, and sod;
דאס איז אבער אלץ בלימוד ע"ד הדרש והרמז והסוד;
in contrast, in the study in the manner of the plain meaning, heaven means simply physically,
the heaven where clouds are located and from there rains come,
because the child of five years of age has not yet studied and does not know about these matters in a spiritual sense.
And even though one says to a child of five years of age for Scripture that the Most High is located in heaven –
but in truth, for a child of five years of age, it is simply understood that the Most High is located in the earth just as in heaven. Only when one studies the Book of Kings does one learn that "the heavens and the heavens of the heavens cannot contain You, even this house that I have built,"
but for a child of five years of age who has not yet studied this, this is not a novelty,
because he learns that there is a Mishkan in the earth,
based on "and I will dwell in their midst,"
meaning that the Shechinah rests there.
And even if he already knows that the Most High is located in heaven –
this means for a child of five years of age for Scripture,
that the Most High is located above him,
but this does not have to mean higher than a journey of five hundred years and the like,
rather it can mean in the heaven which is a high part of the earth,
just as the Most High is located in the Mishkan which is upon the earth.
Therefore
לו
It follows that in the manner of the plain meaning for a child of five years of age for Scripture, heaven can also mean a high place in the earth,
where the clouds and the like are located.
This does not mean that the concept of the physical heaven according to the simple interpretation, as a child of five studying Scripture understands it –
is incorrect, and this is only according to his comprehension,
and the true interpretation is as it is in the Gemara and in study according to the homiletical, allusive, and mystical methods –
Heaven forbid to say so,
because also the study according to the simple interpretation is a part of Torah,
and on the contrary –
even when one studies the other methods of study
(allusive, homiletical, and mystical)
there is the principle that Scripture does not depart from its plain meaning,
and furthermore:
the simple interpretation is the foundation of halachah,
consequently, if one negates the study according to the simple interpretation, one thereby touches the truth of all the halachos in the Torah!
Rather, the matter in this is,
that in the world of the simple interpretation, the true interpretation is specifically according to the simple interpretation,
and in the worlds above this, the interpretation is according to the other methods of study.
And when a child of five studying Scripture is at the beginning of study and does not yet understand how the matters are also in spirituality,
this does not mean that his understanding according to the simple interpretation is not correct,
rather it is certainly correct,
because the matters according to the simple interpretation are descended from them from where they are in spirituality,
only now he is still only at the study in simplicity of how the matters are in physicality,
afterwards when he grows older he becomes elevated and understands the inner content of the matters as they are according to the other methods of study,
until how the matters are in their root in spirituality.
In this itself there can be matters that exist only in spirituality,
and consequently a child of five has no connection to them,
and matters that exist both in spirituality and also become descended in physicality,
as this is in our matter regarding heaven.
As this is regarding all matters. And for example:
When one studies Chassidus, one knows that the ten powers of the soul that are clothed in the ten physical powers in the human body become descended from the ten sefiros in spirituality.
A child of five studying Scripture, however, does not know about the ten sefiros,
he does not even fully know about the ten powers of the soul. He sees and knows only about the ten places in the human body,
in physicality,
where the powers operate through their activity. But it is understood and simple that this does not mean that his understanding and comprehension is not correct,
certainly it is correct,
because the ten sefiros become descended into the ten powers of the soul that are actualized in the ten places in the body;
ווארום די עשר ספירות ווערן נשתלשל אין עשר כחות הנפש וואס טוען זיך אן אין די עשר מקומות שבגוף;
only the child of five sees only the last level in this,
as it becomes already descended in the physicality of the world,
and when he grows older he will discover that in the ten places ten powers of the soul are actualized,
until he will learn that the ten powers of the soul become descended from the ten sefiros.
And likewise this is also regarding the matter of heaven:
In the root of the matters in spirituality, heaven is Zeir Anpin which consists primarily of Chesed and Gevurah
(the root of fire and water).
And from this a physical heaven in its simple sense was descended in the physicality of the world, which was made from fire and water. But a child of five studying Scripture who is still at the study according to the simple interpretation does not know how the matters are in spirituality,
he knows only how it is
(descended)
in physicality. And about this Rashi tells him in his commentary on the Torah
(for Rashi speaks about the plain meaning of the matters in the physicality of the world according to the comprehension of a child of five studying Scripture),
that the physical heaven consists of "fire and water that mixed with each other and He made from them heaven."
And likewise regarding the height of the heavens:
When the child of five studies the verse "from the rain of the heavens you shall drink water," he does not yet know about the root of the matters above,
that the descent of rains comes through the union of Zeir Anpin and Nukvah,
through that which one draws from Chesed or Mercy of Zeir Anpin
(heaven)
into Malchus
(earth),
and this is the interpretation in that which Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said the Torah on the verse "behold how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity" in order to draw down rains,
because in this verse is stated the matter of the union of Zeir Anpin and Nukvah –
a child of five studying Scripture does not know of this;
ווייסט דערפון ניט קיין בן חמש למקרא;
He knows only simply that physical rains come from the physical sky,
and this is the explanation of "and from the rain of the heavens you shall drink water." And this is also true,
only this very thing, how it is in physicality, becomes drawn down from the matters as they are in spirituality. But a five-year-old does not yet know about this,
consequently he learns this matter for the time being as it is true only in this physical world.
Lamed Zayin.
לז
Rashi, who was after all a mekubal and performed miracles and wrote responsa –
certainly knew of these matters as they are in their spiritual root;
האט זיכער געוואוסט פון די ענינים ווי זיי זיינען בשרשם ברוחניות;
but when he teaches a five-year-old the plain meaning of Scripture, he cannot rely on his knowledge in Kabbalah or on what he writes in his responsa and the like,
rather he must teach it with him simply in this physical world according to the understanding of the five-year-old.
That is to say:
In the Chumash it is written regarding the creation of the firmament –
"And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide between water and water,
And God made the firmament, and divided between the waters which are under the firmament and the waters which are above the firmament etc.,
And God called the firmament Heaven."
In this there are the explanations in Kabbalah and Chassidus, how the matter of the firmament is in its root above, above,
the matter of the parsa etc.,
and connected with this is what Rabbi Akiva said, "When you come to the pure marble stones, do not say, 'Water, water,'"
and there it is also explained wherein consists the matter of the division between water and water in its root above,
upper waters and lower waters,
and that this is the source for the matter of division and dispute in spirituality,
therefore it is not written there "that it was good,"
and therefore the lower waters weep, "We desire to be before the Holy King."
And afterwards there is how the matter is explained according to remez and derush etc. –
which is how the matter of the firmament becomes drawn down into worlds lower down.
All these explanations are entirely the Torah of truth and absolute truth;
וואס די אלע פירושים זיינען אלץ תורת אמת ואמת לאמיתו;
Afterwards, however, there is how the creation of the firmament became drawn down from the aforementioned levels above into this physical world,
the physical firmament and heaven. This is how a five-year-old learning Scripture learns and understands it.
And to him the matter of the division through the firmament between lower waters and upper waters is also understood
("and He divided between the waters which are under the firmament and the waters which are above the firmament")
as it is in physicality:
As discussed earlier,
that according to the plain meaning, heaven
(firmament)
is a place that is higher than the earth where clouds are located,
from which is "and from the rain of the heavens you shall drink water." To the extent that one can ascend certain mountains and stand there above the clouds and see how below them rains go.
Based on this it is understood,
that there are "waters which are under the firmament" and "waters which are above the firmament" and the firmament divides between them:
upper waters are the waters that are located in the clouds above the firmament, and lower waters are the waters that are located below on the earth
(in the rivers etc.),
and when there is the "and a mist ascended from the earth" upward to the clouds, it becomes there water
(upper)
and afterwards it comes down in rains.
That is, that although in the clouds one does not see water literally,
this is nevertheless also water,
only there it stands as a "mist,"
and afterwards water becomes from it.
And as the five-year-old also sees in daily life:
At home he sees a boiling kettle and the like,
where he sees how from water becomes a "mist,"
and afterwards how from a "mist" becomes back water.
All these matters in the physical firmament –
become drawn down from the firmament as it is in its spiritual root,
but a five-year-old has comprehension only of these matters as they are in physicality.
And likewise the matter of the division and dispute between upper waters and lower waters that is explained in Kabbalah and Chassidus as it is above in the parsa etc.,
and the essential matter of "and He divided" which is a matter of gevurah –
also becomes drawn down below into physicality,
and there
(in physicality)
a five-year-old understands it.
And he has an example of this from what he sees in his daily life:
When two types of Jews are together. "Your heads, your tribes" and simple people who cannot learn etc. –
The one who is learned understands that even though they are both Jews,
there can be a dispute and difference of opinion between them,
because these stand on a level of the higher ones and these stand on a level of the lower ones.
And likewise he understands regarding the division and dispute between the upper waters and the lower waters,
that even though they are both waters, there can be a division and dispute between them etc.
And he also understands the matter that "the lower waters weep etc.",
for example –
that the simple people cry because they want to be scholars and are able to learn.

And after the aforementioned lengthy discussion –
that the height of the heavens according to the simple meaning is a high part of the earth,
where there are clouds from which it is "you shall drink water from the rain of the heavens" –
all these aforementioned precise points in Rashi's commentary are now understood:
The explanation of what the generation of the dispersion said, "Let us build for ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens," is not the explanation –
a journey of five hundred years and the like,
but rather where "heavens" is according to the simple meaning:
a high part of the earth where the clouds are located.
And obviously simply:
Since the generation of the dispersion wanted to prevent that there should be another flood
("Once in one thousand six hundred and fifty-six years the firmament collapses, as it did in the days of the flood; let us come and make supports for it") –
they needed to ascend to the heavens there where the clouds of the heavens are located from which the rains come,
as it was at the time of the flood
[And even though at the time of the flood it says, "the windows of the heavens were opened" –
the intention in this is also the height where the clouds of the heavens are located (from which rains come),
only perhaps in this itself –
very high clouds. And it is understood from this that Rashi explains that if they had been worthy, the rains would have been "rains of blessing",
it is understood that the rains came from clouds like all rains],
and there to make "arrangements",
"and we shall make supports for it",
so that a flood should not come.
And likewise the explanation in Rashi's commentary in the portion of Va'etchanan is also understood:
"And from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens –
it teaches about the stature of man that it was from the earth to the heavens, and it is the same measure as from one end to the other":
According to the simple meaning, from the earth to the heavens is not a journey of five hundred years,
but rather "heavens" is a high part of the earth. And this was the height of Adam the first.
And from this it is also understood,
that it can be that the measure from the earth to the heavens is the same measure as from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens –
because Rashi is not speaking here that from the earth to the heavens is a journey of five hundred years
(in which case it would be understood that from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens is more than twice as much,
as above),
but rather this is speaking about "heavens" as it is according to the simple meaning –
a place higher than the earth
(in the place of the clouds and the like).
And according to the simple meaning, there is no fixed measure from where one measures "heavens",
and just as when one says "from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth" and the like, there is no rule from where one counts "earth",
whether one includes in it the entire earth including also all seas
(rivers)
upon the earth,
or only the earth itself,
or only a part of the earth,
excluding the land of Israel and the like, likewise regarding "from one end of the heavens to the other end of the heavens" there is no fixed measure from where one measures;
חוץ פון ארץ ישראל וכיו"ב עד"ז איז בנוגע "למקצה השמים ועד קצה השמים" ניטא קיין שיעור קבוע פון וואנעט מ'מעסט;
the only rule that Rashi gives here is that the height from the earth to the heavens "is the same measure as from one end to the other",
and this can be said. Because here one counts only a part of the heavens,
as above.
And based on all this, many more precise points are understood.

The explanation of this matter in the Zohar:
As preparation for the union of the groom and bride –
the Holy One, blessed be He, and Israel –
at the giving of the Torah,
one needs on the night before to prepare the bride
(Israel)
and to adorn her with ornaments,
and the more preparations and ornaments –
the stronger is the union. Therefore, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai then taught "from the Torah to the Prophets and from the Prophets to the Writings and in the homilies of the verses and in the secrets of wisdom" –
"because these are her adornments and her ornaments",
the matters in the Torah are the ornaments of the bride
(Israel)
as preparation for the union with the Most High.
From this there is a lesson in divine service regarding every matter that effects the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah,
the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and Israel –
that for this there must be the preparation of donning adornments,
that is, the study of Torah "from Torah to Prophets and from Prophets to Writings and in the Midrashim of the verses and in the secrets of wisdom."
Accordingly, the question arises on the other hand:
Through every mitzvah one effects the matter of "the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah." Now, why do we not find that as a preparation for every mitzvah one should study "from Torah to Prophets and from Prophets to Writings and in the Midrashim of the verses and in the secrets of wisdom,"
which are adornments as a preparation for this unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah?
And one must say the explanation of this –
and with an introduction:
It is stated in Pri Etz Chaim and brought in Chassidus that before every mitzvah one should say "For the sake of the unification of the Holy One, blessed be He, and His Shechinah, etc." And so is the custom according to the custom of Poland. But nevertheless, according to the custom of Chabad one says it only once a day before "Baruch She'amar,"
and not before every prayer
(also not before the prayer of the Amidah)
and not before every mitzvah,
even though the matter is brought in Chassidus.
The explanation of this is stated in books and I have also heard it from elderly Chassidim –
that the first time that one says it before "Baruch She'amar" is an ongoing effect for the entire day,
therefore one does not need to say it before every mitzvah.
Regarding this, one must explain why there is not the preparation of the study of Torah
(Torah,
Prophets and Writings and Midrashim and secrets of Torah)
before every mitzvah –
because the first time that one does it on the night of Shavuot,
at the time of the giving of our Torah,
is an ongoing effect that continues for the entire year,
therefore one does not need to study it
(prepare the adornments)
before every mitzvah.
From
מ
The matter in the lesson of the Rambam:
At the end of Hilchos Temurah the Rambam writes:
"Although all the statutes of the Torah are decrees, as we explained at the end of Me'ilah,
it is fitting to contemplate them and whatever reason you can give for them, give a reason. Behold, the early Sages said that King Solomon understood most of the reasons for all the statutes of the Torah."
[And only regarding the reason for the Red Heifer did he say, "I thought I could become wise, but it is far from me."]
And based on this, the Rambam continues to explain a reason for the prohibition of Temurah:
"It appears to me that this that the verse said, 'It and its substitute shall be holy, etc.,' the Torah delved into the ultimate thought of man and the inclination of his evil inclination,
that the nature of man inclines to increase his possessions and to spare his money, and even though he vowed and consecrated, it is possible that he retracted and regretted, etc. And similarly, if he consecrated an animal with inherent sanctity, perhaps he will retract, and since he cannot redeem it, he will exchange it for one of lesser value,
and if you give him permission to exchange the bad for the good, he will exchange the good for the bad and say it is good,
therefore the Torah closed the way before him so that he should not exchange. And it penalized him if he exchanged and said, 'It and its substitute shall be holy,'"
because if one does not penalize him,
the evil inclination will think that he has lost nothing,
but when one penalizes him that "it and its substitute shall be holy,"
this educates him that it is not worthwhile to do this again.
"And all these matters are in order to subdue his evil inclination and to correct his character traits,
and most of the laws of the Torah are nothing but counsels from afar from the Great Counselor to correct the character traits and to straighten all the deeds."
And based on this, one will understand the reason for one of the laws at the beginning of chapter one of Hilchos Temurah:
The Rambam rules there,
that the prohibition of Temurah is only for an individual,
but "the community and partners do not effect Temurah if they exchanged, even though they are warned not to exchange,"
"You find yourself saying that an individual who exchanged, behold, the substitute is holy, etc.,
and one of the partners who exchanged,
or one who exchanged regarding an offering from the communal offerings,
since he has a share in them, behold, this one is lashed and the substitute is not holy."
According to the explanation of the Rambam above regarding the reason for the prohibition of Temurah,
that "the Torah delved into the ultimate thought of man and the inclination of his evil inclination" –
the reason for the distinction between an individual and a partner or a communal offering is understandable:
It is a principle
(which the Rambam also brings)
that "a person does not sin for nothing." Consequently, it is understandable
that when it comes to a communal offering,
which does not belong to an individual,
a person will not invest so much to sin because he gains nothing from it
("a person does not sin for nothing"),
therefore there is no concern that due to human nature, which is "inclined to increase his possessions and to be sparing with his money," he would exchange the animal of the community for an inferior animal. Therefore, he is not punished that "it and its substitute shall be holy."
And regarding a partner who makes a substitution:
When a partner wishes to substitute the animal of the partnership for his animal,
he gains from it only half of the animal of the partnership,
but the transgression he commits entirely –
consequently, he does not have such a strong evil inclination for this,
because he will not gain so much from it
(only half of the difference between the two animals).
Therefore, there is no punishment there that "it and its substitute shall be holy."

This is all a discourse in the laws that pertain to the time when the Holy Temple existed.
And may it be His will that from this discourse and pilpul in these laws,
about which the Sages said regarding offerings that "whoever engages in the study of the sin-offering is as if he offered a sin-offering, etc." –
may we soon actually merit to bring offerings in the Third Holy Temple "as the commandment of Your will,"
"and I will restore your judges as at first,"
when also then there will be all these commandments
(positive and negative commandments)
which are counted in the enumeration of the commandments,
because they are indeed perpetual commandments,
including also the commandment of offerings,
and on the contrary –
then it will be in the manner of "as the commandment of Your will."
And all Jews,
"with our young and with our old, etc., with our sons and with our daughters,"
the completeness of the nation,
will go in the completeness of the land,
"a land which etc., the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year,"
and in the manner of "for the Lord your God will enlarge your border,"
and there itself –
in Jerusalem, the holy city,
"the city that is united together,"
and there –
on the holy mountain,
in the Holy Temple.
Which is all dependent on our deeds and our service in this time,
including also the service in the "miniature Sanctuary,"
synagogues and study halls,
and out of joy and goodness of heart.

In the coming days there will be a "completion" of a book in the Rambam,
and also a Melaveh Malkah for a Gemach fund,
for great is charity that brings the redemption closer,
and especially gemilut chasadim which has the advantage over charity that it is "whether for the poor or for the rich."
And this is also a lesson when Jews are still in exile:
Although "the Holy One, blessed be He, performed an act of charity with Israel by scattering them among the nations,"
and this is "whether for the poor or for the rich" –
nevertheless, together with this, one must know that exile is not the place for a Jew,
and not only for a poor person is exile not a place,
but it is also not the place for a rich person.
And on the contrary –
a rich person needs to be warned even more:
One of "your heads, your tribes"
(a rich person in Torah and commandments)
can indeed delude himself that he is comfortable in exile,
he studies the Torah of light and fulfills commandments that bring light into his life,
so he is comfortable in exile, Heaven forbid!
One tells him –
that for him the exile is even more bitter than for other Jews,
because he turns bitter into sweet and darkness into light!!...
And if he argues that he has the Torah of light and the light of commandments also in exile –
it does not, however, compare to "the light of the seven days,"
and to the light of the moon as it will be in the future
(similar to how it was before the diminution of the moon) –
"and the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun,"
and "the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of the seven days," 343
(the letters of "Gasham")
times as much.
Consequently,
while still in exile, one must cry out "away with the exile" and "Mashiach now"!
And simply –
that the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach comes in actual reality,
simply "now"!
[His Holiness, the Rebbe, Shlita, gave a bottle of mashkeh to R. Y.A. (for a completion of a book in the Rambam).
To the brothers V.
-L., may they live (for the Melaveh Malkah for the benefit of the Gemach fund in memory of their parents, may their memory be a blessing).
And he said –
that they should distribute part of the mashkeh here.
And afterwards he said:]
Those who wish to say "L'chaim" –
should say it "now,"
because we are about to make the "final blessing." And he began to sing "Niet niet nikavo."
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
He gave the food to the honorable R. M.Y. may he live
(for the guests, may they live).
After the Minchah prayer he began to sing "Niet niet nikavo."
