As usual every year –

As usual every year –

Someone should make Kiddush and take out [in the obligation] all those who have not yet heard Kiddush,
so that they can participate in the farbrengen by saying "L'Chaim" and all matters related to this.
Afterwards he began to play the melody of Hakafos of his father, of blessed memory.
And afterwards he instructed to play "Atah Bechartanu".
In the middle of the melody, the Rebbe, shlita, drank from his cup and said "L'Chaim" to the entire audience,
and afterwards he said:
Everyone should say "L'Chaim" as befits a "complete year".
B
ב
It was discussed many times,
that Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah are distinguished in the matter of joy from the other days
(the seven days of Sukkos)
of "Zman Simchaseinu",
Just as the festival of Sukkos
("Zman Simchaseinu")
is distinguished in the matter of joy from the rest of the festivals
(the festival of Pesach and the festival of Shavuos),
that all festivals are "mo'adim l'simchah",
but within this itself, there is more joy on the festival of Sukkos. Therefore, at that time, in the text of the prayer and Kiddush, one says
(in addition to "mo'adim l'simchah" as on all festivals)
also "Zman Simchaseinu",
not as on Pesach when one says "Zman Cheiruseinu" and on Shavuos –
"Zman Matan Toraseinu". And although there is a question among the Rishonim that one should say "Zman Simchaseinu" on all festivals –
nevertheless, the halachah remains
("halichos olam lo")
and minhag Yisrael Torah hi, that one says it only on Sukkos,
including also –
on Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah.
But as mentioned –
within "Zman Simchaseinu" itself, Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah are distinguished,
as is known, that Shemini Atzeres
(including –
Simchas Torah,
the second Yom Tov of Shemini Atzeres)
is a "regel bifnei atzmo l'inyan PZR KShB",
that one of the six matters is "zman bifnei atzmo",
i.e., that one then recites the blessing of Shehecheyanu,
which proves that on Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah there is a renewal regarding the seven days of Sukkos that precede them
(therefore one can recite the blessing of Shehecheyanu),
including also –
a novelty in the matter of joy
("Zman Simchaseinu").
And within Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah themselves –
there is an additional joy on Simchas Torah relative to Shemini Atzeres. This is evident from the very fact that one recites the blessing of Shehecheyanu also on Simchas Torah
(in addition to having recited it on Shemini Atzeres):
Although the simple reason for this is due to safek d'yoma,
i.e., that in the time when they would sanctify [the month] based on sighting, there was a doubt in the diaspora as to when Shemini Atzeres is,
and it could be that in truth this is a day after [the festival],
and Shemini Atzeres is in truth the seventh day of Sukkos,
therefore they instituted a second Yom Tov of the exile
(Simchas Torah),
and they then recited Shehecheyanu also on Simchas Torah due to safek d'yoma,
and by virtue of the custom of our fathers in our hands, this custom remained also now when the fixing of the months is based on the calculation –
However, since this became the custom of Israel, which is Torah,
and every matter in the Torah of truth
(including also in the custom of Israel which is Torah)
is true and with utmost precision,
and "Shehecheyanu" is a blessing that one recites only on a new thing,
and especially now
(due to the fixed calendar based on calculation)
there is no safek d'yoma –
one must say that the fact that one recites the blessing of Shehecheyanu also on Simchas Torah is not only due to the custom of our fathers in our hands and on Simchas Torah one merely repeats Shehecheyanu again,
but this is also due to Simchas Torah itself,
that on Simchas Torah there indeed is a renewal relative to Shemini Atzeres,
because "again" and "Shehecheyanu" are a contradiction in and of itself:
When a thing occurs again,
one may not recite "Shehecheyanu" over it,
"Shehecheyanu" one recites only on a new thing.
And especially based on what is known that in several matters, custom is stronger than halachah,
to the point that "custom nullifies halachah",
and particularly one finds this regarding Simchas Torah –
as it states in the Rema and in several Acharonim that on Simchas Torah one does several matters that throughout the year are against the halachah
(such as regarding the Torah reading,
and more).
Consequently, it is even more understood,
since the custom of Israel is to recite Shehecheyanu also on Simchas Torah,
this is not only due to the simple reason according to halachah
(due to safek d'yoma),
but due to the essence of Simchas Torah itself.
And even though then in Eretz Yisrael they only celebrate one day Yom Tov,
i.e., that Simchat Torah –
the joy of the completion of the Torah –
they celebrate on the same day together with Shemini Atzeret;
פראוועט מען אין דעם זעלבן טאג צוזאמען מיט שמע"צ;
but the difference between Eretz Yisrael and Chutz LaAretz is,
that in Chutz LaAretz they celebrate two days Yom Tov,
unlike in Eretz Yisrael they celebrate one day –
this itself is a matter of halachah in the Torah. Consequently, it is understood that what we celebrate Simchat Torah on a separate day and we then recite Shehecheyanu,
is not merely because of the custom of our forefathers,
but because of that which on Simchat Torah there comes a chiddush regarding Shemini Atzeret,
including also –
a chiddush in the matter of joy.
From this it follows that on Simchat Torah there must be the greatest joy –
even more than the joy of Shemini Atzeret,
which is an addition upon the joy of "Zeman Simchateinu" in general
(the festival of Sukkot),
which is an addition upon the joy of "Mo'adim LeSimchah".
The explanation of the greatness of the matter of joy of Simchat Torah will be understood further based on what was discussed on the nights of Simchat Beit HaShoevah –
which is also the greatest joy,
to the extent that "one who has not seen Simchat Beit HaShoevah has never seen joy in his life",
i.e., that the seeing of Simchat Beit HaShoevah is a preparation and vessel in order that afterwards one can receive in completeness
(in a manner of seeing)
the great joy of Simchat Torah
(and all joys in his life,
as was discussed then) –
It was then discussed,
that all these levels in joy come as an addition upon the matter of joy in general that exists at all times.
Beginning from the matter of joy that exists immediately at the first moment of the coming into being of the created being,
due to the very matter of coming into being ex nihilo and absolute nothingness:
The very coming into being of the created being is also connected with a service and fulfillment of the will of Hashem –
"against your will you live",
and as the words of the Gemara that "all of Ma'aseh Bereishit etc. were created with their knowledge, were created with their desire",
and as Rashi explains:
"He asked them if they desire to be created and they said yes".
I.e., that in the very matter of the coming into being of the created beings,
the created beings fulfill the will of Hashem by that which they "agree" to be created. Consequently, this brings about a matter of joy in the created beings,
due to that which they fulfill the will of Hashem which causes "nachat ruach before Me that I said and My will was done",
the will regarding the very matter of coming into being.
And as it is written "Yismach Yisrael BeOsav",
and the explanation of this is,
that a Jew must be permeated with the joy of "Osav"
(of the One who created him)
so that this becomes his joy,
just as the Above is joyous with "Maasav" –
"Yismach Hashem BeMaasav",
and as explained in the continuation of the Rebbe Maharash
(initially passed over)
how the joy and delight of the created being becomes one thing with the joy and delight of the Creator.
And this joy exists at all times,
for the coming into being of created beings from absolute nothingness is a constant coming into being,
according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov.
It follows that at all times there is constantly the matter of joy for all created beings due to their very coming into being.
To this comes additional joy at the time a created being fulfills a mitzvah of the Holy One, Blessed be He.
As the ruling of the Rambam at the end of Hilchot Lulav in his book Mishneh Torah and Yad HaChazakah which is a book of "halachot halachot",
and written "in clear language and a concise way etc. for small and great" –
that "the joy that a person rejoices in the performance of a mitzvah etc. is a great service".
I.e., that the Rambam issues a halachah for every Jew,
whether a great one and even a small one
("for small and great"),
and all levels in between –
from which it is understood that he has upon this the abilities because "I do not ask etc. except according to their ability" –
that at the time he fulfills a mitzvah there should be in it joy –
a point of without limit,
for joy is without limit,
as is known that joy breaks boundaries.
And this is even regarding one mitzvah.
All the more so when speaking about Jews,
that even the lowest type among them are "full of mitzvot like a pomegranate",
all the more so a higher type among Jews –
they have many more mitzvot than "like a pomegranate",
and in each one of these many mitzvot there is a "great service" to fulfill it with joy.
Meaning: So every single day a Jew fulfills a multitude of commandments,
and consequently –
he has every day a multitude of joy,
because every commandment must be fulfilled with joy. And this is spoken not only on Shabbos and Festivals,
but even on weekdays,
that according to the Torah is "Who distinguishes between holy and profane" –
every weekday is filled with a multitude of commandments,
and consequently –
filled with a multitude of joy.
And the joy of a commandment that exists every day is not merely joy,
but a joy in the manner of "great service",
a great service. And the explanation:
As mentioned above,
the ruling in the Rambam is that "the joy with which a person rejoices in the performance of a commandment etc. is a great service"
(like all rulings in the Rambam)
"for the small and the great". The question arises:
Granted, when speaking about a small one,
it is understandable why joy of a commandment is a "great service",
but when speaking about a great one in commandments,
which also includes a righteous person and a completely righteous person –
how can one say that joy of a commandment is a "great service"? All his days throughout the entire year he was surely a keeper of Torah and commandments and fulfilled them with joy,
as the Torah states –
so how can one say that for him this is a "great service"? This comes to him easily!
The explanation of this is:
In this very thing lies the ruling
(for a "great one"),
that joy of a commandment should be for him a "service" and a "great service" –
as explained in Tanya,
that the concept of service,
a "servant of G-d",
consists specifically in that he changes his natural habit,
and not merely actual nature,
but even habit becomes his second nature. To the extent that even one who repeats his chapter one hundred times, due to his habit, is not called a "servant of G-d",
because service consists specifically of changing one's natural habit.
From this it is also understood regarding the service of joy of a commandment –
that this must be a "great service",
meaning that even if he is accustomed all his days to fulfill commandments with joy,
when another commandment comes to him,
it is not sufficient that he fulfill it with the joy that he has from his habit until now,
rather this must be a new and superior joy,
incomparably greater than the joy that comes from his natural habit,
a joy that comes through service
(changing his natural habit),
until –
"great service".
On the other hand, the ruling in the Rambam is also "for a small one",
for a simple person and the like,
that also regarding him the concept of "great service" in joy applies –
without limit,
even though his service is the service of a simple person.
And moreover –
by a simple person, the joy is simply a "great service",
because he does not know of all these levels in joy as a great one knows,
and when he rejoices it is not just like that,
but a simple joy,
and he knows what "service" and "great service" mean from his simple daily life,
because in daily life –
his day he does things that require a great service –
consequently when he is asked to fulfill commandments with joy,
he does not do it just like that,
but with a great service.
From all this it follows,
that every single day there is by every Jew –
both a small one and a great one –
a multitude of joy,
because by every Jew there is a multitude of commandments every day,
and every commandment he fulfills with joy,
consequently there is by him a multitude of joy.
And furthermore:
By him come greater and greater joys,
because every joy of a commandment must be by him a "service"
(changing the habit),
meaning in a new manner and in a superior manner than the joy that was before this –
consequently it follows,
that with every commandment that he fulfills,
there must be in it an even higher joy. And this must be not merely "service",
but "great service",
meaning that changing his natural habit is not merely relative to the level of his habit beforehand,
but a "great service",
completely incomparable,
that only then can the Torah of Truth call it "great",
because if there is another greater than it, one cannot call it simply "great".
And the joy itself in the fulfillment of the commandments every day must be in the manner of "leaping and dancing before the L-rd" –
as the Rambam concludes the matter
(in the Laws of Lulav)
in connection with the "great service" of joy of a commandment. And "leaping and dancing" simply means also the matter of melody in speech with the mouth and dances with the feet
(according to the simple interpretation of these descriptions).
That is, that the joy of a commandment
(in the manner of "great service")
must be a simple joy –
that he sings and dances!
And this itself must be in a manner of "leaping and dancing" –
"with all might",
with a storm,
until a storm that is above all measure and limitation –
according to the simple interpretation of "with all might",
that this is with all strength and storm,
so that there is no greater might than this,
because if it is not in a manner that is completely above measure and limitation, it is not "with all might",
for there is still a thing that measures and limits that does not allow this to be "with all might".
And the joy that is above measure and limitation
("leaping and dancing" "with all might")
exists in every commandment. And then, when it comes to another commandment,
there must again be joy in the manner of "leaping and dancing" "with all might" which comes with a "great service",
a change from the ordinary, even regarding the joy above measure and limitation that preceded it.
And as mentioned –
this exists every single day,
even on a weekday,
which is filled with a multitude of commandments,
consequently –
with a multitude of levels in the joy that is above measure and limitation.
All the more so in the commandments themselves –
a commandment whose nature and content is the matter of joy,
like the commandment of Torah study,
as it is written "the precepts of the L-rd are upright, rejoicing the heart",
as explained in the Shulchan Aruch that this refers to Torah study.
That is, that the very commandment of Torah study evokes joy in a person. And in addition, a person must add to this joy through his own service –
through his fulfilling the commandment itself with joy in the manner of "great service" and "leaping and dancing" "with all might". It is therefore understood that in this commandment there is even more joy.
All the more so when it is not about an ordinary weekday,
but about "festivals for joy",
and all the more so about "the time of our joy",
and furthermore –
on Shemini Atzeret,
and furthermore –
on Simchat Torah,
when we again recite "Shehecheyanu",
and from Simchat Torah we take the joy of Torah for the entire year.
And in all these levels of joy –
from the joy in every particular commandment on every weekday,
until the most sublime joy on Simchat Torah –
there must be
(as in all matters of holiness)
"they shall go from strength to strength",
and a true going is a going that is incomparable.
And
ו
That is, that although all the levels in service have a common point between them, that they are all called by the name "strength",
and likewise all the levels in joy have the common point that they are all called "joy" –
nevertheless, there must be "they shall go from strength to strength",
an incomparable going from one level of joy to the higher level of joy,
until one reaches the most sublime level of joy on Simchat Torah,
and then itself –
the joy must come in the manner of "leaping and dancing" "with all might" and in the manner of "great service",
incomparably more joy than that which comes from the "leaping and dancing" "with all might" according to its ordinary state in all the aforementioned levels of joy that preceded it.
From all this, the greatness of the joy that must be on Simchat Torah is understood –
a joy in the manner of "leaping and dancing" "with all might" and in the manner of "great service",
above all measure and limitation and all the levels of joy throughout the entire year,
where each level of joy is without limit,
and on Simchat Torah there must be an even higher level of joy!
And as the aforementioned ruling at the end of the Laws of Lulav in the Mishneh Torah and the Strong Hand of the Rambam, that "the joy that a person rejoices in the performance of a commandment etc. is a great service", and this must be in the manner of "leaping and dancing before the L-rd" –
and this law also applies regarding Simchat Torah,
as is understood. And especially since Simchat Torah has a connection to the Laws of Lulav and the end of the Laws of Lulav –
because Simchat Torah comes in continuation of the fulfillment of the commandment of the lulav,
"and you shall take for yourselves on the first day",
during the seven days of Sukkot.
And one should also connect the entirety of the Rambam's book with Simchat Torah:
The Rambam called his book "Mishneh Torah". On Simchat Torah, we complete the entire Torah,
through the fact that we complete "Mishneh Torah"
(from the Torah of Moshe),
and upon this comes the joy of Simchat Torah for the completion of the Torah
(Mishneh Torah).
In addition to this:
The book of the Rambam is also called "Yad HaChazakah"
(the name that Jews added).
And as discussed many times,
that this is based on the wording of the verse at the end of the entire Torah and at the end of Mishneh Torah and at the end of Parshat Berachah which we conclude on Simchat Torah –
"and all the strong hand etc. which Moshe performed before the eyes of all Israel".
On Simchat Torah is the only time we read in public with a blessing before and after the entire Parshat Berachah
(the conclusion of "Mishneh Torah")
including the final verse
("and all the strong hand etc.").
On Monday and Thursday and the like –
we read a portion
(the beginning)
of Parshat Berachah,
but not the entire portion.
However, on Simchat Torah we read in public and with a blessing the entire portion until its conclusion "and all the strong hand etc. which Moshe performed before the eyes of all Israel".
And according to the wording of the verse, we also call the book of Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon –
"Yad HaChazakah" of Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon.
It follows that the entire book of the Rambam
(Mishneh Torah and Yad HaChazakah),
including and especially also the conclusion of Hilchot Lulav
(in the book of the Rambam)
regarding the "great service" of joy,
has a special connection with Simchat Torah.
Z
ז
From the connection between Simchat Torah and "Yad HaChazakah" there also emerges a lesson in the service of man in connection with the "great service" of joy on Simchat Torah,
as above:
The Torah does not only state that there was a reality of "signs and wonders" and "the strong hand" which Moshe Rabbeinu performed
("and all the strong hand etc. which Moshe performed"),
but the Torah also says that this was revealed "before the eyes of all Israel". As we see simply in many places in the Chumash,
that the signs and wonders that Moshe showed were seen by all Jews
(as follows).
From this it is understood that there is a lesson from this in the service of every single individual of Israel,
"from small to great",
according to the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that everything one sees is for a purpose,
and a purpose in the essence of the matter –
I was created to serve my Creator. Consequently, it is understood,
that since they showed all Jews,
"before the eyes of all Israel",
"all the signs and wonders" and "all the strong hand etc. which Moshe performed" –
this is for the purpose that from this there should come about in the service of each and every one of Israel to his Creator.
And just as this applies to "all Israel" at that time
(when they all saw the "strong hand" of Moshe Rabbeinu),
so too is this a lesson for all Israel throughout all generations,
for since this is written in the Torah as a teaching,
there is from this a teaching for all Israel.
And since this verse
(at the conclusion of Parshat Berachah)
we always read on Simchat Torah
(as part of the entire portion)
in public and with a blessing –
there must be from this a lesson also in the matter of the "great service" of joy on Simchat Torah.
One of the lessons from this:
Every Jew –
"from small to great" –
must have the "great service" of joy,
as above.
Therefore we show "before the eyes of all Israel" the "strong hand etc. which Moshe performed" in order to teach every Jew –
"from small to great"
(for whom the book Yad HaChazakah of the Rambam was written) –
that in order for him to have "service" in general and especially "great service" in the matter of joy
(that this should not be according to his natural habit,
as above),
he must attain a "Yad HaChazakah",
the matter of strength and power to be able to perform the "great service".
Ch
ח
And in more detail:
One of the first "signs and wonders" that was "before the eyes of all Israel" –
was the miracle of the splitting of the Red Sea. This was seen by all Jews,
as is simply understood from the fact that all "the children of Israel walked on dry land in the midst of the sea",
"and Israel saw the great hand etc.",
until this brought them to "and they believed in Hashem and in Moshe His servant".
Furthermore:
Not only did all the Jews who then lived, souls in bodies, see the miracle,
but it is stated in Chazal that "even the fetuses in their mothers' wombs recited song at the sea,"
and as explained there* that the fetus in its mother's womb saw the miracle not only as being "the thigh of its mother,"
but also as an independent entity the fetus saw and understood with comprehension and perception and contemplated the miracle,
until this caused him
(the fetus)
himself to recite song in actuality!
From this one sees that the matter of what was shown, "the signs and wonders" and "the strong hand" "before the eyes of all Israel,"
the intention in it is that this should evoke in them the matter of song and joy.
And from this there is a lesson not only for "all Israel" of that time,
but for all Israel throughout all the generations –
because it is stated "Then Moshe and the Children of Israel will sing," "sang
(past tense)
is not said, but rather 'will sing'
(future tense)
,"
" 54,
meaning that every moment is a future relative to the moment before it,
consequently, for every single moment throughout all the generations, the matter of the Song of the Sea applies, which comes about through the fact that we read and learn in Torah about the signs and wonders that were shown "before the eyes of all Israel."
And the matter of song upon the miracle is not merely a small thing in the service of man,
but it is a most essential matter, to the extent that the coming of Moshiach depends upon it. As the Gemara relates that "The Holy One, blessed be He, wished to make Chizkiyahu Moshiach,"
but because he saw the miracles that happened with him and he did not recite song upon them,
this did not come down into actuality,
and because of this the exile drags on until this very day! If he had then recited song, he would have become Moshiach and the entire matter of exile would not have been,
not only the second exile,
but even not the first exile! –
Thus it is stated in the revealed [Torah]!
That is to say, that even though the miracles were in actuality and the Supreme One and Chizkiyahu both saw the miracle,
it was relevant that Chizkiyahu should recite song upon it openly,
so that others should hear it,
to the extent that even Sancherev should hear it!
To such an extent is song relevant,
that upon it depends the coming of Moshiach our righteousness!
T
ט
From this is also understood the lesson now, standing on Simchat Torah,
how much it is relevant that we now sing song with great joy,
"leaping and dancing" "with all might,"
dances and melodies with joy in simplicity, in an open manner so that all around can see it,
as we learn it from the conclusion of Parshat Berachah
(which we read on Simchat Torah)
that "the signs and wonders" and "the strong hand etc. which Moshe performed" were shown –
"before the eyes of all Israel,"
in order that this should evoke in them a matter of song and joy,
as it was at Kriat Yam Suf,
"Then [they] will sing."
And in this very thing there is the lesson,
that one must have with it "the strong hand" in order to increase the joy in the manner of "great service,"
not a joy from one's natural habit until now,
but in an entirely new manner that comes to him through his service in his own portion.
This means simply:
On Simchat Torah it is not sufficient that one open a Chumash and review the verses of the Song of Moshe or open a Tehillim to Chapter 18 and recite the Song of David,
and the like.
This is a good thing and a fine thing,
and the songs are most exalted matters –
but on Simchat Torah one demands of a Jew that he stand in joy from his service in his own portion,
that is to say, that you should simply dance with your feet,
and your limbs should shake
(from joy),
and your head should sway!
The Song of Moshe is indeed a most exalted matter and a song that all Jews recited,
and in addition there was also the song of the women etc.,
and likewise the Song of David is a most exalted matter,
which speaks about "He magnifies the salvations of His king and performs kindness for His anointed,"
David Melech Moshiach,
and this song is also relevant to all Jews,
as it is stated that the entire Book of Tehillim David recited as "the sweet singer of Israel,"
he recites the songs in the name of all Israel,
that is to say, that it is as if all Jews recite the songs –
one could seemingly have thought that one can fulfill Simchat Torah by reciting these songs and hymns;
האט מען לכאורה געקענט מיינען אז מ'קען יוצא זיין שמחת תורה מיט זאגן די שירות וזמרות;
Nevertheless, I never heard from the Rebbe, my father-in-law, that on Simchat Torah one must say chapter 18 of Tehillim!
And the reason for this he himself emphasized –
Because on Simchat Torah, "the mitzvah of the day is with joy":
Then he himself must stand in simple joy from the perspective of his own service,
He must dance and sing and be in joy!
And one tells him that the matter of joy on Simchat Torah
(like all matters that are demanded of a Jew)
is "It is not hidden from you and it is not distant,"
Rather, "the matter is very close to you,"
But this must be "in your mouth" –
With your mouth you must sing,
"and in your heart" –
With your heart you must feel,
"to do it" –
You must act with your power of action,
And then one tells you that "the matter is very close to you, etc., in a long and short way" and this is "with the help of Heaven,"
As it is written on the title page of Tanya
(Which also this the Alter Rebbe wrote,
as is known from the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe).
This, however, is all a matter of speech;
דאס איז אבער אלץ אן ענין פון דיבור;
There is a speaker and there is a listener –
But on Simchat Torah the intention is not speech and not hearing and understanding and comprehension,
Rather simple joy,
That one performs "hakafot" with a Torah scroll not as it is open so that one can read from it,
Rather as it is wrapped in a mantle,
Because the joy of Simchat Torah is not connected with understanding and comprehension in Torah,
Rather it is above that.
And since one is already in the time of Simchat Torah,
Even if speech and hearing assist in bringing out the joy in actuality –
The main thing must be the joy in actual deed,
The deed is the main thing.
From this it is also understandable,
That it is not enough that one decide in thought that one will be in joy,
And rely on this that "a good thought the Holy One, blessed be He, joins to action" –
Because one cannot know when He will join it to action,
Whether tonight or it could possibly be even tomorrow morning. And although then too it is Simchat Torah –
But on Simchat Torah itself there are two distinct services,
The service of the night of Simchat Torah and the service of the day,
As we see in the custom of Israel that one performs hakafot both on the night of Simchat Torah and on the day of Simchat Torah,
And according to the custom of Chabad in this,
That at night one performs seven hakafot,
And by day –
Three and a half hakafot. Consequently, it is understandable that it is not enough to fulfill the joy only by day,
Rather one must also fulfill it at night.
Therefore one cannot rely on "the Holy One, blessed be He, joins to action",
Because that could be tomorrow during the day,
All the more so if one relies on oneself,
It could be even later...
Rather one must immediately at night fulfill the joy in actuality,
And not postpone it for twelve hours,
Or for six hours,
And even not for fewer hours,
And even not for a few moments,
Rather in one hour and in one moment,
In an instant –
There must be "leaping and dancing" "with all might"!
The Rebbe, may he live for many good days, Amen, stood to his full height and began to sing the niggun of hakafot of his father, of blessed memory, and danced in his place.
Earlier, the words of the president of our generation were mentioned, that on Simchat Torah "the mitzvah of the day is with joy".
Which the president of our generation said, who "the president is everything",
But the approach of Chabad is that it should not be only "the righteous shall live by his faith",
Do not read "shall live" but "shall live",
Rather it must come down into "the righteous shall live by his faith",
That each one must himself perform his service
(In this matter –
The matter of joy)
In his own capacity,
And perhaps even more than one capacity.
The way that this reaches from the president of our generation to every person in the entire world –
Is this first and foremost through his emissaries,
For a person's emissary is like himself,
And an emissary appoints an emissary even up to a hundred emissaries,
And they are all like the one who sent them.
And especially an emissary who is already an emissary for three years, which is a presumption. But even if he is an emissary for less than three years,
He also has the force of an emissary,
For he is in the same category with the same name "emissary",
For a person's emissary is like himself.
Therefore, it is worthwhile that the emissaries who are currently present at this gathering should say "L'Chaim" over a full and complete cup.
(As in all matters of holiness, one needs a full and complete vessel),
complete also from the term completeness. And afterwards, one should also convey this to the emissaries who are not present here and who will later return from bringing joy to Jews.
(The Rebbe, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, shlita, smiled,
and said:)
At a farbrengen, there is also a doctor present –
he can claim that there is someone who, due to his physical health, cannot drink a full cup. The main point in this is –
not that one should drink the full cup in one go,
but that one should begin with a full cup,
and afterwards one can drink it over the course of the farbrengen before the final blessing,
and one can even add to it,
for the intention is not to diminish or prevent, but to add, etc.
Afterwards, there are those of a melancholic or sanguine temperament who will claim,
that regarding themselves there is a doubt whether they are emissaries.
One tells them that they too must say "L'Chaim" over a full cup,
for the very fact that a doubt occurred to him,
is a proof that it has relevance to him. In addition to what in all these matters, doubt –
one cannot rule stringently,
but rather –
leniently,
to life and blessing!
The Rebbe, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, shlita, began to sing "And I will pour out for you a blessing." And all the emissaries, may they live, said "L'Chaim".
It is stated in the books of numerology that "emissary" combined with ten has the numerical value of "Moshiach".
And the explanation of this is:
First and foremost, an emissary must be fit to be an emissary,
he must be similar to the one who sent him,
"Just as you are members of the covenant, so too your emissary is a member of the covenant." Afterwards, one must have that the sender appoints him as an actual emissary,
through a document of authorization or by speech, etc.
This is the manner in which the emissary becomes an emissary,
but still before his actual work in carrying out his mission.
Afterwards, the emissary must carry out his mission in actuality,
by utilizing his ten powers within his vessel.
And regarding our generation, this means:
Everyone who was born in this generation was born an emissary of the Nasi of the generation,
the Nasi of our generation,
who is the Nasi of all the people of the generation. Afterwards, the emissary must utilize his ten powers within his vessel in carrying out his mission in actuality.
And when the emissary utilizes his ten powers,
the concept of "Moshiach" is revealed
(the numerical value of "emissary" together with ten (powers)),
it is revealed how he is similar to the sender
("Just as you are members of the covenant, etc.")
until he becomes one entity with the sender
(a person's emissary is like himself) –
the Nasi of our generation,
who is Moshiach,
with all the interpretations of Moshiach:
anointed one,
chosen one,
a leader and shepherd of Israel,
until that this
(Moshiach)
is even the simple interpretation of Nasi,
and I will have no objection if one interprets that the Nasi of our generation is Moshiach our righteousness literally,
because such is indeed the reality –
that the Nasi of our generation was Moshiach in his generation and is Moshiach in our generation.
And those who ask questions, etc. –
there is upon this the simple explanation,
that this is so regarding every Nasi in his generation,
that he is the Moshiach in his generation –
for the Nasi of the generation is the Moses our teacher of that generation
(until one says even more,
that every Torah scholar is called "Moses",
"Moses, you have spoken well"),
and Moses is the first redeemer, he is the final redeemer,
Moshiach our righteousness,
consequently it follows that the Moses of every generation is Moshiach our righteousness
(the final redeemer).
As explained in many places that the Nasi of the generation,
including the Nasi of our generation in this generation of ours,
is the aspect of the general singular essence of the generation,
for singular essence is the level of Moshiach.
And based on this, it is understandable,
that when an emissary of the Nasi of our generation utilizes his ten powers
(emissary together with ten,
corresponding to his ten powers)
in order to carry out his mission in actuality –
the concept of "Moshiach" is immediately revealed.
He argues,
that this is too much,
he cannot digest and bear such a title. One tells him:
There is no time to wait until you digest it,
and if you wish to interpret "Moshiach" with the other interpretations thereof:
an anointed one,
a shepherd of Israel,
a leader, etc.,
But the main point is,
that you need to know that being a Jew in this generation,
you are an emissary of the Nasi of our generation,
who is the Nasi of all the people of the generation,
therefore you must go out to fulfill with all ten powers the mission that he gave you to spread Judaism and Torah and commandments in every place,
including also –
to go with joy to gladden Jews in other places,
and there speak about all the 613 commandments and laws of the Torah,
including simply that one must believe in the coming of Moshiach,
as the Rambam rules at the end of the laws of Kings and their Wars and the King Moshiach and rules there that Moshiach is a flesh and blood person who is found in a physical body in this physical world,
and the belief in the coming of Moshiach is not one detail in the Torah,
until that "all the books are filled with this matter"
And through that which the emissary fulfills his mission with all his ten powers –
there is revealed "Moshiach",
beginning from "Moshiach" within him
(the yechidah in his soul),
until the general yechidah.
A Jew can indeed argue:
What connection does he have to such a lofty matter as Moshiach,
until one tells him that he has the power to reveal Moshiach through that which he carries out his mission with his ten powers?
One can explain the matter to each one:
Just as there is the Moshe Rabbeinu of every generation,
the Nasi of the generation,
so too it descends also individually in each one that he has the Moshe within him. As the Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya that every single Jew has the aspect of Moshe within him,
and this is found within him in an internal manner,
until that this causes that fear of G-d is for him "a small matter".
And just as this is regarding Moshe Rabbeinu –
the first redeemer,
so too is this regarding Moshiach –
that the first redeemer is the final redeemer:
Just as the Nasi is the aspect of the general yechidah –
Moshiach –
of the generation,
which in our generation is the Nasi of our generation,
so too does every Jew have within himself the aspect of yechidah of the soul.
As our Sages say regarding every soul "five names are called to it,
nefesh ruach neshamah chayah yechidah",
meaning that every Jew has the aspect of yechidah in his soul,
and not only in his soul as it stands above,
but as it descends into a body. Of course simply,
that every morning the Almighty returns to him his soul,
"the soul that You gave me",
in all five levels,
including the aspect of yechidah.
And according to the above,
that yechidah is the aspect of Moshiach,
it follows that every Jew has the aspect of Moshiach
(yechidah) within him.
And as discussed many times,
that the matter is also understood from the two interpretations in our Sages on the same verse "a star shall go forth from Yaakov":
One interpretation of "a star shall go forth from Yaakov" is,
that it refers to Moshiach
(and regarding this the Rambam explains the continuation of the verse in the laws of Moshiach).
And a second interpretation
(in the Yerushalmi),
that it refers to a regular Jew:
The Gemara relates there,
that someone saw in a dream "a star",
and it was interpreted that it refers to a Jew.
Meaning, although in general there are vain things in a dream,
and "dreams speak falsely",
but in this matter it indeed has a true content,
that it refers to a Jew.
Which is actually the simple interpretation of "a star shall go forth from Yaakov" –
as is known that Yaakov includes within himself all the souls of Israel,
as the matter is also simply,
that from him descend all Jews.
One can therefore learn that these two interpretations are indeed not in dispute,
and one Sage says one thing and another Sage says another thing,
but they have no connection between them. It is however known that two interpretations on the same verse have a connection between them even though they are in two separate places and speak about two separate matters,
with the proof for this from the study of "shatnez".
And regarding this it is understood concerning the two interpretations of "a star shall go forth from Yaakov",
that both interpretations are connected.
And the matter in this is understood according to what is explained in Maor Einayim
(of R. Nachum of Chernobyl,
a student of the Baal Shem Tov and of the Maggid),
that every Jew has in his soul a spark of Moshiach.
And in the language of Kabbalah it is the aspect of yechidah which exists in every soul
(as above),
the small spark,
a created spark that is one thing –
"yechidah to unify You" –
with the spark of the Creator.
It is a principle that "everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create a single thing in vain." And certainly this is so regarding all matters of the world,
all the more so that this is so regarding the aspect of Yechidah –
a spark of Mashiach –
which is found in every soul of a Jew,
that it is not in vain, Heaven forbid,
but in it there is a benefit and intention.
And simply:
When you were given the aspect of Yechidah,
a spark of Mashiach,
it is not so that it should "sleep" within you, Heaven forbid,
rather you must "fan it into flame,"
until through this you reveal the general aspect of Yechidah,
Mashiach our Righteous One.
And this you do by fulfilling with all your ten faculties your mission,
beginning with the service with yourself,
and in addition fulfilling with all ten faculties your mission to spread G-dliness in your portion of the world until the entire world and to reveal the aspect of Yechidah
(a spark of Mashiach)
in every Jew whom you encounter and to reveal the G-dliness that is in every created being
(as will be explained),
until through this you will reveal in the world the general aspect of Yechidah –
Mashiach of our generation,
which is the Nasi of our generation.
And based on this, the concept that "Shaliach" combined with ten –
corresponding to the ten faculties of the soul –
is "Mashiach" is understood,
because through the fact that every Jew in this generation,
each of whom is an emissary of the Nasi of our generation,
uses his ten faculties and carries out his mission in the world through them,
he reveals the aspect of Yechidah within him,
the spark of Mashiach,
and the Yechidah of other Jews,
until through this he reveals Mashiach
(the general Yechidah)
in the entire world.
That is, on one hand, the aspect of Yechidah was placed into his soul,
therefore it is "very close to you, this matter,"
it is a "short path";
ס'איז א "דרך קצרה";
but together with this, he cannot then go for a walk and do nothing,
rather he was given ten faculties and he must utilize them and through this reveal his aspect of Yechidah.
That is, this is not simply a "short path" because "it is very close to you, this matter"
(he has within himself the aspect of Yechidah),
rather this is a "long and short path,"
because in order to reveal it, he must first use his ten faculties,
which requires service in a long path,
for "if I have not toiled and found, do not believe."
Beginning with the service with his intellect
(the first of the ten faculties),
the study of Torah,
which requires contemplation and toil in a long path,
and together with this, it must not remain in his intellect alone, rather it must descend into the other ten faculties,
"with all your hearts and with all your soul"
[which is stated in the second portion of the Shema when one is still at a level of not doing the will of the Omnipresent,
then there too is the "with all your hearts and with all your soul"],
which includes his ten faculties
(and also "your hearts" with two beits,
"with your two inclinations"].
And after there is the service in a long path with his ten faculties,
then this is a "long and short path,"
and all this –
"with the help of Heaven"
(as he concludes on the title page of the Tanya).
And based on this, the explanation is understood that one can explain to each person how he has a connection to bringing Mashiach our Righteous One,
for ostensibly he can argue,
that he has no connection with such lofty matters.
One tells him:
In your soul there is the aspect of Yechidah,
a spark of Mashiach. And since it is found within you, it is a proof that you must reveal it. And through the fact that you reveal the spark of Mashiach within you,
and in addition you also reveal the aspect of Yechidah in other Jews,
you can reveal Mashiach our Righteous One –
the general Yechidah.
He argues further:
The spark of Mashiach within him is only a small spark,
it is no more than a tiny amount,
and one cannot touch it or see it or hear it,
and one cannot place it on the "shelf" –
so how does one reckon that he will be able to accomplish with it?
One says to him:
It is a rule that when you grasp the essence in part, you grasp it in its entirety,
and this is understood intellectually according to what is explained in Chassidus
(in the discourse of 5672 and in many places).
That is, even though this is a "part" and this is the "whole,"
which are simply two opposites –
nevertheless,
when it comes to grasping the essence,
they are both equal,
and when one grasps a part of the essence,
even a small spark of the Creator,
one grasps it in its entirety.
And this matter is also according to the revealed [Torah]:
When one touches something of a general matter,
one touches the entire thing. Because it is an indivisible point
(in the language of the Rambam in the Guide for the Perplexed,
and in many places).
It is known that there are two types of "something":
A "something" that can be divided into a "something" from a "something." A "something" that cannot be divided.
Like the law regarding idolatry
("You shall not have for yourself a foreign god"),
that its prohibition is [even] in a minute amount
(even a true minute amount that cannot be divided),
as it is said, "Nothing shall cleave to your hand,"
because even the smallest minute amount of idolatry pertains to the entire matter.
And this is the case, and all the more so, in a good quality
(which is)
abundant –
regarding the matter of faith,
"I am the L-rd your G-d."
And this is understood in our matter,
since the small spark
(Yechidah)
is one thing with the spark of the Creator,
the essence
[in addition to that which the entirety of the soul,
even the level of Nefesh,
is the second soul of Israel, it is truly a part of G-d above,
with all the interpretations of "truly"] –
it grasps the entire essence!
Therefore one says to the Jew,
that with this small spark
(the level of Yechidah within him)
he can accomplish,
accomplish the most elevated matters. And moreover:
Specifically the level of "small" –
reaches the highest level. As is explained in many places that the essential love from above is for Jews who are on the level of "small,"
like Yaakov who "is small" and "David is the small one,"
as it is said, "For Israel is a youth and I love him." And therefore a Jew with his small spark can accomplish all matters.
And an example of this from the law in the revealed [Torah],
that one who betroths a woman on condition that he is righteous, she is betrothed,
lest he contemplated repentance and became completely righteous. From this one sees what a contemplation of repentance of a Jew –
and a contemplation is the smallest thing –
can accomplish:
Even if one knows that someone was certainly the opposite of completely righteous,
and afterwards he betroths a woman –
one says that through a mere contemplation of repentance,
which takes but a moment, in the blink of an eye
(i.e., the shortest time),
and even less than the time it takes to say the letters of the word "moment,"
because contemplation and thought include more and are faster than speech –
he becomes through this immediately completely righteous regarding the betrothal
(if there was a matter of theft involved –
there must be "and he shall return the stolen object,"
but regarding the contemplation of repentance itself, it causes him to be completely righteous regarding the betrothal],
and the betrothal takes effect with full force until the end of all generations,
because the purpose of betrothal is
(as one says in the blessings)
"an eternal building" –
"be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it"
(you understand),
all this is dependent and established because of the mere contemplation of repentance.
One sees from this how a mere point,
a mere contemplation of repentance,
which takes the shortest time –
accomplishes betrothal with all the force therein until the end of all generations.
And this is also understood regarding the revelation of Moshiach our righteousness:
Even though the level of Yechidah in the soul of each and every Jew is only a small spark,
it nevertheless grasps the entire essence. The Jew, however, must do his service in order to reveal his level of Yechidah and to fan it into a flame. And since the small spark grasps the entire essence,
the Essence and Being,
it is no longer a wonder how a Jew can, through the revelation of the level of Yechidah within him, bring about the revelation of the general level of Yechidah,
the coming of Moshiach our righteousness in the entire world!
Which is truly understood simply from the law in the Rambam,
that "every person must see himself throughout the entire year as if he is half liable, etc.,
and likewise the entire world is half liable, etc.,
he performed one mitzvah, behold he tipped the scale for himself and for the entire world to the side of merit and caused for himself and for them salvation and deliverance":
The Rambam does not differentiate what kind of a single mitzvah one must do in order to tip the scales of the entire world and bring salvation and deliverance.
That is, even a very small mitzvah,
in thought or in speech or in deed,
and it does not matter whether this is a long thought or a long speech and a great deed,
but even a very small thought,
speech or deed –
through this he tips the scales for himself and for the entire world to the side of merit and brings to himself and to them salvation and deliverance,
until true salvation and deliverance through our righteous Mashiach,
and this itself –
in an instant,
Israel repents "and immediately they are redeemed,"
which "immediately" according to halachah
()
(129)
means instantly and immediately, literally,
and all this –
even through an addition of a very small thing.
And as is understood simply from the parable that the Rambam gives on this in the halachah itself, of a scale that is exactly balanced on both sides. From which it is understood that if one adds even the smallest thing –
this tips the scale to one side.
And likewise it is also understood regarding the mission of every Jew in the world –
that he must utilize his ten faculties in fulfilling his mission in the world,
and through this he reveals the aspect of Yechidah
(spark of Mashiach)
within himself,
and through this –
he reveals the G-dly spark that exists in every single created being in the world,
until through this he reveals the general aspect of Yechidah,
the Mashiach of our generation:
The totality of the mission of every Jew as an agent of the Almighty is to reveal G-dliness in the world,
to reveal the G-dly spark that exists in every single created being in the world.
According to the well-known explanation of the verse "From Hashem are the steps of a man established" –
"When a Jew comes to a place,
it is for a purpose,
to perform a mitzvah, etc.
A Jew is an agent of the One Above,
an agent wherever he is,
he is the power of the one who sent him." And the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov on this matter is known on the verse "And it shall be when you come to the land, etc., and you shall go to the place that Hashem your G-d will choose to cause His name to dwell there":
"When a man goes to a place,
it is not that he goes, but rather he is led,
by Divine Providence."
That is, when a man goes to a place, it is not for a matter of livelihood and the like,
but rather to carry out a mission in that place,
because the Almighty is "the One who sustains and provides for all" with His full, open, holy, and ample hand,
and He can give him a livelihood in his own place,
so that he would not need to go out of his country,
or from his city,
and even not from his neighborhood,
and even not from his courtyard. Consequently it is understood,
since he has left his place,
it is not for livelihood,
but Divine Providence leads him that he should go to this place because he has a mission to fulfill there.
And the mission is:
"To cause His name to dwell there –
to publicize G-dliness in the world." He should reveal there the name of the Holy One, blessed be He.
That is, even if this is a situation of "there,"
which indicates a place distant from holiness
(as explained in Likkutei Torah) –
there a Jew must accomplish "to cause His name to dwell there,"
a revelation of G-dliness.
At first glance:
It is after all "the whole earth is full of His glory,"
so how is it possible to say that the "name" of the Holy One, blessed be He, is found "there,"
in a place distant from holiness? This is understood according to what is explained in Chassidus,
that a name indicates a state of concealment, and one needs the person who calls out in the name in order to reveal it.
And likewise in our matter:
Although "the whole earth is full of His glory,"
nevertheless the Almighty created the world in a manner of concealment and hiding,
so that there the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, is in concealment,
to the extent that there can be an existence of "there,"
a place of kelipot. And the intention is,
that a Jew should come and call out and reveal His name also in "there,"
and through this accomplish that there should be "to cause His name to dwell there" in a revealed manner,
"to cause to dwell"
(Shechinah)
named for that which dwells and is clothed within all worlds."
And the service of our father Abraham was:
"When He took me from my father's house, the God of the heavens and not the God of the earth,
the inhabitants of the world did not recognize Him and His name was not common in the land",
afterwards Abraham brought it about that also the inhabitants of the world should know that the Supreme One is "the God of the heavens and the God of the earth",
"that I made Him accustomed in the mouth of the creatures". And as it is stated regarding Abraham "and he called there in the name of the Lord, the God of the world",
"do not read 'and he called' but rather 'and he caused to call',
this teaches that our father Abraham caused the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, to be called by the mouth of every passerby and traveler etc.",
"he taught the creatures to call in the name of the Lord, the God of the world",
not "the God of the world",
meaning that the world and Divinity are, as it were, one thing.
And corresponding to this is the mission now of every Jew –
to bring about "to cause His name to dwell there" in every place and location where he arrives,
also there where the people think that it is only "the God of the heavens".
Meaning, they do not say the opposite,
rather with them there is a lack of knowledge,
they do not know that in addition to this that He is "the God of the heavens", "the whole earth is full of His glory". He must effect that they should know this. And not only in a manner of "and he called there in the name of the Lord, the God of the world",
that he himself says it,
rather "do not read 'and he called' but rather 'and he caused to call'",
he must effect that all inhabitants of the world should proclaim thus!
And of course,
that he must effect this upon them in pleasant ways and in peaceful ways. For ostensibly he might think:
since he speaks to such people who know
(still)
not that "the whole earth is full of His glory" –
he must shout at them,
and call them names etc.!
One tells him,
that the way of the Torah is specifically in pleasant ways and in peaceful ways,
and if you have fingernails –
it nevertheless has
(also)
a benefit
(because there is nothing in the world that is in vain),
that if there is a necessity for this,
you must use the nails upon yourself
(as is known the saying of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the leader of our generation* ),
but not upon another, heaven forbid,
and regarding another the way is –
pleasant ways and peaceful ways.
And since the Torah says so plainly,
and "I do not ask etc. except according to their power",
it is a proof that one can accomplish and bring about with the other in pleasant ways and in peaceful ways,
until peace also from the term completion,
as our sages said: if there is peace here, everything is here.
It follows that the general mission of every Jew is to bring about "to cause His name to dwell there",
to publicize Divinity in every place and location,
also in the aspect of "name",
where Divinity is in concealment,
and not only to publicize Divinity there
("and he called there in the name of the Lord, the God of the world"),
but also to reveal the Divine spark that is found in every created being and every created being in the entire world,
so that it should become "and he caused to call there in the name of the Lord, the God of the world",
that the created beings themselves proclaim "in the name of the Lord, the God of the world".
And as is known that in every created being and every created being in the world there is the Divine spark that gives it life etc.,
until the spark of the Creator,
the power of the Essence that is in it. As explained in the Epistle on Holiness,
that the coming into existence of created beings ex nihilo is from "His essence and His being etc. whose existence is from His being and is not caused by any cause that preceded it, heaven forbid"
(as follows).
And when a Jew goes out into the world and fulfills his mission
(with all his ten faculties)
to reveal the Divinity that is in all parts of the world –
it becomes a preparation for the revelation of "and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh together shall see that the mouth of the Lord has spoken":
Every created being in every place and location in the world,
even the flesh itself,
will see,
in a manner of vision,
the word of the Lord
("the mouth of the Lord has spoken")
that gives it life,
and this will be in a manner of "together",
all levels together,
and as it is written "from their smallest to their greatest",
with all of them there will be "they all shall know Me",
the Essence and Being.
What ostensibly:
what connection does the aspect of flesh,
and moreover "together"
(from their smallest to their greatest),
have with "Me"? The explanation of this is
(as above):
In every created being in the world there is the Divine spark that gives it life,
and even more –
the power of the Essence that is in it,
as explained in the Epistle on Holiness that the coming into existence of created beings ex nihilo is from "His essence and His being etc. whose existence is from His being and is not caused by any cause that preceded it, heaven forbid",
the created being is one thing with the true being.
Meaning that "all flesh together" has in it not only the word of the Lord that gives it life
("the mouth of the Lord has spoken"),
but also the power of the Essence,
the true being –
"Me".
What does it say in the revealed aspect? The Rambam writes at the beginning of his book of laws
(where he writes everything in clear language,
in an explicit manner):
"All existences etc. did not come into existence except from the truth of His existence." This means:
All created beings,
even the most inanimate of the inanimate,
derive not only from the word of G-d,
but from "His existence,"
the existence of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and furthermore –
from "the truth of His existence"!
And according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that the essence, when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it –
it is understood that every created being is connected with the essence and being. Therefore,
from the perspective of the revelation of the essence
("Me")
it becomes "together,"
"from their smallest to their greatest" –
because every part,
whether it is a small one or a great one,
grasps the entire essence.
And the manner in which one reveals this is through the fact that Jews are now fulfilling their mission, each one in his place, to reveal the G-dly spark and the power of the essence that exists in all created beings.
Beginning through the fact that he reveals the level of yechidah in his soul,
by means of his performing the service with all his ten faculties,
Then he explains,
that although the level of yechidah is only a small spark,
and even if he performs only a small action with a small thing in the world,
it nevertheless grasps the entire essence –
therefore it has the power to tip the scales of the entire world and bring salvation and deliverance through revealing the general yechidah,
Moshiach our righteousness,
into the world.
And simply,
that the small spark of Moshiach that is in each and every one
(the level of yechidah in his soul)
has the power to ignite the walls of exile,
according to the simple meaning of the matter of a spark of fire,
that it is not "dying embers,"
but a living fire,
and as is the nature of a spark of fire,
that when one touches it even only once to thorns and the like,
and there is no preventing factor,
it ignites all those thorns and they become completely burned.
Regarding this in the allegory:
The spark of Moshiach that is in each and every one ignites the thorns of exile –
"When a fire goes forth and finds thorns etc."*,
as explained in the Zohar that "when Israel were exiled and the Temple was destroyed," the Holy One, blessed be He, "cast thorns and thistles
(thorns),
and placed them beneath Him,"
and the thorns oppress the Divine Presence,
the Divine Presence in exile,
but through the fact that there is the "when a fire goes forth,"
one ignites the thorns with a spark of fire,
the small spark of Moshiach
(the level of yechidah),
and every Jew does it in his place of mission,
in every place in the world –
it ignites the walls of exile,
until it burns them completely,
and then Moshiach is revealed automatically
(the general yechidah)
about whom it is said "Behold, He stands behind our wall, looking through the windows, peering through the lattices"!
One will immediately interpret that we are speaking here
(only)
about Kabbalah and Zohar etc.!
One must know,
that we are speaking here about simple matters that pertain to the simple service of every Jew,
and even on weekdays,
that every Jew must fulfill his mission in his place,
in his country etc.,
and there be "lamps to illuminate,"
by revealing his small spark
(yechidah),
and utilizing it in order to refine and reveal the sparks of holiness that are found there,
until through this he ignites and burns the walls of exile,
and reveals Moshiach who stands "behind our wall."
From this is understood the responsibility that every Jew has, having within him the level of yechidah,
a spark of Moshiach,
and he has the mission to reveal it in the world,
and to go out into the world and there awaken and reveal among Jews their level of yechidah and their faith in the coming of Moshiach,
and through this –
to reveal Moshiach in actuality.
And although it is not with our will that we will go out of exile
(as per the well-known saying) –
but this does not exempt from the obligation and necessity to cry out,
and to cause others to cry out,
that we already want Moshiach –
"The sprout of David Your servant, speedily cause to sprout,"
and on Shabbat and festivals four times a day –
"May our eyes behold Your return to Zion with mercy"! And since a Jew says it in prayer,
and especially in the silent prayer,
when he stands like a servant before his Master –
he certainly means it truthfully. And it is a certain thing that he does not want it over a period of time,
because if one is not a fool, one does not want to postpone a good thing,
even for half an hour,
even for one moment!
And through this very thing that one believes and cries out with truth that one wants Moshiach –
this very thing hastens his coming.
And since one has been given within a Jew the bechiyah of yechidah,
a spark of Moshiach,
and together with this one was given the aforementioned mission and in this he must utilize his ten powers,
one was certainly given the powers to carry this out –
Consequently, one says to a Jew:
you must know the responsibility and the merit that you have,
consequently, you cannot think to yourself that you indeed have the bechiyah of yechidah,
a spark of Moshiach,
and afterwards you will go stroll with it! What does it mean to go stroll –
one must bring down Moshiach in actuality below ten handbreadths?!!
Strolling one will go in the future in the Garden of Eden!
As the Gemara relates regarding Jeroboam,
that the Almighty said to him "Repent, and I and you and the son of Jesse will stroll in the Garden of Eden",
only because of this that he was not yet worthy for this, it was not carried out in actuality.
For this the Almighty said to a Jew who is a scholar. As the Gemara says that Jeroboam studied one hundred and three facets of the Torat Kohanim,
until the Gemara says that all the Torah scholars compared to him and to Achiyah HaShiloni are "like grass of the field before them",
like a blade of grass in a field. And his greatness is understood from this very thing that the Almighty said "I and you and the son of Jesse will stroll in the Garden of Eden",
for the Almighty does not say this to everyone.
And since the Almighty wanted so and said so
("I and you and the son of Jesse will stroll in the Garden of Eden"),
one must say that ultimately the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, will be carried out,
for "the word of our God shall stand forever",
it is an eternal matter
(and even though it is written "and the Lord relented" and the like –
this is no contradiction to this that the word of the Lord is eternal,
and elsewhere it is explained).
One cannot say that because someone did not do his service properly, the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, should not be carried out!
One must say that in the future certainly the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, will be carried out.
And even though it is written that Jeroboam has no portion in the World to Come,
it is stated in the books that after he is punished, he too will have a portion in the World to Come
(in the world of resurrection),
and then the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, will be carried out in actuality that "I and you and the son of Jesse will stroll in the Garden of Eden". And moreover –
then there will also be the virtue of "intentional sins become for him like merits".
And since the story is written in the Torah,
one must say that from this there is a lesson for each and every one. And one can say,
that through this very thing that one learns from it a lesson in the service of holiness –
one thereby rectifies the sin of Jeroboam and it becomes "intentional sins become for him like merits".
Regarding our matter –
one must know,
that strolling one will do in the future,
but now one must do the service in actuality,
as explained at length above.
The point of all the above that pertains to each one in our generation,
that each one is an emissary of the Nasi of our generation,
and especially –
the special emissaries of the Nasi of our generation,
including –
an emissary appoints an emissary up to even one hundred emissaries,
that each one of them is like the one who sent him. And one should then pass on the wealth also to the emissaries who are not here now:
Every Jew is an emissary of the Almighty to fulfill Torah and commandments that the Almighty has given him,
and to publicize G-dliness in every place and to every person whom he can reach.
In order to make easier and in order to bring out more openly the mission –
the Almighty gave Jews a Nasi in every generation,
until in our generation –
the Nasi of our generation,
who "reveals his secret to his servants the prophets",
and as explained in Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah that the attribute of mercy above is the "revelation of G-dliness through tzaddikim and signs and wonders that are in the Torah",
including also the signs and wonders of the tzaddikim,
as one saw by the Nasi of our generation signs and wonders,
and there are those who are present at the farbrengen who saw signs and wonders,
and they remember about this.
And although it may be that it is not always in their memory and it may be that they are thinking about another thing –
this does not change the reality that it was so in actuality.
And furthermore:
not only does it not change the reality in the world,
but also the reality in their memory –
as the Alter Rebbe explains in Hilchot Talmud Torah,
that even when one forgets a matter in Torah, "this forgetfulness ascends upward to the Throne of Glory, etc., but not above the Throne, as it is said, 'there is no forgetfulness before the Throne of Your Glory'"
(and with this he explains why even one who will forget what he learns should learn new matters in Torah,
for ostensibly he could think,
that it would be better for him to review old matters,
rather than learning new matters which he will in any case forget],
and as is explained at greater length in Likkutei Torah,
and in Hilchot Talmud Torah it is brought as halachah.
From this it follows also regarding our matter,
that although in his revealed memory it appears that he does not remember the signs and wonders of the Nasi of our generation,
this does not affect his true memory as it is from the aspect of the level that is above the Throne of Glory. He only needs to reveal it also in a manner that he should simply remember it in the memory of his intellect,
and from his memory of intellect he must then draw it down into his other ten faculties,
until actual deed –
that he should go out to fulfill the mission that the Nasi of our generation gave him,
and gave to each one of this generation,
that one should be "candles to illuminate",
and not in a manner that he remains in his place and he has windows "that are transparent and sealed" from which light goes out to the entire world,
as it was in the Holy Temple,
rather he must simply go away from his own four cubits and go out into the world,
and there spread Judaism in general,
and in particular –
disseminate the wellsprings outward,
Which this
(the general matter of the revelation of the inner dimensions of Torah)
began in general at the time when it became "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom",
and further –
in the time of the Baal Shem Tov when the matter of "your wellsprings shall spread forth outward" came about,
and further through the Alter Rebbe and especially after Petersburg,
until the time of the Nasi of our generation,
who said that the mission of every Jew in this generation is to disseminate the wellsprings outward literally,
outward beyond which there is no outward,
even into seventy languages.
And he said that for this one must go away from his place and go out to all the countries and all the places in the world,
and there do the mission of spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings.
One will ask:
Where does this simple meaning stand in the revealed Torah? Does it stand in the Midrash,
that "one of you will go into exile to Barbaria and one of you will go into exile to Samatria"
(the names of the countries at that time),
and the intention is in order to fulfill there the mission of spreading Judaism and the refinement of the sparks and the revelation of G-dliness in that place,
until in the manner of "and he called there in the name of the L-rd, G-d of the world",
as above.
And through that which one fulfills the mission with all his ten faculties,
beginning from revealing his own aspect of yechidah,
and also revealing G-dliness in the entire world –
one has the power to overcome the entire world and bring salvation and deliverance,
that is –
to reveal the general yechidah,
Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
All of the above is still with brevity of speech,
and it was said earlier that the main thing is actual deed,
and afterwards one will interpret simple explanations and interpretations –
therefore one explains what the intention in all this is in actual deed,
"Tafaro da flachu" –
for all the emissaries of the Nasi of our generation
(and one should afterwards convey it to the emissaries who are not here).
For in truth all Jews in this generation are emissaries of the Nasi of our generation,
because he is their Nasi,
on the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He;
בשליחותו של הקב"ה;
only this itself must be in a manner of "His kingship they accepted upon themselves willingly",
one does not coerce anyone,
each one has been given free choice so that he should want it himself. And in this itself consists the mission of all the emissaries of the Nasi of our generation –
to awaken and reveal in each one the inner will to accept His kingship in the manner of "His kingship they accepted upon themselves willingly" –
The intention of all that is stated in actual deed is –
then each one must actually go out to spread Judaism in every place,
and spread the wellsprings outward,
and through this reveal the general singular essence –
Moshiach Tzidkeinu!
And as stated,
the intention is in actual deed,
for the deed is the main thing. Along with this, he must also utilize his other ten powers,
including the power of intellect,
through the study of Torah, etc.,
but along with this he must also know that great is study that brings to deed,
the greatness of his Torah is specifically when it comes down into deed
(as explained in the laws of Talmud Torah of the Alter Rebbe).
And if someone has a doubt whether he is an emissary of the Nasi of our generation –
one tells him:
You have a doubt –
then grab hold of the mission and fulfill it in actual deed! Moreover:
The very fact that such a doubt occurred to you proves that it has relevance to you,
because if not –
from where would such a thought come to him?!...
And that which a doubt in the matter was cast into him
(and not a certainty),
even though in truth he is indeed an emissary –
is in order that he should cast out the doubt,
through this there should come to him an additional elevation,
the elevation of service in the manner of negation,
negative commandments,
the advantage of subjugation and transformation:
If a doubt had not occurred to him,
he would have only the advantage of positive service,
positive commandments,
and he would not have anything to cast out;
און ער וואלט ניט געהאט וואס צו ארויסווארפן;
but when a doubt in the matter is cast into him,
he has something to cast out!
And the explanation is:
When a doubt in a matter occurs to someone,
he must know that this comes from Amalek,
for Amalek in gematria equals doubt. And the intention of the entire existence of Amalek and the
(its gematria)
doubt and coldness
("who happened upon you on the way")
that is cast in –
is in order that through this there should come an additional commandment to the Jewish people,
the commandment of "you shall blot out the memory of Amalek",
that one should cast out the doubt so that nothing remains of it.
Based on this, a wondrous matter is understood regarding the commandment of eradicating Amalek in this time:
The commandment is counted in the count of the commandments, from which it is understood that it is a commandment that applies for generations
(for only the commandments that apply for generations are counted in the count of the commandments).
The question arises:
What is the content of this commandment in this time –
the war with Amalek was in the generation of Moses our teacher,
and in the generation of Saul,
and will be in the generation of Moshiach
(as per the translation of Targum on the verse "the Lord has a war with Amalek from generation to generation"),
but in this time, the entire reality of the war with Amalek in actual deed does not exist?
Moreover:
The Rambam presents a novelty that also in the future, when the entire reality of Amalek will not exist,
nevertheless, at that time the commandment of eradicating Amalek will exist,
for it is a commandment for generations,
also in the future,
and as he explains it there.
So the explanation of this is
(in the inner dimension of matters),
that the commandment of eradicating Amalek in the future is entirely not connected with an existence of actual evil,
but rather in order to have the advantage that comes about through negative commandments
(subjugation and transformation).
And accordingly –
and all the more so –
in this time,
when "darkness covers the earth and thick darkness the nations",
there is indeed relevance to a matter of war, at least with the matter of doubt and coldness of Amalek –
the intention in this is,
not the essence of the matter of doubt, Heaven forbid,
but rather in order that through this one should have the advantage that comes about through casting out the doubt.
This is also an answer to one who writes me a letter,
then another letter, etc.,
that he has doubts in faith. I answered him,
do not think about it,
you will not have any doubts. He told me,
that he cannot refrain from thinking. One tells him: –
The entire intention in that which the doubts were given into you,
is in order that you should have something to cast out and through this have, analogous to, the advantage of the negative commandment in the future,
and were it not for this, that the doubt had occurred to you, you would not have had anything to cast out!
The foundation of the above is explained in the holy book Tanya,
where he writes,
that when one falls into extraneous thoughts during prayer, "let his heart not fall within him to be from this a despised sadness,"
because the thought does not come from him,
but from the side of the opposing force,
and the intention in this is "he should not respond at all with any argument or reply against the extraneous thought, etc., but rather make himself as if he does not know, etc., and remove them from his mind and increase strength in the power of his intention."
And this is also in the aforementioned matter regarding the doubt whether he is a messenger:
This itself shows that he has a connection to it,
and the intention in this doubt is –
in order that he should cast it away.
All of the above –
regarding the service of a messenger with his ten powers to reveal his singular soul until revealing Moshiach
(the general singular soul) –
applies throughout the entire year;
איז בכל השנה כולה;
All the more so when one stands on Simchat Torah,
for joy
(in general)
breaks through barriers,
all the more so the greatest joy of Simchat Torah –
this even more assists the service of the messenger to break through all the barriers of exile and all the barriers of small and great
("from their smallest to their greatest")
which prevent the small spark of the singular soul within the soul from being revealed in all its strength,
and through this to reveal all the essence,
until revealing –
Moshiach our righteousness,
at which time all barriers, concealments, and hidden things will fall away,
and it will be "and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see that the mouth of the Lord has spoken,"
the revelation of G-dliness throughout the entire world.
And based on this, one can explain that which connects Moshiach our righteousness with "and eternal joy upon their heads":
It is understandable that Moshiach has a connection with "a new Torah from Me shall go forth,"
the revelation of the innerness of Atik and the like,
but what connection does he have specifically with "and eternal joy upon their heads"?
And one can say the explanation of this,
because joy breaks through all barriers,
including the barriers of exile,
and all these barriers will be nullified in the true and complete redemption through Moshiach our righteousness.
Therefore, they also connected
(above, section 11)
the matter of the mission with a matter of joy and the saying of "L'Chaim U'Livrachah" on Simchat Torah:
There are several formulations that one can say upon drinking and saying "L'Chaim." The regular formulation of the leader of our generation was –
"L'Chaim U'Livrachah." And one must explain the meaning of this –
in connection with Simchat Torah:
"Chaim" has the numerical value of "Lulav." And when one says "L'Chaim," its meaning is "to the Lulav,"
that is to say, that it is drawn into an innerness,
as explained in the Siddur with the discourse of Chassidus and in the discourses of the Admor Maharash that "Lulav" is the letters "Lo Lev,"
that is to say, that it is drawn into the heart,
into the innerness. And this is connected with Simchat Torah –
which comes following the taking of the Lulav on the festival of Sukkot.
Afterwards, it is also drawn into "Livrachah,"
blessing and drawing down. And this is also connected with Simchat Torah –
as discussed above that then one reads the entire portion of Blessing. And afterwards, "they join the beginning to the completion,"
the conclusion of the Torah,
the conclusion of the portion of Blessing,
to the beginning of the Torah,
the beginning of the portion of Bereishit,
for the Torah begins with a Beit,
and it is explained in the Zohar the reason for this,
because Beit is the acronym of Blessing,
and the intention in this is not that it should remain, heaven forbid, as a Beit in acronym,
but rather that it should come down in revelation into the word Blessing,
it is drawn down in revelation into a blessing and a revealed drawing down.
And the intention of this "L'Chaim U'Livrachah" that one says on Simchat Torah is in order to draw this down upon the entire year –
as is known that all the festivals in the month of Tishrei are general festivals,
from which one takes and draws into the service throughout the entire year,
and from Simchat Torah one takes the joy of Torah and the joy of a mitzvah throughout the entire year. And based on this, it is understood that from the saying of "L'Chaim U'Livrachah" on Simchat Torah, "Chaim" and "Blessing" are drawn into the service throughout the entire year –
from the joy of Torah,
which is our life and the length of our days,
and the joy of a mitzvah,
about which it is said "and live by them."
And for all these matters, one has the empowerment from the Torah and its promise that one will certainly succeed in this,
and the more one will do in this –
the more one will succeed in this,
until the primary success –
the true and complete redemption through Moshiach our righteousness,
and he will take out all Jews from exile..
And all together will go to the Holy Land,
"a land that the L-rd your G-d cares for; the eyes of the L-rd your G-d are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year."
"Beginning" is spelled deficiently, [which] is the letters of "Tishrei,"
that is, that from that which is spelled deficiently comes forth the revelation and lesson that this refers to Tishrei,
which is the beginning and head of the entire year,
starting on Rosh Hashanah,
which is the head of the entire year,
but then it is still in a manner of "in concealment,"
afterwards it comes forth in revelation "for the day of our festival,"
on the festival of Sukkot,
and in a manner of absorption and inwardness –
on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.
And in the Holy Land,
the completeness of the land,
will go all Jews,
the completeness of the people,
"with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters,"
and their silver and their gold with them,
together with the completeness of the Torah and His commandments,
In the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,
speedily in our days, literally,
literally literally.
As is customary in recent years, we also speak of a matter in the verses of "Atah Hareita" which is recited before "Hakafot."
And before this we will speak of another special matter that exists on this night –
the night of Simchat Torah
(a matter to which one does not pay attention),
the beginning and head of the entire Simchat Torah:
The farbrengen on the night of Simchat Torah comes after the evening prayer on this night. In this prayer, one said for the third time
(in this year)
"He causes the wind to blow and brings down the rain":
The first time one said it in the Mussaf prayer of Shemini Atzeret,
the second time –
in the Minchah prayer of Shemini Atzeret,
and the third time –
in the evening prayer of the night of Simchat Torah.
And the matter in this:
The simple explanation of "He causes the wind to blow and brings down the rain" is connected with the matter of livelihood in its simple sense,
because "for as the rain comes down, and waters the earth, and makes it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater."
And this is a matter that is connected specifically with the service of man,
as explained in Chassidus, the difference between dew
("He causes the dew to descend")
and rain and precipitation
("He brings down the rain"),
that dew is drawn from above and is not connected with the service of man below,
but rain is connected with the service of the lower one:
it is drawn through an arousal from below,
"and a mist went up from the earth,"
and also after its drawing down it is connected specifically with the service of man,
as it is said "for the L-rd G-d had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to work the ground,"
"when man came and knew that they are necessary for the world, he prayed for them, and they descended, and the trees and grasses grew,"
and for this there must simply be working of the ground by man
(sowing wheat and the like)
in order that there should grow there
(through the rain)
wheat from which one makes bread.
That is, that rain is indeed drawn from above,
and before this there is the matter of "He causes the wind to blow" from above,
but for this a man must make a vessel in a natural way through working the ground, etc. –
"and the L-rd your G-d will bless you in all that you do."
And based on this it is understood that the matter of the request for "He causes the wind to blow and brings down the rain" is simply connected with a blessing in livelihood,
sustenance,
and consequently it is understood that one is blessed with children and life,
because one must have someone to give the sustenance to,
and all this –
in a manner of abundance,
children, life, and sustenance in abundance, and in all of them abundance.
And at the time when one requests "He causes the wind to blow and brings down the rain" for the third time
(in the evening prayer of the night of Simchat Torah) –
it then becomes three times, which constitutes a chazakah,
the blessing of children, life, and sustenance in abundance receives strengthening, force, and permanence.
In addition to this, there is the inner explanation of "He causes the wind to blow and brings down the rain":
"He causes the wind to blow" refers to the first wind,
and this is "and the spirit of G-d hovered over the face of the waters,"
and this refers to the spirit of Moshiach which preceded the world.
And afterwards, "He causes the wind to blow" is drawn into "and brings down the rain," from the term physicality,
that is, that the spirit and soul of Moshiach
("He causes the wind to blow")
is drawn and enclothed in a physical body,
as per the ruling of the Rambam that Moshiach is a flesh and blood [person] who is located in this physical world.
And this is the ultimate perfection of the future,
that there is drawn not only an elevation in spirituality,
but rather this is drawn and permeates also the physicality of the world.
And in addition to this, there is also the interpretation of "geshem" (rain),
that this refers to the Shem Mem Gimel
(the letters Shem Mem Gimel),
times of "and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of the seven days" according to the interpretation that "sevenfold" is seven times seven
(forty-nine),
(מ"ט),
and accordingly, the interpretation of "sevenfold as the light of the seven days" is –
forty-nine times the letter Zayin,
which is Shem Mem Gimel,
the letters Shem Mem Gimel.
And as the matter is explained in this*,
that this is like the light of the upper level becomes materialized,
for when light is drawn downward and becomes materialized, it is called by the name "geshem" (rain) etc.
And also according to this interpretation, it follows that "Who causes the rain to fall" is connected with the revelation of the upper level,
and as the revelation is drawn into materiality,
"geshem" (rain),
in accordance with the aforementioned interpretation,
that this refers to the clothing of the spirit of Mashiach in a physical body.
And one may also connect this with the simple interpretation of "Who causes the wind to blow and causes the rain to fall" –
for at the coming of our righteous Mashiach,
the spirit of Mashiach in a physical body,
will draw a perfection in the physicality of the entire world. For that which Mashiach is a soul in a physical body,
and that which the future revelation descends into the physicality of the world,
proves that the future revelation permeates and effects a perfection also in this physical world.
And based on this, one may explain the aforementioned promise "Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust",
and all the ushpizin and all the leaders of Israel among them:
Just as Mashiach is a soul in a body
(the spirit of Mashiach in a physical body),
so too will there be the resurrection of the dead,
that "awake" the dwellers of the dust,
and moreover –
"and sing".
And in this, they are called specifically with the title "dwellers of the dust". One must understand:
Why are they called with such a title,
which is seemingly a title of deficiency,
could one not have used a different title?
According to the above, this is understandable:
"Dwellers of the dust" indicates the refinement to the ultimate perfection,
also of the aspect of the lowest, than which there is no lower –
dust from the ground,
as explained in Torah Or and Torat Chayim on Parshat Bereishit in the explanation of the reason that the creation of the first man differed from the rest of the creations,
that he was created first "dust from the ground",
and only afterwards was "and He blew into his nostrils the breath of life",
because man must elevate the entire world from the lowest, than which there is no lower,
dust from the ground.
And this is also emphasized in that Mashiach will be a spirit and soul specifically in a physical body. And therefore it is also stated regarding those who will arise in the resurrection of the dead –
"Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust".
And when one stands on the night of Simchat Torah,
when one says "Who causes the wind to blow and causes the rain to fall" for the third time, which constitutes a chazakah (presumption) –
all these matters receive a strengthening and reinforcement from a chazakah.
And from Simchat Torah it is then drawn upon the entire year –
as discussed above,
that the month of Tishrei
(the letters of Rosh),
is a general month from which it is drawn upon the entire year. And in this itself –
the matters of Tishrei and Rosh Hashanah come out in revelation –
at the time of our joy,
and in a manner of absorption in inwardness –
on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
it is known the interpretation of Atzeret as a term of absorption,
and also –
the "oil" and "essence"
(as the language is stated in Chassidic discourses),
and Simchat Torah is the conclusion of all the festivals of the month of Tishrei
(afterwards there is also a Shabbat –
Shabbat Bereishit,
but the conclusion of the festivals is Simchat Torah),
and the conclusion includes all the festivals,
and from it it is then drawn upon the entire year.
The aforementioned discussion is also connected with the verses of "Atah Hareita" which are recited before the "Hakafot".
Before one proceeds to perform Hakafot with the Torah,
it is the custom of Israel, which is Torah, that one recites the seventeen verses from the Written Torah beginning with "Atah Hareita". And the matter in this is –
that one brings reasons for the joy of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah etc., like the verses of Kingships, Remembrances, and Shofarot.
That these seventeen verses in themselves are located in separate places in the Written Torah,
but since according to the custom of Israel
(which has become)
Torah, these verses were compiled and are recited in order and in one sequence,
and they have become a new entity of the seventeen verses recited before Hakafot –
it is understandable. That even though in their source these verses are located in separate places,
they have a connection in content between them,
and specifically in this order and sequence as they are recited before Hakafot.
In explaining these verses –
it has already been spoken about many times,
now we will speak only one point in brief.
One of the matters of "Hakafot" on Simchat Torah with a Torah scroll is –
in order to draw down Torah into the world:
As is known, that Torah in general
(with which Jews below rejoice on Simchat Torah)
"descended and went down through the hidden levels from level to level in the chain of descent of the worlds until it became clothed in physical things and matters of this world etc. and in combinations of physical letters in ink on the book etc."
And the effect of Torah in the world is even more emphasized during the time of Hakafot on Simchat Torah,
when one rejoices with a Torah scroll not as it is open and one can read and study from it,
and on the contrary –
with an open Torah scroll one may not dance,
because then one must be careful with the honor of the Torah scroll,
rather one rejoices with Torah specifically as it is wrapped in a mantle,
when it is evident,
not the study in Torah and the holiness of Torah in and of itself,
but rather how Torah is found in the world.
And the "Hakafot" themselves are performed three times, which constitutes a chazakah,
similar to how on the night of Simchat Torah there is a chazakah of saying "Mashiv HaRuach UMorid HaGeshem",
which also indicates the effect and drawing down into physicality,
"Geshem" (rain),
as above.
And before performing the "Hakafot", one recites the verses of "Atah Hareita" as reasons and proofs for the matter of drawing down Torah into the world. And in this itself –
in order from above to below,
beginning with the verse "Atah Hareita Lada'at Ki Hashem Hu HaElokim Ein Od Milvado",
then –
"LeOseh Nifla'ot Gedolot Levado Ki LeOlam Chasdo",
and then –
"Ein Kamocha VaElokim Adonai VeEin KeMa'asecha":
"Atah Hareita Lada'at Ki Hashem Hu HaElokim Ein Od Milvado":
It is known the explanation of the Alter Rebbe on this verse:
"Atah" (You) in the second person refers to the true "Atah",
Essence and Being. "Atah, You,
Essence of Ein Sof, blessed be He,
Hareita –
You revealed Yourself,
Lada'at –
that one should know You."
That is, this speaks about Essence and Being
("Atah"),
but not as Essence and Being is in itself,
rather "Hareita Lada'at",
He revealed Himself in order that one should know Him,
that is, there is another entity to whom "Hareita Lada'at" applies.
And this is the conclusion of the verse –
"Ein Od Milvado":
The difference between "Ein Od" and "Ein Od Milvado" is,
that "Ein Od" –
means that there is absolutely no other entity,
but "Ein Od Milvado" means that besides Him there is indeed no entity,
but together with "Atah"
(His Essence, may He be blessed)
there is another entity,
and a true entity which the Essence brought into being actual existence is through Havayah and Elokim,
but this comes from the power of the Essence] –
the existence of the world,
to which there is the "Atah Hareita Lada'at".
Where is this found in the revealed aspect? This is understood from Rashi at the beginning of his commentary on the Torah:
"Bereishit –
for the sake of the Torah etc. and for the sake of Israel etc." From this it is understood,
since Torah and Israel are a true entity,
and the world was created for their sake,
one must say that the world is a true entity.
And regarding this concerning "Atah Hareita Lada'at etc. Ein Od Milvado":
Seemingly, what relevance is it that there should be "Atah Hareita Lada'at",
that the Essence should reveal itself in order that one should know Him? Only because this speaks about a true entity,
therefore there was for this "Atah Hareita Lada'at",
that Essence and Being reveals itself to the true entity in order that it should be Lada'at.
It follows that from this verse there is a reason and a proof for the matter of performing "Hakafot" whose purpose is to draw down Torah into the world.
Then one continues with "LeOseh Nifla'ot Gedolot Levado etc.":
The first verse "Atah Hareita Lada'at etc." speaks from above to below –
that there is Essence,
"Atah",
and then one speaks about the world –
"Hareita Lada'at" to the true entity of the world,
and "Ein Od Milvado",
that together with "Atah" there is a true entity of the world.
That is, this speaks about how the world stands within the Essence.
In the second verse, he speaks from below to above,
that there is a world and there is found Essence,
i.e., not as the world stands within Essence
(as in the first verse),
but as Essence stands within the world:
The very thing that is said "to Him who performs great wonders" indicates that we speak here about a reality where there is order and limitation, and relative to this order and limitation there is a matter that is "wonders."
From this it is understood that we speak here not about His Essence, blessed be He, in and of itself,
for He is the "impossible of impossibilities,"
not connected to any orders and limitations,
consequently, regarding Him it is not applicable to say that there is a matter of wonders;
במילא איז ביי אים ניט שייך זאגן אז ס'איז דא אן ענין פון נפלאות;
when one says "great wonders," one must say that we speak here about a reality of a world where there is an order of nature that "do not cease,"
an order of beginning, middle, and end,
and relative to this order it is applicable to say that there is a matter of "wonders" and "great wonders,"
i.e., that there is a matter that does not begin from the beginning,
but it is a matter of wonders that begins in the middle or at the end of the order.
I.e., that we speak here primarily about the reality of the world where there is an order of nature of "do not cease,"
and there "wonders" and "great wonders" are drawn from His Essence, blessed be He,
as is known the explanation of "to Him who performs great wonders alone,"
that only He alone, blessed be He, knows about these wonders,
unlike the master of the miracle who does not recognize his miracle,
i.e., that only the true master of the miracle
(the Almighty Himself)
recognizes His miracle,
but not the master of the miracle below.
From this itself
(that "the master of the miracle does not recognize his miracle")
it is understood that these "great wonders" do not break nature,
rather the reality of nature remains in its force in the manner of "do not cease,"
but nevertheless, there itself great wonders are drawn from His Essence, blessed be He,
and such great wonders that no one can see them except the Almighty Himself.
That is,
as mentioned,
how Essence is drawn into the world.
But this is all how in the world miracles and great wonders are drawn from His Essence, blessed be He.
Then comes the third verse –
"There is none like You among the gods, my Lord, and there are no deeds like Yours" –
and there it speaks about how in the very nature of the world His Essence, blessed be He, is drawn:
"Elokim" refers to the matter of nature,
the angels that conduct with the way of nature, or
(also)
to "the Master of ability and the Master of all powers,"
the powers of nature.
And the name Ado-nai is more connected to nature and world,
not like the name Havayah which is from the language of was, is, and will be as one,
and this refers to above the way of nature.
And it is said that "there is none like You among the gods, my Lord,"
that even within the powers of nature and within the angels that conduct with nature –
"there is none like You." For also within the powers of nature is drawn the "impossible of impossibilities." And "there are no deeds like Yours" –
also in the making and deed
(nature)
that is very low, the power of the Essence is recognizable,
therefore "there are no deeds like Yours."
It follows that the first three verses of "Atah Horeta" speak about three levels, each lower than the other,
as it is possible to say lower regarding the levels –
i.e., levels in the matter of revelation:
In the first verse it speaks primarily about Essence and Being,
"You,"
which is above the entire matter of "encompassments" and world. Then it is said "You have been shown to know,"
that "You" has been revealed in order that He be known,
and revealed to a true reality,
"there is none besides Him,"
but together with "You" there is a reality and a true reality. Then it is already applicable to say the matter of "encompassments" that one makes and draws into the world.
But this is all how the world stands within Essence. Then comes the second verse "to Him who performs great wonders alone,"
which speaks about how Essence already stands within the world. And from this perspective, the "encompassments" are not merely a matter of encompassing,
rather they are drawn in actuality into the world.
But this is how it is drawn in the manner of miracles and great wonders. Then comes the third verse "there is none like You among the gods, my Lord, and there are no deeds like Yours,"
that Essence is drawn also within the nature of the world.
And this can also be connected with the aforementioned explanation of "Who causes the wind to blow and the rain to descend,"
for this refers to the investment of the spirit and soul of Mashiach in a physical body and physical matter.
Also, at the coming of our righteous Mashiach
(at its beginning)
the world will continue in its customary way,
and as it is written, "And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and foreigners shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers,"
that is, the service will be through natural means
(shepherds and farmers),
and there, in that very context, "Mashiach" is drawn down,
with all the perfection and superiority inherent in this.
And after the first three aforementioned verses, the rest of the verses follow,
until the conclusion and seal of the seventeen verses –
then it becomes "For from Zion shall go forth the Torah, and the word of the L-rd from Jerusalem,"
and afterwards it becomes "Father of mercy,"
which is a higher drawing down than "Father of compassion,"
and afterwards it becomes "And you shall spread forth to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south,"
in the true and complete redemption, speedily in our actual days, with joy and a good heart.
His Holy Honor, our Rebbe, the Rebbe Shlita, began to sing "Ufaratzta." In the middle of the melody, His Holy Honor, our Rebbe, the Rebbe Shlita, instructed several people to say "L'Chaim" over a full cup.
Afterwards, he said:
Continuing from what was stated above
(section 1)
(ס"א)
that on Simchat Torah there are several customs that nullify the halachah and the order as it is conducted throughout the entire year –
it is thus: just as throughout the year the order is that first one takes empty vessels and afterwards one fills them
(with Torah and mitzvot, etc.) –
on Simchat Torah there must be a reversed order:
just as there are vessels full of wine that are still full,
or half full,
or a quarter full, etc. –
one should empty them!
[His Holy Honor, our Rebbe, the Rebbe Shlita, said "L'Chaim" over his cup and drank the entire cup.
Afterwards, in the middle of the melody –
His Holy Honor, our Rebbe, the Rebbe Shlita, took his cup in his holy hand and turned it over onto its mouth,
its rim upward and its mouth downward,
and showed it to the entire audience (on all sides) that they should do likewise. And afterwards, he intensified the singing with his holy hand while holding the inverted cup.
After the melody, His Holy Honor, our Rebbe, the Rebbe Shlita, wished to speak,
but there was a great noise,
and they called out several times "Sha, be still." After the noise subsided –
His Holy Honor, our Rebbe, the Rebbe Shlita, said:]
In cheder, they would tell, regarding wit, a parable about a king
(an emperor),
for one had never seen an emperor,
so they gave a parable about a father and a son,
where, while the father sleeps, the son goes around and says:
Sha, sha, be still,
the father is sleeping!
From this one understands that when it concerns a minister,
who has many servants,
and all the servants wish to demonstrate that they are guarding the minister,
then, while the minister sleeps,
all his servants go around and say:
Sha, sha, be still,
the minister is sleeping!
From this one understands regarding a king,
for he is indeed a king over all the inhabitants of the country –
then, while the king sleeps,
all the inhabitants of the country go around,
who all wish to show their honor to the king,
and they shout:
Sha, sha, be still,
the king is sleeping!
One can imagine how quiet it becomes!...
If you wish to shout "Sha, be still" –
hold yourself until tomorrow morning when the king will arise, and shout then!
The matter of turning over the cups and the vessels has a source in the revealed part of Torah
(like everything):
In the drawing of the Menorah that the Rambam himself drew in his own handwriting, he depicted that the goblets were like an inverted cup,
the wide part of the goblet
(its mouth)
towards the bottom of the Menorah and the narrow part
(its rim)
at the top!
The explanation for this was once explained:
The windows of the Holy Temple were made in the manner of "beveled, enclosed,"
"narrow on the inside and widening outward –
so that the light should go out from the Sanctuary to illuminate the world,"
because the function of the lamps of the Menorah is to be lamps to give light,
and to illuminate the entire world.
And based on this, one can also explain regarding the goblets of the Menorah:
The Bachya explains the allusion in the goblets of the Menorah. A goblet is a "vessel that has a receptacle and it gives drink and satiates,"
and this alludes to the "spheres that receive the supernal powers and influence power into the lower world."
Therefore, the goblets were with their mouths downward and their rims upward,
like an inverted cup:
When it concerns receiving –
one must have a vessel and cup whose mouth is upward and its rim downward.
When it is, however, about influencing outside of oneself –
the cup must be overturned,
its mouth downward and its base upward. And because the goblets allude to the concept of "giving drink and saturating,"
to influence outside of oneself –
therefore they were overturned,
their mouth downward and their base upward,
just as the entirety of the menorah is in order to illuminate the world,
which is why the windows of the Temple were "narrow on the inside and wide on the outside."
And therefore they now also turned over the cup –
because the Nasi of our generation intended that all should be "lamps to illuminate,"
and for this it is required that there be windows "narrow on the inside and wide on the outside,"
and goblets whose mouth is downward and whose base is upward.
When it is about oneself –
then one must have a cup that stands with its base downward and its mouth upward,
for only then can one pour wine into it and afterwards drink it,
and only through this can there be in him joy that breaks boundaries. But this is all regarding oneself;
און דוקא דורך דעם קען ביי אים ווערן שמחה וואס איז פורץ גדר. אבער דאס איז אלץ בנוגע צו זיך;
When it is, however, about being "lamps to illuminate" and about influencing others –
then one must overturn the cup,
in order that the light should shine to others.
And may it be His will that this should be a preparation for "and He will be for you an eternal light,"
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days, literally.
[Afterwards he said:
Those who need to recite the after-blessing,
should now recite the after-blessing.
And before that, one should announce regarding the order that will now be.
After they announced about the order and that everyone should go out quickly in order to arrange the synagogue for the hakafot etc.,
His Holy Honor the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, said:
With alacrity –
after the after-blessing.
Before the after-blessing, His Holy Honor the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, placed his cup on its mouth as above.
Before his departure, he began to play the melody of the hakafot of his father, of blessed memory].
