English translation 1
It is a farbrengen on Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Menachem-Av,
It is a farbrengen on Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Menachem-Av,
as it is said in the text of the blessing of the month.
And it is understood that in addition to that which on every Shabbat Mevarchim there must be a special service,
it must be with greater strength and vigor on Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Menachem-Av,
because the month contains within itself a most elevated matter,
as will be explained below.
The explanation of this:
When a particular Shabbat Mevarchim comes,
or in general a particular time,
then that Shabbat Mevarchim
(or that particular time)
is the "gate" through which all other matters ascend –
as explained in the writings of the AriZal1,
brought in Chassidus2,
regarding the matter of the "gate",
as it is written3 "This is the gate to Hashem, the righteous shall enter through it",
that for different people there are specific "gates" through which all other matters ascend.
That is to say:
Although on one hand this is only a "gate",
seemingly merely a secondary matter relative to those who enter through that "gate".
That is, since there is an intervening or separating thing between one place and a second place,
there is a "gate" through which one goes from the first place to the second place,
consequently the "gate" is seemingly only secondary to those who "shall enter through it",
and also secondary to the place from which one comes or to which one goes,
only a mediator between them –
nevertheless,
together with this,
it is specifically through this "gate" that "shall enter through it" can be,
and specifically through this "gate" all matters ascend.
To the extent that even "the righteous shall enter through it". Seemingly:
By virtue of the merit of their righteousness and the merit of the many
(which exists with the righteous) etc.,
this alone should have been sufficient that there be "shall enter through it" –
nevertheless we see that specifically "This is the gate to Hashem" that "the righteous shall enter through it",
even the righteous must come specifically to this gate
(for whatever reason,
this is not the place to elaborate on this).
And the matter of this:
It is explained in the Zohar4 that "This is the gate to Hashem" refers to fear of Hashem,
the Sefirah of Malchus,
to which all,
even the righteous,
must come,
in order that there be "shall enter through it".
And in addition to this there is the interpretation of "This is the gate to Hashem":
Every time has its specific service,
"each day does its work"5. And when a particular time comes –
then that time and the service in this time is the "gate" through which all other matters ascend.
As this is also according to the revealed [Torah]:
A frequent [offering] and a non-frequent [offering],
the frequent takes precedence,
and therefore "the daily offerings precede the additional offerings"6 because by virtue of frequency in time, that becomes the "gate" and primary through which all other matters in this time ascend,
therefore it comes first.
That is to say:
Because the daily offering is more frequent than the other offerings every day
(since one offers the daily offering every day)
so that even when one offers additional offerings on this day,
even additional offerings,
which are "holier" than the daily offerings,
as their name "additional offerings" indicates an addition upon
(more than)
the daily offering,
to the extent that even if it is Yom Kippur when the Kohen Gadol burns the incense in the innermost [chamber] in the Holy of Holies,
than which there is nothing higher,
it is certainly higher than the daily offering on this day –
Nevertheless, by virtue of the frequency of the daily offering,
the frequent takes precedence,
and "nothing should precede the arrangement of the morning daily offering"
(it is incumbent to begin all offerings)7,
and along with this one must also know that "nothing should be delayed after the afternoon daily offering",
"it is incumbent to complete all the offerings"8,
and through this one can then offer all the other offerings,
including also the burning of the incense on Yom Kippur in the innermost [chamber] –
because the daily offering
(which is frequent in time)
is the "gate" through which all other matters ascend,
even matters that are higher than the daily offering in their essence.
This is similar to what was said above regarding "This is the gate to Hashem, the righteous shall enter through it",
that this is the "gate" through which all other matters ascend,
even the righteous who are higher than this "gate" in their essence.
And likewise regarding the time of Shabbat Mevarchim the month
(like every particular time,
where each day does its work):
On Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh, this is the "gate" through which all the days of the month ascend and are blessed.
That is, even though the month includes lofty days,
which can even be higher than the day of Shabbat Mevarchim –
the day of Rosh Chodesh,
and the day when "the moon stands in its fullness"9,
to the extent that it can also be a month that includes the most lofty holy days like Yom Kippur and the like –
nevertheless, on Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh,
Shabbat Mevarchim is the "gate" through which all the days of the month ascend,
therefore Shabbat Mevarchim has the power to bless and give strength to the service throughout all the days of the month,
beginning from Shabbat itself, which is "sanctified and established"10
(which comes before the service of the children of Israel),
and in addition to this –
through the service of the children of Israel on this Shabbat, in that they bless the month.
On Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh itself, each Shabbat Mevarchim has a unique aspect corresponding to the particular month it blesses,
and in this unique aspect consists the "gate" of that day through which all the other matters ascend.
The unique aspect of Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh Menachem-Av,
the "gate" of this Shabbat Mevarchim through which all the other matters ascend –
one need not seek
(as with other months),
because it is explicit in its name –
"Menachem-Av":
"מנחם-אב":
The name of the month according to the names of the months that "came up with them from Babylon"11 is "Av"12.
And according to the principle that "the custom of Israel is Torah"13 –
they added also the word "Menachem",
so that it should be called "Menachem-Av",
as it is called in the blessing of the month of this month14.
And based on this, one immediately sees the superiority and uniqueness of this month,
and of Shabbat Mevarchim of this month –
that then there is the aspect of "Menachem Av",
that there is consolation for all matters of exile,
as will be explained.
And this addition of "Menachem" to the name of the month "Av"
(that there is consolation for the matter of exile)
also contains within it the superiority
(relative to the name "Av" by itself)
of beloved15 and stringent16 –
the words of the Scribes are more beloved than the words of the Torah,
and especially since this also has the force of "the custom of Israel is Torah".
And one may add to this,
that the entire concept of Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh comes from the side of exile,
and consequently it is particularly connected with "Menachem":
At the time when they would sanctify based on sighting, they could not know which Shabbat was before Rosh Chodesh,
because they could not know which day would be Rosh Chodesh,
not only that they did not actually know,
but it was impossible to know –
because this was dependent on when the witnesses would come,
and what they would say, and whether the court would accept them
(and especially according to the view of the poskim17 that even later, acceptance of testimony could occur).
Specifically during the time of exile,
and then itself –
in the double and multiplied darkness of exile
[because even at the beginning of the exile they still sanctified based on sighting,
when the Sanhedrin (were) in Yavneh, etc.18),
when they stopped sanctifying based on sighting,
but only based on the calculation –
they could know in advance when Rosh Chodesh would be. Only then did they institute that on the Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh,
on the day of assembly
(when all Jews gather together in the synagogue),
they should bless the month19.
And even though this is seemingly from an undesirable matter
(the time of exile) –
there is in this a desirable matter:
Through this it comes out that even before Rosh Chodesh one can prepare for it and bless Rosh Chodesh with an additional blessing more than Rosh Chodesh has by itself!
And just as the general concept of Shabbat Mevarchim came about during the time
(and because of the matter)
of exile –
similarly, the custom of Israel to bless the month of Av with the name "Menachem-Av" came about during the time of exile
(after the destruction of the Holy Temple).
Even though it is not explicitly stated that before the destruction they did not call the month by the name Menachem-Av –
it need not be stated explicitly,
it is understood simply by itself,
because before the destruction of the Holy Temple
(in the month of Av)
there was nothing for which one would need to give "Menachem" (consolation);
איז ניט געווען אויף וואס מ'זאל דארפן "מנחם" זיין;
only after the destruction of the Holy Temple in the month of Av, when one needs to console over the destruction and exile that occurred in this month –
then began the custom of Israel to call the month Menachem-Av.
Based on this, one will understand the superiority of Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Menachem-Av:
The inner meaning of "Menachem-Av" is,
as stated:
one consoles [oneself] over the undesirable matters of destruction and exile that occurred in the month of Av.
And according to the well-known principle that a descent is for the sake of an ascent, it is understood,
that through this matter of "Menachem-Av",
consolation over the undesirable matters –
there comes an elevation greater than what was before the descent in the month of Av. And on the contrary:
the intention of the entire descent is in order to reach the most elevated ascent. If through the descent one would not reach a more elevated ascent
(than before the descent) –
why would one need the entire descent?!
Rather, certainly it is in order that it should bring about a more elevated ascent.
And in the language of our Sages, of blessed memory,20 on the doubled expression of the verse,21 "Comfort, comfort My people" –
"They were struck with a double portion, etc., and they are comforted with a double portion."
And according to the aforementioned principle
(a descent for the sake of an ascent)
one can explain in this a novel idea:
It is not only the simple explanation that the double comfort is measure for measure precisely as they were struck with a double portion,
rather, the double comfort is double also relative to the double portion with which they were struck,
i.e., four times as much –
because if the comfort is only double corresponding to the double portion with which they were struck,
then what is the novelty that came about through the double portion with which they were struck? One must say that through the double portion with which they were struck there came –
a descent for the sake of an ascent –
a comfort and ascent to a level more elevated than what was before they were struck with a double portion,
through the fact that the comfort is double relative to the double portion of the striking,
i.e., four times higher than what was before the descent!
Regarding this matter –
that specifically through the descent there comes a more elevated ascent –
this is not, however, the explanation that one agrees, Heaven forbid, to the matter of exile;
איז אבער ניט דער פירוש אז מ'איז מסכים ח"ו אויף דעם ענין פון גלות;
rather, certainly after all the elevations that emerge through the descent of exile –
Jews cry out "Until when?",
and one forgoes all these elevations,
as long as [we can] leave exile a moment earlier!
Just as it was with the Jews in the Egyptian exile –
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said22:
"The Holy One, blessed be He, said to Moshe: 'Please, go and say to the Jewish people: Please, request from Egypt vessels of silver and vessels of gold,
so that that righteous one
(Avraham)
should not say [that] "They will enslave them and oppress them"23 was fulfilled in them,
but "And afterwards they will go out with great wealth" was not fulfilled in them.' They said to him:
'If only we ourselves could go out,
a parable to a person who was imprisoned in a jail and people said to him: "Tomorrow we will take you out of the jail and give you much money,"
and he says to them: "Please, take me out today and I ask for nothing!"'"
And this very claim of the Jews –
that the Jews cried out "Until when?",
they forgo the "And afterwards they will go out with great wealth"24 and the "They will return here"25 as long as they leave exile a moment earlier –
remained recorded in the Oral Torah,
Torah from the word "teaching",26
as a teaching for all generations.
The lesson and teaching from this:
It is one of the most difficult things to effect upon a person,
and especially upon a businessman,
that when a specific time comes,
in this case –
"The Three Weeks" and the month of Menachem-Av –
he should tear himself away from the business affairs in which he is immersed,
and he should feel that now is "The Three Weeks",
Because according to the Torah, his business dealings must be with faith,27
and the simple explanation of this is –
in addition to the explanation that he "believes in the Life of the worlds and sows"28 –
that he simply immerses himself in the business and conducts it with faith. For since according to the Torah, "And Hashem your G-d will bless you in all that you do,"29
there must be with him the "doing" in a natural way. Therefore, he conducts his business dealings with faith. It is true that after he makes the vessel through natural doing,
"The blessing of Hashem enriches,"30
but with him there must be the "you shall do",
he must engage in it,
and in a manner of business with faith.
Not like those who are "extreme" G-d-fearing
(so to speak)
and say that they will do nothing at all. They rely entirely on the One Above!
He does not even want to do an action like the Baal Shem Tov did –
as is known the story about the Baal Shem Tov,
that once when he needed something,
he went into the street and knocked on someone's shop and immediately left. They asked him –
why did he leave after knocking on the shop,
he should have waited until that person would come out and ask him what do you want,
and the Baal Shem Tov would have told him what he wants. Chassidim relate that the Baal Shem Tov answered:
since it must be the "in all that you do",
the natural vessel for the blessing of G-d,
he did an action –
knocked on the shop and left,
and the Almighty will then continue the matter which he needs!
This is an action according to the level of the Baal Shem Tov,
according to his level he lowered himself from his status and his situation and went out into the street and knocked on the shop of a Jew,
or a non-Jew
(I do not know if one knows exactly whether this was a Jew or a non-Jew),
and this is a sufficient vessel for drawing down the blessing of G-d.
But there are those who do not even want to do such an action...!
One tells them:
If he is a businessman, according to Torah there must be by him business in his commerce and trade with faith, and sometimes he needs to travel to other places,
like those who are from the group of Zevulun,
that "Zevulun dwells at the shore of the sea and goes out for merchandise in ships and profits",
and he needs to have dealings with the merchants of Lud
(in the language of the Gemara)
and the like –
which simply includes also non-Jews. There must be the "in all that you do",
he must do an action,
and an action in its simple sense
[by Yissachar one demands action in Torah,
i.e., to raise the discussion in accordance with the halachah *31,
but by Zevulun one demands action in its simple sense),
and not only an action,
but involvement in this with faith.
One only demands of him that this should be "without a heart and a heart" –
he should indeed be involved in his commerce and trade with faith,
but this should be only "the toil of your hands",
business with hand and foot specifically,
but not toil of the heart,
and certainly not toil of the mind and intellect,
for his toil of the heart and intellect must be in Torah and mitzvos.
But the simple meaning is not that he should do nothing at all in his business,
and one demands that he should only say Tehillim and learn Torah,
and merely leave the door open,
and this should be the only vessel and garment in the way of nature for "and the L-rd your G-d will bless you". This is indeed not negated,
but together with this, "many did...
like Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and it did not succeed in their hand",
and the way of "many" is like Rabbi Yishmael,
i.e., the order of service of "conduct yourself with them in the way of the world".
i.e., the order for those who are not accustomed to miracles
(like Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai)
is –
that there must be involvement in commerce and trade with faith,
and not only one minute,
but he must be occupied in this.
Indeed "without a heart and a heart",
only toil with his hand and foot,
not with his heart and mind,
but toil with his hand and foot must be according to the Shulchan Aruch.
And since a businessman must according to Torah be occupied in his commerce and trade with faith –
it is among the most difficult things to effect upon him that when a specific time comes, Shabbos,
the Three Weeks and the like,
he should tear himself away from that which his business was all the previous days,
and now feel that it is Shabbos or the Three Weeks and the like.
Because according to Torah there are six weekdays and only one day is Shabbos,
and during the six weekdays he had to do with gentiles,
and consequently this became his habit,
became nature
(secondary,
or nature simply),
and consequently also when he departs from the gentiles he still has a connection with gentileness –
it is then very difficult that when Shabbos comes he should tear himself away from this and feel that it is Shabbos,
or the Three Weeks and the like.
And in particular, when there are those whose "labor of your hands" is not only with their hand and foot,
but this also mixes in with the heart,
that he lies in it with his heart,
one heart,
and sometimes "heart and heart"
(two hearts),
instead of what it should be "without heart and heart",
and with his intellect and will and desire –
consequently it is even more difficult to tear oneself away from it and to feel that now is "between the straits".
And this is not because he has provoked his evil inclination upon himself,
but rather so has the Most High established according to Torah,
that in the time of exile he must occupy himself with his business dealings in faith,
and his habit which has become his nature is that he is a businessman who lies in his businesses,
and as a result of his toil in his business he has all matters,
children, life, sustenance, profit, and in all of them profit and all physical blessings. Indeed, truly –
he believes that "the blessing of the L-rd enriches",
but together with this he knows that according to Torah his "in all that you do" must be,
and specifically through this the blessing of the L-rd is drawn.
Therefore it is very difficult to effect upon him that he should tear himself away from his habit which has become nature,
and feel that now is "between the straits".
Nevertheless, one says to a Jew:
Indeed, truly that according to Torah he must be occupied with his business dealings in faith,
and have to do with the merchants of Lud,
also with non-Jews –
he must, however, know that this is only in externality,
with his hands and feet,
but his inwardness and essential matter,
with his heart and intellect he must lie in Torah and commandments.
That is, that also how his soul is found here below,
not only as it is in the aspect of "pure is she" but also in the aspect of "You created her, You formed her, You breathed her into me" until "and You guard her within me",
in physical doing –
the essence and inwardness of her matter is –
holiness and Torah and commandments and not the matters of business, heaven forbid.
He must indeed occupy himself with his business dealings in faith also with non-Jews,
and know that through his toil in this he receives the blessing of the L-rd in children, life, sustenance, profit, and in all of them profit,
and if he has not received it in completeness on the eve of Shabbat –
he will certainly receive it at the conclusion of Shabbat,
because the Most High is the nature of the good and the nature of the good is to do good:
Together with this he must, however, know that this is not his essence and inwardness,
but rather his essence in which he must lie in the inwardness of his heart and intellect is –
Torah and commandments.
And therefore,
not looking at that which he is lying and is accustomed to matters of commerce,
and out of joy and goodness of heart knowing that from this he receives children, life, sustenance, profit –
when "between the straits" comes he must feel that his essence and inwardness is,
that now is "between the straits".
And on the contrary:
The essential matter of receiving physical blessings
(children, life, and sustenance)
from the Most High through a vessel and garment in the way of nature of business and commerce in physical matters
(not the essence of a Jew)
is from the aspect of exile
(which is connected with "between the straits"):
In the time of the Temple the physical blessings were not so connected with physical business and commerce,
rather then this came primarily through the influence of the Holy Temple,
from which light goes forth to the entire world
(also outside the Land),
through the service of the offerings in the Holy Temple which were brought from the money of the chamber collection which was taken from the half-shekel of all Jews,
also from the Jews outside the Land.
But in the time of exile the primary physical blessing comes through the vessel and garment of business in matters of commerce.
A Jew must know also in the time of exile,
that his essence and inwardness is not the business and commerce,
but rather –
holiness and Torah and commandments.
And therefore when "between the straits" comes he must feel that now is "between the straits",
also when Shabbat comes,
because also then one sees the influence of "between the straits" in that one then recites a haftarah not from the matters of the portion,
but rather connected with "between the straits".
A question arises:
What place does it have to be an emissary to remind Jews at a gathering:
Listen –
it is "between the straits"! And thereby make Jews sad?!
One must know that it is "between the straits" –
there is on this a Shulchan Aruch,
and certainly every Jew has
(or can have)
the Shulchan Aruch,
where the laws connected with "between the straits" are stated,
and Jews are in a presumptive state of fitness that they certainly study the halachot during the time of "between the straits",
just as one studies the laws of the festival on the festival –
so what need is there to add to this and speak about it at a farbrengen,
is it not enough what is written in the Shulchan Aruch?
But then –
one needs an additional messenger to awaken Jews regarding "between the straits" –
may the Merciful One save us from such a messenger...
So the answer to this is:
According to the enactment of his holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, one must farbreng on every Shabbat Mevarchim,
including Shabbat Mevarchim Menachem Av. And it is understood that on this particular Shabbat Mevarchim when one farbrengs,
one must first and foremost speak about the matter of the day,
in the matter at hand –
about "between the straits" and the month of Menachem Av.
But along with this one has immediately the rescue
(as above at length) –
that it is Shabbat Mevarchim Menachem Av
(as it is called according to the custom of Israel),
that is, one consoles Jews with a double consolation for the descent of "between the straits",
and such a consolation that is double from the "smote with a double blow",
for a descent is for the purpose of an ascent:
the entire intention of the descent in "between the straits" is so that from it should come forth an ascent incomparably higher
(than before the descent).
Consequently, it is understood that when one reminds a Jew,
that regardless of the fact that he is involved in matters of commerce,
he must know that now it is "between the straits" –
the intention in this is not, heaven forbid, to place him in a state of sadness,
but on the contrary –
in order to awaken him,
that he should know that the intention of the great descent is so that there should be an ascent incomparably higher.
And therefore this is expressed in the service of man –
that the Jew should know,
that the entire intention of the time of "between the straits" is that he should utilize it to do matters of joy in permitted ways
(as understood).
And as is known the explanation that is repeated from the Munkatcher *42 in the saying of our sages "when Av enters we diminish in joy" –
that how does one diminish in matters of Av,
through the matter of joy!
Joy in permitted ways during "between the straits" –
first and foremost through "the precepts of the Lord are upright, rejoicing the heart" –
the study of Torah,
and the fulfillment of the commandments
(the simple explanation of "the precepts of the Lord").
And likewise prayer which must also be "out of joy of a mitzvah",
as the Alter Rebbe ruled in his Shulchan Aruch that one must stand to pray "out of joy of a mitzvah, such as words of consolation of Torah etc.",
and afterwards he adds that "one does not stand to pray etc. except out of a settled halachah etc.,
and it is also called a joy of a mitzvah, as it is said 'the precepts of the Lord are upright, rejoicing the heart'".
That is, simply,
one should utilize the time of "between the straits" to increase in the study of Torah and the fulfillment of the commandments with full vigor,
knowing that this is the intention of the descent –
one should attain a most elevated ascent,
which this
(fulfillment of Torah and commandments with joy and vigor)
is not only permitted during the time of "between the straits",
but so it must be then.
From this it is also understood,
that in the days of "between the straits" one must utilize every opportunity that is permitted to make a farbrengen and through this increase in joy and vigor during these days,
and especially on Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Menachem Av,
when one has a directive and command from his holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to make a farbrengen,
for in addition to that which through an increase in Torah and commandments
("the precepts of the Lord are upright, rejoicing the heart")
in general one effects during this time an increase in joy in a permitted manner –
it is especially effected through a farbrengen of Jews. And it is understood that this does not mean that one should pinch one's own cheeks and make them red in order to pretend that one is in joy,
but one should truly be in joy in truth and in completeness,
And in addition to this, this is
(a farbrengen)
a cause of joy above until in Atzmus and whatness,
as is known the word of the Alter Rebbe regarding what a Chassidic farbrengen accomplishes,
as already printed and with an explanation understandable to all,
as a matter equal for every soul,
meaning without distinction of which level his soul is,
whether a soul of a high level,
or in the aspect of nefesh d’nefesh d’malchus d’asiyah
(in the well-known language of the Tanya) –
this is a matter equal for every soul of his,
from the highest level until the lowest level in the soul.
And through the addition in joy,
by means of the study of Torah and the fulfillment of the commandments and a farbrengen,
one brings about the double consolation,
and especially since in addition to the matter of joy which exists from the side of these days by means of Torah, commandments, etc. in the usual manner,
and on this Shabbat from the aspect of “it is sanctified and stands” –
a Jew adds from his own,
the completeness of “a person desires his own kav more than nine kav of his fellow.”
Until that with the help of Heaven, through adding in joy even before the Nine Days,
one should also add to his own kav
(by means of his own service),
that the Nine Days should become “nine kav of his fellow.” Nine kav of the Holy One, blessed be He, which He gives and draws down to Jews,
and in a manner that the recipient should be able to receive it,
meaning an influence in goodness that is seen and revealed below ten handbreadths –
that instead of them being nine days of disfavor,
these days will be transformed “to joy and to gladness and to festive occasions,”
and speedily in our days, literally.
In addition to this general matter of the Shabbat of blessing Menachem Av,
there is in this a special matter in the determination of this year –
that it occurs on the Shabbat of Parshat Masei.
Sometimes Parshat Masei is connected with Parshat Matot,
and as discussed many times, then they are not like two separate portions that have come together,
but rather they become one portion,
therefore only seven aliyot are read
(not ten aliyot),
and the fourth portion of the portion includes
(according to our custom)
the end of Parshat Matot and the beginning of Parshat Masei,
with one blessing before it and one blessing after it.
And as discussed many times, the matter of Parshat Matot and Masei together –
that “Matot” indicates a matter of the greatest, immovable strength.
In contrast, “Masei” indicates the exact opposite –
that not only does one not stand in one place with strength,
but one keeps traveling,
changes. And in the service of man, both movements must exist,
as explained at length.
Since sometimes Parshat Masei occurs separately from Parshat Matot,
as in the determination of this year,
it is according to the known principle that everything is precise,
especially in the determination of the days of the year which is according to Torah –
it is understood that in this year the lesson of Parshat Masei is emphasized specifically,
not connected with Parshat Matot
(the matter of strength).
Meaning a lesson that one must only keep traveling.
One must understand:
What is the matter in this matter of “Masei” specifically –
and the matter that one must only keep traveling. And there is entirely no emphasis on a matter of standing in one place with strength
(“Matot”).
One will understand this by prefacing a similar question regarding the entirety of the name of the portion:
After each of the journeys
(“and they journeyed”)
there was an encampment
(“and they encamped”),
as related in our portion –
so why is the name of the portion only “Masei,”
emphasizing only the matter of the journeys and not of the encampments? And especially since the conclusion of all the journeys is with an encampment –
“and they encamped by the Jordan from Beit HaYeshimot etc.,”
and not regarding the journey from there into the Holy Land!
Simply, the reason for the name of the portion “Masei” is
because the portion begins this way –
“These are the journeys of the children of Israel”
(like all names of the portions which are one of the words at the beginning of the portion);
(ווי אלע שמות הפרשיות וואס זיינען איינע פון די ווערטער בתחלת הפרשה);
but this only transfers the question from the name of the portion to the verse:
since after every journey there was an encampment,
and in the portion it tells about both, why does the verse begin with “These are the journeys of the children of Israel,”
and not with “These are the journeys and encampments of the children of Israel”?
Furthermore:
Rashi at the beginning of the portion brings the explanation “Why were these journeys written” –
“A parable of a king whose son was ill and he took him to a distant place to heal him,
when they were returning, his father began to count all the journeys,
he said to him: here we slept,
here we were cold,
here you had a headache, etc.”
And simply, the stone [matter] that all the occurrences occur not during the journeys,
but during the encampments,
when Jews were in a specific place –
it strengthens even more the question:
Since here it is relevant to bring out what happened with the Jews,
for good and for the opposite,
during the encampments –
why is only "these are the journeys" emphasized and not the encampments?
And particularly according to the inner dimension of the matters
(not the innermost of the inner dimension,
but the inner dimension of the revealed):
In the desert, the Jews went with the Mishkan. But during the journeys, the Mishkan was not set up, rather it lay upon the wagons,
in contrast to during the encampments, when they would establish the Mishkan each time. Consequently, it turns out that specifically during the encampments was the primary matter of the Mishkan,
which is a primary matter among Jews.
And particularly according to the words of the Gemara on the verse "they shall encamp" –
"it is as if they are fixed"
(even though the encampment was only temporary),
in contrast, the journeys are simply not a matter of permanence,
because one is traveling.
And according to this, it is entirely not understood why the verse emphasizes precisely the opposite:
It begins with "these are the journeys",
and does not mention at all about the encampments,
whose matter is seemingly the main thing?!
Even if for some reason the verse needs to mention "journeys",
the verse should have at least begun "these are the journeys and encampments".
Nevertheless, we see that here only the matter of "journeys" is emphasized.
And this is similar to the aforementioned question regarding the study and instruction of the entirety of Parshat Masei when it does not coincide with Parshat Matot:
What is the lesson from this, that there is only the matter of "Masei" without the matter of "Matot"
(strength,
encampments)?
Thus, from all this it is proven to say that there is necessarily a virtue in "Masei" alone,
and from this there must be a lesson.
And just like all matters of the Torah which is "an inheritance of the congregation of Jacob",
this must be understandable to each person,
also for a simple person. And particularly when one stands in the month of redemption
(the month of Tammuz),
about which the master of the redemption wrote that "not only me did the Holy One, blessed be He, redeem on the twelfth of Tammuz,
but also all who love our holy Torah,
observers of the commandments,
and also whoever is called by the name Israel."
Thus, the lesson from this is –
in both extremes:
Even when a Jew stands very low,
on the lowest level beneath which there is no lower –
he should not fall into despair,
because this is not his place,
for with him there must be "journeys":
He must travel away from there. And not only does he travel from there to another station,
and there he remains standing,
rather "journeys" in the plural –
he must travel further to a second station. And also there he should not stop –
because then it is not "journeys",
rather he must keep traveling higher and higher!
He could argue –
he forgoes all matters,
as long as he gets away from his lowest level. They tell him that this is not enough,
rather "journeys" in the plural –
he must keep traveling without cessation,
and never rest.
And regarding this, there is also a lesson for the greatest of the great:
He could think,
since he is a "big shot",
a Rosh Yeshiva,
he has under him so much Torah and commandments and good deeds and advocates etc.,
so that one points with his finger and says "this" –
here he gave this one a donation,
this one an act of kindness,
this one good advice,
a matter of love of Israel,
which is "the entire Torah, and the rest is its explanation, go and learn" –
he no longer needs to "travel",
because he already has everything
(in his opinion).
He has children, life, and sustenance, and in all of them he has prosperity in spirituality and in physicality –
so what does he lack? And he constantly thanks the Almighty for this,
as our Sages said on the verse "every soul shall praise God",
"for every breath that a person breathes, he must praise the Creator" –
so what more elevation does he need?!
Upon this comes the instruction of "Masei" –
even from his elevated level he must depart and be elevated higher. If he thinks that only one journey is sufficient,
he is told "Masei" in the plural,
that one journey is not sufficient,
rather it must be "Masei" in the plural. If he thinks that he will travel two stations and remain standing there,
this is however not "Masei",
for he is resting –
he must constantly keep traveling.
And it is understood that it is more difficult to effect this with a scholar,
an intellectual and worker, than with a simple person. The scholar etc. is at an elevated level,
he can convince himself that he no longer needs to be elevated,
unlike a simple person,
consequently it is much more difficult to effect upon this great one the matter of "Masei",
all the more so if one must effect upon him not only that he should admit with his lips that he needs to be elevated,
but also in his intellect,
until in the feeling of the heart, until,
and it is the main thing –
in actual deed,
that he should keep "Masei",
be elevated higher and higher. And so too is the instruction for the simplest of the simple,
as mentioned above.
He asks –
both the simplest of the simple and the greatest of the great –
whether this means that he must keep traveling without cease,
and he will never be able to rest,
he wants to know whether he will be able to rest? He is told –
indeed! He must keep traveling and will never rest –
because he travels until the Ein Sof,
to Atzmus U'Mahus!
He must constantly keep traveling in the forty-two journeys in the desert,
until one arrives at Yarden Yericho,
the matter of Moshiach Tzidkeinu,
"Moriach V'Dayin" *64 –
the private redemption until the general redemption,
And afterwards one must further travel from Yarden Yericho to the Holy Land,
"a good and spacious land",
and there itself –
there must also be constant ascents,
because in the Land of Israel is "this is the gate of heaven",
through which the prayers ascend heavenward,
which "heaven" includes also "the heavens of the heavens",
and furthermore there is here the elevation of "even this house" can contain You with ease,
as it is written "the heavens and the heavens of the heavens cannot contain You, even this house",
that the Holy Temple in the Land of Israel
("this is the gate of heaven")
is a vessel for Elokus,
until Atzmus U'Mahus,
consequently ascents until Ein Sof are always applicable in it.
And this matter is also present in exile outside the Land
(in the desert when one travels in the forty-two journeys) –
as the law is,
that during prayer outside the Land "he should turn his face toward the Land of Israel..
and he should also intend toward Jerusalem and toward the Temple and toward the Holy of Holies"
(because "this is the gate of heaven" through which all prayers ascend heavenward).
One sees from this that while being outside the Land one must have the movement to turn and draw toward the Land of Israel and Jerusalem and the Holy Temple and the Holy of Holies,
until that this must also permeate in physicality,
that "he should turn his face toward the Land of Israel etc." Seemingly:
"Rachmana Liba Ba'i" –
so what does it matter where he turns his nose?!
Nevertheless it is said that indeed "Rachmana Liba Ba'i",
but together with this it must also penetrate the physicality of the person and the body,
that he must turn with his physical body toward the Land of Israel and Jerusalem and the Holy Temple and the Holy of Holies.
One sees that even while being outside the Land in the time of exile there must be "Masei" and one must draw toward the Land of Israel and Jerusalem and the Holy Temple and the Holy of Holies.
And as mentioned,
this is easier to effect upon a simple person than upon a great one,
because a great one can convince himself that he is at an elevated level and he no longer needs to be elevated;
ווייל א גדול קען זיך איינרעדן אז ער האלט בי א דרגא נעלית און ער דארף ווייטער ניט נתעלה ווערן;
unlike when one tells a simple person –
"Holy of Holies",
he understands with utmost simplicity that he must strive to be elevated to this level,
beginning with "he should turn his face" during prayer toward the Holy of Holies.
And in this is emphasized in the portion:
It is not the interpretation that when there is lacking in this "Masei",
he is lacking some elevation –
rather when there is lacking in this "Masei" he remains stuck in the "desert of the nations",
"the great and terrible desert, snake, fiery serpent, and scorpion, and thirst where there is no water",
"in a land of gloom and deep darkness etc."
The explanation: When the aspect of "Masei" is lacking for him,
there is not a small difference,
but rather this is a difference from one extreme to the other –
that instead of arriving at "a good and spacious land",
"a land which the L-rd your G-d cares for; the eyes of the L-rd your G-d are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year",
one remains stuck in "the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents, scorpions, and thirst, where there is no water",
"a land of shadow and death" G-d forbid!
One sees from this the great necessity that the matter of "Masei" must constantly exist,
because if not, one remains stuck in the aforementioned place.
And a great person may claim,
that he holds that he already finds himself on a high level –
however, since it is stated in the Torah that when "Masei" is lacking,
he remains stuck on the level mentioned earlier,
it is understood,
that what he thinks that he currently holds at a high level,
it shows that there is for him an even lower descent,
since he thinks and deludes himself that finding himself there he holds at a lofty level!...
But certainly the intention of the descent is also –
a need for ascent!
This further demonstrates the great necessity that there must be "Masei" and not remain stuck in the wilderness, G-d forbid.
This is the lesson from the fact that this Shabbat is Parshat Masei
(alone) –
both for a simple person and for a great person –
that on this Shabbat one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion,
which was read on this Shabbat,
and which each person read in the form of Shnayim Mikra VeEchad Targum on the eve of this Shabbat and on the Shabbat day,
That is, that one must live with the matter of "Masei",
that one must keep going and become elevated and never rest. And if not,
one remains, G-d forbid, in the aforementioned place.
And this is a lesson not only for this Shabbat,
but from this it is drawn forth to all times.
And the lesson adds to the general lesson of the Shabbat of Blessing of Menachem Av
(which occurs this year on Shabbat Parshat Masei) –
that the matter of "Menachem",
consolation in double measure,
must be in the manner of "Masei",
and one goes until one arrives at the redemption.
And since the Torah commands the service of "Masei" –
it is certain that "the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him",
and it is certain that he has the abilities for this,
because "I do not ask of them except according to their strength".
And may it be His will that from this discourse, explanation, and discussion about this,
one should come to "These are the words which Moses spoke to all of Israel"
(as one will read in the Minchah prayer),
which is similar to "These are the journeys of the children of Israel who went out of the land of Egypt according to their legions" which was "by the hand of Moses and Aaron",
"And Moses wrote their goings forth according to their journeys etc. and these are their journeys according to their goings forth"
[as explained in Likkutei Torah on our portion) –
that there should be "Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust" with Moses and Aaron among them,
and one should hear in its simple sense with physical ears the "These are the words which Moses spoke",
and see with physical eyes,
below ten handbreadths,
speedily in our days,
as souls in bodies.
Discourse (similar to a talk)
Beginning with the words "These are the journeys of the children of Israel etc."
It is also customary to study a topic in the weekly portion connected with Rashi's commentary;
ס'איז אויך רגיל צו אפלערנען אן ענין אין פרשת השבוע פארבונדן מיט פירוש רש"י;
a topic in the notes of my father on the Zohar of our portion;
אן ענין אין די הערות פון טאטן אויפן זהר דפרשתנו;
a topic in Pirkei Avot relevant to this Shabbat;
אן ענין אין פרקי אבות השייך לשבת זה;
and during the three weeks –
since one is eager and rushing to study the Laws of the Chosen House of the Rambam –
one will also mention a word in the Laws of the Chosen House;
וועט מען דערמאנען א ווארט אויך אין הל' בית הבחירה;
and in accordance with what recently,
this year,
one is eager that each day one should study a lesson in the Rambam,
and how good –
three chapters a day –
one will also speak about a topic in the lesson of today.
In the midst of the journeys in our portion it is stated "And they journeyed from Marah and came to Elim,
and in Elim were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms,
and they encamped there."
The reason why the verse says what was in Elim:
Rashi explains at the beginning of the portion the reason "Why were these journeys written" –
"A parable of a king whose son was ill and he took him to a distant place to heal him,
when they were returning, his father began to count all the journeys,
he said to him: here we slept,
here we were cooled,
here you hurt your head etc.",
that is, that in every place where there was an encampment, there was a virtue or a deficiency among the Jews etc.
Therefore, the verse says that the advantage of Elim was that there were there "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms,"
and therefore,
when the Jews came to this place and saw this, it was for them a sign that here should be an encampment,
"and they encamped there."
One must understand what is the matter of this sign,
the advantage of this place
(because of which the Jews rested there) –
that this is a question not only for a five-year-old studying Scripture,
but also for a forty-year-old studying the Mishnah and a hundred-year-old, etc.:
Granted, regarding "twelve springs of water,"
the advantage in this for the Jews is understandable:
Because the Jews were going in the desert,
"a thirsty land where there is no water" –
it is understandable that when they saw a place in the desert
(Elim)
where there were "twelve springs of water,"
it brought forth in them joy,
for from one spring all the Jews could receive water,
as one sees simply,
all the more so from "twelve springs of water";
עאכו"כ פון "שתים עשרה עינות מים";
but "seventy date palms," however, is completely out of proportion that this should be sufficient for the millions of Jews who were then
(six hundred thousand only men from the age of twenty years up to sixty years,
and all the rest,
men, women, and children –
are millions)?!
To say that one gives millions of Jews only seventy date palms –
is seemingly a matter of "he who mocks the poor"! And even if some Jews will benefit from the seventy date palms,
it will cause a matter of jealousy, rivalry, and war.
Granted, in Parshat Beshalach where it says "and they came to Elim, and there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they encamped there by the water" –
it is not such a difficulty,
for there it is not such a practical difference to bring out that the place had an advantage in relation to the Jews. There it is stated only to bring out that while going in the desert they came to an inhabited place where there is water and date palms;
ווייל דארטן איז ניט אזא נפק"מ צו ארויסברענגען אז דער ארט האט געהאט א מעלה ביחס צו אידן. דארטן שטייט עס נאר צו ארויסברענגען אז גייענדיק במדבר איז מען געקומען למקום ישוב וואו ס'איז דא מים ותמרים;
but in our Parsha, the verse tells it in order to emphasize how in this place there is an advantage in relation to the Jews
(as with every encampment in our Parsha which is connected with an advantage or its opposite in relation to the Jews) –
the question becomes, what kind of advantage is there in seventy date palms for millions of Jews?!
And Rashi does not address it.
And as will be explained below.
Because at this time double consolation is emphasized,
will one speak of another matter connected with Rashi in our Parsha,
will it be "double"?
In the continuation of the journeys,
when the Jews came to Mount Hor, it says "and Aaron the priest went up to Mount Hor at the word of Hashem, and he died there in the fortieth year of the going out of the children of Israel from the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on the first of the month,"
and "and Aaron was one hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Hor."
The five-year-old studying Scripture asks:
I have not found its parallel in Scripture –
one does not find anywhere in the Chumash that the Torah should tell all these details when someone passed away as it tells here by Aaron,
"in the fortieth year...
in the fifth month, on the first of the month"? One does not find it –
not by Adam,
not by Noah,
not by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
even not by Moses and Miriam
(brother and sister of Aaron)?!
Regarding the time of Moses' death, it is stated only in the Oral Torah,
and there itself –
with a whole calculation. And even Haman –
many years after the time of Moses' death –
only knew the "month in which Moses died,"
"and he did not know that on the seventh of Adar he died and on the seventh of Adar he was born." One indeed knows that "the Holy One, blessed be He, sits and fills the years of the righteous from day to day and from month to month,"
and so it is also according to the simple meaning of Scripture regarding Moses –
"I am one hundred and twenty years old today,
today my days and years are complete,
on this day I was born and on this day I will die" –
but nevertheless, it is not stated explicitly in the Chumash the time of Moses' death;
אבער אעפ"כ שטייט ניט בפירוש אין חומש זמן מיתת משה;
The only one regarding whom the Torah tells explicitly the time of his death in detail with all the particulars –
is regarding Aaron the priest. One must understand why.
And Rashi does not comment on this at all. Consequently, this must be understood by a five-year-old either by himself,
or from what he previously learned.
And as will be explained below.
On the Zohar of our Parsha, there are no notes from Father. But in his notes on a Mishnah in Kiddushin, he explains the matter of the daughters of Tzelafchad which is discussed at the end of our Parsha:
He says that the five daughters of Tzelafchad "are opposite the five Gevurot,
which are also divided into two divisions,
three of them, Choglah, Milkah, and Tirtzah, are the three Gevurot that are sweetened,
and two of them, Machlah and No'ah,
are opposite the two Gevurot that are not sweetened."
And afterwards he adds:
"And one should further note regarding the matter of the five daughters of Tzelafchad,
that in Parshat Pinchas, when they claimed a portion in the land, it is written Machlah, No'ah, Choglah, Milkah, Tirtzah,
where No'ah is adjacent to Machlah,
and this is in the manner of their wisdom,
and in Parshat Masei it is written Machlah, Tirtzah, Choglah, Milkah, No'ah,
where No'ah is last,
and this is according to their greatness one from the other in years,
and they were carried in the order of their birth,
and as Rashi explains there. It is because it is understood that the five daughters of Tzelafchad, although they are the five Gevurot,
yet they are good Gevurot,
for they claimed a portion in the land etc.",
and he explains in the letters of Kabbalah that there are two orders and manners in the order of the five Gevurot,
and corresponding to this, the two manners are in the order of the five daughters of Tzelafchad in Parshat Pinchas and in our Parsha.
Afterwards he continues:
"And that the exchange regarding No'ah in Parshat Pinchas relative to Parshat Masei is with Tirtzah,
that in Parshat Pinchas No'ah is the second and Tirtzah is the fifth,
and in Parshat Masei Tirtzah is the second and No'ah is the fifth,
it is because...
No'ah is the Gevurah of Hod,
and Tirtzah is the Gevurah of Gevurah,
behold, both of them are specifically in the left line of the Hei Gevurot, in Gevurah and Hod,
therefore the change and exchange is in these two. And it is as it is said, 'to the leech are two daughters, Hav Hav,'
the two daughters are No'ah and Tirtzah,
and they are the aspect of Hei Beit, Hei Beit,
meaning in Parshat Pinchas Tirtzah is the Hei, that is the fifth,
and No'ah is the Beit, that is the second,
and in Parshat Masei it is the opposite,
No'ah is the fifth, the Hei,
and Tirtzah is the second, the Beit. And see in the holy Parshat Beshalach page 56 side 1 regarding the matter of Hei Beit, Hei Beit."
One must understand:
A) The lesson from this in the service of man,
in actual deed. And especially since the daughters of Tzelafchad are "good Gevurot",
"for they claimed a portion in the land",
and they entered into the entrance to the land –
and according to the known principle that the generation that entered the land its matter is –
actual deed *97 –
it is understood,
that the five good Gevurot of the daughters of Tzelafchad are not only above,
but primarily as they come down below in this world also in actual deed. There must certainly be from this a lesson in actual deed.
B) Regarding the matter itself:
The five daughters of Tzelafchad are opposite the five "good Gevurot" "for they claimed a portion in the land"
(as explained in the note)
and good Gevurot below in actual deed
(as above) –
then how does he bring in the note that the two daughters Tirtzah and No'ah are as it is said "to the leech are two daughters, Hav Hav",
which is a matter of the side of impurity,
as also explained in the Zohar that he references
(Parshat Beshalach),
and especially according to what is explained in many places *98 that "leech" has the gematria of Amalek with the inclusive
(and also the letters of Amalek)?!
And as will be explained further.
In Pirkei Avot which we learn on this Shabbat
(Chapter 2)
Mishnah 4 –
it states: "He
(Rabban Gamliel the son of Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi)
used to say: Make His will like your will, so that He will make your will like His will,
nullify your will before His will, so that He will nullify the will of others before your will."
According to the known principle that Pirkei Avot is "matters of piety" –
one must understand the words of the Mishnah:
According to the Shulchan Aruch, one must certainly fulfill the will of God,
as is obvious and simple. Moreover:
The Rambam rules in the Laws of Divorce that every Jew "desires to be of Israel and desires to perform all the commandments etc."
That is, not only that according to law every Jew must fulfill the will of the Holy One, blessed be He,
but with his true will he desires to fulfill the will of the Holy One, blessed be He –
then how can one say that "make His will like your will" is a matter of "matters of piety"?!
And in addition, the Mishnah gives a reason why "make His will like your will" • "so that He will make your will like His will".
That is, that were it not for this reason, the matter of "make His will like your will" would not be so strongly in force even according to "matters of piety",
and only when one knows the reason,
then it adds to the fulfillment of the will of the Holy One, blessed be He.
It is entirely incomprehensible how one can say such a thing –
when the fulfillment of the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, must be simply according to the law of the Shulchan Aruch?!
And afterwards he adds further:
"Nullify your will before His will" –
also a matter that is according to the law of the Shulchan Aruch seemingly,
and he also gives a reason for this –
"so that He will nullify the will of others before your will"?!
And in addition, Rabban Gamliel says it in the manner of "he used to say",
a continuous tense,
that is, that he would say it constantly –
even though this is seemingly a simple matter in the Shulchan Aruch?
And as will be explained further.
There is no Halacha of Beit HaBechirah of the Rambam; we will stop on a matter in chapter six,
because we are now holding in the sixth millennium:
At the beginning of the chapter, the Rambam writes:
"The entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain."
The reason why the Rambam begins with the negative side "The entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain" and not initially in the positive "The entire Temple was on the slope of the mountain" –
one can say:
Because the Holy Temple came as a continuation of the Tabernacle. As the Rambam himself writes in chapter one of the Laws of the Chosen House,
that the Tabernacle was the beginning of the entire matter of the dwelling of the Divine Presence in a house below,
and the Tabernacle was "shown on the mountain,"
and as a continuation of this was the Holy Temple;
און אלס המשך לזה איז געווען דער בית המקדש;
and the Tabernacle was on level ground
(in the desert)
not on the slope of the mountain –
there could have been a question that also the Temple was on level ground. Therefore, the Rambam immediately begins with the negative side:
"The entire Temple was not on level ground
(not like the Tabernacle)
but on the slope of the mountain."
Afterwards, the Rambam continues:
"When a person enters from the Eastern Gate of the Temple Mount, he walks level until the end of the rampart,
and ascends from the rampart to the Women's Courtyard by twelve steps, etc.
(and states the measure of the height of each step),
and walks the entire Women's Courtyard level,
and ascends from it to the Courtyard of Israel, which is the beginning of the Courtyard, by fifteen steps, etc.,
and walks the entire Courtyard of Israel level and ascends from it to the Courtyard of the Priests by a step one cubit high, etc.,"
and there itself there are additional three steps,
"and walks the entire Courtyard of the Priests and the Altar,
and between the Entrance Hall and the Altar level,
and ascends from there to the Entrance Hall by twelve steps, etc.,
and the Entrance Hall and the Sanctuary entirely level."
One must understand:
The essence of the Temple is –
that there should be "and I will dwell among them" through the service of man,
and as the Rambam writes:
"A house for God, prepared to offer the sacrifices in it and to make pilgrimage to it three times a year,"
"Every male shall appear before the Lord God."
And based on this, it is understood that all these detailed laws in the structure of the Temple are precisely relevant and are necessarily present in the service of man of offering the sacrifices and celebrating the pilgrimage festivals three times a year, etc., through which he brings about the "and I will dwell among them."
One must understand:
What is the significance in the service of man of "the entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain,"
and all these steps from the rampart to the Women's Courtyard,
from the Women's Courtyard to the Courtyard of Israel,
from the Courtyard of Israel to the Courtyard of the Priests,
and from the Courtyard of the Priests to the Entrance Hall?
And on the other hand:
Since all these steps must be in the service of man
(because it was so in the Temple) –
a) Why was the Tabernacle not on the slope of the mountain,
and were there not all these steps after this? b) Why were there no steps from the Sanctuary to the Holy of Holies,
on the contrary:
If there are steps from each part in the Temple to the part that is higher than it
(from the rampart to the Women's Courtyard,
from the Women's Courtyard to the Courtyard of Israel, etc.),
then surely there should have been ascents from the Sanctuary to the Holy of Holies,
which is the highest level in the Temple?!
And as will be explained later.
Today's Rambam lesson
(three chapters per day)
is chapters twelve to fourteen of the Laws of Forbidden Relations.
In this lesson, the laws of conversion begin
[the laws of conversion according to the Rambam are a part of the Laws of Forbidden Relations –
chapters thirteen to fourteen] –
which is a matter relevant to these days when one speaks about the matter of conversion according to Halacha.
At the beginning of chapter thirteen, the Rambam begins:
"With three things did Israel enter the covenant,
with circumcision, immersion, and a sacrifice,"
and explains how it was the first time when Israel entered the covenant,
and continues further:
"And so for all generations, when a gentile wishes to enter the covenant and take shelter under the wings of the Divine Presence and accept upon himself the yoke of the Torah,
he requires circumcision, immersion, and the offering of a sacrifice." Afterwards, he adds:
"And in this time when there is no sacrifice,
he requires circumcision and immersion,
and when the Holy Temple is built, he will bring a sacrifice."
The Rogatchover asks a stormy question:
"See in the words of our teacher, from the Laws of Those Lacking Atonement, chapter 1, law 2, that he has not yet become like the fit ones of Israel."
(And the language of the Rambam there:
"A convert who has circumcised and immersed and has not yet brought his offering,
even though he is forbidden to eat sacred foods until he brings his offering, he is not among those lacking atonement,
for his offering delays him from being a complete convert and from being like all the fit ones of Israel,
and because of this he does not eat sacred foods, since he has not yet become like the fit ones of Israel,
and once he brings his offering and becomes a fit Israelite, he eats sacred foods.") –
Now how does it accord with what the Rambam writes in the Laws of Forbidden Relations that "in this time when there is no offering,
circumcision and immersion are required," and with this he is a complete convert,
a fit one among Israel?!
The Rogatchover continues to explain:
"And see in the Commentary on the Mishnah
(of the Rambam)
on Keritot there, at the beginning of chapter 2, that it is only initially. And here our teacher holds that only regarding sacred foods is he not yet called a complete Israelite,
but regarding other matters he is like an Israelite in every respect,
and accordingly, in this time he lacks nothing at all on account of the offering."
That which is stated in the Commentary on the Mishnah of the Rambam
(as the Rogatchover brings)
"Since he has circumcised and immersed, he is permitted to eat sacred foods, and the offering is merely a commandment,"
that is, that what prevents a convert from eating sacred foods until he brings an offering is only initially –
this is no answer –
because:
It is known the rule that when there is a contradiction between the Commentary on the Mishnah and the Mishneh Torah, the law follows the later work,
that is, the Mishneh Torah,
and in the Mishneh Torah he writes that "his offering delays him from being a complete convert and from being like all the fit ones of Israel,
and because of this he does not eat sacred foods, since he has not yet become like the fit ones of Israel,"
and he does not write that this is only initially –
thus is the law. The question remains how it accords with what he writes in the Laws of Forbidden Relations.
That which the Rogatchover answers:
"Here our teacher holds that only regarding sacred foods is he not yet called a complete Israelite,
but regarding other matters he is like an Israelite in every respect,
and accordingly, in this time he lacks nothing at all on account of the offering" –
requires explanation:
The simple meaning of the language of the Rambam in the Laws of Those Lacking Atonement, "the offering delays him from being a complete convert and from being like all the fit ones of Israel,"
"he has not yet become like the fit ones of Israel,"
is –
איז –
that the offering delays him from being a complete convert and like all the fit ones of Israel regarding all matters,
and not only regarding sacred foods;
און ניט נאר בנוגע לקדשים;
now how can one say that "in this time he lacks nothing at all on account of the offering,"
when the Rambam writes that "the offering delays him from being a complete convert and from being like all the fit ones of Israel"?!
Consequently, the contradiction from this to the Laws of Forbidden Relations where the Rambam writes "and in this time when there is no offering, circumcision and immersion are required,"
and through this he becomes a complete convert, seemingly remains.
And from this could also have emerged a strange situation –
in the time immediately after the destruction of the Holy Temple:
There could have been a situation that immediately after the destruction there would be converts who converted in the time when the Holy Temple was standing and they brought an offering,
consequently they are complete converts and can
(in that matter)
eat sacred foods,
while there could have been other converts who converted after the destruction,
they could not bring any offering
(because the Holy Temple is no longer),
and nevertheless they become converts through circumcision and immersion
(as the Rambam rules in the Laws of Forbidden Relations),
but they are not like the other converts
(who converted before the destruction),
because they can
(in that matter)
not eat any sacred foods,
and "regarding sacred foods he is not yet called a complete Israelite,"
because "the offering delays him from being a complete convert and from being like all the fit ones of Israel"!
That is, there would be levels among the converts themselves –
complete Israelites also regarding sacred foods
(because they brought an offering),
and those who "regarding sacred foods are not yet called a complete Israelite,"
because "the offering delays him from being a complete convert, etc.";
ווייל "קרבן מעכבו להיות גר גמור כו'";
and together with this one should say that regarding the converts who converted after the destruction "he lacks nothing at all on account of the offering"?!
Furthermore:
The Rambam writes in his epistle to Rabbi Ovadiah the righteous convert –
who was a convert in the time of the Rambam
(after the destruction of the Holy Temple)
when one does not need to bring an offering
(as the Rambam rules in the Laws of Forbidden Relations) –
"Let your lineage not be light in your eyes,
if we trace our lineage to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
you trace your lineage to the One Who spoke and the world came into being."
Today, how does it correspond with what the Rambam writes in Hilchos Mechusrei Kapparah,
that "a convert who has been circumcised and immersed and has not yet brought his offering, etc." –
like Ovadiah the righteous convert –
"his offering prevents him from being a complete gentile and from being like all the kosher Jews of Israel,"
and "he has not yet become like the kosher Jews of Israel"?!
And as will be explained below.
And may it be His will that one should hold oneself –
without a vow –
to all these measures in the study of Torah.
And if one does not hold oneself to them –
it is because one is still adding to them,
and this will add even more to the "achishenah" of the future redemption –
as it appears that also in the "achishenah" itself there are levels. For already in the time of the Gemara it states "all the ends have passed and the matter depends only on repentance,"
so consequently there was already then a state of "achishenah" –
and nevertheless, since then more than a thousand years have already passed and we have not yet been saved. It is therefore necessary to say that in the "achishenah" itself there are levels –
May the addition in the study of Torah add to the "achishenah,"
so that there should be the "achishenah" within the "achishenah,"
and immediately and at once the true and complete redemption should come,
and one will go to the Holy Land,
to the Holy City,
to the Holy Mountain,

to the Third Holy Temple,
an eternal Temple,
"a Sanctuary, O Lord, that Your hands have established,"
and then will also be revealed the Tabernacle that is the work of Moses's hands, which are eternal,
and with joy and a good heart.
The explanation in the matter of "twelve springs and seventy date palms" at Elim:
Rashi has already explained in the portion of Beshalach:
"twelve springs of water" –
"corresponding to the twelve tribes they were provided for them,"
and "seventy date palms –
corresponding to the seventy elders."
From this, even a five-year-old studying Scripture understands also in our portion that the "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms" are corresponding to the twelve tribes and seventy elders.
And one may add to this –
that in our portion, even a five-year-old studying Scripture by himself understands
(even without Rashi in the portion of Beshalach)
that "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms" are corresponding to the twelve tribes and seventy elders:
When he studies our portion,
the five-year-old studying Scripture already knows,
that when the Torah states a specific number of things, it is intentional and has a meaning,
and it has a connection and alludes to a specific matter in this number. As Rashi previously explained at length in the portion of Nasso
(and by allusion in the portion of Pinchas)
regarding the number in the details of the offerings of the princes. For example:
"one bull –
corresponding to Abraham, etc.,
one ram –
corresponding to Isaac, etc.,
one lamb –
corresponding to Jacob, etc." "And for the peace offering, two cattle –
corresponding to Moses and Aaron, etc."
From this the five-year-old studying Scripture understands,
since the Almighty commanded that one should offer the details of the offerings in these numbers –
or the princes themselves intended to offer the items in these numbers –
it is certainly with a meaning. One only needs an explanation of what the numbers correspond to,
because they can correspond to several matters,
therefore Rashi needs to explain what they correspond to.
(For example:
"and for the peace offering, two cattle" could correspond to the two tablets and the like,
Rashi needs to explain that this is "corresponding to Moses and Aaron, etc."
And similarly regarding the rest.)
Based on this, it is understood that when it states in our portion "and at Elim, twelve springs of water and seventy date palms,"
the five-year-old understands that the number certainly has a meaning and corresponds to a specific matter in this number.
And here he no longer needs that one should explain to him what the numbers "twelve" and "seventy" correspond to. He understands by himself that the only thing that corresponds to twelve –
is the twelve tribes,
and the only thing that corresponds to seventy –
is the seventy elders,
as he has already learned in the portion of Behaalosecha "and gather seventy men of the elders of the people."
And the precision in the number of seventy elders is seen from the fact that when they took six elders from each tribe,
and six times twelve
(tribes)
equals seventy-two,
Moses had to cast a lot as to which of the seventy-two should be the seventy elders
[and the two who remained,
Eldad and Medad,
it was not due to their deficiency. Because on the contrary –
"they prophesied in the camp" ] –
this shows that the number seventy is necessary and exact.
And since that "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms" correspond to the twelve tribes and seventy elders –
the one who is five years old for Scripture understands that the advantage in this place
(Elim)
because of which "and they encamped there" –
did not consist in that there were there in the desert springs of water and date palms for the Jews to eat,
but rather in that the "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms" correspond to the twelve tribes and seventy elders,
which indicates an advantage and praise of the Jews:
Notwithstanding that "and they came to Elim" was after "and they journeyed from Marah",
where there was the test and an undesirable matter occurred among the Jews,
nevertheless,
when they came to Elim,
there were there "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms" corresponding to twelve tribes and seventy elders.
And to such an extent is the advantage and praise in this –
that the "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms" were there since the six days of creation –
because springs of water are by the hand of Heaven,
not like wells which are by the hand of man,
and date palms take seventy years to grow –
consequently it turns out that because the Jews would come to Elim,
already from the six days of creation there was prepared in this place
(where the Jews would come thousands of years later)
twelve springs of water and seventy date palms corresponding to twelve tribes and seventy elders! And it is also known the advantage of the seventy elders,
as is understood from Parshat Behaalotecha,
that "and He took of the spirit that was upon him
(upon Moses)
and placed it upon the seventy men, the elders",
and through them the influences came to the Jews
(because from Moses himself it could not come)!
Therefore:
When the Jews came to Elim from Marah and saw that notwithstanding what they had done in Marah,
there are found in Elim the "twelve springs of water and seventy date palms" which wait there for them from the six days of creation,
which brings out the praise and advantage of the Jews –
therefore this was for them a sign that they should encamp there,
and –
און –
"and they encamped there".
The reason why specifically the time of the death of Aaron is related in detail in the Torah
(unlike the time of the death of other people in the Torah),
is –
איז –
because specifically in the death of Aaron one finds a matter that was not present in other people:
Regarding that which it is stated in the account of the death of Aaron in Parshat Chukat "and they wept for Aaron thirty days, all the house of Israel" –
Rashi explained:
"the men and the women,
because Aaron was a pursuer of peace and cast love between quarreling parties and between a man and his wife".
That which one finds only regarding the mourning of Aaron,
that all the Jews participated in it.
Unlike regarding other people one does not find such a unity of all people or Jews –
not by Adam the first. Not by Noah. Not by Abraham,
and on the contrary –
Nimrod waged war with him. Not by Isaac –
Ishmael opposed him. Not by Jacob –
Esau opposed him. Not by Miriam. Not by Moses –
at his death it is stated "and the children of Israel wept for Moses",
"the males,
but regarding Aaron,
because he was a pursuer of peace and gave peace between a man and his fellow and between a woman and her husband,
it is said all the house of Israel,
males and females".
The one who is five years old for Scripture understands based on this –
since the death of Aaron was distinguished from all other people in the Torah –
therefore it is understandable why the time of his death should be distinguished from all others,
by that which it is calculated in detail when this was –
"in the fortieth year..
in the fifth month, on the first of the month".
And one should add to this:
Since that all the Jews were present at the mourning of Aaron the Kohen
("because Aaron was a pursuer of peace and cast love between quarreling parties and between a man and his wife"),
unlike at the mourning of all others not all were present –
therefore the date of the day of his death is a significant matter that pertains to all the Jews,
men and women,
and also to their children,
children,
that they should remember it in generations after this,
and transmit it to their children etc.
Therefore the Torah emphasizes it –
"in the fortieth year..
in the fifth month, on the first of the month".
This pertains to all Jews in that generation,
and afterwards also to their children and grandchildren in all generations,
so that in every single year when the time arrives,
one should remember that then was the death of Aaron and all were present,
because Aaron specifically engaged in love of Israel,
in uniting all Jews –
therefore one should know from generation to generation,
that "in those days at this time,"
"these days are remembered and performed" –
that at this time one should gather together and remember what happened then,
and hold on and strengthen oneself in the path that Aaron indicated –
"pursuer of peace and one who casts love" between Jews,
and if something was lacking in this –
to rectify it,
until there will be love and unity of Israel in completeness.
The matter pertains especially at the time when one reads Parshat Massei –
therefore it is told in this Parsha:
Parshat Massei always occurs during "Bein HaMetzarim"
(the three weeks),
and in most years it is the Shabbat before the Nine Days,
and sometimes during the Nine Days –
and "Bein HaMetzarim" in general,
and especially the Nine Days
(in the Shulchan Aruch (Beit Yosef) it speaks only about the laws of the Nine Days,
and only in the "Mapah,"
in the Rema,
it also speaks about the laws of "Bein HaMetzarim,"
the three weeks)
are connected with the destruction of the Holy Temple,
which the destruction of the Second Temple was due to the opposite of love for no reason –
therefore at this time it is especially pertinent to emphasize the virtue of Aaron the Kohen,
who was "a lover of peace and a pursuer of peace, a lover of creatures and drawing them close to Torah,"
the matter of love and unity of Israel with greater strength and might,
and to such an extent that because of this "and they wept for Aaron...
the entire house of Israel" –
because through this one nullifies the cause of the destruction,
and when the cause is nullified, the effect is nullified.
And may it be His will that it should be so now:
Through that which one holds on to the way of Aaron the Kohen in the matter of love of Israel,
and one rectifies all matters that are lacking in this –
one nullifies the cause of the destruction,
and then automatically the effect is nullified,
and the true and complete redemption comes,
And as mentioned above,
one hears "These are the words which Moses spoke to all of Israel,"
because there will be Moses and Aaron with them *134.
The explanation in the note on the Zohar –
how does that which the five daughters of Tzelafchad are in good gevurot here below in the world of Asiyah correspond with what he says in the note that "to the leech are two daughters, hav hav" on the side of impurity are the two daughters Tirtzah and No'ah
(good gevurot),
and how this is in the action of man –
will be understood by prefacing what is explained in the Zohar in Parshat Beshalach regarding the matter of "hav hav" as marked in the note:
He raises a difficulty there in the Zohar on that which is written "Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of Hashem, Et Vahev in Sufah and the streams of Arnon,"
and says:
It is written "in the Book of the Wars of Hashem"
(and not "in the Torah of the Wars of Hashem"),
because "it is a supernal secret,
there is a place for the Holy One, blessed be He, that is called a book...
all the forces and mighty deeds that the Holy One, blessed be He, does depend on that book and from there they emanate,
Et Vahev in Sufah,
Who is Vahev,
but all those forces and all those mighty deeds that the Holy One, blessed be He, does depend on that book,
and when the Holy One, blessed be He, wages His battles in one place that is at the end of the levels and is called Vahev,
as it is said, to the leech are two daughters, hav hav,

at the end of the levels it is found,
in Sufah, the Sea of Reeds,
is called a sea that is the end of all levels."
There are in this
(in general)
two interpretations –
one interpretation that the aspect of "Vahev,"
"hav hav,"
is on the side of impurity,
and a second interpretation that this is in holiness:
The first interpretation in this,
that "Vahev"
("hav hav")
refers to the side of impurity,
is stated in Or HaChamah,
and similarly in Kehilat Yaakov, entry "Vahev":
And see the explanation in Or HaChamah:
"The supernal mystery is Binah,

"forces and mights",
that the entire left side emanates from there, which is the root of judgments, etc.
"One place that is the end and conclusion",
that is Malchut,
the end of Atzilut,
"and it is called Vehav",
meaning the life-force of the waters that extends to the external ones called Hav,

meaning, if you wish to know Vehav,
which is the attribute that makes war,
"in Sufah,
at the end of the levels it is found",
so that it will extend in the secret of the ten Sefirot to the depths of the sea,
and this is what is said "The Sea of Reeds is called a sea that is the end of all the levels" of Atzilut. And behold, through this the way of the wars from Atzilut to every level below is explained.
(And then the Zohar continues to explain "in Atzilut itself from Binah to Malchut" which is what the continuation of the verse "and the streams of Arnon" addresses).
That is:
"Vehav in Sufah" refers to the external ones and Klipot
("Hav")
that nurse from Malchut,
the aspect of "in Sufah",
the end of Atzilut,
because since this is the end of Atzilut, from it there can be a nursing by the external ones. And this is the explanation in the Zohar "One place that is at the end of the levels and is called Vehav,
as it is written 'to the leech are two daughters, Hav Hav',
in Sufah,
at the end of the levels it is found" –
that the "two daughters"
("Hav Hav")
refer to the aspect of "Vehav",
Klipot and external ones of the Other Side,
that nurse from "Sufah",
the end of the levels of Atzilut
(Malchut).
And according to the simple understanding of the matter, that Klipot and external ones of the Other Side cry out "Hav Hav",
they want to nurse and have more and more,
as our sages, of blessed memory, said "From heaven they give, give; they do not take weight",
but in Klipot it is the opposite,
that one only cries out "Hav Hav" and gives nothing back.
Thus far from Or HaChamah.
And in this manner he also explains in Kehilat Yaakov there,
that "Vehav"
("Hav Hav")
refers to the external ones of the Other Side:
"And Hav are the Gevurot that are in Nukvah,
and this is 'And Vehav in Sufah',
at the end of the levels,
Zohar Beshalach 56a.
And it can be said that it is the aspect of the Gevurot of Hod of Nukvah, which is the last Gevurah of the five Gevurot
(as explained in the father's note in Torat Levi Yitzchak),
and this is what is said 'in Sufah',
at the end of the five Gevurot, and it is Hod,
and there is the primary hold of the external ones...
and this is what is said 'to the leech are two daughters, Hav Hav',
leech refers to Hod in their hearts, with the inclusive
(with the inclusive),
two daughters that nurse from it,
and they are Hav Hav,
and thus the Zohar brings as a proof for the aspect of Vehav from what is written 'to the leech are two daughters, Hav',
and they are two harsh Gevurot, etc."
Afterwards, however, there is a second explanation
(brought in Or HaChamah)
in the Zohar –
that "Vehav",
"Hav Hav",
is in holiness:
That which is stated in the Zohar "There is a place for the Holy One, blessed be He, that is called Sefer" refers to "Malchut, which is the book of Tiferet"
("There is a place for the Holy One, blessed be He –
Tiferet",
ת"ת",
"that is called Sefer –
Malchut"),
"and it is so called because all the things that are destined are recorded in it to do them in their times, etc., and this is what is said
(in the Zohar)
'And all forces and mights depend on that place, for from there they emerge,
for the war is not made except through, etc.' 'And the verse is thus understood: The wars of Hashem are,
meaning all the forces and all the mights,
and the explanation: and who is this book? Vehav,
that one that says Hav Hav,
asking from Tiferet to influence to her
[And it can be said that the Vav of "Vehav" refers to Zeir Anpin (Tiferet),
and "Hav" refers to Malchut that "asks from Tiferet to influence to her"),
which is at the end of all the levels as it goes on to explain
(in the Zohar)."
That is:
"Vehav"
("Hav Hav")
refers to Malchut of holiness,
which "has nothing of its own",
like a pauper who craves everything,
therefore she "cries out" to Tiferet –
"Hav Hav"
(in holiness),
that Tiferet should influence to Malchut. As explained in many places that Malchut is the aspect of Knesset Yisrael,
named so because she gathers and receives from Zeir Anpin
(because she does not have her own).
That this
("Vehav" in holiness)
corresponds to the explanation of "Vehav" from the word love,
as explained here in the Zohar and in the words of our sages, of blessed memory.
And according to this, it turns out that the explanation of the Zohar on the verse "to the leech are two daughters, Hav Hav" is that "Hav Hav" is for the better,
in holiness –
the asking and request of Malchut that Tiferet should influence to her.
And it can be said further:
that through "Hav Hav" in holiness,
the asking of Malchut to Tiferet to influence to her,
the "Hav Hav" of the Other Side is clarified,
which nurses from the Sefirah of Malchut
(the end of Atzilut),
according to the first explanation of "Vehav".
Based on the above, another thing is understood:
It is known that every thing,
also the shells,
must have a root in holiness,
and as the saying, "He looked into the Torah and created the world." Even the shells and externalities of the other side have a root in holiness –
it is indeed drawn down through screens and partitions and contractions and concealments and interruptions etc.,
but their root above is still in holiness. From this it is understood,
that every thing that exists in the shells,
must have its counterpart,
at least something similar to it,
in its root in holiness.
And likewise regarding the trait of "Give, give" in the shells,
that they cry out that they want to suckle more and more –
must have its counterpart in its root in holiness.
According to the above, this is understood:
Its counterpart in its root in holiness is the matter that "Malchut asks of Tiferet to bestow upon her."
And based on this, one can also explain what he says in the note, that the "two daughters 'Give, give'" are Noa and Tirtzah,
the aspects of Beit and Hei
(the might of Gevurah and the might of Hod)
from the five good mights, from the aspect that they demanded a portion in the Land:
Here it speaks about "Give, give" of holiness
(not of the other side),
might of holiness,
good mights.
And just as the interpretation in the Zohar regarding "Give, give" of holiness,
that Malchut asks of Tiferet to bestow upon her,
so too did Noa and Tirtzah,
in general all the daughters of Tzelafchad, demand –
"Give, give" –
a portion in the Land of Israel. For this is a matter of mights of holiness:
from the aspect of the very demand for a portion in the Land,
and afterwards –
the entry into the Land and the conquest of the Land
(as much as conquest applies to women),
and afterwards taking their portion in the Land in actuality –
all matters of "Give, give",
mights,
of holiness.
And through the demand of the daughters of Tzelafchad
(mights of holiness) –
from below to above,
in the manner of the request of Malchut from Tiferet to bestow upon her, from the aspect that she has nothing of her own –
there is drawn down from above to below a most sublime effluence. As is explained in many places, that in mights there are two matters:
mights from below to above,
the ascent and demand
("Give, give")
of the mights from below to above that one should draw down from above;
הגבורות מלמטלמ"ע אז מ'זאל ממשיך זיין מלמעלה;
and the drawing down and influence from above to below in a manner of an increase of vitality,
the superiority of the blessing of Yitzchak
(the aspect of Gevurah)
even relative to the blessing of Moshe etc.,
as is explained in the Siddur and in many places.
As this was simply in the daughters of Tzelafchad:
through their demand for a portion in the Land –
the Most High commanded to grant their demand –
"The daughters of Tzelafchad speak correctly: you shall surely give them a possession of inheritance",
and not only one portion,
but "the daughters of Tzelafchad took three portions in the inheritance." Including also the portion of the firstborn of their father which is two portions. And in addition to this –
through the demand of the daughters of Tzelafchad, a section in the Torah was added –
all matters of the drawing down of an increase of vitality.
And from this it is also understood that through the demand of the daughters of Tzelafchad in holiness for a portion in the Land
(while still being in the desert),
they refined the matter of "Give, give" of the other side,
and with greater strength and greater vigor –
in a manner of an increase of vitality –
so that instead of being in the "desert of the nations",
"the great and terrible desert, of snake, fiery serpent, and scorpion, and thirst, where there is no water",
"a land of gloom and deep darkness"
(as above, section 18),
which is the root of the shells
(as explained above in the discourse),
one should enter into the Holy Land,
the entry into the Land and the conquest of the Land and the division of the Land,
the superiority of action
(as above, section 24).
The lesson from this in the service of man:
Also in the service of man, there must be the matter of "Give, give"
(mights)
in holiness:
When a Jew makes for himself a true accounting of how much he could have accomplished in his service and how much he has actually accomplished –
he sees that he has actually accomplished incomparably less than how much he could have accomplished. This brings about in him the feeling that he is like a pauper who craves everything,
he has nothing of his own –
because that which is lacking in his service,
is not only in one detail,
but in every thing that he has done,
he could have accomplished incomparably more,
therefore he craves everything, that it should be incomparably better and more perfect.
Therefore he cries out "Give, give":
Since he feels that he has nothing in every thing –
he cries out:
Give me new powers so that I can accomplish as much as one needs to accomplish!
And this is no contradiction to the well-known saying that a Jew must know both his own shortcomings,
in order that he should correct them,
and his own virtues,
in order that he should know how to utilize them –
because the claim "Hav Hav" comes from the recognition and feeling of one's own virtue:
Knowing that being below in this world he has a "veritable part of G-d from above",
no matter how much he accomplishes,
it is incomparably less than what a "veritable part of G-d from above" can accomplish. Therefore he cries "Hav Hav":
he wants to accomplish more and better,
until the ultimate perfection.
And as mentioned above,
this is the holy root of the matter of "Hav Hav" in the shells).
And through the true claim of a Jew of "Hav Hav" –
one is assured that his request is fulfilled,
as it was with the daughters of Tzelafchad,
and on the contrary –
through this there is an additional elevation of the highest order,
that not looking at the fact that one finds oneself in the "desert of nations",
"the great and terrible desert, snake, serpent, and scorpion, and thirst where there is no water",
the root of the shells –
one draws there the waters of Torah,
the Ark of HaShem,
and the shells are nullified,
one refines the matter of "Hav Hav" of the other side,
until one leaves the desert,
and one arrives in the Holy Land,
the entry into the land and the conquest of the land and the division of the land,
one receives a portion in the land and a portion of the firstborn
(a double portion).
And in addition, through this
(the claim of "Hav Hav")
a section is added in the Torah,
in service –
the matter of studying Torah in the manner of "toiling in it".
Through the above one will also understand the matter in the service of man of the ascents in the Holy Temple –
"the entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain",
and afterwards the ascents from the Rampart to the Women's Courtyard to the Courtyard of Israel to the Courtyard of the Priests to the Entrance Hall":
In his service, a Jew must constantly become elevated higher and higher,
"they shall go from strength to strength" in the manner of "they have no rest". He must constantly cry "Hav Hav" and want to become elevated higher and higher in holiness. If he does not constantly cry "Hav Hav",
it is a sign that he is satisfied with the place where he finds himself and does not want to become elevated higher. But a Jew must constantly become elevated,
therefore it is incumbent that he should always cry "Hav Hav" and want more and more in holiness.
And this is the matter in the service of man of all these ascents in the Holy Temple:
That which "the entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain",
and the ascents higher to the Women's Courtyard,
and from the Women's Courtyard to the Courtyard of Israel,
and to the Courtyard of the Priests and to the Entrance Hall –
is because so it is in the spiritual matters,
corresponding to the virtue and holiness of each part in the Temple,
that is, that the Women's Courtyard is higher physically than the "Rampart" because it is higher spiritually,
and so on regarding the other levels. And so it must be in the service of man
(through which is fulfilled "and I will dwell in their midst"),
that there must constantly be ascents one above the other. And in the Holy Temple this is expressed even in its physical form,
that "the entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain",
and all these ascents above that in all the aforementioned levels.
Therefore a Jew must contemplate in order to learn regarding his service from all the details in the form of the Temple,
including that which "the entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain" and all these ascents above that.
And when a Jew contemplates this –
it teaches him regarding his service,
that he must constantly become elevated in his service. And in the place where a person's thought is, there he is –
when he thinks into it properly –
he indeed ascends all these ascents in the Holy Temple:
at the beginning of the service –
he immediately becomes elevated
(on the slope of the mountain),
and does not stand on level ground. Afterwards he does not remain standing on the level of the ascent of the Holy Temple
(on the slope of the mountain),
rather it is incumbent that he become elevated even higher –
to the Women's Courtyard. And afterwards become elevated even higher –
to the Courtyard of Israel. And even higher –
to the Courtyard of the Priests,
and even higher –
to the Entrance Hall –
constant ascents,
one above the other.
According to this, the question turns to the other side
(as above):
Since it is a necessity in the service of man that he should constantly be elevated higher and higher
(and therefore all these levels exist in the Holy Temple) –
a) Why were there no levels in the Tabernacle,
whose essence is also "and I will dwell in their midst,"
connected with the service of offerings etc. in the service of man,
and b) Why were there no levels of holiness in the Holy of Holies?!
The explanation regarding the difference between the Tabernacle and the Temple,
that "the entire Temple was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain,"
unlike the Tabernacle –
will be understood based on what is explained in the preceding discourse regarding the well-known question "Why is the service of offerings dependent specifically on the Temple,
unlike the other commandments and Torah study etc. and even the thought and speech of offerings which are the prayer corresponding to the offerings etc. can be fulfilled even when the Temple is not standing as well."
And it was explained,
that the effect of the physical offerings was,
that "in the offerings the revelation was in actual deed in the offering" in physicality,
and this effected a change in the revelation in the physicality of the world.
And even though the other commandments are also in physicality –
nevertheless there are levels in physicality itself:
"In all the commandments the revelation is in the soul,"
i.e., that even though one performs the commandment of tefillin physically on the physical hand and head,
one does not see in this a revealed change in physicality
[in order that a kind of change in physicality should be effected –
one must come to prayer (corresponding to the offerings),
which opens a new will,
as explained in the holy writings] –
and the main effect of the commandments is the revelation in the soul in spirituality;
און דער עיקר אויפטו פון די מצוות איז דער גילוי בנפש ברוחניות;
Unlike "in the offerings the revelation was in actual deed in the offering" in physicality,
to the extent that this opens up all the physicality of the world,
as explained in many places that in the offering of the offerings were all four categories of inanimate, vegetative, living, and speaking
(inanimate, vegetative, living, speaking):
"On all your offerings you shall offer salt" –
and salt is inanimate. Libations of wine,
and fine flour in the meal offering –
vegetative. The offering itself –
living. And at the time of the offering of the offerings were priests in their service, Levites on their platform, and Israelites in their standing –
speaking. And the offering of the offering –
offering from the term drawing near –
effects a drawing near until the secret of the Infinite One,
and draws this down in a revealed manner so that it changes the physicality of the inanimate, vegetative, living, and speaking.
And since the offerings effect a change in the revelation in the physicality of the world –
"such a revelation is impossible except in the Holy Temple, and therefore the offerings are dependent specifically on the Holy Temple,
unlike the other commandments and even the thought and speech of offerings can be even in exile, because the revelation in the soul can be at any time etc."
One sees from this that there are levels in the physical action through commandments:
Through most commandments,
the commandment of tefillin and the like,
the action is in the spirituality within physicality,
because it does not effect a revealed change in physicality.
Unlike offerings in the Holy Temple which effect in the physicality within physicality a revealed change.
And one also sees that specifically the physical Holy Temple is a prepared place and specifically that time was a prepared time for this drawing down and physical action through physical offerings which effect a revealed change in the physicality of the world.
Regarding this, one can explain the difference within the Sanctuary itself between the Tabernacle of the wilderness and the Holy Temple –
that although in both they offered offerings,
nevertheless there are levels in their action in the physicality of the world.
As explained in many places the difference between the Tabernacle and the Temple,
that the Tabernacle was a "temporary dwelling" for the Most High,
as it is said "and I went about in a tent,"
unlike the Holy Temple which was a permanent dwelling.
And as one explains the difference,
that the Tabernacle was primarily made of
(planks)
cedars,
acacia wood –
vegetative,
and the Holy Temple was primarily made of stones –
inanimate,
which is lower in physicality
(physicality within physicality)
than the vegetative category.
I.e., that the Holy Temple penetrated and permeated the physicality of the world more than the Tabernacle,
therefore it was built of stones,
inanimate.
And therefore the Beis HaMikdash was a permanent dwelling for the Holy One, blessed be He,
because the holiness of the Mikdash effected a change
(holiness)
in the physical place of the Mikdash,
therefore it remains a permanent dwelling.
However, the Mishkan effected a holiness in the place of the Mishkan in the desert only during the time that the Mishkan was there,
but afterwards the holiness did not remain,
and the earth of the Mishkan remained the earth of the desert
(not holiness),
therefore it is only a "temporary dwelling."
And according to this, one must explain why the matter of ascents in holiness permeated only the physical form of the Mikdash but not the Mishkan of the desert:
Because specifically the Beis HaMikdash effected a change in the physical earth of the Mikdash –
therefore,
since the higher Mikdash in spirituality
(in level)
over the places surrounding the Mikdash
(and so it must be in the service of man in holiness,
in a manner of ascent,
"they shall go from strength to strength")
it permeated the physical place and earth of the Mikdash,
that "the entire Mikdash was not on level ground but on the slope of the mountain."
And so too –
because in spiritual holiness the Women's Courtyard is higher than the "profane" in the Mikdash –
it effected in the physical earth of the Women's Courtyard,
that they built several steps between the rampart and the Women's Courtyard,
so that the Women's Courtyard would be higher.
And so too –
because the spiritual holiness of the Courtyard of Israel is higher than the Women's Courtyard,
and the Courtyard of the Priests is higher than the Courtyard of Israel,
and the Sanctuary is higher than the Courtyard of the Priests –
all this effected a change in the physical place and earth of these places in the Mikdash,
that they should be built several steps higher than the place before it.
However, in the Mishkan, which did not absorb and effect a change in the inner essence of the physical place and earth of the Mishkan in the desert
[during the time of its existence it did effect a change,
and so too the entire existence of the six hundred thousand of Israel in the desert effected a change in the place of the desert,
as explained in Tractate Shabbos regarding the law of the domain of the desert when the Jews were there;
כמבואר במס' שבת 174 בנוגע צו דין הרשות פון מדבר בשעת אידן זיינען דארטן געווען;
but after the Mishkan and the Jews left from there, it remained the place and earth of the desert) –
therefore the spiritual holiness in the Mishkan did not effect the physical place and earth of the Mishkan,
that the Mishkan should be on the slope of the mountain
(that it is not on level ground)
physically,
and so too the other parts in the Mishkan.
In what matters is this said –
that one place in the Beis HaMikdash was physically higher than the places below it in holiness
(spiritually) –
when it speaks about levels in holiness that are connected with above and below:
When, however, it speaks about the Holy of Holies
(which was both in the Mishkan and in the Beis HaMikdash),
which is entirely above the category of above and below,
there was the Foundation Stone from which the world was founded,
and above it was the Ark {and also after the destruction of the Temple the Ark remained there hidden,
in the language of our Sages, may their memory be blessed, *176 "for there the Ark is hidden"].
With the cherubim,
where "one cherub from this end" is "the end of Atzilus which is in Biyah",
the end of the worlds of Atzilus,
"and one cherub from the other end is the source of Biyah"
(as explained in Torah Ohr in the discourse "Ki" of the Admor, may his soul be at rest),
that is, a level that is above the category of above and below –
consequently, when it speaks about the Holy of Holies which is above the category of above and below,
it is not fitting to say that in order to arrive there one must ascend so many and so many
(thousands of thousands and so forth)
steps!
And one may elaborate on this,
and give to the wise and he will become wiser.
The explanation in today's lesson of the Rambam –
the contradiction between the laws of Issurei Biah and the laws of Melachim regarding conversion:
At first glance, one could explain the interpretation of the Rogatchover as follows, with an introduction:
The language of the Rambam in the laws of Melachim is "his sacrifice prevented him from becoming a complete convert and from being like all
(the fit of Israel etc. he has not yet become like the fit of Israel". And this is an unusual language –
the usual language for this is "a fit Israelite" (a righteous one,
a completely righteous one,
an incompletely righteous one,
an intermediate one and so forth) and not "the fit of Israel". One can, based on this, possibly say that the meaning of "the fit of Israel" is from the term qualification,
the time of fitness and so forth.
That is, then "his offering prevents him etc. from being like all the kosher Jews" means,
not that there is a lack in the kashrut of the convert himself,
he is a "kosher Israelite",
the lack is only in the qualification and the opportune time that –
that is, a matter external to him –
he should be able to eat sacred offerings. And in other words:
it is not a deficiency in the person
(in the convert),
only in the object of his eating of sacred offerings,
that as long as he does not bring an offering, this prevents him from being able to eat sacred offerings.
That is, it is not comparable to a stranger regarding eating of most holy offerings,
where in the case of a stranger there is indeed a deficiency in the person,
because for eating most holy offerings one needs a person who is a priest.
But in our case there is no deficiency in the person of the convert
(only in the opportune time,
in the object).
That this is even not comparable to what the Rambam writes in the Laws of Divorce, that what "his evil inclination overpowered him" does not affect the inner will of the person
(a Jew) –
because there it is still "his evil inclination overpowered him",
it compelled him,
but in our case the prevention is only from the outside and does not affect him).
And this is the explanation in the words of the Rogatchover "only regarding sacred offerings he is not yet called a complete Israelite, but regarding other matters he is like an Israelite for everything,
and therefore in this time he lacks nothing at all because of the offering" –
that there is no lack in the person of the convert,
only in the object of his eating of sacred offerings,
therefore "in this time he lacks nothing at all because of the offering".
It is, however, difficult to explain thus –
because,
as stated above:
the language of the Rambam is "his offering prevents him from being a complete convert",
that is, that the offering is a prevention and deficiency in the person
(that without the offering he is not a complete convert).
And also the language in the Rambam "kosher Israelites" – it is derived
(simply)
from the word kosher,
the opposite of invalid and forbidden
(to enter the congregation etc.),
although the usual expression for this is "kosher Israelite" and not the reverse
(as above),
that is, also a matter concerning the person
(that without the offering he is not like the kosher Israelites).
And in addition:
the Rogatchover himself explains explicitly
(in a second place *178)
in the Rambam –
that the explanation in the Laws of Those Who Lack Atonement is in the person,
that he is not in the sanctity of Israel
("before the offering of conversion...
he does not yet have the sanctity of Israel, as the Rambam wrote in the Laws of Those Who Lack Atonement") *.
And according to the simple meaning of the language of the Rogatchover, one can explain in another manner,
and precisely the language of the Rambam that "his offering prevents him"
(and not "makes him",
"converts him" etc.)
from being a complete convert"
that the intention is as simple –
that the offering prevents
(not "converts"),
and when there is no offering according to the Torah
(in this time) –
"a lion is lying in wait" *179 –
there is no prevention,
and therefore –
in the words of the Rogatchover –
"in this time he lacks nothing at all". And that "when the Temple is built, he will bring an offering" is the positive aspect
(and the essential)
of this offering –
that a convert is obligated in an offering.
And based on this, all these matters are understood:
how there is no contradiction between the Laws of Forbidden Relations and the Laws of Those Who Lack Atonement,
because they speak about two separate times,
in the Laws of Those Who Lack Atonement he speaks about the time of the Temple,
but in the law in the Laws of Forbidden Relations he speaks about this time –
"in this time when there is no offering
(according to the Torah)
circumcision and immersion are required" and with this he is a complete convert
(only "when the Temple is built, he will bring an offering").
And based on this it is also understood how this accords with the Epistle of the Rambam to Ovadiah the righteous convert.
And from this the instruction for all Jews now is also understood:
At the giving of the Torah, all Jews became converts who converted,
and then there were all three matters –
"with three things Israel entered the covenant: with circumcision, immersion, and an offering". And since the giving of the Torah is a continuous action every day, therefore one says every day in the blessing of the Torah "Giver of the Torah" in the present tense –
it is understood that also the matter of the conversion of Israel is continued every day,
that is, that every day Jews become converts anew.
And as is understood
(similar to this)
also from what is explained in the writings of the Ari,
brought in the Shulchan Aruch,
regarding the text of the morning blessing "Who did not make me a gentile",
for at first glance:
since a Jew is born a Jew –
he should have needed to recite this blessing only once,
why is it said every day?
It is explained,
that this blessing is on "the departure of his soul at night that a gentile soul did not cling to it" G-d forbid
(and similarly is the explanation regarding the blessing "Who did not make me a slave" etc.),
and therefore "also a convert may recite this blessing".
According to this, it comes out that every day a Jew is like a convert who converted anew
(and therefore he recites the blessing "Who has not made me a gentile" every day).
One has the study from what is explained above –
that a person should not, heaven forbid, think that during the time of exile, when there is double and multiplied darkness, when there is no sacrifice,
something is lacking in him as a Jew
(a convert who converts anew each day),
rather he should know that since the giving of the Torah, when "Israel entered into the covenant" through three things,
which is an action that continues for all times
(as mentioned above) –
Jews are in completeness without any deficiency,
"lacking nothing at all",
and even though a Jew sinned, he is *184,
and nothing can change this!
And if something is lacking by a Jew during the time of exile –
he must know that this is not a deficiency in him,
rather an external matter that is outside of him,
And by him it is only lacking
(in the language of his honor, my teacher and father-in-law, the Rebbe)
that he should fasten the buttons of the uniform,
the priestly garments,
for the uniform and the buttons are here in his possession,
he only needs to fasten them –
and then immediately comes Mashiach our righteousness in the true and complete redemption!
And one can connect this, in a possible manner, with the Mishnah in Pirkei Avot –
"Make His will like your will, so that He will make your will like His will":
The concept of "matters of piety" in this –
will be understood through the precision of the language "Make His will like your will",
similar to "a satisfaction before Me that I spoke and My will was done",
and not like the usual expression "fulfill His will"
(the fulfillment of the commandments)
and it applies both to positive commandments
(in the manner of doing)
and to negative commandments
(in the manner of refraining,
not in the manner of "doing"):
"Make His will" is from the expression "they do the will of the Omnipresent",
as explained in Chassidus, the interpretation of this,
that a Jew creates a new will in the One Above
(and is not merely fulfilling the will of God from before).
And this is what the Mishnah says here –
as "matters of piety" –
"Make His will like your will":
According to law, a person does not need to create a new will in the One Above. But according to the attribute of piety, "Make His will like your will", a Jew must create a new will in the One Above, that the will of the One Above should be "like your will",
like the will of the Jew.
And one of the concepts in this:
Even though one finds oneself in exile,
and simply –
because it is now the will of God that Jews should be in exile –
nevertheless, the Mishnah gives a directive –
and one who errs in a matter of Mishnah returns,
there cannot be an error in Mishnah –
that "Make His will like your will":
A person must create a new will in the One Above,
that the will of the Holy One, blessed be He, should become like the will of a Jew –
that one must go out of exile immediately and at once!
If – he argues –
it is not his way to demand and create a new will in the One Above,
and to cry out "Until when?" and "Let the redemption already be",
he relies on the will of the One Above,
and when the One Above will want,
He will take out the Jews from exile?!
One tells him that it is a directive in the Mishnah –
"Make His will like your will":
Create a new will in the One Above,
"like your will",
that one should already go out of exile,
and through the fact that you cry out truly that one already wants the redemption,
and words that come from the heart enter the heart,
"as water reflects a face to a face, so the heart of man to man",
including to the heart of the Supernal Man –
one effects in the One Above the will to take out the Jews from exile!
A question can be asked –
that it is indeed true that "make His will like your will",
to take out the Jews from exile is a good thing,
but perhaps this is not a matter connected with the service of God,
which is the essence of a Jew –
"I was created to serve my Creator"?
The Mishnah continues –
"Make His will like your will, so that He will make your will like His will":
The very thing that "Make His will like your will",
one creates a new will in the One Above
(in this case –
to take out the Jews from exile),
is itself a matter of the service of God, to serve my Creator –
"so that He will make your will like His will".
And on the contrary:
This is the greatest concept in the service of God –
the service of God that consists of creating a new will in the One Above –
the concept of "the will of wills"!
Therefore, a Jew says:
Why do you need to occupy yourself with serving the Supreme One in matters that come down below in the world by means of sefirot and barriers and screens and contractions,
in a manner of shattering and falling and descent, etc. –
when you can serve the Supreme One in a matter of "ra'ava d'ra'avin",
to create a new will in the Supreme One that He should take out the Jews from exile and the like –
"Do His will as your will, so that He will do your will as His will"!
And therefore it is understood,
that if there is a wild beast that comes to argue,
that one cannot yet go out from exile,
because this one is not worthy for it and that one is not worthy,
and the will of Hashem is that the Jews should still remain in exile,
with all these arguments in this matter –
one answers,
that they are wild beasts that are preventing the redemption,
and they hold themselves in exile and other Jews and all Jews in exile,
and the Shechinah in exile and the entire order of the chain of descent in exile – Heaven forbid!...
And who then can be the one who comes and says that he knows what is the will of the Omnipresent,
and that the will of the Omnipresent is –
that the Jews and the Shechinah and the entire order of the chain of descent should remain in exile?!...
One has thereby the instruction from the Mishnah –
that a part of the service of Hashem
("so that He will do your will as His will") is,
that a Jew must create a will above –
"Do His will as your will" –
to bring immediately and at once the true and complete redemption.
And may it be His will that through the fact that Jews cry out and demand during the time of exile that the redemption should already come –
one will surely effect with the Supreme One,
and immediately and at once,
while still in exile,
one will insert the aleph of the Aluf of the world into "golah",
it will immediately become "geulah",
And Mashiach our righteousness comes immediately,
as discussed above –
Mashiach comes immediately on Shabbat Parshat Mas'ei 5744 in this study hall,
and we all pray together the Minchah prayer of this Shabbat in the "Mikdash Adonai konenu yadecha",
and in the blink of an eye literally!
His Holy Honor the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, began to sing the melody "Let the redemption already be".
Afterwards he hinted to the holy shaliach tzibbur, may he live, to sing "May it be His will, etc., that the Holy Temple be built speedily in our days, and give us our portion in Your Torah".
Afterwards he himself began to sing "Niet niet nikava".
Here is the place to mention again
(as was spoken in previous years)
about the matter of "that which is dependent on time" –
that in these days of "Bein HaMetzarim" one should study the matters in Torah about the building of the Holy Temple –
the laws of the Chosen House of the Rambam,
and before that –
Masechet Middot,
and before that –
the chapters in Yechezkel that speak about the building of the Temple.
And in addition to this, one should specifically in these days do in "Zion shall be redeemed with justice and her captives with charity" –
an increase in the study of Torah
(justice),
and the giving of charity,
both in the physical,
and in the spiritual in matters of love of Israel,
including and especially the general and particular campaigns.
And through the resolution in all this,
even of an individual,
all the more so a resolution of many,
all the more so of a congregation –
the Supreme One already pays reward for the very resolution and accomplishes the matters that need to be accomplished,
as the ruling in Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim
(as discussed many times),
Speedily in our days literally,
in our lifetime,

and with joy and a good heart.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will surely make a final blessing.
