English translation 1
As discussed many times,
As discussed many times,
every Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh has both a general aspect
(which makes it similar to other Shabbatot Mevarchim),
and a particular and unique aspect due to the specific month it blesses,
in our case –
the month of Adar Rishon. And it is also hinted in its name in the Holy Tongue –
"Chodesh",
which means that at that time a new and unique matter is renewed
(which did not exist in the previous months).
And the blessing
(of Shabbat Mevarchim)
always comes from the previous month,
in our case –
the month of Shevat,
i.e., that from the month of Shevat the month of Adar Rishon is blessed.
And seemingly this is a contradiction:
On one hand, we say that "chodesh" is from the term "chiddush" (renewal)2,
at that time a new and unique matter is renewed from the perspective of the new month
(which does not exist in the previous months);
(וואס איז ניטא אין די חדשים שלפנ"ז);
and together with this we say that the blessing and power for this month come from the previous month
(i.e., it is not a new thing)?!
We find an analogy to this in several blessings:
Regarding the general service of the mitzvot, we say that this is "our deeds and our work",
and together with this the formula of the blessing over the mitzvot is –
"Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us",
that the Almighty commanded us His mitzvot.
Similarly regarding the Torah:
When one studies Torah properly, we say that the Torah is "called by his name"3,
to the extent that "a teacher who forgives his honor,
his honor is forgiven"4,
because "the Torah is mine",
"since he learned and reviewed it, it is called his Torah"5,
it is his Torah over which he can forgive;
ס'איז זיין תורה אויף וועלכער ער קען מוחל זיין;
together with this one recites
(before Torah study)
the blessing over the Torah –
"and He gave us His Torah",
the Torah of the Almighty.
Thus, just as regarding the service of Torah and mitzvot –
which is indeed a particular service each and every day of the month –
both extremes exist together,
that it is related to the person
("our deeds and our work",
and "the Torah is mine");
און "תורה דילי' היא");
and together with this the blessing upon it is "Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us",
"and He gave us His Torah" –
so too is it regarding a general matter –
the matter of a month
(because in relation to the fulfillment of Torah and mitzvot in particular on each and every day of the month, the month is a general matter),
that each month has its new and unique matter which relates specifically to this month;
אז יעדער חודש האט זיין ענין חדש ומיוחד וואס איז זיך מתייחס דוקא לחודש זה;
and together with this the blessing of the month
(on Shabbat Mevarchim)
is in the previous month,
from a second place.
And in our case –
the month of Adar Rishon has its new and unique matter;
חודש אדר ראשון האט זיין ענין חדש ומיוחד;
and together with this the blessing of this month is on Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh which occurs in the previous month –
the month of Shevat.
From this it is also understood that there must be a connection between the month of Shevat and the month of Adar Rishon,
since from the month of Shevat Adar Rishon is blessed.
And although seemingly it is necessary that from the month of Shevat the month of Adar Rishon be blessed,
because Shabbat Mevarchim must always be before the month it blesses,
and the month of Shevat is always the month before Adar Rishon,
consequently it is forced that from the month of Shevat Adar Rishon is blessed,
it is impossible otherwise –
consequently what certainty is there that between them there is a connection from which one must learn?
But the truth is not so:
In human action one can say that when he does a thing in proximity to another thing due to a specific reason,
the two things have a connection between them in that particular aspect,
but not necessarily in other aspects. Because after he has done the preceding thing, it is necessarily and automatically that they come in proximity to each other;
אבער לאו דוקא בשאר הפרטים. ווייל לאחרי ווי ער האט געטאן די פריערדיקע זאך איז דאך בהכרח ובדרך ממילא אז זיי זאלן קומען בסמיכות זל"ז;
When one speaks, however, about the work of Hashem's hands,
the Most High,
that He is the "most impossible of the impossible"6,
and this descends below in the Torah and the commandments –
then when He arranged that two things come in proximity to each other
(in our case –
the month of Adar Rishon in proximity to the month of Shevat),
this is precise to the utmost in all details
(not only in one detail and the other details come incidentally)
[from which emerges (also) a practical difference in halachah7,
as discussed many times8],
because He could have made
(being the most impossible of the impossible)
that the month of Adar Rishon should not be blessed from the month of Shevat
(in any manner whatsoever),
therefore, when Adar Rishon is indeed blessed from the month of Shevat –
this is certainly with utmost precision,
and certainly they have a connection between them. And therefore there is in this a lesson by way of example as we find in several places in the Torah,
that Rashi learns from the juxtaposition of the portions,
"Why was this portion juxtaposed, etc."9].
Therefore, one must understand the connection between the months of Shevat and Adar Rishon,
that the month of Shevat blesses the month of Adar Rishon –
for at first glance they are completely opposite:
(The month of) Adar
(Rishon)
is from the term "Adir10 BaMarom Hashem"11.
That is, it is connected to a most elevated matter –
"Marom" (on high),
and there itself –
"Adir BaMarom" (mighty on high). And in general, this is the matter of miraculous conduct.
In contrast, the month of Shevat is a month among the rest of the months,
and it has no special days. And to such an extent that even the New Year for Trees
(on the fifteenth of Shevat12)
is, from the standpoint of the essence of the matter, not a festival and not a day when Tachanun is not recited,
and regarding the non-recitation of Tachanun, one must arrive at the reason that because it coincides with the other New Years,
this reveals and teaches that also on this day Tachanun is not recited
(as discussed in the farbrengen of the fifteenth of Shevat13).
And one may add:
Also the matter of "explaining this Torah"14 which took place during the entire month of Shevat,
with which it is distinguished from the rest of the months
(as discussed in the previous farbrengen15) –
emphasizes that no new matter was innovated,
but rather "explaining this Torah" which already existed previously.
Exactly the opposite of the month of Adar –
when a new matter is innovated,
and to such an extent –
that this is connected with miracles,
"Adir BaMarom Hashem".
And nevertheless, it is said that specifically the month of Shevat blesses the month of Adar Rishon!
The explanation for this is –
that this is precisely the point:
We find in several matters that the blessing comes specifically from an opposite place. Because then the blessing has a stronger force,
due to the advantage of light from darkness and the advantage of wisdom from folly16. When even an opposite matter
(not only is not opposed, but)
blesses, this is the most sublime blessing.
In the manner explained17 regarding Yitro, that when he said "Now I know, etc."18,
it contained within it the most sublime elevation of the advantage of light from darkness and the advantage of wisdom from folly.
Thus, one will also understand in our case –
but in our case,
when speaking about months of holiness
[which "they (the Jewish people) are destined to be renewed like her"],
it is not applicable to say the advantage of light from darkness in the mundane sense
(as with Yitro),
rather, within holiness itself there are also levels,
and in general –
two modes of drawing down,
a drawing down from the place of light and a drawing down from the place of "He made darkness His hiding place"19
(in holiness)20,
and due to this level, the advantage of light from darkness is applicable also in holiness:
There is a drawing down of light,
which is a most sublime drawing down,
as explained in Iggeret HaKodesh21 that since "the light is similar to the luminary, it is His essence and substance, blessed be He," and specifically "He alone, in His power and ability, can create something from nothing, etc.",
therefore, in light there is the power of bringing into being something from nothing,
to the point that this descends into "the illumination of the illumination of the illumination...
in all created, formed, and made beings"22,
because light is similar to the luminary.
Afterwards, there is another type of drawing down –
from "He made darkness His hiding place",
this is called "darkness",
because it is a level that is higher than the highest level in light.
That is, it is not merely higher than the level of light,
for even in light there are levels: light,
and illumination,
illumination of illumination,
and illumination of illumination of illumination –
rather, it is incomparably higher,
therefore it is called "darkness" even relative to the highest level of light. This is the level of the essence of the luminary.
And during the blessing and drawing down that comes from this place –
"He set darkness as His hiding place" –
this is the most sublime blessing,
the advantage of light from the darkness of holiness.
Based on this, the matter that the month of Shevat blesses the month of Adar Rishon is understood:
From the very fact that the month of Shevat is a simple month,
and then there are no revelations
(in the aspect of light),
it shows that this is connected to a level that is higher than revelations –
"He set darkness",
higher than the level of the month of Adar
(Rishon),
"Mighty on high is Hashem",
the aspect of light and revelation. Therefore, the blessing for the month of Adar Rishon specifically comes from the month of Shevat –
because in this there is the most sublime blessing.
This matter has a special connection to our generation:
In the month of Shevat is also the day of the hillula of the Nasi of our generation,
His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
of whom it is said "the Nasi is everything"23 and "his heart is the heart of the entire congregation of Israel"24,
and "just as below he stands and serves, so too here he stands and serves"25 on high,
and holiness does not depart from its place26.
And as a simple person understands simply,
the matter of histalkus is connected with darkness,
it is a matter opposite to good. Afterwards, when he learns "Ein Yaakov" he sees that it is a most terrifying matter –
"The death of the righteous is equivalent to the burning of the House of our God"27.
Nevertheless, the Alter Rebbe explains in Igeres HaKodesh, Siman Zayin and Siman Ches
(as discussed in the farbrengens of before28)
the elevation that comes about through histalkus,
until then it "works salvations in the midst of the land"29.
For this is the reason:
The matter of histalkus is connected with the most sublime place –
the aspect of "He set darkness as His hiding place",
which is higher than all revelations. And when one draws forth a drawing from this place,
it is a most sublime drawing
(higher than the drawings from the aspect of revelation),
until it "works salvations in the midst of the land":
From the level of "salvations",
which is a most sublime level,
it is drawn down,
in a manner of "works",
into the "midst of the land",
this lowly world, lower than which there is none,
and there itself –
"in the midst of the land".
And based on this, it is also understood regarding the blessing of the month of Adar Rishon from the month of Shevat:
When one draws forth that also from the matter of the histalkus of the Nasi of our generation a blessing should be drawn
(on Shabbos Mevarchim)
into the month of Adar Rishon –
this is the most sublime blessing,
from "He set darkness as His hiding place",
which has the advantage of the advantage of light from darkness etc.
Also the month of Adar Rishon is connected with a sublime level –
"Mighty on high is Hashem",
but within "on high" itself there are levels,
and Adar is connected with the aspect of light and revelation in "on high"
("Mighty on high"),
in contrast, the matter of histalkus is connected with the level of "He set darkness as His hiding place" on high,
and when the blessing and drawing comes from this level on high,
that "just as below he stands and serves, so too here he stands and serves" on high,
which is even higher within "on high" itself than "Mighty on high is Hashem",
it brings about an elevation in "Mighty on high is Hashem"
(the month of Adar Rishon).
The above discussion is regarding Shabbos Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon in all years;
המדובר לעיל איז בנוגע שבת מברכים ראש חודש אדר ראשון בכל השנים;
in this year a special matter comes into this –
that it is a leap year:
As discussed many times previously regarding this year, the advantage of a leap year,
that then there is more completeness than in other years,
for its purpose is to align the lunar year with the solar year30,
by adding a month of so many days which completes the lunar year,
consequently it is understood that in this year there is more completeness also in spirituality than in other years which do not have as many days.
That is, in this year greater powers are given to do the avodah.
Within a leap year itself there are differences:
All of them have a thirteenth month,
but there are differences in how many days there are in the leap year. And in this year the leap year has the most days that a leap year can have –
385 days,
for all the months that can be full,
are full.
This indicates that in this year one has the greatest completeness –
the most powers –
that can possibly be,
and more than this cannot and need not be,
for if more were needed, there would be more.
Based on this, one will understand the additional elevation on Shabbos Mevarchim Adar Rishon in this year:
The emphasis and certainty that it is a leap year,
and the completeness of powers that one possesses then,
is specifically on Shabbos Mevarchim Adar Rishon.
Even though one already knows about this at the beginning of the year,
in the month of Tishrei –
but then it is not yet absolutely certain that it will be a leap year. Because "even though he may tarry" is "I believe with perfect faith in the coming of Moshiach" and "I await him every day that he will come"31,
so when Moshiach will come after the month of Tishrei, then the sanctification of the month will be based on sighting,
it could then cause a confusion in all the calculations,
and it could be that the year becomes a regular year;
און עס קען זיין אז די שנה זאל ווערן א שנה פשוטה;
But when it comes to Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon,
when one blesses in a holy place and in public Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon,
which emphasizes that there is a Second Adar and consequently a leap year –
then it is certainly definite that the year is a leap year.
And even though between Shabbat Mevarchim and Rosh Chodesh there are several days,
Moshiach could nevertheless come in the meantime
[and especially at the conclusion of Shabbat,
when at that time there is the "meal of David, King Moshiach"32,
all the more so "and it was evening and it was morning" –
on the following day],
and seemingly there could be a confusion of the calculations,
and it would be determined that the year is a regular year –
But from this very thing, that according to halachah and Jewish custom, Jews bless
(with a blessing)
in a holy place
(in the synagogue)
and in public Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon
(which emphasizes that the year is a leap year) –
it is proven that if Moshiach comes in the meantime, he will not change this matter.
What is the practical difference and the difference between them of this entire discussion;
למאי נפק"מ ומאי בינייהו פון דער גאנצע שקו"ט;
It is indeed a discussion and dialectic,
and one can debate it and ask a question and counter-question,
and offer a better rationale –
but there must be a practical difference and a difference between them regarding the service of man.
So the matter in the service of man is –
that standing at Shabbat Mevarchim Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon,
a Jew knows with certainty that in this year he has the greatest completeness of powers to perform his service,
consequently he does it with the greatest impetus.
In contrast, beforehand,
he did not know so certainly that the year would be a leap year
(because he believes in the coming of Moshiach and it is possible that there will be a change in the calculations),
consequently the impetus in his service is not as great.
And furthermore, there is even more impetus in the service, knowing that the blessing of Shabbat Mevarchim Adar Rishon is from the month of Shevat,
from the aspect of "He made darkness His hiding place",
one has the most elevated powers to perform the service during the month of Adar Rishon.
It only needs to be "stand ready, all of you"33 to receive the powers and bring them from potential to actual,
in this physical world,
"in the midst of the land",
i.e., in actual deed,
and on the contrary –
the deed is the main thing34.
And since it is also the day of Shabbat,
whose essence is delight and "all your work is done"35 –
one also has the power that the service should be without toil and without exertion,
only out of delight. Even though also on the day of Shabbat there is the service of man,
because "each day performs its service"36,
also on Shabbat –
but on Shabbat the performance of service is out of delight,
as discussed many times that when one acts out of delight, even difficult work and labor, one does not feel any exhaustion. An example of this in halachah:
One for whom "it is a delight not to eat
(on Shabbat)
should not eat"37 because that is his pleasure.
And since on this Shabbat Mevarchim
(Adar Rishon)
one has all these elevated powers incomparably more than one has at other times –
so when one utilizes them in actual practice,
one also has incomparably greater success.
Until the success of the coming of Moshiach our righteousness in the true and complete redemption,
Which also has a special connection with this month –
Adar Rishon –
because in this month there is at least the matter of Purim Katan. For Purim is connected with the redemption,
as the Gemara38 says "connecting redemption to redemption",
according to Rashi's commentary –
"the redemption of Pesach to the redemption of Purim".
And then –
in the true and complete redemption –
will be the perfection of "And these are the ordinances which you shall set before them"
(the beginning of our portion),
because then will be "And I will restore your judges as at first"
(as explained in the Midrashim39),
In the true and complete redemption through Moshiach our righteousness,
and out of joy and goodness of heart,
until in a manner of immediately.
On Shabbat Mevarchim Adar Rishon
(as on every Shabbat Mevarchim)
itself there is another matter and an important matter –
on which day of the month it occurs. This year it occurs on the 24th of Shevat. From this there must be a lesson and instruction.
In order to know what happened on 24 Shevat –
in our generation,
because of that which "the time is pressing
(in the Mishnah)
"40,
" 40,
there is a book that saves searching,
because it gathers all the events in the Written Torah and the Oral Torah that occurred on each and every day –
the book "Dvar Yom B'yomo".
Parenthetical remark:
According to what was said, that because "the time is pressing
(in the Mishnah)" –
therefore in our generation there are books that gather everything together in an organized manner and through this they save searching –
one can also explain that which specifically in these latter generations there are several books –
anthology books,
encyclopedic works,
encyclopedias
(in the vernacular),
where they have gathered and arranged topics in Torah in an organized manner from Alef to Beit,
so that everyone can very easily find what he needs.
Not only do these books arrange the topics in the order of the Shulchan Aruch,
which is also a simple order,
[As we see that when one asks a yeshiva student where in the Shulchan Aruch the laws of mixtures are discussed –
he argues:
Did they not find someone better to ask? Because even a one-day student knows that this is in the Yoreh De'ah section of the Shulchan Aruch!
When one asks a Chabadnik,
he says that it is also discussed in...
the Orach Chayim section,
in the laws of Pesach,
where there are more details in the laws of mixtures that are not in Yoreh De'ah...]:
But the books that were made specifically in these generations arrange the topics in an even simpler order –
in alphabetical order,
which is relevant to absolutely everyone. Even if he does not know the entire topic. But he knows the beginning of the article and the topic
(according to the simple meaning,
the homiletic interpretation,
the allusion or the secret)
or the name of the topic –
he can easily find it in these books.
And the reason why specifically in these generations we have this –
is as above:
Because of the decline of the generations,
and "the time is pressing
(in the Mishnah)" –
"its flaw is its remedy" –
it was made with Divine Providence that there should be anthology books that will make learning easier by gathering all the topics in an organized manner,
according to alphabetical order.
[In previous generations there was also the book "Pachad Yitzchak" –
but:
(a) The book was not so widespread;
(א) דער ספר איז ניט געווען אזוי נפוץ;
(b) The collection in this book is of topics that are more connected with dialectics,
and not so much with halachah.
In contrast, in these generations we have books (encyclopedias) that are widespread,
and they are anthology books of topics connected with halachah].
And the benefit
("its remedy")
in this is not only for simple people who do not know how to find the topics in their original places,
but also for scholars who know how to learn –
because by using these books one saves time on searching for a topic by oneself,
and relying on one's own memory,
where sometimes one remembers where a topic is and sometimes one does not –
one can better utilize the time to delve into that topic,
with sharpness,
uprooting mountains and grinding them against each other42 in depth,
elaboration and the like;
הרחבה וכיו"ב;
instead of using the time to search for the topic –
he can engage with the "stone with which he wrestles"143
One sees from this the "remedy" that came about specifically through "its flaw" of "the time is pressing
(in the Mishnah)
" in these latter generations –
through the books that save using time to search for topics in Torah.
And would that one utilize these books,
and use the saved time to delve more deeply into the study of Torah.
Not like those who are ashamed to look into these books –
lest one suspect him that he is not an expert,
consequently he does not have these books with him! On the contrary:
The intention of looking into these books is not that he should use the saved time to go for a walk,
but rather that instead of relying on his own memory,
where sometimes he remembers where a topic is and sometimes he does not,
and instead of using the time to search for the topic,
he can use it to engage with the "stone with which he wrestles",
to delve into the topic, etc.
This is the lesson from the fact that in our generation we have all these books of collections,
including the book "Devar Yom BeYomo" which gathers all the events in Tanach and Oral Torah that happened each day –
and therefore they mention the book by name –
in order that one should utilize the books for locked time to oneself to search and utilize the time to delve into the subjects etc.
Returning to our subject –
in the book "Devar Yom BeYomo" –
one need not be an expert in Tanach –
the verse in Zechariah is brought which tells what happened on the 24th of Shevat.
They once asked the Rogatchover where a certain subject is found,
he said in tractate Sanhedrin on such and such a page. Afterwards they pointed out to him that it is actually found in a verse! Only because the Rogatchover was then occupied with the study of tractate Sanhedrin etc. and that verse is brought there;
האט ער געזאגט אין מס' סנהדרין אין דעם און דעם דף. דערנאך האט מען אים מעיר געווען אז דאס שטייט גאר אין א פסוק! נאר וויבאלד אז דער ראָגאַטשאווער האט זיך דעמולט עוסק געווען אין לימוד מס' סנהדרין וכו' און יענער פסוק ברענגט זיך דארטן;
however, Scripture he learned when he was a child,
and the matter of "Shnayim Mikra VeEchad Targum"
(which the Rogatchover certainly fulfilled) –
is not in the manner of study etc. –
therefore he said that it is in tractate Sanhedrin.
The lesson from this:
Even when one knows that a subject is in the Gemara,
and there a verse is brought –
one must look up and also note the verse,
because: (a)
This is relevant to the completeness of understanding the subject. (b)
Because there are mockers who might suspect –
if one will only note the Gemara –
that one did not review the weekly portion on Shabbos eve,
therefore one must look up and also note the verse;
דערפאר דארף מען נאכקוקן און אויך אנצייכענען דעם פסוק;
in order not to cause oneself to stumble nor to cause the other to stumble.
The point that is in Zechariah 44
(as brought in the book "Devar Yom BeYomo")
regarding the 24th of Shevat
[and when one will look inside Zechariah oneself one will see more details in this that are appropriate for this time]:
"On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shevat, the word of Hashem came to Zechariah etc.",
and among the things the prophecy tells that they said "We have walked through the land and behold the entire land is settled and at rest" 45,
"We saw the tranquility of the nations and Israel in distress
(of exile)" 46
[which the state of exile is also hinted in the "red horse" and "red horses" 47 that walked through the land,
as is known that Edom is the aspect of Gevurot 48],
and therefore 46
(since Jews are in distress and nations sit in tranquility)
"the angel of Hashem answered and said, Hashem of Hosts, how long will You not have mercy on Jerusalem and the cities of Judah etc." 49.
And continuing from this, Zechariah the prophet says 50 "And the angel who spoke with me said to me
(to Zechariah)
Proclaim saying, thus said Hashem of Hosts etc. I am greatly angry at the complacent nations
(as was said earlier 51 that they are "settled and at rest" 52),
for I was a little angry and they helped for evil",
"I was a little angry at Israel to exile them from their land,
and 'a little' is relative to the evil they did to Israel after their exile",
"and they helped for evil –
to do evil to them excessively" 53,
"I was a little angry at Israel and they
(the nations)
added" 54.
That is, what aroused the anger of the Most High against the nations
("I am greatly angry at the nations") –
that even though Jews are in distress in exile, the nations are "complacent",
they sit quietly and peacefully,
and in utmost tranquility without any worry
(which is the meaning of "complacent"),
and the nations "helped for evil",
they added in distressing and doing evil to Jews,
more than "I was a little angry" at Jews.
"Therefore thus said Hashem
(because the nations distress Jews so much in exile)
I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy, My house shall be built in it, says Hashem of Hosts, and a measuring line shall be stretched over Jerusalem etc.,
Again shall My cities overflow with goodness, and Hashem shall again comfort Zion and shall again choose Jerusalem" 55.
And since the prophecy of Zechariah was written,
it is a sign that it is a prophecy that was needed for generations,
because "Many prophets arose for Israel...
[and nevertheless not all of them were recorded,
because]
a prophecy that was needed for generations was written, and that which was not needed was not written" 56.
Therefore there must be a lesson from this in our time:
Since Jews are also now in exile –
we also now have a claim against "the complacent nations,
for I was a little angry and they helped for evil".
One must understand:
Since the Holy One, blessed be He, sent Jews into exile
(and it was not gentiles who did this, Heaven forbid) –
what claim can one have against gentiles that they are "complacent";
וואס פאר א טענה קען מען האבן צו גוים אז זיי זיינען "שאננים";
were gentiles commanded that they must be distressed when Jews are in exile? This is seemingly not among the Seven Commandments of the Sons of Noah? And regarding adding new matters to the Seven Commandments –
there are several conditions and limitations regarding this57.
And even that "they helped to do evil",
that they added to this "to harm them excessively" –
this itself comes because of Jews. For "In the beginning"58 –
for the sake of the Torah which is called "beginning" and for the sake of Israel who are called "beginning"59,
consequently it is impossible that anything should happen to Jews that does not originate from Jews themselves,
rather it is necessary that something is lacking in Jews.
That is, since there is a deficiency in Jews, therefore this causes the Holy One, blessed be He, to strengthen their exile among the gentiles,
but not that the gentiles do this on their own accord, seemingly,
in the language of the Tanya60 that "they do not change their role",
they only carry out the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He –
consequently, what claim does one have against gentiles for this?!
So the answer to this61 –
that this is indeed included in the Seven Commandments of the Sons of Noah:
One of the Seven Commandments of the Sons of Noah is the prohibition of eating a limb from a living animal62. And the reason for the matter:
In order not to cause pain to a living creature. Therefore a gentile may eat a limb from a dead animal63,
but not a limb from a living animal,
because it is a pain for the living creature to take its limb while it is still alive.
From this it is understood a fortiori that a gentile is commanded not to cause pain to a human being.
And regarding this, when he sees that a human being is in pain –
he may not remain silent and calm,
rather he must cry out and make a commotion and do everything dependent on him –
so that the person should not be in pain. And then this also enters into another commandment that gentiles are obligated in –
the commandment of charity64,
that he should help other people
[in addition to the other commandments that they have –
laws, etc.].
Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, has a claim against "complacent gentiles" when Jews are in exile:
Since a gentile is commanded not to cause pain to a living creature
(a limb from a living animal),
all the more so a human being,
and to perform charity –
how is it possible that they are "complacent" when Jews suffer from being in exile?!
All the more so when "they helped to do evil". The gentiles even add to causing pain and doing evil to Jews!
It is true indeed that the Holy One, blessed be He, sent them into exile
(and it was not gentiles who did this) –
but a gentile is commanded that he should be troubled and pained when another person is in distress,
consequently he must cry out and storm –
how is it possible that Jews are in distress from the exile where they were placed
(the opposite of "complacent").
And all the more so that the gentile may not add to this and further cause pain to a Jew
("they helped to do evil").
And as explained in the Igrot Kodesh*64 that "even though a person who has free will curses him or strikes him or damages his property and is liable in human courts and in heavenly courts for his evil choice,
nevertheless, regarding the injured party it was already decreed from heaven, and there are many agents for the Omnipresent, etc.":
Although "regarding the injured party it was already decreed from heaven",
one has a claim against the injurer "for his evil choice".
And so in our case:
The Holy One, blessed be He, indeed placed Jews in exile,
but this is no excuse for the injuring gentile that he should
(choose to)
be the one who causes pain to Jews,
all the more so to add more than what the Holy One, blessed be He, did.
Therefore,
even though the Holy One, blessed be He, sent Jews into exile,
a gentile must first and foremost empathize with the pain of Jews,
and all the more so not add to causing pain to Israel
("helped to do evil"),
rather the gentile must ensure that the exile be only as much as is necessary, inevitably, from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He
("I was angry for a little while"),
that is, the exile that Jews are in is sufficient
(for example)
"in a land not theirs"65,
with which one already fulfills the matter of exile from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He,
and gentiles need not add more to this.
But when the nations are "at ease,"
and all the more so "they helped to worsen [the situation]" –
this "arouses" the anger of the Supreme One,
"I am greatly angered against the nations that are at ease, for I was but a little angry, and they helped to worsen [the situation]."
For example, as it was in the Egyptian exile:
The Supreme One is the One who sent the Jews into the Egyptian exile
(and not, heaven forbid, that the nations did this),
as He said to Avraham Avinu at the Covenant Between the Parts, "Your seed shall be a stranger in a land not theirs"65. But this itself could have been only as necessary from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He,
that they should be "in a land not theirs,"
which is already exile,
and no more,
so that then the aspect of exile from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He, would have been fulfilled,
and there would have been no extra suffering. And on the contrary:
Even while being "in a land not theirs," Jews can live relatively comfortably.
As it was with Yaakov Avinu:
The 17
(numerically equivalent to "go down"66)
years that the Jews were in the Egyptian exile
("in a land not theirs")
began from Yaakov's descent to the land of Egypt,
for already then the exile "in a land not theirs" began,
not "in the land of his father's sojournings
(in the land of Canaan)
"67.
" 67.
Nevertheless, we see that Yaakov then lived in the land of Goshen,
"the best of the land,"68
and not only did he have good in material matters,
but also in spiritual matters –
as it is written69 "And he sent Yehudah before him... to show the way before him to Goshen,"
"to establish for him a house of study from which instruction would go forth."70
And on the contrary:
It is made into a great storm71 that those 17 years that Yaakov lived in Egypt were his best years,
17 being numerically equivalent to "good"
(were it not for the fact that this was "in a land not theirs")!
And in addition, then too
(after Yaakov's descent to Egypt)
the matter was drawn forth that Pharaoh appointed Yosef as viceroy,72
until "without you no man shall lift his hand or his foot."73 And it was understood even by the Egyptians then that due to the honor of a father
[which even the nations then accepted upon themselves.
As Rashi explains74 regarding Avraham and Terach]
Yosef would have fulfilled everything that Yaakov wanted,
therefore the power that Yaakov then had is understood, even though he was "in a land not theirs."
One could have thus fulfilled the exile of 17 years "in a land not theirs,"
having thereby all matters of good and expansion.
We are not even speaking about the "four hundred years" that the Supreme One promised that the Jews would be in exile,
which is counted from the birth of Yitzchak75 –
which these years also include when Yitzchak and Yaakov were in the land of Canaan, even not "in a land not theirs";
וואס שנים אלו זיינען אויך כולל ווען יצחק ויעקב זיינען געווען אין ארץ כנען אפילו ניט "בארץ לא להם";
but even the 17 years while being "in a land not theirs" –
could also have been in a good manner, as it was with Yaakov. And with this, the exile from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He, would have been fulfilled.
But because afterwards there was "Come, let us deal wisely with him"76 by Pharaoh and the Egyptians,
and they added to the exile and suffering of Israel
(more than was necessary from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He) –
"they helped to worsen [the situation]." "To harm them excessively" –
therefore they were punished,77
because not only were they "at ease,"
but "they helped to worsen [the situation]."
Similarly regarding the other exiles of the Jews –
the Babylonian exile,
the Assyrian exile and the Edomite exile, etc. –
that the Supreme One indeed sent the Jews into exile,
but from the nations it is demanded that they not be "at ease,"
and all the more so not "help to worsen [the situation],"
more than was necessary from the side of the Holy One, blessed be He,
For a gentile is commanded that he should feel pain when another person suffers
(all the more so from a limb from a living animal,
the suffering of a living creature),
and he should give charity and help other people.
How does it actually come to be that there is a reality of "nations that are at ease" and "they helped to worsen [the situation]"? Because it is so with the Jews –
for "In the beginning" –
for the sake of the Torah which is called the beginning, and for the sake of Israel who are called the beginning
(as above):
When the Jews are in a state of "at ease,"
that although they find themselves in exile,
"exiled from their Father's table,"78 –
they are quiet and tranquil,
without any worries,
they are not pained, heaven forbid, that they find themselves in exile –
it results from this that the nations too are "at ease"!
The "I" indeed says in prayer every day
(on weekdays)
"For Your salvation we hope all day",
but five minutes later he goes off to do his own things,
matters of Torah and mitzvos and all good things –
but he is quiet and calm,
without any worries,
it does not bother him at all that he finds himself in exile...
Seemingly, a Jew should have been pained that he is like a son of exile from his father's table –
how is it that it does not bother him?
This comes from what is stated in "And I will place you at the head"79,
in the well-known phrase "a fish stinks from its head" –
they stand in a state of "complacency":
When one approached a Chabadnik and asked him –
where is the source for this that one must every single moment wait, beseech,
hope and demand that Moshiach should already come this very moment?
He wrote to me about this that he is confused because he has nothing to answer to this!
If you –
a Chabadnik,
who comes to the farbrengens where they constantly storm "away with the exile",
and they have already pointed out the sources for this,
how the entire Torah and Judaism demands it,
and have also given explanations about this –
and nevertheless you do not know what to answer another when he asks you about this –
what can one already demand from other Jews?!...
Here we are no longer speaking about the very bewilderment that the Chabadnik does not know what to answer even though he was at so many farbrengens,
rather we speak about the effect of this on the other who asks him the question:
Instead of that which by Divine Providence that one asked him the question,
in order that he should answer him and strengthen him in Judaism and faith in the coming of Moshiach –
not only did he not answer him,
but that one goes away thinking:
Aha –
I am right! Because here is a Chabadnik who goes to "those" farbrengens already more than three times and more than three times three,
where there they say that they speak about these matters –
and nevertheless he has nothing to answer me,
so "from silence –
he admits to me"80...
When a Jew from another circle comes to ask such a question of a Chabadnik –
he must answer him,
it must be "know what to answer". Because that one expects that the Chabadnik should know what the answer is. And if he does not answer him –
that one thinks that he is entirely right!
But what then –
the Chabadnik stands in a state of "complacency":
he comes to the farbrengens,
hears what is spoken,
afterwards reads the "record",
reviews it,
ties it together,
afterwards he puts it away on the shelf –
and there it remains!...
He then learns other things,
the revealed part of Torah,
the secrets of Torah and the secrets of secrets. And among other things he also learns that which was spoken –
because he also considers this an important matter –
but...
it did not touch him...!
So if you stand in a state of "complacency" –
all the more so this causes that other Jews should stand in a state of "complacency" –
because if the Chabadnik does not know what to say about this that a Jew must constantly keep waiting and demanding the coming of Moshiach our righteousness,
after they already storm about this at all farbrengens – well,
what can one already demand from others??...
The question becomes:
What has already been accomplished with 33 years of speaking when one did not effect that one should know this...?
Furthermore:
In the siddur equal for every soul –
the Siddur of the Alter Rebbe81,
the Siddur of Rabbi Yaakov Emden and in many siddurim –
is printed "Tikkun Chatzot",
with which the entire Shulchan Aruch even begins –
And although today only a minority practice it,
and in private
[formerly kabbalists,
and also today in certain circles (Sephardim etc.) they practiced it in public,
but in the diaspora they endeavor that everyone who practices it should do so at home in private82],
and with restrictions,
once a week
(as it states in Kuntres HaTefillah83)
and so forth –
nevertheless it is printed in the siddurim,
anyone can take a look at what is written there –
There are written several piyutim that begin with the words "Until when"
[There is no text of Tikkun Chatzot from the Alter Rebbe; it is not there,
and apparently the reason:
because in the text of the Tikkun from the Alter Rebbe one says many chapters of Tehillim,
in which all the piyutim are already included],
And the meaning of "Ad Mosai" is:
Until when will the exile already drag on...?!
Which in other words means:
"Delay of the exile"!
And when one says "Ad Mosai" it does not mean that he recites the words of Tikkun Chatzot,
and afterwards goes to sleep –
rather, the very meaning of the words emphasizes that he is bothered that the exile is dragging on so long,
consequently, it bothers him not only when he says the words,
but the entire time!
And these are not piyutim that were innovated in the "United States" –
rather they are founded on chapters of Tehillim and sayings of the Zohar!
And likewise, the content of all the chapters of Tehillim that are said in Tikkun Chatzot, their point is –
Until when will one remain in exile...?!
And actually, this is the content of the prayers that every Jew says three times a day –
"For Your salvation we hope all the day"
[and on Shabbos and Yom Tov –
"And may our eyes behold Your return to Tzion with mercy"],
and "all the day" means literally –
the entire day 84
(not only the moment when he says it)!
The question "Ad Mosai" and the constant longing for Moshiach –
does not affect his service in actual deed,
because the order for a Jew is "we will do and we will hear" –
but together with this he waits and anticipates the coming of Moshiach Tzidkeinu.
Nevertheless, when someone comes to ask the Chabadnik from where does he know that one must constantly wait and anticipate Moshiach Tzidkeinu –
he becomes flustered and comes running:
What is there to answer!
Others look at him –
that he is one who comes to farbrengens and hears what is spoken,
so when he has nothing to answer, the result of this is understood:
that other one thinks even more that he is right!
He argues:
Since he is honest 85 he does not want to pretend and say that he hopes and waits and anticipates that Moshiach should come right this very moment –
when he is not there yet!...
So in addition to the fact that how does it come to him that he should not be there yet,
there is also, and mainly –
what impression and effect does it have on another Jew who does not come to the farbrengens, who looks at him as one who comes to the farbrengens and hears what is spoken about "delay of the exile",
that one must pray and demand that Moshiach should come right this very moment? And by Divine Providence that other one looks at him so that he should influence him and strengthen him in his faith in the coming of Moshiach? And in practice it is exactly the opposite:
that other one goes away thinking that he is entirely right because the Chabadnik had nothing to answer!
There must be the "know what to answer" –
one must know how to answer. And especially in this matter –
about which the answer has already been spoken many times.
And the main alarm is –
not only that he did not answer that other one,
but that he does not even know that something is not in order...
The result of "complacency" –
it is quiet and calm,
he does not know at all that something should bother him...
So it is understandable how this "complacency" affects other Jews.
Regarding himself, he indeed is not holding by this entire matter:
When his son or grandson sings "We want Moshiach now" –
he does not understand what this means and why they sing it;
פארשטייט ער ניט וואס דאס מיינט און פארוואס זיי זינגען דאס;
But he says nothing,
because he knows that the child will tell him that he
(the child)
heard about this from me,
consequently he is afraid to get entangled with me...!
That I know he is not a chassid –
Nu! But Heaven forbid that I should mention this at a farbrengen and publicize his name –
then "all the ends have come"!
Consequently, he stands and is silent and says nothing when his children and grandchildren sing "We want Moshiach now";
במילא שטייט ער און שווייגט און זאגט גארניט ווען זיינע קינדער און אייניקלעך זינגען "ווי וואנט משיח נאו";
but regarding himself:
he stands aside and thinks what is going on here,
he does not understand the whole matter...
Everything is fine for him...
What does he lack Moshiach
(G-d forbid)...
(ר"ל)...
One asks him whether he believes in the coming of Moshiach –
he says yes –
"Ani Maamin" is indeed one of the principles. But not today –
Moshiach will come at the appropriate time;
משיח וועט קומען בזמן המתאים;
but the coming of Moshiach at this very moment – no!
And if Moshiach will come, what will he do then? He will then think about what to do.
And then there will be all the great men of Israel –
so what is he then with all his busyness and with his sitting at the head of the eastern wall,
and all the honor –
all this matters when Moshiach comes,
but now –
he argues –
he is fine,
what does he lack?...
He indeed comes to the farbrengens,
and certainly does not miss any of them,
whether for its own sake or not for its own sake,
he comes because he has no choice,
it is not proper,
or on the contrary –
he comes running to a farbrengen in order to hear a word about gentiles and about the seven mitzvos of Bnei Noach,
in order to know what to say to a gentile whom he will meet –
but this does not affect him,
he thinks it is "hilchesa limeshicha"...
He hears what is said
(if he does not sleep),
he later reads the "resimas devarim",
and he even adds to it –
he corrects something in it,
he reviews it –
but further it goes nowhere...
A state of "shaanan".
Consequently, when he meets another who is not a Chabadnik and that one asks him where does it say that one must wait and hope and demand that Moshiach must come at every moment –
at this very moment –
he does not know what to answer. He influences that one so that that one thinks he is entirely correct,
the "shaanan" becomes stronger in him...
And as mentioned,
the main alarm is not that he himself does not know the answer,
but that he leaves the other without an answer,
letting him think that he is correct,
and in addition –
he
(the Chabadnik)
does not know at all that this is something improper!
Regarding another matter:
Someone asked a public activist, a Chabadnik:
How can he be certain that if he sends his son to a yeshiva of Chabad he will become a lamdan?
The activist writes to me that he does not know what to answer that one. –
I do not know how long he waited to ask me this,
and even when he decided to ask,
I do not know why he needs to ask me about it...
I asked him:
How long have you already been in New York? He answers –
over thirty years. Do you know that during this time it was urged to print Torah journals of the yeshiva students? He says –
yes. Do you have the journals? Yes. Do you look into the journals? No. Why? Because he is busy with communal work. But you know that the journals are lying on your shelf –
so take down the journals and show them to the Jew who asked you the question,
and tell him: here you have the Torah topics that the students of the yeshiva wrote, where you want to send your child!
For this is among the reasons why it was urged to print the Torah journals.
One reason is:
Since "achshar d'ri
(b'tami')",
and there has been a decline both among the yeshiva students,
and among the roshei yeshiva –
that they do not instill in the students the "cook" and vitality in Torah study –
therefore one must resort to additional ways to inspire the students.
So one of the advice for this,
when it is demanded that the students present pilpulim,
the student must then prepare more and toil more in that Torah topic,
so that his friends cannot question him etc.
And so that the matter should not remain relevant only to his "class" in yeshiva,
or to his yeshiva alone –
it was proposed that the pilpulim be printed and disseminated.
And from this emerges another benefit –
that one can show others what the students of the yeshiva have accomplished,
and one who sees the journals will think,
surely his son will also be a lamdan if he learns in this yeshiva!
It is specifically from other circles that they grabbed onto this matter of printing Torah journals of the yeshiva students;
איז דוקא פון אנדערע קרייזן האט מען זיך אנגעכאפט אין דעם ענין צו דרוקן קובצי תורה פון תלמידי הישיבה;
and specifically here –
where the matter was initially proposed –
they do not know that one of the purposes of the Torah journals is to demonstrate the erudition of the boys in the yeshiva!
Consequently,
when someone comes and asks you how he can be assured that his son will become a scholar when he sends him to a Chabad yeshiva –
take out one of the journals and show him –
here you have a journal from students of Chabad yeshivas,
and let them take out journals from other yeshivas and compare!...
On the other hand:
What does one do when he does not answer that person –
first of all, he sends his child to another yeshiva! And secondly –
that person becomes even more strengthened in his opinion and thinks that he is entirely correct,
because the Chabad activist had nothing with which to assure him that his son would become a scholar in a Chabad yeshiva!
And the main point is as mentioned –
one does not even feel that this is something improper...
We are not speaking about your own standing and situation. We are speaking about the fact that you must answer the other person,
because he expects that you should know the answer,
and you indeed need to know the answer,
consequently if you do not answer, it is understood that the results are as above.
Regarding this, they claim that here in Chabad there is no "honor of the Torah."
One must also answer this and not leave others without an answer,
which strengthens them in thinking that they are correct. And a simple answer:
Let them look for themselves where there is more "honor of the Torah":
Whether here where one studies Torah not for the sake of provoking etc.;
צי דא וואו מ'לערנט תורה שלא על מנת לקנתר וכו';
or there where one studies Torah not for its own sake, for the sake of provoking and for the sake of boasting in the shame of another and for the sake of causing embarrassment and making strife,
and if it appears to him that another knows better –
he says it is permitted to lie for the sake of peace,
and when one asks him:
What kind of peace,
you are spreading hatred? He answers that they have already done so many times!...
And regarding all these matters about which they ask "questions" –
a Chabadnik must first of all know what to answer and answer in practice –
because it is expected of him,
since he comes to the farbrengens where they speak about these matters,
that he should know what to answer. Consequently he must answer,
in order not to leave the other with the impression that the other is correct,
as above at length.
And may it be His will that these few words should have an effect on the listeners and be sufficient to rectify this matter from now on.
Regarding those who are now sleeping –
since they are sleeping anyway and did not hear what was said,
it will not harm them,
and all the more so from "it is better that they be judged as inadvertent sinners and not as intentional sinners"85,
all the more so those who are dozing, for they are like ones compelled,
even less than inadvertent sinners.
But those who are not sleeping and hear what is being said –
whether because they are pushed,
or because they already want to hear a word about gentiles and the Seven Noahide Commandments,
in order that they should know what to say to a gentile whom they will meet –
may it be His will that they should have an effect.
And especially standing on the 24th of Shvat,
one has special powers that there should not be a situation of "complacent" when Jews find themselves in exile.
And from now on, one should first of all know what to answer and answer in practice to questions that others ask. And especially in the aforementioned matter –
that a Jew needs and must cry out "enough of exile",
"how long until Mashiach comes",
and not specifically in Russian or in English. Rather in the holy tongue –
"Until when".
And not only must he cry out thus in speech with his mouth,
but all the more so must he feel thus internally,
and all the more so bring this down into actual deed –
through his fulfillment of Torah and mitzvos,
until he compels86, so to speak,
(compel from the term coercion87)
that Mashiach should come.
And may it be His will that through this it will be "very close to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it"88:
Not only that we wait for Moshiach,
but he is "close to you",
and "very",
and this is expressed "in the mouth" –
that one cries out with the mouth "Until when?" and that one already wants Moshiach our righteousness,
and all the more so "in your heart",
in thought,
and all the more so "to do it" –
as it were, to compel that Moshiach should come –
it will further hasten the "very close to you the matter",
and "very" –
the "I will hasten" of the true and complete redemption,
"and everlasting joy upon their heads"89,
speedily in our days, literally, and with manifest and revealed goodness.
Discourse (in the manner of a talk)
Beginning with the words "And these are the ordinances etc."
It is also customary to study a verse from the weekly portion together with Rashi's commentary,
and a remark from the Tatte on the Zohar of the weekly portion.
In our portion, chapter 23, verse 26, it states:
"There shall be no one miscarrying or barren in your land; the number of your days I will fulfill." And Rashi comments on "There shall be no one miscarrying":
"If you do My will."
The commentators90 explain that Rashi's innovation is:
In the preceding verse it states "And you shall serve Hashem your G-d, and He will bless your bread and your water, and I will remove sickness from your midst."
However, in this verse it states "There shall be no one miscarrying etc." without a conjunctive vav and not "and there shall not be"
(as it states earlier ("and He will bless your bread and your water, and I will remove etc."),
one could have learned that "There shall be no one miscarrying" does not follow as a continuation of "And you shall serve Hashem your G-d",
it is a new matter not dependent on "And you shall serve Hashem your G-d".
Rashi teaches that even though "There shall be no one miscarrying etc." is stated without a conjunctive vav, this too is dependent on "If you do My will",
on "And you shall serve Hashem your G-d".
But according to this it is not understood
(according to the simple meaning):
(a) Since it states "There shall be no one miscarrying etc."
(without a conjunctive vav) –
what is indeed Rashi's proof that this comes as a continuation and as a result of "And you shall serve Hashem your G-d"
(like the other blessings)?
The commentators explain91,
that the proof is from the fact that we see in actuality that there is sometimes a reality of "one miscarrying or barren in your land". Rashi must explain that this is dependent on the condition "If you do My will",
and since sometimes there is not such a state, therefore "one miscarrying or barren in your land" can exist.
But according to the simple meaning for a five-year-old studying Scripture, one cannot say this:
The five-year-old
(in the time of Rashi and the like)
does not know that "in your land"
(in the Land of Israel)
there is sometimes a miscarrying or barren woman – because he has not yet studied further in Tanach about this,
and now he lives in France and the like –
he does not know what is happening in the Land of Israel. Consequently, one cannot say that Rashi writes "If you do My will" in order to explain how "one miscarrying or barren in your land" comes about. The question returns: from where does Rashi derive that "There shall be no one miscarrying" is specifically "If you do My will"?
(b) According to the explanation of the commentators that "If you do My will" means that also "There shall be no one miscarrying etc." comes as a continuation of "And you shall serve Hashem your G-d" –
why did Rashi deviate from the language of the verse and write "If you do My will",
and not "If you serve Me",
like "And you shall serve Hashem your G-d"?
Also, one must understand in Rashi –
on the other hand:
According to Rashi that "There shall be no one miscarrying etc." is dependent on "If you do My will" –
why is this only "in your land" and not in every place? Everywhere that one fulfills the will of Hashem one should receive the blessing that "There shall be no one miscarrying or barren",
as the five-year-old has already learned several times
(in Parshat Yitro, at the giving of the Torah,
and elsewhere)
that when Jews fulfill the will of Hashem they receive reward
[even though he has not yet studied "If you walk in My statutes etc. and I will give your rains in their time"92]!
Furthermore:
In this very verse it is emphasized that "the number of your days I will fulfill" is not limited to "your land",
as is understood from the fact that it states "There shall be no one miscarrying or barren in your land; the number of your days I will fulfill",
"in your land" in the middle of the verse,
it is understood that "in your land" applies only to "There shall be no one miscarrying etc."
[because if it also applied to "the number of your days I will fulfill" it would have had to be either at the end of the verse:
"There shall be no one miscarrying or barren; the number of your days I will fulfill in your land",
or at the beginning of the verse:
"In your land there shall be no one miscarrying etc."].
It is not understood:
Why is "There shall be no one miscarrying etc." specifically limited to "in your land",
and "the number of your days I will fulfill" is in every place
(not only "in your land")?!
With additional precise points,
and as will be explained further.
In the notes of the Tatte on the Zohar, he comments93 on what is said in the Zohar94 "the food of that wicked one
(Nebuchadnezzar)
was meat in milk
[which is connected to the verse in our parshah95 "You shall not cook a kid in its mother's milk")
and cheese with meat, besides other foods, and this was set before me at my table every day",
And he explains, according to Kabbalah, the difference between the two matters of "meat in milk" and "cheese with meat",
and the precise nuances of the language in this.
However, he does not explain the lesson from this in the service of Hashem,
relying that one will understand it on his own –
and as will be explained below.
Here is the place to complete the explanation of Rashi from last Shabbat on the verse96 "And all the people saw the voices".
It was explained97 that Rashi does not bring the other two things that are stated in the Mechilta98 "There were no lame among them, as it is said99 'and they stood at the foot of the mountain'" and "There were no fools among them, as it is said100 'You have been shown to know'" –
because according to the simple meaning, there is no proof from these verses:
From that which it says "and they stood" there is no proof that there were no lame,
because even the lame can stand. If it had said that they all walked,
that would be a proof that there were no lame,
because a lame person cannot walk
(at least not as well)
as one who is not lame. But from standing alone there is no proof
(according to the simple meaning).
And regarding this it was explained that from "You have been shown to know" there is no proof according to the simple meaning that "there were no fools among them".
They raised this in the "Kovtzim" and asked several questions and offered several explanations,
which in general are plausible,
but they overlooked a "strong difficulty":
It is true that one cannot bring a proof that "there were no lame" if it had said the term standing
(because even the lame can stand),
but here it says "and they stood at the foot of the mountain". This indicates not mere standing but standing firmly.
As Rashi explained earlier on the verse101 "my sheaf arose and also stood upright",
that the addition of "and also stood upright" to "my sheaf arose" is:
"my sheaf arose" means "it stood up",
and "and also stood upright" means "to stand in its place erectly",
i.e., a strong standing,
not mere standing
[Regarding this Rashi explains further on the verse102 "and Datan and Aviram came out standing" –
"with erect stature etc." And although the child of five did not learn this,
nevertheless from this there is a proof that this is the explanation of "stood upright" in the simple meaning),
in addition to that which Rashi explains this in Parshat Vayeishev],
And standing firmly is not possible for the lame as it is for others. Consequently, from that which it says here an unusual term "and they stood at the foot of the mountain"
(not "and they stood"),
standing firmly –
is it not proven that there were no lame here?
The question returns to Rashi:
Why does he not bring that "there were no lame" with the proof from "and they stood at the foot of the mountain"? And as follows.
5. Regarding this there is seemingly a "strong answer" that could have been given why Rashi does not bring
(from the Mechilta)
about the lame and the fools
[and someone wrote about this,
but afterwards it was "lost"...]:
In the three verses that Rashi brings as proofs for "there was not among them one blind",
"there was not among them one mute",
"there was not among them one deaf" –
the term "all the people" is stated:
"and all the people saw"<sup>103</sup>;
"וכל העם רואים" 103;
"and all the people answered"<sup>104</sup>;
"ויענו כל העם" 104;
"and all the people answered etc. we will do etc. we will do and we will hear"105.
However, in the two verses that the Mechilta brings as a proof that "there were no lame among them" and "there were no fools among them" the term "all" is not stated:
"and they stood at the foot of the mountain" is not stated regarding "all the people",
and likewise "You have been shown to know" is not stated regarding "all the people",
consequently there is no proof from this
(according to the simple meaning)
that "all the people" literally stood
(and they stood)
and had "knowledge",
therefore one cannot bring from this a proof that "there were no lame among them" and "there were no fools among them".
However, one cannot say this:
When does "all the people" come to learn something?
Specifically, were it not for the words "all the people," one could think that "all the people" were not equal
(in a certain matter);
(בענין מסויים);
but when one knows regardless that "all the people" were at a certain event –
one can learn nothing from where it does not say "all the people," because one knows that "all the people" were there,
it is as if it were written
(only for some reason the verse does not write it).
At the time of the Ten Commandments, one knows that "all the people,"
all Jews, were present,
as the verse says at the beginning of the matter. Therefore, the verse does not need to repeat each time it speaks about the event of the Ten Commandments that "all the people" were there.
However, when it speaks about a time before the Ten Commandments themselves,
when it could be that "all the people" were not equal
(in a certain matter) –
then when it says "all the people" at that time,
it comes to teach that in a certain matter all Jews were equal.
Based on this, one will understand the difference between the two verses "and they stood at the bottom of the mountain" and "you have been shown to know"
(from which Rashi does not learn that "there were no lame among them" and "fools")
and the other three verses where it says "all the people"
(from which Rashi learns "there was not among them one blind,"
"mute," and "deaf").
"And they stood at the bottom of the mountain" and "you have been shown to know" speak of the event of the Ten Commandments. It is understood by itself that there was "all the people"
(because this was already stated earlier),
and the verse does not need to repeat it. Consequently, one cannot say that since it does not say "all the people" here, there is no proof that "there were no lame among them" and "fools"
(because regardless one knows that all the people were indeed there,
so it is as if it were written in the verse).
Therefore, one must arrive at other explanations for why Rashi cannot bring a proof from this
(like the Mechilta)
that there were no lame and fools.
However, in the other three verses, it does not speak at the time of the Ten Commandments themselves,
but before them.
Consequently, one could think that all the people were not equal,
but from the fact that even there it says "all the people," it is proven
that it comes to teach that "there was not among them one blind,"
mute, or deaf. And according to the order of the verses in Rashi:
Simply
(according to the simple meaning)
the verse "and all the people saw the voices and the torches and the sound of the shofar etc." also refers to what is said before the Ten Commandments106 "and it was on the third day when it was morning, and there were voices and lightning and a heavy cloud on the mountain and a very strong shofar sound, and all the people who were in the camp trembled."
That is, that "all the people etc." also saw the "lightning and heavy cloud on the mountain" which was when the Jews were still "in the camp,"
before they came to Mount Sinai to hear the Ten Commandments. And as it says after this107
(after "when it was morning and there were voices and lightning and a heavy cloud on the mountain")
"and Moses brought out the people toward God from the camp,"
that Moses led the Jews out of the camp to Mount Sinai.
And being in the camp, it is simply understood that not all Jews were in an equal state and condition,
each one was in his place and in his tent
[under his banner,
if there were already banners at that time),
and it could be that others were sleeping and the like.
That is, that simply one could say
(and on the contrary –
this is how it presents itself)
that being in the camp, not "all the people" saw all these matters that occurred on the mountain. It could be that the "heavy cloud on the mountain" was not so strong that "all the people" saw it.
*) For it is forced to say
(according to the simple meaning)
that "and all the people see" does not relate to "lightning and a heavy cloud on the mountain" while they were still "in the camp,"
and to divide that there were two modes of seeing
(one –
(א' –
in the camp and two –
afterwards at the time of the Ten Commandments).
And simply, it was all in one continuum:
"when it was morning and there were voices etc.
(and afterwards)
and Moses brought out etc. and Hashem descended etc. and God spoke etc. and all the people see etc." without any interruption in between.
Consequently, when the verse teaches that "and all the people see etc.,"
one must say that this comes to add and teach something. So Rashi proves from this that it comes to teach –
"it teaches that there was not among them one blind."
Regarding the verse "And all the people answered" — this was before the Giving of the Torah.
On the second of Sivan,
as is understood from Rashi on the verse that "And Moses returned the words of the people to Hashem" was on the third of Sivan. Therefore, when it says in the verse "And all the people answered"
(although without this one could say that perhaps not all the people answered)
this is a proof that "there was no mute among them."
Regarding the verse "We will do and we will hear" — this was before the Giving of the Torah –
on the fifth of Sivan
(as Rashi explains108).
And nevertheless it says that this was "all the people,"
this teaches that "there was no deaf person among them."
Here is the place to mention regarding the gathering that takes place on this Shabbat:
The purpose of this gathering is that Jews gather together in order to strengthen one another in the study of Torah and the observance of the commandments.
And since it is connected with the study of Torah,
there is upon this, first and foremost, the promise of our Sages, of blessed memory, that "Whoever reads and reviews, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him"109,
and "Just as there [at Sinai] with awe, fear, trembling, and quaking, so too here with awe, fear, trembling, and quaking"110.
This gives increased strength in the success of the study of Torah and observance of the commandments of those who have gathered together.
In addition to this:
Since so many have gathered together –
there is also the aspect of "Each one helps his friend"111,
each one helps the other to accept good resolutions,
with the intent to bring them down into actual deed. And "He who has one hundred wants two hundred,
he who has two hundred wants four hundred, etc."112,
not only in quantity but also in quality.
And in addition to this, there is also the blessing of "All who gather here."
And especially since this is in a place where Torah is magnified and a place where prayer is magnified113 –
that the gathering should be successful,
and that they should accept important good resolutions and afterwards bring them down into actual deed –
resolutions both regarding one's own conduct and regarding influencing others,
by being a living example,
including also influencing the children of Noah in connection with their seven commandments.
And in order to connect this with physicality,
and to add additional strength in this –
they will give to the gathering mashkeh from the farbrengen.
Likewise, there are those who travel back after Shabbat to their places to engage in the dissemination of Judaism –
They should do this in a manner of "And these are the ordinances which you shall place before them":
spread Judaism
("these are the ordinances")
in a manner of "you shall place," from the term "placing" and "treasure"114.
That is, that one makes Judaism precious
(like a treasure)
for all Jews,
and "before them" –
"to their innerness"115,
that it should enter into them in an internal way.
And simply:
With every Jew that one comes into contact with, one influences him not only in a superficial manner
(externally),
but internally,
so that there should be a change in him from one extreme to the other.
Here is the place to add, to note, and to illuminate
(both with an ayin and with an alef)
regarding what is said116 that already in the time of exile there should be "And kings shall be your nursemaids and their princesses your wet nurses"117. One asks: Where is this seen today with physical sight?
In the time of the Gemara –
The Gemara in Zevachim118 relates a great story of how a king fixed the garment
(the belt)
of a Jew because "A kingdom of priests and a holy nation is written regarding you
(and you must conduct yourselves with the splendor of the priests119),"
and the Gemara explains that this is the fulfillment of the matter of "And kings shall be your nursemaids and their princesses your wet nurses."
But that was in the time of the Gemara. One asks: Where is this seen today?
There is an incident that happened three days ago where one sees with physical sight the matter of "Kings shall be your nursemaids and their princesses your wet nurses" – and
(not only a private matter of honor and splendor like the incident in tractate Zevachim, but)
in the beginning and essence of Judaism –
the fulfillment of Torah and mitzvos,
that is, that the "kings" help Jews to fulfill Torah and mitzvos,
which as a result brings a Jew honor and splendor.
Three days ago, the president of the state
(who is among those who are in the category of "kings" in this generation)
gave a speech to the entire state,
a "message" about the situation of the state. And at the conclusion and seal of his speech he said –
in the name of the entire state, being the president of the state –
that "it is already time that we
(meaning he together with the entire state)
should help the people who want to give their children a religious education in a religious school
(because only there is it possible for the child to be under the proper influence so that religion will affect him) –
by means of the government of the state reducing the taxes of these people"!
And thereby one sees with physical eyes an expression of "kings shall be your foster fathers" –
that the president
(king)
of the state himself,
in the name of the entire state, said that one must help those who send their children to a religious school,
which includes Jews
[although the president of the state did not explicitly say that he means Jews)
who send their children to a "cheder" and yeshivah where they study Torah and fulfill mitzvos.
And the president of the state said this without reckoning with the "Supreme Court" and "Lower Court" etc.,
and said it in the "message" about the situation of the entire state. And said it openly before the eyes of all the nations –
in a manner that all the people of the state hear it,
and it is written in all the newspapers. And from the people of the state here in English –
it reaches the entire world,
in every place, in its own language!
And thereby one also sees the expression of the fulfillment of the Seven Mitzvos of Bnei Noach:
The foundation of the above-mentioned words of the president of the state is,
of course –
faith and trust in Hashem:
Since he believes in the Supreme One,
therefore he says in the name of the entire state
(without reckoning with the courts,
as above)
that one must help those who send their children to a religious school where they teach about the Supreme One.
And faith and trust in Hashem is the first of the Seven Mitzvos of Bnei Noach
(negation of idolatry) 120.
And as he himself emphasized in the speech,
"that the Supreme One is with us,
but we must be with the Supreme One." Which translated into Lashon HaKodesh means –
"to call all of them in the name of Hashem to serve Him with a united resolve" 121!
And as mentioned,
he said this openly before the eyes of all the nations!
[In his previous speech he only hinted at this and briefly,
as discussed earlier <sup>122</sup> how one sees faith and trust in Hashem engraved on the coins of the state etc.;
ווי גערעדט פריער 122 ווי מ'זעט אמונה ובטחון בה' אויסגעקריצט אויף די געלט פון דער מוינה וכו';
but in this speech he himself explained it explicitly and openly].
And here one sees simply and openly the matter of "kings shall be your foster fathers" and the preparation for the future redemption:
The president of the state says that one must help those who send their children to a religious school. Which is simply that gentiles and kings are "your foster fathers" who help Jews in their service. And this prepares the world for the future redemption,
when it will be –
"that I will transform all the nations to a clear language to call all of them in the name of Hashem to serve Him with a united resolve",
as the president himself emphasized that one must believe and connect together with the Supreme One!
Incidentally, another wondrous matter was seen in connection with the above-mentioned speech:
It is known the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov regarding Divine Providence 123 that it applies to every single detail of creation,
and not only general Providence.
When one learns Moreh Nevuchim 124 simply,
one can learn that he explains that Divine Providence is only over the human species etc.,
but not over every single detail of creation. Chassidus 125 however explains that even according to the system of Moreh Nevuchim there is Divine Providence –
because there are levels in Providence,
as explained in Shomer Emunim 126.
In connection with the speech of the president of the state, one sees something analogous to the matter of "Divine Providence",
that even gentiles recognize this:
In the newspapers –
in the "Times" and the like –
they described the speech –
they also added that during the speech there was clapping
(applause)
42 times! One sees that not only did they describe in the "Times" the general speech,
which is the main matter,
but the writer also paid attention to every single detail, even in an external matter –
like the matter of Divine Providence
(in every single detail, even in a seemingly external matter) –
that they counted how many times they clapped during the speech –
and it was exactly 42 times,
no less and no more!
What the general matter of clapping shows is that the listeners
(who clap)
agree and are satisfied with what the speaker said,
and in our case –
that one must help those who send their children to religious schools,
and in general about faith and trust in Hashem
(as above).
But here the "Times" was even more precise –
to count how many times in particular they clapped –
42 times!
What relevance does this have for a Jew?
Regarding those Jews who do not read any "papers" –
blessings upon them,
they are occupied with higher matters;
זיי ליגן אין העכערע זאכן;
but a Jew who does read the "Times",
he can derive a lesson from the above matter:
Firstly,
regarding the matter of "kings shall be your attendants" and how by the President of the State there is the matter of faith in Hashem
(negation of idolatry).
And in addition to this –
he has the lesson and instruction from the fact that they counted how many times they clapped during the speech –
on the matter of Divine Providence
(as above).
And this is a matter and lesson that a Jew who already reads a "paper" must derive regarding himself.
That a Jew reads in the "paper" about two non-Jews fighting somewhere,
that Pakistan is fighting with India and the like –
has no relevance for him,
because he cannot do anything about it anyway. One asks him:
If so,
why do you read it and you must know every single detail,
how many days they fought, etc.?
He answers:
What do you mean –
he is a person who mingles with people,
he needs to know what is going on!
But when it comes to what is written in the "Times" about what the President of the State spoke and how many times they clapped during it –
which directly concerns a Jew –
that is not so relevant to him...
If Jews did not read the "papers" –
why must one be the "messenger" to convey to them what is written there?
It is because this concerns all Jews:
Others ask the question,
why are there no miracles today?
One tells them:
The meaning of "our signs we have not seen" 127 is not that there are no miracles,
rather miracles exist –
but "we have not seen",
"the one to whom the miracle occurs does not recognize his miracle" 128,
one does not look,
consequently one does not see the miracles!
Even when one grabs him by the hands and turns his head and forces him to look –
he does not want to see...!
Why? Because he lies buried in the "end" instead of lying on the neck... 129
Therefore one tells what is written in the "papers" about the speech of the President of the State –
because if a Jew will only want to see,
he will see in this open miracles,
as above.
Returning to the gathering on this Shabbat –
may it be His will that this be a gathering worthy of its name,
a gathering for the righteous, "benefit for them and benefit for the world" 130,
good for them and good for the world, that they accept good resolutions in all matters of Torah and mitzvos,
and especially resolutions during the time of "ratzon deratzin" of Shabbat,
Until the true good –
that they bring the good resolutions into actual deed. Until the perfection of good –
that this should also reach others,
through influencing others and making each one one who pats in order to cause patting.
As above,
they will now give drink from the farbrengen for the gathering,
and since it is Shabbat, let them distribute a part of it here,
and the rest –
at the gathering.
May it be His will that this further bring closer the time when it will be "entirely drink",
according to the famous teaching of the Alter Rebbe 131.
[His Holiness the Rebbe shlita gave a bottle of drink to R. Y.C. shiyita (for the gathering (meeting))].
It is also customary that on Motza'ei Shabbat of Parshas "Im Kesef Talveh Es Ami"132 the annual Melaveh Malkah be held in connection with gemilus chasadim.
For gemilus chasadim is particularly connected with the future redemption,
as our Sages said:133 "Great is tzedakah, for it brings the redemption near,"
and especially the matter of gemilus chasadim,
because just as the redemption will be for all Jews, so too is gemilus chasadim for all Jews –
"between the poor and the rich."134
May it be His will that the matter of gemilus chasadim now will further hasten the general gemilus chasadim and tzedakah of the One Above –
"Yours, Hashem, is the tzedakah"135 –
the true and complete redemption –
will be only gemilus chasadim for the rich
(for then there will be no poor) –
as our Sages said:136 "Whoever engages in gemilus chasadim, I consider it as if he redeemed Me and My children from among the nations."
And especially since this is a tzedakah also for the One Above Himself
(so to speak),
"redeemed Me,"
because as long as the Jews are in exile, the Shechinah is in exile,137
consequently, when the One Above brings the redemption –
He performs for Himself a tzedakah and gemilus chasadim,
speedily in our days, literally.
As is the custom,
let the gabbai of the gemach deliver a devar Torah adorned with a shtreimel,
and afterwards also take for the Melaveh Malkah a beverage
(connected with "kulo mashkeh")
from the farbrengen.
And this will further connect Jews with the One Above, as our Sages said138 on the verse132 "Im kesef talveh es ami,"
"Do not read 'ami' but 'ami'138 with a chirik."
And as mentioned,
this will further hasten the general gemilus chasadim and tzedakah for the One Above Himself,
"kesef talveh es ami" –
the true and complete redemption,
And there will be the perfection of the people,
"with our youths and with our elders, with our sons and with our daughters,"139
together with the perfection of silver and gold,
love and awe,
for "love is the root of all 248 positive commandments" and "awe is the root of the 365 negative commandments,"141
consequently one has the perfection of Torah and mitzvos,
together with the perfection of the land,
until the manner of "Hashem your G-d will expand your border,"142
And all this with alacrity,
in the manner of "and behold, one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven."143
[His Holiness the Rebbe shlita gave to R. Sh.
G. Sichiy (gabbai of the gemach) a bottle of beverage for the Melaveh Malkah.
And afterwards the aforementioned announced the time and place of the Melaveh Malkah and said the "devar Torah".]
The explanation in Rashi:
According to the simple meaning, "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d" comes as a continuation of what is stated in the preceding verse, "you shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them."
That is, that one should not serve idolatry –
"you shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them,"
rather one should serve Hashem –
"and you shall serve Hashem your G-d."
And therefore Rashi cannot explain that "there shall be no miscarrying nor barren in your land" comes as a reward for "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d"
(like "and I will bless your bread" which is stated in the same verse in continuation with "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d") –
because: (a)
What connection does the blessing "there shall be no miscarrying nor barren in your land" have with idolatry?! (b)
Then it should have stated "and there shall be no miscarrying" with a conjunctive vav
(not "there shall be no miscarrying" as a new matter).
Therefore Rashi indeed does not write that "there shall be no miscarrying" is dependent on "if you serve Me"
(like "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d"),
because it is indeed not as a reward for "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d" which speaks entirely in relation to idolatry
(which has no connection (according to the simple meaning) with "there shall be no miscarrying").
And because of these two reasons why "there shall be no miscarrying" cannot come as a continuation of "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d"
(for what is the connection between them,
and it does not state "and there shall be no miscarrying" with a conjunctive vav) –
therefore Rashi proves that
(according to the simple meaning)
"there shall be no miscarrying" comes as a continuation of what is stated before these two verses, "you shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them" and "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d."
That is, that these two verses
(regarding the negation of idolatry and "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d")
are like a "parenthetical statement" that comes in the midst of the matter that it speaks of beforehand144 regarding the Land of Israel:
"Behold, I send an angel before you, to bring you to the place which I have prepared,
beware of him and obey his voice, for if you obey his voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and an adversary to your adversaries. For My angel shall go before you." And after the parenthetical statement regarding the negation of idolatry and "and you shall serve Hashem your G-d" – the verse returns to speak in continuation of what it had spoken before the "parenthetical statement" –
that "there shall be no miscarrying,
etc."
Therefore Rashi explains that "there shall not be a miscarrier etc." depends on "if you do My will" — in continuation of what is stated earlier.
(Before the "parenthetical statement")
"Beware of him and obey his voice etc. for he will not forgive your transgression, for My name is in him; for if you indeed obey his voice and do all that I speak":
"If you do My will" corresponds to the phrase "and do all that I speak"
[and not "if you serve Me" corresponding to "and you shall serve the L-rd your G-d",
because there is no connection between them as above],
and "My will" is that which "all that I speak" — i.e., that "if you do My will" —
as it says before
(before the "parenthetical statement")
"and obey his voice etc. and do all that I speak" —
then the reward will be "there shall not be a miscarrier etc."
Based on this —
that "there shall not be a miscarrier etc." comes as a continuation and reward for what is stated earlier regarding the land of Israel "for if you indeed obey his voice and do all that I speak" —
one will also understand why the verse says that "there shall not be a miscarrier or barren" will be specifically "in your land" —
and first, another "sharp question":
In the blessing "there shall not be a miscarrier or barren in your land" there is a novelty regarding all the other blessings that the five-year-old has learned until now,
generally a blessing comes to a person for having conducted himself properly,
performed a mitzvah,
one is blessed in his personal matters. Here it says that "if you do My will" —
"there shall not be a miscarrier or barren
(not only with you yourself, but)
in your land",
in your entire land!
Rather, the one depends on the other:
The emphasis here with "in your land" is for the positive —
that since the land of Israel has a special virtue,
as understood from what is stated earlier
(in continuation of which comes the blessing "there shall not be a miscarrier or barren in your land")
that regarding the entry into the land of Israel it will be "Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared etc. and I will be an enemy to your enemies etc. for My angel shall go before you, to the Amorite etc. and I will cut them off",
and afterwards it says "and I will send the hornet etc.",
one sees that the land has a special virtue,
Therefore,
at the time when it will be "for if you indeed obey his voice" of the angel whom,
"Behold, I send before you" to bring the Jews into the land of Israel, "and do all that I speak"
("if you do My will") —
the verse says that one will receive the reward that "there shall not be a miscarrier or barren
(not only with the person himself, but)
in your land",
in the entire special land with the special virtue about which it speaks here —
the land of Israel.
But other lands —
France and the like —
indeed do not have the virtue that the land of Israel has,
therefore it cannot be there that through "if you do My will" there should be "there shall not be a miscarrier or barren in your land".
But the matter of "I will fulfill the number of your days" —
which speaks about "your days",
your days,
not about all the people of the land
[as it also says earlier 145 "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be lengthened"] —
this indeed applies to all lands
(not only "in your land").
Therefore the verse does not write "in your land" regarding this.
Based on this, the above questions are answered,
and one also sees how every word in Rashi is precise,
as discussed many times.
The reason why Rashi does not bring "and they stood at the bottom of the mountain"
(which indicates standing with strength)
as proof that "there were no lame among them" —
Rashi himself notes on the verse:
Rashi explains "and they stood at the bottom of the mountain —
that the mountain was uprooted from its place and was overturned upon them like a tub." Based on this it is understood that here "and they stood" cannot mean a standing with strength,
in an upright posture
("to stand in place uprightly"),
with all one's pride —
because the matter of "was overturned upon them
(the mountain)
like a tub" effects a matter of nullification
(the opposite of an upright posture).
As it says
(later)
146 "You are standing this day before Hashem your G-d" —
this cannot mean in an upright posture,
because one cannot stand "before Hashem your G-d" in an upright posture.
It turns out that not only does "and they stood" here not mean in an upright posture
(rather, simple standing)
but on the contrary:
Here they stood in nullification
(due to the mountain being overturned upon them like a tub).
And the reason why it says here "and they stood"
(not "and they stood") –
because here too there is a standing with strength,
but not the strength and upright posture of the person who stands
(because he cannot stand upright while He held the mountain over them like a cask),
"my power and the might of my hand" 147,
but rather from his self-nullification to Hashem
(which is brought about by "He held the mountain over them like a cask" –
he receives and stands with the strength of the Above,
"He gives you strength to make wealth" 148
And similarly regarding "You are standing this day before Hashem your G-d":
There too, standing upright is not applicable because it is "before Hashem your G-d"
(as above),
but he stands there with the strength of the Above –
from the self-nullification "before Hashem your G-d".
But one need not arrive at this from a later verse
(in Parshat Nitzavim),
because this is also stated earlier in the Song of the Sea,
that all these matters of strength that are spoken of in the Song,
"Then the chiefs of Edom were confounded... terror and dread falls upon them... You bring them and plant them in the mountain of Your inheritance." And if they had merited, this would have been the complete redemption,
and the rest of the details there –
it all comes not from "my power and the might of my hand" of the Jews,
but rather "for He is highly exalted; the horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea" 150,
by the power of the Holy One, blessed be He.
Based on this, it is understood why according to the simple meaning Rashi cannot bring a proof that "there were no lame among them" from "and they stood at the bottom of the mountain":
Because such a "and they stood" which effects the nullification of the person
(by means of "He held the mountain over them like a cask"),
and through the nullification to the Holy One, blessed be He, he receives the strength of the Holy One, blessed be He, this is also applicable to a lame person. And furthermore:
With a lame person, this is easier to effect because he is already broken in himself without this!
The above matter –
that through the person's nullification to the Holy One, blessed be He, he receives the strength of the Holy One, blessed be He – also has a connection to the Parsha,
Parshat Mishpatim:
"Mishpatim" generally refers to the laws in the Torah that are understood by human intellect.
Nevertheless, Rashi says that "And these are the ordinances" is "adding to the first ones,
just as the first ones were from Sinai, so too these are from Sinai".
That is, that even the matters that are understood by human intellect come "from Sinai",
one must fulfill them
(not from human intellect, but rather)
because the Above commanded them at Sinai.
In other words:
Even though intellect is seemingly a concealment of G-dliness,
not only does it not conceal this –
but on the contrary:
"Sinai" descends also into "Mishpatim", intellect,
and likewise –
the "Mishpatim"
(intellect)
is not an independent matter,
but rather it comes from "Sinai".
This also has a connection with the above discussion regarding the day of the Hilula,
that even though initially the passing of the righteous is a matter of darkness and concealment,
"like the burning of the House of our G-d",
but the concealment brings about the drawing down of "He made darkness His hiding place",
a most sublime revelation,
until the passing is "working salvation in the midst of the earth",
and in the revealed and manifest good.
Beginning through that which "Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust" 151,
the matter of the resurrection of the dead,
and the Baal HaHilula and all the righteous among them,
And on the contrary –
the righteous will arise for the resurrection of the dead before all other Jews will arise for the resurrection of the dead,
as it states in the Zohar 152 –
And known is the proof for this –
that immediately when the third Holy Temple will be built
(and this is immediately at the beginning of the redemption 153)
then "Moshe and Aharon will be with us" 154,
consequently there will be no doubts about how to perform the Temple service,
because one will be able to ask them about it. And the question is –
the resurrection of the dead will only be later 155? The answer is that the resurrection of the dead for the general public will be later,
but the righteous will arise immediately, earlier.
And just as this is regarding Moshe literally,
that "Moshe is with us"
(immediately at the beginning of the redemption) –
so too is this regarding the extension of Moshe that is in every generation 156,
until the Nasi of our generation, His Holiness, our Master, the Rebbe,
that he will arise immediately at the beginning of the redemption,
and not only as the extension of Moshe,
but specifically in his matter –
as the Nasi of our generation,
With the coming of Mashiach our Righteous,
that the first redeemer is the final redeemer/15,
that is, that Mashiach
(the final redeemer)
is connected to Moshe Rabbeinu
(the first redeemer),
and together with this he is also from the seed of David and Shlomo
(as the Rambam writes 158).
And similarly regarding the Nasi of our generation, that he is the extension of Moshe
(the first redeemer),
and together with this he is also from the seed of David and Shlomo.
And it becomes the "Make for Me a Sanctuary"159
(as we will soon read) –
the building of the Third Beis HaMikdash,
which is built even at night, as explained in Rashi160,
and further161.
Consequently, one need not wait even one moment for the Geulah –
it can come immediately,
in one hour and in one moment,
even at night,
as was the Geulah from Egypt –
"It is a night of watching for Hashem to bring them out of the land of Egypt"162,
all the more so "on that very day"163 when "all the hosts of Hashem went out of the land of Egypt"163,
and so too in the future Geulah.
And all the more so when the Geulah comes in the manner of "Achishenah"164:
the above-mentioned are calculations when the Geulah comes "b'Itah"164,
but since now "all the ends have passed"165, the Geulah comes in the manner of "Achishenah", then all these calculations are not applicable,
and the Geulah comes immediately and at once,
speedily in our days, literally,
and amidst joy and gladness of heart.
The Rebbe shlita began to sing "Vi Vant Moshiach Now".
The explanation in the gloss on the Zohar will, without a vow, be discussed at the farbrengen on the coming Shabbos,
Rosh Chodesh Adar Rishon,
and Parshas Terumah,
where it says "Make for Me a Sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst",
with several more matters,
as will be explained then.
On Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Yisro –
the conclusion of which Motzaei Shabbos is on this Motzaei Shabbos –
was a conclusion of the year of studying Tanya on the radio.
And it can be said that in this matter of
(studying Tanya on the)
radio, a most elevated matter in spirituality is reflected
[as is known that every physical thing,
even inanimate (including –
a radio) has a root in spirituality. As explained in Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah166 (of the Arizal167) "that even in actual inanimate objects like stones, earth, and water, there is a level of soul and spiritual vitality, namely the level of the investment of the letters of speech from the Ten Utterances that give life and bring into existence the inanimate, etc."
as follows] –
regarding which the discourses of Parshas Mishpatim speak
(consequently it has a connection to this Shabbos).
And from this there is also a lesson in the service of man:
In the discourses of Parshas Mishpatim168
(as was also discussed briefly earlier169)
the words of the Zohar170 are brought, that "Moshe, Moshe"171 there is no pause of the cantillation note between them,
in contrast to "Avraham, Avraham"172 there is a pause of the cantillation note between them,
"because Avraham of Beriyah and of Atzilus are not of the same type,
that of Beriyah is renewal and 'I am dust and ashes'173 etc.
But Moshe of Atzilus and of Beriyah are equal,
for he is the aspect of pnimiyus and he is the aspect of the line and thread of the Ohr Ein Sof that is equal in all worlds, etc."
And as explained in many places174, that regarding Moshe there is no interruption between how he is in Atzilus and in BY"A.
To the extent that even when Moshe is below in this world, when he speaks with Pharaoh, he was in the aspect of Atzilus,
Atzilus down below,
and together with this –
Atzilus as it affects this world,
which is why he affected Pharaoh and even more –
Pharaoh affected him,
as it is written175 "And he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger".
Therefore Moshe had the power
(as explained in these discourses176)
to draw down Daas into all souls of Yisrael,
both into the souls in the aspect of Zera Adam
(souls of Atzilus),
and also into the souls in the aspect of Zera Behemah,
souls of BY"A –
because Moshe is higher than both Atzilus and BY"A
(therefore for him Atzilus and BY"A are equal)177,
therefore he can draw down Daas into the souls of both levels from their root above,
the aspect of Ever HaNahar which is above the order of Hishtalshelus178.
All the above matters
(in spirituality)
are brought down and reflected in their likeness below in physical things,
even in inanimate objects –
which are brought down from them179.
As above from Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah "that even in actual inanimate objects like stones, earth, and water, there is a level of soul and spiritual vitality, namely the level of the investment of the letters of speech from the Ten Utterances that give life and bring into existence the inanimate, etc."
And within this itself there are levels, as to how revealed is the reflection of the spiritual matters above in the physical matters below,
as understood from what is explained in Shaar HaYichud VehaEmunah there, that there are creations whose soul and spiritual vitality stands within them in a revealed manner
(because they can receive their vitality from the Ten Utterances themselves).
And creations that receive their vitality "through substitutions and transformations of the letters, etc." which "are brought down from level to level from the Ten Utterances that are in the Torah",
because "the particular creations cannot receive their vitality from the Ten Utterances themselves that are in the Torah, for the vitality drawn from them themselves is very great relative to the level of the particular creations, etc."
This also applies regarding a radio –
then it becomes channeled and in it is reflected the above matter of Moshe Moshe lo psik tama. Because by him Atzilus and Biyah are already equal.
A radio has within it the property that when one speaks through it a word of Torah
(and the like)
it transmits the speech –
without interruption of time and place –
to all ends of the earth. And since it is so in the physical, it shows that the "soul and spiritual life" of a radio
(so to speak above)
is such that it has the power to effect and influence
(intellect and the like)
upon the listeners of the radio in a manner of without interruption of time and place.
It is known that in general the matter of the influence of intellect from an influencer to a recipient, a teacher to a student –
time elapses until the influence arrives completely from the teacher to the student,
because the teacher must clothe the intellect in garments and parables so that it be according to the measure of the vessel of the student, and regarding a student and scholar who is more elevated, who is closer to the measure of the teacher's intellect –
the influence of the intellect from the teacher need not elapse as much time.
However, regarding a student and scholar who is lower
(who is further from the measure of the teacher's intellect) –
the influence must elapse more time. Until if the intellect of the student is incomparable to the intellect of the teacher, one must come to "three thousand parables"180,
i.e., three thousand levels181 until the intellect arrives at the student,
as explained in many places regarding the wisdom of Shlomo. Unless one transmits the word of wisdom through a hint
[like "the wise man through a hint"182].
Then one can transmit a most profound wisdom more than one can transmit through speech
(as the Mitteler Rebbe explains183).
And then one can transmit to a student incomparable to him without interruption of time,
because one need not take time to clothe the intellect in parables according to the measure of the vessel of the recipient,
since one states the intellect through a hint.
In other words:
The more refined the vessel of the recipient –
the less time elapses for him to receive the influence from the influencer.
And therefore it is stated184 regarding the Future to Come that "a woman will give birth every day,
as it is said185 'she conceives and gives birth together'",
instead of pregnancy lasting nine months it will last nine hours186,
because then the world will become refined,
consequently it will not need to take so much time for the offspring to develop from the influence
(as discussed in a farbrengen previously187).
An example of this now –
is the day of Rosh Hashanah,
in which are included in one glance all the days and details of the year188.
Therefore, through wisdom through a hint one can transmit to a student and scholar who is lower without interruption of time –
because a hint has a very refined "vessel"
(therefore it is only a hint,
not an actual vessel for the intellect).
Based on this, the function of a radio is understood:
Since a radio in the physical transmits speech
(words of intellect)
without interruption of time and place to all ends of the earth –
it shows that from its spiritual root
("soul and spiritual life") –
it is a very refined "vessel"
(similar to the wise man through a hint),
therefore no time elapses for it to transmit the influence of intellect to every place
(and to all types of students)
equally. And together with this, the influence of intellect through the radio is not
(only)
like a hint,
rather through it one can transmit intellectual matters clothed in parables according to the measure of the vessels of the recipients, and it arrives to them without interruption of time
(and place).
Based on this, one will understand how a radio is a reflection
(and has become channeled)
of the matter of Moshe Moshe lo psik tama,
without any interruption between Atzilus and Biyah,
because regarding him both are equal.
At the time of the influence of intellect through the radio, words of Torah,
which come from the Most High from Sinai –
it turns out that in an instant it arrives from above to above
(Torah)
to all ends of the earth,
without any change or interruption of time and place.
This is a reflection in the physical world of Moshe Moshe lo psik tama
(in the spiritual) –
"Moshe in Atzilus and Moshe in Beriah are equal,
for he is the aspect of pnimiyus and he is the aspect of the line and thread of the Ein Sof light that is equal in all worlds, etc." –
that by Moshe there is no interruption and change between Atzilus and Biyah.
And this matter is expressed even more when the words of Torah that are learned on the radio are the book of Tanya –
the pnimiyus of Torah.
The matter of studying Tanya on the radio is indeed a part of the dissemination of the wellsprings outward. And this
(the dissemination of the wellsprings outward)
is the drawing down and influence without interruption of time and place:
As is known, a spring purifies by any amount189,
through the fact that it causes the item that the spring purifies to become null and secondary to the spring waters,
as in the analogy of fish of the sea,
"as waters cover the sea"190.
One of the directives of the aforementioned matter regarding a radio:
The totality of man's service is indeed connected with the limitations of time and place,
for the boundaries of this physical world
(where a Jew performs his service)
are time and place.
But together with this, a person must overcome the limitations of time and place,
so that they should not limit the power of his service,
and he must act above these limitations,
until –
that he must draw down that which is above time and place into time and place.
Therefore, one must have an example, a source, and a reminder of that which is above time and place in this physical world –
in order to give a Jew the strength to overcome them,
and not allow them to limit the power of his service,
even if he thinks that they limit him more than the reality actually is.
An example of this in halachah:
When one makes an eruv of courtyards in an entire city,
one must leave one part of the city without an eruv as a reminder of the sanctity of Shabbos,
"it is a sign so that they know that the eruv permitted them to carry, etc."191 in order that they remember that it is the Shabbos day and that there is a prohibition of carrying in and out from that domain.
Similarly regarding our matter:
A Jew must have in his daily life a sign and example of a matter that is above time and place,
in order to help him in his service
(as above).
This is the matter of the radio –
which transmits matters of intellect and the like without interruption of time and place, analogous to a matter that is above time and place
[An example of this within time itself –
is the day of Rosh Hashanah,
as above in section 424].
And may it be His will that through this matter of the dissemination of the wellsprings outward,
and in the most expansive manner –
through the study of Tanya on the radio –
this should bring "He is coming, the master, King Moshiach"192,
the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach.
And from "And these are the ordinances which you shall set before them",
"before their innermost",
one comes to Parshas Terumah –
"And they shall make Me a Sanctuary and I will dwell in their midst",
the third Beis HaMikdash,
and immediately and at once,
in one moment and in one instant.
The Rebbe, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, shlita, began to sing "He will build the Beis HaMikdash, speedily in our days, and grant us our portion in Your Torah."
Afterwards he said:
All those who need to make a blessing after meals,
will certainly make a blessing after meals.
