English translation 1
It is a farbrengen connected with Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Shevat,
It is a farbrengen connected with Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Shevat,
as indicated by the Rebbe, my father-in-law, that on every Shabbat Mevarchim a farbrengen should be held1.
In addition to what every Shabbat Mevarchim has in common,
that it blesses the month,
each month itself,
and consequently each Shabbat Mevarchim the month,
has its unique aspect. The distinction of Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Shevat is first and foremost —
when speaking about the enactment to farbrengen then —
in that then is the day of the passing of the one who publicized the enactment,
the Rebbe, my father-in-law —
on the tenth of Shevat.
And it is also emphasized, as is known, that the twelve months of the year correspond to the twelve constellations2,
each month has its particular constellation,
and correspond to the twelve tribes,
as the Tzemach Tzedek explains at length, printed in Ohr HaTorah3
(and he says that the intercalated month corresponds to the tribe of Levi)
4. And the month of Shevat
(the eleventh month)
corresponds to Yosef<sup>5</sup>;
איז כנגד יוסף 5;
then "his constellation prevails"6. In this one sees the emphasis in the month of Shevat in connection with the one who passed away in this month,
whose name is Yosef.
But the connection of the month of Shevat with
(the tribe of)
Yosef existed even before the passing:
already at the creation of the world there were twelve diagonal boundaries,
which are double the six directions,
concerning which it is written "Six days did Hashem make the heavens and the earth." And corresponding to the twelve diagonal boundaries are the twelve months and the twelve tribes7. It follows that already then the month of Shevat was connected with Yosef.
All the more so after the passing —
and consequently the yahrtzeit of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, in the month of Shevat —
then there was added
(in a revealed way)
to this connection of the month of Shevat with Yosef.
And on Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Shevat, one blesses Rosh Chodesh Shevat,
which includes within itself all the days of the month
(just as the head includes within itself all the limbs of the body)9,
and particularly the day of the yahrtzeit,
and one blesses it,
as Chassidus explains10 that blessing is from the term drawing down,
with one of the proofs for this from the verse "the one who buries the vine"11.
The above is regarding Shabbat Mevarchim Shevat in every year;
האמור לעיל איז בנוגע שבת מברכים שבט בכל שנה ושנה;
in addition, there are also particular matters in Shabbat Mevarchim Shevat of each year. And among them:
Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Shevat can occur in several Torah portions. And in this year it occurs on Shabbat Parshat Va'eira.
And according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov12 that yesterday
(the 24th of Tevet)
was his yahrtzeit, one must live with the time,
with the weekly portion that is studied at that time,
and in our case —
with Parshat Va'eira.
"Va'eira" means —
I appeared. The content of this is the matter of sight,
that one should see. The lesson from this is:
the service of a Jew must be with utmost perfection,
until the level of sight,
so that with him there should be "Va'eira". And since "I appeared to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Yaakov etc."13 "I appeared to the Patriarchs"
(as Rashi explains) —
the children,
every Jew in all generations,
surely have the powers that there should also be with them "Va'eira" just as there was "I appeared to the Patriarchs".
That is:
Although the Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya14,
and at greater length in Shulchan Aruch,
that the main aspect of the mitzvot is the physical action,
and when one fulfills the mitzvah in action,
even if one had no intentions during it,
one has the main aspect;
האט מען עיקר הענין;
but if one intends all the intentions but the physical action is lacking,
the main aspect is lacking —
all this is regarding the mitzvah;
איז דאס אלץ בנוגע דער מצוה;
but regarding the person himself,
since he is a child of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov,
a child of the Patriarchs —
it is demanded of him that in his service there should be the matter of sight
("Va'eira"),
just as there was "I appeared to the Patriarchs".
That is, in addition to the physical action, there must be with him revelation —
understanding and comprehension in the matter,
until the level of sight,
until the sight of wisdom,
which is the ultimate perfection,
as explained in many places15 that through sight one has the ultimate certainty in the thing seen.
Where is it found in the revealed
(that sight is the ultimate certainty)?
[As discussed many times, every matter in the inner dimension of Torah is found in the revealed,
because they are one thing. As understood from the very name that they are called the revealed of Torah and the inner dimension of Torah,
the hidden of Torah —
it is understood that it is one thing,
and this is the inner dimension and hidden of the revealed matter].
It stands in the revealed that hearing is not like seeing. And this also pertains to halacha,
that therefore "a witness cannot become a judge",
because "since they saw him, they cannot find merit for him":
When the judge hears
(hearing)
about this from witnesses,
and a true hearing,
because it is a hearing according to the Torah –
hearing from kosher witnesses,
and there was "and you shall investigate and inquire and ask thoroughly etc." and so on –
nevertheless, from the aspect of hearing, it still leaves room for the judge to find merit in him,
and that there should be "and the congregation shall judge etc. and the congregation shall save etc.";
און עס זאל זיין "ושפטו העדה גו' והצילו העדה גו'" 19;
but not so when he sees it with his own eyes,
even if that one has merit,
"they cannot find merit for him" because the verification that comes from seeing is so strong that it does not allow him to find any merit in that one.
Here it is speaking of one who has merit that can be found in him so that there should be "and they shall save",
because if not,
what is the novel point that through seeing one cannot find any merit in him:
Even if he only hears about it, he will not find any merit in him
(because he has no merit);
(וויבאלד אז ער האט ניט קיין זכות);
Rather, certainly it is speaking here that that one has merit,
and in this lies the practical difference between seeing and hearing:
If the judge only hears about it,
he can find that merit in him,
but not so if he sees the deed,
"they cannot find merit for him",
due to the ultimate verification that comes through seeing.
So too in our case –
the lesson of "Va'eira":
In the service of a Jew, there must be not only action in practice,
but also the inner service within this,
understanding and comprehension,
and not only in a manner of hearing,
but –
seeing.
For since regarding the Most High there was "Va'eira",
the Most High revealed Himself,
this is certainly so that also by a Jew there should be seeing –
in accordance with the saying of our sages "just as He came to see, so He came to be seen".
And it is demanded of a Jew,
and he has the power for this from the fact that it was so with his forefathers,
that "I appeared to the forefathers". As Rashi explains
(as above):
Even though the verse states "I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob",
Rashi explains "I appeared to the forefathers". And the explanation of this:
The three forefathers,
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
have in themselves two matters: (a)
The unique matter of each one individually.
As per the saying of our sages that the forefathers are the chariot,
each one of them has his line of service as a chariot to God. Each one of them is a separate leg in the chariot –
Abraham is one leg,
Isaac a second leg and Jacob a third leg
[and Rachel or David is the fourth leg,
as explained in various places]; (b)
The common point among them –
that they are all three
(the same thing -)
forefathers.
When one says only the names of the forefathers themselves,
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
the unique matter of each one of them is emphasized. When one says the expression Abraham our father,
Isaac our father,
Jacob our father –
one emphasizes the common point among them –
that they are forefathers.
And their meaning and content as "forefathers"
(common point among them)
is –
איז –
as its name:
"Forefathers" means that they have children,
i.e., that in them there is "he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord to do righteousness and justice".
Based on this, the emphasis of Rashi in writing "I appeared to the forefathers" is understood:
In the matter of "Va'eira", the common point of the forefathers is emphasized –
how they are fathers to children. And just as there was "I appeared to the forefathers",
it gives power that it should be so also with the children –
every Jew in every generation.
And as explained in Torah Or that in the aspect of the forefathers
(unlike the aspect of the tribes)
there is "in every time, in every person, for behold, we call none 'forefathers' except the three,
and the matter is that the aspect of the forefathers is an inheritance for their children after them in every generation... for they
(the forefathers)
are the root and source of all souls of Israel". And as explained in Tanya that the forefathers bequeath to the children of Israel a concealed love etc.
It follows that the matters that were with the forefathers,
including "I appeared to the forefathers",
also give power that it should be so with the children –
every Jew.
And as per the saying "the deeds of the forefathers are a sign for the children",
the deed of the forefathers is a sign and giving of power that it should be so also with their children.
As is known, there are two manners of simanim (signs)
(as explained in the sources regarding halachah): *25: (a)
A sign that clarifies. For example –
Regarding a found object:
When one gives a sign that the found object is his item, the meaning is not that through this sign the item acquires a connection to him,
but only that the sign clarifies that this is his item. (b)
A sign that effects that the item should be thus. As brought regarding the practical difference in halachah.
Maaseh Avot siman l’banim (the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children) is a sign according to the second manner –
It effects and gives power that the deeds of the fathers should be in the children. And on the contrary:
The deeds were in the fathers in order that they should be a sign for the children, and in the children the deeds should be.
And just as by the fathers it was “And I appeared to the fathers”,
this is a sign for the children,
it effects and gives power that it should be so also by the children –
every Jew in every generation,
including a child of five for Mikra (Scripture)
(with which Rashi learns “And I appeared to the fathers”)
and a simple person, etc.
Those who ask questions ask:
How can one liken oneself to the fathers?
Furthermore:
Rashi explains that “And I appeared to Abraham etc. with the name El Shaddai” refers
(also)
to what Moshe had previously said, “Why have You done evil to this people”,
“The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him, ‘Woe for those who are lost and are not found,
I have cause to lament over the death of the fathers. Many times I appeared to them with the name El Shaddai, and they did not ask Me what My name is,
and you said, ‘What is His name? What shall I say to them?’”,
and the fathers “did not question My attributes, and you said, ‘Why have You done evil’”. Now, how can one say that every Jew in this time can effect the deeds of the fathers
(because Maaseh Avot siman l’banim) –
when Moshe Rabbeinu could not attain to this?!
It turns out that one is grappling with Moshe Rabbeinu and with the great ones of Israel –
when one says that every simple person can attain to Maaseh Avot!
To this, the Tana d’vei Eliyahu answers:
“Every single Jew is obligated to say, ‘When will my deeds reach the deeds of my fathers, Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov’”.
And this is not only a matter related to speech,
that “every single one is obligated to say” thus,
but regarding actual deed –
as emphasized in this statement, “When will my deeds reach”.
And if one wants to have a rationale for this and has a question on it, etc. –
this is a question on the Tana d’vei Eliyahu and on Eliyahu. And since soon the redemption will come –
then Eliyahu will be the herald of the redemption,
one will be able to ask him about this!
Continuing from the above –
there is a strong question in the words of Rashi, “Woe for those who are lost etc.”,
to which one does not pay attention:
In the speech of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Moshe, “And I appeared to Abraham etc.” –
the Almighty says to Moshe Rabbeinu that he should tell the Jews, “And I will take you out from under the burdens of Egypt, and I will rescue you etc., and I will redeem you etc., and I will take you”
[the four expressions corresponding to the four cups],
and “And I will bring you etc.”
[corresponding to the fifth cup],
and it is speaking of how Moshe is the one who will take the Jews out of Egypt
(by the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He).
That is, a greatness the greatest in Moshe,
that he is the one who takes the Jews out of Egypt!
Now, how does it accord with what Rashi writes regarding this very matter,
that the Almighty says to Moshe, “Woe for those who are lost and are not found etc.
(the fathers)
did not question My attributes” unlike Moshe Rabbeinu;
לא הרהרו אחר מדותי" משא"כ משה רבינו;
it is a contradiction from within:
Just now we speak of the greatest quality of Moshe Rabbeinu, that he is the one who takes the Jews out of Egypt
(by the mission of the Holy One, blessed be He) –
and here Rashi says that the Almighty tells Moshe his deficiency, “Woe for those who are lost and are not found etc.”?!
Furthermore:
Regarding this very matter, the verse continues –
“And I appeared to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and to Yaakov with the name El Shaddai, and My name Hashem I did not make known to them”,
“I was not known to them in My true attribute etc.”,
unlike to Moshe, the Almighty says, “Therefore say to the children of Israel, ‘I am Hashem’”,
as explained in Chassidus, that by the fathers the name Hashem was not revealed, unlike to Moshe in Egypt,
and especially at the giving of the Torah,
it was revealed. From this emerges the superiority of Moshe over the fathers –
this is seemingly a contradiction to what Rashi emphasizes regarding the superiority of the fathers over Moshe,
“Woe for those who are lost etc.”,
and the fathers “did not question My attributes” unlike Moshe?!
That is, it is a twofold contradiction:
Both regarding Moses and regarding the Patriarchs. Regarding Moses –
it is speaking here of his superiority, that specifically to him the name Havayah was revealed, unlike to the Patriarchs,
and together with this Rashi says that the Almighty tells him "It is a pity on those who are lost, etc.,"
a deficiency relative to the Patriarchs. And regarding the Patriarchs –
the verse emphasizes that "My name Havayah I did not make known to them"
(only the name El Shaddai)
and Rashi emphasizes their virtue that "they did not question My ways"
(unlike Moses),
as the commentators ask the questions.
And Rashi apparently does not warn a sharp student about the answer to the question.
The explanation of this –
in the "wine of Torah" that is in Rashi's commentary –
That in general, a commentary in Rashi for a sharp student does not need to be so explicit.
All the more so if this is the "wine of Torah":
Rashi's commentary "And I appeared to the Patriarchs" contains within itself another commentary
[according to the "wine of Torah",
the inner aspect of the matters,
or if one wishes, this is according to the way of allusion,
and if one wishes, this is even according to the way of the plain meaning and openly in Rashi's commentary] –
this emphasizes a matter that the Patriarchs do not have,
and specifically the children now have it:
When one tells someone that in his ancestors there was a situation of such and such,
this emphasizes that in his ancestors in their time there indeed was such a situation,
but now they are only ancestors,
they are not present,
only the children are present,
consequently, to perform the present service, it is not sufficient what he had such ancestors and what they did their service in their time,
rather now the children must perform the service in a manner appropriate to this time.
He can claim that his ancestors had the greatest virtues,
and he has lineage, etc. –
but with this he cannot fulfill the service that is required now,
in order to perform the service in actuality,
he must
(the child)
perform the service that is required now. He has for this the power indeed from his ancestors,
but he must do it in actuality.
So too regarding the emphasis "And I appeared to the Patriarchs":
When the Almighty tells Moses that "And I appeared" was "to the Patriarchs," it is emphasized in this,
that to the Patriarchs in their time there indeed was "And I appeared",
but now they are only ancestors,
that is, that in this generation they are not present,
and Moses
און משה
(from the children of the Patriarchs)
is indeed present in this physical world,
and now it is required that one must take out the Jews from Egypt,
consequently, for this it is not sufficient what the Patriarchs did in their time,
rather Moses our teacher,
who finds himself now in this physical world,
he must exert himself,
and he has the powers,
to take out the Jews from Egypt.
If the Patriarchs were in this generation –
perhaps their service would be to take out the Jews from Egypt,
but since they are not present,
and Moses is indeed present –
he must do this in actuality.
It is not sufficient that he had elevated parents,
such a father and such a mother and such a grandfather and grandmother –
because now one must take out the Jews from Egypt,
"Tafaru da palchu",
for this it is not sufficient what was in the time of the Patriarchs,
and "The Torah is not in heaven" –
one must take out Jews from Egypt in this physical world,
consequently you must involve yourself in this and do all that depends on you to take them out of Egypt!
Jews are suffering in Egypt –
you cannot rely on the Patriarchs
(who are now not present),
rather you must take them out from there!
Specifically Moses,
who found himself in this physical world
(a soul in a body)
together with the Jews in the exile of Egypt,
and he experienced the suffering of the Jews,
as it is said "In all their affliction, He was afflicted",
it is specifically he
(unlike the Patriarchs who were not then present)
must exert himself to take out the Jews from Egypt.
And to such an extent did Moses experience with them,
that the exile and suffering of the Jews in Egypt affected him personally,
and he had to flee out of fear not only of gentiles but of Jews in Egypt.
And it is understood the greatness of the suffering that this caused Moses:
He had to flee from his birthplace,
from his father and mother,
brother and sister,
and family and tribe,
and run to Midian,
and there –
to Jethro. Which is the ultimate opposite of Moses our teacher:
There is a Midrash that states "A fool believes everything" — this is Moses,
because with him the concept of faith in its completeness shone,
therefore he is "a fool believes everything." And to such an extent —
that it does not bother him that in the Torah it should be written about him this way. And on the contrary:
This is after all the Torah of Moses,
"Remember the Torah of Moses My servant,"
and nevertheless it did not bother him that in the Midrash —
which is a part of the Torah of Moses
(which he received from Sinai) —
it should state that "a fool believes everything" — this is Moses.
However, regarding Jethro it states that he had to do with every idolatry in the world,
and not only had to do,
but he was a priest in this —
the ultimate opposite of the faith of Moses! It is therefore understandable the great experience of Moses needing to flee from his birthplace to Midian to Jethro! And in addition, Moses was in exile in Midian for forty years
(as known the opinions on this in Seder HaDorot),
and it is explained in many places the power of forty years
("forty years of understanding" etc.).
From this one sees how much Moses our teacher,
being in that generation,
shared in the suffering of the Jews in the exile of Egypt. And therefore specifically he
(and not the Patriarchs who were then not present)
must endeavor to take the Jews out of Egypt.
And this is the emphasis of "And I appeared to the Patriarchs":
that the Patriarchs are now not here,
and now it is incumbent upon the children —
including Moses —
that they should do the service that is required now,
in our matter —
that one should actually take the Jews out of Egypt,
which Moses must do
(and he cannot rely in this upon the Patriarchs).
On the other hand —
"And I appeared to the Patriarchs" also contains the interpretation
(as above section 63)
that what the children do
(in their generation),
also the innovation in service that is required in their time
(in our case —
the matter of the Exodus from Egypt),
this itself is in the power of the Patriarchs, from the aspect that every Jew has within him the three Patriarchs,
and the deeds of the Patriarchs are a sign for the children,
because "a son is the leg of his father,"
and "a father merits a son who is handsome, etc., wise,"
and likewise a daughter,
and from the powers that the son inherits from his father he has the ability to perform his service in his time.
But on the second side:
In the generation of the son
(when the Patriarchs are not present)
the son must do the service that is required in this time
(and cannot rely in this on his lineage).
True, he has for this the powers of the Patriarchs,
but he
(the son)
must bring them from potential to actual.
It follows that in "And I appeared to the Patriarchs" two matters are emphasized: (a)
The service of the children comes from the power of the Patriarchs. (b)
And on the other hand —
now the Patriarchs are not present,
therefore one must appeal to the children that they should do the service that is required now,
in this matter —
to take Jews out of Egypt.
Based on this, one will understand the answer to the aforementioned difficult question:
According to the above, the content of "And I appeared to Abraham, etc., with the name El Shaddai, and My name Havayah I did not make known to them" is understood,
however to Moses the name Havayah was revealed,
"My true attribute":
It is not the interpretation that in the time of the Patriarchs there was one revelation,
and afterwards in the time of Moses a new revelation was innovated —
of the name Havayah,
Rather, what was revealed to Moses
(and what is revealed throughout all the generations)
is all one continuum from the Patriarchs,
because it is all in their power. Only in the time of the Patriarchs the revelation of the name Havayah was only in potential,
and now
(in Egypt,
and especially at the Giving of the Torah)
through the children it is revealed in actuality.
That is:
"And I appeared to the Patriarchs etc." speaks generally —
that by the Patriarchs there was
(in potential)
a revelation of Divinity,
a revelation of all matters in Divinity. Afterwards it continues in particularity and in actuality —
that in actuality, in the time of the Patriarchs there was only the revelation of El Shaddai,
and in the time of Moses there was revealed in actuality
(which was also in potential by the Patriarchs)
the revelation of the name Havayah.
Yes
יא
On the other hand:
Even though the revelations and services through the children in the time of Moses
(and in all times)
are in the power of the Patriarchs,
nevertheless the son must bring them from potential to actual,
and upon him lies the responsibility and mission to do the service that is required in his time
According to this, it is understood how the two things correspond with each other,
that we speak. In this portion regarding the greatness of Moses
(that he took out the Jews from Egypt and with him there was the revelation of the name Havayah,
unlike with the Patriarchs),
and together with this Rashi says that the Almighty tells him "It is a pity on those who are lost and are not found, I must lament over the death of the Patriarchs etc."
And regarding this concerning the Patriarchs,
Rashi emphasizes their greatness –
"It is a pity on those who are lost etc.",
and "they did not question My attributes",
and together with this the verse says that "My name Havayah I did not make known to them":
On one hand
(in general and in potential)
the greatness of the Patriarchs is emphasized –
"And I appeared to the Patriarchs" –
that with them were in potential all the flows and revelations of Divinity,
and that all revelations and flows
(also the revelation of "I am Havayah")
through the service of their children is all a continuation of the service of the Patriarchs,
because it is all in their potential. Therefore Rashi emphasizes here their greatness –
"It is a pity on those who are lost etc.",
"they did not question My attributes",
unlike with the children –
Moses –
משה –
it can be that there is a lack in this matter.
On the other hand –
when we speak in detail and in actuality –
the greatness of the children is emphasized:
"And I appeared to the Patriarchs" emphasizes that the Patriarchs are gone,
but there are children who inherit all the powers of the Patriarchs,
and now one must reach them and the responsibility lies upon them, consequently they certainly have the powers for this –
to carry out the service that is required in this generation
(taking out the Jews from Egypt),
by bringing from potential to actuality that which is with them as an inheritance from the Patriarchs.
And moreover:
they add upon this the revelation of the name Havayah,
a true knowledge of Divinity,
higher than the revelation that was in the time of the Patriarchs.
It turns out that with the children there is an additional greatness
(in their time)
relative to the Patriarchs,
because for the service in this generation the service of the Patriarchs in their time is not sufficient,
rather for this one must reach the children,
specifically in this matter –
taking out the Jews from Egypt through Moses,
and specifically then the revelation of the name Havayah occurs which was not with the Patriarchs.
And even though the Patriarchs are now gone,
this is seemingly a deficiency,
as the Almighty says to Moses "It is a pity on those who are lost and are not found, I must lament over the death of the Patriarchs etc.",
and "they did not question My attributes" –
it is rather:
the very thing that is said to the children that the Patriarchs are gone and therefore there can be a lack
(seemingly why is this said to them),
is in order to bring out in them the powers
(from potential to actuality)
so that they should be like their Patriarchs:
Through the fact that the children hear that "It is a pity on those who are lost and are not found etc." and that the Patriarchs "did not question My attributes" –
they seek within themselves the "they did not question My attributes",
and the rectification for the loss
("It is a pity on those who are lost etc."),
and through this there is opened within them the "they did not question etc." and service in perfection just as with the Patriarchs,
until nothing is lacking
(consequently there is no "It is a pity on those who are lost etc."),
because "just as his offspring are alive, so too he is alive". And moreover:
through the fact that initially there was "It is a pity on those who are lost etc.",
it brings out the advantage of light from darkness
(an elevation relative to the Patriarchs).
And according to this the difficulty of the commentators is resolved
(mentioned above)
in the contradiction at the beginning of our portion that together with the greatness of Moses Rashi emphasizes the greatness of the Patriarchs relative to him,
and together with the greatness of the Patriarchs the greatness of Moses relative to them is emphasized,
and more.
The lesson in service from all the above:
In every Jew in his service there must be the matter of "And I appeared" –
in a manner of seeing.
Even when he performs the practical commandments,
he can nevertheless do this only with his power of action,
and it should not permeate his other powers –
but then one does not see the accomplishment of a person. As explained in Chassidus that for the matter of action the animal soul within a person is sufficient,
because also an animal performs the matter of action,
when it walks it kicks pebbles
(pebbles)
and through this matters are added
(laws)
in the Torah;
אין תורה *48;
a person also has intellect –
consequently one demands from him that also when he performs the practical commandments this should be permeated also with his intellect and understanding and comprehension
(and his other powers),
until it is in a manner of seeing,
not only hearing
(which also hearing –
"we will hear" –
is from the term understanding and comprehension).
And every Jew has for this the powers of the Patriarchs,
which in them was "And I appeared." As discussed above that every Jew has within himself the Patriarchs,
and "Each and every one of Israel is obligated to say: When will my deeds reach the deeds of my Patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob"
(as above from Tanna Devei Eliyahu).
Additionally, there is another precision in "And I appeared to the Patriarchs":
When one calls Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by the name "Patriarchs" –
as we also say it in prayer "our Patriarchs,"
and not grandfathers or great-grandfathers,
it also means –
that we have a connection to them not through intermediaries
(all the generations in between),
but they themselves are our Patriarchs,
like one's own fathers.
As is understood simply by a child of five years of age studying Scripture:
When one tells him that they are called "Patriarchs" he understands that this is like his father,
his father.
That is, that he has three fathers –
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
and in addition also his father literally, as his name is in the Holy Tongue.
And the same applies regarding the four Matriarchs.
This further emphasizes that every matter that was in the Patriarchs exists in every single Jew –
because they have a direct connection
(without intermediaries)
with every Jew; they themselves are the Patriarchs of every Jew,
just like his own father from whom he inherits all matters.
Consequently, the question falls away,
how can one compare oneself to the Patriarchs,
and how is it possible to accomplish more than Moses and the great ones of Israel,
and actually, the question is with a child:
how can he compare himself to himself when he will grow up and be an adult and obligated in commandments –
because Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are the Patriarchs of every individual Jew,
consequently, every Jew equally has a direct connection
(without intermediaries)
with the Patriarchs,
and can accomplish what his personal Patriarchs accomplished!
And the same applies regarding the study of Torah:
Although regarding Torah the Rambam writes in his introduction to his book Yad HaChazakah the order of the transmission of the Torah from generation to generation from Moses until Rav Ashi, forty generations –
the meaning of this is not that when a Jew in later generations studies Torah it is as if he studies the Torah of Rav Ashi,
but rather he studies the Torah of Moses which he received at Sinai,
and when he studies it is as if he stands at Mount Sinai –
as our Sages said: "Just as there [it was] with awe and fear, trembling and quaking, so too here [it must be] with awe and fear, trembling and quaking,"
because whoever reads and reviews Torah, the Holy One, blessed be He, reads and reviews opposite him,
and as much as he
(the person studying)
invests himself and demands in his study of Torah,
so much is given to him –
"opposite him." When he demands everything
(as it was at the time of the Giving of the Torah) –
everything is given to him "opposite him."
The same applies in our matter regarding "our Patriarchs" which we say in prayer –
that this is without intermediaries,
but rather one receives directly from the Patriarchs themselves. And when one begins the Amidah prayer with "Blessed are You, Hashem, our God and God of our Patriarchs,"
this helps so that all the requests that one asks afterwards are certainly fulfilled.
Parenthetical remark:
There are those who ask "questions" –
they ask questions on matters that are connected with the text of the prayer:
They bring a proof from the prayer "The shoot of David Your servant, may it sprout forth speedily,"
"For Your salvation we hope all day" –
Jews have been praying thus for more than nine hundred years and it has not yet been fulfilled,
and on the contrary –
there has been the exact opposite of this?!
Firstly –
this is a claim against the simple faith of a Jew, Heaven forbid!
And secondly –
this is similar to a question that the Shelah already asked,
but he does not remain with a question,
like them,
but rather he gives an answer to it:
He asks:
"This matter that our Sages said, 'The Holy One, blessed be He, does not despise the prayer of the many,' is seemingly difficult to understand, for our eyes see that it is not so, for the prayer of eighteen [blessings] all of Israel prays it three times every day, and many times redemption is mentioned in the prayer,
'See, please, our affliction, etc., the shoot of David, etc.,'
and this is more than one thousand six hundred and fifty-four years that we have been in exile, and our prayer is unanswered?" And the answer is explained there.
And the explanation of the matter is:
That the prayers are fulfilled and they effect in spirituality,
and not in a spirituality that has no connection to the person praying,
but rather this effects below regarding his soul. And this is not a secondary matter,
but rather his very essence,
because Jews make their soul primary and their body secondary. And if he has a proper intensity –
it effects also in the physicality of the world literally.
The Shelah HaKadosh
[who was a halachic decisor,
a kabbalist, etc.]
had the fortune that he lived before those who ask such questions in order to provoke.
Do
טו
But now they ask such questions!
Not only do the questions have no place,
but they even do it in a "silken spoon" –
that this is even connected to "the honor of the Torah"...
This is like "the parable of one who seizes the head of a king, etc." –
I do not wish to mention the continuation of the parable,
especially since it is already printed in the Tanya...
One takes Torah and the honor of the Torah,
and uses them in order to provoke,
and the opposite of "a potion of life"!
And not only does he himself do it,
but he also educates students in this way. And it is understood the magnitude of the decline to which this brings himself, and all the more so the students!
All the more so the students –
because when one educates students in this way, this is even worse than if the conduct is only regarding oneself:
Regarding oneself –
it is indeed "the outcast shall not be cast out,"
surely a spirit from on high will be aroused upon him and he will strike himself "we have sinned, etc."
(not on Shabbat)
for his previous conduct;
אויף זיין הנהגה קודמת;
but regarding the students whom he educated in this way –
his repentance does not help,
because what does his repentance help regarding students who go around and use Torah in order to provoke?!
Even though one has no claim against him regarding himself
(because he has repented),
but one has a claim against him –
why did he teach the students to follow the method of using Torah in order to provoke!...
Consequently,
as long as he does not effect upon the students that they should retract from this method –
the matter is not rectified.
Regarding our subject –
"And I appeared to the Patriarchs" –
every Jew has the potential that his service should be in a manner of seeing,
and that he should attain the level of the Patriarchs,
that "they did not ponder My attributes," etc.
For every Jew is a child of the Patriarchs,
and he must say "when will my deeds reach the deeds of my Patriarchs,"
even a five-year-old for Scripture,
even a simple person. Who is even less than a five-year-old:
a five-year-old has at least already learned letters and vowels,
and from the time he began to speak his father teaches him Torah,
as is ruled in the laws of Talmud Torah;
ווי אפגע'פסק'נט אין הל' תלמוד תורה 58;
but a simple person –
he knows nothing at all,
he is like an infant who has emerged into the world.
And therefore every Jew can attain that his service should be in a manner of seeing –
as it was "And I appeared to the Patriarchs."
And on the contrary –
now there is an advantage in the "And I appeared" which every Jew can reach relative to the "And I appeared to the Patriarchs" in their time:
Then,
before the giving of the Torah,
the revelation of G-dliness
("And I appeared")
was with an order,
and earlier
(in the time of the Patriarchs)
the "And I appeared" was only with El Shaddai,
afterward in Egypt and especially at the giving of the Torah there was the revelation of Havayah;
דערנאך במצרים ובפרט בא מ"ת איז געווען דער גילוי פון הוי';
but now,
after the giving of the Torah,
after the nullification of the decree "the upper ones shall not descend below and the lower ones shall not ascend above" –
it is "I said you are angels" in the lower ones:
at the moment a Jew merely decides –
he receives everything that exists in the upper ones as he is situated in the lower ones –
both El Shaddai,
and Havayah,
"I am Havayah."
And it becomes –
in a manner of "I will hasten it" –
"And I will take out, etc., and I will rescue, etc., and I will redeem, etc., and I will take, etc., and I will bring you to the land, etc.,"
a good and spacious land,
speedily in our days literally,
and not "in our days" in the plural,
but without any delay –
in one day,
in an instant,
and with joy and a good heart.
Another special matter on the Shabbat of blessing, Shabbat of the fixed month of this year –
that the eve of Shabbat was the 24th of Tevet,
the day of the yahrzeit of the old Rebbe.
And according to the words of our Sages, of blessed memory, that "one who toiled on the eve of Shabbat will eat on Shabbat" –
it is understood that the "will eat" of this Shabbat of blessing of Shevat is from the toil of the 24th of Tevet. It is therefore understood that the "will eat" is in a most elevated manner,
and as follows.
May He
יז
And even though then "whoever toiled on the eve of Shabbat" in the broad sense means –
all the six days of the week before Shabbat,
including the first day of the week,
but in the precise and particular sense it means primarily the actual eve of Shabbat,
the sixth day. And on the contrary:
the preparations for Shabbat during all the days of the week themselves come from the power of the actual eve of Shabbat
[similar to how the prayers of all the week come from the power of the prayer of Shabbat].
Therefore the law is that one who runs in the public domain on the actual eve of Shabbat
(the sixth day)
is "with permission"
(and therefore he is exempt for any damage he causes because of his running),
because specifically then is the primary preparation for Shabbat.
One might argue that also on the first day of the week he ran in the public domain as a preparation for Shabbat,
and he conducts himself like Shammai
[not like Hillel –
that "Blessed is the Lord day by day" *64],
but then one must know whether he does it because he conducts himself like a Tanna and runs as a preparation for Shabbat,
or he does it to make a few cents,
a few kopecks,
a few dollars,
or a few million!
Also during the days of the week before this one might argue,
and especially in our times,
that he is preparing for Shabbat by means of preparing Shabbat foods and then putting them into a cold place to keep them fresh,
all the more so if "that which befell you on the way" –
he freezes it,
and when the eve of Shabbat comes he takes it out for Shabbat.
One must then know, however, from where the cold comes. And especially according to the known fact that regarding the showbread there was the quality of "hot on the day it was taken",
one sees that it is a virtue that each day one should have a fresh food item from that day
(not frozen from before).
However, when he runs in the public domain on the actual eve of Shabbat
(the sixth day)
and is then preparing foods –
the Shulchan Aruch rules that all of Israel is presumed to be of kosher status,
and this he runs on the eve of Shabbat as a preparation for Shabbat,
because on the sixth day is the primary time of preparation for Shabbat.
And in this year it is the eve of Shabbat Mevarchim of the month of Shevat –
the 24th of Tevet,
the day of the hillula of the old Rebbe. Consequently it turns out that the "he will eat" on this Shabbat is from the "he toiled" and the service on the 24th of Tevet.
One will understand the elevation in this according to the explanation of the elevation of the 24th of Tevet:
On the 24th of Tevet there is a wondrous matter to which one does not pay attention –
connected with the daily portion of Tehillim of that day, as is known the enactment –
which goes back to the old Rebbe –
regarding the recitation of the daily portion of Tehillim as divided according to the days of the month]:
In the daily portion of Tehillim of the 24th
(in the month,
including the 24th) of Tevet,
the day of the hillula of the old Rebbe,
one recites Hallel
(and not half Hallel,
but complete Hallel)
(only in Hallel as one recites it on festivals and Rosh Chodesh the Men of the Great Assembly added a blessing before it and after it).
In this one immediately sees the connection of this daily portion of Tehillim with the day of the hillula
(of the 24th of Tevet):
"Hallel" and "hillula" are from the same root. Only "Hallel" is in the holy tongue,
and "hillula" is in the Aramaic language,
but it is known that also the Aramaic language has a virtue
(not only because Jacob was in Aram for twenty years, but)
because it is close to the holy tongue).
As even a simple person understands:
he sees simply that "hillula" contains within it the letters of "Hallel",
he understands that they have a connection between them. He further asks about this,
and one tells him,
that they indeed have a connection,
and one explains to him the connection:
"hillula" means wedding
(as explained regarding Lag BaOmer),
which is a matter of joy,
similar to the matter of Hallel which is connected with joy.
The elevation of Hallel is simply:
Among the matters in reciting Hallel is to express praise and thanksgiving to the Most High for the miracles that He performed. And to such an extent that the Gemara says "one who recites Hallel every day, this is etc." the opposite of praise and thanksgiving,
because if one recites it every day this diminishes the praise and thanksgiving for miracles. From this it is understood,
since that one recites Hallel on
(the daily portion of Tehillim of)
the day of the hillula of the 24th of Tevet
(the content of the matter of hillula is also Hallel) –
this emphasizes that the 24th of Tevet is connected with a matter of a miracle for which one recites praise and thanksgiving
(not as on every day,
when "one who recites Hallel" is the opposite of this).
And even then there is no recitation of Hallel, as it is said in the daily portion of Tehillim, one does not make a blessing before it and after it.
(Which the Men of the Great Assembly instituted) – it can be said: (a)
Before reciting Tehillim one does say the "Yehi Ratzon",
at least the abbreviated one,
at least one has this intention
(if one does not say it).
This is the blessing before Hallel. (b)
In that one does not make a blessing for Hallel when one recites it in the daily portion of Tehillim
(the 24th of Tevet)
there is still an advantage over Hallel with a blessing –
like the explanation in Torah Or, the reason why one does not make a blessing
(according to our custom)
on the tefillin of the head
(when there is no interruption between the tefillin of the arm and the tefillin of the head),
and likewise on the laying of tefillin according to Rabbeinu Tam –
because the drawing down through it is from a place that is higher than the place where the speech of a person
(in his blessing)
can reach.
Like the evening prayer –
it is optional.
Furthermore:
It can be said that the advantage of reciting Hallel within the daily portion of Tehillim
(the 24th of Tevet)
is even greater than reciting Hallel in general
(not within Tehillim):
Regarding Tehillim which King David,
David, King Messiah –
"the sweet singer of Israel"
(for all Jews throughout all the generations) –
said,
he
(David)
requested "May the words of my mouth be for favor." It is stated upon this in the Midrash "They shall be made for generations and the words of my mouth shall be written for generations and engraved for generations... (v)
They shall read in them and receive reward for them like [the study of the laws of] negaim and ohalot."
And although this was a request and prayer of David,
it can be said like the explanation regarding "And you shall love the L-rd your G-d" that this is both in the sense of a command and in the sense of a promise –
that "May the words of my mouth be for favor" and "They shall read in them and receive reward for them like [the study of the laws of] negaim and ohalot",
was both a request and prayer and a promise that it would be so in actuality.
From this is understood the greatness of the advantage of reading the "words of my mouth" in the Book of Tehillim,
including Hallel
(in the daily portion of Tehillim of the 24th of Tevet),
because David
(requests and)
promises that the reading of the "words of my mouth"
(and the reward for this)
is like the study of "negaim and ohalot".
That is, study of the highest and deepest subjects in Torah, and Torah as it is connected with the world,
and the world after the sin of the Tree of Knowledge
(which specifically now are the subjects of negaim and ohalot relevant).
For at first glance –
if David had wanted that the reading of the "words of my mouth" should be considered
(only)
like study of the deepest subjects in Torah
(but not specifically Torah as it is connected with emphasis with the world after the sin of the Tree of Knowledge),
he would have had to say that it should be
(not "like negaim and ohalot", but)
"like nezikin",
because "one who wishes to become wise
(true wisdom,
the wisdom of Torah)
should occupy himself with monetary laws",
rather he wanted that it should be considered like the study of the part of Torah that is connected with worldly matters with emphasis as it is after the sin of the Tree of Knowledge,
which is most emphasized in "negaim and ohalot"
(matters of impurity).
And in "ohalot" even more than in "negaim":
Specifically regarding the impurity of a corpse
(ohalot)
"the face of Moses became wrinkled",
and Solomon said about this "I said I would be wise, but it is far from me",
but regarding the impurity of negaim he did not say this.
One sees from this the greatness of the advantage of reciting Tehillim,
that through this one accomplishes as with the study of Torah in the subjects of negaim and ohalot:
Just as through the study of the Torah of negaim and ohalot,
it is in a manner of understanding and comprehension that one understands intellectually the subjects of negaim and ohalot
(also ohalot,
the impurity of a corpse).
And through the study of Torah in this one rectifies the matters in the world
(which came about as a result of the sin of the Tree of Knowledge) –
so too one accomplishes this through the recitation of Tehillim.
From this is understood also the advantage of reciting Hallel within Tehillim
(in the daily portion of the 24th of Tevet)
over the general recitation of Hallel.
And it can be said further:
Through the recitation of Tehillim one accomplishes more than through the study of Torah
(negaim and ohalot),
and in addition, the recitation of Tehillim is also relevant to all Jews
(but not so the study of Torah,
and especially in the subjects of negaim and ohalot) –
It is known that the stories of the Baal Shem Tov
(some of them told by the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
and already printed and published,
consequently this is a lesson for the public)
regarding that which the Baal Shem Tov marveled before his students at the greatness of the elevation of reciting Tehillim by simple people,
to the extent that this accomplishes more than the Torah of the students.
That is, their recitation of Tehillim accomplishes not only more than ordinary Torah,
but more than the Torah of the students of the Baal Shem Tov,
which implies the greatness of their Torah –
Torah for its own sake,
and in the manner of "bless Him in the Torah first,"
the perfection of knowledge in the Giver of the Torah,
and nevertheless the recitation of Tehillim of the simple people accomplished more for this very level in Torah!
It is customary at a farbrengen connected with the twenty-fourth of Tevet to speak about a topic in the books of the Baal HaHillula –
in whose books and Torah the Baal HaHillula himself is revealed,
as is known what the Rebbe
(the Maharash)
of blessed memory said before his passing: "I am going to heaven,
the writings I leave for you,"
for in the "writings" he gave himself over
(as discussed many times).
And this is the same content of the language of our Sages regarding the Holy One, blessed be He, and Torah in general –
"I wrote and gave over My very self."
The books of the Baal HaHillula, after which he is called by everyone, are –
the Book of Tanya and the Shulchan Aruch. And after this he is called "the Baal HaTanya and HaShulchan Aruch"
[and we have already spoken about the connection of the beginning and end of these two books].
And one should connect the beginning and head of these two books –
according to an acronym at the beginning of the Book of Tanya
[for the matter of acronyms is also according to the revealed Torah, as we see in many places in the Talmud,
that one gives a sign (at the beginning or end of the topic) with an acronym of the subjects discussed in this topic or of the authors of the statement (not necessarily a sign from the beginning or end of the word,
but sometimes also from the middle of the word)].
And although in general it is not proper to state hints and acronyms, etc.,
but one may do so when from it one can derive an arousal or a lesson in divine service. And as follows.
Regarding the order of study,
whether one begins to learn first the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe,
or first the Book of Tanya –
one can say both ways:
Simply, one begins to learn first the Shulchan Aruch,
because first of all a child needs knowledge of the practical law, how he should conduct himself. Beginning in the morning –
washing of the hands,
the morning blessings,
study of Torah, and so forth.
Afterwards one teaches him Tanya,
the inner dimension of these matters,
and how "the matter is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it."
Or one can say the opposite:
The first thing that a child does upon awakening in the morning,
even before washing the hands, etc.,
he says "I give thanks before You, living and enduring King, for You have returned my soul within me with great mercy, Your faithfulness." And this is the content of the Book of Tanya:
There it is explained the matter of "Your faithfulness" and "great is Your faithfulness,"
and how the Almighty is "living and enduring" –
coming into being every single moment continuously,
and the matter of "King
(living and enduring)" –
the totality of the matter of divine service.
Therefore, first and foremost one must teach the child Tanya,
and afterwards Shulchan Aruch.
The beginning of the Shulchan Aruch is –
from the later edition
(which is printed in the Shulchan Aruch before the first edition).
As is known, the law follows the later authority. And this is even when the later authority is a different person,
all the more so when this is a later edition by the same one who wrote the first edition,
it is certain that the main thing is the later edition.
The later edition in the Shulchan Aruch begins:
"Yehuda ben Tema says: Be bold as a leopard, etc., to do the will of your Father in heaven. Bold as a leopard means not to be ashamed before people who mock, etc."
Incidentally:
Here it says "Yehuda
(ben Tema)
with an aleph
(at the end).
But in the Tur,
and in the Mishnah in Avot
(the source for this law),
also as the Alter Rebbe brings the Mishnah in Avot in his Siddur,
it says "Yehudah" with a heh.
And it requires examination in the first printings of the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe whether there too it is not written with a heh.
And especially according to the words of the Gemara that "Yehudah" contains within it
(the letters of)
the Name Havayah
(with the addition of a dalet),
unlike "Yehosef" which has only the letters yud, heh, vav.
Consequently it is necessary that "Yehudah" be with a heh.
Consequently:
One does not say that one must change the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe –
One must, however, clarify how it stands in the first editions of the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe,
and clarify who wrote it,
whether it is a reliable authority. –
The beginning of the book Tanya is with the word "Tanya"
(and because of this the book is called by this name).
Before this comes the introduction of the compiler and the title page –
But the beginning of the body of the book Likkutei Amarim is from "Tanya"
(and because of this the Alter Rebbe is called by the world "the Baal HaTanya").
And one can say that in the initials of "Tanya"
(the beginning of the book Tanya)
is hinted the matter that is discussed at the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch
("Yehudah ben Tema says: Be bold as a leopard etc. to do the will of your Father in Heaven"):
The Tav
(of "Tanya")
is the initials of "Tema",
the Nun –
"leopard",
the Yud –
"Yehudah" and the Alef –
"your Father in Heaven":
It must be "Cheima"
(the Tav of "Tanya") –
One must constantly say
(as discussed many times the explanation of "Tema"),
and what must one say:
"leopard"
(the Nun) –
"Be bold as a leopard",
and "leopard" is the first thing enumerated in the Shulchan Aruch –
it includes the other things
("light as an eagle etc."),
and who says it –
"Yehudah"
(the Yud),
the matter of "I have set the Lord
(for "Yehudah" contains within it the name Havayah)
before me always",
and the One who is – "
(to do the will)
of your Father in Heaven"
(the Alef).
And the beginning and head of the Shulchan Aruch and the book Tanya –
with the word "Tanya",
the initials of "Tema",
"leopard",
"Yehudah",
"your Father in Heaven" –
includes everything that is stated afterwards in these books
(Shulchan Aruch and Tanya),
because initials and the beginning and head of the book are analogous to a head which includes all the limbs of the body,
as explained regarding Rosh Hashanah that it includes all the days of the year analogous to a head.
There is also a principle that their beginning is interwoven in their end –
Consequently,
there must be a connection and relationship from the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe
("Yehudah ben Tema says: Be bold as a leopard etc. not to be ashamed before people who mock etc.")
with its end
(the end of the laws of muzzling).
And to preface:
"The entire Torah –
including also the Shulchan Aruch –
was given in order to make peace in the world"
(as the Rambam writes at the end of the laws of Chanukah from the Sifra).
That is, that there should be peace not only in the supernal retinue,
but also in the lower retinue,
that is, peace in this lower world,
including also peace in relation to the mockers and opposing and undesirable matters in the world.
Therefore the entire Shulchan Aruch begins with the general principle of making peace regarding the mockers in the world –
"Yehudah ben Tema says: Be bold as a leopard etc. not to be ashamed before people who mock":
Simply, "mockers" refers to gentiles –
a Jew makes peace in the world with the gentiles,
the opposite of kingdoms provoking one another,
beginning through "not to be ashamed before people who mock",
he is not affected by the mockers,
rather he stands with strength and boldness of "bold as a leopard",
consequently when the mockers see that he is not affected by them,
and on the contrary –
through them
(the mockers)
there has come to him strength and boldness in his service of the Lord,
they cease to mock,
and on the contrary –
they become transformed and become helpers and assistants to Jews in their service
(as emphasized at the conclusion of the Shulchan Aruch,
as will be explained).
So too at the conclusion of the Shulchan Aruch
(of the Alter Rebbe)
the matter of the Torah was given to make peace in the world is emphasized. And an even higher level in this than at the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch:
The conclusion of the Shulchan Aruch is with the laws of borrowing, hiring, and muzzling. And there, in its very end, several details are discussed
(in the laws of muzzling)
regarding the relationship according to Halacha of Jews to gentiles in which the matter of peace in the world with gentiles is emphasized:
Jews have been commanded regarding the prohibition of muzzling –
"You shall not muzzle an ox while it threshes"
(including with the work of a gentile and with a cow of a gentile),
and likewise a person working with produce of the land may eat from that which he works in the field
[and in this itself there is a distinction whether the muzzling is intentional or unintentional (as it states in the last paragraph –
the conclusion of the Shulchan Aruch)].
However, "the gentile is not warned regarding muzzling" 104. And the law is that "a worker
(an Israelite)
who works for a gentile...
is forbidden to eat without the knowledge of the gentile from what he is doing in the manner that he eats from that of an Israelite, as it is said: 'your fellow' and not 'of a gentile'".
One sees from this the emphasis on conduct in pleasant ways and in ways of peace with the nations of the world.
(The Torah was given to make peace in the world),
and not, Heaven forbid, to deceive them or take away what belongs to them.
And regarding this, earlier in the section, the Alter Rebbe writes –
since muzzling is a prohibition for a Jew,
it is "forbidden to say to a non-Jew, 'Muzzle my ox and thresh with it your threshing' or another work of a non-Jew,
even though the Jew does not benefit from this,
since a prohibition is committed in that the Jew gives him something of his own, which is his ox." And the Alter Rebbe adds –
"And just as on Shabbat it is forbidden to say to a non-Jew, 'Take this meat and cook it today for yourself,'
and saying to a non-Jew is forbidden regarding all the prohibitions of the Torah, just as on Shabbat and Yom Tov."
Further, the Alter Rebbe says
(in this section):
"But it is permitted to say to him
(to a non-Jew)
'Muzzle your ox and thresh with it your threshing,'
because the non-Jew is not commanded regarding muzzling."
What also in this one sees the emphasis on the Torah was given to make peace in the world and the conduct of a Jew with the nations of the world in a way of peace –
that one may not say to a non-Jew that he should do a thing that is forbidden for a Jew. And on the other hand –
a thing that is permitted for a non-Jew
(even though it is forbidden for a Jew) –
the non-Jew may do it. To the extent that a Jew "who works for a non-Jew, it is forbidden to eat without the knowledge of the non-Jew from what he makes, etc."
Furthermore:
In the halacha at the conclusion of the Shulchan Aruch
(that one may not say to a non-Jew "muzzle my ox,"
because it is a prohibition for Jews,
but "it is permitted to say to him 'muzzle your ox and thresh with it your threshing,'
because the non-Jew is not commanded regarding muzzling")
is also emphasized the effort that must be among Jews to influence the nations of the world that they should fulfill the commandments that they were commanded –
as per the ruling of the Rambam,
which is brought later,
"Moses our Teacher commanded from the mouth of the Almighty to compel all the inhabitants of the world to accept the commandments that were commanded to the children of Noah" –
For just as "it is permitted to say to him 'muzzle your ox, etc., because the non-Jew is not commanded regarding muzzling" –
it is understood that if it were possible that a non-Jew would be commanded regarding muzzling,
one would have to endeavor that he should not do it,
just as one may now not allow him to do it with an ox of a Jew.
From this it follows that at the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch is emphasized the work of the action of the Torah to make peace in the world with the nations of the world and mockers –
the matter of "he should not be ashamed before people who mock,"
to the extent that through this one makes them into non-mockers. And at the conclusion of the Shulchan Aruch is emphasized the
(conclusion and)
completeness of the action of the Torah to make peace in the world with the nations of the world and the mockers –
that one endeavors to influence them that they should fulfill their commandments,
to the extent that one transforms them completely for good.
From this one also has a directive for a Jew as to how his relationship should be with the nations of the world:
A Jew must endeavor to influence non-Jews that they should accept upon themselves their seven commandments. In the language of the Rambam –
"to compel all the inhabitants of the world to accept the commandments that were commanded to the children of Noah,"
and as discussed many times that the meaning of "to compel" is,
of course,
in pleasant ways and in ways of peace.
And not like others who think that when one has to deal in matters of business and the like with a non-Jew –
one may deceive him,
swindle and distort,
and lie to him! Say false testimony to him!...
Let one look in the Shulchan Aruch –
one will see that one may not do it!
As it is also emphasized at the end of the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe,
that "a worker
(a Jew)
who works for a non-Jew...
it is forbidden to eat without the knowledge of the non-Jew from what he makes, in the manner that he eats from that of a Jew."
Only the conduct must be –
in accordance with the aforementioned directive of the Shulchan Aruch of the Alter Rebbe and the explicit ruling of the Rambam –
to conduct oneself with non-Jews in pleasant ways and in ways of peace,
and to influence them that they should fulfill their commandments.
And through that which one brings peace in its completeness in the world –
"you shall not muzzle an ox in its threshing" becomes regarding the entirety of the Jewish people –
as discussed previously
(at the conclusion of the Shulchan Aruch)
the matter in this according to the way of hint and homily:
The matter that an ox goes to work in the field refers to that which the Most High sends Jews into this lowly world in order to make a dwelling place for Him, blessed be He, in the lower realms –
to make a field from the desert of the world. And in order that Jews should have powers to carry out the difficult work,
He gives them powers –
"and abundant produce is in the strength of an ox."
The Jews claim to the Most High:
The Torah rules that "You shall not muzzle an ox while it threshes" –
While still in the field,
In this world where one works to make a dwelling place for Him in the lower realms,
One wants to have "food" and receive from that which one works...
The law of "You shall not muzzle an ox while it threshes" is,
That before one makes from the produce of the field flour and bread,
Even before one brings the produce into the house,
When the produce is still in the field –
The ox may eat from it
(Because it worked in it).
The Jews claim to the Most High:
"You shall not muzzle an ox while it threshes"...
We do not want only the hidden reward in the World to Come,
That when we will arrive at "His house" it will be "to dwell in tranquility" –
Rather, while still in this world where one does the service,
One wants to eat there and have reward and pleasure!
Until one effects that it should be so,
That while still in the field
(This world)
In the time of exile,
One has "light in their dwellings".
Until one brings about that from the field
(This world)
One should go,
Together with the king,
To the city,
And there itself –
In the palace of the kingdom,
And there in chamber within chamber –
"I and the king alone",
And the entirety of the people,
"With our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters",
"A great congregation shall return here",
One goes together with the entirety of the Torah,
In the entirety of the Land,
Because one has made from all parts of the land and the desert –
"The city of the great King",
And with joy and a good heart.
There must also be a connection between the 24th of Tevet and the Torah portion of this day
(In this year) –
From the sixth to the seventh of Parshat Vaera,
As is known the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that from every thing one must derive a lesson,
And especially from a matter in Torah,
Consequently, one must derive a lesson from this Torah portion of the 24th of Tevet in connection with the 24th of Tevet. And the Alter Rebbe adds further – that
(Not only must one derive a lesson from it, but)
One must live with it.
The Torah portion of the 24th of Tevet
(In this year)
Begins:
"And I will set a redemption between My people and your people". And the end of the portion is:
"But for this reason I have stood you
(Pharaoh)
To show you My power and so that My name may be declared throughout all the earth".
And it can be explained the connection of this to the 24th of Tevet –
The day of the passing of the Alter Rebbe:
The essence and service of the Alter Rebbe
(Which on his day of passing all this ascends on high etc.)
Is –
איז –
As his name "Shneur":
Two lights,
The light of the revealed part of the Torah and the light of the inner dimension of the Torah.
That is, that the essence of the Alter Rebbe was the dissemination of the Torah,
And especially the dissemination of the wellsprings outward.
It is known what His Holiness my father-in-law, the Rebbe, said in the name of his father the Rebbe
(The Rebbe Rashab) of blessed memory
(And this talk is already printed in Torat Shalom),
That the main matter of the dissemination of the wellsprings outward began after Petersburg. And the meaning of "after Petersburg" is,
Of course,
Not the imprisonment in Petersburg,
But the redemption from there.
And behold,
The general matter of redemption from exile derives from and is connected with the redemption from the Egyptian exile –
As our Sages said "All the kingdoms
(Exiles)
Are called by the name of Egypt because they distress Israel",
And consequently all redemptions from the exiles are called by that name and derive from the redemption from Egypt. And especially according to what is explained in the Maharal that the redemption from Egypt brought about that the matter of exile and servitude for Jews could no longer exist
(As will be explained later).
From this it is understood that in the manner of all redemptions,
Including the redemption of the Alter Rebbe
(When the main matter of the dissemination of the wellsprings outward began),
They are in the manner of the redemption from Egypt. And from the manner of the redemption from Egypt one can learn the manner of all redemptions.
In order to know the manner of the redemption from Egypt from which one can learn regarding the manner of the redemption of the Alter Rebbe,
One must look in the Torah –
Where it tells about the redemption from Egypt.
It is written in the Torah –
At the beginning of the Torah portion of the 24th of Tevet –
That first and foremost the Most High told Moses that he should announce to Pharaoh the tidings of the redemption:
"And I will set a redemption between My people and your people". And at the end of the Torah portion that the exile
(And redemption)
Of Egypt is "so that My name may be declared throughout all the earth". And from this it is understood that so it is also regarding the redemption of the Alter Rebbe.
And even though after the redemption from Egypt was already actualized –
the tidings "and I will set a ransom" seemingly do not pertain to actuality
(it is a matter of the past) –
in addition to this that all the exiles and redemptions are called by the name of Egypt,
consequently one can learn from the manner of the exile and redemption of Egypt regarding all exiles and redemptions,
there is more:
It has been stated many times that every matter that is written in the Torah is eternal. And even a matter related in the Torah that was later nullified
(and the Torah tells how it was nullified) –
is also eternal until the end of all generations
(because it is written in the Torah).
As is known the proof for this from the vow of Moses to Jethro "and Moses consented":
Even though the vow was nullified
(as it is written in the Torah),
one who makes a vow following this vow, it is a valid vow,
because it is written in the Torah.
Through this it is understood regarding "and I will set a ransom."
And based on this introduction, the connection of the redemption of the Alter Rebbe
(when the main aspect of the old Rebbe began –
the dissemination of the wellsprings outward)
with the lesson of Chumash of the twenty-fourth of Tevet
(the day of his passing when all his work ascends etc.) is understood:
The redemption of the Alter Rebbe
(like all redemptions)
derives from the redemption from Egypt. And the emphasis in this is seen in this lesson of Chumash:
The matter of redemption is the content of "ransoms"
("and I will set a ransom")
which is stated at the beginning of the lesson of Chumash of the twenty-fourth of Tevet.
And just as in the redemption from Egypt it was in the manner of "and I will set ransoms etc.,"
so too in the redemption of the Alter Rebbe
(which derives from the redemption from Egypt) –
as is known that the redemption of the Alter Rebbe was connected –
with and in the manner of "He redeemed etc."
[As the Alter Rebbe writes (in his well-known letter) that "when I read in the book of Psalms the verse 'He redeemed my soul in peace,'
before I began the verse after it,
I went out in peace."]
Afterwards the verse continues in the manner of "the redemption" –
that this is "in peace" and "among many" etc.,
but the point in this is –
that the redemption is in the manner of "He redeemed" – "
(and I will set)
ransoms."
So too the continuation of the verse regarding the redemption from Egypt –
"and I will set a ransom between My people and your people" its parallel was also in the redemption of the Alter Rebbe:
The Alter Rebbe was imprisoned among the nations
(of that country).
And at the time of the redemption it became apparent that "and I will set a ransom
("He redeemed")
between My people and your people."
In the manner of the exodus from Egypt,
and as it is also written "to take for Himself a nation from the midst of a nation."
The redemption of the old Rebbe
(the nineteenth of Kislev)
in the manner of "He redeemed my soul in peace etc." is also connected with the matter of charity –
as the Alter Rebbe connects both matters in several of his letters
(some of which were printed in Igeret HaKodesh,
and particularly in other letters not printed in Igeret HaKodesh).
Therefore this is the place –
standing at the conclusion of the month of Tevet,
whose beginning is with the days of Chanukah and before that is the nineteenth of Kislev –
to mention regarding the charity campaign of the nineteenth of Kislev and Chanukah. It was not mentioned about this earlier,
because about this we have already spoken many times,
more than three times,
one does not need to repeat it every year.
And since the vast majority,
more or less of them,
have already given for the campaign –
we now mention,
standing at the conclusion of the month of Tevet,
that those who have not yet participated in this campaign,
can still do so.
And to note that the entirety of the month of Tevet has a special connection with charity:
Our sages of blessed memory say that "Tevet is a month in which the body derives benefit from the body." And this is the general content of charity:
The Alter Rebbe explains in Tanya regarding the commandment of charity that "since with these coins
(that he gives to charity)
he could purchase the life of his vital soul, behold he gives the life of his soul to God." It follows that on the part of the giver of charity, he gives over through the charity from the life of his soul
(the vital)
and the life of his body. And he gives it over to sustain the soul and body of the poor person and the members of his household,
"the sustaining of the soul of the poor person,"
and it is understood that this means sustaining the soul and body of the poor person,
because charity primarily means in a physical sense literally
(not only for the soul and spirit,
but),
that the body of the poor person literally should derive benefit from it. It follows that the matter of charity is "the body derives benefit from the body" –
the body of the poor person derives benefit from the body of the giver who gives over from the life of his soul
(the vital)
and his body.
From this there is also a lesson regarding the entirety of the charity campaign:
The concept of charity must be primarily –
in physicality,
giving those who need the money and the like from which they have physical benefit.
One might think:
Since "the Torah is more precious than pearls",
instead of giving the poor person gold,
he will teach him a deep concept in Torah. But the poor person does not understand that "the Torah is more precious than pearls" and thinks that money is more precious –
this is proof that that one has no knowledge,
and if he has no knowledge –
it is forbidden to have mercy on him!
But what will be regarding the physical needs that the poor person must have? He argues:
For this he relies upon the Most High,
that the Most High will sustain the poor person and his household. And on the contrary he argues:
Why must the sustenance of the poor person pass through him
(a flesh and blood) –
when it could come to that one directly from the Most High without intermediaries!
One tells him that this is all correct and fine and good –
but the Shulchan Aruch rules that one fulfills the commandment of charity specifically through that which one gives in actuality
(the one who needs it)
money literally!
It is true indeed that one must give the charity with a pleasant countenance,
and "one who gives a coin to a poor person is blessed with six blessings, and one who appeases him with words with eleven blessings" –
but primarily the main thing is –
the giving in actuality,
to sustain the soul of the poor person physically and in actuality.
And the approach of the giver must be –
not as if he has much money and gold,
and he is doing the poor person a favor by giving him some of it,
but as explained in many places:
the money belongs to the Most High,
only the Most High gave it to him as a deposit,
and the Most High also gave him free choice –
in order to grant him merit with the commandment of charity through his choosing to give the money to the poor person. The choice lies in his hands –
he can choose to give it or not, heaven forbid,
and together with this the Most High requests of him –
"and you shall choose life"!
And at the time that he chooses to give the money to charity –
this is his merit,
and he receives for it –
"four measures shall be yours".
And as also explained in the discourse beginning "The voice is the voice of Yaakov" of the old Rebbe
(which in the first printings of Tanya was printed at the end of the book)
regarding the concept of "he gives a coin to a poor person and then prays",
how through the giving of charity to the poor person it is opened for him himself that the "prayer" should be as is proper.
Regarding this is also the directive concerning all the campaigns and the dissemination of Judaism and the wellsprings outward:
One demands of each one that he should do the mission of His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe to go out of his four cubits and disseminate Judaism among Jews who are found in the outside. And through that which one does the mission of His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe, a person's agent is like himself –
one becomes connected with the sender,
His Holiness, our Master, Teacher, and Rebbe.
One could argue:
In order to become connected with the Rebbe with complete certainty and in the strongest manner –
this is through studying his Torah,
for then one has the absolute promise that between him and the Rebbe there is a "wondrous unity, the likes of which there is no unity, nor anything comparable to it, found at all in physicality, to be truly one and unified from every side and angle",
a unity between intellect, intellecter, and intellectum,
he becomes one thing with the Rebbe;
ווערט ער איין זאך מיטן רבי'ן;
However, at the time that he goes out into the street to do his mission from the Rebbe –
one needs an explanation of how he becomes an agent,
and it is a question with what kind of force he becomes like the sender:
There is a level of "a person's agent is like himself",
then comes –
("a person's agent is like himself")
literally,
and in agency there are several interpretations,
and in general –
three levels:
whether the action becomes the sender's,
whether the power of the action becomes the sender's,
whether his entire existence becomes the sender's.
But at the time that he studies the Torah of the Rebbe –
one does not need any explanations about this,
because it states explicitly,
that through this between him and the Rebbe there is a "wondrous unity, the likes of which there is no unity, nor anything comparable to it, found at all etc.",
there is no unity that is so strong. It follows that this is stronger than all the manners of "a person's agent is like himself" which he can attain through doing his mission of the Rebbe in the world!
Regarding a simple servant –
one must arrive at the continuation of 5666 for explanations as this is,
and one learns it and one writes it,
and presumably one understands it...;
און מסתמא פארשטייט מען דאס...;
but regarding the unity that is achieved through the study of Torah with understanding and comprehension –
one does not need any extra explanations.
Consequently –
why should he go out from his four cubits into the street to disseminate Judaism and through this become a person's agent like himself –
when he can study his Torah and through this he is assured that there is between him and the Rebbe the strongest unity that can possibly be –
"a wondrous unity that there is no unity like it nor comparable to it found at all etc."?!
One tells him:
The sender knew about all these explanations and innovations and logical arguments that can occur to dialecticians and intellectuals and devoted servants. And nevertheless he said,
that he wants that one should go out literally into the world,
that it should be "and Jacob lifted his feet" into "Charan",
"the fierce anger of the Omnipresent in the world",
where "Lavan" is found,
and he should accomplish there that from "the daughters are my daughters and the sons are my sons and the flock is my flock and all that you see is mine" of Lavan –
they should become the sons and daughters and flock of Jacob;
זאלן זיי ווערן בני ובנות וצאן יעקב;
the "all that you see is mine" of Lavan should become "mine" of Jacob –
"and I had ox and donkey, flock etc.".
And one may add to this:
Our sages of blessed memory say that "every place where 'mine' is stated, it does not move forever". And in the aforementioned service it means:
At the time of "and Jacob lifted his feet" and one goes out into the street to spread Judaism
(and make from the "mine" of "Lavan" –
"mine" of a Jew) –
it is not the explanation that he runs out from his own four cubits into the street and says there a few words,
and afterwards he runs immediately back into his own four cubits,
rather it must be in a manner of "mine" that "it does not move forever":
he must occupy himself internally with those who are found in the street to accomplish with them matters of Judaism,
until that even if a conduct of "by day the heat consumed me and the frost by night" is felt –
he does this as well.
And through that which one is occupied with the general matter of spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings outward,
that one publicizes Divinity in the world,
"I will proclaim My name throughout the land"
(as the conclusion of the lesson of Chumash of 22 Tevet) –
the tidings of redemption "and I will set a redemption between My people and your people" is fulfilled in actuality
(the beginning of the lesson of Chumash),
Through that which there is first the "come to Pharaoh"
(as it is stated in the portion of Shlach) –
as explained in the Zohar that the Almighty says to Moses "come to Pharaoh" when Pharaoh stands with all his might,
the might of the husk,
and Moses acts upon him,
until that it becomes "and it was when Pharaoh sent",
that Pharaoh himself sends out the Jews from Egypt,
consequently the "but for this purpose I have raised you up etc. so that My name may be proclaimed throughout the land" is fulfilled in actuality,
as explained in Chassidus *158 the matter of "and it was when Pharaoh sent",
that he caused the growth of the salvations of Israel after the sowing in the exile of Egypt,
as the statement of our sages of blessed memory on the verse "he who sows first produces korin",
"and they shall fill the face of the world with produce",
and through this there was added in the revelation of Divinity in the world etc.
And already earlier in the portion of Bo the redemption begins,
as discussed there regarding the Paschal offering and the redemption etc.
And the redemption from Egypt effects a redemption upon all the generations entirely –
as is known what the Maharal writes
(in connection with the phrase "who redeemed our fathers and redeemed us from Egypt"),
that the redemption from Egypt accomplished that the matter of servitude upon Jews was nullified,
and never again will Jews be slaves.
When one once reviewed the words of the Maharal, one asked –
where is it stated in the revealed Torah? It is stated in the Sifra on the portion of Behar,
and Rashi in his commentary on the Torah brings it down
(that is,
(ד. ה.
Rashi,
whose matter is the plain meaning of the verse,
continues the Sifra into the world of the simple meaning]:
On the verse "for they are My servants" it is stated in the Sifra
(and Rashi explains)
"My deed is prior".
That is, that after the giving of the Torah, Jews became servants of the Almighty,
and "My deed is prior",
consequently no one can place them into servitude –
without any difference whether this is a gentile,
or with due distinction a court,
or the heavenly court,
all this does not change the essence of Jews at all. Because "My deed is prior".
And consequently, the Exodus from Egypt is for all generations. And especially when it speaks about this in the Torah,
for every word in the Torah is eternal for all times
(with the proofs from "Vayoel Moshe"), as mentioned above
(sum total).
Discourse (in the manner of a talk)
beginning with the words "He is Aharon and Moshe, etc."
It is also customary to study a verse from Rashi's commentary on our portion,
or a matter that Rashi does not explain
(although according to the plain meaning of the verse, an explanation would seemingly be required),
and also a matter in the notes of my father on the Zohar of the weekly portion.
In *165 our portion, there is a matter that is seemingly entirely incomprehensible according to the plain meaning,
and Rashi does not address it:
In our portion
(and in chapter Bo)
it speaks about the plagues. Rashi says that each plague "lasted a quarter of a month"
(and the plague of the firstborn was one moment),
and afterwards the plague ceased. And therefore, afterwards, another plague was needed. With one single exception –
the plague of frogs:
It states in the verse that Moshe said to Pharaoh –
and emphasized twice –
that the frogs "only in the river shall they remain." The question arises why specifically from this plague something remained afterwards,
while all the plagues ceased after a time
(a week);
(א שבוע);
and Rashi does not address it?!
Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra explains:
"And the meaning of 'in the river shall they remain' –
because there they were initially." But:
"And the river shall swarm with frogs" is the explanation
(according to the plain meaning)
not that frogs that were there previously came out of the river,
but rather that frogs were created anew from the river
(because of the plague),
and before this there were no frogs in the river in Egypt *.
And as we learned earlier in chapter Bereishit "Let the waters swarm, etc.",
it is proven that the word refers to their creation anew from the water. It is understood that "And the river shall swarm with frogs" means that the frogs were created anew from the river,
and not that "there they were initially"
(as Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra writes).
And of course also from Rashi's commentary on this very matter:
"And the frog came up" which is "and the river shall swarm" –
"There was one frog and they struck it and it spewed forth swarms, swarms." From which it is understood that this one frog was the sole possibility for frogs
(plural)
and there was an additional miracle –
"and it spewed forth, etc."
Also according to the second explanation in Rashi "the swarming of the frogs he calls by the singular term, etc.",
this is like the explanation of Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra,
that they
(the frogs)
were previously in the river –
in addition to the main point –
that "in the river shall they remain" must be understood according to all explanations – is (a)
although Rashi writes on this
(second)
explanation "and its plain meaning",
unlike on the first explanation "this is its midrashic meaning" –
nevertheless, since Rashi brings the first explanation earlier,
it is proven that it is closer to the way of the plain meaning. (b)
And the main point:
Why should one strain to say that the difference between the two explanations is from one extreme to the other,
that according to the first explanation the "one frog" did not exist previously and was only now created,
unlike according to the second explanation the frogs were not created now –
when in simplicity the difference between them is only in this detail,
that according to the first explanation "frog" means in the singular form –
because of this that "there was one frog, etc.",
unlike according to the second explanation –
"frog" in the singular form refers to the species of frog.
The aforementioned question remains:
Why specifically by the plague of frogs was it "in the river shall they remain",
unlike the other plagues of which no trace remained? And Moshe emphasizes this twice!
In the notes of my father on the Zohar of our portion, there is a matter that he brings from the Igrot Kodesh of the old Rebbe in connection with the matter of the passing of the righteous
(connected to the day of the hillula of the 24th of Tevet):
He dwells on what is stated in the Zohar of our portion "Rabbi Abba wept and said, 'Woe, when you will depart from the world and the world will remain orphaned from you, who will be able to illuminate the words of Torah?' Rabbi Abba opened and said, 'And you shall say thus: "Peace be to you, and peace be to your house, and peace be to all that you have," etc.'"
And he explains "the precision of the language: 'When you will be removed from the world and the world will remain orphaned from you,'
for prima facie 'and the world will remain orphaned from you' is superfluous, because it is understood that when he will be removed, the world will remain orphaned from him." –
Then "it is explained that the mere fact that he will be removed is not sufficient so that there will not be found one who can illuminate, etc." And he explains this based on what is explained in Iggeret HaKodesh,
that the students of the tzaddik receive from him after his passing,
and consequently his students "will be able to illuminate words of Torah with the power of the essential spirit of Rabbi Shimon." "Therefore he added to say 'and the world will remain orphaned from you,'
that is, when the world alone will remain –
orphaned from you –
so that his students will not be, etc."
Afterwards he explains another interpretation of this based on the aforementioned Iggeret HaKodesh,
that the two expressions correspond to the passing of the two aspects which are discussed in the explanation of the aforementioned Iggeret HaKodesh.
According to what is explained in the note, it follows
that there are three levels –
three generations:
The generation and level of the tzaddik himself
(Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, as discussed in the Zohar),
the generation and level of his students,
and the generation and level of the students of his students,
"the offshoots of offshoots." And in other words,
and as the Tzemach Tzedek explains this elsewhere –
the aspect of aftergrowths.
And he also explains in the note the three levels in the verse "And you shall be at peace,"
"and your house shall be at peace,"
"and all that is yours shall be at peace."
However, he does not explain in the note the matter of this in the service of man.
Continuing from what was mentioned regarding "And you shall be at peace, and your house shall be at peace, and all that is yours shall be at peace" –
this is the place to mention a matter of "Great is hospitality, for it brings near"
(the matter of peace):
On this Shabbat, the continuation of the "meeting" which began before Shabbat occurs. And through Divine Providence it was called
(in this year)
by the name "Jewish Possibilities,"
"Yiddishe Meglichkeiten,"
and not "Possibilities of a Jew." And the difference:
"Possibilities of a Jew" means that the possibilities and the self are two separate things,
only that a Jew was given certain possibilities.
In contrast, "Jewish Possibilities" means that the "possibilities" themselves are Jewish,
completely permeated with Judaism,
and as a result of his being a Jew –
he has the
(Jewish)
possibilities.
This is similar to the difference in how one translates the Land of Israel:
a land where there are Jews, or
(as the matter truly is) –
the Jewish land,
as it is said "a land which the L-rd your G-d cares for; the eyes of the L-rd your G-d are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year,"
it is a land where "the eyes of the L-rd your G-d,"
the providence of the Holy One, blessed be He –
for He and His providence are one
(as explained in Shaarei HaYichud VeHaEmunah) –
is always there. Consequently, it is a Jewish land –
completely permeated with Judaism
(and not, G-d forbid, that Judaism and the land are two separate things).
From this also emerges a practical difference:
"Possibilities of a Jew" leaves the Jew in the category of an individual –
that as an individual Jew he has certain possibilities and a certain mission. Consequently, he can argue:
Since he is an individual with a mission and possibilities of an individual,
he can conduct himself as he wishes:
if he wants, he will conduct himself properly and utilize his possibilities and receive reward for it,
and if he wants, he can forgo his own reward,
and let them whip him,
but who can say to him, 'What do you do?'
he is an individual;
ער איז א יחיד;
However, when one says that every Jew has "Jewish Possibilities," this takes him out of the category of an individual,
and places him into the category that he is a part of a collective and a multitude of Jews,
because his possibilities are a part of the "Jewish Possibilities" that all Jews have,
consequently, he cannot forgo his mission and his possibilities,
because they are not his possibilities as an individual,
but rather "Jewish Possibilities,"
as a part of the collective of Jews. And when he fails to utilize his possibilities, it affects all Jews.
Another point regarding this:
From the fact that it is called "Jewish Possibilities," it is also understood that his responsibility to utilize the possibilities is not only because he is a part of all other Jews,
but also because of the Above:
Since the Almighty created the human being,
this is certainly with a purpose and intention,
that the human being has a specific task and mission to fulfill. As a simple person understands:
When he
(the human being)
works and toils on something,
an hour,
a day,
a continuous period of time –
there is certainly a purpose and intention in this;
איז זיכער דא אין דעם א תכלית וכוונה;
he would not toil unnecessarily!
And all the more so and how much more so regarding the Almighty.
And since the Almighty created a human being with a purpose and intention –
He certainly gave him the capabilities so that he could fulfill his task and mission
(because if not –
how could He give him such a task).
So too regarding a Jew:
The Almighty certainly gave a Jew the "power" and "possibility" –
"Jewish possibilities" –
so that he could fulfill his mission in the world.
From this it is understood,
that since the Almighty gave him "Jewish possibilities",
it is understood that also in these possibilities there is a purpose and intention,
that he should utilize them.
And as our Sages of blessed memory said –
"Everything that the Holy One, blessed be He, created in His world, He did not create a single thing for naught." As a simple person understands regarding himself:
He will not toil on something without any need,
for naught
(as above).
And consequently, if a Jew, heaven forbid, does not utilize the possibilities that the Almighty gave him –
he confuses the entire order of creation!
And one could elaborate on this.
The main thing is actual deed –
the matter of "Great is a drink that brings close":
Since the continuation of the "meeting" takes place on this Shabbat,
they will give –
in the presence of the multitude that is now here –
a drink from the farbrengen before the "meeting". For this is a farbrengen that takes place within the four cubits of the synagogue where his holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, performed his service for ten consecutive years
[And although now he is not present physically –
the influenced ones that emerge from such a "meeting" are analogous to the matter of aftergrowths,
students of students that exist even after the passing of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, as explained in the note (as above, page 74)].
And one should also announce about this now.
So too, they will give a drink for the Melaveh Malkah farbrengen of the "Descendants of his holiness the Alter Rebbe" that takes place on this Motzaei Shabbat,
and for the Melaveh Malkah of Tzach that will take place on the coming Motzaei Shabbat –
the 11th of Av. And also about this, one should announce now.
In connection with the farbrengen of Melaveh Malkah of the "Descendants of his holiness the Alter Rebbe" that will take place, with the help of God, in the holy metropolis –
it is worthwhile to note,
that the name "Descendants of his holiness the Alter Rebbe" is in accordance with the ruling of the Alter Rebbe regarding the translation of the word "descendants":
Regarding the text "and we and our descendants, etc."
(in the blessing "And please make pleasant" in the blessing of the Torah) –
the Alter Rebbe says at his table,
and these are his words:
"And there are those who are precise to add 'and the descendants of our descendants,'
for whoever has a son and a grandson, the Torah will never cease from his seed forever.
And it is not necessary for this,
for in the category of 'our descendants' are also included grandchildren." And in his Siddur he ruled and established
(only)
"and our descendants."
That is, the name "Descendants of his holiness the Alter Rebbe" –
although it concerns a seventh generation,
an eighth, etc. –
is in accordance with the ruling of the Alter Rebbe,
that also grandchildren
(until the end of all generations)
are included in his descendants.
And one could say,
that the reason for this that the Alter Rebbe in his Siddur established
(only)
"and our descendants" –
and did not add also "and the descendants of our descendants"
(to be concerned for the opinion that "our descendants" means only children) –
is in addition to that which "it is not necessary for this"
(and therefore "one should not change the text"),
but rather –
it can be sweetened with that which in this specific text there is an advantage:
If one adds
(also)
"and the descendants of our descendants" –
the request
(of peace)
is only for his children and grandchildren,
and regarding the later generations one must come to "the Torah returns to its lodging place";
און בנוגע צו די שפעטערדיקע דורות דארף מען אנקומען צו "תורה 185 מחזרת על אכסניא שלה" 190;
not so when one says
(only)
"and our descendants" because the word means
(also)
grandchildren until the end of all generations –
all generations are included in the request itself.
And one must say a lesson based on this regarding the group "Descendants of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe" –
And the main point is:
Their connection and relationship to the Alter Rebbe is in a direct manner:
Their connection and relationship to the Alter Rebbe is
(not only because their great-great-grandfathers were descendants of the Alter Rebbe, but)
that they themselves are
(according to the ruling of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe)
His descendants.
And to add:
That in the name "Descendants of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe" –
All descendants from all generations together are included. His descendants in our generation,
and his children
(simply) –
including also his son who succeeded him –
All together are included in one and the same name.
And it is simple,
that contemplation on the above
(even a light contemplation)
increases even more the feeling of responsibility
(together with the feeling of privilege) –
to go "in the straight path which He has taught us from His ways, and we will walk in His paths."
In order that the gathering of the descendants
(and the good resolutions for "we will walk in His paths")
should be with even more success –
they will take beverage
(to the gathering)
from the present gathering,
which has a special connection to the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe,
because this gathering is on the Shabbat which is close to and the day after his yahrzeit,
and also a special connection to the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the leader of our generation –
the one who succeeded the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe –
because this is the gathering of Shabbat Mevarchim the month of Shevat,
the tenth day of which is his yahrzeit,
in addition to the fact that also the place of the present gathering is the place where he performed his service during his last ten years in his life and vitality in this world.
An additional virtue in the aforementioned beverage –
that into it is mixed and poured beverage from the Jews who are located
(for now)
behind the Iron Curtain,
and in particular –
in the country of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe.
For they are all descendants of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe,
through their actual self-sacrifice for Judaism –
in the manner and with the power of the self-sacrifice of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe.
Through the fact that they will "use" the beverage at the gathering of the descendants of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe
(and likewise at the other gatherings)
in this country –
it will also be a giving of strength that also they
(in this country)
should stand in the movement of self-sacrifice,
self-sacrifice out of rest and expansion,
and likewise conversely,
that the Jews who are located behind the Iron Curtain should very soon go out from there and be redeemed from the strait to the expanse –
as much as "expanse" is possible in the time of exile, –
and following this and immediately after this, all together,
and together with all Jews,
should very soon go out from exile in the true and complete redemption,
through our righteous Mashiach,
speedily in our days, literally.
Afterwards, the Rebbe, may he live for many good days, gave bottles of beverage to:
R. Y. Ch. Shiyicha
(for the meeting).
R. D.R. Shiyicha
(for the Melaveh Malkah of Chabad).
The student Sh. Z. L. Shiyicha
(for the Holy Land):
R. Sh.B. Shiyicha
(for the Melaveh Malkah of "Descendants of the Rebbe, the Alter Rebbe").
Afterwards he said:
Since it is Shabbat –
one should distribute a part of the beverage here,
and the rest –
at the gatherings. And one should now announce about all these three things.
After they announced about the above –
he began to play a melody and "I will pour out for you a blessing."
Afterwards, he turned to the cantor to play "May it be His will that the Holy Temple be built, etc."
