English translation 1
First of all, this is a farbrengen connected with Chanukah.
First of all, this is a farbrengen connected with Chanukah.
And although the farbrengen is simply due to another reason
(Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh,
as instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe1),
on the other hand,
regarding Chanukah, our Rebbes did not make a farbrengen every day –
nevertheless, according to the Gemara that the special festivals require an elevation,
in the language of the Gemara2 "ah'nai",
also to the daily offerings that are brought on that day,
it is understood,
since today is Chanukah,
a festival,
established for Hallel and thanksgiving,
this is "ah'nai" and it elevates the farbrengen
(even if the reason for the farbrengen is Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh).
And although Hallel and thanksgiving are not unique only to the days of Chanukah,
rather we say them several times a year,
and several times a year we complete the Hallel
[as the Alter Rebbe's sign for this "B'B'T'Ch"3] –
nevertheless, the Hallel and thanksgiving of Chanukah have a special elevation regarding the other days of the year when there is Hallel and thanksgiving,
because on Chanukah this is connected with the Chanukah lights
[as we will not study the matter of the Chanukah miracle,
whether it is divided into two miracles,
the miracle of the flask of oil and the miracle of the victory of the war,
or one miracle –
complete Hallel is [recited] on all eight days of Chanukah according to everyone due to the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days4],
and the Chanukah lights have in them a special elevation that "these lights are never nullified"5. And the explanation of the elevation:
There is a principle that an effect cannot be stronger and contain more than its causes. And in the language of the Gemara6,
"Rabbi did not teach [it]; from where did Rabbi Chiya have it?" A recipient cannot have more than the seller sells him.
But regarding the Chanukah lights we see a novelty in this:
The cause of the Chanukah lights are the lights of the Temple.
Nevertheless, the Chanukah lights have in them an elevation regarding the lights of the Temple:
The lights of the Temple were nullified
(a short time (relatively) after the Chanukah miracle),
in contrast, the Chanukah lights "are never nullified",
even after the destruction of the Holy Temple,
in the time of exile. And "are never nullified" is not only regarding the time of exile,
but also in the future to come –
as our Sages said8:
"All the festivals will be nullified
(in the future to come)
except for Chanukah and Purim." And although the explanation of this is
(as explained in Chassidus9)
that the festivals in the future to come will be in the manner of "a candle at midday"10
(but not that they are nullified literally) –
nevertheless, in practice, the language used for this is "nullified";
איז אבער בפועל דער לשון וואס מ'נוצט אויף דעם "בטלין";
for whatever reason, they become "nullified" in contrast to Chanukah and Purim which will then not be nullified
(in the manner that the other festivals become nullified).
From this it is understood,
that when a farbrengen occurs during the days of Chanukah,
Chanukah is "ah'nai" and adds an elevation in the matter of the "daily offerings" of the farbrengen
(due to Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh) –
the elevation of "are never nullified".
The lesson from this in actual deed for each and every one,
also for the simplest of the simple:
The purpose of a farbrengen is that one should then accept good resolutions,
and the main thing –
to bring them down into actual deed. As explained in many sichos of our Rebbes11,
and also alluded to in the maamarim12.
In this very matter, one can do a thing in Torah and mitzvos that has an effect within speech,
a walk of a mil,
an hour,
a day,
a year, and so forth.
We have the lesson from the farbrengen that occurs during the days of Chanukah,
that there must be an action that is never nullified.
And simply understood is the difference in the effort to do an action that has an impression only for a duration of time,
regarding the effort to do an action that has an impression
(not only an impression,
but with all force)
forever
(are never nullified).
The lesson of Shabbat Chanukah is regarding every Torah and mitzvos
(that one must do them in a manner of are never nullified).
And especially is the lesson,
as understood,
regarding the special service connected with Chanukah –
self-sacrifice for the soul,
self-sacrifice for Torah,
as explained in Shaarei Orah13,
and in the letters of the revealed [Torah] in Levush14,
that the difference between Purim and Chanukah is:
Purim is connected with the body and Chanukah with the soul. What body and soul are in service is –
mitzvos and Torah.
That is, Chanukah is especially connected with self-sacrifice for the soul,
which is self-sacrifice for Torah.
Everything derives from Torah –
He looked into the Torah and created the world15. It is understood that in Torah itself, Chanukah is connected with the soul of Torah
(and Purim –
with the body of Torah).
Which is the inner dimension of Torah –
the soul of Torah.
As it states in the Zohar, Parshat Beha'alotecha16,
that if everything is with Divine Providence,
certainly it is so in Torah,
the revealed aspect of Torah,
all the more so the inner dimension of Torah. Thus Chanukah and its matters have a special connection with "Beha'alotecha et ha'nerot",
the section in the Zohar where it states that the inner dimension of Torah is the soul of Torah,
the essence of Chanukah
(connected with the soul) –
And as discussed many times, Chanukah is connected with the miracle of the oil and one lights the Chanukah lights with oil, etc.17,
and it is explained in many places in Chassidus18 that oil in Torah is the inner dimension of Torah
(the soul of Torah),
and within this itself –
the soul of the soul of Torah:
wine is the soul of Torah,
and "oil that floats on top of wine"19 is the soul of the soul of Torah.
And the emphasis in Chanukah is to bring forth the inner dimension of Torah so that it will have influence and effect also on the outside,
therefore one lights the Chanukah lights
(whose content is the inner dimension of Torah,
the oil of Torah)
"at20 the entrance of his house from the outside"21. And this is the general content of "May your springs spread forth outward" –
one disseminates the springs of the inner dimension of Torah outward.
From this it follows,
that the lesson of Chanukah,
that all matters must be done in a manner of "never nullified" –
is particularly regarding involvement in the dissemination of the springs outward,
that one must do this in a manner not that there is only an impression for a limited time,
but "never nullified".
And the effect of the Chanukah lights outside –
the dissemination of the springs outward –
must be "until the foot ceases from the market",
"until the foot of the Tarmodite ceases"22.
And the explanation of this –
which must be understood also by everyone,
also by the simplest of the simple,
because all were included in the miracle of Chanukah,
and "they too were involved in that miracle"23,
also women and children:
The Gemara22 says regarding the time of lighting the Chanukah light that "its mitzvah is from sunset until the foot ceases from the market". And the Gemara interprets and gives a sign for this –
"until the foot of the Tarmodite ceases".
Although on the simple level this is a sign for when one must light the Chanukah lights,
it is nevertheless understood simply,
since they specifically give this sign,
and not any other sign,
it must also have an inner connection with the matter. As implied by the Shulchan Aruch24 that the time for lighting the Chanukah lights is not "until the foot of the Tarmodite ceases" in every place according to its time,
rather in every place one must light at the same time,
consequently they could have given a different sign for the time of lighting the Chanukah lights.
Even if there will be a stubborn person who will want to say that there is no other sign that can be given for this –
firstly (a),
this is not true.
And secondly (b),
according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov25 that from everything a person sees or hears he must derive a lesson in his service of his Creator. And this is understood simply also for a simple person:
When a person hears or sees something,
it becomes a part of his life,
and his life is "I was created to serve my Creator"26,
consequently it must provide him a lesson in his service of his Creator. And the explanation of this is,
whether the thing he sees or hears could have been otherwise or not –
since he saw or heard it, he must derive a lesson from it.
Regarding this matter:
Even if one will say that the Gemara could not give another sign for the time of lighting the Chanukah light,
nevertheless, since a Jew has heard about this Gemara,
it becomes a part of his life,
consequently he must learn from it a lesson to serve his Creator.
And particularly in our case,
since the Gemara could have given a different sign for this,
and it specifically gives the sign "until the foot of the Tarmodite ceases",
it is understood that this sign has an inner connection with Chanukah.
How does a simple person understand the connection? He understands it simply:
When a Jew lights the Chanukah candles "at the entrance of his house on the outside," the measure for this must be,
that it should cause "until the foot ceases from the marketplace,
until the foot of the Tarmodai ceases" –
until those who are in the street should stop wandering there and enter their homes.
What is the concept of "Tarmodai"? He is told,
that the Gemara says in Yevamos27 that this refers to a tribe of people who come from a city called Tarmod,
who were mamzerim who came from the servants of Shlomo who rebelled against him28 – in any case –
not straightforward people.
What is the content of "Tarmod"? He is told that "Tarmod is the letters of Moredes (rebellious)"29,
so even a simple person understands that if two words have the same letters,
they presumably have a connection between them.
From this he understands that the lighting of Chanukah candles must cause that "the foot of the Tarmodai" –
of rebels –
should cease wandering in the street
("until the foot of the Tarmodai ceases").
And the explanation of this:
The reality of a rebel is,
that regarding everything that is said to him,
he immediately says the opposite
(without contemplating it),
he is a rebel against it. One tells him a straightforward thing –
he says the opposite! One tells him "the word of Hashem30 this is the halacha"31 –
he says the opposite is logical.
This is the opposite of the true reality of a Jew:
The nature of a Jew is,
that when one tells him a good thing –
he immediately obeys. As it was at the giving of the Torah:
Immediately when they told the Jews about Torah and mitzvos –
they said "Naaseh"32. And as the Gemara33 explains that this is the nature of the Jewish people,
and brings on this the verse34 "the integrity of the upright shall guide them".
And this is the nature of every Jew –
because all Jews until the end of all generations stood at Mount Sinai and said "Naaseh"
(as it states in Pirkei d'Rebbi Eliezer35).
That is, every Jew is by nature a follower,
one who accepts the yoke36,
he is "sworn and standing from Mount Sinai"37.
It is true that after the preface of "Naaseh" there must be "Nishma",
understanding and comprehension and grasping the matter intellectually,
and if one does not understand,
one must ask all questions until one will understand it,
as the Torah itself instructs –
"the shy person does not learn"38:
When he hears a matter in the Written Torah and Oral Torah from his teacher or Rosh Yeshiva,
he might have shame of honor,
that how can he ask a question about it –
the Torah tells him "the shy person does not learn",
he must ask questions until he will understand the matter intellectually!
But with one condition:
His questions and his intellect should not prevent the fulfillment of the Torah's mitzvos and actual deed.
That is, first and foremost there must be the preface of "Naaseh",
acceptance of the yoke,
and afterwards there must be for him "Nishma",
because this is the nature of a Jew:
When one tells him a good thing, first of all he obeys.
Furthermore:
The very fact that there is the "Nishma",
comes from the "Naaseh",
his acceptance of the yoke:
Since the Torah tells a Jew that he must learn with understanding and comprehension,
and it is a positive commandment that a Jew should be a scholar –
he learns with understanding and comprehension and asks questions etc.
That is, his acceptance of the yoke
("Naaseh")
permeates him entirely,
all his soul powers,
also his intellect in his head,
and consequently
(due to his acceptance of the yoke)
he uses his intellect to understand every matter,
and he asks all kinds of questions etc.
It follows that the nature of a Jew is to obey,
the opposite of "Moredes",
rebellion.
And that which one sees that a person sometimes does not want to fulfill something until he first understands it –
this is an added thing upon his true reality,
due to exile;
מצד גלות;
it is the "alien god"39,
a foreign thing. He argues –
but the "alien god" is "within you"39? –
He is told,
that this is exile,
that a foreign thing has attached itself to him,
but his true reality is to obey,
he only needs to remove the external thing that has attached itself to him.
Based on this, the content of the Chanukah candles which must cause "until the foot of the Tarmodai ceases" is understood:
Through the fact that a Jew lights the Chanukah candles
(at the entrance of his house on the outside),
he must illuminate with "a mitzvah is a lamp and the Torah is light" 40,
and especially
(in the Torah itself with the light of the inner dimension of the Torah,
the oil that is in the Torah) –
both on himself and on the other in the public domain
(in the marketplace) –
the true reality is,
that a Jew is one who accepts the yoke 36,
the opposite of "rebellious",
consequently he thereby causes that "the foot of the Tarmodai ceases",
"the foot of the Tarmodai" –
rebels –
stop roaming in the street,
and at the time that he causes the reality of "the foot of the Tarmodai" to cease,
all the more so does he cause this in their head!
And the "measure" of lighting the Chanukah candles is –
"until the foot of the Tarmodai ceases",
it must shine until it causes that the rebels stop roaming in the street.
That is, "until the foot of the Tarmodai ceases" is not merely a sign of when one must light the candle,
but rather an instruction and lesson for a Jew whose Chanukah candles must accomplish,
that they should effect "until the foot of the Tarmodai ceases",
and that he certainly has the power to accomplish this.
One could think that the meaning of "the foot of the Tarmodai ceases" is,
that one must nullify their existence entirely;
אז מ'דארף זיי מאכן אויס מציאות לגמרי;
one will take the Chanukah candle and burn, Heaven forbid, the rebels.
But specifically a simple person does not understand it that way:
the simple meaning of "the foot of the Tarmodai ceases" is not that they cease to exist,
but rather that they cease from roaming in the street,
in the marketplace,
rather they go into their houses,
into the private domain.
And through this the person ceases to be a "public domain" person,
and he becomes a "private domain" person,
because his house is a private domain:
even a completely righteous person may carry throughout the entire Shabbat in this house,
even if it is a very large house.
And furthermore:
Through the fact that "the foot of the Tarmodai ceases", the public domain also ceases to be a public domain
(in spiritual matters),
because "any [domain] through which less than six hundred thousand do not pass every day is not a public domain"
(according to the opinion of most halachic authorities 41)
and a place through which pass
(normally)
even one less than sixty myriads is not a public domain.
And all the more so much less than sixty myriads
(similar to the situation of "the foot ceases from the marketplace",
"the foot of the Tarmodai ceases",
which means that there are no people in the street).
And spiritually this means:
Through the Chanukah candles one must illuminate the street in a manner that all the rebels who were roaming in the street should stop roaming there,
and from the reality of "mountains of separation" of this world,
the public domain,
should become a private domain,
where the Oneness of the world shines openly.
It follows from this that "the foot of the Tarmodai ceases" does not mean that one nullifies their existence,
rather –
as a simple person understands it simply –
one transforms them so that instead of them roaming in the street they should be in the private domain.
When one engages in investigation with an intellectual,
he argues that "the foot of the Tarmodai ceases" means that one nullifies their existence;
טענה'ט ער אז "כליא ריגלא דתרמודאי" מיינט אז מ'מאכט זיי אויס מציאות;
but specifically a simple person –
for whom "the simpler a person is...
the better" 42 –
learns the matter simply,
and the simple content of it is,
that the "foot of the Tarmodai" stop roaming in the street,
and go into the house, into the private domain.
And this is like the second
(higher)
interpretation 43 of "and I will cause evil beasts to cease from the land" 44,
"I will cause them to cease so that they do not harm". Not that they cease to exist entirely,
rather they cease from being harmful and rebellious,
and become helpers to holiness.
In the language of the Gemara 45 regarding the primordial serpent –
that it becomes a "great servant". And in the service [of G-d]:
"with all your heart 46 –
with both your inclinations" 47.
And this is like it is regarding the entirety of physical existence,
that physical existence becomes one thing with the true existence 48,
as discussed many times.
And this is also regarding "the foot of the Tarmodai ceases":
the intention in this is not to nullify their existence entirely,
rather to transform them,
so that instead of them roaming in the street they should enter the private domain,
and become helpers to holiness.
This is the lesson of Chanukah:
The main aspect of the Chanukah lights is to be "at the entrance of his house from the outside" –
also to illuminate the street
[not like a mezuzah whose main aspect is connected with guarding the house and what is within it].
A Jew must know,
that at the time he lights the Chanukah light he must thereby effect and bring about a change in the street –
he must illuminate the street with "a mitzvah is a lamp and Torah is light",
including and especially the light of the inner dimension of the Torah
(the oil in the Torah).
Until the measure of this is –
"until the foot of the Tarmudite is spent",
he should bring about that the "foot of the Tarmudite",
the reality of the rebels,
should become "spent",
they should stop roaming the street,
and enter into the private domain,
where they then become transformed into helpers of holiness.
Similar to "with all your heart, with both your inclinations".
And as explained49 regarding the matter of "Draw me, we will run after You"50,
that through the divine soul transforming the animal soul,
"we will run" becomes plural, referring to the divine soul and the animal soul.
But afterwards it says "the King has brought me into His chambers",
"He has brought me" in the singular
(unlike "we will run" which is plural),
because this refers to the divine soul alone. But in the matter at hand, which concerns bringing about the "spending of the foot of the Tarmudite" regarding Jews who are in the marketplace –
not only does "we will run" apply to them
(in the plural),
but also "the King has brought me
(in the singular)
into His chambers" applies to them
(since they are Jews).
One might think that the way to bring about the "spending of the foot of the Tarmudite" through the Chanukah lights is by lighting the Chanukah candles,
and opening the door or window,
and letting them burn for the30 or50 minutes51,
while he himself goes to sleep and lets the candles accomplish with the "foot of the Tarmudite".
And an intellectual brings a proof to this –
he explicitly heard at a farbrengen that the Chanukah candles have the power to bring about "spending of the foot of the Tarmudite"!
They tell him:
The Nasi of our generation also knew about all these calculations,
and knew what is stated in the Chassidic discourses –
and nevertheless he said that it is not enough to light the candles and do nothing else,
rather one must go out literally into the street and there seek out Jews who have within them a matter of "Tarmudite" –
and due to our many sins one does not need to search too much for this –
and effect upon them, first and foremost, that they fulfill one mitzvah,
And first and foremost during the days of Chanukah –
the first mitzvah that one effects upon that person to do –
should be the mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah candles. For when one approaches that person and tells him to fulfill mitzvos,
he can argue:
What is different about today? But when one tells him that it is the days of Chanukah,
therefore he should light Chanukah candles –
this settles with him.
And through the fact that one effects upon him to fulfill this one mitzvah,
afterwards one mitzvah brings another mitzvah,
until it will become "spending of the foot of the Tarmudite" –
they will stop roaming the street and will enter the house,
into the private domain.
And even this is understood specifically by a simple person,
that the meaning of the above discussion is not that one should light the candles and go to sleep,
rather one should go out and act with other Jews,
and if only the intellectuals would understand this as well...
He argues that he has already done the avodah during several days of Chanukah,
so seemingly he no longer needs to do anything further in this?
They tell him,
that when a new day of Chanukah arrives,
one lights an additional new candle,
which indicates a new and higher manner of avodah than in the previous days.
Moreover:
One lights the Chanukah candles "corresponding to the days that are going out"
(according to the opinion of Beis Hillel52).
That is, on the third day of Chanukah one lights three candles –
corresponding to today and also the days that are going out which have already passed.
And accordingly, a wondrous matter emerges:
Even when one is engaged in the avodah of the present day,
one then has
(not only the new avodah of that day, but)
also the avodah of the previous days,
and one can rectify and complete them,
or bring about in them a higher elevation according to one's current level.
It is known that the Torah is the master of the world,
all the more so over the "small world," which is man53,
and a master also over the intercalated month of the world,
as we bring the proof for this from what the Gemara54 says on the verse55 "G-d concludes on my behalf" –
"If the court decided to intercalate the year
(for a month or for a year)
the virgins return."
That is, even on the eighth day of Chanukah,
the last day of Chanukah,
one lights eight candles corresponding to all the previous days,
which shows that then one has the power to complete the service of all the preceding days,
or to do a higher service for all the days,
which is only possible when he is elevated on the eighth day.
And from this comes the lesson:
Even if one performed during the first days of Chanukah the service of removing the "foot of the Tarmodai" through the Chanukah lights,
when a new day comes,
one must then not only do a new service in this,
but also complete –
even in the manner of "double for wisdom"56 –
that which one did not finish doing in the previous days,
or to do a higher service for the previous days which is only possible now that he has been elevated
(even though during the first days of Chanukah his service was complete according to his state then),
because those days are also in his possession today.
He argues –
what do they want from him:
he has already labored in the previous days of Chanukah and also before Chanukah,
and he will labor also after Chanukah
(and a good thought the Holy One, blessed be He, joins to action57) –
let them at least let him rest now! Especially since it is the day of Shabbos,
the day of rest,
even "complete rest"
(as we will now say for the Minchah prayer)!
They say to him,
that by Jews there are opposites simultaneously:
On one hand,
when the day of Shabbos comes,
there must be rest by a Jew,
a semblance and example of the rest that will be in the future to come,
in the "day that is entirely Shabbos and rest for the life of the worlds"58. Therefore on every Shabbos we say "A psalm, a song for the Shabbos day"59,
which refers to the "day that is entirely Shabbos and rest for the life of the worlds"60,
because on every Shabbos there is a semblance of that "day that is entirely Shabbos and rest". And it is understood that a semblance according to Torah is a connection and inner equivalence between the thing and that which is its semblance
(it is only that in this semblance and example it is not in completeness or in revelation, etc.).
Together with this they say that "students61 of the wise have no rest neither in this world nor in the World to Come, as it is stated62 they will go from strength to strength, he will appear before G-d in Zion". And every Jew is in the category of a student of the wise,
as it is written63 "and all your children shall be students of Hashem",
consequently by every Jew there must be "they have no rest",
and he must constantly go from strength to strength.
He immediately becomes humble,
he argues that he is not a student of the wise,
one cannot demand of him that there should be no rest by him.
To this comes the lesson from the continuation of the verse "
(and all your children shall be students of Hashem)
and great shall be the peace of your children –
do not read 'your children' but 'your builders'"61,
but this does not negate the simple interpretation that this refers to every Jew.
And therefore it is demanded of every Jew that there should never be any rest by him,
rather he must constantly be elevated higher and higher from strength to strength.
And even when the day of Shabbos comes,
the day of rest,
there must be by him the "they have no rest" in his service of Torah and mitzvos.
And on the contrary:
If on weekdays he may not rest but must constantly be elevated from strength to strength,
all the more so on the day of Shabbos!
He argues:
On the day of Shabbos he must eat the Shabbos meal,
aged wine and fatty meat64 and rest etc.,
in order to fulfill the mitzvah of Oneg Shabbos65. He wants to fulfill the mitzvah!
And here they do not demand –
he answers –
acceptance of the yoke:
not that he should eat and drink out of acceptance of the yoke,
where then he has no pleasure in it and meanwhile he should groan and sigh and complain –
about that which they force him to eat fatty meat and drink aged wine,
rather they demand of him that this should be out of pleasure
(Shabbos),
he should have enjoyment in it.
Indeed, in truth, from the perspective of the acceptance of the yoke of the servant,
the pleasure of the master becomes –
His pleasure,
but this is still pleasure,
let it be the pleasure of the master –
but still pleasure,
not acceptance of the yoke alone,
he will endeavor that the pleasure of the master become his pleasure. But during this, one demands of him that on the day of Shabbat he should eat and drink not from the aspect of acceptance of the yoke, but rather he should have pleasure in it.
Consequently,
what is demanded of him that by him on the day of Shabbat the service should be in a manner of "no rest,"
"they shall go from strength to strength"?
In Chassidus66 a story is brought that they showed how someone ate the Shabbat meal with delight and they saw an ox head in a shtreimel!
And at first glance this is not understood:
It is a mitzvah that one should eat the Shabbat meal with delight,
and how good –
ox meat,
which is tastier than poultry, sheep, goat, and fish meat
[at the third meal, the delight of delights, the emphasis is specifically on eating fish67,
but at the other Shabbat meals the halachah is that one must eat fatty meat],
and it is not demanded that this should be from acceptance of the yoke but specifically from delight
(as above) –
so why do they emphasize derogatorily that they saw an ox head sitting and eating in a shtreimel?!
And furthermore, primarily –
why is this story brought in Chassidus:
Even "regarding the disgrace of an unclean animal the Torah did not speak"68,
all the more so regarding a person,
all the more so that here it speaks about someone who wore a shtreimel,
not because he imitated another,
but because such was the truth of his level,
for if not, they would not have seen this,
for they only saw the truth of the matters?!
And especially since in Chassidus a story is rarely brought,
and specifically this story Chassidus records
(in copied and printed maamarim)!
The explanation of this is –
as was discussed previously69:
When one needs to issue a directive and law in practice,
one must say it in clear words,
and then it is not "the Torah twisted...
and did not utter an indecent expression from its mouth
(even regarding an animal)
"70 which is the difference between the unclean animals as they are discussed in Parshas Noach71 and in Parshas Shemini72:
In Parshas Noach this is not regarding issuing a directive and law,
therefore there "the Torah twisted eight letters and did not utter an indecent expression from its mouth",
but in Parshas Shemini this pertains to issuing a law and directive in practice,
therefore it is stated there in clear words.
Similarly regarding the story brought in Chassidus:
With this they intend to issue a directive in practice:
Just as in the world in general there are the four categories of domem, tzomeach, chai, medaber
(inanimate, vegetative, animate, speaking),
so too is this in the microcosm, man,
and especially regarding "you are called man"73,
among Jews,
that he has within himself all four categories of domem, tzomeach, chai, medaber.
And it is demanded of a Jew,
that within him should shine that which is higher even than the "ox" of holiness within him,
the aspect of the ox of the Chariot –
the aspect of the speaker within him.
That is, even when the day of Shabbat comes and then there is a positive commandment of Oneg Shabbat to eat and drink,
this must be by a Jew not in a manner like an ox
(the ox of holiness within him)
that sits in a shtreimel,
but rather by him that which is higher than this should shine –
the aspect of the speaker within him.
And similarly, this is also understood regarding our subject:
Standing on the day of Shabbat when a person must delight himself with eating and drinking –
the meaning is not that it remains at that,
but rather in this very thing there must be by him a service in a manner of "no rest,"
"they shall go from strength to strength,"
being elevated higher and higher.
And regarding the directive of Chanukah, this speaks not only concerning going from strength to strength in one's own service, but
(also)
that this should be noticeable and effect in the street,
in the marketplace,
that there should shine "a mitzvah is a lamp and Torah is light,"
until one removes "the foot of the Tarmodai."
And one can connect this with the portion that will be read at Minchah
(Parshas Vayigash)
and the haftarah of the portion –
briefly:
It is explained in various places that the concept of Joseph is Talmud
(master of Torah)
and the concept of Judah is deed
(master of good deeds).
And "And Judah approached him" is the connection and unification of Talmud and deed. And in the language of the haftarah of the portion –
"Take for yourself one stick and write upon it for Judah and for the children of Israel his companions, and take one stick and write upon it for Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and all the house of Israel his companions,
and bring them close one to another for yourself into one stick, and they shall become one in your hand." "And they shall be one in My hand"
(in the manner of the statement "One shall approach the other" *].
And this is in the manner of the concept of Chanukah:
The drawing down of "A mitzvah is a lamp and Torah is light",
and especially the innerness of the Torah,
the oil of the Torah
(the concept of Joseph)
into the outside,
into the world of action,
where the concept of deed is emphasized
(the concept of Judah).
That is, the connection of Talmud and deed.
And may it be His will that it should be "Give to the wise and he will become wiser",
and that one should interpret and bring down in actual deed all that was discussed above regarding the lesson and giving of power thereof that Shabbat is Chanukah,
And in general –
that a Jew must kindle the Chanukah lights,
"A mitzvah is a lamp and Torah is light",
in a manner of "until the foot of the Tarmodite ceases",
that he affects upon the "foot of the Tarmodite" that turn around in the street,
that they should stop turning there,
and enter the house,
the private domain.
And on each day of Chanukah one adds another light,
that is, in service that one must add even more in the service of illuminating the market so that it should be "the foot of the Tarmodite ceases",
and in addition one also offered the "emerging days",
consequently one must also add in the service of the previous days of Chanukah.
And all this must be done in a manner of "they are never nullified" –
that this should have an eternal effect.
And through all our deeds and service in the time of exile,
including the drawing down of the oil of the Torah into the outside
(during the days of Chanukah),
the spreading of the wellsprings outward,
one hastens the true and complete redemption,
and in the third Holy Temple one will kindle the Menorah every night or
(its mitzvah)
also every morning
[as is known *79 the two opinions of Rashi and the Rambam when the mitzvah of lighting the lamps of the Temple is –
the Rambam teaches that they kindled the Menorah twice a day, in the morning and between the evenings. According to the opinion of Rashi, the lighting of the lamps was once a day,
between the evenings. And this is not the place to elaborate on this].
And the prophecy will be fulfilled that the stick of Judah and the stick of Joseph will become "one stick" –
"And bring them close one to another for yourself into one stick".
The unity of all Jews together,
and "The king brought me into his chambers" in singular language
(not only "we will run",
as above in section 68),
as it is said "A great assembly shall return here",
where "assembly" means two concepts simultaneously:
There cannot be an assembly without a multitude of people,
and together with this "assembly" is singular language
(not assemblies)
and "great" is singular language.
That is, that all Jews are present,
and all stand together as one entity –
a "great assembly".
And (as it continues after "one stick") –
"And they shall become one in your hand",
and the Almighty continues "And I will make them into one nation",
In the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach and speedily in our days, literally.
In addition to the general lesson of Shabbat Chanukah,
there must also be a specific lesson from the specific determination of Shabbat Chanukah in this year. And the lesson must add to the lesson of the general days of Chanukah.
Shabbat Chanukah in this year occurs on the third light of Chanukah. The specific concept in this is expressed primarily in the Torah reading of this day:
On each day of Chanukah they read the offerings of the princes in the portion of Nasso,
and on the third day of Chanukah they read the prince of the children of Zevulun –
"On the third day, the prince of the children of Zevulun, Eliav the son of Chelon".
In what consists the novelty of
(the prince of)
the children of Zevulun
[as is known that each prince had his specific concept,
specific intentions etc.],
which are connected with the offering that the prince of Zevulun offered –
and especially that this comes after the reading about the offering of the prince of the children of Yissachar? –
It consists of the concept of master of good deeds. As is known that Yissachar is primarily connected with master of Torah,
and Zevulun with those engaged in business,
involvement in the world,
"All your deeds shall be for the sake of Heaven" and "In all your ways know Him",
and in general –
with good deeds
(good deeds).
And the prince of the children of Zebulun
(On the third day)
One reads after the first two princes which one reads the first two days of Chanukah:
On the first day –
Nachshon ben Aminadav of the tribe of Yehudah,
On the second day –
Nethanel ben Tzuar, prince of Yissachar,
And then on the third day comes the prince of the children of Zebulun. And the explanation of this order:
First and foremost comes the matter of self-sacrifice –
the concept of Nachshon ben Aminadav,
as a simple person understands simply:
When one asks him who is Nachshon ben Aminadav? He answers immediately:
The first who leaped into the sea –
self-sacrifice.
That self-sacrifice is a general service which penetrates all matters of service,
and from the aspect of self-sacrifice there is no difference which particular service he does:
Whether the study of Torah
(the concept of Yissachar),
Whether the fulfillment of the commandments
(the concept of Zebulun),
Whether to chop wood,
If we were commanded to chop wood,
etc.
Therefore,
in the order of the offerings of the princes, self-sacrifice comes first and foremost
(Nachshon ben Aminadav),
because this is the introduction and foundation to all matters of service.
Then one comes to particular service:
On the second day the prince of the tribe of Yissachar –
the concept of Torah;
דער ענין התורה;
And then on the third day the prince of the tribe of Zebulun –
the concept of the commandments.
The concept of Zebulun
(the reading of the third day of Chanukah) –
involvement in the world –
is particularly connected with the general concept of Chanukah:
It was stated above that the main concept of Chanukah is to illuminate the outside,
the world.
What is the difference between Chanukah and Purim:
Both are connected with "publicizing the miracle",
But the publicizing of the miracle of Purim is primarily in the synagogue,
and in the manner of "with a multitude of people, the King is glorified",
and in one's home,
i.e., in the interior
(not in the world).
And Purim in general is particularly connected with Torah –
Then was "they fulfilled what they had already accepted" at the giving of the Torah.
However, the publicizing of the miracle of Chanukah is primarily through the Chanukah lights which one kindles "at the entrance of his house on the outside" –
It should illuminate the street,
so that all the people in the street should see the lights and through this there will be publicizing of the miracle.
It follows that on Chanukah the activity in the world is primarily emphasized.
What is the special connection of the prince of the tribe of Zebulun
(the reading of the third day of Chanukah)
with Chanukah –
Because the main concept of the tribe of Zebulun is involvement in the world.
From this is understood the addition of the special instruction of the occurrence of Shabbat Chanukah in this year
(on the third day of Chanukah)
in the instruction of the totality of the days of Chanukah:
In the totality of the days of Chanukah, the service to illuminate the world with Chanukah lights is emphasized,
"a lamp is a commandment and Torah is light". And on the third day of Chanukah the instruction stands with even more emphasis –
Because then the reading in the Torah is about the tribe of Zebulun,
whose concept is primarily involvement in worldly matters
(and not so much the concept of Torah which pertains to the interior,
not in the world).
Then the virtue of the businessman is emphasized.
And particularly, on this third day of Chanukah one kindles three lights,
Because one kindles "corresponding to the days that are going out"
(as the Rema writes that "the simple custom" is that one should kindle each night in a manner of increasing and going),
Also corresponding to the first two days. Consequently, it follows that on the third day of Chanukah,
when the concept of Zebulun is emphasized
(involvement in the world),
one effects and illuminates also the previous two services
(which are emphasized in the first two lights) –
The service of self-sacrifice
(Nachshon ben Aminadav)
and the service of Torah
(Yissachar).
It is, however, not the explanation that Zebulun,
whose concept is involvement in the world,
is absorbed in the outside and in worldly matters,
But on the contrary:
Primarily he wants to study Torah,
Because he knows that his reward in the World to Come will not be in matters of commerce,
But that he will sit all day and study Torah. However, since he finds himself in a world where he needs to make a livelihood,
He is compelled to occupy himself with worldly matters and from this give charity. And because he has this feeling –
Therefore, every free moment that he has,
He utilizes it for studying Torah.
And as is emphasized in the general concept of Chanukah:
Although Chanukah primarily emphasizes illuminating the outside,
it does not mean that one goes out into the outside and lies there, G-d forbid,
but on the contrary:
One must illuminate the outside with "a candle of mitzvah and Torah light",
and especially with the oil of the Torah –
the inner dimension of the Torah,
which is found in the inner. One must take the light that is within the house and thereby illuminate the outside.
That is, that one lies –
in Torah,
but because there is an outside,
one must illuminate it with "a candle of mitzvah and Torah light". And on the contrary:
By virtue of the fact that he lies in Torah and there is his primary delight,
he has the power to also illuminate the outside with the Torah.
And as is also emphasized in that the service of Zevulun
(on the third day of Chanukah)
comes after the service of Yissachar on the second day,
that is, that after the service in matters of Torah
(which is emphasized on the second day),
one goes to perform the service in worldly matters of illuminating also the outside with the light of the Torah.
And thus the concept applies specifically to a simple person,
that his occupation with worldly matters is only out of necessity,
but his primary essence and his primary delight is in Torah,
because with him it is simple that in the World to Come his primary reward will be in Torah, not in matters of commerce.
Another might perhaps delude himself that his primary reward in the World to Come will be in matters of commerce:
Since "the reward of a mitzvah is a mitzvah",
to distinguish,
just as he in the time of exile "turned" and "turned" in commerce –
so his reward in the World to Come will be in that same matter
("from its reward we know its essence") –
in matters of turning in commerce!
In what is he now entirely immersed –
in matters of commerce. He needs to immediately know what is happening on "Wall Street",
what they turned there and what kind of business they conduct. And he turns and swindles,
until he twists not only another but also himself. Consequently he thinks that his reward in the World to Come will also be in turning.
And on the contrary:
Now,
however much he turns and twists,
indeed being entirely immersed in it –
this is nevertheless within measure and limitation
(because it is the time of exile);
(ווייל ס'איז זמן הגלות);
but in the World to Come the turning will be beyond measure and limitation,
and he will entirely twist his own head! –
This also exists now
(that he twists his head),
but within measure and limitation...
But a simple person does not understand all these calculations. He does not know of the interpretation of "the reward of a mitzvah is a mitzvah",
he does not know of the interpretation of the Tanya that "from its reward we know its essence";
ער ווייסט ניט פון פירוש התניא אז "משכרה נדע מהותה";
by a simple person of old,
and all the more so from before "old" –
it was simply laid out that he wants to have a son-in-law who is a Torah scholar,
all the more so if he himself can receive a new soul and will be able to sit and learn Torah!
It is only because he does not have the talents or the opportunities,
he himself could not sit and learn Torah all day,
but he was compelled to go make a livelihood and from it give charity;
נאר ער האט בהכרח געדארפט גיין מאכן א פרנסה און דערפון געבן צדקה;
but if only –
he hopes –
that he could sit all day long and learn Torah!...
Therefore he certainly has fixed times for Torah,
"as the law given to each and every one in the laws of Torah study etc."
(in the language of the Tanya),
at least one chapter in the morning and one chapter in the evening. And through this he fulfills the mitzvah of Torah study,
and "this book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth, and you shall meditate in it day and night",
until as Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai says in tractate Menachot "even if a person read only the Shema in the morning and evening, he has fulfilled 'shall not depart'".
Specifically Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai,
with whom "his Torah is his craft" –
which is not said about every Tanna –
says that through the fact that a Jew says "Shema in the morning and evening"
(according to his obligation)
he fulfills "this book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth" –
in the manner of the concept of "his Torah is his craft".
And the reason for this:
Because the Jew feels throughout the entire day that his occupation with matters of business is out of necessity,
but his primary delight is to be able to sit and learn Torah,
and at the time he says "Shema in the morning and evening" –
he completely tears himself away from the "hoo-ha" of the world –
it is considered for him as "this book of the Torah shall not depart from your mouth",
in the manner of "his Torah is his craft".
And since the main delight of Zevulun is in Torah
(not in the world) –
he has the power to illuminate the world with "a candle of commandment and the light of Torah,"
especially the inner dimension of Torah,
as mentioned above.
From this is understood the lesson of the third day of Chanukah when the matter of Chanukah is particularly emphasized –
to illuminate the outside with "a candle of commandment and the light of Torah":
Every Jew has within himself his external aspect and his internal aspect.
So too, in the collective of the Jewish people, there are those whose main focus is Zevulun,
masters of good deeds,
and those whose main focus is Yissachar,
masters of Torah. But also within Yissachar there is his Zevulun aspect,
as explained in the holy writings that even within a master of Torah there must be service in the world,
acts of kindness,
as he brings there the saying of our Sages, "Whoever says, 'I have only Torah,' does not even have Torah,"
rather one must say, "Torah and acts of kindness."
And when one stands on the third day of Chanukah,
when one reads in the Torah about the prince of the children of Zevulun,
then it is particularly emphasized
(in addition to the general emphasis of this during the days of Chanukah)
in every Jew the service of Zevulun –
involvement in worldly matters,
i.e., not as Torah is by itself in the "inner,"
but rather as one draws the light of Torah also into the external.
And may it be His will that through the service of a Jew in general during the days of Chanukah,
of lighting the Chanukah lights "at the entrance of his house from the outside,"
to illuminate the public domain,
"the mountains of separation,"
together with his request in prayer "for Your salvation we hope all day,"
and on the day of Shabbat –
"and may our eyes behold Your return to Zion" –
then one will actually transform the public domain,
and in the time of exile one will draw down "the Master of the world,"
as explained in Likkutei Torah that in "golah"
(exile) –
which is mentioned in the current haftarah –
one draws down the aleph of "the Master of the world,"
and through this it becomes "geulah" (redemption).
And then the prophecy is fulfilled that the one stick of Yehudah and the stick of Yosef will be united together –
"and bring them close, one to the other, to you as one stick, and they shall become one in your hand,"
speedily in our days, literally.
In the hadran that was discussed, the matter of concluding with something good in several contexts was explained
(the conclusion of the entire Shas,
the conclusion of the Gemara,
the conclusion of tractate Berakhot, etc.).
And it was discussed that in concluding with something good there are levels.
And based on this, the conclusion of Shas is understood
(the end of tractate Uktsin):
The Tosafot Yom Tov,
brought in the discourse beginning "This day is the beginning of Your works,"
explains that although –
Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta lived before Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi,
the Mishnah at the end of Uktsin precedes with the statement of Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi "The Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to bequeath to each and every righteous person three hundred and ten worlds, as it is said, 'To bequeath to those who love Me yesh' (which numerically equals three hundred and ten worlds) and I will fill their treasuries,"
(numerically equivalent to three hundred and ten worlds)
and only afterwards does the Mishnah bring the statement of Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta "The Holy One, blessed be He, found no vessel that holds blessing for Israel except peace, as it is said, 'Hashem will give strength to His people; Hashem will bless His people with peace'" –
in order to conclude with peace.
That is, there are levels in concluding with good:
Also "The Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to bequeath to each and every righteous person three hundred and ten worlds" is a conclusion with good. But since the matter of peace is an even higher level of good –
the Mishnah concludes with it.
And regarding this, we also see it at the conclusion of tractate Berakhot,
as was discussed then.
Continuing the matter, it was also discussed that also in the book of the Rambam we see that he concludes the books of the "Yad HaChazakah" with good:
Each book he concludes with a matter of ethics,
or an aggadah that draws a person's heart,
or the inner dimension of Torah in the manner of a hint
(and the like, as it will be called).
And so indeed we see in twelve books of the fourteen books of the Yad HaChazakah. But in two books there is seemingly no conclusion with good:
At the end of the Book of Women
(the end of the laws of Sotah)
the Rambam writes about the commandment of warning,
and he concludes:
"And anyone who is not particular with his wife and with his children and the members of his household and does not admonish them and oversee their ways constantly until he knows that they are free from all sin and iniquity, this one is a sinner, as it is said, 'And you shall know that your tent is at peace, and you shall visit your habitation and not sin.'"
We see that he seemingly concludes with a matter that is not good.
Regarding this, at the conclusion of the Book of Purity
(the end of the laws of Mikvaot)
the Rambam concludes:
"And I will sprinkle upon you pure water, and you shall be purified from all your impurities and from all your abominations I will purify you. May Hashem in His abundant mercies purify us from all sin, iniquity, and guilt. Amen."
We see also here that he seemingly concludes with a matter that is not good.
The question is further:
At the conclusion of the last Mishnah in Tractate Berachot it states:
"It is *115 a time to act for the Lord, they have made void Your Torah,
Rabbi Natan says: they have made void Your Torah because it is a time to act for the Lord."
The commentators ask: what does Rabbi Natan come to add to the Tanna Kamma? And they answer,
that he wants to conclude the Mishnah with a good thing,
not with the words "they have made void Your Torah"
(as the Tanna Kamma concludes),
but with "a time to act for the Lord."
According to this, the question on the Rambam becomes even stronger:
Since the Rambam, at the conclusion of the aforementioned books, brings a verse where a good thing is stated,
he should have concluded with the good thing in the verse:
At the conclusion of the Book of Women,
instead of writing "as it is said, 'And you shall know that your tent is at peace, and you shall visit your habitation and not sin'"
(which is ostensibly a conclusion with a thing not good),
he should have changed the order and written that "and you shall visit your habitation and not sin" is connected to "and you shall know that your tent is at peace."
In the manner of Rabbi Natan who changes the order of the verse in order to conclude with a good thing –
instead of writing "it is a time to act for the Lord, they have made void Your Torah",
he changes the order and writes "they have made void Your Torah because it is a time to act for the Lord"?
Further regarding the conclusion of the Book of Purities:
Instead of first bringing the verse and then writing "May the Lord in His abundant mercies purify us from all sin, iniquity, and guilt. Amen"
(a conclusion with a thing not good ostensibly),
the Rambam should have first written "May the Lord in His mercies etc.",
and then brought the verse that ends with "I will purify you",
it would have been a conclusion with a good thing. And especially since according to this, the Rambam would not have needed to change the order of the verse in order to conclude with a good thing
(as Rabbi Natan does in the Mishnah)?
Another thing must be understood:
In the Commentary on the Mishnah of the Rambam, he explains the matter of "it is a time to act for the Lord, they have made void Your Torah" from the Mishnah at the end of Berachot as follows:
"And afterwards he brought
(the Mishnah)
proof concerning all those who transgress those enactments, that a time will come to take retribution from them and to punish them, because they have made void the Torah,
and this is what he said
(Rabbi Natan)
'they have made void Your Torah, it is a time to act for the Lord,'
but one who
(the Tanna Kamma)
leaves the verse in its order and interprets it and says 'it is a time to act for the Lord, they have made void Your Torah' says that when the time comes to take retribution from them and to take vengeance, causes will be arranged for people to make void the Torah so that the punishment may come upon them in judgment."
It turns out that according to the Commentary on the Mishnah, the conclusion of the Mishnah
(also the words of Rabbi Natan)
is with a thing not good ostensibly?!
The explanation of the above is:
The aforementioned conclusion in the Book of Purities with "May the Lord in His abundant mercies purify us from all sin, iniquity, and guilt. Amen" is only in the Rome printing of the Rambam –
one of the first printings of the Rambam.
But in later printings,
and also in the printings before us,
the conclusion is not "purify us from all sin, iniquity, and guilt"
(and afterwards "Amen"),
but with the word "purify us":
"May the Lord in His abundant mercies from all sin, iniquity, and guilt purify us, Amen." And according to this, this is a conclusion with a good thing –
with the word "purify us."
And based on this,
according to the principle that they conclude with a good thing,
and in many printings of the Rambam indeed the conclusion is with a good thing
(with the word "purify us") –
it is possible to say that in the Rome printing, which concludes with "from all sin, iniquity, and guilt", there was a scribal error.
And further, and primarily –
and simply:
Concluding with a good thing itself can be in two ways: (a)
The conclusion is with a word
(a letter and the like)
that is good. (b)
The conclusion is with a good content
(even though the last word in itself may not be good).
Based on this, it is understood that both in the Book of Purities and in the Book of Women, the conclusion is with a good thing –
because in both places the Rambam concludes with a content that is good
(even though the last word in itself is ostensibly not good):
The content of the conclusion of the Book of Purities is,
that the Most High purifies Jews from "all sin, iniquity, and guilt." It is true that "all sin, iniquity, and guilt" are in themselves not good things –
but the content of the matter is that the Most High purifies from them.
The content of the conclusion of the Book of Women is,
that a Jew ensures that in his family there should be the matter of modesty,
which then is "your tent is at peace, and you shall visit your habitation and not sin." The actual conclusion is indeed with the word "sin",
which is in itself a matter not good,
but here it says "and not sin." So the content is a good matter.
In greater depth
(We have already spoken about this) –
And accordingly it will be understood that not only is the content of the conclusion about a good thing,
but also the last word is a matter of good
[And according to this explanation one will also understand how the conclusion of the Mishnah in Tractate Berachot is about a good thing according to the interpretation of the Rambam in his Commentary on the Mishnah]:
In purity itself there are several levels:
There is a level of purity that is a noun
(not a verb) –
a pure animal,
meaning not that it was once impure and became pure,
but that it is inherently pure.
Then there is a level where purity is a verb –
like the expression "I will purify you",
"He will purify us",
and so forth:
A thing that was previously impure has become pure. This is what is discussed in the conclusion of the Laws of Mikvaot –
that from an impure state one becomes pure.
In this itself there are several levels:
One becomes pure,
but the impurity that was there previously is not entirely erased.
Like "intentional sins become for him like unintentional ones". A higher level –
the impurity is entirely erased. Yet a higher level –
the impurity is transformed into purity.
Like "intentional sins become for him like merits"
(until actual merits).
And like we find in Tractate Chagigah several
(five)
levels of purity:
The purity required for non-sacred food. A higher level of purity –
for tithe,
higher still –
terumah
("One who immersed for tithe etc. is forbidden for terumah"),
higher still – sacred food
("One who immersed for terumah etc. is forbidden for sacred food"),
and the highest, fifth level
[Like "the fifth to Pharaoh"] –
for the sin-offering
("One who immersed for sacred food etc. is forbidden for the sin-offering").
And as the Mishnah further says regarding terumah and sacred food,
"Vessels finished in purity require immersion for sacred food but not for terumah",
because the purity required for sacred food is higher than the purity required for terumah.
And it is explained in Chassidus,
that "vessels finished in purity" are the aspect of completely righteous individuals,
but "they require immersion for sacred food",
which is the aspect of repentance,
for with them there is the elevation of "intentional sins become for him like merits",
purity in a manner that the impure thing is entirely transformed into purity. Therefore, "in the place where penitents stand, completely righteous individuals cannot stand".
Based on this one will understand the conclusion with good at the end of the Order of Taharot
(Laws of Mikvaot):
The matter that "May Hashem in His abundant mercies purify us from all sin, iniquity, and guilt, Amen" is the highest level of purity –
that one becomes entirely pure from "all sin, iniquity, and guilt",
and the impure thing itself is transformed into purity,
like "intentional sins –
"iniquity" –
become for him like merits"
(not only like unintentional ones).
Consequently, this is a conclusion not only about a good thing,
but about a good thing in the ultimate perfection:
A matter that is inherently good is like the aspect of completely righteous individuals,
who do not have the most sublime elevation of good that is achieved through the transformation of the opposite of good,
"intentional sins become for him like merits",
therefore "in the place where penitents stand, completely righteous individuals cannot stand". But when one concludes with a matter of purity from "all sin, iniquity, and guilt" and it is turned into merits –
this is an even higher good
(than inherent good),
the good of a penitent,
who has within him the elevation of "intentional sins become for him like merits",
therefore in his place completely righteous individuals cannot stand.
And accordingly, the two matters that the Rambam writes at the conclusion of this book are also understood
(the Order of Taharot),
and the order of the matters,
that first he brings the verse "And I will sprinkle upon you pure water and you will be purified from all your impurities and from all your abominations I will purify you" and then the conclusion "May Hashem in His abundant mercies purify us from all sin, iniquity, and guilt, Amen":
The verse itself speaks about a lower level of purity
(like "intentional sins become for him like unintentional ones" and so forth).
Then the Rambam adds and concludes with an even greater good
(good in perfection)
than what is stated in the verse,
or the Rambam thereby emphasizes that this is the interpretation of the verse
[As discussed above that in concluding with good itself there are levels] –
that "May Hashem in His abundant mercies purify us from all sin, iniquity, and guilt" –
purity like that of "intentional sins become for him like merits". And therefore he then adds "Amen",
because this indicates the potency of the level of purity.
According to this, it turns out that not only is the content of the conclusion good,
but also the words in the conclusion –
"All sin, iniquity, and guilt will He purify for us" –
are good,
and the ultimate good,
because this speaks
(not that "all sin, iniquity, and guilt" are, in and of themselves, Heaven forbid, but)
how they
(the intentional sins)
themselves become transformed into merits,
consequently, "all sin, iniquity, and guilt" in this context –
is the ultimate good,
actual "merits."
[This is also the explanation at the end of Seder Nashim:
"Anyone who is not exacting with his wife and his sons and the members of his household, and does not warn them and constantly oversee their ways until he knows that they are free from all sin and iniquity, this one is a sinner, as it is said, 'And you shall know that your tent is at peace, and you shall visit your habitation and not sin,'"
so the content and also the words are good and the ultimate good –
the concept of transformation,
that instead of "sin and iniquity" there is "your tent is at peace and you shall visit your habitation,"
and then "you shall not sin"].
Regarding what is explained in Likkutei Torah, Parshat Bechukotai, that "although according to the appearance, these words of rebuke
(in Parshat Bechukotai)
are curses,
but in truth they are only blessings,"
and he explains that the blessings within these curses are from the aspect of the hidden dimension of the Torah, etc.
And he brings on this that "these blessings are like that which is stated in the Gemara, in the first chapter of Moed Katan, page 9b, 'All of these are blessings,' etc.,
and this means that the blessing is from the aspect of the hidden...
'It appears according to its simple meaning because the blessing in this manner is from the aspect of the hidden.'" And the explanation of this:
The Gemara relates there in Moed Katan that someone sent his son to two Sages in order to receive a blessing from them. They said to him things which, on the surface, sounded like the opposite of blessings. When he returned to his father, he told his father that they had said to him things that were not proper:
"Not only did they not bless, but they even caused pain,"
his father asked him, "What did they say to you?"
the son told him what they had said to him. His father said to him, "All of them are blessings,"
and he explained to him that everything they had said to him was entirely blessings.
The question arises:
If their intention was blessings,
as the father explained to his son –
why did they not say it initially in explicit letters of blessing,
and they concealed it in other words?!
The rationale for this is:
They wanted to bless him with blessings from the most exalted place,
which, if the Accuser would know of it, he would not allow it. Therefore, they could not bless him with revealed blessings which the Accuser would recognize and interfere with,
rather, they had to clothe the blessings in other letters so that the Accuser would not understand them,
and he would let them pass,
and when the letters come down below, they become revealed blessings
(as his father explained to him).
There are those who want to have an explanation of this specifically according to the simple interpretation,
according to the revealed aspect of Torah,
even though the Gemara is part of Aggadah. There is an explanation of this from the commentators of the Talmud,
which does not contradict the aforementioned explanation:
The Sages saw above that the undesirable words that they said were destined to be fulfilled regarding the son, Heaven forbid.
They had two options regarding this:
They could wage war against it. Or a deeper way:
They would transform the words themselves into blessings. Therefore, they said the blessings in such words that they saw above that these words were destined to be fulfilled regarding the son,
but they said this with the preface that they were going to bless him
(they asked him, "What are you doing here?"
he answered them, "My father told me, 'Go to them so that they may bless you,'"
and upon this they blessed him with these words),
consequently, through this, they effected that the words themselves should be transformed into blessings for him.
This is analogous to the level of the Baalei Teshuvah relative to completely righteous individuals.
And this is also the explanation regarding our subject:
Through the fact that the "All sin, iniquity, and guilt will He purify for us"
(at the conclusion of Seder Taharot)
it turns out that the words "all sin, iniquity, and guilt" are, in their inner essence, the most exalted blessings –
because of the fact that they become transformed into merits,
intentional sins become for him like merits.
What also emerges from this is a practical halachic ramification:
When one betroths a woman on the condition that she has no transgressions,
if she subsequently repents
(out of love)
for the transgressions that she had,
she is betrothed,
because her transgressions have been uprooted from their very beginning
("his iniquity is uprooted from its very beginning"),
unlike in the case of healing, which is only "from now onward,"
therefore,
if the litigant comes and claims –
"Here there is an intentional sin which she previously committed" –
we tell him,
that through her repentance it has been uprooted from its very beginning,
and moreover:
this is not only not an intentional sin,
but on the contrary –
a merit,
because intentional sins become for her like merits!
Based on this, one will also understand the explanation of how the conclusion of the last Mishnah in Tractate Berachot is with something good –
according to the Rambam's interpretation in his Commentary on the Mishnah.
[In addition to this, there is a rule that if there is a discrepancy between the Rambam's Commentary on the Mishnah and his book Yad HaChazakah,
the halachah follows the later work,
i.e., the Yad HaChazakah. And since in the Yad HaChazakah the Rambam concludes all the books with good,
this determines his opinion on this matter regarding the Commentary on the Mishnah (even if one assumes that in the Commentary on the Mishnah he does not conclude with good).
Furthermore:
The Mishnah comes together with the Gemara,
in accordance with the principle "The Torah was given with its explanation,"
consequently, the conclusion of the tractate is not with the Mishnah,
but with the Gemara. Thus, even if one assumes that the Mishnah does not conclude with good
(according to the Rambam's interpretation in his Commentary on the Mishnah),
this is nevertheless not the conclusion of the tractate,
the conclusion is with the Gemara, and there it is a conclusion with good.
And furthermore, the main point:
According to the above explanation, it turns out that the Mishnah, according to the Rambam's interpretation, concludes with good]:
The inner essence of the concept of punishment according to the Torah is the great love of the Almighty for the one whom He punishes,
as explained by the parable for this in the holy writings "like the parable of a great and awesome king who, in his honor and himself, washes the filth of his only son out of his great love." And through this punishment, the undesirable matter is nullified,
until it is transformed into good and holiness.
This is in accordance with what was discussed above regarding the superiority of a penitent over a completely righteous person,
for whom "intentional sins become for him like merits."
And according to this, it turns out that also the conclusion of the Mishnah according to the Rambam's interpretation –
that "It is time to act for the sake of the L-rd" refers to the matter of punishments –
is a conclusion with something good,
and moreover –
the ultimate perfection of good.
This is also the lengthy explanation of the matter of the exile,
for seemingly "all the deadlines have passed" already in the time of the Gemara,
all the more so now –
why does the exile still continue?
Rather, this is in order to bring about an even higher level of good that comes specifically through the transformation of darkness into light,
intentional sins become for him like merits.
Consequently, a Jew must exert himself in his service during the time of exile, and through this he will bring our righteous Mashiach.
And to note from what the Munkatcher writes in connection with the coming of Mashiach –
and would that it were disseminated –
that one must be willing to sacrifice one's life so that our righteous Mashiach will come.
Someone
(from the Holy Land)
asked the Munkatcher for the source for this. The Munkatcher answers him –
in his usual language,
a language that is not subject to two interpretations,
but in clear letters,
not in "Amsterdam letters"
(in the language of his honor, my master, father-in-law, the Rebbe),
i.e., in clear letters so that one should not make a mistake as to what is meant to be said –
that for him
(the Munkatcher)
it is entirely a wonder that although that person
(the questioner)
is a "believer and understands,"
he asks such a question. "And my heart is very grieved if the great Torah scholars of the Holy Land, etc., need to explain the matter that one must be willing to sacrifice one's life for the coming of our righteous Mashiach,
And he explains with proofs for this that one must be willing to sacrifice one's life for the coming of our righteous Mashiach. He brings that in truth, one is obligated by law to sacrifice one's life only for the three well-known matters,
but nevertheless, he explains how one must be willing to sacrifice one's life also for the coming of Mashiach. And from what he writes, it emerges that the self-sacrifice for the coming of Mashiach is analogous to the self-sacrifice that one must have for the three matters!
And he says there also that specifically this –
self-sacrifice for the coming of Mashiach –
is "the war of the Zionists,"
this is the way to fight against the "Zionists"!
As explained in his response that is already printed from his holy handwriting
(and now printed anew),
and whoever wishes to acquire, let him come and acquire,
everyone who wants can receive it and look inside.
And from this we have a directive,
and especially for those who follow the method of Munkatch –
how one must be willing to sacrifice oneself for the coming of our righteous Mashiach.
And may it be His will that from the self-sacrifice for the coming of Mashiach,
which begins with the surrender of the will to this –
he only needs to will –
we will surely carry it out,
for there is nothing that stands before the will. And we will bring Mashiach in actuality.
And together with him we will then go to our holy land,
and leave behind the accounts in the bank,
the "car" and the magnificent houses and so forth.
The synagogues and study halls in the diaspora –
will be transferred to the land of Israel:
so too "their silver and their gold with them" that was earned in a kosher manner. But the other matters that were not earned in this manner will be left behind.
And we will come to the holy land,
"a good and spacious land",
including "the Lord your God will expand your border",
the completeness of the land,
together with the completeness of the people,
together with the completeness of the Torah.
That this
(the completeness of the people and the completeness of the Torah)
is especially connected with the coming of Mashiach –
as our Sages of blessed memory said on the verse "And as for Me, this is My covenant... they shall not cease from your mouth and from the mouth of your seed and from the mouth of your seed's seed, said the Lord, from now and forever",
that when one has three generations of Torah, "then the Torah will never cease from his seed forever",
"from here onward the Torah seeks its lodging place". And three generations is especially connected with the coming of Mashiach,
as our Sages of blessed memory said that the days of Mashiach are "three generations".
And we will have eternal life,
together with the eternal Holy Temple,
"the Sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established",
and there we will kindle the lamps of the Temple
(which is from the Torah)
and the Chanukah lights
(which are from the Rabbis),
"and everlasting joy upon their heads."
Discourse (in the form of a talk)
beginning with the words "The Rabbis taught: The Chanukah light, etc."
It is also customary to explain a verse from the weekly Torah portion with the commentary of Rashi,
and also a matter in the notes on the Zohar of our Torah portion.
So too it remains to explain the Rashi and note on the Zohar from the last Shabbat which was not explained then due to lack of time.
After the questions were asked last week,
I waited for someone to make an effort to answer them.
And it is not the case that I do not want someone to write an answer to me,
and that there is no other place to write it –
for in any case, booklets with notes are being printed,
and also this week booklets with several notes were printed,
and there is an "editorial board",
and all good things –
nevertheless, no one made an effort to write a note on this matter!
Since we spoke last Shabbat until a booklet was printed, six
five days have passed –
enough time to write a few lines and make an effort to answer something,
nevertheless, no one wrote a note about this in his name or not in his name,
with initials,
or even initials that have no connection to his name...!
If he is humble –
he also has no excuse why he wrote nothing at all,
for the advice has already been found that one can sign the note with initials that have no connection to his name!
In practice, however, no one tried to answer it...
A proper excuse,
not such a proper excuse,
not at all a proper excuse –
but at least tried to answer something,
And if there had been "I have toiled" then surely there would have been "and I have found",
for "I do not ask etc. except according to their ability":
From each one we demand according to his worth –
one comes with a kadke
(a barrel),
another with a keleshik
(as his honor, our master, my father-in-law, the Rebbe said)
. And especially since this is not about a deep Maharam Shif,
but about simpler matters,
at least one should have tried to answer something according to his worth,
My father, the one who speaks and speaks,
and speaks himself down,
and speaks himself out,
and tears out his heart and all the matters –
that it is not ears that do not hear,
but at least one person heard what was spoken...
[Missing].
At least Rashi is not guilty:
since it has become a good custom that one should speak a matter in Rashi and in the notes of the father on the Zohar,
and on the Sabbath day there is no matter of annulment of vows –
one must do it.
Regarding the dreams of Pharaoh in our portion, it is written that Joseph interpreted the repetition of the dream
(one dream with seven cows and the second dream with seven ears of grain):
"And as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it is because the matter is prepared
(ready)
from God, and God is hastening to do it."
According to this, a question arises in the plain meaning of the verse:
Joseph's dream in Parashat Vayeishev also consisted of two dreams,
and nevertheless Joseph's dream was not fulfilled until twenty-two years after the dream –
now how does this accord with what is written here that "the repeating of the dream" indicates that "God is hastening to do it"? And why does the verse in Parashat Vayeishev not explain the reason for the repetition of the dream?
As indeed all the commentators of the Scripture ask –
Ramban,
Rashbam,
Or HaChayim,
and others. And they answer that Pharaoh's dreams were in one night,
unlike Joseph's dreams,
with additional distinctions.
Nevertheless, Rashi does not comment on this at all,
although it is seemingly a question in the plain meaning of the Scripture?!
Thus it also remained to answer the questions in Rashi from last Shabbat:
We previously stood on the Rashi at the beginning of Parashat Vayeishev on "These are the generations of Jacob" –
"And another interpretation of 'Vayeishev':
Jacob sought to dwell in tranquility, the agitation of Joseph sprang upon him. The righteous seek to dwell in tranquility,
the Holy One, blessed be He, says: 'Is it not enough for the righteous what is prepared for them in the World to Come, that they seek to dwell in tranquility in this world?'"
And we asked about this:
Earlier it is written that Jacob says to the Most High "And You said, 'I will surely do good with you.'" And this speaks about "I will surely do good" in this world,
because it comes in Jacob's request "Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau" in this world
(and one cannot say it is because Jacob feared that sin might cause a deficiency in "I will surely do good",
because Jacob's statement "And You said, 'I will surely do good with you'" was after he feared that sin might cause [a deficiency]).
Consequently, according to this, it turns out that Jacob's request to dwell in tranquility is a justified request –
as the Most High Himself promised him –
now why did the Most High have a complaint about this: "Is it not enough for the righteous what is prepared for them in the World to Come, etc."?!
Furthermore:
Even if the Most High had a complaint against Jacob why he sought to dwell in tranquility –
it is sufficient that He did not fulfill his request,
but why did he also receive a punishment for this –
that "the agitation of Joseph sprang upon him",
a new trouble?!
And all these matters in Rashi must be understandable to a five-year-old student of Scripture based on what he previously learned,
or that the questions have no place in the plain meaning of the Scripture from the outset. And as will be explained below.
In the notes on the Zohar of our portion, he addresses what is written in the Zohar that "Rabbi Chiya opened and said, etc. And when the Holy One, blessed be He, created man, He placed the Torah before him and taught him through it to know its ways,
from where do we know this? For it is written, 'Then He saw it and declared it; He established it, and also searched it out.'"
And the father explains,
that Rabbi Chiya interprets the verse as referring to the Torah,
that in the Torah there are four levels,
and these are the four expressions "He saw",
"He declared it",
"He established it",
"and also searched it out",
as he explains it in the letters of Kabbalah.
He does not, however, explain the instruction and lesson from this in the service of man.
Thus it also remained to explain the lesson of the note on the Zohar of Parashat Vayeishev on page 190a –
also regarding Rabbi Chiya,
that he encountered several types of Torah scholars and he contemplated the level of each one and influenced each one so that he would be elevated to a level higher than his level previously.
And as will be explained below.
In the previous farbrengens, the proposal was also discussed that everyone
(also those who until now have not said it)
should say in his prayer:
In the introduction to prayer –
"I hereby accept upon myself the positive commandment of 'You shall love your fellow as yourself',"
And at the end of prayer –
"But the righteous will give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence."
And it was explained that this is a proposal appropriate to the current state of the world, that "kingdoms provoke each other,"
and especially since in recent times there is also being spread the opposite of love of Israel and peace and unity among Israel.
And to such an extent,
that there are such Jews who attempt in various ways to spread hatred and discord among Jews, may G-d forbid!...
They come with all kinds of claims against this one and that one, and they incite, etc.
If the intention behind the claims were to rectify the matter –
one would be able to recognize this in the manner of the claim:
not that he should incite and spread intentionally and willingly the opposite of love of Israel,
but rather speak in a manner
(in pleasant ways and in ways of peace, etc.)
through which he will possibly effect the rectification of the matter. And furthermore:
As we see with Aharon the Kohen,
that when he heard an unfavorable word about a Jew,
his way was not to incite with claims, G-d forbid,
but rather he said a praise about that person. And he conducted himself with love and pleasant ways and ways of peace,
until he effected the rectification of the matter.
In our case, however, we see that their speech is in a different manner. And from this, as it was in the past, one understands that their intention is not desirable,
but rather with this they only wish to spread hatred and discord in Israel, may G-d forbid...
Therefore, the advice for this is –
not to go and argue with them,
because they do not seek the truth and they do not seek any excuses:
they only seek difficulties. Consequently, it will not help to argue with them –
rather, the only advice that the Torah of truth promises will help is,
to increase in prayer and supplication to the Holy One, blessed be He.
And regarding this, concerning the general state of the world that "kingdoms provoke each other" –
the sure advice that will help for this is that one will increase in prayer and supplication to the Holy One, blessed be He,
for "behold, the Almighty is great and does not despise."
And in the prayer itself –
a matter that pertains to this situation:
In the introduction to prayer –
saying "I hereby accept upon myself the positive commandment of 'You shall love your fellow as yourself'" –
the matter of love of Israel,
the opposite of the absence of love among Jews,
and at the end of prayer –
"But the righteous will give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence" –
the opposite of "kingdoms provoke each other,"
and the opposite of the absence of unity and peace among Israel.
And then it will surely be fulfilled that one will sit in settlement
("they will dwell").
In tranquility.
And as was brought regarding this the example of "And Jacob settled –
Jacob sought to dwell in tranquility,"
because even though in Jacob's time his request was not fulfilled in its completeness,
nevertheless in this time it will surely be fulfilled,
because now there is no longer time to wait,
as the Gemara already says regarding the time of the Gemara "all the deadlines have passed,"
all the more so in this time. Consequently, there is no time to wait also for the fulfillment of the request "to dwell in tranquility" and it will now surely be fulfilled,
as the middle Rebbe writes in Shaarei Teshuvah
(and it was instructed to print this after his lifetime),
that after all the decrees and destructions upon Jews in the intermediate period,
"it will be no more,"
and one will sit in tranquility and calm even during the time of exile,
and immediately comes the true and complete redemption when there will be the completeness of tranquility and calm.
Here is also the place to explain why in the farbrengen it was explicitly specified to mention the phrase "kingdoms provoke each other" and not as the phrase stands in Bereishit Rabbah "kingdoms provoke one another."
When it was written down,
the phrase "kingdoms provoke one another" was brought. I said that they should seek the phrase "each other" –
they indeed found it in Midrash Lekach Tov. However, since they had written "one another" –
I said:
Let it remain as it was written.
One must understand, however, why they specifically chose to say the expression "this with this" from Midrash Lekach Tov,
and not "these with these" as it appears in Bereishit Rabbah?
This is because here it is specifically relevant that "kingdoms provoke one another" is in the singular form:
The main concept of "kingdoms provoking" that pertains to Jews
(and therefore the proposal came to add in the prayer)
is the "kingdoms provoking" of the two "superpowers" –
America and Russia –
this with this.
However, that which kingdoms provoke in other places in the world,
for example –
in South America,
this is not relevant
(directly)
to Jews. Therefore, here the expression "kingdoms provoke one another" in the singular form is more appropriate,
one "superpower" with the other "superpower."
Also in the "Middle East"
(as it is called)
there are kingdoms provoking that directly affect Jews –
in Lebanon,
specifically.
And this is also between the Land of Israel and Egypt. For although a paper was signed that there would be peace
(between Egypt and the Land of Israel) –
and may it be that there will be peace and that trouble will not arise twice –
they already gave to Egypt large territories,
the entire Sinai,
which has the oil fields,
and furthermore, and mainly –
this affects the security of the Land of Israel,
of two or three million Jews,
They wanted to give more,
only the nations did not want to take.
And now they want to give again more to the nations...
And may it be that the nations will continue not to want to take from the Jews!
One can at least now learn regarding the situation in Lebanon from the mistake that was made with Egypt
(by signing the "Camp David" agreement).
And as it is already now revealed to all,
the greatest mistake that was made by signing the unfortunate "Camp David" agreement.
Previously, people whispered about this,
but it is already a year and a half since a book was published in the Land of Israel where it is admitted that a mistake was made with the "Camp David" agreement. For thereby they gave away the entire Sinai,
with all the oil fields that are located there,
and brought the security of the Land of Israel into danger –
and what did they receive for it? Nothing more than a paper with a signature from the opposing side!...
And upon this they ordered banquets and wished each other "Mazel Tov"!
And as discussed at length many times,
that at the time when they were about to sign the "Camp David" agreement, it was a time when the President of the United States needed to have some paper and agreement on which the three signatures would be signed,
the signature of the Land of Israel,
the signature of Egypt,
and his signature
(of the U.S.),
so that he could go and show it for the elections
(which were at that same time).
And he did not care what was signed,
as long as he would have the signatures. Consequently, if the one from the Land of Israel had stood firmly and strongly that they would not give Sinai with the oil fields, etc. –
they would have signed the agreement anyway.
If he did not have the strength to withstand the pressure that was placed upon him,
he should have returned to the Land of Israel,
and they would have received him with great honor and with a "red carpet" and all the matters!
When it came to signing the agreement at "Camp David",
and they demanded of him that they give Sinai, etc. –
he then had three options:
One option –
to give in and sign,
A second option –
to stand with all his strength and not give in,
and he would have succeeded
(as above),
And a third option –
to return home and avoid all these troubles.
Nevertheless, he then did not have within himself the strength and he gave in and signed the unfortunate agreement,
whereby they gave away the entire Sinai with all the oil fields,
and placed the security of the Land of Israel in danger!
The claim that a promise was given to Egypt –
they also gave the residents of Yamit a promise that they would always be allowed to remain there!
Furthermore:
The entire promise that was given to Egypt is absolutely not applicable,
because it would endanger two or three million people in the Land of Israel!
For example:
If someone were to make an oath while holding a Torah scroll that he would harm, heaven forbid, a group of people –
no one would think to say,
even a non-Jewish "lawyer,"
even a child,
that the oath is binding and he must fulfill it, heaven forbid;
אז די שבועה איז חל און ער דארף זי אויספירן ח"ו;
such an oath to harm people is not binding from the outset!
The reason for the mistake of signing the "Camp David" accords stems from the fact that there are such Jews in the Land of Israel who are "pursuers of peace," and
(as discussed many times the explanation of this),
they drive away peace:
they have fallen before the non-Jew and before non-Jewishness,
and "what will the nations say,"
they have banded together and exert influence,
also on those who are above them,
that one should give in to the non-Jews in matters that even the non-Jews themselves do not want at all!
And as discussed many times,
that the same mistake has already been made several times –
and not by other people,
but by the same ones:
after the Six-Day War, Jews ran to give in to non-Jews in matters that even the non-Jews themselves did not want!
On account of this came the Yom Kippur War.
And on account of this even earlier,
as discussed many times.
And every time that one ran after non-Jews and gave in to them,
undesirable results manifested, heaven forbid!
And on account of this, with the "Camp David" accords, the same mistake was repeated.
And now, with the incident in Lebanon, the same mistake was repeated again:
There was the possibility to expel all the terrorists from Lebanon
(let them go to Algeria or to another place –
it does not matter where,
as long as it is away from a place where they can harm Jews),
and through this to protect the Land of Israel,
and there was also the agreement of the United States,
as discussed once that the president of the United States explicitly stated then that he was leaving the United States for a period of time,
consequently finishing the matter in Lebanon.
Nevertheless,
because of the falling before non-Jews and non-Jewishness,
there were then those who did not allow it to be completed,
and they remained near Beirut under the gunfire of the "P.L.O."!
ל.או."!
And because of this, the matter drags on to this very day,
and it has caused hundreds of innocent victims,
not only regarding Jewish victims,
but also innocent non-Jews –
children are being killed...
And it is not that the matter was not completed and they returned to the Land of Israel –
rather, the matter remains stuck in the middle:
neither are all the terrorists expelled from Lebanon,
nor do they leave Lebanon back to the Land of Israel and leave the terrorists there to remain;
און ניט מ'גייט אוועק פון לבנון צוריק אין ארץ ישראל און מ'לאזט די מחבלים דארטן בלייבן;
they are "hopping on two branches"! And it is known that "hopping on two branches" is the worst thing. As it was in the incident with Elijah the prophet:
it is better to give the Jews both choices,
not only the choice of "if the Lord is God, follow Him,"
but also the opposite choice,
because then at least there is the hope that they will repent.
However, with a "hopper on two branches," one cannot turn back,
because one does not know where he stands!
Here we are not speaking about the fact that they now exchanged thousands of non-Jews in order to obtain six Jews. This is merely a result of the fact that previously the matter was not completed properly. Had they completed everything from the outset,
this would not have come about. Because they did not complete it,
it caused all these undesirable matters that come out subsequently. Its beginning was voluntary and its end was forced:
in the beginning, they voluntarily did not completely finish expelling the terrorists –
now it is forced, causing all kinds of results...
And in addition, the Jews themselves brought the trouble upon themselves, that when the nations themselves killed other nations,
the Jews demanded from other Jews "justice and righteousness," and therefore a committee of inquiry was established to investigate which Jew is guilty!
Everyone knows that the nations actually committed the deed,
and one knows the names of those who did it –
they boast about it, that they performed a mitzvah of the avenger of blood. So if you are a judge who demands justice and righteousness and you want to blame Jews for the deed,
then at the very least also blame the nations who actually committed the deed! Their claim is indeed "like all the nations, the house of Judah,"
Jews are, heaven forbid, equal to the nations –
so if you blame Jews,
also blame the nations!...
Nevertheless, the subservience to the nations is so deep –
that because of "what will the nations say," one must show them that one conducts oneself according to justice and righteousness,
and one blames only Jews,
who did not do the deed at all,
and not the nations who actually committed it.
And so it continues further and further in the situation in Lebanon,
that Jews sit there,
and do nothing,
neither here nor there.
And one demands from Jews that they agree on several matters –
but now they do not even want to sign a paper
(as with Egypt),
only to agree orally,
whereby then anyone can say whatever he wants, etc.
Until that, may it be rebuilt and reestablished, now demands from the Land of Israel that one perform the same action that the nations did to other nations,
with the claim that now the times have changed. And one wants to drag Jews in so that they should be the "policeman,"
and afterward they will come to them shouting with complaints –
why they conducted themselves as a "policeman" must conduct himself...
And as mentioned above,
the reason for all these matters is:
those who are subservient to nations and gentility and in whom the "pride of Jacob" is lacking –
they are the ones who decide how one should conduct oneself in the Land of Israel,
and they also influence those who are above them.
And this was the reason for the mistake in the Six-Day War,
in the Yom Kippur War,
in the treaty of "Camp David,"
and also in Lebanon.
Why does one speak about this on Chanukah? Because the same thing happened on Chanukah,
from it there is a lesson also for now:
Also then, all the troubles began from the fact that there were Hellenists,
that is, Jews who indeed laid tefillin and the like,
but in them the "pride of Jacob" was lacking,
and they were subservient to the nations and wanted to imitate them, etc.;
און זיי זיינען געווען אַראפגעפאלן פאר גויים און האבן זיי געוואלט נאָכמאַכן כו';
they followed the method of "a Jew in your tent and a man when you go out."
It caused all the troubles that came out from it.
So it is also now:
those who decide how one should conduct oneself in the Land of Israel are subservient to nations and gentility,
and in them the "pride of Jacob" is lacking.
It can indeed be that they are captives taken as infants –
such was their education,
they do not know better;
ווייסן זיי ניט בעסער;
but the claim is –
why were they appointed as ministers and placed "at the head"?!
Why does one shout about this –
one knows that the shouting will accomplish nothing? One shouts because it hurts,
without any calculations of intellect as to whether the shouting will help!
When a cut is made in one's own finger –
one shouts! One does not think whether the shouting will help or not. Because his finger hurts,
he shouts.
When one asks him:
Do you know that your shouting will accomplish nothing? He says yes. He knows that when one makes a cut on the finger, one must do the known things. If it is a larger cut –
one must go to a doctor,
and one cannot heal it oneself. If so –
why do you shout? Because it hurts me!
Since there is such a situation in the world that kingdoms are provoking each other and this affects Jews –
one must therefore do something about it.
There are two ways regarding this:
One way,
that one should gather Jews and shout. But this is a doubt whether it will help.
A second way –
which the Torah of truth promises that it will certainly help –
that one should increase in prayer and supplication to the Holy One, blessed be He.
That this will bring out the general situation in the world,
and also regarding those who are in the land of Israel –
that He will cause a spirit from on high to be upon them,
and they will completely change.
Until, just as in the days of Chanukah there was the victory of the Hasmoneans,
even though previously there were the Hellenists –
so too now it will be in pleasant ways and in ways of peace,
Until it will be "But the righteous will give thanks to Your name; the upright will dwell in Your presence" –
ascending for the pilgrimage to the Holy Temple each month in its month and each Shabbat in its Shabbat,
"Every male among you shall appear before the Lord God,"
In the true and complete redemption,
there is no manner of "from now they are redeemed."
The explanation in Rashi at the beginning of the portion Vayeishev
("Jacob wished to settle in tranquility, etc."):
Even though the interpretation "Jacob wished to settle in tranquility, the agitation of Joseph sprang upon him, etc." is on the words "And Jacob settled,"
Rashi writes it in his commentary
(not on "And Jacob settled," but)
on the words "These are the generations of Jacob"
(in the verse that follows).
Because the matter of "And Jacob settled –
Jacob wished to settle in tranquility" and the claim of the Holy One, blessed be He, about this
("Is it not enough for the righteous, etc.,"
and therefore "the agitation of Joseph sprang upon him")
was connected specifically with "These are the generations of Jacob: Joseph, seventeen years old, etc.,"
only then was the claim of the Holy One, blessed be He, upon Jacob's request to settle in tranquility.
And the explanation of this:
Until Joseph became seventeen years old, Jacob indeed sat in tranquility for a duration of nine years or eleven years
(according to the simple explanation):
After Joseph was born
(at the end of fourteen years that Jacob "served for a wife" in the house of Laban)
Jacob remained another six years with Laban
("Six years for your flock").
And afterwards he was two years on the road
("A year and a half in Succot and six months in Bethel").
Afterwards he arrived in the land of Canaan,
and there was "And Jacob settled" until "Joseph, seventeen years old" at his sale.
It turns out that Jacob sat in tranquility nine years,
or eleven years if one also counts the two years on the road
(when he was not in the house of Laban) –
from the eighth year after the birth of Joseph
(six years with Laban,
two years on the road)
until he became seventeen years old
(when he was sold and the tranquility of Jacob was destroyed).
Accordingly, it is understood that the promise of the Holy One, blessed be He, to Jacob "I will surely do good with you" was indeed fulfilled in this world –
because Jacob sat in tranquility for several years.
This was, however, all until Joseph grew up. But when he became seventeen years old,
and "And Jacob settled –
Jacob wished to settle in tranquility" –
the Almighty had a great claim about this:
When Joseph was born, Jacob said to Laban "Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my land,"
and Rashi explains:
"When Rachel gave birth to Joseph –
from when the adversary of Esau was born, as it is said 'And the house of Jacob shall be a fire and the house of Joseph a flame and the house of Esau straw,'
fire without a flame does not dominate at a distance. When Joseph was born, Jacob trusted in the Holy One, blessed be He, and wished to return,"
because then
(from when Joseph was born)
he knows that he will be able to overcome Esau.
Further it is stated that when Jacob met Esau, he said to him "My lord knows that the children are tender, etc. Let my lord please pass before his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the livestock that is before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord, to Seir."
All this was,
when Joseph was still tender. Consequently, Jacob could not yet contend with Esau,
because he needs to come to "Joseph, a flame"
(and "fire without a flame does not dominate at a distance");
(און "אש בלא להבה אינו שולט למרחוק");
But when Joseph grew up and became seventeen years old,
and then "all that he learned
(Jacob)
from Shem and Ever he transmitted to him,"
he gave him his Torah and all his matters,
consequently "Joseph, a flame" was then already prepared to help Jacob contend with Esau and to refine him,
as Jacob had promised that he would do.
Nevertheless, Jacob then did not go to contend with Esau. And on the contrary:
"Jacob wished to settle in tranquility" –
Has the Almighty now come with a complaint:
Granted, until now Joseph
("flame")
was young,
consequently you could not go to clarify Esau,
but now Joseph has already grown up etc. –
so what does it mean that you do not go to clarify Esau,
and instead of this,
you ask for "to dwell in tranquility."
Therefore Jacob received a punishment measure for measure:
Just as he did not go with "Joseph flame" to engage with Esau
(but rather sought to dwell in tranquility) –
his punishment was that "the anger of Joseph leaped upon him."
And based on this, all the precise points are understood.
The explanation in the matter of the repetition of the dream:
The difference between the two dreams of Joseph and the two dreams of Pharaoh –
a five-year-old student of Scripture understands on his own. Therefore Rashi does not need to explain why Joseph's dream was not fulfilled in the manner of "God hastens to do it" even though he had two dreams:
By Pharaoh, both dreams were with the same content
(although with two separate parables –
one dream with cows and one with stalks).
And also
(the interpretation and)
the fulfillment of the dreams was in the same matter –
"Pharaoh's dream is one" –
the seven years of plenty
(corresponding to which are the seven good cows,
and the seven good stalks),
and the seven years of famine
(corresponding to which are the seven lean cows and the seven thin stalks).
However, the two dreams of Joseph contain many changes,
and also the fulfillment of the dreams was in two separate times:
(a) In the first dream Joseph speaks about "we were binding sheaves in the middle of the field."
However, in the second dream it speaks about "the sun and the moon and eleven stars" in the heavens.
That is, in two completely separate places –
the first dream in the field,
and the second in the heavens.
(b) In the first dream it speaks about Joseph's brothers and Joseph.
However, in the second dream it also speaks about Jacob and Bilhah
("the sun and the moon"),
not only about "eleven stars" corresponding to the tribes.
(c) In the fulfillment of the dreams, the two dreams were fulfilled at different times:
The first dream was fulfilled when Joseph's brothers bowed to him when they came to ask for grain
("binding sheaves in the middle of the field...
your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to my sheaf",
that is, their bowing was connected with the field –
grain).
However, the second dream was fulfilled when they bowed to Joseph in his house,
in the king's palace
(corresponding to sun and moon and stars in the heavens).
Based on this, it is simply understood that Joseph's two dreams were not in the manner of the repetition of the dream as with Pharaoh's dreams. Therefore there is no question from the outset why they were not fulfilled immediately
("God hastens to do it")
and the verse does not need to interpret this.
The lesson from what is explained in connection with Rabbi Chiya in the Zohar and in the notes on this –
in our portion and in Parshat Vayeishev:
When one encounters Torah scholars,
one must contemplate each one of them individually,
and then endeavor to help each one according to his level,
that he should be elevated to a higher level –
as we learn from the conduct of Rabbi Chiya as related in the Zohar in Parshat Vayeishev.
Since He looked into the Torah and created the world –
there must be individual contemplation of each of the Torah scholars
(whom one encounters)
before engaging in individual contemplation of the Torah itself,
in the four levels within the Torah,
and from this one derives how to contemplate individually the level of the Torah scholars,
and effect in them an elevation –
as we learn from the statement of Rabbi Chiya in the Zohar in our portion.
And one could elaborate on this,
but this is not the place.
In connection with the proposal regarding saying in prayer "I hereby accept upon myself etc." and "But the righteous etc." –
fortunate is the portion of those who endeavored to publicize this and to print it in the newspaper
(without an arousal from me),
in two places in the newspaper –
one place in brief,
together with a section where these two matters in prayer are written that each person can cut out and insert into his siddur,
and in the second place –
more at length.
And it shall be, then, through the general aspect of the matter of Torah and commandments and the dissemination of Judaism,
and particularly in the matters of love of Israel and unity of Israel,
and especially –
through the utterance of these two matters in prayer –
one will hasten even more the coming of Mashiach our righteousness, speedily in our days, literally.
In order to participate in the aforementioned –
one will now give a beverage from the farbrengen to those who wrote this and endeavored to print it in the newspaper,
and with the beverage one should make a farbrengen on "this Chanukah",
and there speak about the good resolutions that were accepted at the farbrengen of the 19th of Kislev,
and the 20th of Kislev,
and the Shabbat
(Parshat Miketz) –
which comes in sequence to the 19th-20th of Kislev,
and in a manner that "a man shall help his fellow",
through which, by the help of his fellow, it becomes for him like a "long arm" with which he can reach further than he could on his own.
And in addition to this, there is also the help of the hand of the Holy One, blessed be He –
"and Your right hand is outstretched to receive the penitent",
until the Almighty takes out from exile every Jew by the hand,
"and the Lord your God will return your captivity"
("and Your right hand is outstretched to receive the penitent") –
"it does not say 'and He will bring back,' but rather 'and He will return,' teaching that the Holy One, blessed be He, returns with them from among the exiles."
And in a manner of "immediately they are redeemed."
His Holy Honor, our Master, our Teacher, and our Rebbe, may he live for many good days, gave a toast to R. D.R., may he live, and to R. G.Sh.D.B., Y., may he live,
and gave the bottle of beverage to the aforementioned R. G.Sh.D.B.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make an after-blessing,
should surely make an after-blessing.
After the evening prayer
(which came immediately after the afternoon prayer)
and the lighting of the Chanukah candles and Havdalah,
His Holy Honor, our Master, our Teacher, and our Rebbe, may he live for many good days, began to sing "He will build the Holy Temple, etc."
(Completion for Shabbat Parshat Miketz)
Afterwards one sits down in front of a mirror and asks oneself –
"Why is this for me?..."
And one considers –
"If it does not help, it will not harm..."
Since one does not hear anyway what is being said,
if one will not speak, it will harm no one. And on the contrary:
Surely each one will find good things to do.
Why must one sit and torment the community for three hours,
two and a half hours,
three and a half hours?!...
This coming Shabbat there will not be a farbrengen in any case,
in two weeks' time, as usual, there will also not be a farbrengen –
consequently, it blocks all these matters
(because one will not speak anyway,
and one will not hear);
און מ'וועט ניט הערן);
and further, the Almighty will already help.
(Shabbat Mevarchim)
Then there is no choice and one must hold a gathering due to the enactment of His Holy Honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe
[and in the meantime there may be another reason why one will need to hold a gathering] –
does one also wish to cause this...
His Holy Honor, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and his father, the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab)
of blessed memory, were once in Italy,
which at that time was such a country. And there they saw a wonder:
a "locomotive"
a "paravoz")
to which carriages are attached,
and by the fact that the "locomotive" runs, it also pulls the carriages that are attached to it.
Since from every thing one must learn a matter in divine service,
the Rebbe, of blessed memory, learned from this that there is an entity which is essentially different and a separate thing from the rest of the matters,
only when one attaches them, it pulls them along:
the "locomotive" is essentially a separate thing,
the carriages are a separate thing, and Italy is a separate thing,
only when one attaches them, the "locomotive" also pulls the carriages, etc.
And so in our case:
Since one does not hear anyway what is being said, the "locomotive" can sit by itself in a room and whistle,
and the "carriages" should sit by themselves and turn and do their own thing...
Why must one trouble the community to come and sit at a gathering and torment them –
when they do not hear anyway what is being said;
בשעת זיי הערן סיי-ווי ניט וואס מ'רעדט;
there are no recipients...
Surely he thinks, while he sits at the farbrengen, good thoughts about love of God,
fear of God, etc. –
he can do this by himself,
why must one torment him to sit at the farbrengen?!
Even if an enemy hears a word –
the word is adorned,
and the word adorns him,
and he says "kaput u'ferach",
a beautiful word –
as it is stated in the Midrash
(Bereishit Rabbah 91:10)
that "when a person would say a well-composed thing before Rabbi Tarfon, he would say 'kaput u'ferach'" –
and then one goes to sleep!
One is not speaking of Kabbalah,
secrets of secrets of the Torah,
one is speaking of matters in letters that everyone can understand –
nevertheless...
So why must one hold a farbrengen and thereby trouble the people,
and that one even has a complaint:
Why must he come to the farbrengen and for what? To hear how he is being scolded,
and especially on Shabbat Chanukah... –
it is better that each one should sit by himself on the day of Shabbat and open a Likkutei Torah,
a Chassidic discourse and the like.
Out of rest of the soul and rest of the body,
comfortably,
when he wants and where he wants,
and drink with it a glass of tea or chicory
(as one used to drink in the past)
or coffee,
with sugar or without sugar. Or drink compote
(if he is after the meal)!
Let each one sit down before a mirror,
for the mirror is the best mussar book...
There is no lack of what to learn:
In the past when one found a manuscript,
a discourse and the like,
this was a rare find;
איז דאס געווען א יקר המציאות;
today everything is printed,
and everyone can learn from it.
One finds a new manuscript, one sends it immediately there,
and one must edit it,
and it is not appropriate to say –
one must immediately print it and publicize it etc.!
Indeed, everything is printed:
from the Alter Rebbe,
from the Mitteler Rebbe,
from the Tzemach Tzedek,
from the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Rashab) of blessed memory,
from the Rebbe Maharash,
from the Rebbe the father-in-law. There is no lack of what to learn...
One can better sit and learn by oneself in tranquility,
rather than come to a farbrengen and trouble oneself and hear how one is scolded.
And especially since one does not even hear the words themselves...
