English translation 1
First of all, this is a farbrengen connected with Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev,
First of all, this is a farbrengen connected with Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev,
as instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe1, and as it appears,
this was also the practice beforehand among select individuals,
but my father-in-law, the Rebbe, publicized it to the many –
that one should make a gathering on Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh.
That is, in addition to that which one gathers together and makes a congregation of oneself,
as is known the story that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, told2 about his grandfather
(the son of the Tzemach Tzedek),
after whom my father-in-law, the Rebbe, was named –
one must on Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh also gather a congregation literally
(of many Jews)
by making a farbrengen.
When a congregation of Jews gathers together at a farbrengen,
it is a time of favor, and the merit and power of the congregation gives each Jew more power at that time to accomplish than at other times3. One has then more power to know which good resolutions one must accept. And also –
more power to bring the resolutions into actuality with ease and alacrity.
That a Jew can bring his good resolutions into actuality –
what is the question,
because "He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him"4. When a Jew resolves to do a good thing,
the Almighty helps him to fulfill it in actuality,
but this itself can be in several ways:
with alacrity,
with ease, and so forth;
בקלות וכיו"ב;
but when Shabbat Mevarchim comes and one makes a farbrengen of many Jews,
the power and merit of the congregation helps that the bringing into actuality of the good resolutions should be in the easiest manner and with the greatest alacrity.
And as it is written5 "Behold, God is mighty and does not despise",
but here one need not come to "does not despise",
because it speaks of Jews who are presumed to be kosher6,
"and Your people are all righteous"7.
The above regarding the power and merit of the congregation,
is the advantage of the farbrengen in all times. Additionally, there is a further elevation when the farbrengen takes place on the day of Shabbat
(Shabbat Mevarchim).
The very day of Shabbat is blessed. As it is stated in the Written Torah8
(that even the Sadducees admit to this,
and certainly the most insignificant of the insignificant)
"And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it". And additionally, Shabbat also blesses the days that follow it –
from it are blessed all the days9. From this it is understood that Shabbat is higher than the days that follow it,
which is why it has the power to bless them.
From this it is understood that on the day of Shabbat it is a special time of favor to accept good resolutions for the coming days,
since Shabbat blesses and gives power to the coming days.
And especially after Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh,
which has an even higher elevation than an ordinary Shabbat. Because not only does it bless the days of the coming week
(as on every Shabbat),
but all the days of an entire month,
therefore it is understood that this Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh contains within itself more power and blessing, being capable of blessing so many days of an entire month.
Furthermore:
The concept of month
(and thus Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh)
is not a division of time that is comparable and within the category of the time
(month)
before and after, etc., only with changes in the same value and category, but rather
(as explained in Chassidic discourses,
also in the discourses of "Mechar Chodesh"10) –
"Chodesh" is from the term renewal,
then a new concept in time begins that did not exist in the time before.
From this is understood the greatness of the elevation of Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh,
which blesses and gives power
(therefore it shows that this Shabbat Mevarchim is higher)
to all the days of the month.
So it is regarding every month and every Shabbat Mevarchim HaChodesh. In this itself, there is a further elevation in the month of Kislev and Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev relative to the other months:
The month of Kislev contains within it special and lofty days which are not found in any other month. And in the order of the days of the month:
the tenth of Kislev,
the nineteenth of Kislev,
until the end of the month –
the days of Chanukah.
And as explained in the Midrash11 that the work of the Mishkan that Moshe made was completed in the month of Kislev,
and for a reason it was erected only in the month of Nissan. "And from then Kislev lost out, for the work was completed in it. The Holy One, blessed be He, said: Upon Me to repay,
with what did the Holy One, blessed be He, repay him,
the Chanukah of the Chashmonaim"
(the concept of the days of Chanukah which begin on the twenty-fifth of Kislev).
One sees from this the superiority of the month of Kislev,
that in addition to the completion of the work of the Mishkan –
which the Mishkan had within it the superiority that it was the work of Moshe's hands, which are eternal
(not like the First and Second Temple) –
was in this month
(only due to a reason was its erection postponed until later),
in the month of Kislev
(the days of Chanukah)
there was also the "completion" of the First Sanctuary –
the Mishkan,
which is also called a Sanctuary,
as it is written12 "And they shall make Me a Sanctuary." And it is the First Sanctuary –
"completion",
not only completion,
but also from the term perfection.
And the entire superiority in the month of Kislev is blessed from the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev. Thus, from this one understands the greatness of the superiority of this Shabbat of blessing,
even relative to other Shabbats of blessing the month,
that it has the power to bless such a month as Kislev, in which the work of the Mishkan was completed and then there was the "completion",
also from the term perfection,
of the Mishkan.
From all this it follows that when standing on the Shabbat of blessing, the Shabbat of the month of Kislev,
which blesses the entire month of Kislev,
one has special and lofty powers to accomplish all matters.
And the main intention of all these lofty powers that are on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev –
is in order to utilize them and bring them down into actual deed,
because the deed is the main thing.
And this matter is accomplished especially through making a gathering then. As is known the "note that came down from heaven" that the Alter Rebbe said13,
that a gathering of Jews can accomplish more than what Michael the High Priest14,
the great prince15,
accomplishes. And especially since the gathering takes place on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev,
with all the aforementioned superiorities that are in it.
One has, in a gathering on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev, special and lofty powers –
to accept good resolutions in all matters,
and the main thing –
to bring down all good resolutions into actual deed,
because the deed is the main thing16.
From that which is said that the deed is the main thing,
it is understood that there are other matters in Torah and mitzvos which are not so main,
and matters which are more main, etc.
And among them all,
even the main matters in Torah,
the deed is the main thing –
deed is the main thing of the main. And on the contrary:
The more main the matter about which it speaks –
the more emphasis must be there that it be brought down into actual deed,
being the main thing of all main things.
So too regarding the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev:
Since this is a main matter as above,
there it is even more relevant that it be utilized for actual deed,
being the main thing of all main things.
And since one demands of a Jew that he utilize the time of favor of the gathering on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev to accept good resolutions with the intent to bring them down into actual deed –
it is a certain thing that one gives him the powers to accomplish this,
as we have the principle that "I do not ask except according to their power"17,
and moreover –
"Who has preceded Me that I should pay"18:
Before one demands a matter from him,
one gives him from the outset the powers to carry it out.
And to carry it out in perfection,
until the ultimate perfection,
in accordance with how the Supreme One wants that His will be fulfilled,
as the Rambam rules19,
and also brought in Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah20,
that the service of Hashem must be in the manner of "all the fat is for Hashem"21,
"from the finest, most excellent, etc."
Including also that one perform the service with joy and a good heart. In addition to it being a necessity that the service of Hashem be with joy and a good heart,
it also contributes to the actual perfection of the service,
as is seen tangibly.
And having all these powers from Above,
a Jew must utilize them and bring them out from potential to actual.
The question arises:
If one gives him all these powers from Above –
then where does one leave room for the choice of the person,
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said22 "All is in the hands of heaven except the fear of heaven"?
The answer is:
Although indeed one does not interfere with the person's actual choice –
one gives him powers, however, to help him out, so that it should be easier for him to do his service.
As explained in Chassidus23 regarding the concept of "Who will give that their heart be this for them to fear Me etc."24. The simple explanation of the verse is –
"Who will give that their heart be this etc." in the form of a question,
so who can accomplish this,
because "everything is in the hands of heaven except the fear of heaven",
and this was given to the free choice of a Jew25. But Chassidus explains it according to the inner aspect of matters,
that there is the level of "Mi" which exists in every Jew. Because every Jew has within himself all levels,
"He placed the world in their heart"26 –
and the level of "Mi" in the Jew gives the power that there should be "their heart this for them to fear etc."
The aspect of "Mi" is indeed not revealed in the person,
therefore it is also in the form of a question. But the very fact that one asks a question
("Who will give")
indicates a connection to the matter,
because a matter that is entirely beyond the realm of connection,
is not even within the realm of question. And a Jew only needs to connect,
through his free choice,
his revealed powers with the aspect of "Mi"
(which is not revealed),
and then "Who will give that their heart be this for them to fear Me etc." is fulfilled,
that the "Mi" gives him power so that he should have fear etc.
From this it is understood,
that it is not the explanation that the aspect of "Mi" negates the matter of free choice,
rather, from the aspect of the nature of the Good to do good, He has all the advantages of the perfection of good:
both the advantage that comes through his free choice,
where then the service is not in the manner of "bread of shame"27,
and also the advantage that in the service
(through his free choice)
he is given powers from the aspect of "Mi" so that he can accomplish it:
"Who will give that their heart be this for them to fear Me" –
it is "their heart this for them",
the service of a Jew
(through his free choice),
meaning, that in his revealed powers he has the choice to draw down and reveal through his service the aspect of "Mi" within him,
and together with this he has the power in his service from the aspect of "Mi" within him
(which is not revealed).
The scholars of the revealed aspect of Torah will immediately raise a commotion about this –
is it not seemingly a contradiction to say that he has free choice and together with this he is given power to do his service?
It is explicitly stated in the Rambam –
who is accepted even by the scholars of the revealed aspect of Torah as a final decisor:
The Rambam writes28 that every person is born with natural inclinations towards this line or towards the other line
[Jews are born with a nature and inclination towards good,
as it is stated29 that Jews are by nature bestowers of kindness,
bashful and compassionate,
the acronym of "Gever" (as it is stated in the books)];
ר"ת "גבר" (ווי עס שטייט אין ספרים)];
nevertheless,
the Rambam continues,
every person has the free choice to choose how to conduct himself in actual practice and no one compels him in this –
"authority is given to every person if he wishes to incline himself to the good path etc."30.
Thus we have the explanation according to the revealed aspect of Torah
(in the Rambam)
and according to Chassidus
(as above)
how a Jew has both things:
free choice to conduct himself as he wishes,
and the powers that help him to conduct himself in a good manner,
but it depends on his will and free choice to utilize these powers in actual practice.
However, the main thing is not the explanation,
rather, the deed is the main thing –
that standing on Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev one should utilize in actual practice the sublime powers that one has,
to undertake good resolutions and bring them down into actual deed.
May it be His will that it should be so in actual reality.
Additionally, we have the lesson from the fact that Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev occurs this year on Shabbat Parshat Toldot:
There are two portions in the Torah that could have been called by the name "Toldot" –
Parshat Noach,
which begins with "These are the generations of Noach" and our portion –
"These are the generations of Yitzchak",
nevertheless, specifically our portion is named "Toldot",
as was discussed previously31 the novelty and reason for this.
From this it is understood that the primary lesson of our portion specifically is that there must be "Toldot". The lesson in our matter:
The aforementioned matter connected with the sublime day of Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev,
which blesses the sublime month of Kislev,
which gives special powers to perform all matters of service –
must be not only regarding oneself,
but in a manner of "Toldot",
that one conducts himself in a manner of "lamps to illuminate",
spreading moisture so that it will cause moisture to spread further,
and one creates "Toldot" who also conduct themselves in such a manner.
In addition to the explanation of the Midrash32 on "Toldos,"
that "the offspring of the righteous –
are good deeds,"
there is in this the simple explanation –
as we speak here how every matter must be according to its simple meaning –
that one makes "offspring" in their simple sense,
[meaning] additional Jews who conduct themselves in the manner that he conducts himself,
from whom they will see and so do.
And in addition to this, it is said here that it is "the offspring of Yitzchak,"
not "the offspring of Noach":
"Noach" is connected with "rest for the supernal ones, rest for the lower ones."33
That is, a matter of satisfaction.
But nevertheless, the matter of satisfaction
("Noach")
does not reach the matter of "Yitzchak,"
laughter and rejoicing
(from the term "God has made laughter for me"34),
all the more so not to "then our mouth will be filled with laughter."35
As we see it below, in that which is "man is called after the supernal pattern":36
When among people there is laughter and rejoicing, this is a greater joy than satisfaction,
therefore not every satisfaction expresses itself in laughter and rejoicing.
And this laughter and rejoicing is not in a hidden manner and one smiles to oneself etc.,
rather it is revealed in the world, in the sight of all,
as the language of the verse34 in connection with the name Yitzchak: "everyone who hears will laugh for me,"
that is, that everyone hears about it,
"everyone who hears,"
and this brings out in them laughter and rejoicing.
And in the service of man in our context:
That the service of "offspring,"
"candles to illuminate,"
that one should bring it about that also others conduct themselves in the aforementioned manner,
is with joy,
not only satisfaction
("the offspring of Noach"),
but rather laughter and rejoicing
("the offspring of Yitzchak"),
and revealed to all –
"everyone who hears will laugh for me."
And the service in the manner of "the offspring of Yitzchak,"
laughter and rejoicing,
becomes the immediate preparation for "then our mouth will be filled with laughter,"37
in the true and complete redemption,
which
(the future redemption)
is connected specifically with Yitzchak,
as it is written:38 "Abraham does not know us and Israel does not recognize us," and specifically regarding Yitzchak it will be said "for You are our Father,"
as explained in the discourses.39
But,
as mentioned,
the main point here is not homiletic interpretation,
hint, secret, and law,
or even the simple meaning as it is in Torah –
rather the simple meaning in actual deed –
below ten handbreadths in this physical and material world.
And speedily, in our actual times.
In addition to the aforementioned special and new points which exist on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev in the fixed calendar of this year –
there are also the constant and shared matters which always exist on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev
(in every year),
and there is a rule40 that "a frequent [matter] and an infrequent [matter] –
the frequent takes precedence."
The first constant matter in every month of Kislev
(and consequently in every Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev)
is –
איז –
the days of Chanukah which always begin in the month of Kislev. And this has precedence in time over Yud-Tes Kislev and all the more so over Yud Kislev,
because the miracle of Chanukah occurred before the other two matters.
It was said earlier
(approximately)
(ס"ב)
that one of the innovations of Chanukah
(in the month of Kislev) is,
that this is the "completion" for the Mishkan of Moshe which was finished in the month of Kislev,
only that for a reason its erection was later,
therefore the Omnipresent later "paid back" the month of Kislev with that which then was the dedication of the altar through the miracle of Chanukah.
It follows that in the month of Kislev the superiority of the Mishkan of Moshe is emphasized,
because then was the "completion for the Mishkan."
Explanation of the superiority of the Mishkan of Moshe:
In addition to that which there is the general matter in all the Mishkans and Temples,
that they are "the Sanctuary, Hashem, Your hands established,"41
and within them is the indwelling of the Divine Presence etc.,
there is also a special superiority in each one of them –
one has that which the other does not,
because each one had its particular matter and function:
There is a special superiority in the First Temple built by Shlomo over the other Temples. There is a special superiority in the Second Temple over the First Temple –
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said42 on the verse43 "Great shall be the glory of this latter house more than the former." And there will be a superiority in the Third Temple over the previous Temples –
according to the second interpretation44 in "Great shall be the glory of this latter house more than the former,"
that "this latter house" refers to the Third Temple.
So too it is understood regarding the Mishkan of Moshe, that it has in itself a special superiority over the other Temples
(in addition to the general matter in this):
The building of the Mishkan was immediately after and in continuation of the Giving of the Torah.
The essence of the Giving of the Torah,
when Divinity was drawn down into the physicality of the world,
is –
איז –
to effect and give power that there should be a dwelling place for the Holy One, blessed be He, in the lower realms
(as explained in many places).
And in continuation of this and as a "consequence" of the Giving of the Torah came the building of the Mishkan –
which further connected Divinity with the physicality of the world,
so that it becomes "And I will dwell in their midst"45 in a physical Mishkan,
built from physical planks, etc.
And the completion of the work of the Mishkan was in the month of Kislev. It follows that the virtue of the month of Kislev is connected with the effect of making a dwelling place for the Holy One, blessed be He, in the lower realms,
for from the side of the arousal from below of the Jewish people, the Mishkan was entirely ready in the month of Kislev,
only from the side of the arousal from above and revelation from Above –
this was not yet complete at that time,
therefore the erection of the Mishkan was only later. But afterwards
(many generations later)
there was the "completion" of this through the dedication of the altar in the days of Chanukah in the month of Kislev. From this it is understood that the inner essence of the Mishkan
(to make a dwelling place for the Holy One, blessed be He, in the lower realms)
has a connection with the month of Kislev:
(Therefore the Omnipresent had to repay the month of Kislev with the "dedication of the Chashmonaim",
for then the work of the Mishkan was completed).
And in every single year "these days are remembered and performed"46,
and according to the explanation of the Arizal on this47, that in these days the same effluences that were drawn down the first time are drawn down.
[And regarding the days of Chanukah there is more:
Not only are "these days are remembered and performed" and the same spiritual effluences as the first time are drawn down (according to the explanation of the Arizal),
but more:
On the nights of Chanukah one actually and physically lights the Chanukah lights,
because "these lights are never nullified",
as will be explained below].
And according to the principle that "one ascends in holiness"48,
it is understood that in every single year the effluences come in a more elevated manner.
Similar to what is explained in Iggeres HaKodesh49 regarding the new light that is drawn down every Rosh Hashanah.
More:
It is not merely "one ascends in holiness",
an ascent in the same matter and category that existed until now,
rather the ascent is in a completely new level,
which is incomparably higher than the level at which one stood in the previous year.
One can indeed begin with the first interpretation of "one ascends in holiness",
that he ascends in the same matter,
but ultimately one comes from this interpretation to the higher interpretation,
that he ascends to a new level that is not in the same category as where he stood previously.
And by way of example, as we find in the very matter of the dedication of the Chashmonaim in the days of Chanukah as a "completion" for the Mishkan whose work was completed in the month of Kislev:
It is not the simple meaning that the "completion" of the miracle of Chanukah in the month of Kislev only completed the deficiency that was lacking in the month of Kislev until then, from the aspect that the erection of the Mishkan was only later,
rather the "completion" of Chanukah effected an additional
("completion" from the term)
perfection more elevated than what would have been from the Mishkan itself.
And not only a perfection more elevated in degree and in the same matter,
rather a completely new matter,
incomparable to what would have been in the Mishkan itself
(like the interpretation of "one ascends in holiness",
that it is an ascent to a new level incomparable to the level where he stood previously),
and the explanation:
The Mishkan indeed had in it the virtue that it was the handiwork of Moses,
therefore it is eternal50. But in actuality we see that there are times
(and a multiplicity of time)
when the eternity of the Mishkan is in concealment and hiding,
it is not seen with physical eyes
(although it exists in concealment).
The miracle of Chanukah effected,
that since the miracle occurred "these lights are never nullified"51
(eternity),
not in a manner of concealment
(as is possible regarding the Mishkan),
rather in a manner revealed to the eyes of all,
"these lights are never nullified",
in a manner of being seen with one's finger and saying "this" –
as we see in practice that year after year,
also in the time of exile,
until this very day,
when the days of Chanukah arrive,
one lights the Chanukah lights.
From the Mishkan and the First Temple and the Second Temple, there is certainly a continuous effect and giving of power for all generations
(also during the time of exile),
but this is in spirituality, etc.;
אבער דאס איז ברוחניות וכו';
however, the miracle of Chanukah revealed that "these lights are never nullified" in a physical sense:
In every year, during the days of Chanukah, one kindles the Chanukah lights physically.
That is, when the days of Chanukah arrive, it is not only that "these days are remembered and performed" and the same spiritual influences as the first time are drawn down
(according to the explanation of the Arizal),
but even more:
one actually and physically kindles the Chanukah lights,
because "these lights are never nullified." And as mentioned above –
in every year there is "ascending in holiness" in this,
to a new level that is incomparably higher than the previous level.
Based on this, the greatness of the elevation of the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev is understood:
Since the Shabbat of blessing blesses the month of Kislev, which is such an elevated month,
during which the days of Chanukah occur,
the "completion" of the Mishkan of Moshe
(whose meaning is –
to make for Him, blessed be He, a dwelling place in the lower realms),
and moreover in a manner of "completion" from the term perfection, which is incomparably more elevated,
because through the miracle of Chanukah it was revealed that "these lights are never nullified,"
eternity revealed in all generations,
and in every year there is an addition in this –
from this the greatness of the elevation of the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev is understood,
that it has such a great and elevated power to bless a month like Kislev.
And as explained in Chassidus52 the novelty and elevation of the concept of blessing relative to prayer in this detail,
that blessing indicates that the one who blesses stands higher than the one being blessed,
therefore he has in his hand the power to bless the one being blessed,
which is why blessing is from the term command –
that he stands higher than the matter,
consequently he can command and bless the matter.
And in every single year there is "ascending in holiness" in this month of Kislev,
consequently also in the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev, which stands higher and blesses the month.
In addition to the giving of power from Above for all these matters –
which all that was discussed above is the giving of power from Above that one has
(by virtue of the days of Chanukah in the month of Kislev,
and the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev, etc.) –
there must also be the service of man. And this is emphasized in the concept of Shabbat
(when one blesses the month of Kislev on the Shabbat of blessing):
In connection with Shabbat, our Sages said53 that a Jew becomes a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation." And this is the general concept of the service of man,
that in addition to the powers he receives from the One Above,
he must become a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation,"
where one partner is equal to the other partner
(so to speak),
that is, a Jew must accomplish through his service in the work of creation in an equal manner as the One Above
(so to speak)
accomplished in the work of creation,
so that he should be an equal partner with the One Above.
Regarding each of the six days of creation until the Shabbat day, it is stated in the verse –
"And G-d said, etc.,"
"And G-d saw, etc.,"
all as it is from the side of the One Above;
אלץ ווי דאס איז מצד דעם אויבערשטן;
on the Shabbat day, it is said that the service of man also comes,
until he becomes a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation."
And it is also emphasized in what is stated in the verse regarding the Shabbat day –
"And G-d blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, for on it He rested from all His work which G-d created to make." Our Sages said on this54 that "everything that was created in the six days of creation requires making
(repair),
the mustard needs sweetening, the lupines
(a type of legume)
need sweetening,
the wheat needs to be ground, etc.,"
and this is "which G-d created to make" –
to make and to repair,
as is known that "making" is from the term repair,
with the proof for this from "and she shall make her nails"55,
"and she shall make" from the term repair56. Because according to the explanation that "and she shall make her nails" means that she shall cut her nails57, one cannot translate "and she shall make" in its simple sense,
because one does not make something,
rather one shortens the nails,
rather the meaning here of "and she shall make" is from the term repair,
that one repairs the nails by cutting them.
Also before this she has nails that grow from the fingers,
but then they can be improper,
too long etc.
Therefore there must be "and she shall do her nails",
that she corrects the nails by cutting them off
(and the cut-off nails –
burn them etc.),
and then
(she does not nullify the nails,
rather it)
the nails remain,
but they are corrected and can be used for good etc.
Incidentally:
The matter in the service of man is understood from the well-known sicha of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that when one has nails,
one must use them towards oneself and not towards another 58.
That is, there must be "and she shall do her nails",
correction of nails,
in the service of each and every one:
Since the nails are a part of the body,
the intention is not that one should discard them,
rather that one should use them for good and holiness:
The nature of nails is,
that they scratch –
one must first correct the nails
("cut them off" etc.)
so that they are proper,
and that which they scratch –
one must correct so that they do not scratch another, rather,
if necessary,
one can use them to scratch oneself,
i.e., to scratch off things that one has within oneself that need to be scratched off. As explained in the sicha with several details on this.
From this is understood the connection and lesson of "and she shall do her nails" to a Jew in the present time,
for seemingly this is a matter that was at the time when Jews went to war
(a discretionary war)
in the time of David etc.,
and "and you shall see among the captives a woman of beautiful form" 59,
but what relevance does this have to a Jew now?
According to the above, how the matter of "and she shall do her nails" exists in the service of man,
(as understood in the aforementioned sicha) –
the lesson from this is understood also now).
That is 60:
Although regarding the six days of creation it is stated "and God saw all that He had made and behold it was very good",
not merely good,
rather "very good" –
nevertheless when the Sabbath day comes we say "which God created to do –
to correct",
that a man must come and correct the world that was created in the six days of creation.
But one must understand this:
After the act of creation was in a manner of "very good",
with all the interpretations thereof, as the same Midrash Rabbah
(which says "everything that was created in the six days of creation requires making",
correction)
says earlier 61,
including also the interpretation 62 that this refers to the evil inclination,
i.e., the service of "with all your heart 63 –
with both your inclinations" 64,
the matter of transformation,
through which it becomes "very good" –
after all this, how is it possible to say that the world still requires correction,
to do –
to correct?!
For the meaning of "correction" is much more than merely "completing":
When one says that something requires completion,
it means that even before this it is a complete thing,
only something is lacking in it and one adds to it additional perfection. But when one says to correct –
it means that until now there is a lack in the entire thing,
to such an extent –
that one must correct it.
To correct means indeed not that one nullifies the thing,
the thing remains in existence,
rather, since the thing has a defect that requires correction –
one corrects the thing itself,
so that it should be a complete thing.
As discussed above regarding "and she shall do her nails":
One does not nullify the nails,
rather, since the nails have a defect within them
(too long,
they scratch etc.),
one corrects them themselves
("and she shall do her nails"),
consequently the nails themselves become proper through this.
It is not understood:
After in the six days of creation it was "very good" –
how is it possible to say that there is a defect in it,
to such an extent that it requires "to do –
to correct"?!
It will be understood according to the explanation that was discussed in the previous farbrengen 65 regarding the recitation of Tachanun specifically after the Amidah prayer:
Others wish to learn that that which one says Tachanun only then is because until then one did not know about a defect that one had,
and at the time one is elevated to the level of the Amidah prayer,
one realizes that one had a defect beforehand,
then one says Tachanun.
But one cannot say this regarding all Jews:
The text of the Tachanun prayer is said by all Jews –
it would be, Heaven forbid, saying regarding all Jews that before the Amidah prayer they lived in error and afterwards they catch themselves that they previously had a deficiency!
Rather, the explanation in that which one says Tachanun specifically after the Amidah prayer is
(as discussed previously)66:
Until the Amidah prayer, his service was indeed in completeness, in truth, without any deficiency. But when he is elevated to a higher level –
the Amidah prayer when he stands as a servant before his Master –
then according to his current level, a new deficiency becomes apparent to him,
a thing which previously was not a deficiency.
As discussed previously in connection with the matter of "all his days in repentance"67,
and as the Alter Rebbe explains this in Tanya68.
And accordingly, this is also the explanation in our matter:
The level of the six days of creation, in and of themselves, is "very good" in truth. But when there is an ascent to a more elevated level on the day of Shabbat –
then in relation to this current higher level, a higher perfection is felt to be lacking,
and the perfection that existed previously during the six days of creation is not sufficient.
That is, according to his current level, the level of Maaseh Bereishis as it is from the six days of creation is in a manner of deficiency which he needs to rectify
("which God created to do" –
to rectify),
even though regarding the level of the six days of creation beforehand, this was a state of "very good" without any deficiency in truth.
And to whom was given the matter of "to do and to rectify",
to rectify the deficiencies in Maaseh Bereishis that came about in relation to the higher level of the day of Shabbat? It was given specifically to a Jew,
that he should be a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation" through accomplishing the "to do and to rectify" in Maaseh Bereishis.
That is, the perfection of "very good" that was during the six days of creation beforehand –
is from the side of the One Above,
"And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good";
"וירא אלקים את כל אשר עשה והנה טוב מאד";
and the "to do and to rectify" in Maaseh Bereishis –
is done through a Jew who becomes a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation".
And as is understood from the examples in the Midrash on the matter of "Everything that was created in the six days of creation requires making
(rectification)" –
"The wheat needs to be ground, etc.":
Wheat, in and of itself
(as they are from Maaseh Bereishis, in and of themselves)
are not fit for eating,
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said69: "A person brings wheat,
wheat he chews
(raw)
". But through that which the "helpmeet opposite him" of this person takes the wheat and makes from them bread
(by grinding the wheat she makes flour,
and from it –
bread),
a rectification is accomplished in Maaseh Bereishis
(in the wheat),
until that from the wheat which is in the category of the vegetative,
one makes bread,
and a person eats it,
it becomes blood and flesh like his flesh,
consequently it is elevated from the category of the vegetative to the category of the speaking,
and especially when a Jew –
Adam, on account of Adamah l'Elyon –
eats it,
and especially when he eats this bread on the day of Shabbat,
when then the eating itself is a mitzvah,
not only in the category of "All your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven"70,
but as soon as he eats it, it becomes a mitzvah.
It emerges that through the person a rectification is accomplished in Maaseh Bereishis –
he takes wheat that the One Above created and elevates them to the category of the speaking until he makes them a part of a mitzvah of Oneg Shabbat.
From this is understood the sublime powers that one has while standing on Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev –
both regarding the bestowal of power from Above,
since Shabbat Mevarchim Chodesh Kislev also blesses the days of Chanukah
(as above, section 10),
and regarding the service of man,
as emphasized on the day of Shabbat,
when a Jew accomplishes a rectification in Maaseh Bereishis and becomes a "partner with the Holy One, blessed be He, in the work of creation".
Consequently, a Jew must utilize the powers that he has on this Shabbat and bring them down into actual deed,
in all matters of Torah and mitzvos,
and in the dissemination of Judaism in general, and the dissemination of the wellsprings outward in particular.
And one may add to this:
And the general innovation mentioned above regarding Shabbos,
when there is an ascent to a level higher than the level of the six days of creation that preceded it, and therefore one must then rectify the new deficiencies in the work of creation that arise in relation to this level –
this is also the explanation of the matter of "Your springs will spread forth outward" specifically in the latter generations,
for "Your springs will spread forth outward" is connected with
(Shabbos Mevarchim)
the month of Kislev in particular
(as will be explained below):
The matter of the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah was innovated only in the latter generations:
In the time of the Arizal, it became "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom"71,
and afterwards, in the time of the Alter Rebbe, after Petersburg, the essential matter of "Your springs will spread forth outward" began
(as is known from the sicha about this72),
but not so in the generations that preceded, when it was not "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom",
and certainly not in a manner of dissemination.
This is seemingly not understood:
How can it be said that in all the early generations –
which were generations more elevated than the latter generations,
they lacked the most essential matter –
the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah to the extent of dissemination,
and only in the latter generations,
when "the generation is worthy
(in a revealed way)
"73,
" 73,
was this revealed in such a manner?!
There were the generations of the Tannaim and Amoraim,
including the generation of Rashbi,
who is particularly connected with the inner dimension of the Torah,
as Chassidus itself explains –
nevertheless, it states in the Zohar74 that Rashbi placed restrictions on the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah:
"And thus I will arrange for you: Rabbi Abba will write, and Rabbi Elazar my son will study, and the rest of the comrades will whisper in their hearts." And he said that because of this there would need to be exile, etc.
(as discussed earlier<sup>75</sup> in explaining the words of the Zohar on this<sup>76</sup>);
(ווי גערעדט פריער 75 בביאור דברי הזהר בזה 76);
And so too in the generations after that, which had a multitude of great men of Israel –
nevertheless, at that time as well it was not "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom",
and certainly not its dissemination. Until even in the generation of the Ramak,
with whom one finds explanation in understanding and comprehension of the inner dimension of the Torah,
more than in the writings of the Arizal,
as is seen in his book Pardes –
nevertheless, he too was before the Arizal,
and consequently before the time of "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom";
ובמילא פארן זמן פון "מצוה לגלות זאת החכמה";
Only in the generation of the Arizal did it become "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom",
but this too was with several restrictions –
as is seen regarding the "Lions of the Arizal"
(the disciples of the Arizal),
that they studied the inner dimension of the Torah with several conditions,
and only in certain circles, etc.<sup>77</sup>;
און נאר חוגים מסויימים וכו' 77;
Even in the time of the Baal Shem Tov
(after the Arizal)
the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah was also in a particular manner, etc.;
איז גילוי פנימיות התורה אויך געווען באופן מסויים כו';
Only after Petersburg did the essential matter of "Your springs will spread forth outward" begin –
the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah in a manner of dissemination even to the outside,
without any restrictions78!
This is more than "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom",
which is only in a manner of revelation,
but not so after Petersburg, when it began in a manner of dissemination,
even to the outside.
The question arises:
How is it that in all the generations before, the matter of the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah to the extent of dissemination was lacking –
and only in the latter generations,
when "the generation is worthy
(in a revealed way)",
did "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom" come,
until –
the dissemination of the springs outward?!
According to the above explanation of the innovation of Shabbos –
this is understood:
In all the generations before, there was indeed a state of "very good" without any deficiency in truth
(like the example of the six days of creation).
But when there is an ascent to yet another level
(like the example of the level of Shabbos)
the previous service is not sufficient,
and a higher perfection is lacking –
therefore, at that time the matter of the dissemination of the springs outward was added.
The revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah in the manner of the dissemination of the springs outward is particularly connected with
(Shabbos Mevarchim)
the month of Kislev –
with the days of Chanukah within it:
The miracle of Chanukah was with oil
("they found only one cruse of oil, etc."79).
And therefore the miracle of Chanukah was established with candles
(with oil and wick),
so that each and every year, one should light the Chanukah candles every night of Chanukah "at the entrance of his house on the outside"80.
In order to know what is the true essence of the matter of the miracle of the oil, etc.,
one must see how the matter of oil is in the Torah
(from which the truth of every matter in the world is derived and illuminated):
The concept of oil in the Torah is –
the secrets of secrets of the Torah. As explained in Chassidus81 that wine in the Torah is the secrets of the Torah –
"wine enters, secret emerges"82
(secrets and mysteries of the Torah),
and oil which "floats on top of wine"83 is –
the secrets of secrets of the Torah.
From this it is understood that the concept of the miracle of Chanukah with oil is connected to the secrets of secrets of the Torah. And they established lights which are kindled "at the entrance of his house from the outside" –
the dissemination of the wellsprings
(secrets of secrets of the Torah – oil)
outward.
And in Chanukah there is an additional enhancement in this
(which one does not pay attention to):
It is not only oil alone –
secrets of secrets of the Torah,
but rather how oil is connected with a miracle,
i.e., secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner. And this is even more than the secrets of secrets alone.
Others will ask a question about this:
How is it possible to say that the Torah
(secrets of secrets of the Torah)
is connected with a miracle –
in Torah there must be "I toiled and I found"84,
the toil of man in a natural way etc.?
As for asking questions –
there is no end to it. And there are those who only want to ask questions,
and they are not interested in an answer –
they only want to stir up trouble,
they ask questions...
and in the end they will also find an answer...
But the main thing is –
action in practice,
that during the days of Chanukah every person should kindle the Chanukah lights "at the entrance of his house from the outside".
And one must know,
that when a Jew,
whichever Jew it may be,
kindles the Chanukah lights,
in addition to the fact that he fulfills the mitzvah in its simple sense
(which is the main thing) –
he also thereby draws down the concept of the secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner! And he does this not in inner chambers,
but rather he draws it outward –
"at the entrance of his house from the outside"!
One must understand the rationale in this –
first there must be "we will do",
actual deed,
and one has the promise that afterwards it will certainly bring to "we will hear",
hearing and understanding of the matter.
Based on this there is additional arousal –
standing on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev –
in the matter of the "Chanukah campaign",
to endeavor that every Jew should kindle the Chanukah lights during the days of Chanukah:
In addition to the main point in this,
since every Jew must fulfill the mitzvah in its simple sense,
therefore one must endeavor that every Jew should fulfill it in practice –
there is even more arousal in this from the fact that when one contemplates the most wondrous matter that every Jew accomplishes when he kindles a Chanukah light –
that through this he accomplishes the concept of the secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner –
the additional vitality and alacrity that this gives to engaging in the "Chanukah campaign" is understood!
But the claim is –
we are in exile. And as emphasized in the Chanukah miracle itself:
Were it not for the matter of exile,
that "when the Greeks entered the Sanctuary they defiled all the oils in the Sanctuary etc." would the entire matter of Chanukah not have existed?!
Nevertheless, it is said to him,
that every Jew through kindling the Chanukah lights accomplishes the secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner!
And on the contrary –
from this the wondrous matter in this is even more understood:
Notwithstanding that one is in the time of exile,
when a Jew kindles the Chanukah lights in the time of exile –
he draws down the concept of the secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner!
Knowing this –
it should add even more to the effort in the "Chanukah campaign".
And the deed is the main thing:
Standing on the Shabbat of blessing the month of Kislev,
when one blesses the month of Kislev and the days of Chanukah within it,
with all the elevations of the days of Chanukah
(as discussed above at length) –
one must begin to prepare for the involvement in the "Chanukah campaign".
And although it may be that one is occupied with other good things,
which in his opinion are more important than involvement in the "Chanukah campaign" –
nevertheless, since the "Chanukah campaign" is a matter that is time-bound in the month of Kislev,
one must first and foremost occupy oneself with it:
In the month of Cheshvan,
and likewise in the other months –
a Jew cannot fulfill in actual deed the mitzvah of kindling the Chanukah lights and thereby draw down the secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner;
קען א איד ניט מקיים זיין במעשה בפועל די מצוה פון אנצינדן נרות חנוכה און דערביי ממשיך זיין רזין דרזין דאורייתא באופן נסי;
the only time when he can do this –
is during the days of Chanukah in the month of Kislev
(and at the beginning of the month of Tevet).
It is therefore understood that now one must first and foremost occupy oneself with it.
And furthermore, there is additional strength for this –
from the fact that the Shabbat of Blessing the month of Kislev in this year is Parashat Toldot,
which teaches and gives strength to bring about that there should be "offspring" (toldot),
and in the manner of "the offspring of Yitzchak,"
as discussed above
(section 6 and onward).
May it be His will that from the Chanukah lights we merit to kindle the "lamps of Tziyon,"85
the Menorah in the third Beit HaMikdash,
which is specifically of seven branches,
speedily in our days, literally,
and amidst joy and gladness of heart.
Maamar (similar to a sicha)

It is also customary to study a verse from the weekly parshah with Rashi's commentary and a topic in the Reshimot
(notes)
of the Tatte on the Zohar of our parshah.
In our parshah
(Toldot)
at its beginning, chapter 25, verse 24, it states regarding the birth of Yaakov and Esav:
"And her days were fulfilled"
(of Rivkah)
"to give birth, and behold, there were twins in her womb." Rashi cites the words "And her days were fulfilled" and explains:
"But by Tamar it is written86 'And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth,'
that her days were not fulfilled, for she gave birth at seven months."
There is the well-known difficulty in Rashi:
What is difficult in the verse that Rashi needed to explain anything;
וואס איז דא שווער אין פסוק אז רש"י זאל דארפן עפעס מפרש זיין;
the verse seems completely straightforward?
Even though there is the question of the variation in the verse regarding Tamar
(where it says "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth,"
as opposed to here "And her days were fulfilled") –
this is a question that arises for a five-year-old only when he studies that verse in Parashat Vayeishev,
but at this point he does not know of that verse,
and as has been discussed many times, the rule in Rashi on the Torah,
that he answers a question of a five-year-old when the question arises, but not before.
And as we see in practice,
there
(in Parashat Vayeishev)
Rashi indeed explains it. So why does he explain it here in Parashat Toldot, where it is seemingly still straightforward?!
Also:
Why does Rashi specify and write that the explanation of "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth"
(not "And her days were fulfilled")
is –
איז –
"that her days were not fulfilled, for she gave birth at seven months":
In the verse it only says "And her days were fulfilled" and "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth,"
and the opposite of "fulfilled"
("and they were fulfilled")
is "lacking,"
and not specifically lacking seven months:
It could be nine months truncated,87
or seven months,
or seven months truncated,
as the five-year-old knows from the birth of his brothers, sisters, and friends –
Rashi should have only written that by Rivkah there were full months and by Tamar –
lacking months,
as it indeed states in the Midrash?!
And the commentators on Rashi do not address this.
[Regarding the second Rashi beginning on the verse –
"And behold, they were twins,"
it has already been discussed88,
but now we wish to discuss other points in it.]
And as will be explained below.
In the notes of the Tatte on the Zohar of our parshah, there are many notes,
but there is one note
(near the end of the notes on our parshah)
which discusses a matter connected to this year –
which is a leap year.
In connection with what is stated in our parshah89 that Rivkah said to Yaakov, "Go now to the flock and take for me from there two choice young goats, and I will make them delicacies for your father"
(and through this Yaakov would receive Yitzchak's blessings) –
it states in the Zohar90:
"At that time it was Passover eve…
And therefore she made two dishes. Rabbi Yehudah said: Here is a hint that the children of Yaakov are destined to offer two goats, one for Hashem and one for Azazel on Yom Kippur…
And therefore two young goats, and from both of them Yitzchak tasted and ate."
The father explains in his note on this maamar91 that what is stated in the Zohar "At that time it was erev Pesach... and he made two cooked dishes" –
and regarding the matter of "he made two cooked dishes" –
"this refers to the Pesach offering and the Chagigah offering on erev Pesach
(because the Pesach offering is eaten after being satiated92)
." Afterwards he explains the connection of the statement of Rabbi Yehudah
("here there is a hint... two goats... on Yom Kippur")
with what was stated earlier that "at that time it was erev Pesach",
i.e., the connection between Yom Kippur and Pesach,
and he elaborates in the note:
"And this is what sometimes in a leap year
(like now,
the year 5700)
they read the portion of Yom Kippur which is in Parshat Acharei before Pesach" –
as will also be the case in this year which is also a leap year,
as one can see from the calendar,
that Parshat Acharei will be read before Pesach. And this is not, heaven forbid, by chance,
but certainly this is because Pesach and Yom Kippur
(which is discussed in Parshat Acharei)
have an inner connection between them,
as the father explains there.
In Or HaChamah on the Zohar
(by the Ari, of blessed memory,
and others)
there is the same explanation as the father's regarding the Zohar's phrase "two cooked dishes",
that this refers to the Pesach offering and the Chagigah offering93.
And one should note:
The fact that the father does not write his explanation here in the name of its author –
that this is already stated earlier in Or HaChamah,
and similarly in other places where he gives an explanation that appears in Or HaChamah,
and likewise sometimes he gives an explanation that is only according to one opinion in Or HaChamah and he does not relate to the other opinions –
this is because in our home the book Or HaChamah was not present. In general, the book was not readily available at that time,
and especially in that part of the country where we lived.
There were many books in the home,
but the book Or HaChamah was not among them.
Therefore, in his notes the father does not cite from the book Or HaChamah,
even though in this instance,
and in several places,
he agrees with the view of several great ones
(and in this instance –
the Ari, of blessed memory, and others)
as brought in Or HaChamah. Thus far the note.
The Ari, of blessed memory, there in Or HaChamah explains that in this Zohar there is a dispute regarding when the incident occurred in which Yaakov brought the "two kid goats" and received Yitzchak's blessings:
"There is a dispute among the Sages, of blessed memory,
one says it was on erev Pesach and one says it was on Yom Kippur." And according to the opinion that it was on erev Pesach, the "two kid goats" correspond to the Pesach offering and the Chagigah. And Rabbi Yehudah holds that it was on Yom Kippur,
and the "two kid goats" correspond to "the two goats, one for Hashem and one for Azazel on Yom Kippur",
for just as the two goats on Yom Kippur brought atonement and blessing to Israel,
so too did Yaakov bring the "two kid goats" and through this merited to receive Yitzchak's blessings,
which are the most exalted blessings,
in a manner of an increase of vitality,
as explained in the Siddur94 and in many places.
But according to this explanation, a great novelty emerges,
that according to the opinion that it was on Yom Kippur –
it emerges that Yitzchak sent Esav on Yom Kippur "Go out to the field and hunt game for me"95,
even though Yitzchak fulfilled the entire Torah!
As is known, Avraham Avinu fulfilled the entire Torah96,
and as emphasized in our parshah itself –
"Because Avraham hearkened to My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My Torahs"97,
and by Avraham it is stated "he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of Hashem to do righteousness and justice"98,
consequently, his son Yitzchak also fulfilled the entire Torah99,
including,
of course,
also Yom Kippur.
But according to the aforementioned explanation in the Zohar that there is an opinion that Yitzchak's blessing was on Yom Kippur,
it emerges that he commanded Esav on Yom Kippur "Go out to the field and hunt game for me"!
Therefore, there is another explanation in the Zohar,
as the father explains100,
that according to everyone it happened on erev Pesach,
and the two matters that are stated in the Zohar,
that the "two kid goats" are connected with (a)
erev Pesach,
or with (b)
Yom Kippur,
are not two opinions regarding when it happened,
but rather two hints in the matter:
one hint that the "two kid goats" correspond to the Pesach offering and the Chagigah,
and a second hint that they correspond to the two goats on Yom Kippur101.
The reason why the first allusion
(corresponding to the Paschal offering and the festive offering)
is not sufficient,
even though the event occurred on the eve of Passover,
and a second allusion is needed that they correspond to the two goats on Yom Kippur –
one must say:
The father brings down in the note the law in the Rambam 102 and in other codifiers
(based on the Mishnah 103 and Gemara 102),
that the reason why one must eat a festive offering on the night of Passover,
is so that the Paschal offering be eaten on a full stomach;
איז בכדי דער פסח זאל זיין נאכל על השובע;
in what case is this said –
when there are many registered for the Paschal offering,
consequently if they will not eat the festive offering,
the eating of the Paschal offering will not be on a full stomach. But when he eats the Paschal offering alone,
or there are few registered for the offering,
in which case he will be satiated even from eating only the Paschal offering –
one need not bring a festive offering 104.
Accordingly, it is also understood regarding Yitzchak:
since the "two kid goats" are for Yitzchak alone –
it is not so fitting that they allude to the Paschal offering and the festive offering,
because according to the law Yitzchak would not need a festive offering,
since he will become satiated from the Paschal offering alone.
Therefore, one seeks another allusion that the "two kid goats" allude to the two goats on Yom Kippur
(as Rabbi Yehudah says).
And the father in the note explains the inner connection between the two allusions,
Passover and Yom Kippur,
as above.
He does not, however, explain the details of the matter and how this is in the service of man –
and as will be explained below.
Here is the place to complete the matters that were discussed previously. And with an introduction:
It has been discussed many times that sometimes one is precise only in the words that express a certain intellect,
and thereby one forgets the content of the matter being discussed. In order to express an intellectual thing, one indeed needs words,
but the main thing is not the words,
but rather the content of the intellect that the words express.
[For example, as discussed previously regarding Rashi:
One is precise in the words of Rashi on "and her days were fulfilled",
but one must not forget the question on the entirety of the content of the matter:
Why do the words "and her days were fulfilled" need to appear in the verse at all? And after one understands this, one can be precise in the words of Rashi,
and as below].
And regarding this, concerning a question that was asked about what was discussed at the farbrengen before this, in connection with non-kosher animals and beasts 105:
It was explained 106 that the fact that we speak about not looking at pictures of non-kosher animals and beasts is not a contradiction to going to a zoo and seeing non-kosher animals and beasts there –
for two reasons: (a)
In order to recite the blessing "Who varies the creatures" and the like
(as the ruling in the Shulchan Aruch 107). (b)
Because of contemplation on "How great are Your works, Hashem".
A whole "commotion" was made 108:
The law in the Shulchan Aruch 109! Regarding the blessing "Who varies the creatures" is,
that "one recites it only the first time",
and so the Alter Rebbe rules in Hilchos Birkas Hanehenin 110. And according to one opinion 111 one recites the blessing "once every thirty days" since one sees the unusual creature –
consequently, according to this, it emerges,
apparently,
that one can go to a zoo only the first time,
or once in thirty days
(according to one opinion),
when one can recite the blessing "Who varies the creatures",
but not more,
because one can no longer recite the blessing!
And regarding this, it was asked:
The blessing "Who varies the creatures" is only on certain animals
(monkey,
elephant, etc.) –
according to the explanation about going to a zoo because of the blessing "Who varies the creatures",
it emerges that one can go there to look only at certain animals
(those on which one can recite the blessing)
and not at others!
So the answer to this is,
and in truth this is not in the category of an "answer" to a "question",
because the "question" has no place from the outset –
founded on what was said,
that one is precise only in the words and does not think about the content of the intellect that lies in the words:
In addition to what was already addressed by the aforementioned questions with the second explanation about going to a zoo,
because of the reason of contemplation on "How great are Your works, Hashem",
by virtue of which one can always go to a zoo,
and look at all animals –
the matter is also understood from the reason of reciting the blessing "Who varies the creatures":
When one is precise only in the words of the Shulchan Aruch and of the Halachos of Birkas HaNehenin of the Alter Rebbe,
it states there indeed that "he does not bless except the first time" when one sees the "great wonder". But what is the content of the matter? That when one sees a "great wonder" of an unusual creation,
one praises the Most High that He is "He Who changes the creations". From this it is understood that even when one sees again the same unusual creature
(for which one has already once made the blessing of Meshaneh HaBrios)
it is not the meaning,
that since one cannot now make the blessing, one cannot think and feel the greatness of the Creator
(that He is "He Who changes the creations")
through looking at the creature –
it is an unparalleled wildness to say such a thing;
ס'איז א ווילדקייט שאין כמוה צו זאגן אזא זאך;
it is a simple matter that every time one sees the unusual creature one can and must think and feel the greatness of the Creator,
that the creature does not make itself, but the Most High created it, etc.
Rather, what is a law in Halachos of Birkas HaNehenin –
is the obligation of the blessing verbally with the mouth only the first time that one sees the thing,
but this does not detract at all from the fact that the person thinks and feels the greatness of the Creator through seeing the thing.
That is, the obligation of the blessing is when there is a "measure",
in this case –
the first time that one sees the creature. But after one has already seen it once, one cannot make a blessing because it is "lacking a measure",
but this does not affect his thought and feeling of the greatness of the Creator through seeing the creature.
And so too, as it is regarding the blessing of Shehecheyanu:
The obligation of the blessing of Shehecheyanu on a new fruit
(for example)
is –
איז –
once a year, etc.<sup>112</sup>. This, however, is only the measure when one can make the blessing;
איין מאל א יאר כו' 112. דאס איז אבער נאר דער שיעור ווען מ'קען מאכן די ברכה;
but it is not the meaning that when he sees or eats the fruit
(for which he has already made the blessing of Shehecheyanu)
during the year and he does not make a Shehecheyanu on it –
he does not think and is not feeling praise to the Holy One, blessed be He, for that He created such a fruit. Certainly he thinks and feels praise to Hashem for the fruit every time he eats it or sees it during the entire year.
And so too, as with the blessing of "Shehakol Nihyeh Bidvaro":
There is a measure in time when one must make the blessing again after one has already made the blessing
(on a drink of water, etc.).
But it is not the meaning that every time he drinks water in between, when he does not need to make a blessing verbally –
he does not think and does not feel the content of the matter that "everything came into being by His word" and he does not thank the Most High in his thought and in his feeling for that He created the water.
And corresponding to this comes the farbrengen:
One made the blessing of "Borei Pri HaGafen" on the wine at the beginning of the farbrengen,
and at the end of the farbrengen one will make a blessing after meals,
and in between the farbrengen lasts several hours and during the farbrengen one does not need to make the blessing of Borei HaGafen again on the drinking of the wine –
it is not the meaning that regarding the wine that one drinks during the farbrengen one does not think and does not feel praise to Hashem for the wine that He created. Certainly one does this,
only the obligation of the blessing is not there because it is still within the measure for which one fulfills his obligation with the blessing from before.
And corresponding to this was a discussion in connection with the matter of anointing the king with the anointing oil113:
It was explained that the matter of anointing with the anointing oil effects the permanence and eternity of the kingdom. And this is the reason why only the kings of the House of David are anointed with the anointing oil,
because specifically his kingdom has permanence and eternity,
as understood from the language of the Rambam114 "Since David was anointed, he merited the crown of kingship, and behold the kingship is his and his male descendants forever, etc."
And the reason can be said:
The anointing oil is the oil that Moshe made in such a way that "this shall be for Me for your generations"115 and "it is entirely preserved for the future to come"116. And therefore the anointing with the anointing oil effects "for your generations",
the permanence and eternity in the kingdom,
that "the kings of the House of David are those who stand forever"117.
They asked about this:
Also regarding other kings,
kings of Israel
(not kings of the House of David)
we find the concept of eternity,
as the Rambam writes 118 "the monarchy is an inheritance etc.",
"the monarchy is an inheritance for the king forever" 119,
even though "they do not anoint kings of Israel with the anointing oil, but with balsam oil" 120. So how can it be said that specifically the anointing oil brings about the concept of eternity in the monarchy?
What seemingly one could ask further:
Not only is the monarchy an inheritance,
but all appointments,
as the Rambam writes 121:
"And not only the monarchy, but all the offices and all the appointments in Israel are an inheritance for his son and his son's son until the end of time." Even a caretaker in a synagogue,
not only a warden,
over whom the householders are the masters
(although he thinks he is the master...)
But since this is an appointment in Israel,
it is an inheritance for him and his sons until the end of time. And in the language of our Sages 122 –
"Even the head of the water distribution –
a water carrier –
is appointed from Heaven",
therefore it is an inheritance for him and his sons. And all these "offices" and "appointments" in Israel are not appointed by anointing with the anointing oil,
simply. From this we see that eternity and inheritance are not necessarily connected with the anointing oil –
so how does it fit with what was explained, that specifically the monarchy of David is eternal because the kings of the House of David are anointed with the anointing oil?
The explanation of this is –
simply:
In the matter of an enduring and eternal monarchy, there are two aspects:
As it is from the perspective of the law in Halacha,
and as there is in it the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He.
Halacha determines that "the monarchy is an inheritance"
(and likewise "all the offices and all the appointments in Israel are an inheritance for his son and his son's son until the end of time").
But the Halacha of "the monarchy is an inheritance" does not guarantee that this will actually be an inheritance,
i.e., that the king will have sons and sons' sons until the end of time who will inherit his monarchy. For this, one must come to a second thing
(in addition to the law of "the monarchy is an inheritance") –
the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He.
Halacha has nothing to say about this. Halacha can only state a law,
that "the monarchy is an inheritance",
but whether the king will actually have sons etc. who will inherit his monarchy –
depends on a special blessing from the Most High.
And this is the difference between the general concept that "the monarchy is an inheritance" as it applies to the kings of Israel
(and the concept that "all the offices and appointments in Israel are an inheritance for his son and his son's son until the end of time"),
and the eternity and endurance of the monarchy of the House of David:
Regarding the kings of Israel and the other offices and appointments in Israel –
there is a law that it is an inheritance,
but the Most High did not give a special blessing that this will actually be an inheritance. Rather, this depends on the conduct of the king:
If he conducts himself properly,
the Most High blesses him with sons and sons' sons who inherit his monarchy,
if not, Heaven forbid –
he does not receive this blessing,
and consequently, although "the monarchy is an inheritance"
(from the perspective of the law),
it is not actualized because the blessing is lacking;
ווערט עס אבער ניט נמשך בפועל וויבאלד אז עס פעלט די ברכה;
However, regarding the monarchy of the House of David, the Most High also gave a special blessing
(in addition to the law of "the monarchy is an inheritance"),
that "the kings of the House of David are those who stand forever, as it is said, 'Your throne shall be established forever'",
i.e., that his monarchy will be enduring and eternal "forever".
And the second aspect in the endurance and eternity of the monarchy
(that it will actually be an inheritance –
which depends on the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He –)
is connected specifically with anointing with the anointing oil
(in contrast to the aspect –
"the monarchy is an inheritance" from the perspective of the law).
Also in the anointing oil there are these two aspects:
As it is from the perspective of the law in Halacha,
and as there is in it the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He.
From the perspective of the law in Halacha –
there are several laws regarding the making of the anointing oil,
several spices,
which spices,
the details connected with the compounding of the spices etc.
In addition to this, there is (the)
blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, which He placed into the anointing oil –
that "this shall be for Me for your generations" and "it is entirely preserved for the future to come". For it is not possible to say that "this shall be for Me for your generations" is a command or a law in Halacha –
because it is not possible to decree that the anointing oil should be "for your generations". This depends only on the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He,
that it will be "for your generations".
And therefore,
from the aspect of the blessing in the anointing oil
(that "this shall be for you for your generations")
he also effects the blessing "for your generations" in the kingdom of the House of David –
the actual existence and eternity of the kingdom,
that "the kings of the House of David are those who stand forever."
According to the above explanation –
then also regarding the kings of Israel it is said "the kingdom is an inheritance,"
and likewise regarding every authority and appointment in Israel,
but the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, in this
(that it should indeed be drawn down in actuality)
is dependent on the conduct of the king, etc. –
we also have an answer to the question that was asked in connection with the matter of agency:
On one hand it is said that "a person's agent is like himself,"
exactly like the principal,
himself;
אליין;
on the other hand, the law is that an agent who changes his agency –
he ceases to be an agent. The question was asked:
How do these two things reconcile –
if the agent is "like himself" of the principal,
how can he cease to be an agent,
is he not the principal himself?
The explanation of this is understood according to the above:
Being an agent, he is indeed "like himself" of the principal. But when he changes his agency,
he does not receive the blessing that his agency should be drawn down,
consequently he ceases to be an agent. As an example, like the king of Israel who, according to law, has "the kingdom is an inheritance" forever,
but if his conduct is improper,
he does not receive the blessing from the Most High that his kingdom should be drawn down in actuality forever.
But when the agent conducts himself properly and does not change his agency and does not deviate from the will of the principal –
he receives the blessing that his agency is enduring and eternal,
as an example, like the kingdom of David.
This matter is connected to every Jew,
because every Jew is an agent of the Holy One, blessed be He.
And the connection of the kingdom of David to each one as an agent of the Holy One, blessed be He –
is understood:
King David is the agent of the Sefirah of Malchut below in this world.
As explained in Sefer HaMitzvot of the Tzemach Tzedek, that King Solomon had wisdom but not the wisdom within Malchut,
but King David –
is the essence of the matter of Malchut,
and his wisdom is the wisdom within Malchut.
This also comes in connection with the gathering of emissaries that begins this Shabbat.
No*.
This Shabbat also begins the gathering of the emissaries
(from the United States).
And in connection with this, several points will be discussed regarding the matter and role of the emissaries.
All Jews are emissaries of the Most High, and especially through that which they fulfill the Torah and mitzvot,
as our sages, of blessed memory, said: "They would honor the mitzvot, which are His agents." They have the superiority of "a person's agent
(of the Most High)
is like himself,"
and as the Alter Rebbe adds* –
"like himself"
(of the principal) literally.
Among Jews themselves, there are those who merited to be special emissaries of the Nasi of our generation, His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
or through his agent and an agent appoints an agent, etc. –
for the dissemination of Judaism in general,
and especially –
the dissemination of the wellsprings outward.
The emissaries possess within themselves all the superiorities that an agent has:
"a person's agent is like himself,"
up to "literally like himself" of the Nasi of our generation, for "the Nasi is everything."
And as was written and spoken to the emissaries in the Holy Land –
and it is simple that this also applies to the emissaries who are now here,
and to all emissaries throughout the entire world –
that there are three levels and modes in agency: (a)
the action of the agent is the principal's, (b)
the limb of the agent
(for example – his hand)
with which he fulfills his agency is the principal's, (c)
the entire existence of the agent is like himself of the principal.
Afterwards, there is yet a fourth level
[and since the principal is the Nasi of our generation, whose name is Yosef,
whose conduct was in the manner of "a good eye, he shall be blessed" –
he certainly invested into the agency also the fourth (highest) level]:
It is not that the agent becomes like himself of the principal,
but rather he is the very existence of the principal himself,
as the Rashba writes
(as discussed many times,
and many times at length)
regarding that which is said about a slave: "What a slave acquires, his master acquires" –
it is not the interpretation that first the slave acquires the item and afterwards his master acquires it from him,
but rather the master acquires it from the outset,
because the slave has no independent existence,
but rather he is the existence of his master,
consequently, as soon as the slave receives the item,
the master acquires it.
The emissary must however have the caution not to change his mission,
if he, heaven forbid, changes his mission he ceases to be an emissary,
and it is obvious –
the reality of the sender ceases;
ווערט אויס מציאות המשלח;
on the other hand however –
if he fulfills his mission according to the will of the sender,
he is an emissary with the full force,
to the extent that a person's emissary is like himself literally,
he is literally the sender himself,
up to the fourth level mentioned above,
and consequently he has the power to make another emissary
(an emissary appoints an emissary)
etc. to carry out the mission of spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings
(even to)
the outside.
A question arises by the emissary:
He is after all flesh and blood,
and he has a body,
"which in its materiality is comparable to the bodies of the nations of the world" –
he is afraid and he does not know how he will be able to direct himself
(exactly)
to carry out the will of the sender,
not to deviate from it etc.?
They answer him:
Through the fact that he will conduct himself in the manner of "Be wholehearted with the Lord your God",
and he decides to overcome the temptations of the evil inclination from within and the obstacles and hindrances from without –
then it is certain that he will direct himself to the will of the sender,
For "I do not ask [of them] except according to their power",
he has certainly been given the powers to carry out the mission in its completeness,
to direct himself to the will of the sender,
even though one is a soul in a body. And on the contrary:
The sender did not choose an angel to do the mission,
but specifically the Jew, and as he is a soul in a body –
consequently he has certainly ensured that he should have the powers to carry out the mission,
to direct himself to the will of the sender in its perfection and fullness,
even to the extent of "as is proper for him to do",
and –
און –
at length.
And as the Nasi of our generation
(the sender)
said that it only needs to be "their standing ready, all of you",
for it is already prepared. And as mentioned,
conducting oneself in the manner of "Be wholehearted with the Lord your God" –
one has all the blessings and success and good wishes
(in worldly language).
Our leaders and Nesiim wanted and gave powers that everything should be fulfilled in perfection. This also includes –
that one should fulfill the mission of our leaders and Nesiim with joy and a good heart,
as one sees tangibly that when one does something,
in our case –
carrying out the mission of spreading Judaism and spreading the wellsprings outward –
with joy and a good heart,
with contentment,
it contributes to perfection in the action.
That –
fulfilling the mission with joy and a good heart –
also has a connection with the portion that is now read at Minchah, Shabbat
(time of the ratzon of ratzon)
Parshat Vayetze:
Continuing from "And Jacob went out from Beersheba and went to Charan",
it says "And Jacob lifted his feet",
Rashi explains
(and at greater length in the Midrashim):
"When he was informed of the good tidings etc. his heart lifted his feet and it became easy for him to walk".
So too in our matter –
the mission of our leaders and Nesiim:
What better good tidings are there –
than the promise of our leaders and Nesiim to all their emissaries,
that they will succeed and they will receive all blessings and successes etc.
Consequently it certainly affects the emissary that "his heart lifts his feet and it becomes easy for him to walk" and he goes to fulfill his mission with joy and a good heart,
knowing that he has all these promises and good tidings,
and knowing that he is a person's emissary who is like himself literally,
he is the reality of the sender,
he certainly fulfills his mission with joy and a good heart.
And one may add to this regarding the hint:
"Emissary" has the numerical value of "joyful",
and one can explain the meaning:
The true essence of the matter of the emissary is –
that he is "joyful":
Not that one compels him
(and in his feeling –
that one forces him to nullify his self and his existence to the sender)

(as was emphasized at the beginning of their shlichus)..
Not to be administrators. And since they were chosen as shluchim,

and they will have no complaints against him and he will have no complaints against the Rosh Yeshiva and administration.

This Shabbat there also occurs a "meeting" that "Tzirei Agudas Chabad" has arranged. And in connection with this, several points will now be discussed:
It was discussed earlier
(Siman Dalet)
that every Jew draws down secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner,
and draws this down "outside" –
by lighting the Chanukah candles
(whose concept is)
"at the entrance of his house from the outside".
That is, regardless of who the Jew is and how much he knows and on what level he stands etc. –
at the time he lights a Chanukah candle, this is connected with secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner.
So a question can arise for a Jew who has not yet reached a high level in Judaism:
He is only at the beginning of learning the first "tractate" of Judaism,
and certainly he has not yet reached "mehadrin min hamehadrin" in Judaism –
so how is it demanded of him and what connection does he have to do such a lofty thing connected with secrets of secrets of the Torah and moreover –
in a miraculous manner?!
It is a matter of the opposite of righteousness and honesty –
"hypocrisy"
(in the vernacular) –
that he should do a thing which he does not hold by,
and he only imitates another! He does not want to be a "hypocrite."
They tell him:
Every Jew has inherited the entire Torah,
as it is written "Torah was commanded to us by Moses, an inheritance for the congregation of Jacob." And in inheritance there is no difference who the heir is,
whether he understands what he inherited or not –
it does not affect that he is the owner of what he inherited. And an inheritance has no cessation,
so if he inherited it, it remains his forever,
and no one can touch it.
As we see even in the laws of the state regarding inheritance:
When someone inherits a factory
(a manufacturing plant),
to distinguish,
it makes no difference whether he understands how the factory works or not –
it is his thing. Even if he does not know that he inherited it –
it does not affect that he is the heir.
Even if he does not want the thing he receives by inheritance –
it is his. Only afterwards can he give it away,
but initially it passes to him as an inheritance.
Similarly,
(to distinguish)
regarding "Torah was commanded to us by Moses, an inheritance for the congregation of Jacob":
Since every Jew inherits the entire Torah,
and an inheritance has no cessation,
it makes no difference whether he understands everything written there or not –
it is his inheritance. Even if he does not know that it is his inheritance –
the lack of knowledge does not change the reality that he is the heir.
And the inheritance of every Jew is from the entire Torah. Not only "I am the L-rd your G-d",
but the entire Torah,
including everything that a distinguished student will innovate in the future
(which is all a part of Torah),
without any distinction between the blessing "Shehakol nihyeh bidvaro" and the deepest secrets of the Torah –
all of it is his inheritance.
Therefore,
even if he is only at the beginning of learning the first "tractate" of Judaism –
when he engages with a matter connected to the deepest secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner
(or with another elevated subject in Torah)
it is not "hypocrisy",
because it is his "heritage",
his inheritance,
so he is not imitating another,
because it is his.
There can only be a difference regarding which subject in Torah he begins with. For example
(to distinguish) –
whether he puts on the hat first or the shoes first,
but they are both his garments.
Similarly with Torah
(to distinguish):
There can be a difference regarding which subject in Torah he begins,
but the entire Torah and all its parts belong to him. And moreover:
Since it is his, he should try to grasp as much as possible at once,
and if he cannot at once,
at least –
one after the other,
because it is all his "assets".
It is only that until now he did not know that it belongs to him,
or he did not know the preciousness of the thing that belongs to him,
and now it was revealed to him;
און איצטער האט מען דאס אים מגלה געווען;
but after it is revealed to him,
it is a revelation not of a new thing,
but of a thing that he already had for a long time,
because he inherited it as soon as he was born.
And now he is in great joy from that which was revealed to him that he has such precious treasures,
so he "grabs" as much as possible from the Torah which is his inheritance,
and it makes no difference what he grabs first,
whether the deepest secrets in a miraculous manner or another part of Torah –
because it is all his.
That which was until now when he still did not know about his precious inheritance –
is lost
(although even then it entirely belonged to him,
because lack of knowledge does not affect inheritance).
But in truth it is not lost –
because the very fact that he did not know of it before,
causes in him a great thirst for the thing
(as explained in Tanya),
and even if he did not know that he is thirsty,
that is an even stronger thirst.
Consequently, it turns out that the very thing that he previously did not know or did not make his inheritance actual,
now causes him to study Torah and fulfill the commandments with greater vigor and strength
(more than the one who always did it).
That is, he still has within himself an advantage over those who are already engaged in Torah and commandments and had the thirst for them.
It is understood that not only does he have nothing to be ashamed of before others,
because of the fact that previously he did not know or did not make his inheritance actual –
but on the contrary:
they can be envious of him,
because of the intensity of his desire for Torah and commandments that is now present with him.
"And give to the wise, and he will become wiser" –
when a wise person,
and especially a person of knowledge,
will take the previous words,
he will be able to explain them further to others,
and thereby influence them,
until in a manner of striking in order to cause to strike,
so that they too will become "lamps to illuminate."
The explanation in Rashi:
When the five-year-old studies the verse in our portion "And her days were fulfilled to give birth" –
a question immediately arises for him:
The Torah has until now told about hundreds of births,
and not once does it say in connection with a birth "And her days were fulfilled to give birth"
(it only says "and she gave birth" to so-and-so, etc.) –
so why suddenly in this verse is a new expression stated –
"And her days were fulfilled to give birth"?
Rashi must answer on the spot the question of the five-year-old when he studies the verse
(and not wait until Parashat Vayeishev).
Rashi answers it by prefacing another question:
"But regarding Tamar it is written 'And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth.'" Why does the verse change, that regarding the birth of Jacob and Esau it says "And her days were fulfilled,"
whereas regarding Tamar it says "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth"?
That is:
Rashi comes here to answer
(not the question of the change in the verses here regarding Parashat Vayeishev,
which is not a question until the five-year-old will study it,
but he comes to answer)
the question of the five-year-old on the spot why it says "And her days were fulfilled"
(unlike in all the births before this in the Torah),
but in order to answer this, Rashi prefaces that there is another question from the change in the verse regarding Tamar,
and based on this one will understand why here it says "And her days were fulfilled."
And the explanation of this:
The Torah wanted to bring out that regarding Tamar the birth was not in full months,
but less than that. Therefore, the Torah makes a change there and writes an unusual expression in connection with the birth –
"And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth,"
in order to emphasize that there the birth was in an unusual manner –
not in full months,
but premature.
But from this alone
(that it says "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth")
it is not necessarily proven that it was premature
(not full months),
because the meaning of the words "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth" is not specifically premature.
Therefore, the Torah needs somewhere else
(where there was a birth in full months)
to write an expression such that when one compares that expression with the expression "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth" one will understand that there it was premature. Therefore, the Torah writes in our portion "And her days were fulfilled,"
the meaning of "And they were fulfilled" is simply – full,
consequently, when one compares the expression "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth" to "And her days were fulfilled,"
it is understood that "at the time of her giving birth" is not full months
(but premature),
"for her days were not fulfilled, for she gave birth at seven months."
It turns out,
that through Rashi explaining the change in language of "And her days were fulfilled" and "And it came to pass at the time of her giving birth," he also answers the question on the spot why here a new expression is stated regarding birth, "And her days were fulfilled"
(which is not stated in all the births before this in the Torah) –
because with this the Torah brings out that "at the time of her giving birth" regarding Tamar means "for her days were not fulfilled,"
for by comparing "at the time of her giving birth" to "And her days were fulfilled" it is understood that the meaning of "at the time of her giving birth" is "for her days were not fulfilled."
According to this, however, it is still not understood:
According to the above, when it says "and her days were fulfilled" in order to bring out that "at the time of her giving birth" means "that her days were not fulfilled" –
it should have been stated at the first birth in the Torah,
or at the birth closest to "and it was at the time of her giving birth" by Tamar,
i.e., at the birth of Er and Onan and Shelah,
and especially since their childbirth
(of Er etc.)
is in the same matter and section as "and it was at the time of her giving birth",
then if there it would have said "and her days were fulfilled" it would have very strongly emphasized that in relation to this "at the time of her giving birth" is lacking. But how does it fit that "and her days were fulfilled" should be stated at the birth of Jacob and Esau
(not in proximity to "at the time of her giving birth",
and not the first birth in the Torah)
in order to bring out that "at the time of her giving birth" by Tamar is lacking?!
So the answer to this is:
It is not the simple explanation that "and her days were fulfilled" is stated at the birth of Jacob and Esau only in order to teach about "at the time of her giving birth" by Tamar,
rather in this there is also a lesson about something else,
i.e., a novel idea in and of itself
(in addition to the lesson from it regarding "at the time of her giving birth"),
therefore it is stated specifically here
(and not at the first birth or at the birth of Er etc.):
Two verses earlier in our portion where it says "and Rivkah conceived" it is told:
"and the children struggled within her and she said, if so, why am I thus, and she went to inquire of the Lord",
"and she said, if so –
great is the pain of pregnancy",
"to inquire of the Lord –
that He should tell her what would be its end".
I.e., that Rivkah had great pain from the pregnancy,
because "the children struggled within her",
"for running,
when she passed by the entrances of the Torah of Shem and Ever, Jacob would run and struggle to come out,
passing by the entrance of idolatry, Esau would struggle to come out".
It is understood from this, according to the one who is five years old in Scripture, that specifically in this pregnancy the Almighty had to have mercy on Rivkah and make that the pregnancy should not be of full months
("and her days were fulfilled"),
rather lacking
(of seven months etc.).
Therefore it is specifically relevant to emphasize the novel thing –
that even though she had pain of pregnancy from "they struggled",
there was "and her days were fulfilled".
Accordingly, the question turns the other way:
If there is a reason in place why here it says "and her days were fulfilled" –
why does Rashi need to come to the explanation of "at the time of her giving birth" by Tamar?
So the reasoning is:
The reason in and of itself
(that "and her days were fulfilled" emphasizes the novel idea that despite the pain of pregnancy, "and her days were fulfilled")
is not sufficient according to the plain meaning of Scripture to explain why here it says "and her days were fulfilled" differently than in the other births in the Torah before this.
True, it says "they struggled" and she had pain of pregnancy –
she had pain,
but this is not enough reason why the Torah changes and writes "and her days were fulfilled". Rather the main reason for this
(that it says "and her days were fulfilled")
is because of the lesson from Tamar
(that there the pregnancy was lacking).
But the Torah did not want to simply place the words "and her days were fulfilled" in a place where it has no explanation in and of itself
(in place),
therefore the Torah placed it here at the birth of Jacob and Esau where the matter is also fitting in the sequence of matters in order to emphasize a novel idea in place
(that despite her pain of pregnancy,
it was "and her days were fulfilled").
According to the above, one will also understand why Rashi does not simply write that by Tamar it was "lacking"
(and by Rivkah "full"),
rather "that her days were not fulfilled, for she gave birth at seven months":
Since "and her days were fulfilled" is stated specifically here
(at the birth of Jacob and Esau)
because it comes to emphasize the novel idea that despite the pain of pregnancy of Rivkah, "and her days were fulfilled"
(and the Almighty did not make her pregnancy be lacking months) –
the novel idea is much stronger when one says that there is a reality of "she gave birth at seven months"
(by Tamar)
and nevertheless by Rivkah it was "and her days were fulfilled" nine months,
i.e., her pregnancy lasted two months longer
(even though she had great pain),
as opposed to if one says that there is only a reality of "lacking",
which can mean a few days less than nine months,
then it is not such a great novel idea that Rivkah's pregnancy lasted only a few more days.
According to this, the question is reversed:
Why does Rashi not emphasize that "and her days were fulfilled" of Rebecca's pregnancy was nine months,
just as he emphasizes that Tamar's pregnancy was "seven months"
(It is certainly necessary to say that "and her days were fulfilled" means nine months. It cannot mean seven months,
because then there would be no difference between "and her days were fulfilled" and "at the time of her giving birth" (which Rashi explains means seven months),
and it cannot mean eight months,
because Rashi knows from the Gemara that a child born at eight months is not viable,
so one must say that "and her days were fulfilled" means nine months)?
And especially since it is indeed stated in Targum Yonatan on the verse "and her days were fulfilled" –
"and were completed two hundred and seventy
(according to Rabbi Akiva)
days of her pregnancy for childbirth."
There is an inquiry whether Rashi saw Targum Yonatan. Regarding Targum Onkelos –
Rashi brings it in many places.
Additionally, he brings from the Yerushalmi,
and it is debated whether this means Midrash or Targum Yerushalmi. But Targum Yonatan he does not bring,
therefore one wants to say that Rashi did not have it.
In any case, even if Rashi did not have this Targum Yonatan –
he nevertheless knew what is stated in the Gemara in Niddah that "pregnancy in gematria is two hundred and seventy-one."
[This is not a contradiction to what is stated in Targum Yonatan (on "and her days were fulfilled" –
"and were completed two hundred and seventy days of her pregnancy for childbirth",
and not 271 days),
because Targum Yonatan speaks about 270 complete days,
including the 270th day,
in its language –
"and were completed two hundred and seventy days",
"and her days were fulfilled",
in contrast to "two hundred and seventy-one" in the Gemara which does not include the 271st day],
And since Rashi knew from the Gemara –
the question becomes:
Why does Rashi not explain that "and her days were fulfilled" means pregnancy of nine months,
271 days
(just as he explains that "the time of her giving birth" means "seven months")?
The answer to this is:
The Gemara says "a woman does not conceive and give birth except at two hundred and seventy-one days or two hundred and seventy-two days or two hundred and seventy-three days." Consequently, Rashi does not want to decide what "and her days were fulfilled" of Rebecca was,
271,
272 or 273 days
(if a decision is applicable in this matter),
therefore he does not write how many days "and her days were fulfilled" are
(as Targum Yonatan writes,
or as the Gemara says the gematria of "pregnancy" –
271).
And one could elaborate on all this,
but this is not the place and this is not the time.
The explanation in the note on the Zohar:
In the note he explains
(as above)
that the "two kids of goats" that Isaac ate on Passover eve
("at that time it was Passover eve")
and through this Jacob received the blessings of Isaac –
are "corresponding to the Passover sacrifice and the Festival sacrifice of Passover." And in addition, these "two kids of goats"
(that Isaac ate on Passover eve)
are corresponding to the two goats of Yom Kippur,
"Rabbi Yehudah said: here is a hint that the children of Jacob are destined to offer two goats, one for Hashem and one for Azazel on Yom Kippur..
And thus the two kids of goats and from both of them Isaac tasted and ate"
(as discussed above that according to all opinions, Isaac's blessing and the eating of the kids were on Passover eve,
only in this very matter there is an additional hint –
that they are corresponding to the two goats of Yom Kippur),
and he explains in the note the connection between Yom Kippur and Passover.
And based on this
(that Isaac ate the kids of goats on Passover eve (corresponding to Passover and the Festival sacrifice),
and they are also corresponding to the two goats of Yom Kippur,
and being corresponding to the two goats of Yom Kippur, "from both of them Isaac tasted and ate" on Passover eve) one could say,
that the elevation in this is like the elevation of Purim relative to Yom Kippur:
It is stated in Tikkunei Zohar that "Yom HaKippurim" is "K-Purim." And it is explained in Chassidus the concept in this:
In order to accomplish the matters that are accomplished on Yom HaKippurim –
one must come to afflictions and fasting etc. –
negation of the body.
However, on Purim one accomplishes the same matters through eating, drinking, and physical feast,
until "a person is obligated to become intoxicated on Purim until he does not know." Which proves that on Purim there is a greater drawing down and from a higher place than on Yom HaKippurim,
since one can draw down the same influences not through negation of the body and physicality,
but through physical eating, drinking, etc.
That is, the advantage of transformation –
one does not negate the body,
but one transforms the body so that through the body itself one should draw down the influences.
And corresponding to this, it could be said that the advantage of eating the Paschal sacrifice
(over Yom HaKippurim) –
is the advantage of transformation:
It is explained in the Sages, may their memory be for a blessing, that they brought a lamb for the Paschal sacrifice
(in the Passover of Egypt),
because the idol of the Egyptians was a lamb,
the Jews slaughtered the idol of the Egyptians and from it brought the Paschal sacrifice,
"Draw forth and take,"
"Withdraw your hands from idolatry etc.,"
to show that they use the idol of the Egyptians specifically to bring a sacrifice to God –
the concept of transformation,
and not only that they brought it for a sacrifice,
which is also a wonder,
but they also ate it,
and moreover –
the Paschal sacrifice "did not come initially except for eating" *191 –
the ultimate concept of transformation.
Corresponding to the aforementioned superiority of Purim,
that through eating and drinking one draws down that which on Yom HaKippurim one draws down through fasting.
And it could be said that this is also the superiority of that which Isaac ate the "two kid goats" on the eve of Passover,
corresponding to the Paschal sacrifice and the festive offering,
and being also corresponding to the two goats of Yom HaKippurim, "from both of them
(from the two kid goats)
Isaac tasted and ate" –
the superiority of transformation,
that specifically through the tasting and eating of the "two kid goats" by Isaac is accomplished that which on Yom HaKippurim is accomplished through fasting
(negation of the body)
and the offering of the two goats
(one for God and one for Azazel) –
the nullification of the accuser,
and transformation to holiness and blessing and atonement for Israel.
And therefore,
the preparation to receive the blessings of Isaac was specifically through that which Jacob brought him the "two kid goats" and Isaac ate from them –
because specifically through the superiority of transformation
(which Isaac ate from the "two kid goats" corresponding to the two goats of Yom HaKippurim)
one accomplishes a most elevated drawing down –
the blessings of Isaac
(similar to the drawing down of atonement and blessing for Israel through the offering of the goats on Yom HaKippurim),
as is explained in Chassidus the greatness of the superiority of these blessings,
until children, life, and ample sustenance, and in all of them ample,
and they come from Isaac whose concept is the intensification of vitality *192,
which comes specifically through transformation.
The concept in the service of man:
In service there are two orders:
The order of afflictions and fasts –
negation of the body. The order of "you shall surely help him" –
service in refining the body through eating, drinking, etc.,
until –
transformation. And both are orders according to Torah,
also the path of afflictions is a path according to Torah –
as we see it on Yom HaKippurim,
that then there must be afflictions etc.
That is, that in the totality of the service of man there are times and situations when the order of service of refining the body is appropriate,
and times and situations when the service of negation of the body is appropriate.
This, however, was all spoken of in the generations before the Baal Shem Tov:
But after the Baal Shem Tov and the totality of the inner dimension of the Torah,
revealed –
that "He has made everything beautiful in its time" –
that the totality of the order of service must be specifically in the manner of "you shall surely help him,"
not through afflictions of the body etc.,
but service with the body,
transformation –
this is the order of service that must now be emphasized among Jews in the manner of "the perpetual offerings in their order."
And may it be His will that through the totality of the service of man,
our deeds and our service,
in the time of exile we will accomplish transformation in the totality of the concept of exile –
that one transforms the falsehood of the world into
(falsehood letters)
"board,"
the boards of the Tabernacle,
and the stones in the Holy Temple,
of the third Holy Temple,
"the Sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have established,"
in the true and complete redemption,
speedily in our days, literally.
It was spoken earlier
(with the help of Heaven)
in connection with the "gathering"
(by "Tzach" - Youth of Agudas Chabad)
that takes place this Shabbos,
that one must know that Jews are the richest heirs,
because each one of them inherited the entire Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings,
with the highest matters in Torah,
even the secrets of secrets of the Torah in a miraculous manner
(the matter of the Chanukah lights).
And through the fact that a Jew utilizes the rich property that he possesses –
"If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments" –
he receives all matters also in physicality,
that is, he becomes rich also in physicality –
"and I will give your rains in their time",
as is known the explanation
(and see from the Baal Shem Tov) on this,
that "your rains" refers to all physical matters,
"and I will give peace in the land".
Until "and I will lead you upright –
with an erect posture",
that is, that every Jew decides to live a Jewish life openly,
with pride –
"with an erect posture" and "with a high hand".
In order to connect the "gathering" with a physical thing –
they will give liquor for the "gathering".
Similarly –
in continuation of what was discussed above in connection with the gathering of emissaries, they will give liquor also for that gathering.
And this should be a close preparation for the day that "will be entirely liquor",
in the true and complete redemption through our righteous Moshiach,
and He will build the Holy Temple in its place,
speedily in our days, literally.
His Holy Honor the Rebbe gave a bottle of liquor to R. Y.C. may he live for the "gathering". And to R. L.B. may he live for the gathering of emissaries may they live.
Afterwards he began to play the melody of the Hakafos of his father of blessed memory.
Afterwards he said:
Those who need to make a final blessing,
will certainly make a final blessing.
After the afternoon prayer he began to play "He will build the Holy Temple etc.".
