English translation 1
This is the Shabbat that comes immediately after the 7th of Marcheshvan,
This is the Shabbat that comes immediately after the 7th of Marcheshvan,
whose significance of the 7th of Marcheshvan is
(as has already been written 1 and printed) 2,
that then "the last of Israel reaches the Euphrates River" 3,
and as the Shach 4 writes
(and is alluded to in the Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch 5)
that "every time that Israel would ascend for the pilgrimage they could not reach their homes after the pilgrimage except after fifteen days, and it was considered for them as if they were still in the Land of Israel occupied with the matters of the pilgrimage as long as they had not crossed the great river, the Euphrates River."
And this matter comes down into an actual law 6,
that the request for rain in the Land of Israel begins from the 7th of Marcheshvan,
"fifteen days after the festival",
not "immediately after the festival" –
"so that the last of Israel who ascended for the pilgrimage should reach his home at the Euphrates River, which is the most distant inhabited place from Jerusalem, and the rain should not detain him." And this law applies also in the present time
(when there is no pilgrimage),
as the Alter Rebbe writes there.
Based on this –
that the request for rain begins on the 7th of Marcheshvan
(because then "the last of Israel who ascended for the pilgrimage has arrived at the Euphrates River") –
there is a resolution to a well-known inquiry:
There is an inquiry regarding the definition of the concept of "boundary" 7
(boundary in place or boundary in time)
whether it has a connection to within the boundary or to outside the boundary. For example, the boundary of the Land of Israel –
boundary in place –
whether it is a part of the Land of Israel or of outside the Land.
And likewise there is this inquiry regarding a boundary in time.
From this, that on the 7th of Marcheshvan one begins the request for rain
(and not on the 1st of Marcheshvan),
and the 7th of Marcheshvan is a boundary in time between the time when "they are still occupied with the matters of the pilgrimage" and the time when each one of Israel arrives at his place –
it is understood,
that the boundary itself
(the day of the 7th of Marcheshvan)
is connected with the second side of the boundary,
which pertains to the time when each one of Israel is already in his place
(and the concept of "occupied with the matters of the pilgrimage" ends on the 7th of Marcheshvan).
From this it is also understood that on the 7th of Marcheshvan begins the concept of "and Jacob 8 went on his way" 9 in the utmost perfection,
because only then does one completely transition from the state of "occupied with the matters of the pilgrimage" into the service in his way,
in the world.
And as has been discussed many times 10 that in "and Jacob went on his way" there are several levels:
The beginning of "and Jacob went on his way" is at the conclusion of Yom Kippur
(as explained in Chassidus,
and particularly from the Rebbe Maharash 11),
because until Yom Kippur it is an elevation from below to above,
and at the conclusion of Yom Kippur begins an effusion from above to below –
"and Jacob went on his way".
And it is also emphasized in this that Yom Kippur is connected with the concept of Torah –
then the latter tablets were given 12,
which are the primary tablets connected with the Giving of the Torah,
because they have permanence,
and after Yom Kippur
(at the conclusion of Yom Kippur)
begins the service of the commandments in the festivals:
The concept of Torah in relation to commandments is analogous to "Israel" in relation to "Jacob":
"Israel" is "the head is mine" 13 and "Jacob" is connected with heel and foot 14.
And likewise is the difference between Torah and commandments,
that Torah is connected with head and commandments are connected with actual deed,
the concept of heel and foot.
It follows,
that on Yom Kippur which is connected with Torah,
one is still at the level of "Israel"
(Torah),
and only at the conclusion of Yom Kippur when the service of the commandments begins,
does one come to the level of "Jacob"
(commandments) –
"and Jacob went on his way",
which is connected with heel and foot and going on his way in the world,
which in general is the service of the commandments specifically in worldly matters.
Afterwards there is a further level in "and Jacob went on his way" which begins at the conclusion of Simchat Torah 15:
With Simchat Torah the festivals of the month of Tishrei conclude,
therefore,
at the conclusion of Simchat Torah,
begins the service of "and Jacob went on his way" –
going out into the world
(away from the festivals)
and there performing the service of refining the world.
Afterwards there is yet another further level in "and Jacob went on his way" –
which begins when one goes out of the month of Tishrei and enters the month of Marcheshvan:
Although the festivals of the month of Tishrei conclude with Simchat Torah,
the festivals have an influence and effect also afterwards,
until the end of the month of Tishrei:
Because the month is "abundant in festivals"16, one does not recite Tachanun "until the end of Tishrei"17,
and only in the month of Cheshvan does one begin to recite Tachanun.
Consequently, it is understood that the true concept of "and Yaakov went on his way",
away from the festivals of the month of Tishrei into service in the world –
begins when one enters the month of Cheshvan.
And as is also hinted in the names of the months –
Tishrei and Mar-Cheshvan:
"Tishrei" in letters is "Reishit"18,
the concept of the head,
similar to "Yisrael" –
"Li rosh"
(not "Yaakov").
"Mar-Cheshvan" –
"Mar" from the term drop,
as the language of the verse19 "mar midli"20,
which means –
a drop of water. And the reason why the month of Mar-Cheshvan is so named is because then the rainy season begins21.
Now the concept of rains indeed comes from heaven,
but this instills awe and dread etc.
And it is connected with plowing and sowing,
which are a contradiction to the concept of Torah,
as Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said22 "Is it possible that a person plows at the time of plowing and sows at the time of sowing etc., what will become of Torah?" It is seen from this that Mar-Cheshvan,
whose concept is rains etc.,
is connected with the world,
and within the world itself –
with action in the world,
the activity of man in the world
(plowing and sowing etc.).
Now the concept of action in the world is connected with "Yaakov",
eikev and regel.
It follows from this that in Tishrei,
Reishit,
"abundant in festivals" –
is the service of "Yisrael",
and in the month of Mar-Cheshvan,
connected with rains and plowing and sowing and service in the world –
begins the service of "and Yaakov went on his way",
the service in worldly matters.
Afterwards one arrives at the ultimate perfection of "and Yaakov went on his way" –
in the month of Mar-Cheshvan itself, on the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan:
Until the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan,
until the Jews had not crossed the Euphrates River in order to arrive at their homes,
"Hashem considers them as if they are still in the Land of Israel occupied with the matters of the Festival",
consequently one is still then engaged in the service of the matters of the Festival in the month of Tishrei
(Reishit),
the concept of "Yisrael";
דער ענין פון "ישראל";
only on the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan does every Jew arrive at his place and the service of "and Yaakov went on his way" begins,
the service connected with eikev and regel,
actual action in this lowest world, below which there is no lower.
That is, there are two levels in the service of man:
The level until the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan,
when it is the service in the matters of the Festival,
in the month of Tishrei, letters of Reishit,
the month "that is sworn23 and satiates etc."24,
i.e., a most elevated service in which one has special powers from Above from the Supernal One to perform the service. Afterwards there is the order of service that begins from the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan –
the service in worldly matters,
which is primarily connected with the activity of man in the world.
And as mentioned above,
in general this is the difference between Torah and mitzvot:
Torah is connected not with the world
(and on the contrary –
plowing and sowing are a contradiction to Torah etc.),
but with the Supernal One:
Torah is "the word of Hashem",
"from the heavens He made you hear His voice"25,
and "words of Torah do not receive impurity"26 etc.
However, mitzvot are specifically with worldly matters,
and for this the descent of the soul into a body below in this world is necessary.
Since "the world He placed in their heart"27, these two concepts exist also within a Jew: (a)
the head within him –
which is connected with "Yisrael",
"Li rosh",
the service of Torah,
the connection to the head. And (b)
the eikev and regel within him –
which is connected with "Yaakov" from the term eikev,
the service of fulfilling the mitzvot in actual action.
And in time, these two concepts are expressed –
in the month of Tishrei and in the month of Mar-Cheshvan:
The month of Tishrei is the service of "Yisrael",
in the matters of the Festival;
בעניני הרגל;
and the month of Mar-Cheshvan,
and within it itself –
primarily from the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan,
is the service of "Yaakov",
"and Yaakov went on his way",
in worldly matters.
And even though the service of "and Yaakov went on his way" in the world
(which begins primarily from the 7th of MarCheshvan)
is a descent relative to the service in the month of Tishrei which is "abundant in festivals",
and as the general concept of the service of mitzvos is connected with a descent relative to service in Torah,
because in order to fulfill mitzvos there must be a descent of the soul into the body,
and this is a descent according to the Torah of truth,
like the verse in the Torah28 "we went down, we went down",
and not only one descent but two descents –
Nevertheless, there is the principle that a descent is for the sake of an ascent,
therefore the descent in the month of MarCheshvan
(primarily from the 7th of MarCheshvan)
is for the sake of an ascent,
even a twofold ascent,
corresponding to "we went down, we went down"
(two descents) –
"I will surely bring you up"29.
Furthermore:
It is not merely an ascent but only within the order of the chain of descent itself which comes from the Name Havayah,
rather "I will surely bring you up" – an ascent in "Anochi" which is higher than "Havayah Elokecha"30.
And since immediately at the beginning of the descent in the service on the 7th of MarCheshvan a Jew thinks about the ascent that will result from it –
then, in the place where a person's thought is, there he is *30,
he stands immediately at that time in the place of the ascent.
Afterwards, when the Shabbos after the 7th of MarCheshvan arrives, the "And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their host"31 of the 7th of MarCheshvan is realized:
All matters connected with the service of "and Yaakov went on his way",
the descent into the world,
which begins on the 7th of MarCheshvan,
are then elevated in a manner of delight,
"You called it a delight of days"32,
According to the explanation of the commentators that "delight" is the concept of pleasure,
and "called" refers to the Above. And in addition to this, there is the added delight of Shabbos
(more than the delight of Shabbos in its own right,
through "You called it a delight of days")
through the service of man –
"and you shall call the Shabbos a delight"33,
"one who delights in the Shabbos"34,
in the manner that a Jew generally adds on Shabbos through "Remember the Shabbos day" and "Guard the Shabbos day",
as has been discussed at length many times.
It follows that on the Shabbos after the 7th of MarCheshvan, there is an additional aspect in the ascent that comes through the descent in the service of "and Yaakov went on his way" on the 7th of MarCheshvan:
In addition to the general concept that the descent on the 7th of MarCheshvan is for the sake of an ascent,
and since in the place where a person's thought is, there he is,
he stands
(immediately at the beginning of the descent)
in the place of the ascent –
at the time when Shabbos arrives afterwards, the ascent is actualized
("And they were finished")
of the 7th of MarCheshvan,
"I will surely bring you up",
and an ascent in a place where there is nothing above it –
delight,
as the well-known statement from Sefer Yetzirah35 "there is nothing above delight".
And particularly in the determination of this year,
when one enters from the 7th of MarCheshvan directly into Shabbos,
without any interruption of weekdays between them,
one has immediately at the beginning of the descent in the service of "and Yaakov went on his way" on the 7th of MarCheshvan –
the ascent in delight,
meaning that one begins immediately to perform the service out of delight.
From this it is understood that when a Jew enters the 7th of MarCheshvan to begin the service of "and Yaakov went on his way",
which is a descent into the world,
not like the elevated state in which he stood in the month of Tishrei,
and additionally, on the 7th of MarCheshvan is the beginning of service in the world and "all beginnings are difficult"36 –
he has nothing to fear,
because he certainly has the strength to perform the service,
for "the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him"37.
That is:
It is true that beginning from the 7th of MarCheshvan, the service and action of man begins
(not service by the power of the Holy One, blessed be He, from above,
like the service of the month of Tishrei),
but in the service and action of man itself, he has the help of the Holy One, blessed be He.
As is evident in the Sages' statement itself "the Holy One, blessed be He, helps him":
This does not speak about the action of the Holy One, blessed be He,
or about the action of man as he is a partner with the Holy One, blessed be He,
both being equal,
but rather about the action of man,
and "the Holy One, blessed be He –
helps him".
And consequently,
although beginning from the 7th of MarCheshvan man descends in his service in the world,
he certainly has the strength to perform the service. And on the contrary –
the descent is for the sake of an ascent to a most elevated place,
and this ascent he has immediately at the beginning of the service.
And particularly since from the 7th of MarCheshvan one enters directly into Shabbos,
whose essence is an ascent in delight.
And since immediately at the beginning of the service one has the strength to perform the service even though "all beginnings are difficult"36 –
it opens and breaks through the way that so should be the service in the world throughout the entire year.
Based on the above –
then until the 6th of MarCheshvan the order of divine service is connected with an efflux from Above
(like the matter of Torah,
the word of Hashem)
and on the 7th of MarCheshvan the service from below begins through the action and work of man in the world
(like the service of the commandments) –
we have some explanation of what is stated in the Zohar at the end of Parshat Shemot
(in the “additions” that are printed there (and there are many matters there).
Just as in the entire Torah there are additions,
so too in the Zohar) 38:
“From Elul until the sixth day of MarCheshvan and no more…
he who participates with them will succeed
(success in Torah and in other matters)
for these days are days of letters etc.”:
It was said above that until the 6th of MarCheshvan inclusive one is still in the most elevated state of the month of Tishrei,
because until then “it is considered for them as if they are still in Eretz Yisrael occupied with the matters of the Festival”. And only on the 7th of MarCheshvan does the descent into worldly matters begin
(therefore one then begins asking for rain),
and as discussed
(section 2)
(ס"ב)
the 7th of MarCheshvan itself is related to “outside the boundary”. And so we see here also in the Zohar that “until the sixth day of MarCheshvan” the days are “days of letters”.
And one may say, in a possible manner, the explanation of that which “From Elul until the sixth day of MarCheshvan…
he who participates with them will succeed, for these days are days of letters” –
based on the explanation of the Alter Rebbe regarding the matter of the month of Elul:
From the fact that the Zohar does not say that the “days of letters” are the days of the month of Elul and the month of Tishrei and also MarCheshvan until the 6th of MarCheshvan,
but rather “from Elul until the sixth day of MarCheshvan”,
it is understood that it is not speaking about a particular matter in the month of Elul and Tishrei,
but rather about one point in which all the days from Elul until the 6th of MarCheshvan are equal.
One will understand what this one point is
(from Elul until the sixth day of MarCheshvan)
by understanding the point of the month of Elul:
The Alter Rebbe explains in Likkutei Torah 39 the point of the month of Elul,
that then is “the time of the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy”,
and he explains this with a parable of a “king in the field”:
“A parable: a king, before his arrival in the city, the people of the city go out to meet him and receive him in the field, and then anyone who wishes is permitted to go out to greet him etc.,
and when he goes to the city, they walk after him,
and afterwards, when he enters his royal palace, none may enter except by permission etc.,
and so it is, by way of analogy, in the month of Elul: one goes out to greet the light of His countenance, may He be blessed, in the field etc.”
That the matter of the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy in the month of Elul, like the parable of a king when he is in the field –
is connected with the matter of letters
(“letters”):
The true place of a king is not in the field,
but rather in the inhabited city,
in the “city of the great King” 40,
and there itself, in the king’s palace,
and there itself, in the king’s chamber. There must also be a field,
because “the earth from which bread comes forth” 41,
and consequently there must be a people in the field,
and “there is no king without a people” 42,
the king must come to the people in the field. But the place of the king,
who is a human being,
is in the inhabited city,
in the king’s chamber. Consequently, in order to bring the king out of his chamber into the field, one must have the matter of letters
(“letters”),
as is known 43 that letters are from the term “morning has come” 44,
that they bring a matter from its place to a second place,
i.e., that the true place of that matter is not in this place, and letters bring it from its place to this place.
Based on this, one may say, in a possible manner –
on the foundation of what is stated in the Zohar that “from Elul until the sixth day of MarCheshvan…
he who participates with them will succeed, for these days are days of letters” –
that the Zohar innovates further
(beyond what is stated in Likkutei Torah),
that the matter of the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy, like the parable of a king in the field
(which is effected through letters,
letters)
is not only in the month of Elul,
but also the entire month of Tishrei until the 6th of MarCheshvan,
because in these days there is the matter of “letters”,
letters that bring the king into the field,
and because of this, in these days there is greater success in Torah etc.
And this interpretation of the Zohar is stated as a possible and doubtful manner –
because it is a very great novelty:
According to the explanation in Likkutei Torah there, it emerges that the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy in the manner of "the King in the field" is only in the month of Elul. And also in the month of Tishrei,
which follows and is connected to the month of Elul,
it is simply understood that then there is a revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy,
and on the contrary –
in an even more elevated manner than in the month of Elul,
as is understood from Likkutei Torah there, that on Yom Kippur the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy is in the manner of "the King in His palace."
And accordingly, it is understood regarding the rest of the month of Tishrei
(from Yom Kippur until the end of the month),
that then there is still a connection to the revelation of the elevated matters of Yom Kippur and the month of Tishrei,
because Tachanun is not recited the entire month of Tishrei. But afterwards, in the month of Cheshvan, seemingly this matter does not exist.
However, according to the Zohar –
which says that "the days that are coming" are "from Elul until six days of Cheshvan,"
as one point –
it is understood
(according to the explanation in Likkutei Torah of the point of the month of Elul) –
that the revelation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy in the manner of "the King in the field" is from the month of Elul until the 7th of Cheshvan.
[And although this is a great novelty,
it is founded upon what is stated in the Zohar and according to the explanation in the inner dimension of the Torah after the Zohar (Likkutei Torah of the Alter Rebbe),
for the inner dimension of the Torah is "Torah is light" (in the Torah itself),
it illuminates all matters in the Torah. Known is the difference between the revealed aspect of Torah and the inner dimension of Torah (as explained in the Zohar45) that the revealed aspect of Torah is called "the body of the Torah" and the inner dimension of Torah –
"the soul of the Torah." And the difference between the soul and the body is:
In the body, the soul is not revealed,
but the soul not only constitutes and animates the body,
rather it illuminates the body,
which is even more than constituting and animating the body,
as is also simply understood].
And the elevation explained in the Zohar until the 7th of Cheshvan does not contradict what is explained in the revealed aspect of Torah
(and as also explained above)
the elevation on the 7th of Cheshvan –
because,
as discussed above:
from Elul until the 7th of Cheshvan are "the days that are coming,"
consequently there is then success in Torah, etc.
However, on the 8th of Cheshvan the service in the world begins,
"And Yaakov went on his way" in this lowest world, below which there is no lower.46 And on one hand, it contains within itself an even greater elevation than the elevation of the days from Elul until the 7th of Cheshvan,
because a descent is for the sake of an ascent,
as above.
A Jew must always add something from his own –
therefore, even though there is the elevation on the 8th of Mar-Cheshvan
(when the service in this lowest world begins, and a descent is for the sake of an ascent),
there comes an additional elevation on the fifteenth of Mar-Cheshvan,
when "the moon stands in its fullness"47 of the month of Mar-Cheshvan,
consequently then is the perfection of the month of Mar-Cheshvan,
because the matter of the month is connected to the moon,
as the statement48 "the moon has no year at all,
just as the sun has no month at all"
(as was discussed at length previously49),
consequently "the moon stands in its fullness"
(the perfection of the moon)
indicates the perfection of the month.
Therefore, this is the place to note –
that if for some reason the matters regarding which it was spoken50 that they should be completed by the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan were not finished and completed –
there is still time until the 15th of Mar-Cheshvan to finish and complete them,
with all the explanations in perfection.51
And particularly since this year the 15th of Mar-Cheshvan is also the day of Shabbat, just like the 7th of Cheshvan,
the day after the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan
(because if the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan is Shabbat, then the 15th of Cheshvan is automatically also Shabbat),
it also contains within itself the elevation that all these matters are done from within delight.
Today, however, is the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan, not the 15th of Mar-Cheshvan –
one must speak about the virtue of this day.
It was said earlier that this year it is the day of Shabbat,
when all the matters of the 6th of Mar-Cheshvan and the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan are elevated,
for there is virtue in this and virtue in that
(as above),
and they are elevated up to delight.
In addition to this elevation in the determination of this year that the 7th of Mar-Cheshvan enters directly into Shabbat –
there is also the elevation in the day of Motza'ei Shabbat –
that it is on the sixth day:
The sixth day of Ma'aseh Bereishit contains within itself the elevation relative to all the other days –
that it is the only day regarding which it is stated52 "And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good."
And the "very good" is not only related to the works of the sixth day,
but related to the works of all six days of creation –
"And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good" 53.
Regarding each of the six days of creation it says "And God saw that it was good",
until even regarding the second day 54 there is a "good",
because of which the third day had "good" doubled in it in order to complete the good that is not stated on the second day <sup>55</sup>;
וואס דערפאר איז יום השלישי הוכפל בו כי טוב בכדי צו משלים זיין דעם טוב וואס שטייט ניט ביום השני 55;
but the innovation of the sixth day is that then it states
(regarding all six days of creation)
"And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good",
as is known that "very" refers to the evil inclination
(as explained in Chassidus 56).
And the superiority in this is even more:
This does not speak about "very" as it is among created beings,
like "with all your might" 57 which means "your might",
the evil inclination according to the capacity of the created being 56,
because among created beings the true essence of the matter of the evil inclination 56 is not applicable –
rather "very good" in relation to the good
(simple)
that "And God saw" in all six days of creation,
i.e., "very good" with the Creator
("God") –
from this it is understood that it is the true evil inclination
And to this it is said here that "And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good",
that the "very good" is connected with the sight of the Supreme One
("God"),
as is known the superiority of sight even of a human being,
to the extent that it effects,
how much more so the sight of a human being effects for good or for the opposite of good,
as our Sages, of blessed memory, said 57 "He set his eyes upon him and he became a pile of bones, etc.",
all the more so that the sight of the Supreme One
("God")
effects.
From this is understood the superiority that comes on the 8th of MarCheshvan in this year, being on the sixth day.
On the other hand, a superiority comes to the sixth day when it is also the 8th of MarCheshvan:
Regarding the entire matter of the creation of the world about which it says on the sixth day "And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good" –
it says in the Midrash 58 on the verse 59 "which God created to do –
to rectify",
that the intention in "which God created to do" is,
that a person through his service should accomplish the "to rectify" in the creation.
But on the sixth day of the days of creation –
the matter of "to do –
to rectify" through the service of man is not emphasized on that day.
However, when the sixth day coincides with the 8th of MarCheshvan,
whose subject is
(as above)
the beginning of the service and action of man in the world,
"And Jacob went on his way",
and since "their end is embedded in their beginning", immediately at the beginning of the service on the 8th of MarCheshvan all the service until the end of the service is included –
therefore on that day the purpose of creation is openly emphasized –
"to do, to rectify".
May it be His will that we utilize the time and auspicious day of this Shabbat immediately after the 8th of MarCheshvan
(the sixth day in this year)
to accept good resolutions in all matters of service with the intention to bring them down into actual deed,
and from this there should be a continuous effect upon the entire year,
that it should be a blessed year,
to perfection in all details,
until the true perfection –
the true and complete redemption,
when it will be "and we shall do 60 before You etc. as Your commandments of Your will" 61 –
which commandments are connected with the service and action of man
(as above) –
the perfection of the Torah and its commandments,
together with the perfection of the people,
"with our youths and with our elders etc. with our sons and with our daughters" 62,
together with the perfection of the land,
and the perfection of the perfection of the land –
"Hashem your God will enlarge your border" 63,
also the ten nations including the Kenite, the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite as it says in our parshah and in Rashi 64,
and speedily in our actual days,
in the language of the Rambam 65 "immediately they are redeemed".
In addition to the aforementioned advantage in the determination of this year that the 8th of MarCheshvan enters directly into Shabbat,
without any interruption between them,
in the manner of the matter of "immediately they are redeemed" –
there is an additional advantage in this Shabbat, that it is Shabbat of Parshas Lech Lecha.
The connection and relationship between Parshas Lech Lecha and "And Jacob went on his way" is simply:
"Lech" means to go on a path,
and "And Jacob went on his way" means to go on a path.
And the addition of "Lech" is –
as the continuation of the verse:
"Go for yourself from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house",
as the explanation of this is explained in Chassidus 66,
that this means to go away from your will,
emotions and intellect.
And since this is stated in the Torah in the sense of instruction67,
and it is "an inheritance of the congregation of Yaakov",
the inheritance and possession of every Jew,
it is understood that from this there is a lesson for every Jew,
even for simple people
(for whom the Torah is also their inheritance) –
that "and Yaakov went on his way" must be in a manner of "Go for yourself from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house",
departing from one's own will,
attributes, and intellect.
If only it were that among "your heads, your tribes" it would be as understood as among simple people...
An alarming matter:
For some time now, it has been necessary to complete explanations in Chassidus,
which, naturally, should have taken to prepare at most –
like a few hours,
a few days,
a few weeks –
and nevertheless, there is no reason, cause, or explanation why this drags on and keeps dragging on for several years already,
and it is not completed!
He was given the merit and possibility to do this and to complete it,
so that when it is completed it will be a complete thing,
and not only complete from now onward,
but the complete thing will also bestow completeness upon the earlier parts. And furthermore, one knows how great is the responsibility of one who begins a mitzvah –
they say to him, "Finish!"67 –
nevertheless, this keeps dragging on without any reason,
even from the perspective of his animal soul,
and it is not completed...!
(Lacking).
The question arises:
How is it possible? How does it happen that a matter which should take no more than a few days drags on for years on end?!
He was given a merit-based judgment from Adam HaRishon:
It is stated in the words of our Rabbis, of blessed memory68, that if Adam HaRishon had restrained himself for three hours and not eaten from the Tree of Knowledge,
not only would he have been permitted to eat from the Tree of Knowledge,
but he would have made Kiddush on the wine from the grapes of the Tree of Knowledge.
Now, since we know about this
(from the words of our Rabbis, of blessed memory),
Adam HaRishon certainly knew about it,
nevertheless, he could not restrain himself for those three hours and fulfill the command of Hashem...
From this is understood the merit-based judgment for the aforementioned, and all the more so, and how much more so:
If Adam HaRishon, who was the handiwork of the Holy One, blessed be He69,
and was created not like a one-day-old infant,
who first receives an evil inclination,
"my fast preceded [my birth]"70,
and only at thirteen years receives a good inclination70,
but he
(and Chavah)
was created immediately as a twenty-year-old71,
he immediately had also the good inclination –
nevertheless, he did not withstand the test and could not fulfill the one and only command to restrain himself for three hours from eating from the Tree of Knowledge –
then all the more so can such a thing happen now,
to one who is not the handiwork of the Holy One, blessed be He and is not created as a twenty-year-old!
(Lacking a bit).
He was given the merit-based judgment from the conduct of Adam HaRishon until the end of all generations,
also regarding the aforementioned matter,
because Adam HaRishon opened the path not for the better in this conduct.
It is not a matter of finding fault with Adam HaRishon,
and especially since I descend from him just as all the children of Noach and the children of Israel descend from him –
but when it comes to a matter that can add to fear of Heaven,
one may repeat a matter that is stated explicitly in the Torah.
Consequently, he indeed has a merit-based judgment from Adam HaRishon. Regarding the reckoning –
he indeed receives all good in this world and the World to Come,
310 worlds72
(Lacking a bit),
But this is all regarding reward;
אבער דאס איז אלץ בנוגע צו שכר;
however, regarding the actual doing of the thing itself –
there is a principle in the Torah that "we do not say [it is] as if he did [it]"73
He indeed has the "taforo" and the "flacho" –
but it must be "taforo da flacho",
the actual deed...
Why indeed could Adam HaRishon not restrain himself? Only three hours –
Adam HaRishon,
the handiwork of the Holy One, blessed be He,
should have restrained himself –
nevertheless, he could not do it...
Because the evil inclination,
knowing that the test of whether Adam HaRishon would wait those three hours was such a fundamental matter –
applied all its powers so as not to allow Adam HaRishon to refrain for those three hours from eating from the Tree of Knowledge.
So too regarding the aforementioned:
Since it is a matter that time compels that one should complete the explanations in Chassidus,
explanations according to Chassidus,
and this is his matter of time that compels –
the evil inclination stands opposed with all its powers:
The one who needs to complete the matter –
does not occupy himself instead with plowing and sowing,
rather he occupies himself with other matters of Torah. He is among the masters of Torah,
a learned man,
and occupies himself with other good things.
Consequently,
the evil inclination comes to him and confuses him not with a candy,
or with fatty meat, aged wine, and the like,
because that would not take him away –
rather he pushes him toward another matter in Torah,
which, however, is not the matter that time compels that he needs to do and complete!
And as discussed many times, like the matter is in the laws of halachic ruling:
When one asks a rabbi two questions,
one question in a matter that time compels and the second in a matter that is not so time-compelling –
he must first answer the matter that time compels –
Nevertheless, he finds other good things to do first which are not time-compelling,
and pushes off the matter that time compels.
Indeed a good thing, etc., etc.,
but do your matter –
your matter must be completed.
(Missing).
If we have spoken about this so many times and it has not helped,
why do we speak about it again now?
This is because there is a principle in Torah, "Do not despair, etc." Consequently, even though we have already spoken about it and it has not helped,
we speak again,
and perhaps, maybe it will effect some movement.
(Slightly missing).
Why does one speak about an individual in public?
Because the matter pertains to each one in his service:
Each one has in his service matters that time compels which it is possible to push off and not complete immediately.
For since it is a matter that time compels,
which is very pertinent to do now –
the evil inclination comes and pushes him toward all kinds of things in order to confuse him from doing what he needs to do.
And this pertains to each one,
from "your heads, your tribes" to "your woodcutters" and "your water drawers."
So too regarding those who occupy themselves with the neighborhood where the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, lived the last ten years of his life in this world:
It is a matter that time compels for the activists in the neighborhood to establish
(from the term establishment)
the neighborhood and to secure various matters that occur there.
Nevertheless, it is not done! And the situation is diminishing and going...
And it is entirely beneath reason and understanding, even of the animal soul, why it is not done:
All connections and powers were given,
and there are merits with several other things,
more than the connections, etc., that one has in other neighborhoods –
and nevertheless, here one cannot secure things that one secures in other neighborhoods!
We are no longer speaking about enlarging the neighborhood,
we are no longer speaking about expanding the neighborhood,
which even naturally the neighborhood could have been for praise and glory,
but we are no longer speaking about that –
we are speaking about the establishment of the neighborhood!
And nevertheless, it is not secured,
and in a manner beneath reason and understanding,
even of the activists themselves,
even of their evil inclination,
rather they incite their own evil inclination in matters that would not have occurred to it at all
(as discussed many times the explanation74 in "For the sin that we sinned before You with the evil inclination")...
And this did not begin yesterday evening,
rather the situation has been like this for more than three years!
And that the neighborhood is in the state it is now and not further, etc. –
is also only in the merit of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the leader of our generation...
And the main point is –
there is no opening of a mouth or a whisper!
There are rabbis,
the seven good men of the city,
activists,
and those who do not refrain from inciting another...
And nevertheless, no one does anything about it.
With all kinds of excuses:
This one claims that he cannot do,
that one will not be listened to anyway,
this one does not work, etc.
From this we return to the aforementioned instruction:
Since he is a rabbi,
an activist, and the like –
his matter that time compels is to arouse regarding the state of the neighborhood, that something be done about it.
And there is no need to elaborate on a distressing matter,
and moreover –
a frightening matter...
So too
(as mentioned)
regarding each one,
from "your heads, your tribes" to "hewers of your wood" and "drawers of your water" –
that he has matters which are his thing that is required of the time that he must do or complete.
He argues:
It is understandable regarding "your heads, your tribes",
a Torah scholar,
a public activist,
a communal person and the like –
he understands how much his doing matters;
פארשטייט ער וויפל ס'איז נוגע זיין טאן;
but he is a private individual?!
They tell him:
The Rambam75 rules regarding every individual "each person must see himself as... and likewise the entire world as half meritorious...,
he performed one mitzvah, behold he tipped the scale for himself and for the entire world to the side of merit and brought salvation and deliverance to himself and to them".
Consequently –
"Doloi" private individual!
Even when it speaks about "drawers of your water",
he also has matters that are required of the time that he must do,
and which are relevant to the public. As discussed many times that the "drawer of your water" brings water for every Jew so that he can begin all his service during the day,
immediately after he awakens from sleep
(after "Modeh Ani"),
with washing negel vasser,
and afterwards washing before the morning meal,
and he brings him water to wash before praying in the synagogue etc.
And the Torah further states a principle76,
that "even the chief of the water-drawers is appointed from heaven" –
consequently he has the task from heaven,
it is relevant that he should fulfill it,
and he certainly has the power to do it.
And regarding each and every one,
there are certainly matters that are required of the time that he can complete,
and he does not do it.
The intention of this talk is:
Each one should afterwards go and take five minutes to consider truthfully his standing and situation,
and not do it to fulfill an obligation,
because I spoke about this now,
consequently one does someone a favor,
but truly truthfully –
he will find matters that he needs to complete and finish.
And one must know,
as mentioned,
that there is the evil inclination that wants to hinder each one from carrying out his thing that is required of the time –
both the "drawer of your water" from doing his work,
and the activist who needs to secure the foundation of the neighborhood,
and "your heads, your tribes" in their matters,
and the one who needs to publish the Chassidic discourses.
And since there is the evil inclination that wants to hinder the work,
one must stand against it and not allow it.
One indeed has a justification from the Holy One, blessed be He,
but we do not say like one who does [nothing] –
one must have the matter in actuality.
One should not think that it will be like Chizkiyahu said77 "I will sleep on my bed",
and the Most High will take care of the matter:
regarding Sancheriv outside Jerusalem –
the Most High indeed takes care of him,
but regarding the "Sancheriv" within him,
the Most High wants that he himself should take care of it,
at least with a small finger,
and then the Most High will help to take care of it entirely.
He only needs to begin doing in it,
there must be the "Lech Lecha from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house" –
the Most High will then help that there should be a continuation,
until he will finish the matter.
One has indeed spoken about this presumably a hundred times and one,
said once,
a second time until a hundred times and one,
and it did not help
(as above) –
nevertheless "do not despair etc.",
one repeats it a hundred and two times –
perhaps it will be effective.
He argues:
It is understandable when he was young one could demand this of him –
but now he is already old and worn out,
and he has already learned much Torah,
and raised students and students of students,
and has many and luminous good deeds78?
On this there is the instruction from the well-known story that my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, told79
(in connection with Parshas Vayeira, which we begin reading today at Minchah)
about the Tzemach Tzedek and his grandson,
the Rebbe
(the Rebbe Maharash) of blessed memory,
when he was still a small child,
and apparently even younger than five years old:
The Rebbe of blessed memory, as a small child, once entered the Tzemach Tzedek on Shabbos Parshas Vayeira and cried out, saying:
Why did the Almighty reveal Himself to Avraham Avinu,
"And Hashem appeared to him"80,
but to us He does not reveal Himself. The Tzemach Tzedek answered him:
"When a Jew is a tzaddik,
and at ninety-nine years old he decides that he must circumcise himself,
then he is worthy that the Almighty should appear to him."
Although Avraham Avinu was a chariot to the Almighty even before his circumcision,
as it says in Tanya81 that the Patriarchs were a chariot82 "all their days",
with him there was already the service of "and the souls they made in Charan"83 etc.
Nevertheless, when Avraham was already ninety-nine years old, he circumcised himself.
For circumcision is not merely an addition to his previous service,
but a great innovation and a great addition in his service.
And therefore the Almighty appeared to him only then –
"And Hashem appeared to him."
This story my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, told,
publicized and ordered it to be printed so that from it there should be a lesson for every individual.
True, the story is about a small child,
and the Tzemach Tzedek explained it to him in his language,
but the matter is certainly correct and certainly a lesson for every individual,
even for adults,
because if not, it would not have been told. And let each person understand in his soul how the story relates to him.
My revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, did not tell it and order it printed so that it should become another story in "Likkutei Dibburim" and the like,
and that one should put it on the shelf and from time to time take it down from there and look at it and say:
Aha! A tasty story,
a wonderful saying,
a matter...
Rather, he told it and publicized it for generations by printing it so that from it there should be a lesson for generations:
That I should not think,
since he is already old he cannot innovate,
and especially since he has already learned much Torah etc.,
rather, as we see by Avraham Avinu that being ninety-nine years old and until then he was a chariot and innovated much in Torah and good deeds –
nevertheless, he then decided to circumcise himself! And therefore only then was –
"And Hashem appeared to him"!
And this is understandable even to a small child,
to the point that he cries:
Why does the Almighty not reveal Himself to us as He revealed Himself to Avraham Avinu. He wants that the Almighty should reveal Himself to him like "And Hashem appeared to him" to Avraham Avinu,
and "now". And he immediately asks:
Let them tell him what more he needs to do so that the Almighty should reveal Himself to him?...
With a child, it is simply understood that when one gives him a "taporu" it is so that it should be "taporu da flachu",
consequently, when one gives him a "taporu" –
he chops! But with an adult, one must come to a deliberation,
and one must inform him that "study is greater because it leads to action"83,
and specifically then he does the deed.
And as mentioned above,
one must have the deed in actuality.
And although until now there was a different conduct –
there must be "Lech Lecha from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father's house",
and "Yaakov went on his way",
to go away from the previous conduct and habits. For when there is no "Lech",
one remains in "your father's house".
And when there is the going,
then the Almighty helps in the going,
as it was by Yaakov –
"And Yaakov lifted his feet",
"When he was informed with the good news that he was promised protection,
his heart lifted his feet and he became light to walk"84.
Thus85, and the matter of delight, "and you shall call the Shabbos a delight", to a delight that permeates the body and physical matters,
May the internal confusions be nullified,
and may one have the individual redemption,
as the Rambam says that through "one mitzvah",
one deed,
he tips the scales not only for the world but also for "himself" to the side of merit "and brings him and them deliverance and rescue".
And through this, the confusions of the general exile are also nullified,
and one brings "deliverance and rescue" to the entire world –
the true and complete redemption through Mashiach our righteous one,
and below ten handbreadths in this lowest world, beneath which there is no lower,
in a manner of "taporu da plachu",
as it must be the actual deed of man,
"taporu da plachu".
And speedily, in our very own days.
Discourse (in the form of a talk)
Beginning "Ani hinei brisi itach" etc.
It is also customary to study a verse from the weekly portion with Rashi's commentary,
and a matter from the notes of the Tatte on the Zohar of our portion.
In our portion, chapter 17, verse 5, it states that the Almighty says to Avram:
"And your name shall no longer be called Avram, but your name shall be Avraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations."
Rashi quotes from the verse "for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations"
(also the word "for",
because his explanation is connected to the reason why he is now called "Avraham" –
"for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations"),
and explains:
"An acronym of his name,
and the 'reish' that was in it initially, that he was a father only to Aram, his place, and now he is a father to the entire world. And even the 'reish' that was in it from the beginning did not move from its place,
for even the 'yud' of Sarai complained before the Shechinah until it was added to Yehoshua, as it is written86 'And Moshe called Hoshea bin Nun Yehoshua'."
One must understand:
A) It is understandable simply, even with the intellect of a five-year-old studying Scripture,
that if one removes a letter from the name of a tzaddik,
that letter has a complaint –
so why does Rashi need to bring a proof that the 'reish' of Avraham must remain
(because if not, the 'reish' would have a complaint)
from another place,
from the 'yud' of "Sarai"?
B) Furthermore:
The proof that Rashi brings from the complaint of the 'yud' of "Sarai" that the 'reish' of "Avram" must remain –
is seemingly a proof to the contrary:
The 'yud' of "Sarai" was actually removed from the name "Sarah",
and it was only returned hundreds of years later to "Yehoshua",
furthermore:
The change of the name Sarah and the change of the name Yehoshua were in two separate periods
(conducts,
attributes;
מדות;
a thousand years)*:
The change of the name Sarah was in the time before the exile of Egypt,
but after the decree of the Covenant Between the Parts regarding the exile,
and the change of the name Yehoshua –
in connection** with the entry into the Land;
בקשר ** מיט ביאת הארץ;
so what kind of proof is this for the 'reish' of "Avram" which "did not move from its place" in the name "Avraham"?!
C) In the proof that Rashi brings from "Sarai" he writes "for even the 'yud' of Sarai complained etc." What the word "even" simply means is that regarding the 'yud' of "Sarai" there is less reason for it to have a complaint than the complaint that the 'reish' of "Avram" would have had if it had been removed. It is not understood:
The reason for the complaint of the 'reish' and the 'yud' is seemingly the same –
because one removes a letter from the name of a tzaddik –
so why does Rashi write "for even the 'yud' of Sarai complained etc.",
as if the 'yud' has less reason for complaint?!
D) Rashi gives an explanation only where one needs to arrive at it. And if the matter is understood simply, Rashi does not explain it
[as it is stated explicitly in Halacha:
The Alter Rebbe writes in his Shulchan Aruch, section 285, in the Kuntres Acharon,
that there are verses that "Rashi does not explain due to their simplicity,
and similarly in every verse there are many words on which there is no Rashi because they are not needed"].
But a matter that requires an explanation,
Rashi explains the first time.
Accordingly,
since Rashi explains in this verse the reason for the name "Avram",
because he was a "father" to "Aram",
it is seemingly understood that this is a matter that is necessary according to the simple meaning. So why did Rashi wait to explain this until our verse, and did not explain it to the five-year-old the first time he learned about the name "Avram"?
All these precise points must be understandable to the five-year-old simply on their own. And as will be explained further.
In the notes of the [Tatte] father on the Zohar at the conclusion of Parshat Lech Lecha,
and also in the notes –
which are at the end of the notes of our parshah,
it discusses a matter connected with the end of the exile:
In the Zohar of our parshah, he concludes87:
"Rabbi Yosi said, it is written88, 'Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, etc.,
the Holy One, blessed be He, is destined to proclaim concerning His children and say: Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you, the glory of Hashem shall gather you in.'"
The commentators of the Zohar
(in Or HaChamah)
question the connection of this conclusion with what was stated previously in the Zohar regarding the restrictions connected with the study of the inner dimensions of the Torah, so that it should remain in concealment and hiddenness:
Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said, "We decree that this Torah
(the wisdom of Kabbalah)
shall be revealed in Babylon,
and they shall be exiled in Babylon among the comrades,"
"meaning that even there
(in Babylon)
they will not be together, but scattered among them, so that each one may study in private"89,
and Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said to Rabbi Abba:
"Because the matters are revealed among them so much,
they shall be exiled among the comrades, they shall learn those ways, and the matters shall be concealed within them,
for the matters are not revealed except among us, etc."
And they answer89 that the conclusion is "to conclude with consolation."
That is, that this has no connection with what was stated previously,
rather, since there he speaks about exile and the restrictions and warnings regarding the study of the inner dimensions of the Torah –
he concludes with consolation,
in the well-known language –
concludes with good.
The [Tatte] father, in his notes90, also questions the connection of the conclusion of the Zohar with what was stated previously,
and he says:
"This is connected here,
it is because it was stated previously that the matters shall be concealed within them, etc.,
that now the secrets and mysteries of the Torah are in concealment and hiddenness...
behold, in the future the secrets and mysteries of the Torah will be revealed, etc." And in general, this is connected with "May your springs spread forth outward"
(as will be explained below).
That is:
According to the commentators of the Zohar, the conclusion of the Zohar in Parshat Lech Lecha is only a matter of consolation and good in general,
not related to the content of the matter stated previously in the Zohar.
However, the [Tatte] father adds that the conclusion with good itself is in that same matter about which it speaks earlier in the Zohar:
Earlier it speaks about the fact that the secrets and mysteries of the Torah will be in concealment and hiddenness,
and he concludes with good in that same matter –
that "Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, etc." –
"in the future the secrets and mysteries of the Torah will be revealed."
For in the future itself, there will be several good matters,
for example, as the Rambam writes at the end of his book,
that then there will be "no envy and competition" and the like –
but in the conclusion of this Zohar, the matter of good is relevant to what was discussed previously regarding the restrictions on the inner dimensions of the Torah.
However, the [Tatte] father does not explain how the matter is in the "avdah avditei" of the service of man to serve his Master91 or to minister to his Master92,
and as will be explained below.
Here is the place to continue what was previously discussed regarding "the main thing is the deed" in connection with the 10th of MarCheshvan –
that on this Shabbat which comes after the 10th of MarCheshvan, one should accept good resolutions with the intent to bring them down into actual deed regarding all the matters about which was spoken.
And particularly since we are standing on this Shabbat itself –
at the time of Minchah,
for until then the Shabbat still has a connection with Parshat Lech Lecha,
and from Minchah onward, when we begin reading Parshat Vayeira,
it has a connection with the following parshah.
Therefore there is an opinion
(as the Alter Rebbe brings in his Shulchan Aruch93)
that one must finish reviewing the weekly portion of this Shabbat before Minchah,
because "since the congregation has begun another parshah, the time of this one has passed."
And at the time when we are standing on Shabbat itself at the time of Minchah, there is even more power to accept good resolutions with the intent to bring them down into actual deed –
because then it is a time of favor,
therefore we say during Minchah of Shabbat "And as for me, may my prayer to You, Hashem, be a time of favor, O God, in Your abundant kindness"94,
as explained in Chassidus
(in the discourses of the Rebbe (the Maharash) of blessed memory95 and elsewhere96)
the difference between Minchah of Shabbat and Minchah of a weekday,
that although during Minchah of a weekday it is the opposite of a time of favor,
rather a time of gevurot and then the twenty-four courts of judgment are aroused,
during Minchah of Shabbat the twenty-four courts of judgment are transformed, etc., as it states in the Zohar97.
This is not a contradiction to the virtue of Minchah of a weekday,
as our sages said98, "A person should always be careful regarding the Minchah prayer, for Elijah was not answered except during the Minchah prayer, as it is said99, 'And it was at the time of the Minchah offering, Elijah approached and said, etc., answer me, Hashem, answer me, etc.'"
That the Minchah prayer of Elijah was simply on a weekday
(not Shabbos Minchah),
as is evident from the fact that the Minchah prayer was connected with Elijah's offering on Mount Carmel,
and it is emphasized100 that at that time there was a hora'as sha'ah regarding the matter of offering a burnt-offering outside [the Temple]. If the offering was then on the day of Shabbos,
it would have been necessary to emphasize even more,
that the hora'as sha'ah was that Elijah could offer a sacrifice on Shabbos,
for this is a greater novelty than the hora'as sha'ah of offering outside [the Temple],
because offering on Shabbos involves several labors,
and especially in the offering of Elijah which involved additional labors,
bringing water, etc.
Furthermore:
It is simply understood that if Elijah could have corrected the matter of "hopping on two branches"101
(which he then did through the offering and Minchah prayer, etc.)
on weekdays –
there is no place for him to postpone it until Shabbos!
Thus there is no contradiction to what was discussed regarding the superiority of Shabbos Minchah over weekday Minchah –
because:
In the manner that all matters of prayer on weekdays are drawn down and receive power from the prayers on Shabbos102
(as we say "Today is the first day of the week",
"Today is the second day of the week"),
for Shabbos is the aspect of prayer –
so too regarding weekday Minchah,
that the elevation in this is drawn down and influenced from Shabbos Minchah which is a time of favor.
Therefore one must still seize the remaining hours of the auspicious time,
Shabbos Minchah after the 7th of MarCheshvan –
to accept good resolutions in order to bring them down into actual deed –
and a good thought the Holy One, blessed be He, joins to deed103 –
in all matters of Torah and mitzvos,
and out of joy and goodness of heart,
as the Torah instructs104 "you shall serve Hashem your G-d with joy and with goodness of heart",
And especially to add to and complete all the matters that were spoken about to do until the 7th of MarCheshvan,
including also the gatherings.
And as was written to someone who asked
(on this Shabbos eve)
what should he do if he could not arrange a gathering –
that he was truly an ones according to Torah –
that one can complete the gatherings until the fifteenth of Cheshvan,
when "the moon stands in its fullness".
And especially since on this Motza'ei Shabbos is the first opportunity to sanctify the moon,
as explained in Kabbalah105
(and known is the remark106 about this in the Siddur107)
that one should sanctify the moon seven days after the molad,
and it is stated in several places108 that it is proper to do it on Motza'ei Shabbos –
so on this Motza'ei Shabbos both things come together,
it is seven days after the molad and Motza'ei Shabbos,
And after this Motza'ei Shabbos the moon continues to grow,
going and increasing,
and so it is understood regarding Jews who are compared to the moon,
until the fifteenth of the month when "the moon stands in its fullness".
Therefore it is fitting that until the fifteenth of the month one should complete and finish making the gatherings,
and so too the other matters about which it was spoken that they should be done until the 7th of MarCheshvan.
The gatherings contain many virtues
(as discussed above, a part of them):
(a) Through this Jews become united together. (b)
A gathering helps that the good resolutions which one makes in a public gathering should come down into actual deed because they all made it together,
as explained in the discourse "Prepare yourselves from among you men"109, and (c)
As our Sages, of blessed memory, said110 a gathering of tzaddikim –
"and Your people are all tzaddikim"*110 –
is "a pleasure for them and a pleasure for the world"
(or "good for them and good for the world",
like the two versions111 and interpretations on this).
And added to all this, a gathering has yet another great elevation:
It is stated in the Midrash112 "It is written113 'When you cry out, let your gathered ones deliver you',
it was taught: his gathering
(of Yaakov)
and the gathering of his sons saved him from the hand of Esav."
The matter in avodah:
Commentators114 ask on the language of the Midrash "his gathering and the gathering of his sons",
for seemingly it should have said "his gathering with his sons"? And it is explained,
that there were two gatherings:
The gathering of Yaakov himself,
through his prayer,
which prayer is a matter of gathering,
"for the essence of prayer is submission, the gathering of the limbs and powers into the heart"114.
And correspondingly, the well-known story that the Rebbe, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, told114 about his grandfather
(after whom he was named),
that he promised that he would pray with a minyan. Afterwards, the one to whom he had promised saw that he was not praying with a minyan,
they asked him:
How is it possible,
he had promised? He answered:
He is waiting and seeking to make a minyan and gathering and congregation within himself,
by gathering together his own ten powers of the soul!
Afterwards, Yaakov also gathered his sons and his wives.
Therefore it says "his gathering and the gathering of his sons":
first the gathering of himself through prayer,
and afterwards the gathering of his sons.
And in addition to this, there is in this the explanation:
Yaakov first made a gathering within himself and ensured that his generation would have salvation. And afterwards he also ensured that in his sons in the generations thereafter, there should be the matter of gathering and the salvation through it.
From this there is also the instruction for each and every one in connection with the matter of gathering:
First and foremost, one must make a gathering of himself,
and afterwards one must also effect upon others that there should be a gathering in them.
And through this one ensures both regarding oneself
(through the gathering of oneself)
and regarding others around him
(through their gathering) –
that there should be "they will save you",
since one has "in your distress, your gatherings" –
as per the ruling of the Rambam75 that through the fact that "he performed one mitzvah, behold he has tipped the scales for himself and for the entire world to the side of merit and caused salvation and deliverance for himself and for them".
Until that through this matter of gathering
(himself and others)
he fulfills "in your distress, your gatherings will save you" in the most elevated manner:
According to the explanation of the Midrash on "in your distress, your gatherings will save you", one sees a great wonder:
The verse in its context
(in Yeshayahu)
speaks about an undesirable matter115. But here in the Midrash, they interpret the verse regarding Yaakov concerning a matter of ultimate good –
that through the fact that in Yaakov there was "in your distress, your gatherings", there was "they will save you",
he was saved from the hand of Esav.
That is, according to the explanation of the Midrash, there is revealed here a transformation from "in your distress, your gatherings will save you" in the profane to "in your distress, your gatherings will save you" in holiness:
The simple explanation of "in your distress"
(as it says in Yeshayahu)
is –
איז –
a cry,
shouting. But according to the explanation of the Midrash
("his gathering and the gathering of his sons saved him from the hand of Esav")
the explanation of "in your distress" is –
"an expression of gathering,
like 'and he gathered' etc."
(as explained in the commentators on the Midrash116).
That is, that through this matter of gathering in holiness
(as Yaakov did)
one brings about that instead of "in your distress" with the explanation of a cry,
shouting, weeping and fasting,
"diminishing his fat and blood" –
it should be transformed through "in your distress" an expression of gathering to the service of "you shall surely help him",
even with the material of the body which is "your enemy"
(according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov117),
the opposite of the matter of fasts and afflictions and crying etc.
From this one sees the greatness of the matter of the gatherings which were aroused that one should make until the 7th of MarCheshvan. And if for some reason one was not able to make them until then –
one can complete and finish them until the 15th of MarCheshvan.
And so too regarding all other matters which one needed to do during the month of Tishrei,
and for some reason one has not yet completed and finished them,
and there remain "remnants" that one still needs to do –
one can do them until the 15th of the month.
And actually,
even if one performed the service during the month of Tishrei in completeness,
certainly "remnants" remain which one can still complete and finish.
As it says in the Midrash118 regarding the entirety of the matter of Shemini Atzeres,
that the offering then of one bull and one ram is like a parable "to a king who made a feast for seven days
(the days of Sukkos)
and invited all the people of the province for the seven days of the feast,
when the seven days of the feast passed, he said to his beloved etc. 'let us make do with what we find' etc.,
so said the Holy One, blessed be He, to Israel: 'On the eighth day, Atzeres, shall be for you, make do with what you find, with one bull and one ram'".
And one is precise in this119 that from the Midrash it is implied that the one bull and one ram of Israel on Shmini Atzeret is what is found from that which remained from the seventy bulls that were offered during the seven days of Sukkot.
That is, it is like the remnants of the feast during the seven days of the banquet
(the seven days of Sukkot).
That remnants prove that the feast
(from which the remnants remained)
was a great feast120,
because if no remnants remain,
one cannot know whether it was a great feast or a small one. And on the contrary:
If no remnants remain from the feast, it shows that it was not a proper great feast,
because everything was finished and nothing remained.
As one also sees in halachah –
that for Birkat HaMazon there must be remnants from the feast,
and especially from the bread from which one broke bread for the meal121.
Accordingly, it is also understood regarding the service during the month of Tishrei:
After all the discourse during the time of our joy, there certainly remained "remnants" which one can still conclude and complete.
Consequently, one must now accept good resolutions in order to bring them down into actual deed regarding all these matters.
And may it be His will that Mashiach come even before the conclusion and completion of all these matters,
and he shall bring all Jews to our holy land,
to Jerusalem, the holy city,
to the Temple Mount,
to the Third Holy Temple,
where there will be "Every male among you shall appear before the Lord Hashem"122,
in addition to the general matter of "And the glory of Hashem shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see"123,
And on the contrary –
since the Third Holy Temple comes after the great descent of this final exile,
and a descent for the purpose of ascent –
there will come a great elevation in the pilgrimage festival in the future to come regarding the pilgrimage festival as it was in the First Temple and the Second Temple:
Then the pilgrimage festival was only three times a year
(on the three pilgrimage festivals),
but in the future to come there is the promise that "And it shall be, from new moon to new moon and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to bow down before Me"124,
a pilgrimage festival every month and every Sabbath125,
And speedily in our days, literally.
The explanation in Rashi:
As discussed many times,
every word of the verse that Rashi quotes in a dibbur hamatchil of his commentary is precise. So too in our verse where Rashi quotes the words "ki av hamon goyim":
On one hand, Rashi also quotes the word "ki",
and on the other hand –
he does not quote the last word of the verse "netaticha"
(and does not even allude to it with a "vego'"),
because:
"Netaticha" is entirely not relevant to his commentary
(which he will say further),
but "ki"
(the reason why Avram is now called "Avraham")
is relevant to his commentary,
and on the contrary:
upon it his entire commentary is based:
When the five-year-old previously learned that his name is "Avram", Rashi does not explain the reason why he is called thus –
because the matter of Rashi is the plain meaning of Scripture,
and according to the plain meaning of Scripture there is no necessity to explain a reason for every name in the Torah.
As one indeed sees earlier regarding several names that appear in the Torah and Rashi does not explain the reason for their names,
except when according to the plain meaning of Scripture a particular event occurred with that person or in connection with him that was the reason for his name –
like by Kayin126,
Shet<sup>127</sup> and Noach<sup>128</sup> etc. where a reason is stated in the Torah why they are called thus;
שת 127 און נח 128 וכו' וואס עס שטייט א טעם אין תורה פארוואס זיי ווערן אזוי אנגערופן;
but by Hevel
(even though he was the brother of Kayin)
and Metushelach
(even though he was a great tzaddik,
as the five-year-old previously learned in Rashi*127) –
no reason for their names is stated.
But when one comes to our verse in our parshah and the Torah itself says "And your name shall no longer be called Avram, but your name shall be Avraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations",
the verse itself says that the reason for his name is because
("ki")
"av hamon goyim netaticha".
Therefore Rashi explains how "av hamon goyim" is a reason for the name "Avraham":
"Ki av hamon goyim –
an acronym of his name",
"av hamon goyim" is the acronym of Avraham. In general, an acronym is not a teaching according to the plain meaning,
but since here it is compelled from the verse itself
("ki")
that "av hamon goyim" is the reason for his name –
the acronym in this verse is according to the plain meaning.
And since from this verse it is proven that Abraham is such a person whose name is connected to a meaning
(unlike when it says earlier "Abram",
and likewise the names of Hevel and Methuselah and the other names in the Torah where there is no necessity according to the simple explanation that their name is connected to a meaning)
"for a father of a multitude of nations have I made you" –
it is reasonable to say that also the name "Abram"
(which is similar to "Abraham" except lacking the letter hei)
that he had previously has a meaning,
because if not –
why does the verse "attach" a meaning specifically to the name "Abraham"?!
Therefore Rashi continues and explains the meaning of the name "Abram":
"and the Resh that was in him at the beginning
(which is why he was called "Abram") –
that he was a father only to Aram". And "Abram" is an acronym of "Av" and "Aram".
What is the connection of "Aram" with "Abram",
that specifically to "Aram" he was a "father"? Rashi says:
"for it is his place".
And that which they changed his name from "Abram" to "Abraham" is because "now he is a father to the entire world",
"a father of a multitude of nations",
which "to the entire world" is not applicable to distinguish from one place to another place
(not like it was previously by "Abram" that "he was a father only to Aram which is his place").
With this one topic in this explanation of Rashi concludes.
Afterwards Rashi begins another topic:
"and even the Resh that was in him from the beginning did not move from its place":
According to the above that his name was changed from "Abram" to "Abraham" because previously "he was a father only to Aram which is his place and now he is a father to the entire world" –
it is not understood why the Resh of "Aram" remained in the name "Abraham":
since "Abraham" is now "a father to the entire world",
"a father of a multitude of nations",
in this is also included
(all the more so and certainly) Aram,
which "Aram" is only one place in the entire world,
i.e., the Resh of "Aram" is included
(in the general two hundred maneh)
in the hei of "hamon goyim"
(the entire world),
and one does not need to specify it. Just as one does not specify the other places of the world
(not like the name "Abram" when "he was a father only to Aram") –
now why did the Resh remain
(of "Aram")
in the name "Abraham"?!
This question Rashi hints at with the words:
"and even the Resh that was in him from the beginning did not move from its place". And through this one sees the wonderful precision of Rashi:
The expression "did not move from its place" is unusual,
he should have written "was not taken" and the like.
Rather the explanation in this is:
When one says "was taken" it means that they entirely removed the letter from the name. But in our case in the name "Abraham",
even if the Resh were not in the name,
it would not be possible to say that the Resh "was taken",
because the Resh of "Aram" is included in the hei of "hamon goyim",
therefore Rashi says that "even the Resh that was in him from the beginning did not move from its place",
that a Resh remained in its place as a separate entity
(not like it is included in the hei).
So the question
(as above) –
why did the Resh remain
(of "Aram"),
when it is now included in the hei
(of "hamon goyim")?
Rashi answers:
"for even the Yud of Sarai complained etc.
[as the five-year-old will learn a few verses later that they changed her name from "Sarai" to "Sarah",
the Yud did not remain,
consequently the Yud complained]
until it was added to Joshua as it is said 'and Moses called Hoshea bin Nun Joshua'".
I.e., behold the Yud of "Sarai",
which had less reason to remain in the name "Sarah"
(as is understood from that which Rashi writes "for even the Yud of Sarai etc."),
nevertheless the Yud complained "until it was added to Joshua",
all the more so and certainly the Resh of "Abram",
which has more place to remain than the Yud of "Sarai",
must remain in the name "Abraham". And the explanation in this:
Why does Rashi indeed say "for even the Yud of Sarai complained etc.",
that the Yud of "Sarai" had less reason for complaint than the Resh of "Abram" –
for ostensibly it had more claim than the Resh would have had if they had removed it from "Abram":
Regarding the change of the name "Sarai" to "Sarah",
"you shall not call her name Sarai for Sarah is her name",
Rashi explains:
"that Sarai implies
(language of rulership)
for me and not for others, for Sarah is her name that she will be a ruler over all".
According to this, it is understood that when "Sarai" was called "Sarah" –
the Yud could have a stronger complaint than the Reish of "Abram" would have had if it had not been included in the name "Abraham":
Even if the Reish of "Abram"
(which indicates that he is "Av l'Aram")
had been taken away
("moved from its place") –
the interpretation that "Abraham" is "Av" also "l'Aram" would not be lacking,
because in "Av hamon goyim" "Av l'chol ha'olam",
it is also included that he is "Av l'Aram";
איז כלול אויך אז ער איז "אב לארם";
However, when "Sarai",
"Sarai li",
becomes "Sarah l'chol" –
the Yud can come with a complaint that now
(when she is called "Sarah")
she is indeed "Sarah al kol",
but not "Sarai li",
because there is a rationale to say,
that since Abraham was older than Sarah,
and then
(when "Sarai" was called "Sarah")
an elevation occurred in "Abraham",
he became "Av hamon goyim" etc. –
it is more fitting then not to say "Sarai li".
From this it is seen that the Yud of "Sarai" can have stronger complaints than the Reish of "Abram" would have had. Now why does Rashi say "the Yud of Sarai complained",
which implies that the Yud has less reason for complaint than the Reish?!
The explanation in this is that she is the giver:
When "Sarai" was called "Sarah" it is indeed no longer appropriate to say that she is "Sarai li",
because then Abraham also became older and was elevated relative to his previous state,
and in general he attained a new level
(in addition to that which he was older than Sarah) –
as is understood from what was learned earlier,
and certainly from what will be learned further regarding the level of Abraham:
The Most High then said to him "Ani hineh b'riti itach",
and he became "Av hamon goyim",
which in general is connected with the perfection that was added to Abraham our Patriarch through the covenant of circumcision,
through that which he became a "tamim";
דורך דעם וואס ער איז געווארן א "תמים" 130;
and further it will be learned that "Vatitzchak Sarah
(specifically)
b'kirbah",
but not Abraham,
and that regarding Abraham it says *130 "N'si Elokim atah b'tocheinu" etc.;
און אז אויף אברהם שטייט *130 "נשיא אלקים אתה בתוכנו" וכו';
in addition to the general matter that the five-year-old already learned regarding the relationship of a man and his wife that "V'hu yimshol bach" –
consequently, it is then not appropriate to say that "Sarah" is also "Sarai li".
That is, previously there was indeed a state where she was "Sarai li",
but when Abraham was elevated higher and new and lofty matters came into being in him –
it cannot be said.
From this it is understood that when "Sarai" became "Sarah" this is entirely different from that which "Abram" became "Abraham":
When "Sarai",
on account of the name "Sarai li",
became "Sarah l'chol" –
the interpretation of "Sarai li" falls away;
פאלט אראפ דער פירוש פון "שרי לי";
However, when "Abram" became "Abraham" on account of "Av hamon goyim" "Av l'chol ha'olam",
it is automatically understood and simple that he is also an "Av l'Aram".
Based on this, it is understood why the Yud of "Sarai" has less reason for complaint than the Reish of "Abram":
The Yud of "Sarai"
(which indicates "Sar li")
cannot have any complaint about why it is taken from "Sarai" when she becomes "Sarah l'chol",
because then it is no longer appropriate to say "Sar li". The only reason it can complain is that it no longer has any connection with a righteous woman.
However, "Av l'Aram" was also present when he became "Abraham",
consequently the Reish has a place to be in "Abraham".
Nevertheless, the Yud complained
(only)
because now it no longer has any connection with a righteous woman –
"until it was added to Joshua, as it is said 'And Moshe called Hoshea bin Nun Yehoshua'",
"he prayed for him, 'Y-ah shall save you from the counsel of the spies'" *131.
To insert the Yud into the name "Sarah" –
cannot be done according to the simple meaning,
because then the matter of "Sarai li" is no longer relevant
(as above);
(כנ"ל);
but since there is a place for the complaint that the Yud does not want to lose its connection with a righteous person –
it was inserted into the name "Yehoshua".
The Midrash states that the yud that the Holy One, blessed be He, took from Sarai "was divided into two: five for Abraham and five for Sarah."
According to this, it turns out that the yud initially has no place for complaint.
וואס לפי"ז קומט אויס אז דער יו"ד האט לכתחילה ניט קיין מקום לתרעומות;
But according to the simple explanation, one cannot say this,
because according to the simple explanation, here it is speaking about the letter yud –
so what does it help the yud that two hehs come to it?
Ten hehs could come to it –
so this is also no difference to the letter yud!
It is nothing more than that two hehs have the numerical value of the number yud
(ten) –
but according to the simple explanation, here we are not speaking about gematriot, but about a letter yud].
Rashi brings from this a proof also regarding the reish of "Avraham" –
"And even the reish that was in it initially did not move from its place,
for even the yud of Sarai complained etc. until it was added to Yehoshua etc.":
Now, regarding the yud of "Sarai",
which has no place in "Sarah",
because then she is not "Sarai",
nevertheless it complained because it wants to be in a name of a righteous person,
and therefore "it was added to Yehoshua" –
all the more so regarding the reish of "Avram"
(which relates to "Aram")
which has a place also in the name "Avraham"
(because in "father to all the world" is also included that he is "father to Aram"),
surely it has a place that the reish should remain there in the name of a righteous person.
Through this one sees the great precision of Rashi,
both regarding what he quotes from the verse,
and regarding the content that lies in the word "for even" that Rashi writes,
and also in how through Rashi many matters are incidentally safeguarded,
and among them –
why indeed the reish of "Avram" remained in the name "Avraham" and the yud of "Sarai" did not remain in "Sarah".
According to the above, the explanation according to the simple meaning is understood why the reish of "Avram" remained in "Avraham".
And one should connect this with what is explained in Chassidus:
It was discussed earlier that until "As for Me, behold My covenant is with you, and you shall become a father of a multitude of nations"
(because of which there was a change of the name "Avram" to "Avraham")
there were high souls also among the nations of the world,
but from then on this applies only to Avraham and to the Children of Israel –
"As for Me, behold My covenant is with you",
the drawing down of high souls is specifically "with you",
and therefore from then on it is possible to say that Avraham became "a father of a multitude of nations".
That is, that when the name "Avram" was changed to "Avraham",
it is not the simple meaning that by Avraham all the matters that were previously when he was "Avram" were nullified,
but on the contrary:
The high souls that were from before when he was "Avram"
("father to Aram",
which is his place)
were now drawn specifically to Avraham.
Based on this it is understood why when he became "Avraham",
"father of a multitude of nations",
the reish that was from before remains with him
(being "Avram") –
because then to him
(specifically)
are drawn the high souls that were from before when he was "Avram" with a reish.
And particularly according to what is explained in Torah Ohr on our portion, that "Avram" is "Av Ram",
the intellect that is hidden from all thought. And when he became "Avraham" "father of a multitude of nations", the matter of "Av Ram" was not nullified by him,
the intellect that is hidden from all thought,
but this remained with him
(and it was drawn into the world as explained there),
therefore in "Avraham" there must also be the words "Av Ram"
(with the reish),
therefore the reish remains with him.
The lesson from this in the service of man:
It is stated in Tanya that the Patriarchs bequeath their matters to their children,
every Jew until the end of all generations. From this it is understood,
that the two matters that were by Avraham –
"Avram",
"father to Aram which is his place",
and "Avraham" which was added through his covenant of circumcision,
"father of a multitude of nations",
"father to all the world" –
exist by every Jew:
First and foremost, a Jew must accomplish through his service in his place,
that not only should he not be influenced by the place and the people of the place,
but he should accomplish there,
until the place and the people of the place help him out in his service,
because they feel that he
(the Jew)
is the "father" in this place,
until they should feel that he is "Av Ram",
the intellect that is hidden from all thought.
Afterwards it comes to Jews through the covenant of circumcision –
Which pertains to every Jew,
until that,
one who makes a vow "that I will not derive benefit from the uncircumcised –
it is permitted regarding uncircumcised Jews",
because Jews are "circumcised",
and "no outcast shall be cast out from him".
And all the more so regarding the women and daughters of Israel,
"a woman is considered as if she is circumcised" –
Then he becomes "Abraham",
"father of a multitude of nations",
"father of the entire world" –
and he opens
(not only in his place,
but also)
in the entire world in the aforementioned manner
(as he opens in his place).
And having the order of Lech Lecha –
it becomes "those who come shall Jacob take root, Israel shall blossom and flourish, and they shall fill the face of the world with fruit". From every Jew come forth fruits and the fruits of fruits until the end of the entire world,
and according to the explanation of Chassidus regarding this –
until the end of the concealment and hiding of the world [from the word concealment and hiding].
Thus the order of the continuation of the revelation becomes,
that immediately comes the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach,
speedily in our days, literally.
The explanation in the gloss on the Zohar:
In the Zohar at the end of Parshat Lech Lecha is hinted the order of the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah
(as understood from the Zohar until the order in the gloss of the father on the Zohar):
In the time of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai there were all these restrictions on the study of the inner dimension of the Torah,
that it should be in concealment and in hiding,
and "not revealed"
(the inner dimension of the Torah)
"except among them"
(Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his colleagues)
etc.
Which is also the case in Paris and in Reims, that it is stated in one place in the Zohar that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai revealed only a few secrets, as the disciples suppressed their words in a sealed container,
but then a ruin was made,
and they had to all translate it after the passing of days etc.
This order speaks about the time of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai;
דאס רעדט דער סדר וועגן זמן רשב"י;
but in the future to come,
in "the end of days",
there will be a revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah in the most elevated manner without the restrictions,
and even before that –
at the end of the time of exile –
there was a semblance of this through the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah in the manner of "may your springs spread forth outward". Which can also be seen from the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah,
as explained in the Zohar itself in connection with the verse
(in Genesis 6, 11)
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life etc. all the fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of the heavens were opened":
"And in the six hundredth year of the sixth millennium the gates of wisdom above will be opened and the fountains of wisdom below",
meaning that in the order of the sixth millennium there will be a revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah. Until that comes to the 248 limbs of Mashiach, even the children of the Mishnah and you shall be compelled etc. As it was in actuality,
that beginning from the time of the Ari it became "a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom",
but then itself this was also only for various circles etc.
Afterwards the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah increased further,
until it became a necessity and obligation for this,
until after Petersburg –
the imprisonment and redemption of the old Rebbe –
the main matter of the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah began in a manner of "may your springs spread forth outward"
(as in the famous talk),
and afterwards in the six hundredth year of the sixth millennium this increased further,
and afterwards,
after the imprisonment and redemption of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe in the year 5687 –
the spreading of the springs outward became in the most extensive manner,
and it went and grew and spread more and more.
And at the time when the true and complete redemption will come –
there will be the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah in the ultimate perfection.
And the entirety of this order of the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah
(that in the time of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai this was in concealment and later it becomes revealed,
until in perfection in the future to come) –
is hinted in the Zohar at the end of Parshat Lech Lecha:
By writing about the restrictions in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah before the conclusion in the Zohar of Parshat Lech Lecha –
the Zohar hints that before the end of days,
before "the end of days",
still in the time of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai –
there were the restrictions in the study of the inner dimension of the Torah,
and the study was in concealment etc.
But afterwards the Zohar itself warns by concluding the matter and the portion
(in the Zohar),
that the conclusion of the matter
(like the conclusion of the Zohar)
in "the end of days" is –
"then your light shall break forth like the dawn etc.",
that "in the future the secrets and mysteries of the Torah will be revealed",
and before that at the end of the time of exile –
there was a semblance of this through the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah in the manner of "may your springs spread forth outward".
The Zohar concludes with consolation,
concludes with good –
there is no good but Torah,
and here the conclusion is with "doubled in it that it is good,"
good of good, –
which in Torah
(good,
there is no good but Torah)
itself is good of good
(Torah of Torah) –
the innerness of the Torah,
which is connected with the innerness of the heart,
as explained in the note,
"the circumcision that in the future will be in the innerness of the heart so that the innerness of the Torah will be revealed,
and see in Igeret HaKodesh chapter 44 beginning with the phrase 'Israel is redeemed only through charity,'
see there."
ע"ש".
And the revelation of the innerness of the Torah in the future,
and the entirety of the matter of "may your springs spread forth outward" –
is hinted in the verse "then your light will burst forth like the dawn etc.":
It is explained in the Siddur Shaar HaSukkot regarding this matter that which is stated in the Zohar that "Yaakov said 'then your light will burst forth like the dawn etc.' the other righteous ones said 'and Hashem will guide you always and satisfy your soul with radiance etc.'" –
that "Yaakov is the letters of 'will burst forth,'"
which the matter of bursting forth is connected with a revelation from a most elevated place,
in the manner of the parable of the barrel "when it becomes overly full and cannot contain the filling, it will burst with cracks and fissures and the liquid will go out through there,"
which although certainly the drop that
(which bursts the barrel)
has no comparison relative to the liquid inside the barrel,
but on the other hand –
"there is in this entire matter of bursting an advantage of a quality from another side,
and it is because this bursting comes from the force and intensity of the influence that the vessel cannot contain...
and therefore the root of the going out of this influence that goes out through bursting...
behold it is high in quality also from the bodies of the intellects and lights that settle in the vessel."
And the superiority of the drawing down that comes out in the way of bursting,
that its root is from a most elevated place
(which is why it forces itself out in the way of bursting) –
is also understood from that which "the other righteous ones said 'and Hashem will guide you always and satisfy with radiance'":
The matter of "and satisfy with radiance" is the "intensity of brightness that the vessel cannot contain, because of which the light bursts etc." as explained in various places,
and in brief –
also in Igeret HaKodesh,
that radiance is a level most elevated and there is nothing above it etc.
And it is radiance in the plural form –
pure of pure,
which is the matter
(in Torah)
of secrets of secrets. And specifically from there comes the drawing down of the drops in the way of bursting.
From which it is understood that "then your light will burst forth like the dawn etc." is the matter of "may your springs spread forth outward" –
the bursting and spreading outward of the springs themselves,
the level of radiance,
secrets of secrets.
The lesson from this:
The matter of "Yaakov said 'then your light will burst forth like the dawn,'"
"will burst forth" the letters of Yaakov,
is simply connected with "and Yaakov went on his way,"
which begins primarily from the 7th of MarCheshvan
(as discussed above at length).
One has the lesson from this:
Going out now to do the service each one in his place –
"and Yaakov went on his way" –
one should do in the spreading of the springs outward
(the matter of "then your light will burst forth like the dawn etc. and satisfy with radiance")
in actual deed.
Beginning from that which one spreads and teaches with Jews

(just as the bursting of the drops comes from the radiance).
And through that which they have the springs

they have,
