English translation 1
His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, washed his holy hands for the meal. And afterwards he said:
His Holiness the Rebbe, may he live for many good years, washed his holy hands for the meal. And afterwards he said:
Since this farbrengen is a continuation of the farbrengen of Simchat Torah,
let us now sing "VeSamachta BeChagecha",
and in a manner of ascending in holiness –
with even more arousal than it was sung on Simchat Torah.
And whoever begins is praiseworthy.
After they sang "VeSamachta BeChagecha",
he instructed to sing "Atah Bechartanu".
Simchat Torah is the conclusion and seal of all the festivals of the month of Tishrei,
which are all encompassing festivals for the purpose of drawing them down upon the entire year,
and the drawing down of the encompassing festivals upon the entire year begins primarily at the conclusion and seal of the festivals –
on Simchat Torah –
because "everything follows the conclusion"<sup>2</sup>;
ווארום "הכל הולך אחר החיתום" 2;
and like every conclusion and seal in Torah and holiness,
it is not a true "conclusion",
rather "they attach the beginning to the completion"3,
the conclusion is for the purpose that from it there should be a continuation with greater strength and vigor upon the entire year.
And this is in accordance with the known4 that on Motzaei Simchat Torah,
Isru Chag,
the matter of "And Yaakov went on his way"5 begins,
the service throughout the entire year.
As has been discussed many times6 that in general, "And Yaakov went on his way" begins on Motzaei Yom Kippur –
as explained by the Rebbe Maharash7
(whose concept is "from the outset, go over"8,
and this year is one hundred and one years since his passing);
און השנה איז מאה שנה ואחת להסתלקותו);
but in particular and primarily, the matter of "And Yaakov went on his way" begins on Motzaei Simchat Torah,
when a Jew goes out into the world literally to do his service there,
and he must then begin to "unpack the bundles"9 that he gathered throughout the entire month of Tishrei –
for all the days of the year.
And in the fixed calendar of this year, Motzaei Simchat Torah,
Isru Chag,
falls on the Sabbath day – this adds an even greater elevation in this "And Yaakov went on his way" that begins on Motzaei Simchat Torah:
that this going on his way is not with toil and exertion,
but rather from within delight,
like the manner of service on Shabbat.
And although delight
(of Shabbat)
is connected with a state of rest,
"the Ancient One whose mind is concealed and the brain is concealed and tranquil etc."10
(as discussed above11) –
nevertheless, in this too the matter of going is applicable
("And Yaakov went on his way"),
an ascent from level to level –
similar to the ascents
(going)
during the course of the Sabbath day itself,
a day of rest,
itself:
Along with the fact that the entire day of Shabbat is one point
(a day of rest),
nevertheless, this one point extends over a span of time,
which time is divided into many details –
consequently, during this time there is the matter of ascent from level to level,
in accordance with the command of "ascend in holiness"12.
And in addition to this matter of delight that exists in this "And Yaakov went on his way"
(due to the fact that Motzaei Simchat Torah is the Sabbath day) –
there is also in this the matter of joy13,
as it is written14 "And on the day of your rejoicing –
these are the Shabbatot".
Every word and detail in the Torah is with utmost precision
[even in the Oral Torah,
although there there is no special precision in every word and letter (as in the Written Torah),
like the difference between Mishnah and Gemara,
and in the Gemara itself –
between the Talmud Yerushalmi and the Talmud Bavli.
All the more so the precision in the Written Torah].
From this it is understood that so too regarding the matter of "And Yaakov went on his way",
that every detail and every word in it is with utmost precision
(as has been discussed at length previously15):
"Yaakov went on his way":
The matter of going –
"they go from strength to strength"16 –
is not only for a Jew who is in the category of "Yisrael"
(the name of elevation),
like the language of the verse17 "and Yisrael does valiantly",
but also a Jew who is on a lower level,
in the category of "Yaakov" –
there is also for him the going from strength to strength.
"Yaakov went on his way":
The ascent from strength to strength is specifically in a manner of going,
and true going is not merely an ascent to a level that is comparable to the previous level,
but rather an ascent to a level that is entirely incomparable to the previous level,
a boundless ascent<sup>18</sup>;
אן עלי' בלי גבולית 18;
and afterwards one ascends to an even higher level,
which is entirely incomparable also relative to the previous ascent
(even though that too was an incomparable ascent),
and so on, ascents upon ascents,
each one incomparably higher than the ascent that preceded it.
And as has been discussed many times19 that even within the boundless there are levels,
one boundlessness greater than another boundlessness.
An example of this
(levels within the boundless):
There is no "line" from one end of the world to the other; there are only three points.
[And the reason for this is,
because it is thus in the root of a line below –
in the line above that is drawn from the Ein Sof,
which is only three,
although it has a beginning and an end,
and it is the "line of measure",
and elsewhere we will elaborate on the explanation of these matters].
And in a "surface" from east to west etc., there are only three lines. It follows that there is one three greater than another three –
the three points in a "surface" is greater than the three points in a "line"
(because in the "surface" there are also three lines,
each of which has three points).
And accordingly, it is also understood regarding the drawing down of the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He –
that in addition to the blessing that is within measure and limitation,
there is also a blessing that is above measure and limitation.
As it is written, "The Lord God of your fathers add to you a thousand times as many as you are" –
which is the blessing that is within measure and limitation
("this is from My side",
"a limit to our blessing"),
and in addition –
"and bless you as He has spoken to you",
the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, which is without measure and limitation. And in the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, that is above measure and limitation itself –
there can be even higher and even higher,
a boundless blessing that is incomparably greater than the previous boundless blessing,
etc., etc.
א.א.וו.
And simply:
All blessings are included in the blessing of children, life, and ample sustenance. When the blessing of children, life, and ample sustenance comes from the Most High, it is in a manner of boundlessness
("and bless you as He has spoken to you").
But in this itself there can be an even higher boundlessness, so that in addition to having the general blessing of children, life, and ample sustenance,
which itself is boundless,
there is also the particular blessing of children
(and likewise life and sustenance)
in a boundless manner.
As it was in the exile of Egypt –
"And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty." From this itself, that it says "exceeding mighty," it is understood that it is possible for procreation to be not in a manner of "mighty,"
and here it says that the achievement was that they "were fruitful and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty" –
boundlessness in the blessing
(boundless)
of children themselves. And furthermore:
"exceeding mighty,"
twice – boundlessness
("mighty")
within boundlessness itself.
From this we see how in the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He
(which is boundless)
there can be levels in the blessing,
levels in boundlessness,
one boundlessness greater than another boundlessness.
Accordingly, it is also in the service of man,
in "And Jacob went on his way"
(which begins at the conclusion of the Festival of Sukkot),
that his service is in a manner of "they go from strength to strength" with a true progression –
an ascent to a level that is incomparably higher than the previous level,
the concept of boundlessness,
and thus he ascends from level to level,
each level being a higher level in boundlessness,
and is incomparably higher than the previous ascent.
And in general, this is the service in the manner of "with all your might",
where "your might" is boundlessness,
and when he performs his service in the manner of "with all your might" and ascends to a higher level in boundlessness,
"might",
he then continues his service in the manner of "with all your might" and ascends to yet another higher level in boundlessness.
And although this is only "your might",
i.e., boundlessness only in relation to the person
(but ostensibly not true boundlessness)
. And furthermore:
It is known that below there cannot be true boundlessness in actuality,
as explained regarding the matter of "and of His legions there is no number",
that this can only be in the bosom of the Creator –
however, the "your might"
(of each person according to his worth)
"takes" the true "might",
i.e., that the service in a manner of "with all your might",
"your might",
that the self utilizes all its powers for the service of God,
and then adds to it something more
("your might")
– this is the concept of boundlessness below,
and not only according to his worth,
but it becomes a vessel that receives true boundlessness.
The concept of true progression in a manner of boundlessness
("And Jacob went on his way" which begins at the conclusion of the Festival of Sukkot)
and levels in boundlessness itself –
also has a special connection to the matter of the joy of Simchat Torah:
Joy breaks boundaries.
I.e., service out of joy is boundlessness, breaking all boundaries and limitations.
And in this very matter, one says to a Jew,
that in the joy that breaks boundaries itself, he must add more than according to his capacities,
in a manner of "they will spread forth" –
he then takes the true BL"G.
And the joy that is beyond measure and limitation is not only from the soul,
but is also connected with the body,
"there is no joy except with meat" and "there is no joy except with wine."
And in continuation to this –
now bottles of liquor will be distributed in order to distribute them here.
(The Rebbe Shlita smiled and said:)
One cannot distribute a whole bottle to each one,
because there are not enough bottles for everyone! And furthermore:
If one will give each one a whole bottle –
he himself will not be able to drink it entirely! Therefore, bottles of liquor will be given only to elders,
and they will distribute from it to everyone.
The question arises –
since one will distribute only bottles to some people –
to whom should one distribute them so that it will not arouse "jealousy in the act of creation"?...
One has the advice:
Since the intention in this is the drawing down of blessings etc.,
the Almighty has already chosen the Kohanim
("the man of Your piety")
to draw down blessings and influences to Jews with love etc. Therefore, one will distribute the bottles of liquor to the Kohanim who are present here,
so that they will then distribute it to all other Jews –
through their distributing it to some general individuals who will further distribute it to all others,
or that they themselves should distribute it to each individual privately.
Since there are also many Kohanim here –
may they increase –
more than the number of bottles of liquor,
one will distribute the bottles to the Kohanim themselves –
in a manner of "whoever comes first merits." And especially to those Kohanim who are also rabbis or guides among Jews,
who occupy themselves with the matter of "and the congregation shall judge...
and the congregation shall deliver" –
and the Kohanim should distribute it to all who are present here in a manner of "a good eye, he shall be blessed."
[The Rebbe Shlita distributed bottles of liquor to some of the Kohanim,
and when no bottles remained –
he distributed cups of liquor to a few more Kohanim,
in order to distribute among those present.
And afterwards he said:]
Since one "busied" oneself with the Kohanim and one troubled them with doing a labor,
although it is not the order to trouble Kohanim with doing a labor –
one must ask their forgiveness,
and since this is a labor connected with a matter of joy,
they will surely forgive with a complete forgiveness etc.
(And afterwards he said:)
There are Kohanim who have already begun to make "calculations" –
how much liquor will be distributed today,
how much tomorrow,
how much one will take home and then keep a part of it until the eve of Passover,
and then drink it or pour it out –
this was not the intention at all,
but rather –
one should distribute it entirely now.
[Noise was made among the crowd –
and the Rebbe Shlita announced:
If one thinks that through noise one will accomplish something –
one brings a proof from the verse that "God is not in the noise"!
Afterwards, the Rebbe Shlita turned to one of the Kohanim and asked him whether he had already finished distributing all the liquor,
and when he answered in the affirmative,
he said to him:
Take home the "old jug"
(empty),
and fill it with "new wine" or with "old wine",
and continue the distribution –
as a continuation to Simchat Torah –
also in the days afterwards in every place that one can reach].
One speaks recently about the virtue of this year,
there is also an additional virtue in Simchat Torah in this year,
in addition to the virtue of Simchat Torah in all years,
being one of the festivals
(consequently, it has a virtue relative to the rest of the days of the year),
and within the festivals themselves –
the special elevation of the time of our joy,
the joy of the water drawing on the days of Sukkot,
until the joy of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.
One of the virtues of this year is –
that it is a leap year,
and in the leap year itself –
a full year,
of 385 days,
the greatest number of days that can be in a leap year.
From this comes also an elevation in Simchat Torah in this year
(the leap year):
The intention in the joy of Simchat Torah is –
to also continue it throughout all the days of the year
(as above in section 1),
so that all the days of the year should be permeated with the joy of Torah,
beginning by accepting good resolutions to increase in Torah study with joy.
From this it is understood that Simchat Torah has the power to continue joy for all the days of the year –
because the joy of all the days of the year,
"each and every day does its work",
is included in Simchat Torah.
It follows accordingly,
that in this year when there are the most days that can be in a year
(385 days),
Simchat Torah contains within itself
(of this year)
the greatest measure of joy,
joy for all 385 days,
each of which has its unique service with joy –
"each and every day does its work".
What in this
(that in this year there are 385 days)
there are several advantages regarding the service of man. And among them –
in connection with "Keren HaShanah"
(as is customary to mention about it on Simchat Torah):
The concept of "Keren HaShanah" is,
that at the beginning of the year one gives a sum of money to charity corresponding to the number of days of the year,
and on each and every day one gives from that money a specific amount to charity. From this it is understood,
that in this year when there are the greatest number of days –
385 days –
the sum that one gives at the beginning of the year for "Keren HaShanah" is also greater,
so that from it one can take for more days
(385 days).
And regarding this there is an advantage in this year concerning several matters in the service of man that he does at the beginning of this year in a manner that from it should be drawn forth throughout the entire year:
Since the year has the greatest number of days
(385 days),
a Jew knows at the beginning of the year that he is then taking the powers to accomplish for 385 days –
the greatest number of days in a year.
So too is the great advantage in our matter –
Simchat Torah in this year –
that when a Jew contemplates the service he needs to do throughout the entire year with the joy of Torah
(through the empowerment from Simchat Torah),
he knows that standing on Simchat Torah he already has ready the greatest abundance of joy,
for all the days of this year –
385 days.
Another advantage in Simchat Torah of this year –
that the placement of "Isru Chag"
(the conclusion of Simchat Torah)
is on the day of Shabbat
[for in such a placement the conclusion of Simchat Torah,
according to custom,
is at the end of Isru Chag]:
The concept of Shabbat is –
delight. And in this itself there is the delight that is drawn from above,
from the aspect that Shabbat is "sanctified and established". And in addition, a Jew has the power through his service to add even more to the delight that exists from its own side –
"and you shall call Shabbat a delight",
"one who delights in Shabbat". And together with this –
the delight that the created being
(a Jew)
brings about is connected with the delight of the Creator,
as discussed at length previously.
And particularly that on the day of Shabbat itself one finds oneself in a farbrengen and meal that began at the time of Ratzon d'Ratzon,
when there is the completeness and culmination of the concept of delight,
delight that is beyond measure and limitation,
higher even than the delight of the day of Shabbat,
all the more so the superiority of Shabbat,
as explained in many places that the three times on Shabbat are all connected with delight,
and as the law is that at each of the three times there is a mitzvah to delight in it with a meal
(the meal of Shabbat night,
the meal of Shabbat day,
and the third meal),
but in this itself there are three levels in delight,
one above the other in the manner of ascending in holiness within delight itself,
until the highest level in this –
at the time of Ratzon d'Ratzon.
From this is understood the additional instruction that comes when "Isru Chag" occurs on the day of Shabbat, whose concept is delight,
and at that very time –
at the time of Ratzon d'Ratzon:
The greatest delight that can be for living beings,
all the more so for human beings –
is connected with their life. And regarding a Jew it is said that the Torah is "our life and the length of our days".
That is, that when everything is as it should be for a Jew, his greatest delight is openly connected with the study of Torah, because that is his vitality
("our life and the length of our days").
One tells a Jew,
that in this year when "Asaru Chag" occurs on the Sabbath day
(which is delight) –
that in "Asaru Chag"
(the conclusion of Simchat Torah)
the service of "And Jacob went on his way" begins for the entire year,
and then one begins "to unpack the bundles" that one has gathered during the month of Tishrei –
he has special powers
(more than in other years)
that the "And Jacob went on his way" in all aspects of his service and the "unpacking the bundles" throughout the entire year should be conducted with delight,
for the greatest aspect of delight is when it is connected to his vitality –
consequently, the added delight is expressed in that he increases in Torah study in quantity and quality,
feeling that this is his vitality,
consequently, it provides him with the greatest delight.
Until the delight of Torah study comes out openly,
as explained in Chassidic discourses
(also in discourses of Simchat Torah)
regarding what the Gemara says that the face of Rabbi Abahu shone
(and he explained)
that he found an ancient Tosefta
(or a new one),
"an old Tosefta that he had never seen in his life he found and saw in it new things and rejoiced in it,
that is, for him it was 'new.'
And similarly, they tell about Rabbi Yehuda that his face was radiant from "A person's wisdom makes his face shine,"
Chassidus explains that by Rabbi Abahu
(and similarly by Rabbi Yehuda)
there was no difference between the light and the vessel,
because they both became one thing,
consequently, when there was added to him in the inwardness of his vitality,
the matter of Torah study which "is our life" –
it was immediately noticeable also in the vessel,
in the radiance of his face,
to the extent that it was noticeable to non-Jews
(as related there).
Since this is related in Torah,
in the sense of instruction,
and Torah is eternal,
that is, as an eternal instruction –
from this there is proof that every Jew can attain this. And even if he is not at a level that all
(or most)
of his days the delight of Torah study should be noticeable in the radiance of his face,
it is certain that from time to time this matter can and must be with him,
because if not,
Torah would not have related it to him.
That is, in other words –
simply:
every Jew must take from this Simchat Torah
(when "Asaru Chag" occurs on the Sabbath day)
delight in his Torah study,
that is, that while he studies Torah it should be noticeable upon him
[not as one who is weary –
which actually also does not matter...
but the main thing is,
that upon him should be noticeable]
in the radiance of his face the delight in Torah study,
because of that which has come to him an "ancient Tosefta,"
which is for him "new"
(a new thing).
And there is no need to "worry" what will be tomorrow when the "ancient Tosefta" will no longer be a novelty for him,
he will seemingly have nothing from which his face should be radiant –
because Torah is infinite,
consequently, however many new matters he will find in Torah,
there will always remain infinite matters. In addition to that, also in the matters that he knows from before –
he can attain even further,
deeper,
higher and broader
[the three dimensions of length, breadth and depth that exist in intellect,
as the middle Rebbe explains at length].
And simply:
one should increase in Torah study and understanding both in quantity and in quality,
for in both of them
(quantity and quality)
one can always attain even more,
even deeper,
to raise the discussion in accordance with the halacha and so forth,
since Torah is infinite.
According to the above, the special superiority of Simchat Torah in this year is understood, that one has an abundance of the matter of delight from the matter of joy:
In the calendar of this year, both matters come together –
Simchat Torah and Shabbat,
because
(although Simchat Torah ends on Friday,
nevertheless)
according to custom, the conclusion of Simchat Torah in the calendar of this year –
is at the end of Asaru Chag,
that is, at the end of Shabbat.
And now
(on Motzaei Shabbat)
begins "Vayakhel halach ledarko",
because although in the inner aspect of matters "Vayakhel halach ledarko" begins on Isru Chag
(immediately after Simchat Torah),
also when it is the day of Shabbat –
it is however in a revealed manner and in relation to actual deed
(which is the main thing)
that this begins only
(after Shabbat -)
on Motzaei Shabbat,
when one enters into the labor of the weekdays. And particularly according to what is explained in Likkutei Torah that the service of the aspect of Yaakov begins on Motzaei Shabbat because it specifically relates to weekdays.
This is so on every Motzaei Shabbat whatever it may be
(that now begins the service of Yaakov);
(אז דעמולט הויבט זיך אן די עבודה פון יעקב);
and so too on every Motzaei Simchat Torah begins "Vayakhel halach ledarko";
און אזוי אויך בכל מוצאי שמח"ת הויבט זיך אן "ויעקב הלך לדרכו";
in this year both things come together:
Motzaei Simchat Torah
(which according to custom its conclusion is at the end of Isru Chag)
is on Motzaei Shabbat.
Consequently it turns out that now one has an incomparably greater bestowal of power than on other Motzaei Shabbat and on other Simchat Torah:
It is not merely like an ordinary Motzaei Shabbat,
but a Motzaei Shabbat that is also Motzaei Simchat Torah.
Consequently one has thereby
(not only delight from the aspect of Shabbat,
but also)
joy from the aspect of Simchat Torah,
and in this year –
a joy in the greatest multiplicity
(corresponding to the three hundred and fifty-five days of the year);
(כנגד שפ"ה ימי השנה);
and on the other hand –
this is not merely like Simchat Torah of every year, but
(Motzaei)
Simchat Torah that falls on Shabbat,
consequently one has thereby also the aspect of delight from the aspect of Shabbat.
This gives a Jew the understanding how many powers he possesses when going out to perform the service throughout all the days of the year:
That as soon as the time after Havdalah arrives,
when now begins the service of "Vayakhel halach ledarko"
(both from the aspect of Motzaei Shabbat,
and from the aspect of Motzaei Simchat Torah),
and he now begins "to pack the bundles" –
a Jew must know that immediately at the beginning of the matter
(just before he "packs the bundles")
he has within him, prepared, the greatest quantity and quality of joy and delight,
and both together.
And knowing this,
it is understood how much vitality this gives him in performing his service throughout the entire year.
From this is also understood the unique superiority of Simchat Torah in this year –
in connection with the aspect of the study of Torah throughout the entire year
(as above section 66):
When a Jew takes upon himself on Simchat Torah good resolutions to increase in the study of Torah and its dissemination in the manner of "Yagdil Torah Veyadir" –
he must know that already at the beginning of the matter he has prepared a quantity and a quality, the greatest, of delight and joy:
Delight –
from the aspect that Isru Chag
(when the service of the entire year begins)
is on the day of Shabbat
(as above section 66);
(כנ"ל ס"ו);
and joy –
from the aspect that on Simchat Torah are included the aspects of the joy of Torah that are in all the days of the year in the greatest multiplicity,
three hundred and fifty-five days
(as above section 65).
And one must connect this
(the emphasis on delight and joy together in the fixed pattern of this year)
with the general aspect of a leap year:
The aspect of a leap year is –
to reconcile the difference between the solar year and the lunar year.
The difference between sun and moon is analogous to the difference between delight and joy
(as discussed earlier at length):
The moon has within it changes from time to time,
even changes from moment to moment,
as is simply seen
[and therefore it is also so with Israel who count by the moon,
that in their service there must be changes –
they ascend in holiness],
analogous to the aspect of joy in which the movement of haste and change etc. is emphasized.
The sun does not have any changes within it,
analogous to the aspect of delight,
a feeling of rest,
in a manner of permanence and eternity etc.
It turns out,
that the aspect of a leap year,
which reconciles the solar year with the lunar year –
is analogous to the connection of delight with joy.
The lesson from this in the service of a Jew to serve his Creator
[according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov that everything one sees or hears is in order to learn from it a lesson in the service of a Jew]:
That all his affairs and all his matters that he does every single day must be permeated both with joy and with delight,
and the connection of both of them together
(as is emphasized in this year which is a leap year),
which then comes to each of them.
And in particular in the determination of this year when Isru Chag Simchat Torah occurs on the day of Shabbat, whose essence is delight. And in the leap year of this year, which has the greatest number of days
(385 days),
consequently it contains Simchat Torah
(from which one takes strength for the service with joy throughout the entire year)
the greatest joy,
joy for 385 days.
And being permeated with delight and joy,
it is understood that this is expressed in an increase in the study of Torah, which is "our life and the length of our days,"
the greatest delight for a person
(as above).
That is, simply:
one increases in the study of Torah,
both in quantity and in quality,
and the study of Torah with delight and joy,
which itself then adds to the study,
that it should be with more vitality,
understanding and deeper comprehension and so forth.
And since Torah is infinite,
however much a Jew studies Torah he can always increase in it ad infinitum, as above
(ibid.).
(ס"ו).
The instruction regarding increasing in the study of Torah ad infinitum,
emphasized in the determination of this year when "Isru Chag" occurs on Shabbat –
is also connected with the daily Chumash lesson of "Isru Chag" that falls on Shabbat
(as the Alter Rebbe says that one must "live" with the time,
with the weekly portion that one studies at that time),
which then one studies the entire Parshat Bereishit
(as his holiness my father-in-law, the Rebbe, established).
And the explanation of this:
The uniqueness of Parshat Bereishit relative to all the portions is,
that it is the beginning of the Torah. But if only from that perspective, there is also an advantage in Parshat Vezot Haberachah being the conclusion of the Torah. One must find the advantage in Parshat Bereishit that distinguishes it from all other portions,
including Parshat Vezot Haberachah.
This is understood from the story that his holiness my father-in-law, the Rebbe, told about the conduct of our Nesiim in connection with being called up to the Torah on Simchat Torah
(when then all Jews are called up to the Torah)
in the special aliyot of "Chatan Torah" and "Chatan Bereishit" –
that there was a time when regarding the Nesiim there was a change from year to year,
one year they were called up to "Chatan Torah,"
and another year –
to "Chatan Bereishit,"
and so on in a cycle,
afterwards it was established that they are called up to "Chatan Bereishit."
And among the reasons for the matter –
as our Nesiim explained –
because of the special quality in Parshat Bereishit,
that it is the longest portion. And the explanation of this is not
(so)
regarding the number of verses in Parshat Bereishit
(because there is a portion (Parshat Nasso) that has more verses than Parshat Bereishit. And especially when two portions are joined),
but primarily because in this portion is included the longest span of time –
from the creation of the world
("In the beginning G-d created")
until the time of Noach
("And Noach found favor in the eyes of the L-rd"),
approximately one and a half thousand years,
which in no other portion in the Torah is such a length of time included.
What, seemingly, is such importance in the Torah that in one portion so many years are included? And especially such years that are the ten generations from Adam until Noach,
which seemingly are not so great,
as explained in Pirkei Avot*
But this is precisely the point:
The Torah in its completeness "is not in heaven,"
rather it was given specifically in this lowly world,
which is connected with time and place together
(as is known that the world consists of time and place),
consequently a matter that takes the longest time,
is connected with the longest matter or matters in the Torah
(because the Torah was given specifically in time and place).
And as discussed many times that when it comes to an increase in holiness,
in this case –
the longest portion in the Torah –
this is not only an increase in quantity,
but also in quality and importance.
That is, that the importance and essence of the matter are changed.
From this is understood the special elevation in the determination of this year,
when on "Isru Chag"
(when then begins the service of the entire year)
one studies the entire Parshat Bereishit,
the longest portion –
that one begins the service of the entire year with studying in one day
("Isru Chag")
the longest portion in the Torah,
that is, the longest matters in the Torah.
Since our Rabbis and Nesiim have told this
(that in Parshas Bereishis is the longest portion (in time) in the Torah,
which is connected to the longest subjects in the Torah) –
it is certainly relevant to everyone. And especially since the Rebbe, my father-in-law, also told it to me,
he certainly knew that I would publicize it,
meaning that he knew from the outset –
and wanted –
that this should be publicized to the many.
Therefore, there must be a lesson from this in the service of each and every one.
So the lesson from this is:
The Torah is "longer than the measure of the earth, etc." –
without limit. And the "nature" of the Unlimited is,
that not only the entirety of the subject,
in this case –
the entirety of the Torah is Unlimited,
but all of its parts are without limit,
meaning, every particular subject in the Torah contains within itself unlimited subjects.
And in the well-known expression –
in the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov in the name of the Rasa"g –
"The essence, when you grasp a part of it, you grasp all of it." And just as this is brought in connection with every Jew,
that the essence of a Jew is a part of the essence,
consequently, he grasps the entire essence,
so too is this in the Torah –
"This is the Torah, man,"
that every particular subject in the Torah is connected to the essence of the Torah,
consequently, it can be expanded –
if one learns the subject properly –
in a manner of the greatest length,
until without end.
And it is known the explanation of Chassidus on the words of the Baraisa, "One who learns one chapter from his fellow, etc., or even one letter, must treat him with honor,
for so we find with David, king of Israel,
who learned from Achitofel only two things,
he called him his teacher, his guide, and his confidant, etc. And are these not a fortiori?
If David, king of Israel, who learned from Achitofel only two things,
called him his teacher, etc.,
then one who learns one chapter from his fellow, etc., or even one letter,
all the more so must he treat him with honor" –
for at first glance:
learning "two things" is more than learning "one letter,"
so how can there be a kal vachomer here?
So one of the explanations of this is:
Regarding the two things that David learned from Achitofel, it says "only,"
but regarding "one who learns from his fellow," it does not say "only" –
because when "a person learns from a proper teacher,
the Torah is fruitful and multiplies for him." Therefore,
even when he learns only one chapter or even one letter –
it is not "only,"
but in a manner of increase –
"fruitful and multiplies."
But when one learns Torah from someone who is not proper and fitting, etc.,
then the learning remains "only two things."
Therefore, this is a kal vachomer:
"If David, king of Israel, who learned from Achitofel only two things, called him his teacher, his guide, and his confidant,
then one who learns one chapter from his fellow, etc., or even one letter
(which is not in a manner of 'only,'
but 'fruitful and multiplies for him')
all the more so must he treat him with honor."
One sees from this that
(not only is the entirety of the Torah "longer than the measure of the earth, etc.,"
but also)
every particular subject in the Torah,
even one letter of the Torah
(when one learns it properly),
is not a subject in itself, "only,"
but is connected to the entire Torah,
because when you grasp a part of the essence
(even one letter)
you grasp all of it.
Meaning, that every particular subject in the Torah
(even one letter)
can be expanded in the most lengthy manner,
until without end,
similar to the entirety of the Torah.
An example of this in Halacha:
Whoever completes a Torah scroll, even one letter, is considered as if he wrote it entirely,
and thereby fulfills the mitzvah of "Write for yourselves this song."
Regarding this, it is also understandable concerning the study of Torah
(not only concerning the writing of a Torah scroll),
all the more so study that is for its own sake,
that a study of any particular subject in the Torah is connected to the entire Torah.
And as even the simplest of the simple understands:
When a subject is added to his intellect
(if it is a true intellect),
it is not merely an addition of another subject,
but it gives him a better understanding of all the subjects that he has learned until then,
because the one subject in the intellect has a connection to the other subjects of the intellect.
All the more so, thus it is regarding the intellect of the Torah –
which is the true essence of intellect –
that all the matters of the Torah are connected with each other,
and the understanding of a particular matter,
even a single letter in the Torah,
is not merely an additional matter,
rather it adds to increase the understanding and comprehension in the other parts of the Torah. However, there are matters where he can immediately see how in them understanding and comprehension have been added through the study of this matter,
and there are matters that in order to have this addition in understanding one must have the "toil,"
but it is certain that he will come to this.
Through this one will understand the lesson of Shabbat Bereishit –
the longest portion:
The portion of Bereishit,
the longest portion,
emphasizes especially how a matter in the Torah is extended in a manner of the greatest length until infinity –
"longer than the measure of the earth" –
simply in terms of the number of letters and verses. And even if there are portions with more verses,
the portion includes the longest time that a portion in the Torah includes within itself,
which indicates the greatest length in the quality and essence of the thing,
the longest matters in the Torah
(because the Torah was given specifically in time and place,
as mentioned above).
The lesson from this regarding practical action:
When one studies a particular matter in the Torah,
one verse,
one Mishnah,
one halachah,
even a single letter –
it must be extended in a manner of the greatest length,
in length, breadth, and depth,
without end,
because since the particular matter is a part of "longer than the measure of the earth,"
it too is infinite,
when you grasp a part of the essence you grasp all of it,
and through this particular matter in the Torah one comes to understanding and comprehension of the entire Torah,
as mentioned above.
And in the language of the verse* –
the entirety of the Torah is "your life and the length of your days" –
in a manner of length of days,
and so it is also regarding every particular matter in the Torah
(even a few verses).
If this is so regarding a particular matter in the Torah,
a few verses,
or even a single letter in the Torah –
all the more so is this so regarding an entire portion in the Torah,
a portion that has within itself the greatest length
(in terms of the time that is included in it),
more length than in all the portions of the Torah.
From this it is understood that Shabbat Bereishit has within itself a special power that the study of the Torah should be in a manner that every particular matter that one studies should be extended in a manner of the greatest length
("longer than the measure of the earth, etc."),
until infinity.
And this is the special lesson of Simchat Torah in the determination of this year,
when Isru Chag falls on Shabbat Bereishit,
and one then lives with the time,
with the longest portion in the Torah –
that one has special powers that the study of the Torah throughout the entire year –
which begins and the power for this is drawn from Simchat Torah
(as mentioned above in section 1) –
should be in a manner that every word and matter that one studies should be extended in a manner of the greatest length,
without end.
He might think that in order to study Torah in the aforementioned manner
(that his study should be extended in a manner of the greatest length)
one must have great toil,
so how will he be able to do this?
One tells him:
Together with this, "Isru Chag" is also the day of Shabbat
(Shabbat Bereishit),
whose essence is delight
(as mentioned above in section 6) –
both in its own right,
and in addition the delight that a Jew adds on Shabbat
("and you shall call the Shabbat a delight,"
"the one who delights the Shabbat") –
consequently, the power for the study of the Torah in a manner of the greatest length –
is from delight,
therefore it comes to a Jew not with toil and labor,
rather with pleasure.
And together with this, in this year there is also a special emphasis and addition in the matter of joy –
because in Simchat Torah are included the matters of joy of all the days of the year in the greatest multiplicity –
seventy days
(as mentioned above in section 5).
One has
(in the study of the Torah)
both the matter of delight and the matter of joy,
and also how they are together
(as mentioned above in section 7).
And the action is the main thing –
in simple letters:
How much one decided to add in the measures of Torah in quantity and in quality –
the determination of this year emphasizes that one must add in this again and again,
and in a manner that every matter that one learns should be in a manner of length without end
(as one learns it from the weekly portion with which one is now living –
Parshat Bereishit),
and all this –
with joy and delight,
and moreover –
joy and delight together as one.
And this applies both regarding oneself,
and both regarding influence upon others,
and especially those who are influencers upon additional Jews,
or many Jews,
directors of institutions and the like,
because since this is with Divine Providence,
they were certainly given all the powers in a measure that they should be able to carry out in completeness –
and with joy and delight –
their mission to influence additional Jews,
many Jews,
an institution and the like.
And when every Jew fulfills his individual mission,
then the collective mission of all of the people of Israel is completed –
to make for Him, blessed be He, a dwelling place in the lower realms.
That the matter
(of a dwelling place in the lower realms,
the perfection of the world)
is emphasized in the study of Parshat Bereishit from its beginning until its end:
At the beginning of the portion it discusses the creation of the world in the manner of "the world was created in its fullness",
as explained in the Midrash on the verse "These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created",
generations full. And at its end –
"And Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord",
in the aspect of "favor" which is higher than good and kindness and all other matters
(as explained at length in the discourses of Chassidus where it discusses the matter of favor),
until the matter is emphasized in his name which they called him in the Holy Tongue –
"Noach" the letters of "favor".
And the "And Noah found favor" is "in the eyes of the Lord". And based on this it is understood that "And Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord"
(which is at the end of the portion)
is higher than the creation of the world
(in a manner of perfection)
at the beginning of the portion,
because at the beginning of the portion it says "In the beginning God created etc.",
and at the end –
"And Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord".
Until one comes afterwards
(in continuation of this)
to the beginning of Parshat Noach –
"These are the generations of Noah, Noah",
two times Noah,
the perfection of the matter of "Noach" –
"rest for the supernal beings and rest for the lower beings"
(as above).
Also in the word "rest" are the letters of "Noach" and "favor",
only in "rest" there are more letters,
because in the language of translation
("rest")
one needs more vessels
(letters)
in order to have the same light that is drawn down through vessels
(letters)
in the Holy Tongue.
And according to the teaching of the Alter Rebbe
(as above)
that one must "live" with the time,
with the weekly portion –
one must in this time live with the portion. And every Jew to whom the words of the old Rebbe have reached,
is a sign that he can live with it,
and the matter depends only on his will.
And regarding our matter –
this gives
(the matter of "rest")
additional emphasis in the aforementioned instruction regarding adding in the study of Torah with joy and delight:
When one has the matter of "rest"
(repose)
in the lower realms in its simple sense,
a year of repose
(rest)
from all matters that cause confusion –
one then has the fullest possibility to add in the study of Torah in its completeness with repose
(of holiness), joy
(of holiness)
and delight
(of holiness).
Until that Jews drive away the exile,
and moreover –
"And it was turned over,
one turns over and one transforms the exile into redemption,
as discussed in the farbrengen of before this that through the fact that one inserts the letter Aleph
(the Master of the world)
after the Gimel of the word "exile" –
it becomes from this "redemption",
meaning that the letter Gimel that was the initial letter of "exile" one transforms to be its initial letter of "redemption".
And the matter depends only on our actions and our service,
as explained in Tanya that all matters of the future to come depend on our actions and our service all the time of the duration of the exile.
May it be His will that this should come down in actual reality,
below ten handbreadths,
and with delight and joy
(as above),
true delight and joy connected with the true and complete redemption through our righteous Mashiach,
when it will be "in stillness and rest you shall be saved",
and together with this –
"and behold, with the clouds of heaven",
with the greatest haste,
as is known the explanation regarding these two matters
("stillness and rest" and "haste") –
that this is the difference between the preparations for the redemption and the redemption itself
(with all the explanations in this).
The main point is –
that the redemption should come in actuality,
which will cause one to stop thinking about the manner in which it comes,
since one sees it with physical eyes.
One must have it in actuality,
in the manner of "immediately they are redeemed,"
and then one will automatically have all the details and minutiae of the redemption,
and certainly the general principles.
And "a great congregation shall return here,"
the perfection of the people,
together with the perfection of the Torah and His commandments,
"as the commandments of Your will,"
together with the perfection of the matter of time and place,
which is connected to the perfection of the land,
until "the Lord your God will expand your border,"
And in the manner of "rest for the upper ones and rest for the lower ones,"
literally in our time, immediately.
It is a principle according to halachah that one should not do any perplexing things,
and especially more than one thing.
Therefore, this is the place to explain three practices in the last days –
which can seemingly arouse a perplexity,
one must explain them,
and then the perplexity will fall away.
First and foremost –
regarding the recitation of the haftarah of this Shabbat:
The beginning of today's haftarah is "So said the Lord,"
and its conclusion –
"He will magnify the Torah and make it glorious" according to the Sephardic custom,
and according to the Ashkenazic custom, one continues saying additional verses,
until "and after Me there will be none."
It is known what the Rebbe
(the Maharash)
of blessed memory writes in his glosses printed in the Siddur,
that regarding the haftarot in which there are differences of custom between Sephardim and Ashkenazim,
our custom is, for the most part, according to the Sephardic custom. And it is already printed
(by the command of His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, at the time of printing the Siddur)
in the Siddur "The Order of Haftarot in which there are Differences of Custom,"
that the haftarah of Parshat Bereishit is from "So said the Lord" until "He will magnify the Torah and make it glorious."
The perplexity arises:
Why did I recite the haftarah today according to the Ashkenazic custom?
So the answer to this is:
This practice is a personal matter that pertains to me,
according to what I understood from that which His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, answered regarding questions that were asked of him,
that in a leap year, people of my standing
(for whatever reason)
should recite the entire haftarah until the end,
according to the Ashkenazic custom.
If I had heard from His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, the reason for this,
I would not have held myself back and would have printed the practice with the reason –
then each person could have thought for himself and decided if the matter pertained to him, etc.
Since, however, I did not hear the reason for this,
and furthermore, this is a matter that pertains only to a very small minority –
there was no place to publicize it and print it,
because it is in the category of a perplexing matter, etc.,
since I myself was occupied with printing the Siddur and copied that the haftarah of Parshat Bereishit is from "So said the Lord" until "He will magnify the Torah and make it glorious" –
so how is it that in a leap year one deviates from this and recites the haftarah further until the end? Therefore, there was no place to print it.
But on the other hand:
Since His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, relied that I would understand from his words that in a leap year, people of my standing
(for whatever reason)
should recite the entire haftarah
(not as it is written in the Siddur),
and he did not negate the matter
(even though regarding the recitation of the haftarah in public,
with the blessing before it and after it,
this (reciting more than one needs to recite,
in this case –
until the end of the haftarah) is connected to a question of an interruption,
and it is in public (unlike regarding reviewing the weekly portion, two times the scripture and one time the translation, which is not so relevant –
because it is without a blessing and without publicity)] –
I walk on an iron bridge. Because I have in this an explicit directive from His Holiness, my father-in-law, the Rebbe.
Therefore, I relate the account of the matter as it is,
and although it is a perplexing thing,
I am in this regard in the category of "commanded and doing."
And as mentioned –
the matter pertains to me,
it is not a directive for the public.
Another matter that arouses a question –
regarding what was discussed earlier about the matter of "Birkat Kohanim,"
when at that time I said the verses "Vayidaber Hashem, Davar Hashem, Yevarechecha Hashem, Ya'er Hashem, Yisa Hashem, Veyasem Lecha Shalom,"
but when it came to the last verse –
I only said the conclusion of the verse –
"Va'ani Avarechem,"
skipping the beginning of the verse –
"Vesamu Et Shemi Al Bnei Yisrael"?!
The explanation for this is:
It is a general rule everywhere that when one brings a proof from a verse, one may bring only a part of the verse,
the part which is relevant to the matter for which one needs to bring a proof
(and skip the remaining parts of the verse).
And it is not only a rule in Torah,
but it also has a reason,
a logical rationale:
Since here we are not discussing the study of the verse in its context,
but rather bringing a proof from a verse from another place regarding a specific matter,
there is no place to also bring words of the verse that are not relevant to that matter. Because since one does not need to address those words in the verse,
it is out of place to bring those words here. And this is a rationale that applies to all matters of the world
(not only in matters of Torah study):
One should not use something without any need.
And all the more so when a part of the verse is entirely contradictory to the matter being discussed here,
if one were to bring that part of the verse, it would cause confusion regarding the entire matter for which one needs a proof.
Thus in our case:
In the matter that was discussed at that farbrengen, that every Jew should bless other Jews with the formulation of Birkat Kohanim –
only the part of the verse "Va'ani Avarechem" was relevant,
but if one would also say the part of the verse "Vesamu Et Shemi Al Bnei Yisrael,"
it would have confused the entire matter.
And the explanation of this is:
The content of what was discussed at that time was:
It was proposed that each Jew should bless the other with the accepted formulation of Birkat Kohanim.
Because, as is obvious and simple according to what is explained in many places in Torah,
even in the ruling of halachah, that it is a good thing and a mitzvah to bless another Jew and all Jews –
as the verse says regarding one who blesses a Jew, "Va'avarecha Mevorechecha." And furthermore, it is understood according to the wonder of our Nesi'im in the matter of Ahavat Yisrael,
not only regarding a good feeling toward another Jew,
but also and primarily that the feeling is revealed through the fact that one blesses him and the like
(and at that time, "Va'avarecha Mevorechecha" also applies to this),
and as is known from the teaching of the Alter Rebbe
(transmitted by my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe,
as already printed)
regarding the greatness of the virtue of a Chassidic farbrengen,
the great joy that the Almighty has when He sees how His children gather together and one blesses the other.
Therefore, it was proposed that at that Chassidic farbrengen, each Jew should bless the other.
And it was proposed that the blessing should be with the accepted formulation of "Birkat Kohanim"
(in Parshat Nasso).
Because, although the mission to bless all Jews with the formulation of "Birkat Kohanim" was given by the Almighty specifically to the Kohanim –
"Ish Chasidecha" –
nevertheless,
since it concerns verses in the Torah,
just as any Jew can say the verses as a part of Torah study,
so too can any Jew
(not specifically Kohanim)
use the verses
(of Birkat Kohanim)
in order to bless another Jew
(because here we are not dealing with a blessing before [the blessing] as the Kohanim do when they bless Jews,
but rather as a blessing that one wishes upon Jews without a blessing before [the blessing]),
because the blessing
(of Birkat Kohanim)
is not inferior to any other formulation of blessing with which a Jew can bless another Jew.
Consequently,
instead of seeking his own new formulation of blessing,
he uses the formulation of Birkat Kohanim.
And on the contrary:
The formulation
(of the Priestly Blessing)
is better than a simple formulation. When one blesses a Jew with one's own formulation,
one must think what is included in this formulation and what one must add. What did he say and what not etc.;
דארף מען טראכטן וואס איז נכלל בנוסח זה און וואס דארף מען מוסיף זיין. וואס האט ער געזאגט און וואס ניט וכו';
However, the formulation of the Priestly Blessing is already a prepared formulation of blessing that includes all matters of blessing for all Jews who understand or do not understand the formulation,
as discussed earlier that one may not remove even one letter from this blessing,
because in addition to the fact that such a blessing is not "with love,"
it can even harm the priest. From this it is understood that the Priestly Blessing includes all Jews.
And one should add to this:
One finds several matters that in the time when the Holy Temple existed were done specifically by priests. And after the destruction of the Holy Temple they are done by all Jews.
For example –
The matter of sacrifices:
Although in the Holy Temple the service of sacrifices was specifically by the priests,
after the destruction prayers were instituted in place of sacrifices,
and prayer is done by each and every Jew.
That is, the true Torah instructs every Jew that he should pray by himself. In addition to the fact that prayer is a commandment,
it is in place of sacrifices which in the Holy Temple were done specifically by priests.
And regarding this it can be said concerning the Priestly Blessing:
Although the Priestly Blessing is a positive commandment from the Torah in every time and in every place,
as the ruling of the Alter Rebbe: "It is a positive commandment from the Torah that the priests should bless Israel every day with the raising of the hands,"
nevertheless,
since in many matters each and every Jew has been given powers to do that which specifically priests had the power to do in the time when the Holy Temple existed,
it can be said that also the blessing in the formulation of the Priestly Blessing can be performed by every Jew
(only it is not a positive commandment as it is for a priest,
and certainly one should not make a blessing over this).
Therefore it was proposed
(at the aforementioned farbrengen)
that being in a worthy time,
Simchat Torah,
each one should bless the other with the formulation of the Priestly Blessing. And in addition to the aforementioned virtues in this blessing
(that it includes all blessings and all Jews),
it also has the virtue that the blessing is not only a blessing and drawing down from the root and source
(which is also a very elevated matter),
as in all blessings,
but it also has the virtue of an entirely new drawing down
(higher than the root and source),
a drawing down of a new will,
"May it be His will,"
in the manner of through prayer,
as explained elsewhere.
And since with this blessing
(the Priestly Blessing)
one recites a complete verse from the Torah in its form,
one may recite it with the Names,
all the more so and a fortiori:
Even when one recites the verse as a part of Torah study one may recite it with the Names,
how much more so when one recites it as Torah study combined with a blessing with which one blesses a Jew. Therefore it was said earlier with the Names.
After this introduction one will understand why one also said the conclusion of the verse "and I will bless them,"
skipping the words "and they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" –
because "and I will bless them" comes in continuation and in accordance with the aforementioned intention
(at that farbrengen)
in the recitation of this blessing,
however "and they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" is confusing to this matter:
After the recitation of the blessing "May He bless you etc. May He shine etc. May He lift etc. peace" –
a blessing for each and every Jew –
one concluded and completed the matter with "and I will bless them,"
that is, in addition to the blessing
(by Israel)
one also has the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He –
"and I will bless them,"
with the two interpretations of this
(in Rashi on the verse (from the Gemara)): (a)
"And I will bless them –
Israel,
and I will agree with the priests." (b)
"And I will bless them –
the priests."
That is, in our matter –
in addition to the blessing with which one Jew blesses other Jews,
one also has the blessing and agreement of the Holy One, blessed be He, upon the blessing with which one blesses Jews,
and also the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, to those who bless.
But one did not bring the first part of the verse "and they shall place My name upon the children of Israel,"
because not only is this not relevant to the content of the matter discussed here,
but it is even a contradiction to this –
that every Jew
(not only priests)
blesses other Jews:
There is an interpretation of "And they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" that this is connected to "And I will bless them." But Rashi on the verse explains a different interpretation –
And from this it is understood that this is the plain meaning of the verse –
That "And they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" means:
"They shall bless them with the explicit name."
It is understood simply that according to this interpretation of "And they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" –
the plain meaning of the verse –
it not only has no connection to the matter discussed here
(that every Jew –
not only Kohanim –
should bless other Jews),
but it is precisely the opposite of the intention:
Because in this time
(all the more so outside the Land)
a blessing with the explicit name is entirely not applicable even in the Priestly Blessing by Kohanim,
this was applicable only in the Land of Israel at the time when the Holy Temple was standing. And even at the time when the Holy Temple was standing, not all Kohanim blessed with the explicit name,
as explained in the Talmud and the halachic authorities,
all the more so it is not applicable that every Jew in this time should bless with the explicit name.
And based on this, it is compelled to say
(according to Rashi on the verse)
that "And I will bless them" is one matter
("And I will bless them, Israel, and I will agree with the Kohanim" or "And I will bless them –
the Kohanim"),
which is indeed appropriate to our subject
(the blessing of Jews to other Jews);
(די ברכה פון אידן צו אנדערע אידן);
and in addition to this, the verse speaks about a second matter –
"And they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" –
"They shall bless them with the explicit name",
which has no connection to "And I will bless them",
and no connection to the matter discussed here.
Therefore, they only said "And I will bless them" and skipped the part of the verse "And they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" –
because this does not fit at all in the current situation and circumstance when it is not applicable to bless with the explicit name,
and they only said the part of the verse that is relevant to the content of the aforementioned matters –
"And I will bless them".
When one learns the passage
(of the Priestly Blessing)
in the Torah,
or one says it on the eve of Yom Kippur
(in the blessing of the sons,
daughters, etc.) –
one says the entire passage
(also "And they shall place My name, etc."),
because it is in a different style,
a complete passage in the Torah, etc.;
א פרשה שלימה בתורה כו';
But when one says the verse in connection with a specific matter in practical conduct
(blessing Jews)
where "And they shall place My name, etc.",
"They shall bless them with the explicit name" is not relevant,
and on the contrary –
it is the opposite of the intention –
there is the aforementioned instruction in many places that when one brings a proof from a verse for a specific matter, one brings only what is relevant to the matter –
therefore, they had no choice and they had to not mention that part of the verse.
However, in writing
(not speaking of Shabbat) –
one can write the other verses and allude to "And they shall place My name upon the children of Israel" with an "etc.";
קען מען שרייבן די אנדערע פסוקים און מרמז זיין צו "ושמו את שמי על בנ"י" מיט א "וגו'";
this is not the case when one speaks orally. In addition to this:
Also in the places where the Gemara and the like brings only a specific part of a verse because the second part is not relevant to this matter,
the Gemara does not allude to the other part of the verse even with an "etc." Not that we compare ourselves to the Gemara,
but because it is a matter of logic
(why one should not allude to the part of the verse that is not relevant to the matter under discussion –
with an "etc."),
one can learn from the way of the Gemara and the like in this from "All your deeds should be for the sake of Heaven" and "In all your ways know Him." Therefore, they did not mention even an "etc." at that time to allude to the words "And they shall place My name upon the children of Israel".
A third matter regarding which they may seek a pretext –
concerning the recitation of "The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds" in the Grace after Meals of a meal that began on a Festival and ended on Shabbat:
The previous time that there was such a fixed occasion –
at the farbrengen of Rosh Hashanah –
even though I
(the one who recites the blessing)
did not spread a cloth and sanctify, and I did not intend to fulfill the obligation of the sanctification of the day through the fact that someone else spread a cloth and sanctified
(for known reasons),
nevertheless, I said in the Grace After Meals "The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds,"
with the explanation that since "Your people Israel require blessing,"
one can and it is fitting and proper to add another matter in the blessing of Israel
("The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat etc."),
and especially since according to the opinion of the Taz "even if one did not eat an olive's bulk after dark, one must mention
(of Shabbat),
because at the time that one recites the blessing, the day has already been sanctified"
(as the Alter Rebbe brings in his Shulchan Aruch,
although he does not rule accordingly).
Therefore,
in a place where it is permitted to interrupt –
one can and it is proper to add "The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat etc."
Accordingly, the question arises:
Why yesterday
(Simchat Torah),
when the meal also began on a festival and ended on Shabbat –
did I not say in the Grace After Meals "The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat etc." –
when the last time we conducted ourselves thus and explained that this is how one should conduct oneself?
The difference between them is a simple one:
On the previous occasion
(at the farbrengen of Rosh Hashanah)
a part of the congregation conducted themselves in the manner of spreading a cloth and sanctifying,
consequently they were obligated
(according to all opinions)
to mention Shabbat in the Grace After Meals.
And since the one who recites the blessing over the cup is akin to a "communal emissary"
(but not exactly, because it is not a prayer with a minyan),
even though he himself did not spread a cloth and sanctify,
and consequently he does not need to mention Shabbat in the Grace After Meals
(according to the ruling of the Alter Rebbe –
not in accordance with the opinion of the Taz),
nevertheless, there is a place that also he
(the one who recites the blessing over the cup)
should mention Shabbat,
since a part of the congregation
(for whom he is akin to a communal emissary)
are obligated
(according to all opinions)
to mention Shabbat. And especially since there is additionally the support of the opinion of the Taz and the matter of the blessing of Israel
(as above).
And from the combination of all these matters together –
it was then explained that there is a place to mention Shabbat in the Grace After Meals,
by adding "The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat etc.,"
because it is at the conclusion of the Grace After Meals –
after all the ten blessings of "The Merciful One"
[which correspond to the ten sefirot,
as explained in the well-known letter of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, in the name of what he heard from his father,
the Rebbe (the Rashab) of blessed memory] –
where one is not so particular about an interruption.
Even regarding "May we never lack,"
the conclusion of all the blessings of the Grace After Meals
(before the ten blessings of "The Merciful One") –
an interruption afterwards is not comparable to an interruption beforehand.
Therefore, some have the custom to answer "Amen" after "May we never lack,"
because it is a conclusion of the blessing –
although the custom of Chabad is not so. As is known the story of the Rebbe, my father-in-law, that they tried in the presence of his father all things,
and after all the explanations and discussions,
they did not prevail upon him to say "Amen" then. But the custom of the world is to say "Amen" then. From this it is understood that according to all opinions, after "May we never lack" the severity of interruption is not as great as before that point.
All the more so after all the ten blessings of "The Merciful One" –
certainly there is not such severity in interruption.
Therefore –
from the combination of all these matters together –
it was then said after the ten blessings of "The Merciful One" –
"The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat etc."
But yesterday –
since no one spread a cloth and sanctified,
the only support for mentioning Shabbat remains –
the opinion of the Taz,
and the Alter Rebbe does not rule in accordance with the opinion of the Taz –
therefore there is no place to mention Shabbat in the Grace After Meals,
even not by saying "The Merciful One."
Thus, according to the above, the aforementioned perplexing matters are answered.
And from this it is also understood regarding other perplexing matters –
that they certainly have an explanation.
And may it be His will that after all these words regarding this matter –
the request "The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the life of the worlds" should be fulfilled in actuality.
Although yesterday it was not said
(during the farbrengen meal),
but Jews
(in other places)
who already ate the Shabbat meal together with the Yom Tov meal and spread the tablecloth and made Kiddush –
they already said it;
האבן עס דאך יע געזאגט;
and also the Jews who were at the farbrengen yesterday –
after the farbrengen they said it afterwards in the Grace After Meals of the Shabbat meal,
and likewise it will be said at the conclusion of the farbrengen. Consequently, it is not so relevant to the fulfillment of the request in practice that it was not said yesterday –
because in practice it is said today
(and it was said yesterday in the Grace After Meals of the Shabbat meal),
and those whom the matter "bothers"
(in the vernacular) –
should have in mind in the Grace After Meals also for yesterday!
And may it be His will,
as mentioned,
that the request of all Jews be fulfilled in practice
(in the Grace After Meals of Shabbat):
"The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely Shabbat and rest for the eternal life," and
(as is said in the Grace After Meals of Yom Tov) –
"The Merciful One, may He grant us as an inheritance the day that is entirely good,"
And afterwards –
"The Merciful One, may He grant us the days of Mashiach and the life of the World to Come,
He who magnifies the salvations of His king and does kindness to His anointed one, to David and to his seed forever,"
so that "immediately they are redeemed."
Since we attend to the needs of the public on Shabbat,
and especially when one finds oneself in a farbrengen which is a continuation and conclusion of Simchat Torah.
At that time is the beginning and one takes then the strength to do the service of "and Yaakov went on his way" throughout the entire year
(as above section 1) –
here is the time and place to mention several essential matters:
First and foremost regarding the general concept of love of Israel and unity of Israel –
which is especially connected with Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
as is understood from the words of our Sages regarding Shemini Atzeret:
"This is an expression of endearment,
like children parting from their father and He said to them, 'Your parting is difficult for Me,
stay one more day.'" And as discussed many times the precision of the expression "your parting is difficult for Me" and not "our parting," Heaven forbid,
because this refers to the parting of Jews from one another after the conclusion of the festivals
(but between Jews and the Almighty there is, Heaven forbid, no separation),
and in order to nullify this "your parting is difficult for Me" there is the concept of Shemini Atzeret,
which unites all Jews and causes that the unity be drawn forth upon the entire year.
And the explanation of this:
When Jews would go up for the pilgrimage festival
(at the time when the Holy Temple was standing)
there was among them a special unity,
to the extent that it is expressed in halachah:
Yerushalayim is "a city that was joined together,
a city that makes all of Israel into friends" –
therefore Jews
(at the time of the pilgrimage festival)
are deemed trustworthy regarding purity, etc.
From this it is understood that even not at the time when the Holy Temple is standing and even outside the Land –
there is among Jews a special unity during the three pilgrimage festivals. As is also seen simply,
that when Yom Tov comes, Jews are in a state of closeness to one another more than during the rest of the days of the year.
And as the ruling of the Rambam,
that true joy –
the joy of Yom Tov –
is specifically when one includes others in the joy,
not only "he and his sons and his wife,"
but also "for the convert and the orphan and the widow, etc.,"
and the more people who participate in the joy –
the greater is the joy. And especially when one connects it with drinking –
"Great is drinking which brings close,"
all the more so the drinking of wine
(not only water and the like),
"which gladdens God and men."
But after the festivals,
when Jews go away from one another, each to his place,
"each man under his vine and under his fig tree" –
even at the time when the Holy Temple was standing,
in the Land of Israel,
and at the time when all its inhabitants were upon it,
when then Jews stand more in unity
[and then the Land of Israel is in its completeness,
because then there was a new reality of all Jews together in the Land of Israel],
there could be a matter of separation relative to the closeness and unity during the pilgrimage festival,
because it is each man under his fig tree,
his fig tree in the Land of Israel,
all the more so after the Holy Temple was destroyed,
in the time of exile,
and especially since the cause of this last exile is the opposite of love of Israel,
not only the opposite of baseless love but the opposite of love in general.
Therefore,
after the festivals of the month of Tishrei,
the Almighty says, "It is hard for Me to part from you,"
because of the separation that can occur among Jews when they go away from each other after the festivals. And in order to nullify this "parting from you,"
the Almighty says, "Stay yet one more day,"
Shemini Atzeret,
when all Jews find themselves together in unity with the Almighty –
"Israel and the King alone,"
from which it is understood that among Jews themselves there is no opposite of unity,
but rather they are like one entity,
because specifically then they can be in unity with the Almighty through that which "all of us as one" becomes "bless us, our Father, etc., with the light of Your countenance" also in such a manner
(that one becomes one entity with the Almighty).
And from this one takes strength that there should be unity of Israel throughout the entire year,
also when Jews find themselves
each one in his place.
Based on this, it is understood that the special campaign that pertains to Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah is the campaign of love of Israel and unity of Israel –
in order to nullify the "it is hard for Me to part from you" that can occur after the festivals,
whose conclusion is Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
Starting from that which Jews stand now in unity,
and one now takes upon oneself good resolutions in a manner that the resolutions should come down in actual deed in matters of love and unity of Israel,
because now
(on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah),
before the "parting from you" begins and each one goes to his place –
it is easier to ensure that afterwards there should not be "parting from you,"
but rather one should stand in love and unity.
And from this one comes to the other campaigns –
which also all have a connection with Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah:
The campaign of education –
educating oneself and educating others. Which in general means to educate oneself and others in matters of Torah,
from the term instruction,
which is especially connected with Simchat Torah,
whose essence is the joy of Torah.
Until from this one comes to Torah as a detail
(not as a general principle that is included in education) –
the commandment of Torah study –
the campaign of Torah.
And from Torah and the joy of Torah
(on Simchat Torah) –
one comes to commandments and the joy of a commandment:
The campaign of tefillin –
about which "the entire Torah is equated to tefillin."
The campaign of mezuzah –
which has a special segulah regarding protection,
as hinted in the name "Sha-dai,"
acronym for "Guardian of the doors of Israel"
("Guardian of the dwellings of Israel")
which the matter of protection was manifestly evident and especially on the festival,
at the time when Jews ascended for the pilgrimage.
As it is written, "And no man shall covet your land when you ascend to appear before the Lord your God three times a year,"
and as explained in the words of our Sages, may their memory be blessed, that this means that the Almighty guarded the houses and possessions of Jews at the time when they ascended for the pilgrimage:
"Lest Israel say, 'Behold we ascend to prostrate ourselves; who will guard our land for us?'
The Holy One, blessed be He, said to them, 'Ascend, and I will guard what is yours,'
as it is said, 'And no man shall covet your land when you ascend to appear.'
If in his eyes it is not coveted, how would he come to take his property and his livestock?"
And as related in the words of our Sages, may their memory be blessed, simply several stories of Rav regarding this,
and one of them:
That gentiles who were neighbors of Jews said to one another:
"When these Jews go up to Jerusalem,
we will take everything that they have
(now when these Jews go up to Jerusalem for the pilgrimage, we will take everything that they have from their house),
when they went up, the Holy One, blessed be He, provided them with angels entering and leaving in their likeness,
when they descended, they sent for them,
they said to them, 'Where were you?'
they said to them, 'In Jerusalem,'
they said to them, 'And whom did you leave in the house?'
(and to whom did you leave inside the house?),
they said, 'Not to anyone'
(to no person), they said
(immediately the gentiles recognized and said),
'Blessed is the God of the Jews, who does not abandon them and does not abandon what is theirs.'"
This means:
Even though gentiles were not commanded regarding "You shall not covet,"
and consequently, what difference does it ostensibly make whether "he will covet your land when you go up to appear" or not –
However, since if a gentile "covets" the land and possessions of Jews,
it is possible that at the time when the Jews go up for the pilgrimage festival, the gentile will want to take it –
as in the aforementioned incident of the Rabbi –
and no one will be able to stop them,
because all the Jews had gone up for the pilgrimage festival
("Every male of yours shall appear"),
as implied by the aforementioned incident of the Rabbi,
for from the perspective of the joy of the festival,
it is logical to say that they took the women,
and also their sons and daughters,
because it was a year of Hakhel
("Gather the people, the men, the women, and the little ones"),
or even without that, they took all the children –
therefore, the Almighty promised that even "No man shall covet your land when you go up to appear,"
"If it is not desirable in his eyes, how would he come to take his property and his animal?"
And even if he does covet it,
the Almighty guards it so that he should not touch it,
as in the aforementioned incident of the Rabbi.
And the matter of protection for Jews –
is also accomplished throughout the entire year
(not only on the festival)
through the Mezuzah,
which has the special quality of guarding the house of a Jew and all that is found in it –
"Guardian of the doors of Israel"
[And at the time of the pilgrimage festival, the protection "in your land" is emphasized].
The campaign of charity –
which has a special connection with Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
as it is stated in the Siddur that on Shemini Atzeret "they read as the first portion 'You shall surely tithe,'
and there is no difference whether it falls on Shabbat or on a weekday, because then is the time of tithes"
[And it is understood that this also has a connection with Simchat Torah, which comes immediately after Shemini Atzeret] –
including the poor man's tithe,
and the gifts to the priesthood and Levites, etc.,
and the entirety of the matter of charity
(as is discussed in detail in that reading).
And since Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are all-inclusive days,
from which influence is drawn for the entire year –
it is understood that the matter of charity, whose special time is on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah
(in all years),
is drawn from Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah and affects all the days of the year.
So too regarding the three matters that were specifically given to the women of Israel,
three pillars upon which the entire house of Israel rests –
lighting candles of the holy Shabbat and festivals,
the kashrut of eating and drinking, and family purity,
whose acronym is:
"The Chen"
("Chen" with the addition of the letter Hei)
and "Nah."
And the matter that each person should receive a letter in one of the general Torah scrolls.
And all this –
in addition to the matters of service that one must do each individual day,
"Each day does its work." Because first and foremost, one must mention the general matters,
as they are called –
general campaigns,
whose time is the entire year,
and they stand with special emphasis and special force on Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
as for example the matter of charity
("You shall surely tithe")
on Shemini Atzeret,
and Torah on Simchat Torah,
and so too the other matters,
and therefore one takes from Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah special powers and force,
and in a manner of internal absorption,
to do all these matters throughout the year;
צו טאן די אלע ענינים במשך כל השנה;
and afterwards one mentions the individual service of each and every day of the days of the year.
Here is also the place to mention the announcements that were made after the prayer regarding the "Torah gathering,"
which it is customary to hold following each festival,
all the more so following Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah,
whose essence is –
the joy of Torah.
So too regarding the other gatherings and assemblies,
assemblies of educators and the like,
about which announcements were made after the prayer,
at a time of favor, etc.
So too it is customary on Simchat Torah to announce regarding the "Keren HaShanah" –
giving a sum for charity corresponding to all the days of the year.
And particularly in this year
(as discussed above, total sum),
which has the greatest number of days –
385 days –
it shows that in this year a Jew was given the most powers and possibilities in his service,
and in our case
("Keren HaShanah") –
the sum that one gives for "Keren HaShanah" in this year is the greatest sum,
for 385 days. And through this, the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, is also drawn –
"Four measures shall be yours" –
not only corresponding to the sum for 353 days,
but corresponding to the sum for 385 days.
And in this, each one was given the choice –
whether he should give five hundred prutahs,
five hundred manim,
or five hundred dinars,
etc.,
"each person according to his gift, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you,"
and in accordance with this, the blessing of the Holy One, blessed be He, is drawn,
"the four hands shall be yours."
Thus it is also customary on Simchat Torah to mention a matter in Torah –
about learning the daily study sessions of Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya. And although it has already been mentioned about this many times,
one must also mention it at the time when one is at the conclusion of the farbrengen of Simchat Torah and at the beginning of the service of "and Jacob went on his way" throughout the entire year.
[Missing source text for s index 3]
It is also customary to participate in the "gathering of Torah" by speaking a matter in Torah,
and this time we will stop on two matters,
and the chooser will choose, etc.
And due to fatigue, etc. –
in brief, at least:
First of all,
the first matter,
regarding a leap year:
The matter of a leap year is to equalize the difference between the solar year and the lunar year,
as the Rambam writes: "And how much does the solar year exceed the lunar year?
Close to eleven days. Therefore, when from this addition there accumulates about thirty days or a little less or a little more,
they add one month,
and they make that year thirteen months,
and it is called a leap year." And at the end of the cycle
(nineteen years)
the lunar years equalize with the solar years until "there does not remain from the count of the solar days in all nineteen years except one hour and four hundred and eighty-five parts" according to "the epoch of Shmuel,"
but according to "the epoch of Rav Adda" –
"you will not find any addition in the cycle of nineteen years at all." And as is explained in several books, the matter of the intercalation,
and in detail –
in the laws of the sanctification of the new month of the Rambam.
And regarding this matter, it was noted in that letter that "the difficulty is from the language of the Rambam at the beginning of the laws of the sanctification of the new month:
'And the years that we calculate are the solar years.'"
What is the "difficulty"? First of all –
because it is indeed explained in the words of our sages, of blessed memory, the difference between Jews and the nations of the world,
that the nations of the world count by the sun and Israel counts by the moon,
so what is the intention in the language of the Rambam "and the years that we calculate are the solar years"?
The question is even stronger:
At first glance, there is no reality at all that Israel should count by the sun!
Even in a leap year, where it is emphasized that Jews reckon with the solar year and therefore they add an intercalary month
(in order to equalize the difference between the lunar years and the solar years) –
this is also not a solar year,
but rather a lunar year –
thirteen lunar months,
three hundred and eighty-three,
three hundred and eighty-four or three hundred and eighty-five days,
not three hundred and sixty-five days of a solar year. And on the contrary:
The entire reason why a leap year is made is specifically because Israel counts by the moon
(not by the sun),
and since a lunar year is
(approximately)
eleven days less than a solar year,
therefore one must add
(every few years)
an intercalary month in order to equalize the lunar year with the solar year,
but "equalizing" the lunar year with the solar year does not mean counting by the sun.
It turns out that Israel always calculates not a solar year,
three hundred and sixty-five days,
but rather lunar months:
in a regular year –
twelve lunar months
(three hundred and fifty-three,
three hundred and fifty-four or three hundred and fifty-five days),
and in a leap year –
thirteen lunar months
(three hundred and eighty-three,
three hundred and eighty-seven or three hundred and eighty-five days).
Therefore,
even if one would want to interpret the intention of the words of the Rambam "and the years that we calculate are the solar years" that Jews reckon, because of their festivals,
(the holiday of Passover –
in the time of spring, etc.)
not only with the lunar year but also with the solar year,
upon which the seasons of the year depend
(and one adds an intercalary month to equalize the lunar year with the solar year) –
however, according to the known principle of how precise the Rambam is in his language, it is plausible to say that "the years that we calculate are the solar years" does not mean only from the aspect that one equalizes the lunar year with the solar year,
because in practice, each individual year –
whether a regular year
(of three hundred and fifty-three, etc., days),
whether a leap year
(of three hundred and eighty-three, etc., days) –
is not a solar year
(three hundred and sixty-five days),
but rather a lunar year,
as above.
Rather, it appears from the language of the Rambam that he innovates that Israel indeed counts by the sun.
The question remains: where does one find among Jews a count connected to the solar year?
[This has no connection at all with the known phrase "The moon has no year at all,
just as the sun has no month at all",
so that one should say that therefore the Rambam writes "The years that we calculate are the years of the sun",
because "the moon has no year at all" –
for the explanation of this is different:
That the concept of "month" applies only to the moon,
since every month in its month a new circuit of the moon begins and the light of the moon
(in relation to the earth)
is renewed,
but not so with the sun, there is no new circuit and renewal every month. Therefore "the sun has no month at all";
משא"כ אין חמה איז ניטא קיין נייער סיבוב וחידוש בכל חודש. דערפאר איז "אין לשמש חודש כלל";
and on the other hand –
the concept of "year" applies specifically to the sun,
since every year a new circuit of the sun begins,
but not so the moon, its circuit is every month in its month,
and after twelve circuits in twelve months are completed,
a thirteenth and fourteenth circuit begins,
etc.,
not that after twelve
(or in a leap year – thirteen)
circuits of the moon a new matter begins,
a new year. Therefore "the moon has no year at all",
only the sun. From this it is understood that this has no connection with the language of the Rambam regarding the counting of years that Jews count –
"The years that we calculate are the years of the sun"].
One pointed out in this regard from the Chiddushei HaGriz HaLevi on the Rambam
(which is printed in Jerusalem)
where he apparently discusses this matter:
He elaborates there in explaining the dispute between Rashi and the Rambam regarding the reason for the intercalation of the year based on the season and on the spring and on the fruits of the tree –
that according to Rashi the reason for the matter of intercalation is for the sake of the festivals,
so that Passover should be in the time of spring
("Guard the month of spring"),
the Festival of Weeks –
in the time of the first fruits,
Sukkot –
in the time of the harvest
("When you gather from your threshing floor and from your winepress");
("באספך מגרנך ומיקבך" 153);
but not so according to the Rambam, the matter of intercalation
(primarily)
is "so that the years should be the years of the sun",
and the spring season and the fruits of the tree are a clarifying sign for this
(not a reason),
in the language of the Rambam –
"By three signs they intercalate the year, etc."
(and only later does he write "And these are the things that are the main reason for which they intercalate, so that the years should be the years of the sun").
That is, the cause and reason for intercalation is not
(only)
for the sake that the festivals should be in their season, but
(primarily)
"so that the years should be the years of the sun".
And the practical difference –
if one must intercalate the year only in order to make it equal to the solar year
(or for the other reasons that the Rambam writes),
even when the signs are not present
(that the festivals should occur in their season, etc.):
according to the Rambam one need not consider the three signs if one has the other reasons for intercalation –
to make the year equal to the solar year
(or the other reasons).
But not so according to Rashi, one intercalates the year only for the sake of the festivals.
This is the content of his words.
And based on this, one wished to explain the language of the Rambam "The years that we calculate are the years of the sun".
But this has no connection to our matter. Even if one says that intercalation is a law in the year in general
(not only a law in the festivals),
according to the opinion of the Rambam –
the explanation is not that Jews count by the sun
(as above),
rather one must add an intercalated month only in order to make the lunar year equal to the solar year;
נאר מ'דארף צוגעבן א חודש העיבור בלויז בכדי צו משווה זיין שנת הלבנה לשנת החמה;
but not so, from the language of the Rambam "The years that we calculate are the years of the sun" it implies that the Rambam innovates
(not only that intercalation is a law in the year, but)
that Jews count by the sun –
the question is where is it implied that Jews should count by the solar year
(365 days)?
The very fact that there is a solar year,
which has 365 days and that every person
(also Jews)
has 365 sinews corresponding to the 365 days –
has no connection to our matter,
for here we speak about the counting of years by the children of Israel
("The years that we calculate are the years of the sun"),
so even though there is a reality of the solar year which has 365 days and the human body has 365 sinews corresponding to the 365 days –
it does not explain the language of the Rambam that "The years that we calculate are the years of the sun",
because one does not apparently find that Jews count by the sun,
365 days.
And the answer to this –
where does one find in the Torah that Israel counts by the sun:
The Mishnah says:
"One who sells a house within a walled city may redeem it immediately and may redeem it for a full twelve months...
We count the year only from the time of the sale,
as it is said: 'until the completion of a year for him'
(for the one to whom it was his ancestral holding).
When it says 'complete,'
it includes the intercalated month
(so that if the year was intercalated, it is not forfeited until thirteen months)."
And according to Rabbi:
"He is granted a year and its intercalation,"
"whether in a simple year or in an intercalated year, he is granted a lunar year,
and the extra days of the solar year over the lunar year
(namely)
eleven days,
by which we intercalate the year."
We see a law in the Torah where "the years that we calculate are solar years":
The sale of a house in a walled city,
according to Rabbi,
we count "a year and its intercalation,"
354 days of the lunar year,
and another 11 extra days of the solar year over the lunar year,
and in total –
365 days,
the solar year
[and although in a solar year there are several hours more than 365 days –
we do not count hours].
But this is still not sufficient,
because the law of selling a house in a walled city is not a commandment
(there is no obligation to sell or redeem a house),
but rather a matter of expositions. We still need to find a matter of a commandment where Israel counts by the moon upon which "the years that we calculate are solar years" applies.
I caught myself that we find it
(in a matter of a commandment)
explicitly regarding the compounding of the incense of the Holy Temple –
as we say every single day:
"The Sages taught: The compounding of the incense, how is it done?
Three hundred and sixty-eight manehs were in it,
three hundred and sixty-five corresponding to the number of days of the solar year,
and three extra manehs etc." We see a matter of a commandment
(the incense of the Holy Temple) –
and every single year –
where "we calculate...
solar years" literally.
And it is so crucial that the incense should be "corresponding to the number of days of the solar year,"
that because of this we do not consider all the difficulties that arise as a result of this regarding "the remainder of the incense,"
as is known that this is not a simple law,
but in this there is a whole "commotion,"
that through the fact that they brought the incense "corresponding to the number of days of the solar year" they had to afterwards redeem the remnants and bring them down from sacred to secular,
as explained in the Mishnah and brought in the Rambam:
"The remainder of the incense" –
"that which remains every single year...
for there is no year that does not have a remainder,
for the incense was made of 368 manehs,
365 manehs corresponding to the 365 days of the solar year,
and 3 manehs from which 23 handfuls are brought in on Yom Kippur,
and not all of them would fit in his handfuls,
and furthermore, in every simple year there was a remainder,
for a simple year has 354 days,
consequently 11 extra manehs remain,
the difference between 354 and 365 days of the solar year. The Mishnah asks:
"The remainder of the incense, what was done with it?"
Since "that remainder was not fit for the coming year from Nisan onward,"
because then one must bring from the new terumah,
In other words:
The new terumah is brought at the beginning of the lunar year,
on Rosh Chodesh Nisan
(the New Year for the terumah of the shekels),
as it is said: "This is the burnt offering of each month in its month throughout the months of the year –
the Torah said: Renew and bring an offering from the new terumah etc.,"
and one of the reasons for this is explained,
because one cannot know when the beginning of the solar year is. One must study astronomy for this and be able to know when the constellation of Aries is in a specific place.
However, the beginning of the lunar year everyone knows because it depends on the months,
and when 12 months end, a new year begins. Consequently, we take the new terumah from the beginning of the lunar year and not from the beginning of the solar year. And since they prepare incense for 365 days
(corresponding to the number of days of the solar year),
it turns out that 11 extra manehs remain
(corresponding to the difference between 354 days of the lunar year and 365 days of the solar year),
one must find a solution for what to do with the "remainder."
And the Mishnah answers:
"They set aside from it the wages of the craftsmen,
and they redeem it upon the wages of the craftsmen,
and they give it to the craftsmen as their wages,
and they go back and purchase it from the new terumah."
And according to this, it turns out that every single year more and more "remainder" accumulated
(in the first year 11 manehs and the 3 extra manehs of Yom Kippur,
in the second year 2 times 11 manehs and 3 manehs etc.) –
concerning this, "once every sixty or seventy years they would compound it in halves."
And the only reason for all this trouble is so that the compounding of the incense should be "corresponding to the number of days of the solar year" –
there is no other explanation for this.
And not looking at all the troubles that came about through the fact that the compounding of the incense was "like the number of days of the solar year" –
that they had to therefore redeem the remnants,
and bring them down from sacred to profane,
to desecrate it for the wages of the craftsmen,
which itself is indeed a great matter,
and afterwards they had to buy it back from them,
and so it repeated itself every single year,
and already at the beginning of the year they knew that there would remain a "surplus" at the end of the year,
and they would have all these troubles –
nevertheless, they compounded the incense specifically according to the number of days of the solar year,
because of which it must be
(in the language of the Rambam)
"they calculate..
the solar years" literally.
Here we see a matter of a commandment where "the years that we calculate are the solar years",
and not once in three years and the like,
but every single year,
in a manner similar to the other matters that Israel counts by the moon
(only regarding the count of solar days this is connected with the incense in the Holy Temple).
And one could elaborate on all this,
but we must speak briefly.
There is another matter that we wish to discuss in connection with the fixing of this year –
that Yom Kippur occurs on Shabbat –
at least in the briefest of brief:
In the laws of Yom Kippur
(and likewise in the laws of Shabbat)
the Alter Rebbe writes:
"It is a positive commandment from the Torah to add from the profane onto the sacred,
both regarding affliction and regarding the prohibition of work,
as it is said, 'And you shall afflict your souls on the ninth of the month in the evening, from evening until evening you shall rest on your rest day,'
one might think he should fast on the ninth of the month,
the verse states 'in the evening,'
if 'in the evening,' one might think after dark,
the verse states 'on the ninth,'
how so?
He begins and fasts while it is still day,
from here that we add from the profane onto the sacred." And he continues:
"I have only Yom Kippur,
from where [do we derive] Shabbat?
The verse states 'you shall rest on your rest day,'
from where [do we derive] a Festival?
The verse states 'your rest days,'
every rest day that you rest you add to it both from before it and from after it."
And afterwards he elaborates on the time of the addition,
that it is before twilight,
but there is no fixed measure for this,
rather it depends on the will of the person:
"And this addition has no measure..
if he wishes to make the entire period an addition
(from the beginning of sunset until twilight)
he may do so,
if he wishes to make part of it an addition he may do so,
provided that he adds some definite time from the profane onto the sacred",
"And if he wishes to be early and accept upon himself the addition of Shabbat from the time of plag hamincha etc., he has the authority etc.",
see there.
And it is also known the discussion and differences of opinion among the early and later authorities whether only the addition of Yom Kippur is from the Torah,
or also the addition of Shabbat and Festivals
(which is derived from Yom Kippur)
is from the Torah.
And based on this, one may investigate whether the law of adding from the profane onto the sacred is a specific law for each rest day individually:
the addition of Yom Kippur is a law and definition within Yom Kippur,
the addition of Shabbat is a law and definition within Shabbat,
the addition of a Festival is a law and definition within a Festival;
תוספת יו"ט איז א דין וגדר אין יו"ט;
or it is a general law that "every rest day that you rest you add to it from before it and from after it."
That is, that all additions have one general law and definition –
an addition from the profane onto the sacred.
And the difference expresses itself when Yom Kippur occurs on Shabbat
(as in this year) –
whether one can distinguish between the addition of Yom Kippur and the addition of Shabbat,
that is, that from the perspective of the addition of Yom Kippur he should add a specific number of moments;
ד.ה. אז מצד תוספת יוהכ"פ זאל ער מוסיף זיין א מספר מסויים של רגעים;
and from the perspective of the addition of Shabbat he should add fewer moments,
or one cannot distinguish between them,
that is, at the time he accepts upon himself the addition of Yom Kippur,
the addition of Shabbat also applies to him. And the practical difference is regarding things that are permitted on Yom Kippur and forbidden on Shabbat –
if one says that the addition of Shabbat can be a shorter time than the addition of Yom Kippur,
one may do those things
(which are forbidden on Shabbat but permitted on Yom Kippur)
in the time between the acceptance of the addition of Shabbat and the addition of Yom Kippur.
And likewise regarding a Festival that occurs on Shabbat –
whether one can distinguish between the addition of Shabbat and the addition of the Festival,
that he adds a specific time for the addition of the Festival,
and a shorter time for the addition of Shabbat.
And the practical difference
(as above) –
regarding matters that are permitted on a Festival and forbidden on Shabbat,
whether one may do them in the time between the addition of the Festival and the addition of Shabbat.
One can say one line of reasoning,
that additions from the profane onto the sacred are a specific law for each rest day individually,
and from the perspective of the addition of Shabbat he should add less time from the profane onto the sacred than from the perspective of the addition of Yom Kippur –
because since the time of the addition "has no measure" and it depends on the will of the person –
what prevents him from adding one time as the addition of Yom Kippur and another time for the addition of Shabbat.
On the other hand, there is a reverse rationale:
That the Torah commanded one commandment in the Torah
(in one verse)
that one should add on each rest day from the profane onto the sacred
(and the addition of Shabbat and Yom Tov is derived from the same commandment that is stated regarding Yom HaKippurim) –
consequently, the addition is a law in the addition, not in the specific rest day
(Yom HaKippurim,
Shabbat or Yom Tov).
And especially according to the rationales
(mentioned above)
that if the addition of Shabbat and Yom Tov is from the Torah just like Yom HaKippurim,
it makes all these additions even more alike. Therefore, a person can indeed accept upon himself an addition from the profane onto the sacred for as much time as he wants
(it has no measure),
but after he has accepted upon himself a specific time for the addition of Yom HaKippurim, the addition of Shabbat also automatically applies to him during this time.
But even according to the rationale that the addition of Shabbat and Yom Tov is only Rabbinic,
not like the addition of Yom HaKippurim which is from the Torah –
there is no necessity from this that each addition has its own law and definition,
because "whatever the Sages instituted, they instituted in the manner of Torah law",
consequently, even a Rabbinic addition has the same definitions as a Torah addition.
And regarding this is the inquiry in several matters in the Torah. And several examples of the matter:
(a) Regarding the prohibition of "before a blind person do not place a stumbling block":
Is it a general prohibition,
a prohibition in itself regarding all transgressions –
that one may not cause his fellow to stumble in any prohibition whatsoever
(and it is not dependent on the severity of the specific transgression);
(און ס'איז ניט תלוי אין דער חומרא פון דער עבירה פרטית);
or the prohibition of "before a blind person" is not a prohibition in itself,
but rather a detail
(a specific law)
in each specific transgression,
and it is dependent on the severity of the specific prohibition:
If one causes another to stumble
(may it not happen)
(ר"ל)
in the prohibition of Shabbat –
it is a part and detail of the prohibition of Shabbat,
in the prohibition of Yom Tov –
a part and detail of the prohibition of Yom Tov,
in the prohibition of Yom HaKippurim –
a part and detail of the prohibition of Yom HaKippurim,
and so forth.
(b) Regarding "half a measure"
(as has also been discussed previously):
Is the prohibition a matter unto itself
(with its own definitions),
so that whatever matter the half measure may be, the prohibition is in that –
half a measure;
חצי שיעור;
or is it a specific matter in each specific matter,
so that the half measure in each prohibition is included in that specific prohibition,
according to that specific matter.
And regarding this in several matters similar to them.
And one should elaborate on this,
and the matter is brief.
And may it be His will that from this discussion and deliberation in these matters in the Torah,
one should come to clarification and matters in the manner of arriving at the halachic conclusion according to the law,
until the ultimate perfection in this –
for eternal life.
Because the totality of our deeds and our service in the time of exile,
including and especially in the study of Torah –
is a close introduction and preparation for the study of the Torah of Moshiach from the mouth of Moshiach,
and furthermore –
"a new Torah will go forth from Me",
which the Almighty Himself will teach –
consequently, there will then be a clarification in all the matters.
And simply –
that immediately and at once, and better one moment before, may Moshiach our righteousness come. And this is relevant to the clarification of halachah in practice immediately and at once –
because in the moment after the arrival of Moshiach there will be the study of the Torah of Moshiach from the mouth of Moshiach,
and "a new Torah will go forth from Me",
all the halachos will be clarified. And furthermore – together with the arrival of Moshiach, Elijah the prophet will also come and will resolve all the questions and difficulties,
"Tishbi will resolve difficulties and questions",
including –
the aforementioned inquiry.
And the main point –
that with the arrival of Moshiach our righteousness,
"now",
all Jews are freed from exile,
and not only in the manner of "better one moment before",
but incomparably more than "better" –
because it is the most necessary thing that it should be as quickly as possible,
because when Jews find themselves in exile even for one more moment,
it is not merely another moment in exile for the Jews,
but for all Jews of all generations,
together with the exile of Moshiach our righteousness –
"and he was wounded for our transgressions etc.",
together with the exile of the Shechinah,
"the Shechinah in exile" –
it is therefore simply understandable how much it matters that the exile should not be extended even one more moment,
and not only a "moment as an utterance",
the time it takes to say the three letters "rega"
(reish, gimmel, ayin),
(ר' ג' ע'),
but even the time it takes to say one letter!
And in the language of the prayer:
"for Your salvation we hope all day",
"and may our eyes see Your return to Zion with mercy" –
simply,
with physical eyes,
souls in bodies,
in bodies,
below ten handbreadths,
That is, in the manner of "Achishenah,"
"Behold, with the clouds of heaven" –
Jews come to our holy land,
"A land which the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year,"
And in the manner of "With our young ones and with our elders, with our sons and with our daughters,"
"A great congregation shall return here" –
the completeness of the people,
"And there we will make before You etc. as the commandments of Your will" –
the completeness of the Torah and His commandments,
together with the completeness of the land,
And in the manner of "The Lord your God will enlarge your border,"
speedily in our days, literally.
